017 This new release of the Sailor Moon manga is based on the Japanese re-release that came out a few years back to coincide with the airing of the live action series , Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon on Japanese television .
In addition to creating all new covers for the manga , Naoko Takeuchi went back to redraw a lot of the interior pages , adding more detail to characters and items and even making some small edits to the text ( though nothing that changed the story in any major way ) .
The chapters were also reorganised for these new volumes to create a more cohesive series . All of the short stories were removed from the regular story arcs and were collected in two separate manga volumes that were released after the main series was finished .
This English adaption contains all of these improvements and the artwork looks fantastic with no noticeable loss in quality with the transition .
This release is slightly larger than the Japanese manga though and instead of the slipcase cover we are given a regular one . This is hardly unusual though as all other English releases of manga series do the same .
A great motivator for picking up this release is the colour pages at the beginning of the volume though it must be said that they seem to have made a mistake during printing and have printed one of the black and white pages on a glossy page meant for colour artwork .
Despite this minor printing error that doesn't detract from the release at all , the Sailor Moon manga has never looked this good for English speaking readers and earns itself five stars for presentation .
Story
Those Moonies who have only ever seen the Sailor Moon anime are in for a very nice surprise when they finally check out the manga . The story and characters are written with a lot more depth and important details that were excluded from the anime .
This first volume of the re-released Sailor Moon manga covers a lot of the first major story arc introducing the reader to Sailor Moon , Mercury , Mars , Jupiter and through several print and computer game cameos , Sailor V . Those expecting the filler pace of the anime may be shocked by just how fast the story progresses and how quickly enemies are defeated and new ones appear but this is actually a good thing as it leaves a lot more room for manga only plot and character developments later on .
Having said that it does feel as if some characters , particularly Sailor Mars and Naru aren't given the character moments they deserve in this volume and having personally read future volumes of the manga and seeing just how much Naoko Takeuchi's characterisation and pacing improves I'm going to give the story in this volume a three and a half out of five stars . This volume of Sailor Moon is good but it gets so much better !
Adaption
One of the biggest fears myself and many other Sailor Moon fans had concerning this release was the possible mixing of Japanese phrases in the English translation which would have , in my opinion made the manga completely unreadable .
In the months building up to the re-release many fans noticed that the official product description on Amazon used the phrase Sailor Senshi ( Japanese for Sailor Soldier ) and an article of new Sailor Moon merchandise used the Japanese name for Tuxedo Mask , Tuxedo Kamen .
As soon as I received my copy of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon #1 one of the first things I did after filming and uploading my Sailor Moon #1 Unboxing Video was skim through and check for these possible changes .
Thankfully Tuxedo Mask is Tuxedo Mask and the girls refer to themselves as Sailor Guardians which is an acceptable interpretation of Sailor Senshi and matches the English title of the manga , Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon which is also used on the Japanese manga covers .
Unfortunately while those involved in the adaption didn't mix those words they've randomly decided to throw in other Japanese words which could have easily been replaced with their English equivalent .
Makoto addresses her teacher as Sensei even though Sir could have been used or sensei removed completely without affecting the meaning of what she said ( which was actually done in the original TokyoPop adaption ) , the characters refer to each other with Japanese honorifics even when it sounds completely unnatural in English .
Usagi's brother Shingo calls Luna Kitty-chan ( Kitty would have been fine ) and Luna refers to the princess they're looking for as Princess-Sama ( which as many Moonies have pointed out seems highly redundant and even if the translator wanted to stick super close to the original meaning they could have used Her Highness the Princess or something similar ) .
What makes this more confusing ( i.e . distracting for the reader ) is when they randomly decide to translate similar phrases ( are they keeping or translating them ? ) but do so so directly that it looks incredibly awkward . A prime example is Motoki who several characters call Oni-san ( brother ) in the original Japanese .
1 ) The translator doesn't include the san honorific which destroys any consistency they were trying to keep with their adaption . You can't pick and choose . Either you're keeping honorifics ( which you shouldn't in a professional translation ) or you're not .
2 ) It gets translated as Bro ! . . . . when said by Usagi . This not only breaks the characterisation of the character but also creates a very different impression for the reader than they would have gotten reading the original Japanese . Having Usagi yell out Motoki ! would have actually been a lot more emotionally close to her yelling out Oni-san ! in Japanese but due to some compulsion to have everything be so literally close to the original Japanese what we get on a very regular basis is lots of panels that are emotionally different from the original .
Ask any professional translator and they will tell you that sometimes it's necessary to change what is said to keep the original meaning . If you haven't already I highly recommend checking out this documentary on anime subbing ( that you can watch for free on YouTube ! ) . I very much agree 100% with the narrator's views on translation .
There also seems to be some very odd phrasing of dialogue that made me stop reading several times and wonder if this was even adapted by a native English speaker . Such gems as I admit it myself , I'm a bit of a cry baby ( surely I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit of a cry baby is more natural ) , Ms Bump Head ( wtf ) and Luna and Usagi's conversation about being nervous so you can get up in the morning ( see pic ) really boggle the mind .
And the less said about Ai / Love being mistranslated as Beauty in th first half of the book and then being read as Love in the second half the better .
There's also the occasional mistranslation that unintentionally makes Usagi , who is supposed to be your everyday 14 year old schoolgirl sound rather posh .
When she sees Tuxedo Mask leave for the first time , instead of whispering something along the lines of ( from the Japanese Suteki ! ) He's so handsome ! we get a simple How wonderful . . . ! and when she's kicked out of class due to being late , the original Japanese Mo . . . . . which is basically the equivalent of Oh man ! or This sucks ! gets interpreted as Oh , honestly ! .
I half expect her to start asking for tea and crumpets !
I do have to say that compared to previous translations of the Sailor Moon manga , this adaption does a much better job when it comes to plot and details though . Nothing is left out and everything is translated so fans shouldn't worry about getting any incorrect information with this release .
The unnatural dialogue though and the unnecessary and unprofessional inclusion of random honorifics affects it's readability massively though bringing my rating for the adaption down to two and a half stars out of five .
It is a good quality translation ( the best English speaking Sailor Moon fans have had ! ) but it feels incomplete and rushed in so many ways and would have benefited greatly from an editor or proofreader before it's release . ( The final page in the manga says the translator and the letterer were the only people involved in it's adaption ! )
Overall
After literally years of waiting , the Sailor Moon manga is back in print ! If you've never read the manga , I can't recommend it enough ! The Sailor Moon manga has so many more characters , plot points and epic moments than the anime . It's not hard to see why many who have read it claim it to be their favourite form of the series .
Should you buy this re-release if you've already read , or still own , the original TokyoPop Sailor Moon manga ? Absolutely yes ! While there are obvious issues with the translation that could either drive you up the wall ( like me ) or leave you indifferent , the new artwork on almost all of the 237 pages , new colour pages and cover are definitely something you will want to see .
The Sailor Moon manga has never looked so good . Let's just hope that future volumes improve the reading experience too .

