003 4 Well okay , I agree NINJA SCROLL is a superior product to this , but let's face it , these two products have absolutely nothing in common except that Yagyu Jubei is the central protagonist . Misguidedly titled NINJA RESURRECTION is yet another adaptation of Yamada Futaro's MAKEI TENSHO , filmed umpteenth times already , most recently as REBORN FROM HELL . I personally am tired of this series and I wish Japanese animators could just move on to some other interpretations of the ninja mythology . It was once refreshing to combine the elements of horror / fantasy and jidaigeki action , but the novelty has gone out of it . And why should the Yagyu clan , the OFFICIAL fencing teachers of the shogunate , be promoted to the heroic status all the time ? Their ninja activities were basically those of secret police who go off and assassinate those who dare to resist Tokugawa rule . WRAITH OF NINJA has its heart in the right place . . .
Despite pretentious but informative introduction to historical background , this OAV series plays really fast and loose with Japanese history and culture , even within its improbable fantasy context . The filmmakers appear to harbor hilariously strange notions of Christianity , even more so than the most dunderheaded Hollywood action film's stereotypes of Middle Easterners . And yes , as a reviewer noted below , it was completely against the faith of Tokugawa-era Japanese Christians to commit suicide , as Shiro in the first episode proposes .
Technically , the animation is totally skewered toward style over substance . Character animation suffers a lot compared to the detailed background cels and fluid movement . DVD production is , however , top-notch quality , with easy-to-read yellow subtitles and excellent stereo sound . A.D . Visions deserves some compliments for this , since I have seen MANY anime DVDs that are basically no better than VHS versions , or in the case of , say , dubbed version of DEVILMAN , stinkingly worse .
BTW , Shiro's retainer who betrays him and frames Jubei in the first episode seems to be wearing a coat with Yagyu crest emblazoned on it . . . did I really see that ? He may be revealed in later episodes as a Yagyu agent , thus making Jubei realize that HE was betrayed by his own clan , and turning him into a more sympathetic character . Or so I hope , since he is a total cipher in these two episodes .
001 4 I work in an anime rental shop so i get this all the time . Everyone and their mom loves Ninja Scroll but nobody , and i mean nobody likes this one . Here is why : everbody starts this movie up expecting N . Scroll pt2 . . . when it is NOT the same artist , author , or creator of ninja scroll . The only two things that mislead are 1 . ninja in the title 2 . the main character has the same first name . I am telling you now , THIS IS NOT NINJA SCROLL 2 ! If you are like me and you just want more samurai action with a cleaner art style than ninja scroll , then this is for you . The story hits a cool aspect of christianity in japanese culture and its abolishment and what it leads to . Definately just as gory , fast paced , and samurai as ninja scroll , but in my eyes . . . better than .

Ninja Resurrection : Hell's Spawn was great visually , as always.But I was a little disappointed that the story line wasn't developed enough.And as I am not a big fan of cliffhangers in an anime , I was really hoping to see a huge battle between Jubei and Shiro . I did like the introduction of new characters in the plot.But for the next movie , I REALLY hope that it comes with tha'funk . . . so to speak . . . between Jubei and Shiro.Otherwise , it will be a waste of time.But , I will still watch it . . . .
029 4 The series is incomplete . Sales of Hell's Spawn were not massive in Japan , so . . . the series was cancelled . That's a shame , because it had so much potential as being one of the goriest long-running anime works . The art is pretty bad , honestly speaking , but the gore in the film is so elaborate and intense that I rented the first volume and turned it off midway . . . but I was only 11 at the time , and it was when I saw people get their upper mouth chopped off . The violence is so graphic , someone just may vomit if they are squeamish enough . The plot is not great , and it is also somewhat difficult to follow . The story jumps around from time to time , but it is not completely pointless . The dubbing is not great either , but I can deal with it . The music is beautifully composed . The sounds of slaughter are typical anime fare . Initially , ADV strapped a small tag on the upper right hand corner of the first VHS tape that read , FOR VIEWERS 18 AND OVER ONLY . Well , I saw this in a magazine advertisement , and I thought , Wow , this must be some pretty intense stuff , but I was only 9 or 10 . Now , they just give their highest age rating for appropriateness ( a good move , in my opinion ) . It could have been much better had it not been cancelled . The gore is so intense , you just may not look at anime the same way ever again .

038 4 Okay , okay . . . everyone says that this anime ended SO abruptly , and I have two reasons to prove them wrong . . .
The first , being that this story actually has a different twist , meaning that evil acually wins . . . interesting . . .
The second , the story that unfolds for the main character , Jubei . Ever since he was young , his father forbid him from killing , and now he is actually realizing how right his father was . Now his mind is at war , one side being tempted to kill , and another , the stronger one which wins in the end , is to seek peace without killing .
Along with the excellent animation , this movie has lots of violence , one EXTREMELY graphic rape scene , and disturbing scenes . This anime is DEFINATELY not for kids , so parents , do as the tape says , and listen to the label that says Recommended for mature audiences .
The movie is a continuation of the first one , which the first was a little less violent , but still extremely violent .
All in all , this movie was action-packed , gore and demons around every corner , and not NEARLY as bad as many people make it out to be . . . Enjoy .

