The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth: The Surprising, Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why
011 4 Nutritionist Jonny Bowden presents The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth , a guide for readers of all backgrounds that does not shy away from controversy . From why milk-off-the-supermarket-shelf is questionable ( pasteurization destroys many nutrients , plus factory farmed cattle tend to be fed unhealthy diets with massive doses of antibiotics ) to the value of blueberries as a memory-promoting food to the antioxidant properties of peanuts , and healthy foods such as Goji berries that readers may be unfamiliar with , The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth is sure to dispel common misconceptions and encourage better food choices and eating habits . The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth is not a vegan or vegetarian book , as it promotes the value of eggs , grass-fed beef , and certain types of seafood , but the majority of ingredients listed are fruits or vegetables . Full-color photographs and a frank discussion of food controversies - including those for which there is not enough evidence to support proof one way or the other - round out this practical and solidly honest guide . Highly recommended .
025 4 I have read the Coconut Oil Miracle by Bruce Fife , which was greatly enlightening , then moved on to Stevia Sweet Recipes by Jeffrey Goettemoeller and numerous other titles by their respective authors . The search to improve my diet as well as my family's will continue . One of the greatest sources that I've found thus far has been this book . The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth is a valuable reference book and reads well , front to back . I did not struggle in my comprehension of the materials and am grateful for the resource . I intend to buy his cookbook .
029 4 I received this book from a friend and it has truly changed the way I think about food . Instead of always feeling bad about the not so healthy foods that I eat , I started incorporating healthy foods from this book into my diet . In the process , the bad foods are filtered out or substituted for good ones . This is a very positive way to go about changing your habits and I've learned many great things from reading this book ( Raw honey , steel-cut oats , and grass-fed beef being the most notable ) . I highly recommend this book and have bought it for several people as gifts . Also , I have a copy on my coffee table , and any one that has looked at it has gone home and ordered one .
102 4 At 52 , I'm relatively new to the actual practice of lifestyle nutrition , and a bit of an intellect by nature . I love this book . It is really helping me change my diet permanently . What started as a weight loss campaign has broadened into a well-grounded foundation for enjoying good food as it was meant to be eaten . Nutrition information is a cluttered and confusing world , Bowden brings order , perspective , and inspiration to living well and healthy , particularly for middle age and beyond .
013 4 Although we've all been told to eat 5 to 9 fruits and vegetables a day , this book actually INSPIRES you do do so because Bowden's writing style is so engaging and easy to read . While there are other books on the market with basically the same message ( eat more fruits , vegetables , and fish ) this book tells you WHICH fruits , vegetables , and fish give you the most bang for your buck , nutrition-wise . Ever since I bought this book a couple of weeks ago , I've been consciously eating many of the foods described in it , and I feel better already . Reading this book almost makes one feel as though you've got your own personal coach who encourages you to eat what you should be eating , which definitely makes this book worth the money . Like I said , even though we already know what we're supposed to be eating , sometimes one needs the INCENTIVE to do so , and this books provides just that .
050 4 This book is THE BEST ! The table of contents allows you to easily look up the spcific foods you're interested in . It's an easy read . It feels like the author is simply speaking to you in a very frank and direct manner . The foods that are listed in the book ( for the most part ) are just very normal foods . It's nothing you haven't heard of before but the book teaches you WHY it's important to incorporate these foods into your daily life . Once you understand WHY these foods are vital and how they can help you you'll be motivated to eat better and live a healthier lifestyle .

