Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions

  • 067   Oh man were do i begin , I originally got this game a 10 years ago , on christmas i was 12 i started playing and thought wtf this is lame , so it sat on a shelf for 6 mo , i eventually talked to a friend about the game who was obsessed with it and told me about the JP system and skills ( no wonder i wasnt getting anywere. So i started up a new game and Was instantly hooked i thought i was the bomb once i started dual weilding eventuall i got to a point i couldnt beat , so i forgot about the game , 3 years later i picked up the game off ebay , and finally beat it . Needless to say it was amazing. So about 6 - 7 years later i finaly get myself a PSP since i was deploying to afghanistan and i was picking out a few games for myself when ironicly i came across this game , Its just like the PS version with afew extras , its also a little easier i noticed but all in all its a great game worth playing or replaying , Its by far my favorite RTS RPG's
    • 024   This game is very well known , there isn't a need to go into all the great aspects of this game . Really happy that it's released 1 week ahead of schedule . But if this early release caused this technical glitch , rather waited . There is a very noticeable slowdown anytime there is animation in the battles . Such as perfoming magic , using a skill , or even using an item . This is really bothersome , being that a PSP is as powerful as a PS2 , this should not have happened . Other than this , the game is perfect , but seriously , this slowdown is not bearable . Now have to buy the new PSP2000 that supposedly have more memory to reduces load time and slowdown to play this . Maybe it's intentional ?
    • 037   This was a fantastic PSP game but I couldn't honestly reccommend it for everyone . There are certain jobs that you have to use early in the game or you'll die almost every time , and they don't make sense . The monk is by far one of the best classes for the first several hours of the game , but how do fists outhit a sword to the face ? But anyway , once you get into the rythym of the game , it's a lot of fun , and I couldn't put it down until after 30 hours into it , and that was only because my PSP took a crap . As soon as I get it replaced , I intend to pick up right where I left off with this game , and I would suggest any hardcore RPG fans out there to pick this up too . It's well worth it's $20 price tag , and despite the challenge , it's a great buy .

  • 102   What a GREAT remake for the PSP . You are a final fantasy saga fan or a strategy / tactical gamer ? you MUST play this game . The PSOne version was good , but with the new cinematics and voice acting the game rocks even more than ever . You will never get tired of playing over and over again !
    • 054   I love this game , I played the original avidly - and this game just enhances and adds on to my previous experiences : D Definitely buy this product if you're a PSP owner .
    • 161   This game is pretty cool . Although you may not be stunned by the graphics , the storyline and content will make you addicted . This game is the best one in all of PSP gaming history so far . . .

  • 135   I've been playing this game for years . Yes the graphics are a little old , but it just doesn't matter . I remember when I first started playing this game and how me and my brother would get into arguments on whose army was stronger ! Now you can find out with this version of tactics . I only wish this version of tactics were available on the PS3 with online play !
    • 112   I've never played the PS1 version , but currently I'm playing this game more than any of my other PSP titles .

  • 142   This is an absolutely incredible game ! ! If you are a little older , you can enjoy it . . . once you understand it that is . . . And there's the catch . . . it can be a little confusing at first . . . thankfully . . . they provide a HUGE tutorial section for you to use . . . . and that helps A LOT ! Graphically , this is truly impressive . . . they have fully voice acted cut-scenes , and the entire game looks amazing ! It was good back in the first one . . . and it's good now ! You won't be let down if you buy this game !
    • 097   A game you can play for the rest of your life . A great addiction to the handheld world , giving one the dream of fighting anothers team .

  • Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) ( While pasted from GameFAQs , I did write the original review there . ) GRAPHICS : The graphics are sprites , but they're good ones at that . Probably some of the best I've seen . Although they are just a bunch of pixels , the color scheme is fantastic and the animation is very smooth . The characters also look rather stocky , but because the gameplay is tile-based , this actually makes the game more visually satisfying . The backgrounds look great , although , being tile-based , certain features like cliffs look somewhat cube-like . The interface is simple and easy to navigate , but doesn't look poorly done . There are also cel-shaded , fully animated , voiced cut scenes throughout the game that have incredible graphics . The characters look hand-drawn and the animation has a very natural , warm look to it . The artwork is beautiful . SOUND : The voice acting , though minimalist , is done well . The sound effects get somewhat repetitive ( then again , I've clocked nearly 600 hours on this game ) but do their job nicely . The music , however . . . Brilliant . Some are mysterious , some add to the devious nature of a scene , some are somber , some are scary , and some are action-packed . Most contain musical motifs to give them somewhat of a trademark , but they sound very different and supplement the mood perfectly ! The best music in a video game I've ever heard ! STORY : Best storyline I've ever seen in a video game ever . This blows Final Fantasy VII's story out of the water . The game takes place in Ivalice , in a time resembling the middle ages . The protagonist is Ramza Beoulve , who had a highborn father and a lowborn mother . Ramza has to cope with scorn from both his ` pureblood ' half-brother and superiors who think his mother stained his blood , and the lowborn underdogs known as the Corpse Brigade , who see him , having a highborn father , as being a snobbish monstrosity . As a cadet in the Order of the Northern Sky , he fights both the Corpse Brigade despite a growing doubt that their ideals are pure of heart , and the Order of the Southern Sky although there seems to be no apparent reason . Poor Ramza is caught in the middle of the fray , trying to do the right thing as others around him despise him and care only for the honor of their names . There are still debates about whether or not certain characters were ` good guys ' or ` bad guys ' , so don't expect cardboard cutouts for your allies and enemies . GAMEPLAY : The gameplay is perhaps as thought-provoking as the storyline . It's somewhat like chess , although turn order is dependent on the Speed stat of units . After every turn , players , continuously gain CT equal to their Speed . When someone's speed reaches 100 , this CT counter stops , and that unit gets a turn . On a turn , a unit can wait ( makes a unit take no action but resets their CT at 40 ) , move ( go to a different tile , with a movement range limited depending on the unit's jump and move stats ) , or act ( attack , use recovery items , cast spells , etc ) . Only moving or only acting resets your CT to 20 after your turn , but doing both resets it to 0 , so it's best to do only as much as you have to in order to neutralize your enemy with optimal efficiency . When you act , whatever you're affecting ( usually a stat or status of a unit ) has a range and area of effect . For instance , if you're using a sword you can only hit someone up to 3 tiles lower than you or 2 tiles higher than you , and they have to be at an adjacent tile . The area of affect is only the tile you target . However , if you have a spell such as Fire , your range is as far as 4 tiles away from where you're standing with no limit on how high or low an enemy can be , and the area of effect is both the tile you're targeting and the four tiles adjacent to it ( though there are limitations based off of the height difference in the area of effect ) . Spells also take a certain amount of time to cast , meaning that if you target a tile , enemies can move out of the way of it if they get a turn soon enough , and if you target a unit , that unit can move next to one of yours so that both they and your unit take damage from the blast . Before you confirm an attack , a screen shows you how much damage ( or healing ) should occur as a result of your action , as well as a percentage chance of hitting or missing . Throw in bows and arrows , guns , and special class abilities with no charge time , and you've got a very deep game ! In fact there are about 20 classes in total that stem from only two , so you'll continuously unlock new abilities as you rank up ! Focusing on classes with certain areas of expertise will generally unlock jobs with more honed abilities ( Squire > Knight > Monk , or Archer > Thief > Ninja , or Black Mage > Time Mage > Summoner ) , although some jobs have several prerequisites . But it doesn't end there ! Some weapons and abilities inflict status ailments ! Some make your characters slower , some make them less accurate , and the worst of them leave your units out of control ! Examples of these include units who have been turned to stone , or units that have confuse or berserk status and act on their own . So just keeping your allies ' health up isn't all you need to do to ensure survival ; sometimes you need to give sleeping units a good whack to wake them up , even if they take damage from it . There are tons of risks you'll have to take , and plenty of dirty tricks you'll have to formulate to get the drop on your opponent . Even things such as weather conditions will impact the flow of the battle ; being hit with Thundaga when it's raining is probably a bad idea . If that still wasn't enough to make this a deep game , you'll also have to choose what kinds of weapons to equip your units with . Will you go with a strong close-range weapon or a weaker long-ranged weapon ? Will you go for a helm that protects you from Sleep and Doom , or one that boosts your health more ? And the biggest decisions come when you have to equip your misc . item . Some boost your movement speed , while others may improve your speed , while others still may increase physical damage . So how do you travel between different areas to get to these battles ? You have a giant map of Ivalice with dots all over it . Green dots are battlefields with a chance of a random battle , red dots are where you go to advance the plotline , and blue dots are towns where you can go to a tavern for information , an outfitter for equipment , or the warrior's guild for more recruits . It's a simple system but it works great ! All of this sounds rather complicated though , right ? Not to worry ! Use the select button to spawn a cursor , then roll it over anything you don't understand and hit the X button . The game gives you a full rundown on what you selected and what it's for . There are really only four complaints I have about the gameplay . The first is that if enemies are fast enough or if they just have the same speed , a bunch of enemies get turns and you're left waiting for a very long time before you get a turn . Sometimes your PSP's screen even goes dark as you wait ! Not enough participation is required on the player's part . You can't press a button when an icon appears to improve your chances of dodging an attack , nor is anything about this game real-time . Second , later in the game enemies are as high level as you , if not more , but they don't have enough abilities to compete with you , making the game much easier as it progresses instead of harder . Third , as you go through the game , the charge times of spells become too much of a hassle , as no stats make charge time shorter , and you'll rely on physical attacks or class abilities more and more , which makes a lot of the older abilities pretty much useless . Fourth , there are many items you can miss on accident and not be able to come back and get later ! If you want to play this game casually but also enjoy everything in it , you're out of luck ! You have to follow a walkthrough to make sure you don't miss out on anything that won't come back to bite you in the butt later . Of course , these are gimmicks I've noticed after 600 hours of play ; if I complain about there being no real-time sequences or minigames , it's because I've played this game too long and I expected it to have everything , which no game can really do . Oh , one last thing before I move onto replay value . . . There's multiplayer for Ad-Hoc and it's a blast ! You can play Melee against another player , or you can do a Rendez-Vous mission and cooperate for victory ! Both are a blast and some missions are tough even for the most tested players ! And in Melee , you can tap the X button right as your hit connects to make a critical hit ! Unfortunately , Melee is the only time you'll see these real-time features in action . REPLAY VALUE : A gimmick in this game allows the player to level down and level up to increase stats , meaning that once you have a roster of over 20 characters , you can do this with all of them until their stats are maxed , teach all of them every ability from every class , and max out your inventory with 354 of every item in the game . 600 hours hasn't allowed me to get even close to this mark , so if you want a ` perfect ' save file , you could play this game for thousands of hours . FINAL RECOMMENDATION : Cozy graphics , outstanding , emotionally-charged music , thought-provoking plot twists and brain-bending gameplay make Final Fantasy Tactics the best PSP game I've ever owned . If this review hasn't been informative enough , try watching some online videos that show the gameplay .
    • 001   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Final Fantasy Tactics was without a doubt one of the greatest Playstation games out there . Starting off as a cult classic it became a big success when it was released later as a Greatest Hits package . Ten years later and Final Fantasy Tactics is still one of the best Final Fantasy games ever made . Of all the Final Fantasy games , Tactics has arguably the best story out there . It's full of emotion , political intrigue , fantastic characters and it's very deep . If this is your first trump through Final Fantasy Tactics , prepare to be dazzled . It's still one of the most absorbing in the series . To the point where you'll be sad to leave when the whole thing is over . The game is also backed up by a fantastic new translation that out does the original and makes the world of Ivalice come alive . The translation alone may actually warrant Final Fantasy Tactics The War of the Lions worth a buy even for those who played through the original game . It's the gameplay that makes Final Fantasy Tactics a treat , though . Thanks to the job system , customization is nearly endless . Before each battle you can assign jobs to your characters . Each job has specific traits about them and can greatly affect how you perform in battle . Mages have devastating magic abilities while Knights are strong physical attackers . They also bring their own unique abilities to the table . Because there are so many job classes to choose from , there's a lot of experimentation you can do . As you master abilities you'll also be able to mix and match . You could have a Squire casting white magic , for example provided you've learned some of the white magic abilities . As battles progress you gain experience . You pretty much gain experience after each and every turn , which is nice . Not only do you gain experience but you also gain job points to help you master the abilities in your job class . It's pretty simple stuff and you'll be surprised at just how fast you can learn abilities here . Final Fantasy Tactics provides its own challenges , though . Not all your enemies are taken down easily , and if you don't take advantage of the opportunities to improve your characters abilities you'll be overwhelmed before you know it . When they say Final Fantasy Tactics , they're not kidding . Sometimes little simple mishaps in your strategy can cost you a battle . Not only that , but even doing things such as casting spells you must be careful with because if any of your characters are in range , they'll be struck by that spell . You also have to be quick about reviving characters otherwise you lose them forever . If your first plunge into Final Fantasy Tactics was with the GBA version released in 2003 you'll be in for a rude awakening . There is also a multiplayer thrown in there . You can work with a friend or battle friends . First there are melee battles where you can battle up against friends and then there's the Rendezvous Battles where you'll team up with a friend . These let you get some rare and hard to find items that are otherwise unable to be obtained . While Final Fantasy Tactics is a great game , it certainly doesn't do as much in the technical department as it does in the gameplay . The game itself doesn't really look any different from the game released ten years ago . There's little , if any , enhancement to the graphics at all . For the pleasure of story , however , there are some pretty cool cutscenes thrown in that are incredible looking . These cutscenes are truly artistic and in depth . While those cutscenes are beautiful , it's a shame Square-Enix did little to update the games other visuals . Despite the cool cutscenes , though , there are some slow down issues in battle . Music wise , though , Final Fantasy Tactics easily has some of the best music in the series . It's still memorable to hear and can still give many video game soundtracks a run for their money . While the voice acting isn't as good as other video games , they add a lot of depth to the cutscenes . Surprisingly , there are quite a few differences outside of the translation to Final Fantasy Tactics The War of the Lions . New characters such as Balthier appear . There are new missions exclusive to the PSP version as well as the multiplayer aspect of the game . While there aren't a huge assortment of new items and abilities , you'll find War of the Lions takes a much longer time to master than the original . Final Fantasy Tactics : War of the Lions is a great re-release of a great classic . While it's still a good game a bit more could've been done to update it . The technical issues will probably annoy some fans , but for the most part you're getting a good game . Even if you have the original , this one is worth a look . Pros : + A fantastic storyline + Beautiful soundtrack + New job classes + Good cutscenes + Addictive gameplay + Tons of customization + The New Translation is far better than the original , making even the experience of the story completely different for those who went through before . This alone makes the game worth a purchase for those who already went through it and enjoyed it once before Cons : - Will be difficult for newcomers - Some technical issues with the graphics and sound - Not much of a graphical update at all , it looks just like the original Playstation version

