Casio Men's GW5600J-1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch

  • 005 4  The G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar GW5600J - 1 is probably one of the best purchases I've ever made ; or at least , one that has made me happy the most . First all I wanted , was to replace my old DW5400 ; which - by the way - still works quite well although its bezel felt in pieces several years ago and its buttons have become a little hard to push . This last fact is a result of the bets I used to hold in high school ( back in the 80 ' s ) about the effective shock resistance of my DW5400 . ¿ Do you remember that old commercial in which a G-Shock is hit with a hockey stick ? Well , mine had to overcome something similar but much more times that the one in the commercial . All I was looking then , was for the simplest model of the actual G-Shock series ; so I was about to purchase the DW5600E - 1V . Then I realized there was a solar and atomic version just for twenty something dollars more . I thought it was great to be available a solar version , since I've always heard that G-Shocks hold their total tightness just until you have to open them to replace the batteries . But here comes the truly important part of the story , which I hope a lot of people will find certainly interesting . . . I decided to get the Atomic Solar GW5600J - 1 because I also felt very attracted to the atomic feature ; however , I was sure it was not going to work for me because I live in Bogota , Colombia S.A . What the heck . . . I said to myself ; the price is affordable , it's going to be a watch for the life time and I'll be able to see it working whenever I go to the US . I'm not a very often traveler , but that was enough for me because I'm not an actual ultra accurate time fanatic ; just an average technology enthusiastic . The same day I got my GW5600J - 1 , I read the whole instruction manual ; I set all the functions and just in case , with a little hope , before I went to bed I left the watch on my desk in the synchronization position that Casio recommends . It synchronized perfectly with Fort Collins atomic clock , just as it has been doing almost every morning from more than a month ago ; all I have to do is being careful about not leaving the watch next to my computer or any other electrical appliance because it won't let the synchronization run . So this is it . If you are one of the persons that would like to purchase this watch but you're not sure if it will work in other countries different to the US or Japan , and in the other hand , you haven't found any customer review about this aspect ( as it happened to me ) , this information may be useful to you . At least in Bogota , Colombia , South America , the synchronization system of the GW5600J - 1 works , as it should work - I think - in Canada ( except Newfoundland ) and most countries of Central America .
    • 001 4  Multi-Band ( US and Japan ) , Solar , G-Shock , World Time , and great retro looks makes this a great watch . I've been looking for an Atomic Solar watch for some time and it appears that everything in the market is just too fancy for me . . . . many atomic solar watches are gigantic , others have compasses , barometers , thermometers etc and although those functionalities are great . . . . sometimes , most of the time , during weekends - when going hiking etc - - many features needed in a great outdoors watch are unnecessary at the pool , mall , movies , bookstore etc . The 5600 has all the right features : 1 ) solar ( 8month power reserve on one charge ) 2 ) atomic ( two zones US and Japan ) 3 ) power saving mode 4 ) back light ( the good backlight that makes the whole display glow ) 5 ) world time ( 29 cities ) 6 ) easy setup of two time zones 7 ) stopwatch 8 ) countdown timer 9 ) g-shock - - very tough 10 ) waterproof to 200meters ( good for scuba diving or the pool ) 11 ) replaceable band 12 ) multiple alarms 13 ) Auto sync with atomic or manual sync 14 ) Manual time set ( calenar to 2099 - - I'll be dead by then so that works I think ) On the con side , this watch is a bit big but for some reason its not overpowering on the wrist even for midsize guys - - it looks like it belongs there . . . . big but not huge and definitely not small . In its basic mode it tells : 1 ) time ( hours minutes seconds ) 2 ) day or month / date 3 ) pm ( or 12 / 24 hour time zone and whether you're in daylight savings time ) 4 ) how much battery you have 5 ) whether it has signal from the atomic time sync Overall , I feel comfortable wearing this watch and don't feel like I'm wearing a supercomputer on my wrist . It certainly won't impress anyone but it does what its supposed to to : tell time accurately without replacing batteries and without worry that it'll get banged up against something . This is a great watch . I owned one like it in the 80s and am very glad they updated it with modern technology while keeping the core aspects of it the same . I got from mytimepiece on Amazon ( quick delivery and exactly as promised - - great store ) . Only hard thing was going through the extremely wide selection of great Casio watches to find this one . I'm sure I'll get a Pathfinder at some point to go hiking etc and feel like I can survive in the wild with just it and a knife ( and to keep up with the joneses ) but for the mall , supermarket , pool , backyard , and for treks through Cambodia , Africa , Asia - - this will be my go-to watch probably for the next 10 years .
    • 002 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) This is a solid , well-built watch . Had I purchased it alone I would have loved it . The problem is that I had ordered two versions at the same time to decide which one I liked better . I got this one and the non-solar , non-atomic , 1987 - tech DW - 5600E at the same time to compare . Features the J has that the E doesn't have : Solar power Atomic time updates Multiple alarms & snooze alarm World time Auto backlight on when raising your wrist in the dark Features the E has that the J doesn't have : Day & date displayed simultaneously on main screen Countdown timer adjustable to seconds ( instead of minutes as on the J model ) Alarm can be set for a specific time , day or month , or any recurring combination of the two Smaller footprint for both wrist area and height Time is visible in all screens except alarm set The bottom line here is that the DW5600 - E does the basic task of a timepiece better : it tells you the time , day , and date more easily and with less hassle than the newer model . There is no selecting the home city , putting your watch at a certain position in the window at night , worrying about charging up the battery , and all the techno-tasks related to a supposedly maintenance-free watch . The fidelity of setting seconds on the countdown timer is crucial for fitness use ( a minute is forever when doing something physically challenging . . . ) , or photography ( I still develop film and 15 seconds can mean overdevelopment . . . ) , or cooking , scientific experiments , etc . The 5600 - E is lighter , smaller , and more comfortable to wear . The size difference may not seem like a lot on the spec sheet but the difference is tangible in practice . I like a slim , low profile watch and the 5600 - E wins in this area . It's also about half the price . The batteries on these things last ten years ; if you spend the extra dough on the solar model it will take you the rest of your life to make up the cost difference . Also , the accuracy of these watches is great - you may get out of synch by about a minute per year , something you can adjust when you switch back & forth from DST . Neither solar nor atomic is a compelling reason to spend twice the money . New in this case doesn't mean better . Unless you're a frequent traveler with world time being a prime consideration , or have a need for four daily alarms , the older 5600 - E does the job of telling time easier and more affordably .

