Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Green)

  • 004 4  I don't typically bother reviewing products because I usually only buy things that already have a lot of reviews . I decided to throw in my 2 cents on this one in hopes someone can benefit from my experience . I primarily use my camera for family shots , mostly of my young children . I loved my old Canon A610 more that I can say and it has served me well for 4 years . Recently one of my children got a hold of it and bent up the little dealies that close over the lens cap to the point where I had to pull them off with tweezers just to use the camera . That's when I decided it was time to see what Canon now has to offer . I am by no means a photography expert . I just want a point and shoot that I can use to snap high quality family photos for prints , digital scrapbooks , etc . The sale price on this camera seemed excellent for the features and a free memory card offer sucked me in so I took the plunge . I assumed it would be a major upgrade from my 5MP A610 . Once I had the battery charged up I started taking photos of my kids in auto mode . I was * shocked * at the poor quality of the photos . Every photo I reviewed was terrible . Many were blurry , and the ones that weren't couldn't be cropped to the slightest degree without losing all detail . I couldn't believe it ! Auto mode on my old Canon had never failed me before and I could crop all the way to the eyeballs without loss of detail . Determined not to give up , I did some research . Several people recommended kids and pets mode . I tried this and the blurry issue was solved . However , the cropping issue still remained . I dug deeper and started messing with ISO settings and a bunch of other stuff I don't really understand . I just couldn't solve the problem . I even got out my old Canon and took identical shots with both cameras and the old one won out every single time . I must point out that these were all indoor shots with relatively low light . I realize these are not ideal conditions , but if a camera can't handle those conditions then it isn't for me . I had pretty much resolved to return this camera and was already shopping on Amazon for another one when I decided to give it one more try . I simply couldn't understand how this camera could perform so poorly . I fired it back up in kids and pets mode and started looking around at all the settings it would let me modify . That's when I noticed an S in the bottom left corner of the screen . Hmmm . . . what could this be ? The other options for this setting are L M1 M2 M3 S and W . It turns out that this setting determines the number of megapixels that the camera uses . L is the highest resolution setting which uses all 10MP and 3648x2736 resolution . S ( which is what the camera was automatically set to ) has a resolution of only 640x480 and appears to use .3MP . Soooo , I bumped it from S up to L and now my camera takes awesome photos . Once again I can crop to the eyeballs and now side by side the same photos look even better on the new camera than they did on my old one . Also , with my 4GB memory card it says I can take approximately 1450 photos at this higher resolution . So now all is right with the world , I don't have to deal with the hassle of a return , and I can take awesome family photos this Christmas . Even though the camera is performing admirably now , I had to give it 4 stars because it should not have been such a pain in the rear to straighten this out . Not to mention that the included paper manual does not even address this issue at all . I assume the online manual covers it , but should I really have to go that far to get one croppable indoor shot ? This is a point and shoot ! ! Most of the bad reviews were for the same problem I was having . The majority of purchasers don't want to have to switch a bunch of settings ; they just want the camera to take great photos without a lot of effort .
    • 007 4  Wow ! This is the 3rd Cannon Elph camera that I have owned . Cannon hit a home run with this one . I can't seem to take a bad picture with this camera . I use it for work and take pictures all day long under different situations . Everything operates on automatic , the camera even switches automatically between long distance and macro modes . It is able to produce great pictures in different lighting situations , where my others cameras have failed in the past . This is about my 25th digital camera that I have purchased , we actually wear them out through use , and I will purchase this same camera again , and highly recommend it to you . You will be satisfied . The only negative that I can say is that the camera is almost too small for my large hands and the camera disappears in your pockets and you will forget that you are carrying it ! Really , that is not a problem , and actually probably a plus if you are on vacation and don't want to be lugging around some big war club old camera to take some pics . I can't recommend this camera more . I just plain love it .
    • 008 4  Overall , I think this is a great compact camera and is invaluable for the spontaneous people shots that capture those special moments in life . It won't take pictures worthy of National Geographic ( meaning it won't replace a dSLR ) , but it fills in well when a large camera is just too much equipment to be carrying around . Pluses : * Very short power up to shot time * Pocket friendly * Solid build , mostly metal body * Great battery life * Bright LCD with good resolution * Sharp images in good lighting / daylight * Image stabilization * Easy to use * Captures vibrant colors * DIGIC processor picks appropriate settings for most shots ( see below ) * No red eye ! * Fast zoom Minuses : * No manual controls or scene modes * Tends to use higher than necessary ISO settings ( more grainy pictures , sometimes making them unusable ) in low light using Auto Mode ( ISO can be set manually in P mode ) * Underpowered flash ( common to most compact cameras ) * Paper thin battery compartment cover ! Mostly , the camera suffers from its diminutive size . It doesn't offer much in terms of artistic controls , but does a very good job of making those decisions most of the time . This makes it ideal for the weekend snapshot photographer who wants to take good photos without much more than hitting a shutter button ! Great all purpose camera , everyday camera .
    • 009 4  I purchased this camera as a replacement for an older Canon powershot that had been dropped 1 too many times . I love the improved shutter lag time . ( still has one but it is better ! ) The camera comes on quickly , after you have taken a photo , there is not a long wait before you can take another . I was able to easily capture my busy 3 and 4 year old kids in motion without blur ( this is HUGE ! ) . The Auto mode is easy to use and so far has taken wonderful photos . I can not speak to the software that came with the camera as I always use picasa to tweak photos and I use the software with Shutterfly to crop or remove redeye before printing them . On a side note , the SD cards have really come down in price !
    • 014 4  I am typically the BIGGEST fan of these Canon ELPH cameras . I owned the SD450 and still do have the SD1000 . The SD450 was a victim of being tossed around in luggage , so when that broke , I went with the SD1000 and was very happy . I wasn't the biggest fan of the square nature of the SD1000 , but loved the camera otherwise and soon forgot about its boxy frame . I have an 11 month old daughter and decided to get a second camera that way my husband could take the SD1000 and I would have the SD1200IS ( in orange , of course ) at my side all of the time to snap pictures of the baby . I could not have been more excited to receive my camera and was instantly disappointed . The sturdy feel that was found with the SD1000 had disappeared to a cheap , plastic feel . The battery cover door is flimsy and feels like it could pop open at anytime . However , I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and promptly popped the battery in to snap a few pictures to test it out . Indoor pictures are terrible . The AUTO position on the camera is a complete joke . I think it's safe to say that 75% of those pictures were unusable and the remaining 25% were definitely not GOOD . After messing around with the settings a little ( I'm not a camera pro , but I do know a few things about the ISO settings and such ) , I was able to improve the percentage of good to horrible pictures to probably 50% / 50% . However , I still was lacking crisp , clear photos . After checking the photos and completely missing out on some AWESOME pictures that actually had my daughter looking at the camera because they were completely fuzzy , I have decided to pack it up and send it back . The video is not HD , but neither was the SD450 or SD1000 , and I think that the SD1200 ' s is inferior . I cannot express how disappointed I am that Canon has released such a subpar offering . I paid just under $170 for this camera and am wondering if I would have a different response with the SD780 or SD940 , but then will have to shell out at least another $100 for it . We paid $150 for the SD1000 and I almost got 2 of that model . I now wish that I had . The SD1000 is a 7.1 MP and the 1200IS is 10 MP . Honestly , I feel like I got pictures with my 2MP Fuji Finepix that I had 8 years ago . I'm sorry to do this to you , Canon - I've been such a supporter and have recommended your cameras to more than a handful of friends / family members . I'm going to have to rethink my camera situation . I was blown away from the good reviews - but whenever something negative was said about this model - it did say there were a lot of blurry pictures . Perhaps if I haven't been so wow'ed in the past by other SD ELPH models , I may not have not had such a horrible review . I do think that the SD1000 was a significant upgrade from my previous SD450 ; however , I think the SD450 did a better job than this SD1200 that supposedly has the Image Stabilizer
    • 015 4  I own this camera for several weeks now and I absolutely love it ! The pictures are crystal clear ! If you use night mode , your pics will turn out great too ! I also suggest using the kids and pets mode if you have small children and pets running around the house to prevent blurs in your pics . I have to agree with other reviewers that mention that the program mode is better than the auto mode . In auto-mode I sometimes would get blurry photos . I enjoy the face detection feature , but sometimes it is a little slow & there is a slight delay before I can press the snapshot button to take the pic . You should install the software before using the camera . It explains how to use the camera and all of the features that are included like , indoors , aquarium , at the beach , snow-scapes , pets & kids , sunset , foliage , low-light , nightscapes , portrait , fireworks , underwater , etc . You can also take pictures in sepia and in black and white and insert the date and time stamp if desired .
    • 018 4  The Canon SD1200 is a good ultra-small camera at the current price of around $150 . For people planning to spend $200 , there may be better choices from both Canon and Panasonic . The materials and workmanship on the Canon SD1200 look cheaper than on my older Canon SD1000 . The SD1000 looked like a very expensive camera , and the SD1200 , up close , looks cheaply made . Looks don't always predict durability . . . judging by customer comments , it is likely that the two models are about equally reliable . As with most small Canon cameras , photos taken in the auto mode are likely to be adequate , but seldom exceptional in quality . To get the best results with the SD1200 , the owners should spend a couple of hours practicing setting exposure levels , ISO levels , and adjusting white balance , contrast , saturation , and sharpness . For most outdoor photos on a sunny day , the best results will come from locking the ISO at 100 , dropping exposure 1 / 3 stop , decreasing contrast to the minimum , and increasing sharpness . With practice , you can change exposure levels or ISO levels in less than five seconds . If a photo looks too bright or too dark , you can simply retake the photo with the exposure level adjusted for the best results . The tiny flash of the SD1200 works best if you lock the ISO at 200 , and stay three feet to six feet from your primary subject . If you take a flash photo of a group of people sitting twenty feet away , you are likely to get poor results . Read the complete owners manual , and work through all of the settings page by page . Many folks have , by accident , set their camera for macro focus and are surprised all of their photos are now blurry , or set the camera in a mode that takes tiny one meg sized photos , and are surprised by the photos not being sharp and detailed . A less than excellent photo with this camera will be the result of a mistake by the owner about 99 times out of a hundred . The folks who complain about not getting sharp photos simply need to practice . To get sharp photos , you should press the shutter down halfway to lock the focus and exposure , hold the camera steady with both hands , and gently push down on the shutter . With practice , most people can get very sharp photos outdoors at shutter speeds as low as 1 / 15th of a second . The folks who hold their camera with one hand and fail to pre-focus will seldom get sharp photos with ANY small digital camera . Although the SD1200 will fit into your jeans pocket , it belongs in a padded case . In your pocket , sooner or later you will damage the lens mechanism , and the lens will refuse to open or close . Or you will damage the viewing screen . Keeping the camera in a padded case in your bag or clipped to your built ensures many years of reliable service . . . and don't forget . . . never leave a digital camera inside a parked car . . . the 120 degree summer temperatues will fry its brain .
    • 021 4  While I have only had my camera a couple of hours , I have logged in many ( some may say too many ) hours of internet research to find the best small digital camera under $ [ . . . ] and think I have found it ! ! I had a Kodak DX7360 and loved it , but it is clunky , and then didn't survive a night out in the rain on Halloween . Oops ! As much as I loved my old Kodak , I have been scared off of purchasing a new Kodak since many many reviews said the pictures were not clear , the shutter time seemed too slow , and that they seemed to just stop working altogether in a matter of months . Seemed like these were similar complaints of Nikon Coolpix , Sony Cybershots , Samsungs and Olympus . My final options were this Canon SD1200 , an Olympus Stylus 7010 , Casio Ex-S5 and Casio EXZ33 . What really sold me on the Canon SD1200 was the fact that I found awesome reviews from expert websites : [ . . . ] - it made the Dave's Picks list [ . . . ] - strong buy ( the highest rating ) ( Olypus 7010 was only good buy . ) [ . . . ] - rated the Best Ultra Compact Digital Camera under $200 [ . . . ] - rated an A . Like most people , I didn't want to buy any camera without actually testing it out . I tested it out at Best Buy , got a few quick pics of my 4 yr old and was totally sold ! The camera took crisp pictures immediately . Crisp and quick were my main objectives since I pretty much only take pictures of my 2 and 4 yr old boys who are always on the go ! : ) I don't know about technical details of zoom , digital / optical etc , but was able to shoot a quick , clear image little video of my dog and was able to zoom while recording . A lot of other point and shoot cameras do not have the zoom while recording feature . I didn't actually buy this camera from Amazon.com . I still wanted to submit a review though since I've pored over the many reviews on this site for this camera and the others I researched . I ended up buying it in person today for the same price at Best Buy ( Black Friday ) and purchased the Geek Squad Black Tie 2 yr warranty . Although after all the great things I've heard about the Canon SD1200 , the $35 Best Buy protection plan will cover pretty much anything short of actually losing the camera . . . even if it gets left out in the rain next Halloween . : ) I'll add to my review in the future if my opinion changes , but so far , this seems like the best quality , easy-to-use , quick and crisp picture taking camera for the money .
    • 022 4  Had used camera only 3 weeks . Lens stuck open . Did not drop or mistreat . Lens error message seen on screen and calling Canon resulted only in send it for repairs . Read on internet several threads about Canon small cameras having dreaded lens error causing camera to be inoperatable . Many report that Canon did not honor warranty saying camera dropped or mistreated . I just sent my in . Don't know what Canon will say but not hopeful . Like picture quality with few pictures I got from camera before it died . UPDATE 6 - 18 - 2009 Camera returned from Canon with complete lens assembly replacment . I appreciated that it was covered under warranty ! Thanks Canon . Just want readers to be aware if they search internet for Canon lens error that this is a problem reported by many who own the smaller Canon cameras like sd1100 and sd1200
    • 023 4  We've previously owned a Canon SD630 and some other named cameras in the past . The SD630 is an awesome camera which never gave us any trouble . It would occasionally flash when it shouldn't causing the picture to be washed out , but it is a great camera . We purchased the SD1200IS because the initial plan was to give the SD630 to an older family member who isn't always keen on trying something new . But , when this idea was run across my wife , she made it clear to me that she didn't want to get rid of the SD630 because it was sentimental to her . After using the new SD1200IS , my wife quickly fell in love with it . The camera takes phenomenal pictures every time . Neither of us are photo experts . The camera is set to auto and away we go . The camera makes little noises inside adjusting to the scene and picture you are taking at the time . There is a date stamp you can use which is visible when you take your photo . Our older Canon had a setting where you could leave it on the review mode and if the power button was accidentally pressed , the lens would not open out . This one does not have that feature . So , if you ever accidentally press the power button , the lens will open out . Overall we are very happy with our new camera . We have a small child and we love taking pictures with our new camera . I would recommend this camera to everyone . It is easy to operate and takes great pictures .
    • 024 4  After using this camera for the last three weeks.I have to said this is great camera. After using a Canon sd 200 for the last five years ( Great Camera ) this is a more improved version. Its a very quick camera , the auto feature works very well as the red eye correction , picture quality is excellent and the image estabilization work great . I will recomend this camera to everyone looking for a great camera.I bought it in Amazon at a good price thr delivery was very good as the over all service .
    • 025 4  i was very excited to get the camera since i have had a big bulky Kodak easy share for six years . The cannon Powershot SD1200 iS is 1 / 3rd of the size of my kodak and is very sleek looking . After setting everything up , i took my first picture . I was amazed at the face-detection , and how it tracks the face as it moves , which is perfect for capturing children . I was also impressed with the lack of lag time in between pictures and when turning on the camera . However , the only down point is that there is no fireworks setting , thus creating a blurr in the pictures for those great summer-time nights . Overall , i am satisfied with the camera , and would definitely recommend it .
    • 027 4  Initially , I hesitated to switch from traditional film to digital out of fear that a new camera would be too complicated or difficult to understand . This Canon has proven to be incredibly simple to use and the picture quality is sensational . For those looking for a camera that requires you to do nothing more than point and shoot , this one is the perfect choice . All you have to do is set it to Auto , and the Canon PowerShot SD 1200IS takes care of everything . On the other hand , if you are a person who prefers to make your own adjustments and settings , that's also simple to do . Menus are clear , logical and easy to understand . One of the very best features of this Canon is the viewfinder . I can't believe so many other digital cameras lack this extremely useful tool . A hobby I enjoy requires me to be able to take several hundred outdoor pictures in a single day without access to a battery charger . With this Canon , I can turn off the LCD screen and save battery power by simply using the viewfinder instead . Over the past ten days , I have taken more than 1000 pictures ( all outdoors , no flash , without using the LCD screen ) on a single battery charge . Hard to believe , but the battery still isn't depleted . Picture quality has been absolutely outstanding . While most of the pictures I've taken so far have been outdoors , even under damp , cloudy conditions the pictures have been clear and crisp . I have taken quite a few pictures indoors with equally impressive results . Even pictures taken of a jack-o-lantern at night , with the flash turned off , turned out perfect , too . I would highly recommend the Canon PowerShot SD 1200 IS to anyone looking for a reasonably priced digital camera that is extremely simple to use and yet loaded with great features .
    • 028 4  After seeing many surprisingly crisp clean results taken by my friend's Canon SD1100 , I decided to add a compact Canon to my collection . I have owned a Canon S2IS for several years and continue to be thrilled with the photo quality , but there are times when that camera is too bulky to bring to events where a ' pocket sized ' camera is more convenient . I just wish I'd read more of the reviews on Amazon before making my purchase of the SD1200 . I assumed it was an upgrade from the SD1100 , how could it be any worse ? I'm so unhappy with the photos it took on my recent vacation , I'm seriously considering buying the SD1100 to replace the SD1200 . As one earlier reviewer wrote , This model replaces the 1100 IS camera , an excellent camera . . . In my opinion the pictures are not as sharp as the 1100 IS . I agree with this assessment . Nearly all photos were slightly less than crisp ( despite making sure that the green focus lamp was on for all photos , and I know how to hold a camera pretty steadily ) . My biggest complaint is that in Auto Mode , the camera seems to want to revert to taking all indoor pictures at 400 ISO which resulted in very noisy overexposed / washed out pictures . There was no need for it to revert to this setting in Auto Mode . When I had time to set the camera to manual mode , it took acceptable pictures at 200 ISO when I had time to make sure the exposure / flash was at the correct intensity . But in spontaneous situations , there is no time to fuss with the manual mode and your shot is lost . I'm OK with reverting to Manual Mode when I really need to , but the photos in Auto Mode on average should not be so unacceptable . Another complaint I have about newer digital cameras is the upping of megapixels . Why are camera manufacturers pushing more megapixels down the throats of consumers ? When you have such a tiny camera , with a small sensor and a tiny lens - extra megapixels do not result in better photo quality . If anything , it only results in emphasizing the weaknesses of the photo / camera by giving you a noisy , less than sharp image . In this race to pack in more megapixels because the consumers think this is what makes a great photo , it is the consumer who loses and we are getting a new generation of cameras with poorer image results than the previous generation of pocket sized digital cameras . Leave the 10 + megapixels for the high end SLR cameras where you may see a benefit . In all fairness , if image quality doesn't matter to you the camera rates well in other areas . It is very compact , it's easy to use , and the battery life was great . However , I'd sacrifice the ultra compact size for something , 1 / 4 larger that takes better pictures any day .
    • 031 4  The problem most people are having with this camera is they are trying to use it in Full Auto mode ( Smart Auto enabled ) . Unfortunately Canon's Smart Auto mode is HORRIBLE . It constantly looks for the proper scene mode and it usually chooses the wrong mode . I'll never understand the logic they used for this mode , it is completely wrong . The SD1200 is not the only Canon compact that suffers from this problem , just about every new Canon has the same problem . The Smart Auto mode is absurd ! For example , when shooting indoors in average lighting Smart Auto will frequently pick a very high ISO value , a low shutter , and it will sometimes even turn the flash off ! The low shutter will result in blurry pics because of camera shake , the high ISO value will result in grainy / noisy pics . A Full Auto Mode ( a mode designed for beginners ) should NEVER allow the shutter speed to drop below 1 / 60 of a second . Fortunately there is an easy solution . Take the camera out of Full Auto ( Smart Auto ) mode and put it in Programmed Auto Exposure Mode ( Page 62 of the manual ) . This mode is set by sliding the mode switch on the back to the middle position , and then make sure the exposure mode is set to P ( Program mode on , scene modes off ) . Set the camera as follows : * Exposure Mode P ( Page 62 ) * Make sure the Auto flash feature is on ( Page 62 , A-Lightning Bolt ) . * Make sure the Auto ISO feature is on ( Page 68 ) . * Focus mode should be the normal setting ( not macro , not landscape , Page 63 ) * Exposure Compensation should be 0 ( Page 67 ) * Image Quality should be set to Large , Compression set to Fine ( both on Page 65 ) . * White balance should be Auto ( Page 69 ) . * Set the IS mode to Continuous ( Page 113 ) . * Metering Mode should be Evaluative ( Page 79 ) These base settings will result in great point and shoot pictures . The shutter will never drop below 1 / 60 , the flash will turn on when the light level drops , and your pictures will be sharp and well exposed . When you become more familiar with the camera you can turn off some of the auto settings and try to be more creative . The bottom line is the camera is terrible in Fully Auto ( Smart Auto ) mode , and it is excellent in Programmed Auto Exposure mode . This is probably not the camera for someone who needs something that works great in a Fully Auto Dummy mode . I don't think any of the recent Canon compacts fit that bill , they all have the terrible Smart Auto Mode .