The new translation returns Usagi to her rightful name - no Bunny or Serena , with the rest of the cast returning to their original japanese names as well . The manga reads right to left , without the flipped drawings that were in the previous translation . Minor things have been updated to show updates in technology , such as a floppy disk becoming a CD . These updates are handed down from a recent rerelease of the Sailor Moon manga over in Japan , and are completely unnoticeable if you aren't looking for them . Honorifics have been preserved well for the most part , although I did cringe a little at a ' Princess-sama ' moment . A minor complaint is that names have been swapped around to english format , of First Name , Last Name rather than kept to their original Last Name , First Name , however this is a pretty common thing to do when translating manga over .
If you have before only been a fan of the Sailor Moon anime , it is a HUGE recommendation that you pick up the Sailor Moon manga . The manga has a much smaller age gap between Usagi and Mamoru . Instead of Mamoru being in college while Usagi is in middle school , Mamoru is a scant 2 - 3 years older in High School to her Middle School . The interaction between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask flows much more naturally and rather than only at the end of the first season , with Tuxedo Mask discovering who Usagi is at an earlier stage . The anime seems to have played up Usagi's stupidity to a higher extent , and the first volume alone already has Luna praising Usagi for her insights .

003 Ever since the ill fated Mixx / Tokyopop lost their license to the series I've been hoping that Sailor Moon would eventually hit these shores again and they have . Happy day !
Fangirl gush aside , I really enjoyed this volume . The artwork is gorgeous , which is what you'd expect for a mangaka of Takeuchi's caliber . It's interesting to flip through the pages and let my eyes slide over the illustrations .
The translations are a little awkward at times , though . One of the things that Kodansha really hyped up was that they were going to be as faithful as possible , which included the honorifics . I was actually looking forward to this since I enjoy reading honorifics for the most part . I enjoyed much of the honorifics but I'd be lying if I said that some of them just felt really silly to tack on . Things that sound fantastic in Japanese with the untranslated word just sound clunky here , such as Hime-Sama being turned into Princess-Sama . ( As one reviewer so aptly put it . ) I think that Kodansha just tried a little too overly hard to stay faithful to the original translations , possibly due to all of the complaints over the Tokyopop translations . This just doesn't come across as organically as it should , which might bore a few readers .
I can't really hate the Sailor Moon manga for this and I waffled over giving it 4 stars and giving it 5 stars . I eventually had to concede that while the flaws didn't ruin my experience as a whole , they were definitely noticeable and kind of interrupted my reading at least slightly .
For the Sailor Moon fans , this is an absolute 100% must buy . For any new readers or those on the fence , I'd still recommend it . It's worth having in my opinion and the awkward translations should ease up over time as Kodansha gets used to what they do and don't have to add .

006 As some other reviewers have said , I think the manga is the best way the story was told . The translations might be a bit mediocre and confusing , but I guess we know what we're in for . They rate manga now , do I have to be 13 to buy this book ? Funny .
These updated mangas have a couple more arcs in them than the previous ones , much to my liking . The story is still funny , exciting , fresh and suspenseful . The anime was too slow at times , and then too fast .
If you're a fan , get it before it's gone ! At my Barnes and Nobles they had one copy left . ONE .
Still proof that Sailormoon has as much power and influence as before . Go Takeuchi !
There are 6 arcs , Usagi / Sailor Moon , Ami / Sailor Mercury , Rei / Sailor Mars , Masquerade Dance Party , Makoto Kino / Sailor Jupiter and Tuxedo Mask .
Remaining spoiler free , I just want to say that the manga moves a lot faster unlike the anime which had preriods of being too slow , then too fast like slaughterhouse episodes where 3 + people die .
Read it the way you like and keep in mind it's translated . Lovely artwork and story . Can't wait for the next 11 ! Ugh it's taking forever !

When Tokyopop owned the rights to this manga , the translation was full of errors , Americanization , and had a tendency to flip-flop between the anime-dub names and the original names or Tokypop-ized names . This new translation , straight from the company that owns the Japanese version , is far more pure in its translation . All the original names are maintained , and the senshi are referred to as Pretty Sailor Guardians - a far cry from their Scout counterparts in the original translation . The only thing that brought down my grading of this manga is that there are some obvious typos and mispellings , such as constantly referring to Sailor Moon's broach , and misuse of who's / whose . An editor would , or should , have helped greatly in this department and I sincerely hope such flaws aren't going to be a continuing problem in the future releases .

The first page of the actual translated story has even been done in full colour on glossy paper . There are very detailed translation notes at the end of the manga ( book ) too , including cultural translations such as what a Seminar is in Japan , and why Usagi is literally nicknamed Bun-Head ( Odango in Japanese ^ _ ^ ) . Speaking of which , all characters are indeed referred to by their original names : Usagi Tsukino , Mamoru Chiba , etc . . Even location names are kept original .

The translation is much better than Mixx's original translation from the 1990s ! The art is crisp , the paper quality is great , and the story is just as great as I remember ! I'm definitely pre-ordering every volume ! ^ . ~ Happy reading fellow Sailor Moon fans !

OH MY GOD . Where do I even start ? !
Sailor Moon is back after it's way to long absence and I don't think any Sailor Moon fan could find something negative to say about that . I'll start with a few thinks that caught my attention .
The graphics / coloring are top of the line , up-to-date and worth every penny . As soon as I opened the box the outstanding colors made it completely impossible to have asked for any better . Every page is flawless with the new coloring , and is more updated since it's first release . I don't speak Japanese , which is why I'm very happy to have the English version of these Mangas .
The translation itself is actually surprisingly really good . It isn't something that would make me turn away from reading it . I don't find any problems with the translations .
I'm just so happy that I can't even write a long review . All I really need to say is if your a fan then GET THE NEW MANGA ! Also , get Codename : Sailor V ! It's amazing also ! A + all the way baby !

I have never read the Sailor Moon manga , I've only watched the anime .
The horrible , over edited , badly dubbed English version , when I was about 4 or 5 years old .
I was probably the happiest person alive , learning that the manga would get a new translation , after being out of print for years .
The anime I loved was finally getting a manga translation , and I could see where it all began .
As I was reading it , I couldn't help but remember my childhood , all those fond memories and wanting to be just like Sailor Moon when I was younger .
I'm also glad that Codename Sailor V came out , as I never got to watch more than the first season , and I was happy to get that too .

022 This manga was one of the best re-releases I've read . I was suprised to see so many changes or should I say improvements ! For those that own the 1st edition , this is a must have . The newer translations stayed more true to the original story that was released in Japan . I was extremely happy with the flow of the story and the updates . I think it better suites the plot and I can't wait to read the next one !

