Vagrant Story

  • 031 4  This game is not perfect as the Famitsu review would lead you to believe . Famitsu has only given like 5 games a perfect score . . . this being one of them . The characters , design , music , story , atmosphere , and presentation are all top notch and beautiful . The story is sursprisingly mature and the characters are all memorable , especially that mystery man Sydney . So if all of those things are so good and put together , why did this game ' ultimately ' fail when it was released ? Because of its gameplay . The gameplay ' could have ' been fun and classic but the makers decided to bog it down with a tremendously confusing , tedious , and unintuitive menu and weapon system . The base of this game , its weapon system , is beyond complicated . Each weapon can be either piercing , blunt , or edged like a edged sword or a blunt hammer . Then each weapon has about 20 ' affinities ' such as light , water , physical , undead , etc . Then throw in the fact that each weapon must be made from seperate parts such as a blade , a grip or hilt , plus 1 - 3 gems . Lost yet ? You should be . But thats not all . Each weapon has damage points , kind of like health for weapons , and phantom points which inscrease special attacks . Throw in the fact that the longer you fight the more tired or excited your character gets , which leads you to miss more often and take more damage as the battle goes on . This game does have an awesome quick menu that can be used with the L2 button . This menu lets you do anything from find items to use magic with one push of a button . However , for some reason there is no weapon quick menu in a game almost totally based around your weapons ! To change weapons , and you will often , you have to make about 5 clicks through slow menus which can take anywhere from 10 secs to a minute . This games difficult learning curve has turned away so many players without the patience to learn this games ridiculous systems . After all , hitting a boss for 1 damage , when he has 500 health , can be very frustrating , and i dont blame them . In the end , this game is both brilliant and ridiculous . It has been voted one of the greatest games of all time and for good reason . But it also failed on a commercial and gameplay level by not selling enough copies . And thats for a good reason too . . .
    • 045 4  Every game that square makes is better than the last and now I'm really starting to wonder how square can make anything better than their newest masterpiece , Vagrant Story . The plot is exellent , and even whenever I'm playing the game , my mom comes and watches cuz its just such a great game ! The graphics and also really beautiful and extremely detailed , especially in fist person view . You will lose countless hours playing this game . I just bought it two days ago and although I not close to beating yet , I've already declared it as my fav game . Although its exam time over here , I can't help playing it ! I was planning to play it for only an hour last night , and i ended up playing till 4 in the morning ! the only way i could get myself to tear away from it was from severe fatigue ^ _ ^ This game is also very fun , and you can spend hours trying to perfect your timing during the combo . it also has a great customization system , so you call the calls on your equipment ! you can rename it , attach different orbs to them , combine , and build them up to make them powerful against different classes of monsters . this game is an experience not to be missed and should be bought as soon as you get money in your pocket ! ciao ! Gotta get back to Vagrant Story ^ _ ^
    • 079 4  I purchased this game on a whim . I knew nothing about it , but I was looking for an RPG that wasn't 4 discs long with a completely linear story ( Final Fantasy VIII ) . I was blown away . This game has a great story , that is easy to follow , is involving , and makes the game worth playing . I am only halfway through and I am dying to find out what the deal with Sydney is ! Is he good ? Is he bad ? Why is he so interested in Ashley . To me , the story makes the whole RPG ( final Fantasy VII is a great example ) . The battle system is like a cross between Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy . While I am not that thrilled with the whole RISK factor , it does create a challenge to make it through a battle with multiple opponents or one of the bosses . I like the different weaponry you can use and how each one has different timings , making combos difficult using different weapons . I agree with one of the other reviewers that being in a dungeon so much is rather depressing , but after being outside in the Forest , I would rather be in one of the dungeons just so I can see everything without trees obstructing the view . All in all , a fantastic game to own . And if you don't want to own it , it's small enough to rent and spend the weekend playing .
    • 085 4  I've honestly got to put this game in my top ten for the playstation , if not top five . It ranks up there with Castlevania : Symphony of the Night as far as the gameplay . The graphics are quite good for the PS1 , and the fighting system is excellent . Being able to combine and upgrade both weapons , and armors is almost a game in itself , trying to find what will give you the most bang for what enemies dropped . The storyline is intriguing , and will have you rooting for Ashley , and ultimately longing for the final confrontation . Replay value is sky-high with the 2nd playthrough allowing access to previously locked areas that are actually quite extensive and fairly difficult . Armor and stats continuing over into each new game make you more and more unstoppable , as you seek to complete the 30 tasks given on the options menu , some of which are extraordinarily difficult to achieve . You won't finish them all , but they do add to replay value . Overall this game gets a 5 + from me . Better than all but the most exceptional games .
    • 132 4  The Characters in Vagrant Story are amazingly developed - Sydney ( the villan ) is probably one of the coolest bad guys since Sephiroth . But be Warned - You will spend the entire game following him around through the same dark and danky dungeon fighting extremly annoying little monsters . There is only one town , Lea Monde , and you only see it ( and the light of day ) a handful of times throughout the game . I was very thankful for Electronic Boutique's 10 day return policy - because after about 6 days I was ready to throw the CD's out the window . I respect it for it's interesting spiritual / political storyline . . . but Vagrant Story hardly stands up to it's SQUARE predecessors , in summary - A waste of time and money .

  • 034 4  Recently on G4 Tech TV I was watching Filter , and they were counting down the top 10 underrated games of all time , and to my amazement and joy , Vagrant Story was rated the #1 most underrated game ever . There could be no title more worthy , and it saddens me that it has a 4 star average here on Amazon , though it's not really suprising . Vagrant Story was one of the final Square games to come out for the PS1 , and went by almost unnoticed . I didn't actually play it until it was a couple of years old . The graphics are without doubt some of the best ever seen on the PS1 . I wish we could have had voice overs in this game , but such things were still pretty uncommon on the PS1 . The sound is very good , light on music and heavy on creepy , atmospheric sound effects that really enhance the feeling of being lost in the huge mazes of buildings , tunnels , and dungeons . As it is , the dialogue is absolutely exceptional , and the story is complex , twisting , and really makes you think . Good and evil end up not being quite what you think they are . The story has a heavy emphasis on a religious , crusader / inquisition type group of characters , as well as incorporating sorcery and magic . I could never explain how great the story and characters of this game are . . . it's just magical . The world just sucks you in . The entire game takes place in an old abandoned ghost town on an island called Lea Monde . It is one of the most phenomenal environments ever created for a game . Much of the game takes place underground in old tunnels , vaults , caves , storage areas , and a huge variety of buried rooms , but there are also many areas where you emerge and have to explore the city aboveground . The feeling of the game is very lonely , and the old abandoned town of Lea Monde is amazing to explore . The amount of detail that was put into this game is just incredible , and it is evident at every moment just what a labor of love it was for those who made it . Not only is the game itself exceptional , but the plethora of details they incorporated makes it an all time classic . For example , on the map screen , every single room in the game ( and there are a lot ) has it's own unique name . There is one dungeon where every room ( and there are at least 30 ) is named after an implement of torture ! It's just great . There is a huge variety of enemies , and an in game encyclopedia that fills up as you encounter them . Combat is very difficult , and it seemed to me at first even too difficult , but once you get the hang of it , this game has one of the most fun , and definitely most unique , combat systems ever devised . With each swing you take , you can choose where to aim on the enemy ( left or right arm , legs , body , or head ! ) , and depending on the enemy , armor , and what type of weapon you are using , you will have a different % chance of hit and damage . There are about 6 or 7 types of weapons ( blunt , piercing , slashing , etc . ) and a HUGE variety of different weapons within these categories . Within this there are different gems that can be attached to your weapons to make them more efficient against certain types of enemies , give them elemental attributes , etc . Truly , this game has an almost intimidating amount of detail , but that's what makes it so great . You can armor all parts of your body , and every single weapon and every single piece of armor is customizable by combining lesser weapons and armor in workshops that can be found among Lea Monde . Materials range from course materials like wood and iron early in the game to silver and platinum materials later . Weapons have to be created and specialized in for different creature types . For example , I usually had a spear I used against dragons , a holy mace and a holy dagger for undead and zombies , and an axe that was most effiecent against humanoid creatures . Plus , you can actually name every weapon you create , which adds an awesome finishing touch to your arsenal . There is so much about this game that is great that I could go on for another hour and hardly scratch the surface . This game is thought provoking , its deep , and it is CHALLENGING . Not for wimps ! There is so much to explore , so many hidden features , such endless customization , this game just never gets old . And , it has a new game plus feature , so you can replay it with all the skills , equipment , and magic you've acquired . Damn , I didn't even touch on the magic . . . there is a huge variety of magic spells you can learn as well ! I've played through it probably 3 times over the past few years , and it remains fun every time I play , and I still haven't maxed out Ashley Riots potential . This game may not be for everyone . It is hard , confusing , and very deep . But for those of you that love fantasy games , a good story , great characters and dialogue , tons of character / equipment customization , and a big challenge , give this game a try . You can get it for cheap now , and even though it's a little dated , it may be one of your best game purchases in quite awhile . On a final note , I'm thrilled to know that the people who are responsible for this game and for Final Fantasy Tactics are the main creative force working on Final Fantasy XII right now . It should be phenomenal ! I can't wait .
    • 006 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) There are many good games . Resident Evil , Siphon Filter , Metal Gear , Tomb Raider , Tekken , Parasite Eve all come to mind instantly for most of us . As good as they are , they all have blemishes . The machinegun you're holding mysteriously changes to a glock when FMVs play between rooms in Resident Evil . The backrounds are stunning in Tomb Raider but many of the characters are animated so poorly it's distracting . The combat system in Parasite Eve is great , as far as RPGs go , but hardly involves the excitement that live combat controls bring . The grammar , acting , and backstories in most videogames . . . well , they're awful . Enter Vagrant Story . The animation ( mosters , humans , animals , elementals , water , magick ) is better than any Playstation game yet ; from the twitching ears on the Ogre to the slack jaws of the goblin kings . The combat system is perfect . Not being able to customize the key set is somewhat annoying , but it's so well designed you forget quickly and learn to lean on the O for combat instead of the X . The system is a perfect blend of RPG style ( think of the Parasite Eve ranging system ) with live buttons for defense and special attacks ( there are about a dozen special attacks and defenses which you gain with experience and assign to 3 keys for live combat ) . The score and sound are fantastic as well . It's one of the few games you can play with headphones and not notice glitches or poor mixing in the sound and music . Load times are good and always smooth . Bosses are extremely tough ( and there are many of them ) but not impossible to beat on the first try if you're in the swing of the game and know how to use all your resources . All that and a story that's interesting * and * sensical . How often does that happen ? You know you've bought the right game when watching the initial FMV . Ashley Riot ( the hero ) is told , . . . we need to wait for reinforcements . He replies , Reinforcements ? I am the reinforcements . Buy this game . PS2 games will look better but it will be awhile before they play better . They finally , finally , finally got it all right .

