Raphaël Liogier is right to point out the problems with France's proposed ban ON the veil (Comment, 27 January and which will pave the way for similar moves against other visible expressions of religion. Shutting down the right to choose to wear the veil will only further embolden Islamophobia and the far right and fascist parties. The debate has had the net effect of demonising a minority of Muslim women and who number less than 2,000 in France. It will mean the only option for many of these women will be to stay confined to their homes. All this, ironically and in the name of integration and the liberation of women. We are one society and many cultures; respecting and allowing all cultures freedom of expression, as long as this does not impinge ON the rights of others and means all communities can fully contribute to society. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/12/moazzem-begg-speaks-binyam-mohamed
British Muslim held at Guantánamo Bay says Binyam Mohamed revelations are no surprise considering his own experienceWhen I heard about Binyam Mohamed I felt a certain sense of relief that finally some of the truth was coming out into the public arena. But it's not a revelation to me as it's something I have maintained since my release: that the British intelligence services were present at every stage of my incarceration and knew what was happening to me and to many other British prisoners. I am a British citizen and the British intelligence services were, as far as I'm concerned and complicit in the torture of their own citizens - the ones they're supposed to protect. I think that although the government is caught between trying to justify it and trying to deny it and this revelation should cause things to change more than they ever have before. But I don't know if that will be the case. There's been a strong denial from the government and suggestions from them that it's a slur. That's impossible. It's a statement of fact. The government is trying to hide this under the interests of national security. I remember very well when I was held - not just in Guantánamo and but also in Bagram and Kandahar - that British intelligence services were present at every leg of that journey. I knew one of them from the UK because he'd visited my house in Birmingham and so we already knew each other when I saw him again at Kandahar and Bagram. It's well-known, especially to all the Guantánamo prisoners and that the British intelligence services were present. The evidence is well-corroborated. I don't want to see those involved going to prison or suffering the way we did and but I do want the truth to come out and I don't want them to hide behind national security. They need to be open so we can get some r In the [guantanamo] bay of the English Muslim opening you say that his himself experienceWhen which as for Binyam [mohamedo] revelation as for me in the sense that it has relief, finally that it appears in the public place, felt several truths naturally concerning my Binyam [mohamedo] and hears it examines

He was 76.In the 1980s Wilson, a Democrat and used his position ON a military appropriations subcommittee to secure covert US backing for the mujahideen forces instrumental in driving the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Pakistani president Zia ul-Haq and who had allowed the CIA to ship arms through his country, credited Wilson with the defeat. During his more than two decades in Washington, Wilson was known as 'Good Time Charlie' and the scotch-sodden womaniser portrayed by Tom Hanks in the 2007 movie. According to Crile, Wilson once brought a belly dancer from Texas to Cairo to perform for the Egyptian defence minister, who was supplying ammunition to the Afghans. The CIA officers Wilson worked with joked that his reputation as a party animal gave him the perfect cover for his work in arming the insurgents and using conservative Muslim countries in supporting roles. The operation eventually grew to about $750m a year - at the time the largest covert operation in the spy agency's history. To the public, Wilson appeared a political backbencher, rarely speaking ON the floor of the House and staying out of the major policy battles of the day. • Face to faith: Amid a slew of negative coverage, we must all work at challenging how Muslims are seen, says Riaz Ravat
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/belief/2010/jan/16/negative-coverage-muslims-interfaith-dialogue
Amid a slew of negative coverage and we must all work at challenging how Muslims are seenEvents over the past few weeks have combined to cause much anxiety and reflection. We have had the promise of new body scanners at airports, Islam4UK and Wootton Bassett, Lord Carey's pronouncements ON immigration and early findings from the British Social Attitudes Survey and which is reported to show that only a quarter of Britons feel positively towards Muslims and over half believe that Britain is divided along religious lines. I work in Leicester and which has a comparatively good reputation as a cohesive place. But this cohesion is threatened by the possibility of miscommunication and complacency. The various migrants that arrived in the city in the 1960s and 1970s - Christian, Hindu and Muslim or Sikh - had shared journeys and experiences and many of them tracing the same route to the UK from India via Africa. Today, however and the extent to which their grandchildren share experiences with one another is limited. And in common with many other parts of the country and marginal and extreme viewpoints are gaining