How To Draw Manga Volume 21: Bishoujo Pretty Gals (How to Draw Manga)

  • 1 . Bishoujo character drawing theory : This chapter will teach you to draw the face ; eyes , hair and expressions concerning the eyes ( shut eyes , crying eyes etc . ) One of the best chapters , the part on the eyes is superb ! The part on the jaw line , however , isn't very helpful and requires a lot of practice . 2 . Bishoujo Bodies : This chapter is only useful if you already know how to draw bodies . It has useful hints and tips , such as how to make the perfect slim waist , drawing breasts , the back , girls with broad or narrow shoulders , etc . However , it does not start with basics , like how to break the body down into cylinders , which is a problem . 3 . Situations and Techniques of Expression : I don't particularly like the style of drawing in this part as it is less cute and more realistic . It covers putting on / taking off clothes , taking bathes or showers , characters wrapped in sheets and sleeping poses ( the best , cutest part ) , underwear , negligee and kimono's ( yukata ) . Note that shower and bath scenes can be used for girls in a swimming pool or in the rain . This section is neat as it shows you how kimonos are worn ! 4 . Every Day Life Bishoujo : This chapter covers all sorts of popular Japanese characters ; maids , nurses , schoolgirls , and accessories like hats , glasses and ribbons . It has one page on curly hair , but only shows different styles of curled hair , not how to draw curly hair . 5 . Out of This World Bishoujo : The best part of the book ! This part will show you how to draw nekos ( cat girls ) , mermaids , fairies , winged girls ( a detailed , 4 - page section ) bionic and cyborg girls . The cutest characters are in this part ! Also , you learn how to draw chibi girls , and how to turn characters into chibi characters . Note : starting from the third chapter , every page has a small chibi girl in the corner . 6 . Learn From the Masters : The other best part ! This part has six complete works , all of which are very cute yet very different . The author shows you the original sketch , and what you can learn from these pictures . My favorites are Elf Moment and Ice Fairy . This a must-have for any manga collection . BUY IT NOW ! ! !
    • 001 4  This is an excellent book , I love it ! The only setback is the nudity ( you will see nipples ) , which is important for the section on how to draw the body , but otherwise not necessary . Anyway , the adorable and very diverse characters will captivate you and turn you into an instant manga fan if you aren't already . There are six chapters : 1 . Bishoujo character drawing theory : This chapter will teach you to draw the face ; eyes , hair and expressions concerning the eyes ( shut eyes , crying eyes etc . ) One of the best chapters , the part on the eyes is superb ! • 002 4  This book seems odd to Western Eyes - a huge amount of ( good ) pictures and examples , mixed with some advice . However when you understand that the art and the advice go together , and that the core of the book is see this example ? Now shut up and practice it , then you can get quite a lot out of it . There's a lot of good tips organized into sections - but don't expect a lot of handholding . Instead expect a few pictures , reading advice like ( raise the eyelids like this for this effect ) and then picking up your pen and drawing . You'll get advice on faces , eyes , hair , different styles of clothes , and even exotic pretty girls like angels and the omnipresent catgirls . I myself , an amateur artist , got a great deal out of this book - it WON'T start you from scratch , but it will give a student good advice .
    • 003 4  This book is the best How To Draw Manga book I have , and considering how many I have , that's really something to say ! I really liked this book because it explained to me how to draw all the basics , small details , clothing , and abnormal girls ( like mermaids , animal girls , chibis , angels , mech , etc ) . It even shows different bishoujo themes in the book ( like nurses , school girls , etc ) . Another thing that amazed me most was that it had all the basics of drawing bishoujo . You can call me weird , but the other book I was going to buy , Techniques for Drawing Female Manga Characters , lacked even the simple basics this book had , so it was either buy that book and a second one , or this book . I chose this book ; besides that one had too much information on anatomy . I also recommend How to Draw Manga : Bishoujo Around the World .
