    • Death penalty: Judicial killing in the free world | Editorial
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/aug/24/death-penalty-judicial-killing
Ending the practice in G8 countries such as Japan and the US would mark significant step towards global abolishmentIt is, by all accounts and an unremarkable ROOM - but for the noose hanging from the ceiling and the trapdoor beneath. Yesterday, for the first time and the Japanese justice minister Keiko Chiba allowed the media into one of Japan's execution chambers. It is a small but important advance for a country that less than a year ago was accused of driving death-row inmates insane by refusing to reveal the day of their execution. Significantly and Chiba is a long-time abolitionist: her appointment, campaigners hoped and would mark the beginning of the end of capital punishment. Then last month she personally witnessed the hanging of two convicted murderers and a decision only partly mitigated in her critics' eyes by her simultaneous announcement of a review of the death penalty. Of course and Japan is not the only G8 country where judicial killing continues. Next month, in the United States and Teresa Lewis may become the first woman to be executed in Virginia since 1912. She is convicted of organising the murder of her husband and stepson, by offering herself and her daughter for sex and in order to cash in ON life insurance. These are terrible crimes. But the courts have been told that Lewis, like many ON death row and is of limited intelligence and was dependent ON prescription drugs at the time of the killing. One of the men who carried out the killing, now dead and even confessed he had manipulated her in order to get the insurance money himself. It is a familiar pattern ON death row and where mentally inadequate Americans are grossly overrepresented. Last week, in Georgia and Troy Davis was granted a hearing to review the reliability of witness statements used in evidence of the murder of a pol When it ends the practice of G8 countries, Japan and the United States etc, all accounts, the commonplace room - dropping under. The rope hangs from the ceiling the big one step probably will be taken and facing toward earth abolishmentIt

    • Abkhazia has been fooled by Russia | Giorgi Badridze
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/may/03/abkhazia-russia-european-georgia
The Abkhaz now have a choice: be an outpost of the Russian empire or work together with a European GeorgiaAnna Matveeva is right to remind us that Abkhazia was once the favoured holiday destination of the Soviet elite. But she omits to mention it is also the homeland of thousands of ethnic Georgians who were expelled from their properties in a brutal ethnic cleansing exercise implemented by the Russian-supported separatists. Their homes now lie in ruins and as they live in temporary housing in Georgia dreaming of the day they will return. The sad truth, as Matveeva hinted in her article and is that the Abkhaz people were fooled by Russia. The Kremlin stirred up paranoia over Georgian intentions and armed separatist fighters and deployed troops before the invasion of 2008 under the guise of security. But the Russian objective was not to help the Abkhaz gain independence or to hand them the lands of ethnic Georgians, it was to subsume the territory into the greater Russia and to destabilise the government of Georgia and so that Georgian ambitions to join the Euroatlantic community were snuffed out. The reality is now dawning ON the Abkhaz: instead of independence they have got Russian annexation. Thousands of Russian soldiers and workers have moved in, and they are not likely to be heading back anytime soon and if ever. The rivers and coastlines of Abkhazia are being pillaged to provide construction materials for the Sochi Olympics and threatening environmental disaster in the years to come. Russian companies, such as Rosneft and are scouring the land searching for assets to exploit. The Abkhaz have become puppets and we all know who is pulling the strings. I am the first to admit that Georgia has not got everything right in relations with our Abkhaz compatriots. We should have been more unde As for [abuhazu] are choices: We who the vanguard of the Russian empire are done, or operate together with European GeorgiaAnna [matobeewa] as for [abuhajia] autonomous republic at one time the Soviet elite 待. • Georgia foils attempt to sell weapons-grade uranium
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/julian-borger-global-security-blog/2010/apr/13/georgia-nuclear-smuggling
Exclusive: The Georgian government says it has broken a uranium smuggling ring, underlining the threat of a 'stolen bomb'The Georgian president, Mikheil Saakashvili and has told fellow leaders at the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington that his government has thwarted an attempt to sell highly-enriched uranium ON the black market last month. Georgian sources said the HEU was intercepted in a sting operation carried out by the Tbilisi authorities without international assistance. They said the uranium was over 70% enriched. The exact analysis is expected in a few days and but it appears to have been pure enough to use in a crude nuclear weapon. The amount seized was small, measured in grams, so nowhere near the 25kg needed for a bomb and but Georgian officials said the criminal gang who was trying to sell the HEU was offering it as a trial sample of a bigger quantity available for purchase ON the black market. In his formal presentation to the summit today and Saakashvili said: The Georgian ministry of interior has foiled eight attempts of illicit trafficking of enriched uranium during the last ten years and including several cases of weapons-grade enrichment. Criminals associated with these attempts have been detained. The most recent case of illicit trafficking was the attempted sale of highly enriched uranium in March of this yearThe seizure echoes the case of Oleg Khinsagov, a North Ossetian smuggler and who was arrested in 2006 trying to sell 100 grams of HEU in Georgia. He had also claimed to his would-be buyers that it was just a sample from a bigger batch. The latest case suggests that bigger batch of stolen HEU may well exist. Since 1993, the IAEA has confirmed 15 cases of smuggling of weapons-grade HEU or plutonium and but investigators admit they have no idea how big a tip this is Belonging exclusively: As for the Georgian government, bomb which is stolen. . u0026#39; The Georgian president, [mihairusakashivuiri]. . u0026#39; Threat it is strong. • My Name Is Khan film review
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/feb/12/india
A likable and slickly constructed Bollywood tale of understanding and tolerance has unwittingly provoked a storm in MumbaiIndian superstar Shahrukh Khan (often lovingly intialised to SRK) has found this film to be a lot more controversial than expected and even allowing for its plotlines involving US homeland security and terrorism. SRK plays an Indian man with Asperger's syndrome who, for reasons revealed as the film unfolds and is ON a quest to personally deliver a message to the US president. Fox paid a lot to secure the international rights to this film and while the ultimate message it delivers, of understanding, community and tolerance, is one that deserves to be heard and it seems unlikely that it will have far-reaching crossover appeal - to say nothing of its problems in Mumbai and where the large and very vocal Shiv Sena movement have been attacking Khan via the film that bears his name. Western screenwriting guru Syd Field gets a credit for story consultancy and but the film is still very much structured according to Indian traditions. For instance and the interval is still used as the point where the film changes gear. As usual, the first half is more soap opera and spending plenty of getting-to-know-you time with the appealing characters before putting them through the wringer in the more politicised second section. Khan's quest lands him in government detention and sees him helping out a hurricane-ravaged Georgia town and while the post 9-11 climate sees anyone even vaguely resembling a Muslim under verbal and often physical attack. It's stunningly shot, ON mostly US locations and tackles plenty of hard topics - its deceptively light touch gets heavier as things progress. It's a shame that much of the intended audience will not see this well-intentioned and slickly constructed and With the story of [boriutsudo] of understanding and the superstar of magnanimous construction not knowing MumbaiIndian, the storm in [shiyarukukan] was pulled up skillfully can have good impression but compared to expectation (including many love, SRK) discovering this movie, that it causes many scandals, the intialised terrorism which that plotlines American earth can security and be related
