Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)

  • 028 4  There were soo many contradicting reviews of this camera , however trust me on this one , its a great camera . . . you should be satisfied with it and not compare it with higher end models ! each camera is different ! the review should be on the camera itself as it is ! ! ! I spent months and months reading , reviewing , and searching for my 1st slr , and i though it would be too expensive to buy the XSi , and i absolutely do not regret it at all . . . . 2 mp do not make any different , niether does a larger lcd screen , because you mostly view and edit photos on the computer . . . many people say in their reviews that its poorly built , or they complain about a plastic lens mount , which is all non sense . . . why do you care if the kit lens mount is plastic or metal ? if u want a huge and bulky slr camera , that go pay 2000 bucks and get one . . . what people have done while reviewing this camera is compare it to higher end models , which is rediculous , and it makes the XS seem like a piece of junk , however trust me , im a photography lover , and i think its a great camera . . . obviously when youre buying the xs , your buying it for your hobby , not your profesional career , where im guessing you would want to spend a bit more , therefor for a hobby , there is nothing to complain about , even though i think it can also be hooked up with an expensive lens and it can perform as a great camera for your career . . . nothing is cheeply built , it absolutely does not feel like plastic as some people put it . its firm and solidly put together . It has many setting and options which are very easy to use and play around with and they really really help you get magnificent photos . The owners manual is very easy to understand and very helpfull when you want to get away from the full auto mode , which i used only the first day because playing around with just a few setting like the saturation , the exposure , and white balance produced outstanding photos . . . At night , with a tripod , the shots are absolutely outstanding , as you see cities at night in magazines . Yes you need a tripod not because the camrea is cheaply built and it shakes , but because we are humans and we shake . . . maybe if u buy a more expensive LENSE , not a camera , you might get less shaky hand held results , however most of the time , in the late afternoon , sinsets and so on , you can be fine without a tripod . . you only will need a tripod if you want to take night shots of cities and lights , where its impossible to hand hold the camera . . . Other than that , at night , the camera is great , and the flash works very well . A new canon flash however will be the first accesory i will buy , since when you use flash , you get 0blur when taking photos of your kids while theyre running inside in dim lighting condition , and an external flash would keep the colors great also , however as i said , the built in flash is fine . . when capturing photos of people at night with flash , there is 0 shake in the photo . . . there are very few things that i can complain about , keeping in mind that i did not purchase a 1000 $ + camera . The small things that you can complain about will only be gone with the high end slr cameras , with like 50 point focusing and 11 frames per second . . . however after having this camera for around a month now , ive taken magnificent photos . . . the more i use it , the more i learn how to play around with the aperture , the shutter speen and all the other setting , and i will continue to imporove in taking photos . .
    • 005 4  I should have spent the extra hundred and gotten the XSi should have been the actual title to this review . My dissatisfaction revolves around the XS ' focusing challenges . The camera itself is great - image quality is good , the sensor works fine - - the uptick in image quality between the smaller sensor on a point n shoot is ( to me ) very noticeable - - but the XS , with its 7 - point focusing system has problems , especially in low light . I understand the XSi's 9 - point system is more accurate , and face it , most of us shoot in less-than-ideal lighting conditions , and we don't want to shell out $300 for good flash that won't turn our subjects into wan , demon-eyed ghosts ( I'd rather spend the money on a good prime lense ) so a good-auto focus system is a must . My wife has a Panasonic FZ28 with a Leica lense , and its autofocus capabilities are far superior . XS - great camera , but the autofocus issues are very disappointing . If I could do it over , I'd get the XSi or the Nikon D60 .
    • 007 4  In a nut shell ( based on cameras in this price range ) : * Great picture quality , especially if you know how to manipulate Raw format - software is included * On the small side of DSLRs - can be a pro or con depending on your use * Included software to control the camera with a computer is a major plus for me * Lens is good for being included in a kit at this price , one of the best IMHO . * Read online professional reviews . Really helpful for me . * You can't go wrong with a Canon DSLR * This is a great entry level DSLR , if you can afford it and want more Megapixels and features , jump up to an XSi or TSi . * battery life is good - but get a spare just incase The Long Winded Stuff : I am a Canon snob ever since my first digital camera , which was a point and shoot Canon S30 3.2 MP I paid over $500.00 for . That S30 took better pictures ( as far as quality ) than my wife's Minolta 6 MP DSLR that I bought her years later . I must have bought at least 10 point and shoots and DSLRs for my family and work . All different brands . But every time I didn't buy a Canon I was upset with the purchase . There have been some good Nikons but none better than the Canons . My biggest disapointment was the Minolta DSLR I bought for my wife . Against my better judgement the guy at the camera store talked me into it . There are more qualified sites and people on the internet that will give you great professional reviews of the camera and all it's features . Here is a few reasons I chose this one : I was contemplating between the XS , XSi or TSi . I did a lot of research online before making my decision and in the end the price won out and I settled for a less megapixels and less $ $ $ ( 10.1 is plenty for what I needed ) . Like all Canon DSLRs this camera takes great photos and the kit lens that it comes with is a great lens for a DSLR in this price range . The body is on the small side and people with large hands may find it uncomfortable if they are taking pictures constently . But the small size also has the benefit of better portability . Besides the picture quality , my favorite feature is that it comes with the software to control the camera and most of it's features right from your computer . I actually use this feature a lot , because I do product pictures and indoor still life with it . I can set all aspects of the shot , aperature , sharpness , shooting mode , white balance , etc , then control the shutter right from the computer . The picture loads right to my computer , I can examine the shot adjust the raw photo or make any adjustments necessary and retake the photo without relying on the small LCD screen on the camera . The liveshot helps even more because I can view the shot live as I am setting up before I take the picture . Other copmpanies charge more $ $ $ for this benefit . I like to use Raw format and make adjustments then convert it to a user friendly format . If your not familiar with the Raw format , it is worth your time to do some research and learn about it , your pictures will be much better .
    • 009 4  I owned a Nikon D40 and used it heavily for six months last year . I wanted to try Canon just to see what it was like . I'll compare to the D40 as I remember it : Pros : * Great image quality , low noise even at ISO 800 , nice bokeh , sharp - - seems to me to be better image quality than the D40 ( newer sensor and processor maybe ? ) * Nice features the D40 doesn't have like exposure bracketing , white balance bracketing , sensor cleaning * More physical buttons than the Nikon , so you can set e.g . ISO or white balance without going through menus * More auto-focus points * Feels really light weight Cons : * Menu system is fine , maybe better than Nikon's , but the controls just aren't as good as Nikon's . Especially as a left-hander , having almost all the buttons on the right felt so weird . * Feels cheaper , not as good a grip , too smooth . The rough pattern feel that other cameras has is much nicer to grip . * Noisier auto focus , sounds like grinding gears , it's awful * Live view mode is way too hard to access , like Canon was embarrassed by it ( but I don't use liveview anyway , so no big deal ) ( I returned the camera and bought a Nikon D3000 on Amazon instead . The ergonomics was a huge issue for me . ) My suggestion is to go to a physical store , try out the cameras in your hands and with your eyes ( viewfinder ) to see which * feels * right , then buy on Amazon . : - )
    • 011 4  Well , I have only had this camera for a few days , but I am very happy with it . The price is very reasonable and affordable. This also is my first SLR having owned several point and shoot film and digital . The only negative about this camera is the Live View . I see this as nothing more than a selling point aimed at point and shoot users . You cannot use the live view in full auto setting , you have to be in one of the manual settings . You cannot use the shutter button for auto focus ( read the review on dpreviews.com ) , I don't want to go into a long explaination here . The view finder is very easy to see and use for taking pics so I probably wont be using live view except maybe to compose a tripod shot , take it out of live view and take the shot. The 18 - 55mm IS kit lens is really a very good lens and I have no complaints about it ( well maybe the plastic mount ) . Focus is fast and the image stabilizer is great. The 18mm is a very good wide angle although the 55mm is not that great a zoom , I have the 28 - 135mm USM IS on the way and cain't wait to try it out . As I said I am very pleased with this camera and would recommend it to anyone wanting to make the jump from point and shoot to SLR's . Update 12 / 07 / 2008 After using this camera for a few weeks now I just wanted to add . I LOVE IT . I bought the 28 - 135 USM IS as a sorta replacement for the kit lens . I shoot mostly in the P mode with auto aperture , focus set on AI . I also shoot quite a bit of low light and I am amazed at the quality of the images ( I do set the ISO on 1600 or 800 ) I intially gave this camera 4 stars only because of the live view which still is ( in my opinon ) not all that great. So I will now give it 4 1 / 2 stars
    • 014 4  I recently purchased the Rebel XS as a Christmas present for my wife and myself , and we both love it . We mostly use the auto modes . We are not advanced photographers . We mostly just take pictures of our baby daughter . But it has done great for that . We love that when you press the shutter button , it take the photo immediately , unlike with point'n'shoots . And when I want to have more manual control , it is easy . For a beginner , it is everything we need and more . Can't comment on more advanced use because we don't know enough to use more advanced features : )
    • 018 4  I am looking for a camera with the following attributes : 1 ) Great indoor photo image quality . 2 ) Great ability to focus moving kids 3 ) Fast capture I tried several compact / prosumer cameras and none of them fulfill the need . So , I decided to try on DSLR . I compared Rebel XS , XSi and Nikon D60 . All 3 of them are really good and fulfill my needs . I picked Rebel XS because : 1 ) In amazon , with Canon $100 rebate , a Canon Rebel XS + Canon 75 - 300mm is only $520 . Very attractive price . Rebel XSi alone is $640 . I don't think as a beginner , the larger LCD , higher resolution , more focus points justify the cost difference . 2 ) Nikon D60 has similar pice as Rebel XS but it is made in Thailand . Rebel XS and XSi are made in Japan . So , I have used the camera to do the following which I can't do with a point-n-shoot before . 1 ) Indoor singing performance . With Full auto mode , the pictures are clear and sharp . The only issue is a lot of red eyes to fix even I turn on the red eye reduction lamp . 2 ) Indoor portrait . The picture with no flash is super ! The direct flash is too strong . I may need an external flash to help adjusting flash angle to make flash picture better . 3 ) Outdoor picture . Most of the point-n-shoot cammeras can do very good picture already . But with Rebel XS , the focus time and snap time are crazily fast . I can do continuous snap and pick the best easily . 4 ) This camera gives me great photo in Full Auto most of the time . You don't need to be an expert at all . Just hold still and press .
    • 019 4  Like the others ( or even you ) , I've done a lot of researches for the best DSLR for beginners . I've considered nikon D40 , nikon D60 , pentax K200D , and sony A300 . It's true to try the actual camera and see where you're most comfortable with helps , I went to Best Buy to do this . So why Canon XS , 3 key things that made me decide to get this one : First and foremost , the price . It's almost the same as the Nikon D40 ( other sites offer cheaper kits for d40 but you don't get the VR lens ) but more funtions , cheaper than the Nikon D60 and more functions . As compared to pentax and sony , this is definitely cheaper and more lens options . Second consideration is the fact that there is an adapter available in the market that can be attached to this camera so that it will be able to use nikon lenses . Try searching for Haoda . Third and last is the actual shooting tests . I tried this , nikon d40 / d60 , and sony a300 at best buy . Used auto settings for all cam and my shots came out best with the Canon XS . What's the drawback ? Sensors were removed in the XS model . Same sensors that is used for the remote shutter or for a flash to work away from the camera . No worries though , there are 3rd pary remotes that can work with the XS so you'll have remote shutter capabilities . As for the flash , you can always mount a flash that can work as the master flash ( disabling the light ) and have another flash as the slave flash so you have the same effect of having a flash work that is not connected on top of the camera . I'm really happy with my choice , no regrets . Whenever I pick it up , it makes me want to shoot anything just to see how great the pictures it'll produce . Be careful though , once you decide to buy this , spending starts for the accessories ( memory , bag , cleaner , lens , etc ) . As my friend would put it , ' don't think about it anymore , just buy it ! ' = )
    • 021 4  I purchased the Canon XS as a Christmas present for my wife . But after playing around with it myself , decided to return it and purchase the XSi instead . Three reasons why . . .1 ) 3 vs 2.5 display . I think this makes a big difference . I shoot semi-pro with some 40D bodies and appreciate the extra 0.5 of screen myself . 2 ) Spot metering . This feature is not on the XS and I really miss it since I tend to shoot in manual mode a lot . 3 ) The biggest reason is the proximity sensor for the LCD . This is huge ! I use the Rebels to shoot at night when I don't want to bring the big bodies . When shooting at night , the display on the LCD stays on with the XS ; on the XSi as your face gets close to the viewfinder , it shuts off , then turns on again after you move away from it . Shooting at night with the bright LCD is a big distraction . There are other differences such as the higher resolution and other stuff that really didnt factor in . If you're deciding on XS vs XSi , get the XSi . Now if you're going from P & S to SLR and need the very basics , then the XS will fit your needs perfectly . For those people , I would highly recommend the XS .
    • 022 4  The Canon XS has been heralded as the little brother of the Canon XSi , and both are considered good entry-level DSLRs . However , the XSi is much pricier than the oft-forgotten XS for such reasons as a couple more megapixels and a larger viewscreen , which is kind of a ridiculous reason to kick up the price two hundred dollars if you ask me . I purchased my XS a little under a year ago for six hundred dollars , and in the ten months I've owned it , it has proven its value time and time again . It is well-built , sturdy and compact but not excessively heavy , featuring simple controls , most of which can be adjusted while looking through the viewfinder . The image quality is great , though the kit lens is somewhat disappointing - for an extra bang to your photo I recommend the Canon 50mm f / 1.8 lens . Often the XS is overlooked in favor of the XSi , but in my opinion the concessions you make for the step down ( no spot metering , loss of two AF points , a slightly smaller viewscreen , two fewer megapixels , and the lack of a cool lowercase i ) are well worth the drop in price . My XS is serving me well and , I hope , will continue its terrific performance for many years .
    • 024 4  I think there are plenty of reviews here for someone to look at on the XS . Needless to say here is my opinion . I bought this camera as we have a new baby . Had this camera for about a week and can't stop taking photos . Simply excellent picture quality . I choose to go with the XS instead of the Xsi . After reading quite a bit , everyone says that the lense is the most important thing for teh camera . Save the $ $150 compared to the XSi and invest it in good lenses . For a starter like me , I felt that the XS was more than sufficient . And so far I have been happy . My primary purpose is indoor shooting . I would recommend the following additional items : 1 . F1.8 Canon 50mm lense - excellent for portraits . Great Depth of Field 2 . Flash with bounce / diffuser - the one with the cameras is pretty harsh if you are trying to take portraits . 3 . TelePhoto - I haven't got this yet but may be after I save some money . The only cons I would say on the camera - The build is not that great , a plasticky feel like other say . But , everything else is good .