    • 010 4  . . . and you need it for this game . I absolutely loved it , but I know many people do not have the interest or patience for a long , difficult game . The story revolves around a Riskbreaker named Ashley Riot , send to the abandoned city of Lea Monde to track down a cultist , Sydney Losstarot . Most of the game takes place in Lea Monde , so make yourself at home there . Vagrant Story will probably take around 30 to 50 hours to beat on the first play , depending on how long you spend looking for weapon componants and spell scrolls . No , not gaining levels , this game is not level-based . You can only increase your stats , health , and magic with oh-so-rare potions and beating bosses . ( I started the game with 250 health and finished with 280 . ) Most of the 30 - 50 hours is spend dungeon crawling and fighting with the occasional pause for plot scenes . Be warned , the battles in this game are HARD . Normal enemies can take a lot of effort to kill , especially if they gang up on you . And you WILL die at bosses until ( and probably even after ) you get the hang of the battle system . It's not complicated , just heavily based on timing your attacks . There is some emphasis on problem solving and puzzles , mostly block puzzles , but not as many as other games ( ie , Soul Reaver ) . The graphics are a little bit blurry close up , but in general they are very fluid and well-done . The characters are given facial expressions and moving mouths when they speak , and the cut scenes ( while not CG ) are impressive . The best part of this game is definately the plot . Months after playing it , I'm still discussing the plot and characters . There are heavy religious and political themes ( another thing some people have no interest or patience for ) , and some very good plot twists even for the minor characters . If you enjoy a good , dark story and an ending that's not ridden with sappy cliches , you will probably like Vagrant Story . On the more solid end of things , the battle system is a nice change from battle-screen combat ( Final Fantasy games , for example ) . It's a bit like Secret of Mana in that you just run up and attack enemies . There is a variety of weapons and armour , so you can customize Ashley however you like . The bad points of this game would have to be how linear it is . There's basically only one major thing to do that's not required ( beat the Iron Maiden ) , but you can't get there until you beat it at least once . It's pretty much a straight path from beginning to end with no side quests , secrets , or prolonged breaks from dungeon crawling . There are some time trials , and the challenge of building up your weapons and armour , but in general there isn't much to distract you or many secrets to discover . The plot makes up for it , in my opinion , but a few side-quests and extra development for the minor characters ( Grissom , Samantha , etc ) would have been nice . I'd give Vagrant Story about a four . Supurb plot , good battle system , nice graphics . But a major minus for the lack of extra things to do . If you like a good story and enjoy a challenge , this game is for you . If you're the kind of person who likes plow through games without much effort and has no patience for battles or appreciation for a wonderful plot , pass .
    • 024 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) First of all , I have to say that I am a BIG fan of the Final Fantasy frenchise , I especially find the SNES and PS1 games to be some of the best Rpg's period ( if only we could erase FFX2 the world would be a better place ) I will not go on detail about the story itself , but I have to tell you that I find this game to be superior in every way . As soon as I saw the cover of this game I fell in love with it . I didn't know what it was about , but I knew I had to have it . My first impresion was WOW ! When I saw that intro , the movie like experiece gripped my soul , I thought . . . well , I'll be spending quite a few hours in front of my TV . As it turned out , I didn't , I found the game to be hard , beautiful , but hard . The fighting system was completelly different to anything I'd seen before , and I was not getting it . This was five years ago . Regardless of that , I kept starting it over and over again telling myself ' This time I'll finish it ! ' The story just grips you that much , and the characters personalities leave you wanting to know more . Sure enough , I became a pro in the ' arts ' , weapon affinities and such , and I finished my game . . . again and again , and again . In short , this is in my opinion one of the greatest RPG's , if not game , of all times . But it is a bit hard to get used to it , or even become good at it ( unless I'm just an idiot . . . which is entirely possible ) but once you get the flow of the fighting system , you will not be able to stop . So please do not cast it aside ! just keep trying , and your reward will be gratifying .

    • 028 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Vagrant Story is the kind of game that is either love it or hate it . There really isn't too much in between . It features great characters and one of the greatest stories in any game released to date , but the amount of attention that must be paid to weapons and stats ( along with some redundancy in battles ) can really turn a lot of people off . Let me start with a bit of the story . In the game you play the role of Ashley Riot . A man who is entrusted with the duty of being a Riskbreaker ( essentially a one man army ) who is entrusted to enter the lost city of Lea Monde to try and figure out an assassination plot that he has been framed for . At the start of the game this is all you know . You know that Ashley went to Lea Monde and was never seen again . Three days after he left , they declared him the murderer . Now you have to find out what happened in the city of Lea Monde and uncover the truth . With a supporting cast of characters lead by the wonderfully evil Sidney Lostarrot , Vagrant Story weaves an amazing tale of lost pasts and hidden truths ( with some black magic and whatnot thrown in ) . Be aware though , the story isn't all happy like you will be apt to find in the Final Fantasy series , it goes much deeper into human emotion and psyche . As for the gameplay , well , this is where it is either won or lost . Essentially the game is a dungeon crawler that has you wandering the dungeons of Lea Monde until you find a neccesary item to continue traversing through . There is a lot of backtracking but luckily half way through you learn a teleport ability that cuts down on that . You can think of it as similar to the backtracking in Resident Evil games for those familiar ( find a locked door , need such and such key / item , find item / key elsewhere , go back and proceed ) . All the while you will be encountering various monsters of different classes . While it may not seem like much , monster class is critical to how effective you are at the game . You have the ability to craft your own weapons and armor , each one can have special affinities to different classes . Essentially this means you will want a weapon that is effective against each different enemy class . This is where all the in depth stat management comes in ( as well as a lot of use of the EQUIP function . . . . ) . Attacking enemies is done in real time and allows you to pretty much attack indefinately as long as your timing is good for chaining attacks together . On top of that you can target individual body parts on every monster to weaken different stats ( legs = movement , head = intelligence , and so on and so forth ) . By doing this and inflicting enough damage to one body part you can effectively nullify your enemies strength . Although it can be apt to take quite a while . Graphically , the game is fairly bland even for PS1 standards . It is made almost with a sketch visual , where there are multiple lines to every section of the characters ( similar to what you would see in preproduction sketch books ) . Although it does work extremely well and seems perfectly natural in the twisted reality that is Lea Monde . All scenes are done in the same graphics engine ( no CG ) and there is no voice acting so all words are said in speech bubbles . Again , odd , but it works . The game is definately quirky and is definately a bit of a niche game . It is pretty long and requires the player to really get in depth into what they are doing to truly appreciate all the work and the amazing world that has been imbedded into Vagrant Story . If you can do that , it is one of the most rewarding gaming experiences you can have . If not , then consider your self one of the masses , because that seems to be the general view of the game .

