Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot

  • 006 4  Given the list of criteria that matter most to me for a point and shoot digital camera , I seem to keep coming back to a Sony model as much as I try to explore the field when I'm in the market for a new camera . This time around as I was preparing to update from the Sony dsc-p200 I've had for 3 - 4 yrs , I wanted a more pocketable formfactor , optical image stabilization , closer macro focus , higher MP rating while maintaining at least the level of image quality I get from my current P & S , continued access to manual control of shutter and aperture and , finally , a wider angle + longer telephoto range . Tall order it seems in the P & S category . At first I rejected the w300 because of its pedestrian 35 - 105 mm focal length , though it had everything else I was looking for , but subsequent investigation didn't turn up many other options that didn't offer some other tradeoff . When it came to evaluating the relative merits of the various tradeoffs I determined that the focal length wasn't my greatest concern , based on my photography habits . And where there are not remedies for the shortcomings of the other cameras I considered , Sony does offer the option of wider angle and telephoto lenses for the w300 . So the w300 it is and what a camera it turned out to be . Nearly doubling the the maximum resolution of my current P & S camera while not introducing any more noise to the picture , the image quality is superb . Fine details come through in lower light conditions where other 10 + MP cameras I tested would lose those details in aggressive noise . Color temperature is perhaps a little warm by default but easily manageable while framing the picture or in post-processing and isn't generally displeasing by any means . I wouldn't claim a trained eye for objective image quality but I know what I like and this represents the single most important factor in a camera purchase for me and the w300 puts a lot of others to shame in this regard . I've seen others mention that the w300 experiences some noticeable color fringing but I haven't seen it in the shots I've taken so far ( 600 + ) . I make heavy use of the burst function on my P & S cameras , so it's nice to have the expanded options the w300 has over the p200 - not that the newer options are out of the ordinary now in newer P & S cameras . In particular , the infinite burst shoot mode is fun although , besides needing to drop resolution to 3 MP for each shot , it also seems to degrade image quality . The burst modes generally perform well but occasionally stutter and seem a little less reliable than the burst mode on the p200 in that regard . Of course , this may have something to do with a higher volume of data overall while writing to the standard MS pro duo card I currently have ( as opposed to one of the Extreme cards with higher transfer rate ) . I also use the Macro focus capability of my camera heavily and I appreciate the ability to now focus as close as 5 cm . That would seem to be as close as I'll need to get to most subjects and any further cropping around the image subject in postprocessing will retain a picture with enough resolution to still make the picture suitable for larger printed shots , thanks to that 13 MP sensor . I can't speak to the stuff like facial recognition and smile shutter as they aren't of primary interest to me and I haven't really used them other than in an in-store demo for my wife . It certainly handled a transition from a feigned grimace to a slight smile in smile shutter mode but that's all I can offer here . I prefer the minimalist menu UI of my p200 and the other Sony cameras of the time , but the w300 is not alone among new Sony models or among other camera brands in bringing more flash and better than 8 - bit iconography to the menu navigation system . There's simply going to be some adjustment required , so not a knock against the camera , since everything seems to be organized logically enough . As much as I tried to make a break from Sony's digital cameras this time around , it still ended up being a Sony model that had the best combination of features that appealed to my photography tastes . I think the w300 more than holds its own among the top competitors in this class . This also seems like a respectably future-proof P & S camera unless something remarkable happens in optics in the next few years .
    • 001 4  To start things off , please . Do not listen to the reviewers who said that the lens is poor . The lens on this camera , when compared to the lens on the Canon Sd790IS , Sd1100IS , and SD770IS , simply trumps them in every way - from middle to the extreme corners of the image . The canon , however , becomes very blury toward the edges giving a kind of motion feeling - not the sony . Some say the canon shots look for colorful and eye-popping . To achieve shots like this , simply go into program mode , adjust the image sharpness to + and the color mode to vivid and the pictures are the same , if not better . The sony outdoes canon here by adding in a Dynamic range optimization in three steps : off , normal , or extra . With this , the camera can achieve a great range of colors in both the highlights and shadows of a shot . Where as the sony doesn't have the color-swap wiz-bang functions , it does have more usefull settings like the Extra High Speed Burst setting , which can take 5 Frames per second ! I tested this with my dog rolling around in the yard , and at each frame the camera had shot at such a high shutter speed my dog was stopped in time with out any blur . These pictures are only at 3MP , but are still very respectable for a camera that can fit in your shirt pocket . Also , the camera has program settings to bring out different colors in an image to achieve a certain look . Either Blue , Red , Green , or your can change the image to warmer or color depending on the shot you want to take . The green mode is very usefull for macro nature shots . Also - 13.6 megapixels may be to big for some people ( roughly 5 - 5.5 MB's per image ) , however when you turn the notch down to 8M , Bayer Interpolation goes away on the sensor , and the picture quality , in good light , starts to approach starter level SLR's , when the noise reduction is set right . Simple do a search on Flickr for W300 to see what i mean . One small gripe though - you cannot zoom while recording video . You CAN zoom before starting the video , but once the camera starts recording you cannot zoom in or out any further . I also purchased Soft Carrying Case ( Genuine Leather ) LCS-TWB for DSC-T100 , T75 T70 , T25 , T20 , W90 , W85 , W80 , W55 , W35 black with this camera , and although the case doesn't even mention this camera in the compatibility list ( I believe this camera came out AFTER this case ) the case works wonderfully with the camera , and makes the already exuding quality of this product feel even more classy . P.S . - > Nikon Is going to use the Sony developed sensor in this camera on their upcoming P6000 flagship advanced P & S , adding to the credibility of this camera .
