Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Silver)

  • - Slim and portable . - Fairly easy to use . Easy program menu to navigate . - Big view screen and a separate view finder . - Plenty of zoom capability . - Capable of taking great pictures . - The zoom function is available while shooting video . The bad : - Really pixelated view screen . It was very difficult to tell whether I had taken a good shot or not by looking at the picture on the camera's view screen . Half the pictures I had taken of my kids were not good . Had I been able to tell that while looking at the screen , I would have simply taken more shots . It's a terrible view screen . - Poor battery life . I put in brand new duracell batteries and got about 25 shots out of them . This is atrocious for a camera this small . My guess is that the flash is a serious power hog and it is a very bright flash . I recommend rechargeable batteries . Don't bother with regular batteries . - Huge lag times between pictures . This is never a good thing no matter what you are shooting . For most of you reading this , this camera will be just fine and you won't have any problems with how the pictures turn out . I was able to take a few fantastic photos . For those of you who are a little more sensitive to the quality of your pictures , I recommend going up to a higher class of camera or paying a view extra dollars to get higher model Canon .
    • 016 4  I had the Canon A530 and just wanted a larger screen and I thought the pink was just a cute , girly color . I had been very happy with the A530 . My mom now inherits my A530 . This camera has the same features but is just a less bulky , slimmer camera than the A530 . One of the cons is that when taking a picture you have to hold the button down half way down wait for it to focus and then take the picture . So you just cant take quick picture . Being not into picture taking a lot it works for me ! Any seasoned camera person probably would not like this camera . But I love it . I have never had issues with Canon . I have Canon office equipment as well and have been very satisfied with their performance . I will be using it a lot on my trips .
    • 023 4  I bought the pink version of this camera for my daughter who is going into middle school . While being a good size , and having the features I wanted , I was shocked at the poor image quality . I compared pics it took against the family camera , a two-year old Canon 950is . They both have the same 12.1MP resolution , and most of the features are the same . However , when it came to image quality , there was NO comparison . Colors on the 1100is were flat , and details were grainy and pixellated . This was noticeable in outdoor shots , but especially with shots taken indoors . I felt that any shots printed out larger than 4x6 would be horrible . The 950is is definitely a more expensive camera , but I guess the old adage you get what you pay for is true . I returned the camera to Amazon for a full refund . My daughter is getting the 950is , and we're shopping for a replacement family camera .
    • 032 4  My first digital camera was an Olympus Camedia with a 10X optical zoom . It was a great camera , but it was nearly impossible to carry around in case I wanted to get a shot of something or other . That's simply not a problem with the Canon A1100IS . It'll fit just about anywhere you might carry a wallet . Additionally , the construction is robust enough that I don't think you have to worry about crushing it unless you sit directly on it . Ease of use is completely fine . Some of the icons on the various buttons take a little getting used to , but that's really not a problem . Maybe most important for people like me with very large hands and fingers , the camera is still quite easy to operate . As far as picture quality goes , it's more than fine . Granted , I use enhancement software , ' cause I like to push color saturation or contrast or whatever , but the images are just fine without fiddling - particularly in terms of sharpness and clarity . Overall , if you're looking for an affordable all around camera that you can take with you and leave the camera bag behind , this is an extremely good choice .
    • 041 4  I have a professional digital camera , but needed something that I could keep in the diaper bag and pull out whenever the children do something cute . Also , I was taking a trip to Boston and did not want to lug the big camera . The pictures are good and I like that it takes short videos too . My one complaint is the battery life . I had to carry around extra batteries with me in Boston and had to change them at least once a day . Of course I was using the camera a good bit . I will be looking for rechargeable batteries and hopefully that will keep battery cost down some .
    • 075 4  I bought this camera based on the reviews it had . Between amazon and cnet , we thought we were getting a good deal . The price was right but we are returning the camera . The good : - Slim and portable . • 104 4  I purchased the Canon PowerShot A1100S through Amazon to replace a 2 year old 8 meg Nikon based on the positive review by consumer Reports . The features and picture quality were no better than the 2 year old Nikon and the flash recovery was noticeably slower . After 90 days the camera stopped working so I sent it to Canon under Warranty . After a week I received an email stating that they were not going to honor the warranty due to moisture being found in the camera , I was shocked . This camera had been kept in a case when not being used and had not been exposed to water other than a humid environment of the tropics . My old Nikon has sent in excess of 90 days over the last 2 years going in and out of extremely humid environments , Cambodia , the Australian rain forest , Kauai , coastal BC without an issue . This Canon is so poorly built that stopped working after a few days . I figure I must have received a bad camera , which is why I sent it back but apparently their customer service department must see this issue frequently enough to claim it was mishandled to avoid taking responsibility for the poor quality .
    • 138 4  light weight and very cute looking . . . . . . great quality photos . . . . . however , the battery and memory card cover is very flimsy and feels like it could break with very little force . My older canon's cover worked better and felt more heavy duty .
    • 140 4  I was hoping to find a simple to use point and shoot camera for myself , and this is it . My husband has his SLR camera to keep him happy with a whole list of features . For myself , I just wanted a camera that I can put in my pocket or handbag to take quick on the spot pictures of grandkids . I really don't think I need to use anything but the auto mode . I've only had it for a week , but I love it already after playing with it . I just turn it on and let the camera decide which is best for me to take that picture of my grandaughter playing her violin . The price on Amazon was great . I saw it advertised in a Best Buy store for the same price , but I decided to go with Amazon with free shipping and no sales tax . The shipping was very fast even in our NJ snowy weather . So - if you're looking for a easy to use camera for a youngster or a senior citizen like me , then this Canon AS1100 is for you . Like I said , all I want to do is point and shoot .
    • 207 4  There is no beating a Canon camera . I bought a crappy GE a few years ago and not for much less . My new Powershot has taught me how silly that idea was . Love my new camera . It feels solid but light and takes fantastic pictures .
    • 232 4  I wanted a camera that I could just drop in my purse and go for those Oh , I wish I had my camera moments . This camera was an ideal answer . Picture quality is very , very good , and even though I have not used all the features ( and there are many ) on the camera , I'm sure that the rest will be up to par . My suggestion would be to take the time to read the manual ( provided on disc ) to learn all that your camera can do . But if you're like me and want to hurry up and point and shoot , this camera works like a dream !

  • 001 4  I purchased this camera just before a 19 - day trip to the East Coast and gave it quite a workout . . . nearly 2800 pictures taken during the trip , and only about 5 of them were unclear due to my unsteady hand . The rest were great , even zoomed out to a ridiculously large size on my computer , with crisp lines and faces , and vivid colors , far exceeding any 35 mm or digital camera I have used in the past . The camera itself and the software included with it are incredibly intuitive . Though there are many manual settings possible , I set the camera in Auto mode and just clicked away . Many places I took pictures required me to turn off the flash , but even those were very clear and bright , and I had to do nothing but aim and shoot . The delay time between pictures was negligible , and the rechargeable AA batteries I used were good for around 200 pictures a charge , even using flash and with frequent zooming in and out . I used a 16 GB SDHC chip and had the capacity to take 5,000 pictures ! I'm still working on filling the first chip ! ! The provided software is also very simple to use . . . as easy as plugging in the provided USB cable , and turning the camera on . All pictures are quickly and automatically saved in folders by date regardless of how many times in a day you download them , and renaming or tagging pictures is a breeze . I have not even begun making full use of the picture touch-up features , but the software includes a fun and easy slideshow application that makes sharing pictures via desktop or projector a snap . Overall , I could not be happier that I purchased this camera ! I look forward to mastering all its features , but as a user-friendly , versatile , and inexpensive point-and-click camera , it blew away all my expectations . It does all that Canon says it does and makes taking pictures fun and easy , right out of the box !
    • 011 4  I like the picture quality , which is excellent for this point and shoot class camera . The first test of this camera was taking pictures of flowers ( delia ) at the Golden Gate Park in San Fancisco , including a sunny day and a cloudy day . For both days , almost all pictures are in focus . Flowers , leaves , and , yes , even honey bees all look so lively , sharp , and excellent color reproduction . I would highly recomment this camera to anyone who is looking for one in the point and shoot class .
    • 017 4  I bought this camera in August and used it to take photos of my son's wedding . After only 3 months , while taking photos of my grandchildren , I received a lens error message and the camera would not work . I sent it in under warranty ( with all of the receipts and paperwork ) and I was told that it would cost me $110.00 to repair as they found dust in it . If normal use could cause it to get dust inside and stop working then this is not a camera I would recommend . And if Canon will not back up their warranty after only 3 months then I will not be purchasing another Canon camera . I am very disappointed in this company's customer service and product .
    • 113 4  This camera was a replacement for my 11 year old Cannon S40 . The picture quality was not so good in low light when in auto mode but if you switch it to low light mode the pictures are decent . Over I'm happy with the camera but I do feel the auto mode is lacking since my 11 year old Cannon S40 just worked without thought when in auto mode . The a1100is is a good camera overall but did take some tweaking of the settings to get the pictures to come out perfect . I recommend turning off the auto object focus and set it to center and I've noticed a huge improvement in all the photos . I feel this camera was a great deal for the price and would recommend it if you are willing to spend a little time to learn how to use the settings to get the best pictures
    • 115 4  I've gotten great high quality pictures of my 2 year old daughter , inside , outside , every expression with the burst which takes many pictures in a row . Batteries have been running out quickly , I've heard you should use expensive high quality batteries , the generic ones just don't cut it for camera use . So glad I bought this ! And it really is the best deal on the market .
    • 147 4  I bought this camera after a miserable week with a high-end Canon ( SD980is ) that wouldn't take a good picture no matter what I tried . This A1100 is a pleasure . The pictures are beautiful . Adjustments are intuitive , it seems to be fairly foolproof . This camera is well-built and sized right to hold in your hand . Has the right amount of features for the non-professional but high-expectation photographer . Very pleased !
    • 159 4  We bought this after our last child was born for the built in stabilizer . it worked okay . After less than a year it started sucking the life out of our rechargeable batteries . We bought new batteries , ( not cheap ) , and a new battery charger ( not cheap either ) . Oh , and a new internal battery ( $4 ) . Obviously , those weren't the issue . So , after maybe 500 pictures and less than a year the thing is dead . Very disappointed since I have always bought this brand . Not anymore .
    • 257 4  This Canon camera is a perfect addition to the amateur photographers line-up . . . . portable but not too small where you can't push a button without contacting another one . The image quality is astounding for the size of the camera . The only thing that could be improved upon is the automatic zoom feature . . . it's nearly impossible to turn off ( or at least I haven't figured out how ) . It would be nice to be able to choose your own subject from the field of view , auto focus on it , and then adjust the camera without losing your object of focus in the final photograph , but I don't think that's possible , even when you turn the auto focus off . Uff Da . Any suggestions ? All in all , it's a great camera for the price .