I。VE ENJOYED THIS BOOK . I ALSO REALLY LIKE JONNY'S OTHER BOOK ON ENERGY . IF I HAD TO PICK BETWEEN THE TWO , I'D PICK THE BOOK ON ENERGY AS IT INCORPORATES MANY OF THE 150 HEALTHIEST FOODS , ALONG WITH EXERCISE , SUPPLEMENTS , THOUGHTS , ETC .
015 4 I love this book . Not only is it inviting , with it's glossy pages , big print and beautiful pictures of each food being discussed , it has valuable information in it that is easy to understand . I have done a lot of readying about how I should eat and I was shocked to find a book that agreed with every single thing that I have come to believe . Each section gets to the bottom line , and doesn't beat around the bush . It especially impressed me with what he said about eating grains , dairy or soy . That he had the guts to tell the truth . I was so thrilled to have confirmation on the things I have come to believe about healthy eating .
005 4 This book could not be any better . There are a million books out there that tell you what foods are healthy and , anyone that has paid any attention at all , can tell you what is healthy and what is not . But this book goes farther by giving you all the research and little known facts about so many different foods . And it presents both sides of controversial topics , such as soy . I now have a resource to see how I can correct problems through nutrition . This is highly recommended for anyone that has an interest in improving their health through nutrition . Thank you ! ! !
037 4 This book is by far the best book on nutrition that I have ever read . It is filled with simple changes that can make a huge difference to your overall quality of life . Understanding how processing our food changes it's make-up has been the most beneficial for me . The author is humerous , factual , thorough , realistic and comprehensive . An easy start to making good food choices for better living .
099 4 I absolutely love this book . It has met my expectations . The colorful pictures add to the books wide array of info.I have been researching on health and nutrition for some time now and I've read many books . This book qualifies as a great source for informing you healthy foods . Thanks for offering the product online . Your site has great values and you deliver .
110 4 I was very happy with this book . It came recommended by two friends of mine and I have recommended it to several friends who love it . We all have read it and use it now as a reference book . Eating right is very important and I found this book keeeps me on the right track . Thank you Amazon for the good price and delivery . RF
016 4 If you are at all interested in nutrition , this book will fascinate you . It is beautifully researched and a veritable encyclopedia of the most interesting information on the foods that are most good for you . Even if you know a lot about the nutritive values of food , you will find tons of facts that you didn't know before - - why something is good for you , how it is good for you , how to buy it , prepare it and eat it to get the most from it . Moreover , it is beautifully designed , printed on really nice glossy paper and with great full-color photographs . Really a very very well-done book . Most highly recommended ! !
014 4 The best book I have read in this subject matter . I have given this book to friends and family who eat very poorly and all of them have loved it . They have thanked me and are all trying to eat a lot better . Remember . . . you are what you eat . You won't go wrong in buying this book .
031 4 For me , this is the best book Jonny has written . Packed with info in an easy to understand format , I reference this regularly , and have sent copies to family . Lets you know what foods to eat for optimum health , and the reasons why . If you believe that eating a healthy diet limits you to a few bland , unappealing foods , read this and learn otherwise . Eating for health can be fun and delicious . Typically health books are not the type that you pick up and can't put down , but this one is . You will not be disappointed .
097 4 This book is easy to read and understand and full of information that we all should understand about the food we're eating . Biggest surprises for me were the egg , soy and milk findings . Don't believe everything you hear about what's good and what's not until you read this book . Really valuable information .
022 4 The title says it all . Very easy read ( and sometimes humorous ) with some suprising facts about the foods we eat . The book breaks food down into food groups ( example , vegetables , grains , etc . ) and then goes through the ' power list ' alphabetically with full descriptions of each along with a short blurp on how to eat the food and what it should taste like . I will definitely be working in more of the super ' stars ' . You should know this is NOT a recipe book but rather a guide to the best of the best foods ( for your health ) on the planet .
026 4 I have found this book an indispensable reference for my meal planning , shopping lists and more , but I am a researcher of health issues and nutrition , and this book fills so many blanks for me . I have already given one to my sister who has Crohn's disease . She needs to eat the healthiest foods possible since she can have no grains whatsoever . She , too , has found it the most helpful book yet . It is written in such an interesting style you can't possibly get bored or confused . It is clear in its intent , and organized into readily accessable units for quick reference . I love this book . Judy Kruse
056 4 Packed with nutritional gems , this well organized and informative book lists all the foods that are great at enhancing your health - which includes chocolate !
078 4 This book gives nutritional information on foods that I need to incorporate into my diet as well as how to best prepare the foods for maximum benifit . It also helps me plan my shopping based on my personal needs .
089 4 It is wonderful to have in one collection all foods specified that you should include in your daily dietary regimen . Awesome book .
030 4 Brilliant book for anyone wishing to know more about what they put in their mouthes , and it will certainly open your eyes to what is considered healthy and what not , as there may be a few surprises in there for some people .
047 4 Excellent for the serious health nut and very educational for anyone who really wants to learn how to keep a healthy body running at it's best .
094 4 This is an excellent resource with an incredible amount of information about the foods we should be eating . Naturally , there were many surprises to dispell misinformation .
101 4 Excellent book ! It contains good information about what makes the foods healthy and why they made the top of the list .
038 4 This book basically describes the healthiest foods in detail and its stuff that most of us are already aware of . Like blueberries , kale , broccoli , spinach , and dark leafy greens are powerful antioxidant houses and can prevent certain diseases and cancers . Much of the same information found in Mens Health or Womens Health magazines are found in this book .
053 4 Wonderful book , great pictures and information on healthy foods and spices and best ways to prepare them . Very valuable book . Great purchase
118 4 Great book , very fast shipping . Real pleased with the book and the service . Thanks , L . Whaley
049 4 This book changed what I eat and the way I think about the food that I eat . I am a 30 year old woman who was raised the culture of constant dieting . Although Bowden doesn't offer a diet solution if you eat the foods he recommends in the book and cut out the fast-acting carbs and sugar in breads , cereals , pastas , desserts , cakes rolls , cracker and fast food ( pg . 18 ) you will lose weight . AND once you get over the 3 day hunger hump , it's not that hard ! I've lost 5lbs within the first two weeks and I am never hungry . I use this book as a constant reference into what I am eating . If I feel like a need to cheat I don't have to cheat , I usually eat ( sugar free ) dark chocolate or strawberries with splenda both of which are one of 150 healthiest foods .
071 4 This is the best book on the market dedicated to superfoods . The information inside is worth a small fortune . Using a few of Bowden's recommendations have improved my health in a relatively short period of time . If we all used the nutrition in foods for our health , we would need fewer supplements and be less dependent on doctors .
052 4 This book is amazing ! It is filled with tons of useful information . The book is very user freindly and well organized . The pictures are beartiful ! I consider myself well versed in nutrition and healthy foods ( I am currently pursuing a degree in nutrition ) and there was a lot of information that I knew , but there was also a lot that I was not aware of and I was so excited to learn more about these amazing foods . The book is well written and I felt like it was presented in an unbiased manner . I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about what they put into their body . I love this book . I hope his natural cures book is as good as this one - I've been meaning to check it out . This book is worth it's weight in gold !