    • 045 4  I have owned many of the power shot cameras and this one has been by far the worst I have owned . ( SD890 was the best ) . The camera is less than 6 months old and photo clarity has gotten so poor that I finally sent it to the canon repair center . The camera has always been inconsistent with clear pics . Every now and then a very blurry pic would show up . Hand shake was not the problem . I finally got tired of deleting pictures that were to blurry to fix and sent it to the company for warranty . What was their answer ? I must have dropped it therefore , sorry , no warranty . Keep this review in mind when you are thinking about canon . I know I will begin to lean towards the nikon for all of my photo equipment needs .
    • 046 4  Great Camera , For long time I was looking for Small handy Canon Camera with Date / time stamp option on the photo itself ; to my surprise this camera has it . Overall picture quality is good , Battery life is better . What else you want ?
    • 050 4  This is my first canon camera and i am really impressed with the quality of picture . Image stabilization feature is really nice . I would rather say it's not image stabilization it's image quality enhancement . The only down point of this camera it takes time to stabilize the image . So you are not able to capture those moments that which is only for fractions of second . Overall Nice camera
    • 058 4  We live in Guam , where the picture taking possibilities are endless . This little camera takes really great pictures both above water and underwater ; we bought the underwater casing and my husband uses it while scuba diving , it takes beautiful underwater pictures and video . The lag time can get a little annoying if the picture preview is on ; but that's just basic digital camera issues . We've used this camera for video on several occasions and you wouldn't be able to tell it was taken with a hand held camera instead of a video camera . When the camera arrived I was a little worried that the orange color would be more pastel , but I was pleasantly surprised by the bright orange color since orange is one of my favorite colors . I used to be a strictly Nikon person , and I owned the Nikon CoolPix , but it was stolen a while back . We replaced it with this Cannon and it's made us open our eyes to another brand . We still love Nikon , but Cannon has definitely reserved a spot on our list of favorites . My only complaint between the two is that the Cannon is a little bit thicker than the Nikon and doesn't fit into my pocket as easily . But it's still a great little camera to throw into my purse and take everywhere .
    • 065 4  I own a Canon S30 , like it and still use it as a backup . This Canon SD1200IS replaces my Casio Ex-Z600 which suddenly lost its display . I did a fair amount of research before buying it , and relied on Canon's reputation to a large degree . I've owned this camera for about 2 months and have used it several times indoors and outdoors . The good points are : 1 . nice convenient size , easily fits in your purse or pocket ; 2 . great pictures most of the time with good lighting & outdoors , marginal ( grainy ) without flash at lower light levels indoors ; 3 . appears well built , feels like quality ; 4 . nice size display screen , bright & clear . The not so good points are : 1 . must remove the battery to charge it , no dock or way to charge it while in the camera . Minor complaint , but annoying ; 2 . Significant problem : the focus operation of the camera is iffy . Proper focus requires pushing the shutter button half way and allowing the camera to focus , which it usually does in a half second or so , and then continuing the button push to take the picture . Unfortunately , pictures fairly often come out distinctly out of focus . This also is true while taking video - two or three movie sequences will look fine , followed by one that is out of focus . Very frustrating ! We have several Casio point & shoot cameras , most costing less than this Canon , that do a much better job at focusing . For an otherwise great camera , its really disappointing . I intend to play with the focusing a little more before I give up on the camera , but it may very well end up on Ebay .
    • 069 4  I bought this camera as a replacement of an older Canon PowerShot SD800IS which I accidentally broke . I was so pleased with the older model I bought this newer model without checking it firsthand at a store ( after all it is many more features ) . I've realized this was a huge mistake - and here's why : 1 . The first thing I noticed was the build quality of the camera was very poor - It looks poorly engineered and it is made entirely out of plastic now . Also it is now manufactured in China where as the older model was made of metal and manufactured in Japan . Also all the accessories like the battery charger are noticeably cheaper . 2 . The battery life is really short - I would be lucky to get an hour's worth of use before the battery runs out - after being fully charged the night before . I have recently discovered that there is a design / manufacturing issue with the seating of the battery and now when the low battery warning flashes I simply open the battery cover and jiggle the battery and the camera starts working again . I discovered this out of frustration . 3 . Compared to the old camera - the flash really floods ( or overexposes ) an image and all the colors get washed out - so I end up using the flash as little as possible - but now the pictures become very grainy . Hence the photo quality is definitely not on par compared to the older model . I am definitely not a professional photographer and use the camera purely for photographing my kids so I keep the camera on it's default settings for almost all photos - I am telling you this so you understand I am a casual photographer and even my less discerning photographic needs are not being met by this camera .
    • 072 4  I've owned a few Canon powershot cameras over the years , and in general I have been very happy with them ( obviously if I keep buying them ) . But this particular model has a few flaws that have really disappointed me since I purchased the camera in Oct . 2009 . 1 . the auto focus hasn't been working properly - especially in indoor situations . Many times when trying to take photos of friends , I've noticed that the auto focus changes to the macro setting . And no , I'm not taking close-ups . So in order to take decent photos I have to set it to manual and indoor , then the photos turn out nicely . 1 . the image stabilization doesn't work too well - I have to hold the camera extra still for the picture to come out clearly . any movement whatsoever and the photo comes out blurry . To be fair , I don't know if this is just a problem with my particular unit ( i.e . I got a lemon ) or if this is a problem with the overall model - I haven't bothered looking at all the other reviews , as I don't have that kind of time . I am going to contact Canon directly and see what they can / will do about it - I will update this review afterwards . . . I really hope it's just a problem with my unit because I have been very happy with Canon cameras and would hate for this one model to ruin that for me .
    • 086 4  I have been a loyal Canon customer for years but it has ended with the SD1200is . The camera has great features . Unfortunately , the indoor picture quality is poor . I purchased this camera to replace an aging Canon S50 which is a 5 or 6 years old 5 megapixel camera . After using the SD1200 on Christmas day and experimenting with a variety of shooting modes , I have concluded that the SD1200 not incapable of taking good indoor photos . Almost all of my photos were grainy and washed out ; grossly inferior to my old Canon S50 or my wife's Canon SD870 . While this camera may well take great pictures outside ( I don't know since I did not take any pictures outdoors with it ) , it does not take good pictures inside with limited light . Since I use a camera primarily for snapshots , this is not acceptable and I am certain there are better cameras out there . I have returned this camera and am shopping for a different camera that will take good photos inside and outdoors .
    • 091 4  Nice campact camera with lots of features . Easy to use in auto mode . Movie feature is very useful ( I've got grand daughters ) . I would have liked a printed user manual . The on-line version is hard to reference when away from computer and there are too many pages to print . One of the few small point and shoot cameras around with a view finder . This is useful when trying to coserve power because the display can be turned off . Software to download from camera to computer works fine .
    • 092 4  I have researched a point and shoot cameras for a couple of years . I needed a small pocket sized camera to complement my SLR pro camera and my bridge medium sized camera . It's not always convenient or practical to haul around a DSLR , camera bag , etc . Having had a professional DSLR camera for several years , I realized I had to be willing to give up some features and quality in a small point and shoot . However , I was not willing to compromise picture quality and color balance . I wanted a camera that is adequate indoors as well as outdoors plus have enough manual controls to manipulate the settings per my preference . After evaluating the S90 , S780 , S790 , S200 , and the SD1200IS , I have concluded that for the price vs . picture quality and camera size , I selected the SD1200IS . Although the other cameras all cost more - $200 - $400 they are great cameras but the SD1200IS produces just as good of quality pictures , if not better , than those evaluated in this review . Considering , I am not interested in video ( I have a small camcorder for that purpose ) and I wanted the best quality I could get in the smallest camera , my conclusion was the SD1200IS . I would have paid up to $400 for the other cameras . However , it isn't necessary for the features and quality I desired . Pros about the the SD1200IS - my experience with the camera is consistent with all of the Amazon reviews I read . Thank you all for giving you feedback and helping me make this decision . - great small size ( fits in my pocket ) - good picture quality ( pixelation and color balance ) . At 100% picture size , there is little pixelation and artifacts . My observations were that the SD1200IS shot at 800 ISO compared to my Canon DSLR ( 15 MP ) at lower ISO yield comparable picture quality . Hard to complain about that . - good photos in low light conditions - Flash reaches over 15 feet in a dimly lit room and produces great natural pictures . - Battery holds a good charge - Love the ease of menus that Canon provides - Ease of use : my 72 year old father good operate this camera ( and he is not a fan of electronics ) A few Cons : - there is a shutter delay when depressing the button . - the battery door is a bit flimsy Overall , I am quite pleased with the camera . I'm very glad my search is over .
    • 100 4  This sub compact point and shoot camera goes anywhere easily . With it's optical stability ( the prefered stability method ) and auto features even I can take great pics . The cloth bag that it was shipped in serves as a good protector without adding the bulk of a camera bag . I've had no battery problems and I use a 2gb sans because I seldom store more than 50 pics before I download to my computer with the included usb wire . I haven't tried video yet , or custom settings . An indoor pic of a violet blouse showed up more blue that violet on my computer . All other colors seem pretty true . I photographed a deer at 30 yds with zoom and it came out awesome ! This camera showed very favorable in a recent Consumer Reports mag . I highly recommend this model but . . .10 megapix is very unforgiving to people my age lol !
    • 103 4  This camera is not your average camera . I must confess I had Canon cameras ever since I started purchasing digital cameras . Therefore I might be bias by giving an opinion without testing the others out there . Although , I did at one point own a Casio Slim camera and was satisfied . However , the picture quality and the features that a Canon offers I must say beats the rest by far . Good luck and happy snapping .
    • 112 4  Very good for people looking for easy point and shoot camera with very good picture quality . Image stabalization works very well . People with very little knowledge of changing the setting between Auto and night shooting modes can use the camera effectively . Definately recommended . Amazon did a great job of shippng on time .
    • 116 4  My husband and I love photography , and a few years ago we purchased a prosumer level SLR ( Canon ) . Since it was quite cumbersome , we found we weren't really bringing it with us anywhere ( other than to weddings ) , and because of this , we weren't taking as many pictures as we wanted . So , we decided to look for a really good quality , compact point-and-shoot for everyday use , at an affordable price ( under $200 incl . a second battery , a memory stick , and a case ) . We wanted something we could have with us at all times , in case inspiration struck . And I can't tell you how pleased we are with our purchase of the Canon SD1200IS . SIZE : The first thing you'll notice is how small and light it is . It fits easily into even my smallest purse . And even with its small size , it still boasts a 2.5 LCD screen . NO SHUTTERLAG : One of my favorite features of this camera is that you can take several pictures in a succession , without shutterlag , and without having to put it on a designated continual shoot setting . The other point-and-shoot digital cameras I've owned or have used in the past , have had quite a substantial lag time , and if you're photographing children , pets , sporting events and even weddings , you'd be lucky to get the shot you want . This camera is so fast , I often take 2 photos by accident . SMART AUTO : The ( smart ) AUTO mode , which I would normally advise against , actually works like you would expect it to , by choosing the proper settings for your conditions , automatically . Definitely a plus for those who want good-looking photos with minimal tinkering and effort . ( Which is everyone , I'm guessing ! ) MACRO : The Macro setting is also pretty incredible . Don't quote me on this , but I'm fairly certain that while in AUTO mode , if you're close enough to your subject that it would warrant the Macro lens , it will automatically switch to that setting so that your focus , and depth of field is spot-on . I took photos of some flowers on the macro setting and friends could not believe the incredible quality . DEPTH OF FIELD : I'm also highly impressed with the depth of field . Not until this camera had I thought this level of detail would be available on a consumer point-and-shoot , rather than a pro / prosumer SLR . LOW-LIGHT : And perhaps the best thing about this camera is it's ability to shoot effectively in low-light conditions . In most instances , I try to avoid using the flash . If you've ever tried to capture that warm , magical glow of your Christmas tree at night , you'll know that , without a tripod , it's virtually impossible . Not so , with this camera . On the Indoors setting with the flash turned off , I got some stunning , tripod-less photos of my home during the holidays and you would never have guessed that I used this camera and not my SLR . EASE OF USE : Having been so pleased with it ourselves , I recommended this camera to my girlfriend who is not even remotely technically saavy ( and , therefore , did not read the helpful manual with which it comes ) . Basically , she had some trouble with the menu navigation ( if you're at all familiar with Canon , you know they have their own way of doing things ) , but , after I gave her a quick 3 min . lesson on how to take basic , but good photos , and how to record and play-back video , she was off and running . We recently purchased a second SD1200IS as a gift for my father-in-law . His current 5 + - year-old camera is terrible in low-light ( he too hates to use the flash , but his photos look terrible ) and it goes through batteries like there's no tomorrow . And that reminds me of another great thing about this camera . . . . . BATTERY LIFE : I don't have any stats for you , but I'll just say that I did not expect a ) the battery to last as long as it did - it exceeded my expectations based on previous experience by at least 100% , and b ) these batteries charge fully ( from empty ) in about 30 min . As with any camera , I recommend purchasing a second battery so you never have to be without your camera . ( I just got one on Amazon for $6 . ) But don't take my word for it . As with most any major purchase , I recommend testing it out before you buy it . Go to your local Best Buy ( or equivalent ) and try one on for size . Press all the buttons , try all the settings and see for yourself . * * Note : This camera does not come with a memory card . You will need to purchase this separately before you can take any photos .
    • 119 4  This is such a cool , fun and easy camera to use and the best part is the shots come out near perfect ! Its sleek design and tiny size make it a joy to use . Pick your favorite color and enjoy taking pics everywhere . I especially love the ease of use with a Mac computer . The cable ( included ) plugs directly into the usb port and your photos come over nicely when import is selected . In the Program mode , you can choose some nice effects such as black and white , sepia , neutral and vivid making it feel like you're a pro ! I highly recommend this little camera . You're gonna love it too !
    • 134 4  I've used the camera alot since I got it , and am very pleased . What a great bang for the buck ! I had a pricier camera before and it was no where near as good as this one . The pics are sharp & colorful , the quality of photos when zoomed in is great , and the camera is small and so easily portable . Very user friendly , very easy to use . I love the funky yellow color I got . The only problem that I have is that I don't think it has a black & white mode . But I'm not one to read manuals , so maybe it does have it & I haven't found it yet . Battery life is good . I've only had to charge it once since I got it . Overall , I'm VERY pleased with this great little camera . I definately recommend it .
    • 136 4  There is nothing about this camera that I don't like . If there is a better camera for $150 , I'd be surprised . We have three of them in our family and I've never seen a bad photo taken by any of them . Great job Canon !
    • 146 4  Since most of my pictures are quick snapshots of family members , I need an easy-to-use camera . Not only is this an easy-to-use camera , the pictures are great too . I especially appreciate the automatic focus - very clear images . Even though the zoom is only 3x , I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of closeups . I did not want to spend more than $150 for my camera so I researched many different ones . For the money , I don't think I could get a better bargain . At this time , the only downside has been the need to recharge the battery sooner than I expected . I'm hoping this will improve as I get to know the camera better .
    • 177 4  We love the camera itself , but were surprised that it did not come with a memory card , nor was this information included at the time of ordering . I was able to walk to a neighborhood store to purchase a memory card , as we were leaving the next day on a vacation . I would have expected that the ordering instructions would have been clear that you must order a memory card as an additional accessory in order to use the camera . Otherwise it is a great little camera , but do remember to wear the wrist strap each time , as it would be very easy to drop - in fact a friend dropped hers in the water .
    • 185 4  Good camera . Got it for an excellent price when Cannon was introducing there next new line of cameras . Bought it to replace a cannon SD 770IS that was stolen & I liked it . This model is just as good but I don't see any major improvements . I'm not big camera person so this model does fine & should be fine for the average user .
    • 187 4  My wife and I were strolling through the store when she spotted this camera and said that she wanted her own camera , since I hogged the family camera , and that this one was cute . She was ready to purchase immediately , which I talked her out of doing . As a photographer I knew that these decisions took research , reading reviews on the internet and getting potential candidates in your hands to be scrutinized . After two weeks of consideration my research led me to the same camera that she had liked because of its ' size and color . Canon makes a great camera . Every digital still camera I've owned has been a Canon . This camera offers image stabilization , which is a must , and delivers a 10mp image . The mega pixal race has gotten out of hand , being an easy selling point of more pixals must mean better imaging . This is not the case . Often more pixals means more image noise , takes up more space on your computer and requires bigger memory cards . At any rate , this camera is compact , offers enough shooting variations to please someone with a background in photography and , as my wife says , is cute .
    • 189 4  I was looking for a small , 200 dollar price range , camera with as large an optical zoom range as possible . Of course I wanted all the other performance aspects that are expected of a 10 Megapixel camera . Previously owned Kodak cameras had performed very well , so I purchase a Kodak M380 from another online vendor . It didn't work . The auto focus function didn't . I renewed my search . Several friends have Canon cameras and looking at their photo results convincesd me to forget about higher zoom capability and accept a 3 to 1 zoom range in a camera that really works . I selected the Canon SD 1200 IS . I'm very happy with my decision . The camera continues to amaze me . The performance is more than I expected .
    • 198 4  The Canon SD1200Is , is a fantastic point & shoot camera . Picture quality is superb , its compact size is definitely a major plus . You would be hard pressed to find a camera , for this price , that beats all the features of the Canon .
    • 219 4  We are very happy with this camera . It is very easy to use right out of the box . Most of the features can be figured out very quickly without using the booklet . The pictures are great . The ' green square ' focus feature is great . We like the feel . Be sure to get a camera case for it - the camera is almost too small . Be careful though , the high res can easily make the pictures too big to upload or email . Downside : The preview mode is hard to get switched out of the ' picture-in-picture ' mode - we never could figure out why in the heck they put that totally useless feature in for . It can also be a little difficult to change the resolution - but you'll eventually figure it out . We compared this to a Nikon Coolpix that a friend had and we liked this one better .
    • 224 4  I bought a powershot A80 a few years ago when 4 megapixels seemed like enough . that my old powershot still takes good pictures led me to this one . my wife needed a small camera to take on business trips . well , for a reasonable price we get 10 megapixels , an easy to use automatic mode , and a big screen on the back to view pictures before savings . unless you have special picture taking needs ( and you know who you are ) the few dollars that you will spend on this compared to the lowest priced ones get you the perfect travel companion . it even has video !
    • 226 4  I don't often write reviews on many purchases but this camera deserves the praise ! I bought one for my son when we were looking for a small , easy to carry , inexpensive camera for him to take on his college study abroad in Tunisia . When he came home and showed us his over 500 photos I was blown away by the quality of the pictures . For this reason , when my wife and I were going on a Caribbean cruise , instead of schleping my Canon XSi or her S2IS both of which are much larger and clumsier to carry , we decided to order an SD1200IS along with a 4G card , accidental damage warranty and carrying case from Amazon , all for just over $200 . Well , we are back from our trip , attached the camera to directly to our TV to look at the pics and the SD1200 , once again , did not disappoint . Although I know my way around a digital camera I am far from an experienced or professional photographer . I can not give a detailed , technical review as many other have posted here . Let me just say what I liked : 1 . As I stated , the picture quality is wonderful and consistent given the price of this camera . 2 . The image stabilization works well and even pictures taken out the window of a moving vehicle are clear and crisp . 3 . Having an optical viewfinder is a plus , especially when taking pictures in the bright Caribbean sunlight . 4 . The size and weight make it comfortable to stick in a shirt or pant pocket while still being easy for someone with large hands to operate . 5 . I was concerned about the modest 3x zoom but found that the pictures are good enough that zooming into a particular area of the picture while in your photo software ( or even while viewing on your TV ) allows you to see close up clearly . 6 . I did not find the need to bother with any special settings , other than the occasional use of fill flash in the program mode . Otherwise I just left it on full auto and let it do its thing . 7 . Although the movie mode is not HD and I did not use it extensively , it is certainly good enough for the occasional recording of a video . The bottom line is that , for the price , size and ease of use of this camera I don't think it can be beaten . You will not be disappointed !
    • 228 4  This is one great little camera.I carry a small sub compact camera with me everywhere I go and I needed an up-grade from my 6 year old fixed focus Argus . Before I purchased this Cannon SD1200 Elph I read all the reviews I could find and I just can't believe some of the negative reviews . Either these people got a LEMON ( which I doubt ) or they just don't know how to operate a really good camera . The one very special thing that I love is the Date Stamp feature . It makes it so great to be able to see on your photos when and what time the picture was taken . The compactness of this camera is just perfect . No protrusions to snag as you retieve it from your pocket or case . I use a very inexpensive fabric belt case with a velcro flap . If only the owner would take a little time to read the manual or even take a camera class they would find that they could take excellent pictures . I take most of my pictures without the flash since falsh has a tendancy to wash out a lot of color . Most indoor shots can be taken quite successfuly by setting the camera to the SCN mode and turning off the flash . The auto mode is great too but just remember that it will automatically select the flash if its too dark and then if you are too far away from you subject the shot will turn out dark . The flash is ony good for short distances . I would not go farther than 6 feet . This is one solid little camera . Built like a fine piece of equipment . Just learn how to operate all the great features it has and you will be very , very happy with this camera P.S . I purchased this camera from AMAZON . I am very pleased with the price and service they provide .