    • 025 4  This camera is an excellent choice for those who are taking their first steps into serious ( SLR ) photography . The basic zones give comfortable starting point for new photographers ; selecting one of these puts the camera in full automatic mode , akin to a point-and-shoot camera . The XS also has plenty of room for a new photographer to grow with 4 pseudo-manual modes , and full manual . Each of these modes , particularly manual , allows for much greater artistic expression and control than the automatic modes . Another nice feature of the XS is the extremely low noise when using higher ISO values . I tend to keep my camera in ISO100 , but when I've needed to venture to ISO800 or ISO1600 , I've found very little need to post-process for noise . The XS works surprisingly well in low-light settings . By virtue of being a Canon camera , it comes with E-TTL 2 , which gives superb control of a hotshoe speedlight . The XS , like other Canon cameras , also has excellent lens support . When I was camera shopping , I brought along some old 35mm lenses just to see if they would work - one Nikon ( from 1977 ) and one Canon ( from 1979 ) . The Nikon ( which happened to be a D90 ) refused to work with my 28 - 200mm Vivitar lens . The XS , however , worked fine ; it accepted the fact that I was willing to work with a fully manual lens . That compatibility can be very useful if you have some old lenses around , assuming you're willing to manually set aperture and focus . The XS is very , very light . I'm not sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing . SLR cameras are inherently bulkier and heavier than point-and-shoot ; the super-light plastic shell on the XS leads me to believe that the case will most likely crack before the mirror gets knocked out of alignment . I do not recommend traveling with this camera without a good camera bag - this should be one of the first accessories you buy ( along with a UV filter ) . I do all of my photography in RAW , and use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CS4 for my post-processing , so I can't comment on the Canon software bundle . Do not let these reviews sway you between cameras ; rather use them as a starting point for going to the store to get a feel for the camera . Hold the camera , see how it feels in your hand , how it performs , etc and then decide what fits your needs best . I've found , at least in the case of the XS , that you can get it for 10% - 15% less than at a retail store . This camera has done nothing but impress me since I purchased it two months , and several thousand shots ago . The only other DSLR cameras I found in the amateur category that I found somewhat comparable were the Nikon D60 / D90s and the Canon XTi .
    • 029 4  It's a great camera , with a lot of features to learn . And I reiterate , you have to have a quite a bit of time to learn some of ' em . Perfect for someone who wants to start photography as a hobby . The stock 18 - 55mm IS lens is a good lens but I suggest getting a second lens . ( I went for the 75 - 300 Telephoto ) Make the second lens you choose be for what you need it to be though . Do some research .
    • 032 4  I am definitely a novice who just got tired of using compact pocket type digital cameras and getting bad pictures ( usually due to the shutter delay ) . I know nothing really about photography but I like the size and weight of this camera . Some reviews suggest it is too expensive for its features but for me the size , weight and supports SD memory were very important . Quality of the images are amazing ( well I think they are ! ) but I may need to tweak it a bit as the images are huge ( 3MB + ) . I am sure as I get better with photography I may start to notice deficiencies but in the meanwhile I am happy with my purchase .
    • 033 4  I am a professional videographer and artist and have been using Cannon products for 6 years now . I have never had a problem with a Cannon camera , and I have found that their design is to give YOU the control that you need , not what they assume you are going to use it for . This camera is intended for professional use , that is why it costs so much . You have control over pretty much anything and everything . It has an interchangeable lens . So you can use telephoto or macro ( or even fish eye . ) It has control over your autofocus nodes so that your target can be crisp and clear instead of your standard AF troubles . The SLR means that anything you see through the viewfinder is exactly what is going to be imaged . So , no more of those point-and-shoot head chopping issues . This is not a point and shoot . It lacks a lot of the useless junk . . . like the crummy video mode ( what is the point of that anyway ? ) and the other pre-installed features that assume you know nothing about photography or just don't care . With ISO mode used properly , you will never have another muddy dark picture ( unless you are shooting in perfect darkness ) or have those blasted-out living on the surface of the sun shots . At 10 megapixels , the quality is great . It is high enough that you could produce a poster size before it starts losing integrity . ( Higher mega-pixel cameras may come along , but this camera will age well . I estimate that you will get a good 10 years out of this before it is obsolete . ) I got this one because I did not want to pay for a bunch of features that I am never going to use . It is the lowest on Cannon's line of professional cameras , but it is a pretty darn good price . You can get an additional 2 Megapixels for $200 more . But if you are on a tight budget , definitely consider this camera . Note : Make sure you buy a UV filter . This isn't really for the UV protection but because it is a cheap way of protecting your lens from scratches . Get it , and put it on right away .
    • 035 4  I do a lot of travel and was looking for a lower cost DSLR to take with me . After reading reviews from [ . . . ] , dpreview and cnet , I decided to go with the Canon XS . I have no complaints about the ergos or the picture quality . My wife has the Nikon D60 and I consider this by far a better set up . The 7 point auto focus is a nice feature for the cost . The additional megapixels that you get with the xsi is not worth the cost in my opinion . The 2.5 screen is definitely small by today's standards , but I like the live view function ( as far as I know it is the only camera at this cost that has the Live View function ) . It seems that both the Nikons and the Canons low end SLRs are coming with the IS or VR lenses now . this is a nice feature , but it adds to the cost of additional lenses . Having the Stabilization technology in the body of the camera is something to consider if you will be purchasing multiple lenses . The mission for my camera only requires 2 lenses at most though . As far as picture quality and performance go ; we ran some basic tests against my wife's D60 . It was very different to see the difference in the ISO tests we did . We used people in dark lit situations ( more realistic than the scientific pics of cards you see on the research sites ) . They both are capable of about 3 frames per second which is fine for what we need , but a lot of cameras are capable of more today . The Canon beats it with the AF points and the overall feel and layout of the camera . Once you learn hoe to use the camera , both are capable of beautiful shots . I like having it in my bag for travel . It is lower cost so I'm not totally worried about it and it is sophisticated enough to handle any type of landscape or street shot that I come across without disappointing me . Obviously I recommend it as a travel camera , but if your looking for a good family and friend upgrade from a point and shoot or a tool to launch you into real photography , then this is a great buy .
    • 052 4  My Canons Rebel has broken twice . No lens communicates with the body . So I sent the lens first and it came back supposedly fixed . Two weeks later , kaput ! Then I sent it back with the body . . . and it's on its way back again . Now , look , Canon service is soooooooooooo nice they made it sooooooo easy for me to drop it off and pick it up it has not even sour my humor about the whole ordeal . I would buy Canon again solely based on their service . Real people phone calls , courteous , no questions asked . Just make sure you fill out those darn warranty forms ! ! ! The Rebel is NOT amateour friendly either as they proclaim . . . . you better know some SLR stuff if not , stick to a pocket camera .
    • 053 4  I spent weeks reading through both user and professional reviews and comparing it against similar 10 megapixel cameras , super zoom cameras and even 12 megapixel cameras and this one beat them all out hands down . Yes even the XSi of the same brand Not only is the price right but this an ideal camera for those just starting out in the DSLR world like me . The controls and menus are simple enough that you can start taking pictures just about out of the box . If you are feeling adventurous and want to get into the creative side of the dial those aren't all that hard to get a hang of either . Still this isn't the best part . The best part in my opinion is the spectacular image quality that comes out of an entry level DSLR . Even when you have to turn the ISO up the image doesn't have much noise . Sure it only has a 2.5 inch screen , a 7 point AF system and doesn't shoot that fast in raw but at least in my opinion those downsides are negligible .
    • 058 4  No baubles so far , and about 1000 images into ownership . I moved from a higher end Canon P + S into this Canon XS entry level SLR . On the point and shoot , I had about 20,000 images taken and saved . I expect to do the same with this Canon SLR . I'm trying to think of complaints . . . . and just can't . The battery was low one evening when I had charged it the day before , but I still managed 400 images of race car practice , many with flash , and the battery stayed with me the whole time . As for image quality . . . . it's why I moved into this kind of camera and the XS has not disappointed . My photos are getting serious wows from friends and blog readers , and requests for high def copies . Looking forward to more lenses , most especially a wide aperture prime for portraits . The kit lens does well at that , but so much more is promised with a 1.8 .
    • 059 4  The Canon Rebel XS is an incredibly nice intro for a post-point-and-shoot photographer . The manual is explained quite well ( even managing to simplify the concepts of f-stops and shutter speeds ) , and the camera itself is clever enough to generally get it right when set to Program ( auto ) mode . For a DSLR , the camera isn't overly heavy , and I haven't felt it to be cumbersome in the variety of shooting situations in which I've used it . The screen is a nice size , and the playbacks seem to mimic the color quality of the RAWs relatively faithfully . One of my few complaints is with the amount of software provided . While this may seem a bit silly , the number of programs seems superfluous , as many of the functions of one are echoed in another . With my first two or three file transfers , I was sometimes confused as to why or whether I needed three of their provided programs open at once just to view my images . Overall , the Rebel XS is a quality DSLR , and I'd recommend it to anyone starting out in serious photography .
    • 060 4  The 5 Star rating that I based upon is primarily from a great deal from Amazon that got free 75 - 300 zooms lens and a UV filter . You really can not beat this price . In terms of camera itself , it is really good entry digital SLR camera . Here's pro and con from novice users perspective : Pro : - Overall pictures quality . Better than most entry level digital SLR from other manufacturer . - Very low noise . - extremely light weight and compact size . - Good battery performance . You do not need an extra one . - Pretty good kit len . - Liveview although it is definitely not as good as many people has mentioned . It lags about half a second . Cons : - 2.5 LCD is ok but 3 is much better . I got spoil by 3 screen on SD880 which is an excellent wide angle camera . - IS on lens unlike Sony alpha . You almost always need tripod if you put 75 - 300 lens with no IS on . - ISO 1600 is definitely not as good as Nikon . - Vertical picture does not rotate back and forth when you move camera accordingly . It does rotate ( from vertical to horizontal ) but not the other way around when you move the camera vertically . Conclusion : If you plan to upgrade SLR camera 5 - 7 years from now , this should be your first Canon digital SLR camera . If you plan to use SLR for more than 7 years , I would suggest XSi . There will be a better and cheaper digital SLR camera . 7 years from now I'd expect HD video and full frame sensor from entry level camera . XSi VS XS The different in features between both camera worth about $100 . If you don't take RAW pictures ( 3fps-XSi and 1.5fps-XS ) , there is even less reason to get XSi .
    • 061 4  As an old Canon AE1 user ( still have it in the closet ) I switched to digital very early on . Upgrading about every 3 years to higher megapixels and greater zoom range . I got spoiled by live view standard with all point and shoots , so I resisted SLR until that feature became available . My last camera was a professional series Kodak P850 which had every feature of an SLR plus live view ( manual focus over ride , 12X optical Ziess lense , and more ) . My renewed interest started when Olympus launched live view on their SLR . Thought that was the way I would go until I compared the Canon side by side . The live view feature on the Canon is not as good or versatile as the Olympus but the other features to me , were better especially feel and handling . Canon offered SD media which was the standard of all my previous cameras and other electronics ( the Olympus had CF ) . My next delima was whether to go with the XS or step up to the XSi with larger LCD and 12 megapixel quality . I went with the XS on price and am extremely pleased . The ease of use and quality of photos are superb . I shoot mostly at 5 megapixels to conserve file size and they are excellent . File size is about 2 mg . Live view turned out to be no big deal . Once I got an SLR back in my hands after these many years , I found I enjoyed the view finder and even manual focus the way I go on most shots . Auto focus and live view are still there and good when you hand off the camera to someone else to click your family photos . The kit lense of 18 - 55 is very nice particularly for indoors but I am anxious to add a 55 - 250 as most of my shots are outdoors . The lense at 28 tends to bend the photo but does help in confined spaces . Very easy to use right out of the box . Full instruction book not a CD is very helpful . If you have hesitated like I did , buy the Canon with confidence . I am certainly happy with my decision and hope this helps .
    • 068 4  This was my first DSLR . I wanted to buy a high zoom camera back then but I realized that the size of the camera that I wanted to buy was almost the same as this one . So , I decided that I wanted the flexibility of having a camera that has an interchangeable lens system so I went for this . It's a very good first DSLR . I learned a lot with it , started in the P-mode , then graduated to Av-Mode . I got really good pictures from this and I was able to document significant memories in the early stages of my life with my wife . The pictures were great but I couldn't get anything really useable with shots taken beyond ISO 800 . The shot rate is slow so I couldn't follow shooting wild geese , but otherwise , I was able to get really good pics of my friend's then 4 year old son . I have now since replaced this with a Canon 7D and I've passed this on to a friend but I had great memories of this camera . Looking back , I regretted having given this up . It would've been a nice second , carry-everyday DSLR .
    • 077 4  This is one great camera ! You will not find a better SLR camera for the money . I just started playing in the world of SLR's and what a great camera to start learning on . I've already had many people who have seen my photographs tell me that they look like they were shot by a professional . This camera was also shipped to me really fast and I could not find it cheaper anywhere else ! Mike
    • 079 4  My first digital slr . Love it . Used to have a film Rebel G , so the learning curve on this one was pretty easy for me . I'm sure there are a million arguments for stepping up to the next dlsr in line , but I didn't see a reason for it . This is a MUCH better camera than the one I was replacing , so all the nitpicky little drawbacks ( only 7 autofocus points , only 1.5 fps in raw , etc . ) seem silly to me because they completely blow away my other cameras . I love this camera .
    • 081 4  As my first DSLR , I found Rebel XS very easy to use . After couple of weeks of playing with it I was able to use almost all advanced features . I'm no longer using the preset modes . I've noticed some difficulties with AF at low light , but , hey , you can always focus manual and for only $ 450 . . . . very good DSLR for the price . Great image . I would upgrade the kit lens with something with a wider aperture for low light pictures .
    • 083 4  Bought this for my mom to begin learning photography . I bought this a few days before Christmas and Amazon had it delivered on time with no problems . I may have waited to purchase a better camera for the price , but this one fit the bill and the time frame ! As for the XS it works well , with all of the drawbacks and perks of a entry level DSLR . This model is beginning to become obsolete with later models filling its spot . However if you decide to pick one up you won't be disappointed .
    • 085 4  Overall the Canon Rebel XS is a wonderful starter DSLR camera . I have always found the Canon lenses to be of the highest quality and giving good picture results . However , if this is your first digital camera or first DSLR camera - be prepared for a learning curve . The camera manual is well written and offers many useful tips for photography using this camera . The kit lens , 18 - 55mm , is a good starting lens . Later , if you desire , other lenses may be added for various shooting objectives . The price at Amazon makes entry into the DSLR field both easier and starts with a Canon a delight . • 091 4  This camera is overall excellent - great for the beginner photographer but enough advanced features for the more experienced . My only complaint is that the plastic body and knobs have a sort of cheap feel to them . Photo quality is excellent . Does not come with any memory flash card . Battery life is excellent .
