Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner

  • 009 4  I bought this item for my small office . I wanted it to be shared by the partners on the server , as it scans super fast and comes with a complete standard version of Adobe Acrobat 8.0 . Nevertheless , the software and hardware are not compatible to work on a windows 2003 server environment . You have to practically restart the server in order for the thing to work , and if the server goes into sleep mode or you turn the S510 Scansnap scanner's power off , the server won't recognize it . It worked great on my Windows XP Professional PC ; nevertheless , DO NOTE that you must have Windows SP2 for XP installed on your computer . I don't know how it will work with Windows vista . In any case , do consult with a techie or a specialist to get the thing running , because you may run into the SP2 conflict , and it can get confusing as even if you have it installed the menus in the quick start guide do not necessarily come up , so you're left with a big What now ? face on your expensive investment , especially if you're no computer techie or see-what-happens experimenter .
    • 010 4  The is a great scanner for converting documents to pdf . However , only has color and b & w options , no grayscale . If you have grayscale documents to scan , this is a major limitation . Pros : Good design , small , scans duplex , comes with Acrobat 8.0 Standard ( must register ) , scan quality good with slow speeds , works with VISTA . Cons : No grayscale mode as above . Minor cons : Document feeder sometimes takes more than one page , must use a carrier for odd-sized or newsprint ( only one supplied ) .
    • 015 4  This little gem helped me exit a clinical psychology practive of 25 years last Spring of 2007 . Amazon had the best price , and I got an added warranty from the mfr . Like a fool , I waited until the very end of my business life only to find out I had to retain many , many records . What saved me was buying this machine , then hiring my office manager's daughter for three weeks to feed documents through it - about 1 / 3 of the 3,800 pounds of confidential clinical and financial records I sent to the shredder . Now I am going to use it go get rid of an attic of paperwork . The full Adobe software works flawlessly . The paper feeds very nicely and handles some items I did not think would go through . ONE LITTLE TIP : For scanning small groups or batches of paper that are stapled , I did not bother to take the staple out , as that process creates wrinkles . Just become adept at snipping off the stapled corner of the whole batch of sheets with some heavy-duty shears ( I replaced several of these ) and you don't usually lose anything worth keeping . If you have stapled groups of papers in the same file folder , this trick cuts down on time to scan several hundred percent . ANOTHER TIP : You can use this machine to back up everything on paper that you really want to keep . ANOTHER TIP : Tonight I used Adobe to sent three receipts via email , because I can use the Adobe to create a pdf file and email it in two or three minutes , no xeroxing or extra hard copy . In short , if you are wanting to scan and store or send a lot of paperwork - even to the point of many hundreds of pounds , this scanner does an amazing job . And I clean it minimally .
    • 019 4  This scanner performs better than expected . Installation was very easy . The combination of the scanner features and Acrobat makes this very easy to use . I am scanning 60,000 + documents , and it would be a back-breaker without this product . The duplex operation with the autofeed works very well . If an error occurs or is suspected , the software lets you know , then waits for you to correct the condition , then continues . You do not lose what has been previously done ! ! ! ! When the last document in the hopper is done , the software allows you to add more and continue , rather than arbitrarily assuming the job is done . I have scanned over 300 pages into one file thanks to this feature . This scanner exceeded my expectations .
    • 041 4  I have used flat beds , visioneer strobe xp100 , and others but this one is hands down the best one . It fed 30 or so wrinkly old work orders printed on different types of papers etc . Not one mis fed paper ! I used to take an hour to scan , convert to PDF , organize files but now it ripped thru these in 1 minute . It isnt cheap but the Adobe 8.0 and the scanner actually working like it should is a no brainer . If you want to scan anything , and go paperless . . . this is the scanner you need . It has a decent organizer software and was relatively easy for me to set up and get streamlined how I needed it to be . I have Vista and no problems at all . Go get one , no disappointments .
    • 060 4  This is a pricey bit of equipment compared to a scanner printer combo . . . so if you scan a page or two a week probably not worth the money . . but if you want scanning to actually work for you , this really is a thing of beauty . Very fast , easy to use , a real triumph of design . . . its tiny ! I could not be happier . You can check out the demo on the fujistu website . . it actually works at least that well . . If you want a quick , intelligent scanner without a lot of hassles , this is a great option . A cheaper , slower and less user friendly option is a false economy .
    • 082 4  We liked this scanner so much , we now have two of them . We are using one for converting our files to paperless by scanning them into a dedicated computer . The second is for email attachment to replace faxing forms . As insurance brokers , we are knee deep in paper and forms . The ease of use , speed and quality is excellent . The cost , compared to others , is amazing . We rejected a similar unit that cost $2,000 two years ago . If you need it , buy this one .
    • 154 4  I just purchased this scanner and it's amazing , when I opened the box I was surprised how small and lite it was , installation was simple , however I didn't really like the organizer software but I never really needed it anyway . If you need a fast document scanner then get this one .
    • 166 4  PROS : I'm a Pharmacist and we use something similar to this scanner for prescription capture . This thing is faster . Very useful for home use too . Paper mail , magazines ( cutting the bindings ) , and other documents get scanned . Google desktop indexes ( download ) . If I need to find some info , I search what every word I can remember . Boom ! There it is . I hate my filing cabinet . I love this . CONS : No Twain drivers and doesn't work on Windows Home Server .
    • 168 4  Title says it all . Fast on the scan side . Fast on the user interface . Right out of the box I scanned a 20 page document in less than 2 minutes . That includes renaming and saving to a server . One button and you are off . Note : If you are scanning any larger than 8.5 wide docs . it will do the job , it just won't be easy .
    • 181 4  Works great , a bit pricy however . If you need to do a lot of scanning the price is worth it . Comes w / a good software package as well .

