Toshiba Mini NB205-N310/BN 10.1-Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life

  • ) I've really grown to appreciate this little netbook since I bought it a few days ago . I think it's just the right size for a mini-laptop who's primary purpose is word processing , internet browsing , and an occasional movie watching ( maybe even the occasional video game ) . I went out and bought a 2gb stick of memory because I knew I was going to be upgrading to windows 7 and figured I needed it . I originally installed Win 7 with only the 1 gb of memory that it came with , but the thing that surprised me was that it ran flawlessly with only 1 gb of RAM . I then installed the 2nd of ram and I noticed no difference in performance . If I were you , I wouldn't worry about upgrading to 2 GB of ram unless you plan on installing Vista ( because Vista definitely benefits from 2 GB's ) . I am a writer and college student and I already have a 15.4 HP DV5 . So why did I buy this netbook if I already had a notebook ? Because I wanted to have something light and small that I could carry around with me everywhere I went ( you never know when you're going to feel the spark to write ! ) , plus I wanted to have something lighter that I could take to class and take notes on . This laptop fits the bill perfectly , especially with its long battery life . I still use my Dv5 for virtually all of my non-writing needs such as playing video games , watching HD movies , and most of my internet surfing . I use this netbook for all my writing needs . It has all of my most up to date documents on it . It can be kind of tricky having two computers because sometimes you're not sure which file you put the most up to date file on . . . etc . I solved this problem by making the netbook the only computer I keep my writing up to date on . Otherwise it'll be a pain trying to figure out which file is most up to date and suffering the chance that you could lose some of your work . The speaker really is the worst I've ever seen on any laptop . Period . Okay . It's not THAT bad . You can hear it in a quiet room , but realistically , you have to expect to use headphones or external speakers when you're dealing with a netbook anyway . The keyboard on this netbook is the best one on the market in my opinion , which was the reason I decided to go with the Toshiba - otherwise I would have gone with a netbook with a higher resolution . The trackpad is okay . I find that when the computer is working hard the pointer gets laggy and skips . I noticed that the pointer works a lot smoother in Win7 than in XP . One thing I miss having in Win 7 is the side scroll feature . Apparently there isn't a driver for Win 7 yet , or at least I haven't found it yet . I also tried gaming on this little guy . It can play the original Counter-Strike 1.6 well with around 25 FPS . It also played Max Payne really well 30 + FPS constant . I tried Guild Wars , but it was too choppy to be playable even at the lowest resolution and lowest settings . It got maybe 10 FPS in GW . It might even be able to play KOTOR or some other great classics from a few years ago . : ) As far as Windows 7 , everything runs outstanding . Programs load just about the same speed . When I close the lid , it goes to sleep flawlessly and wakes up instantly when I go turn it back on . Aero is smooth , even Flip 3D . I'm pretty sure I can still get the 9 hours of battery life if I turned the brightness down to the lowest possible and turn off Wifi and bluetooth . I get closer to 6.5 - 7 hours with the brightness up and wifi on . I've been able to play all of the youtube videos without a problem , even HQ vids . You can't play HD videos though . Netflix videos play smooth when ran in Mozilla but not in I.E . 8 . Some hulu videos play smoooth some don't . I believe Mozilla is also the best browser for Hulu as well . I also managed to get Amazon videos to play perfectly smooth . If a video isn't playing smooth , I noticed it helped if you made the video window a little smaller so the video taxed the processor less since it is rendered over less pixels . Anyway . . . here's how I rate the NB205 : Design - 9 / 10 - Nice looking , barely more than 1 thick , just the right size for the ultimate travel netbook Features - 8 / 10 - Pretty average internal components Performance - 7 / 10 - I appreciated the 1000HE's ability to overclock the cpu Ease of use 10 / 10 - Best keyboard , great battery life , decent track pad Overall 9 / 10 - Great value , highly recommended as secondary laptop or primary laptop if you don't have high end multimedia needs .
    • 008 4  I too oogled netbooks for a long time , then just before I caved and got an acer , I found out this Toshiba NB 205 was released . All the reviews here so far ( 4 of them before I wrote this one ) are accurate : > Battery lasts LONG time . 6.5 hours real hours when not being conservative , however , it also takes long to charge when plugged in . I don't have figures , but I think it took 4 hours to do a full charge . I don't find that threating because either way I only have to plug in the adapter about 1 out of three coffee shops I visit . > The 6 - cell battery sticks out the back an inch and makes finding a netbook case more difficult , BUT here's the icing . The case logic 10 neoprene netbook case is a perfect fit , and has a perfect sized battery compartment . I got mine at radioshack , here it is on amazon : [ . . . ] > FULL SIZED Clicklet keyboard is niice and has quality build feel > Does Video playback well . > ram chip is upgradable to 2 gigs ( I already ordered one ) > speaker is mono , and mediocre , gets job done , that's about it . It's located on the bottom of the computer near the front lights . ( I don't use it in coffee shops so I don't care ) > hibernates quickly , comes back from hibernation quickly . Restarts faster than most laptops I've used . > web cam seems low quality ( I never use them so I'm not a pro on this one ) > There isn't a dedicated button to turn on / off wireless connection , nor are there dedicated buttons to turn up / down volume . You do them by pressing keys in conjuntion to the Fn ( Function key ( it's kinda like a extra shift button ) ) . This doesn't bother me , but is notable . > This netbook runs with a mild warmth , opposed to some other netbooks I've seen that run with a vague warmth . Still no where near hot like most laptops , and that warm represents the little extra power that you want . > Tilde key placed convieniently next to the space bar ( laugh , it's true ) . additional info I recommend : > the first thing you do is uninstall all the junkware , then run disk cleanup , then defrag , then making a backup of the whole partition with a utility like Acronis True Image 9 . > making the touchpad more sensitive > turn harddrive impact control from 3 to 2 ( maybe 1 ) or it triggers too much . > becomming familiar with the Fn keys ( it's like a shift button ) . Look for the gray commands on many buttons . Notice Page Up , Page Down , Volume Up / Down , Wireless On / Off settings , quick power settings etc . This is a nice netbook . Don't run . . walk and get this netboot because this netbook is for real men .
    • 011 4  We purchased two of these laptops - both have the same issues : serious trackpad lag , jumping , stalling , etc . We're using them with external mice , but if that won't be the case with you , I highly suggest you reconsider purchasing this laptop . Otherwise , it's a great laptop . I gave it a one star because this issue is unforgivable . Toshiba is aware of the issue but hasn't issued any kind of fix . Here's the link to Toshiba's forum where it's discussed : [ . . . ]
    • 012 4  As with others who were lucky enough to come across the NB205 - 310 , I went to MC recently to see their NB205 on sale for $349 . I was almost read to pop for that one , but asked the guy if it had bluetooth and he said another model had bluetooth ( the 310 ) and he had some in stock . In short , as others have observed , this is now the netbook to beat in terms of construction and design . It's a real beauty , from the patterned lid and keyboard to the hinge - - even the bottom just speaks quality . I'm glad to have been able to upgrade to an Atom 280 machine . I was a NC - 10 user , and actually had no problem with the Samsung's small trackpad , which has been enlarged on the NC110 and NC - 120 . The glide function in the Synaptics software actually makes using small trackpads a breeze . But the Toshiba is a whole different animal - - beautifully large track pad and actual real front buttons that are easy to use . My only gripe , as others observe , is the huge bezel around the screen . But in a way it actually makes the computer look pretty nice . And for my uses ( I already have another Tohisba U205 - 5067 with a small screen , and a Dell 1330 ) I don't want anything bigger than 10.1 inches - - 11 inch would be the max . Finally , Tohisba is now putting that great Config Free program back in their laptops . I adopted it for use on my Dell , and it's great on the NB205 !
    • 013 4  Update : 26 - Aug - 2009 - I have been using this computer for about 2 months now . Overall a good netbook , but the speaker problem is ridiculous . Initially , I was only using it on the road / traveling , so always used a headset . The last few weeks I've been using it more indoors , and the necessity to always use a headset is very annoying . I installed the latest audio drivers , which offered no improvement in performance . If I could change my rating , I would drop it to 3 stars based on the speaker issue alone . Really inexcusable . If you will always be using a headset , this remains a 4 star netbook . End Update > I purchased my NB205 based on Johnny Chan's and the Laptop Mag review . I am doing a three month project in Europe , and wanted a lightweight computer to take with me . Got it a few days before I left and have been using it for the last couple weeks . I wanted a computer for : 1 . Running MS Office , including being able to run some complex MS Access databases . 2 . Being able to browse the web . 3 . Being able to watch movies when traveling ( at least 6 hours of battery time ) . 4 . Something small that I could carry with me without getting aggravated . 5 . Being able to use MS Remote Desktop Connection to remote into client sites . First the negative : 1 . The speaker ( as noted by others ) is insufficient . In addition , the headphone jack is also underpowered . On a plane , with all settings turned up to max , I was still unable to achieve my desired volume level . 2 . When plugged in , I run at max power settings . I find the fan to be annoying as it turns on and off - it is also quite loud for a laptop fan . 3 . The screen had a pretty narrow optimal viewing angle . I find myself adjusting the tilt quite a bit to try to get it looking ' right ' . 4 . Would have like an option to set a larger virtual desktop and then scroll off the edges of the screen . I was actually very surprised this isn't an option . Software included with my new camera won't run because the screen resolution can't be set high enough . The positive : 1 . Watched 2 iTunes movies on the flight over and still had battery remaining . FYI - I tried renting an HD movie from iTunes , but the playback was very choppy . SD movies work pretty well . Don't forget to decrease the hard drive vibration sensitivity when traveling on a plane - light turbulence will trigger it . 2 . All MS Access databases I've tried so far work without any problems . 3 . Attractive and well-built . Very lightweight . 4 . Fits very well in Case Logic LNEO - 10 Ultraportable Neoprene Notebook Sleeve ( just wish it had a shoulder strap ) . 5 . Used it with Cisco VPN software to remote into Window's servers without a problem . Also using a Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 with no problems , and upgraded to 2 GB of memory with minimal effort ( had to use a little force to pop the memory cover off , but didn't cause any damage ) . Traveling by train this weekend - 10 hours each way , with a three day camping trip between . The Toshiba is going with me - if I notice anything during the trip , I'll update this review when I return . Note : would have given it 4.5 stars , but that is not an available rating . Update : Took my train trip last weekend . Mostly used the laptop to watch some iTunes movies . The battery seemed to run down a little faster . I got about 6.5 hours , but I probably could have tweaked the settings a little early on - kept the screen pretty bright for the initial movie . Just a reminder that if you want to get the 9 + hours of battery , you'll have to tweak settings . More problematic was the playback wasn't 100% smooth . A reboot helped , but since I'm not running many programs in general , I don't think I should be rebooting to watch a movie . I knock off the half star , and think 4 stars is a fair rating .
    • 019 4  ( A updated version of this review has been posted over at [ . . . ] for anyone that is interested . A number of pictures have also been added to the review . • 024 4  After researching for months I finally purchased my first netbook . I ended up going with the NB205 - N210 . Main models considered where the Asus100he / Samsung NC - 10 . I must say I'm very impressed with this product . The market for 10 netbooks is crammed full of very similar offerings . I ended up going with the Toshiba for the following reasons . 1 ) Its one of the latest on the market . I did not want to purchase a netbook that has been out for months as the technology changes so rapidly . This is one of the few Netbooks that is using Intel's Atom N280 processor over the more commonplace N270 . I'm sure the difference isn't too different , but I wanted the latest offering as far as processing power . 2 ) 9 Hour battery life for under $400 ! ! ! This is insane ! I have just used it after its first charge out of the box and it lasted for right about 8 : 30 hours before I finally decided to charge it up again . This claim is for real . I'm on the road a lot and am going to love not having to run a power chord after one hour on this netbook vs my Dell laptop . Most other netbooks that I was comparing to did not have the 9 hour life . Most were in the 3 - 6 hour range . 3 ) Brand name / Style . I have really been a fan of Toshiba laptops over the past decade . I feel they offer a real solid product and the NB205 definitely has not let me down so far . As for the style . . I think it really outclasses the other offerings out there . I was in a store and compared it to the Asus / HP / Gateway / Dell etc and they all felt chintzy and cheap feeling compared to the Toshiba . Again being late to offer a Toshiba , they had time to really see what consumers want . 4 ) Full size keyboard . I can actually type just as well on NB205 as I can on my home computers . The keyboard size is perfect . I'm also very glad that the Trackpad and associated buttons are large in size ! I actually have to type long emails for business and was very frustrated that other Netbooks had small keyboards and track pads . Rest assured that this keyboard is almost as large as my normal laptop and makes typing a breeze . Cons : 1 ) The only thing that I do not like about the NB205 is how the battery sticks out the back . The computer is compact overall , but I was nervous about finding a 10 case to fit it . Rest assured the Case Logic LNE0 - 10 fits this computer perfect ! I wrote a review as well about that case on here that you can look up . With the handles it makes carrying a breeze and it fits very snug . Overall , Ill deal with the batter sticking out because the battery life far outweighs the look . 2 ) Others have complained about loose batteries . Mine isn't loose , but you can feel it move every once in awhile when you place the computer in your lap or pull it in and out of its case . I guess time will tell how sturdy it is . I wish they would have made this more sturdy but honestly I'm nitpicking . It will stay in place and not fall out for those of you on the fence over this one particular subject . Again , Ill gladly deal with this due to the fact that I get a 9 hour battery life ! 3 ) Speaker is not adequate at all . However , I knew this ahead of time . With netbooks there are compromises and this is one I didn't mind . I use my headset and find that adequate if I need to listen to something . Ill have to test if I can hear the headset on an airplane flight . Hopefully I can . 4 ) Little con but the battery life is displayed as percentage and I can't seem to find it expressed anywhere in time . So far I've just had to guess based off my watch on usage rate . Its a little bit annoying but I'm getting used to it . Reasons why I got the lower model 210 over the 310 : Even though its only 50 dollars , I feel that having the fancy colors ( which I didn't prefer ) , bluetooth and a slightly nicer keyboard didn't warrant the extra money . I was on a budget for under $400 dollars which I easily did and still feel that I got the best netbook out there . I'm sure some of you out there will use bluetooth a lot , but frankly I don't need this computer to have that luxury . I need a computer to access the web and be able to send emails with bottom line . I will probably end up getting an external DVD drive in the future so I can watch movies . In the short term I plan to upgrade to 2GB ram as others have mentioned . With the price being so cheap , who can refuse ? ! Overall if you get this Netbook you will be very pleased . I truly feel after heavy research that the reasons above set it apart from the others for the time being . I'm sure in under a year there will be a newer , greater model , but for now this reins King . Side note , I ordered 1 day express delivery at 5pm eastern time and got my computer the next morning at 1230 Easter time all for under 22 dollars shipping . Total bill was $370.95 . Gotta love Amazon . . incredible service and the best bang for the buck . Had to wait one night . . thats it ! Unreal !
    • 032 4  Having researched netbooks since January 2009 , I had narrowed down my choice to Asus 1000HE due to battery life , since most netbook features are similar . Recently Asus released the 1005HA and I was certain that was going to be my next purchase since it was improved over the 1000HE . I decided to check out Acer ( blah ) , MSI ( blah ) , HP / Compaq ( blah ) , Samsung and Toshiba as well . My main requirement was a good size keyboard , solid build , and great battery life . Toshiba NB205 excelled at all my requirements . I read every review I could find and even have google alerts set to Toshiba NB205 . Office Depots have this netbook on display . Definitely visit your local store and try it out before you buy it . Then goto Best Buy to try out other selections and order it from Amazon.com . Some key points : 1 . Keyboard - great size , the keys are similar to the current gen apple laptops . I am typing this review on the NB205 so still getting used to it . The only strange thing is the ~ key sits to the left of the space bar instead of the ALT key . The ALT key is to the left of the ~ key . 2 . Build - VERY solidly built netbook . Does not feel flimsy like all the other ones I have seen . I have a Dell XPS 1530 which I thought had a super solid build , this Toshiba NB205 is just as solid . Construction and design are great . I did not like the glossy covers and fingerprint magnet designs of the other netbooks . NB205 has a matte cover and texture to it that does not attact ANY fingerprints . 3 . Battery life - Reviews tested well and better than the Asus 1000HE . Been using it for 1 hour and says 90% battery life after installing updates and downloading . 4 . Trackpad - VERY large and controls well . Glides smoothly . No dinky trackpads like other netbooks . Has 2 separate buttons instead of just one . The pad is slightly recessed so it's easy to find it by feel . The ONLY thing I dislike about the laptop is the 6 cell battery sticks out the back about .85 inches . As for colors , ALL of the NB205 have the silver keyboard , the color difference is only on the screen portion . I chose the Blue because I liked the color the best . The White I saw in store looked very close to the silver keyboard color . I thought about waiting for the ION , but the screens will be almost 12 and the battery life will be worse . Also , the cost difference . I don't need a HDMI output either .
    • 037 4  Update August 16 , 2009 I still really like this netbook and it is an almost perfect replacement to a super high-end laptop that it replaced . Now that I've been using it for nearly a month , here are some additional insights and observations : - I like the brown color much more than I thought I would . It's really an elegant , stylish netbook . - The laptop does get really hot . So hot , in fact , that after a few minutes , you have to place it on a pillow on your lap - it is way too hot to let set on your bare legs . - For some strange reason , a very slight electric shock emanates from the bottom of my netbook to my bare legs . I thought it was coming through the screws but can't prove that . This continues to happen , but placing netbook on a pillow first solves this problem . This is very strange . I've never been shocked by a laptop before . It's not a huge shock , but enough to make you jump up and ask what the . . . - this is undoubtably the best laptop keyboard I have ever used . The keys are layed out in an entirely logical , predictable way . This keyboard is fantastic . - yes , the trackpad does have a mind of its own sometimes - but I have minimized this problem by going into the settings . - battery life is great . I've never really used the battery up fully , but 6 hours using wireless internet continuously and it still had a fair amount of juice left . I did have the brightness set down to minimum . It could very well have 8 - 9 hours . - I really wish I could have more than 2 GB RAM . I have noticed a small but annoying system slowdown with many programs open , with 2 GB RAM . On the laptop this replaced , I had 3 GB RAM and a faster front side bus and the system never slowed down . Just something to improve for the next model . It's still a great netbook but I still give it only 4 stars . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This is a very good laptop . It feels solid and that it is well built , which is important . I have held and touched the Asus netbooks in stores and they are cute but don't feel as solidly built as this Toshiba . I opted for a color model which has a better keyboard and I think , is worth it because the keyboard is lighter ( easier to see the letters you're typing ) and easier to press ( more Mac style ) . I recommend additional RAM as well as turning off all system animations ( e.g . screen redraw , windows open / close , hid taskbar , etc . ) I haven't tested the battery life to its fullest but it does seem to drain quite slowly , which is good . And thank god Toshiba is using XP and not Vista ! I gave this item 4 stars for the following shortcomings : Max 2 GB RAM . I used to get 3 GB RAM as a minimum on all new systems . Since 2 GB is the max , I did buy the extra module but if you are a power user , you still might find 2 GB RAM too slow for you . 160 GB hard drive is decent , but why not 250 GB ? Data storage is so cheap System does get very hot on the bottom . This could be partly due to the extra RAM , but it is too hot to rest right on my lap . This is a continuous problem - not just a one-time thing . I agree with another owner that the left / right mouse buttons need to be moved up just a tad so they don't rest on the edge . When you are laying down using the netbook , things can get pressed accidentally ( but this doesn't happen very much so it's not a big detractor ) Other than those particular items , I am very pleased with it and I would recommend it to friends . I will be using this as a replacement for a Vista laptop that has crashed beyond boot up two months in a row ( I decided not to chance a third time and simply retired that laptop until the Vista replacement comes out ) .
    • 064 4  I'm on my 2nd unit , the first one had a bad power switch . I thought maybe I was missing something but when I went to Best Buy and played with their demo unit I realized my unit's power switch couldn't be depressed so I sent it back and now I'm playing with the replacement unit . First , you MUST turn the wireless function ON if you want to use it . It arrives with it turned off . This wasn't obvious to me and the quick start guide does not mention it at all . And , of course , there is no printed user's manual , so you have to find the pdf and search it for wireless . You have to press Fn + F8 to change the wireless mode ( on / off and I think something else ) . Not sure why they do this but hopefully this will save someone else some time . Also it doesn't support WPA2 only WPA so I had to change my settings on my router . Otherwise it was simple to set up . The screen is very glossy . IMO this is a bad trend that Apple started and now they are getting some bad feedback about this also . So be forewarned . The touchpad is ok but I would get a small mouse to use . The keyboard is kind of similar to my Apple Macbook Pro , not exactly great but functional . Overall , so far it seems fine for my use . Obviously something larger is better for lots of work but we are buying a netbook for its small size and weight ( otherwise I'd be carrying my MacBook Pro ) and be able to do basic things when on the go . It comes with some extra programs , like Norton , which I have to go around and uninstall . I have to admit that while I've been using PCs for a long time and only bought / used my first Apple in 2007 I forgot how annoying PCs can be ( at home I have the MacBook Pro and a desktop that is dual bootable with Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP that I seldom use ) . I'll have to browse the net and download the various free virus / firewall programs . My main reason for getting a netbook was to be able to travel and still do classwork for graduate classes I'm taking and this unit should be able to do that ( i.e . , connect to the internet , email , and basic Word / Excel / Powerpoint functions ) .
    • 065 4  I cannot express how absolutely terrible my experience with this netbook as been . As we speak , it is at Toshiba being fixed for the second time , and I am typing right now from an HP mini that I had to borrow . First week I had it , the main circuit board died on me . I was appalled that I had to pay for shipping to Toshiba , but did it just so I could get my netbook back on time before school started . I got it back , the defected part was replaced . . . and less than 2 months later , I have the same issue . I called , very irate , and they said they would pay for shipping . What they didn't say was they wouldn't pay for the stupid box you have to put it in . I called again , and was told I am not getting my money back for a box . That to escalate it , I would have to write a letter to Customer Relations manager . What the crap ? I explained that I really hope they actually fix the netbook this time because I am did not pay extra to have a superior netbook that spends more time being fixed than in my hands . I went for this netbook because it was environmentally friendly ( besides Samsung ) , and I had heard good things about Toshiba notebooks . Yeah , that was the old notebooks . Go google Customer relations manager Toshiba and see how many complaints there are now . Its something I should've done long ago . I own a Dell laptop and that has been the best service I have ever received from any computer company . And everyone knows they hear bad things about Dell products . So , please save a little green and go for perhaps a Samsung netbook or even the HP mini . I have been using the HP mini for a few days now and it's super fast , easy , and I absolutely love how small it is . The Toshiba netbook still was bigger than it !
    • 093 4  Mines actually shipped with Windows XP installed instead of Windows 7 Starter , which is what I preferred anyways . Did not need to upgrade the RAM to 2GB because I use XP and ran mostly firefox , microsoft office , itunes , videos , etc . If you're going to game , use photoshop , install windows 7 ultimate or other heavy apps then upgrade to 2GB RAM . Battery life on this netbook is ridiculously long . Definitely survives for up to 9 hours . I'm in class / on campus from 11 - 7 or 8 most days and I don't need to bring the charger ever . But the charger is also very light and small so it's not a burden to carry around . I really enjoy the chiclet keyboard - i dont hit the wrong key as much . Took about a week to get used to the keyboard ( fullsized which is rare on a netbook ) , but now I can type faster on this keyboard than my normal laptop ( dell xps ) . I can pretty much write down word for word what someone says ( great for taking notes ) with few typos , which I can't do on my dell keyboard without hitting the wrong key . Only negative is the audio speaker , which is on the bottom of teh laptop and basically nonexistent . But if you plug in speakers / headset it works fine . All in all this is a really good netbook . I would say better than asus . I've had it for about 2 months and haven't had any problems . Oh also the design is very cute ( way cuter than asus's pink one ) . I've gotten many many compliments on the look : )
    • 150 4  I bought this netbook to take on the road with me . My Dell laptop would run out of power in only two hours and I could not open it on an airplane if the seat in front of me was fully reclined . The netbook's battery lasts about nine hours as advertised . Moreover , it is so TINY , I can take it anywhere . Plus it is such a featherweight compared to the Dell , which is a real plus , especially during long walks while traveling ( like the Miami Airport ! ) . Plus it looks cool - I got the blue one and I got a lot of compliments on its appearance . There are only two downsides to my netbook . First , although the keys are better than some of its competitors , the keys are still quite small which leads to more mis-typed characters than usual . This is not a really big deal . Second , the speaker is terrible . I had read one review stating that the speaker was bad , but I guess I didn't full appreciate how bad it was . Think of it this way . It comes equipped with the sound quality of the speaker that might be placed in a wristwatch or a greeting card . Unbelievable . What were they thinking ? Fortunately , I use the thing mostly for travel , so I am wearing my Bose sound-canceling headphones already anyways . So I don't really have to use the speaker much . Other than that , I love my netbook .
    • 154 4  I have recently purchased this exact laptop via Amazon.com I'm going to cut to the chase and do a PRO and CON list . PRO 1 . The startup speed is pretty good for a mininotebook . It's actually faster than my full size VAIO notebook . 2 . Setting up the wireless was very easy . No more difficult than on any other computer . 3 . The build quality seems to be pretty good as far as laptops go 4 . The battery life is supposed to be excellent although I have only been using it w / the wall charger . 5 . Keyboard is a decent size considering how tiny the notebook is overall . . . some of the button placement I have to get used to though . * * 6 . Be sure to visit Toshiba's website because there are many updates available for this laptop . How much of a difference they make is questionable but they are there nonetheless . CONS 1 . The most annoying problem with this notebook is the TERRIBLE speakers . I thought my current laptop had terrible speakers but when I received this Toshiba notebook it made it look like a top of the line Bose audio system . The upsetting thing is that I really wanted to use this notebook to watch movies w / o headphones but the audio is so terrible that unless there is close to zero background noise you won't be able to head a damn thing ! If you are thinking of using this laptop primarily for watching movies you may want to select another laptop . The audio is just that bad . 2 . Other reviews on here mentioned how the track pad was rather finicky . I can start off by saying that I hate track pads to begin with and have always used mice but for an ultra portable laptop using a mouse just isn't practical so having a good track pad is pretty damn important . The actual size of the track pad is pretty large however it doesn't respond that well . Like some other people mentioned it stalls some times for a few seconds before it starts to move again . There is a an update for this problem but it really doesn't fix it enough to satisfy me . Overall here are my suggestions in regards to purchasing a mini laptop : 1 . Go to a large retail store like Best Buy and look at the various models and spend a few minutes checking them out . Use the track pad , type a bit , restart the computer and see how long it takes to boot up . I think getting hands on with these computers is key . These all basically have the same specs so it's going to be the small things that make the difference . 2 . I've noticed that the markup on these laptops really isn't that much so you may be able to buy them at a regular retail store for the same price that you can get them here on Amazon.com The only reason I got it here was because I used my Amazon Visa card and got $30 off my first purchase ( if you're an amazon buff like me you should definitely look into getting one . . . just remember to always pay your bill on time and just use it here on Amazon )
    • 178 4  I was looking for something small to be able to bring to school / coffee shops to do work . At first I bought the Asus Eee , but realized the keys were far too cramped and I prefer Windows XP to Windows 7 . This Toshiba netbook is MUCH better than the Asus because the keyboard is easier to type on and its more aesthetically pleasing . The matte silver finish keeps from seeing fingerprints , etc and I like the pearl white color of the exterior . Also the battery life is 1 - 2 hours longer than the Asus - - with 9 hours of battery life I can use it anywhere and everywhere and hardly have to bring the charger with me ! Also I read a lot of the reviews before buying this one and I disagree with the people who were complaining about the speakers . For such a small device the speakers are sufficient - - you can't expect it to have amazing sound quality . I can still watch / listen to youtube , etc just fine . Also the wireless internet speed is amazing - - it's even faster than my macbook . The only complaints I have so far are none of the netbook cases I've tried have fit so I'm going to have to order one online . Also it doesn't have microsoft office ( only microsoft works ) . It takes a little bit of time to adjust to the keyboard ( specifically the upper left side where the tab and #1 buttons are hard to reach ) . Other than that it's an awesome netbook !
    • 186 4  Can't say enough good things about this neat little computer . Small , stylish , light , functional , easy to use and easy to upgrade . Great battery capacity . Well engineered ! This one had Win XP installed and it is still heads above the newer versions of Windows ( We all know that Vista stinks and , yes , I have tried Win 7 ) . Why Microsoft can't just leave well enough alone is totally beyond me . Upgraded to 2GB of memory and a new 250GB 7200RPM hard disc and this little guy is now FAST . Added a new USB ported Lite-on DVD burner and it can do anything ( well , almost ) . Fine tuned the Windows display characteristics and there is nothing difficult about using the smaller screen . For those who complain about the built-in mouse pad performance etc . , if you will bother to read the user's manual ( Yes it is there on the hard disc ) , it will walk you through fine tuning such problems . This is the greatest user manual I have ever seen ( or imagined ) for any computer . I have been a devoted user of HP laptops for years and been through 2 of them , but now that I have had this experience with Toshiba , I think it's time to switch . Final thought ; I started the quest for a netbook while hungering for one of the newer ebook readers on the market ( I am a voracious reader ) . The prices on these things was blowing me down for a small screen size and it occurred to me one day that a netbook was still small ( though , not quite as small as the ebook readers ) , and for the price ( or less in some cases ) , could do just as well ( with a larger screen ) and also be a computer with further word processing capabilities . With MS Word , almost any ebook format can be converted and read as a document . Well , It works ! While not quite as small as an ebook reader , this little guy is keeping me quite content . With fine tuning of MS Word , it is like using a reader with a larger screen and fonts and font sizes are customizable and book storage is tremendous . Also , you can go to the ' Project Gutenberg ' web site ( and others ) and download free classics all day long ! Think about it ! By the way , Amazon has the best deals around for these netbooks !
    • 208 4  This is a great computer in many ways - sleek , sexy , good battery life , nice keyboard and the very manly name Toshiba written boldly across the case to make it clear that you never even considered a wimpy , pink netbook . It's good for surfing the web , checking your email and watching . AVI movies or listening to music . If you need something for this type of light usage then this is the perfect computer for you . Unfortunately , it's not quite what I expected . I have an older 1.2Ghz laptop with 384Mb of RAM and had many problems using it to watch Hulu or YouTube videos because the video would stutter or freeze , usually at full screen , so I thought this netbook would be better at it , especially with the added 1Gb of RAM ( 2Gb total ) . . . nope , it's actually worse . My laptop usually plays non-maximized web videos flawlessly , but not so with the netbook . The netbook is worse with smaller videos than my laptop is with them maximized . The Toshiba plays stored . AVIs perfectly , though , and the image is beautiful , so this may not be an issue for you . The built-in speakers are all right , but the sound quality and volume are excellent with headphones or ear buds . I haven't tried a whole host of software on it yet , but did find that Bejeweled 2 Deluxe won't play , apparently due to the shortened screen . The processor speed seems more than adequate for most applications , so don't be afraid of running your favorites on this netbook . Another thing , if you use Firefox you can add the Classic Compact 3.2.2 theme to maximize screen space , which helps a bit . One other niggle is that it doesn't have a volume dial on the side or front of the case , which my laptop does ; this may not seem like a big deal , but the volume keys feel like every other key in the dark , so you have to use the software volume controls - much more cumbersome than it should be , but in fairness , my wife's very large and very new HP laptop doesn't have a volume dial either . If you keep your expectations realistic this is an excellent computer for travel ( even if it's just to the couch ) or as an occasional laptop substitute , but if you're thinking of it as a full laptop substitute , think again .

