Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker

  • - - I wanted something with a small footprint . I live in a NYC apt and cook only for myself , my baby , and sometimes a meal for 2 w my boyfriend . I wanted a 3 or 4 cup cooker . - - I wanted a steamer . I knew I would likely use the steam function as much as the ricemaking function ( hello healthy and convenient meals ) , to steam veggies , fish , chicken , dumplings , buns , etc . Because I cook for my baby , the steam function is also really important so that I can steam veggies and other food , and then blend them for him . - - I wanted something that could cook rice AND steam at the SAME TIME . I am a busy woman , and like to multitask , and want my appliances to as well . Many of the rice cookers that also come with a steamer tray only allow you to steam OR cook rice ( the steamer tray sits at the bottom of the rice pot ) . Or the ones with a steamer that sit on top and allow you to cook rice underneath are usually 5 cup or larger ricemakers . I couldn't find a single one that combined all three of these elements together . ( FYI , in case you are looking for it , I was able to find only ONE fuzzy logic ricecooker that was small ( 3 cup ) and also had a steaming tray and steaming function - - the Zojirushi Rizo Micom with the cool design . But the steam tray sits at the bottom of the pot , so doesn't allow you to cook rice and steam food at the same time ) So now I have had this Cuisinart for a while and am very happy with it . It cooks brown rice beautifully ( I cook with low-sodium chicken broth for flavor , and have never had a problem with bubbling over ) , I steam veggies on top , and my meal is done when the switch flicks off . It's nice when the flavor of whatever is steaming on top ( and the marinades ) drip down to flavor the rice . Of course I have to play around with timing to make sure it all finishes at the right time , but it's not a big deal . It's small , cleans up easily ( all parts dishwasher safe , although a quick scrub in the sink usually does it ) , and is just fantastic because I feel like it's a machine that's equal parts rice cooker and steamer ( rather than a ricecooker that you can use to steam as an afterthought ) . If you are big on making perfect rice and you're all about the rice , then this is probably not the machine for you - - you can find something better out there . But if you're big on steaming food and want to cook rice too ( and often see yourself doing both at the same time ) , this is perfect . I'm buying 2 as Christmas presents for my friends !
    • 001 4  It's easy to clean and sure looks great on your countertop ! Positive feedback stops here . I made a mess out of cooking rice ( all the negative reviews are true ) until I figured that I should use slightly less water than the recommended quantity . After that , I spent 1 year using it nonstop ( we eat rice every day ) . 365 days later , the non-stick bowl is BADLY chipped , like little bubbles that burst on the bottom and left pinhead-sized chips . I swear that I never used anything else than the included plastic scoop ( and sponge for cleaning ) and never ever scratched it , so I'm 100% sure the non-stick coating quality is to blame . Add to that that non-stick coating is toxic * , this baby is out of my kitchen as soon as I can afford a Zojirushi . They're not as elegants , but they last forever . For more info on teflon toxicity , visit http : / / www.ewg.org
    • 004 4  I love my Cuisinart 4 - cup rice cooker ! It's just the right size for a single cook or for a couple . I've made brown and wild rice in it with good results , and steamed broccoli and tofu in the steamer basket at the same time for a quick , easy meal . It's also wonderful for making oatmeal in the mornings with no stirring or burning . So nice to have breakfast waiting when you get out of the shower ! The non-stick cooking surface makes for easy cleanup , too . Tip : If you spray the inside of the cooking pot with a bit of nonstick cooking spray , you won't have any trouble with boiling over .
    • 007 4  I am amazed that people are having problems with this product . I rinse and soak my rice in a bowl with a strainer ( a necessity for non-sticky rice ) , put 2 cups of rice and 2 cups of water in the pot - and it's fine ( I don't put the steamer basket in there because it is not necessary for just rice - could that cause the overflow ? ) . I have absolutely perfect rice very single time . This is the best thing since sliced bread . . . . my husband and son love rice - and this has changed my life . I would pay $100 for this product . I cannot imagine why people are having problems with overflowing and bad rice . . . I follow the instructions in the manual - and it's great . I'm not one for gadgets - but this is a must have !
    • 008 4  We use this cooker at least once a day - - in the morning to cook oatbran cereal , in the evening to cook brown rice . We bought it after a few close calls burning rice on the stove , and have never had a problem with burnt rice since ( it has never been undercooked , either ) . I'll admit that I did not really care for the brown rice or oatbran cereal my husband needed to eat for sugar-busters until we found this cooker . Now I really enjoy them ! Pros : Compact , attractive , warming mode , great results time after time . Cons : Relatively small capacity , top gets very hot , can boil over if you do not use oil , have to unplug it to shut it off . Since rice expands , it's important to read the guidelines and not try to cook too much . We find using about a teaspoon of olive oil eliminates any boil over . Also , for the hot cereal , try adding dried fruit or nuts - - it's great this way !
    • 010 4  This is the most used small appliance in my kitchen ! I have owned mine for over a year now , using it every other day atleast . It is so simple to use , taking away the mess and guess work of cooking rice on the stove top . Nonstick insert is clearly marked with measurements for water , making it easy to fill and clean up afterwards . I have found that you should rinse the rice a little before starting the cooker up or it will bubble over the side a little leaving a sticky residue to clean up . My son uses this as much as I do and will be getting one for himself when he heads off to college !
    • 016 4  I got this for Xmas and began using it 4 + times a week . The first thing noticed was that it overflowed onto the counter every time rice was cooked in 1 - 2 person sizes . The rice turned out very nice , but after cleaning the unit and counter about 20 times , we decided it would never see rice again . Seems that a rice cooker shouldn't boil over to me . If we wanted that , we'd still be making rice on the stove top in a pan . We have a Zojirushi now . Ok , the Zojirushi , isn't a steamer , so the Cuisinart has become an egg and vegetable steamer . Six refrigerated eggs in the steamer for 23 minutes and they are perfectly hard boiled . For vegetables , just follow the times in the instruction booklet - they turn out very nice . No overflowing either , nice . 2 stars since it isn't is a very messy rice cooker .
    • 018 4  Cons : - Rice gets burnt at the bottom - Water boils over every time unless you are willing to eat high-fat rice by adding a lot of butter or oil to your rice . - The knob of the lid is made of conducting metal and gets extremely hot . So dont try picking it up once the rice is done . - The cooker does not turn off once the rice is done and if you dont manually go turn it off , it continues to heat the rice and burn it ( supposedly keep-warm mode ) - Doesnt cook rice like all the other regular rice cookers I've owned ( Panasonic or other brands ) - Most of the time , the rice is not completely cooked . Pros : - looks good .
    • 022 4  Let's face it : most rice cookers will do their job . Unless you're a rice connoisseur , all rice cookers on this site with more than three stars will probably do the job and do it decently . However , this rice cooker has a few advantages over the others , which is why I ended up purchasing this particular unit . The first is it has an extremely small footprint ; that is to say this rice cooker takes up less space than a gallon of milk placed on the countertop . This leaves vital space for the rest of your cooking , and this cooker can fit in even the most cramped of culinary spaces . Some might see this as a drawback , as the cooker is capped at four cups . If you're making more than four cups of rice per meal routinely , you either have a huge family or entertain frequently ; luckily Cuisinart makes an 8 - cup version of this very cooker , with approximately the same footprint . The second is the vain reason that everyone secretly bought this cooker for : it's damn sexy . For those of you with more modern kitchens which tend to be adorned with stainless steel everywhere , it is a perfect match . For those that aren't , it brings a modern look to any kitchen . If you're looking for a functional appliance that everyone will compliment you on , this is most assuredly the unit for you . I have never had issues with boiling over , but I've never made more than two cups of rice at a time . There is a good chance that it could boil over with larger rice batches , because the bubbles almost reach the lid on the 2 cup amount . I don't like to make more rice than is needed for one sitting , and because this cooks rice quickly , I never feel the need to make larger batches . This small and efficient rice cooker makes perfectly done and fresh rice every time . As said previously , adding a small amount of oil or butter will impede bubble formation , and you will not have issues with boiling over . I have yet to use the steamer , but I'm sure it performs adequately .
    • 024 4  I got one of these great looking , sleek little rice cookers for Xmas and so far it has boiled over and made a mess every single time ! Before you say , you must be putting in too much water , let me assure you I've never had this problem with my trusty , if unsightly , old rice cooker I bought in chinatown . Do I want an appliance for which I have to modify the recipe in order to make it work properly ? No , I don't . Also , the steamer basket is so small as to be fairly useless in this 4 - cup model from Cuisinart . This little guy's beauty is only skin deep .
    • 029 4  The darn thing sputters a mess all over . . . . and this was just from cooking two small ' cups ' of rice . Next time , I'm going for quality ( iow - gettin a zoji ) instead of looks . . . . ugh !
    • 030 4  After purchasing this unit , I too had spill over at very low water rice levels . I realized that this is the same problem one would get , using even medium heat to cook grits , or rice in a regular pot . . . . . . . ( If you leave the top of the pot down tight . ) There is no way , because of the high heat setting of this unit , that the glass lid supplied can be used to completely cover the cooking pot , even though the instruction book indicates so . . The hole would have to be much larger to allow steam to escape . The temperature setting of the heating dictates the designer set it high to allow the use of the steaming attachment , using a high boiling point The steam will push the air mols from the pot causing a very low barometric air pressure . With this the bubbles generated by the boiling rice water will have almost no air pressure to keep them low or at minimum . { they expand greaty ) , Thus foaming out the sides of the pot . Even though I could not find in the instruction that the glass top would not work if it was used to completely cover the cooker top while cooking , the picture on the box was a clue . The picture shows the steamer unit sitting in place , with the glass lid on top . Using the steamer attachment while just cooking rice , I started the unit . A few bubbles and steam came up through the bottom of the steamer , for a while , and than decreased . ( no boil over ) . Once the temperature in the unit exceeded 220 degrees ( all water boiled off ) : the unit went into stand-by . Perfectly cooked rice . Every time I use the steamer unit , even if I not even steaming vegetable or etc . No boil over . It has many holes in it to allow steam excapement with out boil over . Caution . . . . . . . . . . . The steamer tray gets as hot as the steam generated in the cooking process . Do not touch the steamer tray attachment with-out waiting for it to cool , and keep this unit well away from the reach of children , or uncovered , un-protected hands . In this cooling time the laden heat in the left over steam can return to the rice , and complete the cooking cycle .
    • 032 4  I did a ton of research on all rice cookers out there , on / off and fuzzy logic , and then every brand and type within that category . This is why I settled on the Cuisinart after all the research , and despite the so-so reviews : - - I wanted something with a small footprint . I live in a NYC apt and cook only for myself , my baby , and sometimes a meal for 2 w my boyfriend . I wanted a 3 or 4 cup cooker . - - I wanted a steamer . • 035 4  I recently purchased this rice cooker to replace an older one that I had grown tired of having to soak overnight just to clean out ( plus I felt I was wasting a lot of stuck rice ) . The Cuisinart looks fantastic on my counter , and takes up even less space than my old 3 - cup cooker . Cleanup is a breeze as promised . I haven't had any boil-over problems yet , although I've only cooked 1 - cup servings so far . My only complaints are that the lid handle gets hot after cooking ( my old cooker had a plastic handle rather than metal , so it stayed cool ) , and the retractable cord can be stubborn to rewind sometimes . Overall though I'm very pleased with this stylish little appliance !
