Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
001 4 Canon's 790 IS is a great all-around point and shoot Camera . Canon has been playing with various mixes of features and prices with their newer models . The model numbers are confusing , but I've gone through a few new models recently and hope this extra info may help you .
Even though I do own a few older Canon DSLRs , for point and shoot I've been leaning more towards Nikon's Coolpix S series for the better pricing and some features . I did a lot of research into the various models in this price range . The 790IS stands up well against the competition . And for my needs it's more appealing than Canon's
SD890IS
,
SD950IS
,
SD770IS
or
SD1100IS
models .
* * The
Nikon Coolpix S52c with Wi-Fi
has all the good stuff that's included with the
Nikon Coolpix S52
plus a wireless antenna for uploading pictures without syncing to your PC . Either of these is a better value than the Canon 790 or 770 at about 30% less . To be fair though , they cost less for a reason , since Canon has owned this market segment for a while .
* * 10 megapixels is a good capacity on the higher end for point and shoot cameras . I wouldn't expect it to produce better pictures than 8 or 9 MP models . You may have good reason to set your image size smaller within the camera . However having the * option * of more megapixel's gives you certain large image format options you wouldn't otherwise have . Hence the meaning behind the much maligned statement , more never hurts . That doesn't mean you always want to use more , but it's nice to be able to versus other cameras . The 770 and 890 each also offer 10 MP and the 950 offers 12 MP , though at a much higher price . The Nikon S600 also has 10 MP . The 9 MP of the Nikon S52c was enough for me , so the 790 ' s 10 MP is a slight upgrade .
* * 3x optical zoom is also a perfect amount that tends to not result in blurred photos . The 950IS and the 870IS each has 5x optical zoom , but both have smaller screens and thicker bodies . Digital zoom is irrelevant to me .
* * Canon's image processing is faster and more reliable than on my Nikon . The built-in image stabilization , face detection and motion detection reduce blur . I simply wouldn't consider a Canon without IS at this point .
* * Just like the Nikon , and unlike many other Canon models I was looking into , the 3 inch LCD screen is too beautiful to ignore . No view-finder here , but with this beautiful screen you don't really need one . The Nikon's screen is best of all , and made from a nicer glass that seems more durable . But this Canon is just as big and very nice as well .
* * In terms of memory compatibility , Canon's lead this group . Just like the Nikon they support SD and larger SDHC cards . And they also support the wide range of MMC , MMC Plus , and HC MMC Plus . No usable card is included , but you can get a nice 8 GB SDHC for only 30 or 40 bucks .
* * All those common extras for in-camera editing are included here . The Canon has a lot of extra shooting modes too . These may aid casual users a lot , but you have to spend some time studying the manual and playing with them . I haven't used them all a great deal , but I'm generally happy with using minimal adjustments instead of the shooting modes .
* * The control wheel and buttons are intuitive but not as tactile as on the Nikon . I'm not crazy about the flattened buttons . But if you really want a Canon with a 3 inch screen , you give up the buttons . As for the wheel , those not used to it should have no trouble adjusting .
* * The other advantage of the Nikon S52 is the internal zoom . That means no waiting for the lens to zoom in and out , and no worries about the mechanical issues with those external lens extension cameras . It is possible to view pictures on the 790 IS without activating the lens by pressing the view button . But for taking pictures , the lens articulates out .
* * The slim chiseled body of this Canon is very comparable to the S52 and more attractive than the rounder and fatter 870 , 890 and 950 . I still prefer the Nikon body design , but the Canon definitely feels more solid in your hand .
* * Picture taking is better feeling on the Canon , with a more effective button design , less lag and faster shutter . It's true that some manual controls aren't available here , but it's a point and shoot . Step up to a bridge model like the Canon G9 or the Nikon P80 if you want more manual controls .
* * Low light performance is better with the Canon in auto but better with the Nikon when the ISO is set manually . On balance I think the S52 is better in this area .
* * The wireless upload feature is a nice extra on the S52c . Connecting to a wireless access point takes some time . This is not a feature I plan on using often , but considering even the S52c is significantly less pricey than the 790 it's almost like a freebee . Upload speeds are too slow for video , but for pictures it will do in a pinch .
* * The video recording features are pretty similar but slightly better on the Canon . The video quality is great on both and sound quality could be improved on both .
* * The
Canon PowerShot SD870IS
and the
Nikon Coolpix S600
each offer widescreen lenses . The 790IS is on the cusp of wide-lens aperture . The SD870IS is clearly the most popular camera in that group . Like the S600 it also has an externally articulating lens , so it's less compact than the S52 . The S600 is a serious competitor but the 790IS is still nicer looking and the 870IS is much more popular . The 870IS has a ton of in depth reviews out there , so look them up .
* * All of the ELPHs have proprietary rechargeable batteries . Plan on recharging them often and buying a spare battery . You'll also need to buy a little case for this camera . Some bridge models like the
Nikon Coolpix P60
, Canon PowerShot A590IS and
Canon PowerShot A720IS
offer the convenience of AA batteries . If you plan on travelling a lot internationally , being able to use AAs comes in handy .
This is a great camera , and probably the best Elph out there right now .
1 ) If you plan on shooting a lot in auto mode and want a thin camera with the 3 inch screen , the 790IS is the way to go .
2 ) If you think you might use the Wifi upload feature , prefer the internal lens or are looking for the best value , the S52c or S52 is the way to go .
3 ) If you don't need the 3 inch screen and just prefer Canon to Nikon , go with the 770 IS or the 1100 IS to save some cash .
4 ) If you need something that doesn't force you to use those proprietary batteries and chargers , check out the P60 , A590 or A720 .
5 ) If you want a little wider lens capabilities and don't mind spending a little more cash , look at Nikon S600 and the very popular Canon 870IS .
I know this is a lot to digest . I hope you can benefit from this info and the recent spree of camera purchases I've made .
Enjoy your new camera .
002 4 I'm getting married in two months , so I began looking for a camera for use on the honeymoon , to replace my Casio EX-Z57 .
I'm hardly a professional photographer ; mostly I take pictures of family and friends in party situations , or scenery .
Ideally my new camera would fit easily in my pocket , would have a large LCD screen suitable for reviewing pictures at parties , and would produce great pictures on the automatic settings . Manual settings are lost on me ; I don't want to mess with the F-stop setting , white balance , or focus .
I started doing quite a bit of research , and was a little intimidated by the number of models on the market . I created a spreadsheet to sort through the 25 most popular models on amazon .
My primary criteria was :
LCD Screen Size
Thickness
Resolution
Secondary Were :
Optical Zoom
Price
This camera ended up on top . I summoned my courage , added it to my cart , and hit checkout .
I received the camera 3 days later , and fell in love on the first day of using it .
Observations :
The 3.0 LCD screen is bright , and is clearly visible even in bright sun . I don't miss the viewfinder .
The camera is very small ( 3.6 x 2.2 x 0.8 ) and fits easily into my pocket . Surprisingly light , much more so than my old Casio , which was the same approximate dimensions ( 3.5 x 2.3 x 0.8 ) .
Pictures taken on the auto mode look beautiful , both on the computer screen and my 42 plasma . Colors seem accurate , and everything is very crisp . People's faces don't look washed out , or orange . For additionaly testing , I took pictures in bright sun , of faraway objects , and things up close ( about 4 inches ) , and everything came out great .
Video is surprisingly good , but VERY file sizes are large . My first video was about a minute and a half , and was about 150 Megabytes . Played on Playstation 3 ( the Casio wouldn't ) .
The 3x optical zoom works fine . I expected a little more for a camera in this pricerange , but I realize you have to sacrifice something for a camera to be this thin .
Concerns :
I was worried that I wouldn't like the new buttons , which aren't actually buttons at all , but similar to a Motorola Razr . They work well so far though .
The scroll wheel . It actually rotates , unlike one you'd see on an iPod . As a mechanical engineer , I know moving parts will wear out . Durability may be an issue , but on the plus side , it has really improved navigation through the menus .
Overall , it's a fantastic camera , and has exceeded all my expectations . I would reccommend it without reservations to any of my friends , and am looking forward to the pictures it will take of my honeymoon .
5 - Stars
003 4 Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
I did a lot of research before purchasing this camera . I have been disappointed and frustrated by the last three or four digital cameras I purchased , and got a little wiser this time . I mostly use my cameras for vacations and snapshots , nothing earthshattering , but I have , in the past , had a lot of trouble with blurry , vague , dark pictures , except with my very large digital Kodak , which is too big to take on an upcoming trip .
I purchased a 4G highspeed sd card and an extra battery and leather case along with this camera . When I received it , I charged it , actually read the manual , then started taking lots of photos , and I am having a great time with it . Maybe this will turn me into a half way decent photographer .
My initial battery charge is lasting a very long time , ( two weeks + , and it is still fully charged ) and the pictures are the best I have ever taken .
I am blown away by all the things this camera will do , and how easy it is to figure out , all in a small but sturdy package .
Most of all , I am super happy with the quality of the photos , and cannot recommend this camera highly enough . I was a little concerned initially at the lack of an optical view finder , but the screen is excellent , and its brightness level is adjustable . The camera turns on and is ready to use almost instantly , and focusses quickly . Pictures turn out sharp and clear , even with the flash , the zoom works easily with a very accessible button , and there is absolutely no red eye .
I cannot give you a very technical review , I am just a regular casual user .
I am very impressed , having fun , and cannot recommend this camera highly enough , it exceeds all my expectations .
004 4 Now first things first . I am upgrading from a Sony p - 72 3.2 mega pixel camera that I got back in 2003 . So there are many cameras out there that would be a big step up .
I was only interested in a point and shoot and it had to be compact for traveling purposes . I would love a DSLR but they are pricey , bulky and did not fit my daily needs .
I started reading around for a month or so to see what was out there and read all the pros and cons . I have read so much that I finally grew sick of it . In its basic form , all point and shoot cameras have + ' s and - ' s . It all depends on features that are most important to you and how you will be using the camera .
After many reviews , forums , and websites I decided to go with the Canon 790IS . I was very apprehensive on the quality of picture this camera would provide due to manufacturers pushing the limitations of the sensor . The sweet spot for most point and shoots are 6 - 8MP .
So what drew me to this camera ?
I was really impressed with the size , screen size , material that the camera was made out of ( not cheap plastic ) , and most of the automated settings which make the camera very easy / quick .
I didn't want to have to mess with manual settings on a point and shoot . My impression of a point and shoot is it is ready to go when I need it . Maybe 5 - 10 seconds to change the macro but that is it . If I have to spend much more than that , great picture opportunities would be lost .
So I took the plunge and bought it here off of Amazon in addition to a 8 gig Sandisk ultra II for pictures and a spare battery .
I am not going to go into what the camera comes with as other people have done a great job with that already .
After three days of waiting , I got the camera .
I was quickly impressed on the startup speed of the camera and quality of the pictures . I took 150 in the first day . The battery is still going strong .
I also tried the higher ISO settings and they will only be good on a tripod . The 3200 iso macro that is in the camera is really good . It downgrades the 10 MP to 2ish but makes a really dark shot seem to be early evening . I used it many times and it worked great . Way better than what I am use to . You can do it manually but need to keep the camera stable or you will get a blur .
I have had the camera for almost a month and I am very pleased with it .
You can't go wrong with the Amazon price . It is 100 $ lower than retail .
The camera is very well built and does an excellent job as a point and shoot . Even quick when using the flash . So again , you need to look at what you will use the camera for and what features are important to you . This one satisfied all of my requirements and I am very happy with my purchase .
As a side note :
I recommend getting a screen protector for the large screen . It will be easily scratched if you put in your pocket with change or other objects .
Just keep in mind you get what you pay for in screen protectors . Boxwave ones are highly rated and last forever . IT would suck to get a scratch across that beautiful 3inch screen .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
I bought this camera before going on a European Cruise ( I'm American ) .
Pros :
1 . Camera films great standard video ( 640 by 480 ) .
2 . Camera pictures are good under all lighting conditions and are 10 MP .
3 . Camera does TIME-LAPSE video , taking a picture every 1 or 2 seconds ( you choose ) to film scenes over a long time . I used it to video a home renovation project . It was a lot of fun to look at afterwards .
4 . Camera can sense which way you're holding the camera and shifts the image on the screen just like the iPhone does ! Great during playback of video and still shots to always fill up the whole screen .
5 . Camera has a lot of interesting special effects , like color swap , black and white with only one color developed ( ex : black and white landscape with blue sky showing as blue ) .
6 . Very small and easy to put in your pocket . It was great for my trip . I left my bulky 10MP SLR and Mini-DV camcorder at home , why lug that stuff around when this camera takes awesome pictures and video !
7 . Can take 1000 high quality pictures ( 10MP ) with one 4GB card or 45 minutes of video !
8 . The camera can track and recognize your face so that it always focuses on your face . This is amazing because you can watch it track ( little white square ) a person's face on the viewfinder as you set up a shot .
9 . HUGE screen . I didn't buy a case and the screen never became scratched .
10 . It shows you how much battery life you have left . Batteries lasted over a day with very heavy use of taking and viewing both video and TONS of pictures . I bought an extra battery just in case . Batteries were fully charged in under 2 hours .
Cons :
1 . It takes maybe 5 minutes to get used to the menu system , but after the initial learning curve it's easy to use .
2 . The 4GB memory cards couldn't be read by the photo shop or my SD card reader because the larger GB format is new and requires updated card reader equipment .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
I've had the privilege to test out a lot of different cameras for free over the last several years . Some I kept ( and paid for ) and some I returned . I have gotten to try a lot of canons and this one is the best I've used . I've got to try several A powershots and SD powershots and out of all this one seems to perform the best .
I have a Canon EOS 40D which has 10 megapixels and is an extremely good camera . When I looked at photos from this camera and the 40D , both being 10 megapixels I was shoocked at the quality of this small point and shoot for less than $200 . The pictures were almost identical in quality . Its really hard to see any differences . I like to test cameras with macro using coins . When you take a macro photo with this camera and the 40D on both you can see every little scratch , imperfection and dust . I was blown away by this camera at such a good price ( right now $183 ) .
Of course no camera is perfect . One thing I don't like about this camera is that while recording video , the zoom function is only digital zoom and not optical , like that on the Samsung nv24hd . But the picture quality is far superior here than the samsung . But this camera doesn't have HD recording and the samsung excels at that , video is incredible with a fast comptuer or PS3 .
Battery like is over 50% longer on this powershot than my last one , the SD630 . That camera is extremely good but the screen is low res and that camera is mostly plastic ( that looks like metal ) , this one is a metal brick . Amazing quality at such an affordable price ( $183 )