  • 041 4  Not sure what else I can say that's much different than what's already been said , but I felt compelled to give my 2 cents as well . I , like many others , have looked at and researched netbooks for the past couple months . The Toshiba NB205 is easily the best looking netbook with the textured lid ( comes in colors of blue , pink , white and brown ) , along with the beautiful chiclet keyboard and overall sleek and stylish lines it has . Outside of the standard specs of 1GB RAM , 160GB hard drive , 10.1 screen and Windows XP that you'll find on many other netbooks , the NB205 has a few unique things that differentiates it . First off , it comes equipped with USB Sleep and Charge . This allows you to charge your peripherals even when your NB205 isn't even turned on . . . comes in very handy , especially during travel . Also , it comes standard with a hard drive accelerometer , which detects when your netbook is about to drop , lifts the heads of the hard drive up and protects your hard drive from any damage . I have yet to see this on any other netbook . The battery life is very impressive as well . To receive up to 9 hours ( a full day ) of computing without being teathered to anything . . . that's insane ! You combine all these features with its incredible looks and affordable pricing . . . . getting this netbook is absolutely a no brainer .
    • 048 4  I absolutely love this netbook ! The size is perfect and the quality is terrific ! After an extensive research to find the best netbook to supplement my aging laptop , I was immediately sold on this one ( which I am using to type this review ) . After reading every review I could possibly find , I rushed to my local Office Depot to play with this beauty . For me , the best quality is the keyboard . The keys are spaced perfectly and they are also the perfect size with a smooth texture to them . The power button also encompass a light that can be used as a lamp when using the netbook in the dark . The light allows you to see all the keys on the keyboard . The webcam is great . I haven't actually used it yet , but I have activated it to see how clear the reception is . The HDD's ability to capture and protect the hard drive from destruction if it is dropped or bumped too hard , is another amazing feature . More importantly , this baby fits right into my purse . In essence , I have only had this netbook for 5 days and haven't had any problems with it thus far . I am most definitely satisfied with this netbook !
    • 074 4  I did quite a bit of research in regards to netbooks , and found the Toshiba to be the best on paper . I have specific evidence now that proves my research to be on point . I have found no evidence of some of the complaints I have read , including , faulty touchpad , ( not a problem ) , or sound quality , ( excellent ) , all in all a wonderful product . . . . truly the best of the rest ! !
    • 143 4  I love this laptop ! I actually sold my 17 Toshiba laptop because it was so heavy ( around 9 lbs ) to carry around school and since I already have a desktop at home , this netbook is perfect for taking it to school to taking notes . It's really cute too , I like the look of it . Also , I really like the feel of the keyboard , it's not the cheap kind , it's like the Macbook keyboard . I really recommend it if you need it for school . The only thing that I would want is a CD / DVD drive but I guess that's the reason it's so light , I'll need to buy an external one to download Microsoft Office . Overall , it's a good product .
    • 184 4  The notebook is light but seems well made . The supplied software is utilitarian . The lack of a DVD drive seems ok until you find yourself wanting to load programs or watch a movie . I bought an external DVD drive which runs off the powered USB . Works perfectly . The screen is clear , but I find it a little small to fit my surfing preferences . Being used to a 22 inch monitor creates some need for adjustment . The keyboard is good but I had to disable the ' double tap ' feature of the scroll pad because it was causing the cursor to jump all over my email and Word documents . Nasty inconvenience , but once I found a fix on the web that little glitch is history . Overall , if you don't mind the smallish screen this is a nice little machine . The best thing about it is its battery life . I own its big brother , which I love , but the one hour battery life almost makes is a desktop .
    • 212 4  This laptop has worked great for me . The only problem that I have with it is that I have somewhat large hands so when Im typing sometimes my hands touch the touchpad and it moves the cursor on the screen . Otherwise , its a great buy . Does not last the 9 hours it advertises but does last a pretty long time without charging ( for me it was 7 hours )

