Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305-N310 10.1-Inch Netbook - Black Onyx

  • 039 4  This computer has been just what the doctor ordered but the 1GB of memory makes it a relatively slow computer so I ordered the 2GB memory upgrade that Amazon recommended to order with the computer so I ordered it . Guess what ? It was the wrong memory chip and didn't fit into my computer , the slot was on the wrong side so I had to return the memory to Amazon and could not find the correct memory on Amazon so I ordered it from Best Buy and it worked . Now that I have the correct memory in the computer it works well and is great for travel . I have been satisfied with just about all of my Amazon orders but this one so beware of Amazon's recommended add on products because they may not be compatible with the primary product you ordered .
    • 120 4  Bought it to surf in bed . Size and key placement is great . Speed is a bit slow . It got too hot on my legs , so I sent it back one day after I got it . I knew I would be charged for the shipping , but I was dissapointed that Amazon charged me an additional $50 to return it . I guess it is a re-stocking fee . I don't think this was made clear in the return policy .
    • 217 4  thought this would be a cheap investment but realized i should have never bought another windows based product . very slow out of the box and the very next morning i had a blue screen - - - stay away . . . . . . . . . Amazon was very good on getting it returned with my full refund

  • 059 4  I've responded to a few reviews , but haven't got around to reviewing the netbook myself , so I'll throw my two cents worth in since I've now had it in my possession for about 12 hours . First of all , I decided to go with the N310 model because I hate chiclet keyboards and I love the color black , so that ruled out every other model . Another reason was that I had a windows 7 ultimate license doing absolutely nothing so I thought I would install it on this netbook using a usb flash stick after backing up the xp version that was already on it . I also installed a 2GB kingston memory upgrade the moment I got it because I knew windows 7 , even though in my opinion is the best OS to come out of Microsoft , is still a bit of a memory hog in comparison to XP , so a fresh Windows 7 install , a bit of searching on the web for the drivers , 2GB's of RAM and I was good to go . Just to let you know , had to go to toshiba's U.K website for all the windows 7 drivers . The drivers are labeled internationally , so no problem if downloading for a U.S NB305 . Other than that , everything works great under Windows 7 and contrary to what others are experiencing , pretty quick by netbook standards . The keyboard is a pleasure to type on , doesn't feel any slower typing on this than on my Dell XPS M1330 and the touchpad's size is perfect . The screen is really bright , kind of reminds me of the LED screen on the M1330 for being visually strong . I thought the 1024 X 600 size was going to be an issue , but it really isn't . The size of the screen fonts are good for my eyes ( I ain't getting any younger ) , so the 1368 X 786 screens that are floating about on some of the newer netbooks might have made everything too small and that would have been frustrating trying to make everything look bigger even though I was getting more real estate . Haven't got around to checking the validity of the battery life , but I don't see any issues where I would run out of juice . It looks like its going to be a great traveling companion because of its size , battery life and it's solidly built . So , my advice for anyone thinking about buying one of these 10.1 inch netbooks , no matter what brand they pick , is buy 2GB's of Ram right from the start , spend quality time learning how to do a fresh windows install getting rid of all the bloatware that comes with it which can slow things down big time . Also run it in high performance mode when watching videos . I've had no issues with Divx movies , youtube , Hulu full screen struggles a little , Mp3 ' s are no problem , and running a slingplayer app perfectly with no hiccups from a slingbox streaming a cable box 9500 miles away and also netflix sd streaming works great . Just don't have huge performance expectations and you'll come to love everything about these netbooks .
    • 035 4  I read alot of reviews about note books before deciding on this one . A few people complained about the speakers . . . all i can say is if you want good speakers buy a stereo ! the speakers are not bad considering the size ! This notebook is great ! it is snappy and fast and if you buy it for a specific reason and stay focused on that you will always be happy . I actually like it more than my home computer . I have the windows starter 7 on it and want to keep it that way . I did a few updates but it slowed the computer down and I actually reset it back to the box and am happier for doing it . I bought this to type a manuscript and review photos ( no editing ) and it has become one of my favorite toys in the house and I truly dont care for computers all that much . I can type and listen to music and review photos all at the same time and it doesnt lag at all . and lets face it . . . its really cute ! I love the keyboard . feels sturdy , and is just fun to type on . oh yeah . the battery really does last a long time . . .9 hours no problem ! Thanks toshiba !
    • 048 4  I bought this at a local store late last year and I have been extremely satisfied with this product . The battery life in unbelievable , I can go for a week of regular usage forgetting to have to charge it . The raised keys on the keyboard make the transition from a regular keyboard to this smaller version easier and makes it really conformable . The capabilities of this netbook are extreme ( I have used it as a media center with Boxee for my T.V ) . I would recommend this for a student or a traveler but , this netbook is truly capable for anyone .
    • 068 4  This netbook is average . The main drawback is a battery life of 7 hours . I expected more ( from the specs ) . I'm running Ubuntu , and even with Ubuntu the battery life is so so . Screen is too glossy , it's basically a mirror in sunlight . Other than those two problems , a great netbook if you don't need more than 7 hours of battery life
    • 083 4  Love the size , love the color , love the speed . Love it , love it , love it . Great vendor too .
    • 112 4  I was considering purchasing an ipad , but this little netbook meets all of my needs and costs much less . Love the large keyboard and mouse pad . Great battery life ( 8 - 9 hours . ) I splurged and bought an extra gig of memory - - very easy to install .
    • 124 4  So far I have not had any problems . I really enjoy the convenience of this little netbook . No issues . Battery life is good . Features are as promised .
    • 161 4  This is a Great Product for it's size it does everything I need it to do and more .
    • 187 4  I just purchased this model 305 . Just by seemingly looking at it too hard , I got an error stating that Vibration has been detected . The had drive disk head has temporarily been moved to a safer position . Then I tested it to try and recreate the error . I moved it very gently , much less than standard airline turbulence . Again , I got the error . This unit will work as long as it stays parked on a rock-stable desk and you don't type with any amount of enthusiasm . Other than that , don't buy this unit , especially not for travel .

  • 073 4  I bought this netbook in July ' 09 for my birthday . Unfortunately I got it from a place other than Amazon.com , so I paid more . I use it every day for hours and I have never had one problem with it . I was conflicted about whether to get this netbook or a Kindle - now that Amazon offers a free download of Kindle for your PC I have both in one piece of equipment . I downloaded the app and have been using it for over a week with no problems . There are so many books I can download for such reasonable prices I feel like I'll never be hurting for a good book again !
    • 080 4  Toshiba Mini NB305 Netbook Review As I type these words on my new Toshiba N305 Netbook I feel as if I have somehow entered a new age in technology . The keyboard is impressive to say the least and the machine seems quite sturdy . The raised keys respond well with tactile feedback and are spaced far enough apart to prevent typos due to minor finger slippage . I am inspired by the Toshiba design and ease of use . I am sitting on my bed right now and the keyboard is tilted forward enough so I don't have to exacerbate my bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and the lid / screen tilts back far enough that not unlike the best sexual partner , the angle seems perfect . After fiddling about in the computer store with the three models I had narrowed my search down to , and giving up with the tiniest netbook , the lady's purse sized Sony Vaio which has a keyboard that is just too tiny . . . the fifty or so dollars more in price went to the Toshiba for keyboard , 250GB and Bluetooth capability for the easy transfer of files and syncing between the netbook , the desktop and the handheld cellular device . The two top contenders were the new ASUS EEE Seashell PC with Bluetooth and the new Acer One also with Bluetooth . The ASUS has a nice thin and sleek shell and the keyboard is seemingly improved over previous models . I liked the ASUS raised chicklet or island style keyboard as well as the Toshiba's but even though they are both plastic , the Toshiba seems metallic and sturdier and the keys take a nice punch well . I was less impressed with the Acer One keyboard which seemed flat and lifeless compared to Toshiba's . On taking the Toshiba netbook to work I was made aware of one big negative fact : netbooks are still too heavy . This is 3 pounds which slung over my shoulder after a long day is like a ball and chain . I want a netbook that isn't going to cause any back strain . I want a one pound netbook like the Sony Vaio , however that keyboard would not be satisfactory to me so at this time , so that and the promised 9 plus hour battery life are why the Toshiba is my first choice . Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life

  • 089 4  I've had this netbook for over a month now and have had a chance to use it on the road , which was the primary reason for this purchase . It is quite the little dinamo . As suggested in previous reviews , I just went ahead and purchased the extra gig which was easy to install. It started right up . . no issues . Fast a very reliable . The battery life if more like 9 hours , but still plenty for a long flight . Love the surface on the cover , little if any fingerprint marks . Only complaint is once again the lack of sound . It was too soft and yes earphones help . . Need to work on this Toshiba .
    • 108 4  I just got back from my first trip with this little computer . With such a long battery life I checked the cords in with my luggage , never brought them out ! The computer , in it case , went through security in it's case with no problems . It was light to carry and very easy to use . The screen , with all the ads was a bit small , but doable .
    • 142 4  I have a desk top and lap top , but I love my netbook it is light weight and just the right size for the times a have to stay in bed . It lets me keep up on my mail and keep up on facebook wtih family , friends and grandchildren . The hardest thing was picking a color outside of that it is a great buy .
    • 156 4  I received the Toshiba NB305 yesterday , and I have nothing but good things to say about it . It has installed all of the programs I have thrown at it so far with ease , and it multi-tasks very well . The construction is superb , it really feels like a quality machine . The keyboard is spacious and very satisfying to type on and the touchpad provides plenty of room for navigating . This netbook is definitely worth your money . If you are on the fence at the moment I say , go for it ! You will not be disappointed .
    • 176 4  I use this netbook to connect to hotspots . It's very light and works well . The minor flaw is that the icon on the tool bar which indicated if was connected has disappeared and I am obliged to go the control panel to connect . It's a minor inconvenience , but on the whole I am very satisfied with this product .
    • 189 4  I ordered this item from amazon . About ten days went by no netbook.I called Amazon customer service they were very helpful. They shipped another one had my netbook the next day .
    • 191 4  I really like the keyboard and the quality of the netbook . The only issue is that it comes with Windows 7 Starter version which is not great .
    • 210 4  This netbook seemed like a perfect buy when i first got it but after a week or two everything just started to freeze . The internet was too slow and kept on freezing every time i opened inernet explorer . It does have a good battery life but for that battery life , performance is definately missing .

  • 132 4  OK , so it is not a desktop replacement laptop , but I didn't buy it for that . This was my first netbook purchase & I searched the internet for the best one to get . The exterior case seems to be pretty fingerprint resistant , unlike the glossy exterior on some units . The keyboard seems to be sufficiently sized as well . The screen is small , but that is the way all netbooks are . Battery life seems real good as well . My only negative comments are that there is not an option to order it w / 2 GB of RAM instead of 1 so I have to take the 1GB card out to install a 2GB one to expand the RAM because there is no open memory card slot . The second negative is that you must have BLANK 8GB thumb drives ( 2 ) ( I had a 16GB almost blank drive but it wouldn't let me use it ) or USB DVD burner to create your system restore backup . You can't create the system restore on a folder of an existing USB hard drive or on a folder on a networked computer . I had to borrow an external DVD burner to create mine . A month later , I am very happy with my purchase . It does what it was intended for very well .
    • 020 4  This absolutely would be the Perfect Computer if the Plastic wasnt so cheap . It doesnt feel cheap , but the silver finish below the keyboard is coming off in three places . ive only had this for about a month . Otherwise though , this is a great computer . I can squeeze 10 hours of battery life out of it and the keyboard is really great . And or all you people out here that are annoyed about not being able to change your desktop background , google stardock MyColors and download it from the legit page . Its not Malware , and i have used it to change my background on starter many times .
    • 104 4  My Previous laptop is a Toshiba . I have had it for seven or eight years and have been very satifided with it . So it was a no brainer to get The toshiba Netbook . It serves my needs very well , I use for e-books from Kindle , Sony , Adobe , and the public library . I watch TV episodes I missed . I use for the internet . I download and listen to audiobooks and music . And I can carry it with me as easy as a book . It also as has a long battery life . Jim Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life
    • 106 4  My wife is thrilled with it . One negative , sound is very weak . Had to download differant audio drivers and get a external USB speaker . I have found many complaints about the audio being weak . Seems well built and I would still recommend it .
    • 170 4  This is my first netbook and the reviews were so great I thought it would be a slam dunk . I upgraded to 2 GB of memory but it is still pretty clunky . The speed is not the biggest issue , that would be the keyboard . When the keys are pressed it does not register on the screen about 50% of the time . This make typing very time consuming and filled with typos . It is such an issue I am not sure I am going to keep the machine . I am also looking at seeing if it is possible to change the keyboard . My advice is to go into a store and try it out before you purchase .

  • 149 4  So far so good . This netbook purchase was dedicated for business use away from the office . Since it is not overloaded with extra programs ( some existing extras removed ) it boots up / closes down very quickly . The battery life is almost unbelievable so day long use without the charger / power cord is no problem . Works just fine with 1G memory so no need to upgrade . The only thing that is less than usable are the worthless speakers which is really the case with most netbooks and lower end notebooks . Sound is fine with headphones or with powered speakers . For me since I do not plan on watching much video on this unit is why a gave it 5 Stars . Oh by the way the keyboard is great for a netbook .
    • 122 4  great little netook , great for traveling . . . light weight excellent for carrying with you to the airport . Full-size keyboard a plus . Would recommend to anyone .

  • 154 4  I highly recommend this netbook . The keyboard , screen & mouse pad / keys are excellent ; the styling is very good . Performance was a bit sluggish until I upgraded to 2GB of memory and now it is more than satifactory . The battery life is outstanding , although it did decrease about 10 - 15% after I added the additional 1GB of memory , but no complaints here . Overall , my opinion is that this is one of the best netbooks available .
    • 085 4  We are a retired couple and we were tired of packing our 15.5 laptop on trips . The small Toshiba is perfect size to take traveling . We use it to check email , make reservations and look at the web . We have two Toshiba 15.5 laptops and had no problems with either , this small one has been everything we expected - - perfect for us .

  • 208 4  I rate this 2 stars mainly due to battery life can not get more than 7 hrs .20 mins . I bought this one because it said up 11 hours battery life . Does not matter which mode it is in that is the best it will do.Purchased it about 2 mos . ago.For that reason could not recommend buying it.Don't know if I just happened to get a lemon but mine will not even get close to 11 hours .
    • 118 4  I like everything about this computer except for the speakers , they are absolutly useless . If you buy this computer , you might as well get a headset right away-you , ll need them . Best feature is the battery life .