  • 016 4  I purchased this camera from [ . . . ] after extensive research and following recommendations from Consumer Reports . The pictures were almost always blurry and out of focus , and darker than the natural brightness . Even beach shots in bright light on clear days looked like they were taken on an overcast day . This was surprising given the overwhelming number of positive reviews on Amazon and elsewhere . Perhaps I received a defective item ? I returned it . The videos however , were some of the best I have ever recorded in terms of color and sound clarity .
    • 051 4  This is a great camera considering the size and the price . Pictures are awesome with great quality and menu options are very much user friendly.I would definitely recommend others to buy this camera .
    • 089 4  I bought this as a gift for my wife after reading a positive review in Cons . Reports . She loves it . She took it on a trip with her sisiters and they all were impressed with the quality of the pictures and how easy it was to use . Several of them took down the model to buy for themselves .
    • 094 4  We bought this camera to replace an older Canon digital camera . This one has rechargable batteries , which our old one didn't have . I like still having a small viewfinder in addition to the larger window . The picture quality is quite good and it has a really nice face-finding focus that even has multiple face finders if you are taking a picture of a group .
    • 121 4  I am visually impaired and needed a camera that I could easily change settings and I need to have a view finder for taking pictures outside . This camera fills all those needs , plus it is small enough to slip in a pocket . Perfect . The price was reasonable , as well .
    • 171 4  The Canon Powershot is so easy to use - I love the Auto settings pictures come out great ! When I have more time , I will play around with more of the features , but for now - I'm loving the ease of pointing and clicking away . I especially love the image stabilizer as most of my pictures are of my very active 3.5 year old !
    • 204 4  I bought this camera for my daughter as I have one just like it only in pink . They are so user friendly and the pictures turn out so well . It is compact and easy to carry in my purse in a little case I bought so I never miss a Kodak moment . Or should I say Canon moment ! She is enjoying her camera as much as I am . No complaints here .
    • 205 4  I had an earlier model of the Cannon PowerShot Elph which I used and liked very much , but this camera is even better ! It is easy to use and takes terrific pictures . One big improvement is the life of the battery , along with a larger screen for viewing . I would highly recommend it .