  • 080 4  The Toshiba Mini NB205 is a great little netbook that truly is as advertised . Long battery life , easy to type on keyboard , great quality and just an over all great product . I held off for a long time getting one as I didn't think there was any way they could live up to the hype , have a good battery life or be very useful as a small laptop . Just didn't seem possible to be all that and be so small and portable . Well let me tell you , this is as good as a lot of laptops I have used in my time and is just perfect for so many reasons . First off the quality of the product is just great . You will like the feel of the overall surface of it , it's not shiny smooth plastic but seems to have a course yet comfortable feel to it . The mouse fingerpad is larger than I thought it would be and easy to to move the cursor with . I will most likely get a small mouse for it eventually but that's for my own need for one . The unit works fine with what it came with . The screen as well is very clear and vibrant . You can adjust the brightness and settings quite easily with the Toshiba settings as well as any other settings like power management , sleep mode and battery life modifications . Setting up the wifi is only difficult if you go about it as if you were using a desktop . Everything on the NB205 has to be done through the Toshiba included control panel selections and not the default window based ones . So you use the Toshiba network connections option to set up your wifi settings and you are good to go . If you try to go about it the usual way with the Windows Network Connections option you will start to really get frustrated as it wasn't meant to be used for this mini . Everything is nice and easy if you use the included Toshiba based programs . Took me awhile to figure out but once I realized that was the case its been smooth sailing ever since . Anywhere I am I go right to that option and am able to pick up signals easily and add them quickly to the mini and continue on with where I was . Load times are great too . Once you push the very easy to find and nicely centered power button in the center of the mini , you will be in windows XP in no time . I've had a few programs open at once and the delays were barely noticeable . It isn't as fast and reactive as a regular laptop or desktop will be but for a computer this size it's greater than expected . Lastly included with the NB205 is a webcam that is integrated right into the top of the inside of the screen . My family used Skype a few times with it already and each time it worked quite well . A few lag issues due to some wifi break ups but the camera and images were great for such a little product . The real drawbacks to this great netbook are . . Firstly the speaker is horrible . If you are going to be going on sites like Youtube or listen to mp3s on this , you must get a usb speaker attachment or rely on headphones . The speaker is very little and hidden under the bottom of it and even on full volume you will struggle to hear things with it . With speakers or headphones though it sounds perfect . Also like most if not all netbooks , it will get hot very quickly under it . A netbook cooler is a must if you are going to be using this on long trips or for long periods of time . Not to mention that it will get hot while using it on your lap , it also can't be good to have the computer that hot for long periods of time . Those were the only major things to note that I found with this . I haven't fully tested it by putting on many applications or programs but of course this isn't a gaming computer . I'm sure some programs will work but don't get this if you want a computer to play all your high level games on as you will be very disappointed when they don't work at all . I would say get the speaker / headphones , a mouse , the cooling pad and maybe even a USB DVD drive if you want to get the full potential out of this fine little netbook . None of those things are needed and they will add quite a lot more to the cost you are putting into the netbook but if you plan on using this for more than just trips or in class you may as well get that little extra something that a travel computer can give you . This is a must get if you aren't sure what netbook to get . This will do everything you need and more and is very reasonably priced . I can't recommend it enough . Results and satisfaction will vary but so far I have been quite pleased and don't see that changing any time soon . The battery life alone makes this a great product .
    • 002 4  Went out last night to look at netbooks for the hundredth time . After looking at the same ole boring models , plastic , cramped , creaky , cheap feeling , I came across this beauty . A very sturdy model , well made , and I was hooked on first site . After thinking that it was just an visual thing , I started to type away on the keyboard and what a thing of beautiful engineering . The Home , End , PrtSc keys are all in the proper place at the upper right , some other netbook keyboards required the use of the Fn key to use those keys ( this model includes separate page up and down keys too ) . The screen is nice and bright , I was able to compare it side by side with a Dell mini and the Eee 1005HA and the Toshiba came out on top ! ! ! Lastly , the touch pad is top of the line . It is not too small and there are separate L and R buttons located on the bottom of the pad like a normal laptop . As you know some other manufacturers make one rectangular button on the bottom or one on each side of the track pad . . . this one is , again , top notch . For the money , you can not go wrong with purchasing this laptop . Great feel , sturdy build , awesome battery life , and you just feel good using it : ) Hopefully this helps in your decision concerning a netbook purchase .
    • 003 4  I just got my NB205 last Saturday . So these are initial , early impressions . #1 ( terrible first impression ) : It took all afternoon and into the evening to get the unit talking to my LinkSys WRT54G wireless router . The wireless communication was connected , the router had assigned an IP address , but the NB205 refused to get it . It sat at acquiring IP address until it timed out . I have a static IP block reserved on my router , so I gave the NB205 a static IP address and filled in the gateway and DNS server IPs , and it * still * wouldn't talk . In technical parlance , it wasn't just a problem with ARP - the entire transport layer simply wasn't working . A wired connection to the router worked fine . But that wasn't a workaround that I was prepared to accept . I researched on the Web and found that various Toshiba models seem to have a lot of trouble with wireless , and that there are probably a hundred different things that people said finally got theirs working . What finally worked for me was to turn off WEP security on both the router and the NB205 . That immediately got them talking , at the expense of breaking all of my other wireless links ( two computers and a Wii ) . Then I turned WEP back on , and they stayed talking . No problems since . EDITED : after over two months , still no problem . It was just the one-time startup . #2 ( good ) : The battery life is pretty danged long . Maybe not the claimed nine hours , but seven or eight ( with WiFi turned off and using power-saver profile ) . I suspect that a good part of that comes from using an e-IPS display . #3 ( bad but expected ) : The manual is provided on the hard drive , not in print . The manual is disorganized and mostly useless . This seems to be par for the course for modern computers . #4 ( very slightly bad ) : The manual says that if you shut the unit down by closing the lid ( sleep mode , hibernate , or whatever ) that when you open the lid it'll start back up . It doesn't . You have to press the power button . EDITED : It will come back on automatically if you've left it plugged into AC power the whole time . It doesn't if it's unplugged , which for me is pretty much always . #5 EDITED : ( very annoying until I figured out what was wrong ) : I had given up on using Sleep / Standby mode because about half of the time when I turned it back on the unit completely rebooted . Hibernate mode always seemed to work . The problem turned out to be that one of the latches for the battery pack wasn't locked , and the netbook would lose power if the unit was lifted in a way that tried to separate the pack from the main unit . So it was my own error , but I learned to pay attention to those latches . #6 ( generally good ) : I got this netbook specifically for writing . The keyboard seemed to be the best available in the netbook form factor , and I'm finding the keyboard to be quite usable for extended typing sessions . A couple of keys got relocated into funky positions , though . ( Maybe other netbook keyboards do the same , I don't know . ) #7 ( good ) : The touchpad is the first one that I've found to be actually usable . #8 ( mildly concerning ) : I had to turn off the vibration alerts because every time I click the touchpad , it sets off the vibration detector . So . . . good keyboard , good touchpad , good display , good battery life . That's what I needed , and it's working out well . But I have collected some scars from the rough edges of getting it set up and the power on / off arrangements . FIVE DAYS LATER ( an update ) : I'm really enjoying this little guy . I finally got everything configured the way that I want , and I love working with it . My only day-to-day complaint is a silly one : I sometimes write while lying down , with my legs bent and the netbook propped against my legs , and in that position the clicker buttons on the touchpad rest against my belly and tend to click when I don't want them to . : - ) I've learned to use Fn-F9 to disable the touchpad while I'm doing that .
    • 004 4  Well I have been doing research and playing with netbooks for several months now . I had to replace my aging 5 year old HP that was recently stolen . I wanted something with a long battery life and was extremely small and portable . I rolled down to my local best buy on July 4th and I was hell bent on getting the ASUS 1000HE . I found out that the model they sold only had the Atom 270 , but I wanted the Black Tie warranty so I was going to live with that . However , when I got there , they did not have any in stock . In fact , the only netbook that had the Atom 280 was the Toshiba NB 205 . I never even heard of it . I found out that they were out of stock so I ran home and called until I found a best buy that had one in stock . I read some reviews but they were dismal at best . After playing with it non stop for 3 days , here is what I like about it . 1 . The Case is much better looking than any other netbook out there . It even looks nicer than the Mac Books . It is much nicer than the ASUS 1000HE . 2 . The screen is very crisp and bright . It also has 8 levels of brightness . 3 . The Keys are very nice to type on and are spaced out well . 4 . The touchpad is responsive and the left and right keys are placed like a normal laptop . 5 . Although it took some time to get the wireless working , it hooks up faster than my other 2 laptops . 6 . It runs XP so with some minor tweaks , it ran just as fast as my other laptops . 7 . It plays MP4 movies / videos very well . 8 . It handles office applications like Excel and Access very well . 9 . I was able to watch 3 full length MP4 movies and still have over half the battery life left . 10 . It boots up fast and it has no problem with multiple windows . 11 . Netflix live stream videos work great on it . 12 . 3 USB Ports ( one can charge while it is off ) , 1 VGA Port , 1 RJ45 Port , and a SD Port . Now on to what I don't like . 1 . The back of the battery does stick out another inch but it does seem to act like a bumper . I bought a Targus bag with a handle and it fits perfectly . 2 . The speaker is very inadequate , the earphone jack works well . 3 . The Wireless setup was a pain . I wish it had a dedicated switch . 4 . The instruction manual is almost useless . 5 . Can't really adjust the screen resolution ( although the stock settings are fine ) . All in all it was a pleasant surprise and I am glad I waited to buy .
    • 020 4  This is a very nice and very neat machine . At this time ( July 2009 ) it is clearly the most powerful Netbook I could locate . The battery life is wonderful . They advertise 9 hour , and I think it is possible . I used mine nearly all day from 7 : 30AM until 6 : 30PM , and still had 37% battery life left . The full keyboard is a major plus . It did not come with full instructions , and being an Apple Computer guy ( Apple doesn't make a netbook or I would have purchased one ) , I found the entire setup confusing . There was a simple set of instructions to get it going , and major books on warranty and safety , but no full instruction manual or even notice that one existed . After , 2 days of frustration and one call to customer service , I found the instructions located deep in a folder on the hard drive . They could have at least either printed them out , or told you where to find them on their little setup sheet . The machine came with the wireless turned off manually on the keyboard . I had to call customer service to find out how to turn it on , and it was not easy to figure out all the triple function keys without instructions . I had one major crash the first week I had it , and I'm not sure it was the computer's fault . I tried to erase various startup programs ( it came with a lot of B.S . adds ) and during that effort , I erased the touch pad's control center . Bummer , I had to do a complete system reinstall . But , the Toshiba customer service was great . They really worked with me to solve the problem . That is one of the best features of this machine is Toshiba Customer Service . They are located in the Philippines , and speak English very well . They are almost as good as Apple Computer customer service . I didn't buy the HP , because I saw several of their machines at Costco and they were poorly made . Also , to say HP has bad customer service is like telling Custer there are just one or two indians over the hill . They are AWFUL ! ! ! ! ! ! ! HP has the worse customer service on the planet ! Never buy anthing from them if you ever expect to have to call them . If you hate someone give them an HP computer , or anything else these bums make . Then stand back and watch the laughs . Now that I have the Toshiba properly setup , it works great . I purchased Microsoft Office and updated Adobe Acrobat . I also installed Norton 360 and AOL : all run with no problems . The Toshiba does not run Vista , but will run the new Windows 7 coming out later this year . The screen is very bright and the black one looks like it's made of carbon fiber : it's also $50 cheaper than the other colors . I got the Samsung DVD portable drive Model SE-S084 , and it works great . It does use two USB ports to drive the thing , as it requires no other power source . A little hassel , but no real problem in order to eliminate power cords . The touch pad works well ( but no two finger scrolling like on a Mac ) , and it has many available options . The machine is a hit around my office and draws a crowd when I pull it out . I highly recommend this machine , at least until Apple releases a Netbook of their own : probably at the September Apple Convention where I expect to see Steve Jobs show up and announce some new killer machines .
    • 022 4  I picked up the Toshiba NB205 over the weekend . I plan to use it primarily for Gmail , Facebook , blogging , and some light web design work . This is the first netbook that I can actually type on and actually use the trackpad . Most netbook keyboards feel so cramped that I can't type , however that's not the case here . As soon as I got the netbook home , I created a bootable USB flash drive to install the Windows 7 RC . Toshiba has drivers for Windows 7 , so I was able to get the key components installed without any trouble . The only hiccup was they don't have a Windows 7 driver for the ALPS touchpad on the NB205 . This was a MAJOR PROBLEM for me because without that driver , I couldn't disable the ' tap to click ' feature of the touchpad . My palms frequently brush against the touchpad as I'm typing sending the cursor all over the place , so without a driver , I wasn't going to be able to run Windows 7 RC . Realizing that most Windows Vista drivers work in Windows 7 , I searched the Toshiba site for an ALPS driver from another laptop for Windows Vista . I checked a few of their other laptops , and quickly found a driver that I was able to successfully load on Windows 7 . Once installed , all of the touchpad settings became available under the Advanced tab of the Mouse control panel , and I was able to disable tap to click . The other Windows 7 related hiccup was that whenever I booted up the NB205 , my Netgear N Wireless Router ( WRN2000 ) would reset / reboot multiple times . Eventually the wireless router would stop rebooting and everything would work , but then eventually it would start rebooting again randomly . To fix this issue , I downloaded and installed Toshiba's Windows 7 Configfree driver . Using that utility to configure my wireless settings , instead of doing it manually though Windows 7 ' s built in feature , everything works and the router no longer reboots . I have absolutely no idea what the difference is , but I'm just happy it's working . Those issues were Windows 7 related , so don't let them scare you . I only share my experiences in case anyone else wants to try Windows 7 and needs to know how I resolved them . Also remember that Windows 7 hasn't officially been released yet . I'm hopeful that since Toshiba has beta Windows 7 drivers available already for the NB205 , that they'll resolve these issues with better drivers once Windows 7 is officially released . As for the netbook itself , here's my pros and cons : PROS * Usable keyboard ! * Usable trackpad ! * Bright / readable display ( I run it at 30% brightness without any issues ) * Descent performance for a netbook . It runs Windows 7 just fine . * The battery lasts forever . Even with installing several apps and rebooting a few times tonight , I'm still on pace for 8 hours before needing to charge ! * Extremely lightweight . * Bluetooth works great connected to my Blackberry for mobile broadband internet access . CONS * It gets warm after awhile . Not the scalding 2nd degree burn you'll get from some laptop , but still it's warm . * It's a netbook . . . performance isn't as good as similarly priced laptops . That's the trade-off getting a netbook vs . a regular laptop . * Can't play HD video from Youtube . ( Although regular video is completely fine . ) * The vertical resolution of 600 pixels cuts off some larger dialog boxes that can't be resized , so you can't easily see or click on the SAVE / OK / CANCEL buttons . * No free upgrade to Windows 7 , which really isn't Toshiba's fault because Microsoft's free upgrade program requires a $499 minimum purchase . Still , if you want Windows 7 when it's officially released later this fall , you'll have to pay for it if you buy the NB205 . Overall , I'm very happy I purchased the Toshiba NB205 . Hopefully I stay happy with it over time , and so far so good . * * * * * * * * * * UPDATE : Turns out the issue with my wireless router rebooting wasn't caused by Windows 7 after all . Apparently it was a compatibility issue between the wireless card in the Toshiba and the Netgear router . Last week I picked up a Linksys WRT110 N Wireless router and no longer have any issues whatsoever . I also installed the RTM version of Windows 7 Ultimate 32 - bit that came out last week . I don't see any major improvements in performance on the unit compared to the RC version of Windows 7 , but I'm not seeing any new problems either , so that's good news . Finally I noticed that some people are complaining about the ALPS trackpad in the NB205 not working well . I have experienced some slight hiccups or jitters in the cursor movement if the unit is under high CPU load . Although it's nothing that hinders my work . ( I didn't buy a netbook for top-notch precision mousing . ) Also my trackpad works fine all the way to all of its edges . No part of the trackpad is unresponsive , and scrolling works fine too . Perhaps loading the ALPS Vista driver has helped ? Regardless , when I'm sitting at a desk or table , I pull out my Logitech VX Nano mouse . Even when I'm using my $2000 HP Elitebook laptop from work , I still pull out my Logitech mouse because it's better . So yes , an external mouse will work better . You might have an occassional stutter on the trackpad under heavy use , but unless you need to have 100% precision cursor control at all times , I don't see any major issues here . ( My 2 cents anyways . . . ) I still like the unit . On a recent weekend trip out-of-state , it was awesome to pack a laptop so lightly , and have an ultra-portable unit to get Internet access in the van from the Blackberry !
    • 023 4  I've been fooling with microcomputers for 25 years , and I am astounded by the value and power packed into these little Netbooks for $400 or less . These are real computers for the price of a gadget . The Toshiba NB 205 I bought will do everything I want - - including word processing , spreadsheets , Web Browsing , e-mail , even decent photo editing . And I've been getting 6 hours of battery life without tweaking any low power settings . These are really breakthrough machines in terms of usability and luggability . I won't bother you with details you can find in other reviews . I bought the Toshiba for two reasons . The first was a keyboard I could actually use ( I'm an editor and touch typist , so a keyboard that isn't big enough for my clumsy fingers is a non-starter ) . I'm not normally a fan of chiclet keyboards , but after trying this one , I realized that that it makes the most of the limited space with a design that encourages precision without cramping your fingers . It's hard to explain this precisely , but the bottom line is that after a few minutes with it , I found myself making fewer errors than I did with other machines in the class . Still , I realize that keyboards and screens are largely matters of personal preference . Also , having spent some years supporting reporters on the road , I concluded that the laptops least likely to fail were IBMs ( the original ) and Toshibas . That said , there are a couple of design and execution problems that keep me from awarding the NB 205 very top marks . One is that I use a mouse with a portable computer everywhere but on a plane ( where I rarely use them anyway because there isn't much room for them in the back where I fly ) . The Toshiba's power supply cord plugs directly into a port on the right side of the computer at 2 / 3 of the way back . It sticks out a couple of inches , making it very difficult to use the mouse normally . From a design standpoint , there are two solutions to this . One is to have the power supply cord plug into the left side of the machine , elminating the problem for 90 percent of the world . Unfortunately , Toshiba couldn't plug the pwoer cord it into the back of the unit because it has an extra-large , heavy-duty hinge back there , a useful feature . The other possiblity is a power cord with an 90 - degree adapter on the end , which I've seen on other PCs . That would free up a path for the mouse . Another issue ( and I was obviously unable to test all the competitiors ) is the visibility of the screen outside . Even with the brightness turned up all the way , the image fades considerably outdoors , even in open shade . Still , my wife and I love the little machine and keep it upstairs next to the TV , where until now we've been reading e-mail and settling arguments by Web browsing with an iPod Touch . The Netbook really ups the ante here .
    • 027 4  I'm a pretty picky person when it comes to computers and computer parts , so it surprised me greatly that there was very little about this netbook that I could pick apart . I had planned to install Linux on the netbook when I bought it , so I expected to be typing a lot . Typing on this netbook's keyboard feels almost as natural as typing on a regular desktop keyboard . Most of the keys are full sized ( letters , numbers , shift , enter ) . The relatively few exceptions to that are completely manageable in my opinion ( function keys , tab , caps lock , arrows , page up and down , home , end , esc ) . The monitor looks at least as good as just about any other netbook around . The case has a solid feel and the chic-let keys respond well and are nicely spaced so accidental key presses are rare ( not something a lot of other netbooks can claim ) . The touch pad is very responsive and I like that there are 2 separate buttons for mouse clicks , unlike some other netbooks which have a single rocker button which only allows you to do a left OR right click . The 3 USB ports are very nice as I like to use a mouse when I'm at home and I usually have my thumb drive plugged in , so I have a spare port for an external optical drive or whatever else may come up . Before I switched over to Linux , the installed Windows XP system seemed to perform as well as I've seen on a desktop . Playing videos , surfing the web , taking photos and video were all smooth and nothing seemed bogged down by lack of horsepower or system resources . As far as battery life , I haven't done any rigorous testing , but I'm getting at least 6 hours of use on a full charge and with the wireless on all the time and the monitor backlighting on full . I suspect most people will get far more than that with the default settings . The only real reason that I rated this product 4 stars instead of 5 is that the system backup / restore paradigm seems to have been poorly thought out . I guess there is a restore partition on the harddrive which is common on netbooks . There is also software installed which allows you to backup the system and your applications to a DVD if you have a USB DVD burner . The backup DVDs created with this software are bootable and appear to be able to restore the system onto a blank harddrive . However , there were no installation / recovery disks included in the packaging , so if your harddrive died and you failed to make a backup of the system prior , I don't know how you would get the netbook working again short of sending it back to the manufacturer . My advice to anyone buying this netbook is to make a backup of the system to a DVD ( actually 2 DVDs ) when you first get it and hold onto those disks like your life depended on it . To anyone who wants to buy a netbook and is thinking about this model , stop thinking about it and buy this model . At the very least , any annoyances you would have with this netbook you would also find on other netbooks , trust me . The keyboard alone would be enough to say this is better than anything else out there currently . But , as I stated earlier , there is far more than just one reason that this model is superior to others .
    • 029 4  I have owned and used a Toshiba NB205 for two months . It has functioned as my primary computer . Strengths : - - excellent screen , keyboard , touchpad - good Linux support - its RAM is easy to upgrade - plenty of sockets ( 3xUSB , Ethernet , mic , earphones , VGA ) - capacious hard disk - informative lights on the front of the frame ( power , on / off , charging , WiFi ) - cost : $400 - the battery life is surprisingly good ( over six hours , according to my experience ) - the accelerometer shuts down the hard disk if you jog the laptop ( Windows only ) Weaknesses : - - no Linux support for the accelerometer - no DVI support ( OK , I'm just being picky ) That's about it . I've gone through an Asus Eee 700 and a 900 . I'm glad I chose the Tosh instead of an Eee 1000 .
    • 031 4  I bought this mini netbook for my daughter who is going to college in the fall . I had planned on buying her a Toshiba Satellite laptop because I own one and is very happy with it . But it is quite heavy even at 5 lbs plus the batteries ( I have 2 since they don't last very long ) , the adapter , and the mouse , to be lugging around campus . Since these netbooks are all the rage , I checked them out and I found the Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 fits her needs but the biggest advantage is the portability . She'll surely be carrying textbooks and this netbook is so thin and small that it could even fit into a small tote bag . The battery life is extra long - she's used it for more than 9 hours without recharging . It has extra USB ports she uses to charge her MP3 player and her cell phone . The keys are the same size as a standard laptop and not cramped like the other netbooks . The screen is clear and colors vibrant . The only thing that is lacking is the speakers , which the bigger Toshibas are excellent for , but one can't really expect that in a small computer like this . But if you have excellent earphones , even the good bud earphones , the sound quality is really good . Since netbooks don't come with CD-rom drives , installing programs from CDs is not possible unless it's copied to an USB drive . You can also purchase a portable disk drive and attach it to the netbook . Some people complained about the battery sticking out in the back but it's so negligible that my daughter doesn't mind it at all . We also did not have any problem logging on to our wireless network . I would definitely recommend this netbook as a best buy .
    • 034 4  Let me start out by saying the computer is great . Battery life was fantastic , screen was great , ran fast and was by far the best netbook Ive gotten to use / own . Unfortunately my first one came with an issue where it would not recognize the ac cord unless it was turned off . Then it would charge the battery , and then when turned on would only run on battery . Toshiba was stumped - back it went to Amazon ( Thank goodness for Amazon's great customer service policy ) . Second one came . The keyboard was messed up . Mostly a few keys stuck , would not pop up , random repeated . Also , I had the toshiba curser hop - If you own a toshiba , this is really nothing new , but more annoying and shouldnt happen . Sent it back . Amazon decided to refund me instead of trying a 3rd ( I was willing ) , but now Im wondering if its worth ordering the next model up or not . . . Maybe Im asus bound . Sorry toshiba - was a great netbook if it worked .
    • 035 4  I am a netbook GEEK . I have owned and used the following netbooks over the last 1.5 years : Lenovo s10 HP mini Dell mini Asus 1000 , 1005 , and 1008 and now Toshiba NB205 - 311 I can tell you that simply stated , the Toshiba wipes them all out . I'd say that the Asus 1008 is probably the best LOOKING netbook I have used , but here is what makes the Toshiba the clear cut winner : Keyboard . I am a touch typist and the keys on this machine are the best I have ever seen on a netbook to date . Raised up and separated nicely , they are responsive and almost feel as nice if not as good as a macbook . The trackpad , while a little hypersensitive , is large and I love it . . . the best of the best . The battery life is excellent . I will say that my Asus 1005 was probably SLIGHTLY better . I just took a cross country flight from Providence RI to San Fran and watched 7 episodes of Season 1 , Supernatural , running constantly with Wifi turned off . I still , after 6 hours , had 28% battery life , and I had the screen brightness cranked all the way up . The power modes allow you to select DVD playback as well . With Wifi , BT , and unplugged with medium power settings , a lot of web browsing , I have gotten 8.25 hours of life . I am a POWER USER , so at times , when I am just using Office or checking email , as well as lighter web surfing , I'm getting more like 9 hours . Simply stated , excellent battery life . WIFI is simple and easy . BT a snap . Excellent power saving modes . I cannot , however , stop raving about the keyboard . It's fantastic . The ONLY smaller negative is that the screen seems a little washed out in colors when the screen is not tilted back at a 45 degree angle . You have to push it back a little and it will be great . Just a small detail . If you are considering one of these now , I think they are offering it with Windows 7 , so I'd be willing to say it'll be even better with that new software as well . NO ONE has come out with a netbook at this price point that comes close to this . Well , Asus 1008 is about as beautiful a machine as you can ask for . . . however , battery life is only 4 - 4.5 hours . The 1005 is also good , but a little heavier , so because of that , and the fact the keyboard on the Toshiba is just great , The NB205 is the way to go . EDIT ON REVIEW - UPDATE AFTER 2.5 MONTHS USE ( Nov 9th ) : As I mentioned before , this my 4th netbook , as I receive them every so often from work . Thus far , I can still say it's my favorite in terms of total performance . The keyboard , again , is the real winner , and the battery life is one of the best I have ever had . I am averaging , with Wifi on almost constantly , medium power settings , and medium web surfing and heavy office OS use , as well as medium video playback , I'm getting more than 8 hours of battery life . HERE IS THE ONE BIG ISSUE FOR ME : Track pad sensitivity . One of the pluses here is the fact the trackpad is very big and easy to scroll with . However , I find myself hitting the trackpad constantly , shrinking my Outlook windows or typing in the middle of some paragraph I had already started . That part is really annoying me now . Having to constantly disable the trackpad can be a pain , but I have learned to get used to it . I'm going to try the new Asus T91 tablet with Windows 7 Premium to see how I like that . However , given all the of the systems I have owned , again , nothing beats this particular machine . For the record , the WHITE color listed here is NOT the bright white I have come to expect . It's more of an off white , so if you are into style , while I find the cover to be very stylish , and get a lot of compliments , it's not BRIGHT WHITE . Again , highly recommend this to anyone wanting to take the leap of a netbook .
    • 038 4  I researched netbooks to death before I bought my NB205 . I am very pleased . It just exudes quality . It has no problem playing Youtube videos or any other standard definition videos you will find on the net . Many have rightfully complained about the low volume in the unit . Toshiba has posted a new Realtek audio driver on their support site which does boost volume somewhat . Toshiba has also installed a cool little utility which makes it easy to locate and connect to wireless networks . It's cool to travel in a populated area ( as a passenger ) and view the constellation of wireless networks swirling around you .