  • I upgraded to 2Gb memory module and Windows 7 Home Premium immediately . So , I never ran this device with only 1 Gb of memory or just Windows 7 Starter Edition . Pros : - It is very lightweight and I have no problems whatsoever throwing it into a bag to take with me . - It feels solidly built . - It has exactly what I need in an ultraportable and nothing more . My biggest mistake so far is trying to move my flag from my XPS to the netbook . It is so portable that I just want everything on the netbook . I could do that , but personal issues dictate that I do not . However , the reason I even mention this is because of what I learned when I tried . . . . - I tried to run high definition video on it ( from MP4s stored on the hard drive ) , but it did not go well . ( But , I subsequently later discovered that the laptop has 4 different power profiles and I had initially thought it only had 2 ( eco and Balanced ) . Since discovering that it has a High Performance profile I have not tried again to play video ( but even if it does not play it well that's ok , did not need it to do this ) . - What led to me to realizing that it had a High Performance power mode was that I was playing music in iTunes and it was BAD ( static and stutter ) . When I checked Task Manager I saw that the audio playing was pegging out the system . I found that hard to believe so I went looking for answers and discovered the High Performance mode . When I shifted to this mode , then I was operating at around 40 percent of system CPU resources . - Just a comment on these last two points : I did not buy this netbook to be a multimedia powerhouse , but it was only natural to me that I discover what I could and could not do on it . I did not expect to play video . I did expect , but do not require , that it play MP3s . I share my experiences above for whatever value they may have for you . - I have never used another netbook , but its keyboard seems like the best possible design you could expect in a device this small . Keys are tactile , feel solid , and it takes up the entire width of the device . - The white cover is durable , does not show fingerprints ( I was worried it might be like my Dell - but it is an ideal finish if you are looking for White , I assume the other colors are the same ) . Cons : - These netbooks feel like such a step back . I want the portability , but man I feel like I am in the dark ages as far as power goes . But , to be fair , this is supposed to be an email / word processor / web browser type of system . The limitations I have witnessed are when I ask it to do multimedia , so objectively I know that should not be a knock - but when my iPhone can play MP3s with no issues I subjectively get a little down when I think that I have to go to High Performance mode to get the NB305 to do the same . - I do not like the placement of the touchpad mouse buttons . They actually are on the front edge of the laptop , and that just bugs me ( maybe only because my Dell XPS is not this way - but I think it is more fundamental than that - I just don't like that kind of design - I would have preferred even just a quarter-inch lip ) . - My FN key is either not working , turned off , or somehow just disconnected from the Toshiba Flash Cards . It was working and then I think I did something in the manner of some keystroke combination that has disabled it or at least disassociated it with the Flash Cards ( Flash Cards = a nifty visual aid that Toshiba provides that shows Function Key options on screen ) . Evidently , I am not the only one , as I see notices on the Toshiba community mentioning the same problem , but so far I have found no fix . This is minor however , I'll live . - The screen is too small . I understand the width , but the height needs to be at least 768 ( it's not , it is 1024x600 ) . The reason for my complaint is that so much software out there today expects a minimum of 768 vertical pixels . I have already encountered one software package that has told me outright I will have a problem , and I have experienced incoveniences in many others ( excessive scrolling - just to go down a hundred pixels so I can press an action button - I am running TurboTax right now and it is so irritating to have to scroll just to get to the action button that is just a hundred pixels below the bottom edge of the screen - makes you want to pull your hair out ) . - Any other reservations I feel are not worth sharing as they all relate to how I feel about using such a small device as compared to using a full-sized laptop . And that's just not fair to Toshiba , so I'll leave that off here . One thing I do wish I could find is a good portable keyboard . I looked but so far have not been impressed enough to buy . Anyway , I have no buyer's remorse . I feel I acquired what I set out to purchase . Only question for me , over time , will be whether my money might have been better spent on a MacBook Air ( larger keyboard , larger screen ) . But it's 3 - 4 times as much , just not sure I can rationalize that amount .
    • 007 4  Interesting to read all the reviews here . The ratings go from a 5 - stars down to 1 - star . Makes one wonder , doesn't it ? So , like all others , I did my homework and was on the fence between 4 or 5 netbooks ( Acer Aspire One A150X , Asus EeePC 904HA , Dell mini 9 , HP Mini 1000 , Lenovo ideapad S10 , MSI Wind U100 - 016 ) . Then , my son got a NB205 from his girlfriend for his birthday . I asked him to let me work with it for a little while and I was hooked . I touched , fondled , but not spindled or stapled about a dozen display netbooks all over town . For my needs and my taste , the NB305 is absolutely perfect . Mind you , I have a specific use for it - I work at different sites on different days and have to be able to pull out a computer quickly , enter data , generate billings and reports , do some quick research wirelessly on the Web , send and / or receive some quick email . Like that . It's a business tool for me . For simple communication , scheduling , IM-ing , texting , or looking up contacts I use a smartphone . For serious computing I have superfast desktop PCs with large monitors at both my home office and work office . So , when I went looking for a netbook , I knew exactly what I wanted and what I was going to with it . A netbook is not a PC , not a powerful laptop , and not a mainframe . It's a small tool that does what it needs to do and it does it well . People who complain about slow processing , inadequate graphics acceleration , poor sound , strange keyboard layout , limitations of the OS , etc . either did not do their homework as well as they thought they did , or are unreasonable in their expectations . But , if you do understand what a netbook is for , I don't think you can do much better than the Toshiba NB305 - N410 . At least not at this time and not for this price . I am not going to describe all its features , since many of the reviewers have done that admirably . You should read the reviews at CNET , PCMag , LaptopMag , Consumer Reports , etc . Definitely go to a site where you can twirl the thing around in 360 so you can see it from all angles , see the ports , and appreciate the layout . Better yet , go to a store and handle it . Some people complained about receiving units DOA . Others about esthetics . There is nothing in the World that pleases everyone . I don't know how many of these things are assembled everyday . In statistics , one in one hundred is considered zero . So , even with the strictest quality control there will be some potential lemons . Mine arrived in mint condition , fired up and worked like a charm within a few minutes and it has been functioning flawlessly for the last several months . I got rid of all the bloatware , boosted the RAM to 2 gigs for less than $50 , installed the software I needed , got a folding full-size keyboard , a small wireless mouse , a light foldable elevator stand and , voila , I have a nice little ergonomic workstation on the move . I already had an external DVD-ROM drive for installing my own software . I can work a full day without worrying about needing to recharge the battery ; I hook up automatically to any available WiFi network , do all the work I need to do , all in comfort , no fuss , no muss . I am eminently pleased with the NB305 ' s performance , its utility , its esthetics ( I dislike those shiny things that are magnets to finger prints , so I won't get an iPhone either ) , and its comfort . The keyboard is excellent , if I choose to use it , the screen is large enough for my trifocals , I don't get any glare , but then I don't set it up with the screen facing lights or a window . The NB305 is a perfect little device that does exactly what it's supposed to do and does it better than most others in its class . Personally , I am delighted with my purchase and the more I use this little machine the more I like it .
    • 010 4  Let me start by saying that I read nearly every review on Amazon for this product before buying it . Some of the reviews actually seem to be for related Toshiba netbooks which have slightly different features . I am not sure if this is due to users posting reviews in the wrong place , or Amazon aggregating reviews for closely related products , but potential customers should make sure the reviewer is actually reviewing the correct product when considering their praise or criticism . In any case , if you are considering a netbook , and you actually KNOW WHAT A NETBOOK IS , and what it should be used for , you will be happy with this netbook . I have owned it for several days now and I am loving it . Here are some of my thoughts on the subject : 1 . The keyboard : It is great . I have not yet sat down to serious long hours of typing . I will though , as this netbook will be my main tool for finishing my thesis and eventually writing my dissertation . For the page or so I have written on it , it has been extremely comfortable . I have found in the past that I can adjust pretty well to typing on weird keyboards . I had a first gen EeePC and I was able to get used to that horrible thing . This keyboard , however , required no adjustment . I was typing pretty easily from the beginning . 2 . The screen size : Works for me . It is a little cramped on certain websites , but a quick F11 to make the browser full-screen seems to usually do the trick . 3 . The speed : Here , and on point 4 ( OS ) , is where my review may not be helpful to all readers . I immediately purchased the crucial 2GB memory upgrade . It actually arrived before my netbook did . I started up the machine right out of the box and ran through the first time setup before shutting down and installing the RAM , though . Everything seemed to be decently responsive . Nevertheless , people concerned with speed should read the next portion of my review where I talk about . . . 4 . The operating system : Windows 7 Starter seemed to work fine . Since , however , I am a grad student and get somewhat of a discount on Microsoft products , I opted to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional pretty soon after purchase . I have to say , I did not notice a huge leap in speed going from 1GB to 2GB of RAM on Windows 7 Starter . Yet when I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro , there was a noticeable overall improvement in the performance of the machine . I cannot explain this , as I am pretty sure that Windows 7 Starter has the same architecture as Windows 7 Pro . If anything , you would think the stripped-down Windows 7 Starter would be designed to operate efficiently within the limited resources of a netbook . In any case , I am not knocking Windows 7 Starter - - it is the standard for netbooks - - and it seemed to work fine . I just noticed an improvement when I upgraded . 5 . other software stuff and notes I also installed MS Office 2007 Pro from the web with no problems . That and web browsing are going to be my main uses for this netbook . I have yet to attempt an install of Adobe Acrobat Pro from an external DVD drive , but I will soon ( the external drive is old , from my first-gen EeePC , so I hope it works ) . I have watched a lot of streaming Netflix content on this without any significant problems . I think that is a pretty good measure of the machine . 6 . Battery The battery life is amazing . I am reasonably sure it doesn't quite live up to the ideal 11 hours under my normal usage . Still , the battery lasts so long I don't even really know what to do . I am used to having to set a routine to charge my gadgets , like plugging in my iPhone before I go to bed , etc . This machine , however , has so much battery life left that it is actually confusing me . I am guessing for my usage , I'll be charging it every 1.5 to 2 days . 7 . Speakers or The Worst Part of This Netbook Everyone has said it on here and I will repeat it . These speakers are pretty miserable . Not even just the speakers , but the maximum volume level as well . I knew it going in , so I cannot complain too much . I am able to watch Netflix stuff at night lying in bed , but only just . I am sure if there was any background noise ( a fan , etc . ) it would not cut it . The key though , is that this is a netbook . The combined forces of physical constraints ( size and weight ) and pricepoint make anything more substantial than these speakers nearly impossible . My advice is to get a good set of headphones , and also perhaps a nice compact set of speakers . I have a folding JBL On Tour speaker unit that is amazing for its size . I actually use it for most of my television watching on a regular basis . 8 . Aesthetic appeal I find this netbook quite beautiful . Though it is listed as Java Brown I do not think that is an accurate color name . I would have been totally happy with java brown , but the color of this netbook is more metallic . It is more like a burnished deep copper or bronze color on the outside , with closely spaced diagonal lines etched into it . When opened , the deep copper color which surrounds the screen is more glossy and the diagonal lines are a pattern of slightly lighter color , not etched . Very nice overall . It also just feels sturdily built . In sum , I am very satisfied with this netbook . I hope my review helps !
    • 012 4  While many consider themselves tech gurus , I'm an end-user . My concern is is what is it going to do for me ? Buying a netbook came after many months of deliberation and review . My first intent was to buy a e-reader , but after seeing few at the local coffee shop and other gathering places , I considered that I would get more versatility with a netbook , and still have access to reading , if that was really what I wanted . But what to buy ? Like most purchases , my first reviews started on YouTube and followed the Internet trail . Spend any time at all , and it soon becomes apparent that the Toshiba NB305 and the Asus Eee 1005 are always at the top , both interchangeable from one moment to the next . After getting teched-to-death I eventually decided ( all things being equal ) there were four things important to me that seemed to stand out with the Toshiba over the Asus : 1 - The keyboard . Toshiba claims that their keyboard is closer to a full-sized keyboard and I tend to agree . It only took a short time for me to get the feel of the Toshiba board and I am quite comfortable with it . I'm a very rapid typer and I didn't want to waste time hunting and pecking . 2 - Durability . The Toshiba feels more secure . I bought the brown version , and the aluminum face around the keyboard and the cover strike me as being sturdier . I have no basis for whether it is or not , but first impressions . . . . . . . . . the Toshiba also has a feature that puts the hard-drive into a locked or safe mode if the computer is jarred , and I understand that is a beneficial function to me . Makes sense . 3 - Fingerprints . I know , a pretty lame reason for buying one over the other , but the truth be known that when I looked at both models for the first time I couldn't help but notice just how badly smudged the Assus was . That certainly wasn't a problem with the Toshiba . Combine it with the overall feel of the Toshiba and I really felt that the Assus was more cheaply built . I may be overreacting , but that seems to be a comment made by numerous reviewers . 4 - Battery life . Both state that you can get 10 - 11 hours of battery life , and you may . At this point , I have gotten around 9 - 10 , but I can't say if that is standard . I was loading programs onto the system and that may have attributed to a drain on the battery . I downloaded a battery gadget and it says my battery life is around 8.5 . . . we'll see . I've not completely drained the battery and really don't foresee the time when I will . Four consistent hours on a computer will surely suffice for me . What don't I like : Keep in mind that a netbook is what it is . Windows Starter won't allow you to change the wallpaper on your screen ( unless you want to get really hi-tech and likely really screw up your computer ) so what you see is what you get . No biggy . I've taken it to some local Wi-Fi hangouts and it connects easily to the Internet . The internal mouse works fine , but I'm not a big fan of those things . . . I'm working on it . . . so I have connected a regular one . It works fine and I have the option of one over the other . The bigger pain is that they don't have a recovery disc . The Assus has a function that allows you to restore you computer by striking the F9 button several times , but no such luck with the Toshiba . Also remember that you don't have a CD drive . You have to add an external one if you intend on adding any programs from discs . You can get one for around $60 bucks , but you may only use it only a few times . I should have thought of that . I got around that by loading a program onto an external drive on my larger PC , downloading it to a flash drive , and using that to load onto my netbook . Time consuming , but it worked . I don't know if that process will work on every program . Right now my netbook is fun . I'm happy with the purchase of the Toshiba , and feel like for $50 more , it was worth it for the physical comfort I get over the Asus . I watched some YouTube and some streaming video , and it worked fine . My general purpose for getting it was to access the Internet and word processing . For that purpose , it does fine .
    • 013 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I have owned several notebooks and desktops in my lifetime ; my most recent notebook gave out a few months ago after three years , and my desktop computer is a couple of years old but still holding strong . I wanted a netbook for portability and as a second computer option ( in case the desktop is ever temporarily offline for any reason ) . I started seriously looking at picking up a netbook last year , back when the n280 chip was standard . None of the netbooks at the time quite lived up to my expectations in terms of features and form . I decided to wait for the new chipset . After quite thoroughly comparing over 15 different netbooks all running the new 1.66ghz Intel n450 chip , I ordered the Toshiba NB305 - N410WH and after nearly a week with it I feel very comfortable with my purchase ; it's my new best friend . ( For what it's worth , the runner-up was the Asus Eee PC 1005PE-PU . ) I love the texture of the NB305 - - it's not glossy so it doesn't stupidly attract fingerprints . I don't usually like white things , especially for electronics , but this one carries well ( I figured the white would go nicely with the beautiful silver keyboard ) and I don't see it getting dirty easily like most white things do . I have installed more software than I expected a netbook to be able to handle , and it has managed my multitasking admirably . Occasionally I ctrl + shift + esc myself to check the task manager and manage whatever's running up the CPU or RAM processes , but I do that even more often with big powerful desktop computers . Internet has been very snappy , and I have had zero issues with setup and ongoing connection . I spent the $50 to purchase 2gb stick of RAM . I'm pretty sure that's made a good difference , though the machine was keeping up quite well running multiple apps even on just 1gb of RAM . I will probably pick up a $20 - 25 bluetooth usb adapter at some point . The touchpad has been very properly responsive . Check the settings / update your synaptics touchpad drivers if you want to make sure to have the full featureset of gesture controls ; I love them . Of course , as all the pro reviews have noted , the keyboard is excellent ; it looks great and feels great . The screen is really good despite its small size . The 1024x600 is better than I expected . For the most part , I'm ( surprisingly ) perfectly content not to be on a bigger screen ( I've been otherwise used to a dual-monitor setup with monitors 21 - 24 , but I've felt no urge to connect the NB305 to an external monitor ) . The sound quality of the speakers is rather weak ; fortunately , sound quality with headphones plugged in is good and there are interesting / effective sound customization features that are easily adjustable . I'm estimating my battery life so far to be at roughly 8 + hours at pretty much maximum performance ( aside from my screen , which I like at ~ 4.5 brightness level even when plugged in ) . I found Starter Wallpaper Changer , perfect little app that provides precisely what Microsoft shamefully blocked . I also found instructions online to change the background image of the login screen . So my netbook is now highly attractive both outside and in . : ) Though my desktop computer is still technically the more powerful machine , and I'll certainly still turn to it for more hefty tasks , I've already been using my NB305 as a primary machine , and I see myself potentially using it more often than my desktop from here out . I am very pleased with my NB305 . Now I'm on a quest to find the perfect case ( s ) for my netbook . ( I want to be able to take it with me everywhere ! )