    • 004 4  The Casio G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar GW5600J - 1 is all it is advertised to be . It's design is not sleek or sophisticated - - its utilitarian style is simple , rugged , down and dirty ; there is nothing pretentious about it . The watch body is shock resistant and water resistant to 200 meters with a gasketed stainless steel back . The band , should it ever break , is replaceable for a reasonable price . The lens is mineral crystal and scratch resistant . It's perfect for the weekend warrior , camper , construction worker or someone in the military . It's obviously not for the boardroom . Inside its protective , hard , black rubberized shell is a VERY sophisticated computer that is solar powered and receives ( automatically or on demand ) radio signals from the atomic clock transmitter in Colorado . The watch sports a chronograph , alarm , timer , and times for dozens of major cities . You can turn the daylight savings time on or off . This particular model is a derivative of the original series of watches G-Shock that do not have solar or atomic clock accuracy . What I particularly like about this version is that it is not gross in size and will fit most male wrists . It's comfortable and supremely practical . The contrast between the LCD digits and the background is excellent - even in moderate ambient light . There is a negative display model [ I own one ] , which is much harder to read . I highly recommend this watch . It's a great value .
    • 006 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) I expect this watch to last many , many years . For some reason , it seems to be very difficult for me to find a watch that has all the features I need / want . What I needed : digital , sweat friendly plastic band for running , stopwatch , countdown timer , sturdy . What I wanted : solar , countdown repeat timer . This one gave me everything except the countdown repeat function . That doesn't seem to exist on any solar powered watch from any brand . Positives : Intuitive function menus . Readable display with a useful backlight . Atomic auto time setting is novel and appreciated - I will never have to change a battery and never have to set the time myself . It is always right . Very comfortable when running . Very lightweight considering size . Negatives : Size is a bit thinker than I prefer but I have small wrists for a guy . The recessed buttons cannot be used with gloves - cold weather dwellers be aware - and are difficult to push bare fingered . But this could be a plus if you worry about accidentally pushing a button . Would really like a repeat timer but I couldn't find that feature on any solar powered watch . Overall : I would buy it again .

It just irks me all the time that this watch doesn't display the date and day of the week simultaneously ( just has a useless empty spot where the day's abbreviation should be ) . I wouldn't recommend this watch to a friend because I am eventually going to replace it with the GWM5600 - 1 or equivalent .

    • 012 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) This is a great watch . Like many of us , I own several ( 7 ) watches . This Casio replaces my older everyday watch , my Timex Ironman , which replaced my Heuer Autavia chronograph , which I have worn for 40 + years . This watch has the added ( and best ) features of a rechargeable battery ( that three days after removing it from the box continually indicates that it is fully charged ) and the self-synchronization with WWV . I wanted GMT capability , which is one of the features , but it requires that I utilize the 24 hour format for my daily time . Having lived in Europe , this is no problem and it is now the natural thing for me to do . The only bad feature is when the day indicator is enabled , it must be with the loss of the date indication ; you can have either separately , but not at the same time . I have a small wrist and I trimmed the band a little and this worked out perfectly . I like this watch very much and I look forward to many years of reliable and accurate service . Would I buy it again ? You Bet !