    • 002 4  To those that are blaming the lack of sharpness on lens quality . . . I think the lens is phenomenal considering the size of the sensor . I myself personally own a canon 700 IS , and this camera as well . I have spent ample time framing the same shot with both cameras and changing settings on both cameras . In my opinion the sony IS capable of creating very sharp pictures superior in both color saturation and exposure then the canon series . It just isn't as obvious to do it as the canon as the canons don't offer near the amount of manual options that the sony offers . They pretty much lock the consumer into making good pictures and the consumers think they're the greatest . That said , even a digital SLR can take very poor / soft pictures if you don't focus correctly . Spot , scene , average focusing can cause lots of problems with sharpness . To make the sony perform as a Canon series camera would , place the camera into the auto mode , enable the iSCN option ( not iSCN + ) . No muss no fuss sharp pictures just like Canons with in my opinion more vivid pictures and realistic colors . At least compared to my canon 700IS . Either way , both cameras are great , both cameras have their shortcomings as they are compact cameras , but every digital camera is capable of taking great pictures . Just have to spend more time learning about it and trying to get the best performance out of them .
    • 003 4  I must start by saying that this camera ( DSC-W300 ) is the first digital camera I have purchased . I have some experience with 35mm SLRs , but I wanted a versatile piece of kit that would enable me to upload pictures to the internet , print directly from the camera , and add images to my PlayStation 3 console . The first thing I should note , and as indicated by the above comments , is that I think compact cameras are fundamentally utility devices . There are many people on the internet who criticise this model's unsuitability for longer-distance and wide-angle photography , and the lack of many video modes . On the first point , I would say this : compact cameras are designed for high quality close-up images ( family and friends groups , primarily ) and are not designed for vary-focal images ( e.g . , someone standing 300 yards in front of Mount Fuji and expecting both to be in focus perfectly ) . On the second point : movie modes on a still camera are a lovely bonus for a camera but are an add-on that should not be counted towards any final evaluation of the product . Sorry to sound snotty , but those are the basics . So , does the W300 add up for the basics ? Clearly , the Carl Zeiss lens is going to deliver on the bread and butter family snaps that is always going to be the brief for compacts . The 13.9 megapixel rating is useful , although the 8MP setting offers fantastic quality images that can be converted to 16 : 9 1080p for viewing on televisions . It is true that the .9 of a MP seems to have been lost in the implementation of actually taking photos , as the highest setting is the flat 13MP ! There are the usual ISO presets , automatic and night settings , as well as smile detection technology . Again , the brief of a compact camera has been observed well by Sony , weighing easy-of-use against range of use . This is again apparent in the neat Movie Mode : the 640 fine and standard image settings are perfectly acceptable for on-the-fly movies showing the drunken antics and practical jokes that are the stock-in-trade of the light-hearted situations that the W300 predominantly deals with . The MPEG - 1 video format is also compatible with Windows Media Player and the PS3 , among others . The software that comes with the W300 enables the user to add their photos to a calendar on their PC , and even add location details for each picture via internet maps . The standard easy-to-use image manipulation features are there , again underlining the pick-up-and-play nature of compacts . Videos can be converted to WMV , too . On the downside , the zoom is only x3 , meaning for the occasions when it is needed it is not as versatile as , say , some of the Panasonic models . Secondly , the battery life is not quite what I expected ( quoted in the manual at 150 minutes - with LCD panel switched on - for taking pictures alone ) , and the charge time for a full battery is a whopping 330 minutes . These are the only significant drawbacks to the camera that I have found thus far . Build quality is excellent , as expected from a Japanese-made product . The LCD screen is more durable than I had expected , and its 2.7 size is more than large enough for viewing back and editing any images . My first impressions of this product are very positive . As a compact camera the DSC-W300 is a very capable camera , with many of the intelligent design features expected from Sony . However , for those wanting a decent amount of zoom or other quasi-SLR features , it may be best to go for another model , or just take the plunge and go for an SLR instead .
    • 004 4  I bought the new Sony Cybershot for my husband for Christmas 2008 . He had the older model of the same camera , but had many complaints . Fortunately , it seems Sony has listened to what consumers disliked about its previous versions and has corrected everything about it . ( Given we've only had the camera a few weeks , but so far so good . ) Here are THREE major aspects we disliked about the OLD Cybershot and how they have been corrected ( at least to our knowledge ) : 1 . ) OLD - The old Cybershot didn't have a viewfinder , and on a sunny day you couldn't see what you were shooting because of the reflection off the LCD screen . NEW - There's a viewfinder ! This was seriously my first criterion for buying a new digital camera . 2 . ) OLD - It could not handle photographs at nighttime . Everything always turned out blurry and the colors distorted . NEW - the new , more user-friendly camera now has a setting which makes night shots a breeze . And the red-eye removal even eliminates red-eye for my blue eyes , which I rarely see the true color of in pictures because my pupils are always enlarged . 3 . ) OLD - The batteries went like hot cakes ! NEW - Now , the Cybershot comes with a lithiom ion battery which holds up well and it includes an easily portable wall-charger ( NO CORDS ! ) . Overall , we are truly enjoying the new Cybershot . It's sleek , thin enough to fit in most pockets , user-friendly , and the picture quality is excellent with the 13.6 megapixels . We highly recommend this Sony if you're in the market for a new digital camera !
    • 009 4  I've purchased a new Sony DSC-W300 camera just a few days ago . I mostly take pictures of landscapes and architecture so I wanted some higher-resolution upgrade for my current Sony DSC-T100 camera to be able to take more details of each scene . Sony states that T100 is an 8 MP camera and I believe it is not less , but definitely not more than 8 MP . It is important , because having read many critical reviews on the W300 ' s predecessor - DSC-W200 I was concerned about the actual picture quality of the new W300 and did some comparative testing altogether with my current T100 camera . My first impression on W300 - nicely looking well built ultra-compact P & S camera in a dark-grey titanium body which seems to deserve $350 I paid for it . Because the main reason to buy this camera was to have those 13.6 MP resolution , my further review is mostly based on that criteria . Positives : Looks and feels like a real Sony high-quality product . Has a good 2.7 display which you can still use even in a direct sunlight , however with less visibility than the T100 ' s one in the same light condition . An optical viewfinder is a big plus - it is tiny and cuts a significant bottom part of the picture but might be very helpful on a bright sunny day and especially for the beach photos . The menus organized as the same way as in T100 plus several new features like the ability to choose the noise reduction level , to invoke the picture's dynamic range compression so you can