    • 042 4  Pros : long battery life attractive slim metallic design of chasis and keyboard attractive lid ( I tried the brown version ) not prone to fingerprints island keyboard very comfortable for typing compact size Cons : horrible Alps trackpad or driver speaker so weak it's useless screen bazel is too wide , looks like glued carton and IS glued carton ! ! ! battery protrudes horizontally on the back ( that's not too bad though ) bottom gets unusually warm for an Intel Atom processor even at idle 10 screen makes text appear too tiny - increasing the DPI to 110% helps webcamera is low quality - grainy and colors significantly off towards bluish some will find that the white and blue lids look too plastic and cheap , I really like the brown version the best When I unpacked it , I almost took the bazel off with the stickers . Why make such a cool overall design and then slap a wide carton bazel on it ? ? ? ? What happened to the ' more energy efficient ' Atom ? My guess is that either the fan doesn't cool well since they wanted to keep the noise down or there is some heating going on with the RAM since exactly that side of the netbok gets warm . The deal braker for me was the Alps trackpad . Turns out bigger is NOT always better LOL and I can't understand how neither Laptop magazine nor any of the reviews here noticed that . If you Google NB205 trackpad problems you will find a whole thread on a laptop forum about the trackpad . Even at maximum sensitivity , 0.25 of the edges do not respond at all , it's like the actual pad is smaller than the size etched on the chasis . The scrolling works only if you increase the thickness of the scroll strip . The momentum function , which is my favorite with Synaptics rackpads , doesn't work the same way with Alps and is practically useless so I turned it off . The mouse cursor stutters unexplicably all the time or all of sudden doesn't respond to the trackpad . If you plan on using the netbook a lot , you will need an usb mouse . . . I am returning the 10 Toshiba and keeping my 11.6 Gateway netbook which is superior in every aspect except the battery life ( 5 hours for Gateway , 9 hours for Toshiba ) . The 11.6 display makes a huge difference how much you can view on the screen at a comfortable font size . Surprisingly the bottom of Toshiba , which is an Intel Atom system , gets equally warm to the Gateway , which is an AMD Athlon system , so there is no winner in that aspect . It's not going to toast your lap but I'd rather have both netbooks run cooler . I recommend the Gateway since it runs at the same price , has bigger screen and handles graphics better than the usual Atom systems like Toshiba . And the smaller Synaptics trackpad of Gateway is light years ahead of Toshiba's Mac-like pad in terms of how comfortable and effective it is .
    • 047 4  At the time of this writing . I'd say this is the best netbook I've used so far . Just understanding what you are getting . It's a stripped down laptop that offers decent performance for simple tasks like surfing on the internet , working with Microsoft office documents and a few other computer non-intensive tasks . If you are looking for something more than that , then you need to skip Netbooks and look at more full featured laptops . What I love about the NB205 over the rest of the competition ( which I have personally used or helped others set-up ) . Most of this is really subjective . As the overall performance of the netbooks are pretty much similar . ( + ) Keyboard is full size and very , very comfortable to type on ( + ) Cover although plastic also , is slighly less proned to smugs and finger prints as the glossy black on the HP / Lenovo netbooks ( + ) Junk software free . The only program that was there was a 30 - day trial of Norton's . Which actually offered an option to not be installed ! I really like that . ( + ) Really like Toshiba's utility to manage the computer's power state . Very easy to use in a very nice interface . ( + ) I like the 6 cell battery flat and behind placement vs the Lenovo S10 - 2 which props up the laptop . This makes fitting it in a laptop bag much more flush ( less thick feeling ) . ( - ) The USB port seems a bit tight . Often difficult to plug into . Not sure if it would loosen up after more use . The first time , I even had to look while I'm plugging in . I thought I was plugging into the wrong port ! I can get it in now without looking , the trick is to wiggle it to get it in there . But other's like Lenovo , I can just plug in without looking on first try .
    • 051 4  I was unable to connect to the internet because the internet cable jack on the 1st computer I received was defective . Amazon rushed me I no-hassle replacement , received today , and it works fine . This Windows XP mini is way more user friendly than my $3,000 dual-core piece of frustrating VISTA trash . I also bot the 2 gig memory upgrade . I shut down , removed the one screw and opened the small bottom panel . The 1 Gig card easily popped out and the 2 Gig in . Computer immediately registered 2 Gig memory . I also ordered a USB DVD player and immediately downloaded VLC because the windows media player failed to play my movie ( about as useful as VISTA ) . VLC played it perfectly . I uninstalled Norton ( it immediately makes it's annoying presence known ) . I installed my anti-virus software . Then downloaded Malwarebytes Antimalware . It immediately found and destroyed 7 viruses . It takes a Norton-Removal-Tool ( probably available on google search ) to pry all the Norton pieces off ( or they conflict with other virus programs , allowing the bad stuff on ) . I downloaded Open Office for the first time rather than try to hassle getting my old Word for Windows installed and then have it not handle all the new DOCX and other new Microtrash file formats . I WAS UP AND RUNNING WITH OPEN OFFICE IN MINUTES . IT READS IN ALL MY OLD DOC , EXE , AND POWERPOINT FILES AND SEEMS TO HANDLE THE NEW FORMATS , TOO . I think I'm done with Microsoft Word . And as soon as Google gets the new Chrome operating system up and running I'm very much looking forward to leaving Microsoft Windows and the piece of Vista trash far behind . Surely the world is waiting for an answer to Vista ( other than Apple ) ! I have noticed the screen is small for reading my news sites , but the computer seems as fast as my big Vista and as fast as my top of the line Fujitsu laptop . So , I can leave the important stuff at home and travel with this little beauty and a 1.5 Terabyte USB drive . If it just had a GForce graphics card , I think it might replace my high end machines . I'm looking forward to the day we get a transparent operating system that will simply let me run my applications . Google Chrome may be it . This Toshiba seems like a real value for my buck .
    • 052 4  return it to the retailer once you find out you got a defective touchpad . You will know it by the first day . my mom bought it and decided to live with it even though i told her that the touchpad often ( at least once every 5 minutes if not more of using the touchpad ) would be unresponsive . 3 weeks later and past the 14 day return policy at best buy , she is stuck with this pain in the butt netbook . I had to waste time having to deal with technical support who pretended that they were helping me by making me wipe out the hard drive and return it to factory software . They know it is a hardware issue but won't admit it . Now they are sending me a box so i can send it in for repairs which will take at least a month . Read this long thread and see how many other people are not happy with this product . . . [ . . . ]
    • 055 4  I received this as a gift for Christmas after doing a lot of research and placing it in my Wishlist . It is my intention to use it mainly for doing schoolwork / writing on the 1.5 hour commute back and forth to work on the commuter train . On Christmas Day , I charged it and then started tinkering . It was brilliantly fast , easy to use and the keyboard was comfortable despite it's size . ( I also have small hands . ) I connected to my wireless router and I was humming along the Internet with no problem . However after about 45 minutes I received a system notification that there was an issue with the cooling system and to return it for service . I shut it down and waited two hours and fired it back up using a surface with better ventilation . ( I had been resting it on my crossed legs before . ) After about 10 minutes , I received the same notice . I shut it down . I boxed it back up and shipped it back to Datavision this morning . ( Note : Datavision has a 14 day replacement / return policy . My machine was purchased on 12 / 13 and I called on 12 / 27 and got a return authorization . The person I spoke to was not the friendliest person on the planet , but I did get the return number and he WAS there on a Sunday . ) I searched the web to see of there were any other complaints about the cooling system . When I get the replacement , I will update only if I have any other problems .
    • 059 4  I recently purchased the Toshiba NB 205 to replace a first generation HP netbook that was no longer fulfilling my needs . I'm a graduate student that spends a good deal of time away from my home base , and I required a system with more oomph that allowed me to do essentially everything I do on my desktop ( mostly word processing , database creating and management , heavy web browsing and viewing streaming video ) . While I'm basically comparing this product to a very barebones system running Linux SUSE 10 and with an outdated processor , I have to say that thus far , the Toshiba really is top of the line . I can essentially run any combination of programs at any time with no slowdown , it has no problem handling streaming video , and it boots up in seconds ( very nice when dashing from class to class with little time for waiting around ) . One of the features that attracted me to this netbook versus the many others flooding the market was the chicklet-style keyboard . It doesn't just look snazzy ; the spaces between keys really cuts down on typing errors , and considering crowded keyboards are basically de rigeur for most netbooks , this was a great addition . Having a trackpad layout identical to larger laptops was a great relief , also ; having the mouse buttons on either side on my older netbook was something I never really got used to , and the Toshiba boasts a much more familiar and comfortable setup . I was concerned that the large battery , despite adding much more functional life between charges , would make the unit look and / or feel awkward , but this really isn't the case . Also , everything good that's been said about the battery life is absolutely true ; considering what I use it for , I could probably keep it running throughout the day without having to plug it in , which is invaluable in situations when power outlets are at a premium . Overall the unit looks and handles wonderfully ( I've only had it two days and have in fact received several compliments on it , even a few from those using those sleek Macs ) . I haven't encountered any problems with excessive heat despite running it for a few hours at a time . The NB 205 features an accelerometer much like the Mac laptops which senses when the unit shifts suddenly or experiences an impact and locks the hard drive in place to prevent damage . This is an excellent feature and was the only element that made me comfortable purchasing a netbook with an actual hard drive versus a solid state drive ; solid state drives have no moving parts and so are less likely to incur damage when jostled , and so the extra protection , while still benefiting from the large storage capacity , is a huge plus . The unit itself , when placed next to other 10.1 inch netbooks , looks deceptively larger . It's an interesting optical illusion , however ; when placed side by side with my wife's Acer , the screens are actually the same size , and the Toshiba is only slightly bigger overall . The weight difference is negligible , also , which is impressive given the system's capabilities . Some reviewers mentioned difficulties with adjusting the display to achieve a comfortable clarity ; I have already used it in a variety of lighting environments and have yet to experience this problem . Maybe my eyes are just more willing to adapt to sub-par conditions , but no adjustment was necessary for me . I intend to eventually run Windows 7 on this system . I'm unfamiliar with this OS , but considering other reviewers have done so and elected to not add more RAM without any significant drops in performance , I'd say it's clear that this netbook is easily one of the most powerful on the market right now . If you're looking for a highly portable system that can handle whatever you're willing to throw at it , the NB 205 is well worth the price of admission . It's a juggernaut . . . in a very small package .
    • 067 4  Pros : light weight , convenient , great battery life Cons : touchpad , display not compatable with Yahoo mail Bought this netbook as a more portable computer to take with us when traveling . Our existing notebook was too large and did not have the battery life this did , and my iPod Touch didn't have the easy-to-use keyboard and integrated video camera and microphone ( for Skype ) that this Toshiba did . The main problem I encountered was with the touchpad - - which , despite my disabling tapping and setting the sensitivity and speed to low settings , still behaved bizarrely : sometimes it seemed like a ghost was at the controls when I browsed the Internet or typed emails as back navigation or alternate tabs activated without my having clicked on them . Also I had some problems with the newer version of Yahoo mail as it refused to open , with the message that my display settings were not compatible with it . ( As native LCD resolution is all that is available , I had to resort to the earlier Classic version of Yahoo mail . ) This problem - - along with the errant touchpad - - are the biggest drawbacks to this model . ( I understand that there are workarounds to the Yahoo issue - - like using Firefox instead of IE . ) Battery life was kick-ass . We have not upgraded the memory and found that the existing 1 Gig was sufficient for our needs ( email and browsing ) . The netbook fitted neatly into a small pocket of my husband's backpack . The keyboard was conveniently sized . We opted for XP rather than Windows 7 with limited functionality , requiring upgrades .
    • 075 4  I gave three stars for the 310 . I would give five stars for the 210 but the Amazon system of reviews has lumped these two models together . It shouldn't because they have one very large difference in keyboards . Read on if keyboards matter to you . I have this model ( the 310 ) . After using the 310 for a week , I had repetitive stress problems return in my wrists that I have not had for 13 years . Keyboards are something that are related to taste . To me , the keys on the 310 require far too much pressure . I am a very fast typist and my hands do best with keyboards that require light pressure ( like most laptop keyboards , esp like on a MacBook or something like the Toshiba Porteges . Fabulous keyboards on those . ) . This 310 keyboard was bad enough for me that I realized I was not going to use it for my intended work activities ( esp on planes ) because the keyboard was going to wreck my tendons in a way I've not dealt with in so long . My wife , however , does not type nearly as much and this unit is great for her . In contrast , I also now have the NB205 - NB210 for myself . Just got it . It's the black one , not the 310 in Sable or White . About the only difference between the 310s and 210 is the 210 does not have bluetooth . All other specs are the same . It ( the 210 ) does have , however , an entirely different keyboard . It's one of the best keyboards I've ever typed with on any computer , laptop or desktop or netbook . Again , this is a matter of taste , but the keyboard on the 210 is fantastic . It's a shame that the nicer looking , highest end unit has such stiff keys . The 310 is prettier but the 210 is a delight to type on . Also , in case it is not clear , these are full size keyboards , with regard to the letters themselves . Obviously , all the keys around the letters are smaller , but the keys themselves are the same total width and distance apart as a normal keyboard . I highly recommend both , but if you are a touch typist , get the 210 , not the 310 . Your fingers , wrists , and tendons will be happier , I bet . If you are a hunt and peck typist , it will not matter which you choose , and the 310 certainly does look cooler . The black one looks pretty good though . It's better looking , by far , than some of the other netbooks that are sold out there . One more thing . If you are wanting this for music of video , just plan to use headphones . The speaker is really hardly usable for anything .
    • 078 4  This is great netbook ! It's very portable and lightweight , while also being sleek & stylish . The main reason I purchased this netbook is that I wanted an mp3 player with a bigger hard drive for my Jeep . I have an 8GB Zen but it's not big enough . I looked into a new stereo for my car , however I only have a single din , and I hate messing with cds . This laptop is still cheaper than all the fancy stereos that don't play across folders in usb playback , and it doesn't have a pop-out screen that blocks my ac vent . So far , the NB205 has worked well for this purpose , however I use it for the internet also . I was using my Nokia E71x if I needed to look up something quickly while away from my desktop ( not while driving of course ) , but this works so much better . Another reason I chose the NB205 over other netbooks like the Dell Mini , is that you can upgrade the memory . It comes with a single Dimm slot . You can swap out the 1GB that's in it to a 2GB stick if you want . I will do this eventually but for now the 1GB works pretty well . The keyboard is easy to type on . The screen is a little small for any lengthy reading but is very clear - I have my desktop set to the max at 1024 by 600 pixels , with the brightness at the max ( I don't have it set to dim when unplugged ) . The 6 - cell battery lasts pretty long , also . With the wifi turned off , using windows media player , and the volume almost maxed , I was able to take a 3.5 hour car trip and only use 50% of the battery . I usually charge my netbook every night , but it's not always necessary . I have only had two problems with this netbook . The first , others have mentioned about the touchpad . It doesn't always scroll or it lags / skips . But I use a Logitech V450 Nano for the most part because I hate touchpads . The other problem was when I would use the headphone jack , the speaker on it would still be playing . I downloaded the latest driver from Realtek and problem solved ! If you wanted to use this for music in your car , I would recommend getting a solid state harddrive . You will have to use software to clone the drive since all the Win XP installation files are contained in a hidden partition on the it ( no cd-roms ) . On a side note , the user's manual ( which is a pdf on the pc ) doesn't really address what all the function keys are , so you have to guess on some of them based on the little pictures . The wifi on / off key is easy , but some of the others aren't always obvious .
    • 079 4  Bought this netbook last weekend . I also have HP Mini with N270 processor and 16GB solid state hard drive . The screen is bright , keyboard has a good layout , and the N280 processor is faster than on the HP . Extremely minor drawbacks are the fingerprints on the exterior and the touchpad is ( somewhat ) jerky . The touchpad is not as smooth as the HP but is not sufficient make me change my mind about buying this machine over the HP . Battery life is good since I have used it about 5 hours and haven't recharged yet . The battery extends the depth of the machine about an inch but it will still fit in a netbook carrying case . This machine also is slightly heavier than the HP . Overall , I give it a 5 compared to other netbooks .
    • 083 4  I was so excited to get my netbook and stop lugging around my stone-age Dell laptop . The item shipped quickly . I took it out of the box , plugged it in , waited about 30 minutes and went to turn it on . My beautiful little netbook refused to turn on . In fact , the power button was jammed down and stuck in that position . I contacted the seller , DataVision . They offered to replace it immediately with no questions asked . Unfortunately , when the customer service rep looked at their inventory , he saw that there were no more available . Apparently I can still send it back and get merchandise credit . They suggested I call Toshiba since the unit is still under the manufacture's warranty . Seemed reasonable enough , I bought the computer new and it wasn't working out of the box . Toshiba was less than helpful to say the least . Tech support informed me that this is a common problem with this particular model , but assured me they had a solution . They wanted to ship me a replacement hinge so that I could fix the problem myself . I'm reasonably savvy when it comes to technology , but I don't feel that it is my responsibility to take apart the netbook and reassemble it , especially since I received it as a $400 paperweight . To add insult to injury , it takes 7 - 10 business days to ship from the warehouse ( depending on availability ) . I asked to speak to a manager . I got Jesse on the line and he turned out to be a tool . He suggested that the seller opened the box , broke the computer and wanted to get rid of it so they posted it on Amazon as a new product . He got very defensive when I told him that seemed like a bit of a stretch for someone to open a computer , break it in a manner that is consistent with an issue this computer has , clean the unit , repackage it , put all of the stickers back on it ( which would have been torn in the first place ) , put it back in the box , wrap everything back up , re-affix the security seals and then send it on its way . He insisted that this happens all of the time with ebay and amazon purchases . Interesting theory . He then told me that I could ship it back to the Toshiba repair center . At least this would eliminate the possibility of me breaking it while trying to repair it . This process also takes 7 - 10 business day plus shipping time and I have to pay for shipping out of pocket . Normally I wouldn't mind paying for shipping , but I've had this netbook for less than an hour , and I've never got to turn it on let alone use it . Maybe I'm being unreasonable , but it seems like a rip-off to pay to have something fixed that I received broken in the first place . I will say that its a great looking little computer and its amazingly light . I was really looking forward to using it , but it appears I'll have to wait . I'm sure I'll end up getting the part shipped to me and I'll be able to take care of it myself , but I was appalled by the customer service at Toshiba .
    • 084 4  Serious Mouse Lag We were so excited to get this going right out of the box , that I stayed up in the middle of the night , so our brand new Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN would be ready for us the next day . But sure enough , the trackpad was a major failure . The only way I could get it to move , was to use TWO fingertips to move the mouse cursor . Struggling to get to the settings in Control Panel , I finally was able to adjust or max out the pointer speed , which didn't help a bit . Support Failure In calling support , the automated voice asked for my serial number , in which I feel I slowly and clearly voiced . It failed to record the last few numbers . The automation transferred me to a human . I ended up speaking to someone named Marvin , outside of the U.S . ( The Philippines I believe ) . The overseas connection delay didn't make the conversation smooth at all . Marvin started out asking for me to wait a moment while he took the time to review my warranty information on my 1 - DAY-OLD notebook . I hurried him along , telling him , I just barely removed the protective screen packaging and unraveled the twist ties on the power cord ! He then attempted to go through standard procedures , attempting to get me into the Control Panel . I told him , No . I've tried all this . Is the diagonally patterned trackpad cover a protective sticker ? After several minutes on hold , he finally told me that this needed to be returned for warranty repair . Nah , I think I'll return it to the sto ' . One More Chance , But Not Flashy Enough . . . meaning , there was a Flash Bios Update , in Toshiza's rather prominent touchpad thread : Flash BIOS version 1.50 for mini notebook NB200 / NB205 Posted : 09 / 08 / 09 Released Date : 08 / 27 / 09 . One of the issues listed was Modified : Touch Pad on / off method for hotkeys to prevent a conflict with the ALPS touchpad driver when a USB mouse is plugged in / out , the TP function is disabled / enabled . I gave it a shot and there was maybe a 40% improvement . But alas , STILL lagged . This one's going back for a refund . Until Toshiba admits their touchpad issue and sends out a recall , this netbook is not recommended for anyone . I had hopes for this model AND Toshiba .
    • 099 4  We received the computer ok , its a great little machine two days afterwards , as the battery was under 10% I decided to plug it for a full recharge . . . surprise , the cable and adapter didnt match , the transformer had a three pin male input and the power cable a two female plug . took the problem to the Toshiba site , they game a case number and said any of the authorized service centers in Costa Rica would gave me the right cable under warranty . . . . wrong , I ended up paying $23 ( aprox ) for the right cable , didnt argue because it would have taken a couple weeks at least and my wife needed the netbook . other than that , great battery life , nice keyboard , a recommended buy
    • 101 4  After researching several netbooks and reading all the reviews on the Toshiba NB205 , I purchased the NB205 - 312 and am very pleased . I had no issues with wireless or network setup ( bypassed Toshiba software ) and was connected in minutes . Likewise , no problems with the touch pad and the keyboard is great . Battery life is as advertised and the 6 cell is not a size problem . I would recommend this netbook to anyone who wants a well made , easy to setup and use , well laid out unit . Read all the informative reviews here and remember what a netbook is intended to do . Very happy with the netbook and my first experience with Amazon .
    • 107 4  This laptop is perfect if you are looking for a light , relatively powerful laptop to take on the road . For its intended purpose , it is a great little machine not weighed down by a bunch of crap pre-loaded , taking HD space . The only drawback I have encountered is that the monitor resolution is not enough to run Photoshop , which I use a lot . The workaround is to shoot tethered like always ( I can run Lightroom ) and save the PS work until I get back to my desktop .
    • 108 4  I've been using mine for a few hours now , downloading updates & installing programs I want . The battery was charged to 98% right out of the box so after testing the AC adapter I unplugged it to test the battery capacity . I had to bump up the screen brightness ( a shortcut off the keyboard , which I appreciated ) to be able to see things clearly . With brightness at maximum , the processor working overtime installing and uninstalling programs to customize the computer for my needs , after about 3 hours the battery is still only at 83% . Nice . The only major complaint I have is the position of the touchpad . I have pretty big hands and can type comfortably on the keyboard ( tested it in the store prior to buying it ) but the mouse moves because my left thumb gets too close to the touchpad . The touchpad itself is positioned about an inch left of center , if it were centered this might not happen . I plan on getting a wireless mouse and disabling the touchpad which will be a first for me , I've been using touchpads for years . The maximum screen resolution allowed is 1024 x 600 so Yahoo Plus warns every time I open it that resolution is too low to enjoy the full effect . Once I acknowledge this warning however the Plus version looks just fine to me . I still give the computer 5 stars because the price is right , it suits my needs ( Office , Facebook ) , and there are 3 USB ports for accessorizing . Enjoy .
    • 151 4  I must comment on this netbook . I am VERY SATISFIED with this Toshiba . I tried two other netbooks before this one , the eeepc , which sucks , and the new Samsung GO . . . which sucks even more ! The eeepc wasnt so so bad , but i couldnt deal with the glossy cover absorbing everying fingerprint that touches it . I found myself cleaning it constantly . The Samsung GO , which was just released , need to be Just RECALLED ! It is terrible ! It ships with IE 6 , not even IE 7 so you have to spend time downloading IE 7 which is far better . Also , The Samsung has many problems installing Real Player ( basic ) and other simple software programs . Maybe I just got a lemon , but for $477.00 , I had rather high expectations of the Samsung . The Toshiba 312 has been awesome for me . Works perfectly . Good Luck ! Rod
    • 155 4  I bought the Toshiba netbook NB205 - 310 computer and received it last week . I was very excited about it after reading reviews by other Mac users . I was extremely disappointed . In total , I spent four hours on the phone with tech support and had to take the computer back to its factory state several times . In the end ( after two days of trying to get it to work ) , the mouse pad would not respond . Even with an external mouse connected , the cursor would not move . I gave up and took it back . Maybe I just got a lemon . Who knows ? It does have a sharp screen and the keyboard is close to the feel of my Mac Book Pro , but since it had so many problems , I can't tell you much more than that . I am thinking about ordering another one ( just in case I got a lemon ) due to the rave reviews by others . Or maybe I'll just wait and hope that they fix these issues .
    • 158 4  Purchased this for our trips around the country and abroad , when lugging the larger laptops is to cumberson . Also because it has XP for the OS . Agree with the other reviewer who experienced difficulty getting connected to wireless LAN . CAT5 no problems . Remember , this Toshiba has no on / off wireless switch . If you get When you press the Fn + F8 ' hotkey ' combination to turn on Wi-Fi or another wireless device , you may see this message : Wireless Communication is Disabled . Please Turn on The Wireless Communication Switch . This message is displayed if the Wireless Communication Switch is OFF . This ' switch ' is implemented in software on the NB205 , and others , though on many other Toshiba models , the Wireless Communication Switch is a hardware switch . You must use Fn + F8 to turn it on . Also experienced The wireless communication was connected , the router had assigned an IP address , but the NB205 refused to get it . It sat at acquiring IP address until it timed out . After time on the phone with Toshiba rep : ( , and Linksys Rep ; ) , finally had to reset password on the WRT54G and all was well . The enclosed manual is next to nothing , so go to : [ . . . ] If you experience problems connecting wirelessly , I'd call your Router rep . Sorry , but Toshiba's rep wasn't that helpful . Another idea , as I did , was to take the unit to Best Buy and see if the unit can access their wireless LAN . If it can then you might have a password issue at home between the NB205 and your router . Overall very pleased with the simplicity and features . Perfect for the road if you don't need heavy MS Office features .
    • 160 4  This is an awesome machine with lots of power and style . I can find no downside : even with only 1gb main memory ( expandable to two ) I can do anything I want with it . Yes , HD video can have playback issues ( waiting for the large files to load ) but most everything else is spot on . The keboard is excellent even for larger laptops . If I were to look for caveat it would be the ability to view in indirect sunlight - - you can't do it well . But seeing I'm usually home or Starbucks , that has not been an issue for me . I am a web designer so at times I deal with large files , the netbook handles them well . Is it as powerful as a full size laptop or desktop ? No . But then again it depends on the power you need . For me this fits the bill nicely . I recommend this product !
    • 163 4  Well , I have used the machine now for over two weeks and I am still amazed that it works so well , at least at the level of my use , in terms of office programs , adobe photoshop ( opens quite fast ) , internet and a bit of videos . It is so light that the 9 hr battery ( which weighs double the rest of the machine ) seems just too much of a luxury . In the beginning Firefox made a fuss at low intensity screen size ( 600x800 I guess ) but it worked fine . Battery holds well for 9 hours if you do not use wireless connection . I replaced the memory with a 2GB card I bought ( not toshiba ) and it recognized it quickly . And this is the first time ever I had done such a technical manouver . The touch pad was too sensitive that the cursor was jumping all over , but Toshiba has a way ( though I had to switch some 4 screens to get there ) to block tapping while typing , and that was the cure . Keyboard , though small , did not give me much trouble ( I type with all fingers ) . So far so good and the price was just great too . Since my previous experiences with Toshiba had not been that good ( overheating , etc ) I was having second thoughts , but Amazon prior reviews gave me confidence , and Thanks .
    • 202 4  I received this netbook as a Christmas present . It was suppose to be a pleasant surprise . After I charged the battery and turned the netbook on there was a red dot on the screen - talk about embarrassing . Even though it was from my parents , I didn't want to have to go back to them and sound like an ingrate for having this issue - keep in mind this was a Christmas present . I uploaded updates for the computer hoping the dot would disappear . However , the red dot would not go away . When I contacted customer service , they took my information and stated that I would be receiving an email pertaining to the return process . I asked the representative a few questions , and indicated that I wanted to make sure that I would not be responsible for shipping costs . His reply - Just follow the process and he hung up . I have worked over 8 years in customer service . Plus I use to work for a computer manufacture . Usually if the product was damaged out of box ( and / or within 30 days ) - shipping would be covered both ways . Obviously not with Toshiba . I am suppose to pay for shipping to get my netbook fixed ! I think what made this situation worse was the customer service representative I spoke with . He should have been ( 1 ) more customer oriented and friendly ( 2 ) when I made a comment about the shipping costs , he should have been truthful . Obviously Toshiba doesn't care for their customers as their customer service group was extremely rude . Now I really feel like an ingrate . I should be happy with the present my parents give me . Instead , I am stuck with a netbook with a bright red dot that hurts my eyes , I feel guilty for the situation , and I am down right angry with this situation .
    • 231 4  Toshiba has been one of those underappreciated brands . I am glad it is finally getting some justice in the computer market . The mini computer's quality is superb . The thing about mini computers ( netbooks ) is that you have to choose between portability and the screen size . ( I know I want to have a cake and eat it too ) . I bought a pink mini book for my 11 year old girl ; she plays computer games on the laptop . Eventually , I had to return the pink computer because I noticed she prefers to use another computer with bigger screen . I also noticed myself packing my old laptop ( 12 inch screen ) rather than the 10 inch Toshiba for the road . For business travelers they might be better off choosing weight reduction rather than size reduction in regards to choosing portable laptops .