    • 015 4  Looks good , feels great on my wrist . UNLIKE the gshock mudman which i had to return because it was so uncomfortable . Why would anyone want to wear an uncomfortable watch ? This is pretty comfortable , kind of heavy if your not used to g shocks . About the solar and atomic tech . I haven't spent that much time looking at the manual because its telling me it updates the time every day at like 2 - 3 am . Thusly its just as accurate as your cell phone or computer that get the time updated every once in a while automatically . The solar thing is cool but it will go into powersave mode every once in a while and look like its dead . You just have to push a button and it comes back to life . That function is kind of cool because it helps it from going really dead . The functions like the timer and stop watch help me time my commute to class , something I just started doing on bike so this lets me know how fast I'm going relative to other routes . The time lets me know when fun time is over and I have to go back to work . All in all its pretty cool , but what I most like about it can be found on the cheaper non-solar , non atomic version . But if your like me and love technology you probably can't resist spending a little more and getting the cool beans version .
    • 016 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) Amazon offers these at the best price on the Planet . Ya gotta love a watch that keeps perfect time ( let's hear it for the guys at Ft . Collins who keep launching those satellite ' sync up ' signals ) and , of course , it runs forever on solar ( or lightbulb ) energy so I can see how much more yawn time I'll have to endure watching The Proposal simply by pushing the light button . Also , this watch provides super-accurate , atomic time so quickly switching modes to NYC , I don't have to go through the agony of computing 3 additional hours in my head to see how much further Wall Street will collapse on any given day . I can also do a loop with my lab , Caz , and make sure I'm back in 30 minutes in time to check the latest Law & Order rerun . It will even countdown on my coffee reheats with no problems ! My only problem with this watch is that YOU CAN'T HEAR THE GODDAM ALARM ! Casio put it much more politically correct ; It may be the tone we use that you are not hearing . ( Yeah , because the little blinking icon symbols are so much better ! ! ) Casio admits that they HAVE had complaints that there is no sound to the beep on this style of watch . Translation ? You're not tone deaf ; you can't hear it because it's not as loud as an ant farting at 50 miles ; so you're stuck w / the blinking icon . Casio has 5 alarm settings ( including the snooze function ) - - none of which are audible because the tone won't wake up Caz who barks at the wings of a hummingbird in Tampa . Otherwise it's 5 stars ! !

    • 018 4  I live right outside of Washington DC . The Atomic Sync happens every night with the watch sitting on my night stand - I don't have to place it by the window . The Auto EL works perfectly and has 2 settings 1.5 and 2.5 seconds - this was something I did not know but makes the watch even better . The solar charging seems to work and Hopefully this watch will last years and years without having to replace the capacitor that is charged by the solar cells . I had a spare 22mm nylon Nato strap so I cut notches into it and was able to get it under the 16mm lugs for this watch without having to get the casio strap extendors which would have made the watch more bulky . It wasn't the cleanest of jobs but I did burn the frays away and you can't see anything when the watch is on my writs . The final product is an awesome watch with an awesome , comfortable strap . It look very tough and I get a lot of complements on it . In a word I love my watch . It does everything perfectly and well worth the extra $35 over the DW5600E .
    • 019 4  I have used G-Shocks for 25 years . This model does not allow me to set the countdown clock on anything other than an even minute . Moreover , the countdown only allows up to a one hour countdown . I used to be able to set hours , minutes , and seconds on countdown . This to me makes the countdown timer fairly useless or at least not versatile enough to be be often useful . Another feature that used to be there , but is missing on this model is being able to see the actual time while the stopwatch is running . It used to display the time in the upper right hand of the display while the stopwatch was ticking off . This no longer happens . Moreover , the stopwatch no longer has a split time function , allowing me to stop the display while still having the stopwatch counting in the background . Overall this watch is at best a compromise . You get the atomic feature which means that it periodically synchronises with a cesium clock somewhere , but you lose features of the countdown timer and the stopwatch . Three stars at best .
    • 020 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) I bought my first G-Shock in 1984 not long after they were first released . I've always owned one since . They are a great watch which I use for sport , on weekends and when on holiday . The G-Shock Atomic is an enhancement on all previous G-Shocks . It is solar powered so the battery never needs changing and should you live in North America or Japan , the watch's time is calibrated by a signal from Colorado and two in Japan . The effect is that new batteries are never needed and the time is always correct . How good is that ? The style of the watch is retro . Essentially , it's the same design as my first G-Shock back in 1984 . This may not be to some tastes . Personally , I love it . Too many subsequent G-Shocks have looked cluttered . This one is simple with clean lines . Also , its controls are very intuitive . You don't need a higher degree in science to operate the watch . It's easy . If I was to have a criticism of the watch it's that it doesn't show day and day / date at the same time . This was the case in earlier G-Shocks . To change it now seems pointless . Memo to Casio : bring back the old arrangement where both features could be viewed simultaneously . Notwithstanding my one criticism , this is a great watch !