have more details in shadows on the highly contrast scenes , contrast and sharpness adjustments , etc . The colors are great - as the same as provided by T100 but with slightly more saturation . I read many enthusiastic reviews on the Kodak cameras especially regarding their colors quality , so about a month ago I purchased their new 12 MP V1273 still camera with HD video feature . V1273 really could take the real 720p HD video , but the colors on still photos were far away from that Sony's level , so I just returned back that camera to Kodak . To be consistent I have to say , that the poster-size printing I ordered from Kodak Easyshare web-site of some pictures taken by my T100 camera were of a very good quality . The movies taken by W300 are almost the same good VGA quality as of T100 but with remarkable lower noise which comes at the cost of slightly less sharpness . The sensor of Sony's W300 camera seems to have the stated 13.6 MP resolution , but you can not really see that because of the low lens quality and here is where most of the problems come . Problems : The biggest issue of the new DSC-W300 camera is its poor lens which is a root cause of all its quality problems . The thing is - you can not take a full-size 13.6 MP pictures . At most wide lens angle ( 1X ) the actual picture's resolution is not equal from side to side : it is high in the center with a big degradation to the edges in both directions . Imaging a circle in the middle of your picture with the diameter approximately 60 percent of the picture's width . The actual resolution inside that circle is remarkably higher than on the same picture taken by T100 , so I believe it is around 12 - 14 MP , but everywhere outside that circle the resolution gradually degrades and near the edges it is noticeably less than of my T100 with its 8 MP so I could estimate it as dropped down to 5 - 6 MP . If you are to take a shot of a group of people occupying the whole width of your frame then I guess those on the sides would not be happy with their blurred faces in comparison with the ones in the center . On the other hand , if you take a full-body portrait of someone with the vertical frame orientation , then most probably his / she's face would happen to be in that relatively blurred area . When you apply the full zoom ( 3X ) but NOT the digital one , the image resolution becomes equal across the frame and everywhere is lower than provided by my T100 , so it looks like 5 - 6 MP on the whole picture . I'm not sure if it's exactly the zoom or maybe AF problem , but it is the same on different photos . And one more thing : when you apply zoom on T100 you can set any gradation you wish , but on W300 when you release the zoom button it does not stop immediately and continues changing on its own for a while so it hard to get the zoom degree you want . It is not mentioned in the camera description , but unlike T100 in W300 you can not use zoom while capturing movies . I would assume if Sony provided an appropriate lens like the T100 ' s one then W300 might be one of the best P & S cameras because that picture resolution issue was one and only I experienced while everything else was very good . If most of the time you take pictures of your family and friends , your kids and pets ( not a big group ) who are next to you ( zoom less than 2X ) and place them into the middle of your photos then kindly disregard the above mentioned issue - it will not bother you , and just enjoy the incredible picture colors and clarity provided by this Sony camera .
    • 011 4  This is my third Sony digital camera . I started off with a Sony DSC P72 , a 3.2 megapixel workhorse that used 2 AA batteries ( that unfortunately drained pretty quickly . . . ) . That's when my love affair with Sony digital began . That camera provided me with some really memorable pictures and it's still gong strong . Currently being used by my daughter , but now that I've picked up the W300 my daughter stands to inherit my 2nd Sony digital a DSC W50 , a 6.0 megapixel gem that I've had for several years and has given me so much pleasure . So when I started thinking about upgrading I started checking out other brands such a Nikon and Canon . I was primarily looking for another point & shoot because that is what I love . . . the convenience of a small camera that can be readily available to shoot my pictures . Now I'm not a professional wannabe in any way . . . and the Nikon Coolpix S600 was a camera I seriously considered but after laying my eyes on the Sony DSC W300 and that beautiful titanium finish it was all over . Now this 13.6 megapixel monster with all of the amazng features crammed into a svelte looking design was too good to be true ! Now my brother-in-law had shown me his Canon Powershot G9 which I thought was a really fine camera but then again . . . I like slim and compact and especially Sony so when I saw this gem it was pretty much all over for me . Now to what I like about the camera . . . for one thing this camera is good looking ! It caught my eye right away and the titanium finish which is advertised as being scratch free is pretty awesome looking ! This camera is very similar to my W50 in a lot of ways so the learning curve was fairly minimal although I am still learning new things about it every day ! The feature I really like is the face detection technology and the unique smile feature which works great ! Now the output of the pictures I've taken so far have been phenomenal ! Like I said I'm not too keen on photography related terminology but I know what my eyes tell me and when I load these pictures onto my Macbook Pro they look fabulous ! Now this review is not as technical as what you would read on cnet or some of the other sites where this camera is featured and if you're looking for that type of review I would say go and visit those sites but if you're looking for an individual's assessment of his experience with this camera keep reading . This camera takes great photos ! It's feature laden . . . and looks great ! It is fairly compact and in my opinion is a pretty decent value for what you get . Now with all the cameras out there sometimes it may feel really overwhelming to try to make a choice but because of my experience with past Sony digital products I knew that I could count on an overall fulfilling experience ! The colors are rich and true and the addition of face detection technology and smile have definitely made photographing people more satisfying . As a recap , this camera is definitely a nice piece of work from Sony . . And as my daughter will be inheriting my W50 . . my dad will be getting my P72 which wlll definitely be a step up from his 10 + year old Epson digital . . . . We are a Sony famly . . . the products are top of the line and well thought out . . . you can't lose getting this great camera !
    • 013 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) I have the DSC-N1 and I just got this camera ( DSCW300 ) . The N1 is wonderful with the touch screen and all but I wanted something that takes better pictures . The N1 is only 8MP while the W300 is 13MP . Additionally , the W300 has so many features you will wonder if you will ever buy another camera . The only GRIPE I have , and I can't believe no one else mentions this , is the on / off / power button on top of the camera is so small and burried in the camera - anyone with large fingers may struggle with turing the camera on . Outside of that , everything positive that every user lists here in the comments about this camera are true . WHat a nice looking camera it is too - WOW !

