Overall I still think the PS2 is a solid system.All three consoles have their strong and weak points.That's just a fact.The Playstation 2 may not be as graphically superior as it originally was , but then again , it was on the scene first.And if there is anything to be learned from this era , it's that time and technology march constantly forward.However , graphics aren't all to consider.It's irritating that some reviewers simply dismiss the PS2 simply because it doesn't measure up to their standards in that capacity.I believe grafics suks is the proper term . . . Honestly , I have considered buying an X-Box at times , especially with the recent price drops and system versatility.The graphics are impressive , but the problem is that the games simply are not there.And there has been lots of roll-out time to get games on the shelves.The only games that I would really want to play would be Halo or MechAssault.But 2 games just don't justify the expenditure.And if you are more interested in family / kid friendly titles , you may be out of luck.The reviewers that claim that PS2 owners are jealous of the X-Box games are rather childish.Unlike many younger , phonetically challenged reviewers , I have a thing called a job.If I wanted an X-Box bad enough I could buy it.There's simply not enough interesting games to be jealous of . . .
Gamecube also is a nice platform.But my only complaint here is lack of versatility ( no DVD / CD playback , limited expandability and somewhat limited online playing ) and the games are not quite as cutting edge as they could be and , overall , they definitely more family / teen oriented.However that is not precisely a negative though.That would depend on individual taste and preferences.But as a bargain , it can't be beat.It chimes in quite a bit cheaper than the other consoles but still offers great quality .
PS2 is somewhere in between , I believe.And as so many others have pointed out the PS2 is an enjoyable and capable system in it's own right.It is expandable to a good degree and has just undergone a price drop.Witness the recent HDD for the latest Final Fantasy game and USB ports.It plays DVD's / CD's without another purchase , has an extemely wide and varied selection of games and is backwards compatible with the thousands of PS1 games.That is a big plus for people with a collection of older games .
Overall , all three are superior platforms.Of course , this is coming from someone who was familiar with and played the Atari 2600 / 5200 . The really unfortunate problem is that each console is always going to have it's platform only games.But that kind of competition is always going to exist.It's a no brainer to realize the ultimate goal for these companies is long term profits.Charging $50 a crack for a new title should dissuade any doubters .
Realistically you probably won't go wrong with any of the platforms.They are all cutting edge and impressive.It would just depend on your gaming habits ( and type of games you enjoy ) to decide which is right for you.But if I were to have the choice over , I would still go with the PS2 just for overall performance quality and the libary of available games.At least until the PS3 . . . .
014 4 I'm very impressed with this console . I own all three ( xBox , GameCube and PS2 ) and while the graphics are generally better on the xBox and GameCube , the PS2 has by far the widest selection of games , including some worthwhile exclusives like Manhunt and Socom .
What I'm most impressed with is the foresight Sony had with the PS2 . Consider that the PS2 came out years before the xBox and Gamecube and it is able to connect via ethernet to the internet or a LAN . They even have an option coming out in March of 2004 to install a hard drive in the PS2 . This gives me a great deal of faith in Sony as a gaming company , and I can't wait to see what they come up with for the PS3 , announced recently .
Even though it is the senior member of the three consoles , the other two do not blow it away in terms of graphics or sound . I remember hearing about the new GameCube or the new xBox , thinking they would revolutionize gaming . . . nope . They might look a little better than the PS2 , but overall you have to give Sony credit . They built a machine that has stood up very strong to the new generation of consoles , and still offers a much better game base than both of them combined .
If you are undecided on a console , you may consider the PS2 above the others . You're not losing much in the way of graphics or current features ( i.e . online play ) , and you gain an entire world of game options .

I bought this in 2002 and I'm loving every second of it . This system is good for some reasons , 1 . Good styling , 2 . Can play DVDs ( without buying software ) , 3 . Classic games , 4 . Sony is a top notch brand . I bought this after looking at Nintendo Gamecube . In the beginning I thought that GameCube could play DVDs so I thought I would buy that because Nintendo has been in the gaming business for a long time . The clerk of the store let me look at a floor model . It was so small and after I saw the outside I knew immediatly that this wouldn't play DVDs . I asked the clerk if there were any other good consoles out and he showed me to the PlayStation 2 . He told me that this can play DVDs without any software unlike the Microsoft Xbox . He also said it comes with the most games and it is a bargain . I bought PlayStation 2 with like 10 games and I went home to play it . After I started playing it I knew I made the correct decision . I'm not dissing Nintendo because their graphics are better than Xbox's like Super Smash Bros . Melee . I just don't like Xbox except for Halo of course . I think that my selection would go , 1 . PS2 , 2 . GameCube , 3 . Xbox . I love PlayStation 2 and I can't wait for PSP and PS3 to come out !

This may not be the latest technology , but the DVD / Gaming unit is still very much a excellent unit to own . First off , the price today is very affordable , the game selection is excellent ( new and used ) , and the controlers and such are very similar to PS I , so not much transition to start to play this . I prefer this unit over X-Box original , even though X box does have a slight edge on graphics . Very solid unit , and one to buy if you want to have great graphics without the price shock of the PS3 and X-box 360 .

035 4 I've been gaming since years of Commadore 64 and Atari . The games on Play Station 2 have a much higher replay value and first play value than any comparable system ( X-Box and GameCube ) . I had an X-Box and got rid of it because there were zero good games out there for it . Granted , there are maybe 6 or 7 now . . . but not enough to warrant buying another X-Box . GameCube is fun because of course , all the great Nintendo games out there for it . . . plus Sonic . I mean . . . who ever thought they'd see Sonic on a Nintendo system ? And yes , I own a Game Cube as well . The Play Station 2 * is * lacking in graphical quality . . . not severely , but enough to the point that that's the only reason I didn't give the PS2 5 stars . The game selection on PS2 makes X-Box's and GameCube's look like a joke . Also , the PS2 is backwards compatible with a setting to up the graphical quality of old original Play Station games .
In short . . . if you want just pretty graphics . . . go with an X-Box . If you want a good console system with a large variety of games and will play DVDs right out of the box , go with a PS2 .
However . . . I've heard that if you use the PS2 for DVDs too much it will cause the laser to fail for one reason or another . After having mine for about 3 1 / 2 years it's just now starting to fail , and I fear this may be true . Oh well , time to buy another .
054 4 The PS2 is a nice , solid system . It doesn't have the timeless appeal of the GameCube , but it doesn't sink to the level of the pathetic Xbox , either .
Technology-wise , it's not as strong as either of the other systems . As we all know , it's the weakest graphically , and also has glitches like the occasional animation or sound problem .
In the software department , the PS2 delivers with grace . I found a moderately wide selection of fun games , many of which were exclusive to the system .
Although I've never experienced the problem myself , I've heard the news about disc read errors . . . kinda has me worried .

055 4 Regardless what sony says about the ps2 being available as a dvd player ( a good one at that ) its best to purchase a dvd player by itself to play dvd's and keep the ps2 just for games only as playing dvds on the ps2 will wear out the laser on it causing it to
have a shorter life span . While playing ps2 games the laser occasionally reads the ps2 discs whereas the laser has to constantly read the dvd discs to play the films and as lasers on dvd players last only a 1000 hours playing films it wont take too long before your ps2 can no longer play ps2 games either .
That being said the machine is fabulous , if not for the strength of the machines specs then certainly on its wide range of games available , the likelihood of the ps2 or ps3 being toppled by xbox or xbox 2 is pretty slim , given that the word Playstation is a popular brand . Companies that make games know this which is why there are lots of exclusive games for the machine , sony currently holds the biggest share of the gaming market , only just toppling over the pc machine now for sales of ps2 games , however theres no counting xbox out either , theyve got a great line up of games and its a fab machine , but if i had to choose between either as a gift ps2 would be #1

This is a great system mostly because of its huge game archive . It has twice as many as the other leading systems . Its graphics aren't better than the other systems and neither is its durability . After about a year my disc drive wore out and i had to mail the whole PS2 to california so they could put a new disc drive in . Cost me $50 for shipping and the part . But its nice features are the DVD player and CD player built in . So you can listen to music WHILE watching tv . Thats awesome . Since the new PS3 is coming out id advise you buy that , but then again you can probably get this cheaper too .

Such titles such as the Ace Combat and Final Fantasy series make it a good balance between performance and games , but it only has two controller slots and you have to BUY the multi-tap adapter for four controllers ( I think that was a wrong move by Sony ) . There aren't that many multiplayer games that are fun enough to give your opponent that IN YOUR FACE attitude . There are still not enough games to appeal to people with different interests . 072 4 This is in my opinion the best game system . First of all it's made by sony . I have allways had good luck with sony products . From tvs to cameras , sony has allways made good stuff . Lets talk about the system first . I have the older version which came only in black . Now though you can get on in black , silver or ceramic white . I lay the system down flat when I store it , as well as when I play it . The system is pretty light at about 6 pounds .
The controller is in my opinion the best controller of the last gen game consoles . You have to buy a memory card to save your games which is good if you have friends that play the games you do . You can just bring your memory card with you when you travel . Also , if you insert the memory card before you put a game in you can look through your card to see what games you have saved on it . This is good if you want to delete a game or make a copy of another . It also shows you the date and time you made the save . I though it was neat to see when I saved the games I saved on it .
The system plays very quietly and lasts a long time . I have had mine since like 98 and it still plays great . If you looking for a big game list , your in luck . If you look playstation 2 games up on amazon you will see more than 1000 ! They have games that more than likely everyone will enjoy . Now you can go online with the system . However I'm not sure how many games actually have online portions in the ps2 . It was to late for ps2 fans to care . Also , you could have a hard drive for the system for games like Final Fantasy 11 . I only have one because I beta tested the game and got mine free . I don't know if more than 5 games even use the hard drive . You don't need to have games to use it though . You can store all your ps2 game saves from your memory card to the hard drive . I have SO many saves on it . So that is one cool thing you can do . I am pretty sure the new ps2s don't even have space for the hard drive . So if you did want one you would need to get the older version .
They are still putting out games for the system . Some would say the graphics do not meat up to the new systems but I say so what ? I have a 360 as well as a Wii and I think the graphics look great . What it all comes down to is this , if your looking for a well know , long lasting video game system with a huge library that will keep you entertained for a long long time , then the ps2 is the system you should get .

It was pretty hard for me to decide which gaming console I'd prefer to have ( xbox , ps2 or gamecube ) . Just for the record I think I'd choose xbox . I dont care much for the graphics they all look good enough in all 3 systems , I'd choose xbox mostly because of the games it has to offer , and the controllers are most suitable for me . The graphics do seem to be better but again its not a BIG difference and so not a huge deal to me anyway . Its also a plus that you dont have to buy memory cards or multitabs . What I don't like about the Xbox is its size , its pretty darn big .
Gamecube's nice too , though it can't play dvds . The controllers work well but they're not comfortable to me . I can't really tell the difference in terms of graphics between the gamecube and xbox , in any case the graphics are fine . Its got some pretty good games but there are not many that appeal to me so thats the main reason why I wouldn't choose it .
However I think PS2 offers a wide variety of games , so its flexible for people with different interests . The controller's aren't bad , except I think its harder to reach the left joystick , and doesn't seem to be as sensitive as the other 2 console's controllers . Unimportantly I think the PS2 looks the coolest too . I recommend the PS2 for people searching for variety .

