Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK/7K - Retail

  • 007 4  This drive is a latecomer in the 2TB arena and doesn't have many reviews , but it is a well loved contender . I put several of these in a Drobo Raid Enclosure and they work extremely well , maxing out the claimed read / write speeds of the enclosure . This drive is the only affordable 7200rpm 2TB drive . They also start up quickly ; when you've got four of them in one enclosure , this really matters . Because of this , a lot of people buy these for raids . The green drives are popular , but the WD and Seagates seem to have a lot of trouble running in raid configurations without flashing the firmware . They can have varying RPMs from eachother set at the factory , not good at all . Hitachi's are a bit noisy , my only complaint . But a nice throaty sound at least . Be sure to look up the firmware in your enclosure or desktop and make sure that it fits a drive this modern and large .
    • 013 4  I have this drive . But it was not purchased through Tiger Direct , so this review does not address that vendor . I might have given this drive five stars , but since I have had it installed for less than 24 hours , I cannot rate the long term reliability of the drive . Pro : Retail box with 18 sata cable and mounting screws included . Also booklet with instructions for those who need it . Good size drive for the money I gave for it . Good performance . Con : The drive became rather noisy during the end of the format . I thought it might have been defective . Runs quiet now . Looks like I was nervous with out good cause .
    • 016 4  I use this drive on my Drobo enclosure , together with Seagate and Western Digital models . I found that this Hitachi drive runs hotter and noiser than Seagate and WD models , so I cannot recommend it if you're concerned about temperature or noise level . Go for the WD Green models instead . Pros : cheap , 7200K rpm , faster than green models Cons : noisy , runs hot
    • 047 4  Stuck it in a Lacie external HDD shell ( the old HDD died ) , and it's working great so far .
    • 052 4  I bought three of these drives . Two were installed in an Icy Doc with a Firewire 800 running in Raid 1 ( Mirror for safety . ) I am keeping the third drive for spare , just in case one of them die , hopefully it will be a long time before that happens . I have them hooked up to my iMac and can't be any happier . They are very fast and extremely quiet and cool . With the adjustable fan in the Icy Doc external box set to the lowest speed , I can't even feel the drives warm after running them for a whole straight hour . These are definitely a great buy for the price .
    • 064 4  This HDD is exactly what I needed to replace my old HDD on my Dell C521 . The increased capacity over my 80GB is obviously appreciated . In reference to the how noisy this drive is : I can notice that the drive has a different sound coming from it as compared to my OEM drive , specially when starting up an application with WinXP . The sound it makes reminds me of early drives , back from when I was first flirting with computers , sounding more like a ta-taka-tat , tat than a buzzing sound like the OEM used to make , when reading / writing data . I can't perceive the difference in write / read speeds between this drive and my old drive , but that's not what I bought it for , although it is rated at a higher speed than the OEM . I am very happy with the increased storage capacity and so it is fulfilling its requirements for me .
    • 068 4  First of all thank you Amazon for excellent purchase experience . I choose 5 to 7 days free delivery but product arrived in two days so five stars for delivery and purchase experience . This is my first Hitachi HD I usually purchase Wester Digital and it's not been six month yet so as far as reliability is concerned it is too early too tell . Installation and use of product was easy , that goes with any HD purchase . I am using this drive to expand my storage on custom built Window Home Server . I would recommend purchase from Amazon . Thanks .
    • 100 4  Usual excellent service of Amazon and partner Tiger Direct . Reasonable price for such capacity . I put in a Rosewill enclosure and have been using for one day with eSata . I did format it ( long format NTSC ) . Using with two PCs , one Windows 7 , the other XP Pro . Don't know yet about the long haul , but installation was easy - - always a relief !

  • 018 4  My case might be one of rarity and it probobly is . This drive just didnt work . Its a single case basis though . MGF defect is all . It happens from all MGF's not just hitachi so I would advise people to think about this drive because dollars to storage its a really good deal . Its movements are kinda loud though . Im my case there was just something wrong with the logic board . It had power and it spun made lots of noise but would not be recognized in bios or by windows . You can get a bad part from anyone though so its all just a luck game .
    • 058 4  While looking for an external hard drive to use as backup for my desktop , I ran across this one on sale . The size is good it looks rather spiffy . My only complaint is the speed . I backed up my entire system and it took quite a while for this to process but I had a lot of songs and several videos to go along with a couple thousand digital photos . All in all it works adequately . I mean , I wanted a backup file and it certainly does this so I rate it 4 stars .
    • 096 4  As allways Amazon.com has provided a safe buying format . My products came to me as promised and in good shape . all parts of the buying experienc were easy and safe . The only bad point was the amount of time it took for the free shipping . Overall I was pleased with the purchase .