083 4 This book is very easy to read and understand . It is laid out so you can find just about any of the 150 healthiest foods on earth . It gives you the info about each of them . Also tells what the top people in the field of nutrition eat themselves .
Super book ! !
106 4 It is an amazing book full of info about basic food that we should all eat .
Great source of inspiration .
057 4 My sister introduced me to this book and I enjoyed the information . It's great to be able to know which foods are healthiest and it also includes information regarding which foods are best to buy organic .
Although this is not a cookbook , it would have been great if a basic recipe would have been included with each food , perhaps from one of the experts quoted in this book . I would love to try all these foods but lack the knowledge on how to prepare most of them , especially the vegetables .
Other than that , this was a very informative book .
075 4 I recently started a back yard vegetable garden and , as a novice , was puzzling over what plants to grow . Although this book was not intended for gardeners , it has been an inspirational and very useful guide for making highly nutritional choices . ( For example , I now plan to grow and eat lots of kale . ) I highly recommended this book to home gardeners ( and to ordinary grocery shoppers too ! ) .
093 4 I got the book on time and in perfect condition .
Good company to buy from . . . . . . .
104 4 This is an incredible book . It is very accessible to the layperson and highly informative . I highly recommend it .
109 4 This is the best book I have seen on the subject ! I use it like a food bible . Everyone I have showed it to , has gone out and bought a copy !
065 4 I am very pleased with my purchase of The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth . I would recommend this book to anybody who is serious about what they eat . It is extremely informative .
069 4 This a fabulous book . It is simply put . Wonderful with a boatload of information . . . . . . which is easy to understand and implement . . . . . I have purchased several , after my own , to give as CHRISTmas and birthday gifts . . . . . my friends and family love it !
073 4 Whilst convalescing after major surgery I went to [ . . . ] and first saw Dr Jonny Bowden . At the time I felt shut out from life and wondering if my recovery would be successful . Jonny Bowden's videos and advice cheered me immensely . Eventually I bought his book and no regrets . I have read it for the best part of a month and have appreciated everything in it . Our supermarkets nearby stock so much but we are factory fed and ingredients of many products may not be beneficial to us at all but are there for appearance and shelf life . The majority of the foods listed are actually nice to eat . Yes I know - I saw the quote long ago , People who eat natural foods die of natural causes . But in between they must contribute to your well being . It is simply good nutrition . I would say this book is a favourite on my bookshelf . I was also lucky in that the used copy I bought was delivered speedily and happened to be personally autographed by Jonny Bowden . That was a nice thing .
051 4 This is the most interesting and amazing book I've ever read ! What a wealth of good information and facts that can help you eat better and shop smarter . My husband and I have been reading two sections at a time , out loud , with our coffee every morning and have learned so much about choosing foods that build health and what to avoid so as not to ruin health . The writing style is fun and enjoyable , and when we're done reading it , we'll start all over again , since we'll have forgotten most of it by then . In the meantime if anyone wants a great informative read , this is the one .
055 4 this book has inspired me to serve healthier foods to my family - much needed and appreciated - lots of good facts , or just skim it and go shopping for healthier eating . . . .
081 4 There are so many great reasons to eat your fruits and veggies , and Jonny Bowden breaks it all down for you . The writing is clear , informative and entertaining . My only nit is with the word unbiased . Who are we kidding ? Would you write a book if you DIDN'T have a bias ? Luckily , he supports the health merits of the foods he lists with studies . Definately a great book to own for anyone who's trying to eat healthfully .
103 4 This is an excellent book on eating the healthiest foods and what they can do for you . It is colorfully and well laid out and written in simple terms that anyone can understand . It also comes with a complimentary cd by John Bowden talking about 5 of the best things you can to for a healthier lifestyle . I agree with everything he says and have made some healthy additions to my already healthy lifestyle . I love the book .
085 4 I really like this book . . . it's a great reference and when I'm tempted to just eat the same ol ' same ol ' I'll open this book and get inspired by the multitude of healthy food choices there are . No need to eat the same thing all the time b / c The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth offers an abundance of options . So when you're going ho hum about what you're eating and want to stick with the healthy stuff this is the book !
027 4 Suffice it to say that this book is an easy to read , concise guide . Handy for me and my Family to pull off the cookbook shelf for reminders and tips . I highly recommend it !
033 4 About 60% of the foods in this book I already knew were healthy for you , but that remaining 40% is what makes this book worth it . Whether you are a novice on healthy foods or you are an expert , this book is a handy and very easy to read reference .
046 4 The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth is one of the best books I've ever read and very educational . Excellent reading and it confirms a lot of the foods I have been eating for quite sometime . I always learn something new and it was very entertaining also .
063 4 I loved the down to earth language in this book , as well as the extra tidbits of information , such as one of the author's favorite snacks using cherries . A lot of it is common sense stuff , but it's more than just a listing of the 150 healthiest foods - it will also recount WHY it's so healthy .
067 4 This book is amazing . A great reference to healthy food and eating . What I really like is it tells you why the food is healthy and why you should eat it . I carry it almost everywhere with me . Today we are just not educated on nutrition enough so I feel like I've finally gotten my education and I am informed instead of guessing . I consult this before I go grocery shopping ! ! !
079 4 This is one of the best books I have ever purchased , it's fun of facts and details for anyone interested in eating a healthy diet rich with the abundance of minerals and vitamins etc .
114 4 This book is great . It's laid out well and it's very easy to understand . I keep it in the kitchen as a refrence book before I go shopping . As a result I have lost 5 pounds in about 10 days . I'm quit sure that the long term effects will be priceless .
I'm the one who recommended Jonny Bowden to write this book . No one paid me ; I did it simply because I knew he was the best man for the job . As a result , I was fortunate enough to read it before it became available to the general public , and I can say without reservation that Jonny has knocked it out of the park .
If you're interested in food and nutrition , you need this book . If you think you already know a lot about food and nutrition , you * REALLY * need this book - - because I guarantee you , you * will * learn something new . Probably several somethings new , and some of it is going to surprise you . Jonny slaughters a few sacred cows , I warn you . If you're just starting to learn about nutrition , this book will bring you up to speed virtually overnight . Furthermore , it will entertain you while doing so .
Jonny knows his stuff , and that's important . What's equally important is that he writes really well . You won't slog through pages of musty jargon . Jonny's writing is clear , engaging , and fun to read . If you're like me , and find being entertained and educated at the same time almost too wonderful to bear , Jonny's your guy .
In short , this is the nutrition book - - and probably the health book - - of the year - - and the year hasn't even started yet . Still , with the perspective of thirty years of fascination with nutrition , I say that with absolute confidence .
If you care about your health , or just like learning stuff while being entertained , order The 150 Healthiest Foods On Earth * now * . You won't be sorry .