To start off i have the old ps2 verison , and i have had it for about 3 years now.I have always been extremly careful with the ps2 and for some reason it stop working . The point is I had it for a good 3 long years and you can send the ps2 back to sony and get a refurbished one for $45 ! Now that i have that out of the way lets began . I love my gamecube , i have metal gear solid the twin snakes , lord of the rings the two towers and return of the king , mario kart double dash , and splinter cell for it . ps2 has a few of these , but they just don't have much of their own voice . Xbox has unreal tournament and knights of the old republic . right now the only reason i keep my ps2 is because it would cost me $180 to get an xbox with the dvd remote , and i'd rather not have to get the extra piece .

I was in shock when I read all the reviews saying they had all these different problems and personally I have never had any of these problems what so ever . If you're buying the PS2 for gaming or as a DVD player you are getting your money's worth . I also own a Game cube and had an X-box . Of the three systems the PS2 is the most versatile in ' stock ' mode . With both the Gamecube and X-Box you need to buy additional hardware / software in order to play DVDs as opposed to the DVD ready PS2 . To date there have been over 100 million PS2 consoles sold throughout the world as opposed to Microsoft's 23 million and Nintendo's 22 million Gamecube units . Think about about it if 100 million ownners are proud of thier console won't you be too ?

089 4 If your try to deicde what video game system to buy , and have done some techinical research on the matter , the playstation 2 might seem like the underdog compared to the other systems available . There are , however , several reason to buy a playstation over the others depending on what your lookng for .
One thing to keep in mind about the playstation is that it , like much of sonys hardware , is not the most durable system out there . the power cord wears away easily , and disc read errors are not uncommon . If you however are careful with it , you shouldn't have many problems . It hardware is also the least powerful , but that only really matters for graphics and such .
The main advantage over the other systems that the playstation has is the sheer number of games that are availble for it . ot only does sony have a couple of good licenses of its ' own , it also has tremendous third party support from companies such as square enix , konami , etc . This means that if you do not have a particuler favorite genre of games , this system will satisfy your diverse tastes . It also means that the system can cover a variety of ages , so more than one age group in the household can enjoy it , unlike the relativly age baised gamecube and xbox .
Another advantage to the playstation is its size . While it is easy to agrue the size difference bewteen the playstation and the xbox , gamecube fans will likely say that that system is the best sized . To thiss I counter with the fact that the playstation can be propped on its side , so if you don't have a large area next to your tv , but have a tall slot , you can still fit it while the gamecube could not .
Going back to games , which is really the main concern when buying any system , the playstation is also a particlerly good choice if you have a favorite genre . The playstation is easily the best system for fighting games . It has a large supply of these games , including several cirtiically acclaimed ones , and has the best controlers for them , unlike the cubersome xbox and awkward game cube . It also is for role playing games , as it has square enix's support , who are argueably the best in the genre .
Lastly , one last advantage to this system is the multiplayer capability . Now most would argue that playstation is the worst for this because of the fact that it only comes with the ability for two players . Now when considering how many players you want to have to play a system , it's good to remember that you'll most likely be playing your system alone most of the time , which is where the playstation shines . It also has numerous games for two players , so it's good for when a buddy comes over . Now when you do have four people come over for one reason or another , you can play four player games if you purchase a multitap , so if this happens often you can deal with it . Finally playstation has online play . It has several good online games , including Final Fantasy 11 , which has many people playing it at the time of this review . The best thing about its ' online setup is that you don't have to have dsl / cable to play it , you can use dial-up unlike xbox .

Each system is great in its own way but people who bash are wrong because just because they dont like the games on the system doesnt mean they should bash it . cause it just depends what type of games you are really into .

154 4 I've owned the PS2 for about two years now . I have this system hooked directly to my home theater with an optical cable that gives clean images and great surround sound . The ease of use with the controllers is great . Most games use the same format when designing the controller setup and generally give you the option to change if need be , which I had to recently when one of my controllers R1 button broke . If you are interested in purchasing this product for the first time , my recommendation is to also purchase games with quality graphics to give you the real feel of what this game console can do . The game that turned me onto this console two years ago was Gran Turismo 3 ( my understanding is that GT4 is in final production ) , since then some of the better games I have played have been Ace Combat 4 ( 5 should be released sometime this year ) , Madden 2004 , EA NHL Hockey 2004 , and most recently Need for Speed-Underground . I generally don't play first person shootem-ups but Medal of Honor was a good game until the final levels ( then it just became absurd ) .
I have also used the console as a second CD player and once as a DVD player .
Because I am in the market for a new controller , I am currently looking at purchasing radio remote controllers so that people won't trip over the wires anymore . Trust me after becoming addicted to a particular game and playing all night ( which is easy to do ) Your sense of reality shifts a bit and the wires tend seek out the person trying to run for a beer or a bathroom break . I've played with one non-sony radio control and was pleased that there was no loss of reaction from the controller .
My one complaint about the PS2 is that the internal fan system seems to pull dust into the console rather than out . This is becoming a problem as the console ages ( 2 years now ) . Dust plays havoc on the lense creating hang-ups and more frustratingly not picking up a game disk at all when starting . I have other friends who have said the same thing . So this appears to be an expected problem based on the design . Therefore , I would recommend getting a can of air-dusting , like you would use for your computer keyboard to at least blow off some of the settled internal dust . Or , better but more expensive , prepare for a general cleaning from a game shop every year or year and a half .
Outside of that issue I would highly recommend this console for anyone interested in video gaming .
I give this product four stars out of five .

After shopping and comparing , we decided to get the PS2 for 2 reasons : 1 ) The price was good compared to the Xbox and , 2 ) Huge game selection for all ages and interests . A month after purchasing the PS2 we have got our entertainment value from it already . We hit the local video store and took many PS2 games for test drives . I like The Shadow of the Colossus , and the many fantasy and RPG games available . My wife loves good old Sonic , Pac-Man , and all the arcade games . My daughter loves Curious George , and Chronicles of Narnia . If you are looking for a family gamily system , the PS2 is flexible , and a great value .

My first video game console was a Sega Genesis , so it was so strange to try even a Nintendo or Sony product as I got older . I was glued and attached to my Sony Playstation 2 when I got it in late 2003 . To this present day , I still have it amazingly . The bulky model that sits instead of stands still plays on . I read about gamers that have to do that or can't get DVDs to play or some dilemma that lessens their experiences . I have been very lucky to not encounter any of these situations . My regular , bulky PS1 was not so lucky and had to be replaced as disk read errors reoccurred way too much . After 3 years , the only issue I have is waiting a couple extra seconds for the browser window to show up and read the PS2 disk . However , this has been happening for several months and it stills reads PS1 disks and DVDs perfectly .
Playstation 2 may not have universal games ( e.g . Mario , Halo ) , but it has an exclusive video game lineup that goes on and on . The graphics never cease to amaze me even when I switch to the newer video game systems . The controllers are very user-friendly . I don't find myself wanting to get wireless controllers , and the analog sticks so beat D-Pads . The advancements made with the Sony Playstation 2 are ground-breaking compared to when I first started playing video games . I am not much into PC / computer games , but the online capabilities via the PS2 would make me want to try !

Mine is just keep me happy . MY son and I played Grand Tursimo 3 and I can't wait for Grand Turismo 4 . I have all Onimusha 1 , 2 and 3 . Good games as we grow . 155 4 I've had my PS2 for about 2 months now and it's great . I watch dvd's on it . It can also play ps one games and its graphics are superior . The memory card for ps2 doesn't cost that much except you need a ps one memory card to save ps one games . No problems except for when my discs get damaged and it can't read them so treat your games with respect . Also if you want a console with lots of games this console's for you.I think it definitely deserves 5 stars .

This was a wonderful choice for me . I'm not into all the high tech game systems or games . It was also difficult finding one at a reasonable price without just having to break down and buy a new system . It was shipped to me in perfect condition . I could find no flaws any where . I really appreciate the fact that I can stand this system up which makes it perfect for my entertainment system . The smaller one would've been okay but I don't think it would've been the same . Any future products being sold by Mr . Eastland that would be useful to me , I would definetely buy first if I could get that chance . Just a suggestion to anyone else who may read this review , buy your products from Mr . Eastland , you will not be disappointed .

I've had my original PS2 since 2002 and never had any problems with it . Which is more then what I can say about my first PS3 . I bought a 40gig model January 2008 and by December that same year , it stopped reading blu-ray discs and games . I didn't bother getting an extended warranty because I figured it would work forever like my trusty PS2 . But boy was I was wrong . Consoles just arn't as reliable as they use to be , I guess . I ended up getting an 80gig model February 2009 and so far I haven't had any problems with this one . * crosses fingers *
So yeah , after all these years I still love my trusty PS2 . Even with all the time I put into Killzone 2 and InFamous , I still find time to load up God of War II or Jak 3 every now and then . And after I'm done playing every game on the system , I'll still use it as a dvd player until the day it dies .

I bought the PS2 for my daughter for Christmas and she loves it ! She's been playing it for the last three days ! I still see her occationally , when she comes out of her room to eat , get something to drink , or when her fingers are just tired !

I'm gonna be completely honest . I bought this more as a DVD player than for the games ! Is that weird ? But it works to wonderfully , no second thoughts at all . I've had it for almost 3 years now and I love it ! I do play a few games on it and have never had any problem with it's performance . It's a great item to so both . But i'm not going to lie sony does a great job on the ps2 . I'm not crazy about oh ( blank ) is the best hands down system period things . I'm pretty sure ps2 owns the most vast varietys of games out there at the moment . The system is good since you can play dvds and all but I am still a true nintindo man at heart .

I have owned this system for almost 4 years now and it hasn't dissapointed me yet . To me it's the best because of the wide selection of games . The PS2 has games for everyone ( from Spiderman to GTA ) and has a simple controller for everyone with small and big hands . The only problem is that you have to buy a multitap for 4 people and memory cards are needed . But the good thing about memory cards is you can take them anywhere you go . As for the games , I have 23 at the moment while my favorites are GTA San Andreas and Gran Turismo 4 . I could play those games for hours on end ( the PS2 won't heat up as quick either , that's if you have the thick PS2 ) .
Overall , this is the best system to buy right now . But at this time , I would rather just wait for the PS3 to come out .

