ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner

  • 010 4  I purchased this product in a effort to eliminate large amounts of paper from my house . Apple made huge improvements to the Spotlight feature in Mac OS X Leopard , so I felt it was about time to go paperless . A friend recommended using this scanner as a way to get documents into an electronic format quickly . Using the S510M , I'm able to scan 100s of pages in one hour . Once scanned , I simply put them all in a single directory on my computer and use Spotlight ( the magnifying glass at the top right of the screen ) to find any document I need . I don't need to file them with meaningful filenames or put them into folders - Spotlight hasn't let me down yet , and it's very very fast at finding what I'm looking for . Everything you've read in other reviews of this scanner is true . It really can scan both sides of 18 pages in 1 minute . To use Spotlight to find documents I need to use the excellent OCR software that is included , called FineReader . Depending on the amount of detail on the page , I usually find that FineReader is the thing that limits the speed I can scan documents , but only slightly . Basically , this scanner can read documents as fast as you can feed them to it . The included software is excellent value . Adobe Acrobat Professional is not as polished an application as it could be , but it good at what it does . I've found myself using this software more as a standalone application , rather than for documents I've scanned . As an example , I've created PDFs with forms that can be filled in using Acrobat Reader or Preview . Mac OS is excellent at handling PDFs , and can do much of what Acrobat can do , but there are one or two things it is nice to have Acrobat for . Installing Acrobat onto Leopard took a little bit of an effort , as I needed to find the correct patches to download and apply to it . After installation Acrobat's auto update feature would not work , but after I applied some patches it began to work correctly . As I mentioned before , the OCR software included is called FineReader . This is not a full version of the product , as it is limited to process only PDF files created using the scanner . For me , this isn't a big limitation . The accuracy of this software is incredible , and is the main reason I can rely on Spotlight to retrieve documents I've scanned . The last time I used OCR was around 8 years ago , and the technology has improved beyond recognition since then . You should note that this scanner is designed for making PDFs of documents such as bank statements , utility bills , contracts , etc . It is not really suitable for scanning things like photographs , although it can do it . This scanner is expensive , but I would recommend it given the amount of time it will save you . It is very well made , comes with the best software , is small , works with a single button press , and never fails . Products this good are very rare , I just wish I'd bought one years ago !
    • 001 4  I just received this scanner . I've been collecting a stack of documents to scan and finally ran out of excuses with its arrival . I settled in for a long evening of unpleasantness . I put the first batch of 6 pages into the hopper , pressed the Scan button expecting a sloooowww , painful grind . But . . . . ? Each sheet whipped through effortlessly ! Both sides of the double sided sheets scanned on a single pass ! Everything was oriented correctly and automatically and the legibility was excellent . How did they DO this ? I'm used to scanning taking so long I continually forget what I'm doing before I'm done . This is a whole new experience . Suddenly , I'm seeing the real possiblity of reducing all my file cabinets to a few CDs in my lifetime . Wow . This is about my 5th scanner ( HP , Epson previously ) but the very first one to take the agony out of scanning . And it's such a cute little machine . I never would have believed it could accomplish such a masterful job . It also handles legal sized documents - you fold the document in half , it scans both sides at once and marries them back together ! Thank heavens they brought this out for the Mac .
    • 002 4  I am using this scanner mainly for food magazines . I have plans to make everything digitalized and then setup a computer in the kitchen . Anyway , I have a stack of magazines in hand . When I finished setting up the scanner , put a page in , press the Scan button on the machine . . . I kid you not , it took less than 5 seconds for the piece of paper to go through the scanner . At first I was like is it doing some kind of warm up ? But then I saw on my computer screen that it's actually processing the scan . . . WOW . The quality was superb . It's just amazing . OK , let's run it through the OCR . I wasn't sure what to expect . You know magazine pages have all sorts of images and texts and they're all overlapping each other . Anyway , it came out perfect , I mean , perfect . I don't know how these guys managed to do that . Although I have to say the color of the page after being OCRed is a bit degraded , but not very noticeable . So I started tearing up the whole magazine , removing all the ad pages , and it became about 60 sheets / 120 pages . Stack them all up , hit the scan button . Man , that was SO effortless . I carefully torn out the pages so that the rugged sides were not too bad . I did have to sit next to the scanner to catch the pages coming out from it , because from time to time the rugged edges would cling onto each other and pushes the whole pile to the floor . Whatever , I can spare 2 mins doing that . I set it to OCR directly after scanning , so I can just walk away afterwards . I also used the Acrobat Pro to remove any more ad pages that were included in duplex scanning . The whole experience was surreal . This little cute machine gives home scanners a completely new definition . It makes all other less expensive scanners expensive , in terms of the time you save , and plus the software you get . Remember , you're receiving a copy of Acrobat Pro , not just Standard .
    • 004 4  I was on the fence about this scanner because it's a little pricey and I already have an all-in-one Epson flatbed scanner , however within the first few hours of using it I feel absolutely great about this purchase . For me , it's a what is your time worth problem . I keep paper copies of all of my statements , bills , etc . to the point that it's filled my 2 - drawer filing cabinet and about half a dozen of the plastic tote filing bins you get at Office Depot . Seeing that this may be a tad ridiculous I realized that moving to electronic copies for most everything was the way to go . I'm a Mac power-user so I was expecting to be really critical of the software - too often apps are ported to the Mac with little care but Fujitsu did this right in that they developed for the Mac user . The Scanner hardware works really , really well and is successful in 99 out of a 100 docs on average - I have only had about 1 jam on an old mess of a document and it handled it perfectly the second time . As others have mentioned jams clear in an instant thanks to the well thought out design of the unit . Getting back to the software I am running Leopard on an Intel iMac and everything has been rock solid . It comes with the latest Acrobat if you want to get fancy but I've been happy just scanning to pdf's as fast as I can feed them through . The software is pretty flexible as to what the post-scan action to take is - you can instruct it to open in Acrobat or other apps ( for example , I use Preview to do a quick QA check ) . I am really impressed with the stability of the driver and scan management software in combination with the hardware . Fujitsu's design philosophy is holistic and in the Mac spirit - you can literally be up and scanning within a few seconds of flipping the unit open showcasing the attention to detail in hardware / software integration . I have been delighted with being able to put a stack of 20 utility bills and watch them scan to a single pdf within seconds without a hitch - amazing ! Getting back to what is my time worth I have saved so much time by adopting a new means to organize and store my documents that within a weekend this machine paid for itself . As a new Dad , turning hours into minutes is priceless . Get this machine - it will bring about a very positive change in your workflow and save you space and time .
    • 006 4  This thing is amazing . My paper organization is completely divided into before scanner and after scanner . I'm able to find any important document or financial statement I've received since getting the scanner ; or rather - I can find the scanned version . The paper copy just goes in a big box to be stored for 7 - 8 years ( for tax purposes ) . The ScanManager software is great . It has a bunch of features , but ignore most of them . The best part is just to set it to Scan to file which means that it gets completely out of your way and just leaves PDF files in a folder on the disk ( Scan to folder inexplicably makes you do a lot more work ) . The included software can convert your documents to text - or more accurately add the text to the otherwise image-only PDF files . I don't use it though , it's pretty slow and makes the files A LOT bigger . For me just organizing the files by year and type ( banking , taxes , expense , contracts ) does the job . The scanner also comes with Adobe Acrobat Professional , but I strongly recommend that you just use OS X 10.5 ( Leopard ) . The QuickLook feature and the improvements in the Preview PDF viewer are perfect for the job of quickly organizing , doing light editing ( remove unneeded pages for example ) or looking through many pdf files . Another recommendation : Look into JungleDisk to backup your important documents . It will store them securely on Amazons servers with their S3 service and it's incredibly cheap . I have a thousand PDF files stored now and I pay less than a dime a month for that . The footprint of the scanner is great when it's folded up ; it will easily fit on your desk . The user interface is also just about perfect : Open it up to turn it on . Press the button to scan . The only thing I could wish for would be having the document feeder work better ; my pages often get stuck to each other so I generally feed it one page at a time . If your papers are in better shape than mine it might work better for you .
    • 008 4  Well , Adobe Acrobat Professional on its own , runs about 384 , and this scanner , with a free copy of Acrobat Professional , runs about 500 . But outside of that , the scanner is an unreliable sheet feeder . It has a great cold-cathode imaging light , meaning it gets solid color , great images , but it's sensitive to being banged around . When it scans , it does so effortlessly - - recognizing double sided pages , and scanning both sides in an instant . The OCR software is convenient , but not pushy . You can OCR a bunch of scanned documents at a later time ( as it occupies the computer ) . But , the biggest problem , is double-feeding or triple-feeding pages . It has a fragile tensioner mechanism which keeps it from double feeding . As it uses a vertical / gravity feed , this piece is more important ( compared with some horizontal feeders like the HP's and to a lesser extent , the Brother scanners ) . The tensioner is so sensitive , that on a paper jam ( the first day I used it ) it became misaligned - - it couldn't feed properly . I adjusted , and even removed and replaced the tensioner piece , but it kept popping out . After that first paper jam , it worked ok for about a day , and then all it would do is double-feed . I gave up . So to recap , great software ( worth it on that basis alone probably ) , high quality imager , but the feeder stinks and prevents the scanner from serving its purpose .
    • 009 4  I have installed one at work . The footprint is pretty decent , despite my crowded desk . As others have noted , the product tends to pull in multiple pages of paper at times . This is primarily when many sheets have been together ( e.g . , stapled , or pulled from a journal / magazine ) and have not been riffled to get a little air between the sheets . Generally , with multipage stapled documents I clip off the staple and riffle the sheets ; this eliminates the problem . I have not had problems with it feeding glossy pages from medical journals . The software is generally easy to use . I typically scan to file and I wish the window for selecting the desired folder wasn't in the format of the Windows explore function ; I'd rather it were like opening folders in a regular window . In addition , it'd be nice to be able to delete unwanted pages from within the scan menu before saving them all to a file ( you can see all scanned pages there , but can't delete any ) . It takes going into the file later with Adobe 8 ( still getting used to that app ) to delete them . Have used the business card scanning app only a couple of times . Seems useful , but my opinion is awfully premature . Overall , however , I give this device high marks ( 4 / 5 ) . I'm an administrator and physician , and often scan in notes , interesting papers , photocopied pages of books , and odd-sized things . I'm a bit of a geek , too , and enjoy well-designed software and hardware . This isn't perfect , but pretty darn good .
    • 012 4  This scanner is so fast and accurate it's unbelievable . It took me all of 5 minutes to load the software and plug it in . Then all I had to do was put in the object I wanted to scan , and whoosh , it was done . I scanned a 21 page contract front and back in seconds . The scanner knows if the back is blank or not and scans the back side only if there's something on it . I then converted the document to a pdf that I could search . It took one click to start the process . The document was extremely accurate . This is really going to make my life easier . If you want to scan anything and everything , this is the scanner to get .