  • 020 4  I have a large collection or periodicals . . . magazines , journals , etc ; which occupy way too much space on shelves in my basement . I only keep those periodicals which are reference types , not news and popular magazines , but still those worthy ones were slowly pushing into my available work space . Several years ago , National Geographic decided to issue all their past issues in a CD-ROM set , with the promise of update CDs every couple of years . I went this way and dumped the magazines themselves . This was very nice , since besides saving lots of room , the latest CDs included an index of articles and subjects that included all issued back to the first one , so I could easily find anything they ever published . Unfortunately , not long after I went to this system , National Geographic had some sort of run-in with the various people who submit articles , over compensation for the CD-ROMs , and they ceased the CD program . That's another story , but it was a great idea and implementation . It got me thinking . . . I waited a few years trying to decide how to get a similar result for all my other periodicals , but blanched at the thought of trying to scan page after page in my flat bed scanner . Even my trusty Canon MF6530 copier / scanner / printer ( also reviewed here at Amazon ) , would be too slow or otherwise problematic for this task . I finally settled on the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 document scanner . here was a machine designed specifically for what I wanted it to do , and nothing else . From all other reviews I read , people loved it and were having very good results . The machine seems to go for about $400 in most places , which seems like a lot for what you get , but it is important to remember that it comes bundled with a FULL version of Adobe Acrobat ( not just the free reader program ) , which by itself goes for about $200 . Looking at it this way , the scanner costs $200 for the machine . This scanner is not designed for scanning odd sized and shaped items , although it can do them in a limited sort of way . You really need a flat bed scanner for those . This scanner is for rapidly scanning lots of regular sized pages arranged in stacks , as with a sheaf of papers . It is excellent for periodicals once the binding is removed . . . . I ended up buying , online via eBay , a guillotine type paper cutter , also known as a ' ream cutter ' and by several other names . This is a tool used by print shops and such to cleanly and accurately cut through many sheets of paper at once , on on the larger ones the user can cut through an entire ream of paper without fanning the pages or making a sloppy cut . The $150 one I bought can cut through a medium sized phone book but not a whole 500 sheet ream ; in other words , excellent for books and periodicals . I place the volume in , crank down on the clamp that keeps the pages from fanning during the cutting process , then haul down on the large lever to shear through the paper . It cuts off just the very edge of the binding , leaving clean edged sheets of consistent size , losing no text ( on photos that span one sheet to another , you would lose about 1 / 8 in the middle of the image ) . I mention this to be helpful to others contemplating the same scanning task . With the ScanSanp on my desk , it opens ( unfolds , really ) from an 11 x 6 footprint in two quick hand movements . Opening it also turns it on , and it is ready to go instantly . I drop the stack of pages into the top chute and press the single large green button . The scanner driver pops up a box on the screen ( which can be minimized if you don't want to look at it ) and the scanning commences . The pages sail through very quickly , perhaps one sheet every 4 seconds . By ' sheet ' I mean the actual piece of paper , which of course usually is printed on both sides , and hence is actually two ( 2 ) ' pages ' . The scanner has identical scanning elements positioned both above and below the paper path , so it scans both sides at the same time as they pass through into the output tray below . The on-screen box shows the tally of the number of scanned pages . Paper jams are infrequent . When they occur , it is because the paper is dusty and the rubber feed roller is getting slippery with the dust . The scanner driver detects this and halts , alerting you to open the scanner ( a single button pops it open in a clamshell manner ) , clean the roller if necessary , replace the paper , and click an on-screen button to resume scanning . If done this way , the pages scanned before the jam are not lost , and you get an uninterrupted PDF file as if nothing had happened . If you go about clearing the jam any other way , you might need to use Acrobat later on to merge separate PDF files , each containing parts of the scan . I usually use a compressed air can to blow the dust off of the roller , but you can also use a clean rag , etc . If the roller gets really dirty , you might need to clean it with more attention , according to the instructions in the manual . Fujitsu also sells a kit to replace the components that eventually fail due to accumulation of crud from the paper , including the main roller . This is not expensive and the parts are all laid out and easy to reach when the scanner clamshell is opened . The default result of a scan is a single PDF file per document . However , the scanner driver allows setting other preferences , including a separate PDF per sheet and other choices . You get pretty much the same choices you would with most other scanners . You can also decide whether the scanner should try to correct for you mistakes . The scanner has the ability to straighten ( in software ) pages that might have fed through slightly askew , rotate pages that went in upside down , remove any blank pages , etc ; For my periodicals , I have most of these turned off . The scanner can also be set to automatically do an OCR ( Optical Character Recognition ) during the scan process . This is handy if you want the resulting files to be searchable in Acrobat , but it does slow down the scan . The OCR software also comes bundled with the scanner , or I believe you can decide to use you own existing OCR . . . don't quote me on this though , as I have not tried it . You can tell the scanner driver to save the resulting files anywhere you choose , and it can automatically assign file names ( much like a digital camera does with its image files ) , or you can type in the names manually . I have found the scanner to work nearly flawlessly with paper ranging from newsprint to fairly heavy , glossy covers . Every once in a while I will hear the roller working on a problem page ( almost always the thicker glossy ones ) . . . it does a little dance back and forth to try and entice the page to move from the stack before it gives up and indicates a misfeed . . . . and I can press down slightly on the top of the sheet to help it , but like i said this is infrequent . The scan quality is excellent . Not really what you might get from the better flat bed scanners in high resolution mode , but very good for documents . It makes short work of the periodicals I put through it . This is one of those tools that does exactly what it is supposed to and does it very well . I should point out one other thing that I am doing , besides shearing the bindings off as previously mentioned , to achieve my goal . I also database the articles . I have a speadsheet open on one part of the screen and the Acrobat open on another , and scroll through the scanned magazines while entering data on the articles and subjects I find , indexed back to the file names . This will allow me to find anything once the whole process is complete . I mention this as a reality check . . . . many people think that once they scan something , their problems are over , but what they may really have in many situations is a bunch of computer files without any way to find out what's in them . You could use the scanner's little file management utility for this , but it would not be as comprehensive of flexible as one you make up on your own using a database or spreadsheet program you probably already own .
    • 001 4  I have horrible problems with technology . I buy stuff , and after 4 hours of trying to get it to do what I thought it should do , it doesn't . HP does this to me all the time . That is why I was floored when I got the S510 working in under 20 minutes exactly as I wanted it to . You can take a bunch of pieces of paper , scan in both sides , capture it to PDF , OCR it , make it search-able , save it to disk . . . all by pressing one button . I am using the ScanSnap filing system software that comes with it . It is essentially a glorified file explorer , except that it will do text in PDF searches for you based on the directory ( Or Cabinet as they call it ) . I set mine to extreme compression , and full resolution , and then the auto OCR . The software warns you that it will slow down scanning , and it does . It maxes out my 2 - 3 year old Dell D600 with .5G of RAM laptop , but it gets the job done . I can still use the computer so it doesn't block like I have read elsewhere ( maybe for the S500 ) . This is an upgrade to the S500 . Mine was black , not sure what's up with the white ones ( maybe mac ? ) . It comes with Adobe Acrobat 8 . This allows you to delete pages , rotate them , etc . The OCR is amazing . Out of the box , it gets a little confused with i1IlL but so do I , bump it up to the max resolution , and the OCR is flawless . I probably won't bother with the try & buy Rack2 Filer . Google Desktop isn't essential for searching . In the hundreds of papers that I scanned over the weekend , I may have had 3 jams which are REALLY easy to clear , and the software is pretty smart about it . If I had a newer / heftier computer , things would go A LOT faster ( not the fault of the scanner or the software though , I watched my CPU spike and slow during scanning & OCR ) This literally was one of the only pieces of gear I have taken out of the box , and had 100% functional within the hour . My .005% gripe ; Be able to tell the scanner Yeah , don't scan the backs of these pages rather than navigate all through the menus . But disk is cheap , and I can always delete it with Acrobat later . I'll recommend it to my friends & customers .
    • 002 4  I have used this scanner and its software for the last 7 months . It works extremely well , is very fast , has nearly perfect software , and is well worth the cost . The bundled software alone is worth quite a bit . Use the background OCR for scanned documents along with Google Desktop Search or similar and you will be able to find things in seconds most of the time . I scan every piece of mail , receipt , or paper that I get . I can now realistically go paperless - this is what I've been waiting for . It would be nice if it had standard driver interfaces or Linux support , but I'm very happy with it otherwise .
    • 003 4  For the price of the product , and the advertised speeds and functions , you'd think all of your printed material could be fed into this scanner . You'd be wrong . Snapshots will jam in this device . You are locked into Fujitsu's software for scanning . And , you do not get TWAIN drivers for the device , so you cannot acquire images from this scanner when inside a program like Paint Shop Pro . This is a single-purpose scanner : feed it all of your sheets of paper , and it will convert them to PDFs . If you have a lot of paper , then this is your scanner . If you have a lot of mixed media , this is NOT your scanner . Find another automatic document feed ( ADF ) scanner with TWAIN driver support . - C
    • 004 4  A fast document scanner like this one can be a huge help in organizing your life . Six months ago , the S510 was about the only game in town for a reasonable price . Now , there may be better options , especially for rather heavy-duty users like me . The pluses have been well-written about , so I'll give only the minuses : 1 ) No Grey Scale ! B / W is fine for pure text and some graphics , but is horrible with photos . In a publication with b / w photos , one is stuck with either copying in full color which results in large files , or manually switching between color mode and B / W mode since Auto-Color Detect senses color , not the presence of photos . 2 ) The paper input tray has fences that are too short . Pages tend to torque left as they feed . The paper output tray has no fences at all , which often means that the output pages get shifted around or kicked off onto the floor . The De-skew option can get confused if there is graphics on the page or if the printing is stylized . 3 ) The color scans are too light and there is no way to adjust the setting . 4 ) Japan has lousy paper . As a result , this scanner has a hard time with good quality paper as it's too thick . 5 ) Oft-used scan options are buried in strangely organized menus . 6 ) Inadequate cooling . A few cooling holes in the base along with rubber feet would fix the problem , but as it is , there is no airflow through the unit . 7 ) Life limit of 150,000 - 200,000 pages , possibly due to the bad cooling . There are now quite a few pixels missing from the scans ; it's still okay for text , but irritating for illustrations . It's doing the job , but I'd shop around were I looking for the same type of scanner today .
    • 005 4  Anyone out there who , like me , tends to accumulate a lot of paper needs to beg , borrow , or steal to get their hands on this baby . I've had it exactly a week today , and it's already had a huge impact on my life . I've had one of those milk crates sitting in my office , stuffed full of papers I wanted to keep or scan using my flatbed scanner for several months . I would make a dent in it every so often , but certainly never emptied it . With the ScanSnap , I finished it in under one week . The scanner is a lot smaller than it looks in the pictures - takes up very little room when closed , and not much more when opened fully . It was simple as can be to hook up - install the bundled software , plug in the power and USB cords , and you're in business ! It has worked like a dream since scan #1 and I am finding the ScanSnap Organizer software adequate for my needs . I'm fine 90% of the time with the simple PDF format , but the OCR / searchable PDF settings have worked just fine also with the software I already had installed . the scan quality at Normal / Fastest is still clear enough for most things I want to save , and even when I've changed the setting to Best Quality a few times , the scan was still pretty fast . As most people have noted , the scanner does not have TWAIN support , which was my only concern pre-ordering this , as I am pretty attached to my Nuance PaperPort software . But I haven't missed it at all . PaperPort can still view , organize annotate , and edit the ScanSnap PDFs just fine . I just allow PaperPort a view into the new folder and voila ! The PDF format is just so universal these days , that I just don't think it's an issue . If the ScanSnap's output was a proprietary format , my opinion might be different , but you just cannot argue with 1 . place papers to be scanned in tray , 2 . Hit big green button to scan . 3 . Throw newly scanned papers away . Open PDF in whatever program you want to use to edit , annotate , etc . I have had minimal trouble with papers jamming and when it did happen , I could easily see why - paper had a tear I didn't see , a stray staple got stuck , etc . The rollers do slip and make a squealing sound on glossy paper sometimes . I have had maybe 2 - 3 instances of the scanner pulling through more than one page at a time , and again , I could usually see why this happened . More user-error than the fault of this wonderful invention ! Another big-time bonus for me - - when scanning with my flatbed through PaperPort , that software holds the scans in a temp file somewhere until you have scanned your whole batch . You also have to scan a blank page between each set of pages to separate articles . On more than one occasion , I have scanned a pile of magazine articles or something into PaperPort , made sure all my blanks were in place , and hit the Finished Scanning button , only to have it freeze up on me and lose EVERY single page . I have yet to find where those temp files might be ( if anywhere ) to try and salvage them when this happens . I'd resorted to scanning only about 20 pages at a time before letting it do its thing stacking and dividing . Definitely slowed me down even more than scanning one page at a time with a flatbed should take . But that has all changed . The ScanSnap is the tool I have been waiting for to help me FINALLY finish my office decluttering . It is truly amazing , and if any of what I've said rings true for you , you NEED this scanner . It's not a luxury - it's a necessity !
    • 006 4  I save every piece of paper that comes in the mail or crosses my desk . I have phone bills dating back to when I first got a phone line , and that was quite some years ago - - we won't go into exactly how many . With the stacks and boxes of paper accumulating , and the filing cabinets overflowing , I decided that the only way out was to scan things to PDF and shred them . I quickly learned that scanning double-sided , multi-page bank statements using a cheap flatbed scanner was going to relegate me to paper purgatory for the rest of my life . When I found the ScanSnap , I was overjoyed . Not only does it scan both sides of each page in one pass , not only does it have a multi-sheet feeder that rarely misfires , not only does it scan documents into PDF format , but it makes the PDFs searchable , thanks to an excellent OCR software package that comes with the scanner . Pros : - Lightning fast scanning ( pages go through the scanner very quickly ) - OCR software is great - Save as PDF , import into Word or PowerPoint with the click of your mouse - Compact design means it takes up very little space on your desk - Very easy to clear jams or misfeeds when they occur Cons : - Sometimes mis-feeds when processing a large stack of paper - Cannot handle different-size sheets within the same batch - Post-processing is slow ( your mileage will vary depending on your computer , but it takes the software on my computer a good 20 minutes to post-process a 15 - page scan before I can save it to PDF ) Overall , this scanner is a truly remarkable piece of technology and I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to go paperless .
    • 007 4  I really like this small machine . I've had it about a month and have so far scanned thousands of old work invoices and statements for storage as well as family photos and patient medical records . Does them all . Very easy set-up , and relatively easy to figure out with-out getting deep into the included written documentation . I scan all kinds of stuff , this scanner zips through them with virtually no problems . I agree with other reviewers - Blazingly Fast . My only very small complaint is it does occasionally jam but it is incredibly easy to unjam in seconds . It isn't a twain compliant scanner , so if that is important to you definitely be aware of that limitation . In my applications this is not a huge problem but has surfaced as a hmmm . . . wish it did this type of situation . This is why I gave it four stars-it isn't absolutely perfect but close . Another nice feature is it picks up the job where it left off , if something does get jammed or you are manually feeding in different sizes of documents . The device has a relatively straight through pass for the documents or photos which makes it great at scanning old photos-so the photos don't get all bent up . The ability to duplex scan ( both sides at once ) is a real time saver . It comes bundled with all the software a person could want or need so it is ready to go right out of the box ! I like it so much I'm considering buying another one for work . For the price this nifty little scanner can make short work of most of your scanning needs .
    • 011 4  I went through two other document scanners in the last few months - - the HP Scanjet 5550C and the Pentax DSmobile 600 - - before finally ponying up for the Fujitsu . The HP I sold after a few weeks ( ADF never worked ) , and the Pentax I ended up throwing in the garbage ( original unit was defective as was the warranty replacement I received ) . I would have saved myself a whole lot of time and money if I had just purchased the Fujitsu from the get go . The S510 is pretty much perfect . Right out of the box it looks and feels carefully thought out and well designed . The software and drivers work perfectly with Vista . It scans quickly and clearly . The document feeder works great , and almost never jams ( and even then , it opens up in a snap - - quite a difference from the HP , which required two different screwdrivers to open up in case of a jam ) . I love the way it scans directly to PDF , and preforms OCR and indexing in the background when your computer is idle . This is a great product , well worth the money .
    • 014 4  I bought this scanner almost two years ago after moving house and having to deal with three large metal filing cabinets full of paper ( about 30 linear feet of packed hanging files ) . After nearly breaking my back transporting them to a storage facility , I swore that I would never do it again : I would digitize everything . My main requirements of a scanner were ( 1 ) it must be able to feed more than one page at a time , ( 2 ) it must scan in duplex and , ( 3 ) it won't cost me a fortune . I did my research and the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 pretty popped to the top of a very short list . All I can say is WOW ! This little workhorse of a scanner has been everything I could hope for and more . I put the entire contents of those filing cabinets through it ( probably 20,000 + sheets of paper ) and have since then scanned and stored every piece paper that has come across my desk and several shelves of books whose pages I liberated from their bindings ( probably another 10,000 sheets ) . The scanner paid for itself in no time with just the storage fees I saved on those files . Given the load I've put on this cute little scanner , I've expected it to die on me at almost any moment . If so , I would happily have shelled out another $500 for a new one without hesitation . But this little guy just keeps on scanning day after day without complaint . The only slightly negative thing I can say about it is that even though it does a fairly good job of scanning photographs , it doesn't really match up against a flat-bed photo scanner for quality . If you quickly want to digitize a lot of photographs and quality isn't of paramount importance , then the S500 will do a fine job . But , if you want to get the best possible scans of your old photographs and don't mind spending the time needed to do so , then I suggest you get yourself a good flatbed photo scanner - I've been using an Epson 3490 for well over a year with no complaints .
    • 017 4  All I can say is that this little scanner is amazing . It works at the speed I need and the software is as simple as I like . I am a semi-geek , but I like user simple software . The less buttons I press , the happier I am . I have to do too much of that at work , so at home , I wanted something simpler . I had tried the Plustek SmartOffice PS282 Duplex Scanner , which has the same body type , but the quality and the software was terrible . The speed was slow , even at their simplest , and the quality of the PDFs were not acceptable . It could not even get the colors right on photos , whereas the ScanSnap does excellent copies . It cost me an extra $100 , but if it lasts me long enough to digitize my library of books and files , then , it was well worth it . I told HP to move over because so far , all of their equipment , from scanners to PCs have left me dissappointed . If you need a simple to use , and fast scanning capabilites , then this is the scanner for you .
    • 023 4  I was very impressed at how well this scanner can handle handwritten notes . They are on lined paper , which is not as clear as white copy paper . It's not a problem for the ScanSnap S510 . I set it to Black and White and Better quality , and was able to scan 70 pages of notes in a matter of minutes . They came out crisp and legible , and when I was done , the PDF was only 3.6MB ! Jams do happen from time to time , because the rollers run the paper through so quickly . But it's easy to fix . Also , the scanner comes with a carrier sheet , for scanning newspapers and large documents , or preventing multi-feeds ( when the feeder doesn't feed a single sheet like it's supposed to ) . It's possible that a more expensive model would have a better feeder that wouldn't jam . Documents that were folded can be hard to feed . However , the scans are so quick and so impressive that it's forgivable . Be advised that there are no TWAIN drivers for this scanner . You have to use ScanSnap Manager . The software is intelligent enough to rotate images automatically , and detect skew automatically and correct it . This is very nice to have . There appears to be some integration between the software and the hardware . For example , when you push the green SCAN button on the scanner , the software can detect whether there is a document in the scanner . If there is no paper , it will alert you . I haven't tried the OCR so I can't comment on it . Instead , I use Adobe Acrobat to do OCR . In general , you shouldn't need an excessively high resolution to do it like some reviewers mentioned ; 300 DPI is sufficient . Higher resolutions will simply require more processing time . I highly recommend the ScanSnap S510 . If you have a lot of paper documents , the ScanSnap S510 can help you .
    • 024 4  I just got this a few days ago , so this isn't a comprehensive review . All I can say at this point is that I've been waiting for years for something like this to come along . I'm a small-business owner with 7 years of client files which I'm frequently required to dig through , and it's no fun . It would be nice if I could do a keyword search and quickly find the one file I'm looking for . And since I also split my work time between home and the office , having a second set of files would be very helpful . Suffice it to say , the Scansnap seems to have been designed for exactly these purposes . The software installed easily ( I usually get nervous when a package includes more than one disc , but no problems here ) , and I was up and running in no time . The OCR works well ( and quickly ) , and seems to recognize text in most common fonts . And it's a nice touch that it creates reasonably-sized PDFs ; a 12 - page searchable PDF consisting of mostly text weighs in at a svelte 550KB . Not bad ! There are some annoyances , of course . It usually gets hung up when you feed it a stack of pages that aren't all the same size . It mangled a few sheets of tissue-like triplicate paper . Converting a PDF to make it searchable is time-consuming , but at least you can set it to convert a batch of files that you've already scanned in , then go get a sandwich or something . The ScanSnap organizer program is decent , but a bit simplistic . I'm already finding little things that it doesn't do , but I wish it did . They are LITTLE things , though . In short , you probably already know if you need something like this . If you do , it's a darn good way to go .
    • 026 4  Update 11 - 2009 I have had the machine since 5 / 2008 and it works great . I would add to my original review that there is an excellent feature where it will ask you after scanning a series of pages if you want to continue scanning . This is great because it allows you to scan a single set of documents of any size , despite the feeder only taking 50 pages at a time . I also noticed the price is now $900 ? ? Truly ludicrous . I know there is a new machine replacing the S510 , the S5100 at $400 and there is an Epson model around the same price . I would stay with Fujitsu and buy the S5100 if I were buying a scanner at this time . Original Comments : I have had the scanner going on 24 hours and it works well . I was using a very slow all-in-one HP machine . The scansnap does in 3 minutes what took my HP over 90 minutes . The scansnap software was easy to install but the ABBYY software will not install on my computer . I keep getting an error code . I scan loan packages which saves me a lot of money , and time on next day air . I have already scanned 2 full packages , 85 pages each and it works great . If you are concerned about the 50 page doc feeder being too small , not to worry as the software will allow you to bundle your larger scans into one single file . If you are e-mailing large files , you will need to use a file service such as [ . . . ] . These services work very well , are secure and password protected . There just isn't any comparison between a scan and a fax document . The scan comes out nearly as good as the original . You know how faxes look and print . Also , sending an e-mail to multiple recipients is much easier than faxing . While toll charges for faxing inside the US might be cheap , calling internationally might not be . Lastly , you will save paper scanning versus faxing . My fax machine has become obsolete . I receive my faxes with [ . . . ] and e-mail all replies . In summary , this is a good machine , probably the best in its price range . Frankly , I think the price could be much lower and I suspect it will be in the future . • 027 4  I normally don't write review but just have to write the review to praise this scanner . I was frustrated with All-in-one machines not up to their potential . No matter it is HP or Brothers , they just does not get it right with their software . I finally bite the bullet to purchase this pretty expensive scanner after seeing all the review . I still had some dault with recent failed experience with Brother 5860CN MFC printer . But just with few days usage , I was very , very happy with my purchase . For the real estate / loan business , I have to scan 20 ~ 50 pages easily pur package with letter / legal size , single or double side pages mixed . This scanner handles it smoothly and quickly . The bundled Adobe 8 standard software makes the combine / edit documents easy and with great size compaction . Most other brands such as Brother used PaperPort software which is the worst choice they can have . I used to have to split documents to several package to send email due to large scanned file size . Now I combined all documents in one package and it's still very small and I have not even use the higher compression choice ! I hope this review can encourge you to make up your mind . Great product from Fujitsu for this product doing one thing to it's best . I bought it through CTI store with $ [ . . . ] after $ [ . . . ] rebate directly from Fujitsu . Billy
    • 029 4  We've had the ScanSnap for going on 4 months now , and I'm a complete convert . I'm one of those people who always had piles of mail on his desk . I have no problem opening mail , it's the filing it somewhere afterward that has been a problem for me . So , until we got this thing , bank statements and ' changes in terms ' forms and shipping invoices and all manner of things just ended up in piles in my office . Some sitting on top of the filing cabinet . : - ) Now , though , I just scan whatever it is and save it to a directory on my computer . The scanner prepends the date and time to the filename it creates when you scan something . So , if you scan a water bill , it will suggest saving it as something like 2008 _ 09 _ 10 _ 14 _ 20 . pdf . I keep the year , month and day and would save it as 2008 _ 09 _ 10 - WaterBill.pdf and save it to my UtilityBills directory . I can find things much faster this way than I can in my actual filing cabinet . I shred everything after I've scanned it , and presto - no more piles of paper . The quality of the scans is excellent . I generally leave the text-recognition off ( makes smaller files with it off ) , but I know I could always print the document and re-scan it with text recognition on if I need to make a searchable document . We've also used it to sign forms when our bank emailed us some PDFs . We printed them , signed them , scanned them back as PDFs and emailed them back to the bank . Done ! Better quality than a fax machine , too . Scanning-wise , I've had surprisingly little trouble getting multiple sheets of paper to go through properly . In the past , I've always fought with cheap fax machines to get them to feed properly . So far , the paper feeding mechanism on this thing has been wonderful . I highly recommend the ScanSnap if , like me , you have trouble organizing all the paper statements that come in to your life .
    • 036 4  I have purchased two of these scanners . The one on my office desk sees almost daily use ; the one at home is used less frequently . Between them , I've scanned well over 25000 sheets . What I like : * Very compact . When the input and output trays are folded in , the scanner uses only 6 x11 of desk space - smaller than a sheet of paper . * Well built . Unlike inexpensive consumer-level scanners , the ScanSnap has a substantial amount of mass . It feels like it has a powerful motor as well as a fairly substantial metal chassis inside . * Very easy to use . There are two buttons on the front - Scan and Power . There is also a silver latch which pops opens the front , allowing the removal of any misfed pages . * Both sides of a page are scanned at once . Blank pages can be automatically removed and skewed images straightened or rotated . Images can be scanned in black and white or in color , and the software can select which is most appropriate . You can set a default page size , or the scanner can set it based upon the document size . Resolution can be set in four different levels , from 75 dpi up to 600 dpi . * It is fast ! I just scanned 31 printed pages in 92 seconds . It took about seven seconds more to finish processing the data on my PC and putting up the thumbnail of the PDF . A faster computer ( mine's nothing special ) would obviously be quicker and eliminate the occasional data-transfer pause while scanning . * The software package is good . A complete OEM version of Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.0 was included with each scanner . Acrobat 9.0 Standard retails for $265 by itself . The ABBY Fine Reader software does a good job of OCR'ing the scanned documents and making them searchable . Lastly , the ScanSnap Organizer helps in parking and retrieving the files . * User replaceable pads and rollers . When the pads and rollers wear out and pages don't feed properly , you can purchase a pad and roller kit and fix the problem yourself . The pads are rated for 50,000 pages ; the rollers for 100,000 . What could be better : * Double feeding . One of my scanners works almost perfectly ; the other double feeds all too frequently . With both my scanners you have to be careful to fan previously stapled pages or the staple holes can pull an extra page through . Most double feeds are caught because of a slight misalignment in the pages . The misfed page appears to be longer than the previous page and this triggers an alert in the software . * Mixed page size . Because of the way that the scanner detects double feeds , it can't handle a stack of mixed size pages . This is a problem when scanning receipts ; business papers are generally letter or legal size . The solution , of course , is to scan each receipt separately . * Imperfect scanning of vertical lines . If you scan a form with vertical lines ( or a piece of graph paper ) you'll see occasional offsets of a fraction of millimeter . There's also occasional color fringing caused by misalignment of C / M / Y colors . This generally isn't a problem for documents , but isn't acceptable for photos . * Not TWAIN compliant . None of the standard software packages ( at least that I've found ! ) contain a way to directly interface to this scanner . The ABBY software must be used to generate a PDF , or tie into Excel , PowerPoint , or Word . It's fairly seamless , but you can't use OmniPage or Textbridge Pro as your OCR program . * Non-standard icons in ScanSnap Organizer . This is just a bad design decision . Whoever wrote ScanSnap Organizer hard-coded some really ugly icons into the program . When you create a subfolder , they're in blue . . . and look really bad if you look at them outside of Organizer . The same with the other directories that it creates . * ScanSnap Organizer only allows one top-level directory to be used . By default , it sets it up in the Documents folder and labels it as My ScanSnap . That can be easily changed . What can't be changed is the fact that you can't have multiple top level directories . . . I'd like to be able to look at files sitting in My ScanSnap and in a different place altogether ( i.e . on another networked computer ) at once . Does it work for me ? For my purpose , it works very well . It's helped me tremendously reducing and organizing my office files . Stuff gets scanned , stored locally , backed up to my server and then automatically encrypted and backed up off-site . When a client calls , a few keystrokes and their information is up on my screen . It would , however , be a mistake to use it to scan in your family photo album . If that's an important feature , you should get a high-quality flatbed scanner instead .
    • 037 4  I tried to use an HP multi-function printer for scanning and it just didn't meet my needs . I have lots of paper to handle , and spend a lot of time creating pdf's from paper documents for distribution . I had direct experience with the Fujitsu 5120c scanner and wondered if this lower cost unit could do what I needed at half the price . It does . Fast scans , with duplex scanning on the fly , makes it perfect for my uses . It is set up to create pdf's directly , and comes with Acrobat Standard . Scans are great , and can be quick unless you need a higher resolution than usual . Occasional misfeeds on the multipage documents are a small issue for me . Best thing to do is make sure staples are removed quickly and the papers are fanned to put some air between them . We did have a faulty installation CD on the second scanner we ordered . Was able to download a copy of that installation program , though it was a bit difficult to find . Installation and operation has been mostly trouble free . Loading up a 10 - 15 page stack of paper , which is printed duplex and getting a quick pdf that can be emailed instantly is worth every penny . Does more than PDF's . We did a large volume of family pictures as well . The variety of sizes were a problem , but we used the clear carrier to scan several at a time . Took a weekend to convert hard copy photos in a huge family album ( boxes actually ) and burn to CD for everyone in the family . Biggest problem was the sudden demand for those cd's from everyone who had any connection at all to the family .
    • 039 4  I ordered this scanner a couple of months ago , and have been using it fairly extensively at work in a Finance dept . I am extremely pleased with this scanner . It is compact , sits neatly on my desk , can fold up when not needed , and is ready on a moment's notice . I just love its simplicity , just pop in a bunch of papers , hit the green PDF button and it whips through them in no time , literally just a few seconds per page . Great that it can scan both sides of the page at the same time . After scanning , it rotates all of the images to be right-side up , it deletes any blank pages ( e.g . blank back-side of scanned pages ) , then prompts me whether I want to give it a custom file name or not ( it automatically proposes a unique name based on system date / time ) , and whether I want to file it in a folder on my PC , pop it into an email , or whatever . Can't beat the speed and convenience . Very simple and well thought out . Unlike the last reviewer , I had no trouble using this scanner with other programs - in my case it worked great with both PaperPort 10 and Omnipage 16 . Of course you can also use it with the provided ScanSnap software , which is also very speedy and convenient . In fact , I prefer ScanSnap for my needs . This scanner is the envy of everyone in the department that sees it . It is very reasonably priced , small and fast , fast fast ! I think it is a great value , and has transformed how I handle paper in the office . I also used it to scan business cards with the provided biz card scanning software . The software can easily send the scanned info into Outlook ( I'm using Outlook 2007 ) . It was OK , but it did have trouble recognizing biz cards with very small fonts , despite my slowing the scan speed down a bit to get the highest quality scan possible . I found myself making a couple of corrections to half the biz cards I scanned . But still worthwhile to use it if you have a big pile of cards to scan , or if this is a regular part of your daily job .
    • 042 4  I found this on Amazon during a search to replace my old scanner . I have had it two weeks and let me just say this scanner is amazing and you should buy one immediatly . I had over 2000 photos that had been in storage and I would scan a few now and then . When I got the new ScanSnap I scanned over 2000 photos in about 2 hours with no problem whatsoever . It took me a while to get used to the menus , but once I did , it is a breeze . I have a collection of business cards from over 30 years . I scanned them in less than 20 min . I have never been more excited about a product in my life . Plus it comes bundled with Adobe Acrobat . BUY IT YOU WON'T REGRET IT ! I read all the reviews on this page and I have nothing negative to say about scanning photos , no problems with jamming , very small footprint . It just works , that plain and simple .
    • 046 4  After reading all of the glowing reviews , I purchased this product at the end of February 2009 with the intent of using it primarily to scan in documents . However , I was in a pinch to digitalize photos for a digital frame that was being given as a gift , so I used it to scan in a few hundred photos . It did OK - as there was some loss of detail , and a lot of the edges of the scanned images were discolored - ( perhaps the unit had gotten too hot ) . So , I'm still in the market for a photo scanner . After the digital picture frame project , I moved on to my original plan - the scanning of documents . I have revised this review from my original - as I played around with the scanner some more and got it to work better . My revised recommendation is just to NOT use the Auto Color Detection option . Documents scanned in color turn out beautifully . Documents that contain just black & white suffer a tremendous loss of clarity under the Auto Color Detection mode , even at the highest quality setting . So , I recommend using the Color setting instead for all scanning , even if you know a lot of it will be just in black and white . Perhaps this means that the PDFs will be larger , but I'd prefer that to the bad quality I was seeing with the B & W mode . I have read that the newer model - the S1500 - does gray-scale ( whereas the S510 does not ) . I am assuming that the gray-scale capability may address the poor quality seen in scanned black & white documents . One more thing : Contrary to what others have said , I could not get find to work in Adobe Reader if I scanned in a document without enabling the OCR setting . When I re-scanned a document with that option on , then it worked . But , be advised that using that option slows down the scanning process quite a bit . But all in all , I do ( now ) think that this is a terrific scanner for documents . I wanted to revised my rating from 4 to 5 stars , but that apparently is not permitted when a reviewer revises a review . REGARDLESS , check out the new model because it may be cheaper . Also check the Fujica website for a rebate form . Also be advised that it cannot scan anything longer than 14 inches .
    • 048 4  Most of the reviews have it right . There are some minor flaws , but overall this is a great product . If you can find their main site , watch the video and see a demonstration . It's fast . There are four levels of quality for scanning : Normal , Better , Best , and Excellent . I don't know why they rate Excellent as faster than Best . But still , I usually scan at Best and it's a good speed and quality scan . I don't see why their cleaning kit is necessary . I use Windex Glass Wipes and that does the trick . Watch the glass because over time , some ink and dust buildup will cause scan lines . If you see strange lines in your images , then you should check for that buildup and use the wipes to clean the glass . I can go more than a thousand sheets ( 50 sheet stacks each ) without a jam by fanning the pages like they show in the manual . I pinch one end of a stack , slide the other end along my finger so the sheets staircase on edge - if you can understand that . Then I pinch the staircased end while loosening the other grip . And I gently place them in and they're off . It's so easy . But some paper will take better than others .
    • 050 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) When I heard about the concept of a sheet-fed scanner , I started looking for one . Our legal group was laboriously scanning contracts a page at a time via a flat bed scanner . We found this nifty little device , read the reviews , decided to give it a shot , and the legal group is now much happier . Pros : * Fast . Even with the quality turned up , this scans an entire contract in the time the our Canon flatbed takes to warm up . * Easy . Once you get the software installed and tweak any settings you feel like tweaking , scanning involves hitting a green button on the face of the scanner and clicking a single button on the screen . The provided software gives you a thumbnail of each document , lets you easily rename the documents , lets you double-click to view in Adobe or a program of your choice , lets you drag-and-drop documents to the desktop , etc . * Cute . Okay , ' cute ' is probably not a selling point for most IT departments , but it really is ! It has a very small footprint and a clean design in black and silver . The blue power LED lights up in welcome when you open the document feed cover . * Paper jams are easy to clear . There's a single silver button that gives easy access to the paper path . * No Engrish . The manual and software is refreshingly free of mutilated Japanese to Engrish translations . I only noticed one or two minor translation glitches . * Good OCR software . I experimented with searchable PDFs , and the software does a good job of text recognition . * Good software . I'll be honest , one reason I chose the Fujitsu over a similar Canon product is because I have never liked the look , feel , or usage of Canon's software . I don't know what the Canon would have been like , but I like the Fujitsu software . The out-of-the-box defaults work well , the settings are easy to tweak if you need to , and the ScanSnap Manager is intuitive and easy . There are many , many software options that I haven't tried and probably will never try , but it's nice to have them there just in case I ever need them . * Can scan receipts . It comes with a plastic sleeve that you can put clippings or smaller pieces of paper inside of for scanning . Cons : * Minorly annoying software installation . There are three different disks to install from - - four if you count a disk full of trial software . Some of the installation processes have been tweaked since the manual was originally printed , so there are extra paper inserts to describe the new steps . If you get confused , look through all the manuals and inserts until you find screenshots that match what is happening on the screen . * Doesn't have a TWAIN driver , as has been stated before , but who cares ? It works seamlessly and quickly with the provided software , so this is only a theoretically downside for me . * Not flat bed quality . If you want exact duplicates of documents without noise or artifacts , get a flat bed . If you want fast and easy scans and are okay with slightly lower quality , go for it . * Can jam on faster feed modes . The first document I tried was a 4 - page contract that had been stapled in one corner . Turning down the speed , AKA turning up the scan quality , and changing the feed direction solved the problem . * Can jam on curled papers . A packet that has been rolled will not feed well until you flatten the papers a bit . I'd change my review to 4 stars if I could , but I'm still quite happy .