The Playstation 2 is the best thing ever made by Sony . It can play almost all Playstation 1 games , and there is an endless selection of Playstation 2 games . Also , it can play some DVDs ( which is good because it seems that all my normal DVD players end up braking . ) . DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE THAT SAYS THAT THE XBOX IS BETTER ! And last but not least they have a singing game called ( not sure on spelling ) karioki revolution that teaches you to train your voice to sing high and low notes and sing on key . Grand Theft Auto III : A revolutionary action game which tells the story of some guy who got screwed in a bank robbery and ended up in jail , but he gets out and makes a name for himself in Liberty City as a criminal / driver . Very open ended gameplay , great story , great voice acting , great game . Some of the best car physics in any game .
Grand Theft Auto Vice City : Dubbed as one of the gorriest and most violent games ever , this game has earned its M rating . Set in the 80 ' s , the player takes the role of Tommy Vercetti , the king of a Miami Vice inspired city ( it's set in the 80 ' s ) when a drug deal goes wrong . You can fly helicopters , drive cars , drive motorcycles . It's pretty fun .
Metal Gear Solid 2 : Sons of Liberty . A very good stealth game based on the Metal Gear franchise . This game has a very clean interface and contains many new gameplay elements for stealth games . The AI is pretty good up until they shoot you , where you can take almost a whole clip from an enemy and still live , then eat a ration to gain back your health instantly . Still great , still fun .
Gran Turismo 3 : A-spec : I'm not big on racing sims because I know nothing about cars , but if your into that sort of game , this is THE racing sim to buy . Great graphics .
Final Fantasy X - An amazing RPG game from Squaresoft based on the Final Fantasy series . Probably the second best Final Fantasy game next to VII . I heard Final Fantasy VI ( or III in the U.S . ) was very good also , and I have it , but i never got a chance to play it . I like the characters a lot in this game . It's only downfall is in the voice acting of the 2 main characters . But otherwise , it's a pretty good game
Final Fantasy XI - Deviating from the classic singleplayer RPG experience Final Fantasy is known for , Squaresoft decided to make an MMORPG ( Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game ) . I don't have this game but I've seen demos and heard good things about it . Unfortunately , like most other MMORPGs , you have to pay a subscription fee to play it .
SSX 3 : Next to 1080 , one of the top snowboarding games out there .
Devil May Cry : Though he was a demon , the legendary swordsman awoke one day to justice . Alone , he defeated the demon army and imprisoned their emperor , Mundus , saving the human world from damnation . Sounds pretty cool right ? It is . Very fun action game that melds swordmanship and guns .
Ratchet and Clank : Going Commando : A very fun platforming / action game that , unlike most platforming games , has weapons . This game is the sequel to the original Ratchet Clank . I have not yet played this game , but am planning on purchasing it . I've heard only good things .
ICO - This game tells the story of a boy banished to a castle because he was born with horns . Soon after escaping from his tomb he was put in he meets a girl trapped in a cage and helps her along their quest to escape . Very clean animation , great water effects , and some of the best trees I've ever seen in a video game . Also , the girl , who speaks another language as ICO ( the kid with horns ) has very good AI . If you stop holding hands with her , she will wander around . She can also jump and climb ladders . I love this game .
Games to look forward to :
Final Fantasy XII - This game looks amazing , if you haven't seen the screenshots for this game yet , look around , they are jawdroppingly gorgeous . This game , unlike FFXI , is not online and follows the classic Final Fantasy singeplayer RPG drill . This game is set in the world of Ivalice , the same world as the one in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance . It's shaping up pretty nicely .
Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake-Eater : This time , Solid Snake takes to the jungle where he can hide in the foliage and eat snakes and animals to survive . Very impressive .
Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas : The next addition to the GTA series . Not much is known about this game , but due to the appeal of the last two , only the best is expected .
Nico : Sequel to ICO .
Grand Turismo 4 : The latest addition to the GT series . Like I said , I'm not a fan of racing sims , but the graphics are turning out pretty nicely .
If you had to choose between one of the 3 systems to buy , I'd say they're all pretty equal . I would base your decision on which pros and cons you care more about .
004 4 I have used this for a few years now and have enjoyed my time with it . I have bought the stand to make a vertical system and have some extras like the remote control which I highly recommend if you like to watch DVDs . As a games console the PS2 is the leader and so it has a limitless choice of games , however I will say that for some reason over the past few years there has only really been a handful of solid gaming entries and everything else is mediocre and PC graphics are a way ahead of the PS2 now , so if you are a game player looking for the best gaming experience then the PS2 is not for you . What you need is a new computer and a very good graphics card with an ADSL modem or better . PS2 games can be very expensive ( 4 top shelf games and you have the price of a PS2 - 20 top shelf games and you have the price of a computer we where just talking about . ) If you own a PS2 then a DVD store rental card is a bonus and really that rental store card is what the PS2 is about for you . If you do not have that card then I hope you have lots of money or friends to trade with .
I find myself using this box for mostly watching DVD movies and renting games . I buy a new game once every two months ( usually a top shelf game ) and that keeps me going . For the PS2 I think the type of game that suits the console best is a 3rd person survival game or something like Grand Theft Auto . Beat em ' ups are good on it as well . However the PC dominates Sims , RPGs and 1st person shooters . Maybe the PS2 has some influence on sports games like SSX and Tony Hawk but everyone knows that the better experience for these games is on the PC . So what games you prefer really has an impact on if you want a PS2 or not . Maybe a PC is really what you need ?
I watch lots of DVDs and with the remote control the PS2 plays like a joy including a special region-free disc that you can buy ( its dirt cheap ) allowing you to watch anything that comes on a DVD . I have found some incompatibility with some movies ( 2 in 300 ) but this is mostly the fault of the DVD producers and not Sony . So 99.9% of movies will play on a PS2 . That is not bad . The image quality is not the best but pretty darn good all the same . You can also hook up surround sound to the PS2 no problem and play Dolby Digital or DTS . The PS2 does have one drawback in this department though . The internal fan makes a hell of a lot of noise so you need to keep the sound up to send that to the background . It can be annoying at times . As a DVD player the PS2 has really been used to the max and I have only good things to say about that .
I have also used the PS2 to play CD music through my televisions sound system . It has made my hi-fi system now redundant . So as a console it has lots of media options other than just the games console and that is what really makes it worth its while . However as a games console I must say that I have not been let down that much ( games like GTA : Vice City , Silent Hill 3 , Manhunt , MGS , Devil May Cry , made the console for me ) but there could be a lot better first class PS2 games out there by now . I think there are less than 10 really outstanding games on the PS2 and a way more options on a PC for better games .
Anyway what you like in games is up to you . I have had the PS2 now for years and it is a workhorse that still does its job . I have no complaints about this system except maybe to hope that more developers try pushing the limits of what this box can do . I am currently looking forward to the new Resident Evil game .

010 4 I'm tired of seeing bad reviews for the PS2 without any evidence backing it up . I work with PS2s every day for a major retail chain and I know the PS2 . The earlier versions have a tendancy to have a disc read error and not read most dics , especially the blue dvd discs . Other than that , there are no problems with the machine . Also , Sony has released a minmum of 2 updated versions , that look exactly like the original , with an emphasis on UPDATE . Overall the PS2 is a solid performer with Sony hoping to get another 5 years out of it , even with the release of the PS3 ( which people need to be patient for . . May of 05 at the earliest )
I'm not going to bash the XBOX , because it is a solid performer as well . It has its problems , like being super-large and not having as large of a selection of games as Sony ( but the 100 million people that bought Halo 2 dont care ) . If I were to recommend a machine out of these two . . I can't . . its basically a tie , with the XBOX having the edge on graphics , and the PS2 having the edge with games . Hopefully this helps you out from a more mature perspective and enough with the kiddy reviews . . please ?
013 4 The Playstation 2 easily conquers all other next-gen consoles . It has DVD playback , the best game library , the easiest to use controller , and a fully realized online functionality . Lets look at the PS2 head to head with the other two consoles .
PS2 vs . Gamecube
The PS2 obliterates this system on nearly every level . The PS2 has online and CD / DVD player capabilities that the Gamecube lacks entirely . The graphics are about the same between the two with maybe a slight edge to the cube . Also the cube is slightly cheaper . The library is close but I will have to give this to PS2 . While cube has all the nintendo staples ( Mario , Zelda , Metroid , DK , SSB , etc ) , the sony system comes out on top with innovative and outstanding titles ( GTA , Metal Gear , Final Fantasy , Jak , R & C , SOCOM , etc . ) Also the PS2 outshines GC in the sheer number of titles . While the cube controller beats the XBOX in overall comfort , the dualshock 2 ' s button layout is nearly flawless and feels just right . Overall , the cube is a competent if basic system that sells because of the classic Nintendo series .
PS2 vs . XBOX
While this one is closer than the previous , the PS2 still triumphs . XBOX and PS2 have similar features : DVD / CD and online but the XBOX simultaneously one ups and one downs ( if that's a phrase ) the PS2 . The improvement lies in the ability to save directly on to the system on its HDD and more specifically burn songs onto it to use with your games . However , the monthly fee to play online is a major setback for any consumer . Onto the graphics , this is the one category PS2 falters in . The XBOX's graphics are decidedly better overall . PS2 makes a comeback in the controller department . Even with the S-controller , XBOX's controller takes a while to get used to , is overly bulky , and has a strange button layout . This just cant compete with the PS2 ' s far superior controller . It is easy to use and the perfect size . Onto the game library . This is probably the most debated part of a PS2 / XBOX comparison . While the PS2 has all the strong titles I mentioned above , the XBOX has powerful exclusives as well ( Ninja Gaiden , Chronicles of Riddick , and the almighty HALO 1 and 2 ) . In my opinion , Halo is a fantastic game yet not as amazing as people make it out to be . It is a marvelous FPS but is definitely the most overrated game in recent memory . The PS2 wins because these previous four titles and good graphics are the only reasons to buy an XBOX . If you take away these 3 the rest of the exclusives pretty much suck . All you are left with is the multiplatform games which you could get on your PS2 and have the advantage of free online and a much better controller . Overall , XBOX has pretty graphics and HALO thats it , period .
So congratulations to the Playstation 2 , the best console out there until the inevitable PS3 .
P.S . The PSP is going to wipe the floor with the DS , in my opinion .
032 4 The PS2 has incredibly good games and the biggest library of all the consoles but as my title says , it is the system itself that needs some help . The PS2 requires more patience and you've got to do more to take care of it !
What I'll start out with first are the graphics . The PS2 came out in 2000 and for then these graphics are great ! But you start to notice a few things . The first being that the graphics are incredibly blocky when compared to that of the XBOX or Gamecube . They're not as smooth . Not only that but the PS2 runs INCREDIBLY slow at times . Some games you'll see it loading for quite some time .
Second , the system isn't all its cracked up to be when taking care of it . I've already had my PS2 break on me twice ! Apparently , Sony didn't tell people that putting it in the verticle stance could move your eye and damage your mother board . Leave it in the horizontal position it's much safer that way . Also , you have to take your system in to get cleaned . . . A LOT . After a while the console will stop reading blue-disc and PSOne games . After that , your DVD player kicks out ( which also means DVD PS2 games won't be played ) and you'll need to clean the lense . I haven't had to clean out my XBOX or GCN ONCE since I got them and they're going on to being three years old ! It doesn't even take a year before I have to clean out my PS2 again .
Thrid problem , you have to go out and purchase a memory card ! This wouldn't be such a problem if they weren't so damn expensive ! All it's used for is for me to save the data of a game ! Why do I need to pay more for the memory card than I do the controller ?
This isn't really a problem but this console doesn't come with a game . I remember that when I purchased a PSX I got a demo disc showcasing its games . This doesn't include one . Not a problem but the overall cost will come out to be quite a bit when you've got to buy the console , a game , a memory card and second controller .
Also , the game only has two controller ports ! Forcing you to buy a multitap . The good news , many games only support two players so its not a total loss and you won't HAVE to buy a multitap .
Also , just because it's backwards compatible with the PSOne doesn't mean your PSOne controllers will work flawlessly . Some games will actually require that you use a Dual Shock 2 controller instead ( since the original PSX controller doesn't have Pressure sensative buttons ) . But your PS2 controller WILL work with your PSOne .
But the selection of games on the PS2 are great . Many games are worth the buy , really they are . There are also many genres to choose from . The casual RPGer will be quite at home here with his or her PS2 . So the games are great and because its been out a year longer than the other two it has a larger selection of games .
The system also has nice backward compatibility . You can play just about any PSOne game on here . What are the chances that you'll have one of the sixteen games that don't work ? And even they play on the PS2 with little to no problems .
However , the PS2 ' s cons do hold it back quite a bit . The system is flawless as far as games go , several great games out there to choose from , but the system itself isn't all that special .