  • 096 4  Not long after I bought this camera I traveled to Southern California and ended up taking over 800 pictures ! They all turned out great ! ! Just make sure you get a high speed SD card so the time it takes to save each picture after you take it can be reduced . I love how small it is ! I was able to ride a bunch of rides at Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland and didn't have to worry about the camera at all !
    • 067 4  I really like this camera . It takes nice great shots even in low light . I was using an old Kodak camera that used AA batteries and this camera is so much better ! I would recommend getting a spare battery . .
    • 084 4  I couldn't get a picture to be in focus unless it was bright day light and there was no movement around . Could have been a defective unit - but I was very unhappy . I returned it .

  • 098 4  Small enough to carry every place you go for those spontaneous grandkids pictures , a tad thicker than the canon sd 940 . The camera is small but easy to handle and has a good feel to it , I like the flat button arrangement on the back of the camera and have no trouble pushing them even with my big old hands , that just me tho . The LCD screen is only 2 1。

2inches but is very very clear and sharp to frame and review your pictures with . I carry mine in a little phone case that has a belt clip instead of a belt loop for easy on and off when getting in the car . At our state fair this year I took over 350 pictures some with flash in the barns and 8 short movie clips on one battery charge . . . A great camera for short movies get a 4 gig ( higher speed ) sd card ( ( none comes with the camera ) ) if taking alot of movies . No sd card comes with camera , make sure you have one , a 2gig sd card would be good for 750 pictures . I like using ( program mode ) , ( auto mode indoors seems to pick a very high iso and makes for to much noise in pictures ) , again thats just me tho . . . outdoors auto mode does better . I keep the iso at 100 or 200 or use ( auto iso ) in program mode . The camera boots up in 1 sec , shot to shot is 1.5 secs , with the flash on 3 or 4 secs . In auto mode it is trying to focas all the time and is very noisey doing so . . . make sure you are holding as still as you can ( so it won't think it should refocas again ) or it will blur your picture that is another reason I use program mode but you still have to hold very still . And if your new to this digital camera stuff remember to save your pictures first and then low level format your sd card .
    • 179 4  Even if your daughter is not really much into taking photos , get her one of these cute pink canon cameras . The take great pictures and she won't be shy about taking it out to snap some candids . This is especially true if you daughter is going on a trip and you want her to actually take photos to share her trip with you .

  • 102 4  This is our second ( or third ? ) small digital camera . The first couple were first generation models with minimum features and resolution . Then we started using big DSLRs . I expected this ' little camera ' to have minimal quality , but I was wrong . This camera approaches the DSLRs in both features and image quality . I was especially impressed with the video it took . The only negative I've seen is that when you zoom in at some point it switches over to ' digital zoom ' and the quality drops dramatically . This can be turned off , so it's really not a problem , just something to be aware of . My wife was looking for a small camera she could have with us when the DSLR was too big and this little guy more than fills the bill .
    • 115 4  I bought this camera to replace my older digital camera prior to a trip to Italy . This camera took outstanding pictures with and without flash in low light situations . My pictures came out perfect and helped me retain the wonderful memories of my trip . I bought this camera on a recommendation by a friend who has done a lot of research on digital cameras . He was certainly right about how good this camera was . I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants a great point and shoot camera .
    • 131 4  My wife was wanting a nice small camera that she could keep in her purse . We have a Nikon D60 that we both love and takes wonderful pictures , but you cant really drag that around everywhere . Its the type of camera you take with you when you know you want to take pictures . This Cannon PowerShot takes as good or better pictures then the D60 and she can take it everywhere . It is the perfect camera to buy if you want a high quality camera with you at all times , for those random moments that you want to remember . . . . . or for those not-so-random moments that you want to remember but your friends would pay money for you to forget !
    • 132 4  This Camera is not only really really easy to use but takes really good pictures and is a nice size . I took it on a recent school trip and it served me really well . Also the battery lasts a long time . My old camera had regular AA batteries . . . this special rechargeable camera battery is so much better . If you're looking for something easy , convenient , affordable and of good quality . . . go for it .
    • 138 4  I just got this to go to Costa Rica and take pictures . My previous camera took horrible pictures , and had bad picture quality . I had just got back from a trip from Germany and did not have that many great pictures , and wanted a better one . This camera has great picture quality , is small and easy to carry around . The settings are easy to use and there are no mysteries where and how the camera is used .
    • 149 4  this little camera fits my needs exactly . it has an optical viewfinder so the screen can be turned off to extend battery life . the zoom is a nice range . size is perfect to take hiking , skiing or hunting as it can be slipped into a small pouch or pocket under your jacket for quick access .
    • 181 4  I did a lot of shopping around before buying this . I looked at Canon , Nikon , and many other popular brands . After deciding on this model , I couldn't wait for it to arrive . I have been SO happy with it . My husband is a photographer and uses a large , fancy camera , and even he is impressed with the picture quality on such a small camera . My daughter and I share this camera and we both give it an A + !

  • 107 4  I got this camera to replace my old Canon digital elph SD510 . I am really pleased with this camera . The recycle time is the biggest improvement as well as the image quality and great image stability . The facial recognition is excellent and quick . I even found that it will recognize a face on a TV screen . The battery life is also greatly improved and extra batteries are easy to find online . With a 4 GB chip you can take 700 pictures or so , plenty for most of us . Overall great little camera for the money .
    • 109 4  I gave my neice an SD1100 last year and she is still raving about it . I decided to buy one for myself and , of course , they were discontinued . The SD1200 turned out to be a fantastic little camera . It takes great pictures and yet it fits easily into a pocket . It's the perfect camera for travel . I couldn't be happier with my purchase .
    • 212 4  I have an old Canon SD600 and decided to finally update . Ordered this because of my good experience with Canon and it did not disappoint . Pictures are clear and in focus . I was skeptical about the face recognition feature , but it's a real help . The camera is amazingly small and the rounded corners give it a nice feel . It fits into even the tiniest camera cases . Looking forward to taking it on vacation this year .

  • 125 4  I borrowed a Canon camera from a friend and even if it was only a 5MP one , i was impressed by its quality , esp . on daylight . That made me decide that for a point and shoot camera , Canon would be the authority . The only drawback is when not enough lighting is provided & some preselected settings , like the one with casio , though I would never trade it for the picture quality . But all in all , this is a perfect buy .
    • 041 4  Awesome camera . The automatic focus allows clear , crisp action shots and the pictures are crystal clear . I had used my daughter's Canon Powershot 6 MP and loved the quality of pictures . When I decided to start a business , I needed a camera that would show fine detail and give the customer a good idea of the quality of the item . This camera does that and more .
    • 063 4  bought this camera for our africa trip . Within days it started to have lens errors and took blurry pictures . Canon warranty claims it has been water damaged . I have always taken care of my camera and know it was not dropped or near water or had any water related accident . Truth is , Canon's warranty is non existent and this product is not worth your money . I will never buy a canon product again

  • 127 4  Bought this following a friend's recommendation . It is a wonderful , easy to use , very compact camera that can be easily carried in your purse or pocket .
    • 169 4  Point and shoot ! It's that simple . If you want to play with the settings , you can . . . but why ?
    • 221 4  Great camera ! The size is perfect for slipping into your pocket but not small enough to crush . It takes great photos , very impressive all around !

