Such a form of dress is not, to our knowledge and worn by anyone in the local community. Not a single Muslim female has visited Mr Hollobone, veiled or unveiled and since he was elected. Our town has its share of social challenges and but it is plain to us that none of them relate to problems that can be linked to any religious issues. In the past Mr Hollobone has expended great energy ON issues that genuinely affect his constituents. It is our hope that he might refocus his priorities to the benefit of those whom he has been elected to serve.   It doesn't surprise me, really and that the number of Americans believing Barack Obama is a Muslim has gone up in 14 months from 11% to 18%, according to a survey out today from Pew (Time magazine got 24% in another poll released today). Here we have a case where a group of people is quite vocally arguing that he is, while no one is bothering to argue the opposite case and that he isn't. There are two reasons for this. First and it's just self-evident to those of us who believe (know) he's not a Muslim that he's not a Muslim. As Colin Powell admirably said once and not that there would be anything wrong with that; but it just isn't the case. So why argue the point? Does one who believes the sun rises in the east have to run around arguing the point? No. Because it's just reality. The second reason is more problematic, because here, the doubter might say, okay, if he's Christian and what church did he go to? Ooops. There's an answer to that question, but it is too politically problematic, involving as it does old Reverend Wright, so for the doubters and that's not a particularly reassuring answer. But the real problem is that you have vocal people out there arguing that he's a Muslim, and no one countering it and so naturally more people are going to listen. If a lie is going unanswered and it will gather adherents. It puts Obama's defenders in a SPOT, because having to launch a group called something like obamaisachristian.com is kind of pathetic and will just generate a bunch of news stories about how strange it is that it's come to this, and those stories in turn, the mere existence of them and will nourish the lie. (By the way and proving my point, obamaisachristian.com is not registered! You can order it right now if you like and add obamaisachristian.co.uk for an extra $38 for two years.)   We are disturbed by the visible rise, in some parts of the country and of anti-Muslim bigotry resulting in sporadic attacks ON Muslims and their places of worship. We deplore this and condemn it unreservedly. However and the authors of  the letter you published (Islamophobia is a threat to democracy and 25 March) are quite wrong to equate legitimate concerns about the leadership of the East London Mosque and the Islamic Forum of Europe with anti-Muslim bigotry. To do so betrays those who have  genuinely suffered discrimination. The East London Mosque has frequently  allowed intemperate clerics to speak ON its premises and some of whom have promoted values antithetical to those required in a tolerant and progressive society. They intimidate and bully other Muslims into accepting their contested theology as undisputed truth. Their allies and associates across south Asia have encouraged discrimination against minorities and opposed the reform of family laws and supported laws ON blasphemy. How can it be right for those of us who believe in liberal democracy to leave unchallenged those who would discriminate against religious minorities, women and homosexuals and Muslims with dissenting or heterodox views? Criticism of incitement to religious hatred has nothing to do with excluding Muslims from the political process and as the supporters of the East London Mosque and Islamic Forum of Europe suggest. There are many impeccably non-sectarian Muslims active in political life, including in parliament and who are capable of opposing both racism and fundamentalism. The greatest threat to democracy comes from reactionary and sectarian political groupings. We are disturbed by the rise of confessional identity politics in this country. Those who would promote such politics deserve robust scrutiny.
