Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker, White

  • 038 4  I've had this product for a few months now and love it . We use it EVERY MORNING to make steel cut oatmeal-chewy hot and just the right texture . It is a cinch to clean with the non-stick coating . I have cooked beans , rice , and use it to steam veggies often . I used a cheap rice cooker for years . This machine is great for all it does beyond wonderful rice . Worth every penny .
    • 071 4  I GOT THIS RICE COOKER AND IMMEDIATELY MADE SOME RICE AND IT CAME OUT ABSOLUTELY PERFECT . I MADE SOME CHINESE JOOK ( PORRIDGE ) AND IT CAME OUT PERFECT . I USED THE SLOW COOKER TO COOK SOME SPARE RIBS WITH BLACK BEAN SAUCE AND IT CAME OUT TENDER AND PERFECT . THIS COOKER COOKS BETTER THAN ME AND THINKS BETTER THAN ME . . . WHO COULD ASK FOR MORE . VERY HIGH TECH ! !

  • The D55s is at the low end of the spectrum , with fewer features and a thinner bowl . Both the F50S and HC55S occupy the slot above it . Between these two , the HC55S is the newer model . Features unique to it include : the tofu maker , the option to fine-tune rice texture ( soft , regular , firm ) , and a dedicated slow cooker bowl . The HC55S also has low / hi mode for the slow cooking process . However , the older F50S retains one big advantage : Its rice cooker bowl is actually thicker ( 3.5mm vs 3.0mm ) . Thicker bowls are theoretically better at heat distribution . The thicker bowl explains why the F50S has a slightly smaller cooking capacity than the HC55S ( 5.0 cups vs 5.5 cups ) I decided to go with the HC55S , and it definitely exceeds my expectations . There are plenty of great things about this product , but it's not perfect . I only have two complaints , and I will go over those first : 1 . Non-stick bowl is only non-stick for white rice . I've cooked various white rice in this unit ( Sticky Rice , Jasmine White ) and the non-stick feature works as advertised . Very easy to clean . But brown rice is a different matter . I rinse my brown rice throughly 3 - 4 times , soak them for a few hours , before cooking . And every single time , there are little deposits that get encrusted to the bowl . I've used two types of brown rice ( Thai Jasmine Brown , and Mahatma Brown ) with the same results . And the hardened crust is DIFFICULT to clean up with a soft sponge ! Soaking the bowl overnight doesn't help either . I have had to resort to using the rough side of my sponge to lightly scrub the crusts off . This method quickly takes the crusts off . . . but I worry about the long term impact of lightly scrubbing the non-stick bowl . 2 . My only other complaint ? The unit is not designed to cook rice & steam vegetables simultaneously . It's technically possible - - - there's enough room in the bowl for the steamer and about 1.5 cups of rice . But the steamer tray doesn't hang off the lid of the bowl . Instead , the plastic tray needs to sit on top of the rice . Making things more icky is the tray has 4 rubber feet on it - - - presumably to prevent scratching on the bowl . I am definitely not comfortable with the idea of having the plastic tray , the rubber feet , and my rice all submerged together in boiling water for the duration of the cooking process . Those two are the only complaints I have with this unit . Everything else about the Sanyo ECJ-HC55s is fantastic . Rice comes out perfect - - - individual grains retain their consistency , and don't come out as clumpy as they did with ordinary rice cookers . The unit is also highly efficient at retaining heat . Other than the little steam vent , there's virtually no place for heat to escape the rice cooker . It is sealed extremely well - - - heat and moisture are perfectly contained . I don't even bother using the keep warm function of the rice cooker . Even with the warmer function turned off , rice that was cooked at noon will remain perfectly moist and somewhat lukewarm at 6pm . This is a far cry from ordinary rice cookers I had been using for the past 30 years . Computerized rice cookers are notorious for their sloooow cooking times , and the Sanyo ECJ HC55S is no exception . 1.5 cups of white rice takes about 45 minutes to cook , and brown rice needs about 90 minutes . When I bought this unit , I was definitely apprehensive about the long cooking times . But it turns out that it was no inconvenience at all . All I needed to do was adapt my routines to the new features offered by the HC55S . As a life-long rice eater , I had the habit of preparing rice about 30 minutes before lunch / dinner time . Given the long cooking times of these new rice cookers , I needed to alter my routine . I now use the timer function almost exclusively . Every night , I put the rice & water into the rice cooker at my leisure , and enter my approximate schedule into the panel ( i.e . 11 : 30 AM tomorrow ) . And the next morning - - - like magic - - - I would find my rice freshly cooked at exactly 11 : 30 AM . Definitely very convenient . A precise schedule isn't necessary though , since the unit is great at keeping the rice fresh for many hours after it's cooked . Overall , I highly recommend the Sanyo ECJ-HC55S . I would've given it 4.5 stars , but Amazon's rating system doesn't allow for 1 / 2 stars . . .
    • 001 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) Purchased this rice cooker for my wife . We are both enjoying it a lot . The parts are solid and simply feel like high quality . There are two bowls . The rice cooking bowl has a better non-stick coating on it . The other bowl for non-rice cooking is easy enough to clean , but might take a little soaking for those challenging situations . Selection is easy to understand . The slow-cook options are partially what sold me on this unit . You can cook so many things in this cooker , because you can manually cook instead of always having to follow a programmed option . Rice can be kept warm up to 12 hours . It has a great sealing system , so it does stay fresh . The unit looks very nice on the counter . The battery runs the clock , unless you keep the unit plugged into the outlet . The battery is suppose to run for 4 years or so . Quality of rice cooked - - The rice has been PERFECT every time we have cooked rice . We are using a Jasmine rice bought from a local asian market . We simply wash the rice twice , put in the required amount of water , and set it to cook . So far it has been perfect each time . I ended up buying this over the Zojirushi based on price and couldn't be happier . I saved maybe a $100 and am 100% happy with the product . We've been using this for 3 weeks now . Cleaning is easy and fast . The removable lid / seal is great and easy to clean . It is not possible to latch the cover if the removable cover is not in place - - a nice feature and great engineering . The steam collector works well . Be careful not to put your hand close to the exit hole as steam is not fully condensed coming out and could burn you . This is not really a safety concern for me and my wife . Cleaning the collector is not a problem so far . Simply remove and shake out the water . Any water dripping down is caught in a silicon seal . You can easily take a towl and soak up the very small amount of water that might drip out . It is only water and doesn't mess anything up . I would buy this over again based on my experience so far . Can't speak about reliability yet . I can only hope Sanyo brand will be good . I don't usually buy their products .

