Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

  • 028 4  As an owner of 3 LCD T。
's , ranging from 27 to 52 and i built a THX home theater in my basement i feel i know enough about TV / Audio to know what is good and what is bad . This is a remarkable TV once you get your settings up and running . Like all T。
's in the stores they are all preset at their highest settings to get your attention ( brightness , contrast , gamma , temp etc ) . Also , because of this the average American viewer is used to watching a TV at a too bright setting . So when they do actually do some research and calibrate at home or even pay a ISF certified calibrator to get into the hidden service menus they think the picture is now too dark . Rest assured viewers this TV will give you a fantastic picture . Remember though that the quality of the picture is limited to the quality of the input . Standard Def signals will NEVER look HD on any HD tv , i don't care what any drone at your best-circuit-shack tells you . Often times SD just doesn't look good on a HD TV . Now , if you can afford a new HD LCD or Plasma or OLED TV then you should be able to afford to pipe it to a HD signal from your cable / sat provider ( yes i know you can get HD over the air but ONLY if you have a QUAM receiver built in to the TV otherwise you'll need a box to get HD signals ) . I have read the negative reviews ( the few that there are ) and most of them seem to be attributed to lack of calibration . You have to calibrate a TV out of the box . . . . simple as that . As stated earlier the factory settings are simply there to get your attention on the floor from all the competitors . For the ones that have broken glass issues , this has nothing to do with the quality of the TV , that's the delivery method . Also , Sharp has a great warranty and as part if their warranty for this premium line of TVs they even offer a loaner if it does need servicing . Great TV , great service , great warranty . . . i cant complain . . . This TV replaced my Sony 52 LCD that ( unfortunately as i did like it also ) just quit on me .
    • 027 4  I bought the LC - 52D64U in November of 2008 . The first problem that occured ( within the first 2 weeks ) was a vertical line of dead pixels running the entire screen . It looked like a single line of black or unpowered pixels . The tv was serviced & that problem has not yet reoccured . A few weeks after the dead pixel issue , a new problem showed up ; faint dark bands running horizontally across the display . The bands were approx 2 wide . There were three bands , one near the top , one near the middle of the display & the other at the bottom . The band at the top was the most noticeable . The bands showed up regardless of the source of the image . DVDs , VHS tapes , & Satellite feeds all displayed the bands . Another service tech came & fixed the problem . Now after 9 - 10 months the problem has reoccured with these bands . The tv is now out of warranty & the problem is all mine . After having all of these problems , I can safely say I will NEVER BUY a SHARP PRODUCT again .

  • Sharp - - with factory calibrations , Sharp had the best shadow details ( less black crush , like seeing dark hair instead of paint-by-number hair , clothing texture and patterns , tree bark , shadow scenes , etc . , but this difference could only be due to different factory calibrations ) , color less saturated ( but maybe accurate and again the difference maybe due to factory calibrations ) , and black more of a gray ( although the CNET post-calibration review liked its color accuracy , black level , and the TV except for banding ) . Unfortunately , fluorescent tube banding is still shamefully present ( look for it on uniform scenes like blue sky or text commercials . . . it is not noticeable with non-uniform scenes ) . I have noticed banding on 5 / 7 of these 64 models . Consumer Reports and CNET report that Sharp's ' 07 and ' 08 models have banding ( as do some AVS forum users ) , so bad for Sharp not to resolve this on their ' 08 model . A salesman noted Sharp's 84 and 94 models would arrive in mid-December , so since Sharp is missing part of the important fourth quarter sales maybe the delay is to resolve banding on these models ? If it was not for banding , I would buy this due to its good shadow detail , design form , and cost ( especially since LED LCDs will probably render 52 fluorescent LCDs obsolete next year by offering a true black and better colors and OLEDs will render both obsolete by 2012 ) . Sony W3000 - - factory calibration dark details were second best and a good black level . Using CNET's XRB4 calibration settings , the shadow detail was like the Sharp . Because of cost and Sharp's banding , this a good option . XBR4 and 71 - - factory calibrated dark details were the worse , but after CNET's calibrations the XBR4 appeared similar to the Sharp . I did not try calibrating the Samsung , but CNET notes their post-calibrated review of Samsung's 65 has good shadow detail . Factory-calibrated black levels are very good , but this maybe the reason for poor shadow details . Regarding the 120 Hz , my non-techie understanding is it improves high-definition disc movies ' 24 frame-per-second ( FPS ) judder ( jerkiness ) that occurs with 60 Hz TVs since fitting 24 FPS into 60 Hz requires some frames to be repeated 2 x and others 3 x . With a 120 Hz TV , each of the 24 FPS can be repeated 5 x ( e.g . , 24 x 5 = 120 ) , thus no judder . I believe broadcast TV is 30 FPS , where frames can be repeated 2 x to fit a 60 Hz TV without judder . LCD 120 Hz , to my knowledge per expert reviews , has nothing to do with improving motion blur contrary to promotional hype . Plasmas - - did not observe long and mostly on vivid . Factory-calibrated shadow detail is bad , but it has good black levels . Panasonic's 750 was briefly set to cinema , and in the dark Magnolia showroom its brightness level was too dim for me .