  • 140 4  This is a nice camera . We are still testing it and so far , it has presented very good quality . It's a bit heavy for a small camera , but I guess that means that it is built well . The screen is pretty fast when turned on / off . The devices are very easy to understand , however , it is always important to read the manual to better use the camera's settings . A lot of times the reason why we don't get the results we expect is because we don't know how to use the camera properly .
    • 082 4  This is the best camera I have ever owned . It's picture quality is amazingly clear and crisp . The zoom feature is very nice as well . With the features of auto focus , lighting , etc . it makes it impossible to take a bad picture . I'm still learning all the features the camera has to offer , but so far I'm extremely satisfied . It also comes in many other colors which can make it fun and personal .
    • 194 4  Features are easy to learn , especally the changing of the memory card and battery . The LCD display is great . However , as someone who is fairly new to didgital photography , I found the focusing step with the shutter takes some practice . That is certainly no fault of the camera . I'm happy with my purchase .

  • 155 4  When our Fuji digital camera quit , I started investigating cameras and was happy to discover this little Canon camera . I purchased it based on its excellent reviews , both here and elsewhere . We couldn't afford a more expensive camera , but still wanted a camera that produced good pictures . This camera produces very nice pictures . It's cute , small ( fits in the palm of your hand ) and so very easy to use . I figured much of it out without even opening the book up . Later , after having some difficulties with blurring on shots with my kids moving , I downloaded the accompanying disc and found the information I needed . Change it to the program mode and set the camera on kids / pets - problem solved . No more blurriness . I also love to switch it to black and white or sepia photos ( also in the program mode ) . Believe me , I'm not technologically inclined , but this camera is a cinch to use ! Plus , the video mode is SO easy ! It was great to be able to switch it to video mode the other night and catch my kids decorating the Christmas tree while singing Christmas carols . The battery lasts a very long time and is a breeze to charge - and charges very quickly as well . I love this camera !
    • 012 4  I have been buying Canon Powershots for years : SD400 , SD600 , SD1100 ( purchased in 2008 ) and have greatly enjoyed their portability and excellent , sharp images . I even hiked and * trail ran * with them , and they have held up well considering . However , lately the image quality has degraded to what I would call poor . Powershots used to be sharp from edge to edge ( with possibly a * very slight * softness at the corners ) . However , I have now tried 3 recent Powershots including two SD12000s that have significant areas of image blurriness right out of the box . The SD1200 I just returned had a full * 1 / 3 * of the image area on the right that was blurry and / or showed double images . I even sent a recent SD1100 ( purchased 2009 ) for repair and it came back blurry from the factory repair center ! It was a brand-new optical assembly . I'm not buying another Powershot until they recognize and fix their quality issues .
    • 032 4  I bought this as a replacement for my older Canon Powershot 850 that I dropped by accident , and have been unfortunately disappointed . While the camera itself is lighter and a bit less bulky , the image stabilizer is sub-par . I feel like whenever my subject is not still ( and what young child is ? ) , I get a blurry shot , which never happened with my older model . I chose this model to be economical , but I'm kind of sorry I didn't ante up for something else instead .
    • 035 4  I was origially interested in a different Canon Powershot , but got side-tracked by this one because of its color ( I'm a girl , afterall ) . I couldn't be happier . The camera is so user-friendly that I have yet to flip through the instruction manual . It takes great photos , practically does all the work for you , and is small enough to fit in the smallest purse . A great buy !
    • 053 4  This is our second Canon - - our first was pretty good but they have definitely kicked out our disappointments with the first in this newer model ( e.g . they include a battery meter and improved battery life ) . The picture quality is great for a point and shoot and I appreciate the versatility of the functions . Overall the value to cost ratio is very satisfying - - for example we found a nikon coolpix on sale for $88 but quickly sold it after finding the camera to be cheap in construction and poor in picture quality . So we bought the slightly more expensive powershot and got a little better than what we expected . Additionally , consumer reports has consistently scored Canon at the top of its point and shoots and this model is the top scorer from CR's most recent report .
    • 060 4  After dropping my SD1100 in the ocean , I was a bit miffed to find the upgrade ( the SD1200 ) actually cheaper than the model I had wanted . But I purchased the new one anyhow and although it's taken some getting used to , I love the features and the portability ( believe me , I'm much more careful now ! ) . I will say , though , that the color was a bit more teal than steely blue like my old one , but I love that there is no delay when I hit the power button , that the zoom is incredible ( perfect for taking pics of the kids at the playground without them knowing ) , and the shutter speed is fast ! No more missed shots due to a delay . Plus , the price is great - - how can you get a cheaper camera with all these features ? !
    • 214 4  We bought this camera after our daughter played with our other Canon Elph at the beach and got sand stuck in the lens extender . We loved our other camera and really wanted to stay within the Canon family with our new one . Picture quality is excellent and the video feature saved us from buying a separate video camera . I especially love the zoom feature with videos ( wasn't available on our old camera ) . All in all , it's a great price for a great camera . Perfect for taking shots of my on-the-go toddler !

  • 202 4  The SD1200 is a great camera for my needs . We recently took it it on vacation and were very happy with the pictures . It's small enough to carry anywhere and very simple to use . A great point-and-shoot type of camera .
    • 076 4  Out of the box and on auto this thing takes great pictures , more then good enough for non-professional family type stuff . It's also incredibly fast at auto focusing and getting to the right settings on its own , that's probably because of the digic 4 processor but either way you can shake it up and it'll refocus and acclimate itself in less then a second . It's awesome . There are marginally better point and shoots available but for the price / quality this is your best bet by a long shot . Someone else mentioned it but the lens and auto focus do make a faint buzzing sound frequently , no big deal . Update : bought a 2nd one with a spare battery and some other goodies for family stuff .
    • 118 4  We got this camera for my daughter for Christmas after my fater-in-law raveda about his SD1000 . I cannot figure out how this camera has so many great reviews ? ! Are their expectations THIS low ? We have a 9 year old inexpensive point and shoot that takes better photos ! If everything is perfectly still and there is excellent lighting , this camera will take a decent photo . But I'd guess 90% ( or more . . it's rare for us to get one that's not ) of our photos of people are blurry . And the flash is worthless . It WAY overexposes pale skin tones . I'll upload some of our average photos with this camera later . I expected much better picutre qualit for one hundred seventy dollars . Our camera phones take better pictures . For what it's worth , we don't use auto mode as per other reviews , but that doesn't seem to make a difference . We did go to the store to look at this camera before we purchased and it handles well and pictures seem good looking at the lcd . But when you get them off the camera , they suck . I really enjoy photography and thought maybe my daughter could join me , but it's fairly pointless with this camera . : ( I won't ever buy another canon camera and will encourage anyone thinking about it to borrow this one before they decide if canon is the brand for them .

  • 210 4  I converted some time back from the coolpix to the powershot SD900 then to the SD870IS and finally now to the SD1100 with all the advancements that two years of evolution should bring . The higher density brings some terrific pictures ! Though at night with any back ground lighting you will have to do battle with the noise . The movies are much improved over the 870IS especially when zoomed but the quick draw point & shoot is a bit degraded as about 20% of pictures will be out of focus . This was not an issue with the two Cannon predecessors I owned ? The power button is smaller which is a great safety improvement as my last camera was totaled when the power button was accidentally pushed on while in my pocket , the lens tried to extend in my pocket but could not thereby jamming - boom totaled camera . So by upgrading I get higher density shots with great quality especially zoom , better movies , even a more compact camera , but take double shots for the 20% that I plan may be out of focus . I don't know if it's dynamic stabilization or electronic focus which is giving me trouble ? Then again could be user error as I haven't taken time to read the instruction book as I was already familiar with the earlier powershot models I owned . Would I recommend it ? Sure , for the price it's an impressive value .
    • 019 4  A very capable camera for the price , and wonderful for on-the-go pictures . I previously owned the Canon SD 1000 and while I enjoyed the features it had , wished it included the image stabilization IS feature . The 1200 has IS , and it has made noticeable improvements on those quick shots . The camera takes wonderful pictures in a variety of light settings , and is incredibly easy to use . All in all , for the price , great camera and highly recommended .
    • 039 4  We used this an a trip to D.C . It took amazing no-flash pictures in dimly lit museums . This was many steps ahead of my daughters two year old Canon SD1000IS . Buy it , you won't regret it .
    • 062 4  I was not pleased with this camera . The picture quality was not like the sd1100IS model . I shot over 100 pictures at a family event & less than 15 pictures were salvageable . I previously own the Canon sd1100IS camera which was stolen recently ; thus my need for the purchase of a new camera . When I saw that Canon had a newer model of the camera I previously owned , I thought it was going to be another great little camera . I was WRONG . I don't know why Canon had to change this sd1100IS model , because it was already a great little camera . I eventually returned the sd1200IS camera & purchased the sd1100IS model . I am now totally happy with my decision to repurchase the sd1100IS model . There is definitely a different in the picture quality between the two camera . I hope Canon realizes that Newer doesn't ' always equal better . There were a few good things I could say about the SD1200IS model was it's smaller size , bright LCD screen and faster shots . But picture quality is more important , to me , than those slight improvements .
    • 114 4  The SD1200IS is an excellent camara . The controls are intuitive and the picture quality is outstanding . I especially like the optical viewfinder . Most of my photos are taken outdoors in bright sunlight and the LCD screen on my previous camara was impossible to see . I espacially like the fact that the green focus indicator is visible from the optical viewfinder .
    • 173 4  If you want a small , very portable camera , the SD1200IS is a great choice . Picture quality is good for a very small camera and it is so small that it is easy to take everywhere .

  • 213 4  I recently purchased this camera for my Dad for Father's Day . I have an older model that I really like so I thought I would get him the updated version . He wanted a small digital camera so that he would take more pictures and not have to carry around his old camera ( the kind with the huge zoom lens attached ) . He is a really good photographer but hes older and used to film so the whole digital thing was like a scary mystery . Now he loves his digital camera and takes it with him all the time and has gotten back into taking great pictures wherever he goes . The color and quality that the camera produces are amazing and it is easy to use with a simple auto mode or you can change various settings , which takes a little more time to sit down and learn but it's not too complicated . This is a great camera and i suggest cannon over other brands with similar compact cameras .
    • 011 4  The Canon Powershot takes pictures superfast and ultra-clear . It even takes photos with a subtle depth of field , in other words you can focus on something in the foreground and the background will be slightly blurred . Its a lot like using a 35mm , or the Digital Rebel . The photos are amazing ! I used to have a Sony and everything looked so flat . You can get some real artistic shots with this little beauty . . . . and the best part is that its shocking hot pink and I got mine for under $200 ! ! ! I love it : )
    • 038 4  Very compact , takes great pictures . The only drawback is that the battery needs to be charged before use and that limits spontaneity . I bought a second battery to keep in the charger .
    • 151 4  I purchased the Canon Powershot SD1200 and I have been pleased with the size because it is easy to take on trips . Sometimes the pictures will blur or lights will look blurry but it may be just me . For the majority of time , it seems to take pretty decent pictures . I am glad I purchased it .
    • 157 4  This Canon is an upgrade to previous versions and it is everything I was looking for in a super compact point and shoot . Canon again promises and provides super clear photos from an easy to use product . Very satisfied . PS : love the option to get this in quirky colors ( orange ) .
    • 161 4  Canon SD1200 is small in size , fits in your palm . Picture quality is excellent . It is better than what I expected about this product .
    • 163 4  This is my first digital camera I've bought and so far I'm loving it . Its a great size . I carry mine everywhere. The pictures look amazing . Very easy to control . Love the color too ! It takes great quality pictures for such a great price .
    • 175 4  I love the color of the camera ( orange ) and it takes good pictures . Still getting use to the features and messing around with it , but overall I am satisfied .
    • 183 4  I am very pleased with this camera . Easy to use , very good quality pictures for this price range .
    • 196 4  Awesome camera . . . Did have a little trouble with the shipping as the first camera was lost in transit and then they sent another by 1 day shipping ( no addl cost ) and I just didnt stop using this camera since then

  • 215 4  We've only used it a couple of times but so far it's good and simple to use if going auto . The manual setting seems to be a little tricky because the image stabilization doesn't come up but we're trying to figure it out . Shouldn't be too hard , I hope . Better than the Sony we had .

    • 218 4  We previously had a Cannon G3 and loved the quality of pics and the color rendition , but it is a larger camera and cant put it in shirt pocket and heavy for purse . This one is a lot smaller , quality pics , larger lcd , easy to use , and has image stabilization . So far , we love it . Does not come with memory card so get one and an extra battery .
      • 097 4  We had been looking to replace our old camera which had bad recovery time to take the next picture . This Canon takes care of that job and much more . It is easy to use and takes great pictures . We recommend it highly !
      • 191 4  Always loved these little cameras . We go through them with our business and have had a few different brands . These are very easy to use .

    • Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) It is almost too small for my fingers but sure fits well in my top pocket . I love the way there is no delay between pressing the button and the camera taking the picture . . . I suspect the faster Ultra II chip helps with this . Snap them off one after the other . . . no problem ( without flash ) . The picture quality seems excellent . I appreciate the viewfinder as an alternate method for framing the picture . . . sometimes it is hard to see the screen in sunlight . . . or for just quickly pointing it in the right direction and photoshopping the resulting 10 megapixel image . No buyers remorse here . . . can't find any short-comings . . . well , OK , the little door that covers the usb port has a cheezy hinge .