    • 037 4  I received this 4 - cup rice cooker from my husband as a christmas gift . I am a total foodie who loves to cook and watch cooking shows . Boy did my husband pick the right gift for me this year . He knows how much I love my kitchen gadgets and when he found this , he said he had to buy it because he was convinced I would love this product . He definately hit it big this time . I have watched many , many kitchen shows and cooking programs and I never could understand why anyone would buy or even want a rice cooker . Now I understand . I am very perplexed by all the negative reviews I have read about this rice cooker . Every time I have used it , my rice has been absolutely perfect . So much so , that my 2 year old will eat a whole bowl of rice himself . I don't do anything special to my rice at all . All I do is put in 1 cup of jasmine rice to 2 cups of water . I add in about 2 Tbsp of margerine and some season salt and away it goes . By the time my meat is done cooking , so is my rice . I have never had a problem with the machine spilling over or my rice not cooked correctly . If anyone out there is being swayed by the negative comments , IGNORE THEM ! ! ! ! I recommend this product to anyone and everyone who like to eat perfectly cooked rice . How cool is it that you can just start your rice and walk away and presto , in a short time you have perfect rice . Everyone , enjoy your rice cooker . My only after thought is that I needed to buy more rice . I find my family wanting it more and more .
    • 038 4  This is great looking and well built little rice cooker ; perfect for my family of three . For those who experienced boil over you need to include a small amount of fat into the rice such as butter ( my preference ) or oil . It makes a big difference and should stop the problem . Also , if you are using anything other than enriched rice be sure to rinse it well in cold water first .
    • 041 4  I don't think I had the boil-over problem when I first got this a year ago . But now , water boils over the lid and out the hole and all over the counter , and it seems that it's heating way too fast . The rice sticks to the bottom if I don't stir it up immediately after it switches off ( to warm ) . I hate this rice cooker now , and I'll look for another . My biggest regret ( other than wasted money ) is putting something this new into the trash . I think quality must vary item to item or must decline over time ( like mine ) because the positive reviews look so good . But believe me , you don't want this mess on your counter .
    • 049 4  We bought this cooker from Linen N ' things . And after using it for about 6 months . It's already broken . Even if it's not broken , I won't recommend it , - - rice may be under-cooked , overflow problem . And we got perfect rice once in a while only . And strangely , the amount of rice , water that we used are the same all the time . Good luck with those who got it .
    • 051 4  My Cuisinart rice cooker gets the job done . 4 cups is perfect for my fiance and I . The fact that I can steam veggies on top - genius . I wish I had this when I was in college instead of one of those hot pot gadgets . Some tips - * This is 4 cups of cooked rice and 4 cups is what works best . * The instructions say 4 - 7 cups of rice ( again , cooked ) , stick w / 4 to avoid some of the overflowing neg reviews posted . * 4 cups doesn't seem like much ? Check yourself before you wreck yourself . * 1 cup per person is plenty of rice for a serving size . That's 4 servings , great for a family . * keep all metal objects away from interior non-stick bowl . * wooden spoons work great with this and look great in your kitchen .
    • 053 4  It cooks the rice . Otherwise , I'm not so happy . 1 ) It tends to boil over ( adding oil or butter helps - - but so would good design ) . 2 ) It scorches when I use stock instead of water . 3 ) You have to be there to unplug it , there's no auto-shutoff , although it will go into permanent warming mode . 4 ) You have to load it before plugging it in , otherwise it goes right into warming mode . 5 ) The cooking directions are wrong ( what ? it's a rice cooker ) - - use the directions on the rice , not in the book . 6 ) The lid doesn't fit . Not on the pot , and not on the steamer . 7 ) The cool extra steamer gadget overcooks everything - - other than rice So go with the Zojirushi systems - - they're made by pros .
    • 054 4  We bought this product thinking all rice cookers produced the same results . Unfortunately , this couldn't be further from the truth . The product does cook rice but the boil-over produces a mess that requires 30 minutes of cleaning time . This boil-over happens every time you cook and not just rice . Cooking oatmeal produces the same mess . The steam-cook system that sits on top didn't seem to produce the results stated by Cuisinart either . Not all the vegetables cooked and we ended up cooking them separately . We ended up having to buy another product that did the job we needed . We spent half the money and got a better product on eBay made by Ikeda .
    • 059 4  It's great for making rice and congee . Plus it comes with a steamer basket ( good for heating up frozen steamed buns ) , a rice paddle , a retractable cord , and it looks good . What else could you want ? After a year or so , not a single problem .
    • 062 4  It looks nice , but whoever built this didn't expect it to be used . As mentioned in other reviews , the water boils over if you don't add butter or oil . What this really means is that you will have rice-water spattering everything nearby , even if you're only cooking one cup of rice . The lid seems mismatched to the bowl . It doesn't quite sit right , so you have steam escaping out one side as well as out of the steam hole . The knob on top of the lid gets pretty hot , so you have to have a hot pad to open it . There's nowhere to put the rice paddle . Most rice cookers have a place to put the scoop . ( You're supposed to fluff the rice a few minutes after it finishes cooking ; it's nice to be able to put the paddle somewhere other than the counter top . ) Due to the shape of the lid , you can't even set it on top . It looks nice , and it cooks rice , but the design is terrible . Buy something else .
    • 063 4  I have never used a rice cooker before and this one is pretty easy . I think the hardest part is tweeking the rice / water ratio . I did also have boil over problems , but after adding a small amount of butter in the beginning that has seemed to stop . Since I've never used one before I can't say if this one is good or bad . I just use it for two people and it works fine for us . I've used short and long white and long brown rice . I rinse some of my rices too , which the instructions suggest for imported rice . The steaming option is definitely a bonus .
    • 069 4  I love using the rice cooker . The rice turns out perfect every time . However , no matter which recipe I use , it over flows onto the counter . The shape is great , the squareness of it makes it easy to store . I still use it all the time , I just make sure that there isn't anything near it when it cooks . The only other complaint I have is that there is not an off switch , you have to unplug it after every use . Maybe they are all like that , I do not know , this is the only one I have ever used . I love the retractable cord ! ! ! Rice is perfectly cooked and appliance is easy to store . Too bad it makes such a mess , I expected more from Cuisinart .
    • 075 4  This is a dangerous counter top appliance due to the steam spewing out of the lid . I don't have children at home or I would not use it . All I want to do is cook brown rice every day , and it is more trouble then its worth . I wrote one letter to Cuisinart , but the company has not responded to my complaints . I do not recommed this product because it is faulty design .
    • 076 4  This was my first rice cooker , and I've used it a lot since buying it . It's fast , convenient , looks nice and clean up is pretty easy . I used the steamer for a chicken dish , and that turned out great . I have two problems with it : 1 ) water leaks out the top and runs down the side of the cooker almost every time . You need to put a lot of butter in it to keep this from happening . The rice tastes great if you do this , but it's probably not very healthy , and 2 ) a portion of the rice is almost always crispy . I think the rice at the bottom of the cooker gets burnt , although it doesn't appear burnt . All I know is that no matter how much water I add , I still get crunchy rice . My boyfriend likes it that way , so it doesn't bother him , but it drives me crazy .
    • 078 4  I was very excited when I bought this rice cooker from Bed , Bath and Beyond . I loved the stainless , boxy look because it went well with my kitchen . But lovely as it was , it could not cook rice . I tried several ways to cook rice - - I followed the instructions on the manual , used a technique taught by my mom , cooked for a longer period . . each time rice was always undercooked . My last experiment was to cook the rice with way more water than instructed . This time the rice was perfect but my countertop was a mess . Boiled rice liquid overflowed and leaked all over the sides of the cooker and onto my counter . Needless to say , I'm done with giving this rice cooker a chance . I'm returning it tomorrow .
    • 082 4  We saw this rice cooker in a local store while browsing for a new set of pots and pans ( we were not really in the market for a rice cooker ) . I read the reviews here before buying it , and did some addtional research . There is only two of us , so a small maching is really suitable , and the steaming feature was a nice extra . We have now used it a couple of times , and I am VERY happy with it . It cooks perfect rice , nice and fluffy , no sticking and no boiling over . I can only conclude that people don't follow directions and change amounts of rice and water . The cooker actually provides the most important thing in cooking : consistent and even heat . I even sauteed some vegetables in it before adding rice and water , and it produced fluffy and perfectly cooked pilaf . If you are in the market for a small rice cooker , this is the one to get . Don't let the negative reviews keep you away from it - - people did not know what they were doing . The positive reviews already addressed all the issues , and they are right ! The steaming feature also works great , no problems with it . All in all , a great machine - - looks good , great value , small foot print - - and perfect , yummy rice every time .
    • 083 4  We have several other Cuisinart products and have been very happy with the quality but this Rice Cooker was clearly designed exclusively for beauty and not for cooking rice . The product creates a substantial mess when cooking rice , we have been forced to use it in the sink . Clean up takes approximately 20 minutes - possibly more . The product also results in less than perfect rice with occasional browning on the bottom . I would not recommend this product .
    • 086 4  I'm not big on how pretty a piece of kitchen appliance is ( I'm a man ! LOL ) , but it's a really good looking thing . Cleaning is also a breeze , a huge plus . It's small and the perfect size for the capacity of rice it cooks . It's also sturdy compared to other 4 - cuppers I've seen and handled at the stores . Very well made , in my opinion . I have not had any overflowing issues . I wonder what other people are doing wrong ( other than using too much rice and water ) . . . I switched from medium grain to long grain jasmine rice and I can assure you , ONE cup of raw rice is plenty for one or two people . I dislike wet and gloppy rice so I just made sure I experimented with the rice-to-water ratio until the thing turned out the rice as I like it . The first couple of tries the rice was wetter ( stickier ? ) than I liked , but no problem , I just fried it with some chopped onions , salt , pepper , and some eggs . Delicious ! I have not tried the steamer feature , but I'm glad it's an option . I'm definitely happy with this rice cooker and would highly recommend it to people who don't need anything more than 1 - 3 ( or 4 ) cups of cooked rice at a time .
    • 089 4  I decided I wanted a rice cooker after reading a blog entry by the film critic Roger Ebert , in which he describes the many and varied ways to use a rice cooker ; basically to cook almost anything with convenience . After reading many of the negative comments about rice cookers here on Amazon , I was wary of how well it would work , but I have to say it performs perfectly , even for brown rice . It even seems to cook a little faster than using the stove ( at the very least it doesn't take any longer ) . The rice also tastes just fine . The steamer basket works great for vegetables , as well - no problems there . The book comes with a bunch of varied recipes and its obvious that you can experiment with these once you get the hang of it . Unfortunately , there are no listed cooking times / ratios for grains like quinoa , millet and amaranth or how to make soups / stews which would have been nice . The cooker does produce a bit of steam but it's not as bad as what I've read about some other brands ( this one doesn't splatter water all over the counter , thankfully ) . One minor complaint , though , is that the cover doesn't fit snugly over the pot by itself ; no matter how you adjust it there is a small gap on one side . Placing the steamer basket in solves this , but it doesn't seem to adversely effect cooking either way , so it's not a big deal . Anyway , I'm very pleased with the cooker so far and would definitely recommend it .