The first Sailor Moon manga released in English was not all that great it effect the story a bit in my opinion & lots of fanatics were upset & demanded a new translation but it never happened . After years of absence Kodansha Comics acquired the rights to the manga & decided to release the manga to the U.S . with all new accurate translation , updated art work , & with the original Japanese names it was way to good to be true . The new Logo is really beautiful it resembles the 2004 Live Action Sailor Moon Japanese logo which is now used for every Sailor Moon product in Japan . The back of the book & spine are plain white with clip art of the Kodansha Comics & Sailor Moon logo . The back of the book has a chibi style art of Sailor Moon very cute and eye catching really ties the whole book together .
The story focuses on a 14 year old middle school student named Usagi who encounters a black cat on her way to school . She notices a crescent moon bald spot on the cats forehead but ignores the cat entirely & takes off to school becuase she is late once again . Usagi is the F student of the class always late for school & always slacks off on her school work . She prefers eating , sleeping , & video games in that order . She goes threw her day at school and comes home and falls asleep in her bedroom she is awaken by the black cat she came across earlier . The cat is a magical cat who can speak . The cat Luna tells her she is the chosen guardian Sailor Moon to be exact . Usagi finds it difficult to adjust to her new life style as Sailor Moon which is why Luna keeps her eye out for allies . As the story progresses 3 new guardians join Sailor Moon . Sailor Mercury ( Ami ) , Sailor Mars ( Rei ) , Sailor Jupiter ( Makoto ) to defeat the evil forces and stop them from finding the Legendary Silver Crystal a power full crystal who in the hands of anyone will be able to control the universe . The guardians also have to find the Moon Princess to protect her from the evil forces . A very good start to the manga It now sounds like a basic magical girl story but as the manga progresses the story telling and plot gets better and better I promise you .
The new adaption / translation is off to a great start better and bigger than before it's doing the new edition justice unlike the previous releases failed to do . The manga has a lot of Japanese culture references , jokes and original Japanese words . The back of the book has translation notes it's sort of a mini dictionary I recommend using it & reading it first before reading the whole manga . So that your educated on some of the words before hand so you won't be left confused wondering what they meant . It's just two pages long , It's very short & sweet definitions and notes . It won't hurt reading it first .
Over all Sailor Moon is back bigger and better than ever after a long absence off the market she is well received by the U.S . This is the best adaption of the manga and a must buy for any Sailor Moon fan , Any magical girl loving manga readers at that . Sailor Moon is the cover girl for the magical girl genre and is the #1 most recognizable anime / manga character in the world . This is Naoko Takeuchi's best and most famous beloved work ever . I recommend it to everyone ! !
024 The first Sailor Moon manga released in English was not all that great it effect the story a bit in my opinion & lots of fanatics were upset & demanded a new translation but it never happened . After years of absence Kodansha Comics acquired the rights to the manga & decided to release the manga to the U.S . with all new accurate translation , updated art work , & with the original Japanese names it was way to good to be true . It's official Sailor Moon is back and better than ever .

Since Sailor Moon is celebrating its 20th anniversary , I was hoping and praying for the companies in the US to pick up the license again and do a re-release . Sailor Moon was one of my first anime loves , but as a kid I didn't really have the money to buy the videos , and at the time the manga came in small installments and I had no interest in it back then . Now that I'm older , I've been fervently hunting down both forms so that I can keep it for nostalgia sake .
I can honestly say that I wasn't disappointed in this re-release . They keep it faithful to the original names and format , however , as one reviewer mentioned , it may seem a touch disjointed at times with the honorifics . That aside , the Sailor Moon story is a classic style of a super hero-romance that seems a little campy from time to time , but was one of the foundations that inspired so many current shoujo titles enjoyed in anime and manga today .

027 Sailor Moon is my childhood . I grew up with the German version of the manga and anime and love it to this day . When I was in Japan a while ago , I purchased the mangas - even though can't read them and I was super excited when I heard the it will also be re-released in the English speaking world . I couldn't wait and when the Amazon box with the manga arrived I started reading immediately .
However my excitement was soon stifled , when I noticed the first weird things in the translation . First of all , I don't like that they write the English translation of the sound effects underneath the Japanese one and or under the panes ( it ruins the look and covers up more space ) . And if they translate them , they make no sense in English - Kyaaa ? I mean , what's that supposed to mean in English , shouldn't that be whaa or ahhh or something like this ? I know it's Japanese and all - but this is an English translation , so there should be an effort to translate it into English . If people wanted to read only Japanese words , then they surely would learn the language and read the Japanese version .
Then there are honorific issues , such as kitty-chan which are complete nonsense and just shouldn't be there . English does not have honorifics and therefore they should be accurately translated or left out . Simple as that . If you read a book translated from another language into English your are not supposed to be constantly confronted with the original language , but be able to enjoy it without needing to know every single detail of the linguistic and cultural aspects of the country of origin . And it does the story absolutely no harm to leave them out . They had no such stuff included in the ( original translated ) German manga and I never felt like I missed out on something or have difficulties to understand the story .
There are also plenty of grammar mistakes and really strange translation such as You should act more nervously . . . wth . . . I know that's an expression taken word by word from Japanese but is complete nonsense in English . All in all the translation seems very rushed and not properly edited . If they needed more time for that , that's fine - but this I think is an insult to us hardcore fans and new readers , who spent money to buy the mangas .
As you can see , I am very disappointed by the translation . I felt like I can now get my Sailor Moon virgin hubby to read it , but he must be thinking this is just too weird for him and is probably gonna be put off , as are so many who will read it for the first time and had no prior exposure to mangas . By now I read Sailor V 1 and Sailor Moon 2 and unfortunatley their translations are just as bad if not worse . . . . : (
I have to say on the plus side , that I love the look and the size which is bigger than the Japanese version . It's purely beautiful to look at and the colour pages are a fantastic treat .
Of course I want all the mangas of the series , but I just wish they would take more care and time to produce a professional translation and not this hush hush stuff they delivered here .

028 Oh , Sailor Moon . I watch the dubbed anime as a kid and loved it , and a few years ago , I watched the entire anime subbed and loved the series even more . So as a fan of the anime , it's pretty exciting for me to finally get my hands on an English translation of the manga .
But after reading volume 1 , I have to say that I like the anime better than the manga . The anime has better pacing and definitely expands on the details . So far I feel like I barely know the characters outside of Usagi , because the story rushes to introduce a new sailor senshi almost every chapter . I'm also not finding the villains ( not the monsters but the Dark Kingdom baddies ) that scary or formidable , because they get very little screen time or they're just too much in the background . Despite that , I do love the story , and I hope volume 2 will better in that area . I also especially love the art . The author has a pretty style , and her narration is okay to follow even though sometimes I think the pages can be a little cluttered .
So even though I'm not fond of the manga as much as the anime , I do plan on collecting the series . I normally don't collect manga since it can be expensive , but as a Sailor Moon fan , I can't pass it up . It's neat to see the original source that started it all .
029 I really love the revamped Sailor Moon manga . for one thing , the translations are more accurate and less awkward-sounding .
and another thing , this volume is really thick and has most acts or chapters as they're more known as . It even has some
acts that I didn't get to buy the first time around . Before in the past , I had to buy those thin , 5 - 10 page large comic
books that I had to get every month or else they'd be gone . As an result I didn't get the complete set like I wanted .
With this revamped Sailor Moon volume 1 book , it's gotten much easier . : )
looking forward to buying more volumes of this series !
030 I once had an day dream that if I ever got rich that I would go to Japan and buy the Sailor Moon series and have it published properly to take the bad taste out of my mouth every time I saw what Mixx did to it . ( V-Babe really ? ? ? ) Now I don't have to and the translation is wonderful ! The only thing I would do differently would be to return all the color art to color .

I was extremely excited when I heard that Sailor Moon was being reprinted . I didn't much care for the old novels , because of the way they wore out and fell apart after some time . I also didn't like the fact that the originals weren't translated into authentic manga style .
I really wasn't sure what to expect out of the new prints . But I was able to guess how it would turn out based on how today's manga are printed . And I was not one bit disappointed ! The one thing that I really liked about the new Manga , is that the first couple of pages in the manga are printed in color . I also like the fact that they put a few notes in the end of the manga for those of us who really don't follow Japanese culture as much as other otaku do .
All in all , I'm pretty happy with the Manga . And I can't wait to get the other volumes when they come out !