I saw this for the bloody perview and for the title ; but this is much more then just a anime it's a work of art . 095 4 Oh man this was THE worst movie I have EVER seen in my life . Please stay away . Titanic had more things going for it than this work of art . I have never fell asleep during a movie but i must have fell asleep about 4 times ( i woke up to see if anything happened besides the whole japanese / christian thing ) this has nothing to do with one of the greatest animes of all time NINJA SCROLL ! So if you like boring BAD ANIME buy this piece of garbage but if you like something interesting buy a documentary about the life of SOIL , thats more interesting !
007 4 . . . Here is my review . Please this is only my opinion so read others before making a final decision .
Animation - The animation is okay I guess . I'm not an aficianado of Anime , so I cant really judge . I'd say its slightly better than a Saturday morning cartoon .
Plot - There are too many holes in Ninja Resurrection to actually call it a story . Its more like a couple of action sequences tied together by an overall plot . A plot that ends in a cliffhanger ! Jubei doesn't save the girl , doesnt win the day , all is not right in the world . Just as things get ugly , END of DVD . This is where I feel cheated . I can handle a bad movie , but this is unfinished , and I think thats total crap . Nothing is resolved at the end of this DVD .
Characters - Jubei seems pretty cool , though he hardly fights anyone other than a bunch of ' red shirts ' . But lets face it , you can hardly call those fights . Typical sequence , Jubei gets jumped by 15 ' red shirt ' ninja's , he flashes his sword in a wide arc , 15 ninja's are dead . The main fight in this DVD actually is in the beginning and it is very comical . I wont go into details , but it is sad .
There are other charcters that get introduced , only to vanish 5 minutes later , never to be heard from again . Jubei's Ninja friends in the beginning are a pretty interesting bunch , but you never hear from them after the said above main fight . It happens again later on when you are introduced to two female fighters . They are there , then gone 5 minutes later . Flip to the back of the DVD box and you will see Jubei flanked by two women and a bunch of Ninjas . Those are the two above mentioned women , and nowhere in the DVD you will find this scene . In fact the two women's only fight occurs during a sparring match where both used wooden practice weapons , not what you see on the back of the box .
I will end this by saying that they did a good job on the DVD box . It looks nice and has a nice description , but it is misleading . Rent this before you buy it .
018 4 Don't be fooled like I was . This company obviously comes as close to stealing ideas as any that I have seen . I saw the Legend of Crystania ( stolen from Lodoss War ) which I admit was good . Once I found out that this was not Manga , i still had high hopes , thinking that this could still be good . It wasn't . Maybe I was just too disappointed at the fact that this was not NS2 that I didn't give myself a chance to like it , but even if i did , it just didn't run that well . There are some nice bloody scenes , but that is all of 5 minutes , and the movie ( part ) itself is only 50 minutes long . This is definately not worth the money , as the whole thing is a lie to get your money . Please don't be fooled . It is very disappointing .
021 4 Resurrection is some of the best anime out right now . A lot of uneducated anime viewers are looking to hard for the old ninja scroll . It is true that Resurrection has a lot to live up to . But watch it with an open mind . The animation redefines the way anime should be drawn . It captures a hip vibe very rare in anime . A tight plot . The first tape was better than the second , but only if you're looking at them as separate movies . Make sure you get the entire series .
045 4 After watching Revenge of Jubei , I went into Hell Spawn , expecting a bit more than I got . The demons were great , the plot was sound . . . the rebirth of Satan on earth . . . Jubei and Musashi were the reluctant heroes , but at that point the film ended . . . . that to me was the huge letdown . . . just as we're getting set for their to be the climactic battle . . . . the film ended . . . Obviously the creators planned for a followup , and I believe it's scheduled for a late 2000 release , but I may be wrong . If you're a fan of swordplay anime , then you should enjoy this for what it is , which is swordplay anime . . . . you will be let down by the ending though . . . .

With an artistic vision , this film is well drawn . However , this is not a slide show . I also have Ninja Scroll , and while buying this I thought this was the second part . But no , don't be fooled . This Jubei is Jubei Yagyu from Samurai Spirits . Sounds good , but don't be fooled with that either . ' Cause . . . Um well I already said it that film is bad . It is too short too . 70 min . While others are more than 140 . . .
What I suggest is don't throw away your money or you'r gonna throw away this film .

The Animation is poor ( almost as bad as he animation from the originial Vampire Hunter D ) , the voice acting was horrible , and the plot . . . well , there was no plot . It was 80 min of pure [ stuff ] . I had to give this movie 1 star because there is no option for no stars . As a matter of fact , this movie owes me a star .