    • 015 4  This is a really nice camera . It's really compact , takes good pictures , and the titanium coating makes it really durable . The only thing I could add to the positive sentiments already expressed on this page is that I have dropped my camera , and it has come away from the incident unscathed . Granted , I dropped it onto carpet , but it was over 3 feet , and the camera was on at the time ( i.e . the lens was protruding ) . Zero damage . Great camera = )
    • 016 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) I have finally had this camera longer than a week and feel I can make a solid assessment of how I feel now . To put it lightly , I have been less than impressed with Sony P & S cameras over the last say 3 - 4 generations . Not since the 2 W series ago ( The W5 and W7 ) have I truly been happy with their compact series . I think the new line of W cameras , including the cheaper lower MP ones , has brought Sony back into the battle for top spot . I have been using Canon Elph cameras for awhile and this camera with its fairly small size , huge feature set and great picture quality is awesome . I would rec this to anyone who takes photos seriously . I would say though that it is at the higher end and the cost shows that . Maybe this IS NOT the camera for you if you just need something for your family shots and a few days outside every other week . BUT the lower end W150 , W130 and W120 are great alternatives at a much lower cost . All you really lose is some resolution and a few of the features most of which are not totally needed . Hope I help in your search . . cheers

    • 021 4  I got this camera just in time for my vacation and I can say that I am very pleased with this camera . I wanted a camera that can produce good image quality for both outdoor landscape and indoor low light . And so far the W300 does not disappoint . I used Sony DSC V1 before . Although the V1 can capture good image quality , taking shots in low light produces shaky images most of the time . The anti blur feature of the W300 solves this problem . Browsing the menu and manipulating the parameters ( aperture and shutter speed ) are a breeze . This is useful for amateur photographer like me to play around and experiment with different settings . If there is anything that I really wish it has , is the wide shot ( 16 x 9 ) capability .
    • 022 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) This is a great camera , especially for anyone who wants the ease and convenience of a pocket camera without sacrificing the quality . The picture quality is phenomenal and is so user friendly , anyone can use it . Aside from that , it has many extra features , video , smile capture , sepia , fireworks , etc , all that you'd expect in a digital camera . Plus , the ISO versatility is so great , you can take a photo indoors without a flash , which is great at art museums and places where flash photography is prohibited . But , best of all is it's size . You can carry it in your hip pocket and never miss that opportunity for a great picture , plus it's made from titanium , so it's pretty durable . A great camera , I highly recommend it . Another fine product from SONY , leader of the technological industry , how could you go wrong ?

Sony has never failed to please me with ANY of their products . The pictures are crisp and loaded with color . All of the functions this camera has makes it versital and just fun . Simple to use and offers clear control options . When you first pick it up , you feel the quality build of this unit . Glad I bought this one , sweet camera .
    • 027 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) People that downgrade this camera don't know how to use it . Read the manual - it may take a few hours of your time , but it is worth it . It's pretty much scratch proof . It takes great pics in low light-and I had the model that was out a year before that this came out-this is MUCH better . This has steady shot so you don't have to worry about a shaky hand . This is the kind of high-end item that could actually be a classic and sell for more in the future . I don't know how Sony can top this ! Loaded with features ( that you actually can use ) . Extremely light ! !
    • 033 4  I use this Cybershot W300 in auto mode at an 8M setting . It replaced a Panasonic Z3 . The W300 takes outstanding crisp colorful indoor people shots w / flash ( this is what I most enjoy as the Panasonic gave me many grainy flash people shots at more than 4 ft distance ) . The outdoor pics are also great . The high speed burst mode has helped me capture wonderful pics of a baby that won't sit still whereas the Panasonic would miss more shots to blurr . The burst mode uses only 3M & no flash but looking at the resulting clear indoor day pics I don't miss the extra megapixels or the flash . The limited 3x zoom is annoying particularly for video recording . This is one of the areas where my Panasonic is superior . The W300 video quality is excellent - - you just can't zoom in much at all . Another negative is the battery charger provided takes 5 1 / 2 hrs to charge . You can buy a rapid battery charger . Also be aware this camera doesn't come w / a case .