    • 003   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Final Fantasy Tactics has long been my favorite videogame EVER . Nothing , I feel , has ever matched the original PS1 version of the game . Unfortunately , that still statement still stands . I've always wanted a portable version of Final Fantasy Tactics , and when I heard it was coming to PSP I went and bought a PSP JUST FOR THIS GAME . I figured that with the fixed translation , new movies , and new content it would be pretty much the only game I would need for awhile . Well , after sitting down and playing for hours , here is what I have to say : Pros : - The new animations are beautiful ! And the voice acting is very well-done . So , big plus there . - The new content is fun , and helpful ( for understanding the plot ) - Multiplayer mode looks like it might be fun - unfortunately no one I know ( and no one in the entire area as far as I know ) has a PSP and Final Fantasy Tactics . . . so I can't play it . - The load time is almost nonexistent . - Rewritten and well-translated dialogue ! Yay ! The translation is not perfect , I've noticed several grammatical and spelling errors in the dialogue , but its a big improvement from the last translation . I'm bit annoyed that its not perfect , though . Last time I could chalk it up to the horrible translation , but this time I really did expect perfection . Oh well . The big plus is that the plot is much easier to understand now . Cons : - Sound : It sounds like several sound effects were cut . I got especially annoyed at the first fight , when some of the dark knight's sword skill sound effects were cut . I don't know why this is . If you've never played the game you probably won't notice / care ( though you might wonder at the strange silence for parts of moves . . . ) . If you have played the game you'll be annoyed . - Multiplayer : If you don't have anyone to play with , there is no way to get any of that extra content . I don't know why they couldn't have made the multiplayer missions an option to do all alone - sure they'd be hard , but still . . . Very annoying that an entire section of the game is locked to you if you have no one to play with . Of course , you can disregard this if you actually have a friend , with the game , who is willing to spend time doing the multiplayer content with you . - Graphics : The PS1 version has absolutely beautiful graphics ; not a single pixel on the screen was was wasted . The grahics are still good in the PSP version , but in stretching out the game to 16x9 for the screen , everything looks somewhat . . . fuzzy . This was actually a big letdown for me , because the original graphics on the PS1 still look great . It just didn't make the transition smoothly . But , this is a minor issue . If you haven't seen the original , you'll think this is a pretty beautiful game . - Dialogue : Again , some grammar and spelling mistakes . Nothing big , but I really wish they'd been fixed . - ANIMATION SLOW DOWNS . This was big . For almost EVERY special attack in the game , especially more elaborate ones , there is noticeable disconnect between the sound and the animation . The problem is that the video lags so far behind the sound , sometimes the sound will finish playing almost before the animation has started . . . this also considerably slows down battles , as the framerate drops so much . The PSP has powerful hardware in it , I have no idea why there is this problem . Especially because emulated versions don't have this issue . I thought that I would get used to it , but it just got more and more annoying , especially as I got stronger and stronger magic . This is the primary reason I gave the game 3 stars . It is not only incredibly annoying , it also considerably slows the gameplay down . UGH . Conclusion : If you've never played the game , do yourself a favor and go try it out . If the lag problem isn't too annoying for you you're in for an amazing game . The plot is sophisticated , and the gameplay is deep . Few games can really compare in those two aspects . And , if you're a big fan of the game , you owe it to yourself to buy it . The new content and new movies are great , and you can't get those on an emulator . That said . . . the technical issues introduced in the translation from PS to PSP really knock this game down . . . especially the graphics lag . I don't know what Square was thinking releasing the game before they had the problem fixed ( I really don't understand why it would even be a problem , the PSP hardware is supposedly more powerful than the PS1 hardware . . . ) . I really wish I could give this game 5 stars , I really do . In my opinion , the graphics issues alone knocks it down a star , and the combination of everything else knocks another star off . I gave it 4 stars for fun because only the graphics issue really affects how fun the game is to play . Its still a great game , and if the graphics issue was gone I'd say it was a must buy . As is . . . : ( * edit * Its been a few months now , and I've progressed quite a bit in the game . I have well over 100 hours of playtime ( no idea how many , exactly , the playtime clock maxed out long ago ) and have played through every class and seen almost every ability in the game . Some additional thoughts : * No multiplayer is still a bummer - I want some of those items , but there is no way for me to get them . . . * In my opinion ( and feel free to disagree ) graphics slowdown is still an issue . I purposely avoid white magic and use items instead , for example , to avoid some of the bigger offenders and speed up battle . If you read the comments for this review you'll see people who agree and disagree with my assessment . * I'm continually impressed by the cutscenes , voice acting , and redone script . * I still feel that the game isn't as crisp as the original PS version . All of this said , this is still one of my favorite games out there ( as evidenced by the fact that I still play it ) . . . but I do stand by my rating . This game is , in my opinion , hampered by technical problems - which is sad . But . . . it is a lot of fun !

    • 005   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This review was written by my son , James Shea A remake of the hit game for the PS1 , Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions updates many of the little pieces of the original game in addition to carrying the game over to the Playstation Portable platform . It has been 10 years since the original's release ; now the update brings it to a new generation . As a refresher for those unfamiliar with the original game , Final Fantasy Tactics is a turn-based tactical game using many of the abilities and classes made familiar in the Final Fantasy series of games . The story takes place in the kingdom of Ivalice , where civil war has erupted following a great war against foreign enemies and the death of the old king . The main character , Ramza , must navigate these mazes of treachery and deceit to discover the true secret of the ancient prophecies that govern the kingdom . The English translation to the original was notoriously bad , with such lines as I got a good feeling ! and Bracelet used instead of Breath ( as in , a Dragon's breath ) . The main thing done by the remake was the rewriting / retranslating of almost the entire script to be much more period-appropriate . For the most part this is a good thing , matching the epic , elegant scale of the story , though certain fan-favorite lines were lost ( Don't blame us ! Blame yourself or God ! and Surrender , or die in obscurity ! being two of those ) . Many names were also changed ; besides the re-familiarization of characters ( for fans who got used to the old names ) , the only other problem is the abundance of th sounds to replace s sounds ( Algus becomes Argath , like how Aeris from Final Fantasy 7 became Aerith in later games ) . In certain scenes , illustrated cinematics were used to replace the game-engine cutscenes or CG cutscenes used in the old versions . These cinematics have a distinct art style and coloring scheme and are very well done . These scenes also have voice acting , which is done with English accents similar to much of Final Fantasy XII . Several new scenes are also inserted to either add backstory to the game or to establish a new character . On that note , two new characters from other Final Fantasy games are recruitable through the story ( much like Cloud from FF7 was and still is ) : Balthier from FFXII and Luso from the upcoming FFT Advance 2 . Two new classes are also obtainable for regular ( IE non-unique ) characters . Onion Knight is gained by gaining levels in the two basic classes ( chemist and squire ) while , on the other end , Dark Knight is gained by gaining a high level of classes in many specialized classes . The War of the Lions also adds a multiplayer mode , accessible through ad-hoc wireless ( the PSPs must be within range of each other ; no online mode is available ) . Through this , two players can either fight head-to-head or work cooperatively on unique missions . Characters do not die permanently in this mode , but there are treasures that can be gained from it , including some unique equipment . While it isn't as developed as it could be , its addition is certainly welcomed . Graphically , the game is the same . While the older sprites might seem dated , the smaller screen means that they seem more artistic than pixelated . The only troubling spot is major slowdown when spells are cast or abilities are used ; this problem is recurring and noticeable , but such is only to be expected with the transition between systems . Final Fantasy Tactics is still acclaimed as one of the best games of all time . With this remake , there were a lot of worries that the original formula would be watered down . Fortunately , this is definitely not the case ; the additions are almost entirely good , and make for a much more serious , solid experience . This game has done a great service in many ways to this classic game , despite occasional troubles . Rating : 9 / 10 .