  • 008 4  I have had Kodak digital cameras the last few I have had , but after the last one got damp in a bag of at the beach , I needed a new one . I wanted the same kind of memory as I had in the Kodaks and a low price . I also wanted a camera that took regular or rechargeable batteries . Some of the other batteries are just too expensive . I also really wanted an optical view finder in addition to the display screen . Not many cameras provide this any more unless you go high end . I would have gone with Kodak again if they had one with an optical view finder , then I wouldn't have had to learn new upload software . The main selling point for me was that the Canon had an optical view finder . I have been happy with this camera , it only cost $130 on amazon.com . It is not that different than the kodaks I have had and easy to use . It has alot of features I probably won't use , I am basically a point and shoot photographer . But , I do find myself using the video which I rarely did with my old camera .
    • 039 4  I needed a second camera take I could carry in my pocket if I wanted . I take alot of family pictures , especially of my grandchildren . Great for this . I also have taken alot of nature pictures with it . The zoom is good , you do lose some quality when zoomed all the way . I have taken over 500 pictures and I am pleased so far . I have taken some great widescreen shots . Overall I am pleased .
    • 084 4  I wanted a little pocket camera , used to have a powershot S70 which was great but wanted a bigger screen and higher iso so I bought this and the picture quality is a little grainy . And having it on auto it doesn't always fire flash and return makes pictures blurry ! But I love the color . I guess I'm used to my D40 but my powershot had pretty good picture quality !
    • 089 4  It takes real nice pictures but battery life is not too good unless you turn of the view screen most of the time . Also , the battery / card door hinge feels rather flimsy and we hope that will hold up . I have a 3 - 4 year older Canon ( precursor model ) and the door feels much stronger . However , that older one has had some battery-door contact problems that we've needed to adjust from time to time . This new camera feels like a tighter contact so hopefully that will not be a problem . It's not the most user friendly for someone not accustomed to digital cameras , but he's been keeping it on auto and gets very nice , clear , true color pictures that way . It's also a little smaller and flatter than my older one which increases its portability but for me , who has used both , it's harder to hold onto . Overall good camera and if the door hinge holds up down the road , I bet we'd praise it higher than that .
    • 142 4  I have a PowerShot A520 and wanted to upgrade . Needless to say , I sent this camera back and went back to using my old camera . This camera left half of my pictures blury and grainy . I am used to using a Powershot and was really surprised when I saw how this one took pictures . The pictures were terrible . I took some more with my old camera and had them printed at the same time and the same place to make sure and it was this camera that did so poor . Do not recommend .
    • 149 4  The indoor picture quality is about the worst I have seen . If indoor pictures are important to you , do not buy this camera . Also the battery life is unacceptable . The camera comes loaded with selling points which make it sound great , but all that goes to waste once you see the end result of the actual ( indoor ) photos taken .
    • 173 4  I was able to use the camera easily with minimal practice including the zoom . The menus are easy to find and easy to understand . It weighs next to nothing but seems really sturdy . I've never felt confident about photography , but with this camera I'm looking forward to learning the more advanced features
    • 183 4  This camera is easy to use and produces pretty good pictures . I also own a similar camera from Samsung that sucks batteries and produces pictures that are almost as good . For a camera that sells for less than $200 , it does its job wel .
    • 193 4  I wasn't expecting much for $150.00 . I was pleasantly surprised when I started using the camera . It has more features then I'll ever use , but it's nice to know that they're available . The pictures I've taken , both indoor and outdoor , were very good . The video really surprised me and my family . I didn't buy it for the video , but it's so good , I bought a bigger memory card . I highly recommend it in this price range .
    • 229 4  As good as twice the price . . Crystal clear . . . . . . I took a pic of an old black and white photo taken in 1930 and it came out better than the original . Even makes a 66 year old man ( me ) look good . I recommend even for professional use .
    • 241 4  This camera takes awesome pictures , the zoom is great , and for the money is an excellent product . The one thing to be careful of is not to use it in extreeme cold . The inner lens gets foggy . It is fine once it warms back up . Great product though , unless you are ice fishing . : )
    • 245 4  I bought this camera as a gift for my wife . Her last camera had a little accident with the chair and ' died ' . I chose this camera becuase of its size and color ( she loves green ) . I have a larger Canon Powershot and I love it , but this camera comes in very handy for those quick shots around the house of our cats or our little nephew . It also comes in very handy when out on the town with the nephew and a smaller , more descrete camera is necessary so we don't look like the press . I recommend this little ' giant ' to everyone .

  • 035 4  Our Canon 780IS met an unfortunate demise ( dropped ) and had to be replaced . I didn't want to spend a lot because I was also thinking about getting an SLR , so I decided to go with a low end Canon point and shoot to cover the gap before I jumped into SLR territory . I got the A1100IS because it was at the top of the line of Canon's low end cameras and I have had very good experience with Canon products . Build quality seemed OK , but you can tell there is more plastic in this camera than in the Elph models I've owned . I liked that the camera has a bulge grip as it is less likely to be dropped . Form factor it is a little bit bigger than the Elph series , but that is to be expected . I'm only giving it two stars because of the picture quality . The camera did not focus well , or quickly for me . Trying to snap pictures of our two small boys was very difficult . The autofocus would lock onto other objects in the frame and the subjects would be blurry . This was not obvious looking at the picture on the LCD screen , but once the picture got into the PC for viewing we were very disappointed about missing some shots . My wife took pictures at the school's halloween parade , so mind you these are fairly slow moving kids in costumes , and only about half of them turned out to be in focus . I then took my son outside for an experiment . I asked him to walk slowly at a diagonal into the camera's view and snapped several pictures using Easy , Automatic and Kids & Pets settings . Nearly all of them came out blurry . The camera simply could not detect him in the picture and instead chose to focus on other , stationary objects . I was actively trying to get that little green ' focus ' box on him , but it just wouldn't cooperate . I sent it back to Amazon ( first time I think I've used their return policy ) and ordered a Canon SD1200IS for just a few extra bucks . After some limited use appears to do a much better job , similiar to my older , deceased Canon . Also , I just ordered the Canon T1i through Amazon . They've got a fantastic price which includes a Canon MFR rebate on an additional telephoto lens that is good through Nov 21st .
    • 025 4  The A1100IS I had was just OK . My main concern is the quality of the pictures not all the whizbang features . The camera is very easy to operate and the size makes it an every day carrier in my pants pocket . The on response was good and the shutter lag was acceptable . Lots of shooting modes ( which most people will never understand much less use ) . My two main complaints : 1 . The very soft pictures . My old A560 shoots beautifully sharp images in just about any situation . The 1100 just doesn't produce the quality shot I'm used to . I have a high end Canon digital SLR and the 560 ' s shots approach the quality of it's big brother . The 1100 falls way short of the kind of quality I'm used to . 2 . The camera needs to be held at an angle away from my face to be able to review the shots taken . When viewed straight on the images are very blurry and dim . I'm no technical expert so my review is amateurish and far from complete . As I said earlier my main concern is the quality of the image and the 1100 falls short . I returned the camera to Amazon for a refund and will try to locate another 560 to buy . By the way , unless there is a gross difference in price on any item you wish to purchase , Amazon is the place to buy . Their return policy and procedure are unbeatable and fast . They even paid the cost of shipping the camera back to them . I couldn't be happier with a retailer and have spent a lot of money with Amazon this year for Christmas . Their website is one of the best on the net too . THANKS AMAZON !
    • 027 4  Though the overall quality of this point and shoot camera seems good , there are a couple of issues I have with it . I have found that the quality of the photos taken with a flash under florescent lights in my garage is lacking a bit . Trying to open the camera to put batteries and / or a card in it is not easy at all . The image stablizer is not what I thought it would be either , and some movement is detected in the photos when it is used by those not familiar with the cameras operation , such as kids . All this being said , if a person wants a good quality and relatively cheap point and shoot camera , they won't go wrong with the A1100IS . Don Martin
    • 057 4  Like a few other people I have more expensive cameras and agree that sometimes you want QUICK & EASY and this camera gives you that . This A1100is is definitely an improvement over the camera we replaced ( samsung 630 ) . When looking for a replacement the NO .1 feature was a FASTER reaction time to take those pictures ( MAKES IT EASIER TO GET THOSE PICTURES OF THE GRANDKIDS ) . Its not as fast as a SLR but it cost is 25% of the SLR's and in my opinion the SPEED TO PRICE is GOOD . I am also impressed with the MOVIE function . I recently bought a HD FLIP camera for my daughter and the A1100is video blows the FLIP away in picture quality and zoom ( MAKE SURE YOU GET 4GIG OR 8GIG CARDS IF YOUR GOING TO DO VIDEO ) OVER ALL I REALLY LIKE THIS CAMERA ! ESPECIALLY FOR $129.00 , HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG ? , The only reason I don't give it 5 STARS is the picture gets grainy fast the higher you go past the 4x zoom . IN SUMMARY : LOVE THE CAMERA , MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS USE THE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES 2200mh ( 2450 - 2500mh is better ) . I LIKE THE ENERGIZER 15min CHARGER . I THINK THIS WILL SOLVE MOST OF YOUR POWER AND TIMING PROBLEMS . ENJOY JAK P.S . This camera does have a continuous mode plus alot of other setting to satisfy an amature photographer , you just have to read the manual .
    • 102 4  It has a lot of features , but battery life is short . My old Canon had 4 aa batteries , this one only has two . So . . . you only get maybe half the pictures before you need new batteries . I use Alkalines , I was not happy with the rechargeables I used withmy old camera . They would not hold a charge very long . Over all a very good camera with limitations . Steve
    • 126 4  I have used regular SLR camera's and the cheap SLR type camera's all my life . I still have a Cannon AE1 with all the goodies . I don't know if I'll ever take it out again . This as i said is my first digital and it's so easy to use . I borrowed a different digital from my son and I had to reset everything every time I took the batteries out that never lasted . This is a snap , put it on auto , adjust the distance hold it still and shoot . That was exactly what I wanted . I can pull out the chip , plug it into my PC or reader and easily delete and save pics . Buy it , I hope you get a good one like mine . One day I'll read the manual and take even better pics . I like to by stuff like a radio , turn it on and it just works .
    • 167 4  All the indoor pictures I have taken so far did not turn out good . The auto white balance is not good , pictures are soft and grainy even with flash . Currently use Canon A610 and Canon XS SLR , ofcourse I am not comparing to my SLR , but I thought I will get quality to close to my A610 which is 4years old camera . Unfortunately it is nowhere near the quality of A610 . Even at low ISO settings it has lot of noise in photos . Autofocus is surprisingly slow for recent camera , and flash re-charge cycle is even slower . I do not see a point in paying premium for Canon brand specifically this camera .
    • 225 4  I have had 4 Canon camera's . . . they have all been a good buy . My wife had a Sony small camera . . . and didn't like it . . . was hard to use . . . . I talked her into this camera . . . and she loves it . . Simple , clean , small Just the camera she needs .

  • 058 4  I needed a camera to take extreme close ups on the nail art / designs I do for my portfolio . This camera will show the individual fibers on a cotton shirt . . I think this is the best camera for MY needs . Great colors and you can zoom while taking videos . It is great ! !

    • 069 4  We just took this camera on an extended trip abroad and were totally delighted with it . It made our old camera that we took along for backup look mediocre . Image stabilization is very good , exposure in low lighting was impressive , and automatic settings worked well to give us impressive photos . The only surprise was that there's no selection for image quality to control the size of the files .
      • 053 4  we initially liked the camera and pictures . Unfortunately , after only 45 days , the camera refused to turn on . It is out for warranty repair and we will see how it works when we get it back .