This is the only watch I can wear during all work or hard activity . I found out later that there is a smaller G Shock , the GWM5600 . But this G Shock doesn't look too big although its 43 mm wide .

    • 028 4  Tough watch at a tough to beat price . The display is extremely legible in all light conditions ( thanks to the backlight ) . The atomic clock function is neat and useful . I set my other clocks and watches by this Casio . I use the countdown timer every day . My only complaint , and it is nit picking , is that the day of the week should be displayed with the month and day . It is not a real issue since I normally know what day of the week I am in .
    • 031 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) I've had it for about 3 and a half months . I've bashed it pretty good on accident at least 5 or 6 times and it's totally fine . The band on the bottom of my wrist is a little worn . ( You can see where the plastic is shiny where I constantly rub it against the table ) I also live downtown in Chicago and don't have problems with the sync function . It doesn't consistently sync up everyday , but I've never seen it go longer than 3 days before it picks up a signal . The reception is much better when I'm outside of the city . The charge only drops to medium if I wear long sleeves over it for a couple days , indoor lighting will keep it charged even when its not sunny out . I have not taken it off since I bought it , its extremely durable , carefree , and accurate watch . I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for an everyday beater .

I am returning this to order GWM5600A - 3 which is $80 . GWM5600A - 3 displays date and day together . and also when you are at stopwatch mode , you can see the current time on the top . a neat feature !
    • 035 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) Cool watch , but recognize that it is extremely thick , and that the band is not very comfortable . Pretty rigid plastic , esp . close to the watch .
    • 037 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) I got this watch because two cheaper fashionable watches I bought failed in the past year . One due to battery and the face fell off the other . Both were under a year old . Watches tend to get beat up in my line of work and I often have to leave them in an unlocked bag or drawer so anything expensive was off the table . This watch isn't going to win you any fashion points but it has a certain retro digital flair . I have thin wrists and it doesn't look like a brick hanging off my arm . It's not too heavy or too thick and the strap seems very durable . As far as functionality you're getting all the features listed in the description . They aren't hard to access and you can generally figure out the basic workings without the manual . The real advantage to this watch is that it always tells the correct time , the alarms and timers are easy to use and it's seemingly bulletproof . If the reliability of the solar charging system is as rugged as other reviews say this will be the only work watch i need for years to come .
    • 040 4  This watch is as close to a perpetual motion machine as I'll probably ever see . It charges it's own batteries ; it adjusts itself to the correct time ; it's more durable and water-proof than my own wrist . If this watch doesn't please you , then you just can't be pleased .