    • 003 4  Spent way too much time researching the various brands and finally decided on the Sanyo due to the slow cooking option . The first day I tried simple Jasmine rice and it came out perfect . Next Day tried Botan ( Medium Grain ) rice and once again it was cooked just like a resturant . Decided to try a simple slow cook chicken stew recipe from the internet , came out good and the slow cook function worked very well . Granted it's only been a week since I've had it but I have to highly recommend it due to it's versitility . Some of the feature that stand out for me are ; 1 . 12 hour clock ( not 24 hour like some brands ) 2 . Contacted Sanyo about changing Battery ( clock ) and it can be changed by the user without shipping to Sanyo . ( does take a little common sense though ) 3 . Comes with two pans , one for Rice , other for slow cook along with a steaming tray and tofu tray . 4 . EASY TO USE ! 5 . Makes great rice ! I don't think I needed to spend more money for better taste . 6 . Looks to be built well . For those who are wondering , it's manufactured in China . I'm very happy with this cooker !
    • 004 4  Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White I have now used the Sanyo ECJ-HC55S about 50 + times since I bought it from Amazon . Hopefully , my review will help prospective buyers make an informed decision . As of 2009 , Sanyo is offering 3 types of 5 - cup Sanyo rice cookers in this price range ( $100 to $135 ) . There's the D55S , F50S , and HC55s . It was definitely a chore to sort through the marketing lingo and specs sheets . The final conclusions are as such : The D55s is at the low end of the spectrum , with fewer features and a thinner bowl . Both the F50S and HC55S occupy the slot above it . • 005 4  This cooker replaced the National fuzzy logic that I had used at least 3 - 4 times a week for 5 years . With all the new rice cookers on the market it was hard to find one that had the features that I wanted , without a bunch that I didn't need . I really don't need to bake a cake in my rice cooker ! ! What I use the most are the slow cooker options and the rice options . I mostly make short grain brown rice and this model cooks it much faster than my old National . I also loved that this cooker came with an extra pan and lid for the slow cooker . . . which makes it a great value . If it is important for you to know the length of the cook cycles , I suggest that you time them the first time you use them because the instruction booklet does not give the times for the cycles . My old National would show the length of the cycle when you started each cycle , i.e . when using the regular cycle it would show 43 minutes on the clock . This cooker only shows the time left when it gets down around 15 minutes . The brown rice cycle cooks in 75 minutes . I cooked quinoa on the quick cycle the other day and it was done in approximately 30 minutes . Another option I like on this model compared to the National is that , so far , the lid is easier to clean . The national used to bubble up through the steam vent and make a mess that was not easy to clean from the rubber gasket , but the Sanyo doesn't do that and the lid barely needs to be washed after cooking a batch of rice . I wish these types of cookers would make removable upper lids so that they could be kept cleaner . I also love that this model has the slow cooker and that there is both high and low slow cook cycles . This cooker is just right for a small family or couple , but if you generally cook for more than 3 people , I would recommend the larger model . I can make enough soup for 4 people if bread and salad were served , but it may only serve several people if they had large appetites . It definitely does not have enough room in the slow cooker to do large roasts . Great value , great cooker , I highly recommend it .
    • 006 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) This is a good rice cooker when it works . However , the titanium coding of the inner pot peels off after several month of normal usage and becomes unsafe to cook food . Even though the rice cooker comes with 1 year warranty . Sanyo does not have any customer service on the pot at all . To make the situation even worse , Sanyo does not even have a replacement pot customers can buy to keep using the rice cooker safely . In my opinion , Sanyo still has a long way to go to catch up Zojirushi for the quality of it's products . $100 for a rice cooker which only last 9 month is not something i will do again . Update : Finally got some comfirmation from Sanyo about the inner pot . There is absolutely nothing Sanyo can do , i lose my $100 . Buyers beware : Sanyao has discontinued manufactured any of the inner pots . This is a product with no warranty !

    • 008 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) I read an NYTimes article about rice cookers around the same time I was starting a diet which recommended whole grains and steal cut oatmeal . . . so I read obsessively about all the different kinds of rice cookers , the reviews etc . , and settled on this one based on combination of features and price . Yes , $132 isn't cheap , but OMG ! What a FANTASTIC appliance ! Well-deigned , very well-built ( nothing cheap feeling ) and it does EXACTLY what it says really , really well . So far I've made oatmeal every day , brown rice , and I've steamed veggies and they've all come out fantastic ! There's a bit of a learning curve on the veggies - what's the right amount of time for the veg . you select for the doneness you prefer , but that's expected . I'm looking forward to really using the slow cooker this winter . And the oatmeal ! Check it out - you can put in your steel-cut oatmeal and water the night before , set the time , and it'll be cooked and waiting when you wake up ! Soaking the oatmeal just helps it cook faster in the morning , it doesn't ruin it , like setting your coffee timer , only better ! I'm single , and I like to cook , but I'm also really busy so I love the Set it and forget it way you can cook with this . As for size , I probably could have done with a smaller one ( being a single girl ) , but I'd rather have too much than too little and I did have space for it . Maybe if I had a family , I'd want a bigger model - hard to say . But barring the size , I'd go with a Sanyo with this exact feature set and I just can't imagine you wanting anymore . My only criticism is the instruction manual is pretty lousy . nevertheless , I love my ECJ-HC55S and it makes me wonder why all appliances can't meet such a high level of quality .