+ Good selection of games
+ Hey , it's a DVD player , PSOne , CD player and PS2 all in one !
But the bad
- You'll still need to buy a Dual Shock 2 Controller since some games don't support the original Dual Shock 1 .
- Putting the system in the vertical stance means the possibility of damaging your mother board AND moving the lense exists which means you may need to get it repaired if you put in this position . DON'T put it in the vertical stance unless you have a vertical stand .
- Only two controller ports
- System needs to be cleaned often
- LONG load times
- DVD's skip from time to time . Might as well use a regular DVD player
- Memory cards aren't all that cheap
048 4 I own the XBox , GC and PS2 . Here's why I wanted all three : the XBox has a hard drive , hence all of my sports games are XBox games - b / c those games ( by far ) take up the most memory when you're saving your progress . The GC has Nintendo-only games like the Mario , Zelda , Metroid and Star Fox games . Plus , the GC has numerous series entries only available on the GC like Metal Gear Solid : Twin Snakes and Final Fantasy : Crystal Chronicles . Those facts combined with the expanded game play possibilities provided by the linking of a Game Boy Advance to the GC for specific games make the GC an immensely enjoyable system . The PS2 I got for two reasons and two reasons only : first , role-playing games ; second , the Gran Turismo series . Gran Turismo is possibly the best racing series out there and as far as RPGs go , if you're a big fan of the RPG category you need a PS2 .
those are my views and here's the basic rundown :
1 . get an XBox if you prefer sports games .
2 . get a GC if you prefer Nintendo-specific games and like the link-up possibilities provided by the GBA .
3 . get a PS2 if you dig racing games and / or RPGs more than others .

094 4 I think that the PS2 is the best console out there right now . The only problem that i've ever had with it is Disc Read Error . Now that mine does this on everything ( BRAND NEW blue discs , black discs , DVDs , and music CDs ) , I've decided to get another one . I also have an Xbox , and its good too . When games come out on both systems , I get the Xbox version . Mostly as an excuse for having the thing .
That said , the sucessful consoles through time have always been the ones with the best RPGs . Aside from Zelda , the best RPGs are made Squaresoft ( Final Fantasy , need I say more ) . They went with Sony as soon as the first Playstation came out ( well , I guess they make GBA games as well now ) . Case in point , I would not have even thought of buying an N64 if not for a long expected Zelda game . After I got it , I wished I hadn't . N64 is a more powerful system than PS1 , but there are no games that keep you playing for a long time . This same problem plagues the Xbox , though not quite to the same degree ; and it's one of the prime reasons that SEGA's console making days are over , Sonic just won't cut it forever . If not for Zelda and Pokemon , Nintendo would have been belly-up long ago ( maybe Mario could sell enough systems too , maybe ) .
The Playstation controller was designed to use the digital buttons , not the analog sticks that were added later . This does make it awkward to use the analog sticks . The Xbox ( and Gamecube ) controller was designed for use of the analog , making it more natural . However , for a good RPG ( the important games ) , there is no real need for analog ( which is probably why Sony hasn't addressed the issue yet ) .
As far as graphics go , the only valid comparison are the system exclusive games . Morrowwind vs . Final Fantasy X . . . Who cares ! They're RPGs , you're supposed to be into the gameplay . If you care about the graphics on an RPG , you shouldn't be playing it ( I still find Secret of Mana , an SNES game , to be acceptable ) . SEGA GT 2002 vs . Grand Turismo 3 . . . As even as even can be . SEGA GT has exhaust effects ( backfires are awesome ) where GT3 has track heat in replays . GT3 has more and better ( 787B and F1 ) cars than SEGA GT's flagship Fords ( auto-extending / retracting wings on the Caspita and GT90 are a nice touch , though they don't affect the handling at all ) . I guess Progect Gotham 2 should be in here as well , but it looks the same too . Xbox live , Ferrari , Saleen , and Porsche are the only good reasons for its existence , though . Sorry , but I don't play shooters ( other than Mech Assault ) ; and I have seen the lastest Zelda game for Gamecube , I was not impressed ( N64 could do that ) .
As long as a PS2 can stay dust-free , it will stand as a powerful console .

I recently got a PS2 console , i've always been a PC game freak , but i had to get the PS2 . The xbox got in my mind ( it has the best graphics when you compare them to the PS2 and GC ) but the games i get in the xbox i can get them on my PC so if you play games on your PC , DONT GET A XBOX , you'll be wasting your money . The PS2 has a lot of great games ( really cool ones ) .
Its a simple matter of what you want , and things you should know :
1 ) If you have a PC dont get a xbox ( PC graphics are better , almost every games is on the PC . )
2 ) No PC , like knew tittles , and cool ones , get a PS2 .
3 ) Buying a Game Cube if your not a kid is like buying a DAEWOO ( Korean car ) . If your 12 or lower you might like it .
4 ) From 1 to 10 ( 1 = bad 10 = good = PC Quality ) PS2 vs . xbox ( xbox graphics = 9 games = 7 tittles = 3 ) ( PS2 graphics = 8 games = 9 tittles = 8 ) .
5 ) PS2 has a slower processor than the xbox .
6 ) Every cool game is made for the PS2 . All games made by sony you wont find nowere else .
7 ) PS2 is smaller than the xbox . PS2 has more accessories .
8 ) If your a racing fan get a PS2 , if you like FPS games get a PS2 , if you like RPG get xbox or PS2 , if you like sports games get a PS2 or xbox , like kids games get a GC , like simulation games dont get any of them , if you like strategic games get a PS2 or xbox , if you like all kinds of games get a PS2 ( more tittles ) , dont know what you like get a PS2 .
I've have seen the xbox and PS2 , theres not that much of a difference in graphics ( the xbox is better somehow ) , if you really care about the graphics get a PC .
Trust me on this one , i'm 29 years old and PS2 is the best console out there for your money . Hey , if you have a lot of money to spend get a top of the line PC , you'll love it ( but you gonna have to upgrade from time to time ) that's the catch on getting one .
If your still not sure , check out the tittles that are out , and the tittles that will be release and compare them , maybe that will help you out a bit on what you want .
I you really want my advice , get a PS2 . ( you'll love it more )

105 4 The Playstation 2 Entertainment System is the best videogame console available . Sure , Xbox has those awsome graphics , but have you seen the TERRIBLY clunky controler ? And Gamecube isn't any good either , believe me , I owned one . It has a very small library of games , and the games it DOES have are mostly for little kids . The PS2 has the USB Headset , Internet Adapter , a HUGE library of games , it plays DVD's and CD's , and it's backwards-compatible ( it plays PSX games ) ! So , because of my lack of money , I bought a USED ps2 console . It was off ebay in fact , and I got it for about 80 bucks . Naturally I didn't purchase a AS IS ps2 . It is one of the older models . Yet , I've had it for almost a year now and still none of this DISC READ ERROR I keep hearing about . I suspect that the people having this problem are pirates living in awful conditions on a pirate ship , with vikings for room mates , who have trashed their consoles and for some reason blame the manufacturer . I keep good care of my swag , and as such I never had the infamous problem .
If you are in any way a non-slob , you should have no problem with the console .
Also , while the graphics may not always be as nice as the other 2 consoles ( IE games like Front Mission 4 . . yuck ) , the games are often way way way cooler / more fun ( IE Front Mission 4 . . . nice : )
Basically , it's a little trade off . Anybody who owns a PC can basically play all of the Xboxes library any how , so I didn't see much point in buying one . In fact , my PC can run any xbox game that was also released for the PC as well , at a higher resolution , and cost me a good deal less than an Xbox : O
Also , at this point , the gamecube is very very cheap to own , and while it does have some quality titles ( such as Ikaruga and the mario games ) , I believe the Playstation 2 is a better first console for those shopping around for one now .

144 4 The PS2 , I think is the best system overall of the three . All of the 3 systems are pretty good , but I think this one is the best .
Graphics / Controller 8 / 10
The X-Box has the best graphics - I played GTA : VC on both XBox and PS2 and I noticed that the graphics were way better on XBox-waaay less choppy ; like the fire on XBox was really realistic . On PS2 it looks like cardboard in a low budget movie . Gamecube graphics are the worst of three , but they're still prtetty close together . Otherwise I think the XBox controller is bulky and the buttons are confusing . . . kind of spread out everywhere ; GC is similair but I think much better than XBox ( Also GC has the BEST wireless controller ; The PS2 wireless controller by Lynx is terrible and if you're playing driving games it messes you up because it doesn't get the accelerate signal well and you go really slow ) . On PS2 the buttons are all close together and you're not forced to use the analog stick ( on both XBox and GC the D-Pad is almost out of reach ) .
Games 9 / 10
PS2 has the best games . It has the best sports games and all of the other games are great too . Also don't forget the other thousands of games you can play from PS1 . . . this is especially great for the Final Fantasy Series . GC lacks in games . . . they obsess over Mario games , which are fun , but should really be making more than that . XBox has a few good games . . . they also have good ones PS2 don't and visa versa . . . that's why it's a 9 .
Memory Cards 7 / 10
I'm not a big fan for this sytem . But it does allow you to let your friend borrow your memory card or copy from it ( in case they're too lazy to beat a game and wanna cut to the chase ) . It's not bad . . . but does get expensive . . . memory cards are 20 bucks . Kind of good . . . kind of bad in this area .
Online Feature 6 / 10
Not the greatest but it was still fun while I had it . . . ( I cancel AOL and never bothered to reget it ) . Most games have the feature and it's pretty cool . . . gets boring and if you don't have DSL . . . then it kind of sucks cause it freezes and / or goes slow . XBox Live is great and GC doesn't even have this feature . But does have great multiplayer . There is no need to get a controller port . . . there's 4 right there .
Overall 8 / 10
A great system with very few flaws . If you are considering buying either XBox , PS2 or Gamecube . GO PS2 . It is a great system .
149 4 This is a quality system . I have all 3 next-gen consoles and I find them to be very equal . They all have their pros and cons . Here are the pros and cons for the playstation 2 followed by a list of quality titles with brief descriptions :

CONS :
- You have to pay extra for a headset in online multiplayer games
- No subscription in online games means you have to put up with other players ' lag , and deal with more little kids

Games to purchase for PS2 :
Grand Theft Auto III : A revolutionary action game which tells the story of some guy who got screwed in a bank robbery and ended up in jail , but he gets out and makes a name for himself in Liberty City as a criminal / driver . Very open ended gameplay , great story , great voice acting , great game . Some of the best car physics in any game .
Grand Theft Auto Vice City : Dubbed as one of the gorriest and most violent games ever , this game has earned its M rating . Set in the 80 ' s , the player takes the role of Tommy Vercetti , the king of a Miami Vice inspired city ( it's set in the 80 ' s ) when a drug deal goes wrong . You can fly helicopters , drive cars , drive motorcycles . It's pretty fun .
Metal Gear Solid 2 : Sons of Liberty . A very good stealth game based on the Metal Gear franchise . This game has a very clean interface and contains many new gameplay elements for stealth games . The AI is pretty good up until they shoot you , where you can take almost a whole clip from an enemy and still live , then eat a ration to gain back your health instantly . Still great , still fun .
Gran Turismo 3 : A-spec : I'm not big on racing sims because I know nothing about cars , but if your into that sort of game , this is THE racing sim to buy . Great graphics .
Final Fantasy X - An amazing RPG game from Squaresoft based on the Final Fantasy series . Probably the second best Final Fantasy game next to VII . I heard Final Fantasy VI ( or III in the U.S . ) was very good also , and I have it , but i never got a chance to play it . I like the characters a lot in this game . It's only downfall is in the voice acting of the 2 main characters . But otherwise , it's a pretty good game
Final Fantasy XI - Deviating from the classic singleplayer RPG experience Final Fantasy is known for , Squaresoft decided to make an MMORPG ( Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game ) . I don't have this game but I've seen demos and heard good things about it . Unfortunately , like most other MMORPGs , you have to pay a subscription fee to play it .
SSX 3 : Next to 1080 , one of the top snowboarding games out there .
Devil May Cry : Though he was a demon , the legendary swordsman awoke one day to justice . Alone , he defeated the demon army and imprisoned their emperor , Mundus , saving the human world from damnation . Sounds pretty cool right ? It is . Very fun action game that melds swordmanship and guns .
Ratchet and Clank : Going Commando : A very fun platforming / action game that , unlike most platforming games , has weapons . This game is the sequel to the original Ratchet Clank . I have not yet played this game , but am planning on purchasing it . I've heard only good things .
ICO - This game tells the story of a boy banished to a castle because he was born with horns . Soon after escaping from his tomb he was put in he meets a girl trapped in a cage and helps her along their quest to escape . Very clean animation , great water effects , and some of the best trees I've ever seen in a video game . Also , the girl , who speaks another language as ICO ( the kid with horns ) has very good AI . If you stop holding hands with her , she will wander around . She can also jump and climb ladders . I love this game .
Games to look forward to :
Final Fantasy XII - This game looks amazing , if you haven't seen the screenshots for this game yet , look around , they are jawdroppingly gorgeous . This game , unlike FFXI , is not online and follows the classic Final Fantasy singeplayer RPG drill . This game is set in the world of Ivalice , the same world as the one in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance . It's shaping up pretty nicely .
Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake-Eater : This time , Solid Snake takes to the jungle where he can hide in the foliage and eat snakes and animals to survive . Very impressive .
Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas : The next addition to the GTA series . Not much is known about this game , but due to the appeal of the last two , only the best is expected .
Nico : Sequel to ICO .
Grand Turismo 4 : The latest addition to the GT series . Like I said , I'm not a fan of racing sims , but the graphics are turning out pretty nicely .
If you had to choose between one of the 3 systems to buy , I'd say they're all pretty equal . I would base your decision on which pros and cons you care more about .