SUN to 7 / 1 ) . - Countdown only goes to 60 minutes - Countdown uses increments of 1 minute only - Countdown requires that you press and hold one button , adjust ( + / - ) , press that button you held before again once , and press start - - 1 hold + 3 buttons isn't bad .
    • 046 4  I have read some low ratings on this watch due to it's lack of a simultaneous display of the day of the week and the date ; I read the reviews after purchasing , and began to worry . . . until the watch arrived . For anyone who read these same reviews and frets , don't . The only thing you have to do to see the day is press the adjust key , and to see the date again , press it once more . That's all . . . if that's too much work for you , then the last thing you should worry about is a watch . Also , if you need to be reminded more than one time in a day which actual day it is , again , you have more problems then simply telling time will solve . This watch is perfect for the minimalist . . . someone who is looking for something cheap , durable , unostentatious , and above all , functional , then this is the watch for you . It is under 100 $ , has a solar cell battery , and receives it's time from radio transmissions ( aka , atomic ) . The band is very comfortable , the light does not remain on for 5 - 10 seconds ( it simply flashes you the time , then fades ) , and there are even power saving functions and special auto-lighting modes available . 5 alarms ( 4 single and 1 recurring snooze alarm ) , a stopwatch , and a 60 - min max countdown timer round out the basic features . No compass , altimeter , or any of that fancy crap that will only be used in special circumstances . This watch is perfect for the everyday task , whether it be at home or on duty , it will take a beating and keep on ticking , so to speak . It really looks very nice , and I have no idea how Casio can get away with selling these at such a great price .
    • 048 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) This is my second G-shock Atomic , solar watch . The first one ran flawlessly for 7 years then wouldn't hold a charge so I was going to send it back to Casio repair center only to discover that it was cheaper to just buy a new one so I now have my second which is less than half the price of the first one . If this one runs as long as the first I will be a happy man - keep up the good design Casio it is a winner for sure . . . . . . and the best price around was Amazon , as usual ! !
    • 050 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) This is a very good watch . It's nice never needing to change the battery or worry about setting the time . The atomic time keeping and solar cell are nice to have .
    • 053 4  I usually only write reviews on things that I would definitely buy again , and this watch is no exception ! I bought this thing in mid 2008 and I've put it through its fair share of abuse . Everything from diving in saltwater to being knocked around while pouring concrete this watch has withstood countless knocks . The mineral lens is highly scratch resistant , and the casing is tough and rugged . Feature wise , it has everything I need on a daily basis . First : accurate time . Every night at around 12.04am it receives a signal from Fort Collins . One can also choose to manually update it . The solar paneling on the side of the display is neat , too . I've had this thing drained of power ( during the winter months when one tends to wear long sleeves it doesn't charge that often ) and left it in the sun for about 20 mins for a full charge ! Stopwatch , Countdown timer , alarm ( one with snooze ) , world time . . . this watch is just what a watch should be . I expect to keep it around for many more years to come .
    • 056 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) When the G-Shock came out when I was in gradeschool , I loved it ! And when they came out again with the classic design and added atomic and solar technology in it . . . i gotta have ' em . And I did ! Slightly thicker than the ones that came out back in the days but looked pretty much the same . The wrist band looks tough and even the casing . And I'm surprised that compared to the picture , It don't look cheap . You gotta see it for yourself , you can't tell how the actual watch really looks by just looking at the picture here . I went on to buy it anyway even if the picture made it look cheap . . . I just wanted to have one , that's why I bought it . But I ended up liking it a lot than expected . The new technology they put in the watch are very useful . No more adjustment , no need to replace battery , and the EL backlight is much better than the yellow bulb they have in the old days .

    • 060 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) I have never really used watches , always used my cell phone but with my blackberry i have to put a password after an amount of time , its annoying and robs the battery of much needed juice , Just to check the time . I had an old 1980 5600 in my drawer and decided to do some research on modern casio watches . After reviewing g-shock and amazon website i fell in love with the g-shock brand because of the durability , the style , features , and price . I bought the g-shock g - 300 green streetrider witch I loved so much i decided to get another g-shock that being the 5600j , I have to say this is one high tech watch . I have a smaller wrist but the 5600j fits just fine although I have to admit the g - 300 is more comfortable . That being sayd they are big but not to big or bulky , they are both a good size watch for a variety of different sized wrists .
    • 062 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) Simple to use , very reliable , ideal for work in rugged environments or sports . Atomic time is such a great feature , once you have had it you'll never want another form of time keeping .
    • 065 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) Purchased one of these watches for my son-in-law for the Holidays of 2009 , but after examining the watch and setting the home city , he almost did not receive it . The clarity of the display , feel on the wrist , backlight ( it is an illu - minator ) , ease of setting for personalization , were so much to my liking that I ultimatly purchased two other g-shock atomic solars for myself . He did get this watch , and likes it so much that he sometimes wears it to bed . He is im - pressed with the solar and automic features , but the comfort of the watch on the wrist , and its accuary , are the primary attractions for him . The eye appeal of the classic design does not hurt the equation , either . A second GW5600J - 1 watch will be shipped out by me to my brother-in-law shortly , and I am certain he too will be impressed by the features and personality of this watch , if , of course , I can again convince myself to part with it . P.S . - March 2010 - Just ordered and received a third GW5600J - 1 for a close friend's retirement gift . He will be very pleased with it , as were the other two recipients . As before , I still have to convince myself to give yet another one of these watches away .

    • 081 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) I have owned this watch for 14 months and it is still going strong . The solar battery meter arrived on ' medium ' but after a few minutes of exposure to daylight , the meter has not dropped below ' high ' since day 1 . I did leave the watch on the window sill for the first couple days before using it to allow maximum charging . My hope is the rechargeable battery will last at least 20 years or more . The reason I bought this watch instead of the battery version is because I do not like changing the battery . I wear this watch primarily for working out . I have run in 90 degree F , zero degree F , in the snow , rain , sun , and even ran a marathon with it - - the watch is still going strong . I wash the watch after each workout . The watch has calcium buildup or some white film on the crevices of the band strap caused by washing with water . The white film can be removed by scrubbing it , but that is the only sign of wear on the watch . It looks new , otherwise . The band strap is thicker and stiffer than my Casio Riseman . The band does not seem like it will break any time soon . I hope it will last a few more years . The watch does not show the time in stop watch mode , unlike the battery version of this watch . The atomic function syncs nightly at 12 , 1 , and 2 am . During the last Daylight Saving changeover , I noticed the time adjusted to DST when the watch synced at midnight instead of at 2 am . For me , that is not a problem , but for a couple hours the watch will be off by one hour . This is a solid watch and I would recommend for anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive solar watch .