    • 010 4  My old , standard , one-button rice cooker seems so primitive compared to this device . I've used it to cook white and brown rice , slow cook , and steam . The rice comes out properly cooked , and truly tastes better than with my older cooker . I presume the other space age rice cookers ( e.g . made by Tiger , Zori ) make great rice as well , but I've never compared . Two bowls are provided ; they are heavy and high quality , and zero rice sticks them , making clean up super easy . Steaming is also a snap ( although everything has to fit in the unit , so size might be a limitation ) . For some reason , on two occasions , the rice cooker malfunctioned - - didn't heat up to temperature and rice stayed uncooked . The past few times it has worked fine . So , the verdict is still out if this is as reliable as the trusty one-button cooker .
    • 011 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) great rice cooker . The instructions are a bit vague but , you can figure them out . There should be a chart relating American rice types to the Asian types . But , a little trial and error figures it out . . The features are poorly explained in the instructions . For example , the timers . One neat feature I discovered is that you use the markings in the rice pot to load it ( use the cup that came with the unit to measure rice ) , select rice type , then push the start button and forget it . The fuzzy logic will cook the rice properly , shut off and turns on warmer . This is really neat . The rice is always just right never over / under done . I live on fried rices , Basmati and Jasmine are my favorites . Basmati is brown , follow brown rice directions . Jasmine is white follow white rice directions . Cal Rose rice ( sticky rice ) is good but needs special handling or it will clump in a hard ball . . . ( wash when done to remove sticky , then spread out to dry , before cooking fried rice . Very tasty . . The steamer is great for veggies . The rest I haven't used yet . . . This is a 5 cup unit . The best overall size . I use three cups for the fried rices . This is quality unit . The parts are well made and unit is very easy to clean . The rice paddle is very handy . Don't skimp on a cheapy unit . You get what you pay for . . . Note : The measuring cup seems to compensate for final cooked rice volume , don't use standard measuring cups .

    • 013 4  After using our Zojirushi rice cooker for more than a decade , it's starting to act its age , so I got this cooker when it showed up one day on Today's Deals for half the price . When I first got it , I thought I had made a mistake because it looked so small compared to our old 5.5 cup Zojirushi cooker . To my surprise , though , it actually accommodated more rice cooking room - - and perfectly every time . I loved everything about this little beauty - - small yet plenty and versatile in usage . I also love the fact that it came with two titanium bowls , two inner lids and detachable steam vent , along with other useful items for tofu cooking and steaming . So why only 3 stars ? I didn't notice this at the beginning , but increasingly with each use , the cover has been giving me hard time by refusing to close nicely . Without the inner lid , it simply refuses to close at all . In order to clean the inner lid , I'd then have to get the other lid or leave the cooker open while I clean it . Even with the inner lid perfectly fitted inside , the cover refuses to close to my growing frustration . I have to press the cover down about three times on average before it finally closes . I inspected very carefully between the cover and the inner lid to make sure nothing's getting in the way . Everything looks good , but the cover doesn't close easily . I don't get it . Since none of the reviewers of this cooker has reported this problem , I guess it's an isolated case . If the problem continues , I'll just have to return it and get something else .
    • 014 4  I had to have a great rice cooker . Not just one of those cheap ones with the glass lids that almost no one in Asia has anymore , but a fancy , computerized one . So when I saw this rice cooker on Amazon and saw that it had a separate pot for steaming / slow cooking , I was sold . I actually had my eye on a 5.5 cup Zojirushi cooker before , but the features ( compared to this Sanyo one ) just did not compare or justify the price difference . Have had this cooker for about three months now , and have used it at least once a week ( some weeks more , some weeks less . . . it varies due to my schedule and pantry items ) . Rice comes out cleanly and evenly-cooked every time ( even if I add too little or too much water ) . I've been cooking jasmine rice and brown rice in here , and have been able to keep both jasmine and brown rice in the fridge for up to five days without it spoiling and getting too hard to eat ( especially for fried rice ) . I've also steamed dumplings in it , and the only complaint I have regarding that is that I wish there was a better steam tray for this unit . The steam tray that comes with this cooker has concave dips in it to accommodate 8 eggs , and that gets slightly annoying , but only from an aesthetic point of view . Not really a dealbreaker ! The recipe booklet that comes with this cooker has some great recipe ideas . I've only tried the beef rice jook recipe so far . It's a bit on the thick side ( like the consistency of REALLY thick oatmeal ) , but it at least gives you a starting point to tweak the recipe to your liking on some popular Asian ( mainly Chinese ) dishes . Timer function is great , if a bit confusing to remember the first few times , along with the 12 - hour warming function ( though I've never had to use the warming function for longer than an hour so far ) . No warming function for rice porridge , but if you turn the unit off and then back on again , it will automatically stay on warm . The noise that this unit makes when your food is done is also not the usual somewhat-annoying , very cheesy musical tunes that a lot of other fancy rice cookers have . It's just a standard beeping noise , and not too annoying or long . Overall , I couldn't be happier with this cooker . If I can find a better steaming tray so that I can maybe steam some meals with my rice , I would be in heaven . This cooker definitely has the potential to do it all .
    • 015 4  I replaced my old rice cooker with this unit , thinking I could cook better rice plus other foods . I am impressed with the cooking performance and ease of use . I eat brown rice and it is not only easy to make , but I time it to be ready when I get home from work . The rice turns out wonderful . I mix up different dishes and use the slow cook pot on some days to make chicken stew or noodle soup . Great idea to include both pots . High quality and nice looking . I keep it on my counter .
    • 016 4  Great rice cooker . Rice is cooked just right every time . But that is what I expected this from this device . Now for the unexpected : Eggs , soft boiled and hard boiled ( steamed actually ) come out perfectly . The timing on soft eggs need to be adjusted for desired consistency . Just follow the directions for hard eggs . The hard cooked eggs are easier to peel than boiled eggs . Another surprise is the perfect cooking of steel cut oats . Since the oats are steamed there is no danger of burning and sticking to the cooking vessel . Overall I am very pleased with this appliance and highly recommend it .
    • 017 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) I picked the Sanyo ECJ-HC55S based on the positive reviews on Amazon and because it came with a second bowl and lid . If you're looking to use your rice cooker for more than just making rice , I strongly recommend this model , which costs about $10 more than the model with a single bowl . The second bowl allows you to make flavored rice dishes , without leaving any flavors behind to flavor your plain rice . Both pots are very heavy , allowing for very even cooking and no burning . Cleanup is also very easy , due to the very effective , non-stick coating and the easily removable lids . As with most rice cookers in this category and price point , it does an excellent job on rice . Measure your rice with the included cup , give it a rinse , add water to the measures inside the rice bowl , select the appropriate program ( white rice in regular , firm , and soft , brown rice , sushi rice , porridge , etc ) and you are rewarded with perfect rice in about an hour . There is also a nice countdown timer for the last 10 minutes . Once the rice finishes and moves to the keep warm setting , your rice stays great for hours , nice and moist with perfect temperature . So far we have used this cooker for white and brown rice , as well as jambalaya , paella , lemon rice and rice and sausage . You can saute vegetables right in the cooker , before adding the rice , to make complete meals right in the cooker . Just use the Quick Cook program to heat the cooker up immediately , saute your veggies , then add rice and liquid and reset to a normal program ( white or brown rice ) and the cooker does the rest .