  • 142 4  Nothing is perfect , but this is pretty close . I bought this to be a portable unit for use in the field when working on electronics equipment , and for traveling . The large keyboard and long battery life drew me in and haven't disappointed . I tried all the competition , even borrowed a few , and this is head and shoulders above the rest ! ! ! My few beefs , the touchpad & buttons . The buttons work well but can be annoying in that they are right on the edge and can be bumped in error when the laptop is sitting in my lap . They ARE easy to use though , probably why they were placed there . The other annoying part of the touchpad though is the scroll pads - they aren't well defined , and are a bit small and finnicky . They sometimes don't work or don't work as desired with my large fingers . I've had many touchpads , and the pad itself on this is as good as the best , with the exception of the scroll pads . Given the superiority of the rest of the machine , I'm happy to live with this irksome issue - maybe Toshiba has or will soon improve this . . . All that said , the rest of the machine is superb . The keyboard is great , truly a pleasure to use - especially when compared to other netbooks . The battery life is excellent ( my reason for purchasing ) , and is every bit of 8 - 9 hours when used frugally . With WiFi and Bluetooth turned on and heavy use , it's closer to 6 - 7 - still far above the best . The processor is up to everything I've thrown at it , though I do keep in mind it's a netbook not a speed machine . For all the basics ( office apps , videos , internet , basic photo viewing and light editing , it's perfect and doesn't skip a beat or slow me down . The speaker is a bit under-sized , but I expected that with a machine designed for small size and light weight , and I have headphones that work great . The total package seems very rugged . The outside case is solid , and the keyboard doesn't flex a bit . The battery kind of sticks out in the back , which may become a weak point in a fall , but that's a small price to pay in exchange for such long battery life . The sable brown color may not be the sexiest , nor does it stand out in a crowd ( good for me ) , but it also doesn't show the fingerprints and scratches that inevitably come with use . The Crucial memory upgrade , to 2Gb , works perfectly , and is easy to install - worth every penny ! I also bought a Targus netbook bag that perfectly fits this , even with the larger battery . It's got room for the charger and a mouse / pointer , and makes this a joy to pack around . Best , it's made to allow me to use the netbook without removing it from the case - at least for short times . Because it blocks the cooling ports , I wouldn't want to use it in the case for too long , but any case will be the same . After using it for 2 months , I'd happily recommend this to a friend ! ! !
    • 014 4  I have had the NB205 frost white version ( the $399 price ) for about a week . Good points : 1 ) build quality seems high compared to other netbooks that I looked at . 2 ) keyboard and touchpad are very usable . 3 ) the NB205 looks great ( my opinion ) . 4 ) screen is bright and usable outdoors . There is a glossy finish but compared to glossy notebooks that I have , the NB205 seems better . 5 ) Battery life seems to be good . Using full power and bright screen , the batter lasts over 6 hours . With battery saving features enabled , would last longer . Bad points : 1 ) Speaker is terrible . I use earbuds which work fine . 2 ) Many special Toshiba programs used to control hardware and do different system tasks . This only a bad point if you are thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 because it may make the upgrade harder ( are there Windows 7 versions available of these programs , etc . ) . I upgraded the memory to 2GB . This did not seem to make a significant difference in performance . Perhaps someone who runs more demanding programs might have a different result . Overall , I am very satisfied with the unit but one must keep in mind there are limitations when using netbooks .
    • 070 4  I decided to get a netbook because I desperately needed to replace my two laptops , dying at the same time ( one from former job , one personal ) . A netbook serves my needs for now until my financial situation improves - - it does what I need , and the price is great . I got mine with Windows 7 , well , Windows 7 starter , actually . Through my research , the Toshiba 205 emerged as the clear winner . The two issues in all the customers reviews that concerned me the most were the non-responsive trackpad , and the cursor-jumping . Trackpad : I got lucky - - my trackpad does work . The only issue is , that though it is much bigger than most netbook trackpads , the edges are not responsive , so I use only the middle . Not a problematic adjustment for me . A BIG plus is that the right and left click buttons are separate . I am accustomed to that from my other laptops , so this is nice - - when I tried the single clicker in the store , it drove me nuts . Cursor-jumping : This was a HUGE problem the first couple of days . I thought I'd have to return this otherwise fine laptop , then , instead , I went online to look for a fix . The forums insisted that typists are inadvertently hitting the trackpad , causing the cursor to jump . I was sure I wasn't , but I tried one of the fixes - - disabling the tapping feature through the Control Panel , very simple , took a couple of clicks . And voila ! No more cursor-jumping . Sound , as predicted , is terrible , with the speaker inexplicably placed underneath the unit . But I knew that going in , and with headphones , the sound is fine . I read on another review , that Windows Starter 7 will not play DVDs . Should I buy a separate player to plug into this , I will see if it is an issue , but for now , that just hasn't arisen in my use . I will likely , in a few months , establish a desktop / larger laptop system as my main system , as the smaller screen is definitely less than ideal for hours and hours of document-scanning / reading , but for now , this little gem , priced right , is doing the job . Four instead of 5 stars because it did not come with the full Windows 7 version ( apparently ) , and it does have the limitations of a netbook - - small screen , bad sound , no CD / DVD drive .
    • 073 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I did quite a bit of research in regards to netbooks , and found the Toshiba to be the best on paper . I have specific evidence now that proves my research to be on point . I have found no evidence of some of the complaints I have read , including , faulty touchpad , ( not a problem ) , or sound quality , ( excellent ) , all in all a wonderful product . . . . truly the best of the rest ! !
    • 076 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Every laptop I've bought since 1994 has been a Toshiba , and I've never been disappointed . Also , on this netbook , I'm glad it's got XP and not Vista .
    • 089 4  Pro's : Absolutely amazing battery life and the super light weight of the netbook . Con's : ultra sensitive touchpad and the cursor skips , [ . . . ] What a waste . . .
    • 110 4  We purchased this Toshiba netbook for travel while using Dragon Medical for EMR dictation . We were concerned that it would have trouble with such a robust program as Dragon , but it has done just fine . It is a little slower than our desktop or business laptop , but it works . We had no trouble with the wireless , as I noted some people did . It picked up our home network right away and as we have traveled and used it on other networks , we also have had no trouble . The battery life really is wonderful ; we do get the nine hours that Toshiba claims you will . All in all , we have been very pleased and would certainly recommend it , as we already have with friends and family
    • 115 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I love this computer . I can take it everywhere and the mouse-pad and the keyboard have a great size . The only bad thing about it is that the battery does not last up to 9 hours as they advertised . I got that the first week of using the computer but after that , the battery only last up to 4 hours . But anyways . . . I can plug it in anytime I need more battery . Besides that . . . I'm in love with it !
    • 120 4  I bought this netbook specifically for MS SharePoint 2009 Conference I was attending . I knew that I would be live-blogging during the conference and needed a computer that would last all day . I chose the Toshiba because of the long battery life and it didn't disappoint . The only day that I ran out of battery power was the last day and I was doing some intensive file copying to an external drive . I think the external drive may have been the culprit . The speed is awesome . I also purchased the 2Gig Ram upgrade so I had plenty of memory . I upgraded to Windows 7 just because I could . That was another reason I bought Toshiba over the other netbooks . Toshiba already had Windows 7 drivers . There is one thing that doesn't work in Win 7 that I miss . That is the function keys to turn on / off the wireless . There is no hardware key to disable wireless ( Toshiba - are you listening ? We would like a hardware switch ) so to disable the wireless you have to get into the wireless device settings . Toshiba has software function keys to enable / disable the function key functions but from what I understand from the Toshiba forums is that they kind of broke that with their Vista drivers . They introduced something called Flashcards that is supposed to let you assign functions to the function keys , and they kept that same app for Win 7 but I have never been able to get that to work properly and the user interface is cluncky . All in all - I love this netbook . I use it a lot more than my 17 developer laptop . It is so portable that I can take it anywhere and it sure was nice on the plane . I was able to watch a couple of movies on it .
    • 148 4  good product quality - excelent battery life time a kind of slow to start on but not so bad it's my second one , because i also have the first european model and this is even better
    • 173 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I love this netbook . It is exactly what I was looking for . It runs great . The small size is easy to get used to . It's got a long battery life of course .
    • 180 4  As usual with Amazon , the netbook arrived right away . Since then , I have been very pleased with the performance . The screen resolution and the battery life are unbelievable . The only problem is the noted cursor jumping . It's a bit annoying and takes some getting used to . All-in I recommend this netbook especially for the price . I have been using it to give online demos with multiple applications running simultaneously .
    • 193 4  I recently purchased my mini for college so I wouldn't have to carry around my large laptop . I love the convenience of having a mini . pros : It starts up quickly . It is fairly simple to figure out how to use it to it's full potential . The keyboard is nice and not overcrowded like some minis I've seen . It's very light . cons : The mouse pad area sucks . It gets stuck or doesn't move smooth and fluid-like . Toshiba installed some type of block or something like that , that I couldn't get pass to log onto my schools secure wifi network . That sucked and I had to actually go and visit the IT people . Overall I give it a B + because they still have room for improvement .
    • 198 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN 10.1 - Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Nice . Great battery life . Would have prefered Windows 7 and a different keyboard . Program that I bought it to use kept having error and closing . Returned after several days .