    • 016 4  I have to say right off the bat that I have this netbook as well as a fully loaded , majorly powered , Dell XPS laptop . So , I can't help but compare the two , even though I know objectively that is not fair . So , while my mind knows that they are apples and oranges , I believe my commentary may at times be somewhat shaded with subliminal comparisons . I purchased the netbook because I found that the weight of my XPS laptop was preventing me from taking it with me everywhere I went . As an aspiring writer , I feel the need to have my word processor always at hand so when inpiration strikes I can capture it . The Toshiba NB305 ( I have the white version ) fits the bill . Notes : I upgraded to 2Gb memory module and Windows 7 Home Premium immediately .
    • 018 4  I love this netbook . It is my first netbook . I bought it recently and received it 6 days ago . I also bought and promptly installed the 2 gig memory card . I have been using computers for personal pleasure since 1986 ( an apple 2e was my first pc ) . One can never have too much ram . I am strictly a user . I don't mess with programing . I also don't play electronic games . I mostly use the internet browser , word processor and the spreadsheet program . I also use the internet for shopping and keeping up with the family ( facebook ) and for education . I buy ebooks , so I use my netbook as a reader . I buy music and have used this netbook to download and listen to blues , jazz , and pop hits from the 60 ' s and 70 ' s ( I'm 63 years old ) . But , I mostly use my ipod for my music . This netbook has done a superb job for me . The keyboard feels good . This was the one feature I worried about . I weigh 300 + pounds and have large hands . I worried needlessly . I find the keyboard comfortable . It has a nice feel to it . I use headphones on this pc because I use it in public . The music sounds great . I use my imac at home . My wife and I are retired and we get out of the house almost every day . Unless I have errands , I go to barnes and noble because they have good service good coffee and free wi-fi . It is a pleasure to carry this lightweight pc . I failed to promptly create the recovery disks . Big mistake . I installed the linux os , jolicloud . It seems to be a great product . However , my installation did not play well with windows . When I restarted I did not have access to windows . Jolicloud ran great . Except for a couple of windows-only programs I can do without windows and live with linux only . But I need windows to run those windows-only programs . There were less costly solutions but I took the easy way out . I visited the local naval exchange store and bought a Windows 7 upgrade . I runs great on this netbook . Installation required a call to ms support because I did a clean install . This is my first experience with windows 7 and I like it . I was prepared to download and install all the drivers but windows 7 was great in this respect . I have not come across any feature that has required a driver install . I just knocked on wood . One upside to the clean install is that I did not have to remove all the extra junk that comes with a new pc . This makes the cost of the windows upgrade almost worth it . I should have bought the toshiba NB305 - N410 . For and addition $50 I would have gotten a larger hard drive and window 7 starter . I rarely use more that 3 programs at once . This is a limitation on windows starter . I also installed linux mint . No problems with it yet . I am writing this review using mint and openoffice writer , a great program . I use it on my imac also . I use ms word but prefer openoffice writer . I have used other linux distros ; linux mint seems to be the most polished . So , create the recovery discs promptly . Also , if you can afford the additional $50 , buy the NB305 - N410 . Lastly , remember that this is a netbook . The screen is small . I go from a 24 inch imac to a 10 inch netbook . This has not been a problem for me . And I have poor eyesight . Bottom line : I love this netbook .
    • 019 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) This absolutely would be the Perfect Computer if the Plastic wasnt so cheap .
    • 021 4  I've owned this netbook for a couple weeks now . I've reviewed the machinery before , and agree with people who have said the following : - I'm an excellent touch-typist , and I love the keyboard ; - I love the battery life , keep it charged at home , take it with me everywhere , leaving the cord home , as I just don't need it ; - I'm fine with the touchpad , but treated myself to a Logitech cordless mouse with forward and back browsing buttons ( Logitech improved this A LOT over my home cordless mouse , in that the USB insert hardly sticks out at all so it's easy to leave in all the time ) ; - screen resolution seems just fine to me ; - I gave in to the fast side and put a 2G ram upgrade . Did I NEED it ? No , just wanted it ! Things seemed to run fine on the included 1G of ram ; - I've done fine with Vista on my laptop , and I don't see anything wrong with Windows 7 Starter edition . It was apparently built for this kind of application , doesn't draw much power , seems quite responsive to me , so . . . ? - finally , if you're worried about fingerprints - get a life ! Sheesh ! ANYWAY . . . What I'm thrilled with is the ease of taking this thing ANYWHERE . I brought work here with me to the book store - a new , favorite habit of mine . I buy coffee , relax , hook into the free WiFi , and work . Life is good ! I take this to my friend's house , and work if she's busy , again linking to her wireless network . I even prop this on my lap when I'm watching TV in bed and write or surf . So , what I'm commenting on is the LIFESTYLE change this netbook has made for me . So , mechanically it is wonderful and easy to put into my briefcase or book bag and work or play wherever or whenever I want ! What a pleasure ! GO FOR IT !
    • 023 4  I too have carefully researched my decision to add a netbook as a in-between addition to my iPhone and Macbook Pro . I completely agree with the below reviews that this netbook really shines and is worth the extra money . I almost went with Asus but trying one out in-store , I did not like the trackpad and how cheap it felt in your hand . This netbook exudes quality in the hand and performs so well , you forget it is a netbook . I am only writing to add a warning to those where the following issues may be an issue . While the keyboard is full size and quite comfortable and the trackpad does have multi-touch , there a couple of issues that might be a problem for some . First the keyboard keys have a different responsiveness on the lower row of keys right next to the trackpad , especially the space bar . These keys take more pressure than the other keys which can throw you off at first . You have to make a mental note to press a little harder or you will be missing space keys , periods , commas , etc . If you use more than one computer , this takes a few moments of adjustments each time you are entering a lot of text but it is a flaw that can be overcome . Second , the trackpad and the multi-touch is a little sensitive . I haven't found multi-touch specific adjustments for the pad , just an ability to turn it off and on and your normal control panel mouse options . The trackpad can sometimes hang-up or scroll very quickly . These issues plus the Windows 7 starter don't make me regret my decision to buy this netbook , they just make me appreciate my Macbook even more . I would suggest trying one out in store first and try scrolling through websites you use often . Also , try typing a paragraph on it to determine if it is the right choice for you .
    • 025 4  I've been using this for about a month now , and I'm definitely satisfied with my purchase . It's a fantastic netbook : Windows 7 runs smooth and fast , the chiclet keyboard is roomy and comfortable , and all the other major elements are polished and functional . My issue with the NB305 , is the battery life , not so much while the computer is in use , but when it is hibernating or sleeping . When you're using it , the battery lasts a long time especially in so-called eco mode which adjusts the power settings automatically for maximum battery life , as opposed to maximum performance . Strangely , the issue I have with the battery , which is my only real gripe about the NB305 at all , is that it seems to drain inordinately large amounts of battery while it is in standby . If you simply close the screen when you are done with any given session , which I generally do , you'll find the battery significantly drained if you open it back up a couple hours later . Even in hibernate , it seems to eat power . You have to go through shut down before packing it up , and then you will find it lasts much longer . Obviously , this isn't a deal-breaker , it just requires you to adopt that new ( and probably good ) habit of turning everything off before packing it up . Startup is quick anyway , generally less than two minutes , so it hasn't been a huge problem . I still recommend this Toshiba , and don't regret my decision at all .
    • 032 4  After quite a bit of research on various types of netbooks , I went with the Toshiba NB305 . After 2 weeks of use I'm very happy with it . The most striking feature of the netbook is the chiclet keyboard . It's fantastic , and much more comfortable than keyboards I've tried on other netbooks . The touch pad is also excellent . It is quite large for a netbook and has some nice multi-touch features . This netbook is extremely lightweight and the battery life is as advertised . For normal usage such as web surfing , listening to music , and word processing , I get 8 - 10 hours of battery life . Toshiba software makes it easy to alter the power settings , depending on whether you want max battery life or increased processor performance . The design of this laptop is very appealing . I bought the white version and it looks very nice , mildly contrasting against the matte silver keyboard and stainless strip covering the hinge . Also I very much appreciate that all the surfaces on this laptop are matte , rather than glossy . It keeps it looking nice and clean as opposed to smudgy from fingerprints . My one gripe about this computer is that it comes with Windows 7 Starter . What a crappy operating system . Among ( many ) other limitations , it restricts the number of applications you can run concurrently and simple features such as changing the background art are unavailable in the starter version . So basically you need to upgrade as soon as you get this computer . That makes the cost of this laptop $500 , including the cost of upgrading to usable version of Windows 7 . Personally , I would have preferred a full version of Windows XP as in the Toshiba NB205 . Operating system aside , this is an excellent netbook and I would strongly recommend it over the Asus Eee PC 1005HA or Acer 532H netbooks .
    • 033 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook ( Personal Computers ) I love netbooks , have the very first in the Asus Eee PC series , but wanted to upgrade to a bigger screen and keyboard . I was specifically looking for a netbook that still came with Windows XP since I didn't want to shell out even more money to upgrade from Windows 7 Starter to the full version . ( A big rip-off , if you ask me , and one that keeps the price tag artificially low . ) I'd already tried out this baby at the local Best Buy and loved the keyboard , the touchpad , the display . . . all beautiful . Except when I booted mine up for the first time , right out of the box , the touchpad didn't work . At . All . I figured that maybe I had to register with Microsoft first - - stupid me - - and tried to make do with the keyboard , but I eventually got to a screen from which I couldn't navigate away from and the keyboard completely froze ( as did the screen ) . Finally had to take out the battery - - not once , but twice - - to get the thing to shutdown . Tried to work through the registration again , but no go - - and so I finally had to rebox this lovely little netbook and send it back for a refund . ( One thing I DO like about dealing with Amazon ; they are fast about this . ) Here's the thing : Could I have called Toshiba and tried to work through the problem ? Sure . I went online before I called it quits and saw that this is a KNOWN issue for which you can download a patch , etc . But doing so requires that you get a bloody connection to the internet which you can't do if your screen freezes at the very point / screen where you set up your internet connections ( which is what happened to me ) . I'm not above fixing my own problems ; if you're going to deal with Microsoft , you get used to this . But I expect that a computer manufacturer would take care of a known problem before shipping out a machine . So - - I wanted to love this . I really , really did . My very first LAPTOP ever was a Toshiba Portege . But I didn't love this ; I got disgusted and now I've taken my money to Asus for a 1005HAB . In pink . At a much lower price than the Toshiba . ( Yes , I know the battery life won't be as good , but buying a new battery still won't make the Asus as expensive as the Toshiba . ) What was it that Caesar said ? Caveat emptor . Right on , bro .

    • 036 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I do have a little bit of buyer's remorse with this little guy . After the retail price of the netbook , add the $50.00 for more RAM , and then the $120.00 if you want a clean install / upgrade of windows 7 home premium or $80.00 for just the upgrade , I could have purchased a full blown laptop with 4g of RAM , Windows 7 Home Premium , and larger display for the same if not cheaper . I have to remind myself . . . . netbook , netbook , netbook . This is a long term purpose device to have laying around to surf the net , travel with , etc . Not to handle my media . Just do not make the mistake of thinking this will replace a laptop , it definitely does not . Pros - Small Design - The White is super classy looking - Light Weight - Nice Keyboard - Nice Track Pad - Standby USB Port ( Will still charge a device if the netbook is in sleep mode ) - Nice Display - Nicer , Better Build compared to other netbooks I looked at . - Battery life is great so far . Had it on for about 5 hours now since I received it yesterday and it is only half way down . Cons - Windows 7 Starter is a absolute JOKE . - Cannot do dual display to extend the desktop to another monitor among many other short comings . - Has some flex to the screen if you hold it like a book in between your arm carrying it . - The bottom becomes almost scary hot , be careful if you are using it in bed or on the couch with a blanket in your lap . And men , protect the jewels . The vents are on the bottom and your bedding can cut off the air circulation . - Price ( As noted above ) - I know people have mentioned that the NB is fast , but I did add additional RAM ( 2g ) total and it isn't as fast as I would have liked . I hope that it is because of the limitation that Windows 7 Starter has built in and the upgrade to Home Premium will really make it shine . Overall I am happy with the purchase , but if it wasn't for the great battery life , I would have purchased a current laptop and not a last gen laptop ( aka . netbook ) . If you want a casual device to surf the net while watching TV this is great . If you want a media power house or something to play DVD's , get a real pc .

