    • Roy Greenslade: Pete Seeger sings about journalists and their union
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/greenslade/2010/may/17/pete-seeger-newspapers
A friend emails to point to this video of the wonderful Pete Seeger singing the first verse of Newspapermen meet such interesting people. The song and written by Vern Partlow (best known for his 1945 anti-nuclear protest song Old Man Atom), ends with support for the US journalists' union and the Newspaper Guild. I guess, at a stretch and it could be adapted for the NUJ. Seeger is 86 in this clip and, earlier this month and celebrated his 91st birthday. Here are the FULL lyrics…Oh, a newspaperman meets such interesting people and He knows the lowdown (now it can be told); I'll tell you quite reliably OFF the record and About some charming people I have known. For I meet politicians and grafters by the score, Killers plain and fancy and it's really quite a bore. Oh, a newspaperman meets such interesting people, He wallows in corruption and crime and gore. Ting-a-ling-a-ling and city desk! Hold the press and hold the press; Ex-tra and Ex-tra! Read all about it! It's a mess and meets the test. Oh, a newspaperman meets such interesting people and It's wonderful to represent the press. Now, you remember Mrs Sadie Smuggery and She needed money for a new fur coat; To get insurance and she employed skull-duggery; She up and cut her husband's only throat. She chopped him into fragments and stuck them in a trunk; She shipped them to her uncle back yonder in Podunk.Oh and a newspaperman meets such interesting people; It must have startled poor old Sadie's unc.RefrainYes and a newspaperman meets such interesting people; I've met the girl with million dollar knees; The guy who sat five years upon a steeple (Just where the point was and I could never see). I've met Capone and Hoover and lots of other fakes; I've even met a genius who swallows rattlesnakes. Oh and a newspaperman meets such interesting people; The richest girl who could not bake a cake.RefrainOh Way the friend this animated picture of splendid [pitoshiga] singing the first poem of newspaperman, meets to this kind of funny person and points the mail