    • 040 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) Captures great images , easy to operate and offers the convenience of pocket camera . Over comes many of the limitations I experienced with an older model compact camera .
    • 043 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) Pros : small and easily trasportable , compact . Nice options for settings , but not extensive for a camera of this price . Tough , neat-looking camera . Cons : make sure you buy extra ( at least one if not more ) backup batteries . This camera will go through a battery in record time . And , it will stop functioning even before the camera icon indicates that it is totally discharged . The only warning you get is that it will stop focusing , and audible tones are not heard . I like Sony and this is a great camera , but for the price I would have expected more . The pictures are good , but I was expecting much higher quality due to the advertized high pixels . My Canon Powershot A700 , 6.0 mega pixel , takes the same quality picture for a lot less cost .
    • 044 4  Pros : small and easily trasportable , compact . • 045 4  I bought a DSC-W300 from Amazon in late April 2009 , shortly before departing on an extended trip to China . I already had a 2001 - vintage Sony digital camera that I'd enjoyed very much through the years , not to mention a Sony camcorder ( Guess I'm partial to Sony ) . I figured a new camera was justfied by this rare trip abroad . Here's what I liked best about it . Even in a padded fabric case , it fit easily in my pants pocket , where it was accessible with only the small delay required to pull it out and power it up . That felt very liberating , compared with having a larger device swinging uncomfortably and conspicuously on a strap around my neck . I'd thought the abundance of megapixels would mean even crisper photos than my older Sony had taken , but in these early snaps with it , I often ended up with blurred or grainy photos . No doubt , that was due to my failure to use the right settings for the shot presenting itself . On the other hand , at least I got a picture . If I'd had a larger camera , it might not have been with me all the time . The use of past tense above is due to the fact that my daughter left the camera on a table in a public place in Tianjin , China , and it disappeared . My reaction to having lost it has been visceral . Despite the problem with using it correctly , I had grown very much attached to that camera . I would have bought another already , but the price has jumped significantly . Even used models now go for more than I paid just a few months ago . I guess that's a sign of its popularity . If this sounds like the kind of camera you can use , do buy it . But please keep it in your own custody . ( If you happen to have an extra lying around that you aren't using , please contact me ! )
    • 047 4  Outstanding camera in every respect . I've owned several digital cameras in recent years , both Nikon SLR as well as Sony point & shoot . The W300 ' s large LCD , the quality Zeiss optics , and the overall ease of use top any of my previous small cameras . I use the W300 for both land and underwater photography and it performs flawlessly . As an accomplished photographer , I'd rather admire my photos than fiddle with equipment - - so for me , the simplicity is good . The close-up capabilities and the high-resolution images rival some SLRs . Good job Sony !
    • 052 4  I have a high end digital camera but it's too big to carry with me to catch a casual shot I might run across . I did my homework and chose the Sony 300 . The steady shot gives crisp photos in dim light when the shutter speed is slow . It has the feel of a well constructed camera and the Zeiss lens gives a sharp image from edge to edge . I bought a leather case for it to protect the finish from scratches and abrasions while being carried around in my pocket or backpack . I saw a few reviews where owners complained about the tele being only 3X but when designing a zoom lens , the greater the range you give it , the more compromises the designer has to make . I find 3X more than adequate for what the camera was designed to be used for . That is , family , parties , vacation , etc . If I want to do some serious telephoto work I'll bring my other camera along . I almost took a star away for ease of use because there are so many options available to chose from . Then I remembered I could simply put it on the full auto setting and all I have to do is aim it and push the shutter button . I'm willing to pay a little more for quality and with this camera I feel like I got my money's worth . It has both the look and feel of a high quality camera . I'm very happy with my purchase .
    • 053 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) The overall quality of the Sony Cybershot DSCW 300 13.6MP looks very good , but unfortunately I can't actually try the camera because Amazon sent me a camera with a battery charger that can't be used in the United States . In speaking with Sony , I learned that the charger I received is the charger that is used in countries other than the United States or Canada . Sony has graciously agreed to send me the appropriate charger free of charge .

The battery doesn't hold a charge , It's okay if you plan ahead and pull the battery and charge it up first , but if you need it on a whim the battery is always dead . My old Kodak would stay charged for months and would always be ready when I needed it . Not this camera , I can never rely on this and would never buy another Sony camera again .
    • 057 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) The number and type of features seems very straightforward and easy to use with this camera . Unlike many point and shoots , the DSC-W300 actually focuses quickly and accurately . Light exposure is also done very well . Sometimes Sony puts out cameras that don't do one of the above so well . Case in point : DSC-W290 . It frequently takes pictures that are blurry , despite taking too long between the button press and the picture actually being taken ( during which time it's supposed to be optimizing the focus , amongst other things ) . ( By the time the picture finally does get taken , whatever you were hoping to capture is probably already over . ) Watch out for Sony's deep discounts on the DSC-W290 , it's because relative to it's predecessor the DSC-W300 & some competitor's models , it's a lemon !

    • 063 4  Camera is great , considering its size it has the biggest sensor any manufacturer puts into a point and shoot ( including Canon ) . Here's a hint on how to get great pics : Use mode ' P ' then turn the noise reduction to low ( dont need that taking away sharpness ; the noise levels on this camera are already pretty low ) . Turn the DRO feature to DRO plus , and take full advantage of a very powerful image processing chip inside this camera . Of course its a little slower shot-to-shot this way but the quality makes up for it . I am using it at 8 MP setting , leave the auto illuminator on for faster focusing too . Also recommend using face detection ; works pretty well . If you must use the auto flash then put some distance between the subject and use the zoom to diffuse the flash . Also ' P ' mode lets you change the white balance to pre-programmed values which can make a big difference . For good videos , zoom to about 2x or more before recording . Then try to make sure your subject fills most of the shot ( but not too close bc the AF will go blurry ) . Why did Sony stop making this camera ? Because its so great and so popular ? Or could it be that they weren't getting the markup that they are getting on others like the W290 ? One time a SonyStyle sales rep told me ' they are basically the same but the W290 can do HD video ' . What a bunch of bs . People buy a P & S for pictures first then video second .