    • 052 4  I purchased this scanner after reading all of the great reviews on Amazon . I have now had it for about one month and it has worked better than I imagined it could . I use it primarily in my business for converting loan documents such as applications , tax returns , Word documents , etc . into PDF files for E-mailing to banks and clients . It came with Adobe Acrobat Version 8.0 and the combination has been fantastic . I can scan the documents , combine them into a single file , reorder them , bookmark sections , and then E-mail the final product . A really great side benefit has been how well the ScanSnap S510 scans my old printed snapshots . I have about 4,000 photos of my children as they were growing up that I took prior to digital photos being available . I have scanned over 3,500 of them to JPG format . I have had almost no jams , and the resulting product is great . I scan the photos using the next to best resolution and it scans about 35 pictures per minute . I will now be able to give each of my children a copy of all of my photos to do with as they wish . I love this scanner . It has been one of the best purchases I have made this year . In all honesty I can not think of a single negative . I did keep my old sheet scanner for the rare times I need to scan a page from a book or magazine that I don't want to destroy .
    • 054 4  I am happy to agree with the other positive reviews . This thing works ! Hooked up to my new Thinkpad , it is a rocket with only one paper jam due to 2 pages stapled together ( my bad ) and 2 pages that simply refused to scan as 2 . Clearing paper jams is a snap and the software is intuitive without being annoying . Everything should work this well . I am going to buy a second one for my home . It does not replace a scanner for photographs , but for documents , bills , receipts , etc , it is perfect . It corrects skewed feeds and it almost always auto-rotates correctly - even when one sheet is vertical with the following sheet horizontal . And one can set it for duplex ( auto 2 sided scanning ) or one sided simplex . When set to the former , it can be set to auto delete a blank page . When a multi-page scan has one sided and two sided pages mixed in - no problem - blank pages deleted . All in all , a pleasure to use - well worth the price .
    • 059 4  I am not an expert , but I did search for quite awhile and read as many reviews as I could on various scanners with ADF . This one kept getting the best reviews for the combination of price , ease of use , speed , and features . I purchased four of them under a grant program , and have not been disappointed . Setup was easy . The software ( including Adobe Acrobat 8 - a terrific deal ! ) installed smoothly and I was ready to go . I have scanned numerous 30 - 50 page documents and am very happy with the speed , accuracy and quality . The duplex scanning deletes any blank backsides , and conversion to . pdfs , Word , or Excel was easy . The OCR was accurate when the originals were clean . If not , the optical recognition did the best it could , and I couldn't fault it for it's guesses ! This machine is a good deal . After purchasing four of them under a grant for others , and trying it out , I purchased one more for myself !
    • 072 4  I have been using the ScanSnap S510 for well over a year at a low pace ; 40 to 50 pages a day . After 9 month , the feeder started to jam . I called the support center and they told me to clean the small rolls . It seemed strange to me as I don't use the scanner extensively . My HP printers are well over three years and I never had any problems with the feeder . After cleaning the scanner , I still had the problem and the only solution is to replace the parts . When it worked it was great but as soon as the feeder started to jam it became unusable to scan large documents ( 40 pages ) . I am looking for a replacement right now .
    • 081 4  So I read all the reviews on this product and I inadvertently developed some pretty intense expectations . This product blows all of those away . Sure it's a pretty penny to spend on something that only serves one purpose . I'll probably really use this hardcore for the first few months that I own it ( while I scan the last 6 years of paperwork I've accumulated so I can go paperless ) but I think this is going to turn out to be well worth it . I picked up the scanner just over an hour ago . I got it all setup , configured , and I've already scanned close to 500 pages ( of varying size , color and thickness ) . This scanner can really tear it up . 5 stars !
    • 086 4  This is the best scanner I have ever purchased , period . I've had lots of scanners all the way from Visioneer's old sheet-fed PaperPort ( which was a great little scanner , by the way ) to flatbeds , to multi-function units . The last scanner I purchased was a Brother MFC with duplex scanning , and it works , but it's a pain because of the software , and then when Vista came out , the duplex function didn't work . I bought this scanner based on the reviews , and today I scanned about 750 sheets of paper . Worked perfectly . Software , including full version of Adobe Acrobat 8 , is great . Just load in the paper and push the button and WOW ! It works as advertised ! And the footprint is small . It sits next to my monitor , and is so convenient . When not in use , you can fold everything up and it looks good and is small . I scanned color documents and text documents . Single-sided and double-sided sheets . Worked great on all of them . I am very , very pleased with this purchase . And like I said , I have owned and used dozens of scanners , and I say if you ever buy a scanner , get this one . It is well worth the expense ! !
    • 098 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I work with documents for a living and often need to scan hundreds of pages of documents from a variety of sources in a single session . The ScanSnap has improved my life immeasurably . The fastest speed scan is blindingly fast , but you need perfect source material to use it - - if your document was stapled , on lightweight paper , or otherwise imperfect , the scanner will suck up pages so fast that you will have a jam or skipped pages due to more than one page feeding at a time . Fortunately , the second-fastest setting is still phenomenally fast and virtually eliminates all such paper-feed problems . In addition to stacks of paper , I also use the ScanSnap for some non-standard uses with great success . For instance , I have cut books apart with an exacto and scanned the pages so that I can search the book . The scanner had very little problem accepting the cut pages , even when some edges were ragged . I also cut up some magazines ( for the same reason ) and the scanner handled the much lighter paper stock with no problem . The software is fine , though not great . It does allow you pretty good recovery from mishaps - - i.e . , you don't have to start over if you hit a paper jam or other complication . I don't use the OCR so I can't comment on its strength or weakness - - I use and strongly recommend Acrobat for this purpose . Its OCR is the best I have tried and it's a must for anyone who has serious document management needs . Fortunately , the ScanSnap comes with Acrobat 8 Standard , and for most users , this is plenty of power . Note that Acrobat 9 Standard cost $269 new , so this is a significant addition to the value of the scanner , which is pricier than many other models , but well worth it , in my opinion .
    • 099 4  I work with documents for a living and often need to scan hundreds of pages of documents from a variety of sources in a single session . • 102 4  I did hours of research while looking for a scanner . I wanted one that could scan large numbers of documents , and do both sides at the same time . I wanted on that would turn these documents into searchable / editable PDFs . I wanted one that rarely jammed . I wanted one that was reasonably fast . I wanted one that was reliable . Well , I found it . This scanner is everything I wanted and more . I actually rave about this thing to my friends , who just give me a blank look and then ask each other when I lost my mind . Seriously , it doesn't get better than this . Every review should have something at least a little critical in it , I guess . . . if I was * forced * , I suppose I would complain that it doesn't seem to scan images particularly well , although I really haven't played with the settings much . ( The defaults are nearly flawless for virtually all the scanning I do . ) Oh , and it very occasionally grabs two pages instead of one . ( Usually happens when you don't take care when removing staples . ) Anyway . . . BUY this thing . It will change your life . Ya . Really . I did my taxes in 1 day because I had everything scanned into my computer . Simply awesome .
    • 103 4  I really like this scanner for its ease of use , its speed and its compact size . It came with quick start instructions and was easy to setup in less than an hour from the time I opened the box . A 6 ' USB cord was included and that was just long enough for my desk layout but some people might want a slightly longer cord . The scan function is easily accessed with a one touch button on the scanner or by right clicking on the tray icon on the screen . The sheet feeder works well although twice it grabbed the first two pages simultaneously when scanning a group of 6 - 15 pages that were thin legal pad paper and had been previously folded . As a test , I tried the same group of papers with the sheet feeder on my HP LaserJet 3015 and the LaserJet had no problem . The scanner easily handled post it notes taped to pages and torn corners on pages without jamming . It was wonderfully simple to unjam when I left a staple in one of the papers I was scanning . I pulled an easily visible silver lever on the front of the scanner and removed the paper . The scanner came with Adobe Acrobat Standard which makes it easy to combine PDF files or change the order of the pages scanned . However , this scanner is so fast that I find it easier to simply put the pages in the correct order and rescan them . The quality of the scanned images looks fine to me . Pencil notes written out in the field on yellow legal paper are legible . I haven't used the OCR or Organizer functions that come with the scanner . Overall , I am really pleased with the performance of this scanner .
    • 106 4  We were always using HP Scanjets in the office , just recently I purchased the HP equivalent to this Fujitsu Model and it's nice but jams or takes extra pages by mistake all too often when scanning multiple pages . The only nice thing about the HP was that it was fast and could send the PDF directly to the PDF Page and then you can email it from Adobe . I purchased this Fujitsu based on the great reviews and it's a wonderful scanner . Rarely any jams or mistakes in picking up multiple pages . Nice and easy to scan any file to PDF . This is the way scanning should be done . Great scanner !
    • 112 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I purchased this scanner a little over a year ago , and it performed beautifully . . . . until a week ago when I got a standard paper-feed jam on a single sheet I was trying to scan . As I have done many times before , I opened the front , removed the sheet and reset the scanner . It fed the sheet in a couple inches and then gave me an error message stating Failed to calibrate the scanner . The optical system on the scanner is in error I tried another sheet with the same error message . After several more tries , I called Fujitsu Tech Support who walked me through cleaning the glasses , rollers , etc . . I told her I had already done that , but we did it again . That did not fix the error , so she said the scanner would have to be repaired , and she would send a repair estimate . The repair estimate arrived : $260 labor + $49 return shipping + parts . So , a minimum of $309 plus whatever it costs for me to ship it to them . I paid a little over $400 for the scanner in the first place , and I certainly am not going to pay close to that , if not more , to get it fixed when I could buy a new one for about the same price - or so I thought . Fujitsu is no longer making this model , and whoever has them left in stock is selling them for double their original retail price . There is a new replacement model for about the same price as the original S510 - the model S1500 - which I'm finding out is a piece of junk from the reviews I've read . It stands to reason , because why else would retailers have jacked up the price of the S510 if the replacement model is as good or better . I have been looking online for about a week trying to find any help or repair sites , manuals , anything . There is very little out there . I've even posted this problem to the Fujitsu forums and have gotten no responses . As much as I really loved the speed of this scanner , I will not buy another . Any scanner that is so fragile that a single mis-fed sheet can cause a $300 + repair is not something I'm willing to invest in ever again . I caution everyone considering a Fujitsu scanner to take my situation into account before purchasing .