    • 098 4  This camera is a worthy successor to the Consumer Reports top-rated Canon A1000IS which I favorably reviewed last year after buying one for my stepson just prior to his trip to Kenya but tested extensively myself ahead-of-time . He brought back hundreds of stunning photographs . This year I bought this newer model for my wife , but also tested it before giving it to her . She is delighted with the small size , light weight , ease of use and great photos . All of the desirable features of this camera's predecessor were retained and refined , including an optical viewfinder that is missing on most other compact point-and-shoot cameras today . Not only does constantly using the camera's LCD screen eat battery power unnecessarily , holding a camera at arm's length to see the screen can introduce unnecessary shake and blurred photos . In bright sunlight LCD screens are nearly impossible to see . However , the screen is necessary to properly frame extreme close-up shots , some of which I have uploaded to this camera's gallery . Although this camera can use off-the-shelf AA alkaline cells , the smarter option is to use high-capacity rechargeable NiMH batteries that can deliver longer life , shorter recycle times and pay for themselves quickly since they're reused and not discarded . I recommend a rapid charger that can be used with both a 12 - volt car socket or can be plugged into an AC outlet . Amazon sells the Lenmar 2 - Hour AA / AAA NiMH Charger Kit that will do that . That way you can always have freshly-charged batteries at your disposal even if you're giving the camera heavy use . I normally use a single-lens-reflex digital camera , but I can favorably compare the images from this camera with those of my much heavier and bulkier SLR . There is considerable merit to having a lightweight , compact camera that is easy to use and carry . This camera meets those requirements nicely even though it doesn't offer the manual adjustments , low-light performance and zoom range of larger , heavier and much more expensive cameras . Built-in face-recognition technology and image stabilization in this camera have made it much more difficult to take bad people photos , even when there is strong back-lighting or other conditions that could normally sabotage your pictures . I found the camera's automatic contrast management a real plus when taking photos in bright lighting conditions . Although the SD memory card that comes with this camera is bigger than the one that was included with the A1000IS , most people will want to spring for a card with at least 4GB of capacity . This camera will accept SDHC cards up to 8GB . You should invest in one if you plan to shoot videos as well as still photos with this camera . In summary , this camera offers considerable value . It's compact , lightweight and simple to use yet , with some care composing your shots , takes high-quality photographs which you can proudly display and favorably compare with the best .
      • 004 4  I recently decided to upgrade from my Powershot A540 to the A1100IS . What I got was a nice , easy to use camera with many improvements from the earlier model . I find the picture quality to be very good . While other reviews indicate that it performs poorly in low-light conditions , thus far I haven't had that problem . All of the pictures that I have taken to date have been clear and crisp . There are times when the video viewfinder may appear grainy in low light when attempting to take a picture , however the pictures actually taken are not grainy at all . It is very user friendly , and the motion detection , face recognition , and image stabilization add vast improvements over earlier models . It is small and slim even though it takes AA batteries . If you're looking for a nice , small , easy to use and very sturdy camera , I would highly reccommend this one .
      • 005 4  Bought one of these about a month ago and have taken it on two trips and shot maybe 350 pictures with it so far . I'm quite pleased , the pictures are great . The ASA 1600 setting in Program mode allows quite decent shots indoors with no flash , which in museums and many other locations is essential . I bought it mainly because of good experiences with older Powershot models , and because I insist on being able to get batteries anywhere although I use rechargeable NIMH AAs normally . The NIMHs last a really long time . The image stabilization really helped with shots of static subjects with the camera zoomed way in . The viewfinder is extremely helpful outdoors in the sun . Finally , the camera is small enough to easily fit into a pocket .
      • 006 4  I had a Canon Powershot that I had had for the past 6 years , and much to my dismay , it finally died . It was a great little camera and I was worried about how the newer ones would perform in comparison . After extensive research on CNET and other sites , I finally decided on the A1100IS , and I have not been disappointed at all ! It takes great photos , especially on manual mode and it is easy to use and nice and compact . I like that it takes only 2 AA batteries , because it makes it so much lighter and more portable than my old one . In short - a great camera , for the price .
      • 052 4  The A1100is is a replacement for my wife's broken Pentax M20 which was perfect for her . The canon is even better . With so many auto settings and face detection it's hard to take a bad picture . It's also a better movie camera . Better exposures and speed . She will probably never use anything but the auto setting but even in that it will find the best automatic settings . The camera was very affordable and uses AA size batteries which is extrememy important as we travel a lot and it isn't always convienent to find a place to plug in a charger . It runs well on alkyline batteries if needed . The big plus for my wife is that it comes in serveral colors most importantly pink .
      • 071 4  This replaced an older Canon PowerShot . I purchased it despite bad reviews about picture sharpness . As I guessed , the problem was caused by the photographer's not pressing the button half way to focus and then all the way to shoot the picture . The extended zoom photos are much sharper than those taken by my previous camera . The image stabilizer is an additional help when zooming out . This is one of the few digital camera which still has an optical view finder , which is important when taking photos in the bright sunlight when you cannot see the picture on the LCD screen . Also , it is about half the size of the older model and cost half as much . It uses AA batteries , not expensive batteries that fit only the one camera .
      • 082 4  after 3 generations of kodaks , my last one being the kodak z885 was a real lemon . after 3 years of suffering with the z885 quirky problems , i've replaced it with the canon a1100is . i was considering another kodak , a canon , and a panasonic . after my last kodak , i decided that it would stay my last kodak . and the panasonic just did not get enough good reviews , too many the picture quality is a little this and that . fianlly that left the canon which i kept coming back to . the positive reviews out weigh the negatives by a landslide . a lot of , always a great picture . another thing i like is when the professional says , when i don't want to lug my dslr around , this is the camera i carry with me . also the performance was noted as being acceptable to good , not great but there's where you're paying the $300 for a camera , not $129 as with the canon a1100 . so i bought the camera from amazon and you know what , the reviews were accurate . i get great picutures with decent performance . at $129 , this is a pretty darn good camera . i considered the new generation canon a3100is and a3000is but those cameras were more expensive , they didn't have an optical view finder , and they didn't use AA batteries ( which i considered a real convienence ) . also the newer models used the digic 3 processor while the a1100is used the digic 4 processor - someone explain that one to me ? ! so if you are considering and want to get a nice inexpensive camera , get the canon a1100is and get it soon because i'm pretty sure they're on the way out now
      • 091 4  We have a Canon 8MP Powershot camera and were very happy with it . With the Amazon price and free delivery under Prime , we decided to upgrade to the 12MP A1100IS . Yes , I know that going from 8 to 12 is marginally better since we do not plan to print 11x17 poster size pictures . But , we upgraded for the following reasons : 1 . The reviews were excellent from both amateurs and professionals both here and on other sites . 2 . The AA battery is more convenient than carrying the older proprietary battery and charger from the 8MP model . Since you need to bring AA or AAA batteries along when you travel , this is not an added item but rather replaces the older battery and wall charger . This is expecially helpful when traveling abroad or for extended camping , hiking , or bike trips when you can change the AAs but not necessarily recharge via the wall charger . 3 . The controls are more intuitive for my wife . With the 8MP , it was easy to set the camera in the video mode after previewing pictures already taken . Nothing more frustrating than wanting to see that special picture only to find that you had the camera in the video mode and had nothing to show . With this camera , it is much more clearly apparent which mode you have chosen and the preview mode has its own little button . 4 . 4X zoom is better than the older 3X . 5 . The optical viewfinder is a must and I would never recommend buying a camera without one . If you are so inclined , wait until you are out in the bright sun and cannot see the screen . 6 . Small , sleek and fits anywhere . On the down side : 1 . It is a little slow at times , especially when saving the picture . In all , a good choice . Why pay much more if you are looking for a familty-type use camera ? We are happy with the performance of these Canon products and highly recommend them
      • 107 4  I am a professional photographer , and the images from this camera are terrific . It has some important auto-overrides , such as exposure + / - compensation , color / contrast adjustments , flash control , etc . , that are usually missing on a point-and-shoot auto camera like these . Great feature is the AA battery rather than proprietary rechargable . On remote shoots where recharging is not possible , it is a great feature no longer available on most cameras . Controls are not as user-friendly as on my Canon 5D , but with use they are easier to master . A great little camera for vacations and situations where you need a large file size in a compact camera . Very pleased .
      • 121 4  This is my second Canon A1100S . I lost my first one on my trip to Ireland last year . I chose this camera primarily because it has an optical view finder & it is powered by 2 AA batteries . Being compact makes it a great travel camera . The batteries can be purchased any where & I always carry 2 spares in my pocket . To obtain maximum battery life , I use the optical view finder with the viewing screen turned off . The optical view finder is also good to have in bright light conditions when the viewing screen is difficult to see in bright conditions . Unfortunately , Canon is not going to produce this camera anymore . Like other camera makers , Canon will no longer offer similar AA battery cameras like this . I wouldn't mind having a camera that requires special batteries but there seems to be no battery size standard in the new cameras . Each maker uses their own unique batteries that are not interchangeable with other makes / models . They are expensive to replace too ! Purchase this camera at a great price while it's still available .
      • 124 4  We got this for our teenage son to chronicle his adventures without worrying if it got beat-up . He loves all its features and the pictures are better than the ones taken by our more expensive camera . It is easy to set up and use , small enough to fit into a pocket and has lots of different functions for different lighting and scenery . The only negative we have discovered so far is that it eats up batteries pretty quickly . On the plus side , it takes regular AA batteries which are easily found and replaced .
      • 136 4  I've owned a wonderful Canon camera for a while now ( Power Shot SX10IS ) but it is big and bulky and not convenient to carry around with me , just in case i need it . I cannot tell you how many times i have said I WISH i had my camera with me . . . . Well , i bought this little beauty and keep it in my handbag and have used it countless times . I am thrilled with the ease of use and the quality of the pictures it takes . I would definitely recommend this camera to my family and friends .
      • 164 4  Best batteries yet ! I'm tired of loosing the special cable necessary to charge the battery for camera . This is one of the few camera's I found that uses standard AA batteries . Doesn't matter if I'm traveling or at a school event , I'm not looking for an outlet to charge or a converter . I can carry extra batteries with me . Change ' em out and I'm good to go .
      • 201 4  I spent quite a while researching which camera I wanted . I picked this one for several reasons . I like the AA batteries , the close-up abilities , and it has a fairly nice zoom . Great camera , would recommend it to anyone .

    • 100 4  Bought this camera in December 2009 . By June 2010 , camera lens would not open due to a lens error . It seems that this is a common error and it's too expensive to have fixed . There are many websites devoted to this error and how to diy fix . Unfortunately , the diy problems would not work . Most people have to purchase another camera . Having had Canon cameras for years and years , it is a disappointment that Canon would make a shoddy product and pass it on as high quality .
      • 209 4  Great camera for a great price . Easy to use . Bought one for my mother in Florida , and she loves it too .
      • 211 4  Just pure delight to use this camera . Great value for money and would recommend this camera .
      • 243 4  For the size and for its ' designed use , it's a nice little , point and shoot camera .