    • 019 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) I've had a large Zojirushi rice cooker for years . I wanted something with a smaller footprint , but without losing the fuzzy-logic feature of the Zojirushi . This is it ! It is just as good as my Zojirushi , and much smaller ( yet , it cooks up nearly as much rice ! ) . I was also interested in this for its slow cooker abilities , because my slow cooker is large and sometimes I'd like to use a smaller one . I haven't yet tried this as a slow cooker , but everything works so well , I feel sure that I'll like it . In addition to making great rice in it , I cook up steel cut oats for morning oatmeal ( using the porridge setting ) . But here is one very unexpected pleasure - it cooks eggs , hard and soft boiled . There is a steamer insert with eight or so indents to hold the eggs . Hard-boiled eggs cook perfectly on the steamer setting in just about 24 minutes . The most perfect and easiest hard boiled eggs I've ever made ! Haven't tried soft-boiled eggs , but other than to get the timing down , I know they will be much easier than any other method . A great unit . I highly recommend it . I've already bought a second one for another family member . She's equally enthusiastic about it . Both units , so far , work flawlessly . I'm hoping they are as reliable as my Zojirushi , which is over 8 years old .

    • 021 4  What you have to understand is that I hardly ever cooked rice before . Oh , except for the instant boil-in bags ! And when I did , it came out sticky , dry , or burned . I have a large , busy family with 4 teens so I thought I'd get a big fuzzy logic rice cooker because I'd heard raves ( read the excellent The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook by Hensperger and Kaufman ! ) and wanted to finally incorporate whole grains into our diet every day . Fuzzy logic cookers are not like the regular old rice steamers ; instead they use some kind of computer magic to determine how long to cook rice perfectly every time . Then I saw this one with a smaller footprint , and for some reason I had to have it too . The bottom line is that I use it EVERY SINGLE DAY to make brown rice , quinoa , Bhutanese red rice , forbidden black rice , whole wheat couscous . . . all the whole grains you're supposed to be eating . It is absolutely my favorite kitchen appliance and I actually try to take it when I travel ! I NEVER use the larger fuzzy logic because this one makes plenty ! My kids use the hard-boiled egg feature almost daily , too , because the eggs come out perfectly and you can make 7 at a time . The timer and controls are SUPER EASY and it comes with extra bowls etc . For tofu , you must use the homemade soy milk , not commercial . The steamer is nice , and the crock pot too , but I use the microwave for steaming and have much larger crockpots for stews and pot roasts etc . Eat more whole grains ! By the way , I've lost 80 lbs . eating more vegetables and whole grains . Get this Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5.5 cup rice cooker ! Highly recommended .
    • 022 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) The customer help from Sanyo is terrible . I had a problem with the top lid . The internal spring for closing the lid broke after 3 months and the sanyo customer service insisted it is not covered under the warranty and said they will try to fix it at charge . The service representative was not courteous . I as asked to prepay to fix this . But the Amazon was kind eneough to replace the defectvie at no cost .

    • 024 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) I will be frank : I love this rice cooker ! Okay , that's out of the way . On to the actual review . Pros : - - Cooks perfect rice every single time . This presupposes that one follows the instructions . The cooker comes with a rice measure . Use it . Water to the appropriate line for the rice / grain of choice . - - Cooks brown rice beautifully . Again , use the rice measure and water to the appropriate line for brown rice . - - Cooks steel-cut oats beautifully . I use the slow cooker . 1 cup oats , 4 cups water , pinch or two salt . Cook for 1.5 hours . Add dried fruit and additional water if needed ( it usually does ) and cook for another 15 to 30 minutes . I cook my oats at night for the week ahead so that I can haul it to work . 1 cup serving reheated for 2 minutes . I then add a touch ( about 1 / 4 cup ) soy or almond milk . Sweeten to taste . - - Cooks lentils and split peas easily in about 6 to 7 hours on low . Yes , the slow cooker will then sit on warm just like the rice . - - Easy as pie clean-up . I do recommend a gentle scrubbing . Be careful of your scrubbie as you don't want to scratch up that lovely titanium coating . Cons : - - Slow cooker cannot be set to start at a specific time . With plenty of sauce , it can sit on warmer for a good deal of time . Just like rice . - - Has a large counter-top foot print . I leave my cooker plugged in at all times . I am hoping on avoiding the battery replacement issue mentioned in other reviews . I have not cooked regular beans in this pot yet so I cannot speak to how those will turn out . If you are interested , watch this space for an edit later on after I have cooked beans . And there you have it . I recommend that you place the cooker in your shopping cart and watch for the price to drop . The price seems to very , very flexible . I bought mine for about $90 but saw it go from $90 to $135 and then inch its way back down in the 2 months that I was trying to make up my mind which cooker to purchase . 06 / 25 / 09 edit : I have had a bit more experience with my new best friend so here is an update : Lentils , on low , have taken up to 6 hours to cook . Black-eyed peas also take about 6 hours on low . I still haven't cooked beans so don't have any information there . I finally was brave enough to try steaming eggs this week . These were the tenderist ( is that a word ? ) boiled eggs that I have ever had . Comment for those still on the fence : Now that the heat of summer is upon us , it becomes important to keep from over-heating my kitchen . This rice / slow cooker is one of the most important tools for me to do that .