    • 004 4  I got this book second in my collection , when I was only starting out . It pushed me along to where I am today.Of course , that isn't very far , but I am still working , and it is still helping . I find that every time I look in this book , I find something new and get alittle bit better . This book showed many different eye variations . Standard eyes , up-turtned eyes , and droopy eyes . Crying eyes , jaw-lines , and other things to help with faces . Next came the bodies . Hikaru Hayashi has done a wonderful job showing how curves and shoulder width can change the mood of the piture . There is some nudity in this section , but that should be expected in a book about the female body . The section on drawing the breasts may seem offensive to some , but I found it helpfull . There was a section on everyday life and clothing of an average bishoujo . Such as different school uniforms . I warn of nudity in this section . The girl standing in the shower's whole body is seen , and is the only piture on the book with full detail on everything . A warning on this . There are out-of-this-world bishoujo . This includes fairies , mermaids , girls in fur , cyborgs , and more . There is so much more in this book , but I recommened buying the book and finding it for yourself .
    • 006 4  This book is very thick and content-rich , especially for the price . However , I do not think this is a beginner's book by any means . If you are looking for a book to break down the form into simple shapes , this isn't it . However , as someone who is familiar with illustration , the book is very inspiring , especially the sections on hair and eyes , which provide you with a way to customize your own characters . Although other reviewers seemed to take issue with the fact that there was nudity in the book , it isn't tasteless . As someone who has studied art at the university level , it's not exactly a shock to find nudity in a book which teaches people how to illustrate the female form . In fact , I found the figures and poses extremely helpful for fashion illustrations of lingerie and form-fitting clothing . If cartoon nipples offend you , this might not be a good book for you . I think the book is a great deal for the price , and has a lot of inspirational imagery and ideas for people who enjoy drawing manga , or even fashion illustrators looking to add something different to their work .
    • 008 4  This book is great . It teaches you the basic techniques of drawing manga . It has a great part on drawing power suits , mermaids , angels , chiby characters , cat girls , and more . I suggest if you want to learn how to draw manga you buy this book .
    • 009 4  This book is in a word , amazing . It has great sections on detail and fine points , yet can help any average artist . It contains lots of great pictures to back up its instruction . I loved the section at the back that was all about drawing abnormal gals ( mermaids , angels , etc . ) . This book can give the best of comic illustraters tips or improve a newcomer . I recommend this book for anyone 12 and up ( due to small amounts of nudity ) .
    • 010 4  How to Draw Anime is a good learning tool for anyone who wants to start drawing anime . It goes into details about how to draw the face , body , and other trace parts , to show the best example of a bishojo . In each step it tells of how to do the part and gives a well-drawn example . But some things are left to be desired . There are no sections on the most intimate details , such as the feet and hands . Plus you need to have some prior illustrating techniques to really understand this book . And in certain parts it goes into too much detail ( I think the lingerie part should have been taken out ) . Buy it if you need to learn how to draw in this style . But do some research on the subject first .
    • 011 4  A lot of reviewers said that basic drawing skills were recommened . Well , more than basic . You need to know how to draw the body . Period . I bought this book in hopes of learning female anatomy a little better , but they don't nesscessarily have that . However , they have tips , tricks , and how the body should be shaped . They help with angel wings , anthro people , how to take off clothes ( this is where you need to beable to know how to make an intermediate or advance body ) . It helps you with eyes , and the poportions of the face . Not that much on hair though . So , this book pretty much is just a refrence book if you need help with mecha , anthro , angel , and mermaid people . Or overall bishoujo . x.X ;
    • 012 4  This book really helped me out , it has alot of diffrent ways of showing the body . They even show elfs , warriors , cat / people - which are people with cat ears , tails , paws and other cat like features . I really enjoyed this books and it really helped me with drawing the manga style bodys . They also give you great detail on faces - eyes , hair , Expressions . I suggest you buy this book even though there are some nude pictures - Its is the human body so it is no big deal as long as you are old enough to understand that .
    • 014 4  This is the best manga book for drawing girls ! ! ! Its really good ! ! It has every thing from hair to clothes to expressions to body . . . . . . well u get the point . Instead of having just three different eyes to copy off of , there is a section on the basics of the eye so u can make ur own ! ! ! It tells u everything ! ! ! The only set back is nudity .