009 4 As a travel writer I spend a lot of time at Walt Disney World , and Canon PowerShot Digital Elphs are the most common cameras I see . Families seem to love them , because they're so easy to carry and operate . About the size of a deck of playing cards , each of these pocket cameras really do slip right into a pants pocket , and their rectangular designs make them easy to grip . Best of all , they all take good photos . ( How do I know ? Because I've actually gotten to use every one of these models . Nearly every day guests ask me to take photos of them with their own cameras , which most often are Canon PowerShot Digital Elphs . )
Here's my breakdown of the ten bestselling Digital Elph models . Any of the first six are superb choices :
1ST PLACE :
SD1100 IS
An update to the SD1000 ( see below ) , this 2008 8MP beauty adds image stabilization , a slightly longer zoom ( 38 - 114 mm ) , another MP of photo size and a small indent on the right side for a better grip . Plus it comes in colors ! My daughter has a blue one and uses it every single day . During school days the image stabilization made a real difference in her on-the-bus shots . With that heavy of use hers has gotten scratched up a bit , but the marks are small and hardly noticeable .
2ND PLACE :
SD870 IS
The ELPH to buy if you want a wide-angle lens . Slightly thicker than the SD1100 IS , this 8MP model doesn't have an optical viewfinder which makes it tough to use in bright sunlight , otherwise there's little not to love . My husband uses one as a comp camera , to compose shots for the travel guide The Complete Guide to Walt Disney World .
3RD PLACE :
SD770 IS
Just released in May , this 10 MP model is , in a way , an update of the SD1100 IS ( see above ) . I rate it lower because it costs about $50 more and doesn't come in colors . On the other hand , it has a longer battery life than the 1100 and features an improved LCD screen that is very easy to view . As for photo quality , I can't tell the difference .
4TH PLACE :
SD950 IS
There's a lot to like in this 12.1 MP camera . First off , it's gorgeous . The body , though a little thick , is titanium . An upgrade to the SD850 IS ( see below ) , it has a 3.7x zoom lens and adds manual controls as well as the ability to stitch together panoramic images . The only reason I don't rate it higher is the price .
5TH PLACE :
SD890 IS
Want a long zoom lens ? Here's your baby , a 2008 10 MP model with a 5x zoom . Also has the new bright LCD screen and all the other 2008 Canon goodies . The most expensive Canon PowerShot ELPH .
6TH PLACE :
SD790 IS
( The camera on this page )
With the same 10 MP image sensor and 3x zoom lens as the SD770 IS , this 2008 model stands out only for its larger 3 - inch LCD display and , as a result , lack of optical viewfinder . The rear controls are different , too , with a flatter design that uses fewer buttons .
7TH PLACE :
SD1000
In my opinion there's no reason to buy this 7.1 MP model . Released in 2007 , it's been replaced by the SD1100 IS ( see above ) . The SD1000 is a fine camera , but it doesn't have image stabilization , a key feature of the 2008 lineup . We have one ourselves , although we don't use it anymore since we got the 1100 .
8TH PLACE :
SD850 IS
The ancestor to the SD890 IS , this 8 MP Elph combines a 4x zoom and 8 MP photo size with an image stabilizer . Every button , dial and switch has a quality feel . Slighter larger than the other models here , it is a little tougher to pop in and out of your pocket , but if you have larger hands it may be just what you are looking for .
9TH PLACE :
SD800 IS
This 7.1 MP predecessor to the 870 doesn't focus well at its edges when set at its widest angle . Unless it's priced really cheap , get the 870 instead .
10TH PLACE :
SD750
The 2007 PowerShot flagship offers a light meter that adjusts for facial brightness , 17 shooting modes , some first-rate movie features and red-eye correction - - features that were innovative a year ago but are common in Canon's latest models . No image stabilization ; no optical viewfinder . Choose a 2008 model instead .

Every bit of hype I read about this camera has proven to be absolutely true - - it's the best point-and-shoot camera I've ever owned , superior to even the excellent film-based Elphs .
You simply can not go wrong buying this camera .

There isn't much to write here cause great reviews were given already but I just wanted to add my 2 cents about how wonderful this camera is . Its an upgrade for me , previously having the Sd 750 .
And since getting this camera , I haven't taken my fingers off it . Im just pointing and shooting at anything . And its so good 2 of my family members have bought this camera .
I would highly recommend this camera , its just a great point and shoot .

015 4 This camera is absolutely outstanding , and quite possibly magical . The first few shots I took with this thing look like something out of National Geographic . You don't know me , but lets just say , prior to this camera my pictures look like they were taken while I was intoxicated on a moving boat . Yes , that's how bad they were , and no , I've never been drunk on a boat . Was it the worthless Konica Minolta I was using ? Perhaps . But , I'm thinking magic has something to do with it instantly transforming me into a photographer . I've actually had people offer to BUY my photographs ! ! Me ! !
The color is vibrant , with superb clarity and sharpness , plus fantastic depth , which I think can be the hardest thing to achieve in a photograph . The Macro settings are unreal , and the focus and lighting are exceptional without a flash . The battery life is really long , and the video quality looks better than my video camera , and even has better sound . The screen is really impressive .
For the most part - it's easy to use ! ! It did take me awhile to learn all the camera's functions and experiment with settings because it was significantly more complex than my old camera . I don't know what half the manual settings do , so I just stick with the settings in Auto mode - which has wonderful options . It works great . I love how this camera functions - and I am SOLD on Canon . My boyfriend had an older generation of this camera and his pictures were amazing , so I just went ahead and bought this without even holding it first .
I truly couldn't be happier with it , and I can't imagine anyone not absolutely loving it . Its tiny , but packs quite a punch ! ! I just wish it came with a case . . .
016 4 I just got my first Cannon today and I'm impressed with the technology which went into this camera . I did a lot of research on this camera before I bought it . Unlike the lousy SONY I owned before it . Cannon is the only brand of digital camera's that is consistently top rated for picture clarity . After having the Sony for 6 mos . I can really appreciate that characteristic . There is too many cool feature's about this product to list so you'll just have to read the spec's on it yourself .
Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
However , the feature's which stand out the most are the stitch assist and the computer-less printing abilities . The stitch assist allows you to bridge multiple picture's together to create a panoramic picture . You don't have to worry about lining the pic's up perfectly either , the camera automatically does it for you . Secondly , The picture bridging ( computer-less printing ) allows you to crop , select multiple images for same page printing , select paper size and image size all from your camera . Face detection on this little gem is also pretty outstanding . While detecting a face , it magnifies just the face for your approval before you take that 10 mega-pixel work of art . So , before you waste money on any other brand , do your own research . You'll see , Cannon reign's supreme !
018 4 I spent a lot of time researching the canon cameras before making my selection . ( I had a canon camera that I loved a few years ago until it stopped turning on . . . then I switched to a Sony cybershot and was NOT satisfied , so I wanted to go back to Canon ) . I've had the camera for about a week . . so far it's been taking great pictures . I've been taking the same shot ( on auto ) with the Sony and the Canon to compare the pictture quality . The Canon has been getting the shots a million times better than the Sony . ( Some of the pictures on the Sony just came out either all black or all white ) .
The Canon has been also doing a great job of using the flash appropriately on auto mode . . . I also like that it's been taking clear pictures even if the subject is moving .
Some of the pictures I took on high ISO did come out focused but grainy . . . but I'd rather have a grainy picture than a completely blurred or unrecognizable picture like I had with the Sony ! !
It took a couple days to get used to the controls . . . the turn wheel does take a little bit of time to get used to the sensitivity , but I feel much more comfortable with it now . There are plenty of modes and options in the manual mode if you want control over your pictures . . but I have to say , so far I've been very impressed with the auto setting . The kids and pets setting has been also impressive to catch moving subjects without blur !
I was looking for a reliable camera to take good pictures even indoors and with moving subjects . . . So far so good ! !