  • 025 4  I bought 2 of these drives last year from Amazon for $69 . Both were trouble free on installation into a storage server . So far they've been very reliable with no issues . I've purchased and installed maybe a dozen Deskstar drives in my life , and they've always been good to me . That being said , I've also bought plenty of WD and Seagate drives without incident . I feel like it's sometimes a luck of the draw when it comes to commodities like drives or memory . If that's the case , maybe I should go buy a lotto ticket .
    • 056 4  I've had it for a few weeks now and it's doing fine . I was worried that it would be noisy but it is not . One complaint is that I had to reprogram the BIOS to detect the drive . I think some drives can detect how the BIOS is set up .
    • 077 4  I bought 4 for work , after using them for a while for backups in a loud server room I bought 1 for home . It is loud in a quite room however it's super cheap storage . I've since bought 7 drives total , this drive is good . Just very loud in quite rooms . Fast , large and cheap .
    • 104 4  Drive works OK but I can't believe how noisy it is . Way too noisy to use inside a PC in a quiet room . Loud hum is a real distraction . Probably why the drive is so cheap . I have taken it out and will only use it as a backup drive in a dock and won't buy Hitachi again . Let's see , Seagates are crap . Hitachi's are noisy crap . What's left ? Oh yeah , well at least most WDs are OK .
    • 112 4  I've dealt with Tiger Direct and would not deal with them again . Do a search on Tiger Direct and scam and you'll get 126,000 hits . May be OK if Amazon stands behind it ( but didn't they buy Audible . . . ? ) .

  • 035 4  I bought this hard drive to replace the stock 160GB hard drive in my TivoHD . Item shipped fast and came well packaged from Amazon . One month after installing the drive , I have not noticed any issues with this new 1TB hard drive , runs smoothly and quietly . If it were not for the extra storage space this drive provides , I would have thought it was the original drive in the Tivo based on its flawless performance . The drive did not come with the AMA set to 128 ( this helps keep the drive quiet ) , so I had to download a small utility off of Hitachi's website to make the change but that took all of two minutes so no problems there . I can't speak as to how this drive performs in a PC or a Mac , but if you are looking to upgrade the hard drive in your TivoHD and want a drive that is 100% compatible and will perform as quietly and efficiently as the stock hard drive in the TivoHD , then definitely pick this hard drive . You won't be disappointed !
    • 033 4  DO NOT USE WITH THERMALTAKE BLACX ( eSATA / USB 2.0 ) docking bay . Good hard drive as other reviewers have pointed out . Its actually a pretty quiet hard drive ( I think its actually quieter on spinup than my WD Eco Green 1.5TB drive ) . Problem is that I recently purchased the Thermaltake Blacx ( esata + usb ) hard drive enclosure . The Hitachi Deskstar just refuses to show up whichever connection I use . The Blacx works fine with a Excelstor Jupiter 250GB hard drive , as well as the aforementioned Eco Green 1.5TB .
    • 045 4  This replaced my HP computer ( HP6230n ) orginal HD which was giving SMART errors . Installtion was easy . minimum noice level . Only complaint is no software utility to disk mamagement from hitachi .