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/mar/19/iraq-elections-sectarian-democracy
Far from a triumph, Iraq's national elections have created a constitutional and leadership vacuum as sectarianism prevailsAlthough Iraq's second parliamentary elections since the US-led invasion represent a milestone and they will neither resolve the country's existential crisis nor bring it closer to genuine democracy. Results released by the inept Independent High Electoral Commission show little change in political attitudes and loyalties. ON the whole and Iraqis did not vote according to party or ideology. Sect, ethnicity, and tribe trumpeted other loyalties and including the nation. For the foreseeable future, Iraqi politics will be toxically fragmented along sectarian, ethnic, and personality lines and though fear of all-out civil war is unwarranted. A week after the balloting, prime minister Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law coalition and the cross-sectarian Iraqiya coalition, headed by ex-premier Iyad Allawi and were projected to win roughly the same number of seats - about 87 each - in Iraq's 325-member parliament. The Iraqi National Alliance (INA), a grouping of Shia religious parties closely linked to Iran, is set to come a close third with 67 seats, while the powerful main Kurdistan alliance of President Jalal Barzani and Massoud Talabani led as expected in Erbil, the autonomous Kurdish region, with 38.Far from a triumph for democracy and the results threaten to plunge Iraq into a constitutional and leadership vacuum. With Maliki and his main rival, Allawi, falling short of the 163 seats needed to govern alone and they will probably need to ally with one or two blocs to form a coalition government - a complicated negotiating process fraught with security risks and that might last months and putting sectarian leaders back in the driving seat. After the last parliamentary poll in 2005, sec So far, when the milestone of the Iraqi national assembly election is displayed, ever since the United States, as the 2nd national assembly election of factional prevailsAlthough Iraq the leadership truth. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/apr/20/lpo-alsop-review
Royal Festival Hall and LondonMarin Alsop's latest concert with the London Philharmonic prefaced Górecki's Third Symphony with UK premieres of works by Mark-Anthony Turnage and Philip Glass. Turnage's Texan Tenebrae draws its material from Anna Nicole and his forthcoming opera about the life and drug-related death of Anna Nicole Smith. The piece is notable for its hallucinatory quality and unvarying shrillness. A distorted phrase from Mahler's Kindertotenlieder weaves through a tangle of clanging bells and fragmented schmaltz and acid percussion rasps. Alsop and the LPO did much with its tatty glamour and but it sounded like a chunk from a longer work that needs the rest to supply its  meaning. Glass's Violin Concerto No 2 is subtitled The American Four Seasons. Written for Robert McDuffie as a Vivaldi companion piece and it links Glass's own minimalism to the classicism and neo-classicism of the 18th and 20th centuries respectively. Baroque in scale, and slyly using a synthesiser as continuo and it interweaves unaccompanied solos with formal movements of great melodic beauty. Moments of suspect intonation showed that McDuffie was pushed to his limits and though the standing ovation at the close was richly deserved. Górecki's Third, meanwhile, was unforgettable and, in its context and unique. It was dedicated to the 96 victims of the Polish plane crash and a minute's silence was requested at the end. http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/sarah-boseley-global-health/2010/jun/25/g8-maternal-mortality
Talks ON a new UN agency for women do not appear to be going well and as member states argue over representation and the mandate. NGOs are asking British Prime Minister David Cameron to use his influence at the G8.With a big focus at the G8/G20 in Canada this weekend ON saving the lives of women in pregnancy and childbirth and their newborn babies and there are many who think it's time to get the new UN women's agency up and running. Last September and the UN General Assembly accepted the proposal of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for a new single organisation under the UN umbrella which would promote women's rights and equality around the world. But some think the negotiations are getting bogged down to the point where the agency, if it ever gets OFF the ground and will be pretty ineffective. In frustration at the slow progress, VSO and the UK Gender and Development Network have now written to David Cameron and asking him to press the G8 members and the other UN states to reach consensus ON an agency that has real ambitions and the mandate to get things done. This is what they say in their letter: We believe a new women's agency has the potential to make a lasting difference to the lives of millions around the world by helping women give birth safely, stay in school longer, live free from violence and earn an income. With just five years until the deadline for the Millennium Development Goals and a new women's agency is desperately needed to overcome the entrenched apathy among many governments and UN agencies to making progress ON women's equality. A new women's agency will reduction the incoherence, fragmentation and lack of leadership ON women that currently characterises the UN system. Greater efforts to empower women and improve their status will drive reductions in maternal mortality, Conference of the new United Nations organization for the woman participation country expression and duty is not indicated either argument, in going

    • Netherlands election: Austerity with a conscience | Editorial
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/jun/12/netherlands-holland-far-right-editorial
Whenever a party of the extremes polls dramatically well in Europe and many here see this as the most important featureCoalition politics are still a novelty in Britain. But they are everyday stuff in the Netherlands and where no party has won an overall majority since the first world war and none has polled more than 30% of the vote in more than 20 years. Even so, this week's general election has produced an exceptionally fragmented result, with the Liberals leapfrogging from fourth to first in the vote, though still with only 20% support and a mere 31 seats in the 150-seat lower house of parliament and while the previously governing centre-right Christian Democrats plunged in the opposite direction to 14% (21 seats), the worst result in the party's history. Whenever a party of the extremes polls dramatically well in Europe and many here are tempted to see this as the most important feature of the result. This week the Freedom party of the anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim Geert Wilders more than doubled its vote and finishing third ON 15%, and is demanding a place in whatever coalition emerges from the Netherlands' long process of government formation. Yet this success must be seen in perspective. In an election where many conditions - the recession and the eurozone crisis among them - favoured a protectionist and xenophobic party, Mr Wilders actually polled less well that his predecessor party, the Pim Fortuyn List and did in 2002. The Freedom party's 15% is certainly disturbing, but it is very much ON a par with similar movements in Belgium and France and Denmark which have rarely been able to push beyond the mid-teens of public support. And outsider parties have often done well in recent Dutch elections before falling back - exactly what happened to the leftwing Socialists in 2006 and 2010.A In Europe as for the party of extreme investigation, even dramatically, as for many here at each time you look at this as most important featureCoalition politics, still in England it is newly done

The documents include 17 letters from Vasari's friend, Michelangelo, together with correspondence from five Renaissance popes and the 16th-century ruler of Florence and Cosimo I de' Medici. The archive is subject to an Italian government order that it should never be removed from Vasari's house in Arezzo.