    • 093 4  I finally took the plunge into the digital age and bought this Canon . I've several lenses from my older SLR Rebels and liked that they would work with this camera body . This camera is a perfect introduction to digital photography . The automatic modes almost do everything for you and pictures turn out great . The pictures I've taken so far in Manual have come out beautifully as well and there are plenty of options in the manual modes for experimentation ; my favorite is the sepia and b / w filters . It's been able to take pictures in lower light settings without a tripod than I'm used to with film SLRs ; the only drawback I haven't figured out yet is that it seems to lighten the scene ( spread the available light ? ) over the entire picture at times more than I would like for some shots . I haven't played around much with the metering though so that might be the fix . Thanks to my old computer , I did need the included software to download my pics to my PC . The pictures came out sharp with great color ( even with the kit lens ) and none of the dirt specks of film . I do wish I had purchased a lens strap ; I finally lost the cap somewhere in Las Vegas after four months of use . I haven't snagged another one yet from my other Canon kits , but one will probably fit since the ring size is the same . And I'll get a strap this time .
    • 095 4  I've owned the XS for a year now and continue to be amazed . I loved this camera from the word go , but as time goes on I am learning how to get the most out its limitations . First off I upgraded the lens . The kit lens is surprisingly good and light weight , but I prefer the 17 - 40 f4.0 L . Shooting RAW gives you a lot of flexibility if you are processing in Lightroom or Photoshop , especially with the poor light balance performance ( incandescent light is yellow ) . The body is small and compact , too small for my large hands , so I augmented it with a battery pack . This made a huge difference and provided extra stability . I also recommend an upgrade to the onboard flash . The 430EX II speedlite is a great fix to that . Spend your money on good lenses , this camera is great starter if you are accustomed to fully manual film SLRs , as I am .
    • 097 4  First please note , this is a low-end DSLR , which means it's not for Pros . This is my first DSLR , got it for a month . The image quality definitely pops . I've been mostly using the full auto mode and they already look amazing . it has plenty of manual controls . A few things that are slightly disappointing are that the ISO only goes up to 1600 and my point-and-shoot type camera goes up to 3200 , and it does not shoot video of any kind ( the new rebel shoots 1080p video , it's about twice the price of this one ) . But after seeing the improvement in image quality , it is all worth it ! I can take a picture of a random thing around the house and it looks better than real life ! Pros : - Price ( only about $100 more than a high-end point-and-shoot ) - Picture Quality - Shooting speed ( no more waiting between pictures ! ) - Battery Life ( only charged it once so far , still no need to recharge yet . I've taken about 300 pictures , about 25% of them with flash , and that includes an 1 - hr shooting session on the beach without turning off the camera ) - All the manual control a beginner needs - OSD ( clear on screen display you can virtually start without reading the manual ) - Live-view helps taking pictures at an angle or position you cannot look into the viewfinder ( though some shortcoming associated with it , read ' cons ' ) Cons : ( which are all compensated with the low price ! ) - NO video capture of any kind - Live-view isn't what I thought it was ( I thought it was like a point-and-shoot style digital camera's display , but if you're using autofocus , you will need to focus with live-view OFF and then turn on live-view , because with it on , the camera loses its autofocus function ) Bottom Line : If you love photography and is a beginner and you don't care about video capturing , don't think , buy the Rebel XS kit ! ! !
    • 102 4  I have had my Rebel 1000D XS for a few months now and have fallen in love with it . I have been a great photo enthusiast for a long time now ( 20yrs . ) and felt it time to take it serious . I'm sure that I will be upgrading in the near future but not because this camera cannot do the job . It has a great list of features and I have had no problems with it at all . I purchased it new and shortly afterwards have purchased a 55 - 250 IS lens for it and now my field of use has widened . There is a few things that I'm sure could have been different on this model such as more AF points and the rubberized coating but for the price it's a great bargain . I have since my purchase become a semi-pro photographer working for a friend and her company photographing daycare's and some other get togethers . I work part-time now for her and I simply love the fact that it has turned into something that I love and can make money at . It don't get any better than that . sid
    • 110 4  I recently upgraded to the Canon Rebel XS from a Canon 35 mm camera , and I love it . The picture quality is amazing , and the camera works well with my 5 year old telephoto lens . I would highly recommend this camera for those who are just starting out , or would like to learn more about photography . It's been my hobby for many years , and now that I have a digital camera I can experiment more with the manual settings ( experimenting with a film camera can get quite expensive ! ) . My only objection is the live view mode - it only works when you are in the creative modes , not the automatic settings . This is not a huge deal , as you just look through the view finder . I do like to see on the LCD screen the picture as I'm getting ready to take it , but again , this is minor in comparison to all the wonderful features of this camera !
    • 113 4  I am new to DSLR world and this is my first SLR camera . It is amazingly good : ) . I bought it because I was planning for a cruise to Alaska and the buy was worth it . Took around 1000 photos and they all turned well . The ' basic-options ' are really simple to use and with some minimum ' users manual ' reading you will be a pro with the advanced-options . I found the buttons very easy to use . I got the best price at Amazon and also got the prime shipping benefit : ) . The battery lasted for 3 - 4 days during the cruise with a single charge , even after continuously using it . You get so many lens options with Canon which is another good thing . I didnt find any issue with this camera and I would recommend it to all beginners .
    • 116 4  The XS is an excellent quality camera for the price ( I paid $477.44 ) . But read the fine print because you may be sacrificing a feature that is really important to you . Here is what you are sacrificing for a substantial price reduction : 1 ) video , 2 ) a slightly larger screen , 3 ) spot metering , 4 ) no IR sensor ( so you can't use a wireless remote ) , 5 ) a nicer grip . To me those things weren't that big of a deal , and I was better served putting the $ $ $ into buying lenses , etc . Do not take for granted the lens that is included in this kit . Very useful .
    • 119 4  I've read thru ' many reviews about rebel XS and see tons of people have troubles with error 99 and its auto focus system . Mine doesn't have these . I've played with this for a while , with kit lens , of course . . . For its auto mode ( basic zone ) , I shot 1000 photos in various condition and was able to archive the ratio 90% success which means only 100 photos were deleted due to blur , under / overexpose or out of focus . No dout that rebel XS has a strong auto mode , a nice start for newbie like me . And sometimes , the pro may say : Trust your camera couldn't hurt . The only annoying thing I had is its auto focusing but it happened with first 200 photos before I can get used to it . I know you can do the same . Don't just blame the camera .
    • 121 4  I've had my canon XS for about a month , and I'm in love with it . I upgraded from a Canon point-and-shoot after becoming more serious about photography . I researched for quite a while , and I found that while the XSi seemed to be the best choice for a first DSLR , the price difference didn't make the jump seem worth it . ( I'm a poor college student and I wanted / needed a camera for a class , so I didn't have a lot of money to save up . ) One of my flatmates and another friend both have canon XSi's that I've played around with , and I can honestly say that I'm just as pleased with mine . The other reviews make extensive notes on the features , so I won't bother with that , but I will say the only drawback ( well , to any canon product ) is the software . If you have a Mac , don't bother using it and import through iPhoto .
    • 129 4  This is my first DSLR since the days of film and the AE1 . I owned various Canon point-and-shoot models and it was time for an upgrade . After many weeks of researched , I decided to go with the XS model and I am sooo glad I did . My other options was the XSi or the Nikon D60 . However , the features and price Won me over . This is an excellent camera for beginners as well as advance photographers . It is easy to learn and the photo quality and saturation are just perfect . Go out buy it and shoot , shoot , shoot !
    • 131 4  Great camera , feels good in my and wife's hand , great pictures and it is really easy to use . After owning 5 point and shoot cameras , transition to Canon Rebel XS was truly a breeze . Ordered it on 21 December and it arrived on the 24th just is time for great pictures at the Christmas dinner table . What else could i ask for . Thank you Amazon and Cameta Camera for offering this camera at such great price ! Local Sears had it on sale for $599 !
    • 136 4  After damaging my second Canon AE - 1P in the middle 1990 ' s , I switched to an entry level digital camera that did not always satisfy my needs . However , my new Canon Rebel EOS XS not only satisfies my needs for a competent camera , but it blows away anything I have ever even tried in a comparable price range . My expectations were more than satisfied . With my old Canon AE - 1P's , I had to take 14 - 20 rolls of 35mm film with me whenever I went overseas , along with an extra battery - - - just in case . And the cost of developing and printing all those photos was a real budget beater . And with our 5.2 mp entry level digital camera , while it was easy to recharge it in its own camera dock , nevertheless , the recharging dock was somewhat bulky , and we had to take a number of memory sticks with us or be careful that we had enough exposures left to get all the photos we wanted . However , my new Canon Rebel EOS XS came with its own battery recharger ( a fraction of the size of a single deck of playing cards ) , and the 4 GB memory ( purchased locally ) is way beyond comparison with everything I had tried previously . We took the new camera on vacation , a few weeks ago , and were blown away by its performance . It made no difference whether we had day light , low light , or no light . The functions and variable ISO settings were more than enough to handle anything from bright light to low light , and the pop up flash took care of everything in the dark . . .
    • 140 4  Anyone who buys this camera thinking that this will solve most of your photographic ills is sorely mistaken . The camera is user friendly and has automatic functions . If I have a problem with the automatic functions , it would be that it quickly opts to the flash mode in low light settings . I'll write more later .
    • 141 4  I just wanted to make a small review for the average Joe to read , mainly cause I know all the camera guy lingo and myself would rather just have a point black Yes or No . So in a word , Yes . If you're thinking about grabbing this camera , do it , especially with the kit lens , it's a very nice lens for a kit anyway ; you'll be able to do a lot with just that lens alone . That's without touching in the camera , it does almost everything it's big brothers can do , with a lower price tag ! So yes , buy it , use it , love it . I do .
    • 149 4  Great camera , specially considering the price . Some say that this is harder to use than the Nikon D3000 , but it took me just 5 minutes and some 20 pics to get used to the manual controls . After that , you get really good quality image , sharp pictures , and very good results in low light . Some tips : forget about the live view , it's just useless . Avoid using high iso modes , since it makes a lot of noise for values over 400 ( but this is just like any other camera within this price range ) . Be really carefull when using the manual focus mode , because there will be a lot of pictures that will look great in the lcd screen , but on bigger screen will look totally out of focus . Over all , it's a great camera , and after trying a friend's Nikon D3000 , I think this is the best choice if you are looking for my first dslr , just like I was two months ago .
    • 156 4  In my humble opinion , any beginner to intermediate photographer cannot go wrong with this camera . I may not have the experience like some but I will say this : As a father of 4 , I have no problems getting great shots of my family at any activity . Be it indoors or out , low light or in the sun , my pictures are 90% fantastic . The other 10% is my own error ( rushing the shot , moving , etc . . . ) . It is easy to setup , takes a little more time to understand all of the features but by no means impossible . Requires a little patience and understanding ( like any new device ) . I purchased the telephoto lens , battery grip , lens covers and speedlight and I just love the quality , speed and ease that I have to enjoy these precious moments . And with the help of Photoshop , even little mistakes disappear . All of this for an investment of less than $1,000 . In these times when dollars are a little harder to come by , I found this to be a great value and extremely satisfying .
    • 174 4  I am quite impressed with this camera . I purchased it to replace my lost Fuji S5200 . All the features are great and I expect many years of great pictures with this camera .
    • 180 4  This is my 1st DSLR cameras . I used to point an shoot cameras only . Even though it is easy to use and simpler than you think . Live view feature is helping me a lot .
    • 186 4  I had been waiting for waiting for this camera to reach a price I could afford , and it finally did . It was worth the wait . It operates similar to the 35mm film version , and is extremely fast compared to the point-and-shoots I have been using for the last 10 years or so . This is not the latest and greatest that Canon currently makes , but it does what I need it to do .
    • 190 4  I'm a rank beginner in the world of photography and am definitely happy with my purchase of this camera ! I picked it based on the ( relative ) simplicity of the features , cost , and size / shape . If you are debating between a Nikon and Canon , like I was , I would suggest going to a Best Buy or a camera shop and holding the cameras themselves . Nikons always seem to be a bit cheaper , but I found that they didn't fit in my hands as well and that their menu systems were less intuitive ( for me , anyways ) . This is a great camera , though , and I would definitely recommend checking it out if you're looking to get a DSLR .
    • 196 4  I bought this camera from Amazon directly . My camera appears to have been returned as it was repackaged , which is something I do not care for . I will keep what appears a decent machine , but am wondering what may ( ? ) be wrong with it ? It is likely I will not use Amazon for such a purpose in the future . Let the buyer beware , methinks .
    • 202 4  This was a fantastic improvement over the features and functionality in a Canon PowerShot SX20IS we originally tried . My wife was a film photography enthusiast while in Art school and she really enjoyed getting her hands back into the field with this very entry level DSLR camera . Initially , we were really impressed with the camera . It feels solid , the controls felt good , the image quality was fantastic , though the kit lens leaves a lot to be desired . As we got more experience taking photos and learning the controls and effects of different settings , we became disenchanted with the review screen on the back of the camera . There's nothing wrong with the screen for most uses , but there were multiple shots that looked well focused on the review screen ( due to it 230k pixel resolution and 2.5 size ) but were in fact slightly out of focus . We decided to make a switch to the Rebel T1i that has a review screen of 3 with almost 4x the resolution . We found no issues in using a 10 MP camera as this image size is more than sufficient for most Prosumers or Amateurs . My wife was also frustrated ( though I don't think there's a remedy for this ) that the viewfinder only shows 95% of the actual image . She has a fantastic eye for framing shots and gets it looking just right in the viewfinder only to find that when it's downloaded to the computer , there's a little something extra in the shot that wasn't visible in the viewfinder . As I checked the full lineup of Canon cameras , this seems to be the nature of the DSLR world . While we did understand that the LiveView screen shows exactly what the sensor gets , my wife is old school viewfinder and the AF doesn't work as nicely in LiveView . I would recommend that if you want any sort of zoom functionality beyond maybe 2x , that you purchase the camera body only and invest the difference in a good quality zoom lens . For regular 50 mm type shots , we found the Canon EF 50 mm f / 1.8 II lens to be a great price with a great aperture range . My wife despises the look imposed on a photo by a flash , so a lens with 1.8 aperture allowed her to take indoor shots of family events in really crummy light that turned out great . I would strongly recommend this product for beginning photography students and for anyone that wants more than a point and shoot , but doesn't want to spring the extra $200 - $1000 for the next few entries in the canon line of budget dslr .
    • 204 4  I'm still learning about all of the camera's possibilities . Got some great stop-motion pictures of small birds and dogs . Picture quality is excellent . I did a lot of research before I bought this camera . I don't find the focus dots to be a problem . I like the controls on the right side , they're easy to operate and the camera fits my hand just fine . There were a few reviews talking about the camera getting damp and never operating again . To prevent condensation , I follow the Canon recommendation of removing the lens from the body when coming in from the cold to a warm room . I've even done it ( carefully ) after getting back into a warm car . The camera and lens don't take long to warm up . This is one of the lightest dSLRs on the market , a real plus when adding a telephoto lens .
    • 225 4  I got this camera a couple weeks ago and all the pictures I've taken have left me ( and everyone I know ) highly impressed . No complaints . Great camera for the price !