    • 001 4  I purchased the Sharp LC52D64U via a direct promotion with Sharp USA . The deal I was offered was too good to pass up . I have never bought a large format TV in my life and always got by with a Sony CRT 27 in my bedroom running SD TV . I was just fine with that for many years and when I moved into a new apartment with a nice big ( and empty ) living room and ordered HD cable , I decided to consider purchasing a large HD panel TV . When I did my research , I was overwhelmed at the number of choices , formats and connections types , such as LCD , plasma , projection , 720i , 720p , 1080i , 1080p , Hdmi , HD channels recievers . . . . argh ! ? ! ? ! ? ! Well after I did enough research , this Sharp LCD has everything that I need for at least the next 5 years . I am running a Tivo Series 3 HD reciever pumping 1080i HD channels over digital cable into one of the 3 available HDMI ports . The image quality is , to say the least , MAGNIFICENT ! ! ! ! The deep blacks and rich colors really cut through exceptionally well . I have not yet played an HD DVD or Blu-Ray movie through it , but if the 1080i HD channels look this great , I can only expect the same from watching Spiderman 3 on Bluray at 1080P when it's available this late October . When I was researching large format panel T。's , my eye kept going to plasmas like Panasonics and the Elite series from Pioneer . Suffice it to say , these brands were very much out of my budget and consdered LCD's instead . So I did some research on the Aqous series and found alot of useful information . I also read many reports of the Sharp Aquos series suffering from a bad phenomenom known as banding and a recent review of the LC52D64U on cnet.com indicated that the problem was still present in this new model . This made me nervous about buying the TV , but then I reminded myself that those reviewers have eyes like a hawk and scrutinize every little detail that an average consumer ( like me ) probably wouldn't even notice until pointed out . Well I don't know if I can't see it , or if it is not present in my particular unit , but I have NOT experienced any banding issues that may appear as color bleed , ghosting effects or ongoing pixilation . Sharp does offer Aquos models that have a higher refresh rate as much at 120 hertz . This unit , I believe , operates at a 60 hertz refresh rate . The higher 120 refresh rate is supposed to handle fast moving images ( such as football player running across a field ) and improve the image so as to reduce any bluriness or undesireable pixilation . Well I do not watch alot of sports , so this is not a deal breaker for me . There were a few times I was watching a movie and saw some pixilation occurring due to fast moving images . But as long as you watch your 52 sharp LCD from a practical viewing distance and loose yourself in the entertainment and not scrutinize every single image that's on the screen , you probably won't notice it when it does occur , if at all . Overall , I am extremely pleased with the Sharp LC52D64U . Remember that to get the most out of this LCD panel , be prepared to spend some money and feed it a high resolution data feed for both audio and video . Everything I am sending it comes in at full 1080i / 1080P , if not upscaled from 720 / 480 . I plan to get the new X-Box 360 elite and it has an HDMI output port and many of the newer games run at 1080P , so I can only imagine that there's more visual pleasure to come my way . I hope this non-technical review was helpful . Now go out and buy this damn thing and be a happy couch potato ! ! ! : - )
    • 002 4  Read this entire review , it will clarify a lot for you with the facts . Excellent physical design with minimal bezel around screen and also very slim depth and light weight making it as ideal as possible for wall mounting . Excellent anti reflective screen , always clear and vivid in all room lighting . Descent sound and picture factory settings ~ easily rectified and improved with adjustment to the settings . Great picture quality overall especially in HD , I enjoy watching the TV with an HD dvd player hdmi connectivity and an HD dvd the most , its also fun connecting my laptop to it with its VGA input . I have written a previous review of this set elsewhere , all in line with the very words in this review only this time regret to have to add that I have noticed the notorious banding issue on the screen . keep in mind that in 80 - 90% of the scenes you'll watch you wont see the banding , only superb contrast ratio and excellent response time / processing of all content . However , the banding does occur in scenes where camera moves horizontally or diagonally over a large span . for example when watching the planet earth HD DVD and seeing the camera pan or tilt over a long landscape I also saw the horizontal bands like thin thin barely there but there whitish lines across the screen . In spit of all that , i love the TV because again the banding is rare and all other scenes including the speed and rapid movements in a action movie or the color and clarity of the details in a rainforest while watching a documentary this TV does a excellent job . Overall , if you can put up with the banding in those shots where the camera filming a shot scanning a tall building from bottom to top or a wide landscape , This TV is a super cool and modern looking TV . Aquos branded with all the bells and whistles including 1080p and all the connectivity you can ask for . Almost near future proof only lacking 120hz refresh rate which I found not to be necessary at all with this unit . Bottom line , I plan on keeping my TV , every guest that has been over and seen the TV in action love it and want one for themselves .