    • 218 4  This was a replacement for an old full size laptop that decided to die while I was on Thanksgiving holiday . After reading many reviews , both by users and by PC publications , I selected this little Toshiba . It's great . . . very long battery life makes it easy to use on the plane or out and about . The wireless connects extremely fast . I use it mostly for emails and if I want to do some real big stuff , I connect to my PC at home . Perfect little netbook . No complaints , except that I need to get used to the keyboard , since I use a big ergonomic keyboard at home . I highly recommend this little netbook . Great price and good value for what you get .

  • 195 4  I hardly have any complaints about this netbook ! I'll start off first with my opinions on what could be better . 1 . The keyboard is kinda cramped , especially if you do a lot of typing . But that's an inherent disadvantage to netbooks in general , so it really should be dismissed . 2 . When typing , sometimes my palm messes with the touchpad . Not a big problem , especially since a key combo can turn the pad off . 3 . Because of the small screen , text is small . You better have decent eyesight . Text can be enlarged , but with little screen realestate , not much will fit on the screen . 4 . I wish my this netbook had bluetooth built in . It was my understanding that it did . If I had bluetooth , I could wirelessly tether my internet capable smartphone and have mobile internet for my netbook . However this is easily fixable with a usb bluetooth adapter , and they're getting smaller all the time . 5 . There seems to be some small glitches with the wifi hardware in this netbook . I seem to need to reset the connection more often than expected . Not a big problem if you know how to do it . 6 . The lack of a cd drive sucks , but that's a netbook trait , so you can't really count that . However , if you're computer savvy enough , and you have a desktop and you're own network , then you can wirelessly share your desktops drives and use them on the netbook as if they were attached physically . It's a little slow to use a drive this way , because network speeds are generally slower than a drives read / write speed , but it gets the job done for installing software or burning discs . you might have problems watching dvd movies this way , because of the bandwidth required . Now for what I like about this thing . 1 . Great battery life , it'll last all day for me with average usage . the battery on this model is bigger than standard , so it sticks out the back some . But it doesn't matter . It still fits in a netbook neoprene sleeve if you stretch the matierial some . And the battery makes carrying the netbook by itself a little easier , in my opinion . 2 . This thing runs fast ! winXP is still my prefered windows OS . It runs great on this hardware . I never get any crashes , hangups , or lag times , and I do quite a bit on this thing being a nerd and all . . . 3 . This thing gets great reception for wireless signals . 4 . comes with a webcam built in , works nicely . 5 . this thing is compact ! I can easily take it everywhere . I'm typing while on the pot at this very moment ! So overall , I love this thing . It's a great buy for a great price . I recommend it to anyone considering a netbook . If you're tech savvy , then you'll find this netbook can do anything a standard laptop or desktop can .
    • 025 4  It's been a month that I've had this laptop and at the outset , let me say I'm hard to please when it comes to computer equipment so if I've given this 4 stars , that says quite a lot . I went through lots of reviews on Amazon and around the net and almost settled on the Acer 11 but dropped it partially because of the slower processor . The 10 screen is less cramped than I expected and I hardly ever have to scroll sideways . Also , the keyboard is extremely comfortable even for someone like me who is used to proper full-size keyboards . The screen is sharp , it's light in weight and my only quibble I have at the moment is that the battery pack isn't as tightly attached to the body as I would like . There's a slight movement when I carry the piece around and , well , as I said , I'm hard to please . I removed some crap from the system like MS-Works and installed OpenOffice instead - something I use on my regular desktop as well . Ditto with the Norton rubbish which has been replaced with AVG and Commodo Firewall . At the moment , it's the best of it's class in my book . I guess a multi-touch keypad would have been nice but then nothing is perfect . Hope this review helps someone .
    • 139 4  I've had my netbook for almost two weeks and I love it . The only issue i've had with the keyboard has been my fingers slipping down and hitting the touchpad and my cursor ' jumping ' where i don't want it to be . Something that I sometimes have issue with my regular laptop . Cons : I uninstalled the Norton software without activating it . I really don't like Norton , not after a stunt they pulled sending a rebate as a check card a couple of years ago . Not to mention that the program is a resource hog . But that's my personal issue , others may feel differently . I was a bit concerned that I didn't get the installation discs with the computer . If the harddrive crashes or I need to reformat , I have nothing to reformat it with . So I don't care for that . I'm also not fond of not having the owner's manual in printed format . Beyond that , I've done a bit of traveling with it and boy is it nice to only be lugging around 3 pounds of computer instead of almost 10 . It has , thus far , delivered all it's said to . i tweaked mine a bit to get clutter off the tiny desktop - set the bottom taskbar to tuck away , use the quick launch instead of the desktop icons , etc . You will probably want a mouse . the trackpad could be more sensitive , but it works . Also , if you like or use photoshop , it'll toss up a fit when you install it since the min resolution requirements are 1024x768 , although it will install . And I want it on there more as a ' in case i need it ' than doing any real graphic's work on it . Cases and slipcovers might be tough to find depending on where you are . Here I only have a couple of stores and not much choice , however be aware that the laptop is closer to 11 inches x 11 inches with the 6 cell battery . I bought a 12 inch slipcover and it fits in there quite comfortably . I upgraded to the 2 gig of ram , and it's very easy to do . It works fine with just one gig but you do notice a bit of a speed up with 2 . So , delivers what it's promised thus far . I'm not too fond of not getting the software discs . If you're used to or comfortable with computers you'll want to tweak things a bit to speed them up , streamline things . But , thus far , it seems to be a good and steady computer .

  • 197 4  I have been using this netbook for about 2 months now and I have to say that it is been very satisfying with a very good balance of features . The keyboard is very nice and solid , the stock Windows XP installation is not loaded with junk , and all in all the system is well designed for what it is intended for . I'm not universally a fan of Toshiba laptops , but in this case I think they have done a very nice job . I also can't believe I prefer the brown over the blue but I do . I am a tinkerer so I like trying alternate operating systems , etc . The nb205 - 310 is not as widely supported / documented as some models by Acer and Asus , but I have not had major issues . Some key features that I have taken advantage of are the USB charge-in-standby feature , and the Bluetooth capability . Battery life is good . I wouldn't give anything a five star rating unless it was absolutely incredible , so four stars is intended as high praise . I also looked at an Asus and the Samsung Go , which could be had at similar prices at the time . I found the Toshiba keyboard compelling . The only thing that the Asus had that the Toshiba lacked was wireless n . I was a little worried that netbooks were useless and that I would soon wish I had spent a little extra money and purchased a full-size laptop , but that has not been my experience at all .
    • 095 4  After looking at several laptops I decided on this one . The reason being is the keyboard . I received this mini laptop and really like the way it works and it has everything that I was looking for at a reasonable price . I'm very happy with the purchase . The speed of the computer is fine and the color & clarity of the screen is very vivid . I have not used the webcam yet so I can't comment on that . Very handy to carry with me being so small.I purchased this mini so when I go on vacation I can bring it with me without lugging a heavier laptop around and it fits in my purse .
    • 144 4  The battery life is exceptional . I didn't time it , but it ran on and on and on . It would have been nice if the screen went to the edges as it would gain an inch in width and more in height , even allowing for the webcam . There is no manual so I'm still trying to figure out how to use features . Toshiba wants to be save on costs , but fifty cents to print an instruction manual wouldn't kill them .
    • 199 4  Nice . Great battery life . Would have prefered Windows 7 and a different keyboard . Program that I bought it to use kept having error and closing . Returned after several days .
    • 204 4  Bought two of these for christmas presents , one for me , other one for my daughter . Couldn't be more pleased . As noted by others , it has a great keyboard , good screen and large touchpad . The touchpad is a bit touchy toward the top , meaning the cursor tends to jump around and for some reason will go back to previous pages when viewing the internet . Only happens rarely , and again not a big deal . Battery seems to last forever . Only other comment I have is the gloss exterior is a serious finger print magnet . People used to using newer computers may find it a bit slow , but hey , for the extended battery life and small size , I'm willing to slow down a bit . I loaded Office 2000 on it and it works with no problem . For the price , I think it is a great buy .

  • 230 4  I love my new netbook ! It is super portable and the amazing battery life is fantastic . I chose to go with Windows XP as I was told it would run faster . I have no comparison , but have been happy with the performace of this netbook . My only gripe is that the keyboard is a bit small so my hands often brush over the mouse pad when I am typing and this causes text to go in places I don't intend for it to go which is frusterating ! ! Supposedly F9 disables the mouse temporarily , but this seems to work only briefly and then I have the same troubles again . Hopefully Toshiba will come up with a fix for this soon . . . or maybe there is a program I can download to take care of this . Aside from this one issues , I love the machine !
    • 082 4  Of all the netbooks this is the one my parents picked for me . I love it and I never have to carry around the plug anymore with the 9 hour battery life . My parents love the hard drive protection as I really move around with my laptop and am not always easy on it . It is great and I got it in pink .
    • 087 4  I'm a student and bought this netbook for taking notes , battery life and portability . It has been wonderful . My only problem was with a faulty audio software install that made the headphone jack not function . A random reboot when trying to install printer software solved the problem . Also , the speaker is tiny and you can barely hear on full volume , so you definitely need external speakers / headphones for music or videos . The battery life is fantastic - it lasts anywhere from 6 - 8 hours , recharges quickly , and lasts for days when hibernating . The appearance is great , overall an excellent purchase for everyday use .
    • 146 4  Light weight , nice looking , great battery life , awesome for traveling . Only issue I have with it is the mouse pad is a bit off base - as in , the arrow is not precise at times , like it gets jarred . I tried to adjust how fast or slow I wanted the speed to be , but that's not the issue . It's just not exact . I have read about this in some other people's reviews too . I might pursue more information as to how to better deal with this minor problem . All in all , I really like this netbook and I highly recommend it !
    • 201 4  My wife travels a lot on business and a computer is a must . She has been lugging around a SONY VAIO that is a great computer , but quite heavy . For Christmas I got her the Toshiba Notebook and she just got back from her first trip with it . The only complaint is the sensitivity of the touch pad . Otherwise it worked out of the box with no set up problems .