  • 031 4  I debated on getting this or the XSi , and went with this . It's 100 bucks cheaper , and this was my first DSLR . I didn't need the bigger screen or the extra MP . What I don't like about this camera is the fact it won't accept a wireless shutter remote . Other than that , I am happy with my first DSLR . If you were to get a DSLR just to replace your point and shoot or your first DSLR , this is your camera .
    • 096 4  if you are a new to slr cameras , this is perfect for you . you may see the rebel xsi and want to get that one , but don't . get this one . save your money on the camera and invest in the lenses . 10 vs 12 MP isn't that big . buy the xsi if you want to print poster sized . all in all , great price with great results .

  • 055 4  We're very happy with this camera . We are beginners as far as photography is concerned , and there is plenty to keep us busy learning with this camera . The menu is pretty user-friendly - I was playing around with settings and able to understand what I was doing within the first little bit . The battery is great - charges quickly and lasts a long time . The camera feels well-built but is not too heavy . It's a great size , easy to carry around . Probably my most favorite things about it are how quickly it turns on and is ready to shoot pictures , and how fast it is in between pictures - I can take pictures over and over as fast as I want . Also , picture quality is awesome . For example , I took a picture of my husband and son at the base of a waterfall we had hiked up to . When we reviewed the pictures and zoomed in on the waterfall , we discovered that the camera had captured detail on hikers way up the side of the waterfall that you can't even see in the picture at full size . Overall , we're very very happy with this camera , and if we had to do it all over again , this would be the one we picked . It arrived very quickly with everything well packaged . We couldn't be happier !
    • 034 4  This camera is definitely a must-have for anyone who cares about the visual quality of their pictures . It can be adjusted to be as creative or simple as you want it to be , and it's easy to learn how to use on the creative side . I spent a good 2 hours going through the functions and settings , and then just starting playing with it . I used it a lot over the holidays , and I'm learning how to compose my pictures and take better looking shots with just a couple of quick adjustments on the fly . The price and accessories included with this in the kit make it a must have purchase , which will be a good long-term investment . I highly recommend buying a good telephoto lens as well , because the kit lens is only good to about 30 yards . All in all , this is a great value and investment .
    • 051 4  Love love this camera ! We get compliments all the time on our pictures and have also taken pics for others even though I am by no means at all a professional photographer . . . not even close , very amateur . The camera does all the work .
    • 103 4  I buyed this camera for my wife . She is a professional photografer and she loves it . She really likes the image quality , the features and the weight . The night and the low light images are great . We think the Zoom with the default lent is so short . We had to buy a new lent for the long-distance images .
    • 105 4  It takes a little time to learn how to perfect my pictures but honestly I loved even the very first pictures I took . I recommend this camera to all the new couples and new mommies and daddies because recording every moment should be done the right way .
    • 112 4  I've used this camera for several months now and do not have any complaints . It is lightweight and easy to use . Picture quality is superb .
    • 114 4  I agonized for months about getting this camera , the Rebel XSi or just getting another point and shoot . I have never used a DSLR and was afraid that it would be too complicated . However , I can honestly say purchasing this camera was the best decision I've made . After doing some research , the XSi was not very different from the XS . In past reviews a lot people said get the XSi but at the time , the price difference was nominal . Now that the XSi is about $150 more than the XS , purchasing the XS was a reasonable choice . I highly recommend this camera if you are new to DSLR .
    • 182 4  This is my first slr , it is good , the quality is high , easy to use ; I recommend for first users !
    • 218 4  The product is just as described and arrived very quick in great condition . Thanks to the highly reliable seller , Amazon .
    • 221 4  High quality , simple to use , yet loaded with various features to explore . An ideal purchase for those looking to break away from the point-and-shoot crowd .
    • 224 4  This camera is ideal for the first time user . It is user friendly . Although I would say that I did take a mini course and maybe that helped a bit , too . The camera is in top condition and I bought it less than retail value . What a bargain !
    • 227 4  I love this camera . I feel like a professional photographer . It is really great and it takes the true color of the things you photgraph with it . I would recommend it to any one . .