104 4 This is one of the best anime OAV series i have seen . It has action and lots of gore ( including heads cut in half and geysers of blood ) and is set at a good pace . The only thing that could have been better is if it had no story , just Jubei running around killing everything . This is basically a slasher movie , so dont buy it if you dont like blood . But if that doesnt bother you and you like a good action series , dont hesitate , buy it now , in fact , stop reading this and go buy it you're wasting time that you could be using to watching this masterpiece .
008 4 Going against the grain , I'll say that Ninja Resurrection ( not a Ninja Scroll sequel - as many have pointed out - and not meant to be ) was an entertaining look into very loosely translated Japanese culture that has been dashed with other influences as well . Still , this seems to be what bothers many people about it , the fact that a movie might take liberties with handed down legends , salting them with concepts that also involve other esoteric entities while birthing its own tales of a Christlike figure not fulfilling his destiny and being reborn as the son of the devil . I , however , have no such qualms with these types of ideas taking place , in fact encouraging creativity in such matters , nor do I have a problem with the violence that saturated much of the bloodstained movie . So , I accordingly found the movie appealing . Abruptly ended when things were at their worst , mind you , but nice to watch .
The two parts included on this films were not , in fact , that bad at all despite the little speedbumps in the plot that oftentimes do manifest themselves . The first , dealing with an insurrection taking place at the hands of some Japanese Christian Farmers , focuses on a legend that had been past down about one that would come as a deliverer . Still , the message goes on to warn that if his destiny should be blocked and this person weren't allowed to become Christ , he would return as the son of Satan . At a young age a few events transpire to seemingly show who this great deliverer will be and , through the struggles of the greatly outnumbered souls that decide to follow him , a wheel is set into motion , one greased with the manipulation and intrigue , that means to test these words fully .
The second is the culmination of ideas birthed in the first , feeding off of the characters and adding to them , bringing about some additional plot twists in the process . This has some exceptionally strange ideas that are forced into play , asking one to pay attention in order to catch all of the intrigue being birthed . It does have its problems here , however , leaving openings that should have been plugged and ending too soon before anything can be solved , but its still not bad .
If you are looking for another Ninja Scroll , this isn't your film . If you want something without any violence , a traditional piece , or something bulging with new forms of animation , then perhaps you should avoid it . Still , if you want something different and , above all , a bloody type ofentertaining , you might want to check this out . Just be expected to be left hanging at the end .
002 4 Early 17th Century Japan was a particularly grim period . It is marked by the rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate , several abortive efforts to open Japan up to the world and a bloody rebellion by the small Christian minority that led to the exclusion of foreigners from Japan for over 200 years . The Christian rebellion and its suppression at Shimbara was a struggle with few heroes and all too many villains on both sides . ' Ninja Resurrection ' tells a part of the story of those events , combining both history and legend in its telling .
Jubei Yagyu , a historical figure , was sword instructor to the Tokugowa regime , as well as in regular use as a spy and assassin . Therefore , it is no surprise that Jubei was sent to invade the Christian stronghold at Shimbara to weaken the fortification and , if possible , assassinate the leaders of the rebellion . Tokisada Shiro Amakusa , whose followers thought he was the new Christ , was killed , and the rebellion collapsed . The result was a massacre - 37,000 Christians dead at the cost of less than 2,000 samurai .
The prophecy that declared Shiro to be the returned Christ also - redicts that , if frustrated , he will return as Satan . The first part of this DVD tells about Shimbara , and sets the scene for the second part , the incarnation of Satan . Here we have a little pastiche about Yagyu clan home life followed by a demonic sex scene and the rebirth from a woman's corpse of the slain Shiro . Somehow , Shiro's reanimation includes the return of 4 of Japan's most legendary swordmen as demons .
And now comes this DVD's greatest flaw . There is no resolution or conclusion , just an abrupt end . Nor is there any sign of an anime follow up , although there have been several other films ( not anime ) that deal with Jubei's further adventures . Being left cold at a point that feels like the middle of the plot definite has a chilling effect on one's enjoyment . This is a shame , because the artwork and acting in these two episodes really is excellent , and a continuation would certainly have been successful . Beware , the film contains some very adult scenes and an amazing amount of bloody violence .
004 4 Knowing this was in no way related to Ninja Scroll , I went ahead and purchased it based on the good reviews it has gotten from folks who actually liked it . Good for them ; they can watch it over and over .
I found the story - - what there was of a story - - in both of the two shorts to be painfully inconsistant . For example , one historical character that is refered to will not commit suicide ( and is consequently tortured ) due to his Christian beliefs ; however , another character ( likely the most important character ) is about to commit suicide in spite of his Christ-like status when the story ( yet again ) changes direction . No real character development occurs nor does any plot development for that matter .
Now , about that animation . . . Well , if your idea of really slick animation is panning across stills done in a traditional Chinese ( yes , Chinese ) painterly style , then this film is for you . However , if you grade your animation by the fluidity of motion , the creativity of scene , and the life-like character of the fantasy created , I recommend you check out the Brothers Quay Collection . Of course , if you want to stick to the traditional ninja story with excellent animation , there is always Ninja Scroll .
006 4 This is a poor successor to Ninja Scroll . It's not made by the same production studio or director . And even falls during a different time period . The only similarity is the existence of a guy named Jubei . Mediocre animation , fairly good dubbing , excessive violence ( the only plus ) and a weak storyline . Overall , if you're a Ninja Scroll zealot , you'll very likely become annoyed ( if not angered ) by this 40 minute ' introduction ' to an anime series which was never completed .
009 4 Ninja Scrolls had mature artwork , dynamic action , developed characters and a deep story . The violence in Ninja Scrolls was inherent to the story .
Ninja Resurrection has that childish , low detail artwork . The story is VERY weak . The characters have little development ( you barely see Jubei in the second episode ) . The ULTRA , ULTRA violence belongs in something like Legend of the Overfiend - a repugnant anime of sick and twisted proportions . Contrary to popular belief , this show is not for adults . It for violence loving perverts .
I just received this DVD , just finished watching it , and just finished dumping it into my garbage bag . What a disappointment .