      • 167 4  i love canon and this camera does not disappoint . my last elph was a little more user friendly , but having had one before i figured it out pretty quickly . the quality of the pictures is great and it's very easy to carry around being about the size of a business card , and light weight . plus it's adorable and green .

    • Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) The image quality is superb for a small camera and the auto function is a gem . Canon is gold and top quality . If you want fast and simple set it on auto and just point and shoot . No matter the setting , lighting , etc , it figures everything out , iso , stabilization , vs flash or no flash , etc , and even on full digital zoom when it looks all choppy on the screen , the pics come out AMAZING . I love this camera and I love the AQUA BLUE COLOR it's the most aesthetically pleasing . TRIPLE A + + + + + for top quality product and superior & quick service buying from Amazon . Thank you : )

    • Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) The SD1200 has some big changes over its predecessor SD1100 , and is the smallest , best designed Elph I've used thus far . I've owned many models of Elph , this is my 6th or 7th , so my review is aimed especially at other serial Canon owners . I mostly compare the SD1200 to the SD1100 . * The big changes : Digic4 and a larger CCD sensor . The slight increase in CCD size ( 1 / 2.3 vs 1 / 2.5 ) should make for cleaner photos . And Digic4 promises faster / cleaner shots also . * You get 10MP vs 8MP on the SD1100 , and medium ( M1 ) size is now 6MP . JPG quality is down to 2 setting : Fine or Normal . * SD1200 is only slightly smaller than the SD1100 , but feels notably smaller by virtue of curved edges and the LCD being flush with the body ( no bump-out ) . * The 1200 now feels as small as this design can shrink . Good news : my average-sized male hands can still comfortably hold it , barely not covering lens , flash , or resting on the LCD . But the round power-button is now almost too small to press if you had big fingers and no fingernails . * 1200 ' s new battery is a higher capacity 1000mAh ( vs ~ 760mAh for SD1100 ) . There's also a new charger ( not compatible with the old batteries ) , a glossy white-colored model to blend into your wall . * The buttons and menus are streamlined . There's now a button for review mode , pressing it a 2nd time takes you back to the previous state . Handy . The slider has dedicated AUTO and Manual settings , no longer need to use menus for that switch . * Continuous mode and ISO now are in the Function Menu ( on the SD1100 , they had dedicated buttons ) . * A SD card is no longer included . This makes sense to me , a 32MB card is barely useful , and with the downward pressure on electronics prices , I can't imagine Canon wanting to bundle a more expensive / bigger card . Some people will find this lack annoying . * The A / V output is gone , and the USB connector now serves both purposes ( both kinds of included cables now have a USB-end ) * A new version of Canon software is required for this model , Zoombrowser 6.3 . Canon typically requires a new release for each new family / season of cameras . Unfortunately , the CameraWindow software has been intentionally dumbed-down in the 6 . x software and no longer offers the options to delete your photos ( have to go through the OS ) , nor to chose custom naming for the downloads . I say intentionally , since I asked Canon customer-support about it and they stated the changes were not bugs . The last Canon software to still have that functionality was 5 . x , corresponding to the SD1000 and other cameras released that season . * In casual indoor tests , the 1200 seemed more ready to go to ISO400 ( often too noisy to be useful ) when the SD1100 would have chosen ISO200 . * The SD1200 and SD1100 have identical specs on their optics . However , I noticed a more pronounced barrel-distortion on the 1200 at extreme wide-angle . ( still only noticable in close-up shots of straight-edged items at wide-angle ) * In a casual speed test , the SD1200 took / stored photos notably faster the SD1100 ( same scene , continuous-mode , same brand SD card ) , despite the 1200 ' s image size being larger . * Canon's paper manuals have been shrinking steadily . With this model , the only manual included is a quick-start guide , the rest is on CD-ROM . * The packaging is even more efficient than before , about half the size of the SD1100 ' s box . * Sadly , there is no HD video mode , although all of the other Elphs released this spring had HD . SD1200 owners are stuck with 640x480 video . Canon has several sub-series within the compact Elph line , varying mostly by asthetics and optics . The SD1200 is successor to the series that included the SD1100 , SD1000 , and SD600 . These all favor a classic , slim design . If you're unfamiliar with Canon's Powershot cameras , there's lots of good material out there on camera sites such as dpreview . In general , the small sensors and optics in all ultra-compact digital cameras lead to some optical quirks ( such as barrelling ) , chromatic aberrations , over / under-exposure in bright sunlight / shade , and underpowered flashes . That's intrinsic to the size of camera , and vendors try to correct these effects in their on-board processing . My opinion is that Canon does a good job of correcting for these issues and the Elphs including the SD1200 take very good photos for their size . It's questionable that a SD1100 owner would specifically find this a compelling upgrade other than the Digic4 , but this is an excellent compact camera in all ways . Apart from the noteworthy quirks : the lack of HD and the limited features in the download software , this camera is Highly Recommended .

      • 003 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) I don't typically bother reviewing products because I usually only buy things that already have a lot of reviews .
      • 006 4  I bought the SD110 ( 3.2MP ) back in 2004 and decided it was time to upgrade this year as it was showing some age . The latest version of that same line is the SD1200 . I have had it for a few weeks now and have a few observations . The SD1200 is much faster from the time you turn it on until it is ready to shoot as compared to the SD110 . Next , the screen is far better than the one on the SD110 . Very bright and readable even in sunlight . The camera itself is smaller than the SD110 as you might expect but does feel a little cheaper . So far I have taken the SD1200 to three main events . A birthday party , K - 4 graduation , backyard play time . The birthday part pictures did not turn out well in automatic mode . We were indoors ( Pump-it-up ) and the lighting was probably not the best . The images were blurry for the most part . I had the same issue at the second event ( K - 4 graduation ) but this time I switched to manual mode and used the indoor setting . This greatly improved the picture . Finally , the outdoor shots turned out looking wonderful in automatic mode . With the SD110 the automatic mode was always better than any of the manual settings . It seems with the SD1200 that is not the case . I will continue to explore the settings / features of the camera . I was expecting the SD1200 to be far superior to my 5 year old SD110 but so far the pictures themselves have not turned out markedly better .
      • 010 4  I got this camera because my son is nearly 2 and I'd noticed that my photo taking had dramatically dropped off . He'd be doing something adorable and I'd run to get the camera and by the time I got back he'd be five activities past whatever he'd been doing . I needed a Dad camera - one that was small enough to carry with me all the time , started up fast , had good image stabilization and face detection , decent zoom and flash , was 100% automatic ( no tweaking with portrait mode vs . sunny day mode vs . contrast settings while my son was peddling his tricycle for the first time ) , and was cheap enough that I wouldn't mind dropping it occasionally . The Cannon SD1200IS is that camera . It's been a joy to use . I got the grey leather Cannon case to go with it and I now carry it everywhere . Looks a bit geeky ( with the case it's about the size of a blackberry ) but I've caught tons spontaneous shots that would have vanished in the time it would take to get a larger camera . I agree with other posters - the battery and USB covers are a bit flakey - but the rest of the camera is solid . I've dropped it from waist height twice now with no issues . A couple unexpected benefits : 1 ) My son now loves taking pictures himself ( I hold the camera - he aims and pushes the button ) - and the auto focus works well enough that some of his shots come out pretty well . It's neat to see what's important enough in his world to take a photo of ( mostly toy trains and cars these days ) and he's very proud of his own pictures . 2 ) I didn't know it when I purchased but the SD1200IS has a built in accelerometer so Picasa now auto-rotates all my imported photos - 15 minutes of time magically recovered from each week ! Highly , highly recommended ; - D
      • 013 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Orange ) ( Electronics ) I am typically the BIGGEST fan of these Canon ELPH cameras .
      • 020 4  Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom ( Brown ) The link provided above was the camera that I had previously to owning this one , and it was far superior despite having a lower MP count and being an earlier model . The PowerShot SD1200IS took grainy photographs if taken without flash , and in auto - mode it isn't possible to force flash . When I tried to take pictures of my 2 year old nephew who of course does not know how to sit still , the pictures came out blurry . If I used the Program setting , it took a long time for the picture to take , resulting in blurry photos . If I used auto , it came out blurry anyways ! It also takes poor photographs in bad lighting . It also does not have the color accent tool which I loved to use and have been on every Canon camera I have had so far . It also is so light & round that it feels like plastic in my hands , like a toy , though that is just my personal opinion . I highly suggest getting a SD1100IS PowerShot over this one , any day .
      • 026 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) Initially , I hesitated to switch from traditional film to digital out of fear that a new camera would be too complicated or difficult to understand .
      • 030 4  I needed a simple , easy to use camera for my wife . She previously used a Canon PS 50 which she found to be too bulky , heavy , and confusing . The SD 1200 IS fits the bill perfectly . First , its focusing is incredible . If you are taking portraits it focuses on the face or faces of the subject automatically . If you want to take a macro shot it also focuses automatically . I was surprised that the picture quality of macro subjects was better than what I can get on my Rebel XTi . I also like the fact that it has a viewfinder for those sunny days when the LCD display is difficult to use . In brief , this is the perfect point and shoot camera for the individual who wants a simple , easy to use camera , that is light and requires no photography knowledge . The only complaint I have is that it does not come with a memory card and when we bought it there was nothing on the description ( or on the Canon site ) saying you need to purchase one separately .
      • 033 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) This is a top notch compact camera . Much of this camera's features have been written in other reviews . Here is what I would like to add . Pros : 1 ) One of the major benefits of this camera is not just the hardware ( Digic is one of the best photo processors and the lens of this camera is very good for a compact camera ) , but the software . The operating system of this camera is very usable and has a lot of functionalities . You can , for example , change the language settings among 20 or so different languages . My older Panasonic Lumix camera did not offer such a feature ( it offered only 3 other languages ) . If you are a techie and want to customize every feature of your camera , then this camera will definitely will meet your needs . 2 ) The battery seems to last forever . With one charge , you can easily take 200 + pictures with flash and still have good deal of battery power left . For most trips fewer than 15 days ( and probably lot more ) , you will not need to bring the recharger unless you plan to go crazy with taking pictures . 3 ) This camera easily fits into your pocket and its surface , including the display , is scratch resistent . Cons : 1 ) When used in the auto mode , which is the default mode , there is a very noticeable lag of about 1.5 - 2.0 seconds between the press of the button and the actual snapshot . This camera is not made for motion capture snapshots ( you can still take motion video shots ) . Conclusion : You can't go wrong with this camera as long as your expectations are reasonable . This camera will not take the highest quality pictures like the bulky and much more expensive SLR often used by professionals . And you will not be able to take 10 snapshots in 5 seconds as often required in motion capture photography . But you will take very good ( just not magazine cover quality ) pictures and the stillshots will be the envy of your friends .