    • 083 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) I have only had the watch a few days but going through the initial set-up and configuration everything seems to work as advertised . The watch came out of the box with a still accurate time hack . I only had to adjust the time zone . After going through the instructions I changed the time format to 24 hr time and initiated a manual synch of the time . Worked like a champ . I compared the time to various clocks on the web and it was spot on accurate . The watch automatically attempts to receive time signals early in the morning to re-synch daily . I was curious to see how this would work - - the instructions say to put the watch by a window for best results . I left mine on the night stand to see if it would work . Next morning it indicated a successful update occurred at 0203 . Same results the past few days as well . Very cool indeed . This watch has all the features I needed . An adjustable countdown , stopwatch , multiple timezones including Zulu ( GMT ) . Add the solar and auto update feature and I have the perfect watch for me . I will post an update as time goes by . My only concern is the overall life of the solar battery . Someone posted their disappointment about the face not showing both the date and day of week simultaneously . Would have been nice , but even as I near my dotage I can generally remember the day of the week - - the date , however , is another thing entirely . - - Update - - After wearing the watch for a few months I am even more impressed . The atomic update feature is great and works wherever I leave the watch overnight - even in the closet .

    • 085 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) Great watch for a good price . Syncs time flawlessly . Large digits easy to read without my reading glasses . I really like the auto light function . When the watch senses you are in low light you hold it up at a 90 degree angle in front of your face and the light automatically turns on . Buttons are recessed and a bit hard for someone with arthritis to deal with but once you get it set up and turn on autolight you don't need the buttons .

    • 091 4  This is a good watch . I use all of the functions ; stop watch , countdown , alarms . The stop watch is good for working out and runs / bike rides and I don't need to worry about taking it off before I shower . The face is easy to read and the size / shape is comfortable and not too bulky . The time is always accurate with the atomic time keeping and the solar charging so I have been keeping on schedule with my daily activities . I think the only adjustment / alteration that I would like to see is for there to be a way to keep the light on ( there may be a way but I haven't figured it out yet ) . Setting the alarms at night can be tricky . Otherwise I am happy with the purchase and have a watch tan line on my wrist to prove it .
    • 093 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) I purchased the Casio Men's G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch for three main reasons : 1 ) I wanted an inexpensive yet rugged watch to wear on weekends or when hiking , etc . 2 ) I love having the EXACT time . This clock automatically sets itself to the exact time using radio transmissions from the U.S . Atomic Clock in Colorado . This does not require any sort of subscription - it's free and is an automatic process . 3 ) Solar-powered ! No more batteries to change . The battery can last up to eight months on a full charge without further exposure to light . Why I love this watch : I had a G-Shock in the 1980s when I was in college . It was a great watch and was quite trendy at the time . And it was also indestructible and lasted for several years . That's why I love the retro-look of the Casio Men's G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch . It brings back some great memories of my old G-Shock - - it looks and feels like an old friend on my wrist . Again , I love having the exact time . I'm frustrated by having several clocks around the house ( wall clocks , bedside clocks , my windup wristwatch , clocks on the VCR , my car clock , coffeemaker , etc . ) all with slightly different times . I now use my G-Shock to set all of these clocks to the exact time . And that feels good . I love this watch and look forward to having it for several years to come ! : - ) Hope this helps !

    • 096 4  Does anyone know if this watch will auto-synch in Europe ? Yes , I know the details on Amazon say it only does so in the US and Japan , but other Casio watches ( like the GW800 - 1AV ) auto-synch in Europe too . Hard to imagine that they wouldn't standardize such a feature . I go to Europe way more often than Japan . Thanks , and sorry for the non-review question .
    • 097 4  This is a great everyday use watch . Its not elegant , but it does everything else right . A watch should be accurate : This watch syncs to the Atomic clock in CO . I'm in Cali and it works fine . A watch should be relaible : This solar watch does not run out of batteries ( ! ) , and is super tough , big rubber bump guards , shock proof , waterproof . To be a step above other watches , a watch should have the right features . The countdown timer is a feature I really like . The backlight works well . The auto-light feature is fun . . . It has 5 alarms which is plenty and settable chime . . For a mid-range price this watch is very good deal . For a utility watch , the only downside is if you lose you watches often , then I'd say go with a cheaper one , but I plan on having this one for a while .
    • 099 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) Not a great watch . - The tiny metal buttons are hard to push . - The countdown timer only goes up to 60 minutes . - The date / day aren't displayed together . • 101 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) This watch does not seem to be able to receive time updates in NYC , which is absurd . You can't be in building or by a computer or by a million other things when you try to sync . I have not been able to sync once . Watch works fine otherwise so far , but DO NOT by this watch for the time sync feature unless you live outdoors far from a city .