To be honest . . It wasnt good at all . . The storyline . . heck WHAT storyline ? ? The images . . * blergh * . . and the ending . . . ? ? WHAT ending ? ? ! ! Ninja Ressurection seemed more like an introduction to a whole new series . . .
After the ' movie ' finished I felt like throwing something at the TV . Thats how bad it was !
011 4 This was not a great anime and definitely not worth your hard earned cash . The historical content was very interesting and practically the only redeeming feature . The rest of the film is an 80 or so minute blood bath that makes little sense . The start of the movie is promising ; Christains are persecuted and they get killed , and it is prophesized that their leader will return as Satan , since he was not able to take his place as the son of God . This is followed by a lot of character development and some more overly gorey fight scenes . Just as the plot gets rolling , the movie ends , leaving the viewer wondering why the heck the just wasted an hour and a half watching .
The animation in this movie was definitely sub-par . It looked sort of like a violent Pokemon . It wasn't horrible , but it could have been done so much better .
I was revolted by the sexual and combat violence in this film ; it was completely over-the-top . I am not against violent anime ( I enjoyed Ninja Scroll , Ghost in the Shell , and other adult animes ) , but this went to a point that was just gross . Children are beheaded , intestines spill out , and women are raped and then killed in a grotesque manner . The creaters of this film should be taught that tasteful and stylistic anime violence is just as effective at story telling as the content of this film .
I am a big fan of ninja and samurai anime , and trust me , there is much better content out their ( for instance anything in the Rurouni Kenshin series ) .
Boy , am I glad I rented this , and didn't spend my hard earned cash on this waste of time .
012 4 Like pretty much everyone else , I rented this one years ago , thinking it was the ninja scroll sequel ( which I loved ) . It's not .
It's a poorly animated ova that looks like the first 3 episodes to an aborted tv series . The story is very disjointed and not really tied up at the end .
The movie is extremely gory and uneccesarily so . I LOVE Berserk , so I'm not on the squeamish side of anime , but this borders on hentai . They kill kids and have an excessively graphic rape scene .
Oh , yeah additionally they openly mock the Christian faith . Again , I'm not easily offended , nor do I claim to be a great moral crusader or anything , but the people who made this one are EXTREMELY biased against western culture . Basically the moral is Christianity is teh evil and turns you into Satan rape monsters . Oh also , despite being set in the middle ages , one of the guys has a rocket launcher . Anachronism , much ?

013 4 When I heard that a sequel to Ninja Scroll was released on VHS , I eagerly waited for its release on DVD . As soon s it was released , I purchased a copy from Reel.com . I was so disappointed with this movie that I returned it the following day ! Thank goodness Reel.com had a no questions asked return policy .
The plot was practically non-existant . The little action that they had was poor . The overall animation was marginal at best . Save your money and time on something more worthwile .

The problem with this show is that it's just so corny , and when it's not lame , it's violent to the point of making you sick . It starts off with ( aw gee , I saw this awhile ago and I'm starting to forget ) something with Christians in Japan being assinated for their beliefs , at least that much is historically accurate
( terrible isn't it ) . So anyway the main guy comes up and , does some lame-o miracle thing and holds up a cross . Then a spot light shines on him ( yes literally a spot light ) and everyone oooohs and ahhhhhs and there's angelic music singing AHHHHHHHHHHH or something . I mean how cheesy is that .
Hmmmmm then there was this part with these two kids later on . They were made as innocent and pathetic looking as possible . They go up to the main guy and are like ah gee mister , u're our hero .

I must also add that I love anything anime involving swords , ninja's , samurai , or demons and gory action ( my friends think I'm demented ) . I think they are absolutely awesome . Amazing how something with all these elements could be so bad . Like I said this show was beyond my level of bloodlust . Above and beyond and to the next city . I mean people's FACES were getting sliced off and thrown against a wall . That's just sick .
020 4 THIS WAS THE WORST ANIME I HAVE EVER SEEN ! . . . if it was possible I would have given it negative stars , as many as I could . It had a boring story which was confusing and hard to follow , as it jumps between times and places with NO explanation whatsoever . Sure , it had a lot of fighting , but it was absurdly graphic , to the point where it wasn't enjoyable because it was so unrealistic ( they would cut off someones arm and the blood would spew like 30 ft and cover an entire room ) . Yes , the centrl character is Jubei , but it isn't even the same one . I would NOT reccomend a purchase but rather checking out blockbuster or downloading it off of the internet . 024 4 The animation is very smooth and the fight sceans are done with style . It is not as good as Nija Scroll true enough but then again what really is ? 025 4 I am a huge fan of Ninja Scroll ! ! ! While the Revenge of Jubei is not directly a spinoff of Scroll , the story is very well written and very interesting . True , the ending is somewhat abrupt and the storyline is a sort of tangent from Scroll , but it kept my interest throughout the movie ( which , being that I'm a female fan , I think you men can appreciate . ) . True anime fans will appreciate this feature . And for those of you that didn't really care for it , Get a Clue ! ! ! ! That's the beauty of Anime . . . it is everchanging , but always on point ! ! !
026 4 This movie was a cheap attempt to make money by milking the hype from Ninja Scroll for all it's worth . The character Jubei depicted here has absolutely no similarities to the original Jubei . The plot moves by without even attempting to develop characters or suspense . The cheapness of this movie is perhaps best reflected in the many still shots of ancient Japanese artistic prints . It seems like that was done to fill up time on the video cassette without having to go to the expense of creating animation . The animation that was present was second rate and not at all comparable to Ninja Scroll
027 4 This is ( I presume ) a comedy . Could have been a good gag on japanime if wouldn't been too harsh and Ninja Scroll haven't been such a neat movie . The story is horrible ( as it was supposed to be ) . The storyline is worthless ( well , they made a point there ) . Characters are hollow and their development is sketchy and jumps as a mad rabbit ( whatever ) . Final fight scene is a total embbarassment although funny . Graphics were taken from Ninja Scroll ( mostly ) . Extra star goes for consistent efforts to embbarass otaku : - ) .
030 4 I remember when this title was first released by ADV . It contained the subtitle , ' The Revenge of Jubei ' . ADV essentially hyped this up as a sequal to Ninja Scroll , sending fanboys out in droves to pick this up without noticing that the only thing this has in common with Ninja Scroll is the fact that they both contain a character named Jubei . Ninja Scroll has Jubei Kibagami while Ninja Resurrection has Jubei Yagyu , a literary character used throughout Japanese folklore . If we are to assume everything with the character Jubei Yagyu in it is a continuation of Ninja Scroll , then I guess it safe to assume that even the video game , Onimusha 2 is a sequal to Ninja Scroll ( OMG I better run out and get it ) . It was so irratating listening to fanboys talk trash about this OAV collection when it came out . This is nowhere near as cool as Ninja Scroll . or , Ninja Resurrection doesn't faithfully represent the character we saw in Ninja Scroll . Even Anime publications reviewing the film were falling for AD。's ruse by constantly refering to this as a sequal . I don't blame the fans or anyone else other than those responsible . ADV Films . I don't know for sure , but a hunch tells me that the original title of this OAV series isn't even Ninja Resurrection . It sounds way too domestic and it played right into AD。's plan to release this as a continuation to Ninja Scroll .
Looking at the OAVs themselves , it really isn't that bad . Yeah , the story is mostly pretty lame and doesn't really go anywhere , but I have a hard time giving a bad review to an anime that has non-stop ninja destruction . Look at this as sort of a guilty pleasure .
As a interesting historical side note : This battle in this story was based on an actual event in Japan's history . Severly outnumbered and losing soldiers constantly , the Tokugawa Shogunate sent in TEN ninja as a last resort in hopes of aiding the samurai against the Christian rebels ( ninja were usually used as a last resort in battle only in the most desparate situations ) . This team of ten ninja actually flew into the middle of the battle by use of hang gliders . The result was a massacre . Those ten men turned the tide into the Shogunate's favor and essentially won the battle .
031 4 Many people confuse this release as being the sequel to the brilliant Ninja Scroll . This is not the case . Firstly , the featured hero in Ninja Scroll was named Jubei Kibagami ; Ninja Resurrection's hero's nome is Jubei Yagyu . Secondly , each film has a completely different writing and animation team , with Yoshiaki Kawajiri directing Ninja Scroll , and Yasunori Urata directing Ninja Resurrection . Many people make the mistake of comparing the two films as successor and predecessor . Please don't be one of them !