Only problem is the LCD at the back gets grubby with finger prints but what camera these days doesn't . My favorite feature is that any of the menu options come with a short blurb as you change them , no need to memorize the symbol or the manual .

    • 079 4  I compared both the Canon SD 870IS and the Sony DSCW300 . I chose the Sony over the Canon primarily based on Sony's SUPERIOR image quality . However , Canon did excel over Sony in the following areas : 1 . Canon's instruction manual is included in the box . Sony provides a brief instruction manual in the box which covers the basics . If you want the whole instruction manual you must download it from a cd which is in the box . Canon's instruction manual comes in a small book-form which is easy to take along on trips . 2 . Canon's software ( on the camera ) is easier to use . 3 . Canon's instruction manual is easier to understand .
    • 081 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) I am sending this camera back for a second repair since September . The camera doesn't hold up . The first problem occurred within the first few days after my purchase . It could not be shut off ! Now I cannot change modes or settings without the camera returning to playback which prevents accurate changes . This is my last Sony . Sister-in-law bought a dsc-w55 last year , had to send it back within the first week . Sony replaced the camera . Seems like Sony's quality is failing .

    • 086 4  Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot Very nice color camera . Able to take a quick snapshot . A little heavy .
    • 087 4  I think this cam is perfect , no problems Pienso que la camara es perfecta , no he tenido ningun tipo de problemas
    • 088 4  I had the exact same issue as photo AM Vlad below The biggest issue of the new DSC-W300 camera is its poor lens which is a root cause of all its quality problems . The thing is - you can not take a full-size 13.6 MP pictures . At most wide lens angle ( 1X ) the actual picture's resolution is not equal from side to side : it is high in the center with a big degradation to the edges in both directions . when shooting in 16 : 9 , the edges were completely distorted . My WSC - 50 takes better pictures . Returned .
    • 090 4  This review is from : Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot ( Electronics ) The Sony DSC-W300 ( Titanium ) Rocks in every respect and I just have got in love with this digital camera . I think I have fallen in love with photography now after using this exceptionally powerfully and loaded with features camera , The Sony W300 . I was in 2 minds whether to buy the T500 , T700 or the W300 . I am very happy I made a good choice by selecting W300 . The pictures are crisp clear and even on high ISO levels the quality is amazing . Amazon's shipping is super fast ! If they continue providing the A + service I will be their customer for lifetime . And btw , the price was the best I found on google and nobody beat Amazon's price . Thank you Amazon !

    • 098 4  I just want to say , that everyone who had a Sony before , knows very well what does Sony matter ! It's high quality , strong , precision built , fast working , ultra intuitive , high performance device , which cannot be compared to any other ! DSCW300 is just a Sony ! If somebody wants something better . . . hmm . . . may be needs to try on a different planet . : ) Sony is the world leader in the Audio / Video industry . They had the best professional Audio / Video equipment and of course use these technologies in their everyday-life products . I had 3 Sony camcorders for the years now and would never buy anoder but Sony . My friend Filip have a Sony DSCP200 camera with over of 40,000 ( ! ) pictures taken for 3 years and is still working like new . 100% satisfied with the Sony DSCW300 and would buy Sony again !

  • 007 4  It's a good little pocket camera and meets my needs for an easy-to-carry camera with lots of features . I mainly bought it based on reviews from Amazon and have been satisfied so far . However , the usual description of What's in the Box was not there , so I unnecessarily ordered a charger for $44 just to be sure . There is one included with the camera . Maybe I can use the extra one when I leave the first one in a motel room somewhere .
    • 020 4  I did a lot of research before purchasing this point and shoot camera and definitely made the right choice . I love the burst mode . It's like using a DSLR camera . The pictures are beautiful . Much better than my older camera as far as blur and clarity . This camera also takes faster pictures than my older camera , both for the first picture and subsequent pictures . I am extremely happy with my purchase . I love this camera !
    • 034 4  This camera is everything I thought it would be from reading the reviews . It's sturdy , which is a plus for me because I broke the last camera I had . It's great for amateurs and professionals alike . The in camera editing is great , I recently went to a wedding and was able to edit my pictures right inside the camera with great results . I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a higher end camera that won't break the bank .
    • 035 4  I love this camera . I am not very digital oriented growing up in the SLR days , but this is a wonderful camera that takes beautiful pictures ! It is also very easy to use . I highly recommend it for anyone !
    • 039 4  I really liked the Camera , its really fast to take pictures and the quality is superb ! !
    • 041 4  Captures great images , easy to operate and offers the convenience of pocket camera . Over comes many of the limitations I experienced with an older model compact camera .
    • 068 4  I was looking for a point and click . This is exactly what I wanted . It has a fast recovery time , and the battery lasts a long time . I like the way it's easy to figure out . I also bought a 4G memory stick and an extra battery , so I'm good to go !
    • 071 4  This camera blurs my pictures . I am not a pro photographer by any means , but this camera makes things much more difficult then my old cybershot . I am selling this one on eBay and going to buy the cybershot T900
    • 074 4  This camera is the best for its size . if you want a small camera that can be curried everywhere with you , you need to buy this one . if you want a better picture quality , try to see hi zoom or SLR
    • 102 4  Kemp is right . It is NOT IN STOCK . Amazon just keeps moving back the date it will be in stock . I was worried it would not arrive in time so I canceled my order . These review are the only way to let people know about a problem like this .