    • 026 4  Replacing an aging rice cooker , I looked at everything I could . This was the heavyweight champion . The heavy-gauge bowls - two of them - and the well designed , secure detachable inner lids show the quality of this device . Those were the features that sold me , and I was not disappointed . ( Also has a neato self-swallowing cord ! ) It makes PERFECT rice of many types ( yes I've already tried many types in it ) , keeps it warm ( or not , turned off ) for a very long time with little if any loss of quality . I haven't had a problem with the time it takes as some reports have ; the effortless perfect product more than compensates for any slight additional time . Easy to use , easy to clean , easy to store , works amazingly well , durable , not ugly . Comes with a double bowl . Does it work better than a loose-lid cooker , or a cheaper fuzzy-logic cooker ? You bet .
    • 027 4  I did so much research before deciding that I was going to splurge on this one . Its worth every penny , tried it for slow cooking , soups , rice porridge and all turned out perfect . Imagine warm rice , stew or soup after a long hard day of work . This one is for keeps !

It is the best rice cooker I ever had . I use it for , - Rice cook : timer cooked steam rice after 8 hours , it still tastes like fresh . You can start the cook in the morning . The rice will be ready when you get back from work in the evening . It uses only 10W / hour for keeping it warm . - Rice soup : almost every night , I add in 2tbs oat meal & 3 tbs rice & 3cups water into the slow cooker , and set it to 6 hours for slow cooking . In the morning morning , it has my rice soup done . It is so very well made with titanium , simply the best quality .

Finally decided I would move up in the world and get the Sanyo . I am so very pleased . It makes perfect rice , white or brown , every time . It keeps the white rice that has been cooked warm the whole day , so it is ready when you want it . The machine itself seems well built , the controls are easy to follow , and the pots for the rice are durable . Even the cord retracts inside for easy storage . Having used one of these , I can't imagine ever going back to one of the cheap ones . In the end you get what you pay for . You won't be disappointed with this sanyo rice cooker .

    • 032 4  I researched before I bought , but I never thought this cooker would be this great . I've cooked quinoa , white rice , wild rice , sweet rice , sushi rice , brown rice - - everything comes out perfect . Quinoa has been tough for me to get right - - until now . It comes out perfect every time ( on the white rice cycle ) . Today I took some previously cooked Swedish meatballs ( which are supposed to be very moist ) and put them on the steamer tray to reheat in there . They , too , came out perfect - - not funky like a microwave would do . I always thought rice cookers were silly , but no more ! I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be able to make perfect rice every time . And how in the world does white rice taste better than cooked traditionally ? I don't know , but it does . I told my husband today that it's the best appliance I've ever purchased . Sanyo ECJ-HC55S Rice cooker 5.5 cups . Awesome .
    • 033 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) This was a surprise gift to my wife , for no particular occasion . Just a sign of appreciation because she really , really likes rice but it's much more than a rice cooker . Of course , - it cooks porridge - it cooks sushi rice - it cooks rinse-free rice - it cooks haiga rice - it cooks mixed / sweet rice - it cooks brown rice - it cooks sprouted brown rice - it cooks ( if you are in a hurry ) your rice quickly In addition , - it slow cooks ( 2 settings ) - it makes tofu - it steams - it boils eggs Accessories include : a spatula , a measuring cup , a tofu container , inner lids for rice and slow cooking , titanium-coated and well marked inner pots for rice and slow cooking and recipes included in the manual and in a separate , full-color book by famous chef Martin Yan with 16 additional recipes . We've had this cooker for several months now and my wife is very happy with it . She often uses it to make soup and , of course , for rice . We haven't tried the tofu maker yet but she is using it , occasionally to steam vegetables or boil eggs . We were impressed by the easy to use controls - it takes about 10 minutes to learn how to operate it . Some of the more useful features include the ' keep warm ' capability that actually comes with a time indicator telling you for how many hours the contents have been kept warm and a timer that allows you to easily program the cooker to start at a specific time . To my surprise , the multilingual manual ( English / Japanese / Chinese ( ? ) / Korean ( ? ) is complete and written well enough to be easily understood ( the English section ) . We are very happy with this appliance . It fully deserves a 5 - star rating .

    • 035 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) I love this rice cooker . It makes perfect rice every time . It makes perfect steel cut oats every time . I've used this almost every single day since I got it and it has never done anything less than perfectly . I love setting up the rice to be ready when I get home from work . The slow cooker is pretty good also , though smaller than one dedicated to just slow cooking . A lot of research was done before purchase . The need to get the biggest bang for the buck . I love Zoji , but their products , while excellent , are really kind of pricey for what you get , and having been horribly burned by the dreadful quality of the rice cooker I owned previously , I wanted no mistakes this time . What can I say , this thing is perfect for me . For those of you who've never owned a rice cooker before , it's important to understand that 5 - 1 / 2 cup's equal 11 cups , and that their cups are 6 oz . You can make much smaller amounts ( as I do ) with excellent results . Oh , also , it makes the best hard cooked eggs ever . Tender white , creamy yolk , no greenish ring . The steamer has 8 little indentations for you to place the eggs in . It takes , for large eggs at room temp , 25 minutes .