    • 041 4  . . . yet here I am writing a positive review about a Windows machine . Why do you buy a netbook ? Because it's small , lightweight and cheap . While I would have loved to buy a 13 MacBook Pro , the netbook is 4x cheaper & almost 2 pounds lighter . The review is only 4 stars because this is a netbook and is limited by definition . But this is a nice netbook and I recommend it if you can live with its capabilities ( or lack thereof ) . Understand , you don't get what you don't pay for . Software : I find reviews complaining about netbooks only coming with Windows 7 Starter to be about as silly as Apple complaining Flash is proprietary so they won't support it on the iPad ( like they haven't used proprietary in their past ) . This is a slow chip on a tiny machine - why bog it down ? While there are a few things I can't do with Starter that I'm finding very frustrating , on the whole the OS is adequate . It works better than previous versions of Windows I've used , and I was able to connect to my wireless network and add two peripherals with no problem . None . Same thing for Microsoft Works - it easily opened programs created in Microsoft Office ( on the Mac ) , and for me the document portability issue is more important than a fully featured Office suite would be . Email : the Windows Live Mail is easy to set up and works quite intuitively . My one complaint is that the calendar is buried in the email program - this means no direct access and no sync with iCal . I will be looking for a shareware calendar program . Web browsing : the first thing I did was to download Chrome - I.E . still doesn't support all css . Some pages load slowly , but others ( especially Flash based pages ) load faster than they do on my more powerful Mac . The hardest thing for me was getting used to that short screen - most web pages were not designed for this weird resolution so lots of scrolling is involved . That's also the reason why you should question what software you want to use on this computer - can you work with it on such a tiny screen ? Though I am an artist , I've yet to try any graphics program fot that reason . Hardware : did I mention slow . . . the one place it would make sense to add a feature & raise the price is memory . Swapping the chip for a 2 gig chip showed a noticeable speed improvement . I bought whatever Amazon said everyone else was buying , and putting in the chip was quite easy . If you buy a netbook - buy the memory too - it makes a difference . The specs for all netbooks seem to be very similar - they vary by design and installed memory more than anything else . The construction is good , and the case design has a textured cover that makes it easier to hold on to and will hide fingerprints if thats a problem for you . The most outstanding thing about this computer is the quality of the image on the screen - very sharp & very good color . Toshiba also supplies detailed color / contrast controls for the display that I haven't needed to use yet , but it's good to know they are there . The keyboard is comfortable , but I have small hands . My one problem with the keyboard is that the raised bar on the F & J keys isn't raised enough and is too far on the bottom of the key so my hands often start typing from the wrong position . Once the correct keys are found , no problem at all . This is the first trackpad I've ever liked using - I'll still use a mouse but it won't always be necessary . The multi-gesture support is great to have because of how much scrolling is needed for web browsing , though sometimes I have problems with it . This was the only thing I had to go to the manual to figure out how to do . Battery - I've yet to drain the battery even after leaving it unplugged for two days . I haven't traveled with it yet but I'm looking forward to not having to search the airport for a free socket .
    • 043 4  I'll be brief , since others have provided quite a bit of detail . I bought this machine + 2 Gb of memory ( Crucial ) and the Toshiba optical drive . This is actually the second copy of this setup I bought from Amazon . The first one , purchased months ago , was defective ( I'm quite sure the disk drive was bad ) and I returned it ( Amazon is very good about this sort of thing , by the way ) . I am writing this review to praise this machine , but also to caution anyone intending to run Linux on it , as I am doing . I have Linux running successfully on this machine , but it took some doing . I am using the beta version of Slackware 13.1 , together with a custom-built kernel , because there is a problem with process scheduling with the stock kernel . Before settling on this , I tried Slackware 13 ( the distribution I run on my four other computers ) , Arch Linux , and Ubuntu 10.04 on this machine , and ran into show-stopping problems with each of them . The effort was worth it , because the machine works very well . But I am a ( recently retired ) computer professional with many years of Unix / Linux experience and the kind of fiddling I had to do is undoubtedly beyond the ability of people without the type of background I have . Having said that , I think the Linux problems are simply due to the fact that N450 machines haven't been around that long . In a matter of months , you'll be able to throw an easy-to-install version of Linux , such as Ubuntu or Mint , onto one of these machines , and it will work out of the box . We're just not quite there yet . As for the machine itself , it seems well made , nice bright display ( 1024 pixels wide is fine , but 600 high is pretty minimal ; using smaller fonts , if your eyes can handle it , helps ) , very good keyboard . It does get a bit hot , as others have mentioned , but not enough to be a problem for me . I'm not crazy about touchpads , but the world seems to have settled on them . The tap-to-click idea is one of those things that seems clever on paper ; in practice , it will drive you nuts . It can easily be disabled in Windows and pointy-clicky Linuxes like Ubuntu . With stick-shift Linuxes like Slackware , you've got to mess with / etc / X11 / xorg.conf to turn this bit of silliness off . Battery life is as advertised . Performance seems fine for the non-heavy-duty sort of use one might reasonably contemplate for a netbook - - web browsing and mail reading . Videos play well , though the sound is pretty weak . But this is a very inexpensive , secondary machine for mobile use , the thinking man's iPad for less money . If I want room-filling sound from a computer , my desktop machines serve that purpose . For what this machine was designed for , it appears to me to serve the purpose admirably .
    • 049 4  After a few days of use , here are my thoughts : Pro : - Faster than I thought . Very usable for web and about 90 + % of the stuff I do on a computer . Actually , a bit faster than my dual core ( which is probably suffering from OS decay after several years of use ) . - Seems well built . - Bright screen . - No fingerprints ! Nice matte finish . - Love the size and portability ( true of all netbooks ) - Bloatware and Win7 starter were not as bad as I thought . Easily removed the trialware and have found Win7S to be just fine . Doesn't periodically snap my picture as some have said ( maybe they listend and removed that feature ) . - Screen size is not a big problem . 1024 is wide enough ( barely ) and 600 just requires more scrolling than normal . In my view , worth the tradeoff to get excellent portability . - Keys have a good feel . Trackpad is huge ( but I prefer mice ) . Con - Gets hot when plugged in but runs reasonably cool on batteries . - Tab key way too small ( I use tab a lot ) - Ironically , the keyboard may be too spread out - I often hit the S instead of A key . Other : - I purchased the 3 year $59 warranty . Notebooks always break . - Did not upgrade to 2G RAM - seems to run fine on 1G - Removed the Norton trialware and downloaded the free Microsoft Security essentials which seems to work beautifully . Overall , I love the thing . A few quirks but certainly no dealbreakers . I keep a file server in the basement for printing , large storage and backup . Also for burning CDs . The netbook is a great satalite machine sitting on the tableside by the couch .
    • 051 4  Very happy with purchase . I bought this because I needed a portable computer to use around the house . I find myself using it in bed a-lot instead of having to go to the computer room . It's small and compact , I purchased a small mouse to go with it . My husband has used it a few times too because it's so lightweight and simple to pick up and access . The battery life is very long and I only need to plug in overnight so I'm happy with this . I do wish the screen on the computer was bigger , but that was one of the main reasons I purchased this computer I wanted something very small and easy to use . My husband did not understand why I wanted such this small computer with no DVD burner ( or other major features ) , but now that he sees that I just want to surf the web and check FB and e-mail . . . he understands . So he's happy that I'm happy . I love when he picks up my computer and uses it sometimes , he's very savvy about computer gadgets so I know he likes my little computer too . My only complaint is that I did not purchase the pink colored computer . . . but overall I'm very satisfied with this purchase . My other complaint is that the computer came with a lot of unnecessary programs that my husband had to uninstall before I started using the computer so it can go faster .
    • 052 4  This little Toshiba is a lightweight portable laptop , for use around the house or on the go . I looked at all of the different mini notebook brands at the mall and took a liking to this Toshiba , model NB 305 , mainly for its display . It was the most expensive of the bunch but I was determined to stand my ground and get the one I like instead of being subdued by a cheep price . I have been burned in the past with a crummy display that just became a daily annoyance . So this time I was determined to get a nice display where I didn't have to keep moving my head to get a good viewing angle . By the way , Amazon has a better price than at the store . The Toshiba comes with the new Window 7 Starter , which is lowest version of windows but , interestingly enough it is more than adequate and far better than Vista . Surprisingly , for the Starter version , they took away the ability to change the desktop colors . I found this shocking but now I am completely OK with it . There is nothing else that I had trouble with . I uninstalled Windows Update and Virus checkers , and installed an alternate web browser Mozilla Firefox , and email tool Evolution to interface to my gmail . The display is only 600 pixels tall . This is same with all mini notebooks except the Sony which costs twice as much . I ended up having to move the windows toolbar , which is normally at the bottom of the screen , to the right side of the screen . This gives you more usable height . It's OK , you'll get used to it . I also learned to use the windows-D button pair to see the desktop . The keyboard has flat key caps instead of the traditionally indented keys . It feels awkward at first , and you will probably start pecking away with just two finger , but eventually you can even do full ten finger typing , as I am doing so right now . The battery is long lasting , at least three times what I had on my laptops in the past . I no longer feel stressed out that the juice is about to run out . I already have a desktop , and I bought this notebook for my son . The notebook sits on the coffee table in the TV room and I find myself using it instead of my desktop . It is just more cute and more convenient . It is plugged in , and I can choose to put it on my lap with or without the cord due to it long battery life . I watch TV , and when something or question pops into my head I can google it in seconds . Overall , this is the best computer I ever had . The Sony may be better but the Toshiba gives good performance at an unbeatable value .
    • 053 4  This is an awesome little machine with an excellent keyboard , display , and battery life . It's also really light compared to other Netbooks / laptops . I researched , tried out , and delayed buying a Netbook for quite a while , but I am really sold on this one . I am a writer by trade , and I need a really good keyboard and display . This is the brightest screen you can buy , and the Chiclet keys seem to be the best keyboard out there besides the real joy of owning a Mac keyboard . I really wanted to buy a MacBook Air but couldn't afford it . If you are like that , this is a great second best option if you are willing to suck it up and use Windows . My only reason for not giving it five stars is that it comes with Windows Starter 7 and not the full-fledged version of the program . I think it is completely lame of them to load it with this piece of crap operating system . At first , I thought this would be fine because I am by no means a power user . However , I have found it totally annoying and frustrating because you can't do simple things like change your desktop photo or download certain programs like DropBox . I am using OpenOffice on it just fine though . Also , some of the Toshiba-specific programs are really invasive and annoying . I also had to de-install the Norton program because it kept coming on every 30 seconds to coerce me into buying it . I have also been peppered with lots of little Windows error messages that , fortunately , do not transmogrify into anything bigger . The processor drags a bit when using ooVoo video conferencing software - - something I didn't expect given the rhetoric about the fastness of this machine . So , I am now trying to decide whether to spend the [ . . . ] for the Windows upgrade or the [ . . . ] for the extra memory . But , all in all , this is a wonderful little machine that I would totally recommend .
    • 061 4  Admittedly , I do not own this netbook . I am actually just about to order it . So I , obviously , can not review the item yet . This quick note is in reference to some of the other reviewers that have put in their two cents . Why is everyone slamming this netbook for windows 7 starter ? Were you not aware of what you were ordering ? No , that can't be it , it is in bold letters right in the title ! ALL the current netbooks are offering this OS ! I love that some of the reviews state that they want to send it back and get an Acer ( or whatever ) . . . unless you order the older version of ANY of the netbooks , you will get Windows 7 STARTER . If you want the full version , you will either have to pay for it separately , or get an actual laptop . Will I like Windows 7 ? I have no clue yet . But , I certainly will not fault this netbook if I don't ! If I am too worried about it , I would go to a store and actually browse around it a bit prior to purchase . . as any intelligent consumer would . You can not fault a product for what you are clearly made aware of . No one can spoon feed you common sense ! It is up to you , as the consumer , to be a big boy / girl and do some research ! Now , do I blame Microsoft for this obvious money gouging ? Umm , yes ! Lay the blame squarely where it belongs ! EDIT Just received the netbook today . I love it ! ! I won't go in to all the details and specs , since I think that has been done several times over . I'll just add my basic impression . The build is solid , does not feel cheap at all . The java brown looks classy and different and I love how no fingerprints show-AT ALL , unlike all the others out there on the market . The keyboard is wonderful , nice feel to the keys and responsive . Best keyboard I've seen on a netbook Again , solid feel . I was a little worried , never owning one before , that the small 10.1 screen would bother me . . . not at all . It's a nice viewing area , comfortable on the eyes . The portability is awesome ! I would feel comfortable carrying this around everywhere . Now , if finding the perfect bag to carry my new best friend in was as easy as choosing this particular netbook ! All in all , my initial impression of the Toshiba is thumbs up ! Just be sure your expectations are realistic to what a netbook can / can't do and do your research . This is hands down , IMHO , the best there is on the market today .
    • 065 4  I bought this laptop for traveling , I plan to travel for awhile , so needed a lightweight computer mainly to look up hotels and transportation , keep in touch with family members using email and chat services , browsing the web , listen to music , and storing pictures . I was looking for a laptop that had good battery life so I can use it on trains / airplanes / buses . So far I am pretty satisfied . This laptop lets me do all of the above . It is very lightweight and compact and fits right in my backpack . The web camera and wireless works well . The keyboard is very comfortable . A few drawbacks are that laptop gets kind of hot if I'm using it in my lap or in bed . When I'm running 4 + programs at a time , it seems the battery can't last that long , maybe only 6,7 hours at very most . With all the programs open , I experience some lag . But overall it is a good travel laptop . and it's very easy to work around the drawbacks .
    • 067 4  I just received my Toshiba Notebook , its greet deal ( $290 from Amazon ) in its kind . The one thing that doesn't match the description post it by manufacturer is the battery life , mine works for almost 7 hours while they said its 11 hour battery . Easy to set up , easy to use . I recommended this product for frequent travelers and other users whom like small and light notebooks
    • 081 4  I bought this from Microsoft for [ $240 ] about 3 weeks ago and have been using it everyday since . This version of the NB305 has bluetooth and Microsoft signature tweak , Which improves performance a little . I like it except for the unresponsive keyboard which requires some serious pressing dead in the center of the keys to register . This is a cheap , poorly made chicklet keyboard . In hindsight I should have bought an 11.6 ' ' netbook instead . PROS : Great battery life Handle videos surprisingly well ; plays 720p from youtube with no problem Microsoft Signature tweak works ( my version ) Hard drive bay takes bare drive - - requires no hard drive caddy . This makes it a little easier to upgrade the hard drive . CONS : Keyboard is unresponsive and require hammering dead in the center of the keys to work . This kills the experience for me . Comes with only 1GB of RAM . Forcing consumers to pay $50 for 2GB of RAM for better performance is just uncool . What can you do with the original 1GB ? Nothing . You throw it away . It's wasteful and environmentally unfriendly . It's OK if you must have a 10 ' ' netbook . Otherwise , consider an 11 ' ' netbook .
    • 090 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook ( Personal Computers ) I bought this netbook to take notes in college . For those who will be doing a lot of touch typing , and are used to standard keyboards . . . this is not the chiclet keyboard for you . Don't get me wrong . I love chiclet keyboards - I bought this netbook for the chiclet keyboard . However , the chiclets are rectangular instead of square . Small design difference , but I find that it's enough to make me accidentally miss some keys . The keys do not push in very far - this is standard in chiclet keyboards , but this keyboard really doesn't push in very far . Therefore , I tend to miss keys . I can't type at my usual 90ish wpm , but I can still go fast enough to keep up with the professors . Functions such as turning the wifi on / off , screen brightness , etc are accessible through the keys Fn + F1 , F2 , and so on . However , I find that on occasion , the menu does not load , and I do have to restart the computer for access to this menu . Other than that , the netbook is beautifully designed , and works perfectly . The frost white design is nice and I've received lots of compliments . It's a matte cover , which is great - no fingerprints on a glossy surface ! I like the fact that there are separate buttons for left / right click , and a non-studded surface for the mousepad - this is what made me choose this netbook instead of the Eee PC . However , had I known about the keyboard , I would have gone for the NB305 - N310 instead . Same netbook , except that it has a standard keyboard , is only available in black , and is $50 cheaper .