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
We have been using this camera for over 2 weeks . All is very-very good . The only complaint is that filming movies is not great - no zoom which messes with the focus . Beautiful design , great metal case , super clear screen , nice menus , good battery life , etc . IS ( image stabilization ) works VERY well , no blurred images . Images have vibrant color and have very crisp details . It is easy to accidentally change shooting modes by touching the new function-wheel on the back of the camera . I am used to checking status before shooting , but my wife has missed many shots because she accidentally changed to a manual mode .

Update - It is now May 2010 and we are still using the camera on a regular basis ( proud parents of 3 little kids ! ) . About 2 years of use and no defects or issues . We are still not happy with the limited movie mode ( focus and zoom ) and we have had few issues with the dial on the back . . . seems we are used to it . In lower light , indoor settings , we have not gotten as many good pictures as we had with our higher end Canon S3 , but this is only a point-shoot camera . We still recommend this camera and we get very nice comments from those that see it in use . It is very portable , excellant construction and usually good photos result .

021 4 I've owned a great many P & S cameras . I love the quality of the photos that come off of this camera . Although , ISO 800 and above are noticeably grainy . So I tend to stick with the lower ISOs .
It has nice features on it where you can select a color in a scene and only that color will appear vibrant while others will be black and white . Also like that you can edit photos right in the camera and change the color cast of the pictures right on board . The face detection feature is good too , even close up shots don't wash out the face when the flash fires .
The only thing I wish were better was the IS system . I think Sony has Canon beat with that , but that's just my opinion .
This is a great camera , small , slim , sleek . I would recommend it to anyone looking for a P & S now . But do , do research to find out what camera is best for your needs . ( I frequent [ . . . ] for that information )

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
After leaving the Canon family ( SD630 ) and trying Panasonic ( DMC-TZ3 ) - I'm back ! The SD790IS is the best Canon Point & Shoot I have tried . This is a great camera . If you would like a simple Point & Shoot with the ability to allow many manual adjustments - this is the camera to have . It's a small footprint with a lot of quality !

025 4 The 790 SI is an excellent little camera . The picture quality is amazing . Sharp , crisp , and the 10 MP resolution produces images that are good enough for posters . The start up time is fast and so far the battery life seems pretty good too . The display on this camera is as good as it gets and the image stabilization and face detection works like it should . The camera is obviously very well built and the metal casing looks and feels great . The camera itself is tiny and fits well in a pocket but it is a little on the heavier side . There are not many dowsides to this little thing . The camera controls are not completely intuitive but I got used to them very quickly and was able to figure out most of the options within an hour .
All in all you get what you paid for with this camera . Its one of Canon's top of the line models and it performs like a top of the line model . You won't regret spending the money once you see the images that this camera produces .
026 4 I've only owned canon powershot cameras . This is by far the best powershot camera that canon has producd . I've had minor complaints about past canon powershot cameras . However , this particular model has no flaws . I've owned this particular model for a couple of months now and it's honestly an amazing camera . It's very easy to use and the durability of the camera is fantastic . Most importantly , the quality is top notch .
I find it very difficult to imagine anyone not liking this camera . It's great in all aspects of a digital camera . Definitely buy without hesitation .
027 4 I originally purchased the SD790 as a birthday gift for my wife as a replacement for her Canon SD600 because I remembered her enthusiastic response upon seeing a 3 viewing screen . When she received it , it soon became clear that her disappointment at the camera's greater overall size and weight , its rather off-beat flat-panel styling , and its more complicated setting system ( a rotating ring ) made a greater impression than the 1 / 2 larger viewing screen .
So I exchanged it for the camera I had at first thought was definitely the inferior choice : the SD1100 . When the SD1100 first appeared , several camera review sites ( and Cnet ) greeted it with moderate enthusiasm at best , suggesting it was little more than a cosmetic touch-up ( because of the blue , pink , brown colors ) of the SD1000 . But that's only half true , because the SD1100 , like the SD790 , incorporates face and motion detection as well as image stabilization . Moreover , the most popular and trusted Consumer Magazine has recently called it the Best Buy available in a point and shoot model of any brand . And if a clincher were needed , Amazon's pricing provided it ( currently a difference of sixty ) . So I ordered the SD1100 ( in silver , of course ) and , among other things , have become more aware of the advantages that a viewfinder can provide ( excessive sun will still wash out the image on a viewing screen ; a larger viewing screen is more prone to breakage , in which case a viewfinder becomes indispensable ) .
I wish I could give the SD790 4 and 1 / 2 stars because the pictures are equal in quality to the SD1100 ( and if it makes you feel any better , the lens boasts an extra 2 megapixels ) . But the SD1100 adheres more closely to the size , weight , and styling of the Elf that has become a classic - - and along with the speed , dependability and convenience , it produces pictures to my eyes that are second only to a full-sized SLR camera . On the other hand , if you plan to limit your shooting to indoor portrait photography and to blow up your shots much beyond 10 X 12 , the SD790 is a compelling choice among the Elves .
028 4 Just bought my first digital camera after only shooting film slrs for over 30 years . Picture quality is outstanding and the output is as good as the film prints you're going to get from the average photo shop .
It's chock full of nice features such as time lapse , multiple shooting modes and more .
I've spent some time using photoshop to inspect the jpegs that come out of the camera and I'm really impressed . It's not going to replace an slr , but for just knocking around and taking pictures it is outstanding
029 4 This camera really takes nice pictures . I've come up from several canons , most recently the SD1000 which I loved . This camera takes superior pictures if you use the highest settings . They are crisper with greater detail and slightly richer color . In fact some pictures are just extraordinary . This cameras weakness is in low light settings , although if you were in manual mode and experiment a little you can get fairly nice results at night , even indoors . HOwever the camera shines in exterior settings in the sunshine . What I don't like is the new experimental interface . It's very cumbersome , particularly the wheel . It's no ipod touch wheel . Intsead you find yourself spinning it around accidently changing your flash settings and ISO settings while you try pick the right mode which usually takes several trys . Very frustrating . The other buttons which are not buttons work although they don't have the same satisfying feel as the older style . Also the only way to change mode is to use the wheel and you cant access using the menu as you used to do . Can't figure out why they did this . This also means that if you use this camera with the waterproof case . You will only be able to toggle between two modes .
The only other con with this camera is the somewhat dumbed down settings . You get a little flexibility in manual mode but no where near what one would want or would have been easy to build into the software . After all Canon was doing it in their early cameras five years ago . Otherwise an awesome camera which will not disappoint visually .
030 4 I ruined my ` Nikon 7900 ' 7.0 megapixel camera after three great years by getting it wet . This was upsetting as I had the SCUBA encasement for that model and a ton of accessories . My nephew turned me onto the ` Canon SD790IS ' ( as it also has an optional SCUBA encasement ) and I am very happy .
It has more megapixels ( 10.0 ) which is top of the line for pixel qualtiy meaning crisper pictures with a larger 2.5 - inch LCD monitor and tons of extras . There is an Optical Image Stabilizer which reduces the blur of any camera movement , even with low light . There is also a cool feature called , Face Detection WB which means the camera concentrates upon faces , then it calculates white balance for the best colors and tones . You can also just select ONE face among the group to highlight ( think Birthday parties ) !
There is a cool red-eye correction that identifies and corrects red-eye when pictures are taken . You can also later detect and correct red-eye during image playback .
The camera is smaller and thinner than my previous Nikon and it fits very easily into any pocket ( be careful ! ) . It's quick , easy and responds readily . It is a great value for the price . The pictures are just as good ( maybe better ) than my old camera . I can't wait to go diving now so I can try the underwater encasement ( accessory ) . You can also buy a less expensive underwater encasement accessory for up to 15 feet of depth for snorkeling and there is a waterproof encasement accessory for rainy day shooting .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
Great camera . It has a very nice feature set , but that isn't the selling point . The best part of this camera is that you can just turn it on , and take amazing pictures . You don't have the to tweak anything , just point and shoot . If you want to tweak , you can , but you don't need to .
I also like it since it is very small . It fits into pockets without a problem . The build quality seems great . The camera feels solid .
I would recommend this product to anyone who needs a new camera without hesitation .