    • 007   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Final Fantasy Tactics for the original PlayStation was one of my favorite games of all time , so I was looking forward to playing this game . Only being two hours into the game , I have not reached any of the new content , and I have not tried the multiplayer yet , so I cannot comment on those aspects of the game . The reanimated cut scenes are gorgeous . However , not all cutscenes were animated , and only being in chapter one , I've only seen one , which is when Ovelia is abducted by Delita . The other scenes so far have been with the in-game sprites . The voice acting is a nice touch to the animated scenes . The new translations give the speech in the game a similar feel to FFXII , which works considering the setting . Gameplay works exactly as it did in the original , which is part of the reason I love the game . If you are not into grinding levels , this game won't be for you . On tip though , the glitch in the original that allows for quick mastering of certain job classes is gone . Looks like he have to be honest men and women from now on . No big deal though . The two big issues I have with the game are technical in nature . The game expierences slow down any time there is a special effect of sorts curing battles . This occurs during spell animations , mainly , but I've experienced it even using things like Throw Stone and items , and even during monster attacks . The sound effects during the battles and the cut scenes that use sprites leave a lot to be desired as well . The sound of wind blowing is particularly horrific . One more thing to note is just that you may have to get used to new names of abilities . It's nothing big , but every one in a while I check to make sure that it's the same ability it used to be . No big deal . The game still looks great . Some may find it a little dated , but I think because it's on the PSP , it's not that big of a deal . The music is still excellent , although it doesn't sound re-mixed or re-arranged to me , which would have been a nice touch Overall , it's a good game that improves on the original , but I would have been willing to wait longer to have some of the technical issues ironed out .

    • 009   Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions is a remake of the original Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1 . The original was perhaps the most popular turn-based tactical RPG ever made , and this newest version remains true to the original . Not much , in terms of plot , has changed in the remake . The new translation is far better than the often laughable Engrish of the original , and some names have been changed to make the game fit better into the more fleshed out Ivalice of Final Fantasy XII . This doesn't change the story , but makes it easier to understand and far more enjoyable to witness . Graphically , the game is a bit of a mixed bag . The original PS1 graphics remain , and they haven't aged very well . Characters and monsters are depicted by the now familiar Square-Enix superdeformed sprites . The maps are pseudo - 3D . They can be rotated so the player can see around obstacles , but they're not exactly stunning to behold . On the flipside , the new cutscenes are absolutely gorgeous . They're fully animated , and very fluid , but retain an almost parchment-like quality to them . The style mimics the official art very closely , and helps to bridge the gap between the art and the sprites . The audio , again , is a mixed bag . Some of the music is beautiful , but there are a few annoying tunes thrown in , which quickly becomes a problem as the track repeats itself for the nth time while you're grinding for experience and job points . The sound effects are pretty standard . The voice acting , on the other hand , is superb . It's a shame that its limited to just the cutscenes . The gameplay is familiar to those experienced with the genre . Battles are fought on a square map . Obstacles - buildings , trees , lava . . . it all depends on where the battle is taking place - and monsters litter these battlegrounds . You control a squad of up to 5 characters . Each combatant - both the characters you control and the enemy NPCs - gets a turn , which allows them to move and / or perform an action . Most battles simply consist of defeating all enemies on the map or one particular enemy without getting the main character killed in the process . The tactical side of the game largely comes from which jobs your characters have mastered . Jobs are essentially character classes . You have the standards : warrior , healer , wizard , etc . There are other , more esoteric jobs , like mathematician and dancer . Every defeated enemy gives that character job points , which allows you to purchase an ability from a job , which grants that character permanent access to that ability . So , you can have a warrior capable of casting offensive magic if you purchase the right abilities . Access to jobs is predicated on which jobs that character already has access to , and what levels they have obtained with those jobs . The more useful or powerful the job you want to give your character , the more levels in pre-existing jobs they need . So , expect lots of grinding for both experience and job points , especially early on in the game . The last aspect of the gameplay I must mention is the steep learning curve . This game is not new player friendly . You'll die A LOT in this game , especially in the early stages . What's worse is that you'll die from creatures that are typically cannon fodder in other Square-Enix games . Trust me when I say that you'll learn to fear Chocobos . The game becomes much easier if you grind for abilities early on , but the beginning portion is hellish , especially during a first playthrough . All in all , The War of the Lions is a great remake . It's difficult , and parts of it haven't aged well , but it's definitely more than the sum of its parts . This version , given its portability and well-written ( properly translated ? ) story , is perfect for those who missed it the first time .

    • 016   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I'm not usually a strategy RPG player ( or an FF player at that ) , but this game has got me hooked . I bought it last week and I've already sunk 30 hours into it . The gameplay is amazingly complex , and completely revitalizes the 1997 FFT game . The cutscenes are wonderful also . Definitely grab it if you're interested . People hype up Jeane d'Arc and Disagea , but this game is where it's at .

    • 018   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Coincidentally , I had just dug up my old PS version of FFT to replay , when I discovered that it was going to be re-released on PSP . This was my first tactics game , which led me to try others , but FFT by far surpassed them all . So I blew the dust off my PSP . Yes , the PSP version is the same game ( shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone : read the title ) , but the additional scenes and updated translation are well worth it . The plot and even particular conversations make more sense , and the Renaissance-like dialogue really enhances the aesthetics . I recall putting in 100 + hours ( the clock only went up to 99 ) on the original , and I expect I'll be doing it again .

    • 020   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This game is without a doubt the best game on the PSP . I was a huge fan of the original Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSP and this new version is able to improve on almost every thing that was in the original . Even though most all of the script was changed from the original , it is still very , very well done . Granted , this may mean we lose classic quotes from the original such as Blame yourself , or blame God . but overall , that's fine . The script is much more refined and all of the translation issues have been fixed . The voice cast is very well done , starring Phil LaMarr as Ramza . The voices picked for the characters were exactly what I had pictured their voices to be . The only minor thing wrong with the game is the slowdown experienced when characters and NPCs perform special attacks . While this may seem very obvious at first , after playing the game for 15 hours , the slowdown doesn't bother me at all . It is an issue that was big on the Japanese release and was supposed to be fixed for the American release , but sadly wasn't . Yes , it is an issue , but a very tiny issue that the user will become accustomed to after playing the game for a while . It isn't enough of an issue to warrant lowering the score of the game . With the addition of new hidden characters , new missions , animated cutscenes , fixed script , and everything else new , this is a must buy game for the PSP . I've beaten the original version 5 or 6 times , at around 80 hours each time . I anticipate this version to be the same way . Highly addictive and well-written storyline and the replayability factor are top notch . Kudos to Square-Enix !

    • 025   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I want to start by saying that I don't mean to rate this game 5 stars out of sheer fandom , but simply that in the past 20 years of RPGs this is absolutely a standout classic . It has one of the best storylines , interesting ( and sure-to-be-your-new-favorite ) characters , and a simple sort of charm to its graphics - - though dated , they are unique and stand the test of time in their own way . Furthermore , once the game gets going and the really cool characters start joining you , you will be anticipating each new battle just for the chance to get to use them . What I will say though , is much of this game has been re-translated for the War of the Lions PSP release . Personally , I prefer the older translations in every single case ( except some of the super bosses , which were renamed to correlate to the espers in FF12 which is cool ) . Some classic characters that I know and love now sport almost an entirely different name , and the dialogue is much more verbose and Shakespearean-style wordy . But the trade-off is you get to see this story with several in-game cinematics , which suit it very nicely , in addition to a few new secret characters and jobs . My final verdict would be to say , if you have never played Final Fantasy Tactics before then buy the original as a download on PSN for $10 . If you've already played and beaten it many times over as a kid , this version is a nice way to relive the game and a perfect excuse to replay it . Despite my gripes , I enjoyed every minute of this .

    • 027   Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I first picked up this game for the Playstation 1 . I didn't like it at first , because of the difficulty of the game . Don't expect this game to be your run-of-the-mill Final Fantasy . Not by a long shot . Many clones of this game have cropped up , and Final Fantasy Tactics certainly is a clone ( in it's own right ) ; because it clones many of the earlier games ( Final Fantasy 3 and 5 respectively ) . The most famous of these is Vandal Hearts . Atlus game company came out with some worthy successors , but this game remains the best . Now , don't get me wrong , this game is very good . The original story still holds up in many repects . Gameplay : The gameplay is still there from the original . You move , you attack , you try not to get killed . And believe me , you will lose characters along the way . I lost one character in the second battle , because I thought I had the dude , and my guy had less HP . You still have the base classes , and many classes have been renamed from the PSX version . The Job system has been re-vamped , and you will find that many of the original abilities have been changed or made more expensive . Don't expect to sit down and finish this game in 20 hours . This will take you a while . Story : Along with this , the original scenes in the PSX version ( which were good , even by PSX standards and sprite animation ) have been either updated with dialogue , or re-done in cell-shaded CGI animated , full-voice acted scenes . And the scenes are terrific . The opening CGI animation is re-done as well , replaced with Delita going along with the 5 characters ( who create the diversionary battle that you fight the first time ) . The second animation ( showing the kidnapping of Ovelia ) , is dynamite . You really get to see Delita's emotional - SPOILERS - ties to the princess begin to form . You also get to see Ramza's ties to Delita , and his torn duty to protect the princess and find out if Delita is really there . - END SPOILERS - The story is one of the highlights , and if you haven't played either Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or Final Fantasy XII , this game will introduce you to the world of Ivalice in a huge way . Political intrigue , betrayal and romance just scratches the surface . There is a brand new translation , written much the same way as Final Fantasy XII was written . Old style english with many new phrases and old phrases stuck in for good measure . Overall : This game just rocks . From the music to the plot ; character development , job classes , added features ( including Balthier from FF12 , Dark knight classes and Cloud from FF7 ) this game just rocks . Get it , and you won't be disappointed .

    • 038   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I can't begin to count how many reviews have come out for this game comparing it to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance ( here on FFTA ) I wish they wouldn't do that . This is very much the original game with some key improvements . While I , like many would very much like to see a sequel to this game a well done remake is just as good . With 2 added characters , Classes ( Jobs ) , Multiplayer , smoothed over graphics , smoother game play and updated script and wording to truly resemble a very Feudal Age England Square Enix has truly turned a legend into a Classic . Many complain that some of the more forgivable features of FFTA ( changing Equipment and Jobs pre battle as opposed to preparing before landing on a battle area & the ability to redo a move should it be a mistake . ) Quite a few Tactical RPG's support as unforgiving a Battle System as the Original Final Fantasy Tactics . Although I would have enjoyed some new content and a bit more in the area of side quests I do love the fact that the PSP now has a shinning title that will perhaps give it a much needed boost to attract in even more exceptional games .