  • 057 4  Having taken this to the Caribbean and taken a lot of pictures , I now feel I can rate this camera . I'm coming off a point and shoot to the DSLR , so I had a lot to learn , but found it easy and enjoyable . I checked it out for size and weight before buying it , comparing it to Sony A series and Nikon D40 and D60 . I think it beat both in those two areas . It carried easily through the jungles of Jamaica and Cozumel . It took great pictures while slightly swaying on a cruise ship and the pictures came out very clear . It even went to Hell and back ( the Bahamas ) and was such a good camera . I did all this on a 9 day trip and barely used any of the power in one charge of the battery . Learning to size the pictures down to a 5x7 format for emailing took me a little time , and having to do it for every picture I'll want to send may be a little irritating , I still think that the clarity and detail will make for very good large-size prints . I love how the portrait setting took such good shots of my grandkids and friends , giving their skin a beautiful quality . All in all , a wonderful camera I'll have fun learning inside and out .
    • 026 4  I stewed for quite a while trying to decide between the XS and the XSI . They are pretty similar , with the XSI having a few advanced features , like the larger screen and the obvious increase in MPs . In the end I decided on the XS under the justification that the 40% price increase over the XS ( $700 vs $500 ) just wasn't going to yield the same in added benefits . I was right . The camera bodies deliver such similar results that the $200 difference would be much better spent on better optics . While I was satisfied with the kit lens at first I quickly upgraded to a 50mm 1.8 and was stunned by the results ( at $90 it's probably the best investment you could make for a lens ) . Overall this is a great starter camera and opens up a whole new world of professional looking pictures to the first time DSLR user . Don't get caught up in the megapixel war . . . 10MPs is plenty to yield good results . I know professionals who are using 1D MkIIs with 8MP and getting far better results than a rebel will ever get . If you're in the market for a DSLR for anywhere around this price , buy the XS and use the savings to buy some toys for it .
    • 027 4  I just started getting into photography and wanted to get a good DSLR but i could not afford to spend over $500 . I did a lot of research and came across this camera and no matter where i looked it has great reviews . This is a great camera i think for beginners and people who do this as a hobby like myself ! the manual that comes with it is very useful . The lens that comes with the Kit it also great . I did some macro type photos and they came out great . The features are easy to use . I would defintely recommend this camera !
    • 066 4  i just bought my camera yesterday with the speculation that i have 30 days to return it if i decide that i dont like it . i was trying to decide between getting this one and a nikon d3000 . i took my camera ( this one - canon ) out to a contesting horse show today ( barrel racing , etc ) to try it out . i am ( i think ) a decent photographer , except i occationally have a little blurriness in high action photos , so i wanted to make sure that whichever DSLR i chose would be good at taking fast action as well as still pictures . i must admit , i am sold on this canon ! it has done everything i have asked of it wonderfully without blurring . i wasnt to crazy about the 18 - 55mm lens at first , due to the fact that i have only used zoom lenses thusfar but it did well . i am planning to get additional lenses when i get some more money , and looking forward to it .
    • 127 4  I purchased this camera for my Daughter as a Christmas present . She wanted a digital SLR because she believed she would have more creative latitude with a changeable lens and wanted the 10 + MP . I bought this particular camera because I had reviewed the Canon manual for this model on line before I decided on a manufacture brand and was instantly reminded why I am biased towards Canon ; ease of use , intuitive to understand , competitive price and reliable ( well , we will see ) . I had a Canon AE - 1 that lasted over twenty-five years with very few problems . Hope this one gives us the same joy and reliability . Ordering and delivery was fast and uneventful , just what I was hoping for .
    • 176 4  If you are debating to XS or Xsi , go for an XSi and pick a bigger lens too . . the 18 - 55mm works great , which is sufficient for domestic purposes . . but we buy a DSLR for outdoor shooting is it ? so look for 300mm max one is great and not that costly either . . . finally it depends on what you are using it for . . but as many blogs said this is a next level cam after point and shoots Corns : There is not video mode to record a video . . .
    • 200 4  The Canon Rebel XS is a nice starter digital SLR camera . Takes great pictures and has many useful features , which I am still learning how to use . The camera is not too heavy and it seems to be sturdy in its construction . This particular brand / model seemed to come highly recommended from various sources , and so far , I am very pleased with it ! The price ( at least on Amazon.com ) was really good too !
    • 214 4  This was my Christmas present to me , and so far I have been absolutely thrilled with this camera . I will need more experience to figure out all of the settings , manual operation , and ( blast , actually have to read the instruction manual : P ) . However , the intuitive features , fast responding lens and overall feel of this camera are even more than I expected . I am sure I will get many wonderful experiences with this camera in the future , so thanks to Canon for making such a great entry level dSLR !
    • 222 4  We bought this 4 months ago from Amazon for $500 . It came with the kit lens 18 - 55mm ( I think ) . This was our first step to SLR . Sure enough , it produced wonderful pictures of landscape , close-ups and portraits .

  • 071 4  This is my first DSLR camera . I am a relative novice , so I will not try to convince of of anything technical . I will just say that I really like this camera . I took advantage of the deal Amazon has on the zoom lens , and I also bought a 50mm prime . So far these are all I have needed . The images this camera creates are great . The camera takes a little figuring out , but it is pretty powerful . High ISO noise isn't bad at all . I am very satisfied with this camera and the deal at Amazon .
    • 192 4  This is my first DSLR . I really like it because it's easy to use if you're a beginner and it has some nice features if you want to get into serious photography . The colors in my photos are great and my photos are very crisp and clear . I think the kit lens is fantastic , though I do plan on purchasing a telephoto lens in the near future . I'm still learning about this camera , but so far it is everything I was looking for .

  • 099 4  I was going back and forth whether to purchase a DSLR camera that is more than a point n shoot as a non professional and I absolutely love this camera . I wanted a camera that I can take pictures of my baby and not miss that smile . The point n shoots are too slow and I have no pictures of her smiling - well I can not say that any longer - I am able to capture all the smiles . The camera handles wonderful and I have no complaints . I bought this camera on a special day from Amazon and was able to save more money . I would recommend this camera to anyone that wants to move away from the point n shoot and be able to capture all the important memories .
    • 041 4  I love this camera ! I was getting really annoyed with my old point and shoot because I couldn't get the quality photos that I wanted . For someone who is getting their first DSLR I would totally recommend this camera .
    • 043 4  Great camera . I am new to the SLR world , but this one proves to be a fantastic product for an SLR beginner . Definitely a good buy .
    • 123 4  This is a perfect SLR Camera for those who are not professional . I had a lot of excellent pictures taken from it in my winter vacation .
    • 130 4  This camera was purchased for a trip to Africa and it was well worth the investment . There were no issues with it and the pictures were great . The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't change the default settings of some of the features . If you want to do something like bracketed shots you have to reset it every time you turn it on or change a lens .
    • 146 4  This is my first digital SLR camera . I didn't know many options and took me over a day to go thru the manual and try different options . Well worth the money .
    • 198 4  I absolutely love this camera . The only way to get it better is to pay more : it'd be nice to have the DIGIC 4 , but that's not what this package is offering .
    • 220 4  I waited a long time before buying this camera , looked up all the pros and cons . I am so glad I bought it , it is worth the wait . I love the picture quality and ease of use . I bought a book and a lens also to get the most out of the camera but I was able to use it right from the box since I have always had a Canon . The quality of the photos is amazing and I have taken some great shots already . If you are thinking of buying it I say go for it .

  • 120 4  I really wnted a digital camera that would be good for a beginner and wouldn't have to be abandoned as my skill set grew , and this is it . It is simple to understand and use right out of the box and even easier to learn to use more efficiently . I've already added and extra lens to get even more out of it . I've priced this camera through several other sources , both online and off , and I've yet to find anywhere that offers a better price for the whole package . I recommend this camera to everyone .
    • 178 4  This has been a great little camera . It is not for the professional as the professional may want more out of a camera . Lightweight , easy to use and great photos in almost any kind of light . This is a great first camera for someone just getting into digital .

  • 124 4  This is my first digital slr camera purchase . Many years ago I used to use a 35mm film camera . After using a point and shoot digital camera , I decided to upgrade to a slr . I read lots of reviews and went back and forth between purchasing the rebel xs or the xsi . So far I am glad I went for the xs . I have been using the camera for a month and it seems to have everything that I need . The photo quality was my priority for a budget camera and the xs delivers . I am a small female and the camera seems to fit just fine in my hand . The button placements were awkward at first for me but have gotten a lot more comfortable with them . The live view seems dark and just not very useful to me except on a rare occasion . All in all , I think this camera meets the needs of those that don't want to or can't spend a lot of money , but want excellent photographic results .
    • 069 4  I like this camera a lot . Great pictures and very fast response . Up to 3 pictures a second and only a split second start-up time even after recovering from sleep mode .
    • 075 4  I bought this camera a year ago from Amazon and have absolutely loved using it . I was able to learn a lot about the creativity modes on this camera but for those of you that don't have a big interest in learning this , if still comes with the different auto settings that all Point and Shoot cameras come with . I think that this would be a great gift for someone that is wanting to learn photography without a huge price tag . Then they can always upgrade later on if and when they out grow this one . Canon's Rebel line has been pretty awesome on adding features that the prosumer's cameras have but without the big price tag . So save yourself a little money and get a great camera !
    • 109 4  Love , Love , Love this camera . Can't believe the quality , it is well worth the price .
    • 115 4  I bought this camera because I was starting to get interested in photography and I got it within a few days with expedited shipping . This camera takes great pictures without flash . With the flash , the shutter speed is astounding ! It also takes very detailed photos . All my photos turn out great on the computer and on paper . If you are just looking for a point and shoot and are not that serious , don't get this camera . But if you are really interested in photography , this is a great beginning camera !
    • 133 4  I didn't have nor wanted to waste the extra money on the xsi . Spend your money on nice lenses . That is what will make the big difference in your photos not the body so much . Not much else to say , it's a Canon . Can't go wrong with it .
    • 168 4  Love the camera , love the pictures however the auto focus stopped working whitin the first month and I returned the camera . I trust Canon and will purchase another one local so I won't have to mail it in case something goes wrong .
    • 216 4  I purchased this camera a few months ago . I love it . If you are looking for a nice camera to take pictures of your family , friends , pets , home , etc . This camera is perfect ! I love the pictures & although I'm still learning all the tricks , its easy to use and understand . I have recently bought a higher quality lens and some other accessories that I think will take my photography to the next level , but don't feel like you need to buy accessories because it works great as is . I HIGHLY recommend this camera !

  • 144 4  This camera has changed my opinion of clunky bigger cameras . I use to think that I did not want to carry that big of a camera . I always chose the smaller digital pocket ones . With the small ones I did not get the features I needed or wanted . This digital Canon Rebel XS has it all and is light weight and so easy to use . I get high quality photos everytime especially of my cats . The red eye feature is wonderful as my cats have blue eyes and now I can see that in the photos . With the smaller pocket ones I always got red eyes even when I set it at that feature . I highly recommend this digital camera .
    • 087 4  This is our first step leaving the point and shoot world . We were pretty worried about making the transition , as neither my wife nor I have any DSLR experience . However , just the automatic settings on this camera make your pictures look phenomenal . We are still exploring the manual features but the auto features alone make it worth the purchase . We highly recommend this camera .
    • 151 4  I have owned this camera for several months and really enjoy it . The only downfall I can see is the flash unit on the camera . A friend allowed me to use his attachable flash and what a difference . Other than that it takes great pictures nad is fairly easy to use even for beginners like me .