    • 003 4  We didn't buy from Vanns , but have been enjoying this set at home for four days now . We haven't experienced the banding that others have complained about - - and I have been very vigilant looking for it . Set-up was fairly straightforward . The stand is gratifyingly solid . Connecting cables for inputs 1 & 2 was a little more difficult than I expected , the angle you hold the connectors is really important , much more so than on other sets - - although once done , everything is nice and tight . One nice surprise so far : the built-in speakers sound much better than I expected . The picture is gorgeous . Even DVDs from an old non-progressive scan player are excellent ( the progressive scan player I ordered arrives today ) . We watched Monday Night Football in 1080i and newscasts in 1080i , the image quality and detail were amazing . I didn't realize before what nice clothes the anchors wear ! We're very happy so far . We'll see how we feel in a few months .
    • 004 4  I bought this TV on sale from Circuit City , on the black Friday , so I have the TV for almost a month now and I think this is one of the best purchases I have ever made . Some more details to help you . Oh , yes , there's no banding on my set , and that's all I was worried about before buying this set . 1 . Read all the reviews and see for yourself , this TV can handle dark scenes better than any other , and yes it handles different black tones way better than much costlier rivals . Just look for the dark hair in front of a dark background in different sets , or look for shadows in a night scene to make this comparison . 2 . Secondary color adjustment are just great , for some movies you need to use it , but overall the defaults are great . Also this TV come with 3 HDMI and host of other inputs , very useful when you want to hook it up with various toys . 3 . I use Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD player for watching movies , using the HDMI and I am convinced that you don't need a Blue-ray , at least for now . Because I watch the Pirates DVD and I have seen it on BR in Circuit City , and mine was very close . 4 . This TV has fantastic sound out of the box , in my setup I use my Home theater speakers only while watching movies , for regular TV viewing the TV speakers are just great . 5 . 60hz vs . 120hz , well unless you are willing to pay that extra dough I think you should be very happy with this TV with motion smoothing option that it comes with it . It artificially enhances the fast moving scenes to increase clarity , again it will not beat an 120hz set , but then the difference in most cases are hardly visible in naked eye . IMHO this is a good buy for the money , we all know that you get better items when you pay more , but try to look for the optimum price-performance mix , and this TV hits the bullseye . Go ahead and get it , check for the banding , if there is no banding you probably made a very good decision , if there is banding just return the damn thing and get another set . Btw , most newer sets manufactured after May ' 07 has lot less banding issues .
    • 005 4  Bought from Sharp Direct . Easy to set up . Light weight . Slim profile compared to the 62U . No banding visible during normal viewing . Be sure to use a good quality HDMI connector with gold plate . Really deep blacks . Vivid color . This TV rocks .
    • 006 4  This review is from : Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 - Inch 1080p LCD HDTV ( Electronics ) I've had the Sharp 52 for several weeks now and we love it . Awesome picture quality , and it's REALLY big . I like the extra thin screen but was disappointed that the wall mount brackets are as thick as the TV ; kinda spoils the effect . In the end we chose not to use the wall mount because of that and instead use the stand on a table . I specifically chose this model because of the thinness and the non-glare screen . We use it in a family room with many windows and lots of sunlight , so I've been pleasantly surprised that it has almost no glare off the screen and looks great even in the middle of the day . No issues with it at all . Highly recommended , especially if you have a room with lots of sunlight and windows .

    • 008 4  Just bought this TV on a great black friday sale for $2199 . Love the case design , the picture quality is near perfect , tons of ports . My only complaint so far ? The tuner . Changing channels is painfully slow , literally about 3 - 5 seconds for every channel . . . UPDATE - 1 - 10 - 08 Update - 1 - 9 - 2008 Tv has stopped powering on . Power and OPC light flashes . Was told by tech support to unplug for at least an hour ( conveniently tech support closed in 45 minutes ) to reset the TV . Of course this fix didn't work , and called back to Tech support . 1.5 weeks before I can get a Tech to my house to look at the TV . Good thing I bought at Circuit City and they have / had extended return policies for the holidays . . . Will exchange and hope for the best . FYI - a quick search will show that this is a widespread problem with no known remedy on models purchased ( from what I can tell ) from around 11 - 20 until around 12 - 26 . . . It's a shame because the picture and style on this LCD are fantastic . One more side note . . . annoyingly when watching movies via coaxial cable ( I havent purchased a blu ray yet ) i get / got a menu box in the upper right every time it thinks the audio track has changed . . . Presumably because my coaxial connection is not 100% ? UPDATE - 1 - 11 - 08 Return and exchange went great . . . including a free $499 Sharp Aquos Bluray special that is going on right now with CC . $1700 for TV $499 for Bluray . . . Total still $2199 for black Friday Deal . . . Now only if I could have switched for a PS3 for BluRay AND Digital Media Server . Might Try . . . New UPDATE - 1 - 14 - 08 Ended up with PS3 HOWEVER after 1 day of perfect picture , Sharp LCD now shows a very grainy picture . . . have checked all inputs and all seem to show this low detail grainy picture . . . I guess I will have to return AGAIN . ALSO when changing TV Channels , TV Froze Had to unplug to reboot as the power button would not even shut down tv . . . AM regretting my purchase at this point , change my shars to 2 star recommendation . . .