037 Been a fan of Sailor Moon since I first saw it on YTV in Canada years ago . But I avoided picking up the manga for years because while I liked the basic story , the English translation left a lot to be desired . It was as though the people doing had a very poor grasp of English , much less Japanese .
Now the remastered edition has come out and I'm really liking what I see so far . The English dialogue is vastly superior to the previous attempt by leaps and bounds . I would heartily recommend this to both long time and newer generations of fans .

I've been a manga fan for only 13 years , so Sailor Moon was before my time . I once looked at the tiny Tokyopop edition and was perhaps not ready to appreciate this . I also had the misfortune to once be exposed to Sailor Moon S which is so hyperactive as to be unintelligible . This time its different ; now I understand why this is a classic .
I see many familiar things in volume 1 ; ideas or motifs I've seen in work by Clamp , Akamatsu , Fujishima . . . all the heavy hitters . But since Sailor Moon came first , I realize that these familiar elements are tributes to ( this ) earlier work . Clearly , Sailor Moon has had a lasting impact on manga of all kinds . If you care about the history & development of manga , this is a must read . And its fun !
Artwork : Distinctive and really beautiful . Even a little sexy , in a restrained fashion . The color extra of Sailor Moon behind the front cover is fantastic ! The chibi's are actually cute rather than ugly , as is more common today .
The larger size of the current release is a blessing and really helps you appreciate the art . The translation is excellent , leaving enough Japanese cultural references for an otaku to appreciate .
Characters : The main character is not a cookie cutter shoujo heroine . Usagi has the potential for a lot of growth , meaning that she starts out not only ditzy , but actually weak willed and lazy . Her troupe is a lot more together .
For some reason , I've always been more attracted to Sailor Mercury than Sailor Moon ( having seen costumes at cons , etc . ) . In this volume , I'm finding lovable qualities in all the characters , even the bad guys . We don't know much about the bad guys ( who die pretty easily for mid-level bosses ) , except that they're bishonen . I like it that you can't tell they're bad guys just from they way they look ( think , hairy ogre ) . As a result they feel more real . But don't get me wrong , the story isn't very deep , at least not so far . Cardcaptor Sakura didn't start out very deep , either , and looks a lot like SM in some ways .
Tuxedo Mask is perhaps the least interesting character . But at least he holds back and lets Usagi take care of her own business . Like killing things that look a lot like human beings . I was a little surprised and pleased to see SM get her hands dirty .
Strangely , there are only 4 Sailors , instead of the canonical 5 . Does this eventually change ? And who is Sailor V ? Apparently , she has manga too . Lucky for me , I have much more to explore .
Something I'd like to know : When Usagi ( translates to Rabbit ) is offscreen , a little bunny symbol is used to identify her , much Tohru's onigiri in Fruits Basket . Who invented this ?

The new editions of the Sailor Moon manga are based on the Japanese re-releases for the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon live-action TV show . I have to say , the quality of the book itself is impressive . Finally , we get color pages at the front , not washed-out poorly-printed grayscale versions ! The artwork has been touched up slightly in places from the re-release editions , although it's mostly not noticeable . The size is scaled to the modern-day standard manga volume size , not the pocket editions released before . The manga artwork is no longer flipped , either . The Tokyopop version does have whiter , crisper pages , but the binding of mine is crunchy with age and the crisper pages work against ease of reading . The slightly-off-white pages of the Kodansha version will hopefully stand up to the test of time better .
In comparing the old Tokyopop volume 1 and the new Kodansha translation , a few things stand out : first of course is that the translation itself uses many more Japanese terms and ways of speech , but second is that the sound effects are no longer clumsily replaced with WordArt-esque renditions . A small translation accompanies each Japanese SFX . I find them less distracting from the story as a whole this way , although other reviewers may disagree .
There are times when the new translation is as painfully clumsy as Usagi herself , but where I was never all that charmed with Tokyopop's Bunny , I rather like the Usagi presented here . My two peeves with the translation are the decision to put quotes around Legendary Silver Crystal each and every time it's mentioned , and the bizarre choice to insert a star-and-moon symbol between the words Sailor and Moon - but only sometimes . Sailor'Moon is a bizarre choice and I hope they drop it for the volume 2 script . There were a few other spelling errors ( brooch , not broach ) that could have been caught , too , but I do have higher hopes for the rest of the series . This is only volume 1 , after all , and the team could very well improve from here .
I can't help but appreciate the good changes they've made . I will be happily collecting the entire series , errors and all .

047 The release date of Sailor Moon vol . 1 and Codename : Sailor V vol . 1 was today , so I rushed in to the bookstore in the Japan Center , San Francisco and I was so happy to see a special stand of these books piled on top of each other with a huge promotional poster . Finally ! We've been waiting for this since Kodansha announced it in March ! Now for my reviews :
Pretty Guardian-Sailor Moon Volume 1 :
The new translated releases of Sailor Moon are indeed better than the Mixx-takes that Tokyopop made . Now we expect the characters to retain their original names , as well as honorifics , like Usagi-chan , Ami-san , etc , and no more of Serena , Darien , Rini . . . Color pages are included too as well as some notes in the back . The manga drawings are enhanced and in the standard manga book format ( not the pocket mixx ones ) too . In Sailor Moon volume 1 , we get the 6 chapters : Act 1 : Usagi , Sailor Moon , Act 2 : Ami , Sailor Mercury , Act 3 : Rei , Sailor Mars , Act 4 : Masqeurade Dance Party , Act 5 : Makoto , Sailor Jupiter and Act 6 : Tuxedo Mask . This book starts out half of the Dark Kingdom Arc and leaving you wondering what's going to happen next with Usagi and Mamoru . Overall , this is a good buy for Sailor Moon and Shoujo manga fans . The translation couldn't be any more accurate , the Japanese sound effects are kept , but translates what it says and we don't have to worry anymore about the pages coming apart ! Although , instead of calling Motoki oni-san or oni-chan , they simply call him bro . That's kinda a head-scratcher though .
Codename Sailor V Volume 1 :
For those of you who never got to experience the thrill of reading Sailor V , here's your chance ! Before Usagi was Sailor Moon , Minako Aino was Sailor V and lead her own , if not serious and filled with action , comical , girly adventures about wanting to become an idol , TV star , wanting boyfriends , etc . The Sailor V manga's English translation is done in the same manner as Sailor Moon with notes at the end , colorful pages , Crazy words lower-case font and Japanese text with subs . All the stories in the Sailor V manga are hilarious and more-girl oriented in my opinion .
Overall , these are all good buys . With Sailor V finally on bookshelves in the US and with Sailor Moon completely renewed and retranslated , waiting for the remaining 11 volumes ( for Sailor Moon , one more for Sailor V , and 2 more short story books ) to come out is something us Moonie fans will be looking forward to .

After many years of waiting , Sailor Moon has finally received a decent translation . It's not perfect , by any means , but it is much better than the TokyoPop translation , in my opinion .
The language comes off as a little stiff and awkward at times , but because the translation is rather good I'm willing to forgive that . The translator does make several hard to forgive mistakes , such as translating Sailor Moon's catch phrase as The soldier of love and beauty rather than love and justice , but it is only in one chapter so I'm willing to let it slide just this once .
The art is , of course , in the original right-to-left format and the names have not been changed back and forth from the original and dub versions as in the TokyoPop version .
Overall , I'm really happy to have this translated version . It's a little rough in some spots , but I'm sure that once the translator gets into the swing of things the flow will improve .