  • 147 4  I have never owned a camera aside from a cheap cellphone before this , and have always been interested . After weeks of research and asking around online , I've been directed too this camera , which I heard was the same as the new updated XSI , only difference was few features and a smaller screen . I've owned this camera for around a year and a half , no problems , and still takes pictures as good as day 1 . The camera is really easy to use , and really user friendly . It is extremely easy to use , and has preset modes that you can automatically take decent photos with if you aren't yet good enough changing the aperture or ISO . The lens included is a basic 18mm - 55mm , which is pretty good and offers image stabilization and auto focus , which both come in handy if you are a beginner or intermediate and can't quite get your pictures to come out clear . As you learn the tricks and features behind this camera and can soon work your way out of using the preset modes , into using the more advanced modes , you may want to upgrade the default lens , as it isn't the best for more advanced pictures , but I'll explain in more detail on the actual amazon page for the lens . You will be satisfied with how good the pictures and lens this camera comes with , and some pictures I've taken actually look like they are textbook / magazine worthy , and that's just with using the default settings . There are a lot of custom shooting modes you can put this camera in if you want more vivid colored pictures , or just black and white . You can change a lot of things , as well as use certain shooting modes that work better for moving things , as well as better for capturing objects with more depth . You might want to get the book Canon XS for dummies , which will go into more detail than the manual about all the specific features , what they do , and break this camera up piece by piece until you know what everything is and when the best time to use each piece is . I can't really explain what is best since it depends on what you're shooting and if you are a beginner , you may want to stick with the default modes , as they take really good casual pictures and you don't have to mess around with the settings . How do you know which default to use ? Well I think its obvious , theres standard , obviously standard settings , close up , if you are taking a close up picture of a flower or object , night shot , obviously used under low light settings , and no flash , obviously if the lighting is too high to use flash . That brings us to flash , the built in flash is great for close up shots where lighting is average to low , but is pretty weak when you get farther back then 10 feet and becomes quite useless unless you are taking a night shot . I suggest removing flash if you are taking a medium distant shot in adequate lighting . Otherwise , you may want to but a portable flash that you can attach if you're looking for a wider range , and more efficient flash . This camera overall , is really good and can be used with most modern lenses . Canon makes some really great lenses , and even look at the ratings , this camera might not be the best for an expert , but for a beginner / intermediate who wants to get the most for a low price , this camera delivers much more quality than what you pay for . Don't let the price fool you either , it is really good and will satisfy you in terms of features and quality , and with the right lenses , is capable of taking magazine worthy photos . Don't spend more on another camera when you don't have to .
    • 132 4  I've been doing so much research on this camera . Then , I was waiting for three weeks , hoping the price would drop . It did ! At 459.95 , it is a great price for this wonderful DSLR . If you are a beginner like myself and want a great performing camera for an inexpensive price , I highly suggest getting this over the XSI . Don't hesitate ! Get it now ! Oh , and the lens that comes with it is amazing especially with the Image Stabilizer .
    • 164 4  In my family we've just used the point and shoot variety of digital cameras , but when my daughter began talking a strong interest in photography we upgraded . Now it's hard to be satisfied with my point and shoot when I see the pictures she gets from this camera . Looks like I am going to be upgrading too .

  • 158 4  This is the third Canon rebel that I have owned in the past 10 years , I started in the pre-digital age with a film version . I really love this camera , it works for everything I need it to do . I am taking a photography class and this thing does all the ' tricks ' needed to complete assignments , but it is also my go-to camera to use as a point and shoot with the premade settings . I like that the screen on the back is larger than my older Rebel , much easier to take a peek at what I've got . I have had no problems at all with programming or using this camera . Until I have finished photography school and actually open my own business and get a large frame camera , like a 5D , I will be sticking with the Rebel .
    • 134 4  I ordered this camera on a Monday night , with the free shipping it came Thursday afternoon . This is such an awesome upgrade from my 35mm Rebel Ti . Love at first sight , I would recommend this for anyone looking !
    • 152 4  I bought a Rebel XS in transition from film to digital photography . It is a great way for beginners and advanced users to enter the digital realm . It takes decent pictures with the included kit lens and is very easy to use . It has a ton of features and prepared me to step up to the semi-professional 7D a few months later .
    • 223 4  I love this camera . I have a 35mm Canon Rebel , so I knew I'd like the digital version . Great camera for those wanting to take professional photos on a budget .

  • 206 4  Those of you upgrading from a Point and Shoot camera can relate to the lag time between photos . We got so tired of waiting for our PNS to spool up to take another photo we finally upgraded to this DSLR . Wish I had done it 3 years ago . This Rebel is so easy to use and the pictures are great and best of all it is super fast . I am a total Neophyte when it comes to cameras ; I just want a good picture . This product delivers and I think the cost is spot on .
    • 122 4  Feature packed with great image quality make this a great choice for those moving to a DSLR from Point and Shoot . Durability will be tested over time but looks good so far . Also , don't underestimate the wide variety of accessories offered .

  • 210 4  The Rebel XS is a very well built camera , easy to use , with all the features that I need in a camera . The EF-S 18 - 55mm lens is a wide angle lens and works very well . This camera takes 3 frames per second great for any kind of event . The Canon Rebel XSi which is a more expensive camera has more megapixels and a wider screen that's all . For the money saved the Rebel XS is a winner . I have researched all the DSLR cameras on the market and this one is truly the best for the price . The minute I opened the box I knew I had a winner .
    • 054 4  I love this camera . After consulting various friends with different Canons and other digital SLRs , I decided not to go top-of-the-line for the body and use the difference in price to buy an extra lens . After all , as one of my friends put it the lenses last forever , the bodies don't . The extra features on the XSi are overkill for the average photographer , I think , and this camera takes lovely photos and is easy to use . Another lens with a bigger zoom is really a must , but the 18 - 55mm lens is a nice general purpose lens .
    • 073 4  I went from a Canon A - 1 to this , and haven't looked back ! The greatest feature of this camera : It's fun to use ! I guess this is a common feature to all digital cameras . You are able to see your picture right away , and make exposure corrections as needed for that perfect picture . This encourages you to take more pictures , and instantly learn from your mistakes . I am not a professional photographer , but for my money , this camera is hard to beat . I still keep my trusty A - 1 at home , but this Rebel XS is the one that I'm driving around town with these days .

  • 215 4  This product was bought for a digital photography class . I grabbed this one because it was easy to use . Many features are nice . The full auto function works well . . But not when you are expecting something more . . . Also The lens that comes with this is OK . It gets the job done . However , It doesn't really allow you to zoom in very far . For example , I took a photo of a spider , however , I had to get about a foot away from it before it would zoom to the crop that I was looking for . The quality of the pictures is awesome ! Even if you can't zoom in as far as you want , you could always zoom in on the computer and crop . The deep colors in this SLR are amazing . On the Landscape setting you get deeper and richer colors in your blues and greens . Kind of a post card effect . Overall , I am very satisfied with this SLR .
    • 049 4  I bought this as a gift after doing many hours of research to find a good value on this great Digital SLR . The giftee says I did a wonderful job . It is highly rated in the consumers magazine I subscribe to . I have seen some wonderful pictures taken with this camera .