034 4 Great camera ! Beautiful clear lcd screen even in bright sunlight . No more point and hope you have everyone in the picture . Even with my old shakey hands I get a clear picture . That's when my wife lets me use it . grand kids also sneek it out when Grannys not looking . Really great buy . Have had four digitals before and none were as easy to operate and fun to use .
8x10 enlargements clear as a bell .
036 4 I went with the Canon SD790 after I dropped my other digital camera on its protruding lens , thus rendering it useless . After using the SD790 for a while , my accident feels like a godsend .
This camera is speedy making spontaneous moments easy to capture . And all those memories will look great too , the image quality is unmatched by any other digicam I've ever owned . It's 10.0 megapixels , but I typically shoot in 6.0 megapixels and these photos look much better than my previous 6.0 megapixel camera .
Battery life is superb . I took almost two-hundred pictures and the battery was still mostly charged . All the different scene modes are very appreciated , but some of them I doubt I will ever use ( i.e . , fireworks , underwater ) .
Not to mention that this is one of the sexiest gadgets I currently own . I would highly recommend the Canon SD790IS .
037 4 There is a fixed amount of improvement in a camera , and this is obvious in the SD 790 . The quality is impressive and the camera is small , compact and feels right in hand despite being so small . The screen is amazingly large , giving the photographer unexpected amounts of image when previewing pictures . The quality of the screen is very good and the image stabilization makes a huge difference .
However , one must be careful that these qualities start eating at the robustness of this camera .
For example , the camera is compact and to achieve a size smaller than a deck of cards , the viewfinder had to go . That limits the angle from which you can preview and you may get some pictures wrong because you look at the previewing screen from an angle that you can't see well . The compact size limits the length of the zoom also . One would know this from researching the specs .
To get a large screen you expose a large surface of . . . well . . . LCD panel . This becomes easier to break and as I sadly learned , once that is broken you can't use the camera since it does not have a viewfinder .
038 4 As a proud owner of a Canon Rebel XSi DLSR , I was looking for something a bit more compact to use . While the XSi is truly a great camera in its class , my wife is intimidated by its size and functions . And with two young children running around , its also not practical to carry around everywhere . So to please the wife and ensure a camera would be available , I decided to purchase the 790IS to have a go-everywhere camera .
The 790IS is a nice looking camera encased in a metal shell . Its offers 10MP images using Canon's DIGIC III processor which produces stunning pictures for point and shoot . It has numerous automatic and manual picture taking settings and the menu is intuitive . It allows for video recording with various settings within , most importantly Standard , E-Mail , and Time-Lapse recording . Standard recording produces stunning video but at a cost ; it uses large amounts of memory . The camera features a 3 high resolution screen with tilt control which orientates the pictures to the position of the camera being viewed . Automatic Focusing , Face Recognition and Image Stabilization ensure your taking the only sharpest pictures . Canon completes the hardware by including a 32mb SD Card ( although small it something to start you off with ) and the software necessary to view , save and edit the photos you take .
An interesting ability of the camera is its Auto-Stitch feature . Basically it allows you to take several pictures and then stitch them together to make a giant panoramic or 360 degree view picture .
I am also impressed with the battery life of the camera . I was worried that battery life would be an issue with a sub-compact camera especially when it uses a proprietary format . But I have been amazed by how many pictures this has be able to take before needing a charge . It also holds the charge quite well over a long period of time .
I can only say that the camera performs perfectly for a point and shoot type . My wife and I are very happy with it and would not only recommend the 790IS but any of Canon's products .
039 4 First of all I have to say that I did A LOT of research . It took me about a month to decide which camera I wanted and needed .
I had previous experiences with Panasonic and I wasn't satisfied at all , the IS is just terrible , the flash was terrible and over all I was very disaspointed .
So let's get to the point , this camera is absolutely superb . The IS is just PERFECT , the flash is amazing , the 3 LCD is amazing ( the viewfinder comes unnecessary with this LCD ) , easy to use , nice price , wonderful features and over all a great camera .
In termns of the battery life I have to say that I've been using this camera for about a month now and I've only charged it a couple of times and I use it all the time .
I couldn't be happier for the desicion I made , I am really happy with this camera and I would definitely recommend it .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
I upgraded from a 5mp EasyShare which was really hard for me to capture anything with since I have a little girl who's constantly on the move . Every picture I would take with the 5mp would end up with head turned , closed eyes or blurry . It was just not fast enough . I have wanted one of these camera's for a few years now so I finally got around to upgrading . The picture quality is fantastic and the speed is sufficient to actually take clear pics of my daughter where you can see her eyes ! The red eye reduction setting does slow it down a little so I've been keeping it off and just editing it later . I also found out after I bought the camera that my aunt , who is a professional photographer , bought the same camera to have an extra point and shoot . I've had the camera about a month and I'm very happy with it .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
I purchased this camera , and upon first using it , thought it was great . I took it on vacation and all the pictures in the LCD screen looked amazing . I got home , uploaded them and had them printed , and all my pictures turned out blurry . I checked and the settings were on the highest quality . There are a ton of different settings , but how to use them is confusing . I haven't had the same problems as other people with the camera falling apart . I've owned other digital cameras in the past that have been straightforward - very point and shoot oriented , which took far better pictures than this one . A friend of mine and my mother also bought the same camera , and have had similar experiences . I feel there is a way to get it to take great pictures , but it shouldn't be so hard to figure out . I've used the camera several times since that first vacation , trying different settings , and asking people who know about cameras how to use it . I have yet to be impressed with any of the pictures I print out .
047 4 I am an amateur photographer . I have 2 kids . I am a coach . I edit and make a lot of videos . I have an eye for action shots , especially for soccer and biking . I have a Nikon D40 . My only problem is it is huge . I wanted something I could tuck into my purse or into my bike pouch that would be pretty comparable to my Nikon .
I've purchased a few of these small cameras and hated them instantly . I hate grainy / blurry pictures . They would do well outside and inside they would be terrible . This camera is not like those . It does great action shots , no blur . Unlike my Nikon D40 it doesn't focus on the subject and blur everything else it stays focused on the whole frame . So I have this picture of my son jumping into a pool , mid splash , and my daughter's eye's scrunched closed and perfectly in focus . I love that !
I read a review that mentioned how quickly the camera boots up . That is very true . The second you turn on the camera , you can start clicking . That is very nice , especially with kids you never know when they are going to do something cute or how long they will continue to do it .
It is very easy to use . Takes great pictures . It is inexpensive . Try it ! I take about 1000 pictures a month so we'll see how it handles the abuse .
049 4 I absolutely love my new 790 ! Takes amazing pictures , and the video recordings are great also ! My favorite feature is the Color Accent , you have to try it out . It allows you to take pics in black and white and color accent any color you chose . It is small , and I can take it everywhere . I also purchased the Canon PSC - 55 Deluxe Leather Compact Case for it and it's a perfect fit ( if you want a case that will hold extra battery or memory card , this case is not for you ) . You won't be disappointed with this camera !
051 4 Pros : Lots of features , great value , solid , small form factor , beautiful lcd screen .
Cons : May require a bit of a learning curve to get used to it . Spin wheel slightly too sensitive .
Overall , highly recommended !
053 4 I've had this camera for about 8 months and I keep it with me constantly - I was shocked to see the price had dropped to well below 200 , since back in April it was $350 ! As other reviewers have indicated , it takes wonderful , sharp , brilliantly colored pictures and there are times I can't distinguish it from my SLR . This one is so convenient to carry with you , you will always have your camera handy ( which is half the battle when it comes to taking great pictures ) . A few minor quibbles - - and these are most noticeable if you compare the 790 to a digital SLR , rather than to another point and shoot . I don't like to use flash if I can avoid it , and without it I found the low-light performance on high ISO auto ' is not ideal - - the camera is perfectly usable up to about 800 ISO , and after that it becomes a little grainy but the images are still usable . One unexpected bonus - - the video mode is quite impressive in low light , and in a pinch you can always use that instead if trying to capture a very dark scene . On the opposite end of the spectrum , you may have to scale back the flash if you're taking close ups or macro shots . Do yourself a favor and browse through the manual - there's a lot more to this one than just point and shoot . My major complaint is that it does not offer a RAW option - - that would have saved some ' missed ' pictures - - there are firmware tweaks for other models , but to date - nothing for the sd790is , so if RAW is important to you , you may want to look at a different model that either offers raw or can be more easily hacked . For the most part , however , the large JPGs are fine and can be adjusted in photoshop , so the lack of RAW may be a non-issue for most people .
I've been very pleased with the purchase - - would have been even happier if I could have saved the considerable difference in price , but . . . hey , I needed it then and have enjoyed it every day since the purchase , so yes , it was still worth it . I use a 4 and an 8 gb card and have never run out of room - even when using video and the highest resolution option for still images . The battery seems to last longer than my previous canon point and shoot . It's very sturdy and it feels good ( substantial ) in your hand . Screen is gorgeous . Every once in a while I miss a shot - usually because of lighting - - but it's pretty fast and generally keeps up without excessive lag time . The wheel takes some getting used to - I still have mixed feelings about it , but it's not a deal breaker . I like the weight and the feel of the camera - it feels substantial in my hand ( but not heavy ) and the IS helps minimize camera shake . All in all , I give this a very positive 4 stars as a CAMERA in general , but give it 5 stars when evaluating it as a tiny point and shoot camera . You can't fairly compare this to a thousand dollar model - but in many respects the images it produces are just as good * ( compared to a 30D ) , and it's certainly a lot more convenient . The camera you HAVE WITH YOU is better than the one you left home because it was bulky / heavy / needed external lenses , etc . Good choice - even if you already have a bigger camera this could be a very handy ' extra ' .
054 4 I bought this to replace an SD700IS that gave up the ghost ( CCD problems ) after 2 years of hard use . The SD790IS is a big improvement in a lot of areas .
The facial recognition feature is great for candid shots . It was sometimes tricky to get faces in focus on the old camera . With this , it finds the faces and uses that to focus on .
I also like the new controls . No more knob to clunk back and forth . The most used functions ( video , profiles , manual ) are accessed via a sliding switch . And there's a dedicated button to go to picture review .
The only downsides are lack of an optical viewfinder , and less optical zoom than my previous camera ( 3x instead of 4x ) . So far I haven't missed either .
055 4 This has been the best camera I have ever used . The image stabilization is awesome . It really does stabilize the shakes . The auto feature on this little camera is really good that I never had changed the mode of shooting anywhere . This camera is very good for someone who just wants to click pics on the go . The different modes in the camera make it even more attractive . I would strongly recommend this camera to anyone .
Note : Buy a high speed SD card for faster shooting .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
We bought this camera in February 2009 after much research . The camera takes pretty good pictures , although we did have many instances of blurry photos . The biggest issue , however , is the construction . The screws that hold on the side panel ( which is what the wrist strap is attached to ) fell out , releasing the panel & wrist strap from the body and the camera fell to the ground , causing some damage ( warping ) of the right corner and body . On careful inspection , we also noticed the screws on the bottom of the unit were coming loose . Then just a few days ago while using the camera , we noticed that the switch that allows you to switch between camera and video mode was loose and would no longer move . Now the camera is stuck on picture mode and cannot be switched to video mode . I expected much better quality from Cannon and would NOT purchase this camera again .

disappointed in the durability . The Camera takes great pictures unfortunatly it began lossing screws and falling apart after only a few monthss of very light use .
068 4 I got this camera as a gift for christmas 2008 . Usually I use Nikon so I was a litle reluctant to think of this one as nothing more than just basic . Wrong ! It took me a a day or so to read the manual and get used to the settings but after that I was shooting classics . If you want a day / date stamp it will do it but only on the lower pixel end . If you want to shoot 3648x2736 or something like that you won't be able to set a day / date stamp on it . Only with the software when you're done shooting . I shoot on the high end and then order 11x16 or 16x22 photos or poster prints . The pictures framed look just like pictures taken at a portrait studio . Even the 1600x1200 look great blown up .
I am not very keen on photo techniques for shooting pics . But with this little camera I enjoy learning and making history moments with my 2 year old son . The camera even has a a video and voice cam . I use like an 8GB SD card when I do that so I have more storage space . The LCD screen is really excellent I am not kidding .
I love setting the camera on kids and pets for those fast action shots . Ever try catching a two 1 / 2 year old standing still ? It ain't easy let me tell you . I took him to a studio before I bought this camera and the guy shot like 150 photos to get just three good ones ! Now if you was using film you would be spending a ton of money trying to get a good shot . With this camera you can shoot continuous rapid shots ( if you want ) or close ups and when you're done you can delete the ones you don't want or upload them to your computer and edit from there . I shoot and transfer to my computer and order prints online . Or take them into a dock at CVS drugs . ( A cameras pictures are only as good as the company that developes them . )
This one is made in Japan . I have not had any problems with it even after my son knocked it on the floor from my book cabinet . My portable DVD player didn't fair so well . If you want to test something see what happens after a two Y.O . gets a hold of it .
There are 100 ' s of cameras on the market but this is a good dependable little camera . Shop around read reviews before you buy .