    • 040   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) For those who never played the PSOne original , FF Tactics is a solid turn-based RPG with outstanding length and customization features . The storyline , a complete snore in the early hours , ramps up into an unexpected gem . However , two major complaints with the game ( and the reason for the two-star review ) : 1 . The genre has passed this game by . Disgaea ( also a remake , but of a PS2 game ) on the PSP has a more diverse battle system , and Jeanne D'Arc is such a polished product in terms of storytelling and gameplay compared to this one . 2 . The graphics . Read every other review here , even the good ones , and you'll notice the same complaint about the graphical translation : They're FUZZY . Too fuzzy for my eyes . I felt almost sickened after the playing the game for extended periods , and could not finish playing the game as I did with the PSOne version . This , combined with the restrictive camera angles , makes playing the game a chore for the retinas . Be forewarned . There's a good game hidden underneath the visual mess , but it's QUITE a mess .

    • 044   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) If you like Final Fantasy , this game is your reason to buy a PSP ! This game is a well-polished port of FFT for the original playstation . Some will say the graphics on the PSP version look better and I agree with them . Others may complain about the occasional wait time when doing something cool like casting a spell or putting the smackdown on a monster but I disagree with them . While there may be a second or two of wait while things load here and there . . . it doesn't detract from the game itself . While Nintendo's DS games show that simple can be fun , Sony's games such as this show that amazing graphics , great sound and a good storyline are even more fun . If you're into RPGs , buy this ! You won't be dissapointed .

    • 047   Final Fantasy Tactics is a very fond name to many gamers ( including me ) and this port has been wonderfully re-translated beautiful all new added cut-scenes really bring this gem to life . 2 new character classes * spoiler * Onion Knight and Dark Knight . Multiplayer and VS modes really make this the best tactics ever . many of the coolest unlockables being unlocked in multiplayer mode , you might be asking why would I play multiplayer ? well several reasons , the new clases have a huge assortment of items ONLY unlockable in Multiplayer as well as several new character additions and finally the 2 new classes . the only part of the gameplay they didn't fix perfectly is the balance in battles the 3rd battle is harder then some of the boss stages but this is so minute a flaw it's hardly worth the mension . the only other slightly noticable flaw is a tad of slowdown during attack animations but otherwise this game is currently winning awards all over ( game of the month PSM - 9.5 score ) and is better then it was before . truly amazing how well a game can be revamped into perfection unlike so many others . all the jobs in the job system are back and all the customization on characters you could ever want make this the stratagy rpg to own this year ! Graphics : old school New cutscenes etc 5.0 stars its a gem and wouldn't have been the same too overhauled . Sound : its Final Fantasy do they EVER scrimp on the sound ? 5 stars ! overall : with added classes , characters , enemies , multiplayer modes and more this is the final fantasy to own . 5 Stars ! buy it here : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions
    • 048   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This game has withstood the test of time , gracefully . REVIEW THIS is a mature game that will appeal to old and young alike , with plenty of treachery , violence , and tragic happenings . The story was made without any of the stupidity of odd creatures , judges , and race defined job classes . In my opinion , all the subsequent Nintendo DS remakes were stripped of many tactical options and lack any of the shine this game's story has . So . . IF YOU HAVE PLAYED ANY FF Tactic GAMES PRIOR , THEY ARE NOTHING LIKE THIS GAME . In fact , the Advance and DS follow-ups were entirely geared toward children and simply made me angry with the tactic crippling judge aspect . CON Now if you've played this already on the PSX , you may notice right away the abilities animations are very sluggish . The cure spell 1 and 2 takes ~ 15 seconds to cure 4 people . . The game also reads from the UMD often which I think runs the battery down a bit faster than usual . VERDICT Anyway , War of the Lions is a legendary game , ( like X-com to the PC ) , and no other turn based strategy I've played on the PSP , Playstation X , 2,3 has bested this game in story or tactical options . Go ahead , buy it and find out why .

    • 055   Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Love this game , ive played FFTA and FFTA2 . The only problem I have with those games is that they have hte exact same story line , but with one major change . Both characters are transported to a magical world by a book and must find their way back home . In FFTA2 the main character doesn't want to go home , but it the far superior and more depth FFTA Marche wants to return to the real world . FFTA is one of my favorite games , but Im looking forward to an amazing FF game with a tactical battle system ( I have the time-turns like in FF4 and 5 ) that doesn't revolve around a magical book .

    • 058   Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) If you played FFT for PSOne or Advance , you've pretty much played this game . But that doesn't mean that this game is not solid , because it undeniably IS . Just when I thought that FFT couldn't possibly achieve more replay value , they go and add the Dark Knight job class , which requires you to master ( i.e . learn ALL of the skills for . . . ) Knight and Black Mage as well as gain level 8 for the Dragoon , Geomancer , Ninja , and Samurai . That easily adds over 10 hours of gameplay to a game that already required about 40 or 50 hours to complete - - and I use the word complete lightly . For those who are new to the FFT universe , this game is a Medieval-inspired , turn-based strategy role playing game with a compelling ( albeit a bit convoluted ) storyline , and an extremely addictive character development component called a job system . For example , the main character Ramza begins the game as a Squire , But he may change between any of the following jobs eventually : Chemist , Archer , Knight , Onion Knight , White Mage , Black Mage , Time Mage , Monk , Thief , Summoner , Dragoon , Ninja , Samurai , Geomancer , Mystic , Orator , Bard , Arithmetician , Dark Knight , and Mime . There are also other characters in the story whose inherent job classes cannot be shared such as the Machinist , Skyseer , or Sword Saint . Add to that the ability to inter-mix different abilities and you have a plethora of different combinations to make a wholly unique and powerful soldier . There's not enough space to go into details about this game , so I'll just leave it at this : if you like strategy RPGs or have a thing for character development , this game is the right choice . Loads of replay value , great story . . . great stuff .

    • 061   Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Final Fantasy Tactics is inarguably one of my top three favorite games of all-time , and I've played thousands of games . The story , audio , gameplay , and more are the epitome of the Strategy RPG genre . I find the game extremely satisfying , and it's the type of game that you can play through several times . I recently purchased the PSP version , which is somewhat of a remake , and have had some good and bad experiences . For one , the added cutscenes bring some great new flavor to the title , and make the story much more tangible . I haven't played with the new classes , but they're a great addition from what I hear , and the multiplayer adds plenty of play value to an already jam-packed game . The only gripe I have is that when an ability is used during gameplay , the game speed and framerate drop noticeably while the audio plays normally . This issue doesn't make much sense because the original FFT plays perfectly fine on the PSP . For whatever reason , Square Enix dropped the ball during coding ( they've been screwing up for a decade now ) . With that said , this is in my opinion one of the best games of all-time , and one that you won't soon forget . It works extremely well as a portable title , and will bring you plenty of enjoyment for years to come .

The improved cut scenes are phenominal and the new aspect ratio makes the game work on PSP almost flawlessly . • 076   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) FF : T is a rare example of a truly brainy game . Neither quick reflexes nor level grinding will help you ; you have to be clever . So much so that despite its near perfect execution FF : T certainly isn't for everyone . This is a game for the thinker , the long-term planner and the patient tactician . Depending on how well you plan your character builds , it can be impossibly hard or surprisingly easy , and there are innumerable ways to develop them . Even the plot is demanding ; its complexity is on par with that of the Wars of the Roses on which the game's story is clearly based . Consider this both a recommendation and a warning . I first played the PS1 version of FF : T in my early teens and was decidedly underwhelmed . Being used to simpler , story-driven JRPGs such as Final Fantasy and Suikoden I was both confused with the interface and frustrated by the battles , while the plot seemed about as engaging as a history syllabus . Needles to say I quickly dismissed it . When I picked up this remake about a year ago I was a great deal more mature ; I patiently sat through the long tutorial , I learned the motions and was rewared with one of the best strategy games ever made . The story , once I was able to appreciate it , was one of the most mature and intelligent stories ever put out by Square . As for whether to play to remake or the original , it's hard to decide on a definitive version but personally I could never go back to the latter after War of the Lions . The remake features a new script of shakespearean quality , beautiful watercolour cutscenes , great voice acting , new classes for your characers ( including the dreaded Dark Knight ) , new sidequests and some awesome Final Fantasy cameos such as Cloud and Balthier . The downside is that you have to play it on a much smaller screen , and there is a technical issue which makes spells and their sound effects somewhat desyncronized . The original as none of these issues , but it's more expensive , has a shoddy localization job and the graphics will look very grainy if you have new HD big screen .

    • 080   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I really don't know where to begin with this game . I was always a fan of the original Final Fantasy Tactics . This game is essentially that game . There are a few minor plot points and the localization - - originally it was patently bad , and now it is actually near FFXII quality , and that is to say its nearly to the point of the best localized game ever - - is a vast improvement , but when it comes down to the mechanics its virtually unchanged . I have always been in the camp that Final Fantasy Tactics got a bum rep from the beginning . It was certainly deserves a lot more credit than it was ever given . Its greatest flaw was probably its release was immediately after Final Fantasy VII and the two games couldn't be more different both in the way it plays and its tone . I know I already complained about its original localization . It was bad , but it wasn't actually wasn't significantly below par for 1997 , but that was addressed in War of the Lions , so we needn't revisit . This game is one of the best Strategy Role Playing Games ( SRPGs ) ever created . It has a lot of competition , none of which fares particularly well in the US market , but in this case , people are not cheated out of a good introduction to the genre by being suckered into a ' Final Fantasy ' ( FF ) fan . I will admit , as an FF fan , I have bought some pretty awful games - - games that had no business being made let alone sold - - under the Final Fantasy sticker . For fans of the series , you will also get one of the most in depth job experiences of any of the titles . It has customization that can be at once both simple in style and profound in effect . Players can expect to enjoy finding a balance for each of their characters . Admittedly there are some oddities with this game . The befuddling obsession with the zodiac creates some bizarre results . Some of your people will just suck , while Cidolfus Orlandeau continues to murder everyone with brutal efficiency . This has always been , for me , a cheap and unfortunate inclusion in the original , and it remains unchanged here . . . but then you don't have to use him . I personally preferred to hire my own people and to develop them just the way I liked , even if they were not the greatest . Since you basically haul around a platoon of men , women , and beasts , you have a lot of room to customize here too . For people who really love other Final Fantasies , you've got Cloud in there and now Balthier too . Their inclusion seems perhaps a little forced , particularly the latter , but this is really more for people who want to play too much of the game anyway . The game offers a solid 40 hours of play , probably significantly longer than that . At $ .50 per hour , you could hardly ask for a better deal . Graphics are as to be expected ; somewhat low in quality considering its a PS1 port , but slightly better than that . The new cut-scenes are just beautiful though . My one complaint or warning is that the game has always been rather above the average US player's difficulty level . Thats not to say its impossible or that we suck as a whole , but its no secret that many games are made a little less challenging when they get shipped over here for a more casual experience ( AKA : an experience that is not marked by repeated Game Over screens ) . You kind of get the sense they didn't bother with this . That was partly true in the original version , and it is definitely true for this revision . Another neat addition is the online play . Its a little slow , but considering that you're playing a turn based strategy game . . . what do you expect ? You can also reap unique rewards like this , so participation is certainly rewarded . With all that said , this is easily one of my favorite games ever . I loved the original and this is an improvement . This is what Square needs to be doing with their time . This is what you should be playing on your PSP . Buy it !