  • The full auto mode is truly accurate and gives excellent shots always , it makes photography so easy for a beginner or intermediate . The portrait mode isn't blurry , images are clean , nicely toned , excellent in quality for large size prints . The P ( program mode ) I like alot at first because this mode sets exposure so nicely I found it addictive . I shot alot of night pics of cars on a freeway , with bright , sharp , lively colours emerging . Night pics at 800 iso had very very very little noise , and I mean I was searching the pics on 15 monitors for reason to complain , but was really impressed . The auto focus is really quick . Th XS comes with only a 7 point auto focus system compared to the XSi 9 point , forgive me when I say there may be no need for another 2 points when the camera focusses so quick and so accurately . I have not gotten a soft image when shot with the auto focus operating . Now for those point and shoot cams that boast about face detection . . . .5 faces . . .6,7 , some even 15 . I also have a 10 mp ultra zoom , this simply matters little if not at all , if the focussing ability of the camera is poor or average , and given the average lens quality they're made of . I have learnt clearly that a 10 MP ultra zoom simply cannot compare to a 10 MP D SLR . . . chalk and cheese . I also bought the Tamron 70mm - 300mm , F4 - 5.6 telephoto / macro lens . No vignetting at either end of the lens . Auto iso is simply magnificent , have not taken a shot where the camera over estimated or underestimated the iso levels . The Manual mode of this camera is the most impressive for me . The rebel XS via various magazine testing has come up faster than it's other 10 MP rivals when it comes to fps shooting , and burst images . It really does shoot 3 fps consistently , it shoots 2.3 fps in low light , worst case is over 1 fps all at 10 MP quality . I haven't used a lower quality since , given I bought a Transcend 8GB SDHC card storage is not an issue . Most of my shooting has been at night , for the little done in daylight , it has been amazing . Colours are very bright , depth of field very very nice . Macros works well . Image optimizer simply shocked life out of me . I was in a shaded area and without flash it really improves the subject without over blowing the background , stuff that is almost impossible on point and shoot cams . Stuff I disagree with from the reviews : 1 - The camera feels cheaply built . . . . simply wrong , nothing is shabby , buttons are actually easy to press , doesn't have cheap clicks to them , the lens mount has a secure feel to it , and a proper snap when it is set . Battery compartment is certainly secure . Your finger must intricately open the door for entry , won't be an accident issue . Rubber door at a.v . ports snap in well . Rubber grip is firm enough , smooth enough to not irritate your hands . 2 - XS is overpriced compared to the XSi . . . . . Xsi shoots slower than the XS , XSi picture quality is equal to the XS even though the XSi is 12 MP . The XSi may be the 3 LCD and a few other upgrades , but these upgrades don't add up when the picture is taken and the quality of both cameras match alike . I may have chosen the XSI if I wanted to spend the extra $150 . u.s but for the lesser price , I'm yet to regret . 3 - The XS only has a 2.5 LCD compared to a couple of it's rivals having 3 LCD's . I can see every thing clearly with this screen , even with Histograms , and grids onscreen . If LCD's get much bigger then canon may need to install a tv tuner as well . . . . the 2.5 is more than sufficient . 4 - The XS doesn't have SPOT METERING compared to the XSi , so this is a big issue - haven't encountered a reason to complain yet , after 500 night shots and 200 day shots . THE DOWN SIDE : the EOS software for uploading the photos to computer , and remote controlling the cam via computer is AWFUL . It's a task to upload , as it is beach balling when you hit upload . Digital professional software is non responsive . I have not been able to use the software past the install point . Mac version here . Better use i-photo and photoshop . I highly rate this camera , and as a videographer who's accustomed to t.v . broadcast quality the REBEL XS is worth it , and since canon is so intent on pushing the rebel XSi they have significantly lowered the price on the XS . . . . . I recommend people buy the XS and get a good lens with the discount earned . The trick is in the lens and the user , and lesser the camera .
    • 001 4  I spent several weeks reviewing the REBEL XS vs it's many 10 MP adversaries , I even checked it against the ultra zooms as I wanted the convenience of video as well , but too many good things stood out with this camera and so I decided upon it . I bought the rebel XS and after days of dirt testing this camera I've found it a beautiful experience . Now I'm a professional videographer attached to a tv station in Trinidad & Tobago , my purpose for this camera was the need for a quick sharp still shot camera that would be impressive under low light and still capture impressive portrait shots to be used for my website and for large prints . I didn't want to shell out over a $1000 . US for a camera body . What is tagged by Canon is true : The full auto mode is truly accurate and gives excellent shots always , it makes photography so easy for a beginner or intermediate . The portrait mode isn't blurry , images are clean , nicely toned , excellent in quality for large size prints . The P ( program mode ) I like alot at first because this mode sets exposure so nicely I found it addictive . • 002 4  I want to save you the time and uncertainty in choosing the best affordable DSLR . For those considering the Canon EOS Rebel XS , the Olympus E - 510 or the Nikon D40 / D40x / D60 , I believe the Canon XS is the best choice . Also , at the price difference between the XS and the SXi ( $150 - 200 as of December ' 08 ) , the XS is an excellent alternative - - both take exactly the same high quality pictures , save the 2MP difference , which is negligible at the end . Please note that the XS's new lens kit comes with the better quality EFS 18 - 55 Image Stabilization lens ( they are better engineered ) ; and that Canon is offering nowadays generous rebates on telephoto lenses when coupled with the purchase of the XS ( I bought mine with the entry-level Canon EF 75 - 300mm III lens with a generous instant Canon rebate . Don't buy from anybody different from B & H Photo , directly from Amazon , Adorama , Buydig / Beach Camera ; stay away from Broadway Photo and TriState ) . Canons are popular for the excellent image processing . Nikons for their Nikor lenses . Olympus , some say , for the color of some of the pictures they take . The Olympus E - 510 has important flaws , e.g . , the average performance in high ISO speeds and highlight blowing . Also , its inconsistency with good results is worth noting . The Nikon D40 lacks important features , e.g . , image stabilization in their kit lens . The D60 is lacking the high picture quality ratings of the Canon XS . Both Nikons are nice looking , which is a selling factor I usually consider ; but picture quality should be your top criterion for the long run . Don't go through the extensive research I have already done ( months , and intense debating ) . The Canon XS is a winner ( specially with the new IS lens kit ) , even more with its current price ( Dec . ' 08 : $480 ) . It is feature rich ( you can even add 3 of your preferred defined Picture Style modes ) , good / professional looking ( black body ) , even the sound of the shooter is nicer than the others . Bottom line : Excellent picture quality , high ISO / low light remarkable performance , and relevant features and space for customization make the Canon XS a winner for months and even years to come .
    • 003 4  This review is geared toward complete newbies ( such as myself ) who are coming from the point-and-shoot world . I purchased this camera due to a budget constraint and after reading numerous reviews . For what you features you get , you simply cannot beat the price for an entry level DSLR camera . You may have looked at the XSI ( as I have ) and have been tempted to put forth the extra $100 or so to get that one . If you get down to the nitty gritty between the specs of the XS and XSI , you'll find that they are very minimally different , and more importantly , those extra features will have no bearing on you as a DSLR newbie . This XS ( 1000D ) model is oft overlooked because so many are praising its bigger brother the XSI . But take a look at a side-by-side comparison and you'll notice not much has been scaled back for this XS . Save that extra money for better glass . I would even be willing to speculate that a future firmware release will address some of these scaled-back features . PROS - Currently the best bang for buck you're going to find ( at this time ) . - Canon didn't scale back very much from the XSI - Some report that the lower MP ( 10 vs XSI's 12 ) gives better image quality because of the sensor ( DigicIII ) . - Excellent image quality even with the supplied kit lens . - Easy to use ( with some research-effort on your part ) - Canon compatibility - - nuff said . CONS - Not crazy about the build materials ( some sort of plastic ) . When I purchase things , I plan on owning them for a very long time , regardless of how outdated it may become a few years down the road . - Some button placements for me seem counter-intuitive , but remember , I'm only a newbie . - Has crop sensor like all of the rebels . - Live View usefulness is questionable . In short : If you're coming from P & S , you will not be disappointed with this purchase . It will meet or exceed your expectations of photo quality and features .
    • 006 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) In a nut shell ( based on cameras in this price range ) : * Great picture quality , especially if you know how to manipulate Raw format - software is included * On the small side of DSLRs - can be a pro or con depending on your use * Included software to control the camera with a computer is a major plus for me * Lens is good for being included in a kit at this price , one of the best IMHO .
    • 008 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I owned a Nikon D40 and used it heavily for six months last year . : - )
    • 010 4  This camera is a FANTASTIC value . . . as long as you don't buy it for full retail price . I believe full retail for the kit with the EF-S 18 - 55mm IS lens is about $600 , but I bought it on Amazon for about $460 . There are deals to be had on this camera , so make sure you find them . CNET has a good review of this camera , so I'll just list the pros and cons as I see them . PROS - Phenomenal photo quality / color fidelity - Intuitive menu / user interface - Sensor cleaner - Lightweight , comfortable to hold - Fast autofocus - Basically non-existent shutter lag - Takes only about 1 second to turn the camera on and take a picture - Compatible with almost all recently ( last 10 - 15 years ) manufactured Canon lenses - 10.1 MP is PLENTY - Poster size prints are excellent ( as long as pictures are crisp ) CONS - Relatively few photos per second ( 3 in ideal lighting conditions ) - Multiple frames per second requires ideal lighting conditions - Lack of spot metering makes taking pictures with lots of contrast VERY difficult ( i.e . sunlight through trees or behind landscape ) . This is my biggest complaint with the camera . - Not compatible with wireless remote control - Kit lens is not great in low light conditions - Lenses with image stabilization are very expensive Overall , this is , in my opinion a terrific starter's digital SLR .
    • 012 4  In March , I decided to get into digital photography and purchase a DSLR . Because most of my friends are Canon users , I didn't have to make the usual decision between brands . The advice I received was to invest money in lenses instead of the camera body . This way , I could continue to use lenses as I advanced and also get higher quality shots with better glass . Also , with the minimum investment , if I could master the basics on the basic DSLR , I could upgrade in the future . ~ 20,000 shots later I am more than satisfied with the use of the XS . Remember how much you are paying . I also purchased the nifty fifty , Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II Camera Lens with the original purchase . Using that lens ( along with the kit lens ) , I was able to learn a lot and develop my skills . I had the dreaded Err99 problem about 1000 shots in , but within a week , I got my camera fixed from Canon . I've heard others with bad stories dealing with Canon customer service , but mine was perfect . I've now invested in other prime lenses . I may upgrade in the future for specs like better ISO noise management or faster shooting rates , but this camera is more than sufficient . Regardless of the camera you end up choosing , just shoot ( many ) photos and learn from them . Learn from others . Learn from photographers all around the world ( flickr , etc . ) For me , Rebel XS was just the camera to bring me into the world of photography ! ( don't forget to purchase UV filters to protect your lenses ! )
    • 013 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I recently purchased the Rebel XS as a Christmas present for my wife and myself , and we both love it .
    • 015 4  I got this new toy for my first Father's Day this year . The best thing about it in the short term was Amazon's price - at least $60 less than anywhere else , PLUS no tax and free shipping ! It comes rated as #4 or #5 on Consumer Reports ' list in the July 2009 issue , just behind the Rebel XSi ( the 12 MP version of this camera ) . We owned a point-and-shoot Canon Powershot before this and Canons have always been in my opinion user-friendly . So far I love all the different shooting modes and the crisp , clear pictures this SLR camera makes . I'm a complete novice when it comes to photography but this camera seems idiot-proof ; you can go from complete manual mode to partial manual to full-auto just with a turn of the dial , and I'm having fun experimenting with changing shutter speed , aperture , etc . and seeing how that changes pictures . We bought it mainly for the 3 frames-per-second capability , so we can capture our 4 month old son's smiles that we keep missing with our old point and shoot . Watch out - you will fill up a memory card fast ! To that end , I would buy the biggest Secure Digital card you can reasonably afford for it . 8GB at least . And apparently the Class 6 SD cards are faster than Class 4 . Something to consider .
    • 016 4  I started of with a $99.00 Kodak Easyshare , quickly outgrew it , then went to Canon S5 . How I love my S5 , but I outgrew it too . Of course , the Rebel XS is just the entry level for Canon's SLR cameras , but the difference between it and the advanced P / S cameras is very noticeable . Image quality is much smoother and sharper , especially using a shallow DOF . You can use the maximum ISO setting with little noise or image degradation . The body itself is petite and fits my small little meat hooks ( hands ) perfectly . No shutter lag . The difference is night and day for those considering the switch . You will be glad you did . I'm sure I will outgrow my baby Rebel too , but I will only have to replace the body . The cons ? The wide neckstrap is chafing . That's minor , of course . The kit lens has maximum aperture of 3.5 , and seems soft . Everyone knows that , though . I have ordered a Sigma 17 - 70 2.8 , which was reccommended as a far better everyday lens by an experienced photographer friend . Another con is lens envy : I knew the good glass is expensive , but I wasn't prepared to pay thousands of dollars for those big zooms I covet . Solution ? Another photographer suggested I get a decent portrait lens , and rent a zoom . I only want it for a few days per year . Bottom line , The XS is entry level for amatuers interested in advancing in photography . I'm not getting into technical details , because I'm still a beginner , but I am quite satisfied with my purchase . Others will say to go with a more advanced body , but for me , I'm satisfied . People with small hands will like this camera especially , as it feels right .
    • 017 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I am looking for a camera with the following attributes : 1 ) Great indoor photo image quality .
    • 020 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I purchased the Canon XS as a Christmas present for my wife .
    • 023 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I think there are plenty of reviews here for someone to look at on the XS .
    • 030 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I debated on getting this or the XSi , and went with this .
    • 036 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) for $500 , this is a much better deal than the point and shoot canon I bought at $330 early last year . I have a toddler . The point and shoot is too slow to capture his move and smile and the details of his face . Point and shoot is very bad under low light . If you have a baby at home , if you can afford $200 extra , please get this $500 deal . I regret I did not buy it in the first place . I could have captured much better pictures when he was a little infant .
    • 038 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) The Canon Rebel XS is my first digital SLR camera . By no means is it my first Canon . I owned a Canon AE - 1 , which I was crazy about . The camera appears to fairly well built , and you have a huge number of lenses from which to choose depending on how much you want to spend . Make sure you purchase lenses that are EF-S , you want the stabilized lenses . I'm having a little trouble with the auto focus , but I think it's my problem . Since I've only used the camera once , I need to practice more . I've ordered a detachable flash to go on the camera . I want the ability to bounce the flash for certain pictures . All in all I pleased with my purchase . I'll be even happier when I can purchase the Canon EF-S 70 - 250mm lense .

I was getting really annoyed with my old point and shoot because I couldn't get the quality photos that I wanted . For someone who is getting their first DSLR I would totally recommend this camera .

    • 044 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I come from having used Canon SLRs since 2007 . Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 Lens ( Black ) was my first dSLR , and I fell in love . The Rebel XS is my replacement for the Rebel XTi , and the only reason the XTi is being replaced is because it was stolen . The differences between Nikon and Canon , are in my opinion minimal as far as quality goes . The larger difference is in personal comfort between the two , assuming no oddities . ( NOTE - I used a Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens and found that the images were not as sharp as what I had experienced with my Canon ) . Part of my enjoyment of the low-end Canon dSLRs is the cost . Simply put , it gives me more money to spend on lenses , filters , and the other items which last . Pros : 1 ) Cost . The Rebel XS is about as inexpensive as a dSLR can get and still be up-to-date . 2 ) Ergonomics . I find the Rebel XS fits comfortably in my hands , that the buttons are easily found , ( and to me at least ) logically located . 3 ) Weight . When carrying my kit up the mountains , ounces start to add up , and the Rebel XS is a very light camera . 4 ) Images . Image quality ( except as noted in Cons ) , is superb , and the resolution more than adequate for 8x10 prints even with considerable cropping . Cons : 1 ) Low-light performance . Compared to the XTi , I find that the Rebel XS has more digital noise at higher resolutions . I wish that it had a max-ISO limiter , like is found on the Nikons . 2 ) Not weather sealed . Unlike the top of the line Canons , the XS is not weather sealed . Overall , for anyone who is getting into dSLRs , or needs a backup dSLR , I would recommend the Rebel XS . It enjoys most of the features of the higher priced prosumer dSLRs with none of the cost . The included kit lens is a nice addition , with included IS . The XS might not be the most expensive , or the flashiest camera , but it will leave you with enough money in your pocket for another lens , such as the Canon EF 70 - 200mm f / 4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras , or a flash Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras and keep you within $1000 .

From full auto to different user definables , pleasure to use , intuitive ; great entry level and now very affordable . 2 ) Photos look great on the computer . Pop the SDHC memory card out ( you provide that ) and upload via card reader ; or connect camera straight into USB connection - works great . I use a Mac OS X 10.4.11 and no issues . 3 ) The Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR is a faster photo taking camera then ANY of my point and shoot cameras . Hands down . 4 ) Reviewing images is easy with direct button review and trashing any pics you didn't like takes seconds - so nice . Easy to manage memory space . 5 ) Has more menu options than most people will need - certainly more than I will need . 6 ) Memory card SDHC type is compatible with other cameras , very useful . 7 ) Buttons are in all the right places , a pleasure because for more experienced amateur photographers , I found that it seems finally that the buttons are now where they make sense to be . 8 ) Disregard other reviews saying grip is petite I have large hands and it works fine . Thumb has a perfect spot to hold and the index finger hits the button perfectly . 9 ) No comments on included software ; Canon web site appears very user friendly . Be sure to check support section for notices . Site appears very up to date . 10 ) No comments on Battery Life - batteries are batteries . 11 ) MY FAVORITE FEATURE ? Favorite menu option is the multiple shot timer - you define how many shots for the timer for family pics , and away it goes - simple but beautiful . 12 ) MY HARDEST CRITIQUE ? It's a tedious detail , and all SLR cameras have it to some degree , but the external flash mount sticks out a bit and as you slide camera into a camera case / bag it has a tendency to hang up - maybe one of you readers could invent a little plastic cap that slides on there so it is smooth ? Otherwise it is hard to find something I don't like about this camera as a non-professional photographer ( in this price range ) . Best camera I have ever had my hands on as an amateur photographer - it will be with me a long time . Enjoy it ! ! !