I wouldn't pay more than 299.00 for it . I paid that much but I have seen them as low as 235.00 . Happy shoot'n !

I just took this camera to Prague , and I have to say I am really happy with my purchase . This camera is extremely good at taking sharp pictures . In the Cathedrals , and other locations that did not allow flash photography I was able to take great shots in low light after disabling the flash - this was awful on my previous camera . The camera is complex and I was still learning as I went along on my trip but the images are amazing - just might want to spend some time before you take it on a long trip . Also its small enough to easily stick in your front pocket so that you can forget about it until you want to pull it out for a picture . I have no issues recommending this camera !
072 4 Not sure if anyone else has this problem but even with the no-red-eye mode turned on all of my pictures have horrible red eye . I've tried the red-eye correction post processing feature and it works maybe 50% of the time , and only at the right distances . I've also tried turning it off and same issue . Besides do I really have time to go and touch up tons of photos when my other cameras don't have this problem ? Anyone else have this problem and find a setting combination to fix it ?
Everything else about it is great for a pocket point & shoot , just don't use it for night-time photos of people without great lighting .

Nice look and feel to this camera . Great display size . Takes wonderful pics with little effort . IS feature seems better than my Panasonic DMC-FZ7 . One minor issue . . . . wheel for adjusting scenes setting takes a fine touch to operate , esp if you have large fingers or a heavy touch . Overall a nice small camera for easy carrying and everyday photography .
080 4 I am an amateur photographer and this is my fourth digital camera . I've had two Olympus and one Nikon before and this is by far the best of all them .
Very good camera all around , it fulfills all expectations that you can have for a camera in its price range .
Excellent picture quality in all light conditions , easy to use , good battery life and very good movies in 60FPS , 640x480 resolution are among its much pros . It complies with all manufacturer's specifications , although perhaps you don't like the lack of a viewfinder or the poor optical zoom ( only 3X ) .
The only con I've found so far : the wheel texture is too smooth and sometimes it's difficult to turn around , especially if your fingers are pretty big ( the Nikon wheel , with its radial texture is much easier to turn ) .
In a nutshell , an excellent mid range camera .
083 4 I like the SD790 due to it's compact , but yet , sturdy frame . It's fast too !
My only complaint is the rotating wheel . Mine is stiff and hard to spin unless I use my nails . This rotating wheel is not very accurate at all . Sometimes I would rotate it 360 degrees and it will do nothing . I know they improved the wheel in newer models ( SD880 , etc . ) Does anybody have this difficult time rotating the wheels ? I don't know if it's just my camera because when I went to a couple of stores to check it out , they were spinning more freely .
It was hard to write this review because I couldn't decide between 5 stars or 3 stars , so I gave it a 4 . Many of the features have to be used with the wheel .
084 4 I've owned the Powershot S2 IS for years and have had great success with it in a variety of lighting conditions . The camera has a slow shutter lag but the images were sharp and the zoom was quite useful at times . I purchased the new 790IS for a trip to Africa because it was more suitable for travel conditions and because it still had built in optical stabilization . The image quality suffers from over correction . The flash is so focal that images blur from the reflection . Also disconcerting is the enclosure for the mini-USB connection which is quite flimsy and the placement of the directional buttons are annoying as they sit precisely where your thumb naturally settles when you go to take a picture . There is a lot to like about this camera but the image quality , combined with the user interface makes for a less than appealing camera .
For the number of years that have passed since the S2 came out , I would've thought that compact digital camera quality would have improved more . Unfortunately , I'm tempted to sell this camera and return to using my S2 . I'm still a loyal canon user , but now chastened , I'm certainly more wary of their products .
089 4 Canon has created just about the perfect point n shoot camera .
I owned this model's predecessor , the SD750 , and I must say I was thoroughly impressed by the picture quality . The images are sharp , full of color , and readily usable , which is good for me who doesn't process them a lot on the computer .
Though I likes the build quality on SD750 a bit better , this camera isn't bad either , considering whats on offer on the market right now . They've tweaked the design , and though I'm not a huge fan of the big playback buttons , I do like the scroll wheel .
My only nitpick with this camera is that its not meant for sports photography , or for taking multiple pictures together . Also , the flash is a bit on the weak side .
But , with its price dropping even more ( $20 the week after I ordered ) , it sure is one hot deal : )

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
This is an excellent point and shoot digital camera . There are a lot of optional manual settings OR you can go fully automatic - - depending on your skill level and how much control you're looking for . It's a nice size to take with you just about anywhere .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
I had a Sony Cybershot DSCP - 200 ( 7.2 mp ) and I always thought it was me , not the camera , that was contributing to my blurry shots . At any given time , two-thirds of the photos I had taken with that camera would always come out blurry . I decided to give the Canon brand a try on advice from my sister , who is always raving about our mom's PowerShot . When I started using this camera , I was absolutely amazed with the sharpness and clarity of the photographs . On a recent trip to Las Vegas , I took pictures from a moving car going 50 + mph and the photos looked as though I had taken them standing still . It's honestly a fantastic camera . The larger LCD screen is awesome - - no need for a viewfinder . I did a lot of research prior to purchasing this camera and it was definitely a difficult choice with all of the other Canons out there , but I am now a loyal Canon user . And you can't beat Amazon's price . Anywhere else , this camera is selling for $100 more . If you want something that will take clear , crisp , and beautiful shots , give this camera a try .
105 4 I have used this camera for more than a month and I really like it .
The quality of pictures is great . I used to own a 5mp Sony Cybershot that broke and I decided to try a Canon instead this time . I am really happy with my decision . Images and colors are much brighter and sharper . 3x optical zoom isn ~ t that great , but with a 10mp picture you can afford to make use of the digital zoom and loose some megapixels . Night shots are awesome and the videos are better quality than my 30gb JVC hard drive camcorder .
The screen is large and nice , but my wife has a hard time keeping her fingers away from it when taking pictures .
The Macro function ( close-up pictures ) is much better than other models that I have seen .
Overall , this camera is a good purchase . I feel like I've bought the perfect camera for my needs .
107 4 I just got this camera and the pictures are sharper in close up , than the SD770IS . This is a better camera , if you don't mind the fact that is has no view finder .
Nancy , Indiana .
108 4 OK , first of all , I think it's pretty silly to give this camera a not so good review because you dropped it , especially when it's on with the zoom extended . It's like saying a car doesn't have good paint after you crashed it .
The camera takes very good pictures . We bought this camera to replace an old Nikon which was working very well as well . So far we're very happy with it because it responses fast enough to catch many precious moments of our now 6 - moth-old daughter , and is definitely a big improvement in picture quality compared to the old Nikon . In my opinion , the control is not overly complicated . I figured out how to use it ( of course with just basic functions ) without consulting the manual . Yes , it doesn't have a view finder , but let's be honest , if you have a LCD that big , what are the chances that you will use the view finder instead of looking at the LCD ?
I would highly recommended this camera to anybody who want to have an excellent family-use camera .

The first thing I noticed about this camera was the quality of the pictures . They are truly great for this class of camera . As with other Canon point-and-shoots , the controls are intuitive . Overall the camera is great .

I purchased this camera as a gift but got a chance to use it . The camera takes very good pictures with a very good battery life . There is nothing more you can ask for from a camera . Perfect camera for both outdoor and indoor pictures . Really 5 star product !