    • 014 4  This machine is a pretty good solution for Mac users whose desks ( and sometimes floor ) have gotten lost under towering stacks of paper . Scanning really is more snappy with the automatic paper / document feeder , one-button scanning and Fujitsu's ScanSnap software that allows you to adjust controls for : - quality ( normal = fast , better = faster , best = slow , excellent = slower ) p.s . best is not actually the best . - color mode ( auto-detect , color , black and white ) - which sides you scan ( duplex , single-sided - - if you choose duplex , it automatically deletes blank pages ) Although scanning with this machine is normally a smooth process , paper jams do happen . The likelihood of a paper jam obviously depends on the documents ' paper quality . Clean and uncreased documents go through most smoothly . With these documents , you can practically walk away worry-free and come back when the scanning is done . For documents that have been stacked tightly together for some time , I do have to watch out for two sheets feeding through at the same time . For documents that tend to stick to each other , I have to smooth out dog ears and creases as best I can , cut off corners that have been stapled ( not just use a staple remover ) , feed singly and / or watch over the scanner to clear any jams that reoccur . Clearing paper jams is extremely simple : use the grey latch ( above the scan and power buttons ) to swing open the front part of the machine , and pull out any paper . Other perks : The inclusion of Adobe Acrobat Professional helps justify the pricetag . The small size ( and lack of bulk ) makes it easy to carry or store . Downside : Besides the price , PC users cannot use this model of ScanSnap . I'm not sure why Fujitsu has to have two separate models for Mac vs . PC users .
    • 019 4  If you are thinking to go paperless ( or reduce the clutter ) in your office or home and keep digital archives this is the product you need . I have it for 2 weeks now , I use it with an Apple computer and it works flawlessly . The installation is easy , the software is intuitive , comes with Adobe Acrobat and the machine is as simple as you can imagine . The quality of the scans is great . The paper feeding system works well . Sometimes the papers may get trapped in the rolling system but it is easy to resolve opening the front panel . The footprint of this scanner is very small ( it will surprise you ) so it sits well on the side of my computer without using much desk space . Something to remember . . . once you do digital , be sure to implement a backup system that is automatic so you never loose these important documents . Second , implement an organization system for the files [ . . ] and think about the need to encrypt some of the files that contain personal information . . . so if your computer is stolen , you don't loose all the personal and critical information with it .
    • 022 4  This product is a dream . I read all the reviews on this site before I made my purchase . I was interested to see if the features and benefits would stack up to my expectations . Wow ! This is the best electronic device I have purchased in years . A flatbed scanner is painfully slow campared to this . If you have a ton of papers that need to be scanned you will be amazed at how neat this device is . It arrived in a nice big box . I took it out and installed all the software on my Apple Laptop running Leopard . Installing the software took less than 10 minutes . I connected the device to my laptop through a USB hub and started scanning . It was flawless . As fast as stated , all the features worked , I really enjoy it . I am now cleaning out all my old files and am excited to get rid of all the paper in my office . I am also considering adding an online backup from Amazon to cover myself . I love this thing .
    • 026 4  There's only one feature that could make this a better scanner : a shredder attachment at the bottom . : ) Seriously , this machine is fast , makes great document scans ( and not too shabby on images too ) , and its been very reliable . We spent 3 solid weekends scanning and shredding 15 years of personal and professional documentation - - emptying 6 full file cabinet drawers ! That would have taken months ( years ? ) with our flatbed scanner . The scanner very rarely jammed , and when it did , it was paper that was wrinkled up , too many holes from staples , or I didn't orient correctly to begin with . Occasionally , thin paper ( such as carbon-less copy paper ) would sometimes jam or feed multiple sheets . For those who complain that it loses connection to the computer and they have to force-quit the application , there's a much much simpler fix : close the scanner lid and reopen it ! If the scanner and software lost connection , flipping the lid fixed the issue . . . every single time . Sometimes pages that are oddly sized , such as 8.5 x 8 forms , would result in incorrectly scanned files . Parts of the page would be cut-off and needed to be rescanned . To fix this , I changed the paper size setting to always be 8.5x11 unless scanning legal papers . Great scanner , worth every penny . You can also get them refurbished from the Fujitsu Outlet for about 60% .
    • 028 4  This is a great machine . It works right out of the box . It is amazingly fast and simple to use . Quiet too . My old multifunction just can't compete . It is now in the basement . Installation is simple . Is much smaller than you would imagine and has a very small footprint . I use this in a home office to scan important documents , receipts , etc . One can actually imagine going paperless . Has a very solid feel . Simple and straight-forward design . One thing to keep in mind , to be able to use the auto-scan button on the scanner you need to have the scan manager software configured as a startup option , the auto scan button only works when the software is up and running . This is easy to do and only puts an icon on your dock . I wish all products were this well designed and useful . This is the Ferrari of scanners . Before I bought it I wondered about the comparatively high price , but after using it , I've concluded it is actually a bargain compared to the alternatives . Well worth the money due to its speed , design , and quality of output ( I haven't tried it with photos , only text , magazines , and similar ) . Pros : simple installation speed small size solidly built good easy to use design high quality scans of documents Cons : One small software glich - - custom file naming is rudimentary and standard built in file naming options are limited . This could be improved .
    • 032 4  I'm a quite picky and demanding customer , but I have to say this scanner works like a dream ! It's easy to set up and use out of the box . It got a small and compact size and scanning can be done instantly by just putting paper in the document feeder and push the scan button . That's it and it's starts scanning using predefined settings . On duplex scanning blank pages ( typically the backsides ) are automatically removed , it detects if the scanned pages are color or B & W and you get the option by the end of the scan to run OCR on the scanned pages . OCR works flawlessly . Scanning is surprisingly fast , it seems like scanning in duplex on standard resolution only takes like 2 seconds per page which I find quite amazing ! Flatbed scanning is medieval compared to it in speed ! There are few negative things to say about this scanner . I only had minor problems like it doesn't always rotate pages correctly or detect if a page is in color or B & W if there's little color on the pages . But this doesn't happen very often . On OCR scanning PDFs doesn't look 100% as they did before OCR if they contain images and text together . But it can be changed to give a highly acceptable result by changing the settings . All in all this scanner is worth every penny for a person who needs to scan lots of documents and it's gives the right ease of use and good results a Mac user expects !
    • 034 4  Scanning should not be an art form . With too many scanners , users are given lots of choices-simplex or duplex , tiff or jpg , pdf or Word . This scanner skips many stupid steps . You insert paper and press a button . It detects double sided pages . It saves to a standard directory . It saves in a format you want for the type of material you are copying . Feeling bold , go ahead change the settings . It is a snap . Resetting is not difficult either . Speed ? It promises12 ppm color duplex . If anything it is even faster . It removes blank pages and rotates everything to the correct orientation . Great value .
    • 037 4  I bought this item back in May 08 and have been continuously pleased these last few months . I've been able to completely digitize all my paperwork within two days ( I had alot of paperwork ) . After scanning , the document is automatically saved as a PDF file . I've been able to scan all my magazines and put them in the recycling bin where they belong .
    • 040 4  I like the compact size of the scanner , its auto features and fast scanning speed . I bought the scanner to scan multiple sheets in view of its excellent reviews and features . However , it is taking in several sheets at a time and I am not able to fix this problem . The result is that I have to feed the next sheet in the scanner as soon as it is done scanning a sheet , which is annoying .
    • 046 4  Pros : 1 . Easy to install 2 . Compatible with Leopard with download from Fujitsu 3 . Bundled with Adobe Acrobat Professional 4 . Fast duplex scanning to PDF for documents 5 . Easier to use than most other scanners I have tried 6 . Great way to reduce paper Cons : 1 . No easy and quick way to merge PDF files ( one can do with Adobe Acrobat but I would prefer dragging one PDF over another to merge them )
    • 053 4  Recently I was looking at a jumbled pile of paid bills and other paper detritus around the house and trembled in fear at the thought of digging through everything and organizing it all into file folders . The stacks of paper . The folder tabs . The stickers . The filing boxes . The whole reason my pile ' o ' crap was sitting there was precisely because I didn't want to deal with it - - though I knew I needed to keep the files just in case . I'd heard of people digitizing everything and they sounded happy . And I'm a gadget kind of guy . So I figured , let's do this thing and I bought this scanner . I own a really nice Canon flatbed scanner , but using that for scanning bills or other documents is way , way too cumbersome . I've also owned one of the little packable receipt scanners , but they only scan one side at a time and were slow and made poor quality scans . But I'd heard good things about the Fujitsu ScanSnap line . Very good things . What a great little product ! It does exactly what it's supposed to do - - scan both sides of documents really fast and store them on your computer however you like . The included OCR software will even embed the ( recognizable ) text into the PDF document itself . Combine that with Mac OS X's Spotlight system-wide search and you can find the tiniest bit of text in any of the documents you scan - - now and anytime in the future . Amazing . This is NOT a photo scanner . Yes , you CAN scan photos with it , but that's not the purpose - - the scan quality is not great for that . But for document capture and storage , nothing in my experience beats it ( for an average consumer ) . The only thing I don't like is the high price . But in the end , I'm going to wipe out my paper files and - - so long as I do off-site backups - - I'll still have all the documents around for as long as I want or need . Okay , one more minor gripe : I'd prefer to have one master scanning application that does all the scanning , OCR and storage work in a single interface , rather than the collection of 4 bundled applications . But they do work together pretty well , so it's okay . Just feels a little bloated on the software side . The upshot is that I'm now enjoying scanning my documents . I'm especially geeked to do the document shredding afterwards ! I've never had a computer peripheral that made me smile like this , with the possible exception of the iPhone . Great stuff . If you're into scanning your docs , this is the scanner to get , even with the high price .
    • 054 4  I love the Fujitsu ScanSnap S520M . I previously bought the PC version of the Fujitsu ScanSnap , but since I switched over to the Mac , I decided to get the Mac Version of this scanner as well . The bundle comes with Adobe Acrobat , which is worth the purchase price of the scanner alone . With this scanner , you can scan straight to PDF in seconds . This type of scanner is more efficient than the flatbed scanners that you find in those all-in-one multifunction printers . The only downside to the ScanSnap is that it is not able to scan thick objects ( i.e . textbooks , passports , etc . ) , unless you rip out the pages and feed them through the scanner . For those types of documents , users should use a flatbed scanner . If you ever thought about going paperless the ScanSnap S510M is a great way to go . Just make sure you have your backup drives ( external hard drive , additional internal hard drives , etc . ) and software ( i.e . Apple's Time Machine ) so that you don't shoot yourself in the foot when your primary data gets corrupted / deleted .