    • 094 4  We have had 3 other rice cookers . They were of low quality and it showed . We looked high and low for a nice small cooker - there is 2 of us now - so the 6 or 10 cup ones were large . I found this and bought this for my better half and she loves it ! It is a brag item . Visitors to the kitchen get to see it if they are new . We use it to steam and to cook rice . It is well made and the Roll up cord is Great ! Martin
    • 100 4  Used this 3 times . My wife and I can't seem to make rice well in a pot ! So we got one of these , that looks beautiful in our modernist kitchen , and functions extremely well . I'd recommend one of these to anyone . Creates just enough rice for 3 - 4 people , or 5 people if you go light on rice .
    • 115 4  I have heard alot regarding rice cookers ; consistently cooking rice just right . Cuisinart has a hit and miss reputation on some of its products , in this case , it is a absolute hit ! Pricing was excellent , aesthetics great , size perfect . Very pleased with Amazon's service and quality of its merchandise . As much as I hate to admit it , I am becoming a very loyal Amazon customer ! Best , Emmanuel Lorenzana
    • 116 4  I've been paying for getting this rice cooker ever since I threw away my husband's $10 rice cooker from the Chinese market . It under cooks the rice even if you put in extra liquid . It makes a huge mess , boiling up and over the lid and splattering liquid all over the place . It's a pain to clean off all the cooked on mess that has boiled over the sides and into the crevasse in the lid . It's a huge waste of money . I wish I could get the cheap one I threw away back !
    • 118 4  This cooker has reduced rice and other grain cooking to the essentials . The unit power is controlled by plugging and unplugging the device at the wall . If you leave it plugged ( on warm ) in for a long time after the rice cooks it will eventually dry the rice completely . Follow the ratios of water to grain recommended in the accompanying booklet , not on the grain packages . I've successfully cooked rice , grits and oatmeal . Haven't tried cream of wheat yet . The steamer basket placed over the cooking rice turns out veggies that are perfectly steamed when cooking a couple of servings of rice . However , if cooking a larger batch of rice , I suspect the veggies would be overcooked .
    • 119 4  I purchased this item after reading more negative than positive reviews . I have to admit I agree with the negatives , this is a very messy countertop kitchen appliance . I used it one time and that was enough . I placed the cooker on my kitchen island , added one cup of uncooked rice and 2 cups of water , as per the manufacturers instructions . There was so much condensation and liquid starch everywhere , it was just pouring down the sides of the base of the unit . It was so much I would consider it a hazard . The rice did cook however and was slightly sticky the taste was no different than using a saucepan with a lid . The warm feature that automatically kicks in when the rice is cooked , kept it very warm . There is a steam basket with this model that is a nice feature , however how does it work if you have starchy liquids overflowing . I neglected to mention I used a long grain popcorn rice . I returned it and purchased a less expensive brand that I have not used . I think I might be better off sticking to the saucepan method at least I know what to expect .
    • 122 4  Good purchase . These Rice Maker is marvelous and works pretty well , easy to use and clean . As steamer is magnific . The price and the delivery very good .
    • 123 4  Like the cooker , makes great oatmeal . Disappointed with the retractable cord , it doesn't exist
    • 125 4  I have never had a rice cooker before and I am totally impressed with this Cuisinart . It makes perfect rice ( white or brown ) every time I have used the product . It was recommended to me and I would recommend it to anyone looking to improve the texture of rice .
    • 127 4  I did lots of research before buying my first rice cooker , and I'm definitely happy I decided to go with this model . The comments regarding the boiling over issue are definitely accurate , but so far the solutions . Try putting some butter in with your rice , or simply use the steaming basket each time . Problem solved ! Overall , I really love this little gadget . I loved the look and the size is great for countertop storage . I can't say cooking rice on a stove top is the worst thing ever , but its far more convenient to set the rice cooker and go about the rest of my cooking . I simply follow the directions on the rice package itself and voila - perfect rice every time ! I haven't left rice on the warm setting for long , for fear it would dry out . But so far I haven't experienced a bad batch yet ! Cleanup is a breeze . If you're looking for a super fancy rice cooker with fuzzy logic and all the bells and whistles , than this definitely isn't the model for you . But if you're looking for a sleek looking work horse , I would definitely recommend it ! Just be sure to put the steaming basket , even when you're not steaming vegetables .
    • 129 4  Great looking machine and cooks perfect rice every time . If you are experiencing boil over using this machine you are simply putting way too much water . Follow the instructions below for perfectly cook rice : 1 . Place the desired amount of rice ( any kind ) in the container using the included measuring cup . ( You must use the included measuring cup ) 2 . Fill the container with water using the water marker guide located inside the container to the appropriate level . For example , if you put 3 cups of rice in the container fill the container up w / water to the 3 water marker . Following the steps above will produce perfectly cooked rice every time . Hope this helps .
    • 130 4  I bought a substandard rice cooker a few months ago and was bitterly disappointed . Took the plunge again yesterday with this better made , more expensive rice cooker . Read the reviews here and believe the issue is related to boiling over which can be remedied by putting in butter or olive oil in before cooking . Set it up . Put the measurements in and walked away to study . Came back to check on it and what I found was the most perfect rice I've ever made . I reserve space on my counter for only the most elite efficient appliances and this one has earned a spot . It is attractive and well designed . You won't be disappointed . Just read the directions . Update - had it a couple of months now and love it still . Very successful at steaming fish on top of lettuce leaves .
    • 135 4  After researching rice cookers ( there are many ) and learning just how they work ( I purchased this model . This product is everything I expected and even more . For the price of 49 dollars this rice cooker is a great value producing perfect rice every time . I have made rice of all kinds in this cooker . Long grain , brown , Basmati , Jasmine and even the Royal Blend rices . I have steamed vegetables , and a bonus , this cooker makes great oatmeal , including absolutely delicious steel cut ( Irish ) oats . When cooking oatmeal one reviewer suggested not putting the lid on tight and that keeps it from boiling over . It works ! ! We use this cooker almost daily and it is easy to clean . When done you retract the cord and just put it away . I suppose I could say it doesn't do this or that but I knew its limitations before I purchased it . Therefore this review is based on what I knew I was getting . Bottom line is if you want to spend 200 dollars on a rice cooker go ahead but I am more than satisfied with this 49 dollar purchase .
    • 138 4  I bought one for my wife and myself . I bought one for one bachelor son then the other . Then when my son melted the cord and rear of his in a kitchen accident I bought another as a replacement . How much better recommendation can their be than that . We love the steamer basket and not only do vegetables but we also heat up left over meat and burgers in it although they are only in there about half the cycle . The health nut son has found that rice can be done without any fats if the top is left off until just the last few minutes .
    • 141 4  I just got this and used it once so far . It's easy to use and when it cooked the Jasmine rice , the aroma filled my house and smelled great . The rice came out better than when I used to boil mine . I have not used the steamer yet as it seemed more complicated and I already have a dedicated steamer . Few gripes : 1 . It would be nice for some sort of alarm or ding when the rice is ready . All it does now is that the cook light switches to the warm light , but you would not know unless you monitor the unit . 2 . There is no timer either . The manual provides steaming times for foods , but with no timer , you have to either watch the clock or using something else . My dedicated steamer has a timer and dings when done . Very useful . 3 . If you try to combine cooking rice and steaming veggies , it's confusing . Since you don't know where in the cooking cycle the rice is , it's hard to estimate when to add the veggies to the steamer . For example , it says to cook broccoli for 13 minutes . So I would like to add the broccoli to the steamer when the rice has 13 minutes left of cooking since the warm setting will not steam . But how do I know when there is 13 minutes left on the rice ? I don't with no timer or status gauge . I'm afraid it will take trial and error to figure out this . Ugh .
    • 150 4  Read the majority of the review before I purchased my rice cooker . Yes it came in a bit soiled but that is why I have soap and water near my sink and there were a few cosmetic scratches from the previous owners attempt at cleaning with the wrong product . I only gave it 4 stars because of the rather conspicuous scratch marks on the front of the unit . The bottom line is the cooker works great , no it works absolutely great . I took the time to accurately measure both my rice and water as suggested in the owners manual and in no way did it come out mushy , wet or otherwise inedible . If anything because I am over a mile above sea level could have used a tad bit more water to compensate for the cooking temperature difference of the boiling water . I was able to steam up a batch shrimp and a bunch of batches veggies with great results . In my opinion I got a great bang for my buck and am happy as a skunk in a pea patch . After all re-conditioned is not cosmetically like new but works like new .
    • 151 4  Cooked great rice . This product was easy to use , and a pleasure . I don't have a lot of kitchen gadgets , but this one is worth the money . I liked that you could keep the rice warm indefinately .
    • 152 4  I was very excited to see this snazzy looking stainless steele box shaped design and was looking forward to replacing my old simple rice steamer with this model until I realized some problems and decided to return it and stick to my tried and true clunky machine . Firstly , any rice pot would be very hot at the end of a cooking cycle and I can see awkward problems lifting it out with oven mitts unless you'd like to lug the entire unit and still have problems stabilizing the cook pot within in order to scoop out the rice . Secondly , the steamer basket is almost too small for practical use with this size cooker and although it's packs nicely into the unit for storage there are no handles on the sides for easy lifting . You'd have to use both mitt covered hands to remove it . Thirdly , as nice as stainlesss steele base unit looks is you are constanly chasing after fingerprints . Fourthly I simply don't believe any non stick pot can tolerate the dishwasher as they recommend to clean the cook pot . There is no non-stick product today that can tolerate that kind of abuse for long . Cookes rice sticks like cryptonite even in a non-stick pot and you usually have to soak before hand scrubbing . Why bother with a dishwasher ? Fifthly the retractable cord although nice probably won't last in terms of it's mechanism . I have yet to see a reliable retractable mechanism , have you ? I think I'll wait until I see a better designed product and not simply buy into style .
    • 154 4  Bought as a gift and the receipient like the product , however felt the 4 - cup is deceiving . Nevertheless , it goes very well with their new kitchen and it is good enough to cook rice for two people .
    • 157 4  We use this rice cooker ALL of the time . But 3 times now , we've forgotten to put the liner back in the rice cooker , and have gone ahead and poured the rice and water in the cooker without the bowl . No biggy , you would think , except that when you do that , the rice ( and water , in my husband's case ) get in the engine , and are near impossible to get out . I've taken it apart , and the fiberglass insulation has began molding and is impossible to clean out . What is otherwise a fantastic item has a small glitch for people that are in a rush to cook and sometimes slip up on having everything in place . If you're super thorough , great !