    • 144 4  The size is good for me . I take it every where in my coat pocket . I have experience with technical features but wanted a simple point and shoot camera . The A 1100 IS as simple as it gets . However , it does have manual override features if I want to us them . I get great results with just point and shoot and that's all that I wanted . Photo's are sharp and crisp coming off my Canon printer . I am very satisfied with the color . I am really pleased with the purchase and do recommend it .
      • 132 4  I bought this camera to replace my Canon A1000IS which worked very well , but got lost at Mardi Gras . I can't get over the quality of the photos I have taken with this camera ! I use this camera daily on the job to photograph structures and the fine detail is unbelievable . When I photograph welded joints at a distance over 10 ' and use the zoom my photos appear as if I am looking through a magnifying glass . Away from work photos I have taken are sharp and crisp looking .

    • 146 4  Received camera and was able to take pictures for one day before camera stopped working . Kept making a clicking sounds but would not take pictures . I think the clicking was the autofocus trying to focus . Replaced batteries still no luck . Was going to send back to Amazon for a replacement but they were sold out . Sent back to Amazon for full refund . Great service from Amazon . Went to WalMart and bought another one just like it and it has worked perfectly for past 2 months . Wife loved the style and model so we decided to give Canon another try .
      • 054 4  It takes great pictures but it uses batteries very fast . The shutter lag and the lag between pictures make it a pain to use with people even if they are standing still . It's even worse if you want to take a picture of something moving . I would use it only for landscapes . It is frustrating for any other use . Wish I had not bought it .
      • 221 4  We got this to take on vacation and were not disappointed . It takes great pictures and videos . With an 8gb card it takes almost endless videos and pictures . Downloading to my pc is a snap .

    • 187 4  We had to replace a 5 year old Canon PowerShot after our 5 year old broke the old one . Looked at online reviews & consumer reports . Seemed to be the best bang for your buck . It is a great bang for your buck . The picture quality is very good - better than the older more expensive one . The only feature we don't have that we liked on the old camera is a quick shutter . It was good for capturing small children without having to wait for the shutter to catch up . The quality & size makes me not miss the feature much . GREAT BANG FOR YOUR BUCK ! ! ! !

      • 200 4  When I bought the camera , I purchased an extra memory card because you never get enough memory with the canon digitial comeras . However , other trhan that , its a nice every day camera for taking better than average pictures . There are a lot less moving parts to worry about then my old digital olympus that failed long before its time . This camera has been going strong for a good while now and I alwasy try to bring it on fun occastion . The auto focus works suprisingly well but sometimes it is off ; which is why I take multiple pictures .
        • 036 4  I bought this camera so my mom , who is kind of technology challenged , could take pictures without much problem . It works and while it doesn't have too many bells an whistles , it's reliable and fun
        • 061 4  Easy to use , easy to get good shots , easy to load pictures on computers . This camera does it all , and is a great value for the price !
        • 117 4  This is my third Canon . The other two were handed down while I got more pixels . It's simple to use and takes great pictures and short movies .
        • 130 4  The camera does a very fine job in taking pictures , it has very logical ease of operation but the battery , part of the purchase , allows only the shooting of less than ten pictures before overheating . I did not realize from the add that this was not a camera with a rechargeable battery ! Cameras previously bought always had a charger and the battery to match !
        • 153 4  I measure products in terms of bang for buck . This camera has incredible bang for buck . The cost is low , and the quality is high . The pictures are clear , crisp , and with excellent color and contrast . It is easy to use . It is light weight , but does not feel cheap . The zoom has improved a lot compared to older versions of these cameras . I would recommend this product .
        • 176 4  I really like this camera . The pictures are sharp . It is easy to use . It is easy on batteries . I recommend it highly .
        • 180 4  I have reviewed many cameras . This is the best of the digital cameras I have seen so far . I will keep this one ! It's a keeper . . . . and so easy to use .
        • 181 4  Great value , quality pics , easy to use . I use it professionally as a backup to my Rebel and take it with me everywhere . I had the ten MP version and it was great , took over 45k images before it broke , lense got stuck open , but the camera paid for itself many times over . Best low cost point and shoot on the market .
        • 189 4  I really like this camera but have a problem with the battery and card being in the same compartment . Having to hold the button down while opening it makes it hard to open and I am afraid I will break it when I open it . I had to have my daughter get it open for me and she felt it was poorly made as well . That I feel is the only defect in the camera - . That part should have been made better . I love the green color and the size makes it easy to manage . I like the way it focuses for you when taking pictures .
        • 213 4  I love this camera ! It is easy to use , and takes beautiful pictures . The instructions are easy to understand , it's easy to operate and does a great job . I highly recommend this as a great camera that is user-friendly .
        • 223 4  I have had prior Canon products and have always been impressed with their intrinsic value , whether copiers or cameras . This camera does not dissapoint . It's easy to use , has great picture quality and is priced right . This particular one was purchased for my sister-in-law who saw how happy we were with our previous purchase . She is very happy with this camera .
        • 227 4  Takes great pictures . The quality is fantanstic . The camera its self is fun and easy to use with alot of great features . Love it . I recommend buying this product .
        • 234 4  I just love my new canon powershot . It's easy to use and takes great pictures . Also , the price was incredibly low .
        • 236 4  I don't like to fuss so this is great for my use . Just point and shoot and get great pictures . Small enough to to fit in a pocket but large enough to hold securely . Love it .
        • 238 4  I bought this camera to capture every memorable moment of my kid's lives and for trips and the like . It has a ton of nice features and it is a great camera for the price . its not professional quality , but its perfect for personal uses . The pictures are crisp and clear and the colors are true . A great buy imo ! !
        • 239 4  For the price of this camera and ease of use , this is an excellent buy . I have children and love the ability to take candid or potrait shots . The range of options is precisely what I needed without having to read a manual before taking pictures .
        • 247 4  I just purchase this Camera for Christmas , is really wonderful camera I love it , is ease to use and excellent quality .
        • 251 4  It's a great camera for the price . The picture quality is excellent and it is very easy to use . I keep it in my pocketbook all the time and the battery life is great . I use rechargeable double A's . The movie quality is also good for a small inexpensive digital camera . I upload short clips to a website to share with family and it is easy to do and so handy .
        • 253 4  I bought this camera for my wife to replace a lost camera of about the same price , by a different manufacturer , and we find the Canon to be much better . We rate it highly for value at this price .

      • 205 4  love this camera , had one a year ago but it was stolen so i was glad to find Amazon still had one available as they have been discontinued by Cannon for a newer model . Takes great pictures , very little shutter lag , battery life is good with Lithium batteries and it is very simple to operate . Only drawback to the camera is i wish it had a longer zoom .
        • 168 4  A very good product and prompt service from amazon , except for the high delivery charges . The product is working satisfactorily , but battery life is very poor . Battery lasted only for two uses . Should educate the customer on using camera and battery effectively so it may last longer .

      • 230 4  Frustrated with this camera , which we've had for 2 + years . It takes great photos , don't get me wrong . The compartment door to the battery & SD card compartment broke . It is made of plastic and a little catch piece on the door broke , so that the door will not firmly close . This causes the the camera to read that the batteries are low and the batteries seem to drain much faster now . We've taped the door shut , and I even hold it shut while I'm taking photos . It's a real pain . B / c of the frequency of removing photo cards from cameras , any mfr . should make this part of the camera metal . For this reason only , I don't recommend the camera .
        • 060 4  Bought this for my husband and he seems to like it very much . It's been over 5 years since we've bought a camera and like everything else , so much has changed ! This camera seems much more intuitive in its use than our older digital camera . Picture quality seems very good . If I were to give anything a negative - it would be the little door where the battery / memory card goes . It's a little on the flimsy side and rather awkward to use . I think for the price it's a great deal and Amazon's quick shipping was appreciated .
        • 078 4  This a great camera for the price . It does everything we need it to do . We especially like the kids and pets feature which has allowed us to take much better pictures of our toddler . It is possible to snap multiple pictures in a short period of time . Picture quality is very good . Definitely worth the money !

      • 255 4  This was a Christmas Gift for my Fiance . She loves it . She does a lot of listing on Ebay so she needed a camera that would take quality pictures and still be portable for personal use . Plus she loves pink . The camera has a lot of cools features to it that I had never seen , like tracking the faces of everyone in the picture .
        • 199 4  This camera does all it is said too , and more . Playing with most of the features is intuitive . It would help if the booklet that come with it had more info , for times when you don't have online access . Great size , very comfortably to handle . Wish it came with a better memory card , they are so cheap now .