    • 009 4  Just want to warn everyone that once the TV is in your hands , YOU cannot returned it back for an exchange even if the product is defective . I just bought a LC52D64U 52 - inch 1080p TV From Amazon - - - [ . . . ] . When delivered , I had inspected the TV and saw no physical damage and signed the delivery document . Once I put it in my living room and hooked it up the power , I found that the screen was dark without any signal and there is no sound . The product was defective right out of the box and I cannot return it for an exchange . I have to call Sharp to get someone to fix it . It is likely that it will take about a month to get it fixed . NOW I am stuck with it . I am not even sure if the TV was real brand new . Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 - inch 1080p LCD HDTV In the future , I will never buy anything from vendors if it is not exchangeable in case the product is defective ! ! ! Update : today is 6 / 4 / 2008 , the TV is still in repair shop ! !
    • 010 4  This set meets and exceeds my expectations . There is every type of input / output connection available . I use HDMI and optical audio . The number of HDMI inputs means no HDMI switching needed in a home theatre receiver . The internal speakers are not on par with a great HD TV . You need to use a 5.1 surround ( or 7.1 if you wish ) sound system and speakers . The picture is excellant ( no banding ) . I have it between a window and a door wall with no daylight viewing problems . No reflections ( like a plasma would have ) and great contrast . I use the stand that comes with it sitting on a 30 high entertainment center with glass front for four components ( HD Sat receiver , ONKYO Home Theatre , DVD / VHS recorder with HDMI up convert , and 200 disk CD player ) . All those cords are neatly behind the cabinet . Too hard to get them out of a wall mount . Also , the Amazon delivery was fast and they brought it into the living room for me . So far , two months of excellant performance . I highly recomment this HDTV .
    • 011 4  This review is from : Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 - Inch 1080p LCD HDTV ( Electronics ) I can't describe the months of tortuous research I performed to prepare for this purchase . It boiled down to the Sharp Aquos 54 Series and Sony Bravia . They were both almost identical . The Bravia almost had me because they had the 120hz refresh rate and connectors all over the place . At the time of research , the aquos had the slower refresh and a disappointing lack of HDMI , PC connectors . Then out of no where , the 64 series Aquos released and had all if not more than the most current Bravia , and at $1,000 less . At this point it was a no brainer . Amazon delivered and set up the set in my living room and hauled away packing material at no extra charge . . . a nice treat . The set performed exactly at representated since . Colors are brilliant , black is black ( and that is easy feat ) . I thought 52 was too big , but once set-up it is actually now the minimum size for my living room I would consider . Becareful not to buy too small , I almost made the mistake of getting the 48 . I am very satisfied with this purchase .

    • 013 4  I was scared to purchase this TV because of complaints of banding in many end user reviews . But I saw those complaints primarily in the D62 model reviews , and the price was too good to pass up ( I saved over $1000 over Circuit City's price ) . I have had it two weeks now and have absolutely no banding issues at all , and the colors and blacks are as nice as these other reviewers say . Git yerself one of these bad boys today !
    • 014 4  First let me say I screwed up by going to the lowest priced website fotoconnections to buy my set . That was a nightmare and a rip off . The order was never processed and they tried to raise the price afterwards . Do not buy from them - read all the bad reviews ! ! I cancelled and placed with Amazon . The ordered was processed and delivered within the week . This is my 2nd Sharp Aquos . My other one is a 42 . Like other reviews , I did alot of research and found this to be a great TV . I saw the Sony and Sharp side by side and I just couldn't see paying an extra $1K for the Sony . The picture is crystal clear you will love it . . . .
    • 015 4  The store has 52 Sony's W3000 and XBR4 , Samsung's 71F , and Sharp's 64 together and next to 50 Panasonic and Samsung plasmas . The four LCDs were set to cinema mode ( significantly lower brightness and color saturation for home viewing than the vivid mode for store sales . . . be sure to check before buying and even better try using something like CNET's calibration settings which I tried on the Sony LCDs ) and the Panasonic was briefly set to cinema . My impressions are : Sharp - - with factory calibrations , Sharp had the best shadow details ( less black crush , like seeing dark hair instead of paint-by-number hair , clothing texture and patterns , tree bark , shadow scenes , etc . , but this difference could only be due to different factory calibrations ) , color less saturated ( but maybe accurate and again the difference maybe due to factory calibrations ) , and black more of a gray ( although the CNET post-calibration review liked its color accuracy , black level , and the TV except for banding ) . • 016 4  I've had this Aquos for about 3 weeks now . I spent a lot of time comparing different sets including many of the newer technology LCD sets with LED backlighting , etc . Was there a difference ? Maybe . Was it worth the extra $2000 - 3000 or more for the newer tech ? In my opinion no . The D64U provides a beautiful picture on HD sources ( I never watched golf before owning this TV , now it's a mesmerizing spectacle ! ) or any upconverted DVD . I have not seen any HD LCD's that do very well with SD analog signals , and this one is no exception . But I didn't need that as I mainly watch only HD channels and movies . Sports have looked great as well , although I am reserving comments slightly until football season starts . The 4ms response seems to be more than adequate for fast moving scenes , I notice very little ghosting . When searching , I also closely compared sets with 120 Hz refresh rates , including those with frame-filling programming , vs . 60 Hz as is this model . Again the difference was so marginal ( and in most cases not visible at all ) that I could not justify the price difference . Finally everything added up to this being the right choice for me . Great picture and plenty of inputs for all the different components I use it with ( cable , dvd , pc , 2 game systems ) for a price that was hard to beat at 52 . I would recommend to anyone - - definitely look closely before you decide to invest the extra in another , you might not see any more difference than I . P.S . I have witnessed none of the banding other reviewers have . Can't discredit it as often as it is mentioned , but not present in mine .