Louie Rune Soldier is a four-issue manga series . The anime and manga share some stories , and the manga has some additional standalone middle stories not on the DVD . Omake includes a few color pages and a few four-panel gag strips of the author's suffering when creating the manga . While the manga's just as good as the anime , I should mention that the complete anime boxed set is * cheaper * than the manga . This set costs less than the four manga volumes , and contains the twenty-four episodes of the entire series .
036 4 Comparatively speaking of both volumes as a single entity , Ninja Resurrection is a quite enjoyable film with good potential . Though it has no correlation whatsoever with the actual movie Ninja Scroll , it is still able to hold its own to a certain degree . The violence and action in these two volumes is sparse and often spasmodic , making it pretty anticlimactic . The story itself unfolds pretty slowly , and even may leave most viewers bored . I suppose my main gripe with this movie is not so much its lack of action , but its lack of a climactic ending . Though this movie is meant to end the way it does to imply that the forces of evil actually win , I do believe a final battle between Satan's spawn and Jubei would have made this film much more enjoyable and entertaining . Even had this been omitted , it could have possibly been atoned by intensifying the action in the other parts of the movie to lead up to the downfall of Christianity in the end of the movie . Aside from the actual movie itself , I do not recommend that anyone purchase this or the second volume simply because it is a rip off to have to pay nearly $60 for two DVDs that consist of movies running 50 minutes each . Overall , these volumes are alright for what they are , however had they been combined into one theatrical release with an actual conclusion to lead up to the ending that was presented , it would have been a great anime .
039 4 When i bought this , i thought it was the sequel to Ninja Scroll . As is said in all of the other reviews , it is not . The plot to this movie dosn't make a whole lot of sence , and is a bit complicated for the length of each piece . The only real redeeming factor about it is the great action , and the gore . Rent it first , and if you like it buy it , but its probably not worth the cash .
042 4 Ninja Resurrection : The Revenge of Jubei tells the first part of the story of the Christian uprising in Japan , against the Tokugawa shogunate , who saw Christianity as a threat . Among the Christians there is born a saviour ; sort of like Christ himself , according to prophecy . However , within that prophecy lies another prophecy ; if the Saviour doesn't fulfil his destiny , he'll be reborn as Satan .
True , the story does sound intruiging , and it is based loosely on historical fact , but , especially for someone like me who can't stand senseless violence and ridiculous sexual acts , it fails to make a serious impact . The story is plodding while it sets the scene , with a brief history lesson and the introduction of Amakusa Shiro ( the prophesised Saviour ) , and at the end , with the battle scenes and Shiro's fall from grace , it degenerates into an orgy of killing . In a way , however , it may have been the creator's intent ; perhaps a comment on the ugliness of war ?
Still , this is anime that non anime fans probably imagine when they ridicule the medium . A passable storyline that drowned in too much blood .
043 4 Okay , so this is part one of a two-part OAV . I was pretty much bored with the story during the first 20 minutes and then repelled by the amount of gore and torture during the next 30 minutes . Then , just as I thought things were going to get cool , the credits roll . . . The dubbing was okay for the most part . If decapitation , gore and torture are your thing , then , this anime is for you . But if you're like me , there are better ninja anime ( uh . . Ninja Scroll ) to see instead of this .
044 4 Ninja Resurrection : Jubei's Revenge has nothing to do with Ninja Scroll which seems to be a major misconception about the film . It's another film on the legend of Jubei Yagyu which is akin to the legend of Robin Hood in English lore . In this film the Shogun of the area wants to destroy Christianity in his realm , which results in a ' Jesuslike ' man being born , and coming into power . Jubei is sent to stop this man / being , which leads to an even larger scale battle against pure evil . On it's own the film was enjoyable , and despite what some people think , it is the beginning of a series , and it did have a somewhat tidily drawn up ending .
046 4 First thing ; This got NOTHING to do with Ninja Scroll , even if they have used the same name for their character Jubei . And another thing ; This movie DESERVES its 18 yers or older rating , because there are , as in many ninja animes , extreme violence all over the place . The plot is good , the speech is good and the pure drawing quality is excellent . One thing that could be a good thing , but isn't , is that this is just the beginning ; and when i say just the beginning i MEAN just the beginning . There isn't an ending in this video . Damn . This is just Part 1 and 2 out of God knows how many . But , it's worth buying if you think it's cool with ninjas and samurais and alot of swordplaying ( I do ) .