Sailor Moon is back and better than ever ! : ) I was so happy to have this book in my hands ! ! These books were out for print for almost 6 years and counting and to able to hold the wonderful story in my hands . . . I need a tissue ! !
It opens up with Usagi and her encounter with Luna and then things change from there ! She encounters new friends and allies , and she's all about girl power ! Not to mention , she meets a mysterious man who wears a tuxedo whenever they meet and their chemistry is just too cute ! He's not a sexist jerk and he doesn't always try to save her , but instead help her and be there for her when she doesn't believe in herself . Sailor Moon fans , this is a must buy ! : )

Growing up , I was a huge fan of Sailormoon and watched all the anime episodes . This was the first Sailormoon manga I ever read and I really enjoyed it Just pre-ordered volume 2 ; can't wait for it to come in the mail !

I love Sailor Moon . I grew up watching the show and saw all the episodes in english and japanese . The first book in this manga series is very promising . It follows the anime but has a few differences so that it feels like your reading something new . The sailor scouts also have there own subtle unique style to there costumes too . The artwork looks good as well . If you were a fan of the anime you would like this manga .

Overall I find the illustrations beautiful , and the story line amazing .
I wont bore people with the details , as I'm sure they will make the decision to own this manga before reading any damming reviews .
As for responses to critiques made , I've added my own 2 cents .
Honorifics should be removed : Any manga reader would be used to reading suffixes on characters names , so this is really no big deal . People cringed at the Princess-sama example , and although Princess could have sufficed , it didn't ruin the reading experience for me .
Bun head vs Meatball head : In the newest adaptation , Usagi is called ' Bun head ' by Mamoru . While it is named after a food more popular in Japan than overseas it still makes sense . She has buns on her head , therefore bun head . Again , personally , the nickname will always be meatball head ( oh , nostalgia ) but compared to some of the translations they could have made , bun head is indicative of what hairstyle she truly has .
The ' Oh honestly ' : Being one of the phrases taken as an example of awkward translating , but to me it doesn't seem that strange . After being kicked out of class , Usagi stands in the hallways and makes the remark Oh , honestly ! Forcing a delicate young lady to stand in the hall . Of course this doesn't seem like something a normal girl would say , but I can hear the voice of English dubbed ' Serena ' saying this . While she could have said , Oh man or This sucks , I still feel as though this is an appropriate line indicative of Usagi as a young teenage girl and not as an uppity socialite .
I feel as though we should be appreciative of the fact that the Sailor Moon manga is being re-printed , and that we are lucky enough to be able to read Codename : Sailor V . If this is the best we can get , I'll sure as hell take it . However I'm sure that some awkward translating isn't going to stop people from buying a truly amazing story .

063 I pre-ordered this title and was not disappointed when it arrived , on the day it was out in perfect condition , and read it gleefully from cover to cover .
I was a Sailor Moon fan as a kid , back when it was in syndication in the beloved , yet flawed Americanized dub , and I picked up this manga out of nostalgia and curiosity . The beautiful artwork , the whimsical characters , the goofy humor mixed with a dramatic taught storyline was a treat .
Having an edition that's right to left and with a helpful glossary if you're new to manga / the series / Japanese culture makes me glad I never bought the original American translation . I cannot comment on the accuracy of the translation , as I am not fluent in Japanese , but it does seem more accurate than the last US English translation and it's definitely more accurate that the Americanized anime dub .
Not just appropriate for teens and twenty-somethings feeling nostalgic . Great for tweens and a great intro to female superheros for girls who are into princesses .

Kodansha really has not disappointed ! Make no mistake : the quality of this reprint is astounding . The pages are thick , textured paper and the book itself has heft and is durable . In terms of size , these prints are even larger than their Japanese counterparts . The Mixx / TokyoPop printings , which were flimsy with cheap binding , are nothing like these books ( in terms of their construction ) . It's also properly aligned , with right-to-left orientation , unlike the previous version . It comes complete with the color inserts at the beginning of the book too , which is rare for American manga . The translation notes are also informative without being a novel in themselves .
As to the translation , it's highly readable ! If you're coming to this expecting something like the versions produced by DiC or Mixx / TokyoPop , with are filled with slang and idiomatic constructions , you'll certainly be a little surprised . Kodansha consistently uses Standard English and direct , often literal translations from the Japanese ; in terms of purity , this translation is the embodiment of it . There are a few typos in the book , but this is the first printing so hopefully they'll be resolved in subsequent editions . All in all , I feel like Kodansha has brought the script to life much like it was originally received rather than trying to make it like the anime which , in reality , came later .

070 The main character of Sailor Moon is Usagi Tsukino , a clumsy 14 - year-old who's also a bit of a crybaby . One day , she encounters a black cat with Band-Aids on its forehead . Usagi removes the Band-Aids to reveal a moon-shaped spot on the cat's forehead ; this encounter ends up changing Usagi's life . One night , the cat visits Usagi , and reveals that it's a talking cat named Luna . Luna gives Usagi a broach , and informs her that she has been chosen as a guardian . As a guardian , it's Usagi's duties to gather allies , defeat enemies , discover the location of the Princess and the Legendary Silver Crystal . The broach gives Usagi the ability to change into an alter ego named Sailor Moon .
Over the course of this volume , Usagi is joined by three allies : a bright girl named Ami who becomes Sailor Mercury , the shrine miko Rei who becomes Sailor Mars , and a strong girl named Mako who becomes Sailor Jupiter . In addition , Usagi keeps encountering a high school boy named Mamoru ; as Sailor Moon , she keeps encountering the mysterious Tuxedo Mask . Usagi and her allies find themselves against a group that is also searching for the Legendary Silver Crystal .
The art style and tropes that Takeuchi used in Sailor Moon is definitely influenced by the shojo style from the 1970s ; this is especially evident in the facial design for character of Usagi / Sailor Moon , which bears a strong resemblance to Candice Candy White Ardlay from Candy Candy . While I personally enjoy this kind of style in manga , it can potentially be jarring to younger manga readers who are more familiar with the styles and tropes of modern shojo manga .
When I checked this manga volume out from the library , my 13 - year-old daughter asked if she could read it . Knowing my daughter's manga tastes , I thought she would enjoy it , so I told her that she could read it . After she read this volume , I asked her what she thought of it . She simply responded with , Meh . I then asked if that meant that she thought it was OK . My daughter's response was , Mom , OK isn't the word for it . It was over the top strange .
I was actually rather flabbergasted by her response , because I had been so sure that she would have liked it . If my daughter's reaction is any indication of how younger readers will react to Sailor Moon , then the series may have a harder time finding an audience with that age group .
One thing I noticed when I saw this volume is the fact that there isn't any kind of a teaser printed on the outside cover or on any pages in the front and back of the volume . It seems Kodansha took the tact that the main audience for this re-release is made up of readers who are already familiar with the property . Unfortunately , a lack of any kind of teaser of description of the item is going to make this manga volume a harder sell to potential readers who have no previous familiarity with the series .
Kodansha also included a teaser for volume two at the end ; however , the teaser is only available with Japanese text . Unfortunately , for the section that was used as the teaser , it's hard to figure out what exactly is going on with just the pictures . I wish Kodansha had either gone to effort to have the five pages translated into English , or have not included the teaser at all . However , I will give Kodansha credit for the translation notes that are included in the back of the book . Flanagan did a fantastic job of explaining the Japanese meanings of the names , as well as the Japanese concepts that are used which would have little to no familiarity with American audiences .
At the time I'm writing this review , this volume of Sailor Moon has been the number one selling manga in the United States for about two to three weeks in a row , and I would guess that the vast majority of these sales have been fueled by the nostalgia market . After experiencing my daughter's reaction to this volume , I think the series may have trouble finding a new audience with younger readers that have gotten into manga after the heyday of the Sailor Moon anime and manga . Admittedly , I wasn't into Sailor Moon during her heyday , but I found this volume to be an interesting read , and I wouldn't mind reading future volumes of this series .
Sailor Moon is rated T for teens age 13 and up .