  • 037 4  I have been buying Hitachi hdd's since I read that Google uses them . I assume ( hope ) that this drive is as reliable as other Hitachi hdd's have been . This particular drive is noisier than all other recent drives I have bought , but I don't mind a bit a feedback to let me know what is going on in an almost subconscious way . I used HD Tune Pro to reduce the AAM value to 190 , which provides just a tiny bit of background noise . Reducing it to 128 as one of the other reviewers mentioned makes it completely quiet to my ears - - too quiet for me . If noise makes you crazy and you don't want to tune it down , I'd suggest a pass on this particular drive .
    • 074 4  I purchased this drive as a replacement for a 5400rpm drive I was using . I didn't see a lot in the way of reviews for drives used hooked up to a PS3 so I thought I'd let you know it works well . I have this in an external enclosure and plugged into one of the PS3 ' s USB ports . I have noticed a good speed increase over the 5400 drive I was using before when accessing my music , videos , and pictures . Formatted to FAT32 with no problem using a free tool called guiformat .
    • 101 4  received my drive ( 1tb ) on the 7th and got it installed today , and it's working great ! it was immediately recognized , and set up was easy through right clicking on my computer and then selecting manage . as for the noise , i can't hear it . i do have a antec 900 case , which has 5 fans on it . . . all set to high . i couldn't imagine how quiet of a pc you'd have to have to actual be able to hear it . anyways , it's also running nice and cool . my primary drive in my computer is a 500gb western digital caviar green drive , and they are both running at 25 degrees celsius ( everest ultimate edition ) .

  • 039 4  I purchased this a month ago and it still works . If it is still working 5 years from now , I will know that this is as good a hard drive as I suspect . The hard drive that came with my computer died after 2 years . Fortunately I had backups . One external drive that I used as a backup was the same as this Hitachi . I decided to use a new one as my main drive . It has worked as expected . I always hope my hard drives will last forever , but that has not been the case . One in four has died from one cause or other . At my job I have used this same model drive as a backup device for over a year . No problem . I have used another at home for several months with no problems . This one I purchased has gotten my system back up and running . For now I am happy .
    • 004 4  I built a Linux Raid Server using 4 - 2tb Hitachi HD32000 Hard Drives in Raid 5 configuration . I then used two Seagate 250gb in Raid 1 for the Linux OS . This setup works great . I wanted to use the Seagate 1.5tb but there are problems with the firmware and Raid 5 configurations . The Hitachi's on the other hand have worked perfectly . I would recommend this to anyone building a solid Raid 5 setup looking for the best combination perfomance & value per tb .
    • 023 4  Before making this purchase I read other reviews which guided me to get an inbox product . It had all the required cables and software to easily connect it to my computer . There were no install or configuration issues . I have no reason to believe the drive will not be extremely reliable . There is no operational noise that some drives were describe to have . Read and evaluate the reviews to determine where they suit your needs . Normally I wouldnt take the time to write a review but since I got the request from Amazon I figured why not . I have made about 10 purchases from Amazon and never have had an issue .
    • 029 4  This 1 TB drive works just like I expected . It's quiet , and so far it does the job . I'm sold on Hitachi drives . I have 4 of them ( 2 1TB , 1 500GB and 1 320GB ) with no problems yet .
    • 048 4  This is my second Hitachi hard drve . The are more reliable than Western or Seagate . Never had a problem !
    • 066 4  In spite of complaints on this board , I think the drive is very quiet . No problem in any respect and it seems very fast .
    • 072 4  Like other open-standard hard drive , this Hitachi drive works as expected with the Thermaltake docking station .
    • 075 4  We bought 5 of this hard drive . They work perfectly . And it is the best price I can find . Good deal .
    • 079 4  This drive had a great price to performance ratio . The noise is not as bad as I thought it would be . The installation was easy and so far no problems whatsoever .
    • 081 4  I have 5 of these drives , this one being my 4th and they all are working great , I love them . Have had 1 for over a year with no trouble what so ever . the rest are from 6 to 1 mo . old . All where recognized without a hitch . Hard drives fail sometimes but these drive are the least problematic and I have had or been around WD , Seagate , Toshiba , Fujitsu.Maxtor and Samsung drives and have had failures in all of then but the Toshiba . ( my Samsung was drop and caused its failure ) I trust my Hitachi's .
    • 092 4  What can I say ? ? ? It is a hard drive . . It works , just as I expected , no more , no less . . . Well packaged , fast shipping , discounted price . . . It is a fast drive , holds lots of data , and is quiet . . . Unless you have need for a terabyte of continuous space , divide into four or five partitions . . Why ? ? Defragmenting 250 GB is an overnighter , you can imagine how long it takes to do a 1 TB ? . . . It seems like a good drive , would I buy another ? ? ? Hopefully , not for a while . .
    • 110 4  I just pickup one today at Frys , its DOA . Very disappointed . I purchased 2 more few months later because it was on sale . They are HOT , much hotter than my Seagate and Western Digital , at least 10 Degrees hotter . They are very slow for some reason . I would not recommend this drive . I'll purchase a different drive to replace the Hitachi .