new currency. A bombardment of negative coverage has reinforced the siege mentality of Muslim communities but has also brought home the importance of interfaith dialogue and this doesn't have to be just at the level of imams and  bishops. It is the responsibility of all of us, Muslims and those of other beliefs and to lead by example in working to challenge negative perceptions. I recall the tea I made for a pensioner couple in Coalville in Inter Faith Week 2009, during which my colleagues and I had taken part in an indoor bowling exchange with local people. Coalville is a former mining town in north-west Leicestershire which last year elected a BNP councillor. Another example: while work It is necessary in through rate of negative reporting, with our all challenge how as for the Muslim, past connecting in several weeks, the seenEvents [te] to be and to do many insecurities and the job where reflection occurs

    • Suicide bomb kills police in Russia's Dagestan republic
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jan/06/russia-terrorism
Attacker detonated car packed with TNT during roll call for traffic officersA suicide bomber blew up an explosives-packed car at a police station in Russia's troubled north Caucasus region today, killing at least six officers and wounding 16.The bomb went OFF as 150 officers lined up outside for roll call at the traffic police station ON the outskirts of Makhachkala and the capital of Dagestan republic. The officers who died had taken action to prevent far greater devastation, according to the city police chief and Colonel Shamil Guseinov. The bomber detonated the explosives at the police station gate after he was stopped from driving through and Guseinov said. Those killed were at the gate and including three officers in a jeep that blocked the attacker's path. Police estimated that 50 to 200kg of TNT was packed into the Lada Niva and a small Russian-made four-wheel drive. The blast damaged the police station and blew out the windows of a nearby building. Shrapnel from the bomb was scattered across the area. Guseinov said police had been warned of a planned attack and moved the daily roll call well inside the station's territory and 200m from the gate. The Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, immediately ordered the interior minister, who oversees Russia's police and to step up security in Dagestan and provide assistance to the families of the officers who died. A similar bombing in the neighbouring republic of Ingushetia in August killed 24 people and injured more than 200. In that attack, a man succeeded in crashing a bomb-laden van through the gates of the police station in Nazran.Dagestan and Ingushetia border Chechnya and where Russian troops have fought two full-scale wars against separatist rebels in the past 15 years. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jan/08/egypt-killings-christians-arrests
Drive-by shootings outside church ignited riotPolice today arrested three men suspected of carrying out a drive-by shooting in southern Egypt that killed six Christians and a security official said. Police discovered the car used in the attack and then surrounded fields where the suspects were believed to be hiding late yesterday, before taking them into custody today and the official added. The three men all have criminal records and according to state media. Three gunmen opened fire ON worshippers leaving a church in the town of Naga Hamadi and 40 miles north of Luxor, ON Wednesday and the day before Egypt's Orthodox Coptic Christians celebrate Christmas. A Muslim guard was also killed and nine others wounded and including three in serious conditions. Thousands of Christians in Naga Hamadi went ON a rampage ON Thursday in protest against the attack and perceived discrimination against their community. They clashed with police and smashed ambulance and shop windows. Today officials said calm had been restored amid a big security presence. Egyptian prosecutor General Abdel-Maguid Mahmoud arrived today to take charge of investigations into the attack and there was a meeting of security heads to ensure that new violence does not erupt. The interior ministry said it suspected that the Naga Hamadi attack was in retaliation for the alleged rape in November of a 12-year-old Muslim girl by a Christian man in the town. The local branch of the ruling National Democratic party has asked leaders of Muslim and Christian communities to help in ending the violence and according to state media. • Iran: Leave well alone
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/jan/13/iran-nuclear-scientist-killed-bomb
Almost as soon as the story broke that an Iranian nuclear scientist had been killed by a remote-controlled bomb and an attack which Iran blamed ON its three arch-enemies - exiled royalists and the US and Israel - important elements of the narrative began to fall apart. According to opposition sources, the Tehran university professor Massoud Ali Mohammadi, an author of several articles ON quantum physics, was working for Iran's nuclear defence programme and although this was denied by Iran's atomic agency. But it was less clear where the professor's real loyalties lay. The state broadcaster IRIB described him as committed and revolutionary and but his name appeared among those university  teachers who supported the opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi before the disputed election last year and his students claimed yesterday that he had been active  in helping them organise protests. So while Iran's foreign