  • 008 4  After a week of owning this camera , I have been very impressed . The in-camera editing modes are actually really cool . Not sure that I needed 13.6 mp , but bragging rights are always cool . Screen has been very impressive , though I hate the half-second loading / refining delay when browsing through your photos - - common to all cybershots - - though it's much improved over my old k790 cybershot . battery life has been fine . smile shutter is a lot of fun , but embarassing when it can't detect smiles ( doesn't like detecting people with ugly smiles , or people with hats , I think ) . Movie mode works well , and the slideshow thing is pretty fancy , with different music choices , even ! I miss the BestPic and landscape feature that I had on my last cybershot , though . . .
    • 028 4  People that downgrade this camera don't know how to use it . !
    • 056 4  The camera itself is great But I can't ever use it . • 019 4  I bought this camera because I need a compact camera that I can fit into my pocket . The camera does have good quality material , it gave me a solid feel when I hold it in my hand . However , the downside is the picture quality . This is a 13MP camera , the picture is bit blur unless I turn the noise reduction feature to its highest level . The speed of the camera also is bit slow , my son have to hold his position for extra second after I press the shutter . The connection cable is not the universal USB cable , which is make it little inconvenience . Finally , I wish it accept SD card . But overall , this camera looks pretty , and has above average picture quality .
    • 010 4  This is one sweet looking camera . The design is excellent . The built quality is very high . I have only taken a few shots with it so far , but they look very good , colorful and sharp . Image size is about 5MB at full resolution , so you get about 800 images on a 4GB card . I am using the Sandisk Ultra II 15MB / s card which works great . Recommended . Updates : 1 ) the colors on the auto settings are not as vivid , but you can control that in the P mode - I set it to Vivid which works well outdoor but not so well indoor 2 ) if you shoot video , be sure to set it to Fine quality . The lower settings are not that good and a bit jerky . Still happy and pleased , this one is a keeper 3 ) the battery life is not so great . It seems to be discharging while not in use . I recomend getting a backup one ( np-Fg1 ) . 4 ) still can't quite figure out low light shooting , but daylight pictures are amazingly sharp and vivid
    • 048 4  Easy in all aspects . Great quality / workmanship in all ways . Picture quality is excellent , and image sizing easily set to suit your needs . Uploading images to your PC is a cinch . Fits in my pant's pocket - thinner than most . A great feature . My one wish is that it had a USB cable - battery charging capability , but that is not a big drawback . I bought one for my daughter and then had to have one myself .

  • 024 4  The images are amazing ! ! ! it's a very light camera to carry . Great price for an amazing camera . . . many features are included , which can be used to take Black and white pics and you may even make a slide show with music . . everything included in the camera . . . Very very good !
    • 049 4  Sony has been around for a long time , and they have a great reputation , all my stereo components are Sony. This Sony camera is compact , lightweight , and takes great photos.Great zoom , much better than most cameras , the overall performance is awsome !

  • 030 4  After a lot of research on portable cameras , I decided to go with the W300 . Had considered the W290 due to 5x zoom versus 3x for the W300 . However , the W300 has a larger sessor and is much thinner with a Titanium coated shell . Picture quality is better on the W300 than the W290 based on shots I've seen but you lose the wide angle ability which can be a plus . Net net I went with the higher priced W300 . The only problem I have is the battery / memory door cover seems a little loose . Had checked out three other W300 ' s and they are all loose . Morover , on some of the W300 ' s the top chrome bar is loose on one side . I rate this camera a 4 instead of a 5 due to build quality . If you hold the camera using the bottom edge , the door can even open up while shooting if you are not consious of that possibility . Is yours also loose ?
    • 012 4  i love this camera had it for a month already its so easy to use and upload great picture quality would like more of a zoom so i'm going to purchase the adapter for the camera to get a better zoom on it . i took this camera to a disney on ice and it was really dark but the camera took great pictures and my friend who had a cheaper camera was taking very dark and not focused pictures your going to love this camera .
    • 061 4  I am using this item for long time . . . . Good look , Light Weight , Good clarity of pictures . . . mostly I'm amazed with the ' Steady Shot ' pictures , works well . Battery life is good .
    • 078 4  This camera is simply amazing . It has so many EASY to use features and settings , that other digital cameras look like disposables next to it . The BIG seller for my wife and I was the mega pixel count . We have already taken two pictures and blown them up 8X11 and one larger while retaining the crystal clear look of the original shot . We also plan to by the wide-angle and telephoto lenses available for this camera . . . . YES , that's right , you can hook these types of lenses to this particular digital camera . If this camera had one flaw , it would be that it doesn't focus as fast as i would have hoped , but it is still a hell of a lot fast than our old one .

  • 032 4  I am disturbed that one of the poor reviews was from a person who reviewed the camera before it was even released . He gave the camera three stars . Official camera reviewing sites on the web have rated this camera one of the top compacts . There are a lot of Canon camera lovers ( aka Canon fanboys ) who post negative reviews of other brands , giving low scores to cameras they have never even held . Take one or two highly negative views with a grain of salt when the vast majority are positive . . .
    • 031 4  A very good camera for that money ! The quality of the pictures is excellent ! Amazing stability while taking night pictures . Very satisfied with my purchase . It deserves the money I have paid for it !
    • 046 4  I have a Sony that has a big zoom ( 14x ) but wanted one that I could carry in my pocket or purse . Consumer Reports rated this one #1 & I can see why . the lcd resolution is fantastic , next shot delay is very quick ( the reason I purchased it ) & the picks are very crisp . I'm not a professional photographer & my grand daughter moves quickly so that was important to me . I've only had it 2 weeks but love it !
    • 065 4  I have always bought Sony cameras and they never let me down , they only get better and better . The only con would be the zoom power but other than that the quality pics can't be better , when I send pics to friends and family always get complements for my pics , they ask me to bring my camera to every event because my pics are the best . . . . . • 089 4  It's worth it just for the smile finder . Everyone thinks it's the most amazing thing , they pass it around to try it out , and then you end up with millions of pictures of your friends smiling ! The only problem I've had is the zoom is not stellar .