The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth : The Surprising , Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why ( Paperback )
The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth is a carefully researched , well written book . The author gives you the complete nutritional lowdown on each of the 150 foods included in the book . A number of the 150 foods have a star at the beginning of the article on them , signifying that according to Jonny Bowden they are nutritional superstars ( the best of the best ) .
The book includes chapters on vegetables , grains , beans , fruits , nuts , seeds , and nut butters , soy , dairy , meat , poutry and eggs fish , specialty foods , beverages , herbs and spices , oils and sweetners . It is chock full of useful nutrition information for those wanting to use food to prevent or help heal various diseases .
The author is careful to accurately state the facts about the nutritional benefits of each healthiest food included in the book . Bowden always backs his assertions about the health beneifts of each food with the scientific research that supports the food's health benefits . He is also quick to point out where certain excellent foods have been hyped to work miracles that they can't possibly preform . Bowden calls a spade a spade . He also has a good sense of humor .
While there is no recipe section in the book , the author gives many suggestions for ways to simply use each healthiest food . His suggestions are very uncomplicated and really doable .

I found this book at my library and then got my own copy . I bought it because I find it to be a motivator to change my eating habits from chicken and vegetables to almost completely vegan . Now I am buying and eating foods I never considered and I keep myself motivated by finding information in this book . The layout of 150 Healthist Foods is well done , the information is fairly complete , but the author does not include much about proportion or an overwhelming amount of detail . At the moment I have not even looked at the CD that comes with the book . For more complete detail about a food , consult the internet . For every day use and to remind yourself to shop for nutrition , keep this book in easy reach .

This book is by far the best book on nutrition that I have ever read . It is filled with simple changes that can make a huge difference to your overall quality of life . Understanding how processing our food changes it's make-up has been the most beneficial for me . The author is humerous , factual , thorough , realistic and comprehensive . An easy start to making good food choices for better living .
039 4 The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth provides a thorough rundown on a wide array of commonly available foods and the nutrients they contain . To eat right in today's world is not easy , as the foods we have as options often contain nutritional landmines , such as high fructose corn syrup and the unsavory sludge known as trans fats .
Author Jonny Bowden gives the details you need to steer clear of such hazards , and does it with an informal , uncomplicated presentation . I especially appreciate his perspective of it depends in the case of so many different foods , explaining that the processing , source from which they came , and nutrients a given creature consumed before it gets to your dinner plate all factor in to the healthfulness of a given food .
A great book for your healthy living library !

Really great and simple premise , the sections are well thought out and informative while not running on . It's obviously not an end all for all people as certain people work better with certain foods , but it's a great starting point or refresher for everyone .

This book is amazing . ! !

This is the best book on the market dedicated to superfoods . The information inside is worth a small fortune . Using a few of Bowden's recommendations have improved my health in a relatively short period of time . If we all used the nutrition in foods for our health , we would need fewer supplements and be less dependent on doctors .

Whilst convalescing after major surgery I went to [ . .

I recently started a back yard vegetable garden and , as a novice , was puzzling over what plants to grow . Although this book was not intended for gardeners , it has been an inspirational and very useful guide for making highly nutritional choices . ( For example , I now plan to grow and eat lots of kale . ) I highly recommended this book to home gardeners ( and to ordinary grocery shoppers too ! ) .

Well , if I am going to start eating more heathfully ( and that IS the plan ) , then I need to make well-informed food choices - - and this book is a big help in that . The author analyzes foods by category : fruits , vegetables , grains , beans and legumes , nuts and seeds , soy foods , dairy , meat and poultry / eggs , fish and seafood , specialty foods ( like sea vegetables and whey protein powder ) , beverages , herbs and spices and condiments , oils , and sweeteners . It even comes with a CD that I haven't watched yet . This one gets four starts instead of five , just for the fact that nutrition books aren't fascinating ,