    • 039 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) I never review products , but with this , I just had to . I am a non-cook and purchased this for three simple things . Steel cut oatmeal , brown rice , and perfect hard cooked eggs . This rice cooker does not dissapoint . Its easy to use . Clean up is a snap . I will never have to throw out eggs again , because of my fail cooking skills . It will only do a small serving of the steel cut oats . Half a cup of oats and two cups of water on the porridge setting overnight . A batch bigger than that and it will boil over . So if you need more oats than that the bigger model may be best . Quinoa comes out perfect also , use the white rice setting and the measurements and directions on the quinoa bag / box . Just do not add more liquid than the highest white rice line in the bowl , again boilover issues . My only small wish , was that the end of cycle timer was a little louder , if you aren't right there with it , you may not hear it . Definately five stars , I would rate it higher if I could .

    • 041 4  I used this rice cooker 3 times this week , with 3 different types of rice to experiment with the rice cooker . The fuzzy logic is an amazing feature . It takes the worry out of burning and overcooking rice . Tonight I made a shrimp & rice creole . I added the brown rice and water to the waterline in the pot . I then added fresh mushrooms , giant shrimp , oil and spices on top of it and mixed it up . Put it on the steam brown rice setting and in approx 45 minutes had an amazing meal . All elements were perfectly cooked and not overdone . Pretty amazing cooker ! ! It's also very easy to clean , and I love the titanium bowls that come with it . I rate it A + + + +
    • 042 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) My fiance ' is a serious ( high-tech ) rice cooker fan . Hates cooking rice in a pot , and thought my older , simplistic , make-in-the-microwave version was useless ( I thought it was effective and economical ) . When we decided to get a new electronic rice cooker ( we'd given his away years earlier in the quest for space in a NYC metro apartment ) , we wanted something that was easy to use and that made perfect rice , yet was relatively small , could multitask , and wasn't going to break the bank . THIS IS IT ! ! ! We've had it for a few months now , and have used it as a rice cooker , slow cooker , or steamer every other week on average . It works well , makes great food with a minimum of effort , and was a great value . No it's not the cheapest , but it does what the expensive ones do without their price tags . Makes perfect amounts for a couple small family , and is reasonably sized for that task .

    • 044 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) We've had the Sanyo ECJ H55 S rice cooker for about six months and have made dozens of batches of rice of virtually every variety with it . It cost us twice as much as our former rice cooker , but since it's twenty times better , it's a steal , even though it's over a hundred bucks . It's easy to use , program , and understand . The retractable cord is a big plus , and its compact size lets us shelve it when it's not being used . If counter space were more plentiful in our kitchen , we'd keep it out , because it looks good and has an accurate digital clock built in . It's easy to clean after use , and since it doesn't boil over like our previous ( Cuisinart ) cooker , only the internal parts that are in contact with the rice need to be scrubbed . The non-stick finish cleans up in a flash and looks like it's going to last forever . In my opinion , this is the one you want .

    • 046 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) I'm really pleased with this rice cooker / slow cooker . It is simple to use and works very well . My daughter , husband and I are all using it and it is worth the counter space it takes up . We've been cooking rice a whole lot more and I've also used it to make pot roast ( 7 hours on the slow cooker ! ) This is a great size machine for my family of three , I'd recommend it for a family of four also .

    • 048 4  Over the past 30 years , I have used Tiger , Zojirushi , Panasonic and other brand rice cookers and after a few months of using the Sanyo , I like this one better than my prior rice cookers - the price ( $100 range ) is also very reasonable . I have made rice ( Jasmine , Basmati , Korean , Japanese ( sushi ) , brown ) and they all came out just right - evenly cooked from top to bottom , side to side . Obviously , you have to know how much water to put in - follow the instructions and then add more or less water to suit your preference . Yes , you can also make soups , boil eggs , and do many other stuff with it but I use the rice cooker primarily to . . . cook rice ! I made soups with this once and it was okay - kind of reminds me of those old Crock pots . I like to make my soups fresh and add the ingredients at different times so I don't think I'll be using it to make soups . As for eggs , I tried it once and the eggs turned out fine . But I have a microwavable egg cooker which does just as good a job . . but faster . It does not really have a negative but I would recommend that you make only enough for 1 meal ( 5.5 cups or less is right for a family of 4 - 6 ) . It has a nice warming feature and can keep it warm for you for 1 day . After that , your rice will get dry and won't taste good . So make just enough rice for the meal . If you are like me and think it's wasteful to throw away rice when you have some left over , then the best thing to do is store it , fridgerate it and microwave it - won't be as good as fresh cooked rice but it's better than dried out rice . It's easy to wash and once done , I retract the chord and put it back on its shelf to free up counter space .

Haven't yet tried the slow cooker since we just took it out of the box a week ago . Moved in to a new house and the Sanyo ECJ-HC55S looks great in the kitchen . Matches well with the Stainless Steel appliances . The rice cooker has worked flawlessly since we put it to use . So easy to operate , material looks very well made . Hopefully it lasts a long time .

What a difference , especially for brown and sweet rices that seem to benefit from the computerized timer . Also does a great job with eggs ( hard boiled in the steamer tray , complete with little egg ' notches ' ) and for steaming vegetables .

