    • 001 4  Genuine happiness , or enlightenment , is already within us ; we have only to reveal it . As spring water rushes through open earth , so happiness flows through open lives . - Taro Gold Taro Gold has spent much of his life living overseas . He has traveled to over thirty countries and has lived in Australia , Spain and Japan . This is the second book and larger edition of Open Your Mind , Open Your Life . The author has also written extensively for international Buddhist publications and is currently living in California . Quotes have always intrigued me because they contain condensed wisdom . In just a few words of a good quote , you see the big picture or universal truth . This is a collection of Eastern Wisdom and contains quotes by Buddhist and Eastern thinkers such as Nichiren , Lao Tzu , Confucius , and Mahatma Gandhi . Taro sees these quotes as guideposts . He believes in having an open mind and in illuminating your life's path with wisdom from great thinkers . Taro also includes : The Buddhist concept of the Ten Worlds Short Allegories Short Biographical paragraphs of Historical Figures quoted in this book Longer passages for reflection Common Sense Quotes Universal Truths Eastern Wisdom An Iris represents Faith , Hope , Wisdom and Valor . • 002 4  I had a dream a few months ago in which I discovered that I had wings . Big ones , too , with feathers and everything . There was no question that I could fly . The only problem was learning to _ use _ them ; I kept forgetting where the appropriate muscles were . Well , okay , you don't have to be Sigmund Freud to figure that one out . I mention it here because it's vaguely relevant to one of my favorite lines from this little book . It's a Mongolian saying : Eagles don't chase flies . ( Pause for a moment and roll that one around in your mind . Eagles don't chase flies . Grows on you , doesn't it ? Now see if you can remember how to flex those wings . . . ) This little book is full of stuff like that - - some original to Taro Gold , some collected from many centuries of ( mostly ) Confucian , Taoist , and Buddhist wisdom , all of it designed to give you a stimulating poke right in your atman-which-is-also-Brahman . Some of the sayings will hook you right away . Others will look , at first reading , like outtakes from a motivational seminar . But read it twice : even the ones that didn't look so interesting on the first pass will _ change _ a little the next time through . At any rate , you can skip the ones that don't grab you ; there are plenty that will . ( Do you like Thich Nhat Hanh ? Then you'll probably like the flavor of this collection , which partakes very much of the same gentle spirit . ) It's a nice collection . And it makes a nice gift : I gave a copy each to my two daughters for Valentine's Day this year .
    • 003 4  This richly illustrated book is filled with great insights . I've been interested in various Eastern philosophies like Buddhism , Taoism , Confucius and so on for many years now and I especially enjoy collections of wisdom and rare quotations . This is the best I've ever found .
    • 004 4  This is a brilliant little gem of a book . I have studied Buddhism for 25 years , mostly Tibetan Buddhism , and although this book is obviously not from the Dalai Lama it also captures much of the spirit he teaches - compassion , wisdom , courage . In fact , these virtues are universal and common themes of all humanistic philosphies . Another aspect I like about this book is that it speaks to anyone of any belief system , Eastern , Western , Buddhist , non-Buddhist , everyone . I believe nearly everything in this book even the most devout Christian would enjoy reading and probably agree with , too . Wisdom is wisdom - truth is truth - both wisdom and truth are universal , after all . There are approximately 350 entries in this book , which is the larger volume , all of which I found profoundly inspiring or thought-provoking . Many are subtle yet deep . All are easy to incorporate into one's daily life . About 70% of the entries are from Taro Gold and 30% from great Eastern philosophers such as Shakyamuni Buddha , Mahatma Gandhi , Confucius , Lao Tzu and others . There are also some wonderful and rare Chinese and Japanese proverbs .