    • 114 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Love this product . It is fast and is helping us go paperless . Occasionally it will pull more than one sheet . You can hand feed it or go into the document and add pages that were missed after you scan them separately . I would highly recommend this product .
    • 129 4  I have been scanning large amounts of documents for several years . I bought the S510 about three weeks ago and I have already scanned over 3700 pages . No problems and it's very fast . The quality scans are great . This is the best investment I have made in years . It's great .
    • 134 4  This scanner far exceeds my expectation and I never expected it to do photos as well as it does . I purchased this with the intent of using it as a document scanner for archiving bills , contracts etc which it does very well . Reading reviews about how photos are too stiff for it did not stop me from purchasing this as I have a high end Epson flatbed photo scanner for that purpose . Well turns out the scansnap s510 zips through photos flawlessly . The scans are about 90% as good as the 32 bit dedicated photo scanner which is really pretty amazing . I am about half way though scanning a book case of old photo albums . Over 1600 photos so far and the only two Jams I had is when I put in too fat a stack of photos so the stack did not make it to the pickup roller . No way would I do this one by one on a flat bed ! What is really amazing is some of these photos came off the old sticky glue type albums where the photo pages are one big sheet of adhesive with a plastic cover and the photos all but tore getting them out ( most lost 1 / 2 - 2 / 3 the paper thickness to the stickum ) ; even these went through ! I don't know how many years the old prints would last till they are to faded to use but it sure is nice to have the old photos join the ranks of my newer digital photos Only reason I didn't give it a 5 is it would be nice to have multiple programmable scan buttons rather than one programmable button . The software is nice and makes it easy to control the function of that button but it would be nice to have separate buttons for preprogrammed profiles like document , photo , send to printer , and send to email . Last thing , I am shocked how well the OCR function works when it makes PDFs
    • 160 4  My other scanner is a HP ScanJet model 5550c with an ADF ( see my detailed review on Amazon ) . To summarize , the ADF works okay but the software made by HP is just horrible . I literally spent hours of time de-bugging and re-installing the software , and it never quite worked as intended . I have put up with it until now because I was never convinced there was anything better out there under $500 . While no product is perfect , this Fujitsu scanner is much easier to use than the HP and the software is much more intuitive without all the bugs and unpredictable results I had with the 5550c . It's a bit more pricey , but worth it . The Amazon price is pretty good on this product . [ . . . ]
    • 162 4  As a mortgage broker , I handle a LOT of documents . Files routinely get bloated with tax returns , purchase contracts , pay stubs and disclosures . The lenders where we send our loans are more and more using paperless submissions - - either by fax or e-mail . Fax is problematic , unreliable and slow , with many documents in a 50 page submission often going missing . We have been using an HP all-in-one scanner / fax / printer / copier , but the image quality is terrible , it is slow and the software is unreliable . I knew I had to change my document management , so I did some research , and settled on the Fujitsu - - reviews were good , and the price seemed reasonable . This is one of the best pieces of technology I have bought in years . Installation was child's play , and the scanner has worked flawlessly from the first page . I can put 50 pages into the chute and press a button . The scanner knows whether it's a one sided document or two , and rips through the stack at close to 20 pages a minute . It makes a very high quality , small PDF file . The only caution is that if one page of a document is folded ( like an 11 x 17 sheet folded into a 4 page document ) , you have to use the document carrier ; the feed rollers don't like the folded page . Really , it's not big deal - - and a small price to pay for the absolutely reliable feed mechanism . Finally , this little gem has a TINY footprint - - about 6 x 11.5 . It lives on a credenza in my partner's office , with a 16 ft . USB cable going to her computer . It's small , cheap , reliable and always available . I am in love . Joe Parsons
    • 164 4  A lot of people have said that it can only scan to PDFs , but if you set the color option to Color , JPEG becomes an option for the file format . In a few weeks , I turned a filing cabinet of papers , business cards and receipts into PDFs , and it was so satisfying that I'm trying to find more things to scan now . The interface seemed restrictive at first since I was used to a flatbed scanner with Twain , but I got used to it too . Once I defined different modes for receipts , business cards , etc . , all I had to do was switch between them , put a stack of things in the ADF and press the big green button . I could leave for a few minutes , come back and find a searchable PDF in the folder where I wanted it . I have had a few problems with jams , but they have all occured with papers that had a lot of creases in them . There is a simple latch that opens up the scanner , freeing any jammed papers . The only complaint I have regarding jams is that when I load a piece of paper that is longer than about 15 inches , the scanner stops and displays the error message indicating a jam . It would be nice to be able to scan arbitrarily long pages , but this is almost never an issue . My only other complaints are that ( 1 ) you can't arbitrarily set the resolution of the scan . Your options are something like ok , good , better , and best ; also , ( 2 ) if you choose to create searchable PDFs , the OCR runs after the scanning is done , and you can't continue scanning until it is done . This is a minor inconvenience , but it seems to be an unnecessary one . Overall , I am as satisfied with this scanner as I have ever been with a piece of technology .