  • 083 4  I am beefing up my Windows 7 Media Center and filled the first 2 drives . The drives are fast and quieter than I expected from the reviews . I keep the PC in the closet so its not in the open but next to it I didnt notice drives louder than normal . I hope they last since I have a lot of data to lose .
    • 043 4  just used for external storage so I can't really rate the speed or reliability yet - but was a pretty good deal at only $79
    • 050 4  Works great - - right click on computer with windows 7 then click on Manage then click disk management for setting up
    • 062 4  Works as expected . I used it to upgrade an HD TiVo box and have no issues with it so far . Its a little noisier than the stock drive but I didn't run the quieting program on it ahead of time . You still can't hear it unless you are within a couple of feet and then its not that bothersome .
    • 107 4  I think some companies are not ready yet for big sizes HD . This HD hangs my PC inmediatly with the Click of dead . I don't recomend this drive . I had better luck with WD before . Avoid this drive .

  • 087 4  I've had downloads running on the drive for 36hours straight . I'm not experiencing the loud noise as everyone else is . I only have 2 fans in a retail HP tower , the entire computer is whisper quiet and still I'm not able to hear this hard drive . I bought the drive to replace a failing 360 GB Seagate for media storage , and couldn't be happier with my purchase . The price for this 1TB is unbeatable and the read / write speed is the same as any of the rest . I was worried about the drive after seeing the retail box was in a shipping box three times its size , with only one tiny air bag on one side for shipping . The retail box was able to bounce around the shipping box from all sides . But I installed the drive and its working quiet and fast . I will update the review when / if the drive fails within one year .
    • 010 4  I've running four of these Hitachi 1TB drives in a RAID 5 array , I've had zero problems so far . I only considered Hitachi or Samsung 1TB drives since Western Digital and Seagate cripple their consumer drives for RAID compatibility , google TLER RAID for more info . The Hitachi drives I received were the newer 7K1000 . C models meaning the drive are made up of two 500GB platters and use less power than the B models . For hard drives , fewer platter means less chance of hardware failure . It's also faster compared to a 1TB made up of three 333GB platters .
    • 054 4  Bought it when it was on sale at Amazon . 1TB 7200 rpm retail pack for less than 70 bucks was a great deal , but the price went up significantly since . Seems to perform well , although time will tell whether it will last , and I've only had it a couple months .

  • Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I purchased these drives directly from Amazon at the $69 price , not from other online affiliates like Tiger . I have purchased three of these drives and several other Hitachi models over the years . I have had zero issues with them - no bad sectors , no drive failures ! All very positive . As the technology evolves , platter density increases and consumer installations become more prevalent , there will be higher reports of issues . It is simply a statistical fact . I have experienced issues with both Western Digital and Seagate drives although both companies did replace the units with no questions asked . But I can honestly say that even from from the days of IBM involvement with Hitachi , I have never had a problem with this brand of drives . I own models going back as far as 2002 ( 20GB ) that have never had even a bad sector . I am sorry to read the previous bad review here on Amazon but drives do fail and it can be very traumatic to lose valuable data . It just has not been my experience with these drives . Of 61 current reviews on the Egg for the same drive , 95% are positive ( 50 five star , 8 four star and 1 three star ) . Perhaps I have just been lucky ! Hitachi has earned my loyalty . BTW , the Egg sells these for $20 to $30 more depending on the day . Amazon lately has had the best prices on all computer accessories including Apple products .

    • 015 4  I purchased this drive from Amazon at a great price considering the 1 terabyte size . So far it has proven to be reliable and quick . While it seems that many prefer the better known drive makers they are missing out on a great drive when they don't assess this one . I have purchased Deskstars since they were an IBM company and they have been the most reliable drives I could ask for . This particular item comes with the SATA cable which is convenient , took only about 5 minutes to install and the only part that was time consuming was a full format which is advised for any new drive . The capacity is right for me at this point in time but I am already keeping an eye out for the new 2TB drive at a good price . Speed is not an issue since it is the new 2 platter design and has higher data density than the old models . I notice some have mentioned the noise of the drive . The only noise is the heads and only noticeable with the case open and it is doing multiple seeks . Once I put the cover back in place I no longer notice it and it has been on 24 / 7 since I installed it . In all you can find faster drives if you need a drive for servers but for me it is a single user machine and there is no reason to spend a lot of extra money for an increase in performance so slight you might never notice it . I am thrilled with Hitachi and am glad Amazon is such a competitive vendor of their products .