    • 030 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This game is not perfect as the Famitsu review would lead you to believe . • 036 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) But what squaresoft game isn't ? Vagrant story is a shining gem in the world of role playing games . And quite unique at that . Unlike almost all other RPGs , in Vagrant Story you don't rely on leveling up on experience points to become stronger . Instead you have to depend on gaining new break arts , battle abilities and magics . Of course you can up your HP and MP with potions and a cute little slot machine at the end of boss fights , but you can only raise these stats by a few points at a time . One of the cooler things about Vagrant Story is the ability given to you to make your own customized weapons . You can pick up swords , clubs , spears , daggers and other fun things off of defeated enemies and out of treasure chests . From there , you can find workshops ( scattered throughout the game ) and combine them , take them apart , attatch gems to them , repair them , and pretty much do whatever you see fit . Another neat thing about the weapon system is that the more you use a specific weapon against a certain class of enemy ( ie undead ) , the more powerful your weapon becomes against it ! So the more you use your favorite falchion , the stronger it gets ! ^ . ^ Last but not least , one of the more enjoyable ( and sometimes more frustrating ) things about this game is that it's HARD . Alot of RPGs these days are oh-so too easy , and you find it a rarity that you're killed . Vagrant Story , my friends , is a different story ( heh heh , PTP ) . I've died more in this game than in Final Fantasy VI , VII AND VIII put together and then some . You have to constantly watch your back , because one lucky blow from a dragon's tail and you're down for good . To wrap everything up , I LOVE THIS GAME ! If you're a real hard-core RPG fan , ( or not ! ) you'll really appreciate squaresoft's genius . My god , what will they think of next ? Oh , a Final Fantasy Movie perhaps ? Nah , that won't be happening anytime soon ^ . ~
    • 039 4  This game is about to get a lot of attention , more attention than it's had in the years since its Spring 2000 US release . Final Fantasy XII looms on the horizon , and it's the creative vision of Yasumi Matsuno . Vagrant Story is another of Matsuno's brainchildren . Once FFXII has been out for a couple of weeks and everybody's beaten it , a lot of those people are going to find out about Vagrant Story for the first time and go scrambling over to eBay to get a copy . This review is for them . Almost everything about Vagrant Story is par excellance . The story , the script , the characters , the graphics , the soundtrack . . . The English translation is especially spectacular , due to its masterful coloring with Olde English which adds so much flavor to the tone and atmosphere . This is one of the ultra rare cases where the English translation is arguably far superior to the original Japanese script . Unfortunately , all of these shining examples of fine craft and video game design as true art is all for naught because of one single fatal flaw : The game simply isn't fun to play . Where the game ultimately fails is in the game play . First of all , the game is extremely focused . It's all dungeon crawling and fighting . There are no towns to explore and shop in , no NPCs to talk to , no minigames . Once you enter the dungeon , that's it . You will progress through different areas and get a change in scenery from time to time , but there is almost no variety in the gameplay . You move from room to room , you solve the occasional crate puzzle , and you fight enemies . End of story . The battle system in and of itself is fine . It's an interesting hybrid cross between standard real time action combat and traditional RPG turn based combat . The problem is , at the very heart of the battle system is an abysmally UN-fun weapon and armor system . There are several ( eight ? ) classes of enemies in the game - Beast , Human , Dragon , Undead , Phantom , etc . The enemy classes are paired off into diametric oppositions . e.g . Using your weapon against a human enemy will make it stronger against humans , but weaker against phantoms . ( sic ) On top of that , there are specific weakness ratings . An enemy might be weak against blunt weapons , but almost totally impervious to edged weapons or piercing weapons . And then there are the usual elementals as well - fire , ice , earth and so on . Finally , each of your weapons has its own wear rating . The lower the rating , the more worn out the weapon , the less damage it does . You must repair your weapons in workshops , which are few and far between in the game . Another thing you can do in workshops is disassemble your weapons and reassemble the parts to make new weapons . Whether the new weapon will be better or worse than the weapons you sacrificed to make them involves much trial and error . The end effect of all of this is that as you play the game , you are literally constantly changing weapons . Yet the creators of the game didn't bother to implement any sort of quick menu for weapon switching , a la Secret of Mana . You have no choice but to spend 45% of your game time opening the main menu , opening the weapon menu , finding the right weapon , opening the accessory menu , changing the elemental jewels on the weapon , etc . etc . etc . All they had to do was come up with some sort of quick menu for changing weapons , as Seiken Densetsu 2 did seven years earlier . As it stands , Vagrant Story is a micro-management nightmare . To call the game tedious is an understatement of epic proportions . There are those who insist that a viable alternative is simply slogging your way through the game using whatever weapons you happen to have , whether they're effective or not . It can be done , but it makes the game even less fun . Why anyone would want to take on a boss with several thousand HP by doing only 1 - 3 points of damage per hit is beyond me . As is always the case , no matter how flawed a game may be , there will be a small niche group of vocal supporters who insist that it's the greatest game ever created , and that people who don't like it just don't get it . Beware of misguided fanatics . But hey , then again you just might end up being part of the 5% of people who play this game and come away thinking it's the bee's knees . EDIT - Apparently the star ratings aren't displayed exactly as they were input . I gave Vagrant Story * * ( 2 / 5 ) for Fun and * * * * ( 4 / 5 ) Overall .
    • 042 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) What can I say ? This is absolutely one of the best games I have ever played . Everything about it is extraordinary : the graphics , story , gameplay , replay value . Its all there . I really didn't think Final Fantasy VIII was that great of a game and I thought this game might be the same , but I WAS WRONG . This game is very original , and has one of the best game systems I have ever seen . Go rent it because there are some people who think this game isn't very good because you only have one character , but if you like it BUY IT .
    • 044 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Every game that square makes is better than the last and now I'm really starting to wonder how square can make anything better than their newest masterpiece , Vagrant Story .
    • 054 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I played it and it was ok . Yeah the fighting was good . ( think parasite eve ) . But i guess its just me . It gets boring staying in a dungeon for the whole game . ( 25 - 30 hours ) . I like people interaction . Going to towns and cities with lush colorful environments . I just didn't like the atmosphere and the feel . If your ok with that , then the game is a blast . But I wasn't ok with it . If your like me , there is better stuff out there like legend of mana or or saga frontier 2 . But like i said this is a great game if you can get over the dull atmosphere .
    • 058 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I decided that I needed a classic RPG to quench my thirst for gaming recently . I have grown a bit freary of modern games and couldn't deny the mid - 90 ' s for their RPG prowess . So , i decided to go with the crown jewel ; Squares PSX swan song of Vagrant Story . All i will say is , buy this game . Deepest battle system of its time ( by about a decade ) . Basically it is Fallout 3 ' s VATS . Leveling up is a chore to be enjoyed and customizing youre weapons is a big deal too . The graphics , story , gameplay and audio are all top notch .
    • 064 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Vagrant Story is easily one of the best Playstation games ever made . In my opinion it is the second greatest game of all time , Xenogears being the best . The plot is clever and twisting , and it tempts you into playing more to see exactly who and what your character is while still trying to solve the underlying mystery of the game , which can be forgotten if you are not careful . It is obvious from the ending that there will be sequels . The only strange aspect of the game in my opinion is the name ; it is titled Vagrant Story and is part of the Risbreaker Saga , but I think they may end up wishing they called it Riskbreaker Story and made it part of the Vagrant Saga . You'll see what I mean once you complete this spectacular game . Good Luck and Enjoy .
    • 068 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Lets face it.Vagrent Story is the best role-playing game by far.The graphics are the best I've ever seen on the Playstation. But the battles are the best in any RPG yet. There are a LOT of monsters to kill and some of the bosses are very hard.In otherwords this game is a masterpiece .
    • 074 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) let me just say this , from a scale of 1 - 5 this definitly earns a 6 ! if u are intrigued at all follow your feelings and GET THIS GAME . i promise you , you wont regret it . this is an aswome game that only comes once every few years .
    • 076 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) this game is awesome . its hard but not 2 hard that u give up like tr3 . chain system is cool + teaches u 2 use it only if u need 2 otherwise ull get tired . too many bosses + not enough exploring tho . could have been better but not by a lot . play control is awesome + responsive . graphics are good , could be better - some blocky areas . music is phenominal . don't play this one w / the strat . guide cuz it'll be 2 easy that way . play it on ur own + this 1 will last a month , easy .
    • 078 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I purchased this game on a whim .
    • 081 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This game was better than a barrel of monkeys ! And believe me I know . The bad guy was a scary as a lion at feeding time . One question : why does he have to walk around shirtless ? Is is a display of his power and his ultimate superiority ? As if to say I don't need armor , silly ingrates . The use of word bubbles was a very cool idea . I've never seen dialogue displayed in such a fashion . Fear Effect came the closest . BUY THIS GAME ! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
    • 083 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This game was exactly what I was looking for . VS has a look and feel and moodiness all it's own . All of my favorite things ( movies , D D , comics ) come to life in presentational form . I can't believe this ridiculous game fits on one disk ! Two things : plan on spending about 1 hour per percent complete and . . . BRAVO SQUARE for putting some love into it ! This is exactly why they're the only company I blindly buy games from .
    • 087 4  Square has always been known to develop quality titles and Vagrant Story proves its still one of the best in the game industry . Created by the same team who brought you Final Fantasy Tactics , Vagrant Story offers something quite different yet refreshing to the world of gaming . You are hero Ashley Riot , a Riskbreaker agent who chases the mysterious cult figure Sydney Losstarot into the city of Lea Monde . Throughout the game , you'll attempt to clear your name for being accused of murder while uncovering remnants of your past . Vagrant Story proves you don't need an overly epic storyline to make a game impressive , and this game definitely has one of the best scripts ever written for a video game . Unlike other big-budget Square titles , which the storyline or visuals are the dominating aspects , gameplay is the star of Vagrant Story . As fair warning , this is NOT a game for casual gamers , which someone can just pick up and play . While battling , you target enemies ' bodyparts with the use of a sphere grid . You'll learn to chain combos but your risk meter will rise , making you more vulnerable . You'll also learn to forge your own weapons and armor , do puzzle-solving and much more . The visuals are outstanding . You feel as if you really did visit Lea Monde with its dungeons and ruins . The character designs are equally amazing and the graphics push the PlayStation to its limits . Sound-wise , the music is hauntingly atmospheric and everything from the grunts and groans of monsters to the sounds of magic spells accent the game perfectly . Although the difficulty level is a bit high and requires some patience and even frustration , it will still be an interesting but rewarding experience for anyone who really does get into it and understand the gameplay fluidly . The amount of time and effort you put into the game will determine how much fun will you have in the long run . You have to become deeply involved and immersed in order to enjoy Vagrant Story , but once you do , you'll realize you are playing one of the most unique games ever created . It's really like no other , even though it didn't receive enough recognition that it deserved . Give it a chance , it may grow on you .
    • 089 4  The three draws of this game . One helluva story revolving around intrigue - - incredibly written . Unique battle action emphasizing timing and weapon management . DEPTH . . . This word doesn't properly describe it . This game , if you attempt to fully understand all of the management options , is almost overwhelming . Monster type and element affinities for each individual weapon is a start to this depth . Then the variety of weapons ( anything from crossbows to swords to axes to sledge-hammers ) , each attuned to further damaging a few different types of enemies comes next . Not only must you micromanage with a magnifying glass , but you must also power up a certain type of weapon for each of the six classes of monsters ( can usually get away with one weapon per two classes ) . This adds a strategic element to a game based in action . If you need a thinking game that doesn't fail to please , give Vagrant Story a try . It may be your cup of tea .
    • 090 4  Unless your mind isn't able to grasp a game that takes more than ' button a , b , c , d and ' R ' this or that . . . This game could never be called boring . It is , however , complex , challenging , and requires more thought than you usual shoot ' em up rpg . Ofcourse This review is opinion . Take it as such . Games like Diablo ( I II ) , Soul Reaver ( yadda yadda ) , and The like do necessitate more thought . Now to jump down off my soap box , I , end my review with this : I enjoyed it , try it for yourself bfore formng an opinion from this or any other rev . . . .
    • 102 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) OPVerall this game is good although im only 7 hours into the game but you stayin the same place all the time . Im a big fan of the ff series 5 - 8 and thought this would have been better . This game is like Granstream Saga with parasite eve and a liittle rpg involved . if you liked those games you will like this .
    • 104 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This is one of the absolute best gaes I've played on PlayStation since Soul Reaver : Legacy of Kain
    • 110 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I am only 3 - 4 hours into the game , yet I was instantly hooked . The cut-scenes are just spectacular and blend very well into the normal gameplay . The only complaint that I have is that the battle system is a little confusing at first . Took me a while to figure out that you could string along attack chains into awesome combo's or defense chains into strong defensive ploys . But , it has to be the coolest feature of this game . If you are looking for a traditional RPG , this isn't it . This is a truly different aspect of the RPG genre , but I welcome it to stay . Can't wait for more games like this to come out in the future .
    • 116 4  Vagrant Story is the story of Ashley Riot , a Riskbreaker with supressed memories . As you progress through this game you acquire memories , not only of battle skills and break arts but of your past . But are those memories of your family reliable ? Were they planted , but by whom and why ? VS's story will grab you by the throat , twist and turn and still have you wondering what happened at the end . To some , the idea of making your own armour and weapons sounds tedious , but the reality of it is something else . It's great to see something you've created in action against a knight , a dragon a tough Boss . So take the time to read up on this part of the gameplay . The graphics , although somewhat dated now , are still excellent . The music is captivating . I would , however , have preferred actors to play the character's voices and thereby imbue them with life rather than having to read every nuance and gasp . My only negatives of this game are the slot-machine way of increasing skills and the beatability of it . Without a doubt it's the most difficult game I've ever played and , I felt , needlessly so . Don't get me wrong , I like a challenge , but I'm not keen on impossibility , which in all honesty I felt it was - in fact I couldn't complete VS game without cheat codes . And that , for me , was a decided negative and why I didn't award it 5 stars . So if you like a good game with a great story that's a challenge to your skills as a player Vagrant Story will cover all that and more .
    • 119 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I dont know about this one . I didn't really enjoy it too much . The beginnings got to catch me for me to continue and it just wasn't doing it for me .
    • 123 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Vagrant Story is much more compicated then a game should be . The battle system is really complex and hard to figure out . But the storyline is awesome and the characters are wonderfully detailed . All in all it is a pretty good game , i guess .
    • 125 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I brought this game brand new back in 2000 . I remember testing it out at Funcoland . At the time there was much talk about it and it seemed like an interesting game . Convinced , I picked it up and brought it home . I must say the novelty of this game wears off quickly . You play as a character named Ashly Riot who is set out to rescue his partner who is trapped at the hands of a madman named Sydney . The game is dark and very depressing . You stay in one basic dungeon for a majority of the game . It's 2009 and I pulled the game out to play it again . Unlike Final Fantasy 8 that came before it , this game has not aged well at all . The game isn't too beautiful artistically , and you feel as though the designers did not put much energy into the game . Not to mention that part of the team that did final Fantasy 8 worked on this project . It just seems as though the game was lazily created . The plot doesn't move you at all to continue the game , it's a basic hero fights villian and save the girl story . The turning points of the game are the fighting system which allows you to strike select areas on your enemies body . This at the time was new and innovative , but not verywell executed seeing as it makes little difference with the risk meter involved . The risk meter is a gauge that increases as you fight your oppenents . As the gauge fills up , your chance to hit goes way down . This really is a down point of the game as it is not necessary and makes the game more difficult that it needs to be . The overall game itself is pretty boring to say the least . The aptmosphere is again in a dark dungeon the entire game , which gets tiresome and becomes an eyesore . Mainly because you feel as though your in the same area the entire game . Vagrant Story could of had much potential , but its repetitive gameplay and aptmosphere leave this one bitting the dust .