  • 003 4  I recently purchased this rice cooker for my small kitchen . Its compact cubic shape will take very little room on your counter , and as an extra plus , its brushed metal look is very attractive . Note that although the body of the cooker itself gets a bit warm , the rim of the pot and the lid get very hot , as the liquid from the cooking food will boil up and come out at the seams , which is okay because the pot and lid are easy to clean . . . but I wouldn't recommend this product if you have kids , or if you don't have a place to put it outside of a child's reach . The cooker also comes with a little recipe book and some rice-to-water proportions for various types of rice , which is very helpful when cooking a new kind of rice , and a steaming basket for foods , which stands atop the little pot and steams veggies ( esp . while cooking rice ! ) really well .
    • 002 4  This rice cooker is a great addition to any kitchen . I love the steamer basket addition which allows me to cook additional food items at the same time as my rice . The steamer basket is great for hard and soft boiled eggs . When using this cooker , make sure that you go by the directions on the rice itself , not by the instructions in the manual ( rice to water ratio ) . Also , the rice does have a tendency to boil over . I usually put a little butter in with the rice to prevent this from happening . I'm very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend it .
    • 011 4  I use this rice cooker mostly for brown rice and it is a fiasco . You need to put in 1 / 2 the water that you are supposed to , wait until that is cooked in and then add the other half . Adding all the water up front causes the cooker to boil over - a real mess with rice . It looks OK , but it just isn't the quality item you would expect with the name Cuisinart . The price is also reasonable , so its not the end of the world - it might be better for things that don't require as much water or cook time ( like white rice ) .
    • 019 4  I gave alot of thought to buying this cooker after my old trusty Black and Decker cooker died after 15 + years . It makes a mess , spitting out water . If I reduced the water , it came out dry ( I live a t altidute ) . When steaming one day , the water ran out , and the heating element melted giving off a awful smell . At least it is dead now , and I can try again with a different brand
    • 066 4  Its a great LITTLE cooker , you can cook really only two cups of rice . It does a good job and I like it . The one thing you cannot do that you can do in BIG cookers is come back the next day and have fresh rice . This unit will not allow that . All in all a 5.5 .
    • 068 4  After repeated efforts , my experience has been that rice rarely turns out well with this rice cooker . I have tried to make adjustments to the amount of liquid but the rice is usually undercooked by varying degrees . It is very inconsistent on how long it cooks for a fixed quantity of rice and water , and often burns the rice on the bottom before cooking all the rice . I give up and am looking for a different rice cooker .
    • 074 4  We've had this steamer for 2 years & while it does a nice job of steaming veggies , the rice results are inconsistent . To get the rice cooked seems to require more water than the directions call for . This might be because a lot of steam escapes during the cooking process ( and there's often a watery ' overflow ' onto the counter , too ) . Once the rice is cooked , you need to remove it w / in 10 - 15 min . or you get a brown crust on the bottom ( not burned exactly , but unpleasantly browned ) . I've decided to move up to a higher quality steamer after 2 years of struggling with this one . . .
    • 079 4  I made the mistake of buying this rice cooker about 2 years ago . I looked at other brands but wanted to save money and try this one . Two years later , I wish I had never done it and put the money towards something much better . I am about to give it to Goodwill . It does still work - BUT - it overflows about half of the time ( and I do put oil in as other reviews suggested , which does help some ) . The non-stick coating is really poor and basically is not very non-stick . So now I am back on amazon looking at getting a new rice cooker . I would rather spend more initially at this point , and get something that will last for many years . This does work and does cook rice reasonably , so if you're looking for a bargain I think there are some around on this model .
    • 080 4  It is cute and space saver but I've never been able to cook 4 cups of rice in there because it was overflowing , over time the situation became gradually worst , and now ( after around 2 years of use 5 times a week ) it is overflowing even with 1.5 cup of rice . . .
    • 095 4  I really like it , it cooks rice so quickly . I love that I can steam veggies too .
    • 101 4  It cooks fast and is easy to store . Only problem , fingerprints . Overall , great buy .
    • 104 4  We have used this three times so far on different types of rice . It has turned out perfectly each time , following the instructions to add a small amount of oil to prevent sticking . We particularly like its neat compact size on the countertop , to fit in with the toaster oven and other kitchen clutter . So far , would recommend this highly for those who want smaller portions of rice ( up to 8 cups cooked ) . We are a three-person family , and this makes more than enough for two meals for us . We haven't used the veggie steamer yet , but its inclusion was another reason for buying this model .
    • 111 4  I loved it ! its the perfect size , and cooks rice perfectly , its easy to use and also really pretty , Im very happy with my purchase
    • 120 4  This little cutie is the cutest rice cooker i have seen , but sadly it lasted the shortest . i could cook white rice and wild rice ( purple korean rice ) in it just fine , but one day it stopped cooking rice and started staying on keep warm mode at all times . * sadness *
    • 131 4  This little cooker does exactly what it is supposed to do . . . cook rice . It is compact , consistent and well built . I have cooked brown rice , white rice and even Uncle Ben's Rice Pilaf box dishes with excellent results . As long as you accurately measure the rice and water you will be fine .
    • 145 4  Being a daily ' rice maker ' I wanted a rice cooker I could keep on the counter top . While it looks sharp on the counter , this rice cooker boils over when cooking - even if only making one cup . I have discovered the problem is with the lid which allows boil over . I simply used my old rice cooker lid and problem solved ! For aesthetics , I switched the top knob so that it matched . Also the existing lid is difficult to clean as it has a small lip underneath that can only be cleaned out with a toothpick . . . Rice cookers are simple devices , just boiling water for x amount of minutes . . . So overall looks great , works fine , but needs a different lid !
    • 148 4  The rice cooker is exactly what you would expect from Cuisinart . . . perfect . . . everytime . Would definitely recommend to all rice lovers . . . especially for cooking difficult brown rice .