  • Hitachi 2 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD32000 IDK / 7K ( Electronics ) First thing I want to point out is I am reviewing 2 new 2TB Hitachi SATA drives . No where in description , nor on the box does it say SATA - 2 / 3GB . But yes , they are SATA - 2 for sure . On the drive label it is marked SATA 3.0 GB / s , RPM : 7200RPM . So there you have it , true SATA - 2 drives . Next issue I've read in various reviews including these 2TB drives is that they are noisey and enabling aucoustic control ( I know I forgetting the exact name and should list the command but at the moment escapes me ) . It was suggested to reduce these loud drives . Well , from being used to WD , Seagate and the other main brands of HDD makers , these are drives , especially for 2TB each are no more noisey then my WD250GB , WD500 , Seagate & WD 1TB's and other older SATA drives . That being said , to be honest , they are fairly quiet . Another issue . Heat . I read these run hot . Well in running a whole bunch of SATA1 & 2 drives on my systems , 2 different releases ( looks and all ) of WD250GB with the same part code from different years dissipate heat differently . My WD500GB SATA2 runs fairly cool , as do both my WD Black and Seagate 1TB drives . I will say I think the WD1TB runs a bit cooler than the older 1TB Seagate . But compared to my older 2 identical 200GB Seagates and the older 250GB WD , these Hitachi 2TB drives run much cooler . Note : tests were done under full loads of moving files , stressing these Hitachi drives out with multi-tasking copying from older drives . They got about as warm as my 1TB drives . So , maybe older versions from Hitachi ran louder and hotter then what I received from Amazon ( Retail Boxed drives ) . So far pulling out my older 2x200GB drives from the case for these was like gaining 3.6TB more HDD room . I paid a little more than what I see listed now , but don't regret it . In all my usage of name brands I have primarily used Western Digital and Seagate . Heck my oldest HDD I have left is a SCSI 500MB Seagate drive that NEVER had one single problem and still works perfectly . I've had with these two brands , 7 or more WD's go bad or die flat out . 1 Seagate slowly went south , got a new one RMA'd years later after warranty and still was able to recover about 98% data off it before mailing it off . WD , still never fufilled my dead / or chock full of bad sectors / wrecked platter or head gone bad a knocking , replaced . WD CS Dept isn't so good , in my opinion . . Fujitsu and Hitachi not so much experieced with . But so far so good . No problems . I won't buy from Samsung because they wasted about half a year on fixing a newly bought LCD monitor that died ( power death ) , recieved a trashy replacement in a week , sent it back and took almost half a year to get the one I am on now . And it's scratched up . So , my appoligies for drifting-Samsung is out permantly for me . People have their favorite brands , I tend to stick with Seagate . . being as they were ( and I think still are ) the leaders in SCSI high-speed drives . Sure they had a slump and sold off IDE 160GB drives for dirt cheap left and right , but they worked well . So I bought alot of SATA drives from them . Now back to these Hitachi drives . They have been hot-swapped , stuck in enclosures for both USB and eSATA as well as a docking station . Sure they took a while to full clean new format . Some posted alot of DOA drives on the egg of these and when they worked , used slow formats and got alot of bad sectors . So with these I formatted them NTFS sloooow format , with CRC error checking . Both came up 100% fully working . So I put them through some stress tests as mentioned . Both work as would expect , quiet and fast 3GB / ps ( SATA-II ) . Hot-swapping works flawlessly with these and they will be mounted in my case soon . Had to rebuild Vista x64 Ultimate due to an uninstallable SP2 beta problem ( by the way , MS never sent me any notice of a SP2 uninstall tool nor notified me when SP2 final was available , as others have reported also happened with Auto-Update turned on , Genuine Auth Utility etc ) . So NOW with a fresh clean install of Windows , I decided to remove the old 2x200GB drives ( will go to another older system ) and put these 2x 2TB Hitachi drives in . Oh also of notice , I have all my SATA drives outside my case at the moment . I noticed some drives under pressure would ' bump ' the desk I'm on , as in I could physically feel a slight movement of activity . These Hitachi drives do not at all . I would say for the price , the storage and that they are not the new-green problematic drives they are nice . Almost bought some WD-Green drives but went with these , and after reading the odd problems with the green drives from WD I think I made the right choice . Ok green , use a little less power , but todays SATA - 2 & 3 drives are energy efficient enough . Just look at some charts , and decide are green drives that much worth the risk ? WD sure has changed their line of Green drives alot since introduction . Some are not even compatable to systems due to using the new format system . So buyer beware , read about your drives before deciding especially larger storage like 2TB , if you use any RAID arrays etc . While I did not RAID these two 2TB Hitachi's ( I rarely RAID anymore anyways ) , I would be confidant in say a 4x 2TB RAID Array with these . Date made are NOV 2009 , Firmware 20N and don't be fooled by the techy specs on the case stickers vs fancy WD labels . These tell all you need to know flat out , LBA , CHS etc etc . Both made in Thailand . While the books are sparce , they are to the point . In box is drive in anti-static sealed bag w / the candy bags ( moisture absorbant ) , booklet , SATA - 2 Cable , 4 screws and 2 plastic retainers to hold the drive in place . They work well , I like them , and that's what I wanted . . . right out of the box .
    • 003 4  This drive was quite loud when I installed it , but that was because AAM was turned off and the value was locked at the loudest setting . Once I changed it to the quiet setting with the Hitachi Feature Tool , it worked much quieter . Pros : - This is a very fast drive . I got transfer rate of 135MB / s at the outer edge of the disk , dropping off to around 65MB / s at the inner tracks - Very quiet once the AAM is enabled and set to the quiet value - It is a 2 - platter design , which is more energy efficient and theoretically less prone to head crashes - Retail packaging means you are not taking a chance of whether a bare drive will be packaged properly , and a cable is included as well . Cons : - It is fairly loud out of the box with AAM turned off . It is a low-pitch rumbling instead of clicks when seeking - Does not come with backup / imaging software in the box like similar Seagate / Western digital retail drives .