The PS2 is by far the best-selling system in the nation . It has sold over 180 million systems world . Wow , thats a lot .
The system design is ' intresting ' , it's got that lump on the side which I think is pretty stupid , I like the slim design better . I've seen abuse on the system before , but the worst I've seen is using the disk drive as a drink holder , please don't do that .
The controller isn't really comfortable for your paws , it looks kinda like the PS1 except the coler is differnt . The online setup really dosen't have much going for it , but it is better than Nintendo's off-line support .
The game selection couldn't be better . Biggest selection of the consoles , mostly first party games , with a dash of multi-platform games . It's probably most know for giving a home to the arcade-famous dance-dance pad , or for the Grand Theft Auto series . Most of the games are teen ratings or mature ratings , so infants beware !
I thourghly think you will enjoy this system . Here are some games I'd recomend : GTA San Andreas , God of War , Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater , Ratchet & Clank series , Jak series , and last of all Sly Cooper series .

040 4 For my entire life i have been playing games and nevr been strictly nintendo or sony or any company . I have all three of the new systems ( PS2 , Gamecube , and XBOX ) and i believe that the PS2 has many advantages , it also has many disadvantages . The PS2 has the most games , but none of them compare to Halo , Ninja Gaiden , or Star Wars : KOTR . Also , the PS2 has been out for a year or more longer than the xbox or gamecube . The PS2 does not have anything close to the xbox in terms of graphics . To even match what the xbox has , you would need to spend 100s of dollars more . Still , the PS2 still has some amazing games now , and coming soon . ( PS2 exclusives as of 4 - 30 - 04 ) :

Just keep your system in a dust-free area , and treat it with care and you should never have to deal with this problem in the first place . The Gamecube is also a great system for multiplayer action . It has the single best offline multiplayer ; Super smash bros . melee . Hours of hectic crazy fun in a single game . Of course , gamecube is also hard to recommend because of its lack of online capabilities . PS2 is also the only system with backwards compatability , meaning that you can play your PS1 games on PS2 . In conclusion , if you dont already have the greatest console in America , now's the best time to have one .

068 4 This was a wonderful choice for me . I'm not into all the high tech game systems or games . It was also difficult finding one at a reasonable price without just having to break down and buy a new system . It was shipped to me in perfect condition . I could find no flaws any where . I really appreciate the fact that I can stand this system up which makes it perfect for my entertainment system . The smaller one would've been okay but I don't think it would've been the same . Any future products being sold by Mr . Eastland that would be useful to me , I would definetely buy first if I could get that chance . Just a suggestion to anyone else who may read this review , buy your products from Mr . Eastland , you will not be disappointed .
083 4 Out of the the current consoles , I think the Playstation 2 falls right at the end . It's not a bad console , mind you , I've had a lot of fun playing on it , but I think that the Gamecube and Xbox might be more worthwhile in the end .
The PS2 does have the largest selection of games , but their load times are a pain in the ass . The controller is a decent design and easy to use . The DVD feature works well , but we haven't used it since we got a DVD player . I also like the fact that the PS2 can be set vertically or horizontally . . . meaning you can put it pretty much anywhere you want it . . . which is somewhat harder to do with an Xbox .
One of the biggest problems with this system is the disc door . Less than six months after we got the system , the disc door broke . We got it fixed , but it's acting like it's about to break again now . Another problem with the console is the fact that the graphics are disappointing when compared to the Gamecube and Xbox . And , like I said , the PS2 has the largest library of games out of the three current consoles . . . but let's be honest , how many of PS2 - only titles really catch your eye ?
The PS2 is a good system , but the fact that most of the PS2 exclusive titles are uninteresting and any other game that have been released on the Gamecube or Xbox will have graphics that are better than the PS2 ' s version doesn't leave much reason to get one .

If you're into RPGs like the ever-so-popular Final Fantasy series , then go for the PS2 . 095 4 Firstly , the PS2 is very slow loading games . The graphics aren't necessarily wonderful , but they'll do . When the PS2 was first released , everyone wanted one , but the novelty soon wore off , & I see why . It's quite bulky and I hate the controller . The only reason I bought one was b / c the games were cheaper than the ones for the Gamecube , & it functioned as a DVD player . However , the DVD function is quite good , except that fast forwarding takes all day . I don't understand why there are only two controller slots , either . I'm seriously considering trading in my PlayStation 2 for a Nintendo Gamecube . I've been a Nintendo buff my whole life ( except for my Sega ) .
109 4 I've had my original PS2 since 2002 and never had any problems with it . Which is more then what I can say about my first PS3 . I bought a 40gig model January 2008 and by December that same year , it stopped reading blu-ray discs and games . I didn't bother getting an extended warranty because I figured it would work forever like my trusty PS2 . But boy was I was wrong . Consoles just arn't as reliable as they use to be , I guess . I ended up getting an 80gig model February 2009 and so far I haven't had any problems with this one . * crosses fingers *
So yeah , after all these years I still love my trusty PS2 . Even with all the time I put into Killzone 2 and InFamous , I still find time to load up God of War II or Jak 3 every now and then . And after I'm done playing every game on the system , I'll still use it as a dvd player until the day it dies .
113 4 I've seen the awesome graphics and experienced the gameplay of the PS3 , so I know that the PS2 isn't the greatest thing in the world . BUT I still love it ! I would definitely recommend this to those , like myself , who can't afford a PS3 yet .

You can't say that ! PS2 isn't boring already ( it never was ) , and with these promising upcoming games this good machine will be even better : Tekken 5 , God of War , Shadow of Rome , Nina , Killzone , Devil May Cry 3 etc . If all those games were going to be released on Xbox , i wouldn't care about PS2 , but they won't , so do yourself a favor , go buy and PS2 and Xbox .

I have owned the original Playstation 2 for about four years now and I am fairly satisfied with it . The Playstation 2 has an incredible selection of games . It doesn't matter what genre you prefer or what your age is , you will find several games that fit your preference . There are also several great games that are exclusive for the Playstation , such as the Gran Turismo , Final Fantasy , Kingdom Hears , and many more . Another advantage of the Playstation 2 is that you can play DVD's on it and you can play original Playstation games on it . However , despite all of these nice features , there are some negative factors that take away from the gaming experience on this console . Occasionally when you try to play a game or watch a DVD , you put the disc in the system and sit and wait , and wait , and WAIT . You will eventually get the message on the browser , DISC READ ERROR . This happens for some Playstation 2 games and SEVERAL DVD's . I have put some brand new DVD's into the unit and got the DISC READ ERROR message . I think that if Sony is going to put the DVD feature on the system , they should at least make it work right . Another disadvantage is that the Playstation 2 has a hard time reading discs that are scratched . The tiniest little scratch will cause it to either display the DISC READ ERROR message or it will freeze up when you get into the game . Another disadvantage of the system is the horrible loading times on some games . Sometimes , it can get unbearable to sit and wait for several minutes to play a game . Also , the graphics for this system cannot even compare to that of the Gamecube or X Box . The Nintendo Gamecube has several advantages over this system . There are pretty much NO LOADING TIMES and it will read a disc that has been scratched to pieces . So , overall , the Playstation 2 is a good system when it comes to the selection of games and the gameplay of the games . But , the hardware of the playstation 2 leaves a lot to be desired . second the xbox . this is the most powerful HARDWARE . not the software . xbox has the capability to produce amazing graphics but the games are good but not perfect . the library is huge and most run on both this and ps2 . the controller is clunky and the s version is better but still the worst . still good though . the pick over ps2 will all depend on games that are exclusive . the over hyped halo was great on the multiplayer side but the single player was horrible . i say buy the game buy online and skip the single player . 8.0 / 10
last the ps2 . soo sooo many games you woudn't belive . there is really something for everyone . the hardware is the worst but still can produce some impressive graphics . the controller is good but average . imo has the best buttons . the two analogs sticks work great for fp shooters . the hardware is limited and easy to break . but in all is great and everyone should pick up as second console if not first.if you like xbox you have to still have a ps2 on top of it .8.5 / 10

101 4 The Microsoft corporation has had a history of releasing flawed products ( most Windows OS ) and then releasing updated versions at ridiculous prices . However , the XBOX seems to be an extremely well made system . The Playstation , on the other hand , is not . While the games and the graphics are not far below those of the XBOX , the durability of the system is terrible . I've had mine for a little over a year , and it has become so much of a hassle trying to get it work that I hardly play it anymore . I have several friends who all experience the DISC READ ERROR problem , and I'm sure just about anyone who owns an original PS2 probably does too . While I realize that Sony apparently fixed this problem on the updated models , who honestly wants to shell out another $150 for a game system they already payed $150 for ? I have an original 8 - bit Nintendo system that took some damage when I was in grade school , but it still works , as well as the Super Nintendo I've had for over 10 years . And I took excellent care of the PS2 . The bottom line here is if Sony put out a faulty product , they should have some kind of obligation to fix it rather than make people pay twice . I promptly replaced my broken , piece of crap PS2 , but with an XBOX instead . And I've been encouraging others to do the same .