I continue to be sceptical about any book that purposes to suggest the best foods to eat without consideration of how they are grown . Yes , that makes things very complicated . But it's rediculous to suggest that ANY blueberry , regardless of how old it is or where it's grown , is better than , say a fresh blackberry grown on mineralized soil . Despite the best efforts of agribusiness to make it appear that way , food is not a factory product . A carrot is not a carrot is not a carrot . They vary .
Just once I'd like to see an acknowlegement that there are thousands of other healthy foods out there , and that each of us comes equipped at birth with a remarkably accurate nutrition tester - our mouths . High flavor usually = high nutritive value , once you rule out artificially contrived high flavor ( processed snacks , hot dogs , etc . ) Not always , but yes , usually . So pile on the herbs and eat it fresh-picked !
The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth : The Surprising , Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why ( Paperback )
Eat this food , it'll make you healthy . Oh , wait a minute , that was yesterday's news . Actually , make sure you DON'T eat this food because it's not as good for you as we previously thought . Don't worry because we may change our minds again tomorrow , though , so keep checking back !
Do you find your head spinning round and round at all the relentless health claims you hear bantered about in the news just about every single day ? Who among us has the time to keep up with it all ? Do we really care ?
While the information that comes out about the latest research on the various foods we eat can sometimes be humorous in its perplexing contradictions , the sincere desire by most people to eat right for the sake of maintaining their weight and health is certainly no laughing matter to them .
Especially for those tens of millions of Americans who suffer from health threats such as obesity , diabetes , cancer , and heart disease , among other things , getting the right information about what to eat could very well mean the difference between living a few years longer or dying a tragic premature death .
This is a sobering thought that should be seriously examined by all those who are in charge of providing health information in America . Enough with all the hyperbolic innuendo every time a new study about the healthy benefits of a new food comes out !
All we want is to be told the truth about what foods are genuinely good for us , not constantly spoon-fed more of the same old mumbo jumbo garbage science we often hear from the plethora of company-financed studies from those who have a vested interest in a specific outcome . There's a reason why they pour millions of dollars into this supposedly impartial undertakings - - profits at the hands of the public's ignorance !
Can't somebody ( ANYBODY ! ) just come up with an unbiased and reliable resource for solid nutritional information that the average person can use to determine what they should be eating for optimum health with no pretenses , just the unadulterated truth ? !
Well , that resource is finally here thanks to weight loss coach and nutrition expert Dr . Jonny Bowden who has penned his most brilliant worked to date entitled The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth : The Surprising , Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why .
While the title may fool many people into believing this is just one big yawner of an encyclopedia-type book about food , don't be disillusioned because it is so much more than that . Bowden writes with such a personal flair for what he does borne out of his sincere passion for healthy living that he even makes discussing complex nutritional terms like flavanoids , antioxidants , and phytochemicals sound cool .
For me , just one look at the dedication page of The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth helped me realize that Bowden didn't just flippantly throw this list of foods together in some sloppy attempt to crank out another book . Instead , he took great inspiration from the best people in his life to guide him along about what to include in this book , like his late mother , his beloved dog , his faithful companion , as well as two other women who should be very familiar to anyone who is livin ' la vida low-carb - - Lora Ruffer from Low-Carb Luxury and Regina Wilshire from the Weight of the Evidence blog .
Although Bowden has since backed away from his support for the low-carb lifestyle despite having written what is arguably the best book on low-carb living ( Living The Low-Carb Life : From Atkins to the Zone Choosing the Diet That's Right for You ) , it's nice to know he has sought the assistance of some of the leading voices in the low-carb community for the right perspective on what to include in this book . THANK YOU for remembering your low-carb supporters , Jonny !
And Bowden most certainly covers the gamut in his book looking at the specific vegetables , beans , fruits , nuts , seeds , meat , eggs , fish , beverages , herbs and spices , oils , and sweeteners that are considered the very healthiest for you to consume . Page after page , you get to see the spectrum of choices available to you starting with the best in each food category . You get the good , better , and best for each food group !
But what will most likely shock a lot of people about this book is the fact there is scant mention of supposedly healthy foods we hear so much about such as soy , dairy , and grains . GASP ! How can this be in a book about the healthiest foods on Earth ? READ THE BOOK !
At the same time , Bowden includes not-so-well-known health foods like butter , macadamia nuts , eggs including the yolk , the right kind and quantity of dark chocolate , hemp seed oil , raw honey , and the saturated fat-laden coconut oil among the best for you to eat . Say what ? Do you wanna know why these were included in this list ? Again , READ THE BOOK !
While the user-friendly layout and vibrant pictures included in The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth are absolutely gorgeous ( kudos to the design team ! ) , it's that signature Jonny Bowden writing style that captivates your attention from the very beginning and makes you want to keep reading what would normally be a rather drab and boring book from page one all the way to the very last page . It's almost like a dietary suspense novel because you never know what you're gonna discover next !
I'm anxiously awaiting all of the so-called health experts to start coming out of the woodwork blasting away at this book for promoting some hidden agenda . But too bad for them they won't have a leg to stand on because every single food included in these 360 pages is completely backed up by some of the most compelling evidence you will find anywhere . Credit Bowden for doing his homework .
There's a lot that can be learned from someone who can clearly explain what grass-fed means for beef , free-range means for eggs , and organic which is being put on just about everything these days . Bowden is the one who makes it all understandable and practical so that it benefits all those who read it - - a real asset in our fast-paced , time-sensitive society !
In addition to the hundreds of hours he spent researching for this book , Bowden also implored the assistance of some of the world's best and brightest health advocates to compile their own top ten lists of their favorite health foods . People like Drs . Michael and Mary Dan Eades from Protein Power , Dr . Fred Pescatore from The Hamptons Diet , low-carb researcher Dr . Jeff Volek from the University of Connecticut , Dr . Oz Garcia , Dr . Barry Sears , and so many more are sprinkled throughout this book ! It's a literal who's who in the health and nutrition world , so you won't want to miss their recommendations .
Also , as a special bonus gift for getting this book , Bowden provides a complimentary sample CD of one of his three new audiobooks called 23 Ways To Improve Your Life which I previously reviewed at my Livin ' La Vida Low-Carb blog . This man truly has a gift for communicating both in the written and spoken form which is a real asset considering the crisis of health we face today .
Jonny Bowden isn't just another health book author who is here today , gone tomorrow - - he has made helping people live a healthier lifestyle his life's work . I'm so glad he wrote The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth because it adds some much-needed clarity to the debate over what foods are the most healthy . After reading this book , there should be no more doubts !