    • 008 4  I have just purchased this drive and it produces more noise when accessing data randomly than my 3 case fans plus CPU fan plus video card fan plus my other 3 HD's TOGETHER . What's worse , Hitachi simply removed the option to alter the AAM ( Automatic Acoustic Management ) parameters from their Feature Tool utility since its version 2.13 . If anybody else was unfortunate enough to purchase this drive , here's the solution : get the freeware utility WinAAM or the more sophisticated HD Tune ( not freeware ) , boot the system with the HD set to IDE mode in the BIOS ( AAM can't be altered in SATA / AHCI / RAID mode ) and set the AAM value to 128 . There will be NO noticeable performance penalty ( I did A LOT of testing with HD Tach ) and the absurd noise will disappear . I tried contacting Hitachi's support about this but they didn't seem to even bother reading my message and sent me a standard copy and paste reply . This will be my first and last Hitachi hard drive EVER .
    • 009 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I've running four of these Hitachi 1TB drives in a RAID 5 array , I've had zero problems so far .
    • 011 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) 14 months ago , I purchased an Iomega 1TB external hard-drive , even though many , many reviewers suggested a higher than average failure rate for external drives . In 30 yrs . I had never had a hard-drive crash on me , so I thought they might be over-reacting or just unlucky . Low and behold , exactly 364 days after I bought it - 1 day before the warranty ended - it crashed . Big time . So now I've purchased an internal 1TB Hitachi drive . It's a typical hard-drive , fast and quiet , very large capacity . The primary reason for my doing this review is to agree with 100 ' s of reviewers who have been noting the unbelievably inadequate PACKAGING that Amazon is now doing as a matter of course . I'm not talking about the ' hassle-free ' or the ' green ' packaging , I'm talking about throwing a sensitive piece of equipment into a huge box and not adding the packing material needed so the customer will receive an UNDAMAGED product . I did order the drive , but I ordered the RETAIL version instead of the OEM bulk drive . Doing that meant the drive would be packed in a shock-resistant shipping box and hopefully arrive in usable shape . It did . That was early Jan . and everything's OK so far . I just don't understand their poor choice in regard to packaging . What do you think ?