Infact this story contains characters from actual Japanese history - Yagyu Jubei Musashi Miyamoto were apparently real , as was the clamp down on christianity by the shogunate ( many a christian was crucified upside down ) . This film is actualy much darker than Ninja Scroll . . and its really very good . Only problem being that its the beggining of a series which was abandoned and never made ( so Im told )

Yet with Ninja Ressurection , no this is not a sequal to Ninja Scroll , ADV Films brings us a series of epic proportion . The detail to histroy is a nice touch on the series and the story line is stronger then that of Ninja Scroll . Where does this seem to fall short ? Mostly in animation , which is good don't get me wrong but it is a bit rusty compared to the animation quality of Ninja Scroll . I will also say that events in this first installment , such as why Jubei has a patch on his left eye , are explained in volume 2 of the series Ninja Ressurection : Hell Spawn . For all the flaws though in this title it is still a strong anime that is worth worth seeing if you liked Ninja Scroll .

They should also check the running time . It sure seemed shorter than 50 min . They should have just put parts 1 and 2 on one tape but they were greedy . Don't buy this video thinking you'll get a good storyline as in Ninja Scroll . The storyline didn't grab me or hold my interest . I won't rent or buy part 2 because I don't think it would be worth it . Borrow the movie from a friend if he has smashed it already . The animation is decent and there is a lot of blood and gore near the end . But a good anime must have more and this does not .

053 4 I am a huge fan of anime , and have been since the days of the early Ranma 1 / 2 ( yappapa yappapa eenshannten . . . ) . When I first picked up the original Ninja Scroll movie , I was enthralled by it . masterful animation , incredible plot , and superb dialogue . So , naturally , I expected this to be as good , if not better . I was utterly dissapointed with the quality of the anime . The animation was by no means as good as the first , and the over-dramatic score in the goofiest places proved to make it even cheesier . I was really really dissapointed in the plot . I like Ninja Scroll because it focuse solely and completely on the mideival japanese period , a preiod wich intrigues me . This glorified the passage of Christianity into Japan to an extent wich almost made me cry . . . The fact that they could possibly pass this off as the return of a ledgend ( as the ad told me ) appauls me . honestly , I was po'ed with it .

There are no characters from Ninja Scroll present.If fact this Jubei doesnt even have the same last name ! After watching though , the movie is fairly good . The animation is a little stiff and nowhere near as good as Ninja Scroll , but oh well . The dubbing is commendable . Definitely see it , you can do worse . Be warned though it does have extreme violence and some anti-christian setiments .

The beginning was a little slow , i still fast forward through the history lesson in the beginng . I might have let all that slide if the movie was actually good but its . . so bad . . the worst part is there is no conclusion . it just ends very abruptly during a very violent scene that leaves you feeling like . Whaaa ? ? Beware .

Now having said that Resurrection does follow the exploits of a charater who is in fact Jubei Yagyu based on the historic Japanese swordsman and is not Jubei Kibagami the protagonist of Ninja Scroll . It would seem that Jubei and his crew have been hired to take down a group of Christians who are holding up in Shimabara with bloody results . The second episode is as equally bloody as a dark prophecy comes to fruition .
This anime fuses historical events and unrelenting action . The animation isn't half bad and the story line is coherent . This is not for those of you who are squeamish at the sight of gore since there is a great deal of it ( the rape scene comes to mind ) you might want to think twice if you are offended by such things . Not to mention the subject matter concerning Christianity might strike a nerve with some people . The only real major flaw is that it is only two episodes long and there is no resolution to the conflict . The reason for this is supposedly because of the subject matter and how it may have received a negative reaction from most western countries . Still if you like good action , a nice story , and have an hour or two to kill then pick this up at your local rental place before you buy .