    • 127 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This is one of those games Square released that seems promising , but falls short in one or many of ways . The bulk of the game takes place in a dungeon . You guide Ashley through a series of rooms all while battling bats and cave-dwelling creatures you come across . The battles take place in a real time fashion ; however , fights run on a chain system . When you attack an enemy , an exclamation point appears above Ashley's head as an indication to press another attack button to continue your onslaught . Ashley has a variety of weapons he can equip which changes the way he attacks his oppoenent . Instead of HP , Ashley has an indicator ( starts out green to indicate full health ) that determines his health . It is divided by his arms , body , etc . When the health of a part of his body is depleted , it is safe to say that that part of his body no longer functions until his health is restored . While the idea sounds cool , he is only character under the player's control . The game CAN be difficult . Exploration takes place in a dungeon . The player will reach a room where a spell is necessary to get through the door . Sometimes the spells are easy to locate , and other times the player must backtrack through many rooms to obtain the necessary spell . The graphics were among the best . The game had somewhat of a comic book feel to it - - the character nicely animated and bore many details . The detail really brings a certain feel to the game and the dungeon , despite being a dungeon , actually looks quite nice . This is one of the few games I will say is completed for or less for its story and gratification , not fun . There isn't much fun to be had as there is a lot of backtracking and scouting to be done with little or no deviation . The spells do add to the game , but not much . Pros : - Graphics - Interesting Story - Intriguing Battle System - Interesting Villain - Chilling atmosphere Cons : - Too much backtracking - Entire game takes place in a dungeon - How Many bats must I fight ? - Where do I have to go next ? - I forgot which way I was going / came from If you must try the game out , I recommend renting it first . If you're a die hard Square fanatic , love games with a dark feel , or love dungeon crawlers , you will like it .