Its only got two controller ports , but if your mad about that get a multitap to get more controllers , but seriously who really has more than two controllers and has a huge T.V . to play 4 player games anyway ( and has 4 people in the family who takes games seriously anyway ) . Also some other people could be dissapionted with the absence of a hard drive in the original package , but I like the idea of the memory card , portable and i'd hate the fact of leaving my hard drive at my friend's house . That's why you can get 2 memory cards . The games are great and you don't need a extra thing to play dvd's . Sure XboX has HALO the god of all online shooters , but what if you can't get online , ps2 still has a line of hard hitting games that you don't need online to get into it . Ps2 has God of War , Gt4 , GTA , and the three popular cartoony feeling games , Sly , Ratchet and Clank , and Jak & Daxter . 036 4 Previous models of the ps2 have had numerous problems employed with disc reading integrity . Models in the past have had such problems as laser intensity failures , disc balance problems resulting in scratching , and other serious failures . These problems and further improvements have been addressed in the new 50001 series Ps2 model .
To Start off I will explain the new features and the rating of each stated feature :
Built in IR port : A built in IR remote sensor has been implemented between the power and reset switches . A special remote is required to use this feature as the old model will not function ( according to the provided documentation ) the new model number as SCPH - 10420 . I have not seen one of the new remotes in local Arizona retail establishments , yet I have seen online retailers selling this model . The new remote contains more functions then the last model , the new functions include tray eject and power / reset . Like stated previously I have not used the new remote function , yet they do seem rather interesting .
Enhanced DVD playback : The 50001 series Ps2 includes advanced DVD read and playback capability . Equipped with a new laser the 50001 has the ability to read video DVD from DVD-r / rw and + r / rw format . I have tested simple playback from a DVD-RW disc without problems . The other included DVD enhancement lies with the actual decoder function , progressive scan output for DVD playback . The video quality in DVD mode of the progressive type is equivalent to an entry level DVD player , yet is much better than the older generation of Ps2 units . Smooth DVD playback is also to be expected , again early models had problems with fluid decoding of some DVD video . Overall the improvements are a welcomed addition .
The last feature that is boasted by Sony is reduced fan noise . Testing an old generation console with the 50001 and a decibel meter , a drop of 30% system fan noise was detected .
Qualities in relation to the DVD drive unit have greatly improved also . Load times and multi layer DVD discs ( such as Xenosaga ) have loaded much more smoothly . The laser focusing mechanism has given the unit a better ability to read user defects in media ( such as scratches ) . As for disc balance , the drive seems perfect . No excess drive noise or instability have been detected while operating this unit in the horizontal position . All tested DVD and CD verity discs have had no problem during load . The improvement in laser and optic improvement have also led to slightly faster load times on the DVD wavelength . Disc tray gearing has also been improved for a smoother eject cycle of the tray .
In all the new 50001 series Ps2 is a welcomed change in quality and feature aspects . If you are purchasing a new Ps2 or replacing an old one , this is the time to go through with it . Make sure to look for the + in the lower right hand corner of the retail packaging for the model 50001 .

042 4 gamecube , ps2 , and xbox are all great systems and they all have their good points and their bad . ps2 has the most games but lacks in power . gamecube has only medium power and only medium amount of games . and xbox has not as many games but is a power house .
i have all 3 but i like xbox the best because it has the best online comuninity and capability , it has great graphics ( look at halo 2 ) , and the 400 + games it does have are mostly good ones ( halo , halo2 , rainbow six 3 , star wars KOTOR , fable , unreal championship 1 and 2 , burnout 1 , 2 , and 3 , chronicles of ridick , ninja gaiden , ghost recon , and splinter cell , just to name a few .
plus most good games like mortal kombat deception or need for speed underground come out for both the xbox and the other systems and there are a ton of great xbox exclusives . dont get me wrong ps2 and gamecube have great games too but xbox realy is the complete package , it has great games , its powerful , best controller design , and fantastic online play . and that is why xbox in my opinion is the best of the 3 , plus if your like me and love tom clancy and first person shooter games then your gonna find the bes on xbox . so go buy an xbox .

Second of all , everybody that says that the playstation is not durable enough then you have a minor point . But come on now , if you cant uscrew some screws and turn a little knob inside to fix it ( yes this is how you fix disc read errors ) then are you even competent enough to play games .
As far as the extra costs go , memory cards and multitap cost less combined then a single new game and if were already on this subject then what about xbox live . Look it how much it costs to play . You have to own the game ( a given of course ) , pay monthly fee for the game you wanna play , buy Xbox live , and pay another monthly fee for that . So if you happen too complain about ps2 ' s cost then hey Xbox isnt that cheap either .
And now that youve seen a little of my bias ill give you some of the facts . Buy the system that you want based on the games and genres you like ( not just for one or two franchise games , jeez halo freaks ) :
- - Ps2 - - Good for platformers , sports , rpgs , racing games , and fighting games . Broadest selection . More of the mature gamer . Featured games : Metal Gear Solid Series , Ratchet and Clank Series , Tekken Series , Jak and Daxter Series , Gran Turismo Series , Grand theft auto series , Final fantasy , Madden etc .

I bought my PS2 probably about five years ago and I think it's a pretty good system.I know the PS2 has its problems like the graphics are worse than the first Xbox and Gamecube , but the system has a lot of great games.The Xbox quit early because a lot of companies went straight to Sony and Gamecube never really had that many games they did not want any violent games and focus on Gameboy advance and DS .
The best thing about the Playstation 2 is that it has very type of game that is popular like Final Fantasy 10 , Time Crisis 2& 3 , Grand Theft Auto San Andreas , Devil May Cry 1,2 , & 3 , Midnight Club 3 , and many other games.I prefer a PS2 over PS3 any day because the point of PS2 is the huge library of games and PS3 doesn't have any games that I want to get . I own every brand console Dreamcast , N64 , PS2 , Snes , Psone , and Xbox 360 so I am not biased I just like great games that are made well , part of the problem is that the companies take longer to make because they could go out of business if they don't sell enough games so they only release something that will sell something like Halo 3 or Final Fantasy .
Well , I bought an extra Playstation 2 at a used store for $20 , if it didn't work I could always use it for parts.The issue with the system is that it had disc read error this is so annoying , but my brother and I just took it apart and fixed it , now it reads most of the games.Another problem is that the graphics are dated and some games look bad . Besides the problems it's a nice system if you want awesome variety of great games than pick up a PS2 .

Sony , made the PS2 in 2000 . Now in the year 2007 , you must buy it . The game selection is bigger then any other console ( over 1400 , maybe even 2400 ) , and at 130 bucks , it's a nice price . Old PS2 ' s had an expansion pack for online adapters and hardrives , altthough the new , slim as hell versions have a network slot built in , but no hardrive slot . PS2 plays PS2and PS1 games , and lets you watch most dvd's . The PS2 , and it ; s games , arent good for online play though . It came out a year earlier then the XbOX and Gamecube , so it wasnt made for online play . The graphics , depend on the game . If you care about minor graphic details , then get a XBOX or Gamecube . The PS2 uses DVD-ROm type disks for games . Gamecube uses a smaller , in size and capacity disk . Online play is ok . U can connect keyboards and headsets for some games , to talk with your oponents . Games on this console are staggering in numbers . Wanting every great game the PS2 has to offer is like wanting a different game every day for next few years . A few are the Need for Speed series , and the Burnout series , and , everyone's favorite , the GRAND THEFT AUTO series . My old PS2 is over 2.5 years old now , and it still runs great . The only bad part is the peripherals . I dont know why , but my PS2 controller doesnt work , and my TV cable is ripped on the video wire . Although i have a friend with a PS2 who never had these problems , im not sure where they're coming from . The PS2 controller is the same as PS1 ( with analog sticks ) , except the analogs sticks are used with the directional pad for the games . There are available component and s-video cables for the PS2 , so you can get better graphics on your games . It can stand horizontally , and vertically ( with a stand sold seperatly ) . XBOX is to big and bulky . Gamecube has bad games . PS2 is the king . For game saves , you need a seperate memory card , but now that the PS3 is out , they're cheap as hell . The games are cheap . The games are fun . The console is reliable . Get it now .
And you can play your CD's on it , and hook it up to a 5.1 surround sound system witha seperate cable .
018 4 It was pretty hard for me to decide which gaming console I'd prefer to have ( xbox , ps2 or gamecube ) . Just for the record I think I'd choose xbox . I dont care much for the graphics they all look good enough in all 3 systems , I'd choose xbox mostly because of the games it has to offer , and the controllers are most suitable for me . The graphics do seem to be better but again its not a BIG difference and so not a huge deal to me anyway . Its also a plus that you dont have to buy memory cards or multitabs . What I don't like about the Xbox is its size , its pretty darn big .
Gamecube's nice too , though it can't play dvds . The controllers work well but they're not comfortable to me . I can't really tell the difference in terms of graphics between the gamecube and xbox , in any case the graphics are fine . Its got some pretty good games but there are not many that appeal to me so thats the main reason why I wouldn't choose it .
However I think PS2 offers a wide variety of games , so its flexible for people with different interests . The controller's aren't bad , except I think its harder to reach the left joystick , and doesn't seem to be as sensitive as the other 2 console's controllers . Unimportantly I think the PS2 looks the coolest too . I recommend the PS2 for people searching for variety .

Somewhere around here , in a box , are many old game consoles . An Odyssey2 , an Atari 2600 , a Commodore 64 ( please , it was a game machine ) , and even an NES ( no excuse ; I succumbed to the kid's whining ) . I've played friends ' Pong , Colecovision , Adam , Sega , and on and on . Too many times , I've dropped too much coin on a game system only to watch its popularity peter out .
Well , I have one word for you that puts the Playstation2 in the Highly Recommended realm : Backward-compatibility . Sony shows faults in many areas , but they sure got it right in this respect . If you can't wait for the Playstation3 ( B0009VXAM0 ; reportedly also backward compatible ) , your game investment in the PS2 won't be wasted .

092 4 All of a sudden , over the course of the last year or so , it's become fashionable to trash the PS2 . Sony is partly to blame here , for not coming out with the successor sooner . ( Where's the next version , Sony ? ) And the PS2 cannot match either the Xbox or the Gamecube in terms of processing prowess .
But alas , we buy game consoles not to look at the best computer-generated breasts or aliens , but to have fun , to escape our otherwise totally boring and unworthy life . And in this PS2 shines , because it boasts a huge library of titles that cover every genre of video gaming . . and some you'd never thought existed . Compared to the Xbox , the PS2 also exhibits very good reliability : whereas my Xbox went dead after a little over a year , my PS2 is still working fine after almost 3 years . PS2 games are also cheaper than for the other consoles .
If you are new to gaming , the PS2 is the best place to start because , like Windows PCs , you have so many choices when it comes to software and also accessories .

The game selection is bigger then any other console ( over 1400 , maybe even 2400 ) , and at 130 bucks , it's a nice price . Old PS2 ' s had an expansion pack for online adapters and hardrives , altthough the new , slim as hell versions have a network slot built in , but no hardrive slot . PS2 plays PS2and PS1 games , and lets you watch most dvd's . The PS2 , and it ; s games , arent good for online play though . It came out a year earlier then the XbOX and Gamecube , so it wasnt made for online play . The graphics , depend on the game . If you care about minor graphic details , then get a XBOX or Gamecube . The PS2 uses DVD-ROm type disks for games . Gamecube uses a smaller , in size and capacity disk . Online play is ok . U can connect keyboards and headsets for some games , to talk with your oponents . Games on this console are staggering in numbers . Wanting every great game the PS2 has to offer is like wanting a different game every day for next few years . A few are the Need for Speed series , and the Burnout series , and , everyone's favorite , the GRAND THEFT AUTO series . My old PS2 is over 2.5 years old now , and it still runs great . The only bad part is the peripherals . I dont know why , but my PS2 controller doesnt work , and my TV cable is ripped on the video wire . Although i have a friend with a PS2 who never had these problems , im not sure where they're coming from . The PS2 controller is the same as PS1 ( with analog sticks ) , except the analogs sticks are used with the directional pad for the games . There are available component and s-video cables for the PS2 , so you can get better graphics on your games . It can stand horizontally , and vertically ( with a stand sold seperatly ) . XBOX is to big and bulky . Gamecube has bad games . PS2 is the king . For game saves , you need a seperate memory card , but now that the PS3 is out , they're cheap as hell . The games are cheap . The games are fun . The console is reliable . Get it now .
And you can play your CD's on it , and hook it up to a 5.1 surround sound system witha seperate cable .
125 4 I bought the PS2 for my daughter for Christmas and she loves it ! She's been playing it for the last three days ! I still see her occationally , when she comes out of her room to eat , get something to drink , or when her fingers are just tired !