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
Our digital camera just died recently and we looked in the stores for a new camera . The point and click Canon powershot sd 790 caught out eye since it was much better and stronger than out old one . The price tag in the stores was $250.00 without tax . We looked on every website and should have looked here first . We got a great price and we have used it for a few months now and I have to say that I would have paid $250.00 for it since it is an amazing little camera but am very happy that I did not pay full price . I won't got into details since others here will give you all the specs . . but let me say that if you are interested and do your research , this camera will serve you well as it did me .
118 4 I have a sony . . . this is much better . . . sony turns head when you taking the picture
Canon turns heads when you look at the pictures on the computer . . . or prints . .
120 4 This is the first point and shoot purchased since 2002 . After reading numerous reviews both on amazon.com as well as newegg.com , going into Best Buy and playing with all point and shoots available ( then reading their reviews ) , and playing with a friends Canon SD 770 , we decided to purchase this model .
Our reasons being :
1 ) All point and shoot Canons have the Color Accent feature , which is way too much fun to play with .
2 ) The image quality , in our opinion , is equal , if not far superior to all other models we played with . The color was crisper , the image was clearer ( mostly due to the IS ) , and the screen larger .
3 ) The price off Amazon.com was by far lower than any other retailer . It put the camera under $200 , which was competitively priced , and allowed us to purchase a camera with more features than any other in that range .
So far the battery life has been good , the computer software easy to use , and the camera operation simple to learn . Reading the manual is a must if you plan to do much more than just use automatic .
All in all , no issues , good price , and fun to use !
124 4 I've had this camera ( Canon Power Shot SD790 ) about a month now and just want to say that I love it ! It takes great pics and is easy to use . I like the size of it and how it looks ( which I didn't expect to like ) . . . nice and comfortable to hold , easy to take in a pocket or purse . I've had no problem with the wheel on the back . . . I still have to study what all of the features / icons are used for yet , so at this time , I am not using it to its full potential . Uploading the pictures to the computer is easy . Takes good pics and of course I LOVE the size of the viewfinder !
128 4 Great camera . Easy to carry around . Easy to use . Lots of features . Best small camera I've ever owned . ( I have 5 )
I haven't had anything bad to say about this camera . I have taken about 2000 pictures so far and they are all great . I am very pleased .
If I wear this camera out , I would buy a new one !
130 4 I purchased the canon powershot SD790IS 10 MP and have owned it for six months . Initially , the camera was great . I purchased this camera because of its sleek design and small size . I recently bought a canon 5D Mark II and love it . The SD790IS was my casual camera for events when I didn't want to bring my 5D . The main problems with the SD790IS are :
* Red Eye is really bad with the flash . It can be corrected but not always .
* The sliding plastic button to change over to video is cheaply constructed . It broke on my camera , I cannot use the video mode .
* The video quality was poor anyway and far inferior to HD video
* The shutter speed is WAY too slow . Continous shots are impossible with the built-in flash , so many great shots are lost .
* Heavy artifacts with flash use and low light conditions . This cannot be corrected for and has ruined several great shots .
I love canon products but I do not recommend this product . Although it is capable of taking great photos it has too many flaws . Canon needs to produce a more reliable ( and faster ) camera if it wants to lead this market .
131 4 You know this review will probably come back and bite me because I want to sell this camera and get rid of it . I've own this camera for almost a year and it literally began to fall apart . The body of the camera started to separate . The panel the holds the strap disconnected . The camera fell off my arm to the ground and dented ! ! When I called Canon they told me , Yeah , we've had a few problems with that wristband panel .
I also had some LCD monitor problems with strange spots showing up . I sent the camera in for repairs and Canon wanted to charge me for mishandling the camera - due to the dent caused by the camera falling . After some complaining , the company agreed to repair the camera as a courtesy on the warranty . To their credit : The camera was totally refurbished in less than a week and returned . Apparantly , the company found that the optical assembly was inoperative and had to be replaced . There were also some other adjustments that had to be done ( I noticed that the side panel is now screwed into the camera . )
Beyond that the camera turns itself on quite easily when it's in your pocket . The top button to switch between video and camera is easily bumped and you end up taking a video instead of an important shot . The rotating menu button is also awkward and the movement between photos jumpy .
Overall , I was very disappointed . I typically use NIKON cameras but decided to try out Canon . This camera went to hell in less than a year . I had my Nikons for years and beat them up . I never had them fall apart like this . The camera is refurbished now and I'll likely dump it for some other model and brand . I'm giving the camera two stars instead of one because at least the photos turned out decent and many of the extra features on the camera were nice . The video looks decent and you could zoom in fairly good . The physical construction of the camera was just lacking .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
I purposely waited 6 months after purchasing this camera so I could properly review it . This is my third digital camera . My first was an early Canon which I was very happy with . I updated it then with the Kodak V550 and unfortunately in the future I'm afraid all of my digital camera purchases will be measured against it . I LOVED the Kodak V550 and only sought out a new camera when it died after years of being overworked . Ok , back on task here .
I researched heavily before purchasing the SD790 . My purpose was to find the best price for decent quality photos in a camera that would fit in my purse or pocket . My main objects of photography are family and travel .
Pros : There were several cameras of which I decided to take a closer look . Ultimately , and I'm a little embarrassed to admit this , I decided on this particular model because of it's looks . It is beautiful and sleek just as the V550 was . I prefer the square lines and simplicity of the buttons over ugly dial knobs and rounded corners . I have been happy with the quality of the photos and video . I'm sorry to say that I've not ever installed the software so am not qualified to comment on it . I use another photo software . I love the large viewing area . I ordered an extra battery but so far have not had to use it . The battery life is very good .
Cons : No viewfinder . I don't like not having one . I rarely used it before so thought I could do without it but when you need it , you need it . I also don't like having to remove the battery and place it in a separate charger . This may be common place but both of my previous cameras were chargable without removing the battery . This is my biggest dislike which has nothing to do with quality but convenience . Compared to my Kodak , the menu is harder to figure out but with more use I'm sure I'll get used to it .
I can happily recommend this camera . I'd give it a 5 * on looks alone but the little things I don't like about it keep me from doing so .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
This review is a combination of three :
Canon PowerShot SD950IS 12.1MP ( Titanium )
Canon PowerShot SD770IS 10MP ( Silver )
Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP
I first purchased the Canon SD950 , and after loonnnggg shipping from Jr.com , I received it and tried it out . The camera is much bigger than the SD500 that I upgraded from - - even though it's got so many bells and whistles . One thing about Canon that's got my eyebrow raised : Why the big font as if we can't read ?
The Image Stabilization is a wonderful thing , right along with the face detection . It even focused on an enlarged print of a little girl ! The 3.7 zoom is nothing to frown at either . ISO is easier to set now so one can play around with the settings . . .
The camera is made for big hands and it took me about two weeks of off and on shooting to get used to it . The 12MP quality is okay , and I didn't have to get used to too much new button placement . One thing I didn't like is the play button . I felt I had to really push my finger on the play button in order to view my photos . It annoyed me enough to see what else was out there .
The Canons SD770 and SD790 were next on my list . Even though they were only 10MP , they had newer technology from Canon : Motion Detection and Infinity and cute buttons in all new small packages .
SD770IS ( Silver )
First the SD770 . This was a nice small camera ! Not cheap feeling at all , Canon packed everything but the kitchen sink in there . I like the Infinity setting that the SD950 didn't have . Also , I have the silver version and it's nice , small , sleek , and takes great pictures . I didn't like the way the battery cover was not spring loaded . Also , either it was this particular camera or the 770 in general , but it seemed like I had to dig for the battery and SDHC card once put in . Yes , it's compact , hefty , and full of bells and whistles , but it was . . . kinda boring . Maybe because the silver color didn't have the pizazz of the black version that I'd read reviews on . Moving on to the SD790 . . .
SD790IS
Bigger camera ! Compared to the 770 , it's a giant ! The same size as the 950 except in a square / cube like form . The 950 is curvy , while the 790 is sleek and boxy ( not sure if that's an oxymoron or not ! ) . The 790 also has a new button format that I'm not sure if I like or not . I really enjoyed the SD500 ' s button placement and while I can appreciate a play button . . . why not make it easy access instead of having to constantly press the button down ? I'm thinking that the play buttons will eventually wear out . The big screen is nice , and even though I haven't used a viewfinder since . . . ever , it would be nice to just have . So the lack of a viewfinder is a potential bummer . You never know when you gotta smear your nose on the photo screen to take pic ! lol Also , the 790 is a fingerprint magnet .
I tried to take the same pictures with all the cameras , but couldn't always ( morning / evening , different zoom , etc . ) . Both the 770 and 790 have high ISO settings ( as did the 950 ) , but I didn't even use anything that high previously ! All the pictures came out great . Even my crappy pictures of my messy coffee table were clear and colorful ! One issue I had with all three cameras was the color accent setting . It seemed as if I got better black and white / one color photos from my SD500 than either of these cameras . I have to do a lot more tweaking . However , it could be just because of the balances of the colors and the lighting effects in my environment .
If I just had to choose based on portability , photos , looks , bells / whistles , ease of use , I would go crazy trying to decide . Both cameras are amazingly small ! The thing that keeps me wondering about the 770 is , how can they fit all these specs in this TINY camera ! ? ? But , I'm a sucker for good looks , so the scale points back to the SD790 ! True it's bigger than the 770 , but it's still small considering the screen . I always take great care of my electronics , so I'm not so worried about fingerprints . If the button issue upsets me extremely , then I'll just upgrade to Canon's latest and greatest in 6 - 8 months .
One more thing : I purchased the
SanDisk 4 GB Extreme III SDHC Card w / MicroMate USB Reader
and it gets 900ish pictures on the 10MP versions at the highest settings .
Either way , can't wait to take pics on the new SD790 . I feel that although all three are great , the 790 has that sleekness with Canon's new technology all in one package .
Get out , purchase any of these cams and you'd be satisfied .

141 4 I've owned at least 5 different digital cameras , and as far as the quality of pictures is concerned , this one is the worst . I can never get a clear picture , even with a tripod . The only time pictures come out even relatively clear is with the flash , which discolors the pictures . This wouldn't be that big of a deal if this was a cheap camera , but when I bought it a year and a half ago it was pretty pricey , and I expected better from the powershot line .
Other than the picture quality , it would be an excellent camera . It's pretty user friendly , although there's not as many pre-programmed settings as other cameras i've had . It's also nicely built , small , but by no means the smallest out there . Mine has taken quite a beating and it still works like it did when I bought it .
Overall I was disappointed , both because of the price for the poor quality of the photos , and because the powershot that I had owned previously was so much better . I expected so much more from canon , and I wish I'd returned it when I got it .

I have been using this camera for 3 weeks of summer fun and photos . The battery only just ran down , so that is a big improvement over my last digital . Also , it is easy to carry the recharger on a trip . The stabilization feature proved itself when I got a good picture of the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island while driving over the bumpy bridge 4 miles away ! The ' face-finding ' feature is also neat . You don't have to center the picture on a person . I'm sure there will be lots to learn , but so far , so good !

It used to be that cameras this size were considered snapshot cameras that sacrificed on quality .
Not true anymore . I am amazed at how great the pictures look for a camera this size and this price .
I use it at work ( in pathology ) and this camera is very easy to use with just one hand .
I think in the high-end range Nikon cameras are best . But I think for small point-and-shoot camerasn , Cannon can't be beat .

Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Electronics )
I've had this camera for about 6 months now . It is a great little camera that is small enough to go anywhere , but packs enough MP's to take poster sized pictures . I've had two previous versions of the PowerShot , one being the 750 . I've purchased my 3rd one for a reason .
175 4 REF [ [ ASIN : B0011ZK6OS Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ] .
This Canon PowerShot SD790IS has been an excellent gift for my 18 year old son . This camera received a lot of excellent reviews and now I see why . The SD790IS has basic functions that are easy to use right out of the box and yet is challenging enough to keep it interesting for a tech savy person . Amazon , your delivery time was very impressive . The camera was delivered days before the estimated delivery date . Bravo . You are my favorite shopping source for gift giving and personal online purchases . Thanks !
031 4 I looked long and hard and did a lot of research before purchasing . I wanted great quality and easy and I got both in this camera . I used a lot of these reviews from customers to help me decide as well as Consumer Reports and I think I made the right choice . I'm not a professional photographer but I share a lot of pictures of my niece and nephew Cam and Allie with my family and I missed too many great photos using my old cheap Fuji basic digital camera . The quality of these pictures are beautiful and downloading them to Snapfish on Comcast is a breeze . Amazons price is about $50 less than regular store prices and I didn't have to pay for shipping . The memory card it comes with is too small so you'll be happier if you order a larger one and pick up an extra battery that you can use as a backup so you don't run out of juice and miss any picture taking opportunities . I've purchased a lot of things at Amazon and you get your items really quick . I've always had good experiences .
063 4 We bought this camera in February 2009 after much research .
070 4 I just took this camera to Prague , and I have to say I am really happy with my purchase .
078 4 I went from having a sony camera ( which I hated and broke within 2 months ) and instead of going through the hassle to replace it , I just went back to Canon which I love and read all the reviews . This camera seemed to be the best and it definitely is . I love it ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
093 4 This is an excellent point and shoot digital camera . There are a lot of optional manual settings OR you can go fully automatic - - depending on your skill level and how much control you're looking for . It's a nice size to take with you just about anywhere .
125 4 I'm a hobbiest / pro photographer.Going on vacation I did not want to drag my large / heavy canon lens around . I am picky enough that I still wanted quality pictures . This little camera is great . The large screen is worth the money . The controls are small and a little slippery ( the rotating wheel ) but once you are used to it you can quickly change settings . There are many features I will most likey never use but with some creativity you could have fun with it . I had no trouble with battery life . I took around 850 pictures in 10 days so it was used a lot . I had to charge every night but it took pics solid all day on one charge . ( I did not use flash very often ) Get a car charger . I have a universal charger that will charge the batteries for both my cameras while on the road .
142 4 This is by far the best point and shoot camera I have ever used . The screen is large and the picture is beautiful . The camera is also easy to use , especially once you get familiar with the different settings available to you . However , a previous reviewer was correct in saying that the screws holding the camera body together can fall out . This happened to me , causing me to drop the camera , which caused slight damage . Although the camera still worked , I sent it into Canon to see if they could repair the body . I had it back in less then 2 weeks , at no cost to me ( except the initial shipping ) . I am confident I will not need another p & s for a LONG time , and if I were to lose this one , I would just buy the same model . Great camera !
041 4 I upgraded from a 5mp EasyShare which was really hard for me to capture anything with since I have a little girl who's constantly on the move .
017 4 I tried several digital cameras before , mostly Sony and Nikon and I kept felling unhappy with the shots taken , finally I decided to give Canon a try , the camera is EXCELLENT , the color quality is precise and the performance is the best I've seen . I am a Canon fan now .
098 4 Gave this item as a gift and they loved it ! I've used this camera before and it was easy to use without having to read the manual . Great quality pictures too !
164 4 I've had this camera for about 6 months now . It is a great little camera that is small enough to go anywhere , but packs enough MP's to take poster sized pictures . I've had two previous versions of the PowerShot , one being the 750 . I've purchased my 3rd one for a reason .
170 4 I've been using Canon cameras since long before digital . When I moved to digital a few years back , I started with a Canon Digial Rebel XT . Great camera but too bulky to carry everywhere . So I added an SD 630 to my arsenal . That's another great camera with tons of incredible features . So now looking for something improved but familiar , I went back to the Canon Elph family of cameras . The SD790IS is no slouch and represents the natural evolution of what I was already used to - the SD630 . I love this camera and am very happy with it . I have already recommended it to others .
179 4 I am a basic point and shoot picture-taker and I'm still learning all that this camera does . It's been really easy to operate , but I've got pages more to cover in the owner's manual . I believe the photo quality is very good - I've taken indoor and outdoor and the zoom is good enough for my needs . I've used it for both indoor and outdoor video and I find the quality to be really good - considering it's a camera . The mic seems pretty sensitive as it picked up my voice from a whisper . First thing I had to do when I got the camera was buy a card with more memory ( 32mg is used up in a 16 second video ) , and a case . I'm happy with my purchase .
043 4 Love the big reveiw screen . A bit more steps involved to review and or delete pictures than I was used to . Am sure the more I use it the better I will enjoy it . Pictures look great with the 10 mega pixels . Will really know for sure when I have them printed out . Ease of down loading to my computer is really great . Probably the easiest I have ever used . The motion stilling feature is really nice . Will probably want to upate it to all stars with use .
121 4 Overall , it takes wonderful photos . The only downfall is the small amount of zoom . Other than that , I am more than thrilled with my purchase ! I definitely recommend it !
136 4 I am a point and shoot type of photographer and just need the basics . This is a great camera at a great price .
166 4 This product arrived quickly and in excellent condition . I will order from this seller again if I have any future camera needs .
048 4 I am writing this not only because I feel that this is an outstanding camera , but also wish to help future reviewers and purchasers to evaluate these reviews . I checked all reviews that gave this product 2 stars or less and guess what I found out . . . . . . Every other item that these reviewers have evaluated have been given equally poor reviews by the same evaluator . . . . Take this for what this is worth . . . . with a large grain of salt . . . . BTW , both the Canon SD790 and the Sony T77 are , in my opinion , outstanding examples of top notch ultra compact digitals . I cannot understand why the images produced by their specific units are as mediocre as they state .
073 4 I love this little camera . It takes great pictures . The videos are pretty good . I was looking for a camera that would fit in my pocket so that I could carry it everywhere . I was a little picking at the auto focus and image quality . I tried several cameras before picking this one .
114 4 I purchased this camera as a gift but got a chance to use it . The camera takes very good pictures with a very good battery life . There is nothing more you can ask for from a camera . Perfect camera for both outdoor and indoor pictures . Really 5 star product !
137 4 As an amature photographer taking pictures of family , friends and interesing places this camera is the best . I like its portability - I am able to carry it anywhere . I like the instructional manual - It's straight to the ponit . The camera itself is very easy to use . I will recommend this camera to friends .
149 4 I bought this camera , and it well suits my needs . The only negative attribute is that it does not work at night for distance shots . The flash is too weak . You have to purchase an additional flasher that is around $100 .
153 4 I have not had the camera long enough to become thoroughly familiar with all of its features or any limitatins .
165 4 I LOVE this camera ! I love the look of it , the features it has . . . basically , just everything about it ! It's definitely worth the price & so much more !
176 4 Not a bad camera for the price . I had been shopping around for a long time . It takes wonderful pictures for an amateur like myself . I wanted something with a lot of megapixels so I would be ahead of the new technology game for at least a few months . The only problem I have is the metal outside gets fingerprints all over it easily . If you want an easy operable camera that looks good and has some bells and whistles , buy it !
052 4 I've been shopping around for a digital camera for a while , but I've always been put off by the prices . When I saw how cheap some were , I decided to finally shop around seriously . When I came across this camera , It stuck with me . Its solid construction , the big LCD screen , the face detection and Image Stabilization , 10 Mega Pixels , and customizing features at a reasonable price all appealed to me . I'm not a professional photographer , I just wanted a point and shoot camera , and let me tell you that this one goes above and beyond . My only criteria when shopping was that it be a solid camera , nice size LCD display , and 10 or above mega pixels . This one fit the bill perfectly . I actually like the flat Razr like buttons , they work great . So far , I take pictures of everything , and I love using the features like Color Swap , Color Accent , Digital Macro , and any shot you take will come out beautifully . It's also fast aswell . All in all , a great camera for the price . I actually feel its more camera for the price . Just having fun taking crystal clear pictures is enough to fork over the dough !
046 4 I purchased this camera , and upon first using it , thought it was great .
096 4 I purchased this camera for my daughter and she loves it . I checked it against the competition and thought that it had the best specs and functionality . The LCD screen is excellent .
127 4 I love this camera except for the little wheel where you can select the picture setting . It's a little awkward to use . Love the big LCD and the small size of the camera . Takes awesome photos !
056 4 As a user of many of Canon's cameras and camcorders , I have been very satisfied with every one I bought . This is a great camera and Canon continues to improve there lines with each new released camera . I installed a 16 gb card so I can take numerous photos and many movie clips . Anyone looking for a camera like this should have no problem with of Canon SD line of camera , The few nay sayer's in there reviews indicated a lack of understanding or they just like to complain . I highly recommend this camera
112 4 The first thing I noticed about this camera was the quality of the pictures . They are truly great for this class of camera . As with other Canon point-and-shoots , the controls are intuitive . Overall the camera is great .
156 4 This is a great camera - I picked this out as a middle-of-the-line camera . I wanted something that performed better than a point and shoot without all of the added expense of a SLR . . . . and this camera is fantastic ! ! The images can be a bit washed out with very bright sunlight , but if you spend a little time familiarizing yourself with all the options , you can more than make up for it . In other words , great camera , great value for how expensive it is , I highly recommend it !
061 4 I have owned several Canon Cameras but recently strayed to the Casio Exilim which I liked for the size but not for the video recording format ( . mov ) which was not compatible with my PS3 , or easily editable with Windows Moviemaker . I decided to switch back to Canon and am very happy with this camera . Lots of options , ease of use and an excellent lens more than make up for the lack of style and smaller size of the Casio . I totaly recommend this camera for anyone looking for a point & shoot with enough options to cover most lighting conditions . ( The image stabilization seems to work well , too )
059 4 This is a great camera . Make sure to read the manual so you learn the settings and all of the options available .
077 4 This is a great camera in every aspect .
Startup time is great , menus are logical and clear .
Picture quality is phenomenal , and all lighting will give great results .
Excellent camera for the dollar .
097 4 This camera is definitely the best camera yet for the best price in the market to day , small , nice looking and easy to use and take great pictures
139 4 This small Elph creates high quality pix ( 10Mp ) , and the image stabilization makes using it almost idiot proof . Lots of features , but easy and effective in AUTO mode .
081 4 I did a lot of research before purchasing this camera and I am very happy to have made this choice . I bought this camera for as a gift and coupled it with a SanDisk Extreme III 4GB SDHC card . The start-up time is almost instantaneous and the cycle-time between shots is also superb . I really like the circular controller on the back as its tactile nature is very manageable . It focuses super fast and with its face detection feature you can see right away how many people will be in focus . It has a very useful zoom range , while not ultra-wide for close ups it does an excellent job . I don't have the time to write about all the useful features this camera has , rest assured it's a very well thought out compact and stands out in the sea of cutesy and trendy models from this and other manufacturers .
079 4 It took me a little bit to switch from my old pentax , but this camera is overall superb . The battery outlasts anything I have had before , the screen is bright and easy to see from any angle , definitely worth the money . The color switch and accent tools work really well if you figure out how to use them . I was worried about the buttons being flat , and maybe they would be hard to push , but its not a problem at all . I like how you zoom on it , and the shooting switch on the top right is helpful . The perfect camera .
109 4 I bought this for a gift , although I use it , it isn't my personal camera . Canon seems to have most all the glitches in Digital photography worked out with these SD series cameras . This is the second one I have purchased this year that I have given for gifts and they seem to do a very good job . I upgraded to Extreme III 4G cards in both of them and it really helps . Canon's quality is among the top shelf cameras on the market , so IMHO , you can't go wrong for the $ $ spent . Great camera ! ! ! Merry Christmas .
155 4 Purchased this camera because I dropped our last one on a concrete floor and fractured the lens . I love this camera , it's easy to use , takes great pictures , has the image stability feature which in a small camera is a must .
085 4 I like the 790 because it's sturdy & feels finished , is quick to switch between modes , and because it's well-priced for what it can do . So far my only complaint is that the selector wheel is tricky to use because it's too slippery . In order to get the wheel to turn you have to push hard to get enough friction but this amount of pressure is close to pushing the underlying buttons . A rubberized surface would have worked well here .
082 4 I lost my Canon 750 and replaced it with the SD790IS and I like it even more than the 750 which was a good camera .
086 4 come on , we all know there are many companies out there selling their brand name and not their quality . This is one of the few exceptions . This camera was for a gift but i already own the Canon SD870IS . I will recommend most not to say all Canon products .
122 4 I have recently purchased this cannon sd790is camera . It has fulfilled all my demands and I am completely satisfied with it . It has excellent picture quality . It is very easy to use .
090 4 My old Canon S410 was getting long in the teeth , so I dug in to research suitable replacements . The megapixel war is something that I'll never understand , and this is especially true in the P & S arena . 10MP is plenty . The SD790 is nicely built , and the photo quality is quite good . It also appears to be pretty weather sealed as well , as the entire back of the camera was splashed with seawater , and after several months , has not caused any problems . Battery life is very good , and with minimal use of the flash , can easily power the camera for several days . I highly recommend this camera as a very small , portable P & S that takes great pictures , and is easy to carry around . Let's face it - if you don't have a camera with you , you get no picture . I'm a working pro , and played a bit with the G9 & G10 , but found them to be too big . I don't often want to haul my full kit around when hiking or just knocking around town , and the SD790 is a great way to snap quick pics without hauling a ton of gear .
071 4 This is a great little camera . It takes clear pictures with a variety of setting options ( portrait , sunset , etc . ) . It's easy to use and the perfect size . I love having a battery that recharges . I highly recommend this camera to the average joe wanting a high quality , reliable camera for friends / fam pics and traveling .
099 4 My brother-in-law loves this camera . It's small , and easy to use . It takes beautiful pictures .
106 4 We have owned 5 digital cameras over the last few years and this is the best one so far . It is very hard to get a bad picture . It is very simple to use and packed full of fun features . My neice has the canon 1100 model and this one has a nicer feel and bigger screen . ( Go for the larger screen ) It's not as fast as some other digital camers I've used , but it is great for most users . If I ever need to buy another digital camera , I would buy this one again .
117 4 I did a ton of research and ended up with this camera . I am very very happy . The photo quality is fantastic . The battery life is wonderful . My only wish is that the shutter delay was shorter but I'm getting used to it . My last camera was film , lol , so any shutter delay is too long for me . Menus are very easy to use and understand , bad shots are easy to delete on the fly , giant view screen is great . I just love this camera .
138 4 i have used this camera for little over a monthe now and i am pretty pleased with it . the colors are bright and beautiful and has a lot of neat features on this little guy . however , some of the pictures comes out blurry . other than that great camera .
174 4 I totally enjoy this camera . I bought it for a trip and took thousands of pictures . It takes beautiful sunset , underwater pictures & video , and floral pictures , besides the normal pictures . I also liked the ISO3200 setting to take wildlife pictures in motion , such as butterflies , hummingbirds & bees . I only wish the camera had a view finder like the older version . I enjoyed the video setting , but just make sure you have a big memory card to hold all your data . Im still learning all the camera can do for me ( had it for 1 month ) . It is amazing how you can take such a small camera and take award winning photos in ( using the wp-dc24 waterproof case ) & out of the water . Great buy ! !
095 4 I previously had the SD750 and absolutely loved that camera . Unfortunately , it was stolen when my car was broken in to . I ended up not replacing it 1 for 1 because the SD790IS was due out shortly , and so I picked it up locally the first weekend it hit stores . Compared to the 750 , the 790 is a little bit thicker and perhaps a little bit heavier , but it's still a good overall compact design . Image stabilization was really the only feature I felt was lacking from the 750 , so it was a welcome upgrade . I have always loved the image quality of the Canon PowerShots compared to other point and shoot cameras , and the SD790 is no exception . Overall , highly recommended . . even my Mom bought one after seeing mine !
010 4 I purchased this SD790IS after having only used Canon cameras through the years . This camera is excellent . The body is made of out of thin metal and is very strong , unlike the SD770IS , which is made out of plastic . Picture quality is also excellent , offering sharp 10MP images . The flash recharge speed is extremely fast when compared to other thin digital cameras . The 3 inch screen is great and I don't miss having an optical viewfinder . Image stabilization is also a nice feature . Overall a great purchase and it was shipped fast from Amazon.com
119 4 I got this camera for a recent vacation . I am a novice but was able to get terrific photos . Imagine what I'll be able to do after I read the manual !
104 4 I had a Sony Cybershot DSCP - 200 ( 7.2 mp ) and I always thought it was me , not the camera , that was contributing to my blurry shots .
022 4 I searched for the BEST point and shoot out there for over a month ! After reviewing all the reviews and recommendations . . . and after buying the wrong camera and returning it , I choose this awesome camera .
I bought the 12 mega pixel Kodak that is around 200 dollars before i started my research . BIG mistake . if its too good to be true it probably is . On some professional sites , kodak didn't even get a mention , and when it did it was always discribed as good for the money . I didn't want good for the money , I wanted plain good . . . great .
So let me save everyone some time . Buy this one , it is the best , buy it on amazon because it runs $350 in all retail stores , I got mine for 300 . I don't regret this camera even a little . For the extra 100 I spent on it , I got a whole different caliber of camera , it took a picture of my dog shaking off after a swim . . . and it didn't blur at all !
044 4 Be careful . The screws that hold the side panels on are very short . They can work thier way out and the side panels will fall off .
This is especially bad , because one of the side panels is connected to the hand strap . The screws come out , and the camera falls and crashes on the ground .
This is a bad design on Canon's part . Most other Canon cameras do not have this type of construction with the side panels . Most have a more molded construction .
On the plus side : Canon has the best customer service . You do have to pay to ship the camera back to them , but then they fix it and send it back with 2 day delivery . You typically get your camera back within a week of shipping it back .
The camera has a 1 year warranty . I did not have the receipt , so I didn't know exactly when I bought it . I just shipped it with the warranty card that came in the box , and Canon fixed it without any question .
This is the second camera I have had fixed by Canon . Both times , it was quick and Canon was very accomodating . I would continue to buy Canon cameras just because of that . We had a horrible experience with Casio customer service and I would never buy anything from them again .
067 4 I had it on a shoe lace around my neck on my Pacific northwest adventure tour of 2366 miles , taking pictures at 65 miles per hour with my left hand and I thought the camera performed flawlessly , in all types of weather conditions .
the pictures turned out great , the on / off button was a little too close to the picture taking button , sometimes turning the camera off in the excitement of the moment.otherwise a great camera , highly reccommended .
171 4 Clear photos , good video function , really good macro photos . Could perhaps use some wind noise cancellation for the mic and improved clarity when zooming in video mode . I also found it to have good battery life . Much better than the ( albeit old ) Sony DSC-T1 I replaced with this camera .
116 4 Our digital camera just died recently and we looked in the stores for a new camera .
060 4 Awesome camera . . . love all the features . Easy for an average user like me . Do not like the wheel , but not in the way , don't use that often . Takes great pics !
110 4 Our old canon SD660 was stolen in Shanghai last month by a pickpocket . We were devastated but upon return to the USA , we immediately knew we would buy another canon . We chose the SD790 because of the 3 in screen and other enhanced features . We couldn't be happier . Ironically , we were glad we were forced to buy this new camera .
144 4 Got the camera for my wife for her Birthday . She wanted a small camera with a long battery life . Professional resolution wasn't necessary but wanted high quality pictures . So far the camera has been great . We like the image stabilizer and the fast time to next picture
129 4 I was always a Sony person and never like the look and feel of Canon . But the end result of this camera are far better then any Sony Camera I have ever used . It may not have the touch screen feature just like some new Sony Cameras but pictures taken from this camera are just awesome . . . . . .
050 4 Canon is the best brand on the market . It might not be the fanciest but has the best picture quality . I have had sonys , nikons , kodak , you name it , but this the best camera I have ever used . Captures every moment perfectly !
066 4 disappointed in the durability . The Camera takes great pictures unfortunatly it began lossing screws and falling apart after only a few monthss of very light use .
146 4 Camera is great . It replaced one just like it that was lost . Wrong camera was sent first , but they quickly sent out the correct one , and I then returned the incorrect one .
167 4 Camera was purchased along with a separate underwater housing for mostly underwater photography in the tropics . The camera takes amazing picture both above and below the water with just the built-in flash . The pictures came out beautifully , even those tough ones under marginal conditions .
159 4 I have been using this camera for 3 weeks of summer fun and photos .
035 4 I bought this camera to replace a 3 year old Panasonic . The Canon's features and picture output are great . The image stabilization really works well and allows me to capture on the fly shots of my family . The only negative I have with the camera is a nitpick , its a wee bit too wide , I wish they could have made it a bit smaller .
057 4 This is my third Canon Elph and just like the first two , I am thrilled with it . Well worth the higher price , all of my Canons have offered fantastic photos packaged with an easy to use bullet proof camera . Two thumbs up and then some .
100 4 So I read every review possible on all the cameras I was debating between . . . and this won . Boy , am I glad I chose it . It did not let me down ! I am thoroughly satisfied .
147 4 I love this camera . It is my second Canon Powershot and the features are great . The pictures are amazing . It fits in my pocket yet takes professional quality photos once you get the hang of how to adjust exposure , etc .
151 4 The camera works very nicely & turns out great pictures . It's fairly easy to use & yet is powerful . I had some difficulty finding some items in the documentation .