    • 092 4  I'm very glad I bought the Toshiba NB305 . It has all I required in a netbook - 10 screen , N450 processor , good aesthetics , easy to type-on keyboard , two separate mouse buttons , good batter life ( I'm getting about 9 hours ) , and priced under $400 ( use Bing CashBack ) . I did a little comparative shopping with other highly rated netbooks . They all have very similar specs and tests show that other netbooks may actually perform a tad better than Toshiba . But to be honest , as a regular user and after using for a few months , it's very difficult to even notice any difference in performance with Asus , Sony , Samsung . So I went with Toshiba since it had the best keyboard and mouse track and buttons ( for my big hands at least ) .
    • 095 4  I bought this netbook one week after it came on the market , as soon as I heard the battery had been redesigned with a smaller profile . I'm in love with the chicklet keyboard . It separates the keys and my hands never slip off of home row . The keyboard did take about two days to break in - - the keys were unresponsive some of the time - - but now everything is very smooth . I'm a speed typist , and I find this keyboard much easier to use than my kids ' 15 laptop with the traditional flat keyboard , where I always felt like my fingers would lift up the keys or or lose their place . The battery lasts a VERY long time . The operating system easily accepts all kinds of attachments without a hitch ( such as a wired mouse , a wireless mouse , a DVD drive , my e-reader device ) . Set up was a breeze and the large hard drive is a boon for loading the various software that I like to use . For those who care about looks , the Java Brown ( chocolate ) color is different , unique , and gives a feeling of elegance . My friends really like it . Is there anything I would change ? Well , I'd like it to be about a pound lighter , but that would make it even more expensive . I think the shut down phase takes a little too long , but that's minor . At least the wake-up from sleep mode is fast . This is my first netbook , but I've been shopping around for quite a while . I'm very satisfied with my purchase .
    • 098 4  I've had this netbook for about a week now , and I have fallen in love ! Not only is it absolutely GORGEOUS ( particularly in Frost White which makes it look so sleek and timeless ) , it is lightweight and a dream to use . The overall build of this netbook has exceeded my expectations . Nothing about it feels cheap . The body is made of a heavy-duty plastic , and the top trim consists of a gorgeous chrome that definitely sets it apart from all other netbooks . The cover has a matte , textured finish ( no greasy fingerprints ! ) that catches EVERYONE'S attention . In fact , the first time I took it to one of my lecture classes , I caught so many people looking back just to steal a second glance at its beauty . ; ] The keyboard and touchpad themselves are the ones to beat . I have pretty long fingers , so finding a keyboard and touchpad that was close to standard was a necessity for me , and this netbook definitely delivered . There are , however , a few odd things about the keyboard . The tab key is quite small and the ~ / ` key is positioned to the left of the space bar as opposed to the top of the keyboard . Alas , these differences are minute , and I have adapted to them already ( which is saying a lot since I've had it for no more than a week ) . The wi-fi on this thing is amazing ! It connects quickly , STAYS connected , and delivers great browsing speed which allows me to actually STUDY at coffee shops rather than wasting time trying to constantly refresh and reconnect . : ) In regards to battery life , let's just say this trumps my laptop EASILY . I've only had to charge it ONCE and I've used it every day ( for web-browsing , typing documents , and streaming ) for the past 5 days ! Also , unlike its predecessor NB205 , the NB305 does NOT have its 6 - cell battery protruding from the back ( which was one of the key factors that made me not want to buy that particular model ) . Instead , the extra weight from the battery was moved to the bottom of the netbook which , to me , is great because it allows me to get a better grip on it while carrying it around . If I had to point out any cons , it would be the webcam and speakers . The speakers are NOT up to laptop / desktop standards , and the webcam is exactly as advertised - 0.3 megapixels . Considering this IS a netbook that is really meant for connectivity and mobility , these features really are not bad and are actually standard compared to other netbooks out there . In my opinion , the sound is decent , and if you really can't stand the softness , this can be easily fixed with a set of headphones or portable speakers . As for the webcam , it delivers suitable ( not amazing ) images and video that you could add special effects to such as frames for any special or random occasion . Remember , if you want portability , then there are of course going to be compromises . If you want crisp images and booming speakers , you'd probably be better off NOT looking at netbooks . In short , I couldn't be more satisfied with this Toshiba mini . BEAUTIFUL , lightweight , durable , incomparable keyboard / touchpad , fast connectivity , amazing battery life , and [ did I mention ] BEAUTIFUL sets this netbook apart from all the others out there . Yes , it is on the higher-end of the netbook market but , in my opinion , it has every reason to be . And once you get it ( notice I say once not if ) , you will feel as if each extra cent was well worth it as I do . Happy web-browsing !
    • 101 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I own a Mac but when I got hold of an iPhone ( and an Airport Extreme ) I soon found myself enslaved to wireless websurfing and email . I also found myself going blind surfing a 3.5 screen . I seriously considered the iPad , but because I occassionally do have to perform actual work I decided a netbook or small laptop would be a better choice . Sure , my first choice would be the Macbook , which I probably will still do when I win the lottery - but I researched all the available netbook brands , read all the reviews , and watched all the prices . I debated endlessly about dealing with a 10 screen , Windows 7 , and a mini-keyboard - but in the end found I worried for nothing . I really , really really like this netbook . And my eyesight is gradually recovering . Pros : 1 ) Battery life - regularly > 10 hours with pretty constant web browsing and WiFi - this definitely exceeded my expectations . It also charges in an entirely reasonable period of time . 2 ) Keyboard - I actually like it . I touch-type and have no difficulty with the size or placement of the keys . 3 ) Display - the 10 screen isn't as bad as I thought it would be . It is somewhat narrow top-to-bottom , but the scroll function on the touchpad and the zoom function help . 4 ) Set-up ( aside from recovery media creation ) was effortless . 5 ) Installing the 2MB RAM was a cinch - started up and recognized the upgrade without any problem . 6 ) Everything works . And though I'm not doing anything significantly challenging on it , it seems pretty fast . Cons : 1 ) Toshiba Recovery Media Creator - there is of course no recovery disc provided - you can create recovery media easily on two USB drives , but be warned - you will need both a 4GB to hold the 1.8GB Applications files and a 16GB to hold the 7.9GB System Recovery files - a 2GB and an 8GB drive will not work . This necessitates a minimum of $45 in USB drives - not such a great deal . I suggest that you buy the $50 portable DVD drive instead and burn your recovery discs . I understand you can't use the DVD drive to watch video unless you significantly upgrade Windows 7 , however . Wonder how much that costs ? 2 ) Windows 7 - guess I've been spoiled by Mac OS , but to me Windows 7 seems both a little limited and somewhat juvenille . It's also a little less than totally intuitive - for instance it took me several days to figure out where additional tabs go . But ultimately it does what I need it to do . 3 ) The case - while it is attractive ( I bought the Java ) - it is unmistakeably plastic - a minor complaint and undeniably Macbook envy . All-in-all , I'm glad I purchased the Toshiba . Other than the necessitated investment in USB drives , no regrets here .
    • 102 4  I own a Mac but when I got hold of an iPhone ( and an Airport Extreme ) I soon found myself enslaved to wireless websurfing and email . • 107 4  This is my 3rd Toshiba product , and my 1st Netbook . I have it for 3 months now . Pros : As expected the Netbook is very reliable , super portable and has an awesome LED screen . The netbook performed everything that I needed it to run , no problems . I did upgrade the RAM to 2GB Gaming Ram from Corsair in order to support a program that I use for Geneology which hugs the RAM . After the upgrade I had no problems running multiple windows , while my geneology program was running . I absolutely love this equipment , I am selfemployed and I am out on the road . I can tether my cell to the netbook ad keep going and I don't need a lot of space to do this set up . The chiclets keyboard makes it easy to type without touching the wrong key , in other products the keys are close together and bigger but you press one key and two go . I added the Open Office Suite ( [ . . . ] # for documents , slide presentations , spreadsheets , etc . and the Microsoft Security Essentials # MSE ) anti-virus protection , both are free and the netbook has performed wonderfully with both . Last but not least this product is light , which is a big plus for me . Cons : For people with big hands and fingers this is not a good notebook , the new 13 one might be a better fit . This product is perfect for me I have female medium size hands ( that is my glove size ) . If you want to make sure and you have access to a retail store try the laptop keyboard out . If you are going to be using programs that use a lot of RAM upgrade the RAM or get a mini with more than 2 GB of RAM .
    • 130 4  The Mini NB305 does exactly what I what I want and need it to do . Battery life is insanely good - - I recently took it to a conference full of Mac Books and every single one of them was plugged in after only an couple of hours . The Toshiba ran unplugged for the full day ( 8 hours ) , while charging my cell phone ! No surprise that running a bunch of processor intensive programs drains the batter faster . Even so , watching several videos I still got 5 + hours out of it . Keyboard is small , but not too small . Some of the keys I commonly use ( end , home , del ) are awkwardly placed , but it's not a deal killer .
    • 134 4  I just got this computer yesterday so it's a little early to really tell , but let me say a few things . First , the speakers suck . I use Google Voice and trying to listen to messages is really difficult , with the volume turned all the way up . Maybe other sources will be louder , but this is one use I definitely planned for and it's going to be a small problem . I also had an initial problem connecting it to my mobile hot spot on my Verizon Palm Pre Plus ( which is a free service right now ) but as soon as I got a Verizon tech on the phone , it miraculously fixed itself and now works fine . Not as fast downloads as my desktop but pretty darn good . Finally some kudos for Amazon . The netbook was supposed to be delivered on a Tuesday and by the end of the day when I checked I discovered that supposedly an attempt had been made , but somehow I missed it . To me it was impossible , as I was home when UPS said they'd tried , and no note was left on my door , so I assume the driver forgot or something and made up a time . I called Amazon and a very nice woman called UPS and did her best to make things right , and failing that , I got my $16 delivery reimbursed immediately . Since I couldn't be home the next two days , I made plans to pick it up from a central office at night , but then UPS left the package by my back door , something they said they couldn't do , which was fine with me and it saved me a long drive . But again , Amazon's customer service was great . Finally , typing this review on my netbook was a pleasure . The keys are nicely separated and I've had no difficulties . More later if I discover anything new to report .
    • 136 4  I am VERY happy with this little puppy ! Other than wishing it would boot up a bit faster I have not a single complaint about it . It's a netbook , why does anyone expect the sound to be loud on such a small unit ? Buy an external speaker or go for a laptop . It's just the perfect size and if you carry a large purse it will easily fit into it . I am absolutely stoked about the battery life on this thing ! When they said 11 hours they meant it . Imagine being on a plane or spending the day at the coffee shop and NOT having to take the power cord . Add to it a webcam ( although I have no idea if I'll ever use it as I've never used it on my laptop ) and you're set . I waited a long time to buy one of these and now that I'm back at school I expect this to pay for itself in no time . Just buy it , you won't be disappointed . I have nothing but love for Toshiba . I've owned a few of their laptops and their customer support is just great . This is no different . . . I'm a customer for life .
    • 138 4  I ordered this Toshiba netbook for use in a motorhome . I have attached it to the console using a Ram Mount system . The unit is exactly what I wanted to run a Silverleaf Electronics program called VMSpc . This software monitors my engine and transmission's outputs and displays them on the netbook for constant monitoring and troubleshooting . I have also used the netbook to read email and do some limited internet browsing . For true internet use , the screen size would be too small for me . The CPU speed is fine for my application , but I am thinking of adding another gig of memory . As someone else mentioned , the outer case is a magnet for fingerprints , but I already knew that going in , so no big deal there . I am very happy with the netbook for my application .
    • 145 4  I looked for months before buying . The Tosh 305 met my requirements - except it does not have 2 gig ram and windows 7 premium . As it turns out 1 gig is OK , and 7 starter is OK too . Connection to wifi is so much better than with XP . Perfect for what I bought it for - I'm now using it and carrying it around all the time . I have used it mostly on travels overseas : watching video , downloading and uploading and editing photos , listening to music , email , surfing . Battery life is great , have not run out yet . I use a wireless mouse ( not keen on touchpads ) . Con : The keyboard is OK - I miss letters occasionally when typing but I'm getting better with it . I may upgrade the ram and operating system but it is not necessary for most of my use .
    • 147 4  For me it is a good device , because a need a very portable computer , and it is very good for this . It is not so fast , but it is very good to internet and e-mail and to use microsoft office programs . I bought a external DVD ( Sansung ) and it is OK , but I need to download a program to watch DVDs . Overall it is a very nice netbook .
    • 152 4  I absolutely love the Toshiba netbook . After reading many reviews on amazon & other places I decided to get it despite some of the pitfalls that have been stated . Someone said the keys for the nb305 don't register well and you may have trouble typing - While this is true . . . I have had this laptop for a mere day and i am already used to it and haven't had any trouble getting the keys to register . It is definitely something you get used to , not a major problem that continues to spike your time with the lappy . I was also pressing wrong keys when I first began using it , and that has also vanished before 12 hours of usage . I have always had a soft spot for toshiba laptops & they did a magnificent job . There is some reported lag with video streams but as other users have said : that is eliminated through upgrading to 2gb ram . Straightforward process that I plan on doing . The lag is more if you go full-screen , I haven't had much issue with watching videos on their page . The audio is also pleasing . At first it seemed very quiet but within a day ( I know , this is odd ) , the audio has been loud enough for me to want to turn it down . Yay ! Overall , if you're looking for a very mobile laptop & want to turn it into the main laptop of use , I would recommend this one . I already know I will be selling my desktop . No need for it with a sporty netbook such as this . : ) Love it !
    • 158 4  I purchased this computer for my wife to use during an upcoming trip to the UK . It would be a great improvement if the keys were white with black print . It is very difficult to see the special function key markings . The on / off key is lit with a far too bright white led that makes reading the keyboard even more difficult in low light situations . Oddly enough , the packaging of the computer has a picture depicting the notebook with a white keyboard . We are otherwise very pleased with the notebook .
    • 159 4  I have had this netbook for 2 weeks and after moderate use the only complaint is the keyboard . I find that at least 1 or 2 keys tend to stick down after being pressed , and they click back up after a second . It's very unusual and I was not able to find a solution on the Toshiba technical support website . Otherwise , the display is good , the size is great , and the battery life is as described . It's a great way to browse the web and check email on the road or at play . - Paul ( [ . . . ] )
    • 163 4  I carefully researched netbook computers and decided on this Toshiba NB305 - N410 over the Asus models . I ordered it from Amazon , along with the 2GB upgrade , and excitedly greeted the UPS truck as the package arrived this afternoon . Now , just a short time later , I am packing up my new Toshiba netbook and sending it back to Amazon . Why ? After carefully following the start-up guide and turning on the unit , the following message kept popping up over and over again on the screen - SYSTEM WARNING - a problem with the cooling system has been detected . Please turn off the computer immediately and return it for service . Fat chance , Toshiba - I'm not returning it for service . I'm returning it FOREVER . If you can't make a product that works brand new out of the box , then who needs it . And now that I've googled this problem , I see that I'm not the first to encounter it . And probably won't be the last . Not a good buying experience .
    • 164 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) After reading review after review , I decided to wait for the NB - 305 and finally ordered it with next day shipping . Its main purpose was to take notes in class ( I'm a college student ) . However , I eventually returned it and bought an ASUS EEE PC 1005PE-PU17 - BK instead . Here's my review of this netbook . Pros : - Style . There is no better looking netbook . I got the java brown one and it really stands out . People commented on how awesome it looked and I was proud to show it off . The hood has raised lines and does not show fingerprints . The silver interior is a matte plastic that also does not show fingerprints . - Touchpad is HUGE . Feels great , works great , nice big buttons for left and right . Best I've ever used . - Screen . Bright and clear . The screen is brighter than the Asus EEE PC 1005PE-PU17 - BK - Performance . Plays youtube videos without any issues and does not get hot . Cons : - Keyboard . This is what caused me to return the netbook . The keyboard has chiclet style keys ( which I liked ) , HOWEVER , the keys were too low , unresponsive , and oddly shaped . The ~ button was by the ctrl button , the tab button was a thin sliver and I found myself making a TON of typos . For touch typists , I think this keyboard is a nightmare . The Asus EEE PC 1005PE-PU17 - BK's keyboard is superior BY FAR . Because of the keyboard issue , I could not keep this netbook since its main purpose was to TYPE notes . - Battery life . It advertises 11 hours but even on its lowest settings , I could barely squeeze out 6 hours . I was very disappointed . Because of the poor keyboard , I returned this and purchased an ASUS EEE PC 1005PE-PU17 - BK which has more battery life and is $40 cheaper .