The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth : The Surprising , Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why ( Paperback )
` The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth ' by Jonny Bowden , Ph.D . , C.N.S . is the latest and best of the healthy eating genre , the ` best foods ' book . Earlier entries in this category are ` Superfoods ' by Steven Pratt , M.D . and Kathy Matthews and the ' 12 Best Foods Cookbook ' by Dana Jacobi . Bowden's book is different in three directions from these other volumes . First , it contains no recipes . This is little loss , as the second difference , the much longer list of ` good ' foods more than makes it up . One can quite easily find good recipes for these foods by yourself . For starters , just get Pratt and Jacobi's books ! The third difference is that the author has many comments on what is NOT good for you , what you should avoid , as well as the many things you should search out .
The very best news in this book is the revelation ( or confirmation , if you are up on your nutritional news flashes ) that coffee , wine , butter , eggs , chocolate , cinnamon and watermelon are GOOD FOR YOU ! One of the biggest surprises is that most soy products and many milk products ( although NOT cheese and yogurt ) are NOT good for you . Weak soy products include soy milk and tofu . Fermented soy products such as miso , like so many other fermented food products ( yogurt , Kimchee , cheeses and sauerkraut ) are still valuable , enhanced by the friendly bacteria responsible for the fermentation .
In spite of all the great news about some guilty pleasures , Bowden gives no relief for the bread and pasta lovers among us . It seems that grains such as wheat and rice , no matter how ` unfussed about with ' , are high in ` empty calories ' . Processed white grain and their wheats come off as being close to being poisonous ! I'm exaggerating , of course , but I sometimes have the feeling that our good Dr . Bowden sometimes overstates his case just a smidge . One example that caught my eye was his opinion on the relative value of the commercially packaged honey ( regardless of flowery source ) versus raw honey in the comb . While I am not intimate with all the details of honey processing , I have seen some of the steps , and I honestly can't see how a bit of centrifugation and even pasteurization can succeed in turning something good into something bad or at least neutral . On the other hand , Bowden does agree with a general position on food processing that claims that all heat treatment such as pasteurization degrades foods . The entire ` Raw ' food movement is based on this premise . So , while I am not ready to go out and buy my dehydrator and ship my range off to the metal recycler , I chalk some points up to the ` Raw ' camp from this very knowledgeably written book . One question I would pose to the Raw camp is how can you deal with especially good foods such as bitter greens which are almost inedible , or at least unpalatable if left uncooked .
One thing I find missing in this and virtually all other books on nutrition is a good practical sense of what in economics is called the marginal value of one food over another . For example , what is the practical difference to us between raw honey and ` processed ' honey . I will grant the difference , but is that difference worth the effort required to search out a source for raw honey when the ` Sue Bee ' honey bear is on every supermarket shelf . A more serious thought on the marginal value of foods arises when the author , or any other nutritional author touts a particular nutritional benefit , such as the anti-prostate cancer properties of lycopene found in both tomatoes and watermelon . As I am genetically predisposed to prostate cancer , I am inclined to wolf down as many tomato preparations as I can get my hands on . My problem is that this ` hope ' is probably pretty slim . Two portions of tomatoes a day for the rest of my life will probably change my chances by about 0.2% . I'm just guessing here , but I have a hunch that if someone ate a perfect diet according to these recommendation , the difference may still be too small to measure . This is why the author's negative comments about grains , milk , and soy are probably more valuable , as they warn us against things which we have for generations believed to be especially good for us .
I found only one weakness in Dr . Bowden's facts , or at least in his completeness . In the article about cinnamon , he does not distinguish between true cinnamon ( cinnamonum zelanicum ) from Sri Lanka and it's close lookalike , cassia ( Cinnamomum cassia ) from China and southeast Asia . My hunch is that the good doctor was really talking about cassia . He would have removed a small blemish on his thoroughness if he would have distinguished the two . In general , he would have given a small bone to those of us who dote on such things if he were to have given the scientific names for all plant and animal food sources .
Overall , this is a really good book on nutrition . Not because it's facts are better than those in many other books on nutrition , but rather because the cases for both good and bad foods are so eloquently and readably made . My two favorite facts are on the relative nutritional value of dandelion greens and lamb . Now dandelion should be no surprise , ALL green leaved vegetables are good for you . It's just that dandelion , like so many greens , is cheap . The good news about lamb , my very favorite meat , is based on the fact that sheep are grass fed , unlike cattle and pigs . And , if there is any one lesson we get from this book , our food sources , like us , are what they eat , and green grass is much better for Bo Peep's charges than corn or wheat .
This is an excellent book of useable information on nutrition ! I hope the author gets together with a strong culinary collaborator and turns all this information into a cookbook .

003 4 This is a beautifully presented book , a pleasure to look at with its crisp photos and clean layout . The content more than matches the promise of the aesthetics - it's packed with all sorts of gems , including :
* Ask the Expert top 10 food lists from various authorities who are either health writers or practitioners
* starred entries within the list of 150 foods , designating the cream of the crop
* a glossary that helpfully defines various nutrients , hormones , diseases , etc
* mini-lessons on such hot topics as the glycemic index , differentiation of fats , and eating organically
* interpretation of foods from homeopathic , Ayurvedic , and yoga nutritional therapy perspectives
The 150 selected foods are organised into chapters by food genres : Vegetables ; Grains ; Beans & Legumes ; Fruits ; Nuts , Seeds , and Nut Butters ; Soy Foods ; Dairy ; Meat , Poultry , and Eggs ; Fish and Seafood ; Specialty Foods ; Beverages ; Herb , Spices , and Condiments ; Oils ; and Sweeteners . Each food listing carries an explanation of which nutrients makes it a winner , why these nutrients are so good for us , who in particular would benefit , and who's at risk and so should avoid that particular food . Jonny even frequently provides tips on selection and preparation .
So much of the information is fascinating , and often surprising . Discover that cashews are a member of the poison ivy family , while eggplant is actually a berry and falls into the nightshade grouping . Learn that raspberries are calorie for calorie one of the most high-fibre foods on the planet , and that spinach and tomatoes are great for your eyes thanks to the lutein in them . Determine how to convert unsalted butter to ghee , which is one of the finest cooking oils available and provides an important rejuvenating tonic for the mind , brain , and nervous system . And realize that country of origin of cheese affects its cancer-fighting , fat-reducing properties .
Although very entertaining , this book is still solidly backed by the science . The research presented is impressive , but Jonny is adept at making complex things simple . As a result , the book is an easy and engaging read - so much so that it feels a little like enjoying a conversation with Jonny over a cup of coffee ( or , after reading this book , a glass of noni juice ! ) .
If you want to understand what you're eating , its properties and how it affects your body , this well-considered book is a must-have . As a health and fitness trainer , I'm enthusiastically recommending this book to all my clients so they can achieve fat loss , health , and performance goals through informed dietary choices .

007 4 Eat this food , it'll make you healthy .

After reading this book , there should be no more doubts !
010 4 The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth is a carefully researched , well written book .
017 4 Well , given the rave reviews , I was disappointed . It's not that this isn't a good quality book . I can see that a fair amount of work has gone into this compilation of foods and their information . In trying to encapsulate a set number of foods , I feel the substance of this book has been thinned out .
It makes for good reading material if you feel like sitting down and finding out that you've been doing it wrong for so long because you can't get your hands on organic free-range salmon , or how such and such a food is good for preventing prostate cancer , but if you need an easy index to look up whether the salad you're about to eat is going to contribute to your daily intake of calcium which has been lacking lately , then you might find your lettuce will be soggy by the time you get back to your meal .
There is no set formula for each article , which was a good and bad move at the same time . It's good , because obviously different foods have a different point of interest , such as the vast variance in nutritional value according to preparation & growth , or the reasons people have maligned that food in the past , so why waste time on things that are irrelevant or a non-issue to that food , right ? But it's also bad , because without a uniform summary of each food to accompany the article , whether or not something is really irrelevant or insignifcant , or just wasn't noteworthy enough to spend time on , isn't clear . If an article doesn't mention iron content , for example , does it mean that food has no value for people needing to increase their iron at all ?
So this book is interesting to perouse and flick through , in order to educate oneself about foods , but a lot of it will end up just as trivia , rather than hard & fast facts and figures needed for someone's serious , concerted and above of all organised effort to achieve healthy eating . It doesn't need to be boiled down to merely a calorie-counting book , but I do feel it lacks balance .
My suggestions for improvement would be a simple table breaking down the nutritional value of each food , so it's useful both for browsing and for quick reference . It doesn't even have to be in milligrams per gram - it could simply indicate good or high or low for certain key dietary requirements , much like World's Healthiest Foods does in their book and website . Also , the article needs to be more formalised , so that each article covers the same aspects , not just a vague collect of features & benefits that one has to wade through to glean specifics .
All in all , I guess I shouldn't have changed my mind from buying the World's Healthiest Foods by George Mateljan , however I'm not too sore about it , because I'm sure that if I own both books , I will find they compliment each other and fill in what I miss from each one . On its own , though , this book holds little practical worth to me .