There is new cover art , plenty of color images and rewritten script ( more on that later ) . The book is based on the Shinsoban release of this series , which was known for having revised art and dialogue . This is less noticable in the translation because the original English version was so heavily edited in the first edition . 074 Well overall they did a good job with this edition . I own 4 versions of this volume . Original Jpn / Eng and revised Jpn / Eng so I have been examining all four . The new versions strike a win in some cases and a fail in others .
1 . They did a much better job translating it overall . A lot from the Japanese version is kept such as cultural references . What I didn't like is that they translated TOO much from the Japanese . They translated chan and san which is extremely cumbersome in English since it really holds no meaning . Yes , people nowadays understand what they mean but it doesn't mean you should put it . Did we not learn our lesson in Ai Yori Aoshi ? It just doesn't make sense and gets annoying . They need to drop this in future installments . Very few words are accepted into mainstream English language , like Sensei .
2 . The sound effects were a MAJOR distractoin . If they had just left the original Japanese text , I wouldn't have been so distracted . The original books had an American-comic like feel with their translated sound FX . This version does both which gets annoying fast . For this version , they need to drop the English translations , leave only Japanese sound FX and make an index like they did for xxxHolic . That way I can use it as a reference if I absolutely cannot figure out the sound a character makes when they squish something . : /
3 . LEGENDARY SILVER CRYSTAL needs to stop having quotes around it . That is also bothersome . Plus , I didn't really like the translation legendary but I can overlook that since it ballparks what Maboroshi kinda means . It was the same with Fushigi and Mysterious . The word encompasses so much that any translation will not be 100% accurate . So it's okay but drop the quotations .
4 . The little star signs by Sailormoon need to be dropped . I think when a character is first introduced its fine , but need to be dropped in subsequent dialogue .
5 . I HATED the translation with the encounter with Mamoru . I knew this one was going to be tricky from the get-go but it seems both versions ( new and old ) did not have a satisfactory translation . I actually like the English anime translation of Meatball head since we do not have Dango in the US . It kept with food and what the hair looked like . But Bun-head was just plain awkward as the only bread traditionally eaten that appears like it is Bun rolls so they would have to go with that . And it just doesn't mesh well overall . The chinese also used that but their bread DOES in fact look like Usagi's hair . So this is just going to be a pain to see throughout the series . I also preferred the Pig-Tails not Cow-tails over Bump-head / Bun-head simply beacuse it entails more insult as the Japanese intended but the latter is closer to translation so whatever .
6 . While I did not at all mind Bunny , I think it's great that we have Usagi's name intact . Bunny to me was VERY close to the original translation and at the time , the manga was trying hard to keep up with the anime adapation . So they did a good job trying to bridge the gap in order for the manga references to make sense . Now that Sailormoon in Japanese has become more accessible and people are more aware of Japanese culture in general , it becomes redundant . That's why it's okay to just leave the original Japanese names . They work here . And we should have known they would work with Haruka and Michiru retaining their original names in the Tokyopop version ( they weren't given English names at the time it was published ) . Overall , each version did good with the names at the time .
7 . The revised books have an overall better material for the book to last . The older books when opened too far would have pages coming out of the binding . The English revised albeit better is still not on par with the revised Japanese versions . The Japanese versions have a MUCH better binding for smoother reading . The pages don't fall out and the material is softer and bends better so when you turn pages , its not a sharp / awkward movement that requires precision not to open it fully . Why they didn't use this for American versions is beyond me since it works the best of all publications of Sailormoon . For future installments , I HOPE they go back to the Japanese style . I find that one will really withstand the test of time . ( Although I take care of my books and have all versions in near mint condition ) .
8 . Pretty Guardian . . . this was something kept from the live-action series . They translated into this which I do not like at all . She is a guardian but soldier is much more accurate and entails so much more . You feel the hardships they will go through and understand what they do in essence . Guardian downplays it more but oh well . And this is not the English translator's fault . It's just the new marketing catchphrase the Japanese came up with . It sucks .
I'm sure I forgot some stuff but that's okay . Overall , this is a must-buy for Sailor Moon fans , especially those that were not able to buy the first version in the US . If you already own all voumes from the first go-around , there isn't really TOO much you are missing out on . But if you are like me and are curious about updates and want to support Sailor Moon , please go buy this . I'm hoping that this will give the green-light to redo the anime which needed much more touch-up then the manga did . Also , the artwork is beautiful , we get some color pages and will go good with any collection . Plus you can relive the experience you did as a child and share it with your children ( most of us are already of that age from that generation ) . On another note I am VERY curious how they will translate Usako in English . The first version did Buns which kinda made sense but since there really isn't anything to translate it to , they may have to leave it as if that was her name . It would have to join Sensei and just stay with a translator's note so that everyone understands in subsequent chapters . We'll see how it goes .
Anyway , stop reading this and go buy the book . Support our Sailor Soldiers !

I got my book yesterday and couldn't stop looking through the pages . . . I only read a couple pages but at least this book is bigger than the previous one .

080 I was simply ecstatic when I heard the news about Kodansha releasing the manga in it's ORIGINAL format ! Right to left , much bigger in comparison to Tokyopop's release followed by Pocket Mixx's , and it has the original character names . No longer will you have to push down the pages just to see what's crammed in the binding ( like the old manga , and any other manga where the graphics are too big for the page ) .
I haven't counted but it has about five chapters or so , where all of the inner senshi are revealed and then one about Tuxedo Mask . That's a lot more than the previous versions .
The art is simply beautiful . I truly appreciate Naoko's work .
Any die hard Sailor Moon fan should buy this manga ! Even if you've only seen the anime , I recommend on reading the manga to see how much more it has than the anime !
I only wish that they could release the manga on a fast schedule instead of every two months . But for great work , you have to be patient .