    • 016 4  I agree with many of the others that this is not a beginner's how to book , but it has a lot of great examples to use if you are interested in improving Manga drawing technique . There is a wealth of examples in the book , to include chibi figures - squashed , childlike figures . Again , the drawback is that there is very little step-by-step done , so an absolute beginner who has no experience with proportions and form may not like this book as much as I did .
    • 019 4  I hope I can write a reveiw of this book in less than 1000 words ! This is a great book for manga , the out of this world part is awsome , especialy the aminal / person thing , that helped me think out of the box . A lot of my freinds say it's sick and wrong because of some of the naked shots . . . . but it wouldnt be as helpfull if it didn't have that part . over all , this really helped me in my drawings . It helps if you have slight experience , it will make you perfect at drawing girls in what ever environment you need ! even if you're an expert , this book can still help .
    • 021 4  This book is pretty good.I got this on my birthday last year and thoguht I should write a review for this . The book teaches how you could draw the faces and it explains about jawlines . This book is really great on explaining how to make different types of eyes and what kind of expression it gives off to the viewers . ^ . ^ It's great that they also talk about how to balance the body proportion and shows varies of body types . Small chested , slim , and toned bodies. They also explain parts of a yukata and how it is worn on = ) Then it goes on how props such as eyeglasses on characters shows their personality . It is great that they show different angles of clothing and hats. And last of all , they show how to draw angels , fairies , and cat-girls ! The bad part of the book is that there's too many nudity when most aren't needed.there's also a part where they show how to remove underwears 0.0 is that really need ? It's quite simple like taking off pants.I found the wrinkles in blankets and cloths were kinda helpful but it didn't explained how to draw them ! Only tells you where to put them : / Other than that , I think it could have done better and added more but than again , we will have to pay extra money for extra pages in the book & #62 ; . & #60 ; But it's still a good ook and I think people who wants to draw pretty females in poses or drawing different kinds of females , would find this insteresting and helpful ^ _ ^
    • 022 4  I think this book is really useful when trying to draw faces , and constructing poses . Hayashi really outdid herself with this book , and i recomend this books to newbees and pros alike . This is an overall good book , and i use it often ! !
    • 024 4  This review is from : How To Draw Manga Volume 21 : Bishoujo Pretty Gals ( How to Draw Manga ) ( Paperback ) I'm not an expert mangaka , so I couldn't really use some of the things in this book , but even so , my art has improved dramatically . I still can't figure out the nuances of the poses , but the proportions of my characters , and the clothes that they wear are much better . Even if you are new to manga art I suggest this . WARNING : Naked women in sexy poses . Not a good idea for little kids .

    • 026 4  This is a great book for learning how to draw manga girls . Not the best for ideas on actual characters or outfits , this book goes more into HOW stuff works and lays over , and how the body itself is formed , which is tremendously helpful anyway . I recommend it to fans of manga and anime .
    • 027 4  It's not one of my top favorite How to Draw Books I have , but I still love it quite a bit . It helps to get your characters down in the way you want to and it also has things that many other books like this don't . Next to my favorite Occult and Horror and Girls Life Illustration File it's one of the best out there .
    • 028 4  Well , I bought this book recently and I love it . It shows you everything you need to know form head to toe . I think that all those crazy drawing people out there shoud definently go buy this book . It's worth the money .
    • 029 4  This book was very well done . It gave good examples of different types of Bishoujo . I wasn't too thrilled about one part of the book on how they did ' chibi ' style , but it still did give some good pointers . Some parts I wasn't too sure why they even put it in there . After all , how many people really want to draw a shower scene ? However , it was definately worth my money . It gave detalled descriptions of different types of Bishoujo and gave good examples as well . I'm not the best artist around and this book really helped me realize some of the horrible mistakes that I had been making on my drawings . This book is very good and I would highly recomend it to anyone , wiether you are a beginning artist or an experienced one .