      • a Canon G9 i know isnide out , and a canon s90 . i wanted a very capable , cheap and reasonably compact point and shoot . i have enough cameras that are large , and far more complicated , and cater to my needs as a more ambitioned creative hobby photographer ( which means i mainly screw around with aperture settings , demand quick optics and electronics , and use something like Photoshop Elements 8.0 - adjust version a month from now : D - for occcasional post-processing , really , if we are honest ) . nevertheless , let's get to the point , and make the review stand out a tad by being somewhat controversial with a guess-timate : i would venture that 90% of people buy far more camera capabilities than they'll ever need or train themselves to exploit ; and as far as camera enthusiasts go , they'll just need the ambitious setting capabilities for 10% of the pictures they take . the digital revolution makes us appreciate convenience , and makes us take * most * pictures either in full or semi-auto mode . really , there is nothing to be ashamed about , we all do it . but enough about philosophy and paradigm shifts , and on to the A1100 . what i have to say is , wow , this camera takes awesome panoramic or group / people / porttrait pictures in full auto mode outside or good indoors lighting , which means traditionally low ISO settings and a distance ~ 8ft or so . i mean , amazingly sharp . i'll go further - go challenge your friend with an EOS 5D in such unchallenging , good-lighting and typical subect settings . the A1100 produces great pictures by * any * price standard in very standard environments . which is what the vast majority of people will need . and , honestly - if you don't somewhat thoroughly experiment with your camera regularly , and if you haven't ready the manual cover to cover at least twice , the fact is you do fall into this category of users . then there are the more challening environments : typically indoors , and the amount of objects , less light and artificial lighting sources and intensity and wavelengths thereof that challenge cameras . sure , like every other full auto , the Canon A1100 applies the considerable and able capabilities of the high end , latest gen Digic chip to get the job done . and it performs admirably , albeit with the typical temperamental and inconsistent nature of smart digital cameras ( but it takes more good pictures in the process than anything i have experienced before , mind you ) . the thing is , in such settings , do yourself a favor and go for semi auto mode . by that i mean the P setting along with what the A1100 calls center based AF frame , which gives you quick control : a half-click gets the camera to evaluate your main subject in the middle , and then you can go compose and eventually go through with the shot . focus lock is your friend , and make sure to tell the camera to keep the ISO as low as you can ( i limit it to 200 ) . do that , and then . . . darn , does the A1100 take great shots inside too or what ? pretty awesome . do * not * challenge your friend with the EOS in more contrast rich , low lighting settings , though . : - ) don't get me wrong , the full auto mode seems to work pretty well inside too : this is the perfect camera to turn into full auto , hand over to someone else , and tell them to just click away . it will be hard for them to totally screw up pictures , no matter how hard they try ( amazing how many people still simply pull all the way through , which may explain some of the picture quality complaints in here ) . i've had a 90 year old take a picture of me with this camera , and it made her day to feel like a pro photographer after she saw the results . but if you own the camera , you owe it to yourself to experiment with the semi and creative modes . and then you will really need a compelling reason to buy more camera . amazing . the summary is : the A1100 is a very capable camera by any price standard , and a * superb * and * stellar * camera considering its value . i mean , i can take amazing pictures i can blow up to poster size , and yet given its price tag i don't have to be overly afraid to lose or subject it to some hardship given it's not asking me to burn a lot of $ to acquire it ! the optics are fast enough , the electronics seem extremely capable , the camera is a perfect auto point and shooter and yet allows ambitioned users to beat those results by using semi auto modes smartly ( if they bother to learn ) . so , as so often , you have to know what and why you are buying it . and be honest with what you really and truly need . there is no way those who really use it well will have complaints about picture quality - it is amazing considering what you pay . if i am to mention complaints , i'd say battery life . in indoor use you'll be lucky to get ~ 100 shots with NiMH rechargables , but i have gone an dbought the SONY batteries recommended elsewhere . the battery door takes getting used to . other than that - very nice , simple , and reasonably compact camera considering you can just pop in AAs . cameras like the A1100 convince me that , a few years from now , photography will not necessarily be about knowing technicalities like apertures or f-stops or the like - it will be about creativity and an eye for the right scene . hate it or love it , the digital revolution will create and egalitarian creative environment and eliminate technicalities . and we are more than halfway there with a camera like the a1100 . i follow a dual camera strategy these days , and the A1100 is the perfect companion to anything else i own for more ambitioned stuff .
        • 002 4  I'm an experienced photographer already equipped with DSLRs ( EOS 30D , EOS 5D MKII ) , but these are not always pratical when you are travelling or biking ( I do both on a regular basis ) . I try to take my DSLRs as often as possible with me but but there are occasions when I don't want to be bothered by the bulky cameras . At the same time , having already invested significantly in DSLR equipment , I wanted to limit my investment . A G10 or G11 would have been nice but for what I wanted to do , it would have been an overshoot . I'm mainly using my A1100is for candid pictures or pictures of places I know I will be coming back with my DSLRs later . Overall , I'm happy about quality of the pictures . I rarely use the full resolution , I typically shoot with medium resolution as I will rarely print large pictures ( I have my DSLRs for that ) . What I like : - price - size - optical viewfinder ( not many point and shoot cameras at this price range still has an optical viewfinder ) - slow shutter speed flash mode - IS What I'm missing : - no aperture priority mode where I can choose a precise f-stop - wish would have a wider angle I would definitely recommend this for people on low budget but still wants good quality pictures . It has a lot of features for a camera which sells around $150 .
        • 003 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) I recently decided to upgrade from my Powershot A540 to the A1100IS .
        • 007 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Pink ) ( Electronics ) I have had Kodak digital cameras the last few I have had , but after the last one got damp in a bag of at the beach , I needed a new one .
        • 009 4  the Canon A1100IS is one of those cameras that invite one of those philosophical , paradigm-shift discussions about the changing nature of photography . but that seems a distraction and for the sake of a review we should talk about the camera itself . just to tell you where i come from - i compare the results i obtain with the A1100 with the 2 other cameras i have come to use the most : a Canon G9 i know isnide out , and a canon s90 . i wanted a very capable , cheap and reasonably compact point and shoot . i have enough cameras that are large , and far more complicated , and cater to my needs as a more ambitioned creative hobby photographer ( which means i mainly screw around with aperture settings , demand quick optics and electronics , and use something like Photoshop Elements 8.0 - adjust version a month from now : D - for occcasional post-processing , really , if we are honest ) . nevertheless , let's get to the point , and make the review stand out a tad by being somewhat controversial with a guess-timate : i would venture that 90% of people buy far more camera capabilities than they'll ever need or train themselves to exploit ; and as far as camera enthusiasts go , they'll just need the ambitious setting capabilities for 10% of the pictures they take . the digital revolution makes us appreciate convenience , and makes us take * most * pictures either in full or semi-auto mode . really , there is nothing to be ashamed about , we all do it . but enough about philosophy and paradigm shifts , and on to the A1100 . what i have to say is , wow , this camera takes awesome panoramic or group / people / porttrait pictures in full auto mode outside or good indoors lighting , which means traditionally low ISO settings and a distance ~ 8ft or so . i mean , amazingly sharp . i'll go further - go challenge your friend with an EOS 5D in such unchallenging , good-lighting and typical subect settings . the A1100 produces great pictures by * any * price standard in very standard environments . which is what the vast majority of people will need . and , honestly - if you don't somewhat thoroughly experiment with your camera regularly , and if you haven't ready the manual cover to cover at least twice , the fact is you do fall into this category of users . then there are the more challening environments : typically indoors , and the amount of objects , less light and artificial lighting sources and intensity and wavelengths thereof that challenge cameras . sure , like every other full auto , the Canon A1100 applies the considerable and able capabilities of the high end , latest gen Digic chip to get the job done . and it performs admirably , albeit with the typical temperamental and inconsistent nature of smart digital cameras ( but it takes more good pictures in the process than anything i have experienced before , mind you ) . the thing is , in such settings , do yourself a favor and go for semi auto mode . by that i mean the P setting along with what the A1100 calls center based AF frame , which gives you quick control : a half-click gets the camera to evaluate your main subject in the middle , and then you can go compose and eventually go through with the shot . focus lock is your friend , and make sure to tell the camera to keep the ISO as low as you can ( i limit it to 200 ) . do that , and then . . . darn , does the A1100 take great shots inside too or what ? pretty awesome . do * not * challenge your friend with the EOS in more contrast rich , low lighting settings , though .
        • 010 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I like the picture quality , which is excellent for this point and shoot class camera .
        • 012 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I got this for the wife . I have an Elph that I love because it fits in a shirt or pants pocket . She likes the A1100IS because it has a big LCD screen and it takes AA batteries . She uses rechargables , but I also like the AAs because if my camera battery dies and hers also die , we can get AAs anywhere in a pinch and have at least one camera going . My mother also has this camera and she likes the feel of the camera . The same battery compartment that makes this model bigger than the Elph is a plus in her mind because it gives her something solid to wrap her fingers around . Anyway , other reviews are more in depth , but I have to say one thing about the reviews that say the pictures are out of focus . This is going to sound stupid , but I had the same reaction when we took a few pictures on Christmas morning . I reviewed them on the LCD screen and they were horrible . I thought I got a lemon and was very disappointed . Then I realized there was a nearly invisible plastic protective sheet over the LCD . When I peeled that off , everything was perfect . That may not be what happened to the others who complained about fuzzy photos , but I just wanted to make this clear ( no pun intended ) because I almost made a big mistake . So FYI : Unlike similar protective sheets I've seen on a hundred different products ( I even leave them on my cell phones and such until they peel themselves off ) , on this camera that sheet is not clear , it makes everything look out of focus and it was hard to detect .

        • 014 4  I had high hopes for this compact digital camera after reading the positive reviews . . . . . I should have paid more attention to the bad reviews . On it's first real test , which was outside on hot day , it practically inhaled batteries . ( it takes 2 AA's and this day I used 6 batteries over a 4 hour period ) The zoom control stopped working , but worked later when the camera cooled off . . . . the camera repeatedly shut itself off . . . . . Now for the picture quality . . . . not bad until you enlarge the image . When the images are upsized to 100% , they take on a grainy , diffused , soft focus effect that is paricularly noticeable on the subject's edges . . . . . . no thanks . In general the camera has a weak , low quality feel and performance to match . I own several digital cameras and thought it would be nice to have a high megapixel ( 12.1 ) super compact . . . . . this camera is more like a toy . . . . . . I sent it back , and will put the $ $ toward something that will deliver what it promises .
        • 015 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Pink ) ( Electronics ) I had the Canon A530 and just wanted a larger screen and I thought the pink was just a cute , girly color .
        • 018 4  I've had this camera for a little over a month . I took back the A1000 and got this for the same price . It is exactly what I was looking for . I wanted to upgrade my 5 year old Olympus z50 zoom . The Canon a1100 was very easy to use , has a great zoom for an almost compact style camera . Negatives are few and far between . I would say the speed using flash is a little slow , but not too bad . I have no need for detailed aperture ( sp ) settings but I hear they are limited . Positives are numerous and I will only cover a few . I like the ease of use the best . PHD ( push here dummy ) is what I was looking for . The A1100 has the new 4 digicam processor and I did notice a speed increase from the A1000 . The pictures come out perfect every time even though I don't have the steadiest hand . I have no complaints about using the flash as the pictures come out great . I like the AA batteries as I was always missing pictures before with my old camera . I picked up some rayovac hybrids as I cant find enloope locally . I get 50 to 100 shots and I always preview my pics so I could get a lot more . Conclusion : I was really looking for another Olympus , but couldn't stomach the user reviews . The canon has been a real pleasant surprise at a great price . I tried the can A2000 , A1000 and A1100 . The 2000 wasn't much different except a little more zoom . I would definitely buy it again ! ! I am sold on canon ( for now ) .
        • 019 4  I sent this camera back after using it for one day . The picture quality was terrible . The autoexposure washed everything out in nearly every shooting situation . Not only that , no amount of tweaking could give crisp photos - they appeared to be both poorly focused and have a large amount of sensor noise . I've seen better photos from disposable film cameras . I have quite a few Canon products , including dSLR's and point and shoots , and have generally been happy with their recent product line . This made the A1100 all the more disappointing . After returning it , I got a SD1200 for not much more and have been extremely happy with the picture quality .

I wanted it for the AA battery usage as where can you not get AA's if your nicads run low ? Screen is a nice size . easy controls , flash is kinda tricky for fill lighting . picture sharpness is ok , not as good as my old sony digi cam . I like to have manual controls and this camera does not have that feature , no biggie for a point and shoot , however it's nice to have control in tricky lighting situations . Like i said the bigest drawback it the way they made the battery door . it will break ! no way around it . it is that poorly made . cheap flimsy spring and a thin plastic door make for that disaster to come . for 200 bucks it's a nice camera for the quick point and shoot use that i needed for kids or other non pro to use . I did not try enclosed software as i use google picasa for that . for 200 bucks the competition is slim and this is the tops for the price range with a must have AA battery for me .

        • 022 4  I spent a year with a Canon Powershot A60 and I thought the picture quality was spectacular . We are talking only 2 megapixels here . So I got the A1100 IS with 12.1 megapixels and expected to be BLOWN AWAY . What I got , especially for landscapes , looked like very bad polaroids from the 1970s . Bad colors and unfocused . You Gotta Be Kidding Me . Canon's email help sent me the steps to reset the camera defaults . I did that but to no avail . Next step : their toll free phone service . . . after talking with a very helpful service rep he realized I wasn't a total dilettante and advised me to return the item . So I brought it back to the location of purchase and invited all the sales reps to see for themselves . They decided it was the camera and not an inept customer . They even pulled another A1100 IS off of their shelf and tried that with the same results . I received a full refund , but was very disappointed because , after all , I wanted a camera ! I believe that a bad lot must have rolled off the Canon production line . What else could explain such low quality ? Certainly the prototypes could not have been this pathetic . The more positive customer reviews indicate that some good batches shipped out . ( It is a surprise since I had a Canon AE - 1 SLR 35mm in the good old days of film and it was awesome . ) Caveat Emptor . ( In boldface , italics , and underlined . Add a gazillion exclamation points . )
        • 024 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) The A1100IS I had was just OK .
        • 026 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) Though the overall quality of this point and shoot camera seems good , there are a couple of issues I have with it . Don Martin
        • 028 4  Overall I am pleased with my camera . The zoom is a bit difficult to control. It is easy to over or under zoom. The icons need imigination to figure out because thy are small . The portrait icon should have a simple face and not lines that have to be connected to imagine a face . All the icons should be made simple . WE are not all teenagers . I am over 80 years old .