  • Just in case you decide to order a case for this netbook , keep in mind that the dimensions in the Amazon description or Toshiba's website ( 10.4 x 7.6 x 1.27 inches ) are the dimensions of this netbook WITHOUT the 6 - cell battery . If you look at the side-view photo in the Amazon description area ( the one with the 7.6 measurement right below it ) , you'll see it's pictured without the battery . I just measured mine and with the 6 - cell battery protruding from the back , it's actually 10.4 x 8.4 x 1.27 so many of the cases you find on Amazon made for 10 netbooks may not fit the NB205 with the 6 - cell battery . Okay that's it for my update . . . read on for my original review . . . - - - - - - - - - - I just received my Toshiba NB205 yesterday and after spending many hours playing with it , I can easily say that , hands down , it is the BEST Netbook on the market today ! At the end of next week , I'll be traveling overseas and I wanted a small and lightweight laptop that I would be able to use to watch movies on the plane , transfer vacation photos and videos to , and use the internet for researching stuff from my hotel room . I currently own a 15 Macbook Pro but decided I didn't want to take it with me since it's a bit bigger & heavier and I can't afford to lose it . That's when I began researching these Atom-based Netbooks . When I started researching , the Toshiba NB205 had not yet been released but there were still many netbook models out there by other manufacturers . I had originally considered the Samsung NC10 , Acer Aspire One AOD250 , Asus 1000HE , and Lenovo S10 as they all were pretty much equipped with similar configurations ( Atom N270 / N280 1.6 or 1.66Ghz cpu , 10 screen , 1GB ram , 160GB HD , 6 - cell Li-Ion battery , Windows XP Home ) and priced in the $350 - 400 price range . I won't go into too much detail about what I liked or didn't like about the other products but I had pretty much narrowed it down to either the Samsung NC10 or the Acer AOD250 . Then I came across a pre-release review from Laptop Magazine on the Toshiba and decided to wait on my netbook . It was definitely worth the wait considering this is the first netbook I've come across that actually had noticeable differentiating features . When you compare all the others , it's kind of hard to choose from one over the other because they're all so similar ! The 4 biggest selling points on this Toshiba NB205 that had me wait for it was the 9 - hour battery life , the look & feel of the keyboard , the size of the trackpad & buttons , and the overall aesthetics of it . The whole point of buying a laptop this small and compact is for its portability factor . When you have to lug a brick-based AC adapter with you in fear the battery in your laptop won't last as long as you need it , it sure interferes with how portable carrying a laptop really is . A 9 - hour lithium-ion battery will definitely solve that problem . Most of you are probably wondering how realistic that 9 - hour rating really is . . . Let me just reassure you all , the battery life is GOOD ! I brought it to a full charge , then unplugged it from the adapter and watched two movies on it ( more on the movie playback capabilities later ) and did 4 hours worth of web surfing afterwards - - all off the power from the battery on a single charge ! You students out there can now bring it to all your classes and not have to look for a wall outlet ! Oh , btw , I had the screen brightness set to 1 / 2 ( level 4 brightness setting ) and turned off the Bluetooth . Netbooks are known for smaller keyboards and even worse , SMALL trackpads and trackpad button ( s ) . In addition to the smaller size , many of the netbooks I saw in person at my local Fry's Electronics had very cheapy - feeling keyboards - - they just felt real fragile compared to the keyboard on my Macbook Pro . Enter the Toshiba NB205 . Finally , a netbook that has a keyboard with keys that had the look and feel of a Mac keyboard and a robustly solid build to it . In addition to the look and feel , the keys were also pretty darn close in width to my Mac keyboard ( both my Macbook Pro's keyboard , and my desktop Mac's keyboard ) . I'll try to post some comparison photos on Amazon this weekend for all those interested . The trackpad and buttons on the NB205 is also the biggest I've seen in the netbook category . Toshiba did a tremendous job in getting this right . Most of the other netbooks had really small trackpads and little miniature trackpad button ( s ) that felt real flimsy . Another feature that I like with the trackpad that's not stated anywhere is that the very right edge of the trackpad can be used for scrolling web pages or other documents ( similar to the one on the Samsung NC10 ) . This feature is not obvious as there are no arrow indicators like there is on the NC10 but it does support it ! I won't go into the aesthetics of this unit since you can pretty much see how amazing this netbook looks from the Amazon photos ( I'll also add my own photos this weekend so you can get a better feel for the size , etc . ) but let me now shift focus on using it . Although I upgraded the memory on the unit to 2GB ( I installed the Crucial 2GB 200 - pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2 - 6400 800MHz Memory Module and it works great with the NB205 ! ) , all the testing I performed and am about to describe was done with the stock 1GB memory . The very first thing I wanted to make sure this unit can do is play back , at the very least , DVD-quality movies ( i.e . 480P movies ( 720x480 resolution ) ) . One thing I'd HIGHLY recommend everyone who's interested in watching movies on their netbook do is download the FREE media player called VLC ( Google download vlc ) . VLC is very lightweight and will play back movies a lot smoother than Quicktime or Windows Media Player ; and given the inherently slower speeds of these Intel Atom processors compared to the Intel Core 2 Duo processors , using the VLC media player is your best bet . Using a free program called Handbrake , one can convert their Bluray or DVD movies to AVC / h .264 - encoded movies , which is what I used to convert some of my Bluray collection into a format that can be played-back on my NB205 . Since it's out of the scope of this review and would require a tutorial guide of its own , I won't be able to explain how you would go about converting your Bluray or DVD movies . Anyhow , I first converted my Bluray edition of Valkyrie to a 720x480 resolution with a conservative 864kbs bitrate . The NB205 had NO PROBLEMS playing it back . . . It played back with very smooth video and the audio was synced up perfectly throughout the entire movie . So I decided to convert the movie again . . . . this time , using more aggressive settings . . . I converted it to a resolution of 1024x600 ( since this is the native resolution of the NB205 ' s screen ) and a 2048kbps bitrate . Again , the NB205 was able to play the movie without a hitch . I didn't bother trying to convert the movie to 720P since the native resolution of the screen is only 1024x600 ( it would be equivilent to 600P but 600P is not a standard ) . If you're planning to watch movies on the NB205 with someone else , you'll be happy to know that watching it from a 45 degree angle is very acceptible . Beyond the 45 degree angle , you won't be able to really see much so don't expect to have more than 3 people watching from it ( why would you have more than 2 or 3 people watching off a 10 screen anyways ! ? ) . Given it's capability to playback movies very smoothly , anything else I was going to throw at it would be child's play . Anyhow , I was reading that this laptop does get hot but after playing back two movies on it , it was not unbearable when resting it on my lap . So it doesn't seem like overheating problems will be too much of a concern for this laptop ( but only long-term usage can really confirm this ) . Another cool feature the NB205 sports that I'm not sure is available on all the other competitor models is a built-in accelerometer . It works the same way as the iPhone accelerometer but it's in the NB205 purely to detect if the laptop is about to take a fall . When it detects motion , it quickly moves the hard drive heads away from the hard drive to prevent any mishaps in case the hard drive is currently reading from or writing to the hard disks . Using a Toshiba software utility that's installed from the factory , you can change the sensitiviy threshold of the accelerometer or turn it off altogether . There are obviously a lot more features that the NB205 comes with but I'm not going to explain each one simply because they're self-explanatory ( such as bluetooth , wifi , etc . ) but you can find out more about those features in Amazon's description of this product . One final note before I conclude my review . . . Toshiba released two main models of the NB205 on the same day . . . the NB205 - N310 / 311 / 312 / 313 ( which is the model I have - - the NB205 - N310 / BN to be exact ) and the NB205 - N210 . I think if you want to save $50 , the NB205 - 210 would be a good choice as well - - provided you don't need Bluetooth or the Mac-style chiclet keyboard . For the extra $50 , though , you also get the much sleeker , unique Toshiba-styling of the NB205 - N31X series . So if you're in the market for a very portable laptop , and you're considering a 10 - based netbook , the Toshiba NB205 is packed with features , enclosed around a very aesthetically pleasing body , and is very competitively priced ! ! !

    • 134 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN 10.1 - Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I am 6'2 with big hands and this little bugger does handle my needs on the go and then some not to knock my 17 Laptop out of the picture . And after simple install of the extra RAM , it gets it going ! All in all this is a great buy with the help at AMAZON . Soon as I get some time the external DVD writer gets installed for some more fun . This is why I purchased the Toshiba Netbook hopefully with no drama , Done .

I fat finger the heck out of keys when typing and these keys are MUCH easier to hit accurately . The only down side is the tiny screen . It takes getting used to . Makes my old laptop screen look like an IMAX movie theater in comparison ! It really does .

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 Series 10.1 - Inch Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I recently purchased the Toshiba NB 205 to replace a first generation HP netbook that was no longer fulfilling my needs .
    • 036 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Update August 16 , 2009 I still really like this netbook and it is an almost perfect replacement to a super high-end laptop that it replaced .

    • 063 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N311 / W 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I'm on my 2nd unit , the first one had a bad power switch .
    • 113 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) its really good netbook . I would say one of the best . The only reason i gave 4 star was that it does not have antiglare screen . Otherwise , one of the best netbook . Very Classy looking . Great battery . . . . Recommended only if u can handle glare screens like other laptops or netbbok .
    • 153 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I have recently purchased this exact laptop via Amazon.com I'm going to cut to the chase and do a PRO and CON list .

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Bought as a second laptop for around the house and for returning to college . LOVE the size . Fits right in my school bag . So far , it is operating well . Good battery life . Great keyboard , feels almost full size , easy to type on . Touchpad is easy to use . I rarely pull my mouse out . Screen is just big enough that there is no horizontal scrolling necessary . Bought an inexpensive external disc drive which works fine so far . Watching videos online is sometimes a bit jerky , but not impossible . I watch a lot on Hulu . Picture is clear , just a tad jerky . Netflix seemed to stream better . But , that's not the strong point for these minis . I was just glad it was at least a possibility when I couldn't get access to our main home laptop . The webcam is OK . Works fine , but the picture is not perfect , and it's pixelated with too much movement . But again , it's passable . You'll definitely wanna keep some earbuds or headphones nearby if you plan to do much with audio . The tiny little speaker doesn't do anything justice , and depending on the video can sometimes barely be heard at all . But with earbuds , the sound is great . I updated to the 2GB RAM , but it seemed to work fine with the 1GB , so it's not a necessity . I researched a lot before buying and this one was consistently rated high and reviewed favorably . Hopefully over time these minis will get better and better . It certainly isn't going to compare to your full-size laptop , but it serves its purpose - great for school and travel , and great for not having to fight over the big laptop every day around my house : )
    • 054 4  This is one awesome netbook . Not many netbooks on the market allow for a 2 GIG RAM capacity . A big PLUS ! ! ! Fit , finish and build quality top notch . Battery life was excellent . Watched two movies ( netflix ) and still had 67% battery left . Bought the original one as a gift , now i am tempted to get one for myself !

    • 122 4  The Toshiba NB205 is a fantastic piece of kit . Everything about it oozes quality and is easily the best netbook out there . I have it running Windows 7 home and was amazed at how fast it was ( although I installed a 2GB RAM upgrade to get the most out of it ) . The Toshiba NB 205 is a real winner .
    • 145 4  The Toshiba netbook not only feels like a winner but looks like one , too . The ribbed finish on the case helps to reduce fingerprints to a minimum . All the major positive points have been documented by other reviewers but I have a one fix that I felt needed to be done . If you notice there is a reference to the small plastic panel underneath the unit that houses the RAM . The other , bigger panel , is not referenced . And it has two Torx screws that hold it into place . It's here that the hard drive resides . Since I plan to swap out drives I had to locate the proper Torx bit . I got it at A * E Hardware . The size is T6 . Then , realizing that I would forever have to use this bit I decided to swap out the two screws that are next to each end of the 6 volt battery with the T6 screws . End of problem . To create the dream netbook I guess you would have to somehow incorporate the 6 volt battery into the main netbook body like others have done . The weight is a bit on the heavy side . Also an ability to accept 4 GBs of RAM for 32 bit use would be great . Having said that , this unit seems to work well in any event . Now the elongated case does cause a problem in chosing a case . I found two that work well with this unit . Targus 15.4 Sport CVR200 . Although it rated for a 15.4 laptop it's both light , can carry more stuff and has a strap . The other bag is from Toshiba . The Envoy 1680D . Amazon model # PA1444U - 1CS2 . Also with a strap . A bit more expensive but very well designed . Teamed with the latest Atom CPU and faster RAM it's the most perfect netbook at this time .
    • 152 4  I've had the blue Toshiba netbook for three days now and mostly love it . The keyboard is surprisingly easy to use , the screen is gorgeous , the wizard made getting on my home wireless network a breeze ( and I was nervous about that given some of the earlier reviews ) , and the touchpad is no problem at all ( maybe the other most recent reviewer got a bad one ) . The unit definitely feels more substantial than most on the market , and so far , it appears the battery will , indeed , go for 8 or 9 hours . Of course , given the size , there are some things to get used to . Yes , the bezel is wide , but that's no big deal . But the wide but not very tall screen means you have to scroll a lot to see enough of text and web pages to do any meaningful work . Yeah , that's probably a universal netbook problem , but it's a bit annoying . And my unit does indeed get pretty warm . I added a 2GB RAM card , and this baby gets downright hot right where that RAM's located . Doesn't seem to affect battery life , but I'm wondering if I need to get a chill pad . And of course , I had to get the external CD / DVD player-recorder , too , which brought total price to within shouting distance of a modest full-sized laptop . On balance , this will be great for travel and general basic computing . PROS : - - Stylish , substantial case - - Beautiful screen - - Easy internet connectivity setup - - Great battery life - - Great keyboard - - Good trackpad CONS : - - Needs more screen resolution choices - - Gets hot - - Price , including 2GB RAM and external CD / DVD player isn't exactly mini

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I've been playing with computers for 14 years , and this one as been the easiest to set up and get running according to my wife's wishes . This unit came installed with WindowsXP Home version . The operating system did require several update sessions and a couple of restarts to get Windows current with the latest patches . The processor speed and the available memory ( 1 Gig ) are adequate for what this netbook was intended , E-mail , surfing , internet gameplaying , word processing . Wife is very happy . Preinstalled software is adequate , however I did remove the Norton Antivirus due to performance issues , it is a slight resource drain and the version which is installed is free for 30 days . I recommend installing Avast free home edition . We also removed the Quicken Finance software due to lack of interest . I also installed Microsoft Office 2007 and it runs flawlessly . Wireless network setup was too easy , connected right away after typing in passwords . Installed the drivers for the network printer now the wife can print coupons from anywhere if the house . Movie and media playback is good , Youtube access and playback is good , only problem noted is that the speakers are not quite up to the job , headphones are definitely recommended for car / train / plane travel . I haven't had time to fully test out the batterylife , but this unit has been running continuously for 7 hours now and shows no hint of slowing down.I highly recommend this net book . Youwill be happy with it . Now I can get my desktop back from time to time .
    • 156 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) The battery life is outstanding . The keyboard feels like a full sized keyboard . The touchpad is a great size too , but because it is so close to the keys , you have to be careful not to mistakenly move the cursor . You simply need to remember that this is a netbook . The processor is not very fast but it is adequate . The portability is awesome particularly when combined with the long battery life . It handles Office 2007 just fine . As noted by others , the speaker is virtually worthless . But since I connect with earbuds when watching movies or music , it doesn't make any difference . I looked at a lot of different netbooks . I'm very pleased with my Toshiba . I doubled the memory right out the door too .

Took it on a 24 day vacation to Europe . Light weight and had it in a backpack . Connected to every wifi I found in Europe . But the speaker is not very loud . Installed some new drivers and did little to increase the volume . Earphones can solve the problem . Battery life was great . Went for hours on one charge .

    • 223 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I've been playing with computers for 14 years , and this one as been the easiest to set up and get running according to my wife's wishes .

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) This is a great computer in many ways - sleek , sexy , good battery life , nice keyboard and the very manly name Toshiba written boldly across the case to make it clear that you never even considered a wimpy , pink netbook .
    • 039 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N313 / P 10.1 - Inch Posh Pink Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) This little dynamo has far exceeded my expectations ! I was warned by those how know not to expect a netbook to replace a real computer . My tiny Toshiba does EVERYTHING my large laptop can do - and I can fit it in my purse ! The only thing wrong ( and in my opinion , it's a plus ) is that the sound in incredibly weak . But when you use earphones , it's loud and clear as a bell . The advantage is that I can turn the machine on anywhere and not worry about the noise the computer might make . The battery life shocked me . Yes they said 9 hours , but who belives that kind of hype ? Well , I've tested it , and I'm now I'm a true believer ! I absolutely consider this little machine my best purchase of the year !
    • 081 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N313 / P 10.1 - Inch Posh Pink Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Of all the netbooks this is the one my parents picked for me . I love it and I never have to carry around the plug anymore with the 9 hour battery life . My parents love the hard drive protection as I really move around with my laptop and am not always easy on it . It is great and I got it in pink .

    • 132 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN 10.1 - Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I decided to purchase this particular netbook a few weeks ago after doing much online research and wanted to give it a good run before commenting . I was all set to go with the Asus 1005HA based on CNET's reviews and then I saw a friend with this attractive netbook and went straight to Best Buy to put hands on and check out similar side by side . The Toshiba , hands down , had a better built feel and the keyboard is awesome with the exception of occasionally resting on the tiny tab key while typing , but getting used to that . . . undo is a quick fix while adapting . A number of reviewers have already commented about the tab key . Absolutely love the responsive keyboard and the reflective silver keys in low light which is really handy compared to black keys . . . think about it if you like to type in low light like while watching TV . I can't say enough about the pluses of the keyboard . Pros : * Keyboard is very responsive and the silver keys reflect in low light for easy typing * Battery charge is great - 6.5 hours today with 65% charge remaining * Smudge free case vs . other models with glossy finishes * Feels pretty solid for a small computer and I have no objection to the battery pack on the back like some have mentioned - seems common for the 6 - cell battery builds Cons : * Like many have already mentioned . . . the touchpad can be a bit quirky at times . Since I don't use a mouse unless forced to , this was a major concern . Adapting quickly to the touchpad and updated the driver to Win7 . . . still out on whether it's made any difference but haven't noticed anything ill effects on XP . * Speakers are weak sounding like many have mentioned , but I wasn't expecting much anyway . . . updating the Realtek driver made a slight difference . Hey , plug in your earbuds ! My overall conclusion is that I'm very happy with this netbook because it is very portable and does exactly what it's intended for . If I have only one concern it would be the cost and quality of future batteries which seems to be the curse of these devices .
    • 164 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) My wife uses this computer all over the house listening to Pandora for many hours at a time . The battery life is as stated which is the reason for the purchase . Internet connection works well and the machine is as fast as need be . Overall this is exactly what it states it is . Speakers are a bit weak but it's a mini laptop not a sound machine . With headphones it has better sound quality than my full-sized HP laptop .
    • 175 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN 10.1 - Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) My son is a genuine geek whose dorm room has its own little network . He had been using a handheld but it died . He has a nice Asus laptop but it's very bulky and heavy . This little netbook serves a better purpose than the handheld or his laptop . He can write his programs on it , take notes on it , and listen to some music . It's light and is much better ta haul around a sprawling college campus than a large laptop . And the price was great !