Like most of the customers who have reviewed this item , I too became acquainted with Sailor Moon at a young age ( via the English dub of the anime series ) . Unlike most of the customers who have reviewed this item , reading this re-release of the manga will be my first time experiencing the story of the Sailor Soldiers in full , as I was able to watch only a handful of the episodes - - just enough to become interested in the story and characters . And while I liked this volume well enough , found the characters charming ( particularly Usagi / Sailor Moon ) and the story intriguing for the most part , I couldn't help but notice a few flaws that hindered my enjoyment of the manga .
First , the transition of the art . I thoroughly enjoyed the art itself but often found myself having to go back and reread whole pages in order to understand why certain characters remained present and some disappeared , where certain characters were , how they had gotten there , etc .
As stated above , I found the story intriguing overall , but a few plot holes caught my eye . For example , why did Sailor Moon stop wearing her mask after the first few chapters ? And why did Luna look up Ami on the school computer if she did not yet know that Ami was Sailor Mercury ? A big hole that distracted me throughout entire scenes ( although I admit this may be due to the translation , or perhaps this particular plot point has not yet been revealed ) was the selection of the Soldiers . In some parts it seemed as though they were selected for their personality traits , and in others it seemed as though they were pre-selected by destiny .
Speaking of the translation , I'm not sure how the Japanese speak because I've never studied Japanese or the Japanese culture , but I found the random - chan s tacked onto nearly every spoken name to be both distracting and annoying . I understand that [ name / shorted name ] + chan is an informal way to address your friends in Japanese , but the number of times it occurs in this manga sound unnatural , especially since a lot of the characters have one - or two-syllable names to begin with . I might feel that way because I'm a native English speaker , though .
The last issue I had with this volume was the phonetic effects . I sounded out all of them and still could not figure out what sound they were trying to represent ( although I was able to guess most of them - - I think - - based on the context of the scene ) . The translators would have done better just to use genetic effects like BEEP ! or SMACK ! .
If I could give this volume 3 1 / 2 stars , I would , because three stars feels too low for it . But for the reasons I've just given , four stars feels too high .

089 I decided to give a little review of the manga and base it off of the original manga and the anime as far as I know it from the differences of the English dub and original Japanese version .
So where to begin . . . Well first off it was a very good read ( surprisingly ) I got it yesterday ( September 13th 2011 ) and finished it today ( September 14 , 2011 ) . It usually takes me a lot longer depending on my interest in it , so if I read it that fast it means it was really good . From what I've read this is published by the US branch of the company that published it back in 1992 . The manga is based off the Japanese 2004 re-issue and contains the new cover art , retouched interior art and dialogue along with extensive bonus material from Takeuchi .
Comparison to the original English manga release :
Unlike the original release the manga is read from right to left instead of left to right . This can be very confusing to those who do not know how to ( if this is their first manga experience ) or are a little rusty at it . Also the original Japanese names are retained for all the characters , and objects . Name examples : Serena is Usagi instead of the translation Bunny . Amy is Ami and Raye is Rei , etc . Object examples : In the original English release of the manga , the Imperium Silver Crystal was called the Silver Imperium Cyrstal in the English manga but in the re-issue it is called the Legendary Silver Cyrstal . Mainly I just read through it by using the names , attacks and transformations used in the English dub of the anime ( including calling the Legendary Silver Crystal the Imperium Silver Cyrstal ) .
Comparison to the anime : ( both English and Japanese versions ) :
Compared to the Japanese version of the show the manga and the anime are both way , way , way off ! We meet Ami and Rei a lot faster in the manga then we do in the anime ( the second act Ami is introduced , in the third act Rei is introduced and Lita ( sorry I'm using her English name cause I can't pronounce her Japanese name ) is introduced at the end of the fourth act . In the anime we don't meet Amy until episode 8 ( 5 in the English dub ) , Raye isn't met til episode 10 ( 7 in the English dub ) and Lita isn't met until the Episode 25 ( 21 in the English dub ) . Also and this is most important . They're not as graphic about nude scenes as they are in the anime . The manga doesn't show hardly as much as the anime which brings me to believe that Toei did that as their own sick perverted joke . Mainly all you see is lines along the edges that indicate where the breast are in the manga nothing forming them like seen in the anime like cleavage or lines under the breast to show how big they are , actually from what I've seen there's no nudity in it at all . Again , I think that was a perverted joke Toei put in the anime . Another difference is Jadeite is killed very early on in Act 3 of the manga but he isn't killed until episode 13 ( Episode 10 in the English dub ) and Nephrite is killed in the next act ( Act 4 ) while in the anime he doesn't die until 24 ( episode 20 in the English dub ) As far as the English dub goes the only similarity is the removal of the bodylines that was done to it . Other then that there is no similarities to the manga as we all know names , attacks , the Imperium Silver Cyrstal and transformation names had changes done to them . Other similarities include the introduction of Sailor V , the first act introduces her and the video game . Both the Japanese and English dub retain this in the first episode . Also Luna having the X band-aid over her crescent-moon is also in the manga as well as the anime though the only difference is that in the manga Luna explains that she was attacked by kids and they put it on her , where as in both versions of the anime we witness them doing it .
Well that's pretty much all of my review . If you like Sailor Moon then be sure to pick up a copy of this . If you're disappointed well sorry nothing I can do and if you're ecstatic good for you , lol ! But as far as a scale of 5 stars I'd have to give it 4.5 mainly cause I'm disappointed they would call this a re-issue and not retain the English names . It's not a real re-issue it's a translation of the Japanese manga . Other then that it's pretty much awesome ! Hope you enjoyed my review .

I am a huge Sailor Moon fan . I started watching the anime in 1995 and was more than eager to get my hands on the updated , more accurate version of the manga . The artwork is phenomenal . The actual plot is great and I love the Translations page and preview of the Japanese version at the end , which were not part of the English release previously .
However , I found myself rushing to finish the manga , not because I was enjoying it immensely , but because I couldn't stand the dialogue . The dialogue is unnatural , most of the honorifics are distracting , and the sound effects are of sounds I've never heard before . I especially hate the fact that Motoki is referred to as ' bro . ' It just doesn't fit the way people actually speak nor the personalities of the characters . I thought while reading , Maybe I feel this way because I read the original English release ? But I soon realized that that can't be it , because I have only ever read the last act of this installment in the previous release .
I understand an accurate translation was probably Kodansha's main concern in the re-release , but those who have read the Japanese version and the updated English version point out that the personalities of the characters and the tone of the manga are not correlating well between the two versions . Some changes need to be done if loyal fans are to continue purchasing the Sailor Moon manga series . The translation of the dialogue needs to be simplified and catered to each characters personalities ; for example , Usagi uses words and phrases that seem unchracteristic for a 14 year old , let alone a bubbly , overly friendly , down-to-earth 14 year old with terrible grades . Most , if not all , of the honorifics should be removed ( ie . Princess-SAMA ) and BRO should be replaced with Motoki . The sound effects need to either reflect more of the actual Japanese sound effects ( I am learning Japanese and was able to see that the hiragana and katakana used for the sound effects matched better than the English written sound effects ) or sound effects usually used in American comics .
The images and style of drawing are important to every comic / manga , but dialogue ( including sound effects ) is just as important , if not more so . It advances the story , explains images that could not be fully understood otherwise , and immerses readers in a world outside of their own . That is why I have given this installment such a low rating . I hope other fans will continue to vocalize their discontent with the translation . Perhaps Kodansha will realize these issues and correct them soon in the series .