    • 172 4  I am known to look too long for just the right choice , this netbook was no different . I like it a lot , I needed ( wanted ) XP the touch pad is huge , keyboard feels great , the left / right mouse buttons are great because they hang off the edge so you don't have to raise your tumb to push them . Not too much bloatware , uninstalled most of the junk and put Kaspersky on . the only bad stuff ; Fingerprint magnet the book suggest that you can't just leave on charge since it can overcharge ? ( I'm not sure if that's right but the indicator goes to green but does not indicate if it goes to a maintenence mode ) I like leaving the house and not caring when the battery is full I have to think more about whether that will be a deal breaker . Put in the extra memory just to be sure , Streams netflix / hulu / daily show / etc just fine the only stutter I get at all is with a slow coffee shop wi fi it streams fine . . . . not sure I even needed the 2 meg memory for that . the touch pad is one of those ones that will shine up over time , not a fan of that but no big deal . Just buy it , it's a good netbook , not sure why the price jumped recently I got mine just over the 3x100 mark
    • 178 4  Looked around and love this Toshiba , the key board is excellent . Does get hot at times , but don't keep it on your lap .
    • 192 4  * UPDATE * : For anyone else having problems with Windows 7 and the Realtek Ethernet Adapter , find the appropriate drivers on Toshiba's website , and plug in an active ethernet connection before you install . When installation finishes , check out this site and follow the second and third set of steps : [ . . . ] This helped me out and I do not have to rely on the sometimes slow and unavailable WiFi connection at the College I go to . This issue must be related to the drivers , hopefully they will update them . This is a very cute and nicely designed laptop . Appearance and features are all great . I wish it just worked completely ! As I am typing this , it is really hard to type because of the silver keys , they are shiny and spaced strange . You also have to press down on them really HARD and it gets annoying and uncomfortable after typing for a long period of time when you keep missing letters . The whole purpose of this netbook was to have something to take to school to type papers but the keyboard is unacceptible ! I might as well lug around my larger laptop than this thing ! I'm not sure if this applies for other models , but the one I have does not have drivers or is even displaying the Realtek Ethernet port . I found the Windows 7 drivers on Toshiba's support site and installed them . I believe this probably has something to do with Windows 7 STARTER ( With emphasis on Starter Edition ) , which in itself is a terrible operating system . I don't have Windows 7 , but luring potential buyers with the newest version of Windows was a sly thing . I was surprised to learn that it had the lamest version of Windows , and I know this doesn't have to do with functionality but you can't even customize your background or color of windows , or especially run programs in other compatibility modes , among other things . So I'm kind of ashamed of showing off this laptop if my wallpaper makes me look like Some Microsoft Windows lackey . I don't hate windows , I actually tried Windows 7 Home Premium , and that was nice ! When I have the chance I will downgrade to Windows XP , Windows 7 is just too slow for this netbook . Of course I could always buy more ram but what's the point of spending money on something that doesn't even work all the way . If a product has an ethernet port , then by all means the port should work , and it doesn't . That is pretty sad that you have to search the internet for drivers for something that should have come installed . When I was trying to help my dad buy a small laptop or netbook for work I saw the specs for this computer at the store and compared to other netbooks it seemed the best . I am glad my dad did not end up buying this model , because someone who isn't familiar with computers would be left in the dark on how to fix the ethernet issue . Who knows what else is wrong with this computer , only further use will tell . I have nothing but HP computers , and while they also have their flaws , I feel more comfortable looking for driver updates and support on their site . The site layout makes more sense to me . Another thing I hate is all the company's pre-installed software that comes on computers these days . I know some of them are for support but they get bothersome on startup , and just make the computer run slow . All the extra Toshiba junk I felt that I didn't need , I just uninstalled it . If you are looking for a better netbook , I must recommend the Acer One series . I have friends who have them and they have not had issues with them . You could try your luck with HPs line of netbooks , they seem okay but I don't have one yet . I love HP . Oh man the keyboard on this bothers me so much . . .
    • 194 4  We researched this laptop a lot before we purchased it . All reviews of the product were stellar , and ofcourse Toshiba is known for is good quality and value for money . However , this one did not live up to our expectations and maybe underlined the fact that netbooks do not meet our requirement . The goods : * Great battery life ! * Extremely light * Looks good * Among the best keyboards available for netbooks - nearly full-size and very usable * Responsive touchpad The bads : * The power cord : A touch was all that was necessary to make it come undone . Not sure if the defect was particular to the netbook that we received . * Graphic performance : Sub-par , I guess this is the case with most netbooks . It was unable to even handle 480p high quality video from YouTube / Netflix / Hulu . The video stuttered ( jittery ) at lot to the point of being unusable . I figured that Windows 7 was the cause of the performance issue and switched to natively installed Jollycloud , but that didn't help either . Not sure if it was because of the PineTrail processor or despite it . * Lack of installation CDs : C'mon Toshiba , pack then with the netbook . These do not come with DVD writers , and I do not have DVD writers lying around to create a repair DVD set .
    • 196 4  The NB305 - N310 is cute , lightweight , and functional . Because it's black , it goes with just about any outfit . Don't make the mistake of going with one of the colored versions and thereby limiting yourself to only particular clothes . Can you imagine the sorry girl who buys the white one without thinking and then can use it only between Memorial Day and Labor Day ? The Toshiba engineers made the case shiny enough that you can look at it when you put your lipstick on . It has traveled extensively with me , including overseas , and never bogged me down .
    • 198 4  Small , portable , user friendly , nice finish and great looks . the keyboad takes some getting used to . this cannot replace your laptop if u are doing anything more than email and wordprocessing .
    • 200 4  Everything was going well until the time I tried to install Japanese IME program . I do not know why , but it did not work at all when I downloaded the program from [ . . . ] in the first time . However , it worked perfectly in the sencond time . I do not think this is a big issue since not so many people in the US use Japanese IME .
    • 202 4  This review is for the NB305 - 310 with the Black Onyx finish . I give it two stars because it has a different keyboard than all the other models ( which are famous for their keyboard layout ) . It feels cheap and it doesn't seem right that customers think that the only difference between this and the other models is $50 price reduction , Windows XP , and a black finish . I'm not sure why Toshiba did this , but it is very distressing when you buy a netbook for a highly recommended keyboard layout and it turns out to be completely different . The keys are way too soft and noisy . The NB305 - 310 also looks ridiculousy cheap even though it is a very durable machine . The glossiness factor is overdone on the outside of the machine . If you end up buying this on Amazon and make the same mistake I did , it is an expensive return .
    • 204 4  Purchased this a month ago for portable web browsing , watching movies / videos , and writing . Pros : Small and cute package Lightweight Long battery life Cons : Gets very hot - seems dangerously so Performance is slow . Feels like trying to run advanced programs on an outdated machine . Microsoft programs seem to take awhile to open up . YouTube videos at 480p are choppy and VEEV extremely so . Not sure if specs are outdated or if this is a fluke but this is rather disappointing I use a MacBook Pro for work and while that has taken me time to get used to , ironically , the low performance on this Toshiba makes me want to get an iPad instead ( with a keyboard for the writing )
    • 206 4  this computer is so full of bloatware and lack of memory that it barely runs internet explorer , so what's the point ? I can't believe all the crap that toshiba puts on this computer , no wonder apple kicks their their butt ! ! Perhaps adding another gig of memory would help a lot , but why not just buy a netbook with at least 3 gigs , which is what i did . Huge difference in performance for $80 more bucks , plus i got bigger screen , dvd player , works great with multiple programs running .
    • 213 4  I received my Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch less than a month ago . I Had an NB205 before running on the Windows XP . The NB305 runs on Windows 7 starter . I am disappointed with my purchase . the computer is very slow , In fact so slow that the courser is always behind a step making it so difficult to type anything fast . I have to take time in between so the computer can catch up with me ( I am so slow in typing , in fact I type with two fingers only ) . The problem is that Toshiba did apparently not think about the Windows 7 demanding operating system before marketing this product to the public . Sounds like another Japanese product gone Toyota way . The worse is that the customer service leaves you with no solution , they know it ! I asked if I could convert to Windows XP ! The answer was that I am on my own w / o any customer support as soon as I load Windows XP . It is really sad to pay more for the newest product and yet you realize what they sold to you has less performance than their older product . I am totally disappointed and most likely return my Toshiba perhaps for an ACER !

  • Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I bought this laptop for traveling , I plan to travel for awhile , so needed a lightweight computer mainly to look up hotels and transportation , keep in touch with family members using email and chat services , browsing the web , listen to music , and storing pictures .

    • 074 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I am well pleased with this computer . I purchased it because of the battery life to use as a book reader . Even with the brightness on high all the time , the battery last all day . You can set the system on hibernate and you never have to cut it off , makeing it much faster to load up . Although I've been using computers since 1994 , I've never owned a laptop before . This is a nice introduction .

Rapidly locates wireless networks for internet use . Needs an external DVD drive but small size makes it more conveniently portable than standard size laps . . .

The small Toshiba is perfect size to take traveling . We use it to check email , make reservations and look at the web . We have two Toshiba 15.5 laptops and had no problems with either , this small one has been everything we expected - - perfect for us .
    • 119 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Bought it to surf in bed .

    • 128 4  Ilove my new netbook toshiba miniNB305 , very handy. All i wanted is to have a small computer when i go out of town to surf internet , pay my bills on line and keep up with my friends in facebook.I can put this mini NB305 in my purse if i want to . The price is right. The idea of the netbook came from my patient ( i am a nurse ) he told me that he traveled all over and got tired bringing his big lap top , so he bought a net book . I did my own research and Toshiba Mini 305 is in top 5 of the consumer report . I can recommend this to anybody , just love it .
    • 155 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook ( Personal Computers ) I received the Toshiba NB305 yesterday , and I have nothing but good things to say about it .
    • 199 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) Everything was going well until the time I tried to install Japanese IME program . I do not know why , but it did not work at all when I downloaded the program from [ . . . ] in the first time . However , it worked perfectly in the sencond time . I do not think this is a big issue since not so many people in the US use Japanese IME .
    • 203 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) Purchased this a month ago for portable web browsing , watching movies / videos , and writing .
    • 205 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook ( Personal Computers ) this computer is so full of bloatware and lack of memory that it barely runs internet explorer , so what's the point ? I can't believe all the crap that toshiba puts on this computer , no wonder apple kicks their their butt ! ! Perhaps adding another gig of memory would help a lot , but why not just buy a netbook with at least 3 gigs , which is what i did . Huge difference in performance for $80 more bucks , plus i got bigger screen , dvd player , works great with multiple programs running .

  • Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I love this netbook .

    • 038 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) This computer has been just what the doctor ordered but the 1GB of memory makes it a relatively slow computer so I ordered the 2GB memory upgrade that Amazon recommended to order with the computer so I ordered it .
    • 044 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook ( Personal Computers ) I purchased this computer about 2 mos ago and use it every day for an average of 2 or more hrs a day . The only modification that I made was to install an extra gigabyte of RAM so it could handle several programs at once without freezing up . I am very happy with the product . The keyboard is very user friendly and the screen is bright with good color and contrast . With normal screen brightness setting I get about 7 hours of use time per battery charge . If I use the energy saver mode with less screen brightness I can get about 8 or 9 hrs of use per battery charge . Physically , I like the way that the extra battery option is integrated into and underneath the base of the computer giving the computer about a 15 degree incline . The integrated battery incline gives me good hand wrist position and also allows an air space underneath the computer to dissipate heat . On the issue of heat generation , I find that this computer really does not generate excessive amounts of heat . As far as functioning , I can run 3 to 4 windows at a time . If one of the windows happens to be an application like Lightroom v . 2.6 ( a photogallery and digital photo processing program by Adobe ) it will run reasonably fast . However , if a program like Lightroom is running I find that the computer will freeze if I also try to keep several other windows open . In summary , Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx I feel this is a quality product , well worth the price . The small footprint , and light weight make this a perfect computer to carry around with me through out the day when I am working as a physician in a busy ER . I highly recommend this Toshiba model 305 netbook running the Windows XP platform with 2 gigabytes of RAM .

    • 046 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I purchased my netbook after weeks of research . All of the major computer peridocals rate this netbook as one of the best . I had an advantage of trying out many of other netbooks available from my co-workers - - HP , Acer , Aspire , Dell , ect . Although each of these are good machines , the battery life cannot compare on any of them to the Toshiba . I am getting between 9 to 10.5 hours with heavy use . Traveling internationally on 12 - 14 hour non stop flights makes this critical to me . I use Excel and Visio extensively . Both load faster on this machine than on my other laptop . I have not tried AutoCad yet on this machine , but expect comparable results . I would recommend buying the additional memory and DVD reader / writer at the same time you purchase this machine . Big savings as a packeagge of nearly $100 . Hope this is helpful to anyone looking to purchase a quality device . By the way this is my 9th Toshiba computer . It would be hard for me to switch after the success I have had with them .
    • 050 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) Very happy with purchase .
    • 058 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I've responded to a few reviews , but haven't got around to reviewing the netbook myself , so I'll throw my two cents worth in since I've now had it in my possession for about 12 hours .
    • 066 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I just received my Toshiba Notebook , its greet deal ( $290 from Amazon ) in its kind . The one thing that doesn't match the description post it by manufacturer is the battery life , mine works for almost 7 hours while they said its 11 hour battery . Easy to set up , easy to use . I recommended this product for frequent travelers and other users whom like small and light notebooks

    • 137 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I ordered this Toshiba netbook for use in a motorhome .
    • 171 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I am known to look too long for just the right choice , this netbook was no different .
    • 181 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I bought this netbook for travel purposes , so I could keep up with email , and surf the web for information when I was traveling . For instance , purchasing tickets online , or accessing maps , can be easily and speedily done once you have a decent WiFi connection . Many hotels offer the WiFi . I took this netbook to Europe on a two-week vacation , and it served my purposes pretty well . It does NOT do more than a mediocre job of hosting video calls in Skype . It just doesn't have the computational muscle for that . I made video calls , but the video half was often jerky , and sometimes calls were dropped . But for accessing information , it did just fine . And it's nice and compact , too .
    • 183 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I gave it a 3 Star and not a 1 Star , because the Netbook does look nice , and the keyboard is very user friendly . Here are the negatives , and they are big negatives . The Netbook was painfully slow , and locks up all the time . Even when you end task , the end task feature won't work , and you have to shut off the computer . I thought , no problem , I'll just double the RAM like so many have done . I did that to 2 GIG instead of 1 GIG , and it's just as bad as it was . Did I just get a lemon ? Am I allowed to return it for a new one , being that I switched out the RAM ? I'm VERY bummed that this is my new Netbook , and it takes forever to do anything with it . It's horrible !
    • 195 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) The NB305 - N310 is cute , lightweight , and functional .
    • 201 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) This review is for the NB305 - 310 with the Black Onyx finish .
    • 209 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) This netbook seemed like a perfect buy when i first got it but after a week or two everything just started to freeze . The internet was too slow and kept on freezing every time i opened inernet explorer . It does have a good battery life but for that battery life , performance is definately missing .
    • 211 4  Dear Friends , I am a user of 3 months old Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx . after three months . the laptop started acting funny . The hinges of the screen and the base have a problem and the tension looses it and fall the lid . Upon contacting the customer care of Toshiba . they said , it is a known issue and they will replace it . The replacement cost is $15 for shipment and the repair charges of another $60 . The next issue of this net book is touchpad , the touch pad of this netbook is a kind of metal sticker stuck on the touch pad and it can come out easily and again you press it in four corner of the touchpad to use properly , and it cursor act like a 100% drunken mouse . The screen has a poor quality wave TFT , which gives your eyes a strain and pain , end of the day , you feel like dieing with headache . The sound card drivers are funny and gives you howling sounds . You never cannot get of this unless you mute . My conclusion is , I never recommend Toshiba to any one , It is just a brand name and very bad products in the market . At last I end up buying one acer and Hp Mini , which I am happy with it . Regards Jerry
    • 214 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) This is at best a fair net book . The screen maximum pixels is 1024x600 . Which can not use the latest Yahoo email settings . The photograph images are poor quality . I am constantly nagged by the request to buy Toshiba Online Backup . I have my own backup and do not need the commercial that I can not turn off . I should have bought the Apple iPad . I am going to replace this with the Apple iPad .