The giftee says I did a wonderful job . It is highly rated in the consumers magazine I subscribe to . I have seen some wonderful pictures taken with this camera .

We get compliments all the time on our pictures and have also taken pics for others even though I am by no means at all a professional photographer . . . not even close , very amateur . The camera does all the work .
    • 056 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) Having taken this to the Caribbean and taken a lot of pictures , I now feel I can rate this camera .
    • 063 4  The Canon Rebel XS is a beginner's delight for many reasons . First , it comes with good kit lens ( 18 - 55 mm with Image Stabilizer ) . The kit lens is said to be one of the best in the entry level SLR's . Secondly , it has 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC III processor and it shares an interface with almost every current Canon DSLR all the way up to the Canon EOS - 1Ds Mark III . The pictures come out highly detailed , noise-free and sharp . The camera is light weight ( but doesn't feel cheap or fragile ) and memory slot holds SD / SDHC card which are much lighter , cheaper and faster than the old CF card which some other SLR's require . It has a decent battery life ( 400 - 500 shots per charge ) . From 12 modes on the dial , 7 modes are called Basic modes which have auto settings . Depending on the mode you select from it the camera will select the best settings for you , so that you just point and shoot . The other 5 modes are for creative photography where you can tweak different camera settings ( metering , white balance , shutter speed , flash etc . ) to suit the image . In these 5 modes you can also use the live-view , so that you click pictures looking at the LCD-screen ( with 5X or 10X zoom ) . Another fact you should seriously consider if you're a beginner to the SLR photography : Canon Rebel XS has a 7 - point AF system , compared to 3 - point AF in Nikon D40 / D60 . A point focus system gives you the option to select a specific area in the whole frame to focus , it's especially useful when you're taking a Macro pictures and want to create a sharp image of the area / object you select by AF and a good blur ( Bokeh ) on the surrounding parts of the frame . Even though a 7 - point AF in Rebel XS is lesser than a 9 - point AF in SONY A200K , it still comes out better than SONY when you count other features in the Rebel XS . There is so much more scope for being creative using this camera . Many people have made a huge hue-n-cry that the Rebel XS does not having a spot metering . But in my use I still haven't found the desperate need of it . The Rebel XS has partial metering ' which reads approx . 10% of the viewfinder at center and you can recompose the image to your liking by adjusting the aperture setting and shutter speed in Manual mode , if necessary . If you are considering photography as a serious hobby then I suggest you to consider this camera . Once you get this camera you should start saving money to buy good Macro , Ultra-wide and Telephoto zoom lens then you will see what wonders this camera can do . In addition , Canon has a large collection of SLR lens that you can choose to fit this camera . So , for a price range between $450 - 470 this camera is a steal ! But if you're still in doubt , then please read the complete review at : and also go to the nearest Best Buy or local camera store to compare the performance of Canon Rebel XS with Nikon D40 / D60 , Olympus E - 420 , Pentax K200D and SONY A200K . One accessory I would recommend is the Canon XS / XSI Digital Rebel Kit with Case , 58mm UV Filter and LP-E5 Li-ion Battery
    • 064 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) This camera is a great camera for the money . It offers affordability , function , and great shots at a wonderful price point . For a bit more than a full featured point-and-shoot , you can get an equally full featured DSLR . This camera offers ease of use for beginners to the SLR market but also has a full feature set that even experienced photogs would love to have . I'm not going to get into all the features here , you can read them above on Amazon's product page , but I will tell you that they are there to help you get the most of your shot . You can , of course , control exposure , shutter , and aperture , but you can also control white balance and color modes with a push of a button . At high ISO speeds you can shoot indoors without a flash , your pictures will turn out beautiful and perfect every time . What once you would need a 80a or a neutral density filter for you can now do with a few brief menu options on the camera . Another great feature is the live view feature where you can use the LCD screen to see what the camera sees . This is so you won't have to look through the viewfinder and especially useful when doing tripod work . Also the EF-S mount on this camera will also accept your older EF lenses , though EF-S lenses won't fit on your EF mount camera . Overall this is a great camera . It offers wonderful features , price , and takes great pictures . So why don't you move up to a DSLR and start taking great pictures instead of just good pictures .

    • 067 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) This was my first DSLR .

    • 074 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I bought this camera a year ago from Amazon and have absolutely loved using it .

Mike

    • 082 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) Bought this for my mom to begin learning photography .
    • 084 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) Overall the Canon Rebel XS is a wonderful starter DSLR camera . We were pretty worried about making the transition , as neither my wife nor I have any DSLR experience . However , just the automatic settings on this camera make your pictures look phenomenal . We are still exploring the manual features but the auto features alone make it worth the purchase . We highly recommend this camera .

I picked up the Canon EOS Rebel XS kit on a whim because I wanted to start taking much better pictures than what I'm used to taking on a point-and-shoot . So far I am not disappointed . Originally I was going to pick up a Nikon Coolpix L100 10MP Digital Camera with 15x Optical Vibration Reduction ( VR ) Zoom but after reading many bad reviews and considering it was just a glorified point-and-shoot with a zoom lens I decided to go all in on the Canon . Auto Mode is a great starting point on this camera , I'm still learning everything about this camera before I get into taking high end pics . If you want to start taking better pictures and are new to the DSLR game this camera is a great starting point - highly recommend !

My only complaint is that the plastic body and knobs have a sort of cheap feel to them . Photo quality is excellent . Does not come with any memory flash card . Battery life is excellent .
    • 092 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I finally took the plunge into the digital age and bought this Canon .

It has taken some great action shots and still shots . the only down fall is taking pictues in the dark . Even with the flash pics don't come out , a seperate flash stand fixture would be needed but how often do you take pictures is extreme low light . I also wish this was able to record vidoes . Other than that , this is a fantastic camera saved over 50 bucks going through Amazon , it has take some great shots and I highly recomend this camera to anyone . There are other web sites that were much cheaper but are scams . They try to sell you insurance and other items that are not needed Amazon is the way to go . The product is what it is and no false advertizments . JD

( Major reason for sticking to Canon was that I have a great point-n-shoot from them , SD800 IS ) . I've had it for 5 months now and have found it light enough and easy to use . The picture quality is of course excellent . I take pictures in RAW format and export them as Tiff after retouching them using the bundled software , which I have to say is quite good . LiveView is useful only for novices or when you let someone less experienced take pictures using your SLR as most people these days find it difficult to use the viewfinder . The only thing that still bugs me that my ( somewhat long ) nose touches the screen when I take pictures and that kinda makes the screen oily ! Otherwise this is a great and cheap body and I will spend more on lenses later . I bought a UV and CP filter from Tiffen and so far am very pleased with my buy !

However , the controls are easy to use . The camera is well built . It is easy to handle . One major disappointment is the live view option . One should be forewarned that taking pictures through live view slows the camera action greatly . This makes taking pictures through the live view impractical . • 135 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) After damaging my second Canon AE - 1P in the middle 1990 ' s , I switched to an entry level digital camera that did not always satisfy my needs . The functions and variable ISO settings were more than enough to handle anything from bright light to low light , and the pop up flash took care of everything in the dark . . .

The 18 - 55mm lens worked very well for about 17 months . Suddenly , without any preceding maltreatment , the auto focus wouldn't work . I couldn't move the lens through the whole zoom range and I could hear something loose inside the lens . Eventually , a piece looking something like a plumber's wrench fell out of the lens . The Canon warranty is only for 12 months and they are asking $95 to repair it . Buyer beware .

The camera is user friendly and has automatic functions . If I have a problem with the automatic functions , it would be that it quickly opts to the flash mode in low light settings . I'll write more later .

I didn't know many options and took me over a day to go thru the manual and try different options . Well worth the money .
    • 148 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) Great camera , specially considering the price .

The only downfall I can see is the flash unit on the camera . A friend allowed me to use his attachable flash and what a difference . Other than that it takes great pictures nad is fairly easy to use even for beginners like me .

Great image quality , great battery life , the controls are all so easy to use . The only thing is that the max ISO speed is 1600 , I personally think it could be more , maybe 3200 . . . . Other than that , the Rebel XS is the perfect DSLR for me .

    • 155 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) In my humble opinion , any beginner to intermediate photographer cannot go wrong with this camera .
    • 157 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) This is the third Canon rebel that I have owned in the past 10 years , I started in the pre-digital age with a film version .

It has a lot of options , many of which I have not used to date , but I will be taking a class at the local community college that will show me what it can do that I have not yet done . I just find it hard to sit down and read a manual that is close to 150 pages long . I'd just as soon read the tax codes .

I really recommend Canon Rebel XS for people that love photography and don't wanna to have a simple digital camera . . . You just need to buy another lens , like Canon EF 55 - 250 mm , so you'll have more mobility !

Now it's hard to be satisfied with my point and shoot when I see the pictures she gets from this camera . Looks like I am going to be upgrading too .
    • 165 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I use a simple remote timer with this camera and shoot time lapse sequences I assemble in 1080P . This is one of the cleanest cameras I have shot with 1600ISO . No grain noise when playing 24 frames a second back . Amazing , continuous shooting at 1fps in HQ jpeg . Only downside is live view does not have hdmi output to check for sensor dust . I own several camera bodies , and things that slow down regular cleaning of bodies eat more time . So you have to check for sensor dust the old way , by shooting a white image and loading sd card to computer . The camera is so light and cheap , I can have more lens attached to bodies , and not have to change lens in the field which lessons chances of sensor dust . I would rather have 3 of these bodies for shooting stills with different lens on each one then one 7d body with just one lens . Heck you can almost buy 4 of these for what one 7D cost .

    • 169 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) My camera arrived yesterday & I love it ! The supplier included everything that said would be included and he was very nice when there was a confusion over shipping price and he even refunded the extra money I had paid for shipping ! My only complaint was how long the shipping took , but that was because of a mix up at the shipping company , not at all the sellers fault . I would recommend buying from here !

    • 183 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) This camera was purchased as a gift for my wife . She has enjoyed it very much and was able to quickly learn how to take very good pictures . It came with an EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens which seems to be a very versatile lens for overall family picture taking and ease of use . Grandchildren and great grandchildren have already been photographed for our enjoyment .
    • 185 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I had been waiting for waiting for this camera to reach a price I could afford , and it finally did . It was worth the wait . It operates similar to the 35mm film version , and is extremely fast compared to the point-and-shoots I have been using for the last 10 years or so . This is not the latest and greatest that Canon currently makes , but it does what I need it to do .
    • 187 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) The XS is a great camera . I bought it for $409 through Amazon and even though the XSi has a few more options the price difference made me choose the XS . I used the savings to purchase an additional lens . The camera is easy to use and takes some great photos .
    • 189 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I'm a rank beginner in the world of photography and am definitely happy with my purchase of this camera !

I just started playing around with the camera at home with my kid and found the picture quality really outstanding . I also bought extra lens of 75 - 300mm telephoto lens and need to explore more with this camera . Finally i feel good buy for the price . Must have for the family with kids.just go for it . .

My camera appears to have been returned as it was repackaged , which is something I do not care for . I will keep what appears a decent machine , but am wondering what may ( ? ) be wrong with it ? It is likely I will not use Amazon for such a purpose in the future . Let the buyer beware , methinks .

The only way to get it better is to pay more : it'd be nice to have the DIGIC 4 , but that's not what this package is offering .
    • 199 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) The Canon Rebel XS is a nice starter digital SLR camera .
    • 201 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) This was a fantastic improvement over the features and functionality in a Canon PowerShot SX20IS we originally tried .
    • 203 4  This review is from : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18 - 55mm f / 3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens ( Black ) ( Electronics ) I'm still learning about all of the camera's possibilities .