    • 005 4  ' Open Your Mind , Open Your Life ' is the best collection of wisdom I've ever found . The enlightening theme is that ' true happiness is within us all ; we have only to reveal it . ' This book is filled with hundreds of simple and inspiring guideposts based on the timeless wisdom of Eastern thought , including my personal favorite : ' The lotus flower blooms most beautifully from the deepest and thickest mud . ' It's compact size allows me to carry it along for those times when I need a little extra inspiration and guidance . One of the most valuable books I've ever bought for such a low price .
    • 006 4  My son gave me this a book as a gift . My first impression was how beautiful it is . The wisdom it contains speaks to everyone , so although it is technically eastern I believe anyone would gain much from it . Truth and wisdom are universal , after all . I have learned so much and been so inspired by this book of wisdom , it is a real treasure . I am buying extra copies to give away to all my friends and family members .
    • 007 4  I was having the worst day at work and went to see a friend who also works in my office and he took this book out of his desk and gave it to me to read . it was the best thing he could have done to cheer me up and give me hope and confidence that I can live happier . whenever I feel down I always open this book up and read a page or two and I feel better right away .
    • 008 4  Open Your Mind , Open Your Life is a simple yet thoughtful guide that I enjoy reading from every day . Not just another daybook , it's practical and uplifting without being preachy .
    • 009 4  I'm a peace officer in NYC and everyone in my precinct loves this book . we keep copies of this book in our station and even in our cars . reading thoughts from it now and then throughout the day always lift my spirits and help me focus on positive ideas . it is a priceless book to me .
    • 010 4  I received this book as a gift and have been giving away many copies of it to my friends and family ever since . It is the highest quality collection of wisdom I've ever seen , and reading through it always helps me feel better . It's incredible that such a large treasure chest of insight could fit into such a physically small book ! Unlike many books of thought that have just a few words on blank backgrounds , this book is beautifully illustrated in full color and holds three or four thoughts per page . Each message is uplifting and profound . It's a great gift , small in size and huge in content .
    • 011 4  I bring this book with me wherever I go , in my car or in my purse . I have an extra copy in my desk at work . I love it so so much - - makes me feel a lot better just to read one thought from it or one page from it now and then in the day . My husband keeps a copy by the bed to read us a thought before we get up each morning which often makes for great conversations .
    • 012 4  I belong to a reading group in my local neighborhood library , and one of the folks in the group suggested Taro Gold's books of wisdom to us . Since then , we always open and close our meetings by reading a thought from Open Your Mind , Open Your Life . I keep a copy at work to start my day off on a positive note as well . Taro Gold's books have become my favorite gift to give to friends for birthdays , graduations , and any time I want to uplift someone's spirit .
    • 013 4  The Buddhist way of thinking naturally opens the mind and life of anyone who practices it . It is a way of being joyful each day , regardless of one's religion or spiritual orientation . This collection of wise sayings embodies the Buddhist way of thinking quite well , without being preachy or dogmatic . It uplifts like a breath of fresh air .
    • 014 4  Sometimes inspirational texts can be a bit overdone and superficious , but I didn't find this book this way . I really like the quotes that were placed together . This book sections itself off into several different areas and then presents you with different thoughts to focus on . Honestly , the best book I have found to help you change your perspectives . This book is so well put together I feel it will make an impact on many different people as they read this . I placed my book on my desk , and encourage colleges to thumb through this one . If you are a fan of Franklin Covey , I find the no nonsense assembly of these inspirational saying to be right on track . I liked this one so well it became stocking stuffers for my family .
    • 015 4  If you've never read any other Eastern-based texts , this delightful little tome of wisdom would be a wonderful place to start . It's a book that I'll re-read again and again , and even my stressed out husband will agree , simply dipping in and opening a page randomly can give comfort , peace and a sense of inner wellbeing that is hard to beat . It's very readable , and includes quotes from Laotzu , His Holiness the Dalai Lama , amongst others . The passages are thought provoking and inspirational , and can be incorporated into any religious belief system . This is one of those books to carry with you , and have at your fingertips at times of stress . I thoroughly recommend this book , to everyone - from teens starting out in life , to our elders - who might benefit from common sense values .