    • 063 4  I am amazed by this product . All the reviews said it was good , but I was surprised how good it actually is . It's very compact , which I also wasn't expecting . It is fast , accurate , the output is very high quality , the software bundle is very good , although I use DevonThink Pro Office with it as a one-stop shop repository . I only wish it came in Black instead of white for the Macs . I don't know if the non-M version would work the same with my mac or not . I have been scanning and shredding happily . No issues .
    • 064 4  Clutter , paper , filing cabinets are the things I hate most about my office and now , those things are going away thanks to this little device ! For a long time I have been looking for a solution that works well within the OS X / Mac environment and this device has been a God send . It is fast , efficient and makes accurate scans . Even little charge receipts are handled ! Can't say enough about it .
    • 070 4  I bought this so I could send faxes from home . I know , you can get fax machines for much less , but I didn't want to mess with shared lines or installing a separate line . The image quality on scanned sheets is great , it automatically saves the file as a pdf and it integrated perfectly with my MacBook Pro . The files work fine with my online fax service and the pdf format makes file handling simple for emails , file sharing , etc . It's a little challenging to get the paper to feed straight for the scan ( especially a multi-page scan ) , but that's the only ( minor ) issue I've had with this unit .
    • 073 4  I bought this scanner last month after reading many positive reviews on it by others . I use it to scan all of my clinical records into electronic format for long term storage . That is a very big job . so far , this scanner has certainly lived up to its positive reputation . it is very fast scanning and sending scanned files to the appropriate place is a breeze . It works very well now and I hope that it will continue to work so superbly in the years to come . It was rather pricey ( > $400 ) but once again , it appears that you get what you pay for . I would buy one again in a heart beat .
    • 076 4  The product works as advertised - First class ! Works great with MacBook . Follow instructions on entering software . Only issue - when scanning individual photos , photos feed best when inserted with back of photo facing out . May be due to the glossy finish . Have fun !
    • 086 4  Overall an excellent product , providing an efficient way to archive documents quickly . It would be useful to be able to selectively delete pages or segments before saving ( as for example ads in a magazine article ) It would also be useful to have a setting where the OCR software automatically replaced the original scanned document after processing . Overall , I highly recommend this product
    • 088 4  This product has solved my desktop paper organization issues . I've been using it for about four months , and it has been superb . I recommend it highly . 1 . Reliable : does not jam often , and when it does , jams are very easy to fix . 2 . Good quality scans . 3 . Simple and easy to learn software makes organizing scanned files a breeze . 4 . Hardware is as simple and straightforward as it gets . 5 . Easy to install . 6 . Small desktop footprint . 7 . Very fairly priced given the quality of the product and the fact that you get a full version of Adobe Acrobat with the product . 8 . Scans quickly . 9 . Not a portable product but lightweight and easy to move around . At first I had problems with the document feed for multiple page scans . However , I quickly learned that if you begin the scan of a multiple page document with the scan button ( as opposed to the automatic system in the feeder ) the issue with multiple page scans goes away . ( This based on scans of up to 20 pages . I have not had need to try more . )
    • 089 4  I have owned this scanner since November 2007 . It just works . I mainly use this scanner to scan receipts for expense reports . It handles receipts of all sizes easily . I do not find the inclusion of adobe acrobat helpful . You can scan to email , print , preview , or file . With OS X Leopard and quick view scanning to file is easy . You can also scan to Chronos SOHO , iphoto , or pdfPen . I really don't need or use acrobat . My favorite application to scan directly into is ReceiptWallet . This allows you to scan a receipt into pdf format and automatically link this receipt to a spreadsheet and calculate totals , categorize , date and describe transactions . This makes submitting receipts to work very easy . Overall one of my most helpful purchases
    • 090 4  I've used a few auto-feed scanners over the years from Visioneer and HP in an attempt to create a paperless home office . All of them have had one thing in common . They were frustrating to use . They jammed frequently , had poor drivers , etc . This one does not fit that profile . I was initially a bit leary of the price . $400 + for a home scanner was a bit of a pill to swallow . Having used this scanner for a few months now , I'd have to say I'd be willing to pay more ! It is an absolute joy to use . It plows through my bills , receipts , statements , whatever , with not a single hiccup . It hardly even blinks when I give it crinkled and folded paper ( although it has it's limits ) . I got a pleasant surprise recently when I decided to scan a bunch of store receipts . You know the 3 - inch wide by 12 inch long kind ? No problem . Even if the auto-feeder sucked it through a little crooked , the software straightened it right back out . Wow . . . . and the speed . Holy cow . It flies . Having a full Acrobat Pro license included is a heck of a nice bonus .
    • 092 4  I've been a long time user of HP duplex scanners with automatic document feeds . Painfully slow , frequent jams and software that often flakes out . I began to dread having to scan any document . This scanner is cheaper and stunningly fast . Jams are rare . Software that comes with it is very nice ( Acrobat 8.0 ) and Cardiris which all work on the Mac . I have now cleared my stack of to be filed paper and business cards and they are happily filed in my recycling basket . Paperless nirvana approaches .
    • 097 4  So far so good easily scans multiple pages ( can only handle 10 at a time , but you can stand by and continue to feed more in as the tray empties so they can be in one document ) it definitely beats a coping the images on a flatbed scanner when you have several pages .
    • 099 4  I received the S510M on 2 - 22 - 08 . It is very small and quite unimpressive looking at first glance . But after installing the bundled software and making my first scans I was absolutely amazed . I scanned an entire cabinet drawer of saved material in a very short while . It is all now stored on my computer for quick retrieval . I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and am now looking around for more items to scan . This is one of the most useful and sensible purchase decisions I have made . Totally satisfied !
    • 101 4  Got mine yesterday , installed it with not a single problem , and scanned an entire file folder of bank statements ( one PDF for each month with an average of 5 pages per statement ) . Every PDF was clear , and easy to read . I used the Best setting , and was surprised at the fast scan time . The file folder of statements is now confetti , and the PDF's are archived . I have several thousand more things to convert to PDF's and confetti .
    • 112 4  This thing is simply amazing . It is the fastest scanner . I cant begin to say how great this is . I have scanned now over 7 thousand pages of files and pictures . The only time you will get a feed failure is if your paper is really old . I had a few when I ran some 15 year old stuff that had been in storage . In that case you just feed a few one at a time and since it only takes one second per page it would still be the fastest scanner you ever used even if it came with no doc feeder . I was sceptical about pictures but when i compared them to my cannon 600 scanner the Fujitsu won hands down . Cannon has been retired . Had some friends over and saw it . They got upset because in their business they have the big honkin HP $2000 scanners and could not believe the quality for being so small and cheap . They too were sold and said they would be purchasing these in the futre . This has helped me get rid of 3 huge bins of files and I can now find them easily on my hard drive . Comes with full Adobe Pro and is awesome . See the pictures I have added for size . Feb 4 , 2009 . Still going strong and still love this thing .
    • 115 4  This was my best purchase of 2008 . After 2 years it is still running well . The included software works well , no complaints . I am looking at the S1500m now as my girlfriend has taken my s510m .
    • 121 4  This scanner is unbelievably fast , scans both sides at the same time and is accordingly priced more expensive to many other solutions . So far the most disappointing item is the Document Feeder which more often than not is causing multiple pages to be pulled in ( no matter how much time and care you take to prepare the stack ) . This is unrelated to the number of pages ( 5 , 8 , 12 or more ) and the only resolution so far has been to always only scan one page at a time . Comes with many software packages with little or no integration and some of the packages are slowly getting old ( not a Fujitsu fault , but Abby seems to have stopped improving the Mac version ) .
    • 122 4  Been using the S510M for a couple of weeks now and the best thing about this scanner ( IMHO ) is its speed vs scan quality . This little machine will scan sheets quickly and still produce very good images for archiving and even re-printing . Higher resolution scans will slow it down a bit but that's to be expected . The software that Fujitsu has developed for the scanner ( the ScanSnap Manager ) is relatively intuitive and highly customizable . The third party software is decent but I need to find pdf generation / editing software that doesn't require so much in the way of system resources ( speaking of Adobe Professional of course ) . Cardiris works okay and ABBYY is decent as well . Caution to those expecting a full blown version of ABBYY , the version that's packaged with the S510M appears to only work on documents that are scanned through the S510M then dumped into ABBYY . I tried opening ABBYY and OCR'ing a pdf file and it wouldn't work . Overall I'm very happy with the purchase . A bit pricey but you get a pretty good little workhorse scanner that doesn't take up a whole lot of space .
    • 124 4  Ditto on all the positive comments . This thing is great . It's fast . It's quiet . The software is well designed . I have not yet experienced the paper feeding issues some people note . It has done very well with crinkled paper and paper full of staple holes ( staples removed of course ) .
    • 125 4  This scanner has made my life better . I scan thousands of pages that , at one time , I would have stored in filing cabinets . They're now better organized and take less space . Tax time is easier , my desk is cleaner , legal documents can be found remotely when I'm at my office . The scanner has paid for itself many times over .
    • 142 4  I haven't had a sheet fed scanner in years , but decided I needed one to tame the mountain of paperwork generated by my business , hobbies , and civic involvement as secretary for the local food bank , and as a city councilor . Hooking up to my Mac was easy and quick . Within minutes I was scanning in whole packets ( 70 - 80 pages ) of city meetings info and pictures . The small footprint on my desk is an added bonus . I have had it now for several weeks , with frequent use . All in all , it is a great little workhorse so far .
    • 149 4  This is an ultra-fast , double side , business oriented scanner . Once fine tuned , software is really fast , customized to your needs and generates searchable PDF that allow easy recovery of documents . A must have , return on investment is very , very quick .
    • 157 4  I have the smaller S300M at home and recommend both . The S510M is fast , scan quality is great , and best of all it just plain works like it's supposed to . We've gone completely paperless for records retention at my office thanks to this scanner .
    • 161 4  Tremendous scanner . Software setup went quickly ( 10 minutes ) . Fed several scans in - they literally take 2 seconds . Both sides scanned at once . OCR took maybe 30 seconds . Set up different profiles ( single sided , both sides at once , OCR ) and feed away . Highly recommend . This little machine is going to eat all my papers , and ( for me ) I'm going to OCR them all and have everything saved and text searchable on my Mac . They seriously should set these things up at Apple stores - their sales ( I mean Apple's , as well as Fujitsu's ) would fly off the shelves .
    • 167 4  I thought they fixed the problems with the paper jam in the previous model to this one so I went ahead and bought another one HOPING the paper jam issue was solved . I am ready to throw this and the old one against the wall to satisfy the frustration I have every time I try to scan more than 2 pages . I just grabs two or more pages and feeds them through altogether . I separate the paper and again the same thing . After maybe 5 tries it ends up working . I know the paper can stick together but they know that too so don't blame the paper ( even though I do loosen it up ) . There is basically no technical support either . Try calling Fujitsu and see how far you get . Next time I am buying a scanner I know works . The reviews here just don't make any sense if the paper always jams . If you want a great 1 page scanner I recommend this one , but this is suppose to be a multiple page scanner and it just doesn't work no matter how you fiddle with it . GG