  • 021 4  Awesome is only word I can describe about this scanner . I am absolutely going paperless and scanning everything I get in mail ( except junk ) . I spend almost 5 days in holidays and scanned every paperwork I recevied for 2007 , now that's almost 1200 + pages and put them on CD . I am scanning every check and every bill of 2008 and shredding the paper copies . I am in RealEstate and Stocks and Since IRS now accepts photocopies ( what was last time you really needed original copy to send ? , I don't remember ) , I have scanned over 1200 pages and will be scanning another 600 - 800 in next week . This scanner has scanned every document ( both sides ) and made a searchable PDF . It comes with Adobe Standard and Scanscap organiser which is perfect with this scanner . My friends were amazed with this scanner and I am sure they must have bought it by now . Small compact unit , duplex color fast scanning ( 18 pages / min ) and searchable PDF . . . Perfect Combo . . My best purchase of 2007 ! . Thanks Fujitsu , I love this product . . I am going paperless in 2008 with S510 . .
    • 040 4  Our company purchased the Fujitsu Scansnap S510 over a year ago to assist us in going paperless for my satalite office . Almost everything that comes in or out of our office is scanned to our corporate network . Most originals are discarded . I liked it so much that we bought one for our home ; now we're paperless . My husband even uses it . This little machine can scan multi-sized pages , puts them into a single PDF file ; you rename and drag and drop into your folders on your desktop or keep in My scan files . It's so quick ! ! It scans in color , front & back of pages , multi-sized documents , has only a couple replacement parts , very inexpensive to run , and very compact ! I would HIGHLY recommend this scanner to anyone that would like to DE-JUNK their lives ! !
    • 058 4  This scanner worked great and was a lot less expensive than any of the service groups . Able to copy all of the family photos ( she got half in the divorce ) in one evening . This was thousands of photos of many different sizes .
    • 138 4  phenonomenal addition to my work desk . Scan and email by touching two buttons . Incredibly fast and effortless .
    • 171 4  Purchased this in March ' 09 from Amazon cause it costs twice as much here . Got back to Dubai and installed it in the office admin dept . It's a genie ! Scans in BW and Color and Single side as well as Double sides . We wanted it to scan contracts ans legal documents that we need to archive and email . The scanning speed it very fast and also clear . Absolutely worth every cent . Would strongly recommend it for Small and Medium size companies .
    • 174 4  The scan snap is truly amazing . I have scanned hundreds of pages of files in a very short time . This product scans both sides and automatically makes your files into PDF files . Scan time is so fast that it's hard to believe . I would recommend this product whole heartedly .