    • 014 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I purchased this drive from Amazon at a great price considering the 1 terabyte size .
    • 017 4  This review is from : Hitachi 2 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD32000 IDK / 7K ( Electronics ) My case might be one of rarity and it probobly is .

However , mine would do a very noisy click , click , click seek every 5 minutes that I could hear from 5 feet away . So I returned it . If it didn't have that it would have been a keeper .
    • 022 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) Before making this purchase I read other reviews which guided me to get an inbox product .
    • 024 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I bought 2 of these drives last year from Amazon for $69 .

I've had the first drive for over two ( 2 ) years , and never a problem . Both of my Seagate 500 GB failed within five ( 5 ) month , I was lucky this was a RAID 1 setup , and I stated backing-up all changed files every night .

    • 030 4  This review is from : Hitachi 2 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD32000 IDK / 7K ( Electronics ) I was a very happy when I got this HD but it has failed ( stopped working ) just after 3 months of using it . Win7 had notified me that one HD is failing and sure enough , it was the brand new Hitachi 3TB HD . Fortunately I had enough time to transfer important docs and pictures to my other backup HD , but overall what a disappointment !
    • 032 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) DO NOT USE WITH THERMALTAKE BLACX ( eSATA / USB 2.0 ) docking bay .
    • 034 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I bought this hard drive to replace the stock 160GB hard drive in my TivoHD .
    • 036 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I have been buying Hitachi hdd's since I read that Google uses them .
    • 038 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I purchased this a month ago and it still works .

But today Hitachi's drives are just as well regarded as they were with IBM's label , and are tops in the field . These new high-capacity drives work perfectly in a Mac OS X system , and should work just as well in a Windows or Linux installation - - provided the chassis supports drives of this size .

    • 057 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) While looking for an external hard drive to use as backup for my desktop , I ran across this one on sale .

    • 063 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) This HDD is exactly what I needed to replace my old HDD on my Dell C521 .

Thanks .

However , the performance seems to be top notch ( e.g . , 125 MB / S ) . Hopefully , the noise isn't a long term reflection on the drive's reliablity . Also , as much as Amazon is my first choice for buying most items , I cannot recommend purchasing hard drives from Amazon . The drive was shipped in a large box with almost no protection inside to keep it from bouncing around during shipping . FOLLOW UP : After a couple days use the drive is now running quiet and cool .

    • 073 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I purchased this drive as a replacement for a 5400rpm drive I was using .

It is loud in a quite room however it's super cheap storage . I've since bought 7 drives total , this drive is good . Just very loud in quite rooms . Fast , large and cheap .

The noise is not as bad as I thought it would be . The installation was easy and so far no problems whatsoever .
    • 080 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I have 5 of these drives , this one being my 4th and they all are working great , I love them .
    • 082 4  This review is from : Hitachi 2 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD32000 IDK / 7K ( Electronics ) I am beefing up my Windows 7 Media Center and filled the first 2 drives . The drives are fast and quieter than I expected from the reviews . I keep the PC in the closet so its not in the open but next to it I didnt notice drives louder than normal . I hope they last since I have a lot of data to lose .
    • 084 4  This review is from : Hitachi 2 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD32000 IDK / 7K ( Electronics ) I use these drives for my photo server and for my personal items . I use RAID 1 configs in my file server for my photography business and I like having that piece of mind that if anything should happen I always have a backup . I think that these drives will be around for a long time since it will take SS-HDDs a while to catch up to this density . . .
    • 086 4  This review is from : Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK / 7K - Retail ( Electronics ) I've had downloads running on the drive for 36hours straight .
    • 088 4  I have had two of these 2 TB hard drives running in a RAID 0 configuration since November 2009 . Naturally these disks are very fast in a RAID 0 configuration . My primary reason for buying a Hitachi drive was for the 2 TB storage capacity and 7200 RPM rotational speed . This is the first time I have purchased a Hitachi disk drive and I expect to purchase two more in the future after the price drops below $150 . The price back in November 2009 was over $200 . Eventually I plan to run four of these disk drives in a RAID 10 configuration to achieve both high performance and reliability via redundancy . I still feel a little uneasy at the moment running in RAID 0 . But so far , I have not experienced any problems whatsoever . Even so , I have an external hard drive for data backup . That works for now because the data I have stored is far less than the 4 TB of storage capacity I have . Unrelated system configuration : I am using a Corsair 128 GB solid state disk for the Windows 7 operating system with an Intel i7 920 processor . I have 12 GB of triple channel RAM . I am running the CPU at 3.8 GHz at the moment .