  • 005 4  I tried another rice cooker first ( Aroma brand ) . It failed to make even decent rice . I found this one on sale and grabbed it after the good reviews I had read here . ( 2009 - still works and looks great ! ) True , you need to add a little oil or I butter to help with the boil over , but I like to do that anyway . I use a little Mazzola extra virgin olive oil spray . Works like a charm . Also make cleanup even easier . I use Jasmine rice . I gently rinse the rice once , spread it evenly in the cooker , use cold filtered water and let it stand a few minutes before removing from pot ( all per a Thai friend of mine ) . The first batch was good . The second time I used it I added a tad more water than the cooker instructions said . ( instead of 1 1 / 4 cup I added closer to 1 1 / 2 cup for long grain rice , 2 serving amount . ) The result has been perfect , yummy rice each time since . It's the perfect size for my husband and me . I like the stainless steel exterior . It looks good on my counter , and doesn't take up much space . I've only had it 2 weeks , but so far I'm happy . STILL LOVE THIS COOKER . The retractable cord has become one of my favorite things . I wish all appliances had one . 2 year update . It's still used weekly in my kitchen . We love it for steamed potatoes and carrots . It still looks great on the counter too . Easy clean up and the cord still retracts .
    • 009 4  Well , I am smitten . When this cooked my morning oatmeal without a single splatter , I knew I was in love . Yes , it does oatmeal and much more than just rice - every grain imaginable plus some legumes , then steam veggies on top . What I really love is it's ability to make a one-dish meal : saute pilaf ingredients right in the pot , add rice-press a button and just FORGET ABOUT IT till you're ready to eat ! Nor has it ever burned my food . I wonder if those bad reviewers even gave this product a test drive ( and followed directions ? ) Stick to recommended portions , or smaller-great recipe booklet included . I definitely believe it's a good investment , easy to clean ( I hand wash though as I don't have a dishwasher ) Oh , it's cute too , but the functionality will win you over .
    • 034 4  We bought this rice cooker for the same reason everyone else did - - the look - - and we had the same messy boil-over problem that you all had , too . Plus , even though we always followed the cooker's directions , rice cooked up inconsistently : Sometimes it was underdone , sometimes it was burnt . We tried different types of rice , tried using the included smaller-than-one-cup measuring cup , tried adding butter . . . Nothing helped until we discovered the secret : Always add water according to the directions on the rice package rather than the cooker's directions , and ALWAYS COOK RICE WITH THE STEAMING BASKET IN PLACE . When I say in place , I mean as though you're steaming vegetables in it : perforated end down , open end up ( the Cuisinart logo stamped on the side of the basket should be right-side-up ) . See , the glass lid doesn't fit on the nonstick cooking bowl , but the steaming basket does . . . And the lid fits the steaming basket perfectly . You'll have no boil-over EVER with that arrangement , and if you use exactly as much water as the rice package indicates ( and never lift the lid or stir the rice while cooking ) , your rice will end up perfectly cooked , too .
    • 039 4  This thing is GREAT . I love it . It does only cook 4 cups ( as advertised ) but it is FAST and easy . Witht the flip over lid , you can steam veggies and stuff . I guess I didn't read about that feature , but it is great . After opening it , I drop the glass lid and broke it . I called cuisinart and they shipped me a new lid , AT NO CHARGE . How cool is that ? This is one of the best things in my kitchen .
    • 058 4  This product should serve as nothing more than a stainless steel paperweight . After having my trusty ( if battered and aged ) old rice cooker replaced by this contraption after my wedding , it quickly became apparent that Cuisinart has no idea how to manufacture a quality rice cooker . The product produced a gelatinous goo that bubbled through the steam escape , and even pushed the glass lid ajar . I took to using a piece of tinfoil as the lid , so I could best manage the steam release . My problems are now solved , however - - - the heating element just burned out ; TWO YEARS AFTER WE RECEIVED IT ! ! I'm a Japanese-American , and grew up eating and cooking rice . Trust me : stay with the Japanese brands ! !
    • 061 4  I OWN 3 DIFFERENT BRAND RICE COOKER . THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE THAT I PURCHASED ON JANUARY 2005 AND HAS BEEN USING THIS ONE SINCE THEN . ( BEAUTIFUL COUNTER DISPLAY AND THE FASTEST RICE COOKER ) I LOVE IT ! 4 OF MY FRIENDS BOUGHT THE SAME ONE AFTER THEY SAW MINE .
    • 077 4  This is the worst rice cooker I've ever used ! I'm Asian , so I know what a good cooked rice should be like . This rice cooker does not cook ! ! Rice always come out undercook . I tried following the direction in the manual , tried different ratios of rice vs water , followed instruction in the rice package , tried different type of rice . IT ALWAYS UNDERCOOKED ! You're better off buying a non-branded rice cooker from your chinese supermarket or store .
    • 096 4  Thirty years ago I purchased a basic Japanese made rice cooker . It was wonderful , made perfect rice year after year after year . A few years ago I moved to Costa Rica and one of my most trusted appliances came with me . . . the now old rice cooker . It continued to work here until it just burned out and died . I went looking for a new rice cooker . I liked the the look of the over priced Cuisinart rice cooker so what the heck , a rice cooker is a rice cooker and why not get one that looks good ! I took the hook and purchased the Cuisinart over priced rice cook . WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK ! AND TO THINK , THEY HAVE THE NERVE TO PUT THEIR NAME ON IT . BOILS OVER AND NEVER MAKES REALLY NICE FLUFFY RICE . THERE IS NO PRICE LOW ENOUGH THAT SHOULD ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO BUY A CUISINART RICE COOKER . NOW I WOULD BE VERY , VERY CAREFUL TO EVEN CONSIDER ANY CUISINART PRODUCT !
    • 128 4  I've been reading all the reviews and I'm not sure if anyone else has had the problem I have . I've read the operating directions but can't figure out how to turn the cooker on ! It's plugged in and the WARM light automatically comes on . But every time I press the button to switch to COOK , the button pops back up and it turns back to WARM . It will not stay in the COOK position ! Please help if you have any idea what's going on with this rice cooker !