189 4 a few people have mentioned the better service record of the PS2 over XBOX and Gamecube . My PS2 does not fit with this at all . About 3 months after I bought it ( and just out of warranty ) it started making buzzing noises , and freezing up at random , usually deep into a game . This week it finally died , and won't even boot up now . Just a warning . People tell me that keeping it on the floor is really bad news , and keep that fan clean .
I agree completely that PS2 is the best . Best controller is not a small thing . Those Nintendo controllers are awful , try and use more than a couple of buttons and you're stuck . Once you've been playing for a few hours you can get hand cramps and all sorts if the controller isn't right . PS2 controllers seem pretty durable . I've had mine for about 3 years , and my friend's XBOX controllers lasted only 6 months .
The huge selection of games ( just walk into your local Blockbuster for proof ) makes up for the lack of graphics power in my opinion , and while some of the older titles look pretty bad , this year's stuff seems a lot better .
Here are My Overall Complaints : mine broke quickly . Memory cards can no longer hold more than three or four games , and even less if you have multiple save games . At C $35 a pop , that's a big thing . And now the system's finally affordable , it's only because the next round of consoles is on the horizon .
205 4 Very disapointed with the PS2 , disc read error after only a short time of play . Now none of the games work on it . After doing some research , I noticed that this must be a common problem because there are so many people selling cd-rom's for disc read error and other malfunctions associated with the PS2 .
I would consider investing in another game system if I did not have to buy all new games to go with it .

A lot of people will tell you that the PS2 only has problems if you stand it upright ( which Sony says is perfectly fine and even sells a stand for ) . That would be inconsistent with my experience because mine still malfunctioned and it was sitting horizontally . I even have a horizontal stand which is supposed to increse airflow ( the horizontal stand made by Sony ) . Also , the friend I mentioned who is on her third PS2 console has never stood her's upright .

If you plan on playing Final Fantasy XI get the current design before it is gone . So far the redesigned PS2 doesn't support the HDD Hard Drive necessary to play FFXI and Sony hasn't expressed any plans for that . So , the question becomes do you want the classic design or the updated version that hits in Nov . Me ? I can't really wait until Nov . because MK Deception comes out in a few weeks hehehehe .
A word about accessories . As I mentioned before I have a horizontal stand for my PS2 . The horizontal stand is supposed to increse airflow . Supposedly , this does good things for the system . The stand is worthless . It doesn't really connect to the system , the system just sits on top of it . It's kinda cool looking . . . other than that you should be aware that neither the horizontal or vertical stands are necessary because the system is designed so that it can stand or sit without a stand . The vertical stand adds a little extra balance but I recommend you never put your system on carpet or an uneven surface . The carpet causes static issues and , like uneven surfaces , can result in the system falling if shaken too hard ( take note parents of energetic kids ) . The PS2 already has quality issues , don't give it any additional trauma to help the process along .
Third party controllers ( Controllers made by a company other than Sony ) just aren't as good as factory controllers . Plain and simple . They all have cool little features and they are getting better , but stick to the controllers made by Sony and avoid the headache of unresponsive controls . This is , of course , unless you absolutely need a wireless controller so people aren't tripping when they walk by , or if your hands ( or your little gamer's hands ) are too small for a standard controller , there are mini controllers available .
As far as online game play goes , the PS2 leads the pack for play features while the Xbox leads the pack for . . . instant messaging and lan party-esque mass multi-player gaming . Sometimes the Xbox is a little more like a computer that I approve of . NOTE - if you want to play online you need to make sure the PS2 you are buying comes with the online adapter ( or if you wait till Nov . for the redesign it will be intergrated ) . If you don't have highspeed internet , don't worry ! According to Sony 40% of it's online market is tapping online gaming with dial-up . Dial-up is an option if you have an online adapter .

009 4 Hello , I am a big computer geek , so you can trust what I have to say . ; )
PS2 rocks , I've had it since the first day it came out . It has awesome games and good graphics ( when needed ) . If your thinking about buying a PS2 , Gamcube , or Xbox , read this first .
1 . Don't get Gamecube , every good game it has is on PS2 and / or Xbox .
2 . Xbox has a lot of good games that are also on PS2 and some good games of its own , Knights of the Old Republic , but PS2 is lasts longer because its not on the crappy Windows system ( some people disagree but its true if you take care of your PS2 )
3 . PS2 has a HUGE variety of games , is the best selling game system and has Final Fantasy .
I hope you make the right choice ( PS2 or Xbox ) .
If you do buy a PS2 remember these key instructions for care taking .
1 . NEVER EVER shut your PS2 off with the switch in the back ( it is only for frozen games ) instead press down the reset button until the light goes red .
2 . Don't EVER put you PS2 on a vertical stand . It screws up the hard-drive and the game in it .
3 . Don't throw things at your PS2 .
4 . If the disc isn't reading don't throw your PS2 away , there could be a scratch on the game ( I suggest buying a disk cleaner for those scratches [ SkipDoctor is the best ] ) .
Have fun with your PS2 , I've been through a lot with mine and it is still in fine working condition ( dropped it one story once ) and if anyone tells you I am wrong , I'm not , just remember I am a computer geek .

As everyone knows the xbox has the best graphics.HOWEVER the ps2 and gamecube graphics are also good.And besides as long as the graphics are good and understandable one CAN play the game .
VARIETY OF GAMES
Everyone knows that the ps2 selection of games is the best and broadest as it has over 10,000 games.Most are rated teen or mature but most teen games CAN be played by 10 year olds.The xbox and gamecube selection while having more exclusive games have much less number of games.And in my opiniun games make the system .
PRICE
All 3 system's have the price of 150 $ .
HOWEVER after getting the ps2 you HAVE to get a memory card [ 20 $ ] , 1 extra controller [ around 10 $ - 20 $ ] and a network adapter [ 20 $ ] so comes to 200 - 210 $ .
In the xbox you have to get 1 controller [ 20 $ ] , xbox live [ no idea but should be around 20 - 30 $ ] , monthly charge of live , monthly charge of game internet , dvd unit [ should cost around 30 - 40 $ ] so comes around 250 $ .
Well I really don't know much about the gamecube but it is the cheapest of the lot and should cost around 160 - 170 $ .
OVERALL
You should get a xbox if you are like 16 and graphics make a hell lot of a difference , gamecube if you are 8 and want a system without any REAL strong or weak points , ps2 if games make the system for you and your age is 10 - 15 and like all genres .

We bought this system less than a year ago . After about 3 months it stopped playing the games . We had it repaired , luckily it was still cvered by the warranty . Now , about 6 months later it is doing the exact same thing . Now it's nothing more than a $200 ( what we paid for it ) papaer weight . I am extremely disappointed ! ! I will be replacing this system with something else . My family did not get our moneys worth from this product .
064 4 My first video game console was a Sega Genesis , so it was so strange to try even a Nintendo or Sony product as I got older . I was glued and attached to my Sony Playstation 2 when I got it in late 2003 . To this present day , I still have it amazingly . The bulky model that sits instead of stands still plays on . I read about gamers that have to do that or can't get DVDs to play or some dilemma that lessens their experiences . I have been very lucky to not encounter any of these situations . My regular , bulky PS1 was not so lucky and had to be replaced as disk read errors reoccurred way too much . After 3 years , the only issue I have is waiting a couple extra seconds for the browser window to show up and read the PS2 disk . However , this has been happening for several months and it stills reads PS1 disks and DVDs perfectly .
Playstation 2 may not have universal games ( e.g . Mario , Halo ) , but it has an exclusive video game lineup that goes on and on . The graphics never cease to amaze me even when I switch to the newer video game systems . The controllers are very user-friendly . I don't find myself wanting to get wireless controllers , and the analog sticks so beat D-Pads . The advancements made with the Sony Playstation 2 are ground-breaking compared to when I first started playing video games . I am not much into PC / computer games , but the online capabilities via the PS2 would make me want to try !

I've never had a problem with my PS2 because I don't keep it lying around in areas it shouldn't be in , like most people do with theirs . Thats why your PS2 ' s keep breaking because you people can't take of it properly . Clean it up every now and then and keep it somwhere where it's not going to get beat up on .
I still have my first one that I bought and it's in excellent condition . I haven't had problems with at all since I've had it because I know how to take care of it unlike most people .

The controller is in my opinion the best controller of the last gen game consoles . You have to buy a memory card to save your games which is good if you have friends that play the games you do . You can just bring your memory card with you when you travel . Also , if you insert the memory card before you put a game in you can look through your card to see what games you have saved on it . This is good if you want to delete a game or make a copy of another . It also shows you the date and time you made the save . I though it was neat to see when I saved the games I saved on it .
The system plays very quietly and lasts a long time . I have had mine since like 98 and it still plays great . If you looking for a big game list , your in luck . If you look playstation 2 games up on amazon you will see more than 1000 ! They have games that more than likely everyone will enjoy . Now you can go online with the system . However I'm not sure how many games actually have online portions in the ps2 . It was to late for ps2 fans to care . Also , you could have a hard drive for the system for games like Final Fantasy 11 . I only have one because I beta tested the game and got mine free . I don't know if more than 5 games even use the hard drive . You don't need to have games to use it though . You can store all your ps2 game saves from your memory card to the hard drive . I have SO many saves on it . So that is one cool thing you can do . I am pretty sure the new ps2s don't even have space for the hard drive . So if you did want one you would need to get the older version .
They are still putting out games for the system . Some would say the graphics do not meat up to the new systems but I say so what ? I have a 360 as well as a Wii and I think the graphics look great . What it all comes down to is this , if your looking for a well know , long lasting video game system with a huge library that will keep you entertained for a long long time , then the ps2 is the system you should get .
001 4 First off let me start by saying , this is NOT going to be a PS2 bashing . Though we all have our opinions on the three systems , the fact is that they are all great systems in their own right . That is to say you won't go wrong no matter which one you choose .
Let me reiterate , this is not a bad system . It has several great games ( Final Fantasy X X2 , Grand Theft Auto , WWE Smackdown Series and several others ) . Though it must be noted that Gamecube and XBox both have great exclusive titles . The graphics are outstanding and they may not even be the best of the three , but they are great , certainly better than anything we had just a few short years ago . They definitely have more benefits than everybody else ( free online gaming , the Eyetoy , and more games . As far as controllers go , I like Gamecube's a bit better , but this controller works wonderfully well too and is well laid out . ( You won't be searching for the buttons like you do on XBox controllers , that is my one true complaint with that system ) Anyway Playstation 2 ' s biggest downfall is in the fragility of the system itself and though I have experienced no problems personally , I have heard of a few from close friends .
1 . Disc Reading Error ( You've seen this many times , I will comment no further . )
2 . Malfunctioning Disc Door ( It just stops opening when the button is pressed . You then have to pull it out and push it in manually which can cause it ultimately to break . )
3 . The power cords tend to wear out faster than average . ( Not a big deal , the cords are fairly cheap , but it could present a fire hazard . )
None of these things would be a huge deal except that the PS2 comes with a measly 90 day warranty ( Do I hear 1 year anyone ? )
I'm not trying to say this system is junk . It does have durability issues more than anything . I personally prefer Gamecube but only by a small margin . All of you who immaturely spout PS2 rules , Gamecube XBox suck are not only lying to yourselves , you're doing a great disservice to the readers who depend on these reviews to make an important decision .
The bottom line is the Playstation 2 is a great system and definitely worth the money , but it is not gaming perfection as some make it out to be . Try Gamecube XBox as well . All three are extremely fun ! ! !