    • 016 4  I bought both the little volume and this new volume of Open your mind , Open your life . I think the world would be a better place if everyone would read these books and take their messages to heart . The ideas in these books have ringing truths that cause you to pause and think . I've given copies to many friends and everyone has felt encouraged by what they read .
    • 017 4  Elegantly designed , succinctly presented inspirational for the gift book crowd ( givers and recipients alike ) , anchored well by Gold , who has successfully cauldroned his personal studies and travel adventures abroad into this warm and wise comfort . Westerners curious about traditional Eastern thought but who thus far have been timid about looking forward in that direction are on safe and sound ground here as the words of Confucius , Mahatma Gandhi , Nichiren and Lao Tzu too bubble gently to the surface . Three hundred wisdoms later ( all of which have been nicely honored by the addition of accompanying , tasteful design elements ) , readers and seekers will magically realize that the thoughts within have also now become the love within - which of course handily replaces the fear now out .
    • 018 4  This book I have on hand for a daily dose . Basically one could say it is a book of advice . The thoughts refesh your soul and even on the worst day a dose of this book will help you get through it . Very powerful . Very insightful . Highly recommended as I don't leave the house without mine !
    • 019 4  This little treasury of wisdom is inexpensive , yet it's packed with hundreds of priceless thoughts you can use every day to enhance your life . Each quote in this collection is a gem , at once practical and thought-provoking . I find the mini edition perfect for portable daily inspiration , and the expanded volume has become my most popular gift among friends and family . This is a powerful book , beautifully presented , and the wisdom contained within speaks to any religion , any age , any situation . I recommend Open Your Mind , Open Your Life highly , any time you want to lift your spirits and refresh your soul .
    • 020 4  My co-worker received this wonderful book as a gift and started reading from it to all of us at our lunch break each day . It has inspired many thought-provoking discussions , laughter , and encouragement . I'm ordering copies now for all of my grown children to share with them the truth and wisdom in its pages .
    • 021 4  As far as collections of wisdom go this book is as good as it gets . I like it so much I've bought 10 copies to give to family and friends . Reading from it always brightens my day .
    • 022 4  This gem of a book is priced to give out like candy canes over the holidays ! Profound thoughts from great Buddhist and Eastern sources beautifully reflect places in the human heart that you may not even have been aware of . This is a richly crafted book as well , with elegant illustrations throughout . Every detail is top notch . It's a little masterpiece of quality and wise grace .

    • 024 4  This collection of wisdom is the best of its kind by far . I have a personal library of books containing quotations and this book has become my favorite over the past year . I read from it every day and have given it to many folks who tell me they now do the same . I start every day with it and I'm a much happier man because of it .
    • 025 4  This collection of words includes not only great quotes from good men but a whole collection of pictures behind to draw you into your meditation . At the same time , I would encourage those who have participated in other religions to look into this book . It puzzles me why Catholics and Christians must keep attacking Buddhism and eastern religious . Indeed they fear even body positions not deemed worthy of God . In this slim volume , Taro Gold has packed full information into a window into the soul . You won't be missing anything . At the same time , I have read most of the quotes you have been listening to for many years , and find them very puzzling and bizarre . They do not seem to mimic the exact translations of Buddhist wisdom or thought , but rather the English translations of them , beautiful , yet profound . Perhaps that's what I like about Buddhism , and eastern religion . Though some of his quotes may be misinterpreted , they are not without character , or mind . The Tao has been treated to one hell of a lot of interpretation here , totally changing the words Lao Tzu said in some cases . But otherwise , it seems to be a perfect translation of the mind of Lao Tzu , and that's good enough to keep you thinking .
    • 026 4  There are sooooo many books like this that combine 100 ' s of quotes and ' guideposts ' to enlighten and motivate us , but this is by far ( and I've read a lot of them ) the best book I've seen in this category ! ! Many of the thoughts in this book absolutely blew me away , it's a fantastic little book ! !