      • 036 4  After four years of using the heck out of ( and LOVING ) my SD600 , the two batteries no longer hold charges well , so it was either $80 for two new Canon batteries ( I know I can get off brands but I don't think they last as long ) , I decided to spend the bucks on the new Canon SD1200 . I only tested it for one day because when I pulled it out of the box , the LCD screen had a HUGE scratch on it , so I knew I would be returning it . But I took a bunch of test shots to see if I really liked it and wanted to re-purchase it . Keeping in mind I didn't get to review every aspect of the camera , what was my overall review after one day's worth of test shots ? In one word : meh . There were highs and lows / pros and cons . I am sure I would grow to love it , but there are definitely things I like and things I don't . CONS ? * The power button is harder to turn on ( moreso one-handed like I normally do since I am rushing to take a quick picture of the baby ) . It doesn't stick out as much as on the SD600 . ( On the 600 I could quick push the raised button with my fingernail . On the 1200 the button is more flat so it's harder to reach . ) Other reviews have liked this , as they don't want to accidentally turn their camera on . . . but in the four years I've used this camera , I've never had it turn on accidentally in any pocket , purse , bag , etc . . . so I don't like the new button style . I am sure , with time , I would get used to it . . . but my first impression wasn't favorable . * The slider bar ( between auto , program , and video ) is not as easy to slide as the 600 - - and it's a bit harder to do one-handed as well ( which is how I normally use it , especially when taking pics of the baby ) . Again , I think the button was raised more on the 600 than on the 1200 . I can slide the bar on the 600 by feeling the clicks as it moves from one status to the next - - and can easily flick back and forth with ease . With the 1200 , I had to pay special attention to moving it and I often overshot the status I wanted . Again , I am sure with time I would get used to it . . . but my first impression wasn't favorable . * The Auto function didn't seem to work as well as I thought it would - - I got A LOT of blurry and too-dark and too-bright pictures that I really thought would be normalized with such a lauded AUTO feature . And I was sure I did things right ( hold the button down halfway first , etc . ) . I really wanted to love the new features of Auto because I currently use Program all the time to adjust the amount of flash ( so I can take closeups of the boy without blinding him or to add more flash when it's dark in the room ) and Auto should take care of that . It may have just needed more experimentation ? But then again , it shouldn't have - - because it's AUTO . * The wrist strap isn't adjustable . It's not something I use a lot , but when I want it , I like having it there ( like on a carnival ride or hanging over the balcony of a cruise ship ) . It's just a little thing , but it could be a very big thing if it's something that causes you to lose your camera . ( If I bought this camera again , I would switch straps with my current camera , the 600 . ) PROS ? * The ability to use a 16GB HDSC card ! Pure heaven . . . especially since I take close to 1000 pictures a month of the kidlet ! The 600 can handle a 2GB card which fits a lot of photos , and I rarely am away from home for so long that I can't offload the pictures . . . but I love having space and 16GB is enough to take tons of pictures and long videos without having to edit / delete photos while you go . * I do like the specific play button ( instead of it being on the slider bar ) . * This camera takes the easiest and best macro photos of any I've ever owned . Pure awesome . ( But how often do I need that ? Not very . ) * Some Auto flash shots turned out way better than I expected . Our living room is about 18 ' long and often dark . I just took a quick test shot from the kitchen and it lit up the entire room like daylight ! * Most of the menu options are the same as my 600 so the learning curve wouldn't be too high . * I love that it's available in colors . Silver tends to get lost in the shuffle of mess on the counters or in a bag . But colors really stand out so it's easier to find quickly . So , will I be buying this camera again ? I'm honestly still deciding , but am leaning towards probably not . I was really excited to get a new / better / faster camera . . . but it just didn't give me the big WOW factor I wanted and was expecting . And as you know with cameras , the next thing is just around the corner . . .
      • 037 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) Very compact , takes great pictures . The only drawback is that the battery needs to be charged before use and that limits spontaneity . I bought a second battery to keep in the charger .
      • 040 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Pink / Red ) ( Electronics ) Awesome camera .
      • 042 4  I bought this camera for my niece and tested it first . Pros : 1 . small size , perfect in fact . Small enough to go in my jeans pocket , but shaped just fine for my arthritic hands . 2 . has an optical viewfinder 3 . love that it automatically changes to macro in the auto mode when you get really close to an object . 4 . flash works really well . 5 . seems to work well in low light situations . I took pictures while going through a drive through at night and the menu board looks great , and the business next to the drive through looks great . Did not have the flash on . 6 . I held the camera and took a lot of pictures of my own face in different lighting situations and every one of the pictures turned out really well . Perfect focus every time . 7 . very quick shutter response 8 . Battery charges quickly and lasts a good while 9 . robin's egg blue very pretty color 10 . picture quality acceptable Cons : 1 . makes a lot of little noises , but I quickly learned to ignore them . Didn't notice them much after a while . Not a deal breaker . 2 . no paper instruction book - CD instead . 3 . not as easy for me to figure out as my larger Canon A720IS . Guess it is because I am so used to my own camera . 4 . only has 3X zoom and I am used to 6X I am buying one of these for myself next week , but ordering the charcoal color so I will have a different color from my niece . I love my current camera , but it doesn't fit in my pants pocket , and sometimes that is what you need . Hope this helps .

      • 044 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I have owned many of the power shot cameras and this one has been by far the worst I have owned .
      • 047 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Pink / Red ) ( Electronics ) I own a DSLR myself , but my wife wanted a little camera she could put in her purse or pocket when going to parties or motorcycle rides . I love Nikon's products for the bigger cameras , but they have really dropped the ball when moving into this market . Canon has yet again produces a great camera which is easy to use and produces outstanding photos . Turn it on , point , and shoot . My wife shouldn't have to mess with shutter speed or aperture settings to get a great photo , and with this camera she doesn't have to . My only complaint is with how cheap SD cards are these days , Canon should have included a small one with this camera . If you are buying one , don't forget to pick up a SD card at the same time .

My only complaint is with how cheap SD cards are these days , Canon should have included a small one with this camera . If you are buying one , don't forget to pick up a SD card at the same time .
      • 052 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Orange ) ( Electronics ) This is our second Canon - - our first was pretty good but they have definitely kicked out our disappointments with the first in this newer model ( e.g . they include a battery meter and improved battery life ) .
      • 054 4  I'm very satisfied with the Camera . It takes great well exposed , sharp images and is very compact , It's roughly the size of a 7 / 8 thick Credit Card and it has a nice solid metal body feel to it . I use it as a second camera when I don't want to haul around my bulkier Digital SLR . The optical viewfinder is a nice feature . Canon seems to be one of the only brands to still make subcompact / compact cameras with an optical viewfinder . It saves battery life and if you take shots with the LCD function turned off Canon claims you can get around 700 shots , more than double if you use the LCD display. The optical viewfinder is a nice option in bright sunlight when the LCD display is hard to see or if you run low on juice without a spare . You can always review your shots on the LCD with the press of a button if you have the auto review set to off . To load your images , You can simply plug and play with Windows XP . Using Windows XP there is no need to download any of the Canon software ( Including ZoomBrowser EX ) if you have any basic Photo Editing programs . The supplied Canon package gives you just the basic photo editing functions and the Canon Movie Maker is pretty much the same as XP's Movie Maker 2 . After seeing what the Canon software did , I quickly uninstalled it and just went with what XP and my Photo Editing program had . You plug in the Camera turn it on and follow XP's Camera wizard . Same with the Movie files . The Video function is very nice and takes nice images . On best quality ( 640x380 ) 30 frames per sec , You can get up to 32 minutes on a 4 GB card . Only the digital zoom , not the optical works while in movie mode so whatever focal length you start out with it's pretty much set . The digital zoom just digitally magnifies the image so zoom quality will drop off . Not too bad considering the small size and convienience of the camera . With the RCA cable ends on the supplied adapter you can hook the camera up to your TV and view photos or Movies . If you have a DVD recorder you can record your movies direct to DVD , just remember to press the Display button to turn off the Time Display info overlay on your camera or it will record that too ! Another note , I had a tough time to get the Auto Focus Assist Beam to turn off . I wanted the little light that assists focus to stay off at all times . I turned the function off in the menu but it kept firing up . I discovered that in the Flash menu you have to turn off the Red-Eye Lamp option too . That keeps the light off permanantly .
      • 057 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Orange ) ( Electronics ) We live in Guam , where the picture taking possibilities are endless .
      • 059 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) After dropping my SD1100 in the ocean , I was a bit miffed to find the upgrade ( the SD1200 ) actually cheaper than the model I had wanted . !
      • 061 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) I was not pleased with this camera .
      • 064 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I own a Canon S30 , like it and still use it as a backup .
      • 066 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) I really like this camera . It takes nice great shots even in low light . I was using an old Kodak camera that used AA batteries and this camera is so much better ! I would recommend getting a spare battery . .
      • 068 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) I bought this camera as a replacement of an older Canon PowerShot SD800IS which I accidentally broke .
      • 070 4  My last camera didn't have a viewfinder , and the button with the directional controls was impossibly small . Even with one of those add-on shields , it was literally ' point and shoot ' , because I had nothing other than my own face to view before shooting . This one overcomes both of those challenges , so , this is great ! Now , I'll take pictures without all the frustrations that the above issues presented .
      • 071 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I've owned a few Canon powershot cameras over the years , and in general I have been very happy with them ( obviously if I keep buying them ) .
      • 073 4  I have this camera and I love it so far ! It's fun , portable and relatively easy to use ! Advantages : * Easy to use - The camera was very easy to set up . All I had to do was put the battery in and the memory card ( sold separately ) and it worked . It was also relatively easy to figure out , once I realized that tapping the camera focused it , instead of taking pictures . Automatic mode is very easy to figure out , and I've only gotten great pictures out of it ! * Size - The camera is very portable and will fit in most cases . It is about the size of a credit card . It is pretty light , which makes it feel fragile , but I haven't had any problems with it breaking so far . * Sharp , clear photos - The photos have been very clear in my opinion . When uploaded to the computer , they are large ( 3648 by 2736 pixels or 20.267 by 15.2 inches at 100% ) and when at their largest , can show things that are barely visible to the eye . I have found that compared to other cameras I have seen , this shows better detail . * Good videos - The videos were surprisingly good . They showed a nice image , and the volume was pretty clear , which surprised me . I was very impressed with the video quality . The only problem was they did detect some shaking of the hand , but I think a tripod would easily fix this problem . * ZoomBrowser Ex - This is the software that comes with the camera . It is simple and easy to use . It is not for editing photos , just uploading them , but it was easy to download , and it always does its job quickly and effectively . It also makes it easier to organize them . * Rechargeable battery - I really like the fact that the battery is rechargeable . It's nice to be able to know how long your battery will last , and it saves money on not having to buy replacement batteries . The battery needed to be charged within a few hours of getting the camera , but other than than , it's lasted about 5 days , with me having the camera on a few times a day . It charges in a little less than 2 hours . * Fast - The camera turns on quickly and takes pictures pretty quickly as well . It's good when you need to capture something happening right at that moment . Disadvantages * No memory card included - This wasn't a problem for me , as they told me there was nothing when I bought the camera , and I was planning on getting one anyway , but definately don't buy one without a card - you won't be able to take pictures . * Manual is vague - The manual is good about telling you how to set up and use the camera but nothing else really . It doesn't explain any features of the camera . For cases , I would recommend : Sleeve Case ( Magenta ) and Tripod for Canon PowerShot SD1200IS Digital Camera Light Gray It also comes with a tripod , and room for the cord . I think it's pretty good . Overall , I really like this camera . It is not for a professional photographer , but someone who enjoys taking photos as a hobby , or just wants photos of their family . It's a nice little camera , and I am very happy with it so far .

I previously owned a Casio that I loved so I figured I'd stay with the same brand . Little did I know the S5 did not even come close to my old Casio . Annoyed that I had to return it , I went to my local electronic stores to see what they recommended for me . Both stores I went to recommended this camera and said I would be disappointed in it . They explained to me in detail the difference between this camera and the S5 and why the S5 didn't take good pictures . I also remembered that I have a friend that had this camera , I played around with hers for a while and immediately knew that this was the camera for me . I ordered it and within two days it was at my door step . PROS : Clear Pictures Zoom feature works great , I was able to zoom really close to an object and still get a clear picture Video is good too , you are able to zoom while in video mode which is nice to have The camera is easy to use The color is awesome ( it is a red / pink color as stated , but it seems more of a hot pink , which I love ) The camera is built well , it seems sturdy . The price is good . CONS : ( If I had to come up with some , not really major and definitely not deal breakers ) You can always here the camera refocusing which can get a little annoying ( but its not a big deal at all because you always get a good picture ) The camera is not as slim as some cameras out there , but by no means is it extremely thick ( The S5 I ordered was a thin camera but it was very cheaply made , this camera is thicker but it feels like it is well built and will not break as easily , personally I'd rather have the camera that is thicker and well made vs . the thin cheaply made one .

I took my girlfriend to Best Buy so she could see the camera , and she immediately liked it . She wanted a small P & S camera which she could carry in her purse . And she wanted a rechargeable battery , and the eye viewfinder as well . And she wanted at least 10MP . After further consideration we agreed that the SD1200 fit the bill . I ordered it on thanksgiving day from Amazon ( great price $149 ) .

      • 085 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) I have been a loyal Canon customer for years but it has ended with the SD1200is .

I tried it , and I found the pictures are very good . My wife doesn't have the mechanical engineering knack like I do , but she figured out how to use it in a couple of minutes , so that tells me that everything is very intuitive . For the size , the camera feels heavy and solid , and it probably means that construction is good and sturdy . The flash is very good in the dark . My two boys , 3 and 7 , are very active , and the camera was having problem catching up with the action . Basically , the shutter takes a tick or two to respond to my click , but other than that , everything is good . It is very compact so it will fit in my jean pocket very comfortably . It also takes video , so that's a good thing .

This one has rechargable batteries , which our old one didn't have . I like still having a small viewfinder in addition to the larger window . The picture quality is quite good and it has a really nice face-finding focus that even has multiple face finders if you are taking a picture of a group .

They all turned out great ! ! Just make sure you get a high speed SD card so the time it takes to save each picture after you take it can be reduced . I love how small it is ! I was able to ride a bunch of rides at Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland and didn't have to worry about the camera at all !

      • 101 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) This is our second ( or third ? ) small digital camera .

I bought the Nikon about 2 years ago because of its smaller footprint than the Canon point and shoots . However over the last 2 years , I have been fairly disappointed with the picture quality . Therefore I was looking around and after reading the reviews , I bought the 1200IS . I have been using it for about 3 weeks now and am very impressed as are other reviewers with the quality of the pictures for the price point . This is a very basic camera but it is perfect for a compact point and shoot . I would say that 5 out of 10 pictures on my old Nikon came out well . So far , I would say 8 out of 10 pictures on this Canon come out well ! I would highly recommend this camera for anyone looking for a basic point and shoot that does not need some more of the advanced manual settings .