This is the first gaming system we have purchased for our children , and it is a big hit . After shopping and comparing , we decided to get the PS2 for 2 reasons : 1 ) The price was good compared to the Xbox and , 2 ) Huge game selection for all ages and interests . A month after purchasing the PS2 we have got our entertainment value from it already . We hit the local video store and took many PS2 games for test drives . I like The Shadow of the Colossus , and the many fantasy and RPG games available . My wife loves good old Sonic , Pac-Man , and all the arcade games . My daughter loves Curious George , and Chronicles of Narnia . If you are looking for a family gamily system , the PS2 is flexible , and a great value .

Now that PS3 is out , PS2 has become more affordable than ever . I have a PS1 , and this system allows me to play all of those games . It also works as a DVD player as well , so I can keep it in my gameroom as the sole DVD player as well . The system does run warm , but not much warmer than any of my other DVD players . And Many new PS2 games are still coming out , so this system is not dead yet . Sony has a winner in the PS2 , and if PS3 is half as good as PS2 , it will be the monster of gaming systems for a long time coming .

I had my PS2 for about 3 years now and no problems , plays very well . I like the Graphics and much better then the PS1 as a matter of fact you are better off with the PS2 cause it can play DVD , CDs , PS1 games and PS2 . So u getting a good deal .

I bought my PS2 since 2003 . I have never had any problems with it . I was in shock when I read all the reviews saying they had all these different problems and personally I have never had any of these problems what so ever . If you're buying the PS2 for gaming or as a DVD player you are getting your money's worth . I also own a Game cube and had an X-box . Of the three systems the PS2 is the most versatile in ' stock ' mode . With both the Gamecube and X-Box you need to buy additional hardware / software in order to play DVDs as opposed to the DVD ready PS2 . To date there have been over 100 million PS2 consoles sold throughout the world as opposed to Microsoft's 23 million and Nintendo's 22 million Gamecube units . Think about about it if 100 million ownners are proud of thier console won't you be too ?

First gamecube , this is a console built for the hardcore nintendo fans that love their mario and other classic charcters . the console does have the most games for kids but is not kiddy . but the way nintendo make their games they desevre their kiddy rep . the controller is the best molded for your hand but the buttons are weird and sports games will be hard . i played ncaa on gc and i almost died the controls were horrible . 6.0 / 10
second the xbox . this is the most powerful HARDWARE . not the software . xbox has the capability to produce amazing graphics but the games are good but not perfect . the library is huge and most run on both this and ps2 . the controller is clunky and the s version is better but still the worst . still good though . the pick over ps2 will all depend on games that are exclusive . the over hyped halo was great on the multiplayer side but the single player was horrible . i say buy the game buy online and skip the single player . 8.0 / 10
last the ps2 . soo sooo many games you woudn't belive . there is really something for everyone . the hardware is the worst but still can produce some impressive graphics . the controller is good but average . imo has the best buttons . the two analogs sticks work great for fp shooters . the hardware is limited and easy to break . but in all is great and everyone should pick up as second console if not first.if you like xbox you have to still have a ps2 on top of it .8.5 / 10

The Microsoft corporation has had a history of releasing flawed products ( most Windows OS ) and then releasing updated versions at ridiculous prices . However , the XBOX seems to be an extremely well made system . The Playstation , on the other hand , is not . While the games and the graphics are not far below those of the XBOX , the durability of the system is terrible . I've had mine for a little over a year , and it has become so much of a hassle trying to get it work that I hardly play it anymore . I have several friends who all experience the DISC READ ERROR problem , and I'm sure just about anyone who owns an original PS2 probably does too . While I realize that Sony apparently fixed this problem on the updated models , who honestly wants to shell out another $150 for a game system they already payed $150 for ? I have an original 8 - bit Nintendo system that took some damage when I was in grade school , but it still works , as well as the Super Nintendo I've had for over 10 years . And I took excellent care of the PS2 . The bottom line here is if Sony put out a faulty product , they should have some kind of obligation to fix it rather than make people pay twice . I promptly replaced my broken , piece of crap PS2 , but with an XBOX instead . And I've been encouraging others to do the same .

I've had the PS2 since it first came out when I was about 16 . 6 years later , and I have never had any problems with it that were not user induced . Take care of your stuff and it won't break . I like all of the consoles , but I'm just now getting an xbox 360 , mainly because of SquareSoft's new game , Infinite Undiscovery . Either way , just take care of your stuff . I still have a perfectly good Sega Genesis ; doesn't give me any problems .

I've bought two PS2 ' s . The first one when it came out , which i still use , and a Modded one , which broke shortly after . The modded one had a chip in it but i never really knew how to use it , lol . The PS2 has bad rumors about it being upright . If you hear so many , then why even waste 100 $ to test it ? I keep mine horizontal and its fine . The backwards feature and Blu-ray owned Xbox before it was even planned . Controllers ? They have adapter ports.Internet ? I'd rather pay a one time fee of 30 $ instead of a yearly fee of 60 $ . PS2 Controllers just seem more durable and more flexible for games . With that I mean you can play ANY type of game easy . The Xbox is made for war games mainly . This is a sort of rant on Xbox because of the talk of how its so good , but if you think about it , The PS2 matches it , and somewhat . . . Surpasses it .

This is okay cause it makes one good DVD player . It has such a huge library , you're bound to find a game . But it's graphics are horrible . Like it was said earlier , look at some games , RE-hashed PS1 . The DS proves it can do better than that . And the load times ( groan ) . Get it if you don't like innovation .

The Playstation2 is awesome . You can play Playstaion 1 games on it and watch DVDs too . It has better games on it . You can buy covers for it . I love it . All my cousins have a Playstation 2 now and now we borrow games from each other now .
the GTA series ( xbox , don't try to take credit for this one , sony has had GTA for years ) , all major final fantasys ( questionably the best series ever created ) Devil may Cry , resident evil ( gamecube wannabes , resident evil was MUCH better with sony ) . What does xbox have , halo , thats it . As for gamecube , its a child's system , am i the only one that realizes this ? ! play any mario for ten minutes and there is no question .
if your looking for versatilaty , and storage space , PS2 has everything you need . PS2 is the only system that is made to stand on its side or lay flat on the ground and still play just as well . Also , you can play CDs , as well as watch DVDs all on the PS2 , try doing that with a gamecube , o wait you can't , the discs won't fit ! As for xbox , tlak about going overkill . A hardcore gamer doesn't buy a system for storage space and the ability to mix there own music , they want games !
Now for innovation . Sony is like Mac , it does everything first , then rivals try to leech off of it , but it never comes out quite right on anything but the original . Which company was the first to have discs ? The first to go online ? Where did GTA , the defining game of my era ( me being 16 ) start ? The answer for all three is sony . it has the most user friendly design , it has easiest to understand , and most comfortable controllers , and who the hell cares if you have to buy an adapter for four player games , games that support four players are few and far between , inless your wasting your system's life span playing sports games . So before you come over and crap on sony , consider the facts , it has been , and still is , on the the top of the charts as far as sales go , ever since it was released so many years ago , so don't try and lie that any other next gen system can top this powerhouse .
005 4 I've owned my PS2 for a couple of years now , and I have used it a lot primarily for sports games but also for DVD playing . I have also played X-Box and Gamecube fairly extensively .
First , unless you need Mario to live , don't waste your money on Game Cube . The controller is aweful and its has no DVD playback . Further , the graphics are good , not great , and the processor is very reliable and fast .
Between X-Box and PS2 there is not a huge difference . X-Box probably has better graphics , a faster processor , and more features , but it freezes way to often . The revised controller ( ie the smaller one ) is a marked improvement over the original bulky one , but it still does not compare to the perfect controller that Sony has designed . Overall , in terms of games there is not a huge difference , but it seems that X-Box has released a few better ones like Halo but the difference is marignal if at all .
In the end , I chose PS2 . It is cheaper and has a better controller for sports games like Madden or TW Golf . Still you can't really go wrong with either and it comes down to personal choice .
019 4 For any Christmas buyers who don't know much about game systems , be rest assured that the PS2 will satisfy anyone . The graphics are hardly noticeably different from the XBox and Gamecube , and it have far and above the best and most quality games ( most for under $20 ) . Better yet , it plays all PS1 games as well , and DVDs right from the box . The new models come with progressive scan support . I can't think of any reason you would want another system . The PS3 will be coming out at the earliest of Christmas 2005 , and all PS1 and PS2 games will be backwards compatible .
A word of caution : The DVD playback is simplistic - - it doesn't have all the fancy features of a pure DVD player , although it will play any DVD .
Also important to note is that very few games are not made for the PS2 ( ie , Nintendo and Microsoft games ) . All other games are almost always made for PS2 first , because there are over 60 million PS2 owners out there - - more than Gamecube and XBox owners combined .
Take it from me , you can't go wrong with PS2 .

088 4 Everyone is always saying PS2 is the best system out there , so I'm going to start with the downside of buying a PS2 . First , after you buy one , they come out with a smaller edition . Second , the controllers are a bit flimsy . Third , buying a memory card . I found that the Xbox's onboard memory is alot better , as I can store millions of games and online downloads . Fourth , the graphics are a bit out of date on PS2 . The gamecube has worst , don't get me wrong , but the PS2 doesn't have anything special .
Now , the good side of getting this system is that you don't have to buy a special remote to play the DVDs , there are millions of games to suit all gamers , the controllers have a nice button configuration , and it still has better graphics than the newer Gamecube .
Before you buy this system , ask yourself if any of the games look appealing , what you'll be using it for the most ( because the DVD player can break really easily ) .
103 4 If you're on a budget , are interested in gameplay over graphics , and want a variety of games to choose from , the PS2 is the system for you . The graphics on the PS2 is admittedly not as fancy as the Xbox , but considering that the PS2 is almost 5 years old , its graphics aren't exactly Commodore 64 style . Its versatility comes out as a DVD player of good order ( I haven't had any problems with it yet ) and you don't need to purchace extra stuff to make it work . You can purchase a DVD remote for it , but you can still watch DVDs with just the regular control . Some people may jabber about the Xbox's harddrive , I say so what ? I don't know many people who have used all 8 megs of their memory card , and if you want to go to a friend's house , you just carry a small memory card rather than your entire bulky system .
Also , the game library for the PS2 is much larger than that of the Xbox with better exclusives . The only must-buy exclusive for the Xbox is Halo , and no other game on that system has caught my interest . All the games i've seen on the Xbox look really good , but that's not enough after a while .
So in a nutshell , if you have to have only one of these and you're not a hardcore gamer , the PS2 is the better choice . Even if you're a hardcore gamer , the PS2 would be a better bet .
211 4 I have owned this system for almost 4 years now and it hasn't dissapointed me yet . To me it's the best because of the wide selection of games . The PS2 has games for everyone ( from Spiderman to GTA ) and has a simple controller for everyone with small and big hands . The only problem is that you have to buy a multitap for 4 people and memory cards are needed . But the good thing about memory cards is you can take them anywhere you go . As for the games , I have 23 at the moment while my favorites are GTA San Andreas and Gran Turismo 4 . I could play those games for hours on end ( the PS2 won't heat up as quick either , that's if you have the thick PS2 ) .
Overall , this is the best system to buy right now . But at this time , I would rather just wait for the PS3 to come out .