  • 044 4  My backlog of documents finally got too large to take , so I bought this scanner after reading the great reviews . It arrived yesterday and I am thrilled with it . I can scan over a document a minute , including the time to select a destination folder , verify that the file was created , and then drop the paper into the shredder . I had one jam on a multi-page document , and I discovered that if you simply apply a light pressure to the stack of pages you won't have any feed problems . Also , the picture is deceptive - the unit is surprisingly compact , just barely wider than a standard sheet . I would recommend this model .

    • 061 4  Easy to set-up , easy to use ! I've gone from a four drawer filing cabinet to just 1 drawer in a matter of a couple of weeks . All of my bills / payments on now stored on Mac's idisk and can even access them from my iphone ! I sell high end copiers / printers that also do scanning and I can honestly tell you this works as good as they do !

      • 096 4  This is a great document scanner ! It works well with my Mac . The included software is all you'll need to scan documents on a Mac . Buy the PC version if you want PC software . I've scanned magazine articles , business cards , brochures . It will scan just about anything that isn't wider than letter size paper . It's feeds documents through pretty quickly and scans instantly when you press the button . I don't use it for scanning photos and things like that . A flatbed scanner is a better choice for those . $430 seems expensive , but this is a great quality product that will let me file almost everything I do electronically , so my files can travel with me on my laptop . Buy a shredder to file all your print documents after scanning them into your computer . Just make sure you have a good backup plan .
        • 085 4  Fast , great software , all the scan to ( file email print etc ) options I could want . I am so blown away by this , it just works . 10 years of waiting for a decent document imaging solution for my dream of the paperless office was finally realized . You simply have to buy this if you are a Mac user looking to e-file your papers and go paperless . Expensive but worth every penny . The first page I scanned went so fast I thought the thing was broken . . .
        • 098 4  Excellent product , highly recommended . Yes , maybe a little pricey , but you get what you pay for . Small footprint , fast , accurate , double-sided scanning , great bundled software . . . an excellent buy . No regrets .
        • 132 4  Fast ! Works great on receipts and full size sheets . You'll want to scan everything you own . Fairly long process installing 3 + software packages , but worthwhile plug and play performance afterwords . Card Reader software is average ( at best ) on reading business cards , but hey . . . it's probably as good as anything else out there . Otherwise the 510 will make pdf's of anything you've got fast .

      • 110 4  This is a really nicely made product . The white color complements my Mac and I had no trouble setting it up out of the box and getting it running in about 10 minutes . It is quiet , very fast and had only about one or two misfeeds in three or four hundred pages of documents . Scan quality on the slowest setting is superb and excellent on all others . It is happiest with about 25 pages in the feeder but will go up to 50 . The software interface could be better or faster in use but gets the job done and offers you enough options to be flexible and useful in naming scans and so on . The inclusion of the Acrobat Pro software is a nice bonus . Also the covers can fold top and bottom to enclose the unit when not in use which helps to keep dust out . I turned a four drawer chest of papers into a 4GB thumb drive with this baby ! I would have given it 4.5 stars if possible - the only ding is the software ( at least for Mac ) . Highly recommended !
        • 007 4  Just received the scanner this week and so far like it a lot . I spent an evening scanning hundreds of pages with no problems . Its very fast yet produces great quality scans . As others have said , this is a great tool to go paperless . Its surprisingly compact and the software is very integrated with Apple's OS . Also super easy to get started without reading any documentation ( just remember to install the SW before you connect the scanner to your Mac ) . However , the included Adobe Acrobat Pro Software is very valuable and probably worth reading the manual for in order to get even more value from the scanner . I always read Amazon reviews and never post but thought Fujitsu deserved a few minutes of my time given the great quality of this product .
        • 015 4  This is the fastest scanner I have ever used . Being able to drop a stack of papers in , and not worry about it they are double-sided or not ( it automatically detects and scans both sides ! ) is just great . The software is fine , too . Before , I used to dread scanning because it would take forever , but this scanner is faster than my fast printer . And it is tiny and looks nice . And it works perfectly with Macs , including with the latest Leopard 10.5 OS , which is more than I can say about most scanners . I can't imagine how anyone would be disappointed by it .
        • 068 4  I have owned at least a dozen scanners over 20 years including all-in-ones , flatbed , dedicated film , etc . . . This is far and away the best that I have used . Paper jams only if you overload it . Even though the feeder is relatively small it is easy to keep loading it as sheets go through . I have put in stacks of paper with everything from legal to 3x4 photos in the same batch without a problem ( make sure the option to handle random paper sizes is on ) . I can also load in 20 pictures and scan them strait into iPhoto in under 2 minutes . Fujitsu sells replacement pick-up pads and rollers to keep the feeder working perfectly , you need to replace these every year or so for about $30 but to keep this this running as well as it does it's a terrific deal .
        • 119 4  I am a remote worker and was really suffering while away from my main office without a scanner . Faxing is a hassle with a shared phone line . So this scanner has been amazing . Easy install and works like a champ with my mac air . I had a 10 + page document two sided and it went through perfectly . I got one for my 86 year old father ( pc user ) and he loves it too . The price seems high , but my satisfaction has been high , so its worth it .
        • 123 4  This is a great scanner . I bought it to scan bills , receipts , and articles from magazines for archival purposes . It took about 20 minutes to install all the software and start scanning my first stack of papers . It blew through the 20 sheets so quickly that I thought I must have done something wrong . But everything looked great . My only complaint is that the Abby FineReader software crashes whenever I try to run it on my PowerBook running Mac OS X 10.5.6 . I couldn't find any help for this on the Fujitsu website , but since it comes with a full version of Adobe Acrobat Professional ( v8 ) , its not a big deal .
        • 127 4  This is the best scanner ever . So simply made , fast and easy . I couldn't believe I have been suffering using Canon MP760 as a scanner all these years . I would recommend this scanner to everyone .
        • 158 4  I purchased my scanner a few weeks ago and I think its one of the best purchases I have made . It works flawlessly with my MacPro on Mac OS 10.5 ( Leopard ) It is incredibly fast and the software works quite well with it . My only issue is that I wish I could do a batch transfer in the OCR software . . . . that is , queue up the scanned docs so Fine Reader will automatically convert them to readable PDFs . There might be a way to do this , but I haven't found it yet . All-in-all I am very happy with this scanner . . . now I'm off to scan my old docs and get rid of mounds of paper ! !

      • 117 4  Although this is now an outdated model there were some things about this version which I wish were never changed . The software works great and the scanner has never given me a problem . I would say this is the best digital office product money can buy .
        • 136 4  I should have got this scanner earlier . As others note , this scanner is head-and-shoulders above all other scanners . Excellent suite of software , obviously high quality hardware .