    • 030 4  I think this is one of the very best books on drawing I have ever seen . Still one is always searching for inspiration and pretty girls are always a joy to draw . What I love the most is the incredible varity of poses and angles the Artist included in this book . Taking your time and working through the illustrations , a young artist will certainly master the female figure from any point of view s / he could desire . While more experianced draughtsman will find plenty of challenging material here . I took the maid illustration and redrew her as Mirielle Bouquet ! I really liked the final drawing . Its wonderful stuff , but It does assume you basically know how to draw . If you are really just learning to draw , I would recommend picking up Drawing on the Rightside of the Brain along with this book . Its simply the best starter ever .
    • 031 4  This book has some inspiring material and can be a great help if you just don't know how to draw Bishoujo . It cotains info on cloths , the face , types and rather imbarising parts to look at as well . I would reccomend this book to any one who is learning and wishes to carry their hobbie in the art and design of manga .
    • 032 4  This book is great . Not only does it have several images , but it has alot of good text talking about the images . It is like Hikaru is giving you all his good tips he learned in the buisness . For example , I did not realize there are 3 kinds of big eyes ( standard , up-turned , and Droopy ) . Most authors do not give away all of there knowledge . I am impressed with is book .
    • 033 4  Before I red this book I couldn't draw cute characters ! This book helped me ! ( note : Before reading this , I recommend you to read ' How to draw manga , volume 1 , Compiling Characters ' That's how I became good drawer )
    • 034 4  Bishoujo ( pretty girl ) is excellently described in this volume and techniques for achieving it in your drawings are provided with lots of helpful examples . It includes instruction how to cue the cuteness of your characters in their appearance and actions . The reason is simple : cuteness really is the secret of Bishoujo and this book describes very well how to express that in your characters . These techniques go very well with the techniques also shown in the related book : How to Draw Manga : Pretty Girls . Having both in your library is a must .
    • 038 4  This book was really good , the only thing bad about it was that it didn't tell you how to draw the basic stuff , so now I gotta go and buy a book telling me about making heads and bodies , but still , this is a really great book to make your mangas much better .
    • 039 4  This review is from : How To Draw Manga Volume 21 : Bishoujo Pretty Gals ( How to Draw Manga ) ( Paperback ) If you're looking for a book on who to draw Manga-style characters , I'm sure this book is as good as any . It's loaded with examples of pretty girls , and gives the aspiring illustrator more than enough full body poses to learn from . But to just step back for a moment , the examples in this book have to be seen to be believed . Nothing pornographic is included , but the images are dripping with fetishisms . School girls , maids , nurses , women taking showers , how to take off your panties , how naked breasts react when leaning against different objects , catwomen , mermaids , naked women wrapped in bed sheets . . . I think about the only fetish missing is the leather mask . Page after page , this book unapologetically presents one repressed image after the other . . . it's hilarious . Strangely , the book lacks things like a page of generic facial expressions or tips for drawing hands . And the broken english text for detailing the nuances of directing the cute pose is near unintelligable . But what does any of that matter , I guess , when all you're really interested in is drawing a panty shot as your slutty librarian with the huge , untamed breasts reaches up to grab that Mech manual . Comics rock !

    • 041 4  . . . Now to the book . if you think this is a book that will tell you just how to draw pictures , well your wrong. The book teaches you how to draw more than just pictures . it teaches you how to draw deformed girls and Really ( really ) pretty girls ( and much more ) . If you are hardcore ( like me ) or not , I reccomend getting this book . There is nudity in it but only in part of it.Now for the downfalls. As i said before , it does have nudity. The book is also geared toward better drawers . Overall this book is definely a good , solid title .
    • 042 4  Female Manga characters are everywhere , female manga artists are few and hard to find . Basically , this book was written by guys for guys . It's fairly useful for drawing girls . It has excellent sections on drawing bodies , expressions poses and clothes . Some of the content I will never use ( because I don't draw soft porn ) would be the how to draw breasts squished up on tables , under arms , in clothing and the section devoted to characters removing clothing and bathing / showering . This book is sad . But only compared to its counterpart How to Draw Male Charactes which strangely enough doesn't show you how to make guys look like they are removing their clothes or squishing their * ahem * in to various positions . If I ever become a reknowned manga artist I promise to release a tastful how to draw girls book . . . or at least a how to draw males book that matches its female counterpart .