    • 017 4  This is my first large-screen TV . I spent a month or so researching before the purchase . There is much chatter in reviews about banding and non-uniform picture , etc . Given that I don't have electronic measuring instruments , I have to say there is absolutely no sign of any such effects in my TV , and the picture is fine . The TV lives up to the advertisement in terms of being quite compact with a bright and sharp picture . I did find that setting up some of the picture parameters ( from the controller menu ) did help with the HD pictures where motion was concerned . I also didn't realize at first that you need an HDMI cable or component cable to get the HD picture - I originally had a composite cable . In side by side comparisons in the store , Sony appeared to have a better picture , but I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison under controlled conditions . The built in sound seems quite adequate , but understandably a dedicated sound system would be an improvement .
    • 018 4  We ordered this TV on December 10th and it delivered and up and running on December 18th , we could have had it delivered earlier , but our HDTV connection wasn't ready until the 18th . This was one of the easiest online transactions I've ever had , far better than Ebay . The price was easily $500 less than I expected to pay . Amazon is great ! We chose this TV because it was thinner than the other sets we looked at , Sony and Samsung , and the picture was comparable . The set is connected to a DISH VIP722 DVR via an HDMI cable . I've tried both composite and HDMI and there was no noticeable difference so we went with the single cable HDMI connection . The default picture setting was way too bright for our environment , probably set for a retail store , so we had to play around with the setup . The first thing I would recommend is to flip up the cover on the remote and use the A / V Mode button to test out different picture modes to see if one meets your needs . If you don't like any of them you can set it to user mode and put in your own adjustments . has some settings you might want to start with . The sound is far better than I expected and is really fine for most news and drama shows , but with such a big screen and High Def picture , many shows deserve a better sound system which will be my next big purchase . On the downside , a lot of shows are still not in High Def and when a video shot in Standard Def is shown on a program broadcast in High Def we get an annoying flickering white and black line at the top of the screen , this is known as under scan . I'm trying to get this resolved with Sharp or DISH . Overall this has completely changed the way we watch TV , it's much more like being in a theater than the old 27 inch TV .
    • 019 4  I am completely satisfied with this TV and with the entire purchasing process . I purchased this set directly from Amazon ( not from one of their authorized sellers ) . Delivery was fast , and the white glove service was the best ! Since I bought it directly from Amazon , I got the 30 day price protection guarantee . The price when down three weeks after purchase , and Amazon credited me the difference . The setup was a breeze , and the picture and sound quality is great . I did a lot of research before selecting this LCD TV . I was not disappointed . This is the best 52 1080P LCD out there for the price !
    • 020 4  if this tv were any better i don't know what it would be like . super clear definite colors and sound even is amazingly clear . so far i only have two negatives . 1 . i cannot yet figure out how to get the close captioning on 2 . likely not the tv but the sound blasts you when yo go from a porgram to commercials . fcc should put a stop to this but dud ? really fine tv and delivery was ahead of time and done quite properly with instructions for a two person delivery for off-loading . love it !
    • 021 4  FOr the price that I got this TV for versus the Sony XBR , I was able to get the home theater system and the wall mount bracket . The picture is exceptional in HD and on nonHD channels . Set up is a breeze .
    • 022 4  Couldn't be happier with this TV . The 52 size is perfect for a viewing distance of 7ft . It completely immerses you in the picture . I didn't have any troubles with banding with this TV which have been mentioned in some reviews of this model . Picture quality is excellent . Great connectivity . It looks fantastic . The slim profile that is new this year with the TV only being 3 and change deep combined with low profile mounting hardware ( I bought a low profile mount from Amazon ) makes this TV lie so close to the wall that it looks amazing .
    • 023 4  I just have 3 weeks with the tv , and everything is how I was expected . Great value for the price . I did shop around in several websites and stores and this was the best alternative that I found in for 52 inches or more . Another HD input would be great . The format for the setup features seem little cheap for a TV of this size , however has nothing to do with functionallity , it is only a matter of looks . No complains good tv for the price .