      • 133 4  I've been scanning documents at home for many years and have used a variety of sheet-fed and multi-function scanners over many years . This by far is the best package of hardware and software that I've ever used . The scanner is as fast as advertised . You can scan documents into a variety of different types of software for organizing your paper output . The scanner automatically distinguishes black and white from color documents . If you want to save hard disk spaces you can scan everything in black and white . When scanning in duplex mode , both sides are scanned simultaneously without any loss of speed . The interface between the scanner and your software is the most elegant I have seen . Using the scanned documents is a snap .
        • 056 4  After having tried the Pentax Scanner for the Mac , it had to be returned . I purchased the Fujitsu scanner and it is a world of difference . It does everything a Scanner should do , with no hassle . If you have a Mac computer , and need a scanner , this is the one to buy .
        • 057 4  Here's the best thing I can say - - just bought a second one so I can have one in both of two places I live . I had very high expectations of this and it far exceeded even though . If you are looking for a small footprint scanner that works fast to keep paper documents in an electronic format , this is for you . Buy it .
        • 074 4  There are not many options out there for automatic document feed scanners for Macs at a reasonable price . This machine does a fantastic job at scanning documents clearly and on both sides . The software allows for easy placement of the images and the pdf file can be named immediately after you have stopped scanning . I could not be more pleased with the quailty and the performance of this scanner . I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to save paper and space by utilizing scanning options . Do not pass up this wonderful product for another more expensive option .
        • 094 4  After having this for one week , I've scanned all my documents into pdf . With the help of the management software yep we've gotten rid of all our boxes of files . Well worth the investment . From binders of double sided settlement paperwork to stacks of receipts , this scanner handles them all . Worth every penny !
        • 103 4  This is an awesome product . I can't believe the speed and ease of scanning documents . I would rate this as a must have for anyone that handles lots of docs or hates faxing . I use it for helping me with documents for many projects going on simultaneously . I am trying to get paperless and this really helping in our business .
        • 131 4  I have time to write this review , because much of my work is scanned to my mac , providing me with hours of leisure time . In all seriousness , this little gem was a gift to me and sat in the box for 6 months before I set it up . I though it would be just another appliance on my desk , then one day I really had to get a document signed and scanned and emailed right away . . . so I opened the box and decided to use my Scansnap . I now scan everything under the sun and have completely discontinued using my onboard fax modem . The document filing software is super easy , and it ties to my email program automatically . I wouldn't live without this for all the tea in China ! ! !
        • 140 4  Wonderful product . Easy to set up and use . Took only minutes to get going . Occasionally it will take two sheet at once , but that is the only problem I have encountered . It also is amazingly small and fits nicely in a home office . Highly recommended .
        • 146 4  Easy to install . The scanning process is straight forward and easy . It would have been easier if there were some first time user instructions and examples of moving from the scanned image to storage , etc . Once , I figured this out , it was a snap . I am very pleased .
        • 150 4  I found this scanner very easy to use with my Intel Mac . The Adobe Acrobat software is worth quite a bit , so as a whole this is good value for money . The Fine Reader software works well , and if you have a Mac , you can't buy it separately , it only comes with this bundle . The resulting , searchable PDFs , made with Fine Reader are a little bigger in filesize than I had hoped . That is the only downside . The scanner is neat , quiet , and easy to setup . The interface and software work well in a Mac environment . There's also a document holder included for scraps of paper , so they don't get lost inside the scanner . All in all , this is a very good product .

      • 148 4  An absolute must have . Our dental office is moving to a paperless system and this scanner was so valuable at scanning patient charts that I bought two . In 2 months we have scanned over one thousand charts , ranging from 12 - 130 pages each . Now what to do with the empty space where the file cabinets used to be ?
        • 118 4  Outstanding product . Very easy to use , as well as very user friendly . Well worth the higher price .

      • i distinctly remember my impression the first time steve jobs demo'ed the iphone . o @ # * $ @ # * $ . watching the scansnap slurp in a stack of papers and output them instantly in pdf form produced a similar reaction . so FREAKING FAST . * as other readers have expressed , the ocr is slow . if you don't need to ocr everything you scan , you'll be good . at this point , i've just decided that some things don't need ocr . * i heavily debated waiting for the upcoming s300m but ultimately decided to go in for the s510m . the dealbreaker was that the s300m does NOT come with adobe acrobat professional . in my opinion , this TOTALLY makes it the s510m worth it . the ability to optimize / compress / combine / split / adjust your pdfs is very very nice . * make sure to visit the fujitsu site for a $ [ . . . ] manufacturer's rebate . see the discussions on the amazon product page for the s510m more information . * this does photos , but my photo friend told me that the good quality 600dpi is going to give you fuzzy photos . i would imagine if you're not big on exact replication of your photos , you'll be fine . in my experience with images + text , no problems . * document clarity is excellent as others have indicated . you can set it up to scan one side ( simplex ) by default , two sides ( duplex ) , or auto-detect . and yes , it is stupid fast . * my only gripe is that there isn't a save as option right after you scan a document . you have to manually rename in finder . * you know things are different when you start conniving things that might need to be scanned so you can shred / throw them away . bye bye stacks of paper . the speed and ease of scanning is a game changer . there you have it . good stuff !
        • 025 4  after seeing the scansnap in action on a website , i must have spent a good months several pouring over the 10 + odd reviews on amazon for all the pros and cons . the possibility of going paperless was almost more than my inner productivity nerd could handle . so is it worth it ? * initial impressions : i distinctly remember my impression the first time steve jobs demo'ed the iphone . o @ # * $ @ # * $ . watching the scansnap slurp in a stack of papers and output them instantly in pdf form produced a similar reaction . so FREAKING FAST .
        • 030 4  I'm a 20 year Mac user who's tried Microtek , HP , and Epson scanners with little satisfaction . I read every review of this product before purchase and I'm happy to add my recommendation . It's fast , easy , works well , and the software alone is worth more than half the price . Yes , it jams occasionally and the interface is a little clunky , BUT IT WORKS . FAST . Easy setup and a small footprint are nice . The ABBYY only works on scanned docs , you can't use it on a previous pdf file , but the Acrobat has a pretty good OCR function as well . All in all , I'm very happy with this scanner .
        • 033 4  I agree with the enthusiasm of the other posters . Love the scanner . It's fast , quiet , and efficient . My only complaint , and the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 , is that the OCR software is fairly slow . If you have lots of documents to scan , you either have to wait for the FineReader software to finish each one individually before starting the next , or scan a bunch of them without the OCR , then send the batch to the FineReader software and go have dinner . If the FR software could queue up new documents while processing previously-scanned ones , this would be an absolutely ideal scanner . As it is , it's a very good scanner and in just a few days in my house , it has helped me immensely .
        • 058 4  Can't stand it - one of these days it will end up in pieces all over the place ! It CONSTANTLY double feeds and yes I have cleaned it , and cleaned it , and cleaned it per the instructions . One page at a time it is great - but if you need to do more than one sheet reliably then GO SOMEWHERE ELSE ! I keep my blood pressure down and go down the hall and into our managers office and use the group printer scanner and save both my temper , and my time . : - (
        • 137 4  My office has 5 of them . It's REALLY nice and no problem at all ! It's little expensive but it's make save your a lot time . I need buy one more . . . Because everybody want . . . LOL

      • ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) In general , the product works exactly as advertised : it scans all sorts of documents , and combined with DevonThink Pro Office for Mac's OCR capabilities , it does everything promised . The paperless office is definitely within reach with this unit , and I've been incredibly impressed with the speed of the scanning and the accuracy . It doesn't do such a great job with photos or graphics , but I bought the unit primarily to digitize old journal articles , manuscripts and home receipts . SHIPPING / DELIVERY : I appreciated the Amazon Marketplace sellers who could sell me this unit re-furbished without the bundled software packages of Adobe Aqcrobat Pro and Read IRIS , or the Cardiris software . I already own an OCR program and Acrobat , and did not want to shell out for the extra cost , I just wanted the unit itself . TechGalaxy delivered the unit as promised , in great condition , and earlier than expected even using standard shipping . PERFORMANCE & INTEGRATION WITH MAC OS X ( Leopard & Snow Leopard ) : Set up and installation were very easy , just popped in the driver and installed the software drivers with no issues . In general , I did not experience the technical issues reported by other users using Snow Leopard . This may be because of my workflow with DevonThink OCR , I usually just scan to a folder and don't use the quick menu anyway . Scanning documents and changing the settings between sets of what I'm scanning has been pretty easy through the scansnap settings menu . It FLEW through scanning a large file cabinet of things in a single afternoon , a project I thought would take an entire weekend ! The reason I didn't give it five stars is because of the issue where the unit does not like to scan longer receipts or times when it has paper jams . These are infrequent in general , and usually because of older crumpled receipts , or old articles that haven't been fanned enough ( it does sometimes scan two pages at once instead of a single sheet at a time ) . So it's not really a set & forget solution , you do need to watch it or check your docs later . If you set up an automator workflow to scan to a folder , then set up the docs for OCR later at night when you're not working on the machine ( OCR is super-time and processor intensive if you're doing a large batch all at once - best to save it for a time you don't need to be on at the same time ) . I have to say it is AWESOME to wake up in the morning to accurate OCR'd , searchable documents that once sat in your file cabinet gathering dust . I love that now I can reference old articles for my research with a few keystrokes ! I'm a graduate student and cannot recommend this unit enough for academic uses . But be warned : refurbished units do NOT come with the Adobe Acrobat Professional software OR the the IRIS OCR software .
        • 003 4  I have used the product for little over a month now with Apple Mac OS X Leopard . The first impulse I felt after seeing this ScanSnap in action was to get all my documents out of the drawer , scan them all and dispose off the space robbing file folders / boxes or whatchamacallit ! It's one of the best investments I have made . It works flawlessly . It gives new meaning to the word ease of use ! The inclusion of Adobe Acrobat 8 ( not yet fully / officially supported on Leopard but so far works fine ) itself is worth the price . Fujitsu seems to have understood very well the concept of elegance in simplicity so much espoused by Apple in its products and philosophy . This is one of those products where you can't think of anything to add to make it better !
        • 005 4  I'm a computer professional with over 24 years of computing experience and I have to say that this is probably one of best technology purchases I've made in quite some time . I've always been a paper pack rat and after looking at a electronic document management package called DevonThink with it's tight integration with the ScanSnap series of scanners I took the plunge and purchased this unit . Within just a week I scanned in excess of 800 pages of documents and started filing them away properly and cleaning out the filling cabinet . The only negative review complained about how it does not handle different page sizes in the same ADF load and this is partially incorrect . I've found that if I place the larger pages in the front and the smaller pages in the rear that the scanner will detect them automatically and it works like a champ , and at this point you can re-arrange them via the include Adobe Acrobat Professional that comes with the scanner . The quality of the scanned pages is great ( I used a Brother 7820N MFC device before , but this is better ) , they seem to feed in relatively straight all the time ( however you can have the ScanSnap software straighten them in case they don't ) , I really can't say enough about how great this device is . The other part I'd like to mention is that it works with 10.5 ( Leopard ) without any problems . So one last comment , I'm usually not that guy to write a review or better yet rave about a scanner but this thing is changing my life for the better and if you're looking to archive your documents and get rid of the clutter you can't go wrong with this purchase . . . it's a must have .
        • 011 4  I purchased the Fujitsu ScanSnap for my office based on the review from a CPA firm my company contracts . This little guy is AMAZING . So easy to set up , super compact , and scans really fast ! It scans double-sided , in color , and scans even the tiniest receipts and pieces of odd-shaped paper , and the software allows you to keep all your scanned files organized . With the scansnap you can get rid of your copier and possibly fax machine ( since most faxes go directly to emails anyway , just scan and email the PDF ) . I'm now purchasing one to use at home to keep all my receipts organized on my computer ( vs having little scraps of paper all over the place ) and also to keep a paperless home as much as possible . The scansnap prevents clutter and cuts down on paper use ! i love it .
        • 017 4  OMG I think I'm in love . I ordered the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M and it arrived today . This thing is AWESOME ! I've been doing video photo montages as sort of a side business to my graphics and my big problem has been scanning the hundreds of photos on my flatbed scanner . When I saw an ad for the little ScanSnap 310M I looked at it , but then found it's big brother the 510M . Mac version . I think I'm more excited about this baby than any other equipment I've had in the last 10 years . I can stick a stack of photos , documents ( even double sided ) etc . , in this baby and scan them to either JPG files or PDF files . The PDFs can be all one file , or separate files . I did a test run of a stack of snapshots that have been sitting in a box for more than 10 years . Popped them in there , hit a button with the machine set at BEST ( second to the highest setting ) they auto-fed and scanned in less than 2 seconds each . I ran a test and burned a DVD slide show and watched it on my HDTV and it was GORGEOUS ! I even installed the business card scanning software that was included ( Cardiris ) and it worked beautifully as well . I haven't run the regular OCR program that came with it , but that's not really a priority for me . I'm just WAY tickled that this thing is everything I was looking for . The documentation on how to integrate the Cardiris software isn't as clear as it should be . The information is there , it's just not in the manual , it's in the ' read me ' file . The box had a sticker with a web address to get the latest version of the software for Leopard , but it was a dead link . I've got Leopard and the software on the CD works fine .
        • 018 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) If you are thinking to go paperless ( or reduce the clutter ) in your office or home and keep digital archives this is the product you need .
        • 020 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I bought this scanner from Amazon just before Christmas after reading many reviews . I must say it was hard to spend $495 on a scanner when you can buy a cheap one for $79 . But wow , am I glad I spent the cash . This scanner rocks , especially with the bundled OCR software . Abbyy FineReader is a little slow , even on my dual-core 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro , but by that I mean it takes about 10 seconds per page to produce a fully-searchable PDF . The scanner itself rips through a page in less than two seconds ( both sides ! ) , so FineReader becomes the bottleneck if you you want to OCR a large number of documents . But it's not like you have to stand there and supervise . Just dump a stack of papers in the feeder , press the button and walk away . If you value your time , buy this scanner . Some people have asked how well it scans photos . Great ! The ScanSnap software includes the option to scan directly into iPhoto . I've already scanned hundreds of old snapshots that have been sitting in boxes for ages because it was too much hassle to scan them one-at-a-time on my old flatbed scanner . Finally , I just want to mention something I haven't seen in other reviews . The scanner is also bundled with CardIris business card scanning software . This software does an OK job of scanning and OCR'ing business cards , which you can then import into Address Book or pretty much any other contact manager or database / spreadsheet app . Unfortunately it's a PowerPC app , but it runs fine on my Intel Mac . The OCR function is not as accurate as FineReader , but it allows you to edit each card before saving .

        • 023 4  I have had document scanners for years from the single feed Visioneer to ADF HP 6350 to Xerox Documate 510 . After using the SnapScan S510M , I am not sure that what I did before with my previous scanners can even be called scanning ( maybe ' snailing ) . The S510M is the fastest ( by light years ) ; scans both sides at once ; and , has a super-small footprint to boot ! When I unpackaged it I thought I had been ripped-off it was so small . Then when I set it up ( very easy ) and scanned my test document , it ran through so fast that I thought it malfunctioned - then I saw the SnapScan menu appear with a perfect ( even straight ) document . I ran a color brochure through got a perfect two-sided color scan in 4 seconds ! [ my Xerox Documate 510 took 19 second for one side ! ! ] And it even came with Acrobat Professional 8 on top of that ( alone worth at least $300 ] The time I have saved in three days more than paid for this SnapScan . Unbelievable . I could not be more pleased with this product . 5 + Stars .
        • 024 4  If you're not hip to the ScanSnap , you're not really scanning . I don't have anything new to add ; I only want to confirm what's already been said . All the excellent reviews you've been reading are true . Best . . . purchase . . . . ever !
        • 027 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) This is a great machine .
        • 029 4  I've never written a product review but have now used this ScanSnap scanner for about a year and am consistently impressed with it in every way . ( Connecting it to my Macintosh Powerbook running OS 10.4 was a mindless snap ! ) If you've ever had a document-feed copier or fax machine that grabbed more than one page at a time you might be skeptical about this scanner similarly misbehaving . But it never has , not once - - and I've stacked 30 + pages in the feeder at a time , with papers of varying size and weight ( thickness ) . It speedily makes 2 - sided color scans in my choice of PDF or JPG format and gives me a choice of 4 quality settings ( and the lowest quality setting is almost always plenty good enough ) . It detects blank pages and eliminates them ( if you choose that option in it's preferences . It's made my paper management responsibilities immensely easier , allowing me to file and retrieve documents while eliminating stacks of documents I'd saved . This product has easily been worth the $450 I paid for it , and the little bits of time I've invested to archive so much stuff . Oh , and it takes up 2 / 3 less surface space than my old flatbed scanner , so it's always plugged in and handy to the side of my desk .
        • 035 4  I bought a refurbished S510M from a seller that I reached through an Amazon link and discovered upon receiving it that refurbished machines DO NOT come with the Adobe software , even though the seller's product description specifically stated that the Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Professional for Mac would be included . A letter from Fujitsu with the machine explained that refurbished machines do not include Adobe software , and that without it the scanner would have only basic functionality . I am returning the scanner and will buy the newer non-refurbished version that includes the necessary software .
        • 038 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Fujitsu's ScanSnap scanner is a little powerhouse scanner - great for getting organized . It scans pages very very quickly . Comes with Acrobat Professional which gives you lots of flexibility in deleting pages , combining documents etc . The ABBYY Finereader OCR software does a great job of making the documents searchable . The only drawback is that it takes a long time to process each page .

        • 041 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I've owned and used a Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 Clr 18PPM / 36IPM Dupl Scanner with my PC for more than a year . When I recently replaced my PC with an iMac , I budgeted for the purchase of the Scansnap S510M ( the Mac-compatible Scansnap ) . Because I have a lot of documents to deal with , and I don't want to be without this scanner . My S510M has already scanned , in a stunningly short time , three years ' worth of personal financial documents , in time for me to take the hard copies to a local shred-a-thon event to be commercially shredded . Besides scanning documents into pdfs for archiving , I often use it to scan documents to be sent as email attachments . Elegant is defined as pleasingly graceful and stylish in appearance or manner , and of a solution to a problem as pleasingly ingenious and simple . In both senses , the Scansnap is an elegant machine . When closed it takes up little space on my desktop , and it opens simply to display only two buttons - on / off and scan . I insert the pages to scan at the top , hit the scan button , and within seconds the document is scanned and named and I can control where it is saved on my computer . The S510M works as smoothly as the S500 does . The Mac Scansnap Manager software interface is a little different from the Windows version , but I'm getting used to it . Considering that the Scansnap ships with the full Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 software , it's in my opinion a good value for the money . If I had to choose a must-have piece of computer hardware , this would be it .

        • 043 4  Fast , fast , fast . I'm churning through scans like never before . I'm in a paper-intensive business and also have stacks of papers from graduate school that I don't refer to often but that I still want to have available just in case . All told , I'm talking reams and reams of paper . I put a small stack on the scanner , press a button , and I'm done . That easy . I also have an HP OfficeJet PSC 6300 all-in-one with a sheet feeder . This ScanSnap puts the HP to shame in all scanning ways possible . Here are some key points to know about the ScanSnap 510M scanner : 1 ) This scanner comes with the full version of Adobe Acrobat . This scanner is worth the price for that software alone . Check the price on the software and you'll agree . 2 ) It does photos , too . I have five shoe boxes loaded with photos . I'm digitizing everyone for back up purposes in case of fire , loss , etc . I put a small stack on board and its scans them right to iPhoto . Scans them in at 600 dpi which is fine given that they are snapshots and are scanned in pretty quickly ( though not as quickly as a document at normal resolution . ) 3 ) Small footprint . Small enough that my wife actually lets me keep it on the desk . Now that's small ! 4 ) Not sure if the Mac version ( which is what I have ) also works with Windows or not .
        • 045 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Pros : 1 . No easy and quick way to merge PDF files ( one can do with Adobe Acrobat but I would prefer dragging one PDF over another to merge them )
        • 048 4  I had high hopes when I purchased the ScanSnap S510M scanner . Many productivity bloggers have indicated it was one of their favorite purchases and a great tool in the fight against clutter . To say my expectations were met would be an understatement . It's really hard to understand how good this little ( and I mean little ) wonder is until you use it . Not only is it very fast , but it also includes the most accurate OCR I have ever seen . Even complex magazine ad layouts are no match for it . If you use a Mac and are in the market for an auto sheet-fed scanner then you would do well to go for the ScanSnap S510M . It's literally a joy to use !
        • 049 4  The scanner is extremely fast and provides very good quality . The software included ( Acrobat Professional , and ABFFY OCR software ) is easily worth half the cost of the 5510M package ; the OCR recognition has been literally perfect while scanning a couple of textbooks that I wanted to digitize to carry around with my laptop . The whole package has been dynamite and I highly recommend it for Mac users .
        • 051 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) In the first month of use , the ScanSnap has allowed me to digitally archive a large stack of documents . The included optical character recognition software is very good ; while not perfect , particularly on documents with some distortion or noise , it exceeds every other solution I've tried . This device has paid for itself already , allowing me to do in two hours what would have previously taken many days . Two minor issues 1 . On five ( out of 500 + ) documents scanned , the device has jammed . In each case I suspect use of the included sheet carrier would have prevented the issue . The device does such a great job even on slightly wrinkled paper that I perhaps expected too much . . . until two important receipts jammed and were then crumpled as the device continued to feed . Lesson : when in doubt , slow down and use the carrier . 2 . The Mac software is very good : fast , intuitive , and everything else you'd want for something that will be used many times a day . But . . . keyboard shortcuts are not Mac standard , and some additional user interface should be built for commonly-used operations . Example : changing between scanning profiles ( B + W vs . color , simplex vs . duplex ) is accessed via Settings . . . Cmd-S . Mac standard would be Preferences . . . Cmd - , , or better yet providing a separate button or keyboard shortcut to toggle profiles . Overall , the above issues do not take away from the usefulness of the device . It's earned a spot on my desk , and the relatively high price is justified by the utility of the device and included software .