  • 013 4  I am updating this review 1.5 years later . Previously I wrote in this review that I didn't know what the other people were talking about . . . I had not experienced any mess . But we have recently switched rice brands and now I completely agree with all the negative reviews . When we cook Lundberg Organic White Basmati or Lundberg Organic White Jasmine this cooker makes a MESS ! A gelatinous goo flows out of the top , down the sides , and pools on the counter . It takes about 12 paper towels to wipe the cooker clean , then several minutes with a damp sponge to finish cleaning . Oh , it is so gross . It would be easier to cook on the stovetop then to spend the time cleaning this mess . Plus , it gurgles and shoots the goo pretty far , so whatever is nearby needs a bath too ( e.g . , the blender , the bowl of fruit ) . I will not cook this brand anymore , because until this brand , I did not have any mess and was happy with this cooker .
    • 036 4  Hello there I usu . like to read revus b / f buying products but in this case I'm glad i went ahead and purchased the cuisinart 4 - cup rice cooker . It'S AMAZING ! ! Key points 1 ) YES , you must read the 1 page instruction sheet ! ! 2 ) NO , this has never made a mess or boiled over , B / C I used the included rice measure cup . 3 ) Yes , the lid gets hot when cooking so when you open it ues kitchen mittens 4 ) YES , it's sooo easy to clean as long as you don't let the cooked rice sit on the warm setting over 10min . ( as said in manual ) Anyway as a busy professional , this is an attractive , easy to use rice cooker.I'm soo glad I brought it . Thank you