    • 057 4  This rice cooker is great ! It cook all different types of rice perfectly and triples as a steamer and slow cooker . I have not made anything to date that has not been good . If you are looking for a product that cooks rice but also does a few other things better I would definitely recommend it .
    • 058 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) I bought this rice cooker after researching rice cookers at consumersearch.com and reading the reviews here . It seemed to be a good value for a fuzzy-logic cooker . So far I'm very pleased . The cooker feels well-made . . . among other things , the inner pots ( one each for rice and slow cooking ) are sturdy , and the hinges and latches for the outer and inner lid feel secure . The controls are easy enough to understand , and both the pot and inner lid are easy to clean . The rice I've made thus far ( both white and brown ) turned out beautifully , even when making just a single cup . I like that it counts down the time remaining near the end and beeps when the rice is done . I haven't yet tried using as a steamer or slow cooker , but I'm looking forward to that . One caution : though it's a 5 - 1 / 2 cup cooker , it will only do 4 cups of brown rice . If you plan on making brown rice for a crowd , you may want a bigger cooker .

Price is usually my first marker , and spending this much on a rice cooker had to be justified . I've owned cheaper rice cookers and the rice just never came out the way I liked . So , I've ended up wasting a lot of rice due to it going bad . I switched from white rice to brown rice and have to say this cooks brown rice to perfection . Nice and fluffy and not chewy and undercooked and leftover rice in the warmer is perfect . It also a steamer and does other functions as well . I'm very happy with my purchase . If your looking to skimp on a cheaper rice cooker , don't . There is a reason these rice cookers are more expensive . They do a very good job , you waste less , and save money overall .

This 5.5 cup rice / slow cooker , steamer and tofu maker take the top spot for me . I have not tried the tofu or steam cooking yet . However , rice of all kinds are cooked to perfection . Slow cooking is also a breeze with this unit . I couldn't really ask for anything more for the money . Great value and excellent performance .

Very high build quality . Extra pan and lid liner , steamer tray included . I've mainly used this for rice and soft-boiled eggs . I like being able to load rice in the morning and have hot rice ready when I get home from work . Need to use the second pan and try some of the recipes in the cookbook . The excellent quality of this unit and the results with the rice , would probably push me purchase the Sanyo ECJ-PX50S pressure rice cooker available on Amazon .

    • 066 4  I've had rice steamers for years and because I take bento lunches to work needed a rice cooker with a timer . Well , abandon steamers . This makes far superior rice . Sushi rice is wonderful , and brown rice cooks wonderfully and in no time at all . The price is great and it has a small footprint , just perfect for small kitchen . It works for a family of four , sometimes with rice to spare .
    • 067 4  I am absolutely LOVING this rice cooker ! HOWEVER , when I began taking out the various parts and accessories , I dropped the strainer . Alas , one of the feet on it broke off immediately . I'm really disappointed , because I wanted very much to use that particular feature regularly . Otherwise , every type of rice I've made comes up either perfectly or near-perfectly ( the adverts state all the types of rice , but the machine itself doesn't include all those rices in the cooking choices ) .
    • 068 4  Cooks all types of rice beautifully & saves time . Rice is never over or undercooked . This is the best purchase we made in 2008 . Brown rice comes out the nice & fluffy . The timer function ensures that we have warm rice ready to serve when we need it . It is the perfect size cooker for a small family . I have used it only for a month so cannot say much about durability .

I only eat brown rice and trust me I struggled with cooking it on the stove top . With this baby I have made perfect rice everytime . I love the timer setting . I actually dont have a problem with the timer being the time you want the stuff to be finished . I would rather not have to calculate how long it would take something to cook . This way it will simply be ready when you want it to be . So far I have not had to do any guess work in figuring out the measurements . Just followed the lines on the bowl and used the little plastic cup . Horay perfect brown rice everytime . It's small , cute , quiet , and not much steam is emitted . Even my uncle wants one . Highly reccomended .

Just a guy that was looking for a quality rice cooker . One that would make my life easier and one that would not force me to re-enroll in ITT to learn how to use it . This unit came highly acclaimed on various sites , had the logic circuitry that I wanted and did not require a mortgage . This cooker is so user friendly and makes FABULOUS foods and FABULOUS rice every stinkin ' time without a babysitter . The clock and circuitry on the front panel remain on and visible even when the unit is not plugged in due to an internal battery . This is rippin ' cool cuz I did not want to be forced to leave it plugged in due to limited counter space but also I did not want to reset the stupid thing every time I did replug it in ! Cool stuff . Great cooker in every way . It has a cool push-button lid that when pressed it allows the hinged top to open at just the right rate due to power controlled hinges preventing the unit from just flinging open . Just quality and thoughtful all around . Would buy it again in a heartbeat !

    • 076 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) I'd been lurking about trying to get the best price on this rice cooker because of the great things I'd read about it . I really wanted the grey model but didn't want to spend the few dollars more just for a different color . I ordered the white one and two days later saw the grey one for under $100 . on warehouse deals . The description said there was slight cosmetic damage to the unit but was otherwise new ( probably a return ) . As fate would have it they were delivered on the same day . My plan was to open the grey one and if it was in good shape , keep it and return the white one . I even had my first meal planned and ready to put in the cooker . I opened it up and it looked perfect , everything was intact . I set the clock ( battery operated ) , washed the bowl , placed the ingredients in the bowl and followed the directions to start the cooking process . Nothing happened , nothing . The menu button did not move through the choices , the cook start button did nothing . I switched outlets , nothing . Consulted the troubleshooting section of the manual . No solution . Then I noticed that the warrantee info had been filled in , probably by the first owner . I think they knew it wasn't working and simply returned it to amazon . Amazon expertly re-packaged it but apparently didn't check to see if it actually worked ! The good news is that I had the white one waiting . I quickly unpacked it and cooked a a delicious dinner ( Thai coconut / lime rice to which I added some already cooked chicken . Recipe from the Beth Hensperger book ) . I can't say how absolutely thrilled I am . I didn't give this 5 stars because I just haven't used it enough , but if this first meal is any indication of the future , I can't wait ! As for the defective one , the price was too good to be true . Beware the warehouse deals . UPDATE : I have made Kabuli Pilau ( Afghan national dish ) with brown basmati rice , hard boiled eggs , sticky rice that I then returned to the cooker and made into sweet coconut rice served with mangos and all were perfect . This is one great machine . As for the other rice cooker , I will say that the return process was very easy .