I picked this model specifically for the optical viewfinder in an under $200 camera . And I'm so glad I did ; there were many times when I wouldn't have been able to see what I was shooting using the LCD display due to the glare . Also , it uses 2AA batteries which are easy to carry / get extras of . . . I would recommend it .

        • 031 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) My first digital camera was an Olympus Camedia with a 10X optical zoom .
        • 033 4  Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) This camera was everything I had been looking for and more ! Perfect size for handling , self focus and face recognition works great . Zoom and focus works in a snap . Being that my last canon has lasted 8 years and counting with this 12.1 mp I can guarantee I wont be looking for a replacement camera any time soon .
        • 034 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) Our Canon 780IS met an unfortunate demise ( dropped ) and had to be replaced .

In general , it is a good , inexpensive small camera that one can carry in a pocket or purse and takes good pictures for a camera of this price range . It has many options and seems to work well in low-light situations if you have a steady hand . My wife and I have dSLRs , but I organize a motorcycle group and you just can't use a full sized camera while riding a bike . I have used other small POS ( point and shoot ) cameras in the past , and this is the best of the lot so far . The camera takes good pictures . Nothing spectacular , but better than my older POS cameras and not as good as my dSLRs . I wouldn't use it to shoot a wedding , but I might keep it in my pocket at one so I can catch something that can't be missed while fumbling with lenses or something else on my ' real ' camera . I can also use the camera with gloves on , except for the display button . It's easy to find in my pocket , turn on , hold , and shoot all with gloves . No . . I don't adjust the camera while riding , but I can switch it from picture to movie mode by touch ( there is a ' gap ' in the clicks between the two modes ) . The field of view is wide enough that I can ' shoot blind ' , that is point the camera behind me and take a picture without looking at the display . Yes . . I delete lots of pictures . Some of the reviews talk about not being able to set ISO . This is incorrect , if you put the camera in program mode and press the function key , you can set the ISO . For most of these types cameras , anything above 200 ISO starts to get very grainy , so I resist the temptation to set the ISO way up in low light situations . I have gotten very good quality pictures at 1 / 40th of a second exposures , although I had to use the same technique target shooters use . . squeeze the trigger and hold . If you do a quick ' click and release ' of the shutter , there will be a lot of motion blur . Better to gently press the shutter and hold until the camera takes the picture . It is also very easy to turn off the display . . . simply keep pressing the display button until it turns off . I leave the display on as the camera has the ability to draw guide lines at 1 / 3 intervals on the camera . Where these lines intersect are places to put areas of interest in your photo . Look at many great photos and you will notice that the person or object isn't in the center , it's off to one side and maybe high or low . Anyone who wants to take great pictures will find themselves using software , even the great film artists used the darkroom to achieve the ' vision ' they wanted . Cropping , dodging , burning , altering the contrast and brightness , are all tools that any photographer should learn when and when not to use . The program that comes with the camera is adequate , but I would recommend anyone that fancies themselves as a photographer to spend another $100 and purchase ' real ' editing software , such as Adobe's Photoshop Elements or Corel's Paint Shop product . These tools allow for more control over the final picture , but don't cost hundreds of dollars like the Photoshop CS line and do not have a steep learning curve . The camera is a bit bulky , but I choose it over slimmer models because it uses AA batteries . There is nothing more frustrating than to get somewhere and have your sleek battery pack run out of juice . At least with AA , you can buy more at just about any store or gas station . I would recommend purchasing lithium batteries , regular batteries will get used up quickly . As one reviewer noted , rechargeable batteries are also a great option , although I would make sure I always had a spare , fully charged set with me . Two negative comments . First , the flash is useless . If you are close enough , things get all blown out . Too far back and things are not bright enough . The ' acceptable ' distance is very narrow , and the edges get too dark . About the only acceptable way I have gotten pictures with the flash is to use the old ' Kleenex ' trick - - drape one or two layers of tissue paper over the flash to dull the light a little bit and then crop out the dark edges . Secondly , it is very easy to accidentally change the camera settings . I find myself constantly checking to make sure it is still in ' program ' or ' movie ' mode . ( I tend not to use the scene modes , but adjust the exposure and white balance myself . )

( I tend not to use the scene modes , but adjust the exposure and white balance myself . )
        • 040 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) I have a professional digital camera , but needed something that I could keep in the diaper bag and pull out whenever the children do something cute .
        • 042 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) I've been a Canon ® guy for a long , long time - - over 40 years to be exact ( Gad ! ) . So when I decided to get the Beautiful Wife ( BW ) a new camera for Christmas , it was a Canon ® , no argument . She's a make it easy , no figuring stuff out , point and shoot kind of person who just wants to take some nice photos of family , the office gang , and be able to slip a camera into that travel trunk called a purse for easy access . This little camera fits those requirements pretty darn well . It's small yet not too small that it feels overly delicate ; the viewfinder is a big plus - - trust me : composing a shot in the viewfinder will force you to actually take some good photos and not just those arm's length snapshots ; the controls are well-placed and simple to use - the Auto setting is fine for most folks until you decide to play around with the other modes ( which you SHOULD - be creative ! ) ; the photo quality , so far , is excellent . 12 megapixels is , in my humble opinion , just fine for almost everyone . Unless you're shooting stuff for billboard-size enlargements , anything more is just overkill . The face detection setting works fairly well - it locked onto most faces pretty quickly , even in dim light . I only found three small cons so far : 1 . Battery consumption is higher than I'd like - the BW drained a fully-charged set of AAs fairly quickly but admittedly there was a LOT of shooting during the Christmas melee . 2 . The view screen is set almost flush with the camera's back and thus is easily scratched . A screen protector is really needed and Canon should include one as they're fairly cheap . 3 . The included 128mb card is way too small unless you plan on shooting only at the lowest resolution which defeats the purpose of having all those pixels . Get a 4GB card - they're cheap also , and you won't get caught without card space when that opportunity of a great photo arises . That's nitpicking , I know , but that's just my view . In all , I think Canon ® has a winner here - nothing earth shaking , but a good quality camera that's not hard to use , is compact but not toylike , and takes some sharp and nicely lit photos even on the basic Auto setting . After the BW ( and myself if she lets me ) uses it for awhile , I may revisit this review for an update but so far I think it'll do just fine .

After using it for a few weeks , my overall impression is : Pros : - uses AA batteries - image stabilization is great - size ( easily fits in the hand and / or pocket ) - viewing screen - picture quality - face detection is cool and useful Cons : - face detection does not seem to kick in consistently - no manual controls for aperature or shutter speed - shutter lag is greater than I had hoped - flash is strong in the center , weak on the sides of the image - flash recharge time can be longer than hoped for All in all , a good camera for the price , but a step down from our trusty old A520 .

        • 046 4  The pictures this little camera takes are excellent . Lots of detail and great colors . It is very easy to use . Just point and shoot ! Or , study the manual and try some of the special conditions settings for even better pictures . It is a perfect size for adult size hands . The controls are very intuitive . I was able to shoot 450 pictures in Europe on one set of AA Lithium batteries . The batteries still have life . In total , I have taken around 800 pictures on that set of batteries and they are still going . Outdoor pictures in daylight conditions are absolutely stunning ! This is a great camera for the price !

The ease of use and picture quality are perfect for her , and for me , as well . The IS is very effective . It is much more than she expected , but not as intimidating as she worried it would be . Perfect for someone who wants to produce great , hassle-free images of family , friends , and the world .

It is a little bulky for my taste but well I can carry it at least in a big pocket . I most def recommend this camera for more than an entry level , and actually I received it on time from amazon
        • 051 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Pink ) ( Electronics ) The A1100is is a replacement for my wife's broken Pentax M20 which was perfect for her .

We tested the camera when we received it , and it worked fine . The family member left the next day for the trip , with the camera packed safely in a carry-on . A few days later the camera stopped working , displaying an = Lens error ; restart camera message . The Canon support site says that if restarting the camera doesn't fix the problem ( it didn't ) , the camera is dead and needs service . Disappointing .

        • 062 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) I really like how this camera looks , and how sturdy it is ( compared to other cameras ) . I am really disappointed with how delicate everything is being made these days and this camera just seemed a little more substantial . It is . We do carry it in a case for extra protection . The only thing I see cheap about it is the thing that you lift up to put the batteries and / or memory stick in . EVERY time I do this , I am afraid I am going to break the thing . This is very frustrating , as I know if it's broken then the camera is basically useless . I wish they would have made this part a little better . I can see it is going to be a problem . I am disappointed that it doesn't have the rapid picture feature where it will take many pictures in a row for action shots . That is the only thing - feature-wise - that I see is lacking . Also , if it is in easy mode some of the pics tend to be blurry . I'm not sure why that is . I am playing around with other picture settings to avoid that . Also , I will often take many pictures hoping one of them doesn't end up blurry . It seems it is mostly when it is in easy mode that it has the excessive blurriness .

        • 064 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) To quote a friend , The most important feature of a camera . . . is that you have it with you when you need it . That said , I bought this camera because I wanted to have something that would travel easy , inconspicuously , and not slow me up . In this regard , the Canon PowerShot is everything I hoped for . I purchased this just before a week long trip to WA DC and used it the entire time ( 200 + photos ) without ever feeling like it was a chore to get at or use . One tap of the on / off button and the camera jumps to life and is ready to shoot in literally 1 second ( no delays and / or waiting ) . My previous digital camera ( from another manufacturer ) spent most of the time in my vehicle and didn't get a lot of use as it was bulkier and the Lithium-Ion batteries always seemed like they were dead and didn't last very long . Another reason for acquiring this particular model camera was the fact that it takes ( 2 ) off the shelf AA batteries . I picked up ( 4 ) NiMH rechargeables , with the added peace of mind that I can stop into most any store to acquire additional batteries should the need ever arise . CAUTION - this camera does burn through batteries so be prepared . I swapped out the NiMH batteries 3 times to take those 200 + pictures . . . and those batteries are supposed to last up to 3 times longer than their non rechargeable counter parts . While I haven't tried it yet , shutting down the LCD and using the optic viewfinder would certainly help ameliorate this issue ( another plus of this model ) . Finally , the only funky things I noticed with this camera are : 1 ) Every once in a great while ( perhaps 1 in 100 shots ) it would be slow to acquire focus on an object . Almost like it was confused and needed an extra 10 seconds or so before the LCD display turned from a blur to something distinguishable . 2 ) While in Auto mode ( where it spends most of the time ) the only flash options are Automatic and No Flash . The problem is that against bright backdrops the camera won't recognize the need for the flash to better illuminate the subject and you can't override to force a flash . The problem is solvable , as in those instances , you'll just need to switch over to another of the pre-programmed shooting modes that does allow you to push a flash situation . A minor nuisance , but something to be aware of . These truly minor nitpicks aside , I am very pleased with this camera and would recommend it to anyone looking for a thoroughly well featured , portable , at-the-ready solution .