        • 055 4  This is an awesome scanner , worked beautifully with my Mac , unlike anything Canon or Hp ever does , until . . . Snow Leopard came out . It is now 6 weeks later and not only haven't they fixed it , but there is no announcement or anything on their web site . So if you are using Snow Leopard , I wouldn't buy this until Fujitsu fixes that . It will still scan but about half of its functions are not working , including the critical Scan to Folder . The only way to get to a completed scan is to attach it to an email and then drag it out - a complete pain . So , buyer beware . Once they fix it , this is a great scanner again .
        • 059 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) When I got lost one day in my labyrinth of stacked journal articles , receipts , photographs , and other paper detritus , I knew I needed help . While Timothy Ferriss , author of The 4 - Hour Workweek : Escape 9 - 5 , Live Anywhere , and Join the New Rich , might suggest outsourcing the scanning all my documents into digital format for storage , in order to eliminate the paper yet retain the useful information , I first decided to go the manual route . This meant finding a good , easy-to-use , fast , document scanner that works on my Mac , and I think I found just that in the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner . With a footprint smaller than an 8.5x11 sheet of paper , the ScanSnap is really cutting through my stacks of documents . It handles multiple pages and makes fast , two-sided , color pdfs of the documents with just one button push . It also easily scans in photographs , business cards , envelopes , etc . The software gives you a choice of saving the pdf to a folder , emailing it , printing it , importing into iPhoto , part of iLife ' 09 , or creating a searchable pdf . The latter makes the contents of your pdf document searchable by your OS or other search / filter applications , for instant retrieval of information buried in a large document repository . One touch pdf creation , indeed . ( review by Kendall Giles )

        • 062 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I am amazed by this product . No issues .
        • 067 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I have owned at least a dozen scanners over 20 years including all-in-ones , flatbed , dedicated film , etc . .
        • 069 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I bought this so I could send faxes from home .
        • 071 4  The speed at which this product scans the paper is amazing . And it scans both sides at the same time . Butter my butt and call me a biscuit . I'm impressed . I'm horrible at keeping up with paperwork and I'm hopeful that this will help my ADD self get a little more organized . When the kids bring papers home , calendars , phone lists , field trip permission slips , fundraiser paperwork . . I will scan it so WHEN ( not IF ) I lose it , I can reprint it . YES . I've been saving my son's Kindergarten work but I decided to scan it and save it . INCREDIBLY fast and does a beautiful job . I like to think I'm up to date on the latest and greatest but I've never seen anything work this well . I scanned documents that I know I couldn't replace if I lost them . . I scanned artwork from my kids . . things that I'd like to keep but with 6 kids I just don't have room to keep the original items . What a great product . Worth the price .
        • 072 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I bought this scanner last month after reading many positive reviews on it by others .
        • 075 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) The product works as advertised - First class ! Works great with MacBook . Follow instructions on entering software . Only issue - when scanning individual photos , photos feed best when inserted with back of photo facing out . May be due to the glossy finish . Have fun !
        • 077 4  I've tried several times to go paperless in my home office . Each time I'd get started , but end up creating stacks of things to be scanned . Finally , I'd just go back to filing the papers as it was just so much faster . Make a label , stick it in a file and be done . The ScanSnap makes it just as fast to scan the document , receipt - whatever and file it electronically ! Works beautifully . I set up an account on Mozy to create an offline back up of the critical materials . That along with Time Machine backing up everything on my Mac automatically , I have three copies just as easy as one . While it took me a couple of months to decide to take the $499 plunge , I'm glad I did . I love this little machine . Small , fast and easy .
        • 078 4  Honestly , I would have to say that this is one of the best electronic products I have ever bought . The ScanSnap works exactly like advertised . It is extremely easy to use . Just put your document in the feeder and push the scan button . It scan's multi-page documents both front and back quickly and automatically saves them in PDF form . You have the option of saving the document as a text searchable PFD . This is a must have product for anyone wanting to rid themselves of the clutter of paper . Works like a charm on a Mac . It is extremely easy to find documents after scanning with spotlight .
        • 079 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) In general , the product works exactly as advertised : it scans all sorts of documents , and combined with DevonThink Pro Office for Mac's OCR capabilities , it does everything promised .
        • 080 4  In general , the product works exactly as advertised : it scans all sorts of documents , and combined with DevonThink Pro Office for Mac's OCR capabilities , it does everything promised . • 081 4  I purchased the Fujitsu Scansnap for my law practice last year and it is easily one of the best investments I've ever made . It is better than advertised . Amazingly , those product videos on Youtube are accurate . You stick the pages in , press the button , and you're done . It is very fast compared to the Brother MFC auto feed scanner I used to use . Now , is it a perfect device ? No , occasionally I have problems with papers getting stuck , but you will have that problem with any device . And it also comes with Adobe Acrobat Professional which is a $300 - $400 value . Get this , I've noticed that some people buy the Fujitsu Scan Snap , take the Adobe Acrobat Professional software for themselves , and sell the scanner on Ebay for nearly the purchase price ( in some cases more than msrp ) . So , basically they get a free , or nearly free copy of Adobe Professional ( I'm not recommending this , but just wanted to let you know what a great deal it is ) . I use the ScanSnap on a daily basis and I love it . It is about the size of a toaster . Some advice : NEVER , NEVER , NEVER put pages in your scan snap with staples ! ! ! ! ! ! ! The staples will scratch the glass , and you will wind up with lines going up and down your pdf's and there's really nothing you can do about it ( in color scans , that is ) . Also , you should get the F1 cleaner . You will need to use this cleaner occasionally to wipe down the glass , the rubber rollers , and the other parts . As you scan in a bunch of documents , the ink will start to accumulate on those parts and will make them sticky . Your pages will start to get stuck with increased frequence . Also , as you do a bunch of color scans , if you don't clean it , you'll see a bunch of really ugly lines going up and down your pdf . All you have to do is use the F1 cleaner and you're good to go . Use cloth material instead of napkins .
        • 082 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) It does its job . Really fast . Scan well on color pages but not black and white pictures . There were several pictures from a fashion magazine I wanted to keep so I scanned it in and it turn out really bad . The scan looked like pencil sketchings and you cannot see any color gradation at all ( basically black and white . . . no greys ) . I gave it 3 stars cos its good overall if you dont need to scan black and white pictures . Plus I think its a bit expensive for a pretty basic function .