  • 014 4  This rice cooker works wonderfully if you can get by with just one cup of rice . If you use 1.5 cups of rice and add the required three cups of water , the result is quite a mess - - the boiling water spits out of the cooker and sprayes all around your counter top and drips all over the cooker itself . The clean up is quite a chore because the water is quite sticky from the rice . I am returning my 4 cup machine and getting the next size up . It is a beautiful appliance , does a nice job on the rice and I really like the retractable electric cord .
    • 025 4  I like the retractable cord and nonstick pot . It replaced a 10 + year old rice cooker , so it's a huge improvement . So much easier to clean and far more attractive .
    • 043 4  This is one of the worst designed products I have ever used . It is impossible to make rice without it making a huge mess on the countertop . Then , it is very difficult to clean the outside of the thing . I should have kept the cheap one that I replaced ; it was far superior .
    • 045 4  I really wanted to like this as it's small and a good brand but what a mess it makes ! EVERYTHING boils over . If you reduce the measurements , it burns . It works well as a steamer for a small amount of food , but that's not why I bought it . Will look for a better model .
    • 073 4  I have owned this for over two years . I hate it . It is messy , hot and often burns the rice . It overflows and leaves scum all around. If thats not enough you can get burned easily using it .
    • 109 4  I have had several different rice cookers over the years - this is by far the very best one I have EVER used . It is fast and the rice is fabulous . Thanks again Cuisinart !

  • 020 4  I purchased this for my daughter because she has a stainless steel Cuisinart coffee pot and I thought it would look nice . It not only looks beautiful , it works great . She made brown rice in it and it came out perfect . Many of her friends have commented on how unique it is because of the square shape and stainless steel finish . This rice cooker was a bargain .
    • 015 4  I ended up returning this because every time I tried it with brown rice it burned the rice . I even tried doubling the recommended water amt . for brown rice and it still burned .
    • 033 4  Makes a massive mess every time I use it . Burns brown rice . Sad disappointment .
    • 126 4  I purchased this after seeing it at Christmas when a family member received one . This is an outstanding product . I find myself using it almost daily for something.highly recommended
    • 132 4  I love this rice maker and steamer . Each time I have used this product I enjoy it more and more . Cusinart products have never disappointed me . Great price from amazon as well .
    • 134 4  The rice cooker is smaller than I had pictured it when I placed the order yet we are satisfied with the results it has given us . It may be a bit slower than my last cooker but still faster and more convenient than stove top cooking and tender moist rice is always the result !
    • 143 4  This rice cooker is a bit messy on 3 - 4 cup end . A lot of spewing and overflowing , however , being stainless it easy to clean . Also , you have to play with the recipes a bit , usually more water is needed . I do like the spring retrieval on the power cord . More appliances need these .
    • 156 4  I like that I can steam vegatables in the cocker while the rise is cooking . Keeps rice warm , but sets is set more than a day . It gets hard and burt .

  • 071 4  Like many others , steaming rice in one of these contraptions is a waste of time . We thought perhaps we were missing a gasket , given the mess that was on our counter after each use . And reducing the water made the rice come out crunchy . So , we're chalking it up to a bad purchase and returning to our tried and true pyrex casserole dish in the microwave . That always worked just fine .

    • 081 4  i have purchased 5 cheap rice cookers until this one . It is the only one that did not break within 1 year , still holding my breath , since it has not reached its first anniversary . DO NOT waste your money on Aroma , Black & Decker or Salton - - - all a waste of my money .
      • 088 4  It cooks rice perfectly every time - you just have to remember to unplug it , because it does not have an off switch . * * * If you don't think you'll remember to unplug the device , DON'T buy this product since it could pose a fire hazard .
      • 093 4  This is a great time saver . I can steam veggies , tamales or cook rice . The best part is it keeps your food warm until you're ready to serve .
      • 124 4  I use this rice cooker every day to fix my oatmeal breakfast and it performs perfectly

    • 087 4  I ordered this rice cooker to be shipped to my sister , so I never actually saw or used it . The shipping was prompt and my sister loves it . Says it works perfectly and looks great on her kitchen counter . Other reviews said the rice to water ratios that came with the cooker were wrong , so I gave my sister my husband's ratio of 1 cup rice and 1 1 / 2 cups water . She said this ratio worked fine .
      • 023 4  This rice cooker never did brown rice well ; it never cooked completely . It was temperamental in terms of the amount of water it required . It only lasted about a year before a spring loaded mechanism on the bottom failed , rendering the cooker unusable . It is in the garbage now , where it belongs .
      • 048 4  does not make a lot of food . If you plan to make rice and vegetables for more then two people - forget it . Otherwise a great machine and looks very stylish and looks good anywhere in the kitchen . It is small too !
      • 133 4  The product looks nice but It should have a pressure released valve on the cap rather than a hole and the cap has not sealed well .
      • 155 4  This is a great product . It was given as a give and the family that got it love it .

    • 097 4  The first thing that happened after only a few uses , is I dropped the lid . . . by some miracle the glass didn't shatter , but , it may as well have since the handle broke apart and was unfixable . I went to the hardware store and make-shifted a handle so that I could continue to use it . After maybe another 10 times of use the push down button to start it began to pop away from the frame of the body . I continued to push it back in , wires and all , for about another 10 uses or so , before having to break down and throw it away . Don't waste your money or the resources .
      • 091 4  Hands down the most stylish and useful little rice cooker on the market . We use it almost daily . With jasmine rice from Thailand and a 1 : 2 ratio , there has been no mess . When we first got this or if my spouse first used it , it would boil over . Right now we could not be happier with it , Stainless steel was the draw , the performance made it a keeper .

    • 102 4  My husband bought this for me as a gift . I specifically asked for cuisinart because most of their products are high quality but not this one . The handle broke off of the lid after the second use . My husband blamed me , as though I had not been carefull enough with it but he soon realized after several uses that this is just a piece of garbage appliance . I had to look at all the other reviews on Amazon to make sure it wasnt just mine and low and behold everyone else is having the same problems . When you cook rice in this it overflows everywhere . Slimy sticky rice water overflows all over the counter and continues to pour out until it switches to warm . The more I use it the worse it gets each time . Im throwing mine away . I have a cuisinart food processor and I cant believe its made by the same company . I love love love my food processor but this rice cooker is junk !
      • 017 4  what a treat ! rice , add water and push the button . walk away and when you come back it's done and sitting on warm . Last night I used the steamer and my broccoli came out perfectly and all in one pot ! Would be great for college students too .
      • 026 4  Although only 4 cup it suits my husband and I fine . I had a problem with overflow but in reading reviews found the solution . Add a pat of butter or a spray of Pam and that takes care of the overflow problem . Handy for steel cut oatmeal too . Would recommend this product and would buy it again .
      • 042 4  A messy device . The lid fits poorly on the pot , better on the steamer accessory . Boilover is a problem , even with a partial load . Hard to handle the steamer / lid to add to pot or to steamer . Steamer construction traps particles in the bead of the steamer , difficult to clean . I can make good food with it , but for the price , I can do as well with my Lodge stovetop dutch oven , with much less mess .
      • 044 4  Most Cuisinart products are really good . This one is really bad . First , there's a little vent hole in the lid that's supposed to let off steam but steam and liquid consistently bubble over from the edges of the lid making a mess to clean up . Second , the unit doesn't go from cook to warm soon enough so it burns the rice . Finally , their instructions are overly complicated and don't cook rice properly . I'm now shopping for another rice cooker . What more can I say ? !
      • 060 4  My husband bought this because it looked great but right off the bat we could tell it was form over function . The rice boils over and makes a mess . The lid design is terrible , it has a lip that is difficult to clean . The rim of the knob on top is metal and gets hot during cooking . The non-stick coating of the pot does not hold up very well . We ended up returning it to the store we purchased it from , they don't even carry it anymore . There are much better rice cookers out there , I would steer clear of this one .
      • 067 4  If you follow the instructions you will have a pool of very difficult to clean starch water all over your counter top and cooker . When I contacted Cuisinart about this I was basically told to get lost . Beware ; this is a defective product !