    • 078 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) This rice cooker works very well . The only trick is to make sure you use the supplied cup to measure the rice - - it is not a full US 8oz measure . However , you may still want to use a bit less water than the pot indicates to obtain firmer rice - - that's our preference anyway . We find ourselves eating more rice than before ( used to cook in a pot ) , as it all comes out plump and not too sticky . Now , we're experimenting with mixed brown and white to compensate for the increase . The controls are simple enough , although the directions are not as clear which line to use for water . It's all easy to figure out , though .

It replaced a 25 dollar rice cooker . Boy-what a difference ! I liked my cooker so much I purchased two of these 5 cup cookers for birthday presents . I highly recommend this cooker based of feedback from the people who received it as a gift . The 10 cup cooker I have is overkill unless you have a very large family . It cooks brown rice perfectly every time . I feed both my dogs brown rice everyday . Brown rice is a nice supplement to their regular food . As a steamer , it works well too . It is well worth the price .

    • 084 4  I'm extremely pleased with this rice cooker . When I was originally looking around at rice cookers , I had some with much higher price tags in mind . A few friends of mine have this one and said that it works as well as or better some of the much-more-expensive rice cookers . They swore by it , so I gave it a chance . I'm glad I did ! One of the features I absolutely needed my rice cooker to have was a brown rice function , which this rice cooker does . Although it takes a while longer than making rice on the stove , it's fool-proof . Before I got this rice cooker , I hadn't had brown rice that * tasted * like brown rice in a while . Unfortunately , white rice is the more popular choice at restaurants around here , and my old on / off rice cooker turned brown rice into a gooey mess . I haven't actually tried the regular / white rice function ( I don't eat white rice ) , but I'd have to assume that it can handle that task with ease . I have used this machine to make grains like quinoa and millet as well . Like with the brown rice , they take a while longer , but all you need to do is make sure you've planned ahead and start your grains or rice at the appropriate time . The tofu cycle was something I had less luck with . I tried several times and used up a whole bottle of soy milk . After some reading , I found out that you have to use freshly-made soy milk , not the commercial kind . The way I see it , the tofu making cycle of this rice cooker is a bonus feature , and I'd love the machine whether or not I'm able to make tofu with it . I also have a slow cooker , so I don't really use the slow cooker function too often . One time , I was using my slow cooker to make something else and I cooked beans in my rice cooker . They turned out great !

I was not happy with the brown rice in my old cheap rice cooker . It also spit all over the counter when I cooked brown rice . This makes perfect brown rice every time with NO mess . It does take over an hour to cook but when it is that good it is worth it . It is easy to clean . If I could change one thing , this cooker starts a countdown at 13 minutes of remaining cook time . I wish that it would beep when the countdown begins .
    • 090 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) We owned it for 10 months . No problem at all . The cooking size is good for 2 - 5 people . We like the slow cooking function and programmable timer function . The only comment is that the timer function cannot be used in slow cooking . We feel a little bit inconvenient . If you want to make good rice from it , just follow the manual and cook book . You'd better use the rice species from Asia to get authentic Asian style rice , by the way . I am very satisfied with the manufacturing quality of this one ( but certainly it's made in China ) .

    • 092 4  Had it for about 2 - 3 years . Use it all the time . rice is always right , no guesses and the slow cooker is just perfect . I am very careful with the pot inserts as the surface has to be treated gently , but i never had a problem . I also learned a trick that i use often , instead of soaking any beans overnight and then cooking them for hours , I just wash them and put in the RICE pot and cook on regular rice setting for 2.5 hours . come out absolutely perfect ! All rice settings work just as advertised , rice is not over / under cooked . but i love the slow cooker even better . coming home to a nice hot meal is perfect , especially if you did not slave in the kitchen for hours . it will cook from frozen as well . for examptle i put in frozen chicken legs / breasts ( i prewash them before freezing ) , chopped onion , other things to taste and come home to a ready delicious meal . so nice . i use the steamer too . never used the tofu maker , should try it next .
    • 093 4  This is the first rice cooker I have ever purchased . My wife and I have used this cooker for about one month and have been very pleased . It does a very good job on the white rice and the slow cooker is also very convenient . If any problems develop , I will come back and post them .
    • 094 4  It cooks rice perfectly and slow cooks very precisely . The timer function is a wonderful bonus so you can time your rice to be cooked by the time you get home or set you slow cooker to cook for hours that you want it to .
    • 095 4  This review is from : Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5 - 1 / 2 - Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker , White ( Kitchen ) This is a great overall cooking machine . It can cook not only rice ( many many kinds ) but also tofu ( though , I haven't try this because I cannot find one of the ingredients here ) and any other steamed food that you can imagine . It comes with two inner pots , one for rice and the other for steam or slow cook as well as plastic tray for tofu and eggs ( yeah . . . you can boil eggs also ) . The built is quite good , feel solid enough . The inner pots are well cast with easy clean coating . There are plenty of ' intelligent ' program to play with : white rice , brown rice , sushi rice , tofu , steam , slow cook . . . bla bla . Overall , I love it ! I have it for 5 months and it still works like new ! Good choice for your household : - )
    • 096 4  This is a great overall cooking machine . It can cook not only rice ( many many kinds ) but also tofu ( though , I haven't try this because I cannot find one of the ingredients here ) and any other steamed food that you can imagine . • 097 4  It works well for rice , but don't try to cook oatmeal with this thing , despite the fact that it has a Porridge setting . Oatmeal goo will start bubbling out of the top and then you will spend a long time trying to clean up because oatmeal paste will have oozed into every nook and cranny of the cooker lid . You will not be able to take off the hinged top to clean it . In retrospect , we would have been better off with a lower-tech alternative .