Author & Book Views On A Healthy Life !
Book Review : The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth ( Fair Winds Press , 2007 ) by Jonny Bowden , Ph.D .
Sometimes I think we're living in the dark ages rather than during a period of enlightenment . Practically all of our population can read and is educated , and should be well aware of the advantages of nutrition , exercise , and healthy living . Unfortunately , recent studies have indicated that the current situation is the exact opposite - - American obesity is leading us all down the road to an overtaxed health system . Each year we see our government implement laws to improve our health . The key however is not our government . As citizens , our duty is to take control of our own health .
The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth by Jonny Bowden gives an overview of what we should be consuming on a daily basis . Citing recent research and experts in their fields , Bowden covers :
* Vegetables - - turnips , greens
* Grains - - quinoa , brown rice , oatmeal
* Bean & Legumes - - edamame , garbanzo beans
* Fruits - - kiwi , cherries , cranberries
* Nuts , Seeds , and Nut Butters - - almond butter , sunflower seeds , walnuts , flax seed
* Soy Foods - - natto , miso , tempeh
* Dairy - - milk , yogurt
* Meat , Poultry , Eggs - - organic , grass-fed , free running
* Fish & Seafood - - salmon , omega - 3 , wild , tuna
* Specialty Foods - - fermented
* Beverages - - coffee , tea
* Herbs , Spices , and Condiments - - parsley , oregano , apple cider vinegar
* Oils - - coconut , sesame , olive
* Sweeteners - - blackstrap molasses , honey
Bowden's book covers origins of foods , their benefits , and even offers a glossary of unusual terms . The end of each chapter mentions an expert and his or her top ten foods as well .
Did you know :
Medium-chain triglycerides in coconut oil kill the bacterias causing strep throat , pneumonia , and sinusitis ?
Ginger may out-perform Dramamine in preventing seasickness ?
Oregano has 42 times more antioxidant activity than apples ?
Snacking on sunflower seeds offers protection against heart disease ?
Eating eggs may protect against breast cancer ?
Kids should eat wild salmon to boost their brain development ?
Unless you're a nutritionist , you certainly still have something new to learn about how foods help keep us sharp , toned , and disease-free . Educate yourself by reading Bowden's The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth . You'll not only help yourself , but you'll put your children on the road to health for life .

The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth : The Surprising , Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why ( Paperback )
About 60% of the foods in this book I already knew were healthy for you , but that remaining 40% is what makes this book worth it . Whether you are a novice on healthy foods or you are an expert , this book is a handy and very easy to read reference .

The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth : The Surprising , Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why ( Paperback )
I enjoyed this book tremendously , both in terms of information AND ease of reading . Along the lines of SuperFoods Rx and The 12 Best Foods Cookbook , but with much , much more information and many more foods . This contains a wealth of knowledge all in one book ~ only downside is that no recipes are listed ! There were some surprises ~ like how FEW grains are listed as healthy foods . On the other hand , butter made it as one of the 150 Healthiest .
In my opinion , it truly was an unbiased look at foods , politically speaking . Very refreshing !