    • 129 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) If you want to know if this game is good or not without having to read paragraph upon paragraph just read this review . Bottem line is is that if you have some sort of Dungeon crawler fetish this is your thing . It's a dungeon crawler with heavy RPG elements and thats it . So if you like box puzzles ( many many ) and demons and such ( many many ) . Not to mention that all you ever do is do the to of the above ( no mini-games or diversion or nothing ! ) then this games for you ( only one paragraph ! ha : )
    • 131 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) The Characters in Vagrant Story are amazingly developed - Sydney ( the villan ) is probably one of the coolest bad guys since Sephiroth .
    • 134 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) ok if your the type of gamer who loves RPG's and a realy indept story line than this game is for you . . . this lets you do every thing . . . from nameing your weapons to combineing weapons with gems and other weapons too ! you'll face thousands of bad guys from lizards , knights , and ogars . to minotars , huge dragons , and even DEATH
    • 138 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This game is a mixed bag , full of pros and cons . For example : Con : It's an extremely dark game that mainly consists of running around in a dungeon where the view makes it difficult to see what your character is doing . Pro : The music , the dark , and espionage filled storyline create a wonderful atmosphere of mystery and fear . . the battle system is excellent , but the puzzles are the boring cube-movin ' , lever pullin ' type . It's not extremely long , so you're probably better off just renting it . . . : )
    • 140 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Amazing graphics , with easy to learn game play , and a story line seeming fit for a movie spectacular . Follow in the steps of a lonely warrior unsure of his past , searching everywhere for the answers while on the trail of an evil black magic wielding villian . Face off against dragons , golems , zombies , ghost's , and some of the most amazing monsters , and bad guys you have ever seen . A True classic , Not matched by any game of any genre . Finally a game that gets better and better , the more you play . one of those games you will never want to finish , and when you do youll want to do it again . Untouchable .
    • 142 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This game is an excellent game all around . It has flawless graphics , beautiful backgrounds , nice music , and the best battle system since Final Fantasy VII . The story is dark and mysterious , which is really intriguing because every few hours you come across a large twist in the plot . The character's designs are awesome , and the medieval tone of the whole game tops it off . But with the excellence comes the flaws . First of all , about 7 hours into the game , the endless dungeon crawling will most definetly get repetitive . But if you are a dungeon crawler , you will have no problem with that . The characters ' costumes are not the best . . . you can see their B-hinds when they are facing backwards . ( i.e . the peach colored spots on Ashley's pants ) . There are also steamy love scenes from time to time which may not be appropriate for younger gamers . The fact that to get 100% map completion you need to go through the game 3 times is too much . There is no replay value here , mainly because of the box puzzles that appear in every other room . If you want to get Vagrant Story , rent it first . If you dont like it , launc for Legend Of Dragoon !

    • 171 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) this game was a total dissapointment to me staying in the dungeon for the praticcaly the whole game was a eyesore if anyone thinking about buying this game don't . Also it is way to easy .
    • 173 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) i played it it is the most exellent game i have played I like shana she is cool . and awesome I think darts cool .

  • 037 4  But what squaresoft game isn't ? ~
    • 027 4  The perfect game except for Legend Of Dragoon and maybe Chrono Cross when it comes out . This game has INCREDIBLE graphics , real-time backgrounds ( as oppossed to pre-rendered , like most RPGs to date ) and the most unique , innovative battle system I have ever seen . The characters talk in word bubbles , so you don't get those annoying text boxes obscuring you vision of all the eye-candy this game has to offer . The battle system happens in real-time . You go up to an enemy , and then you hit a button . You hit O to just plain attack , and even then you can pick seperate body parts of the enemy and chain attacks to get cool combos , and if you're EXTREMELY good , and your weapon strength and your agility are high , you can even take out a boss in one hit ! You can also use magic ( duh ) and break arts , which are special attacks that you learn by destoying enemies with different types of waepons . Then , you can use your break art at the cost of some of your HP . The replay is also good , because you can set high scores , complete secret missions , ( you don't know what they are till you fullifll the conditions ) and you can't get 100% of map and chests in the game until you alerady beat it once . Also , once you beat it , you can start from the beginning keeping all your stats and spells and everything else . If you own a PlayStation , you have NO reason not to own this game , too .
    • 082 4  This game was better than a barrel of monkeys ! BUY THIS GAME ! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

  • 062 4  Vagrant story can best be described as a dungeon crawler . You assume the role of Asley Riot who must go after Syndey some guy from a cult that is obsessed about the destruction of the world . LET me be straight with you other gamers , this game is by no means necessary like Metal gear solid . You explore a variety of areas and must change your weapons every so often . The battle system is easy but it will take time getting used to this style of game . By no means necessary are you going to be able to get far the first time in this game . Instead explore and get used to the chain attacks . The chain attacks are what is going be best remembered about vagrant story . For a game this is by far one of the most challenging games this year . If you feel up to par give it a rental . Nothing more . If you enjoy the first time consider yourself lucky . For others try something with a little more variety . Such as Chrono Cross or something on the lines of Legend of Dragoon . This is by no means a bad game judging by my review . I'am just saying that is a good game . But by no means for everybody .
    • 060 4  Vagrant Story is one of the best RPGs ever created. From the first moment when I put the CD into my PS I was swept away by the incredible atmosphere that the game creates. The amazing intro simply left me sitting in front of the TV set with my mouth open , staring at the it [ I mean the TV : ) ] . The thing which helped me get into the atmosphere the most was the absolutely incredible sound. It is unbelievable ! You just have to hear it.The game also has an incredible story that takes many unexpected turns thus keeping the player under costant pressure. And last but not least its gameplay is the best of the best that can be found right now anywhere.Well I guess that's it.I can't think of anything else I can say about Vagrant Story except that every fan of RPGs MUST have it at any cost . Bye for now !

  • 065 4  Vagrant Story is easily one of the best Playstation games ever made .
    • 093 4  This is one of , if not the best , blend of many genres into one game ever . Theres action , RPG , strategy . The story line is deep , dark , and involved . The plot , though great , is quite confusing . It takes alot of time and patience to play this game succesfully , but I would whole heartedly say it is worth it . Plus it has great replay value , you'll atleast want to go through twice , more if your a perfectionist . All in all this is one of the best games I have ever played .
    • 095 4  This game for starters is one of the best games for Playstation . I love the graphics , the rich textures add a lot to Lea Monde , and the speed of play is incredible . It is truly amazing that these guys are running the PS with a 66 or 75 mhz CPU and I not sure but I know that that is pretty incredible . The best part of this game is that it is fit all onto one little disk . But really that is a lot of space . Zelda : Ocarina of Time was fit onto that 64 Megabit cart and it is pretty awesome . Want to experience the Sixth Sense of Video games first hand ? Buy this game . You will not be sorry . I find it not only challenging but incredibly addicting . This is one of the more interesting titles I have ever purchased . But one of the best also .

