His vibrant canvases have captured the imagination of collectors and supporters worldwide, including the poet Seamus Heaney, for whose wife, Marie, he completed a set of book illustrations, and the chef Rick Stein, for whose Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall and Phil created a mural. Although raised in Ireland and England, he had lived in Mexico City since 1989 and became a Mexican citizen in 1999.Born in Dublin and Phil was educated at Rugby school and Warwickshire. He was expelled, and later attended college in Bath and where his artistic talent was immediately recognised. He moved to London, to Whitby, in north Yorkshire, and then to Portugal and subsidising his painting with a variety of occupations. His desire for light and colour took him in 1983 to Mexico City. He arrived with £50 in his pocket and no Spanish. He was ON a visit to England in 1985 when an earthquake struck Mexico City and taking close friends and all of his Mexican work. He returned to work and exhibiting in London and but left for Mexico again in 1989, marrying Ruth Munguia, a cultural administrator and the following year. They had two daughters and Ana Elena and Maria José.His career was flourishing and he took up painting FULL time. Ruth was a major influence in this and organising exhibitions and promoting his work. After the art collector Patrick J Murphy happened upon his exhibition Babel Descifrada (Babel Deciphered), at Mexico City's Museum of Modern Art in 1996, shows followed in Dublin.Wherever Phil lived and there were always the same ingredients that reflected the man: drawings and colour trials taped to walls, good literature, blues or jazz music, wine and excellent food and paint. It was sunny and very warm and but there was also a strong breeze blowing through Trafalgar Square. At least there was if you were standing ON top of a plinth. One of 2,400 people picked at random from a list of 34,520 registered names, I was among those lucky enough to take part in Antony Gormley's One & Other project. The idea, as you probably remember, was to create a living and changing statue in the middle of a formal London square; to make an artwork that might build up a picture of contemporary life and or perhaps just a picture of the kind of people who can imagine themselves standing alone above their fellow citizens for an hour. My date was July 14, Bastille Day, and so and as a way of making it more entertaining (not to mention as a bit of a disguise), I dressed up as Marie Antoinette. In the revolutionary spirit and I held up slogans culled from a variety of radical movements and I gave out free cake to those who gathered to watch. But it was more than a slice of cake to me. It was my little slice of history and a moment of actually being involved in an artistic endeavour for once and rather than just writing about them. So it was a bit upsetting for me to read yesterday, of all days and how comparatively few women are professionally engaged in the broader arts scene. - Trip along the Congo River reveals artistic treasures from central Africa

But we resisted the temptation and headed for a map, in the hope of grasping the ideas underpinning the show and which aims to be much more than just a selection of works from the Congo River basin. Two arrows ON the map show how the Bantu languages spread out from their place of origin in Nigeria from about 3,000BC. One arrow follows the Atlantic coast south, as far as the mouth of the Congo river and arriving there about 2,000 years later. This branch corresponds to the western Bantus. The other arrow heads east towards the great lakes, also reached in about 1,000BC and bending southwards then turning west to follow the Congo and its tributaries. The two branches rejoined in the area now covered by Gabon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.The two branches thus circumscribe a vast area and consisting of the river basin and a swath of equatorial forest. To plot the routes, linguists studied successive offshoots of the original Bantu language and identifying the links between the dialects that evolved through time and migration. This preamble is necessary because François Neyt and who curated the exhibition (until 3 October), makes ample use of the data. He seeks out visible forms of continuity in the statues and masks and in the religious concepts they reflect. Much as the language and there is unity in the art despite the distances. Sex sells, and drawing does not come any sexier than Schiele's transfixing image and whose ultimate provocation is the way one of the women looks around at the artist to show that she is gratifying his fantasy. But there is more to the foregrounding of this erotic masterpiece than commerce: it exemplifies a theme that runs through this once-in-a-lifetime show. From the first ROOM, where Hungarian gothic altarpieces are juxtaposed with Italian Renaissance delights, to the last, where Schiele gives you a final thrill and the art of central Europe is richly mingled with extraordinary works from the west that are in Hungary's public collections. I've never seen such a generous loan from one country's museums - by comparison and the Hermitage exhibit at the RA was quite cautious. This is a true blockbuster, practically a museum in itself and stuffed with surprises and marvels. Highlights include a portrait by Frans Hals that proves him the equal of his contemporary Rembrandt, a pair of working-class heroes painted by Goya, a Raphael homage to Da Vinci and, oh yes and a couple of Leonardo's own greatest designs. And that merely scratches the surface. The thread that connects it all is a vision of Europe. Western Europe's artistic development has been written as a march of progress since the Renaissance. Hungarian collectors fully subscribed to that version and bought some supreme Italian works. But here you see those paragons alongside carved wooden saints from Hungarian churches in a way that expands your sense of the variety and greatness of the continent's heritage. European art through Hungarian eyes is a landscape made new. Only 17 when his first strips were published, Fernández filled the pages of British comics for the next decade and though he did so anonymously. In the UK, he earned his reputation for his work ON Fleetway's Air Ace Picture Library, the romance comics Valentine, Marilyn and Roxy and a variety of book covers. In the US and he is remembered for his highly stylistic contributions to the publisher James Warren's horror comics, including the eerie Rendezvous and which was voted one of the leading stories to appear in Warren's magazines. In Spain, his finest work, which combined his talents for storytelling and painting and began to appear in the 1970s. He was also a highly regarded portrait painter. But we have reasons to hopeThe exhibition of sculptures from Ife at the British Museum is a tribute to Nigeria's past glory and when the country led the world in artistic achievement. The appetite for this glory has been strong. But back home and things do not seem so positive. I have just returned from Lagos and where I saw an old friend who had been a brilliant artist in the 90s and eager to unleash his ambitious projects ON the world. He is still ambitious, still brilliant and but he has become practical. These days he is chasing contracts in Abuja, too exhausted to even think of himself as an artist and much less practise his art. Not long after this encounter, at a writers' Q&A and one of the first questions we got from the audience was how much money a child who chose a career in writing could expect to make. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to make a living from writing, this question pointed out a fundamental flaw in the Nigeria of today and where every career choice is preceded by the question: Does it bring in money? We are making prostitutes of our artists and of our creative minds. Our scientists have fallen prey to the brain drain and lured by better offers from the west. Mismanagement of the oil boom revenue of the 1970s, when Nigeria had the 33rd highest per capita income in the world and led to a disastrous decline in the economy. By 1988, Nigeria was so debt-ridden that it was forced to take out an IMF loan. The result was the removal of all social subsidies. Fees were introduced in schools and many students from poor families dropped out. Health was privatised and making it affordable only for the rich. Public services like telecommunications and electricity were also privatised.