  • 034 4  I love this scanner . It's small . It's EASY to use . Easy to set up . Scans jpg's and PDF's . Scans both sides . I use the scanner in a small business enviornment . We are small manufacture that ships LTL and full truckload orders all over the 48 states . We scan every invoice , every POD , and every anything that relates to running the business . Me best guess is 60 - 180 pages per day . I have found only two problems with the scanner . 1 . ) Unless you are scanning crisp fresh paper , the autofeed will only work with 5 - 9 pages at a time . Anything that has been tri-folded for mailing , don't expect 25 - 50 page autofeed . 2 . ) Non-standard size paper . We have a couple companies we work with that send dot-matrix invoices . These are 6 x 9 pieces of paper . I have not found a way to scan multiple pages at once . I need to scan them one page at a time . Due to these two issues , it makes the process a little slow . But when you place 20 page fax in the scanner , it is beautiful to watch the speed .
    • 028 4  I bought one for a construction office where they needed to scan and send 20 to 30 page PDFs up to the main office every few days . The first scanner we bought sucked . Pages took for ever and the file size was huge ( 20 megs + ) . Then we bought the Scansnap . It has met our expectations . Fast , easy to use and it comes with a full version of Acrobat ( $200 + value ) . After it performed flawlessly on the job site for the past four months , I treated myself to one as a Christmas present . I am running Vista on my home computer and after downloading the Vista driver all was fine . I am very happy with my purchase .
    • 061 4  I was looking for a scanner to deploy to multiple offices that would be reliable , low maintenance , and easy to use . The fujitsu has proven to be all of that and more . I have been using some of these since May 2006 and have yet to replace or repair any of them . Each of these units scans anywhere from 50 to 500 pages per day and work flawlessly . Also with the included Acrobat 8.0 ( $250 application for free ) you can do just about anything to any document .
    • 083 4  For those who need grayscale scans and Vista 32 / 64 bit software , the S510 has an upgraded model . . . . the S1500 for another $100 . All software is upgraded . . . I await my machine so I can not yet say to what effect .

  • 065 4  This scanner has been busily scanning thousands , yes thousands , of insurance EOB's onto a server for permanent archiving instead of saving assorted size papers . It has been wonderful to use and very few problems . I probably scan about 100 - 200 pieces / day with it . It doesn't do ID cards very well so I have a fi - 6130 waiting in the wings to be installed for front desk insurance and ID card scanning . The carrier sheet that came with it almost 2 years ago is still going strong but a little marked up with ink from making notes on receipts before scanning . I do wish there were an easier way to switch between color scanning ( business receipts , copies of statements with stamps , etc . ) and B / W with OCR for searchable archiving of PDF's . I'm anxious to order an S1500 and see how it performs compared to this workhorse .
    • 035 4  This little scanner amazingly does what it advertises , unlike many gadgets on the market . And it does it very fast . If you value your time this scanner is the one to get to go paperless . One con : the lowest setting gives poor OCR ( for searching ) . However , the next highest setting is nearly as fast and works well . Bought at web best price from Ctistore and had nary a problem .
    • 070 4  This is the best scanner I have every used ( of course unless you need a flatbed scanner ) ! It almost never jams and scans both sides of any size paper extremely fast and is very accurate with good quality . I have not tried scanning pictures but for all types of documents , the scanner is flawless . The OCR software is not great but what OCR software is ? It has helped me reduce years of accumulated business cards and various papers . Highly recommended !

  • 088 4  Besides the scanner being great , the package includes a standard copy of Adobe Acrobat - not just the Adobe Acrobat Reader - and the high-end OCR software made by ABBYY FineReader . The scanner is very compact , but opens easily and has pull-outs to support legal size input or output . In fact , you can scan any size input by setting the scanning software options - which is easy to do . There are levels of scanning detail you can use depending on what you need . It scans both sides of a document with one pass and will remove blank sheets if you want . The conversion from a clean document to Microsoft Word is a 10 . The standard version of Acrobat lets you made PDF documents that can be searched by keyword . Acrobat lets you convert the PDF to images such as JPEG and TIFF . There are lots more features I haven't used yet , but this machine is just what you want if you need document scanning . Thanks to all the other reviewers for convincing me that this was a good buy . Oh , BTW , if you just need image scanning without OCR the scan speed for double-sided documents is about 18 pages a minute . They also supply a transparent holder if you need to scan small pieces of paper , like notes you took on a napkin at lunch .
    • 094 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I'm not an expert on computer scanners but I can honestly say that I can't imagine a scanner better than this . I am sure they exist but I don't know WHY you would need it . This things scans SUPER fast . . . . . BOTH sides . . . . and in color ! It's saved as a PDF and I store it on my hard drive . I no longer keep bills , documents , etc . Everything gets scanned and it's easy to do . I bought ONE in September and am buying TWO more . . . . especially since they are $50 less than the Sept . price ! No issues or problems with it . Just don't feed it crumpled paper . . .

  • 090 4  I have been using the product for about 6 months . Previously I had been frustrated with my H + P flatbed scanner - - lots of document jams , very slow start up and scanning times , and many software crashes . The S510 has been a breeze and has really improved my productivity . I scan a LOT of documents for my paperless medical practice - - anything from single sheets to entire 900 page medical charts . This little machine handles it all . Very fast , double-sided scanning with automatic detection , and quick , intuitive software . I save most of the files to PDF , but I occasionally scan right to my printer or scan to email - - all of these features are great . I haven't tried scanning for editable text yet . Nice compact footprint on my desk . Quiet function . The only thing I can possible say is that the outfeed tray should be a little wider - - pages tend to push each other a bit , occasionally causing a stack to fall onto the floor . Really not a big deal if you're sitting next to the machine to occasionally reach over and adjust the stack . Overall , 5 + stars especially considering the reasonable price .
    • 030 4  For the price , I was actually really surprised how fast it works . The only problem I encountered was when I tried to scan in a large quantity of pages . Sometimes I had to play around with the pages so they would go through . From my experience the max pages you should put in at once would be no more than 30 . Other then that , I am very happy with it . For its price it's definately the best quality product out there . If you need something that handles more volume and won't jam on you , you'll have to spend at least twice as much . It's also very compact and doesn't take up much desk space , which is definately a plus .
    • 045 4  This machine was very fast and very user friendly . I loved that it was compact size also . Most definitely a great little scanner .
    • 053 4  I work in real estate as an abstractor in Ohio . I had tons of files taking over my home office until I bought this scanner . An Attorney that I do some work for has 5 of these in his office and suggested I get one . I am so glad that I took his advice b / c this this thing has been a life savor ! I wasn't crazy about the included software at first but have grown to like it . I have title work that sometimes includes copies over 100 pages long and this scanner has no problem handling the load . Other than an occasional jam , I have had no problems with this scanner . I would highly recommend this product to anyone interested . - Jason Roush Ironton , Ohio
    • 056 4  This scanner is incredible . It has been an incredible time saver vs . flat bed scanning items and vs . faxing items to my email address so that I can have an electronic copy . It has been invaluable for scanning notes rather than retyping them into Word . The pdf feature is great . I wish I had known about the product earlier .
    • 068 4  It's fast . It works great . It's a no brainer to operate . It has a small footprint . I love my scansnap . This model doesn't handle thin , odd size , or sticky ( newly printed ) papers perfectly , but overall it's a great scanner .
    • 078 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) It works great . The only thing I can't get it to do is let me stack multiple single invoices and scan them each to individual . pdf files . Other than that I think it's great

    • 091 4  This is a wonderful compact scanner ! It was so simple to set up , easy to use , fast , and has a very small footprint . I would recommend it to anyone needing a desktop scanner for everyday use .
    • 119 4  Love it , but I have to boot into XP to run it . Oh well .
    • 140 4  We handle alot of business electronically and needed a reliable scanner to transfer paper documents into PDFs . The ScanSnap does an excellent job ! It's quick , easy to use and duplexes - - which makes my job so much easier . Also love that it's compact - - doesn't take up alot of desk space !
    • 148 4  Installing the software and setting up the Snapscan was a breeze . You can pick and choose which of the software applications that you want to use .
    • 165 4  I have been using this unit for over a year now for my business and words cannot express how great this machine is . I scan in all documents , bills , receipts , notes , etc . , . and save them to my computer - comes in very handy when someone misplaces something in their filing cabinet . I scan and then shred and then use www.mozy.com to back up via the internet - a true paperless office and my filing cabinet is collecting dust - have not opened it in 6 + months . Talked my BIL into this machine and he loves it as well . Well worth the investment if you have bills and other items you want to scan in and keep records of . Only fault , and it is minor , is that it sometimes has issues with different size documents