  • 099 4  Seriously ! I do ! REALLY ! Anyway , enough about Square . Now for Vagrant Story ! This game has phenomonal graphics for a Playstation game . The enviorments are not only well made but beautiful ! AND , with the look around feature u can look at certain objects and admire their bueaty . The Gameplay is great , having a huge choice of weapons and some you made your own too . The Battle system is like Final Fantasy tactics combined with Threads of Fate . It's all in real-time , but has a limit where your range , spells , and items can go . ARRRGGGHH ! It's so hard to explain , yet so simple . BUY the game !
    • 109 4  1 word-Amazing ! Vagrant Story is truly one of the best games Squaresoft has created . With great control , sound , graphics , and fun factor , this is truly worth buying . A true medieval time with sorcery of great power !
    • 135 4  ok if your the type of gamer who loves RPG's and a realy indept story line than this game is for you . . . this lets you do every thing . . . from nameing your weapons to combineing weapons with gems and other weapons too ! you'll face thousands of bad guys from lizards , knights , and ogars . to minotars , huge dragons , and even DEATH
    • 167 4  I rented this game after stumbling upon the squaresoft sign at blockbuster . . . . i was dissapointed . I put over 10 hours of my time into this game only to stay in the same boring dungeon . The game play system was very innovative i have to give it that , but it lagged greatly in the amount of interesting things that happen . Sorry Square , but this one is a bore . For alot of fun , i reccomend a 3 - D game called Brave Fencer Musashi . It is really cool .

  • 133 4  I bought this game about 3 months ago with very high expectations and excitement for the game I loved the grphics and storyline I saw.But after playing the game for about 3 days I got bored . I personally think the game is to slow moving and the storyline just drags on and on with no change in it . The charachter Ash seems to stay in a dungeon which I think should have been more designed for exploring and attrbute building than being a main storyline area. The weapon and magic sytem design is way to complicated to be any fun to use esp . if you are a first time rpg'er and you play this game.So all in all I personally think I wasted my money and time with this game but thats my own opinion and I will stick with my FF games and other rpgs .
    • 046 4  As far as I know , Squaresoft has yet to come out with a bad game . When I bought this game I didn't really know what to expect . I knew it had a different fighting system , but that can mean lots of things . I have trouble putting the controller down when I play this game . It is extremely fun . The story line is good , the graphics are great , and the battle system isn't incredibly complex . I highly recommend this game to any hardcore gamer .
    • 067 4  This game is very fun and the battle system is one of the best I've ever seen . Good graphics although you won't be amazed by the area you are in . It takes place in a dark and stormy castle that seems more like a dungeon . You don't know whether you are running in circles or your eyes are deceiving you because it seems like you run through the same place at least five times a minute . I would expect them to Squaresoft to know better than to start you in such a gloomy set . I think you should wait for Chrono Cross rather than getting this game .
    • 113 4  Vagrant Story is a great game . The graphics are pretty good and the look of the game is nice . The battle system is much like Parasite Eve's battle system , which I like . The plot is great and if you like Square then this is definitely a game to buy .
    • 120 4  I dont know about this one . I didn't really enjoy it too much . The beginnings got to catch me for me to continue and it just wasn't doing it for me .
    • 145 4  Just buy it and play for an hours . You will not able to put your hands off the controler . I guarantee .
    • 149 4  I ' m not one of those people who think that if a game has the name Squaresoft on it , it's a good game . While Squaresoft does make a lot of great games , they also manage to churn out some pretty boring ones , too , like both Saga Frontier games and this one . The graphics are ok , nothing special . The colors suck , pretty much the whole game consists of different shades of gray , black , and brown . The battle system is also not much fun . I don't know , it just didn't interest me . It's a good thing I only rented it . I suggest you do the same before you buy .
    • 163 4  I loved this game . It had all the characteristics of FF and more . The graphics weren't as good as FF , but the creatures were amazing and so was the plot . I think everyone there should buy this viddeo game it's so cool !
    • 165 4  I never got to far playing this game . Up to the first save and after that I'm stuck and can't proceed in the game . So I really didn't like this game .
    • 170 4  I can't believe Square Soft put out a game with game play and a storyline as lame as Vagrant Story . The battle commands are unwieldy and time-consuming , and the dialog balloons are rather childish and distracting . Granted , some of the effects and characters are neat , but I have to say the best thing about this game was the opening sequence . After that , it's a disappointment for experienced gamers . I played the game for about three hours until I couldn't stand it anymore , thinking I would get used to it , but I just didn't like it .
    • 174 4  i played it it is the most exellent game i have played I like shana she is cool . and awesome I think darts cool .

  • 156 4  Quite frankly this game doesn't live up to all the hype . I still can't believe how people say the graphics are so good since they are all completely dull dark and dreary , not to mention blockier than most SNES games I've played . The sound is nearly non existant . hardly any music in the game at all , just a plethora of drips squeaks squeals and puking noises . Gameplay isn't too bad , though it isn't exactly the most fluid I've ever played , and the objects in a room tend to get in your line of sight all too frequently , no matter how you swing the camera view . The battle system is a Parasite Eve clone thats been tuned up to the point of being almost too complicated to use . it takes practice for certain . The monsters are outrageously easy if you simply use hit and run tactics . the bosses on the other hand tend to be amazingly hard if you don't know what you are doing . Plot is relatively non existant in this game . the opening movie pretty much gives you the basic run of the game . the game tends to lead you around by the nose for the first hour or so and then you have a very limited number of option available for the duration of the game . Its just another dungeon crawl . I love Dungeons and Dragons but even that gets boring if you do nothing but one dungeon exploration after another and thats really all this game is . the true value of the game comes from being able to find a multitude of weapons and armor and then being able to make use of various workshops to combine those items into more powerful armaments . unfortunately this is tedious and time consuming , taking up more than 3 / 4 of the game . Overall they just took a rather bland game and tried to cram in all kinds of technical stuff , taking nearly every RPG option you could think of and trying to put it all in one game . If i wanted to spend all my time reworking weapons i'd have been a blacksmith in life .
    • 048 4  This game has me totally addicted . It reminds me alot of another of my favorite PS games , Castlevania : Symphony of the Night . If Konami made a Castlevania like this , wow ! The only downfall is that you dungeon crawl the whole time and there are no towns , which would be a nice touch . But maybe that would add too much clutter ( and a 2nd disc ) to an already great game . 5 stars !
    • 055 4  I played it and it was ok .
    • 121 4  Storyline-wise . . this game is very atmospheric and at many times , dark . I enjoyed the story and atmosphere highly , but the game seems to stretch on and on into dungeons that highly resemble the previous ones , thus making it very monotonous . The weapons configuration also is very lacking , there are many weapons and other equipment , but it really gets on your nerves and many times , is quite lame . The difficulty level , while hard , is actually very good , although I find myself constantly battling to defeat bosses , and the whole risk facto system is constantly getting on my nerves . If the developers cranked out some of the faults in this games system this would have potential to be a very great game . However , this game would be a good investment for an RPG if you are able to look past its faults . But otherwise , I would suggest ' Final Fantasy Tactics ' which is made by the same developer . . .
    • 130 4  If you want to know if this game is good or not without having to read paragraph upon paragraph just read this review . Bottem line is is that if you have some sort of Dungeon crawler fetish this is your thing . It's a dungeon crawler with heavy RPG elements and thats it . So if you like box puzzles ( many many ) and demons and such ( many many ) . Not to mention that all you ever do is do the to of the above ( no mini-games or diversion or nothing ! ) then this games for you ( only one paragraph ! ha : )
    • 143 4  This game is an excellent game all around .
    • 150 4  Just a terrible game . If you enjoy pushing boxes around for hours , by all means buy it . The gameplay consists of alternatly pushing boxes , jumping on boxes , and killing 35,000 bats and other generic monsters . Interspersed are story sequences that move the story very , very slowly . I played for about 6 hours and just couldn't take it anymore . I would literally rather be at my job , where I can at least earn money , than play this game .

  • 157 4  Vagrant Story is a great game . The graphics are probably some of the best graphics on the psx today . The battleling system is very good , although it takes some time to learn how to use magic and chaining abilities , if your more of the sports game fan like i am . The dungeon that you spend the whole game in is not that bad . The thing is though , that all the rooms look basically the same , and it is sometimes hard to remember where you have and have not been . The game is challenging , and you will find yourself in some lengthy battles with certain bosses . I would recommend not using a gameshark at about the 8 - 12% complete point , because when you get to a certain room , numbers will just start appearing on the screen taking away from your 999 mp at rapid speed . all in all Vagrant Story isn't your normal RPG , and can even be liked by sports game fans like me , who think all other RPG's stink !
    • 124 4  Vagrant Story is much more compicated then a game should be . The battle system is really complex and hard to figure out . But the storyline is awesome and the characters are wonderfully detailed . All in all it is a pretty good game , i guess .