Man , this movie stinks . I've been watching animation for a long time , study Ninjutsu , Japanese History , am a born again christian . I have to tell you this flat out has poor execution in the following elements that they present .
For example . Jubei , which was hired by a Shoguns to assassinate a character in the movie makes no sense . Ninja's and Samurai are on opposite sides of the field . Samurai hate Ninja , fear them and follow different codes of honor . The ninja sword arts are unknown to the samurai . Ninja are banned in the society of Japan . If you don't believe me , read a book by any real Ninja master .
The story sequences was annoying to follow :
Its fine to be different , but make things believable , why does Jubei get hired by a Shogun ? Why would a Man become Son of Christ and then the Devil ? Why does someone in the movie betray the whole village ?
The animation and drawing was the cheasiest even if it was daily cartoon , but it was a feature film . The drawings were undetailed and throw away drawings . The story was written like a 2 - 3 hour epic , but ended abrubtly , rushed . The film had minimal character appeal , artistic quality , and wasted camera angles . Sometimes the drawings had just 2 colors and no details . The voice overs were boring , and did I mention the artwork [ was not very good ] ?
I can draw better with my left hand . ( I am right handed . Heck , I learned to draw upside down and with my eyes closed ) , ( I learned this In drawing fundamentals ) .
I liked Ninja Scroll . I disliked Ninja Ressurection for everything it was .
Fine , Go ahead and see it . This film will tell you what NOT to do in when producing animation , or telling a story and why you need to practice life drawing .
096 4 Contrary to popular belief , this IS the sequal to Ninja Scroll . Of course it won't have the same story , characters or villans , the only person from Ninja Scroll that wasn't killed was Jubei ! This is simply the story of some on else , not Jubei .

Overall it better than the first one but still didn't convince me this is a verygood series , hopefully the next volume will turn out to be better .

This is the first part of a larger story and leaves you with a . . . To be continued at the end which was rather unsatisfying . Perhaps if they had played the story to it's conclusion it would have earned that 5th star , but Ninja Scroll fans should still enjoy it . The story revolves around the Shogun's attempt to eradicate Christianity in Japan in the 1600 ' s . Jubei returns as a warrior sent to stop the rising of a man proclaiming himself the Son of God . Unknowingly Jubei may unleash a greater evil on the world . But , alas it appears we have to wait for the next movie in this series to see if the Prophecy is fulfilled .
The action is fast paced and the story moves well , the only drawback being the short running time and the feeling of You mean that's all there is ? ! ? Still well worth the time spent .
100 4 I really did not like this DVD . I felt ripped-off to tell you the truth . Maybe because I had such high expectations . The violence is high , and yes there were a couple of ' naked time ' scenes ( with apolgies to Dana Carvey ) , but I came away from this anime feeling empty . First , on the VHS , the box said that it was Jubei from Ninja Scroll . Not so . This is the classical / mythical Jubei that is told of in legends . Kinda like Musashi . And , it is not the Samurai Showdown Jubei , despite the fact that they share the same name , and have an eyepatch . While Showdown modeled their characters ( up to part two at least ) after their historical counterparts , NInja Resurrection did none of this . THey just took the names and ran with it . Final Diagnosis : Not Recommended to anyone .

That is NOT Jubei ; jeez , he doesn't even use his fighting technique that's EVERYWHERE in Ninja Scroll and in the anime series ( which is far better than Resurrection could ever be ) . 106 4 I just got started watching anime . . . ive never seen ninja scroll . . . . but i know that this was never meant to be a sequel anyway . But the story is pretty good and so is the animation . But the ninja rocket ship and rocket launchers ? . . . . WTF is that ? ! . . This is supposed to be feudal Japan ! ! O well . . . hahaha . . . still damn good .
Would have gave it 4 if it werent for the rocket ship which about ruined the whole feel of the movie ! ! ! ! !
107 4 The action and animation are great ! ! And the characters are almost as good as the characters in Ninja Scroll . And for the last time : this is not the continuation of Ninja Scroll . Now , if you like kidstuff anime ( who always making funny faces ) theres Kenshin and Record of Lodoss War . But if your looking for great action + violence this is definitely the video for you ( I would also recommend Ninja Scroll which has a great story ) . The only thing that I dont like in this video is it has a sequel . Thats why I give it 4 stars .
108 4 I enjoyed it , I took it for what it was - a good action flick . Maybe people were actually offended by the religious themes in the movie ? Maybe people bought this DVD thinking that it was Ninja Scroll 2 and are mad about that ? Who knows . . .
This DVD has a lot of entertainment value and I want to see the rest of the series when it comes out .
109 4 if your looking for an action movies with alot of blood and sword play , this is the movie for you . lot of none stop action and intense stories line and a little x rate on some part but all in all its is a good movies . recommended to those ninja and samurai hardcore fans . .
113 4 This piece of junk is nothing compared to its predecessor . The only way it relates to ninja scroll is that Jubei the main character Ninja scroll is in it . Jubei is a completely different character and not nearly as cool as in the previous movie . Trust me I may not be very descriptive on this review but dont buy this unless you have to . TRUST ME SERIOUSLY . IF you just want an anime get , Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust , Princess Mononoke , Akira , Ninja Scroll ( OF COURSE ) and Spriggan . These ones youll need to add to your anime collection . This movie is very very gory . You got internal organs popping out when ever theres a fighting scene . Always you see like woman get raped .
090 4 Not to say that this anime is a masterpiece . Absolutely not . In fact , this anime is far from the definition of masterpiece . But , it's better than most animes of this genre that I've seen .
The characters are not spectacular , and show very little development . Jubei is pretty cool , but is shown vaguely in both episodes of the OVA . Shiro Amakusa , the so called , New Christ , is shown more often than Jubei , and has a horribly disturbing death . He dies pleasuring a woman . Musashi Miyamoto seems to be a rival of Jubei's who lives in the mountains and draws pictures , but other than that you don't know too much about him .
The animation in this DVD is very sub-par . In the first episode , much of it is static and many of the people have absolutely no eyes . But the artwork and animation details near the end prove this anime has something going for it . The second episode has much better animation and dynamic camera angles with alot more character development and an emphasis on the evil guys . It's almost hard to believe that the second episode is even in relation to the first in terms of animation .
There are several perverted aspects of this movie , such as the doing the dirty thing in the church scene and making the girl go * pop * scene . But , scenes like this ( ok , only one scene ) were in Ninja Scroll also , and that is poked at less than this for being perverted . Plus , if you're mature enough you can look past the aspects of those scenes and learn to like the action and characters in the series .
If they ever start making the third episode , expect alot from it . After the first two episodes , the series can't really get any worse . The main reason people hate this series was the advertising of the sequel to Ninja Scroll , which now has been taken off of the boxes . So why are you people still complaining about this anime in relation to Ninja Scroll ? You should appreciate this anime for what it is .
014 4 Which isn't to say it's necessarily bad , though I guess I'd describe it as such .
It's violent , gory , includes one or two completely extranneous sex / rape scenes , and doesn't really conclude like a completed work should . This was just a purchase on a whim based on the art and the back cover info . Sadly , for me it just didn't live up to its potential to be a good anime . Ican't give it more than 3 stars . 2.5 would be more accurate . I'd call it slightly sub-par , saved only by its action sequences , really . . . Even those are a bit over the top bloody . But some people might be into that . ; o ]
NOT for kids . Honestly , not really sure who it * IS * for ?