        • 084 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Fast , great software , all the scan to ( file email print etc ) options I could want . I am so blown away by this , it just works . 10 years of waiting for a decent document imaging solution for my dream of the paperless office was finally realized . You simply have to buy this if you are a Mac user looking to e-file your papers and go paperless . Expensive but worth every penny . The first page I scanned went so fast I thought the thing was broken . . .
        • 087 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) This product has solved my desktop paper organization issues . I have not had need to try more . )
        • 091 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I've been a long time user of HP duplex scanners with automatic document feeds .
        • 093 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) After having this for one week , I've scanned all my documents into pdf . With the help of the management software yep we've gotten rid of all our boxes of files . Well worth the investment . From binders of double sided settlement paperwork to stacks of receipts , this scanner handles them all . Worth every penny !
        • 095 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) This is a great document scanner !
        • 100 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Got mine yesterday , installed it with not a single problem , and scanned an entire file folder of bank statements ( one PDF for each month with an average of 5 pages per statement ) . Every PDF was clear , and easy to read . I used the Best setting , and was surprised at the fast scan time . The file folder of statements is now confetti , and the PDF's are archived . I have several thousand more things to convert to PDF's and confetti .
        • 102 4  The Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M is easy to use and produces great results . It scans very quickly and is remarkably compact . The bundled Acrobat Pro is a great value as well , retailing for over $400 . We've converted some complicated pages from image to text using the included OCR software with good results . I wish I'd purchased it sooner .
        • 104 4  ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner I generally purchase electronic equipment with a healthy amount of skepticism for manufacturer claims . This scanner , however , is all that it's cracked up to be . I teach an online class and I return corrected papers on a daily basis . My previous scanner was giving me a bad case of scanner arm . I had the product unwrapped , installed and running within 15 minutes of delivery . I use it daily and I especially appreciate the ability to scan to email while saving a copy for my files . Since the product was made for a mac , there has been no tweaking necessary . Truly plug and play !
        • 105 4  It won't be any surprise , given the trend of good reviews , for me to follow suit . I am another * very * satisfied customer . Like one of the recent reviewers , I realized you had to have the ScanSnap Manager open for the button scan to work . If you don't have it open , the LED on the scanner will flash . It works well with the stock ABBYY FineReader , and Acrobat , as well as the DEVONthink suite , and Readiris . Here is a question I had for you other ScanSnap owners . . . now that you've got this fabulous device , and have scanned up your stuff . . . do you have an expensive scanner collecting dust , or are you finding continued uses for it ? It seems to me , to be able to keep free from the clutter , by digitizing as much as possible , is worth the price of admission .
        • 108 4  I have been using Mac products exclusively for over 20 years now and have had one problem or another with scanners . So for the last 10 years I have accumulated files worth of paper with almost no hope of ever PDFing them . Along came Sam , another Mac person who recommended the Scan Snap . Well its a > $400 scanner so I refreined from its purchase . I get a 500 dollar refund recently and made the purchase from Amazon . Well its the best computer peripheral that I have ever purchased and in the last month have digitized a library of over 800 classic surgical papers . It works without any effort . It corrects paper orientation and the PDF's come out great . The speed is over 15 pages per minute and in color . I literally went three hours before a jam occurred on a paper that had some stains on it from 20 years ago . It was removed and rescanned without a problem . This device is small and doesn't consume alot of desk space . Its light weight so again portable . I even bought a carrying case for it ( the old model case still fits the new model ) so when I need to I carry it to the office . This peripheral has saved me a few thousand dollars and hours of time . I even threw out my antiquated file cabinets which my wife became elated about . Yes , all six , heavy scratched file cabinets are now gone and in its place a nice white 6x 6x 11.5 inch peripheral that does the work of at least 3 people . Buy it ! For some it will save you a lot of money and time . The documents are great and easily retrievable . Good luck and Good scanning from home or office .
        • 109 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) This is a really nicely made product .
        • 111 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) This thing is simply amazing .
        • 113 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I bought this scanner after looking for an affordable solution to clearing up the paper that had accumulated in our house . This scanner has been fabulous and is really attractively priced ( especially when there are rebates ) for a unit used at home . I have been able to clear up multiple drawers from several file cabinets that included : taxes , receipts , recipes , magazine articles , bills , etc . I now am confident that I can actually located something when I need it for taxes or warranty work . The scans are clear and the text recognition is very good . In addition I find the software to be very flexible and works with my workflow . I have two different scenarios for use : 1 ) Daily As I get my mail and open it or pay a bill , I mark it paid and immediately scan it and then shred it ( this is where I can't already get an electronic bill ) . 2 ) Bulk scanning Here I will typically sort paper into sets , this is where the software flexibility comes in . I take everything that needs double-sided scanning and is the same number of pages and I set the software to create a new document every n-pages . Then I can stick a stack of pages in that aren't related and let it do its job . If I have a stack of single sided items I make sure to mark it like that in the software and everything goes smoothly . Originally I bought this when I was using OS X 10.4 ( Tiger ) , upgraded to 10.5 ( Leopard ) with no problem . I had to wait till a new driver and software was released before upgrading to 10.6 ( Snow Leopard ) . It works just as smoothly as before with the new drivers . This has really reduced the amount of paperwork that stacks up in the house and with Spotlight on the Mac , I can find these documents way better than I could in my filing cabinet . I highly recommend this product to those looking to reduce paper !

        • 116 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Although this is now an outdated model there were some things about this version which I wish were never changed . The software works great and the scanner has never given me a problem . I would say this is the best digital office product money can buy .
        • 120 4  This is our fourth ScanSnap . We keep adding them to various workstations around the office because they are so easy to use . The S510M is designed for Macs and , of course , is easy to install and use . Great way to go paperless . Great shopping experience .
        • 128 4  I have had several scanners to work with Macintosh and have generally been pleased with them . We still have an all-in-one flatbed printer / scanner / copier and would replace it immediately if it failed . We are in sales and the ScanSnap was purchased in an attempt to be more efficient in our home office . So far it has worked perfectly . We will scan in that sheet of paper in an instant , create a searchable pdf and file it in our hard drive . The multiple sheets we get as sales reports that are created by management that seem to be designed to burden the sales people are scanned in a couple minutes and filed in a searchable file that we can take with us on our laptops . I have not explored all the possibilities but it is working simply and easily for what I wanted it to do .
        • 129 4  Purchased after seeing it in use throughout a hospital in Winter Haven FL . I now scan all of my important papers and shred the originals . I have eliminated all my home files . The ScanSnap was simple to setup and easy to use . It just works .
        • 134 4  The ScanSnap S510M Scanner is the best investment I have made for time saving document handling .
        • 135 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I should have got this scanner earlier . As others note , this scanner is head-and-shoulders above all other scanners . Excellent suite of software , obviously high quality hardware .
        • 139 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Wonderful product . Easy to set up and use . Took only minutes to get going . Occasionally it will take two sheet at once , but that is the only problem I have encountered . It also is amazingly small and fits nicely in a home office . Highly recommended .
        • 141 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I haven't had a sheet fed scanner in years , but decided I needed one to tame the mountain of paperwork generated by my business , hobbies , and civic involvement as secretary for the local food bank , and as a city councilor .
        • 143 4  After reading the review on Amazon and from MacWorld , I order the ScanSnap S510M . It met or exceeded all my expectations . I had 4 filing cabinet drawers of old files that I wanted to scan . I accomplished my goal within two weekends . The unit is fast and does a good job of grabbing one page at a time . It scans duplex nicely and software was easy to use . I'd recommend for large or faster scanning jobs .
        • 144 4  If only all hardware and software worked as well and as reliably ! The ScanSnap fulfills the promise of a paperless office . All my documents get scanned and thrown out . It is a dream come true . The unit is so fast that even long documents ( like wills ) go through quickly and without a hitch . The document feeder is near perfect . Access to the paper path , in the rare occurrence of a jam , is quick and simple . I have recommended this unit ( or its Windows equivalent ) to many friends and they all thank me . Guaranteed , it will not sit idle . I also gave away my multi-function fax / scanner / printer and signed up for a fax service . The service with this scanner is the perfect solution . Only thing I miss is a flat bed scanner . HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !
        • 145 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) Easy to install . The scanning process is straight forward and easy . It would have been easier if there were some first time user instructions and examples of moving from the scanned image to storage , etc . Once , I figured this out , it was a snap . I am very pleased .
        • 147 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) An absolute must have . Our dental office is moving to a paperless system and this scanner was so valuable at scanning patient charts that I bought two . In 2 months we have scanned over one thousand charts , ranging from 12 - 130 pages each . Now what to do with the empty space where the file cabinets used to be ?
        • 151 4  This has been perfect for scanning all my paperwork . I've tried other desktop scanners , but they take forever to scan . The ScanSnap scans so fast that you think something went wrong . I can just save the scans as PDFs right to my Documents folder for archiving . Perfect !

        • 155 4  This review is from : ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) I decided for the New Year to start to make a digital office . I have been scanning all my receipts and statements to save them as PDF , and I have started to go back to scan past years receipts and statements , so as to weed out my paper files . My flatbed scanner is fine for a single sheet , but I was looking at hundreds of sheets . A friend recommended the ScanSnap S510M . It is absolutely amazing . I cannot believe how fast it scans a whole pile of papers , even if they are of mixed size . I think it has only jammed twice , and both times it was with a page that was very wrinkled . At first I thought it was a bit pricey , but then I found out you get Adobe Acrobat Professional , as well as some other programs . I have not really used the other programs , but I use Acrobat all the time now . This is really a must have if you plan to create a digital office for your documents .

It was great until I upgraded to Snow Leopard now its just a paper weight . I cant use it until they come out with an update to fix it . Fujitsu says it could be until the end of December before I could use it again . Hopefully its fix before tax time because that was the reason I bought this thing .

I was reading of Adobe Professional so strongly I was looking to have a black one at home and the white one at work . I got the black one and when I finally get around to using it things should be fine - the white one is now in someone else's home . Wish I'd read MAC sooner . Just in case there is someone else out there who doesn't read - this is for a MAC ! I could have sent it back but I was trying to think of ways I could use it and 30 days zipped by ! Oh well , my friend says it's going to help him .

      • ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner ( Electronics ) just got this scanner yesterday , so there may be many features i dont even know about yet , but i am now officially on my way to a paperless home office . i just scanned all of my 2006 bellsouth phone bills , 84 pages in under 2 minutes ( yes , all at once without a paper jam ) . i set the compression to high and speed to fast . since there is no need to make these searchable lower qualtity works just fine . had scansnap output all into one pdf , a whopping 6mb ! love it as i can now shredd those hated bellsouth bills ! here some advice to help you save time getting up to speed : think about how you want to organize your papers . for example , i have a folder called phone bills in which there are subfolders like bellsouth , which further have subfolders for 2006 , 2007 , etc then you have to decide how you want scansnap to goup the scans . everything into one big pdf , or should it create a separate pdf for every 1 , 2 , 3 or more pages ? this will also depend on the type of doc you are working with and how pages you have . you can set the software to work in various modes too , like to file , to folder , to email , to print . i found that to file is the most straightforward method for what i am doing . i simply have the software name each file untitled with a consecutive number . that way when i set it to save to 。

2007 each monthly bill will be numbered in order , highest being the latest . but then again , you can do anything you want ! what it supposedly can do but have not figured out yet is how make the program automatically make the resulting pdf searchable ( in essence its plain text but still looks like a scan ) .
        • 013 4  After using the ScanSnap for over 1 month daily and scanning in over 1000 pages I would recommend this product . One negative - the unit comes with OEM Adobe Professional 8.0 , not 9.0 and no free or inexpensive upgrade path for the user .

        • 050 4  This product has been wonderful in helping make my life paper free . Everything I can scan gets scanned . Receipts , deposit slips , bank statements , letters , notes , service agreements , journal entries or anything else you want to put into a cyber notebook can be made easy with this product . Setup takes 10 minutes . Highly recommended ! !
        • 126 4  Been using this for about 3 weeks now - very nice . Highly efficient , fast and easy to use . Excellent piece of equipment - why did it take us so long to get it ?