    • 098   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Reviewed for Big Boss Games by : Tim Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions By : Square-Enix Format : PlayStation Portable - PSP The story intro ( As taken from the instruction book ) : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions : Sustained by the Lord and Light , the twin headed lion reigns over the kingdom of Ivalice . A year has passed since the loss of the Fifty Years ' War . The prince , thought two years of age , has ascended the throne , his father having been claimed by sudden malady . Too young to rule , the prince requites a regent , who would be king in all but name . The queen's brother , Duke Larg , had seemed the obvious choice for the regency . However , fearing the influence such an appointment would give the queen , the council refused to back him . Instead , they appointed the kings younger cousin , Duke Goltanna , as regent . Duke Goltanna and Duke Larg were both generals who had distinguished themselves during the Fifty Years ' War . Duke Goltanna counts as ally the greater part of the aristocracy loyal to the crown . However , the fallen nobility and free knights left in the aftermath of the Fifty Years ' War have aligned themselves with Duke Larg . With Duke Goltanna under the banner of the Black Lion , and Duke Larg under that of the White , the stage is set for what history would record as the War of the Lions . Story : 5 / 5 You start out as a young boy named Rama . You must make some tough choices and witness some horrible events , while saving the world from the Zodiac Stones . Sound : 3.5 / 5 The musical score of Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions is typical fantasy ; it sets the mood and tone of this great tale . The new voice acting adds a great touch ! Graphics : 4.5 / 5 The in-game graphics have not been updated from the original game on the PlayStation One . What made this edition of the game shine is the addition of some great-animated cut scenes with lots of voice acting placed at the right moments , when the drama and excitement are high . This was a great way to add more depth to the story and keep the same old game that we all love . Game play : 3.5 / 5 The game play for this game is Strategy RPG . You move your pieces and attack , then the bad guys move and attack . The battle system for Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions is very deep with being able to change your job class like Squire , Chemist , Knight , Archer , Monk , White Mage , Black Mage , Time Mage , Summoner , Thief , Orator , Mystic , Geomancer , Dragoon , Samurai , Ninja , Arithmetician , Bard , Dancer or Mime . Just for this edition , two new job classes were added , a Dark Knight and the Onion Knight . The dark knight is my personal favorite because they start out strong . The Onion Knight is the strongest overall ; you just need to build them in layers . ( Oh , tons of work ! ) With mixing and matching job skills you could make tons of combinations like a Summoner that can cast Black magic and wield a sword , or a Ninja with white magic . Have fun with all the different possible combinations you can make . I like the jobs system in the taverns , in town you can gain much need Exp . points by taking on those extra jobs . Replay Value : ? / 5 With the story mode 1.5 / 5 , with the addition of multiplayer this game is given new life . 3.5 / 5 . You and your friend must have a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSP . You can then choose between 2 modes . Melee = you vs . your friend or Co-Op you both vs . the computer . Overall : 4.5 / 5 This game is a must have for any Final Fantasy fan or someone who enjoys mystery , political intrigue or Shakespearean tragedy . Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions for the PSP is one of the gems that I've decided to hold onto and add to my very selective collection .

    • 103   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) THis game is an amazing instalment in the final fantasy series . The characters are amazing , the graphics , the story , the gameplay , the character classes etc . were all near flawless . The only real problem is the replay ability . The game ends in a way that prevents you from continuing past its completion . Once you beat it , you just keep starting over at the halfway point of the last mission , so you can never leave it or ever go on to further develop your characters . That puts you at a complete standstill in the game with the only remedy being to have had the presence of mind to have made a separate save file before the last mission . Otherwise , once you beat it , that's it , you cant continue , you just have to restart the game all the way from the beginning , all that progress lost . Which sucks with a game like this . Thats why i can't give it 5 stars , im sorry FFT , but the end is just a let down .

    • 107   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This is essentially the same game I remember from 1997 , with cleaned-up dialogue - - something I'd always wished for - - and the addition of some very nice animated cut scenes , and of course , new secret characters , extra party slots , etc . The story is finally comprehensible and easy on the eyes . I strongly disagree with people who claim that the dialogue is Shakespearean ; I assume they mean it's too formal and archaic to follow easily , but if they think that , I guarantee you they've neither read nor seen any Shakespeare . Unfortunately , They were right . A port or re-make of a game should attempt to meet or exceed the quality of the original game in every area , but the graphical slowdowns and sound effect changes in The War of the Lions are very real and very noticeable , at least to a longtime fan of the game . They are a step backwards from the quality found in the original . In the very first battle , for example , when a certain Dark Knight uses one of his special abilities , you can see the game's speed go from smooth to stuttering , and the sound effect for the ability - - which used to be an intricate magical noise , followed by a SHINK ! as the effect finished - - has been replaced by an odd blooping noise . I don't know why Square decided not to fix the slowdown or why they replaced some of the excellent sound effects with lower-quality ones , but I feel it's a huge detriment to a game that otherwise would have been a perfect 10 in my book . I docked two stars from my rating of this game for three reasons , because they hampered my enjoyment of it : The slowdowns ( they had time to fix this during localization , but neglected to do so ) , the sound effects ( same ) , and the fact that Square neglected to fix it before American release , didn't bother to inform anyone of the flaw , and apparently don't ever plan on fixing it . I would have given it only 1 or 2 stars had the dialogue not been cleaned up and extra content added . Fun factor is still four , because it's still essentially the same Final Fantasy Tactics I love .

    • 115   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) As a huge fan of the first FFT , I must say I was pleased with the PSP retread . The new animation was beautiful ( although there are a few of the cutscenes I kinda miss in their original form . . . but that's just me ) , the voices were acceptable , and the retranslation was infinately superior to the PS1 version ( though still not perfect ) . They also took some of the censorship out ( hooray for blood ! ) . I wasn't overly impressed with the new classes ( the dark knight was nice ) , but they made for interesting additions . My only real issues with the game are slowdown and sound effects . The slowdown is self-evident . . . anytime you or an ememy uses anything other than the most basic attacks there is a disjoint between the animation and the sound ( as the sound still plays when it should , while the animation grinds down to a turtle pace ) . And , for some reason , they altered or removed some other sound effects . My last minor issue was the renaming of certain things , which really has no bearing on the game itself ( changing Heavenly Knight to Knight Gallant , for example ) . These minor changes didn't effect the gameplay , but I felt distracted whenever I saw them . Overall , I was highly impressed . This game was just as fun as the original ( and much more portable ) , and certainly worth your money if you want to enjoy FFT at the drop of a hat .

    • 117   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) In a strange way , one could say that the original Final Fantasy Tactics was sort of the middle child of the Playstation era , sandwiched between the massive Final Fantasy VII and its heavily-hyped Final Fantasy VIII . Many found the story intriguing but translation shoddy , gameplay addicting but frequently hard and the music was praised as well though done by someone other than Uematsu . As part of the Ivalice Alliance compilation , Square decided to revisit the original and do some touchups and upgrades . This isn't an entirely redone game but rather it's remastered shall we say and while it does have its occasional flaws , it was actually the reason why I bought a PSP in the first place . Story : Not to get too story-heavy since it's engrossing but complicated to know where to start , the game centers on the world of Ivalice and the conflict as to what to do about the recently available throne . 2 warring factions sought after the title to be king until history records show a young man named Delita Heiral was the hero that stopped the conflict , though there was also a young man named Ramza Beoulve that also had a hand but why is his name not mentioned in the records and what came about that brought the war to an end ? Graphics : The in-game graphics during battle and cutscenes don't really look any different than before . There's a degree of sharpness that I can tell is changed but the sprites don't look like much has changed . Where the game excels is the animated cutscenes that remind me of a drawing being continously animated on the fly as colors will dance around and it's very distinctive and unique and also a pleasure to watch . Sound / Music : Like Final Fantasy XII or Tactics Advance 1 and 2 , composer Hitoshi Sakimoto , who also did Vagrant Story and Odin Sphere , takes over the reins from series mainstay Uematsu and while I always thought Sakimoto has a gift for arrangement / orchestrations but lacking in melodies , this soundtrack is some of his best work and it's easy to find yourself tracking down the soundtrack . The voice acting is also quite good and never gets into weird casting choices or stiled delivery . Gameplay : If you've ever played a strategy RPG before , it's pretty much the same thing . The characters move on a chessboard-esque battlefield and when turn is up , could move anywhere you want . Sword users have to be directly against the enemy while archers , spell casters or gun users have to be a relatively close space to attack . Spells can also targer a specific group of tiles , allowing it to actually hit more than one enemy if they're grouped together or a positive spell like Cure . What I sometimes didn't care for was you'd cast a spell in a spot only the character ( s ) that'll benefit can't really move and there was a few times where a character would start to cast , let's say Fire , and the enemy goes right up to you prompting the spell both him and you . But you gradually figure out the rules and it becomes easier to figure out what to do . I usually never saw the appeal in the Job system , preferring the class-specific style of something like VI or IX but in this game it was weirdly beneficial , moreso I thought . Characters start out with a generally low assortment of jobs to choose from but the more they spend JP ( job points ) on abilities , the more they can access other and better ones . So you can have a Knight with Black Magic abilities or Thief who knows how to use Dragoon abilities . The customization possibilities are quite endless and should you know how to best present your party , you could be brutal in battle . But at the start , I was kind of sad to see the bow not being sold in stores which would've made getting an Archer early on very beneficial , not to mention JP-allotting can take quite awhile . My one complaint ( aside from the slowdown issues which are very noticeable though they were never intrusive to gameplay ) was its difficulty . Basically , the game can be quite erratic in whether or not a story-centric battle will decimate your party or you'll handle a few battles with ease only to be hit by a whopper of a battle and indeed the initial couple battles were annoying because my party was just not strong enough . Since characters level by successful actions , attack or otherwise , rather than an end battle experience as seen in most RPG's , have your characters do as much stuff as possible . But be warned : there's times where it's a bit unfair and characters can die left and right . While the difficulty could get to some and the slowdown's more annoying than anything , Tactics is a great way to spend some time with your PSP . . . a lot of time .

    • 121   Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I bought this game knowing it would be the same as the one for the PS1 . Which it is for the most part , there are some upgrades such as the CGI scenes . Cool features like the head-to-head battle with a friend via wlan and co-op battle . It's still a great game and one of the best in the FF series .