    • 027 4  What a beautiful book Taro Gold has produced . I received a copy as a gift from a friend and enjoyed it so much I gave it away to my sister . I am now going to order more for gifts and to keep myself . Giving this book is a gentle way to encourage people and uplift their spirits .
    • 028 4  I picked up this book kind of by accident as I was shopping in a natural food store . I have never read anything by Gold before but have heard about him . I read this book in an afternoon recently and have re-read bits of it each day since . I carry it with me in my purse to read when I have a moment during the day . The principles are universal and can be applied to every area of life . My life was different the very first day I tried applying these principles . They are simple ; sometimes not easy , but simple . If you wish to gain peace in your life and be more comfortable with yourself , others , and the universe , read this little book and learn to apply its suggestions in your everyday living . This book is on my all-time great list - - I'm going to make sure I'm never without a copy . May it be a blessing to others the way it is to me .

    • 030 4  Open Your Mind , Open Your Life is one of the most moving books written . I received it as a gift from a good friend . As I read the jacket , I immediately felt compelled to read the entire book . It strengthened my ideas and positive beliefs about life . It has the potential to change the way many people may think or feel if they live an open life . The quotes can be applied to anyone's life . After letting friends and family read it , they were immediately attached . I have an uncle who has Parkinson's disease , which is an illness that destroys one's ability to move . This disease affects the lives of many people , including well-known citizens like : Michael J . Fox , Muhammad Ali , and Janet Reno . Once my uncle read one line from this book , he asked me to order copies for him . In addition to ordering for him , I also ordered one for my grandmother and others for my friends . This book can make a positive impact on lives and should be in everyone's book collection . I would like to thank the author for putting out such inspiring literature .
    • 031 4  I am a 48 year old mother , wife , daughter , secretary , etc . . . who was losing touch with reality , close to losing my mind ! Buying this little book has saved me . I carry it in my purse and read it over and over , while waiting in line , waiting on teens , sometimes just during a break , and almost always in the morning . In the mornings I read until I feel at peace and ready to take on the world , again . Thank you Taro Gold for your book .

    • 035 4  This book is a tasty buffet of enlightened eastern wisdom . The quotes and passages will inspire your life and give you ancient wisdom to utilize in your daily journey . Definitely recommended to read and reread .
    • 036 4  This was the first book by Taro Gold I found and still one of my favorite books of inspiration . I have lived in Asia for most of my life and this is truly the best collection of Eastern wisdom and life-changing motivation I have ever found . I have given away many copies to friends and family over the years and will continue to do so , there's no more bang for your buck in inspirational books than this little gem .
    • 037 4  The concise axioms and inspiring words contain in this booklet is practical , useful and profound . I would also like to recommend Emerson Lee's Time - Honored Wisdoms on Wealth Creation , which contains more comprehensive and equally uplifting wisdoms on fruitful living .
    • 038 4  I love this book of wisdom . Each page is filled with quotes that are inspiring and thought-provoking . I turn to a page randomly each day and read from it for my daily guidance . This is my favorite book to give away to friends and family .

    • 040 4  I love this little book ! ! ! I keep buying copies and giving them away . . . It makes me feel good when I give this book to someone as I think , in some way , that I'm helping them to live a better life . It's refreshingly light and easy to read , yet suprisingly profound .
    • 042 4  This review is from : Open Your Mind , Open Your Life : A Book of Eastern Wisdom ( Large Second Volume ) ( Hardcover ) This is a great book !
    • 044 4  I've been reading many books like these lately . I found a few good ones , but this one isn't it . This book seemed to be a bad copy of like minded books . It is unoriginal and phoney in it's attempt at appearing in some way holy . It looks like the author threw this together in like one night by throwing together other peoples works and slapping her name on it . That wouldn't be so bad if it was written well , or if the other works were chosen well , but unfortunately this book falls short . It is a disappointment .