  • 066 4  I used to have a Sony P10 for six years and I loved its image quality in My any light conditions , battery and other stuff except it size which is a little bit large . I tried many other Sony digital cameras ( T and W series ) since two years ago but they disappointed me one by one specially from image quality point of view . Sony Cyber Shot W300 is the best digital camera among almost eight Sony and Canon top digital cameras which I worked with since two years ago .
    • 042 4  This is a great camera . It does so much . Most people who write reviews for say , cameras , haven't taken the time to read the manuel . This camera does everything it promises and more . The only draw back at all is in the movie mode you can't zoom in and out while your filming .
    • 062 4  I love my sony cybershot ! I received this camera as a gift this past Christmas . It hasn't given me any problems . Pictures turn out amazing . My only complaint is when I upload photos to my computer , the camera doesn't seem to want to stay plugged in and so you have to be kind of careful . You can see some of my photos here : [ . . . ]
    • 070 4  We test drove the camera on a trip to New York the pictures came out really well . Only problem is the LCD at the back gets grubby with finger prints but what camera these days doesn't . The pictures are crisp and loaded with color . All of the functions this camera has makes it versital and just fun . Simple to use and offers clear control options . When you first pick it up , you feel the quality build of this unit . Glad I bought this one , sweet camera .
    • 029 4  I had a dsc - 90 stolen , so I thought I would upgrade a bit . This camera is much better than my old one ! Just be careful when ordering a memory card . I ordered a 8G card online , and found out it didn't fit . You can only buy SONY cards ! Nice pics . . . nice camera

    • 075 4  This is a great camera , I have just broken my old SONY N2 , bought this for replacement and very satisfied with my choice ! Also the price on Amazon is Amazing !
    • 104 4  AMAZON HAS TOO MANY PRODUCTS THAT DON'T SUPPORT THOSE SERVING OVERSEAS . FROM CLEANING CLOTHS TO CAMERAS . WHAT'S UP WITH THAT ? ? ? ? I'M SHOPING ELSWHERE FROM NOW ON ,

  • 080 4  Great camera . There is even a mode for VGA pictures . Don't buy into the hype that more is better . My wife could have gotten away with a 90 dollars Sony instead of this one . All she does is take pictures and email them . What a waste of money . However this camera when I use it is great . When you take photos of mountains in the distance they disappear in your photo . Probably due the small lens . Not enough light . Anyway this is a great camera for all around pictures . Distance shots ? Get an SLR or something with a lens bigger than a dime . Don't get me wrong ALL compact cameras are gonna have pretty much the same quality with a tiny lens . Just remember what you buy it for . My Panasonic sub SLR 5MP takes better pictures outdoors .
    • 060 4  I think its the best to offer in MP yet on amazon , i was lucky enought to buy it , great price , excellent images taken , if you love photography may be you will be lucky enought to find it .
    • 092 4  The Sony DSCW300 is an excellent camera . I did extensive research and comparison with other digital cameras from other manufacturers , and I come to conclude that the Sony DSCW300 is the one for me . I'm all about pixels , and this camera has 13.6MP that result in perfect resolution and provide exactly quality pictures . The other features of the Sony DSCW300 is good too . I strongly recommend to anyone who is in the market to buy a great camera to buy this Sony Cybershot DSCW300 .
    • 093 4  This was an upgrade to my 5MP camera that I have had for over 6 years . Intuitive features allow you to use immediately without reading the manual . Pictures are crisp and clear even really close close-ups .
    • 100 4  I have many Sony products in my home and never had any issues until recently . I purchase a Sony MP3 player for my wife and the headphone that came with it was absolutely horrible . I followed their procedure and wrote to the Review Committee without any resolve . I decided to get a little tougher , and wrote to the CEO , Sir Howard Stringer only to have both letters forwarded to the twinkes in the Review Committee . This is very bad customer service and with all the energy and the time you spend on dealing with a problem , the product ends up costing you double its original cost .

  • 095 4  Amazon lists this camera for $799.82 ! It sells anywhere else from $265 to $310 . Reviewers are complaining that the camera is not in stock but that Amazon does not reveal this clearly - a great disservice to customers . When I phoned Amazon to question why a great company such as theirs would even put on line a seller's price at three times the usual cost , I must have been talking to robots or people with low I。
's . The people I spoke with were indifferent , rude , and stupid in their comments . Each tried to school me in Marketing 101 . None could deal with my direct question about why Amazon on their network would allow any seller to offer a $300 camera for $800 . This is an insult to buyers . When I asked a manager for Amazon , who insisted that no one was higher up than he , whether they would allow a listed price of $10.000 , he said that no one would buy it at such a price . I said , Exactly , and who would buy the camera at $800 ? Like a robot , albeit not a smart one , he took me back to Marketing 101 . He kept trying to explain the free market to me , which was never my point . The issue is whether Amazon should allow any vendor to advertise such a price on this camera through Amazon . The camera may be wonderful , but Amazon has really disappointed this former friend and and frequent buyer . I am appalled . Shame on Amazon . I expect better .
    • 067 4  I purchased this camera around the mother's day . I haven't had a lot of experience with it yet . This camera is very easy to use . I took some pictures of the flowers , the color is very real . I tried to shot a short video , the quality is better than what I got from the mini-DV . So far I am happy about this product . It's amazing that the price is up to $700s . I got this one about $300 .