  • 161 4  Vagrant Story is a quickie action fantasy game that allows you to play as Ashley Riot , a warrior that has lost his memory and gradually gains it back , along with certain abilities , during the game . While the story idea was good and the game moves reasonably fast for expert players , Vagrant Story turns out to be a dissappointment . Vagrant Story combines a somewhat complex fighting system with an environment meant for exploring . The player controls only Ashley throughout the game and spends most of his / her time exploring rooms for more powerful weapons , potions , and keys to other doors . After about three hours of exploring and fighting , I began to forget that there was a plot to the game . I also began to get frustrated with the fighting system that changes whenever you fight a creature . As the game is designed , you have multiple weapons , each with a different blade and hilt , which can be dissassembled , combined , assembled , etc . , to form new and more powerful weapons . Great ! But ! Depending on what you use the weapon against ( Dragons , Undead , Humans , Beasts , etc . ) , the weapon will raise in attack ability towards whatever you just attacked , but will lower in other areas . This requires that you keep multiple weapons on hand for combat with different creatures in order to have a good weapon at any moment and that you keep track of them . Another added idea was Chain idea , where you can designate three buttons on the control pad to certain abilities and , by pressing them at the appropriate time , have these certain abilities added to an attack . I won't even go into the Risk explanation of the game , which was added in to make is somewhat realistic with getting tired during a battle . If you enjoy a game where it requires you to keep track of your weapons and their abilities , this is a great game for you and offers different endings and options dependant upon how you play the game . Otherwise , like me , you will probably find yourself wondering why you are wasting your time with repetitive attacks on creatures for hours on end and end up losing the idea of the plot . The total time to complete the game is approx . 8 - 24 hours and there are no FMVs throughout . Game is on one disc but comes with a bonus disc with the demos of Legend of Mana , Threads of Fate , Chrono Cross , Front Mission 3 , SaGa Frontier , Chocobo's Dungeon 2 , and Chocobo Racing on it .
    • 061 4  The cinematic story line is a great feature , although had the producers inserted some REAL cinema cut-sceens the popularity of this game would have been through the roof . While the story is tight , getting from a to b is sometimes tedious and frustrating . The fighting style ( a plethora of different weapons with different ranges , and the chain reaction ability , specifically ) and weapons tweaking are the games best features , not to mention the bosses : Dragons , a T-Rex , a Stone Giant , and a Giant Crab ( which each take up a significant part of the screen ) just to name a few . Overall , this game is great , but seems to at times leave you in an area without directing you where to go next .
    • 111 4  I am only 3 - 4 hours into the game , yet I was instantly hooked .
    • 141 4  Amazing graphics , with easy to learn game play , and a story line seeming fit for a movie spectacular .

  • 168 4  There are some items that you buy that you feel that you wasted your money on . I've been playing the Final Fantasy games since I was 7 and I pretty much know what a good RPG game should be . In this game you assume the position of Asley , a bum with no plot of a convincible life . The story makes you feel that you're playing this to see the CG movies or fight . The enemies in this aren't even that cool and the animation is choppy . You just see the same attack move every time . Even in FF8 you got used to the characters in about 12 hours but , man , the characters are . . . you just love to hate ! ! I would recommend Final Fantasy 7 and 8 , Dragon Warrior , Teletubbies over this game . I feel like I wasted my money off of a Final Fantasy RPG stereotypical clone . If you want a good RPG or gaming experience , do not buy this unless you want to feel the great feeling that you've wasted your wallet's hide again and again for sapless RPGs .
    • 107 4  This game teaches us how great Squaresoft is . With the delay of PArasite Eve 2 I'm glad they found such a good Spring / Summertitle . Think FF8 + Parasite Eve + Chrono Triger
    • 137 4  Vagrant has the best story of all videogames i have ever played ( okay . . Metal Gear Solid was even cool ) . The battle system is excellent and the sound is perfect . . but at all the characters are the best of the game . Sidney , the so called messiah Ashley with his sad past Bardoba , the man in the background 。。ts the best game that Square has made since FF3 ( US ) . . . and perhaps their best game forever . A must buy
    • 176 4  A GoTh iNJected , maTHEeMaticaLy MoRPpheiWooRFFY deCENT into fUn . Grin and chew . . . CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP .

  • 172 4  this game was a total dissapointment to me staying in the dungeon for the praticcaly the whole game was a eyesore if anyone thinking about buying this game don't . Also it is way to easy .
    • 084 4  This game was exactly what I was looking for .

  • Con : It's an extremely dark game that mainly consists of running around in a dungeon where the view makes it difficult to see what your character is doing . Pro : The music , the dark , and espionage filled storyline create a wonderful atmosphere of mystery and fear . . the battle system is excellent , but the puzzles are the boring cube-movin ' , lever pullin ' type . It's not extremely long , so you're probably better off just renting it . . . : )
    • 103 4  OPVerall this game is good although im only 7 hours into the game but you stayin the same place all the time . Im a big fan of the ff series 5 - 8 and thought this would have been better . This game is like Granstream Saga with parasite eve and a liittle rpg involved . if you liked those games you will like this .
    • 139 4  This game is a mixed bag , full of pros and cons . It's not extremely long , so you're probably better off just renting it . . . : )
    • 154 4  awful . Absolutely awful . I am 13 and spent 2 months allowace on this . . . . the game looks great and the characters move smoothly , until you find out there are about 40 different character animations . This means that ashley does the same thing while attacking . He attempts to stab a 40 foot tall golem with a sledgehammer . Pathetic excuse of a story : play for two hours having no Idea what you're doing , and some nameless character comes up and tells you what happened . ultra repetitive gameplay : run in a dungeon and kill stuff . wwwwweeee . ' nuff said there . The programmers decided to leave out character customization . Want to be a mage ? too bad , computer says to be a fighter . don't bother . I have more fun in math class .