015 4 I think most would agree that this anime is rather demented - but also unique , and ultimately . . . alluring . Its dementia is thoroughly entertaining .
It also boasts one of the most impressive scores in any animation !
A must see if you like things that are unusual .
There is only one big problem - it is INCOMPLETE !
This is a two part OVA , but it seems fairly obvious that it was intended to be at least a four part series ( when viewed together forming one epic length film ) . It certainly needs at least two more parts to finish what has been brought up in the first two . As far as I know it has never been finsihed , and it does not appear that it will be . . . ( if anyone knows of a completion , do write about it )
A shame really , as this would have been a real one of a kind bit of work .
040 4 if you've got alot of anime already and you like ninjas enough to want some nice gory ninja action i'de deffinetly reccomend this one to you . if your not into slaughter and ninjas rent it , no matter what its an ok anime . Check out Wrath of the ninja and Ninja scroll ( ninja scoll is not a prequel to ninja resurrection ) first though .

111 4 If your a Ninja Scroll fan this ain't the sequel . I own this DVD because i made that mistake , but let me tell you I DON T REGRET IT ! ! It may not be the sequel but in my eyes its ranked right under it , and I've seen both ninja scroll and this . It has the quality of Ninja Scroll Action except its more gory and has more nudity ( including a rape scene ) . The only thing that disappointed me was how it ended , it left u thinking is that all ? but lucky they going to have a continuation of it and i'll gonna get that too . So even if your a Ninja Scroll fan , i still recommend it , i don't think you'll be disappointed , it won't match ninja scroll but it's JUST AS GOOD ! ( just better then Ninja scroll ) hehe
097 4 Ninja Scroll is my favorite Japanese animated movie . This movie , however , has nothing to do with Ninja Scroll . It would have been nice for ADV to tell us this . To be honest I did like the animation and the last 10 to 15 minutes of the tape are really good , but that's it . The rest of the movie stinks . . . . BAD ! This movie has to have one of the most boring and slow-moving story lines I have ever had the misfortune to experience in my life . It claims to run for only 50 minutes , but I felt like I sat through Titanic by the time any action gets going ( the last 10 to 15 minutes I was talking about before ) . My advice is watch Ninja Scroll again and stay away from this movie .
041 4 I sorta expected alittle more fighting in this one but there wasn't though the first scene was cool.I thought it was okay but there was one problem I don't think it was right when that chick was ripped open.My personal opinion is it was a great anime to stay up late with your Girlfriend ( Or boy friend ) to scare them
062 4 Knowing that this was NOT the sequel to the infamous Ninja Scroll I reluctantly rented this at blockbuster video , which was one of the smartest things i have done . This movie is a complete waste of money and time . There is absolutely NO character development , poor story line , and even the supposedly main character is only seen at the end . This movie is a disgrace to have Ninja Scroll tied in with the cover . If i wasted $3.00 on renting this , i feel sorry for those who bought it . My advice to my fellow anime fans is , avoid this movie at all cost .
105 4 This is the kind of anime you throw in and impress your friends who believe anime too fruity . Too much gore ? Who are you people ? It was wonderfully vicious ! The hardcore action is some of the most intense I've seen in OAVs . Great entertainment.Only thing that holds this one back is its not finished . It ends at a great sequence where the supernatural antagonists are slaughtering hundreds of innocents in different stylish ways . Here's hoping for episode 3 !
005 4 The animation was very good . But the story was hard to follow . But when the fighting scenes started to get me into it , the movie just stoped and said to be continued it is only 45 minutes long . I don't reccomned this video unless you get all of them .
037 4 Ok , this had the best animation I've ever seen , but what the hell is going on ? ? ? I never knew there were rocket launchers and rocketships in Feudal Japan ! ! Man , is the historical accuracy bad . This was a complete waste of 40 minutes of my life .

075 4 I thought that it was good that they put in new characters like the leader of the anti-Christain army , young Christain leader who was resurected as the Devil , and his evil little helper , and Jube's new followers that help him along the way . I also liked the death , destruction , and lots of gore . I reccomend this movie , and if you havent seen this movie you should ! ! ! !