    • 024 4  As usual , Amazon had the best price around ( better than the local stores , or Costco , or BJs ) . I had come down to a choice between this one and the Sony ; price decided the issue . It was delivered ( with a confirmation phone call as to time , etc , a couple of days before ) . The fellows delivered the set into my living room . They asked if I wanted them to set it up - I was too excited to realize that maybe this was part of the delivery service ; I just figured I didn't have enough money to pay more for setting it up , and sent them on their way . If this was included , I would have liked to have Amazon notify me of that , instead of having to wait until a friend came over to help me with it . . . . The picture is magnificent ! My eyesight is not what it used to be , but this set allowed me to read the scrolling across the bottom easily - and the sharpness of the picture was fantastic ! Especially the ocean scenes : the water looked so real . . . . I had read about ' banding ' , but did not see any until I'd had the set about a month : then , on some scenes ( usually with very plain backgrounds ) , I noticed a vertical line at about 1 / 3 of the screen from the left , with a slight color differential on the left third of the screen . But , it's unseen in a busy scene with a lot of action or items on the screen . So - it's there , but I'm not really concerned about it . The set has a lot of settings for picture size , colors , closed captions , etc . - but using my local cable service takes precedence over many of the settings . So , I set everything to my liking before hooking into the cable service . The most fascinating thing was the choice of CC font , font color , font background color , and font background transparency : loved that ! The set seems to run hot - it will keep the living room warmer this winter ! I keep it on a coffee table with lots of open space around it , so there shouldn't be any problem with overheating . My airconditioner blows across one edge of the set , and has never caused any operating or viewing problem . Basically , I have been watching a lot of TV since getting this set , and love it . I have no real complaints , and would recommend it to anyone .
    • 025 4  This review is from : Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 - Inch 1080p LCD HDTV ( Electronics ) After researching HDTVs online and in stores , we settled on this 52 Sharp HDTV . Glad we did . Sharp colors and great sound . We haven't seen any of the issues others have written about . Plenty of inputs so I can connect my Tivo , DVD system , Playstation and Comcast digital cable box . I still have room to connect a blu-ray player if I buy one . The Amazon price was by far the cheapest we could find online or in stores ( Best Buy , Circuit City ) . Shipping only took 5 days and the delivery company called to arrange delivery . They called again to give me notice they were coming , moved my old picture tube TV from the stand , set up the Sharp HDTV and made sure it worked . I was a bit nervous ordering an expensive HDTV online , but it turned out to be a great experience .

    • 029 4  I have had this TV for 4 weeks . . . and I have an appointment to have it worked on already . Regardless of the input selection , the screen will randomly blank out for 1 - 2 seconds . I'm not the only one with this problem , make sure you do your homework first before buying this TV . UPDATE - Sharp is replacing my TV after the repair did not solve the problem of the random picture loss . Awaiting a new one . . .
    • 030 4  This set is more than my family expected - high def is clear , color is great , and I haven't noticed any of the banding problems some have noticed . I was a little nervous about possiby unpacking the set and it wouldn't work , but the delivery personnel took it out of the box , plugged it in and made sure it worked . Evidently , that is something Amazon requires .
    • 031 4  After doing exstensive research on TVs I decided on the Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 LCD TV . Previously the Aquos line was out of my price range . But when I found it for $2175 on amazon I bought one . I counldn't be happier with my decision . I haven't seen any banding in the picture what so ever . My sister-in-law has a 50 Visio and its picture isn't anywhere close to the Aquos . I also have friends with DLP TVs the pictures aren't as good and don't have near the viewing range of the LCDs . • 032 4  Great TV ! Bought on Amazon and everything went off without a hitch . This 52 inch seems like a perfect size for a living room . We view it about 10 ft away . Looks great even during the day . I used it with a TiVo Series 3 and a Toshiba HD DVD and a Sony AV system . HDTV from your provider , TiVo , an AV system and a player ( DVD and / or Blu-Ray ) is a lot of fun ! It is a whole different experience from just watching a little box . For home entertainment , HD and TiVo have to be two of the best innovations for home entertainment , ever . Great TV .
    • 033 4  This review is from : Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 - Inch 1080p LCD HDTV ( Electronics ) This is a terrific large flat panel TV . The sharpness and color is exceptional . The factory defaults were too saturated , however , and took some adjustment .

    • 036 4  This review is from : Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 - Inch 1080p LCD HDTV ( Electronics ) I bought this TV a little over one year ago from Amazon ( it cost more back then ! ) . I absolutely love it . The picture is amazing and I could not be happier with the purchase . The TV was delivered to my house and the company that was contracted helped me set it up to boot . I am very satisfied with the process , from start to finish .

    • 039 4  At less than $1300.00 , this was by far the cheapest 52 LCD HDTV out there AND it's a Sharp Aquos . It looks great , both form and picture , has lots of inputs and works perfectly .
    • 040 4  HD channels and DVD movies come in great . Picture not so great for non-HD channels . May be typical of all new flatscreen TVs ' . Light , easy set up .