  • 008 4  This watch is great . It does exactly what the description says , it's easy to use , just don't lose the instructions . I purchased a Casio 93 H while looking for this watch , and now wear it all the time . I like the 93 H and the way the back light button works . I have the atomic-solar on stand-by . On the atomic-solar , I like the idea of the solar battery and always having exactly the precise time ; the only thing to replace is the strap every few years .

    • 009 4  WHEN LOOKING AT THIS WATCH , I READ CRITICAL REVIEWS OF THIS WATCH DUE TO THE BATTERY DYING . Watch was great when it worked , but sure enough now the watch will not hold a charge . I left it under light all day , etc . , etc . . And no matter what I do the watch will not hold a charge . Do yourself a favor and buy the original without the solar and atomic for less money . I think that it is the dw5600 . The standard 5600 that i have works great in every respect . The solar on this watch DOES NOT WORK FOR LONG because the battery does not hold a charge . And in my opinion the atomic is a gimick , because digital watches are extremely accurate - all of my digital watches remain within a minute of each other at all times . They are rarely off more than 30 seconds of for years .
      • 103 4  This review is from : Casio Men's GW5600J - 1 G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch ( Watch ) This watch is better than a Rolex { for me } . Did I mention it was a GREAT watch ? JB West Linn , Oregon

    • 023 4  This watch replaced my old G-Shock that I had since 1993 ( original battery too ! ! ) that went missing some how . This one seems just as good no problems syncing with the atomic clock it does it every night . Seems to charge as advertised . Plenty of useful functions , I really like the count down timer and multiple alarms . All the functions are very easy to adjust on the fly , I have big ( as in fat ) fingers and sometimes manipulating small controls poses a problem . Not so in this instance . Over all I would say this watch is a winner for me . I would suggest this watch to anyone with a need for a utilitarian , sturdy , and reliable watch that requires nothing more than strapping it to your wrist and getting on down the road .
      • 014 4  This is the only G-Shock worthy of replacing my original and most trusted G-Shock from the 1980s ( Yeah , I still got that one around ) . Same classic design , simple interface , but with new solar and radio features and some extra features like world time , automatic lighting and several alarms . In theory , this watch needs no maintence . . . ever . Cool . Also , the digital read-out has been slightly modified , making it more detailed , larger , and easier to read . I purchased this watch because I trust it most on the military job . . . but I find myself wearing it anytime I need the assurance of reliability and comprehensive functions . I recommend this watch to anyone who wants to have a go-to watch .
      • 026 4  I bought this after having its evil twin ( i.e . , same watch but with difficult-to-see negative display ) for the past year . Keeps accurate time , is hearty , comfortable , and has the basic features I want : count down timer , stop watch , alarm , and is water resistant . Priced right , too .
      • 034 4  good solid watch but not having day of the week and date at the same time on the display is disappointing . I am returning this to order GWM5600A - 3 which is $80 . GWM5600A - 3 displays date and day together . and also when you are at stopwatch mode , you can see the current time on the top . a neat feature !
      • 036 4  Cool watch , but recognize that it is extremely thick , and that the band is not very comfortable . Pretty rigid plastic , esp . close to the watch .
      • 059 4  Purchased this watch after a much cheaper casio atomic watch of mine went haywire ( you get what you pay for ) . I wanted a no frills watch I could swim with , run with , etc without haveing to think twice about if it told the right time . This is it . For all those worrying about scratching etc , get over it . jk This does exactly what it says and well . Highly recommend this peice to anyone whose life is highly reliant on keeping accurate time .
      • 067 4  I received this watch as a gift approx . 2 months ago and I love it . I currently own 5 watches ( Bulova , Fossil , Timex , Casio ) and this one is by far my favorite . I wear it daily and it is very comfortable ; not too big , not too small . The watch is very tough , looks tough , and the solar-atomic feature works great keeping the time exactly up to date . The display is easy to read and doesn't have a lot of clutter to distract from the simple design . I recommend this watch to anyone wanting a rugged , classic looking watch that functions flawlessly . And you can't beat the Amazon.com price .

      • 095 4  I have a fairly expensive analog watch , so I wanted a watch I could wear for on other , more rugged occasions . After some research , I went with this watch . I've worn it hiking , biking , and swimming . It has had a high charge for most of its duration , and never has any problem syncing . This is a perfect watch in my book , and an steal for $70 . Ryan
      • 098 4  I got this as a gift and am loving it ! It's easy to use , easy to figure out , easy to see without my glasses on ( I run without my glasses so that was a huge plus ) . Also , as a woman , I was a little concerned that it would be too huge on my wrist . No problem , I got used to it within minutes - - not really that big at all .

