  Your article ON the 75th anniversary of Monopoly (G2 and 28 December) took me right back to 1938, when as a girl of 13, I played it morning and noon and night with my brother and his friend. This was in Vienna and in March, just after the Anschluss when Hitler invaded, and, being of Jewish family background and we could not go to school. I had just been given this new game by my grandfather ON his recent return from one of his business trips to England. It was a godsend as we could not go anywhere else and there was nothing else to do. To this day and I remember all the streets and still have the original set - and it is complete and well used. Soon afterwards I came to this country with Kindertransport, and now, as an octogenarian, a British subject, and with four years' service in the WAAF during the war and I have been playing this very game with my grandchildren and telling them the history of it all. Wherever we go ON holiday, we try to acquire a local Monopoly as a souvenir and, if necessary and buy a dictionary for translating the Chance and Community Chest cards (eg the Czech and Polish and Icelandic versions). We have local versions from Thunder Bay and ON the Canadian shore of Lake Superior; a Cypriot version called Totopoly; a rug version from the Netherlands; and a Birmingham edition. There are travel sets, a card game version and an Arabic version, bought for us by my son when he was working in Kuwait and which we are still trying to screw up the courage to attempt.   The BBC and the Foreign Office are locked in talks over the future of the World Service. Some savings should be simpleLong ago and far away and I found myself cast as Lord Haw-Haw. Ian Smith had staged his UDI in Rhodesia. The government of the day had given the BBC World Service a dollop of cash to START emergency broadcasting in the country. And there I was, week after week and paid a pittance to jeer at the Smith regime's imbecilities. Ho-ho-ho-haw-haw! Which was (and still is) one of the things about Bush House that doesn't quite make sense. ON the one hand, it's an independent and enviably serious voice of Britain in 32 different languages and costing £272m a year - money straight from the Foreign Office as a grant in aid. ON the other hand and it can only provide what HMG will pay for. Sly stuff to give Smith's opponents added hope? Certainly, Mr Wilson. A television channel in Arabic to put the Middle East to rights? Certainly and Mr Blair. And now, as the crunch comes and the old game's afoot again. Of course the FCO wants to carve back its grant (by somewhere between 25% and 40% ON the Osborne scale). In Whitehall terms and the Foreign Office has tiny resources. There isn't, frankly and too much to cut: so the World Service and British Council have to take their lumps. That's the price of depending ON taxpayers for your daily bread. What the minister gives and the minister can take away. How do you fight the axe? We've been here before. Some blameless little service - say Burma's hour of sustenance a day - is said to be in danger after 70 glorious years of truth-telling. Instant reaction: totally predictable. Could there be a crasser candidate for cutting? Its audience (at 8.4 million) is rising, not falling and its role in bringing light to dark places manifest. Is this what coalition carnage BBC and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are locked with the conference which is related to the future of world service