096 I lived and breathed sailor moon since I was little . I had the dolls and and cards and pretty much memorized every single episode by heart . It is still , regardless of how awful this manga is , the most amazing anime ever and I will always get a flutter of nostalgic butterflies in my stomach at the mere mention of this series .
As an adult I saw the manga in my favorite store a week ago and it hit me . Why have I never read it ! ? I must own it !
I've never been more disappointed in my entire life .
The dialogue is horrible . Couldn't possibly be more simplistic . I barely got through 20 pages . It's like scratching a chalkboard with your own nails . The story moves so quickly its like I'm skipping pages .
The artwork is so inconsistent that some pages look put together last minute . Maybe I've been spoiled by CLAMP but dude one page Usagi has an oversized forehead , the next page its her chin that's taking up half the page , the next her body shape changed .
As a collector I'll keep it for the sake of having the Sailor Moon manga but I haven't been able to finish it . .

Well overall they did a good job with this edition . I own 4 versions of this volume . Original Jpn / Eng and revised Jpn / Eng so I have been examining all four . The new versions strike a win in some cases and a fail in others .
1 . They did a much better job translating it overall . A lot from the Japanese version is kept such as cultural references . What I didn't like is that they translated TOO much from the Japanese . They translated chan and san which is extremely cumbersome in English since it really holds no meaning . Yes , people nowadays understand what they mean but it doesn't mean you should put it . Did we not learn our lesson in Ai Yori Aoshi ? It just doesn't make sense and gets annoying . They need to drop this in future installments . Very few words are accepted into mainstream English language , like Sensei .
2 . The sound effects were a MAJOR distractoin . If they had just left the original Japanese text , I wouldn't have been so distracted . The original books had an American-comic like feel with their translated sound FX . This version does both which gets annoying fast . For this version , they need to drop the English translations , leave only Japanese sound FX and make an index like they did for xxxHolic . That way I can use it as a reference if I absolutely cannot figure out the sound a character makes when they squish something . : /
3 . LEGENDARY SILVER CRYSTAL needs to stop having quotes around it . That is also bothersome . Plus , I didn't really like the translation legendary but I can overlook that since it ballparks what Maboroshi kinda means . It was the same with Fushigi and Mysterious . The word encompasses so much that any translation will not be 100% accurate . So it's okay but drop the quotations .
4 . The little star signs by Sailormoon need to be dropped . I think when a character is first introduced its fine , but need to be dropped in subsequent dialogue .
5 . I HATED the translation with the encounter with Mamoru . I knew this one was going to be tricky from the get-go but it seems both versions ( new and old ) did not have a satisfactory translation . I actually like the English anime translation of Meatball head since we do not have Dango in the US . It kept with food and what the hair looked like . But Bun-head was just plain awkward as the only bread traditionally eaten that appears like it is Bun rolls so they would have to go with that . And it just doesn't mesh well overall . The chinese also used that but their bread DOES in fact look like Usagi's hair . So this is just going to be a pain to see throughout the series . I also preferred the Pig-Tails not Cow-tails over Bump-head / Bun-head simply beacuse it entails more insult as the Japanese intended but the latter is closer to translation so whatever .
6 . While I did not at all mind Bunny , I think it's great that we have Usagi's name intact . Bunny to me was VERY close to the original translation and at the time , the manga was trying hard to keep up with the anime adapation . So they did a good job trying to bridge the gap in order for the manga references to make sense . Now that Sailormoon in Japanese has become more accessible and people are more aware of Japanese culture in general , it becomes redundant . That's why it's okay to just leave the original Japanese names . They work here . And we should have known they would work with Haruka and Michiru retaining their original names in the Tokyopop version ( they weren't given English names at the time it was published ) . Overall , each version did good with the names at the time .
7 . The revised books have an overall better material for the book to last . The older books when opened too far would have pages coming out of the binding . The English revised albeit better is still not on par with the revised Japanese versions . The Japanese versions have a MUCH better binding for smoother reading . The pages don't fall out and the material is softer and bends better so when you turn pages , its not a sharp / awkward movement that requires precision not to open it fully . Why they didn't use this for American versions is beyond me since it works the best of all publications of Sailormoon . For future installments , I HOPE they go back to the Japanese style . I find that one will really withstand the test of time . ( Although I take care of my books and have all versions in near mint condition ) .
8 . Pretty Guardian . . . this was something kept from the live-action series . They translated into this which I do not like at all . She is a guardian but soldier is much more accurate and entails so much more . You feel the hardships they will go through and understand what they do in essence . Guardian downplays it more but oh well . And this is not the English translator's fault . It's just the new marketing catchphrase the Japanese came up with . It sucks .
I'm sure I forgot some stuff but that's okay . Overall , this is a must-buy for Sailor Moon fans , especially those that were not able to buy the first version in the US . If you already own all voumes from the first go-around , there isn't really TOO much you are missing out on . But if you are like me and are curious about updates and want to support Sailor Moon , please go buy this . I'm hoping that this will give the green-light to redo the anime which needed much more touch-up then the manga did . Also , the artwork is beautiful , we get some color pages and will go good with any collection . Plus you can relive the experience you did as a child and share it with your children ( most of us are already of that age from that generation ) . On another note I am VERY curious how they will translate Usako in English . The first version did Buns which kinda made sense but since there really isn't anything to translate it to , they may have to leave it as if that was her name . It would have to join Sensei and just stay with a translator's note so that everyone understands in subsequent chapters . We'll see how it goes .
Anyway , stop reading this and go buy the book . Support our Sailor Soldiers !

I had been anticipating this release of a long time . I love the artwork and the fact it's finally in the states . I was sad to see SO many typos and awkward wording in the English translation ! I am a HUGE Sailor Moon and Sailor V fan but I was expecting so much better . Why so many typos ? Did they not proof read or something . The sound effects are strange and some of the wording like calling someone Bro and stuff like that just seems strange . Love that they tried to keep some of the true Japanese in it but they kept it in awkward places . Please Kodansha do better next time . Us fans deserve a PERFECT release . I was simply ecstatic when I heard the news about Kodansha releasing the manga in it's ORIGINAL format ! Right to left , much bigger in comparison to Tokyopop's release followed by Pocket Mixx's , and it has the original character names . No longer will you have to push down the pages just to see what's crammed in the binding ( like the old manga , and any other manga where the graphics are too big for the page ) .
I haven't counted but it has about five chapters or so , where all of the inner senshi are revealed and then one about Tuxedo Mask . That's a lot more than the previous versions .
The art is simply beautiful . I truly appreciate Naoko's work .
Any die hard Sailor Moon fan should buy this manga ! Even if you've only seen the anime , I recommend on reading the manga to see how much more it has than the anime !
I only wish that they could release the manga on a fast schedule instead of every two months . But for great work , you have to be patient .

This is the most highly anticipated manga release in a very long time , and let me tell you . It is worth ALL the hype . I have been a devout Sailor Moon fan since I was a little girl , so I was estatic when I heard they were FINALLY reprinting the manga . The artwork is beautiful . And the story is fantastic . Fans of the anime , you will DIE when you read this manga . The manga puts the anime to shame . Each Sailor Senshi has their own unique look and characteristics . The storyline is heartfelt , gutwrenching , comical , and suspensful all at the same time . The cover art is the same as the Japanese 2004 release , and is beautiful . I love the new broach and the little unique touches to each senshi's uniform . I also ADORE the new logo . Its so feminine and pretty . In my opinion , a much better fit than the original . The story is never lagging . It constantly holds your interest.The translation is pure and smooth . It sounds natural and is teamed up with excellent translation notes . This revival will reignite the flame within old fans and hopefully bring fourth new fans as well . Manga fan or not , this book does nothing short of impress .