    • 218 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) I bought this model based on the fact that it came preloaded with the Windows Office suite . However , it is just a trial version , which I only realized after spending an hour on the phone with both Amazon and Toshiba . It is very misleading , because there is a product key that comes with the machine ; however , the site does not recognize it once you put it in .

  • Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook - Black Onyx ( Personal Computers ) Very good battery last for at least 8 Hours . Large hard drive . Poor video cam resolution . Weak sound . Monitor resolution not so good when you read a text or look at a foto . The card reader does not work for Memory stick . Nice looking little laptop . Easy to carry around . Overall I'll recommend it to a friend .

  • Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I just got this computer yesterday so it's a little early to really tell , but let me say a few things .

Strong battery . 1Gb of RAM with Windows 7 starter means some things don't load as fast , and having multiple programs running slows it up a bit . This is my first netbook , very happy .
    • 117 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I like everything about this computer except for the speakers , they are absolutly useless . If you buy this computer , you might as well get a headset right away-you , ll need them . Best feature is the battery life .
    • 127 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Ilove my new netbook toshiba miniNB305 , very handy.
    • 129 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) The Mini NB305 does exactly what I what I want and need it to do .
    • 131 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) OK , so it is not a desktop replacement laptop , but I didn't buy it for that .

It is not so fast , but it is very good to internet and e-mail and to use microsoft office programs . I bought a external DVD ( Sansung ) and it is OK , but I need to download a program to watch DVDs . Overall it is a very nice netbook .
    • 148 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) So far so good .

    • 169 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) This is my first netbook and the reviews were so great I thought it would be a slam dunk .
    • 185 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Good mini netbook but much heavier than Samsung Mini Netbook ( 2.8 lb ) although the item description says it is only 2.6 lb .

  • Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I purchased this netbook for easy and lightweight access to the internet while traveling and as an extra computer that is easier to move around the house ( avoiding having to disconnect all devices ) . No need for lots of memory or fast processor . Definite need for good WiFi , camera for Skype , reliability , long battery life . This product met these needs fantastically . No plans or need to upgrade memory or Win 7 Starter . Battery life may not be the 11 hrs described but it's very long - unbelievable compared to standard notebooks , possibly achievable if I played with settings . Limited screen resolution is expected drawback . Many Web pages such as Gmail don't fit on single page . Travel mini-mouse little easier to use than touchpad . Recommend highly if you have same needs as me .

    • 139 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) My new white Toshiba netbook is awesome . It is exceptionally easy to acclimate to the keyboard , the picture is clear , and it is very responsive to the internet and Skype . The speaker is quite weak ( but I am hearing impaired ) so a cute tiny pair of earphones fixed that . I find battery life to be close to the 11 hours Toshiba touts it to have and recharging is quick , quick , quick . It is so light I'm taking it with me on my trip to Great Britain for journaling and to stay in touch with grandkids .

  • Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I've been using this for about a month now , and I'm definitely satisfied with my purchase .

  • Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) Let me start by saying that I read nearly every review on Amazon for this product before buying it .
    • 008 4  I had been looking at the various netbooks for a while and really liked Toshiba's NB205 but just couldn't get around the negative comments on battery placement and speaker quality . The NB305 was specifically designed to address these concerns - different battery placement and two speakers instead of just the one on the 205 . As for things this shares with the 205 : The chiklet keyboard just rocks - space between the keys goes a long way towards cutting down on the mistypes that you get on the keyboards where the keys are merging one into the next . It may not matter to many people but if you have a long haired cat or dog that sheds and likes to spend time in your lap the fact that this is a much easier keyboard to keep pet hair out of is a huge plus as well . Having two separate mouse buttons instead of one rocker bar is handy for those of us who like to actually use the right click . Keyboard layout as a whole is very touch type friendly so those who actually learned how to type on a real keyboard or - gasp - typewriter can actually use this keyboard . Portability is also another huge plus , when it's closed this little guy doesn't have much more of a footprint than a decent sized hard cover book and while I realize that this just means it's a netbook as somebody who still remembers his high school computer lab having IBM PS - 2 ' s it's still amazing . In an effort to make this a true review I'll also hit a few of the things that are shortcomings for the NB305 . Is this going to let you watch high def movies - no . Is this going to let you play World of Warcraft or other graphic intensive games - no . Are you going to be able to multi-task 5 different RAM intensive applications - be serious you only have 1G of RAM or 2G if you upgrade . The reason I'm giving such a great rating to this netbook is that having said all of the things that the NB305 - and for that matter netbooks in general - can't do the simple fact is that I don't want to do and wouldn't expect to do those things on a 10.1 in screen to begin with . If you want to play games there are laptops targeted for that market , if you want to watch HD video get a laptop with a blue-ray not something that doesn't even have an optical media drive . You can get a laptop that plays games - full discloser I have one , handles HD video and / or serves as near desk top replacements and you can get them for not a lot more than you will spend to get the NB305 , what you will not get is the portability . Personally I want something to check my email , check headlines on the web , watch the occasional You-Tube , do word processing , handle I-Tunes and allow me to use a Citrix client to access the work related apps on a server when I'm away from the office and still fit in my briefcase . This little guy fits the bill and looks good doing it - thanks Toshiba .

    • 011 4  Okay , I like others have thoroughly researched and taken my time to buy a netbook . I was first intrigued with the Toshiba Nb205 , but had issues with the battery sticking out , so I waited until a newer version was released to see if the issue would be resolved , and it was . The Toshiba NB305 is a more slender and attractive upgrade from its predecessor and many netbooks on the market . I was a Mac guy for years , before they became mainstream and when they were focused on quality and customers . I was tired of spending thousands of dollars for a macbook that would be practically obsolete and depreciate rapidly within a year , thus , I began to look into other options . Both Nokia's mini and Toshiba's mini , fit the style and boldness that I ounce admired in Macs , though I'm sure they took their blueprint from Mac and ran with it . The Toshiba NB305 along with Windows 7 , is a better choice for me personally , than buying a new Mac laptop . It costs a fraction of the cost of a Mac laptop and it looks just as good as a Mac . I only use it for my small business , versus using it for creative endeavors that I think a Mac is far superior for . I initially bought 2gb of ram to upgrade the netbook , but didn't really need it for what I am doing now . The netbook does most task with ease , with just 1gb of RAM . There isn't a problem playing videos on Youtube or streaming video . All of my programs load really fast and I have no complaints , as far as performance , with just 1gb RAM . I'm not saying that it is without flaws with only 1gb of ram , but it isn't a big deal . If you are on a budget , save the additional $50 on upgrading the Ram until you test it out for yourself with just the 1gb of RAM , it might not be that big of a deal . The battery life is as stated . The screen is bright , colorful and vibrant . The speaker's sound isn't as low as some make it out to be , I can watch and listen to a video online at a comfortable level . I adjusted the volume to its peak and have no problem hearing . The keyboard is the only thing that I have to get use to . On one hand , the keyboard is just like typing on a full size laptop , as a matter of fact , my whole experience on the NB305 is comparable to working on a full size laptop ; sure the screen is smaller , but the display's brightness , vividness and text ratio make it a comfortable experience , so I forget that I am typing and using a smaller machine . But , although the keyboard is full size and has a nice touch , it is set up , somewhat awkward , in my opinion . I can't put my finger on what's off , but it occasionally throws off my typing , as some other reviewers have mentioned . But , I think it is something that I can get use to . I didn't have a problem with an over sensitive touchpad , as some others have mentioned , I actually had the contrary experience , in which my touchpad wouldn't respond well to gestures and movements . But , if you have a problem either way , you can make ALOT of adjustments to your touchpad . I think many that have mentioned these problems , have overlooked that there is a more detailed adjustment program beyond the standard Control Panel mouse standard settings . There are settings within the touchpad software , Synaptics , which settings are within the Control Panel mouse settings , that give you very precise settings for your touchpad to get it working the way you want . Toshiba also has their own software loaded , with some useful applications . They also have an option to create a recovery disk , so I'm not sure if this is the missing recovery disks that some reported missing from this netbook ? As far as Windows 7 starter , I was at first reluctant a few months ago to buy any netbook , because of the misinformation about Windows 7 starter . Aside from not being able to change the desktop and a few codecs missing for DVD playback , both of which you can search the internet and get around these issues , if you need to , otherwise there isn't any hindrance or major limitation with Windows 7 starter . Most of the other added features in the full version are for faster processors and not netbooks . I am able to open many windows and programs simultaneously , without limitations . I think there is more of a psychological block that many have , knowing that Microsoft is trying to be greedy and they feel restricted and cheated . My way of thinking is , I am content with what I have and will not give in to their psychological agenda and the need to feel that I have to upgrade to fit in . Trust me , the program is fine as it is , for basic and intermediate duties . Overall , I am pleased with my new Toshiba NB305 and believe that it is a netbook that can stand the test of time , with its upgradeability , style and solid build .
    • 057 4  a brief review . its stats are comparable to other netbooks out there . the raving about the keyboard is true from this former dell mini 9 and acer one user . it's fantastic . don't waste part of your short life getting used to a poorly designed keyboard . speed is fine without the 2gb ram upgrade . brown is way more beautiful in person than the pictures suggest . the hinges feel sturdy . there is no plastic creak in this thing . without having used the other n450 netbooks out there , i can at least say that this one is a pleasure to use . true portability without the nagging thought in your head that you'll have to relocate next to an outlet soon , lest your battery dies . typing is enjoyable which probably bespeaks more of my sad and boring life than of the engineering behind this keyboard . the 305 was built upon an award winning design and because of it , i'm having a hard time finding flaws in it . it's a pleasant computing experience that reminds you of how nice it is to go outdoors : )
    • 070 4  Love it . Very compact , light , portable - - and great battery life . Have used at a coffee shop for 2 hours , with very large percentage of battery life remaining . Can't say if it would or wouldn't last 11 or 10 hours , but I know at 3 or 4 or 5 you'd have no worries , and I'd rarely stretch it that far . As with any netbook , you don't get the most powerful cpu , but that's the tradeoff for the light weight and low power-consumption . I upgraded to the max 2Gig memory , upgraded from Win7 Starter to full Win7 and bought an external DVD drive , so ended up pushing $600 altogether , but it's probably the best of breed at the moment with the great looks , the exceptional battery life and flawless functioning . Very happy with it .
    • 077 4  You can't go wrong with this Toshiba . Setup is quick and painless . Rapidly locates wireless networks for internet use . Needs an external DVD drive but small size makes it more conveniently portable than standard size laps . . .
    • 087 4  Fantastic screen , very good keyboard - though not the same as a regular laptop . Strong battery . 1Gb of RAM with Windows 7 starter means some things don't load as fast , and having multiple programs running slows it up a bit . This is my first netbook , very happy .
    • 143 4  I've had this netbook for about a month now . It looks great - other people with other netbook brands have expressed jealousy . The hinge feels sturdy . The touchpad and buttons are large and easy to use . The keyboard is nicely sized and easy to get used to . As another reviewer points out , it comes with all kinds of crap on it . I blew the main partition away and did a clean , stripped-down install of Windows 7 Pro , and it runs very smoothly . The only conceivable issue is that it's a little slow playing youtube videos , but I expected that ( and I'm supposed to be doing work on this thing anyway ) . Videos played with VLC ( a free , no-frills media player ) run fine . I don't know yet whether this netbook will still be running great five years from now , but so far I can highly recommend it .
    • 151 4  This is a great little computer . . . . it's fast , light , and works for 11 hours without a battery recharge ! I did end up buying a 2 gig RAM card and changing out the 1 gig that it had , but mostly because I use it for movies streamed in from Netflix and wanted it to be faster . I got it in white and it's a great looking computer and since the finish is matte , no fingerprints ever show up on it .
    • 184 4  I gave it a 3 Star and not a 1 Star , because the Netbook does look nice , and the keyboard is very user friendly .

  • Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) . . . yet here I am writing a positive review about a Windows machine .
    • 022 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I too have carefully researched my decision to add a netbook as a in-between addition to my iPhone and Macbook Pro .

    • 099 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I just bought the NB305 - N410BL when I power it . after it goes to the TOSHIBA screen it goes black and a Multi-Colored line shows up and sits there for about 20seconds . ( its horizontal , and shows about half an inch from the top of the screen ) . I contacted Amazon and returned the the product and got a replacement but after I received the second one , the problem still exists . I am not sure if whoever has it has the same problem . Have you guys pay attention when the computer is booting . Please click on this link to see what I mean [ . . . ] . This person has the same problem as I have so I quote her comment on this product to warn all buyers .
    • 109 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) This is a great netbook for someone who doesn't want the weight and bulk of a laptop . I did upgrade my memory to 2gb and it was very easy to do . Also have purchased the Toshiba Portable Multi Drive so I can now burn CD's and load programs into my netbook . All this fits nicely into the Targus Sport bag .

    • 135 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I am VERY happy with this little puppy !
    • 141 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I have a desk top and lap top , but I love my netbook it is light weight and just the right size for the times a have to stay in bed . It lets me keep up on my mail and keep up on facebook wtih family , friends and grandchildren . The hardest thing was picking a color outside of that it is a great buy .

My wife loves it . Rather mean not to have a full version of Windows 7 but the slightly boring starter version works for most things . Orgasmic in white Ladies .
    • 175 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I use this netbook to connect to hotspots . It's very light and works well . The minor flaw is that the icon on the tool bar which indicated if was connected has disappeared and I am obliged to go the control panel to connect . It's a minor inconvenience , but on the whole I am very satisfied with this product .
    • 193 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) We researched this laptop a lot before we purchased it .

  • Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I have been in the market for a netbook for over a year now . I have spent many a hour pouring over reviews online , watching youtube unboxings and reviews , and actually doing a lot of hands on in retail stores with all of the options out there . I am thrilled to say that after only 24 hours with the Toshiba NB305 - N410WH , I know that I waited for just the right one . The reviews for its ' predecessor ( the NB205 ) had put that netbook on the top of most professional reviewers list . And , indeed in my own hands on tests , it was right at the top as well . My main concern was the battery that stuck out of the back on that model . I had come close to overlooking this drawback , as I was so pleased with the rest of the model . What kept me from it was a concern I had read from some reviews indicating that sometimes streaming video would skip or get stuck ( a universal concern on most netbooks ) either due to processor or graphics . Here is why I LOVE this little fella : * The battery issue has been totally adressed , and in fact , upgraded . They have redesigned it and no more ugly bulge of battery sticking out of the back . Plus , they now say it has an 11 hour battery . My test of this gave me around 9.5 hours doing very basic surfing and setup . Not quite 11 hours , but am still elated with 9.5 hours . I can now really feel comfortable about leaving the power cable at home for the day . ( however , the power cable is actaully fairly small ) ( Update 1 / 21 / 10 - - In further testing of the battery life , I seem to now be averaging more like 7 hours under heavy usage , meaning video watching and constant use . I am still more than happy with that . Light usage will give you more like the 9.5 hours I mentioned . ) * I'm extremely happy with the performance . Everyone needs to keep in mind that netbooks have never been designed for processor intensive tasks , but this little guy rocks ! The new Pinetrail Atom N450 platform seems to be a great fit for this netbook . The graphics engine is updated , as well . I have had absolutely no delays in any streaming video on YouTube or Netflix . ( I did notice just a bit of stuttering in Hulu only when watching something full screen but this isn't an issue for me . ) Surfing is snappy and responsive , just the way that I like it . For anyone that may have been on the fence about getting a netbook because they were concerned it might not perform , hop right off that fence and get the NB305 . Seriously , I have a Macbook Pro and Dell laptop and this one has instantly become my go to for surfing on the couch or from bed . And , I know this will be the one I now take anywhere out of the house . * The overall look and feel of the NB305 is truly best in class . My big gripe with a ton of netbooks out there is their glossy covers-especially the black , but even other color glossy covers are fingerprint magnets . They just always look smudged and feel cheap to me . I got the textured white model and just love it . Even though I am sure it is all plastic , too , it just looks more expensive . The cover totally repels fingerprints and just feels good . The keyboard and trackpad have received universal love in the previous model and I absolutely agree . The keyboard is extremely easy to type on . No issues at all for me there . The trackpad is truly a selling feature as it is multi-touch . I have this on my Macbook Pro and LOVE it on this netbook . I love being able to do the 2 finger scroll up and side to side . It really makes surfing the web a joy . ( I now curse my Dell for not having this . ) This model actually reduced it's weight to 2.6 lbs making it super easy to take with you . The bottom does heat up a bit but I never felt uncomfortable having it directly on my lap . ( Update 2 / 20 / 10 : Ok , there have been times when it has been uncomfortable on my lap . Especially if you are blocking the vents , which is easy to do when on your lap . I now just set it on the protective sleeve I bought for it and we're good to go . ) This new model has sleeker look than previous models , a little more streamlined in the front . Overall , form factor gets a big A + . So , there are a couple areas for improvement , however , I don't think they are deal breakers given the other areas where the NB - 305 excels : 1 ) The speakers are not great . Actually , they're pretty bad compared to my Mac and Dell . This is definitely an area to improve on , but have found this to be true of all the netbooks I have been able to hear . I'm not saying that you can't hear what you are watching , but I will plan on using earbuds for watching video or listening to music . 2 ) I'm a little bugged that these just come with Windows7 Starter and not Windows7 Home Premium . I feel a little punked into having to pay an extra $80 for the upgrade ( which was extremely simple and fast , by the way . I was able to do it right online - - no need for external optical drive ) . Some people will be fine with Windows7 Starter as it does allow you to do basic functions , but I ultimatley had to cave in and upgrade . You aren't able to personalize things in Windows7 Starter , which was a minor but grating flaw . ( On a side note , I am really liking Windows7 Home Premium . This netbook handles it fine . ) 3 ) I'm kinda concerned that this did not come with any restore cd's . Yes , I realize that this doesn't have a cd / dvd drive , but I guess I just like the comfort of having them if needed . I know that I should back up the system on my own , but I guess I just am not sure what happens if the OS crashes or hard drive has to be replaced . I think there must be new ways to restore , nowadays . I guess I will hopefully never cross that bridge . 4 ) ( Update 2 / 20 / 10 : It does get quite warm around the vents . This may or may not be an issue for you . I can deal with it . ) Overall , I think you can see that I am obviously extremely happy with this purchase . • 001 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I have been in the market for a netbook for over a year now . • 004 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I will admit this is my first netbook but I do have two laptops and two other desktops in the house . The keyboard is absolutely great on this machine , it is what attracted me to the Toshiba initially . I have had this machine for about a week now and so far there is nothing that I can really complain about . The battery life is incredible , although I have yet to try to drain it . Today the machine was on , but not in constant use , for over six hours and it still showed 40% battery life . The screen is very good and even though only 10.1 I am forgetting that I'm on a small machine . Very spacious hard drive at 250GB . This prompted me to permanently move my iTunes collection to this machine so that I can update my podcasts and sync regularly while travelling . I purchased the machine primarily as a personal and entertainment machine while travelling for business . I am able to keep it next to my full size work laptop while responding to email or other tasks and easily jump over to it to access Gmail or Facebook ( prohibited on the company issued laptop ) . I have also used it to stream Netflix while in a hotel with little issue , any issues were mainly to poor wifi coverage in the room . Toshiba has done a very nice job of setting up a variety of very useful Function + F key shortcuts . Mute , Lock , Sleep , Power Mode , Hibernate , Brightness , Wifi can all be accessed with a quick keystroke . The sleep mode actually works very well and wakes to a ready to use state in mere seconds . Win7 Starter is really not bad , little functionality has been removed so as to keep the user from bogging down the system with too many option but still I find very usable and you really don't miss the removed functions . You can look a very good comparison matrix by Paul Thurrott at his Winsupersite Website Since this machine is upgradeable to 2GB of RAM I most likely will just to pepp it up a but right now I LOVE THIS MACHINE and recommend it highly to anyone , even if a little on the pricey side ! * * * UPDATE 2 / 7 / 10 * * * I've been using this machine for several weeks now and am completely satisfied so far . I have had no problems what so ever . I intend to upgrade to 2GB of RAM but have not yet and can only believe the performance will get better . On the heaviest days of usage I can usually get 7 - 8 hours on the battery . I have been using this machine to stream Netflix usually without issue with a strong WIFI signal . I have installed Office 2007 and have not had any problems . I have Skype installed but have not used it for voice calls yet . I will be taking this to Mexico . I will update again on the performance then ! Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook

    • 026 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook ( Personal Computers ) UPDATE : This review is for the Thoshiba NB305 - N410 , I don't know why it is filed under the 310 . . . I was looking for the best netbook for traveling . I am leaving for a 3.5 months trekking trip in South America , and wanted a netbook I could use to : - backup my pictures and movies from my digital camera and camcorder - read my emails from time to time - skype with my friends and family - optionally watch a movie during a long bus / plane trip , or listen to some music at night This means a good hard drive ( 160 Go is low , 250 Go is the standard nowadays ) , good battery life ( prefer an Intel N450 cpu to the older N270 , the N450 is really more power efficient ) , a SDHC card reader and the usual skype tools ( mic , webcam , etc . ) . Moreover , as I will be carrying all my stuff in a backpack ( I really recommend the Deuter Aircontact 55 + 10 Backpack - 3350cu in btw ) , I needed a netbook that is light ( around 1kg ) and compact . Finally , being what we can call a geek , I like to type with my 10 fingers and thus wanted a keyboard as big and comfortable as possible . I tried to type on some other netbooks , like the MSI Wind , and found that very frustrating , because some keys are half the size they should be and I always end up hitting them by mistake . The Toshiba NB305 - 410 is the closest I found to this ideal netbook . I has all the newest ( and now standard ) features ( Intel N450 cpu , 250 Go hard drive , wifi N , LED screen ) , a fairly big keyboard ( that feels pretty similar to the keyboard of my Apple Macbook Unibody , a bit smaller of course ) and a 6 - cell battery , which means an incredible 10 + hours battery life . Moreover , the way they made the battery thicker instead of longer is great , because it does not make the netbook longer and thus takes less room . Finally , with 2.6 pounds , it is pretty close to my 1kg target . Some other netbooks are lighter than this one , of course , but this is usually because they only have a 3 - cell battery , which means half the battery life . The main disadvantages IMHO is not the hardware , but the software . It comes with Windows 7 Starter , which is kind of a joke ( not allowing to change the wallpaper ? Come on . . . . ) . It also has quite a lot of small utility softwares installed , that you may want to remove if you are an experienced user . I am hesitating to downgrade it to XP , or even try Ubuntu , but for now I think I'm going to give it a chance . Finally , 1 Go of RAM is the strict minimum , considering Windows 7 . If you have 45 $ to spare , you may want to upgrade to 2 Go : Crucial Technology CT25664AC800 2GB 200 - pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2 - 6400 Memory Module .
    • 055 4  I purchased this netbook for easy and lightweight access to the internet while traveling and as an extra computer that is easier to move around the house ( avoiding having to disconnect all devices ) .
    • 062 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I'm very happy with this notebook . Excellent screen , very comfortable to type . Battery life is excellent . Had to remove few trial programs and it took me 15 minutes to clean it up . I also had download an updated driver for the speakers as under existing driver the sound is very very low . Surprisingly , Toshiba does not have an updated driver listed on their website , so I had to get it from Realtek website . Once I did that , the sound improved significantly and I keep it in 60 - 70% level now . There is a topic on Toshiba board that discusses about this issue and solution in details . Fix does work . ( at least in my case ) . In regards to vibration issue , I also did get the notification that my hard drive was moved to safe location , but other than that , it did not affect the performance of the netbook . I just checked off this notification to not to see in the future . I bought this notebook mostly for internet , Skype and movies . And once i solved the sound issue , everything work really good . No problem with Skype and playing different format movies . ( I did install VLC player that plays everything without any issues ) . This notebook does get hot , but I think this is the issue with most of the notebooks . I also ordered 2GB RAM , but not because it's needed , just to have it ; - ) So , the bottom line , I'm very happy with the purchase and I believe there is not better notebook on the market within this price range considering battery life , keyboard and just the way it looks . To fix the sound issue : Go to realtek website : [ . . . ] . And get Vista , Windows7 Driver ( 32bits ) Driver only ( Executable file ) driver . Download it , install it ( it will reboot your computer ) . Then reboot the netbook again ( it will apply the settings of the new driver ) . Once the audio drivers have been updated , enable Loudness Equalization by Start - - > Control Panel - - > Hardware and Sound - - > Realtek HD Audio Manager - - > Sound Effects tab , then click OK to save the setting change . Also , under the Realtek HD Audio Manager Sound Effects tab or on the Speaker Enhancement tab , change to Powerful - it should also help . But make sure that you get the new driver first and reboot your nettbook one more time after the first reboot .

    • 220 4  Generally a good deal for the price . You can put Skype on it and have a low cost phone at any free wifi , like mcdonalds , or anywhere in the world . Ignore the bad votes for this review , I think they are hackers who work for the phone company .

  • Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I have to say right off the bat that I have this netbook as well as a fully loaded , majorly powered , Dell XPS laptop .
    • 015 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I have to say right off the bat that I have this netbook as well as a fully loaded , majorly powered , Dell XPS laptop . • 031 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) After quite a bit of research on various types of netbooks , I went with the Toshiba NB305 .
    • 042 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook ( Personal Computers ) I'll be brief , since others have provided quite a bit of detail .
    • 056 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) a brief review . its stats are comparable to other netbooks out there . the raving about the keyboard is true from this former dell mini 9 and acer one user . it's fantastic . don't waste part of your short life getting used to a poorly designed keyboard . speed is fine without the 2gb ram upgrade . brown is way more beautiful in person than the pictures suggest . the hinges feel sturdy . there is no plastic creak in this thing . without having used the other n450 netbooks out there , i can at least say that this one is a pleasure to use . true portability without the nagging thought in your head that you'll have to relocate next to an outlet soon , lest your battery dies . typing is enjoyable which probably bespeaks more of my sad and boring life than of the engineering behind this keyboard . the 305 was built upon an award winning design and because of it , i'm having a hard time finding flaws in it . it's a pleasant computing experience that reminds you of how nice it is to go outdoors : )
    • 115 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N310 10.1 - Inch Netbook ( Personal Computers ) Its hard for me to understand the negative reviews . Everything works great . The speakers are average its true , but no worse . You don't buy a notebook for music - its adequate for youtube or other videos and most songs . Headphones work well . I get about 8 hours but thats at normal - with high screen brightness . The display is easily changed . Firefox works well , I use Abiword for word processing and that fits well . If you want a game computer or to watch full size video with syphonic sound you don't need a Netbook . If you want a quick start , great portability , a machine you can use anywhere to do the tasks you do most - this is great . Ordered the 2G upgrade just because I'm a bit of a nerd , didn't really need it . I use 125% sized fonts and don't have to squint to do work . As so many have sid , it really depends on what you're looking for . I wanted XP and find the ability to make changes very useful , would not like a machine with just 7 Starter . No regrets at all .
    • 153 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I highly recommend this netbook .
    • 162 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BL 10.1 - Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I carefully researched netbook computers and decided on this Toshiba NB305 - N410 over the Asus models .

    • 207 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I rate this 2 stars mainly due to battery life can not get more than 7 hrs .20 mins . I bought this one because it said up 11 hours battery life . Does not matter which mode it is in that is the best it will do.Purchased it about 2 mos . ago.For that reason could not recommend buying it.Don't know if I just happened to get a lemon but mine will not even get close to 11 hours .
    • 212 4  This review is from : Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) I received my Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410BN 10.1 - Inch less than a month ago .

  • Toshiba Mini NB305 - N410WH 10.1 - Inch Frost White Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life ( Personal Computers ) The reason I bought this netbook over others was the long-lasting battery . Everything looked great out of the box . I used the computer around the house for the night and put it on charge over night to get it juiced up again for more fun the next day . The battery never charged and hasn't charged , EVER ! I called customer support to get help on a Saturday and was told I needed a new battery and received a Return Merchandise Authorization number and waited for my replacement battery . And waited , and waited . Never received the battery . I called with the case # and RMA and was told that the order was rejected by a case manager but the people on the phone couldn't tell me why . It was Saturday again , when most people have time away from work to wait on hold with customer care . They told me I had to contact a case manager to find out the issue . Well , the case managers have the weekend off , apparently . I was told that the case manager would contact me between Monday and Wednesday ? ! I was welcome to call and chase them down if I chose to , which I did this Monday . Gretchen took my call and sent out a new battery and an incomplete AC adapter kit ( it has 2 pieces to it and I received 2 of the same parts of the adapter ) . I called this morning to tell Gretchen that the new battery didn't charge over night and to see what we could do next . She never called me back and I talked to Mina who assured me that Gretchen would call me tomorrow to send me the other part of the AC adapter that I'm missing . Well , I was telling her about my dissatisfaction which she apparently didn't have time for and hung up on me . I called Mina back to escalate my complaints and was told the case workers don't have a level above them but I could tell another case worker of my unhappiness , which I did . Now I have to wait to have Gretchen call me back with some sort of solution other than replacing the netbook . I have been told that I will probably have to send it in for repair . So , the netbook I bought on 3 / 8 has not worked properly for 2 weeks and I still have no resolution ! ! ! Again , god forbid you have any issues with this machine ! ! !

It am satisfied in that it does everything I expected . Wifi works great , capable of doing the things my desk top does , with portability in mind . Atom processor could be faster . This was a two part order that AMAZON in my view neatlessly screwed up . Maybe Amazon is getting to large and unable to manage the details anymore .