SD1100 - SD790 - SD780 - SD940 - SD1400
Of these , I have tested photos and video back to back and I was always impressed how my 2008 SD1100 outperformed every single Canon model from 2009 - 2010 . SmartAUTO technology seems to be the culprit , in addition to increased pixel size affecting the quality . And oddly , the DIGIC III seems to also outperform the newer version processor .
The SD1100 VGA video also outperforms Panasonic's LUMIX VGA & WVGA , and shockingly comes close to Canon's HD quality . The major difference : screen size . But for PC / Mac viewing , I find VGA size acceptable . . not to mention file size for non compressed HD can get enormous .
After doing a lot of research and picking the brains of several Canon reps , I discovered that Canon released the SD790 after the SD1000 using the same 35mm lens , only with a larger 3 LCD screen vs 2.5 for the SD1100 .
See this link :
So I decided to buy a Canon SD790 refurb for only [ . . . ] and I must say , THIS IS ONE AMAZING CAMERA constructed of metal , not cheap plastic and feels bullet proof . The large 3 LCD screen is amazing for an older model .
The STILL PHOTO quality is identical to that of the SD1100 and beats the SD780 quality with similar 35mm lens ( not wide 28mm ) . I've said it before though : SmartAUTO on the newer models creates horrible photos indoors . You must use PARTY mode or PORTRAIT . AUTO feature on the SD790 seems to work like a charm . You don't get the yellow ( poor white balance ) tint on human skin on this model and the SD1100 .
Another KEY setting for the SD790 : the focus system . If its set on CENTER this may cause blur problems raised by others ' reviews . If you don't hit your subject perfectly , then the photos will blur and focus on the wrong object . With FACE DETECTION , it works 100% of the time for me . The other focus setting tries to capture the closest object , and seems to work very well .
DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR THE BEST CANON AND BEST POINT & SHOOT I。 VE OWNED . Heck , for only [ . . . ] it outperforms Canon models 3x the price .
My next back-back test is the newer SD970 version vs . its predecessor SD790 .
058 4 Love the camera , GREAT PICTURES , Easy to use , Auto fuction takes perfect pics 95% of time , Good battery life , Barely any blurred pics with IS . Also must praise AMAZON I tried a couple of other cheaper sites and got calls back with not in stock , or slightly differt model . Amazon had it , and had to me quick ; still cheaper than Dept stores
088 4 This is a awesome camera ! ! ! i bought this like a month ago . . i went to a trip in bahamas and the pics are TOP QUALITY ! ! ! my girlfriend has a sony dsc t500 and making a comparision the CANON IS A CLEAR WINNER . . .

094 4 Researched MANY cameras and online reviews and finally decided on the Canon Powershot SD790 IS and am so pleased . It's takes GREAT pics , is VERY easy to just point-n-shoot , yet also has lots of great features that I am sure will come in very handy . Haven't had time to read the manual yet , but that's the best thing about this camera . . . you can start using it immediately WITHOUT having to spend time with the manual .
Love it , love it , love it . . .

157 4 Love this camera . . . my only complaint is it is bulker than most small cameras and a bit heavier but thats probably because it has SO MANY features .