    • 038 4  I got this watch because two cheaper fashionable watches I bought failed in the past year .
      • 041 4  This watch is great . It works as advertised . If one is not fastidious about its looks , it can be worn for any occasion . Now I never have to worry about having the correct time , I have set it to update daily from the Colorado atomic clock signals .
      • 052 4  Just like other customers , I find this watch to be a great one , especially for work . I love the solar power and the radio signal automatic setting . Works right in the house , without setting it on the window sill . If you like having the exact time and not paying a fortune this is for you .
      • 074 4  This is a perfect minimal , old-school , no frills watch . If the description doesn't intrigue you , don't get it . Don't listen to all the over-analyzers who rant or rave about it . It tells the time and does it well . If you want to know the day or the date , it's easy to check that out too . If you kid wants to tell you how long he can hold his breath , it helps with that too . I like minimal and I like simple and this watch is perfect for me , but it may not be for you .

    • 042 4  This watch was chosen for practicality and utility rather than style and it delivers . It has additional features not mentioned in the ad copy , has remained fully charged without any special attention , is dead-on accurate , and seems to be just about immune to trauma . For me it serves well and I do not have to worry about it . I have had it for three months and I have neither complaints nor any worthwhile ideas on improvements . Good watch .
      • 029 4  This watch is really nice watch . The best part is that it contains so many features within its not too bulky body . It's good for both office and outdoor .
      • 051 4  This is a very good watch . It's nice never needing to change the battery or worry about setting the time . The atomic time keeping and solar cell are nice to have .
      • 087 4  I've only had the watch about a month but it works great so far and I have not run into any of the problems that others have at this point . It has all the functions you could want and recieves nightly updates to keep the time as accurate as possible .

    • 055 4  I got this one after looking at many digital watches . After having believed that analog watches where what real humans used , my eye sight started to deteriorate . I found it hard to see my watch face to tell time . I had Black face white hands , blue face silver hands both with no light Hard to read with no glasses . This watch is easy to read at night with no glasses , one click top right button , lights up , tell time , light goes out . Dead set easy ! Comfortable on wrist , takes a licking and keeps on ticking , sand , dirt , water , oil , alcohol , mud are no match . I love it .
      • 078 4  Best watch ever . I used to never wear a watch . Now I never take this one off .
      • 090 4  I own a dozen or so watches , including several Seiko divers , Casio and a Rolex . I typically find myself wearing this G-shock alternately with the Rolex Sea-Dweller . It's a great watch for knocking around on weekends , or to take to the beach or pool . Solar and Atomic means I don't have to worry about batteries or setting the watch . 5 stars , I highly recommend this watch .
      • 092 4  Watch fits great on the wrist . I will never have to worry again about replacing batteries . It just takes a couple minutes of direct sunlight each day to keep a full charge . Great watch !
      • 107 4  I liked the watch until the watchband broke and then tried to find a replacement . You would think Casio website would have information but no . A web search turned up nothing . Since all plastic watchbands eventually break , I will look for something that can be replaced . Be aware of this shortcoming .

    • 061 4  I have never really used watches , always used my cell phone but with my blackberry i have to put a password after an amount of time , its annoying and robs the battery of much needed juice , Just to check the time .
      • 047 4  Light weight , soft comfortable rubber band , slim profile with an original vintage look of it's grandfather g-shock , but alot more wearable and hopefully just as durable. They have always been outstanding watches over the years . They have proven themselves dependability wise which tells it all . Life used to be easier chosing one because they made only a few models and they were from Japan , now the Asian market has taken presence for making quality time pieces at affordable prices with Casio quality .
      • 049 4  This is my second G-shock Atomic , solar watch . !
      • 069 4  This watch has a substantial band and accurate electronics . The atomic setting feature is new to me and , so far , it has been spot on accurate timewise . Good choice for everyday wear .

    • 108 4  I received the watch and am very happy with it . HOWEVER , I have emailed the company twice , once a month ago , once 2 weeks ago , inquiring as to the availibility of straps for this watch as they are different in the attachment to the watch than any I have ever seen and will most likely be very hard to find . Results . NONE . I received NO answer to my mail .
      • 071 4  this watch is awesome ! the solar power is great , the multiple time zones is really easy to work and its a really handy feature , it looks great and it feels even better !
      • 105 4  I've been a G shock owner since the early 80 ' s and with this current one it will continUE . Simple easy to usre Sat . . . Atomic solar watch easy to read and as durable as the standard . easy to see if somthing OFF or on .