I have had an older model Elph that still takes GREAT pictures ( circa 2001 ) and is a perfect pocket compact . I recently purchased the SX10IS and feel it is the best camera I have owned . I bought the A1100 for my sister and decided to test it before sending it to her . I only tested indoor flash pictures . Also , have not worked with it enough to comment on battery life . PROS : AA batteries ( tired of expensive Li-ion batteries that stop being made ) Light weight Large LCD screen CONS : Pictures appear grainy after downloading , even without zoom Camera clicks while focusing 3 second delay between flash pictures ( huge CON ) While lightweight , feels cheaply constructed . Sadly , will be returning it and finding another compact that uses AA batteries with faster image acquisition and crisper pictures .

It made our old camera that we took along for backup look mediocre . Image stabilization is very good , exposure in low lighting was impressive , and automatic settings worked well to give us impressive photos . The only surprise was that there's no selection for image quality to control the size of the files .

It was exactly what I was looking for . Bought this camera to replace and old digital camera who's LCD display stopped working . Everything worked as expected . It would have been nice if the camera could save RAW files but I guess most value oriented point and shoots do not do this anymore . This camera has a real optical view finder , something I was looking for . With an optical finder , I don't have to switch to my reading glasses every time I want to use the camera . It is a pain to have to switch back and forth between distance and reading glasses when taking pictures with cameras with no optical finders . Also , you can still compose your shot even when the sun or other bright light source is behind you . Something difficult to do when the camera has no optical finder . Nice camera to have when you don't want top drag your SLR with you or you don't want to worry about your camera but want some snap shots . Good camera , good price . Nice job Canon .

        • 074 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I bought this camera based on the reviews it had . Between amazon and cnet , we thought we were getting a good deal . The price was right but we are returning the camera . The good : - Slim and portable .

Perhaps there's a production problem , most people seem very happy with this camera .

        • 079 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) This Canon Powershot A1100 replaced an earlier Canon A540 for me . The earlier A540 was badly damaged in an accident . It has many similarities to the earlier Powershot which made the transition very easy . The longer-than-average 4x optical zoom was a good feature for me . And the digital zoom extends the reach for those situations like shooting wildlife where getting closer is not possible . I do not know the details of how the image stabilization works but it definitely helps on the zoomed images . I am able to make good usable images at 12x and 16x zooms that would have been blurs on the last camera . This made possible bird pictures on a recent trip that would otherwise have required a more-expensive camera with a 10x optical zoom . Note that if you want to control some of the factors in the way the camera takes the picture , such as ISO speed and focus options , you need to learn the P-program setting . I use it to up the ISO speed to 200 or 400 in low-light or shade situations to keep the shutter speed fast . The 2 main Auto modes take very good pictures as well . One note is that I'm still trying to check the battery life . It seems to use up a pair of AA batteries faster the previous camera . I use the rechargable AA batteries which are the best way to go unless you like throwing out alkalines . I've also started to use a new set of batteries so it adds another variable . It looks like I'm getting about 80 pictures per pair of 2600mah batteries . Which seems a little low . But sometimes the new batteries have to go thru about 5 discharge-recharge cycles to get to full strength . So if you are taking more than a few shots it's best to bring a spare set of AAs with you .

But sometimes the new batteries have to go thru about 5 discharge-recharge cycles to get to full strength . So if you are taking more than a few shots it's best to bring a spare set of AAs with you .
        • 081 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) after 3 generations of kodaks , my last one being the kodak z885 was a real lemon . after 3 years of suffering with the z885 quirky problems , i've replaced it with the canon a1100is . i was considering another kodak , a canon , and a panasonic . after my last kodak , i decided that it would stay my last kodak . and the panasonic just did not get enough good reviews , too many the picture quality is a little this and that . fianlly that left the canon which i kept coming back to . the positive reviews out weigh the negatives by a landslide . a lot of , always a great picture . another thing i like is when the professional says , when i don't want to lug my dslr around , this is the camera i carry with me . also the performance was noted as being acceptable to good , not great but there's where you're paying the $300 for a camera , not $129 as with the canon a1100 . so i bought the camera from amazon and you know what , the reviews were accurate . i get great picutures with decent performance . at $129 , this is a pretty darn good camera . i considered the new generation canon a3100is and a3000is but those cameras were more expensive , they didn't have an optical view finder , and they didn't use AA batteries ( which i considered a real convienence ) . also the newer models used the digic 3 processor while the a1100is used the digic 4 processor - someone explain that one to me ? ! so if you are considering and want to get a nice inexpensive camera , get the canon a1100is and get it soon because i'm pretty sure they're on the way out now

And having it on auto it doesn't always fire flash and return makes pictures blurry ! But I love the color . I guess I'm used to my D40 but my powershot had pretty good picture quality !

I own three Canon digital cameras . . . this is the only one that gobbles batteries like they are candy . On a recent trip , I went though 4 sets in one day . Yes , I took a lot of pictures . but with the other Canons I have used , the AA batteries lasted most of the day before I had to change them . Pictures are great , but this power issue is a big disappointment . This will NOT be taken on any vacations . . . it will be a stay at home camera only .

        • 090 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) We have a Canon 8MP Powershot camera and were very happy with it .

The sensor on newer model , while having more megapixels , actually takes much worse pictures . I haven't found a setting yet , even at very low ISO's , that are not marred by grainy noise . This appears to be a classic example of a manufacturer cramming in more megapixels , but having worse picture quality . I like a camera that uses AA batteries , but I'd avoid this one .

Around 2002 - 2003 this same camera was about $350 . We've still got that original camera & it has been terrific , so when we wanted to get a digital camera that could just ' point & shoot ' by a non-computer savvy person-this fit the bill . This elderly gentleman was able to take high quality photos and get them onto a computer to email them to me . Now , that's pretty good . He doesn't even own a computer ! Mentioned it to a high level engineer friend of mine . To my surprise , I found out his entire family ( another engineer , plus a college student ) all had this camera & they are very pleased . They also gave this camera as a gift to an 83 yo woman who has found it very easy to use & get the pictures on the computer also . This is a lightweight , durable , highly versatile camera . What a great buy ! Heartily recommended . ( Love the colors ! )

        • 099 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) Bought this camera in December 2009 .

My old Canon had 4 aa batteries , this one only has two . So . . . you only get maybe half the pictures before you need new batteries . I use Alkalines , I was not happy with the rechargeables I used withmy old camera . They would not hold a charge very long . Over all a very good camera with limitations . Steve
        • 103 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I purchased the Canon PowerShot A1100S through Amazon to replace a 2 year old 8 meg Nikon based on the positive review by consumer Reports .
        • 105 4  This camera is just so-so . I have loved Canon cameras in the past , and Canon was my first choice when I was buying a camera for Momming around - - just quick snaps of the kids at their activities . The recharge time on the flash is well over 1 second . This is frustrating and aggravating for me , as the picture taker , and for the kids . I like that the camera runs on AA batteries , but a four-battery model ( this camera uses only 2 ) would cycle more quickly and be more useful for me . I've had this for 10 months , taken about 10,000 photos on it , and found only about 1,000 worth keeping . The best features are the pulse feature ( which I use for taking group photos ) , the timer feature ( you can take multiple shots on one shutter click - - very helpful ) , and the auto settings . The landscape setting is virtually worthless - - AUTO always takes a better photo . The macro setting is not as good as the AUTO setting , either . The face-finder feature is aggravating . If your kids are in costumes - - or even HATS ! - - or only half-facing you , the camera pauses and pauses and pauses , trying to find a face . I operate with face-finder OFF . There is no way to set the flash to ON in AUTO mode , so in twilight situations or indoors , half the time the AUTO flash does not flash . I would not buy this camera again - - my next camera will definitely be a four-battery model . Still willing to do business with Canon , though .

This site had the best deal with no shipping charge , at the time , which sold me ! I am not an experienced photographer , so I needed something easy to use and to understand how it worked . With a little help from my daughter , I learned how to use this camera and it's functions . This was only the second digital camera I ever owned . I am impressed with Canon Powershot , since I owned a Kodak before this . It is easy to use and takes good pictures . I'm glad I made this choice . I would recommend this camera for your purchase .

        • 110 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) I purchased the 1100IS for 2 main reasons , the optical view finder and the fact that it uses AA batteries . Most of the new 2010 model point and shoot cameras do not offer these features . I find it difficult to take pictures using a display because one has to hold the camera away in order to see the subject of the shot . For me , this generates shake . Using the optical view finder , one brings in ones arms to rest against the body , and the camera rests against the nose / face , giving much more stability . Also , one can pretty much forget about taking pictures on a real sunny day with just a display and no optical view finder . That has been my experience Previous reviews have mentioned that the optical view finder is inaccurate , which I have to agree with . What you see is not what you get . Once you figure out the directions in which it is inaccurate , you have to make that adjustment when focusing the shot . It becomes second nature after a while . Also , because I use the optical view finder , I turn off the display which greatly reduces the battery drain . The AA batteries are appealing because I do not want to be tied to a proprietary battery that needs to be charged and costs $40 + to replace . In my opinion , whether you use rechargeable AA's or throw-a-ways , AA's are much more practical . I have had the A1100 a month as of 5 / 8 / 10 , have taken 200 + pictures and I am very happy with it . I'm thinking of buying a second one before they become unavailable , because the optical view finder and AA battery offerings are going to be very hard to find in the future . Just checked the price and it has gone up $10 since I purchased my A1100 . : - ( I rate the A110IS a 4 because I never rate anything a 5 , the inaccurate optical view finder and the abbreviated user manual . I know the manufacturers supply quick start manuals rather than the full user manuals , but it irritates me to have to go online to to find out how to do certain things . I printed the user manual , which irritated me even more .

Batteries have been running out quickly , I've heard you should use expensive high quality batteries , the generic ones just don't cut it for camera use . So glad I bought this ! And it really is the best deal on the market .

        • 120 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) This is my second Canon A1100S .
        • 122 4  12 mega pixels ! This is a fantastic deal ! Look , for those who are expecting a SLR , high dollar camera , this is NOT it . However , this is a great deal ! We have shot hundreds of pics since our purchase , and absolutely LOVE it ! We've also shot numerous videos , and they are great quality . This camera was super easy to use and learn . My only critique is the batteries . It does seem to burn through them rapidly , especially if you use flash , or shoot video . If you purchase this , I would highly recommend buying rechargeable batteries ( we got a setup with charger , 4 AA , 4AAA for about $20 ) . I HIGHLY recommend this camera , it is definitely worth the price . One last thing , for those who aren't happy with this camera and have posted bad reviews , RETURN IT ! You cannot beat this for the price .

Yes , the pictures were good but . . . a throw away camera after only three months ! ! Too expensive for that ! The cost of sending it back for repair exceeded the value of the camera .

        • 145 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) Received camera and was able to take pictures for one day before camera stopped working .