  • 092 4  I purchased this scanner for several reasons , the most important being clean copy when I have to fax a document . Now I can scan it into pfd format and email right from the same screen . This scanner comes with the full version of Adobe so I can edit any document that I receive . I also purchased this to rid my office of paper clutter . I will scan and put to disk all documents relating to my clients file and have a hard copy in case my pc ever crashes . The scanner is quick and efficient . I highly recommend puchasing this product .
    • 055 4  Was easy to set up , and easy to use . I appreciated the included software , especially Adobe Acrobat . I am slowly going through all 8 of my file drawers and boxes and putting everything I can on my computer .
    • 067 4  The feeder jams at anything over two sheets of paper . If a piece of paper has a staple hole , the feeder jams . If a piece of paper was ever folded , the feeder jams . The manufacturer will not take the product back , so if you get one with a bad feeder you are stuck . I see all the great reviews , but my experience with the product has been very bad .
    • 071 4  I have this thing for over a year now . All my files get scanned and labeled as soon as they hit my desk . You wanna find something ? go to the windows search desktop and find it in seconds . Got rid of huge filing cabinets . Its fast , super fast . Great product .
    • 080 4  Fantastic product , great features , comes with a full version of Adobe , scans fast , handles documents and photos , great quality . Highly recommended .
    • 097 4  I am very pleased with this purchase . This is by far the best and easiest to use scanner I have ever used . I use it in my office . The copies are great and it scans both sides of multi-page documents with ease . This is not a picture scanner however so if that is what you need you may want to search further
    • 108 4  I would highly recommend this product . Easy to set up and very easy to use . Far and away the best scanner option out there given the price . I'm buying another for the office .
    • 111 4  This scanner really is fantastic . I have owned it for a month , and I am using it to scan old records so that I can be pretty much paperless . I especially like its ability to scan both sides of a document at the same time and in color . This scanner was a snap to set up , and the software is very simple . I recommend it . Worth the price .
    • 115 4  Love this product . It is fast and is helping us go paperless . Occasionally it will pull more than one sheet . You can hand feed it or go into the document and add pages that were missed after you scan them separately . I would highly recommend this product .
    • 118 4  I have tons of peripheral products and upgraded to Windows 7 32bit Ultimate and was surprised there is no support . This thing is a boat anchor now . Oh well , I guess I'll use my old Epson scanner for a while . It is three years old , but Epson was nice enough to patch together a W7 driver for it . Come on Fujitsu !
    • 121 4  It is so quick and easy to scan documents and then decide where and what to do with them . Multiple documents scan in moments rather than opening a typical scanner and setting each page separately . As a realtor , with lots of documents to share , I love my Scansnap !
    • 123 4  An excellent product in a small package . I have been using it for a long time now and I have been able to digitize not only a lot of paper work but some of my books too . Very easy to use . A free copy of acrobat is a bonus . Expensive but worth the money .
    • 126 4  I am very pleased with this product . It is compact enough to sit on my desk and not take up a lot of space . Very easy to use . Glad I purchased this .
    • 132 4  I bought this product because my accountant referred me to this . I am thankful for his reference and of course to this product . This product has made my office a paperless one . Now , I dont have any more paper clutters on my home office desk . All the information is scanned , stored and off to recycle . This is a true time saver . I have scanned over thousand pages now and I am glad I got it .
    • 137 4  I have had this scanner for over a year now , and it still amazes me . Buy it , you will not be dissapointed . I used to hate scanning , now it is easy and the quality of the documents is great .
    • 156 4  This is a great machine . Fast easy to set up and operate . Worth every penny I paid for it . All pro no con . It scans super fast and never miss's a page . If you need a scanner , this is it .
    • 169 4  This scanner is the best , it's compact and fast . I needed this for work and it has made everything a lot easier .
    • 175 4  So quick and easy to use . I had no idea scanner would work this great . Copies are clearly scanned only problem with it is you cannot put too many papers in at once they all scan together .
    • 177 4  very very good , well worth the money , using for filess office system . I have scanned and scanned with it and have gotten rid of my files now
    • 178 4  I have owned this for about six months and it is very good machine . Very fast and easy to use . I was at a clinic today and I noticed they had a scansnap on a number of the desks in the clinic .
    • 179 4  This scanner came highly recommended and did not disappoint . It has a small foot print , even when opened for scanning . While it takes a bit of time to set up software , once it is up and running , it is easy to use . A welcome addition to my small office , I am considering buying one for my home .

  • 109 4  I am a long suffering PaperPort 11.0 user . A very unstable and unsupported product that I used with a Kodak scanner to go paperless . A friend suggested the S510 as an alternative . I couldn't be happier . After loading a few of the included applications , it works flawlessly . I was able to replace our old Acrobat 5.0 with the included Adobe Acrobat 8.0 . It's sort of like getting a $100 discount on the S510 .

    • 124 4  I have been using this scanner at work for about 1 month . It has worked very well for me . It does have some problems when you try to scan two different sized sheets together . It has a hard time determining the size of the second sheet but it will let you rescan the last sheet . Otherwise it has functioned very well and is very fast . I would rate it a 5 star but it is not twain compatible so you have to use the software that comes with it . This is not a big problem since the software does a good enough job .

      • 145 4  i'm a cpa . . . and . . . as you know . . . our motto is keep a file . . . on everything . . . i was so overwhelmed with archive files because i'm sure if i toss it . . . either a crook will get private info . . . or i'll need the info for something . . . yes . . . i'm a bit paranoid / neurotic . . . lol . . . so . . . i bought snapscan and it has worked out fantastic . . . all the really old stuff was scanned and archived on 2 separate portable hard drives . . . one for backup . . . the only thing that i'd suggest is some sort of database . . . with large amounts of files . . . it's difficult create an archiving system . . .
        • 117 4  Quickly and reliably scans multiple pages . Occasionally has some hick-ups , but as good as modern technology allows . As far as ease of use , I rated a 4 because sometimes the scan button stops working after I scan a lot of items , and I need to reboot my PC , but that may be a PC configuration issue . Generally very good product , I'd buy again .

      • 152 4  This product seems to be a tiny little work horse . It appears sturdy with use and is quick and efficient as promised . The ADF continues to pull through multiple sheets of paper so you will have to manual feed most of your work . Rack2 - filer software requires activation if purchased and I think Fujitsu may be inclined to give very , very limited amount of times for activation . CardMinder v3.1 software that comes with this product for reading scanned business cards will prove to be a very painful experience when you try to put it to use . Don't be blinded by the light , take a good look around and decide carefully what you want . Take the negative things said on this site about this scanner seriously . The scanner works fine , and will do the job promised , mostly , but if I had to do it all over again I would probably choose another scanner .
        • 016 4  This scanner works so well I wanted to add my two cents . I've been scanning my home office documents for two years and I know what makes this a time consuming chore : 1 ) slow scans 2 ) paper jams 3 ) slow software 4 ) software that tries to help you name and save your documents ( but only ends up making it a brutal and tedious task ) . Fujistu did a great job with all of these . I could not be happier . ( One note : Don't bother installing the free trial of Rack2 - Filer - it's pathetic . )
        • 033 4  I've had this scanner for a few weeks now and am very impressed with it . I've scanned in a good amount of documents already and have pushed it to see how well it would perform . One document I had was nearly 50 pages and I scanned them all at once . The scanner didn't jam and didn't pull in multiple pages together . It worked perfectly . It is relatively fast and I love the duplex , delete blank pages , and auto-straighten features . The software is good , but I would like more control and configurability , but it does the job . The only thing I wish it has was a twain interface to be able to use other applications , but overall I am very satisfied with the Fujitsu S510 scanner and would buy it again .
        • 064 4  After one year of almost daily use in a busy office , this great little scanner has performed flawlessly . We've scanned thousands of multi-page documents . It'll skip blank pages , scan two-sided documents in one pass , tells you if it didn't find anything to scan , and quickly produces a pdf of your documents . It's small , light , fast , quiet , dependable , and a snap to use .
        • 073 4  I am impressed with this scanner ; I received it about 3 weeks ago for my office use , since then we have been scanning thousands of documents and as of today we have not had any problem . It scans legal size documents and it does it at the same time for both sides . it's so fast and it also includes a feature for larger than legal size documents that you fold the document and it scans it and then it put it together . . . . it is great ! ! ! I really think that for this price this is the best you can get and actually this scanner is way better than other pricier products . . . . I had shown it to some friends and they are going to order it too . . . Great product , congratulations Fujitsu and Amazon ! !
        • 100 4  I rarely bother to do this , but this little scanner is the best thing I've bought for my business in the last three or four years . It's allowing me to finally go nearly paperless . You get what you pay for , and this is true value for the money .
        • 104 4  This scanner is amazing ! I have several Fujitsu scanners ( predecessors to this model ) and this one tops them all . It is fast , efficient and easy to operate . I highly recommend it !
        • 141 4  I've been using the product a small amount over the last few weeks . The installation was a little lengthy due to several programs being installed , but the scanning is fast and accurate ! Very impressed with the speed .
        • 143 4  I bought this to bring my small business paperless . It has exceeded all of my expectations . I haven't installed the rack2filer because the regular software does everything I need . I cant believe how small it is . I bought it on Amazon and got an additional rebate from the Fujitsu website so be sure to check that .
        • 146 4  This is an excellent scanner . Easy to use , extremely fast and the two sided in one pass capability is terrific . I've purchased another brand at three times the price for a different application and it was marginally equivelent and did not have the one pass capability .
        • 157 4  Before buying a new scanner I researched pretty intensively the various makes and models available . I needed a very reliable and quick scanner that produces excellent pdfs and at a very reasonable price . I concluded the Fujitsu was my best bet . I have NOT been disappointed . I have scanned in 9 years worth of semi-monthly reports as well as use it daily for documents that need to be emailed . I am thoroughly impressed with this machne and its ease of use . Yes , I read the other reviews too , I have had a few minor jams ( but this doesn't happen very often ) - as would any machine but it's very simple to clear - Press a button and the top opens releasing the document . I've had other machines that a minor Jam was a chore to fix . Would not trade my scanner for any other in this same catagory and price range !
        • 182 4  The Fujitsu S510 is absolutely the fastest scanner I've ever seen . I love the fact that it converts on-the-fly to PDF and that it has a very small footprint . The only negative is that it occasionally takes in two sheets at a time . Overall I'm very pleased with the product .

      • 159 4  I have a love / hate relationship with technology and most of the items work barely like they are supposed to . This item however , seems to work as advertised . I have only had this for 10 hours and I have scanned 590 pages of items . You could say I went crazy with it , and I would agree . I figured it is the best way to break it in . This thing takes up very little space on the desk and is FAST ! I have a flat bed all in one , and it takes about 1 minute per side . This thing I could throw a stack of items in and try and remove a staple from the next stack , and it would be done by the time I got the staple removed . It works great for scanning all the items in a folder and just archiving them as a single PDF . The software could use some improvements . It would be great if it supported drag and drop of PDFs into other PDFs or pages of a PDF into pages of another . I guess that is where Acrobat 8.0 comes in . I have yet to try it out . As far as scanning business cards go , I think this item kind of stinks for it , unless they are really thin and cheap cards . The thicker / nicer cards had to almost be forced through . As far as misfeeds go , in the 590 items I scanned I probably had 10 - 12 , and some were due to me not knowing how the machine pulls stuff . I wonder if they could have made one w / out Acrobat and charged like $100 less . So far I am really happy . I now need to destroy about 450 of those 590 pages , so a paper shredder may be on my next thing to buy . I am looking forward to scanning all of my tax related items this year ! I am interested to see how it holds up over time .
        • 038 4  This is my 4th purchase ! I love this scanner that I purchased one for my personal use at home . I normally buy these for work , but after using it for a few months I realized that this is a great tool for home too . It is easy to use and set up , and there is no hastle in saving files etc . Just set the thing up ; then just load the paper and press one button . Actually I am buying a 5th one today . Oh , I forgot , Amazon has never let me down . When I buy on line , the first place I look is Amazon , because I always get my product on time and no hastles . Great job Amazon . Rick Casillas Lamsco West , Inc . COO

      • Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Update 11 - 2009 I have had the machine since 5 / 2008 and it works great . Update 11 - 2009 I have had the machine since 5 / 2008 and it works great . • 008 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I bought this item for my small office .
        • 018 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) This scanner performs better than expected .

As of 11 - 05 - 09 there is still no driver for Mac OS 10.6 . This is critical since major functionality is compromised . Fujitsu's advice : Reinstall OS 10.5 . Incredible . As of this same date there is still no driver for Win7 either . Is this company brain dead ? ? If you are using Mac OS 10.6 ( Snow Leopard ) do not buy this scanner . Same for Win 7 .