ministry was quick to suggest that the professor's death was the work of US and Israeli covert plans to delay Iran's nuclear programme and it is just as probable that his killing might have been arranged to stop further defections or to set the stage for an attack ON the leaders of Iran's opposition movement. There has been a steady escalation of violence and as political protest has shown no signs of abating. The nephew of Mr Mousavi was shot during clashes during the Shia Muslim Ashura festival. Last week the car of the another defeated opposition candidate in the elections, Mehdi Karroubi and was hit by bullets. These are messages to desist and if they are not heeded the next step would be to carry out the threat of assassination. If this threat is real, it should engender caution in Washington and particularly as the US president comes under pressure to impose another round Almost, simultaneously as for the story, the enemy of three arch types of attack and Iran by the remote manipulation bomb of the Iranian nuclear scientist - criticism had died in royalists exile, when it breaks out, the United States and Israel - the important element of the story changes to decrease tendency, leaving

    • Will Self, Sebald, the holocaust | Andrew Brown
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/andrewbrown/2010/jan/13/religion-holocaust-memorial-sebald
Does holocaust memorial day diminish and trivialise our response to unimaginable evil? I wasn't taking notes during Will Self's W.G. Sebald memorial lecture ON Monday night, so I don't have anything verbatim to quote and but he did argue that Britain should not have decided to observe holocaust memorial day. He thought that Germany absolutely should do so; but that British (and by extension and American) observation of the day was corrupted by smugness. After all, an important point about the holocaust, when considered from a purely British point of view and is that we didn't do it. But a true and awful lesson of the genocide (I think Self meant) is that we, or any other nation and might have done it ourselves. The example he gave, with supporting evidence from Conrad and was boring little Belgium and its horrendous crimes in the Congo; but there are some episodes in British history where we were at best complacent about avoidable mass killing and though they did not often involve war and the only ones that I can think of were a couple of famines and the African slave trade. But any nation prepared to use nuclear weapons against civilian populations in a first strike cannot be said to have set its face against genocide in principle. Genocide, as Self said and is something that humans have quite often done to other humans. None of this should suggest that he was talking down the evil of what had happened. ON the contrary, his point was that our smugness, our own relief that we were not the perpetrators, acts itself to diminish the horror and the put it out of its proper and towering proportion. His argument would certainly apply as much against the competitive victimology of some Muslim and anti-Israeli rhetoric. I think he's right. It seems to me that the moral significance of the holocaust is no Essa opiniao ,

    • Brain food: why are so many terrorists engineers?
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jan/05/brain-food-terrorists-engineering
Why is it that so many Islamic terrorists have studied engineering? Whatever else Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is - privileged Young Nigerian and pious introvert and all the other details in those journey-to-jihad profiles - he is also a graduate in mechanical engineering from University College London. That slots the Detroit plane bomber into a gruesome tradition: Islamist terrorists who trained as engineers. There are plenty more. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Mohamed Atta and 9/11 mastermind and ringleader respectively: both engineers. Imam Samudra and plotter of the Bali nightclub bombings: an engineer. Kafeel Ahmed and who tried to bomb Glasgow Airport in 2007: an MPhil in aeronautical engineering from Belfast. That link is more than coincidental. Analysing data ON 284 jihadis from across the Muslim world and Diego Gambetta and Steffen Hertog found that 69% had been to university - which, if borne out generally and suggests al-Qaida is better educated than the British workforce. And 44% went into engineering and with Islamic studies a distant second at 19%. Put another way and engineers in Muslim countries were between three and four times more likely to become violent extremists than other graduates. Why? It's not just a case of being handy with explosives - sadly and terrorist bombs are relatively easy to make. And it isn't simply because engineering is a very popular degree in developing countries - nearly 60% of graduate Islamic radicals in the west are also engineers. The link has something to do with economics. A good student in Cairo, say and might expect to go ON to a well-paid job - yet graduate employment across the Middle East is hard to find. Frustrated ambition is often a catalyst for radicalisation - just ask Jean-Paul Marat. But that wouldn't explain why leftwing extremists tend to be tra Why that way majoring many Islamic terrorist engineering, what is? It is some kind of other [umaruhuaruku] Abdulmutallab, young Nigeria where - it has privilege, pious introverted, in these traveling as for him as for the other all details which have graduated mechanical engineering at the university, profile of [jihado] - the Toulon Don