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN 10.1 - Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) After researching several netbooks and reading all the reviews on the Toshiba NB205 , I purchased the NB205 - 312 and am very pleased .

Everything about it oozes quality and is easily the best netbook out there . I have it running Windows 7 home and was amazed at how fast it was ( although I installed a 2GB RAM upgrade to get the most out of it ) . The Toshiba NB 205 is a real winner .

Startup was easy , connecting to my home WEP-enabled network was easy , connecting to public networks was easy too . Basic software included is more than adequate for routine needs . Battery life is good . Computer speed is very good ( I did bump up the RAM to 2GB ) . I love it , and my wife loves it . Highly recommended .

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN 10.1 - Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Pros : light weight , convenient , great battery life Cons : touchpad , display not compatable with Yahoo mail Bought this netbook as a more portable computer to take with us when traveling .
    • 017 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Many of the other reviews here provide valuable details about this machine . I simply want to add one observation which is almost impossible to discover from vendor websites and PC reviews . The screen on the Toshiba rotates through approx . 135 degrees while the screens on many other machines ( e.g . , very popular Asus models ) rotate through approx . 110 degrees . Given the size of these machines , if the keyboard is at a comfortable height for your hands then the screen is considerably lower than in a laptop ( and certainly than a desktop ) . Therefore , for comfortable viewing you need to be able to rotate the screen as far back as possible . This feature of the Toshiba was enough for me to select this model over the competition .

It works very well . Before purchasing this netbook , I had some concern in terms of its touchpad and wifi ability since I read some one star review . I took the risk and purchased it and it works just like what I expected it to . No problem with the touchpad and it catches wifi signal very well . Great design , great camera .

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Can't say enough good things about this neat little computer .
    • 046 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN 10.1 - Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) At the time of this writing .
    • 125 4  I've had this netbook for two weeks now and I have to say I love it . The main reasons I chose this netbook was because of the Ethernet network connector and the 9 hour battery life . Neither has disappointed me . As I hate touch pads or those little doodle buttons , I have a mouse in my bag which is quickly and easily attached and recognized . I have had it connected to many wireless networks and after the initial connection , it will reconnect without any questions on power up , very spiffy . I've even jacked into wired networks and this netbook connects without effort . I have installed Apache , MySQL and PHP without a glitch and still have 131GB left to play with but mostly , I use this netbook to check out Craig's list , e-mail and light surfing while at the coffee shop . While the small screen size takes a little getting used to , it comes quickly . I actually like the keyboard and it seems to fit my large hands OK . I simply can't find a problem with this netbook based on my needs .
    • 165 4  My wife uses this computer all over the house listening to Pandora for many hours at a time .

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I think I read every review Amazon had on this netbook before buying it . I've had it for 4 months now , have used it extensively , and absolutely love it . Thanks , Johnny Chan , for your excellent review - it was a great help both before and after I bought the unit . I've not experienced any of the problems mentioned in some of the reviews - I'm not even sure where they are coming from , in some cases . I bought the unit primarily for travel . If I'm taking a short or casual trip , it was starting to concern me that I was hauling along my big laptop , with lots of critical files on it , just so I could have web and email access . So , I got this to take on such trips , and I keep any personal files ( mostly ) on a removable SD card which I keep on my person . At this point , I'd hate to lose this little guy , but if someone walks off with it , at least they won't be getting any of my personal files . And between trips , I've found it really handy to have this available to grab and do quick reference searches from any room in the house , or to load up some photos and take to a friend's house for a quick brag session . They generally like my photos , but everyone is impressed by the netbook ! I always leave the netbook in hibernate mode between uses . I have no idea how long it can stay there between uses - maybe months - but it boots quickly out of hibernation and is ready to go . Unless I'm really using the machine heavily , I plug it in for a few hours once a week to recharge the battery . As I always do with any new computer , I spent some time fine-tuning the machine when I first got it . Toshiba put a few things on it that I had to remove , but it wasn't too bad - not as bad as many vendors . Things unique to Toshiba that I knocked out were a registration program that ran with startup , their Pinger service , and their TrayBar . I also always knock out a bunch of services that Microsoft always loads on but that I don't want or need , and that might be part of the reason why the performance of this machine is so good for me . I've probably loaded on a shameful quantity of applications , considering this is supposed to be a lower-powered unit . I've got the full Office suite , some higher-end graphics software , several audio and video packages , and my usual suite of security tools . I've only found one application that refused to run - a video ripper . A few apps create a window that is just a little too tall for the squashed aspect ratio of this screen , so you end up losing either the top or the bottom of the dialog box . But , I'm amazed at how well everything runs . It may not have the power of my big desktop , but it easily outperforms the laptops that were hot stuff just a few years ago . I chose not to upgrade from the basic 1 GB memory , and the performance is good . I've noticed that paging starts kicking in if I open a lot of apps simultaneously , but that is rare for me , so I'm glad I didn't waste the money on the memory upgrade . Since I haven't been using the hard drive for too much personal data storage , I've loaded it up with two things : movies and photos . I keep a dozen or so movies on the drive , and watch them on the airplane . The quality is excellent . I've found that watching a 2 - hour movie seems to drain about 20% of the battery life . Although I haven't tried , I guess that means you could watch 5 movies between charges ! And , I take lots of digital photos when I travel , and I really like the ability to backup my photos each night to this netbook . I just pop the SD card out of the camera and into the built-in reader on the netbook , and copy the files . The most helpful critical review currently on Amazon mentions jerky mouse movement . I've had none of that - either with an external ( Microsoft ) mouse or the touchpad . A few reviews mentioned problems getting the unit to initially log on to WiFi networks . I too , couldn't connect until I found that a box was checked that said , Enable IEEE authorization on the wireless connection . Once I unchecked that , I've never had a problem again , and I've logged onto dozens of WiFi connections since , both open and secured . I bought a Case Logic LNEO - 10 Ultraportable Neoprene Notebook Sleeve ( Black ) from Amazon for this netbook , and it is a perfect fit , although the case doesn't have room for the power supply . I even passed through TSA once without opening the case to show the netbook . I just told the officer what it was , and he passed it on through . So anyway . . . I love this netbook , and bet you will too .
    • 009 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN 10.1 - Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) This machine exudes quality . Although it may not have all the bells a whistles of some other laptops ( hence the reasonable price ) , the functionality is very good for all the basics . My bf and I did a LOT of online research and looked at all the online reviews and were impressed , and for good reason . Typing is very comfortable . While the screen is small ( 10.1 inches on the diagonal ) , it is very sharp and clear . It also has one of the nicest mouse pads I have ever used on a notebook - - sorry Apple ! I ordered my Toshiba here on Amazon and it arrived quickly ( plenty in stock vs . the Toshiba Direct website currently ) and in very good condition . There are three ( 3 ) USB ports , one of which can be used to charge any device . I plugged in my Sony Ericsson Z555 into it to get internet access when I am not near a wifi signal , and my phone gets charged in the process ! Great little feature there . Comes equipped with Bluetooh , WiFi , a discreet web camera built into the bezel above the monitor , and a digital camera card slot in the front of the machine . It also comes with some nice and intuitive proprietary Toshiba software for customizing battery / power usage , one for detecting / connecting to WiFi internet connections , and another one for the built in web cam . As I understand , many laptops are a pain in the rumpus when it comes to upgrading memory or other components . Not the NB205 . There are easily accessible compartments on the bottom for future upgrades . And with a brand like Toshiba , I'm sure you can customize this notebook to your liking quite easily and well into the future . But personally , I am quite satisfied with it right out of the box . If you are looking for portability and a loooong battery life ( rated for 9 hours on a full charge ) , you might just want to consider this notebook . I do know that they are available at some Best Buy locations in case you would like to see one in person before you decide .
    • 028 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N311 / W 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I have owned and used a Toshiba NB205 for two months .
    • 030 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I bought this mini netbook for my daughter who is going to college in the fall .

    • 102 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N310 / BN 10.1 - Inch Sable Brown Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) My netbook arrived a week ago , so this is an early review . First off , I love the keyboard . It's the best netbook keyboard I've tried - - and in fact it was my main reason for buying this particular netbook . One warning : Don't buy the black netbook , which sells for around $50 less . It's got a different , nowhere near as good , keyboard . It's offered as one of the options on the same page as this N310 , but it's actually N210 . The only real negative I've found so far is the touchpad and its buttons . If my fingers are even slightly damp , the cursor won't move . And the buttons are terrible , in my opinion . I like to set them so that pressing both together operates as double-click . However , when I try to use them this way , they often don't work . I've tried pressing in different spots ; I've tried all kinds of techniques , and they just don't work consistently . They also don't have a good feel . However , I'll be buying a USB mouse soon , so that should deal with this problem . The netbook comes with a schematic , which is helpful in setting up and getting started , especially if this is a first-time laptop / notebook purchase . However , the mini-manual that comes with it is useless . All it does is warn again dangers . The product manual does exist in PDF format , but you have to find it . Check the back of the schematic under Need Help ? for locating it . It's also available online . I had some trouble connecting wirelessly to my home network . I was able to get an internet connection right away but had a hard time setting up email . For some reason I kept getting told I had no internet connection , even though I did . Finally , I highly recommend the Toshiba netbook sleeve . It's neoprene and stretches nicely to cover the netbook well . No zipper , which I thought I wouldn't like , but the flap is great . • 183 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) The notebook is light but seems well made .
    • 215 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N210 ( NB200 series ) 10.1 - Inch Black Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I read all the reviews on Amazon before purchasing this product and there are already some great reviews on here . I bought this product because I travel a lot and wanted a light-weight , quality portable computer . The negatives are both the positives - small screen size and keyboard . I can type quickly on a full-size keyboard , but make too many mistakes on the notepad . However , when home I can attach the full-size screen , keyboard and mouse because of the 3 USB ports . Yes , the speakers are terrible , but plug in headphones and it's fine . The battery life is wonderful - it's nice to be able to use it at the airport before my flight , the all through the flight without losing power . I chose not to buy the extra memory and so far I haven't needed it . I am using Rosetta Stone software and thought it wouls eat up a lot of memory , but it's sufficient for this .

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I was unable to connect to the internet because the internet cable jack on the 1st computer I received was defective .

    • 161 4  AFTER MUCH RESEARCH , I ORDERED THIS FROM COSTCO LAST SEPTEMBER & I'M SO GLAD I DID . I USE IT EVERY DAY AND IT WORKS FLAWLESSLY . GREAT TOSHIBA QUALITY , GOOD KEYBOARD , FAST START UP AND SCREEN IS AMAZING . . . YOU FORGET HOW SMALL IT IS ! LIGHT ENOUGH TO HOLD ON MY LAP & WEB SURF WHILE I WATCH TV . BATTERY CAN DRAIN FAST WHILE IN STORAGE , BUT IT'S SUCH A FUN LITTLE MACHINE THAT I USE IT ALL THE TIME & JUST KEEP IT PLUGGED IN . PROTRUDING BATTERY ON BACK MAKES IT MORE STABLE AND LESS TIPPY , BUT ALSO HARD TO FIND A FITTED CASE FOR , SO I TRIED A CASE MADE FOR A PORTABLE DVD PLAYER , AND THAT WORKED GREAT . PLAYS VIDEO BETTER THAN MY POWER HP VISTA SETUP . MATCH IT WITH A SET OF HIGH QUALITY HEADPHONES & YOU'LL BE READY TO GO .

I HAVE BOUGHT AND USED MULTIPLES MINI'S AT HOME AND IN MY OFFICE AND THIS RATES AS THE BEST . THE KEYS ARE VERY COMFORTABLE FOR TYPING AND THE OPERATING SYSTEM RUNS SMOOTHLY . THE BEST FEATURE IS THE EXTREMELY LONG BATTERY LIFE OF THIS COMPUTER . I AM A PHYSICIAN AND I USE THIS IN MY OFFICE FOR RECORDING ELECTRONIC RECORDS ON MY PATIENTS . I AM ABLE TO USE IT FOR THE WHOLE DAY WITH ONLY HAVING TO PLUG IT IN FOR A SHORT TIME AT LUNCH . I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR A 10 MINI

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I'm a pretty picky person when it comes to computers and computer parts , so it surprised me greatly that there was very little about this netbook that I could pick apart .
    • 010 4  This machine exudes quality .
    • 026 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I'm a pretty picky person when it comes to computers and computer parts , so it surprised me greatly that there was very little about this netbook that I could pick apart . • 117 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I ordered a Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life netbook after reading the outstanding reviews . I was concerned about ordering online instead of buying from a local distributor but decided that it was the best deal . When the computer arrived , the on / off button did not work . I could not turn the computer on and was planning to leave in four days for a trip . I called Toshiba who told me to call Amazon.com . When I called their customer service and explained the problem the Amazon rep . said they would ship a replacement computer out immediately and they would include a return , prepaid shipping label to send back the other one . I asked her how long it would take and explained my upcoming trip , she apologized for the inconvenience and said they would upgade the shipping to overnight at no additonal expense to me . I had the computer in two days and was able to take it on my trip . The replacement computer is everything I hoped it would be . I upgraded the Ram to 2GB and it plays movies , live feed from the internet with no problems at all . It is fast and the keyboard is wonderful . The only thing I would ask to be improved would be the sound . The speaker volume ( without headphones ) is low , but that would not stop me from buying this again . I LOVE IT ! I have compared mine to other models that friends have purchased and they all like the raised keyboard and the brightness and clarity of the screen . My husband added his college football access for when we travel and says the picture quality is better than his full sized laptop which is a non PC . Thank you Amazon ! I will never hesitate to order from you again !
    • 124 4  My wife loves this computer , I wish I had waited and bought one for me instead of my Acer ( which I also like , but not like this one )
    • 131 4  This replaced a 15.4 laptop computer . What I like : Battery life ! Hours and hours even using wifi and screen on full bright . The extended battery adds a little to the size and weight but is worth it . Screen is bright and clear . Windows XP . Computer is fast enough for general usage with included 1GB of memory . What I don't like . Trial software . I removed most of it and installed my own . Although the screen is great , it would really help if the screen was 720 pix high instead of 600 . This is my only real complaint about the computer . I am very happy with this netbook and the service I received from Amazon .
    • 133 4  I decided to purchase this particular netbook a few weeks ago after doing much online research and wanted to give it a good run before commenting .
    • 211 4  Toshiba has produced a netbook with a very high build quality . Keyboard is just about full size and has a good feel . Battery life has been excellent , on the order of 10 hours . I can run somewhat older 3D PC games . I ordered the one with XP Home to provide a legacy platform for older programs . Is this a replacement for 14 or larger laptops ? No , for serious word processing , I will still be using my old laptop . However , the Toshiba can certainly take its place when I travel .

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N312 / BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) purchased a toshiba 205 from amazon , once again amazon gave me prompt 3 days shipping at no cost . right out of the box , this machine gets an A + from me . the WIFI was inactive by default but thanx to other's who posted their comments about this product , it took me less than 5 minits to be up an running with everything . Great bright backlit LCD screen and minimal 3rd party junk . i bought the 2GB extra RAM but have not even replaced it yet because its running so smoothly with the original 1GB RAM . slim design and a huge battery life , this netbook is a winner in every aspect . please do not buy this product to replace a laptop because that is not what this machine is meant to do . however , it comes close to doing everything that a laptop might provide to you . you could buy an external DVD drive but the price tag goes up and it defeats that purpose of owning a compact , versatile , portable machine . plays . mkv files with VLC just fine . Overall i'd recommend this product to anyone looking for a nice portable netbook with included features like webcam , bluetooth and WiFi . bought the original toshiba neoprene cover for $ 14.99 at amazon and extra 2 GB RAM for $ 26.99 . money well spent on the extras . hope my experience with this product helps others .

    • 141 4  So far , so good . I don't have much experience with laptops , and this is my first netbook . I use my girlfriend's Dell Studio 15 everyday but would never want to carry its weight and size around anywhere . I shopped around for a long time and seriously considered the Asus 1005 , but ultimately was won over to this Toshiba based on the good customer and expert reviews , the nice feel of the keyboard and the attractive exterior . Having read hundreds of reviews of dozens of makes and models , I've concluded that all have a certain small percentage that turn out to be defective . Mine seems to be working perfectly , or as near perfect as any computer can . No problems with the trackpad and only a few hiccups with the wireless connection . The Windows wireless connection wizard insisted that I did not have available networks , but I quickly stumbled across the ConfigFree utility and connected to my FIOS without any other problems . Many potential buyers may want to wait until Windows 7 begins shipping with netbooks , but I wanted an XP OS so I could run old software favorites that won't install on my Vista 64 bit desktop . Finally , I was hoping to get by without an external DVD drive by using my external HD instead . That has worked fine for downloading my software , but it seems that a DVD drive is needed to create a recovery disk .

  • Toshiba Mini NB205 - N313 / P 10.1 - Inch Posh Pink Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Mines actually shipped with Windows XP installed instead of Windows 7 Starter , which is what I preferred anyways .
    • 090 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N313 / P 10.1 - Inch Posh Pink Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I orderd this little pink netbook to use for recreational purposes when traveling as our 17 laptop is just too heavy to bother with . It is lightweight and convenient to use . I can hold it in one hand and it will easily fit in my purse . I have downloaded tv shows from tivo to go , game and ebooks from ereader . I should have plenty of entertainment for long plane rides . This is a great little computer for email , web surfing and on-line shopping . AND it is pink - what could be better ! !

    • 162 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB205 - N313 / P 10.1 - Inch Posh Pink Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Well , I have used the machine now for over two weeks and I am still amazed that it works so well , at least at the level of my use , in terms of office programs , adobe photoshop ( opens quite fast ) , internet and a bit of videos .

    • 192 4  I've been using this NB205 for over a month now and I have not found any significant problem so far ! It works very well . Before purchasing this netbook , I had some concern in terms of its touchpad and wifi ability since I read some one star review . I took the risk and purchased it and it works just like what I expected it to . No problem with the touchpad and it catches wifi signal very well . Great design , great camera .