        • 047 4  I love this product . I have been trying to convert my office to paperless for years , but with my Epson flatbed scanner and autofeed attachment , it just took forever and was very painful . Scanning both sides of a document was very tricky , since you needed to turn the whole stack of paper around and pray that it would not skip a page , then everything else would be off . The ScanSnap is awesome . I had the scanner now about 4 weeks and have scanned over 2000 pages , with no problems . From business cards , to greeting cards , to average papers . If you use the guides to get the paper aligned it will work perfectly . My Epson would often pull in multiple pages for a scan , the ScanSnap has done this only twice so far , which is a fantastic rate . When I have a minute I gather up 50 to 100 pages and depending on the folder structure with a press of a button they are archived within minutes . For weird pieces you can use the scan envelope that comes with the scanner . I have not scanned any pictures with it since the resolution may not be as good , in addition I still have my Epson around . And besides that it is a document scanner . You sure can't beat the conversion to searchable documents for rapid finding of information . The install went ok , wasn't the fastest since there were a bunch of components to install . But you usually only install it once . I am working on Vista and have not encountered any problems nor interference with any other hardware / drivers . In all , worth every penny if you want to scan lots of documents .
        • 057 4  I've used them all - - Epson flatbed , Canon LiDE flatbed , Paperport , etc . I've been searching ( it seems like forever ) for the best way to convert my mountains of paper into something I can manage . This Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 delivers on all of its promises . The included software makes short work of your paper , turning it into searchable PDFs that will be usable now and forever . It's so pleasing to buy a product with high expectations , and to have it exceed those high hopes ! One word of caution - - make sure you have adequate BACKUPS for your electronic documents ! ! ! ! ! And get the best shredder you can afford . . . . .
        • 062 4  I've had one of these for a year now , and love it . It's very quick and reliable , and having a way to scan in large amounts of paper documents goes a long ways towards eliminating clutter . I've even started sawing the spines off of some old books and scanning those in , it works great . You can scan 500 pages in less than 1 / 2 an hour . I've scanned over 5,000 pages with it now and it still works reliably . By the way , it is possible to use this scanner on Mac OS X as well as Windows . Google ScanSnap S510 Mac OS X and follow the directions on how to install the Japanese ScanSnap software package and then copy the English resources into it . It was tedious to set up , but now I can use the ScanSnap on my MacBook Pro running either OS X or Windows XP .
        • 063 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) After one year of almost daily use in a busy office , this great little scanner has performed flawlessly . We've scanned thousands of multi-page documents . It'll skip blank pages , scan two-sided documents in one pass , tells you if it didn't find anything to scan , and quickly produces a pdf of your documents . It's small , light , fast , quiet , dependable , and a snap to use .
        • 066 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) The feeder jams at anything over two sheets of paper . If a piece of paper has a staple hole , the feeder jams . If a piece of paper was ever folded , the feeder jams . The manufacturer will not take the product back , so if you get one with a bad feeder you are stuck . I see all the great reviews , but my experience with the product has been very bad .
        • 069 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) This is the best scanner I have every used ( of course unless you need a flatbed scanner ) !
        • 075 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I've scanned thousands of pages through this thing . The 50 page capacity is not accurate though . For 20lbs paper , I've found 10 sheets to be about the max . For slick textbook paper , I found 20 - 30 pages works fine . Above that and you get paper jams . Still , it is fast and scans are clear . Recommended .
        • 085 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) This is the best scanner I have ever purchased , period . !
        • 087 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Besides the scanner being great , the package includes a standard copy of Adobe Acrobat - not just the Adobe Acrobat Reader - and the high-end OCR software made by ABBYY FineReader .
        • 096 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I am very pleased with this purchase . This is by far the best and easiest to use scanner I have ever used . I use it in my office . The copies are great and it scans both sides of multi-page documents with ease . This is not a picture scanner however so if that is what you need you may want to search further
        • 110 4  Been using this scanner for a few weeks now and basically , I'm pleased . Hardware works very well . I scanned-in a 300 - page manual with varying thickness paper in just a few minutes without any feed problems or other errors . Works quickly and accurately . However , the software that comes with the machine is a bit lacking . It does not have a TWAIN driver , so you're stuck with the software supplied by Fujitsu . The main program , Scansnap Organizer , does an adequate job of organizing , viewing and managing scanned documents . However , it has only very rudimentary editing and modification capabilities . So , one has to run a separate supplied program , Adobe Acrobat ( Version 8 ; not the current version 9 ) , to do much with the documents . In addition , the OCR software supplied only works with documents scanned-in using the ScanSnap scanner . So if you want to make other PDF files searchable , or convert them to text for editing , you need to have another OCR software program available .
        • 116 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Quickly and reliably scans multiple pages . Occasionally has some hick-ups , but as good as modern technology allows . As far as ease of use , I rated a 4 because sometimes the scan button stops working after I scan a lot of items , and I need to reboot my PC , but that may be a PC configuration issue . Generally very good product , I'd buy again .
        • 120 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) It is so quick and easy to scan documents and then decide where and what to do with them . Multiple documents scan in moments rather than opening a typical scanner and setting each page separately . As a realtor , with lots of documents to share , I love my Scansnap !
        • 122 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) An excellent product in a small package . I have been using it for a long time now and I have been able to digitize not only a lot of paper work but some of my books too . Very easy to use . A free copy of acrobat is a bonus . Expensive but worth the money .
        • 125 4  It does the job and does it well . The one thing I've found when scanning lots of pages , is if I slow down the scan speed by right clicking on the SnapScan tray icon ( it defaults to fastest ) then I have less challenges . Even though it scans like the wind , if there are lots of pages and it is going too fast the machine seems to outrun itself at times . Hard to believe this little sucker can move paper that fast , not to mention scanning two sides at once . Want the best , get this one .
        • 130 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) As a CPA I was looking for a product that would streamline the process of scanning and storing the volumes of client paperwork I receive . The Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 was the answer . It was easy to set up and it does everything it claims it will do . I am very happy with this product .

        • 133 4  I purchased my Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Scanner after reading about it in a REALTORS article . My home office needed a fax / copier . The all-n-one printer that I had was bulky and slow compared to the S510 , and the S510 has no re-accruing expense like ink cartridges . The S510 fit my needs and lived up to everything I found it could do . I thought it was a little expensive , but after using it the price didn't matter .
        • 136 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I have had this scanner for over a year now , and it still amazes me . Buy it , you will not be dissapointed . I used to hate scanning , now it is easy and the quality of the documents is great .

        • 147 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Installing the software and setting up the Snapscan was a breeze . You can pick and choose which of the software applications that you want to use .
        • 149 4  The Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 scanner is very quick to convert hard copy to e-mail files . The scanner is very small and requires little space . My multi function printer get's a lot less use , faxing and scanning . Great product .
        • 155 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) This is a great machine . Fast easy to set up and operate . Worth every penny I paid for it . All pro no con . It scans super fast and never miss's a page . If you need a scanner , this is it .
        • 158 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I have a love / hate relationship with technology and most of the items work barely like they are supposed to .
        • 161 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) As a mortgage broker , I handle a LOT of documents . Joe Parsons
        • 163 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) A lot of people have said that it can only scan to PDFs , but if you set the color option to Color , JPEG becomes an option for the file format .
        • 170 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Purchased this in March ' 09 from Amazon cause it costs twice as much here .
        • 172 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I'm purchasing our 12th ScanSnap scanner today , not because of any problems with prior units , but because it is the most sought after device in our law firm ! We purchased our first unit about a year ago and now everyone wants one on their desk because they are small , easy to operate and fast enough to avoid a trip to the high-output hogh-speed copier we have down the hall , and the files are easier to name and move after scanning . They have held up well in a business environment where they get heavy daily use , it would be more than adequate in a home or small office situation .

        • 180 4  This review is from : Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Works great , a bit pricy however . If you need to do a lot of scanning the price is worth it . Comes w / a good software package as well .

      • This is an excellent sheet feed scanner with a small footprint . It scans rapidly and stores documents as Adobe PDF files [ no proprietary formats are used ] . To make the pdf searchable you can open it in Acrobat Pro and use the Acrobat OCR engine or you can use the ScanSnap software [ which uses the ABBYY OCR software ] . Accuracy is about the same either way . I have Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Professional installed and I was previously using it with my EPSON Perfection 4990 flatbed scanner [ scanning directly from Acrobat Pro ] . If I needed to scan more than a few pages it was tedious because I had to remove the old page and then insert the new one . It got the job done but was a pain . So , to make sheet feed scanning easier , I purchased the S510 based for the most part on the reviews I read here . The S510 has a very small footprint [ 12 inches wide x 7 inches deep ] and has a USB cable [ provided-its about 6 feet long ] and power supply cable [ external power supply ] , both connect to the back of the unit . To use the S510 I installed the ScanSnap software [ comes on 1 CD ] and ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap 3.0 [ 2nd CD ] . You also are provided a CD with Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard . The ScanSnap software installs the driver , the software , and a taskbar icon that informs you when the unit is powered on [ closing the cover turns the unit off ] . Using the taskbar icon you can easily change the drive and path where documents are scanned to [ I set up D :。

ScanSnap ] . In this folder you use the ScanSnap organizer to set up subfolders [ called cabinets ] . When a document is scanned it shows up in the main folder as a PDF . You can rename it and drag it to a cabinet . Since all of this is within the D :。

ScanSnap folder , backup is very easy since you know where your documents are located . No proprietary scanned formats are used-the documents are saved as Adobe PDF files . You can also scan directly to any drive :。

folder you wish-bypassing the ScanSnap organizer . I'm not sure which way I like best yet but I'm leaning towards using the SnapSnap organizer and cabinets . To scan you load the documents , push the scan button on the unit , and your documents show up in the ScanSnap Organizer [ or directy in drive :。

folder ] as a single PDF file . If you want to make the PDF searchable you can do it in ScanSnap [ uses ABBYY ] or just open the pdf in Adobe Acrobat Pro and use the OCR engine within Acrobat . I tried both ways and they seemed about equally accurate . Bottom Line : Excellent Scanner to get those loose paper documents or loose photographs saved as PDF's .
        • 012 4  I purchased this product over a month ago and I love that it doesn't take up too much space . It is very small and scans pages pretty quickly . The major issue I'm having is that the pages tend to jam too often . It doesn't matter if the paper being inserted and scanned is old or new , previously stapled or whatever . There are times when the scanner works really well and I do not have issues with the feeder . But more often than not I have to feed even a 3 page document because it continually jams . I did not purchase this product anticipating I would have to constantly feed documents 2 pages at a time . The product description boasts that it can hold up to 50 pages . Unfortunately , you'll be feeding the majority of those pages .
        • 022 4  I am amazed at how fast this scanner can scan both sides of a document at the same time . The software was easy to install and worked the first time . The interface is easy and straight forward . I can send multipage documents as PDF files in minutes instead of the hour it used to take .
        • 077 4  I've been using a ScanSnap at the office for a few years now . I purchased this one for home . The scanner is quick and efficient . It blows away any other scanner I've been able to find that is supposed to be for home use , particularly receipts and bills . It is not a memory / CPU processing hog like a couple other scanners sold mainly for receipts . If you're looking for a machine to scan your personal home documents , this is the one for you . Also , the software package that comes with it is very easy to use . It may be a bit more than the rest on the market , but the speed and ease of use makes it well worth the investment .
        • 093 4  I got the ScanSnap after reading all of the rave reviews and have not been disappointed . The S510 is EXTREMELY easy to use , easy set-up , 1 - button scan and loaded with options . With included software , you can also edit scanned documents in Microsoft Word . The process of scanning is very fast and the machine automatically detects 1 or 2 sided . It's a little pricey - but if you can afford , you will not be disappointed .
        • 127 4  I use this scanner for work and am very pleased with it . I work with people's taxes and income documents and use this to keep my office as paperless as possible . It's fast , accurate , stable , compact , and has great quality . If you're in the market for a desktop scanner , you will not find a better deal for your money .
        • 151 4  Hardware and software work great - - does many pages at a time and is very quick . Suggest you copy heavier pages on plain paper if you're scanning a stack to prevent a jam , but otherwise it was everything I was looking for .
        • 167 4  This is my second ScanSnap . It is a great machine and the bonus is Acrobat Standard included in the package .