040 4 I usually like books with recipes . This one is an exception ! A lot of these foods are great fresh anyway or require little cooking . The pictures are beautiful . I liked the Expert's Top Ten showing what the famous doctors , authors , etc . choose as their top ten healthy foods .
Each section Fruits , Vegetables , Legumes and Beans , etc . are alphabetized . Very imformative and easy to read . I was glad to read that a lot of foods are very healthy that I have been avoiding . I'm sure moderation is the key , as with most anything . Eggs , liver , coffee and chocolate are not deadly foods ! There are a lot of foods that are very nutritious though fattening unless used in moderation as in nuts of most kinds . Again , this was recommended by a friend and I combined it with another book to make free shipping . I think I got a great deal on Amazon .
043 4 This is one of the best books I've bought in a long time . You could probably get the raw information contained in this book off the Web with a little bit of work , but the book has huge value from the sheer energy with which it presents eating healthily . The book is beautifully produced , with lavish color photographs of each food - - page 24 , for example , sports a kingly stalk of beautiful fresh green broccoli standing upright against a glossy white page , soft shadow angling off to the left , next to the sentence , Broccoli is vegetable royalty . And Jonny Bowden writes with infectious enthusiasm about the health benefits of all the foods , so that you really feel that that handful of blueberries you're eating will keep your memory strong into old age , and that the quinoa you're cooking gives you a leg up on everyone else in terms of nutrition value in your grain .
The one ding I'll give to the book is that it has not taken into account any considerations of the environmental impact of the food recommendations given . This turns out to be a surprisingly minor issue , but it leads to things like ( for example ) a recommendation of orange roughy as a good fish choice , which may be true in terms of pure health but is not ecologically sustainable .
But the book earns a solid five stars nevertheless . A hard-boiled egg and oatmeal with frozen berries for breakfast ! Yeah !
058 4 This is a fun book to read and you will probably change your diet after reading it . Probably change it for the better . But make no mistake , Jonny Bowden is a salesman . He even sells many of the products he recommends on his website . He cites numerous studies that advocate the things he recommends and I give him credit for that . However , he does not cite the studies on the same products that don't show an effect , and he sometimes infers benefits that the studies he cites do not imply . I found a site on line where someone called him a quack because he was not able to ascertain where Jonny's PhD came from , and because an organization Jonny is associated with is know to endorse dubious health products or methods .
Read it for fun . If you think this is real science you are fooling yourself .
059 4 Jonny Bowden turned me on to nutrition ( I'm currently working on a degree ) , and even if The 150 Healthiest Foods was utter crap I would still list its good qualities .
Fortunately , the book is quite good . Please don't dismiss it as one of those encyclopedic tomes full of food facts that never leave the bookshelves save for the occasional quick hit of information . Nor is The 150 Healthiest Foods a pretty , colorful picture book , even though the pictures are quite appealing .
Even if you're familiar with the foods listed here - even if you grew them and ate them and can recite every known fact about them - you will still learn a ton . Even when he delves into complex biochemistry , Jonny's accessible , engaging writing style manages to remain chatty and entertaining . He doesn't condescend or bore .
Some readers question why certain foods appear here and others don't . Jonny is whip-smart and researches extensively , and The 150 Healthiest Foods evolved from the latest , most thorough scientific research .
But my words don't do justice . Visit www.jonnybowden.com to read samples from this fabulous book , and get to know this remarkable man . He can change your life .
088 4 This is a well-researched , easy-to-read encyclopedic book of 150 healthy foods with pictures . The author describes why each of the foods is healthy and what beneficial nutrients are in the food . He also tells you what the food can be used to treat or prevent . There are starred entries for particularly healthy foods . The book has an informative glossary as well as an extensive index so you can find the food by its name or by what it can treat . The foods include some personal favorites such as almonds , yogurt , and blueberries , as well as some surprising foods such as peanut butter , raw milk , butter , eggs , chocolate , coffee , and various meats .
The 150 foods are arranged into logical categories in the chapters . The book's Contents are :
Chapter 1 Vegetables
Chapter 2 Grains
Chapter 3 Beans and Legumes
Chapter 4 Fruits
Chapter 5 Nuts , Seeds , and Nut Butters
Chapter 6 Soy Foods
Chapter 7 Dairy
Chapter 8 Meat , Poultry , and Eggs
Chapter 9 Fish and Seafood
Chapter 10 Specialty Foods
Chapter 11 Beverages
Chapter 12 Herbs , Spices , and Condiments

Glossary , Index
This well-researched book offers detailed information on healthy foods as well as fun facts about many of the foods . It even discusses some food controversies . It is an interesting read and may encourage you to eat healthy foods you may not currently be eating . It is a great book for helping you to understand why it is important to eat healthy foods . I recommend this book along with great companion books ,

095 4 We have been fascinated by this book since it arrived two days ago . I am interested in nutrition , but by no means an expert , and I found this book just right for my level of knowledge . He doesn't shy away from the science and names of the compounds that are getting all the good work done in our bodies , but he doesn't get TOO scientific to be boring or confusing .
I found the information very much in agreement with what I've learned from various alternative medicine type sources , but not at all fanatical . The photos are bright and colorful . I would love for this book to also include a chart for each food summarizing the nutrients and benefits of the food , as well as some info about when the fruits and veggies are in season and how to select them .
The best thing about this book is that it has us truly excited about trying new foods , and improving our diet !
100 4 I bought this for myself , but my college-aged son was home for winter break and he read it constantly while he was home and took it back to school with him .
Fun to read and very informative , it's a must-have reference for anyone who eats !
108 4 if one cares about whatever enters the body through the mouth , one must read this book.it displays the writers knowlege of the value of eating , it gives a veraiety of scientific back ups and the best is his belief in eating right
= living a good life
121 4 I continue to be sceptical about any book that purposes to suggest the best foods to eat without consideration of how they are grown .
122 4 The one thing that really turned me off in this book was his proclamation that whey protein is a supreme form of protein powder . HEMP Powder , which is plant-based is far superior . Whey is extremely allergenic and is a waste-by product of the animal based curds and whey . Most of the population cannot digest it and many are allergic to it as I am .
Excerpted from MyBodyHisTemple dot com : Before 1960 , whey was trucked to hog farms as pig feed . That was an expensive way to dispose of it , so the dairy industry began to look for other inexpensive alternatives . Many cheese manufacturers began to illegally dump whey into streams , landfills , and sewers ; however , federal regulations strictly forbade this practice . Why ?
Whey is 100 to 200 times more stronger a pollutant than residential sewage , and most municipal sewerage plants cannot treat it adequately . Disposal in streams is out because whey depletes waterways of oxygen , thus rendering them incapable of supporting marine life . Disposal on unused land or gravel pits is often unsuitable because of seepage into water supplies . ( Ibid . 328 . )
With solutions dwindling for the inexpensive disposal of whey , the dairy industry finally discovered an innovative resolution . You're going to love this ! Straight from the Los Angeles Times on December 4 , 1978 , we read , The solution hit upon by both industry and government is to apply high technology and sophisticated marketing techniques and feed the stuff to humans .
It worked before ! The meat and dairy industry collaborated to bring us the poisonous four food groups with their advertising campaigns and education programs . Why not use the same strategy for whey ? This stuff is too toxic for sewers , but not for the American people ! They'll eat anything ! Let's promote it as a health food and put it in everything from Twinkies to margarine . Hey , let's even put it in baby food ! We can even put it in protein drinks for kids , like Ovaltine . Check your food labels and you will be surprised what else contains whey .
Whey is a noxious , mucus-forming protein ! ( from My Body His Temple )
for more information visit notmilk dot org or mybodyhistemple dot com .
There is some good information in this book but nothing new that hasn't been touted in many vegan and vegetarian books . The inclusion of Whey as a superior source of protein is enough to make me return the book and give it a 1 star for stating the obvious on the fruits and vegetables and including a noxious substance such as whey over Hemp or Pea protein or even Rice protein for goodness sakes , the author should know better !