    • 041 4  This is the best TV I've ever seen . The picture is so sharp and clear that the Sony 50 HD projection TV I've had for two years seems almost like regular TV by comparison . The Sony only had one HDMI input which meant that my PS3 and my satellite service couldn't both be connected at the highest quality at the same time . The Aquos has lots of inputs and is much more flexible . I love it !
    • 042 4  As good as advertise and what all the other reviewer has written . Don't notice the banding , but than I'm not looking for it . With HDMI and my Onkyo tuner it was super easy to setup all the components . I even used one of my older Mac laptop to run my movies . With FrontRow , now I've 200 + DVD quality movies on my playlist . Very happy with my purchase .
    • 043 4  This Sharp HDTV was a present to myself for Christmas and I am delighted with every aspect . The sound is brilliant , the picture and colour beautiful - - it was extremely easy to hook-up my surround sound stereo . Just plugged the HDMI contacts in / out - - and vvvvwwwwooollllla ! ! ! a present to myself I will cherish for at least a few years ( hopefully ) I have a 52 inch Sony HD in the living room and the picture quality is practically the same , although I have to say that the Sony HDTV has a much better base quality - - - but I am happy , happy with my new purchase .
    • 044 4  I am not a techie and will never claim to be one . For technical information / set-up , you'll need to read another review . After promising my family that we would graduate from a tube TV , I spent about 1 month looking at the 52 and larger TVs on the market . We looked locally ( to see the screens / pictures / visibility ) and on-line for pricing and reviews . From on-line reviews , I narrowed my choice to an LCD ( from plasma , dlp & lcd ) , and locally / visually , I narrowed my choice to Sony & Sharp . Price-wise , I narrowed our choice to a 52 because the 65 is just too pricey . This Sharp Aquos model is what we decided to purchase , and we ended up purchasing it locally because of the price on a Black Friday special . My husband had it mounted and running that day ( it did take 2 people to mount it ) . We ve watched in both HDTV & analog . The HD picture is fabulous & the analog is fuzzy ( fuzzier than the tube TV picture ) . We had no problems getting the TV running ( the manual is just ok ) . All in all , the whole family is very , very happy with this TV & I know where to find my family members when I need them .
    • 045 4  I bought this TV based on all of the great reviews , but unfortunately , I got a lemon ( what makes me nervous is that I bought 3 different size Sharp Aquos TVs at basically the same time for different rooms in my house ) . I realize that happens , but I've been VERY disappointed in the follow up service . Sharp sent the local warranty service place out two different times to replace boards before they finally decided that the TV couldn't be repaired . With shipping time on the boards , this was almost a month . When I called Sharp ( they never contacted me ) to find out what was going on , they told me they were going to ship a replacement TV to me . I told the person I spoke to that I was having a large event at my house the following weekend ( 6 business days notice ) and he told me that wouldn't be a problem - he would make sure it was pulled from a warehouse near me to minimize shipping time . He said that the logistics company would contact me to schedule a time to deliver the new TV and pick up the old one . I was getting nervous because I hadn't heard anything from the logistics company so I called Sharp back and just found out that they shipped the TV from California ( I live in KY ) and it wouldn't even get to St . Louis until next week ( after my party with 40 people I work with coming over ) . The guy clearly lied to me on the phone last week and the guy today could care less about my situation and offered no other solution . He basically said , tough luck , you can call the logistics company and tell them to hurry up . The TV has been broken now for longer than it worked . I'm very frustrated and would never buy a Sharp product again . I also question whether it would have been easier if I could have taken the TV back to a local retailer if I hadn't purchased it online . I buy a lot of things online and especially from Amazon.com ( I've probably spent over $5,000 this year alone . . . T。's , new laptop , bar refridgerator , smaller stuff ) , but I'll definitely be more careful about my purchases in the future and think about the implications of having problems down the road .
    • 046 4  I am extremely happy with my purchase . The picture quality is outstanding . I use it primarily as a computer monitor and to watch Blu-Ray movies . I would recommend this LCD to anyone . 52 @ $1600 .
    • 047 4  Not a lot to add over other reviews , except to say we've had this set for around 18 months now with no issues at all and superb 1080 experience . The LCD screen being much less reflective than our previous plasma screen has been a revelation . You'll never want to watch 480 - vision again !
    • 048 4  Picture on regular channels is just , OK . On HD it's better but not what I expected . Some pixilation and ghosting . For the money I should have spent an extra $300 for a Sony or Samsung same size lcd or new Samsung LED 61 dlp tv . In fairness , I probably need to learn more about calibrating the set's picture . But why does the consumer have to be a techie or electronics guru to get a TV to yield a good picture ? I yearn for the days of the old CRT that lasted 20 years and had a good picture the whole time ! And all you did was turn it on , off , bright , dark ! !