    • 136 4  This is a well designed , attractive unit to use as an extra , helpful kitchen appliance . It's particularly good for steaming a single portion of vegetables . For rice is only so-so , not much better than just doing it the old fashion way on the stove . In my first experience carefully following the instructions and measurements , the water / rice mixture overflowed and made a mess well down inside the unit . The instructions emphasize to always point the steam exhaust toward the back . Now I know why , it will spit all over you and your kitchen floor if you don't .
      • 056 4  Not a good choice-must be watched to make sure it doesn't boil over , didn't switch to warm automatically & burns . Spend a little more $ $ and get a programmable unit if you cook rice often .
      • 070 4  Some design flaws such as no handles on the interior cooking pot . The lid does not fit tightly over top of pot . Have to take lid off for a few minutes until the water cooks down to point where won't boil over when cooking rice . I like that the steamer bowl is stainless steel and not plastic . Easy to clean and store with retractable cord . Overall a pretty good product , but a little over priced .
      • 092 4  Wow , what a fantastic rice cooker ! I am extremely impressed by this unit . It doesn't burn the rice . It has a handy retractable power cord in the back . It has an easy push lever for initiating the cooking process , and it pops up when it's done ; leaving it in a warming state until you turn it off . I've never had such great results from a rice cooker like I do with this one ! Highly recommended ! ! ! !
      • 107 4  This is poorly designed and messy . It doesn't cook even a quarter cup of rice without steaming over the sides and when it shuts off to warm there is a strong residue of cooked rice liquid on the bottom that results in a fair amount of lost food . I find it a pain in the neck and am looking for a decent closed environment for rice cooking . That seems to make sense to me . And they can be had for just a tad more .

    • 142 4  I bought this in October , 2004 because I wanted something small for my kitchen . You cannot cook over 2 cups of rice without it spurting out all over the cooker . Now , it shuts off mid-way and I have to wait for it to cool down and try to reset it . Hopefully the powers that be will read these comments and make improvements .
      • 055 4  water spilled out every time , followed directions and measured carefully . Surprised that it wasn't better considering the brand .
      • 137 4  I had my doubts , but this thing puts out perfect rice . Period . The instructions are so incredibly simple . Measure rice , measure water , flick switch . Did a beautiful job on long grain white rice . Can't wait to try it with basmati .

    • Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) I did a ton of research on all rice cookers out there , on / off and fuzzy logic , and then every brand and type within that category .
      • 006 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) I am amazed that people are having problems with this product .
      • 012 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) I am updating this review 1.5 years later .
      • 021 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) Let's face it : most rice cookers will do their job .
      • 028 4  Bought one recently from a Mervyns sale . Rice burned especially at the bottom ( black & crunchy ) . So I returned and got another one in case the 1st one was defective . Nope , did the same thing . So next go around , I added more water , but still the rice tasted funny - a burned taste - although the rice didn't burn as much this time . For the cost and design , I was hoping this would be a great rice cooker . Design element is cool especially wiith the retractable cord , however , this cooker can't even perfom its main purpose - just plainly cook rice without burning it . Yes , I did add enough water and followed instructions and used the measuring cup . Hopefully they'll improve it . Better yet , maybe Krups can design a better abd sleek-looking yet working rice cooker .

      • 052 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) It cooks the rice .
      • 064 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) I just purchased the Cuisinart CRC - 400 rice cooker . The first try yielded messy results as the top was gurgling during the boiling phase causing starchy water to get all over the unit and the counter . The second time using it I employed the steamer tray and that virtually eliminated the boiling over problem . I would say the rice cooker does what it is supposed to do , but their measurements may be a little low on the water content in some recipes . ( my brown rice came out a little undercooked ) The steamer tray works well and should be used even when not steaming to keep down the mess . 4 cups is really not a lot of rice and I wish I had gone for a larger model . Overall , it looks sleek , but I feel like I could have gotten a unit of the same size and ability with a smaller price tag .

      • 072 4  We finally gave in and replace our very old but reliable Salton RA3A . The handle broke a while ago but we used it many times since it still works although the switch has gotten a bit loose that sometimes it would turn itself off when you thought you turned it on . It was a cheap basic cooker and we never had complaints . It does what it does satisfactorily . We were thinking of buying the Rival from Target which costs only $13 ( hey that's even cheaper than Amazon's next-day shipping ! ) plus it has a warmer , but we were turned off by the red color which is the only color available . So we decided we reward ourselves with something better and can be used as a steamer . When we first saw the Cuisinart CRC - 400 , we thought it has the coolest design , also has nice stainless steel finish with chrome and black accents . Looks perfect for the kitchen and it only costs $50 . Unfortunately , this cooker makes rice a little mushy but that's not our biggest complaint . We thought it's a defective product but after reading some of the reviews here , the design flaw mentioned by many is major and for real . The rice cooker makes a big mess ! The rice water spills over and this is because the lid is not flush . Don't know why they did this on purpose because there is already a hole on the lid to let steam out . I believe Cuisinart QA were sleeping when they were testing this product . They should be fired . It also missed on one functionality , and that is the on / off switch . It's easy to forget to unplug it because we were so used to the old one which turns itself off automatically . We did forget at first use and that can be a fire hazard . Maybe they try to cut cost by omitting this switch . Anyway , you have been warned . I guess the people who gave this higher ratings don't mind the clean up and non-environmentally friendly products . We really want to like the CRC - 400 because it looks perfect in our kitchen but I find it hard to recommend it for its shortcomings . My partner bought this without reading the reviews else I wouldn't have bought it in the first place . We even paid fast-shipping on this so shipping was not free . We've already thrown the old rice cooker away the moment we got this new one . Hopefully , Amazon will give us full credit for the return because we already threw the box away , thinking it will perform flawlessly .
      • 084 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) The rice cooker is good and looks sleek ; but can only cook 2 cups of uncooked rice and can serve only 3 persons at any time . . . . if you are looking to serve more than 3 than this is not the product . . .
      • 099 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) Used this 3 times . My wife and I can't seem to make rice well in a pot ! So we got one of these , that looks beautiful in our modernist kitchen , and functions extremely well . I'd recommend one of these to anyone . Creates just enough rice for 3 - 4 people , or 5 people if you go light on rice .
      • 103 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) We have used this three times so far on different types of rice .
      • 105 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) Halfway decent rice cooker . With larger amounts of rice , it does boil over as stated by other reviews . One thing good is , we only cook 1 - 2 cups of rice at a time , so the boil over is not an issue . The rice turns out good , though you need it to rest for at least 10 min after cooking . Over all , I like this cooker .
      • 108 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) I have had several different rice cookers over the years - this is by far the very best one I have EVER used . It is fast and the rice is fabulous . Thanks again Cuisinart !

      • 114 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) I have heard alot regarding rice cookers ; consistently cooking rice just right .
      • 117 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) This cooker has reduced rice and other grain cooking to the essentials .
      • 121 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) Good purchase . These Rice Maker is marvelous and works pretty well , easy to use and clean . As steamer is magnific . The price and the delivery very good .
      • 140 4  This review is from : Cuisinart CRC - 400 4 - Cup Rice Cooker ( Kitchen ) I just got this and used it once so far . Ugh .