    • 124   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) When I first purchased this game I thought it would be a whole new adventure set in Ivalice after we all saw Ramza kick the bucket . However this game is exactly like the origional Final Fantasy Tactics with some changes . The changes are as follows : Some characters have different names , some locations have different names , and everyone speaks as if they are part of some poorly written old english stage performance . The dialogue is not all that bad , just how it went from english to whatever it is now was kind of funky to get used to . The cinematics are great , I love how they are drawn but the dialogue is lacking . All the lines are cheesy at best but the visuals are good . All in all , if you loved FFT , then you will love this game , just be prepared for some changes .

    • 133   but , i thouroughly enjoy this game . i have the original for playstation and it has been far too long since i have played it , but i guess i don't really need to now that i am playing this game like crazy . i am only in chapter two , after about 30 hours of gameplay but that is because i am spending way too much time leveling up my characters and teaching them abilities . many people find a delay in spellcasting to be annoying , but i haven't really noticed it . i am not saying that it isn't there , but i don't find it to be a big deal in turn-based battle alltogether . the new cutscenes look great , and are pretty awesome . the only issue i have with this game , is that i don't have anyone with which to wi-fi with right now . i guess the only way to get weapons for the new jobclasses is to do missions with a friend ( who has a copy of this game too ) , so i will have to wait until i get back to the states to do those missions with the only other person i know to have a copy of this game . either that , or randomly encounter another , here in iraq . overall , great game , great fun , good times . i took a star off of the overall because of my aforementioned problem with wi-fi .
    • 143   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I've only played through the first few battles so far , but having beaten the PS1 game countless times , I've seen enough to notice a few differences . Overall , game play is exactly how i remember it , enjoyable , easy to understand , and just plain fun . One thing about the abilities though : i did notice a slight slowdown in animation while some spells took effect , not enough to deter me from playing , but maybe 1 fps , so no big deal there . Some sounds have been taken off the ends of spells too , ( ie . no * shing * with the spellsword abilities when the sword rises from the ground ) but as far as i can tell , both sound and visuals are in sync . I'm playing on a psp 2001 model , so maybe the other reviews were on the psp 1000 ? The translation is also slightly different , in a good way though . Much more ' accurate ' to how one would expect people from an era of castles and knights to speak . Its a nice touch . I only gave it a 4 / 5 because of the minor animation slowdown and the fact that since I'm used to the normal screen presentation , the wide presentation does look a slight bit fuzzy . Other than that , I can't wait to get into the core story . Highly recommended for anyone who likes the FF series or strategy type games .

    • 153   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) ( While pasted from GameFAQs , I did write the original review there . ) GRAPHICS : The graphics are sprites , but they're good ones at that .

    • 158   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I basically got this game because I tried to play the PS1 original twice before and could never get past the first few battles . I figured if I got this version , it'd settle once and for all the greatness of this game . And once again , I was right . They took all the great things about the original and added to it . Better camera control , improved translation and controls , new jobs and characters to use ( including Balthier from FFXII and Luso from FF Tactics A2 . ) If you liked the original and want to get taken back , try this game out . It'll give you what you enjoyed the first time around and more .

    • 164   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I borrowed this game from a friend to try it out . I had it on my Wish List but I had to delete it after trying it out for a few days . I remember seeing FFT at the rental store when it came out , but I never made myself rent it . I can't see why it's such a popular game , I found it way too difficult and boring . I'll give some pros and cons and then explain why I couldn't make myself play this one . Pros : - Great classic Final Fantasy music and SFX - Interesting cut-scenes and story - Lots of career paths if you can make it that far Cons : - Snore-fest gameplay - Difficult - Tutorials / dialogue can't be skipped - Camera angles / geography I made it to about the 4th or 5th combat scene before I became overly frustrated with this game . Having played most of the FF's and a ton of RPG's in between , I figured I could cruise through this game and enjoy what seems to be a lot of people's favorite . I became stuck on a battle involving a Knight , some Black Mages , and Archers . After buying what I could to equip my party members , equipping all new gear , and spending all job points , I figured I was ahead of the curve and over-prepared for this fight . Well after about 9 or 10 Game Over's , I'm convinced that it's not my fault for getting stuck on this battle . I tried all Squires , Squires and Chemists , different load-outs , different weapons , different skills , different party formations , and just about every tactic I could think of , and COULD NOT beat this level . I tried upgrading party member's jobs which only led to undergeared ( and no gear available at the shops ) fighters and hardly any job skills . In the end I just gave the game back to my friend , who agreed with me on my thoughts but told me to keep trying , but I didn't feel like playing a game where I get frustrated more than I have fun . The second worst thing I found with this game is the extremely boring combat . My psp is constantly going into screen dim ? mode because the game runs on auto-pilot when the computer is playing . Most of the time , I would only have to hit X to confirm that some random computer enemy unit gained a job level , then it would be back to waiting . . . On a similar note , if you happen to enter into a tutorial , it CAN'T be skipped at all , and you'll be forced into watching it until it's over . The last thing I would like to complain about it the camera . There were many maps that I fought on which had heightened areas that you cannot see behind . This forces you to turn the camera in 1 / 4 increments or hit the shoulder buttons to zoom out to squinting distance , but still doesn't give you a better view . Several times I came across a turn where I wanted to move a character , couldn't see some spaces in the direction I wanted to go in , and had to either guess move or choose a new direction to move in . I'm going to leave out the smaller details on the game as a whole , since I just wanted to share my extremely frustration experience with this game and why I couldn't play it . I realize that I could spend more time with it , dying and sitting through boring combat , but the things I went over just ruin the game completely for me . Take my opinions with small consideration and please realize I'm not insulting you if you love this game : ) . Thanks for reading .

    • 166   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) The best Final Fantasy ! ! Yes its better than FF6 and 7 ! I love it on PS1 and even more on PSP with the newly added classes and cutscenes , and now even portable . I heard many people complaint about the slowdown when you cast a spell or special attack , it doesn't really bother me . It was annoying at first for a hour and then I just got used to it and it doesn't really bother me anymore . Pick it up if you love SRPG ! The best one there is .

    • 168   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I'm going to make this short and sweet because the other low reviews pretty much cover everything . This was a weak remake of a great game . Now I know everyone who loves the original FFT wants to give this 5 stars , but this was [ . . ] . Sounds and animations that separate , a rather over-complex dialogue ( I liked the one in the original . Yes , I know it was rushed and came out bad , but that added some of the charm ) . Everything slows down for no reason , you would've thought they would have worked stuff like this out before releasing this game . But wait , 2 NEW JOB CLASSES ZOMG ! One is useless unless you master all the other classes ( and find it's equipment in VS mode ) and the other is really too difficult to worry about getting in the greater scheme of things . Nice try , I hope they get it right the next time around .

    • 170   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I played this back on the PS1 back in the old days and was hoping that this would have an update . Tthe spells and skill effects slow the framerate to a crawl , lasting several seconds longer than it does in the original game . They look pathetic ( graphically ) and there is absolutely no reason that this should be happening . Should you finish the game , the time you would lose to graphical slowdowns would be at least a few hours worth . Even the problem of telling you a half-tutorial with each action still persists , such as the game telling you to select a square to move to when you select ' Move ' . There is no reason that this should be there in this day and age . Even the AI seems to be worse than in the original . In the third story mission on Mandalia Plains , the hostage got himself killed in the second move rushing into the enemy despite receiving heavy damage all three times I played it . Placing a healer as close to him in the beginning didn't help because it was impossible to reach him in one move with the chemist's slow and limited movement . This rendered the second dialogue choice an impossibility without getting a Game Over , and not only does this shatter the playability of the game but it takes along any fun that could be had with it . All of this coming after playing Jeanne D ' Arc is nothing short of a complete letdown . After getting used to fast and responsive controls , playing the PSP version of FFT seemed slow and clunky . Stick to the PS1 version and if you absolutely need to see the video cutscenes , which are good , there's YouTube for that .

    • 172   I know there are plenty of negative reviews out there already but as this will be the only one star rating I'm hoping I can get this message out quickly , because I'm already sore at not having done this sooner . For anybody who has played the original Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSONE loved it ( seriously loved it ) I implore you , do not buy this game ! Of all the negative reviews out there bashing the games flaws ( the lag on spells , the useless new job classess , etc . ) nobody is saying what REALLY needs to be said . And that is as follows . . . Squenix ruined this game when they increased the amount of JP necessary to gain skills and go up joblevels . For anybody who played the original we all known how hard the game could be and how very necessary it was to spend a good portion of your time developing and training your characters . The game can be quite time consuming in this one aspect , albeit , but it was quite fun and very satisfying ( not a word I use often ) to see the pay off in characters that could dish out the damage and hold their own in tough situations . Your own A-team , so to speak . The demand for more JP utterly KILLS ! this experience . Take for instance the Lancer's jump abilities . The level 8 jumps only required 900JP to master . Now they require 1500 ! and thats just one example . In Final Fantasy Tactics , the higher a characters job level the more JP they could aquire . Simultaneously increasing JP required for leveling a character's job level AND gaining skills makes it even more time consuming . It increases exponetially the amount of time needed to level your characters . If feels like you're getting corn-holed from both ends . You can't gain as much JP AND more JP are required to gain skills . AGGH ! For instance , I always like to get Ramza the Ninja's two-swords ability before his one on one duel with Gafgarion . In this way he can use sword break two times in one turn and turn Gafgarion's game completely on it's head . With the PSP version of the game , however , it probably would have taken far too much time to develop Ramza that far . I sold the game after I beat chapter one after realizing getting to this point would require hours , and hours of training while my eyeballs slowly fell out of my skull after staring down at that tiny little screen for so long . Wander around , enter a battle , ingnore the monsters and start doing all the thing us veterans do to gain JP like the Squire's Accumulate , only however much time you spend leveling your characters in the PSONE version , times that by 2.5 and you have a rough estimate of how much you'll playing ( and feeling like a nerd with no life ! ) I am terribly dissapointed with this game ! There is Oh , so much Square enix ( or Squenix ) could have done to make this better ! Giving access to jobs only the bosses had , such as Arc Knight , Sorcorer , Assassin , and many others . Elmdor's Teleport 2 ability , better weapons , better jobs , more missions . . . All of this , FOREVER out of reach it seems because the sadists at Squenix saw fit to give us this inferior remake . Shame on them !

We loved this game and want sequels in the series . This , is not a new game . It should be a gold edition or 10 year anniversary series There are 2 new features between this and the original : Some animations Multiplayer capability This doesn't constitute a new game and a new title . Also as other reviewers have pointed out , the game runs slowly . I think Square Enix should take this off the shelf and create the sequel that fans really want .

  • Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Let's see , you just picked up War of the Lions , excited , because you love tactic-based RPGs . What you got was the best tactical RPG port of all time , full with new jobs , and improved graphics , storylines , depth , and basically everything . Final Fantasy Tactics : War of the Lions is the best role-playing game on the PSP . It has everything you could ask for a tactical RPG . First off , you have over twenty jobs to unlock and choose from . This increases the depth tenfold , even if you beat the game , you probably have many jobs to master completely , which is a joy for the replay value . The battle system is well thought out , with hardly any bugs . The camera starts out awkward , but you can move it , so problem solved . It plays out like an average tactical RPG , full with spells , normal attack , the wait option , as well as support , reaction , and passive abilities , to add even more depth to certain characters . You can do this to any character , which immerses you in the world quickly , and joyfully . The graphics have solid sprites , great attacks , and most of all , cel-shaded cut-scenes . It truly looks like the game is alive , and the story-telling is now truly mastered . Also , you can replay them , as well as other , normal game-based cut-scenes , which is a great feature . Although , the graphics suffer a lot in this game . Every magic attack suffers a slowdown , which is annoying . The sound works properly , but it finishes before the attack , because the attack is slowed down , which practically kills the enjoyability of the attacks . To be honest , I usually play with the sound off , but it's still nice to listen too . Speaking of sound , let's talk about sound . The soundtrack is wonderful , the voices for the cut-scenes well matched , and not to mention , the attack sounds are perfect . Although , some sounds in the normal game-based cut-scenes are a bit dinky and bland , but otherwise it's alright . Let's talk about the story . It is set in a very medieval setting , it has the divided kingdom , lords , dukes , and most of all , the church , which is , as you might guess : Corrupt . Of course , everyone talks in the ye olde speake . Some of the translating went haywire , so we end up with some spoony bards . If anyone knows what spoony means , please don't hesitate to tell me . But enough of that . This game is full of switching sides , corrupt dukes , backstabbing , and many more believable situations in the times of ye olde speake . Ye verrily . The depth of this game is great . Many jobs are included , as well as the new introduction of the Onion and Dark Knight , both very powerful and challenging to get . There are new missions , as well as errands where you dispatch three members of your party to gain job points , gil and as well as ancient artefacts . It's nifty , to say the least . Also , the re-playability is fantastic . The job classes are good to try out new things , as well as the story-line is worth re-watching again . And maybe again . And most of all , four slave slots . Yes , four . It's what many of us like to call awesome . Overall : Graphics - 8.5 Solid sprites , great looking attacks , backed up by the cut-scenes . Although , it suffers from frequent slowdown . Sound - 9.0 Some sounds are a bit dinky , but everything sounds wonderful from attacks to voices . Gameplay - 10 New missions , new multiplayer , new jobs , new errans , and more artefacts , once again , story-line is backed up by the cut-scenes . Lasting Appeal - 10 Overall , more content , which means more time . With this you'll have a great time , and you'll have it many times , for this is all backed up with four save slots . This is my favorite game for the PSP , and I can say one thing , it'll be staying in my PSP for a while .
    • 012   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) When first hearing and reading about Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions I was ecstatic . I purchased it as soon as I could for my PSP and was slightly disappointed when I realized it was exactly the same as my Playstation game , Final Fantasy Tactics . The only difference this game has is the change in names of some characters , the dialogue is all new and worded differently as if it were out of Medieval England or some such depiction of the Medieval era , and the new cut scenes are great with an incredible animation style but alas the lines are a little cheesy . If you love Final Fantasy Tactics this is a great way to make it portable . Just note , there are differences in names , what classes are called , and how they speak . Took a little getting used to but the game is still a lot of fun .

    • 022   Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This game is very well known , there isn't a need to go into all the great aspects of this game .

    • 030   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This is the first Final Fantasy Tactics I have played and I must say it was a very fun game . The plot got a little thick and confusing at times but not bad . The game play definitely makes up for the sometimes confusing plot . However , understanding how to build strong characters is tricky . It is never explained to you what the Bravery and Faith of each character represents , which is vital . Pretty much Bravery is how strong of a warrior ( knight , ninja , monk , etc . ) your character can become . Bravery deals with the physical attack strength and defense of a character . Faith , on the other hand , deals with how strong of a spell caster ( white mage , black mage , time mage , etc . ) your character can become . Faith deals with magical attack and defense of a character . If you are like me and don't know this the game is going to be very hard and frustrating . You will have high level mages who can never hit enemies with spells because they have low faith , and high level attackers who do pitiful damage because they have low bravery . I got half way through the game and had to start from scratch because my characters were just too weak to defeat anymore bosses . The lack to explain what the Bravery and Faith are for is the major flaw ( and probably one of the only flaws ) of this game . However , if you do know the importance of the Bravery and Faith of a character this game is tons of fun and well worth the buy , especially if you like role playing games or Final Fantasy . I wish I could give it 4 1 / 2 stars .

It does however , suffer from the same fundamental flaw as its predecessor , length of time . To build up job points and classes you basically have to spend hours upon hours beating your own people up and healing them and having someone sit there with the squire class and use Focus every turn to earn job points . It takes an insane amount of time to get job points without some kind of cheat . Without that , be prepared to spend a very long , long , LONG time on this game . Even being portable and being able to pick it up and set it down at whim while great , I still found myself frequently getting sleepy from boredom due to lack of necessity for interactivity . If you could program the character to do a set move every single turn every single time and just automate the task , the game would do a lot better .

    • 035   Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This was a fantastic PSP game but I couldn't honestly reccommend it for everyone .

    • 046   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Final Fantasy Tactics is a very fond name to many gamers ( including me ) and this port has been wonderfully re-translated beautiful all new added cut-scenes really bring this gem to life .
    • 050   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) If you love strategy games this game is perfect . deep detail in character stats , tons of jobs and skills , i just love it . what caught me off guard was the story , it runs deep . its one of the only final fantasy games to be a tragedy .

    • 064   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This is my favorite RPG . If you like the original you will like this more . The only cons , which are extremely disappointing are : cons - 1 . You need a friend to get any quality equipment . I don't know anybody that has this game other than me , so I can't get the new / best equipment in the game , goodbye onion equipment . 2 . You can't steal the Genji armor for some reason . If you don't have a friend with this game you can never get it . 3 . Any monster breeding you need to do ( i.e . chantage , rubber suites ) must be done very early . With the inclusion of new characters there is no room to breed pigs for chantage .

    • 066   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Oh man were do i begin , I originally got this game a 10 years ago , on christmas i was 12 i started playing and thought wtf this is lame , so it sat on a shelf for 6 mo , i eventually talked to a friend about the game who was obsessed with it and told me about the JP system and skills ( no wonder i wasnt getting anywere.
    • 071   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) First of all , Final Fantasy Tactics is debately the BEST Final Fantasy in the series , is debately the BEST strategy-RPG title on any console , and debately the BEST PS1 game , and at $10 , you have no excuse NOT to pick it up . So I want to first heartily recommend you PICK IT UP RIGHT NOW ! It's a sufficiently challenging strategy title with deep gameplay and complimented with an incredible story driven with wonderful characters . The addition of cell-shaded cutscenes and appropriate voice-acting serve to enchance the narrative experience . There are two problems with this title , however . There is a conisderably steep learning curve and fans of more traditional-RPG oriented titles may find themselves frustrated by the difference in battle strategy and gameplay format . Also , the game's difficulty is not completely balanced and you may find yourself pit against a consideraby strong opponent early on in the game ; the game will require you to alter your strategy time and time again , however , this only makes winning those battles much more satisfying . The Second problem is actually somewhat annoying and unacceptable . Magic attacks and defenses cause the game to lag . LAG ? ! ! ! A second generation PS1 title should NOT have ANY lagging on a PSP . I have no idea why this occurs . I'm going to blame it on lazy programming . I don ; t know . Despite that , the game itself is worth far more than the $10 asking price , for both newcomers and veterans .

I have to say i loved the new cutscenes and jobs . The dark knight is slightly overpowered but you have to jump through plenty of hoops to get one . Onion Knight on the otherhand is extremely weak unless you master every other job in the game which took me well over sixty hours . Balthier was a good addition making mustadio completely obsolete with the added theif abilities on top of the machinist abilities . If you're a fan of games like fire emblem and the final fantasy tactics advance series then i suggest checking this one out it won't dissapoint , take it from the guy who has spent at least 480 hours playing ( ps1 and psp versions together ) .

    • 078   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Anyone that can give this game less than 4 stars doesn't love good videogames . The new translation is far better than the original and the new classes add some more variety and depth to an already insanely deep game . There are some minor tweaks I didn't care for : not being able to steal Genji gear from Elmdor etc . . Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed re-playing through one of the best games ever made .

    • 091   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Do you like strategy , turn-based , highly-customizable RPGs ? If so , then this game is for you ! If you like fast moving , graphically intense , low-strategy / quick-reaction games , then you might not like this game . I love the game ! I can't get enough of the strategy , and the high customization , via the variety of job-classes and skill combinations , lends to high replay-ability ! The story line is nothing to shake a stick at either . I've played this on both the PS & the PSP , needless to say , it's a classic in my book !

Pro's - Beautiful rendered cut-scenes with a different story-book style - The voice-acting fits the characters . - Battles call for strategy - Game-play can be hours long . This won't be finished in one-day's sitting ! - A long storyline with mini-quest Con's - Camera angle ! - Not all characters can use potion to heal , they must obtain this as a skill which can be annoying if your healer is way off and your units are being attacked to death . - Advancing to other areas can mean stronger monsters . Be careful not to venture off too quickly without the proper levels and gear ! I have yet to complete this game , but so far it is good . A great buy for anyone interested in a RPG that will last for more than a month .

    • 105   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I played this through and it feels to me just like the original did on the playstation , only with some fixes to the dialogue and such . Basically to me , it just feels like they cleaned it up and re-released it for PSP . I'd have been thrilled to see this released with HD graphics for PS3 . Anyway , the game is a heck of a lot of fun , the graphics are good , etc . The only thing I don't like is it seems harder to adjust the angles to see where units are . It might be a software bug , or it might just be that my eyes are having trouble with the small screen size on the PSP . Anyway , it's a great game , if you liked the original , you'll love this as well . Very very good game .