    • 043 4  If you would like to learn how to draw women taking showers , stripping down to their panties , languishing in bed naked , prancing about in negligee or serving cocktails in a bunny costume . Otherwise , I would suggest another book .
    • 044 4  I thought this book was excellent ! I really needed help with my female manga drawings ( and male ^ ^ ; that's another story ) And this book helps you a lot ! If you like drawing manga nad you need some help , try this book !
    • 046 4  Most of the stuff in here was great ; but then again its going places that don't need to be explored . If these manga books would just have their female characters put some clothing on , it would be just as good and less . . . . nude .

  • 005 4  This book is very very helpful indeed . I have improved a whole lot with it ! It teaches you how to draw faces , eyes , hair , bodies , movement , chaging clothes , Japanese dressing , dressing for bed , girls with glasses , hats , school uniforms , maids , bunny girls , nurses , robotic girls , animal girls , girls with wings and tails , mermaids , fairies , hoods and cloaks , power suits , chibi and many others ( all explaining how to make a girl look BISHOUJO ( Pretty ) ) . It is an exelent book and you get a lot of pointers to do things . I think that everytime I look and read over this book I get better and better at drawing pretty girls , but of course looking over the book only is not going to make one an artist over night , so make sure you get some practice too . PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT , books help , but what really counts is if you practice or not . This is definetly a must have book ; it is awsome , helpful , and defitnetly helps you make girls look pretty.Yes , there IS nudity , but nothing too serious . It is just artistic nudity . If the book didn't have any how could you really learn . This book is a great choice ! keep it in mind !
    • 007 4  This is EXACTLY what I have been searching for in a How To Manga book since I first started watching anime . What people must realize is that the book won't make you a better artist . It's the practice and the TECHNIQUES from the book that you can use to become a better manga artist . With this book , and a little practice , you'll be right up there with Hayao Miyazaki ( director of Princess Mononoke ) . All in all , a worthwhile purchase for anyone yearning to become an artist in the Japanese Manga style .
    • 013 4  i do think its pretty , cute , and funny ( like the cat girl pouncing on a little mouse that looks like jerry ! ) but there is some pictures of naked girls , ones wearing reveling clothes , some are fully dressed but have [ . . . ] . so be sure not to the book to little kids . but there are gorgeous ones , like mermaids . i hope it will inspire its readers ; ) !
    • 015 4  It is a very good book . There are LOTS of pictures in it . It containes things like : drawing hair , eyes , breats , girls in towels , girls with sheets ( is usefull to see the movement of the sheets and the folds ) , Chibi characters , furys and many more things . The only advantage is that there are only 2 step by step instructions . . . so you need a basic book if you want to use this book .
    • 017 4  fantastic it improves your drawing to profesional like masterpiece with the best detail there is to know . they describe every thing perfectly and even some tips are included .

  • 035 4  I bought this book for my daughter who loves to draw , and I knew there were some nudes in the book . Some adult nieces of mine , however , saw the book and were very concerned that I was giving my daughter pornography . I don't see it that way , but parents should read Mr . Romano's review in this section . . . . he details some of the more risque poses to be found , and I think parents should be aware of these before buying . My daughter loves this book , and we have discussed the pictures in question . I've also instructed her not to take it to school , because it could be misinterpreted . The photos are definitely sex-kitten ish , which is not something I want my daughter to think is OK .
    • 023 4  This book has taught me so much on how to draw women . The design and drawings are so detailed and show you how to draw some of the things that amateur artists wouldn't even spot if they just looked at it . The difficulty level is high , I admit , but if you master this , you've gotten pretty far !
    • 047 4  I've been looking for a long time to find a book to assist me in drawing proper anime women . This is the book !
    • 048 4  I ordered this book on December 15th , and now its January 19th . I just had to approve its delay . Also , this is the second time I've tried to order it . My advice to you is , order it , but be prepared to wait a looooooooong time . I gave it a star because it SOUNDS cool . . .