Now I just installed one drive with that much space in my wife's photoshop monster computer . It was very easy , just mount it to the case , plug in the SATA and power connectors , then format in windows XP . So far everything is great ! She now has a place to dump all the huge images her professional digital camera generates . I can't attest to the drives reliability . I still wonder if I missed something in the drive's specifications that make it inferior . But the performance seems just fine . Note that we are not using it as the boot drive ; just a place to store a lot of photos from her photo sessions .

? ? Hopefully , not for a while . .

I've had Hitachi's before and never had a problem . I set this one up as a secondary drive and had a little trouble getting the computer to recognize it , but that was not the hard drives fault . It was a matter of changing CMOS settings and figuring out how to get VISTA to format the hard drive .

My products came to me as promised and in good shape . all parts of the buying experienc were easy and safe . The only bad point was the amount of time it took for the free shipping . Overall I was pleased with the purchase .

It's a pretty quick drive with 32MB cache and runs at 7200RPM . It's SATA so installation is super easy . It's also very quiet . Now the only thing left to determine is reliability . But I've had Hitachi drives before and they've all held up well so I expect that this one will as well . All in all , I'm a happy camper .

Threw both of them in my Windows Home Server . Added them to my storage group . Whole process took less than 5 minutes ( took longer getting them out of the box ) . Also got two SATA cables out of the deal that I didn't need for my install . Will pick up the 2TB later this year when it goes down a few more dollars .

This HD hangs my PC inmediatly with the Click of dead . I don't recomend this drive . I had better luck with WD before . Avoid this drive .

Radio Shack does not carry them in store , so I just ordered one online for $0.95 . Nice going Hitachi , for less that a buck you created an unhappy customer . I'll be back with the rest of the story after my cable arrives . . . . . . . . OK , I got the cable in just a few days , install was easy , the drive runs great . There were no instructions about needing to format the drive , but Window's Help and Support got me going . Not bad over all .

    • 111 4  [ UPDATE 2 / 1 / 10 : If you are having problems formatting here is something that helped me . . . Make sure your SATA drivers / firmware are up to date ! If you are still having problems I used EASEUS's Free Partition Manager and was able to format the drive with no problems . I'm amazed at how much better EASEUS was at formatting the drive compared to Vista's built in Computer Management control panel at doing a simple NTFS volume format ] . Picked up this drive on sale thru Fry's for $149 . Installation of SATA drive was straight forward . The formatting of the drive was not ! The Hitatchi instructions do not give any info on how to format your drive . It merely states to use your Operating System's drive formatting tools . It would have been nice if they included the basics . Using Vista's Classic Control Panel's Administration tools I kept getting format could not complete error messages . Kept trying different settings ( quick format , NTFS ) and even tried Acronis Disk Director to do the format to no avail . After researching it for 2 days I found someone else having a similar problem and it turned out I needed an updated BIOS and SATA drivers for my NVIDIA 680 SLI motherboard . A quick Format only took a couple of minutes , but since this drive is a replacement for a dead SeaGate Baracuda I wanted to do a full format and lock out any bad sectors so I don't run into problems . I used my control panel's computer management to mount the drive as RAW . I then looked in Windows Explorer and found the new drive and did a right mouse click on it to do FORMAT ( I found this to be better than using computer management to do the format since you don't get a progress bar , just a % read out ) . It took several hours for the progress bar to budge , but now 2 days later I'm finally at 50% . Two more days and I'll finally have this bad boy fully formatted NTFS ! ! ! Not sure if any of this is Hitatchi's fault , but a better installation guide and web site for trouble shooting would do wonders . As for the other posts complaining about noise , I don't notice it . Then again my rig is an Alienware 51 with lots of sound insulation . The drive slot uses plastic hot swap rails so maybe the lack of a metal to metal connection reduces the noises .