    • 119   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I have noticed only a few reviews have touched upon the multiplayer aspect of this game , so I thought for those who are interested I may be able to shed some more light on this part of the game . If you are lucky enough to have a friend to play with , Rendezvous Mode ( co-op ) and Melee Mode ( 1v1 ) just make this amazing game that much better . To start a multiplayer game you and your friend have to be in the same tavern . From there just select what game mode you would like to host / join . For Rendezvous Mode , you and another player can tackle up to 15 unique missions together as a team ( Mission 15 is only unlocked after beating the single player game . ) After completion of a mission you can pick a number of chests with items in them . The number of chests that you get to open depends on how well you completed mission . Examples of this are , deploying fewer characters , dont let any pty members be KO'ed , and KO'ing as many enemies as possible . 1 chest being the lowest number you can open , 5 being the highest . Both players get to open the same number of chests . Melee mode is a 1v1 battle with you and your friend being able to deploy up to 5 characters each . You can pick any battle area that at least one of the 2 players has cleared in storymode . Melee modes battle system is also a little different than the normal games . Players characters may sometimes Lock weapons , making both players having to rapidly hit the X button to try and win the deadlock , resulting in a critical hit or cancelling the others attack . Regular physical attacks , pressing the X button , if timed right will result in critical strike . Trap tiles effects are also changed in melee mode . The winner of the battle receives 3 chests , the loser receives only 1 . Draws result in both players getting 2 chests to open . A few things to note about the multiplayer modes : - You only gain JP while fighting no XP - Any items used , stolen , broken ( rend ) , thrown etc are returned to your inventory when the match ends . So you dont have to worry about losing anything in multiplayer mode . - You can gain rare items only available in these multiplayer modes . I know some ppl are angry about this but I think its good that they made multiplyer have some unique rewards ( makes ppl actually want to try and multi play ) . Besides the rare items you can get wont make or break your single player experience . They are by no means required to be able to beat the single player game or make it easier , but they are really cool = )

    • 128   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I first played this game back in ' 97 when it came out . I was really happy to see this come to PSP ( it was the reason I bought it ) It's a strategy RPG , that has a really good story , insanely addictive game play , and almost endless customization . I was hoping the PSP port wouldn't dissapoint , and it sure didn't . They added quite a bit to this version , including new characters , battlefields , job classes , and even multi-player . You can now battle with friends to see who has the best team , or just team up to take down some pretty intense missions . PROs : - Great story , characters , and the graphics hold up . - New CG's that add to the story . - A new translation to try and clear up any vague details from the PSX version . - New Multi-Player is a lot of fun . CONs : - A little lag sometimes on certain moves only . This isn't very noticeable though in my opinion . Compared to the PSX version it's nothing big . All in all , this is reason enough to own a PSP . If you liked the original or are just a big RPG fan I'd definitely recommend this .

    • 130   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) For a remake its good to know that you will get surprises from the new story added and the cinemas making me play the game again , but the slowdown from spells is a little dissapointing , the price the have to pay for a big game in a small system
    • 132   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) but , i thouroughly enjoy this game . i have the original for playstation and it has been far too long since i have played it , but i guess i don't really need to now that i am playing this game like crazy . i am only in chapter two , after about 30 hours of gameplay but that is because i am spending way too much time leveling up my characters and teaching them abilities . many people find a delay in spellcasting to be annoying , but i haven't really noticed it . i am not saying that it isn't there , but i don't find it to be a big deal in turn-based battle alltogether . the new cutscenes look great , and are pretty awesome . the only issue i have with this game , is that i don't have anyone with which to wi-fi with right now . i guess the only way to get weapons for the new jobclasses is to do missions with a friend ( who has a copy of this game too ) , so i will have to wait until i get back to the states to do those missions with the only other person i know to have a copy of this game . either that , or randomly encounter another , here in iraq . overall , great game , great fun , good times . i took a star off of the overall because of my aforementioned problem with wi-fi .

I remember when I first started playing this game and how me and my brother would get into arguments on whose army was stronger ! Now you can find out with this version of tactics . I only wish this version of tactics were available on the PS3 with online play !

The only down side I see is you still have to read the conversations between characters during the game . The other trouble I have is unlike the other final fantasy games where you can just level up beyond your enemies and pound them to little puddles of mush you have to be strategic in your attacks because the baddies keep pace with your level , that and the non-player members of your team always charge out there and get swatted down instead of staying with the group and supporting each other .

And now I can love it more because I can take it with me everywhere I go ! The gameplay is intact , the story is still intriguing and deeply satisfying , and the localization has been greatly improved with more thought put into the translations ( though even the original translation has its place in your heart ) . If you're new to Final Fantasy don't worry , little n00blet , I'm here for you . Tactics uses a turn-based , grid-mapped style of play where you move your char a number of spaces , select an action , then watch it unfold . Simple , yes ? The story involves a lot of plotting , betrayal , deception , a cameo by Cloud and Tifa ( mmm . . . Tifa ) , and CHOCOBOS ! ! Everybody loves chocobos ( I hear they taste like chicken ) .

    • 141   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This is an absolutely incredible game !
    • 145   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) The guys at square soft were geniuses for releasing this on PSP , and the added content sold me instantly with new redone videos and new character classes it looked like I'd have one of my favorite games portable . Sadly something happened when they brought it over because , yes it does have all new awesome content , but it also has a huge glaring flaw , if you do anymore besides a standard attack there is massive slowdown that is only followed up by the sound of the spell finishing before the actual spell . I'm not saying it make the game unplayable though , this is a must play who are new to this game , but I do have the option between playing this and on my PSOne , and if you have the same option I recommend that . The translation isn't as solid but it runs better . To sum it up , I'm very annoyed at S-E , I'm not sure how they ( or whoever published it ) was able to release it with such a glaring problem , they added lots of new features which I would have given much of them up for if they had the game properly ported with none of this new slow down . BUT I love Final Fantasy Tactics , it's a fantastic game with a great story and was and still is one of the best games of it's kind , I will just treasure my original Playstation version that much more .

    • 147   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) So , right off the bat , I must say , that Final Fantasy Tactics for PSX is my favorite game of all times . So I hope you understand that this review is quite biased , but , with good measure , I should hope . First off , the bad news : It's true , theres a significant slowdown during battles only , when casting spells ( protect takes forever , for example ) and special attacks . The sounds and the actions might be out of synch at times as well . Also , there's new content , so far , most of it has had to do with Delita's own story . These scenes feel weird : they do explain thoroughly several plot points that weren't explained in the game's first iteration , but they feel a little bit tacked on to me . . . . still , they serve their purpose , to further Delita and Ovelia's relationship , which is an important plot point that was glossed over the first time . Also , some sounds have been changed , most noticeably , the echo in the death rattles was taken out , and , it's not that it sounds cheap . . . but it doesn't sound as cool anymore . Some sounds HAVE been downgraded , like some higher level magic spells . All in all , I don't understand that tradeoff in particular . The good - very interesting re-write of all the dialogue in the game . It was given the Ivalice-treatment , and characters now have a Shakesperian depth . . . just by reading them , you know what their station in life is , whether it be noble or not so . Also , the re-write made some of the plot points way clearer than the first time around . The incredibly intricate plot got a new lease on life , really . It makes me wonder what if they re-made Vagrant Story . . . I digress . So , the animated cut-scenes are beautiful , and the voice acting is great ( not superb , but very good ) . And some people have complained about the fuzzy graphics . Honestly , I see the same pixelated isometric 2 1 / 2 D graphics I saw back in ' 98 . The neutral - so , the gameplay is the same : if you've never played it , it might take a while to get a hang of it . The gameplay is quite daunting for even regular gamers , and some people haven't even played it because they could never get a hang of it . Moreover , once you do get the hang of it , it takes a while to truly master it . Theres two new classes : Onion Knight and Dark Knight . The Dark Knight is a pain to get and is totally worth it ; the Onion Knight might be worth it later on . . . there's also a multi-player feature which I haven't tried out yet , sadly . Odd observation , this time around , the odds favor enemies a lot more often . . . for example , I once cast Haste on myself , with a 97% chance of success . Good as done right ? Wrong . The spell missed . And that's just one example . I've been missing enemies with sure shots all the time , like 85% success rate . And yet , long shots , like 35% hits , happen more often this time around as well . The AI , I feel , is way more goal oriented this time around : enemies will try flanking you or will prefer causing status changes instead of hitting you directly . The archer , which sucked the first time around , is quite useful now , on both sides . All in all , this is a great game , perhaps a bit pricey , considering that Jeanne d'Arc , another great SRPG is out for 10 dollars less . Obviously , two very different games , and , honestly , get both . If you can only get one , get this one . I'm gonna be playing this one for a while . Again .

    • 149   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This review is more or less over this version of the game with its few editions than over the actual stock game that is also available on PSN and PS1 . The game itself is one of my favorite of all time and it is my eyes the standard for tactics games . It has never been topped . This game though has severe lag and sound coordination issues when casting spells or using abilities . After playing the PS1 version for over 100 + hours I am unable to tolerate this . As it is a lot of the spells , especially later in the game , can take a hot second to do . Battles themselves can also prove to be fairly lengthy and the lag just adds to that . The addition of the Onion knight and the Dark Knight are cool and you can also get two new secret characters Balthier and Luso . The translation has also been improved so you can halfway understand the story and the cinematic are pretty nice . The bottom line is this . . . If you have played final fantasy tactics via the PS1 the slowdown may be unbearable in your eyes . However , if you haven't experienced this game before the slowdown may seem like it could be actually intended as my brother who had prior experience with this game didn't really notice or mind the slowdown at all . Despite the lack of additional goodies I really have to recommend this game for buying on the PSN or snagging an old copy on PS1 . Don't pass the game up though ! If you like tactics games then this game is one to checkout .

    • 151   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) I played the PS1 version of this game years ago and it is what got me into the whole SRPG ( Strategy Role Playing Game ) genre . This game is more or less a straight port of the original game , with a multi player mode , remastered cut-scenes , a few extra characters and classes , and a new script . First the Good : The cut-scenes are awesome . In the original version of the game their is one cut-scene in the beginning ( maybe one towards the end , I never finished the game ) . It is nice to see new videos . Second there were some problems with the translations in the first game , and this fixed it . It is also cool to see some extra special characters plus and addition of new classes . One of the stronger points of this game for me was the in depth class system , and the new classes are cool . Now the Bad : Personally , I prefer the old script because it read easier . The new script is much more formal , reads more like Shakespeare , which is great for plays but personally I find not the greatest for video games . And the biggest flaw with this game is the spells . I did play this on the 1000PSP model , but I don't imagine it being any different with the slim . The spells / special skill move PAINFULLY slow . Now for those of you new to the SRPG , you have a number of charters on a map ( normally a grid ) whom you move and attack . All of the attacks have certain area in which they can effect . This genre generally consists of very many maps that can take lots of time to complete . The problem with this game is that on top of an already slow genre , it is even slower . It almost seems as though the PSP has trouble rendering the skills / spells . This makes the game painfully slow . I couldn't even make it through the first chapter of the game . Honestly , with the PS one version available for download on the PSN store that would be a better choice .

    • 160   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) This game is pretty cool . Although you may not be stunned by the graphics , the storyline and content will make you addicted . This game is the best one in all of PSP gaming history so far . . .
    • 162   This review is from : Final Fantasy Tactics : The War of the Lions ( Video Game ) Imagine if everything you wanted to do took 4 times longer than it should take . That's what playing this game is like . All of the special animations slow down to a crawl , and you're left wondering why you paid $40 for a game that came out 8 years ago , but has LESS SPEED . The new dialogue is repulsive , the slow-down is unreal and unbearable , and the new classes are positively worthless in single-player mode ( the dark knight requires mastering 2 jobs and getting job level 8 in 4 others ! you'd finish the game before you got half of that done ) . This is by far the worst remake of a Final Fantasy game I've ever played in my life , and that's saying a lot , because Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my all-time favorite games . So good , in fact , that I can't even bear to give this remake 1 star . If you want to play this game , find the original . Avoid this remake at all costs .

  • not being able to steal Genji gear from Elmdor etc . . Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed re-playing through one of the best games ever made .
    • 079   Anyone that can give this game less than 4 stars doesn't love good videogames .