      • 108 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) I gave my neice an SD1100 last year and she is still raving about it . I decided to buy one for myself and , of course , they were discontinued . The SD1200 turned out to be a fantastic little camera . It takes great pictures and yet it fits easily into a pocket . It's the perfect camera for travel . I couldn't be happier with my purchase .
      • 110 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) This camera is an upgrade from an earlier version . I keep this camera in the bottom of my purse and take it out whenever the need arises . Takes great little videos and easily switches modes quickly while your pointing to shoot . A definite must for Moms on the go and people who don't usually take pictures because its so easy to use . The 8GB card is an essential addition . Honestly , you'll love it .
      • 113 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) The SD1200IS is an excellent camara .
      • 117 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) We got this camera for my daughter for Christmas after my fater-in-law raveda about his SD1000 .

This camera fills all those needs , plus it is small enough to slip in a pocket . Perfect . The price was reasonable , as well .

      • 124 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) I borrowed a Canon camera from a friend and even if it was only a 5MP one , i was impressed by its quality , esp . on daylight . That made me decide that for a point and shoot camera , Canon would be the authority . The only drawback is when not enough lighting is provided & some preselected settings , like the one with casio , though I would never trade it for the picture quality . But all in all , this is a perfect buy .

      • 130 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) My wife was wanting a nice small camera that she could keep in her purse .
      • 133 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Orange ) ( Electronics ) I've used the camera alot since I got it , and am very pleased .

My previous camera took horrible pictures , and had bad picture quality . I had just got back from a trip from Germany and did not have that many great pictures , and wanted a better one . This camera has great picture quality , is small and easy to carry around . The settings are easy to use and there are no mysteries where and how the camera is used .
      • 139 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) This is a nice camera .

Like the rest , we have become very pleased with the product . There is some tendency to cheapen the housing etc from one to the next . I think the USB access cover is going to break any day now . Quality is good . I really do not need the increased megapixels but this is the trend for the industry . The screen size is great . I like the new button to move from picture to picture . I am happy with the purchase . Wish they had not changed battery size as we lose the flexibity to share batteries and chargers .

      • 145 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) Since most of my pictures are quick snapshots of family members , I need an easy-to-use camera .

      • 154 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) When our Fuji digital camera quit , I started investigating cameras and was happy to discover this little Canon camera .

      • 158 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) The SD1200 is a great little camera . It takes great pictures and is extremely easy to use even for beginners . The camera also has more advanced features in the manual mode if you get into tweaking your settings for a certain situation . The only downside is that it DOES NOT come with color accent mode like the SD780 and a few previous models had . It's not a necessary function but it is a pretty neat feature . Otherwise it's a great little camera and you can't go wrong with a Canon .

      • 176 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) We love the camera itself , but were surprised that it did not come with a memory card , nor was this information included at the time of ordering .

Got it for an excellent price when Cannon was introducing there next new line of cameras . Bought it to replace a cannon SD 770IS that was stolen & I liked it . This model is just as good but I don't see any major improvements . I'm not big camera person so this model does fine & should be fine for the average user .
      • 186 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) My wife and I were strolling through the store when she spotted this camera and said that she wanted her own camera , since I hogged the family camera , and that this one was cute .
      • 188 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) I was looking for a small , 200 dollar price range , camera with as large an optical zoom range as possible .

The LCD display is great . However , as someone who is fairly new to didgital photography , I found the focusing step with the shutter takes some practice . That is certainly no fault of the camera . I'm happy with my purchase .

I can shoot away with this Canon and not be worried about running out of power . I like the large screen and I am very happy with this camera .

They are so user friendly and the pictures turn out so well . It is compact and easy to carry in my purse in a little case I bought so I never miss a Kodak moment . Or should I say Canon moment ! She is enjoying her camera as much as I am . No complaints here .
      • 206 4  I wasn't sure if this camera would have sharp enough pictures to make me happy . I am a long time serious photographer but wanted something very small and light for mountain biking , hiking and snow shoeing . My other cameras while great are just to big for my outdoor sports . Wow ! I have a 37 HD tv and the pictures look great on it ! Really sharp and great color . If you have an HD tv that has a USB input , throw away the tv cable that comes with the camera and use USB memory sticks to view pictures . Composite images from the cable will be blurry . The biggest surprise to me was how good the videos are from the camera . I thought would be like my other point and shoot camera that has video . The video would be small and blurry . NOT ! While I'm sure a true video camera is better , the video from the 1200 are plenty good enough to share with your friends through You Tube or email with out being ashamed of the quality . It shoot in AVI format . The only weirdness is finding all of the shot settings . I had to actually read the manual ( gasp ! ) to find out where the other camera settings were . I'm talking about the settings like underwater , etc . Once you know where they are it's easy to find . Macro pictures using the built in flash work great . We have a business website and a lot of our products are small . The quality is good enough that I'm going to use the 1200 sometimes instead of my digital SLR just to save wear and tear on the SLR . The screen is good enough to allow you to really line up the picture before you shoot . Fortunately I have a very short light duty tripod that is just great for this . I think you will love this camera if you use it as a fun point and shoot and don't expect it to replace a high quality digital SLR .
      • 208 4  This ia a great little camera that you can carry in your pocket . I was looking for a small camera without a wide angle lens to take pictures of family and friends at indoor and outdoor events . My wide angle camera incuded more scenery than I wanted and picture qualty suffered . This SD1200SI solved that problem . The SI feature is just what I needed to get better shots in all settings . I have been using it for about a month . I used it to take about 60 flash photos of a large indoor gathering . The flash refreshes very quickly and seemed to always be ready for the next picture . None of the pictures were blurred . Only complaint is that the flash coverage begins to weaken beyond about 10 feet , but I knew that when I bought it . I take all my pictures with the flash on , even outdoors so I never use Auto as the setting because I find that I get better results for indoor shots . The auto focus is very good and quick . I also like the fact that the LCD can be set to stay on longer for multiple shots of indoor activities . I also very much like the view finder . I have a wide angle camera that does not have a view finder and even when the LCD is set to its brightest level , it is difficult to frame a shot in outdoor sunlight . The view finder does rob some of the LCD area but the tradeoff is worth it to me . I also like the simplicity of its features . Picture review has its own button , which works great . All in all , this is a great little general purpose camera . I have no problem with the size of buttons . Everything about it seems to be designed correctly for the non-professional who just wants to take basic snapshots , indoors and outdoors . I have not used the video so I cannot comment on it . I considered the SD780 but was not interested in HD video or the higher resolution for a much higher price . The price offered by Amazon for the SD1200 was the best deal on the Internet .
      • 209 4  We bought this camera to replace our aging 5 mp camera . My picture taking ability is amateur . This camera makes me look like I know what I am doing . If is simple point-and-shoot you want , this camera is for you . If its more professional looking images you want , this camera is for you too . One switch changes the automatic , manual and video mode . One definate plus - Once the manual settings are done the camera will remember them . Even if the camera is turned off and on . This is helpful if there are two different people taking pictures during the day ( I like the manual mode , my wife prefers the automatic ) . It has general settings like portrait , night snapshot , kids and pets , etc . But is also has specific settings like ISO , AWB , My colors ( vivid , sepia etc . ) and continus shot . Can be mounted on a tripod . The screen size is adequate and can be adjusted for brightness . The display button will show the on screen display , display off , or just the subject . The included CD is the manual and software ( sorry no book ) . There is a small getting started booklet included . The software lets the user edit pictures before they are uploaded or after . Also included are the USB cable and video cable . I have not taken the time to fully evaluate the software but so far I am pleased . To give you perspective on how much memory you will need , we bought a 4 gigabyte card as well . On the highest resolution , this card can store over 1,400 pictures. The camera has no memory of its own . The size is a little smaller than I am used to . It is about the size of a credit card and a little thicker than a half an inch . One small con is to charge the battery , it must be taken out and snapped into the included wall charger . There is a charge complete light that lights when it is fully charged . From completely dead to full charge takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes . Battery life seems great but we have only taken about 25 pictures so far .

      • 216 4  Perfect for point and shoot , also pretty successful if one wants to go farther . Have used most of the settings for different types of pictures . . . trying to make a point and shoot work like a manual . Can use long shutter speed , and trick camera into quick shutter speed by using ISO3200 setting . Picture quality excellent for most lighting situations ( obviously good at low light , only if using tripod or other stablizing mechanism . ) Only drawback seems to be that it does have a hard time balancing a bright sky with a dark foreground , however , focusing on something in the middle while continuing to hold button halfway , and then snapping picture helps to balance shot a little better . Would like more control over fast shutter speed ( ' kids and pets ' setting doesn't seem to really work ) however , for 2 bills , can't complain at all ! Great buy ! Great battery life !
      • 217 4  Purchased this camera to replace an older Nikon . Things that I like about this camera . . . It is small , but still has a view finder and fits in the hand . Zoom quality is great for a camera this size . The 10 MP does a great job with detail and good color quality . Would recommend .
      • 223 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) I bought a powershot A80 a few years ago when 4 megapixels seemed like enough . that my old powershot still takes good pictures led me to this one . my wife needed a small camera to take on business trips . well , for a reasonable price we get 10 megapixels , an easy to use automatic mode , and a big screen on the back to view pictures before savings . unless you have special picture taking needs ( and you know who you are ) the few dollars that you will spend on this compared to the lowest priced ones get you the perfect travel companion . it even has video !
      • 225 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) I don't often write reviews on many purchases but this camera deserves the praise !
      • 227 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) This is one great little camera.I carry a small sub compact camera with me everywhere I go and I needed an up-grade from my 6 year old fixed focus Argus .
      • 229 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Dark Gray ) ( Electronics ) I spent a week debating which camera to buy . Finally , I was torn between the Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP and this camera , which has a smaller MP number and is more expensive . Logic would say to buy the one that is $129 with the higher MP . In the end I chose this one because its smaller and less-bulky . I tested both in-store and found this model to be more adequate to what I wanted . Basically , I wanted to take your everyday pictures but also needed a camera that can take good close-ups for selling some items on ebay and whatnot . This camera does exactly that and a 10MP vs . a 12 MP is not that big a difference . This camera did exactly everything I wanted and exceeded my expectations . I've read some reviews on here where people complain about the noise it makes when focusing . I am not sure if these people have lives who would let such a minor thing deter them from buying a camera . It is louder than other cameras I've owned , but its not annoying by any means . In my mind this is a perfect camera . I am pleased and will probably have it for years unless the kids want to see how it looks in the toilet .
      • 231 4  Overall this camera takes excellent pictures . I mostly use the Auto mode , which works fine . I took night time pics of a downtown city and Christmas lights . The pictures were beautiful . The macro feature also works great for close up photos . I took two night pics of the big red V sign at the Varsity in Atlanta . One with this Canon , one with a Sony DSC-H20 . Neither camera was totally accurate with color , since they both took it slightly more orange than it was in real life . But the Canon photo ( when zoomed at 100% in Photoshop ) took a sharper image . The letters , twigs and leaves were all sharper , and some leaves in the upper corner were brighter . The Sony was fuzzier , the letters were blurrier and more hazy . The leaves in the corner were also darker . But the Sony was slightly more accurate with color . One quirk : A few times in Auto mode , this Canon camera tried to use the Macro feature for something that was not close up , so I had to switch to P mode . But that doesn't happen often . The biggest annoyance I have had so far is that the new class 4 high speed memory card I bought is not readable in the older card reader in my computer . So I have to hook up the camera with the USB cable . And a couple of times , this has locked up my PC , and it wants to default to using the Microsoft camera and scanner wizard to download the photos . I have not installed the Canon software , so that might be the problem . But I never installed any of the software that came with my Sony cameras , either , and I never had that type of problem with them . Sometimes I am able to hook the camera up with no problem , and just click its drive in My Computer to open the photos , but sometimes it doesn't work well . So I don't know if this is a Canon issue . My computer has been upgraded with a new hard drive and more RAM , so I don't think it's the PC . The camera takes good quality video clips as well . They record in AVI format , which opens right up in Windows Media Player . But I had a problem last night with a 7 minute video clip that had errors after it was pulled onto my desktop . WMP would not read it , and it showed up as 0 bytes in file size . I don't know why , since it played just fine on the camera . So I had to open up the Microsoft Camera Wizard & use it to copy just that one video file . It worked better that time . I am using a Lexar memory card , class 4 , SDHC . Maybe I need to use another brand of memory ? if anybody has ideas , let me know . I thought that somewhere I read Canon recommends SanDisk . One thing to know : If you want to use zoom in video mode , do not zoom in and THEN start recording , because it will lock the zoom in and you can't move it in or out . Zoom out first , start recording , THEN use the zoom . Also the puny 3X zoom does not help much in video mode . The zoom works to take better quality still photos , than what it does in video mode . The camera starts up really fast and is easy to use . I wish the zoom was bigger . The battery door hinge is kind of flimsy . I also wish these little compact cameras were bigger or had bigger grips on the side . They need to put the back buttons on the left side , instead of the right , since most people are right handed . If you need to grip the camera with one hand , you always worry about accidentally pressing a function button while taking a photo . It would be nice if the flash was closer to the middle , and the little speaker on the back was closer to the middle . They are both in spots where somebody could accidentally put their finger over them , if they weren't paying attention . I wish the silver ring around the lens was frosted metal , because the shiny metal shows lots of fingerprints . But those are really minor flaws . Overall I am very pleased with this camera .