    • 049 4  Researched like a rocket scientist for few weeks to purchase just the right tv at the right price like most people . I had a Trinitron for life until recently due to the digital tv signal thing , I thought I give these lcds a try . Decided on this unit based on the great reviews on forums and experts . Why I bought : I love the design of this unit , very sleek . . . nice . I like the features and specs . I like the price not too much ( Sony ) and not too cheap ( Vizio ) . Just the right amount of this and that . Why I am writing this review : omg , first set had a white line in the middle of the screen that went up and down , first I thought it was normal since it was a large screen . . . lol . i returned and repurchased the same model in a diffirent box . Had it for 2 months now , and suddenly the picture goes blank . . . green power light goes on and off but I am unable to access the tv menu , etc . I cant even turn off the tv without unplugging . Researched online forums . . . I was not the only victim . I tried this and that as suggested but nothing worked . I'm returning this unit and never buying Sharp again . I miss the good ol ' days of the solid Sony Trinitron sets . Good luck !

    • 052 4  Looking at all the research , I felt that we needed a 120 hz LCD TV . Finally we deceided to buy the 4 mS respons time Sharp and are very happy with the unit . Brightness is great even in a well lit room . Viewing angle is everything we hoped for . Fasy action sports is a pleasure to watch . All in all a great product at a great price from Amazon
    • 053 4  I did some extensive research before buying this 52 Sharp Aquos LC52D64U . I almost bought the LC52D82U , but after reading a review on Amazon that pointed out some of the deficiencies of the 82U model over the newer 64U model , I decided that was the one to get . I already had a 32 Sharp LCD , not an Aquos model and was pleased with the looks and picture , I was not pleased with the sound output on the 32 , it lacked real ' punch ' at the high end . and that only goes to ' 60 ' , whatever that means . the 32 advertises a 10W output on each audio channel . So when I saw the specs for the 52 and it showed 15W per channel I assumed with the larger output that would take care of the problem of too low a volume like the 32 WRONG ! The 52 has the same problem with volume as the 32 . For some reason the actual volume of the set from a setting of 35 to 60 couldn't be 1 or 2 decibels . Being very pleased with the picture quality and the arrangement of the outputs I decided to take the Audio Output to my Bose Acoustic Wave machine and that solved the problem of weak and muddled audio . Now in fairness to the Sharp , my wife has no problems in hearing the sharp but I am a little hard of hearing and like the louder volume range , which Sharp seems to have a problem achieving . I do like the smaller profile being a little smaller than the 82U and 25% thinner works for me . High Definiion channels look awesome and HD-DVD likewise , but now I have to think , ' Blu Ray ' . It's always something .
    • 054 4  The Sharp was even better than expected ! Nicer than the Sharp from three years ago - no receiver box . The delivery was excellent - they unpacked , put the stand together , set the TV in place and even put the batteries in the remote !
    • 055 4  This review is from : Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 - Inch 1080p LCD HDTV ( Electronics ) Very pleased with the quality , case , sleek design , beautiful picture . Sharp makes an excellent tv . Better hurry , when this model sells out , Sharps new version is much more expensive .

    • 057 4  received item earlier than expected . delivered to my living room . enjoy it a lot . there is a little motion blur however , but that is to be expected from LCD's .
    • 058 4  This review is from : Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 - Inch 1080p LCD HDTV ( Electronics ) After careful use and adequate shakedown time , I find this LCD TV remarkably great . It is sharp and the visual angels of view are equally great . However , the black shiny plastic bezels is easy to scratch , and cannot be cleaned well due to this fact . Secondly the display is not as bright as it should be . Most images are darker when compared to other LCD screens .

    • 060 4  We could not be more pleased with the shipping and being able to track our order , the condition of the TV on delivery , the ease of installation and the picture quality . We have recommended this to many of our friends .
    • 061 4  Almost all in this TV is right , the only one problem that I can see is the black color it have not realism as the others colors , therefore , for the money that paid I think could live with it .
    • 062 4  Sharp Aquos LC52D64U is horrible , it was delivered 3 weeks ago and I have spent all my tv viewing time since trying to tweak it . Impossible to get colors right and when you get close on one channel , you invariably have to re-adjust on next channel . Picture is only clear on up close shots , as soon as video switches to a medium to distant shot , all is out of focus . Same for DVD'S . My old Panosonic 32 inch CRT has 10 times better picture and I have never had to adjust the settings . . . . ever ! Sharp support was no help , they stated that this was a HDTV and I could not expect to get a decent picture on non-HD channels . This is unbelievable , why would anyone buy a TV that you can only watch 6 channels or so , out of 200 . Besides the HD channels only are clear on close up shots also , anything else is out of focus . I will give Sharp one more chance / call and then I will send this item back , as my return window will expite shortly .
    • 063 4  The television arrived within 5 days . We were very excited when the installation was completed . We hired a local firm to install the television and surround sound . The technician turned on the set and the interior glass was broken , which renders the TV completely useless . We had to box it back up and wait nearly two weeks for the TV to be picked up . I was so frustrated that I purchased the same set from a local vendor . I didn't want to take the chance that another set would be delivered that was broken . I suspect that the television was broken during shipment ! Sharp Aquos LC52D64U 52 - Inch 1080p LCD HDTV