If indoor pictures are important to you , do not buy this camera . Also the battery life is unacceptable . The camera comes loaded with selling points which make it sound great , but all that goes to waste once you see the end result of the actual ( indoor ) photos taken .
        • 150 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) This Canon PowerShot A1100IS is the replacement for the A1000IS , and it continues the great features of the older model . Not only does it bump up the megapixels to 12 , but there are several features I like about it : - it automatically saves portrait formatted pictures in portrait mode ; no need to rotate the image with software afterwards ; - it's quick to take pictures - - about 1.5 seconds from a cold start to taking the first image ; - takes only 1.5 seconds to stow it too ; - a amber-colored sighting beam to target your subject for focusing ; - an adequate zoom mechanism ; and - the choice of viewing the image in the panel on the back , or the viewfinder . I had a chance to use the A1000IS for most of last week after my Nikon L4 conked out on me . Although the Nikon was a great little camera and traveled the world without problems for a few years , it finally developed a ' smudge ' inside the lense that couldn't be removed . So I borrowed my nephew's A1000IS , and I was amazed . The bullet points above are the distinct differences between the L4 ( and the L20 , I think ) and the Canon . When it comes to SLR's , I'm a Nikon guy . But this Canon is clearly better than the L4 and well worth the extra $40 + over the L20 .

        • 157 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) I bought this to replace a PowerShot A75 . I don't need lots of special features . All I wanted was a clear , sharp image with good color fidelity - - as good as my A75 ( which died ) would have been fine . Since I bought the A75 more than 5 years ago , I figured that technology would have marched on by now and , even though the A1100 is cheaper , it would be as good as or better than the A75 . I was wrong . The A1100 interface is great - - very clean and intuitive - - but the pictures are lousy . I mean , really lousy : poor focus , poor color fidelity , simply not acceptable at all . And I'm not a professional photographer ( obviously , since I bought this cheap camera ) , so it's not that I'm super-picky . I had figured that , with the A1100 getting so many five-star reviews , maybe the less favorable reviews would have been somehow mistaken , or the people got lemons . They weren't mistaken , and if they got lemons , well , so did I . Yech ! I returned the camera . Unfortunately , I hadn't checked the return policy of the third-party vendor , so I had to pay a restocking fee . Never again ! If returns mean a restocking fee , I won't buy it in the first place . The long and short of it : Don't buy the A1100 . I've now bought a PowerShot SX120 IS ( I do still like Canon ) . It's more $ $ $ , but hopefully better picture quality . After having taken just a few indoor test shots , I can already see that it's better than the A1100 . I hope that will continue to be the case as I test further . I'll try to post my review by the end of December .

I am just an every day photographer and found it to have a lot of features . I LOVE that this camera actually has a view finder ; as that is hard to find anymore . In really bright outdoor light , I find it hard to see the LCD screen , so I appreciate the view finder . For the price , this is a great little camera !

        • 165 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I recently got this camera to gift it to my sister . While I got a chance to play with it I could not stop short of exclaiming Wow's . I regularly use my DSLR , but the ease-of-use provided by this camera has got me into thinking of buying one for myself . Though Canon stopped providing Manual exposure controls Av , Tv , M , . . . on their lower-end point-and-shoots the pictures still come out pretty good . There is a Program Exposure feature which can be played with to your liking . The optical IS is a boon and I have come to appreciate its value since I have wasted quite a lot of photos on my DSLR as I cannot hold the camera still enough while the shutter has been opened . Hopefully Canon starts making the A590IS series which now sell for more than $200 . In the meantime Canon A1100IS is your answer to better photos .

        • 170 4  This purchase was to replace an identical camera that crapped out ( the telephoto control jammed the shutter button ) . The predecessor couldn't be repaired ( it was still under warranty ) and we insisted that Best Buy return our money , which they did . We like this camera because it is one of very few compact cameras remaining that still use a viewfinder in addition to the LCD screen . Other criteria included its use of AA batteries instead of expensive proprietary cells , and the use of SD memory cards that had fit in another Canon predecessor camera .
        • 172 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I was able to use the camera easily with minimal practice including the zoom . The menus are easy to find and easy to understand . It weighs next to nothing but seems really sturdy . I've never felt confident about photography , but with this camera I'm looking forward to learning the more advanced features
        • 174 4  This is the fourth point-and-shoot digital camera that I've owned since 2002 , so I have a standard of comparison by which to make this review . The battery problems of this camera make it unusable . I bought the camera primarily because it will use standard AA batteries . I inserted the batteries that came in the box with it , took about 6 test shots and received the batteries exhausted command on the screen . I went to the store and purchased lithium batteries , which last a lot longer in digital cameras . The camera got so hot to the touch that I could hardly hold it . I turned it off and let it sit for couple hours . When I came back to it I turned it on and got the batteries exhausted command again . I put in yet another set of batteries and let it sit overnight . In the morning it was completely dead . I came to the conclusion it was exhausting batteries , even when turned off , so I contacted Canon . They sent me a UPS shipping tag and I sent it in for repairs . ( Free ) Yesterday I received the repaired camera back from Canon . I put in a set of fresh batteries , took a dozen or so test shots , turned it off . This morning it is AGAIN completely dead . The repaired camera came with a note from Canon stating that it had been restored to factory settings . This camera exhausts batteries , even when it is in the OFF position . It's defectively designed . DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA !

        • 177 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) My last camera was a Kodak and I liked it quite a bit and it did the job . However , the battery compartment cracked and therefore could not read the full battery . I was just about to go out to the West Coast for the first time for a quick trip and knew I needed a camera . Although I searched some Kodak's my sister recommended trying Canon instead . I didn't want anything to big or too small . Just something that would do the job but not take up half a suitcase . I chose the Canon Powershot A1100IS 12.1 because the reviews were good and the pictures that were posted looked good to me . But I must say it is even better then expected . It is easy to use , and the picture quality is fantastic . When I got back from my trip and printed my pictures I could not believe the vibrant colors and quality of my photos . This camera makes any amateur look like a professional . I would definitely recommend this camera to my friends and family . One last note , the green Canon Powershot was like $20.00 - $30.00 dollars cheaper and it's cute . I didn't care what color it was as long as it did the job so I figured why pay more if I could get the green one cheaper . Very happy with this purchase .

I bought this camera for my grandson's 8th grade graduation and took pictures with it throughout the 2 1 / 2 hours of ceremonials and reception . I handed it to him with his class pics within at the end . It was easy to use and batteries were still going strong at the end with a lot of on / off switching during the evening . I have not seen the pictures out of camera yet .

I ordered this hoping for the best in that price range . It's a great camera and I don't regret my purchase . I was disappointed to discover it lacks in setting options . My old Canon had a lot of setting options and I loved the fast moving setting for taking pictures of the kids . This camera has a kids and pets setting but does not take good pictures when there's a lot of movement from the subjects . I have tried all the settings and am disappointed . Overall I am happy with my purchase but advise anyone looking for a range of settings to look spending a little more money on a more advanced Canon camera . * * * After using this camera a little more I felt compelled to add to my review . I wish my old 4 mp canon still worked ! This camera has been a big disappointment ! Any movement of the subject and you get a fuzzy picture . There's also an orange sensor light that is irritating and I haven't figured out how to shut if off ( if you can ) . Every time I try to take a pic of my baby he stops smiling to check out the orange light .

In sunny conditions the screen is hard to see so the optical view-finder is almost necessary . I don't like the shutter delay . I'm accustomed to a film camera's instant shutter . I have taken about 30 photos , which all look good on a computer screen , have not yet printed any photos but at 12 MP those should print well , even printing larger size photos . For a less expensive model it is great .

Firstly the price was right , secondly the ease of use was of a great importance to my wife and I . I was getting so fed up with instruction booklets which were 220 pages long and about as easy to read as the magna carta . The picture quality is also very very good and I imagine that I will never stray away from canon products in the future . This item was a great find .

        • 219 4  I travel a great deal on business and frequently need to document client settings and situations . Also , I have found that in traveling , camping , hiking , it's always great to have a small , capable camera that is expendable . If it can also provide qulaity photos , that's even better . I've always preferred the color rendition and clarity of the Digic chip , and this camera simply does an excellent job . Can I create a better photo with my 5D or 7D ? Sure , but I'll not throw either one of those in my briefcase or just tote them in my pocket on the Long Trail . It's the camera I have with me , under these circumstances , and for that , it is a true winner . It's a product of genuine quality and value , that perfectly pegs the market for which it is intended . I've owned three now and have destroyed two ( after some effort ! ) The first was dropped about 30 feet . It destroyed the ability of the camera to show photos that had been taken , but it still worked fine in preview mode . I hiked 200 more miles with it and took almost 1000 shots over that distance . . . precious shots I am deeply grateful I have . The second was dropped in the Carribean and was packed with sand and salt water . I rinsed it in fresh water , blew out as much moisture as I could with compressed air , and left it in a bowl of rice for about a week . It worked fine , I gave it to my son , and he eventually bounced it down a set of stadium stairs . It still worked but the battery door was damaged and the lens retract mechanism was shot . We retired it . Number three has been treated a bit more gently , but that will almost certainly change - then I will get number 4 . Bravo , Canon .

        • 228 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) As good as twice the price . . Crystal clear . . . . . . I took a pic of an old black and white photo taken in 1930 and it came out better than the original . Even makes a 66 year old man ( me ) look good . I recommend even for professional use .
        • 231 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) I wanted a camera that I could just drop in my purse and go for those Oh , I wish I had my camera moments .

        • 240 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) This camera takes awesome pictures , the zoom is great , and for the money is an excellent product . The one thing to be careful of is not to use it in extreeme cold . The inner lens gets foggy . It is fine once it warms back up . Great product though , unless you are ice fishing . : )
        • 242 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) For the size and for its ' designed use , it's a nice little , point and shoot camera .
        • 244 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Green ) ( Electronics ) I bought this camera as a gift for my wife .

        • 250 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Pink ) ( Electronics ) It's a great camera for the price . The picture quality is excellent and it is very easy to use . I keep it in my pocketbook all the time and the battery life is great . I use rechargeable double A's . The movie quality is also good for a small inexpensive digital camera . I upload short clips to a website to share with family and it is easy to do and so handy .
        • 252 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Blue ) ( Electronics ) I bought this camera for my wife to replace a lost camera of about the same price , by a different manufacturer , and we find the Canon to be much better . We rate it highly for value at this price .
        • 254 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Pink ) ( Electronics ) This was a Christmas Gift for my Fiance . She loves it . She does a lot of listing on Ebay so she needed a camera that would take quality pictures and still be portable for personal use . Plus she loves pink . The camera has a lot of cools features to it that I had never seen , like tracking the faces of everyone in the picture .
        • 256 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) This Canon camera is a perfect addition to the amateur photographers line-up . . . . portable but not too small where you can't push a button without contacting another one .

The camera seems to work very well and she is excited about the pictures she has taken . She is extremely pleased with this camera , and it arrived on time ( before Christmas ) .

      • Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) I am a total novice when it comes to digital cameras . I read all the reviews , queried my students and based on everyone's ideas and suggestion I bought this one ! It is absolutely wonderful and makes me look good as I produce nice crisp shots without shaking or chopping off heads . My only wish would be a place to fasten a strap on both sides of the camera . I bought it for both taking pictures at school and for the quilt shows that I attend . I would like to have it more securely fastened to my person rather than dangling from my wrist . Other than that , it is absolutely wonderful and fulfills all my expectations !
        • 085 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) It burns through batteries faster than any camera I've used . Definitely must use rechargeables if you buy this or it will cost a fortune to operate . Otherwise not a bad camera .
        • 169 4  This review is from : Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5 - inch LCD ( Silver ) ( Electronics ) This purchase was to replace an identical camera that crapped out ( the telephoto control jammed the shutter button ) .