  • it's too action-oriented for RPG purists , and too RPG-ish for action purists . To me , it combines the best features of RPGs and action-adventure games , resulting in one of the most innovative , challenging , and gripping games I've ever been lucky enough to experience . Using manga / comic-style voice bubbles was a stroke of genius - - too often voice translation RUINS games . It's hard to believe the fading PS can produce such incredible graphics . When the Wyvern came crashing through the ceiling at the game's beginning , my heart lept . The hero , Ashley Riot , is one of the most intriguing characters ever . I was unsure until deep into the convoluted , immersive plot if Ashley's intent were for good or ill . The story is fantastic , the characters memorable , the soundtrack and sound effects atmospheric perfection , and even the dialogue is amazing . And the battle system . . . . ah , the battle system . It's a masterful blend of strategy and reflex . First you must choose the correct weapon with the correct affinity - - doing this is half the challenge . For example , you'd want to use a weapon with fire-based affinity against , say , a water elemental , AND you'd want to make sure your weapon has a high Phantom class ranking ( an elemental is considered a Phantom class creature ) , in order to have a maximum chance of inflicting a maximum amount of damage . Then , timing becomes precise as you could allegedly Chain attacks together until the end of time , although a Risk factor ( which simulates tiredness during battle ) makes this highly unlikely . Ashley also has defense abilities that could , in theory , render him impervious . . . with the right decisions and perfect timing ( and Risk allowing ) . How's that for a twist ? Add to that various spells , both offensive and defensive , and Ashley is a force to be reckoned with . Add to THAT his determined nature and hazy memory , and you have an unprecedentedly heroic character . As you wander the dungeons beneath the city of Lea Monde in pursuit of the mysterious Sydney Losstarot , Ashley will encounter dozens of creatures : bats to dragons , zombies to minotaurs , ogres to elementals , and enemy human soldiers , many of which are Ashley's match , physically and / or magically . A battle I fought against a particular dragon lasted almost thirty minutes ! But Vagrant Story has more to it than a shining battle system . The story is told through seamless cutscenes that are a Square trademark , bearing you along with revelation upon revelation . And if that's not enough , after playing through the game , you gain access to new areas , foes , and weapons - - talk about replayability ! Vagrant Story is one of those games that demands a lot of time to experience fully , and rewards without question . It has as much depth as any game I've ever played , both in terms of gameplay and story ( plus I love the fact you can name your various weapons - - watch out for the Brain Flayer ! ) . Any gamer who is looking for a fresh challenge coupled with a riveting , twist-packed plot and fabulous characters should look no further than the genre-bending Vagrant Story - - a definite highlight in the outstanding PS library .
    • 004 4  This is one of the best games I have ever played , and one of Squaresoft's best titles . This blows all other Action / RPGs out of the water . First off , the graphics are THE best the Playstation has ever seen , without a doubt . Second , the story . It is better than half of the movies at the Academy awards , ( definately better Titanic or Shakespere in Love ! ) and is cinematic all the way through . The battle system is like none before , and perfect for this game . It encourages you to play it over and over trying to beat records of time , chest percentage , etc . Zelda ? What Zelda ? Vagrant Story is THE game , and with this , Legend of Mana , Threads of Fate , and Chrono Cross ( I MUST HAVE THAT GAME ! ) this will be the best summer in Squaresoft , no Video Game History !
    • 041 4  When I first heard that Vagrant Story was reputed to be Medieval Gear Solid , I wasn't impressed , as I didn't care for Metal Gear Solid . However , after hearing some more about Vagrant's storyline , and its similarities to Parasite Eve ( my favorite PS game ever ) , I tried it out . Result ? I have a New Favorite PS Game . Gameplay-wise , Vagrant Story is a mixed bag : it's too action-oriented for RPG purists , and too RPG-ish for action purists . It has as much depth as any game I've ever played , both in terms of gameplay and story ( plus I love the fact you can name your various weapons - - watch out for the Brain Flayer ! ) . • 059 4  I decided that I needed a classic RPG to quench my thirst for gaming recently .
    • 071 4  This is without question one of the best ( if not the best ) game Square has ever made ! The storyline is involving and easy to follow and the battle system is also great.I strongly suggest you buy this game ! It's well worth whatever you pay for it .
    • 091 4  Of all the games Square has made for PS this tops them all . It has the best replay value of any game I have ever played and the story is better than that of all the new Final Fantasy games for Ps and the ones that will come out for PS2 . The game has the cool idea of being able to make your own weaons and giving your weapons class points which make them more efective against certain monsters . If you are a RPG fan and have some patitence GET IT but dont waste your money on the Final Fantasy games ( except for 7 that was okay )
    • 092 4  Looks like Square finally stopped paying too much attention to how the game looks and has focused on the game's story . This game has the most well written story that I have ever seen in my decade of game-playing ( which stems back to the Atari ) . The dialouge is beautifully written and seems to be genuine Old English scripting . The musicis kinda bad though . I really didn't care for it as it sounded more like etheral background music with no real melody line , just chording . The weapon and armor design is a nice touch too . You can make your own weapons and armor by combining blades and armor pieces to form stronger ( or in many cases weaker ) weapons . This coupled with a simple Risk system and battles become a lot of fun to try to master . This comes even more into play with bosses . The bosses in this game are very difficult , but their difficulty can be slashed if you have the right weapon to use against it . The game plays very much like the game Brandish ( for those with SNES ) . You are Ashley Riot and arein a giant maze-like area and you hack and slash your way after the evil Sydney who has kidnapped the Duke's son . You travel from area to area gaining treasures and defeating bosses and that pretty much is it . I would get the game if I were a veteran RPGer who is waiting for a game with a strong story instead of a bunch of pretty pictures then get this game .
    • 101 4  With Vagrant story you can expect to have one of the most dedicated and complete games of these last years , you wont be dissapointed even tough the game is not a traditional RPG ( interaction with people , town travelling etc . ) but one with a great mix of strategy and action . I'm kepping my fingers crossed so the good folks at Square brings Vagrant's weapons and attack systems to their up coming Final Fantasy titles . Beatiful music , characters and a exotic blend of cultures make this a must see and a masterpiece .

  • Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Okay . I have very mixed feelings regarding this game . On the one hand , the story is extremely complex , as most Squaresoft titles are . On the other hand , the battle system is just completely inane . It redefines the word overcomplicated . Essentially , all enemies are divided into 6 classes : Human , Beast , Dragon , Undead , Evil , and Phantom . When you use a weapon against a particular class of enemy , it becomes stronger toward that class , but weaker towards others . What this means in practical terms is that you will be doing a LOT of weapon switching , unless you want to end up with one weapon that has mediocre stats toward all classes . Also , there is the Chain Attack system . As you progress through the game , you learn new chain attacks , which you can assign to your controller buttons . To use a chain , you have to enter a sequence of timed button presses after your initial attack . To make matters frustrating , the timing changes based on your weapon type and the exact chain attacks you're using . Also , your character has a Risk Meter , a combination of mental and physical fatigue , which causes your accuracy and attack strength to decline as it fills up . Attacking causes it to fill up . Chain Attacks fill it up even faster . This all adds together to form the most frustrating battle system I have ever experienced . My other complaints deal mainly with character design and gameplay . The characters are designed in the weirdest outfits imaginable . They all look like extras from some bizarre S M movie . Also , there is no real interaction with other characters . All character interaction is shown through cut-scene movies . This makes the game more like an action game like Tomb Raider rather than a true RPG . Why did I give as high a rating as I did , if my opinion seems that low ? Well , the storyline is first-rate , as complex and involving as only a Squaresoft title can be . Also , the game has a very solid replay value . After completing the game once , you can start a new game with your weapons and stats intact . There are secret areas of the game you can only access after completing the game at least once . Assuming you didn't get your fill of the first game . If Square puts out a sequel , I hope they get rid of some of the more glaring flaws . My suggestion would be to get rid of the class-specific weapon upgrades and especially get rid of that @ # $ Risk Meter .
    • 001 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I've been a console RPG fan for many years now . From Dragon Warrior to Final Fantasy I have played most all of the popular games that have long been the catalysts for mass obsession . Vagrant Story is no exception to this rule . I purchased this game right as it hit the shelves , not knowing what to expect . . . but knowing that I was not to be disappointed by the divine power of Squaresoft . This is perhaps a game that could be referred to as video gaming's first successful gene splicing experiment . Combine a pinch of the dungeon roaming found in the old Zelda or Diablo games with a dash of Tomb Raider and you have the beginnings of a great game . Now , mix in one part Final Fantasy and set in a rich , dark , gothic environment . . . and voila ! . . . you have quite possibly the world's perfect video game . The battle system in Vagrant Story is like none that I have seen before . . . it is possible to target your opponents body parts separately in order to perhaps find a weakness . There are also real time functions that you learn called battle abilities which allow you to make your attacks more effective . You don't necessarily find complete weapons in this game either , you make your own . . . and then name them ! Let's not forget the monsters . . . there are more than I can count . Dragons , zombies , lizard-men . . . all of these and more haunt the complex dungeons you will explore on your quest . In fact , as an added point of challenge for the game , the weapons you use will eventually developing a liking to the flesh of the creature you most often attack and will become more effective against others of its kind . . . but beware ! . . . your weapons may become ineffective against those monsters of an opposite persuasion . In closing . . . get this game . . . period . . . no questions asked . If you can look in a mirror and say with a straight face that you are a serious console RPG fan , you have absolutely no choice . . . no . . . you owe it to yourself to give this game a try !

    • 005 4  This is my favorite video game of all time . That said , it's not for everyone . The graphics / animation are top notch , but you can certanly do better in this age of PS2 , Xbox , etc . . . The control system and interface are great but definately take some getting used to . The game uses a strange hybrid of menu driven combat , combined w / chain attacks and reaction abilities that involve split-second timing . The plot is top-notch , absolutely the most engaging story-line from any game I've ever played . It's a shame that this game never took off to reach the popularity of Squaresoft's flag ship Final Fantasy series , because it would have probably made for a much better movie . All that aside , what secured this game as my #1 favorite of all time is the totally unique character progression system . No gaining levels here , to increase your stats you simply need to locate various potions that will each give you a permanent boost of a few points to one stat . But that's just the begining , the real meat of the character progression system resides in the weapon system . There is a huge assortment of weapons in this game , from war mauls , to katanas , to cross bows and beyond , and each comes with a huge number of statistics . Each weapon can have any number of elemental strengths and weakness , as well as relative powers vs . diferent enemy types . And weapons evolve with use , so if you bust out the same trusty sword each time you come across an undead enemy , you'll soon find that blade has increased its power against that enemy class and has grown weaker vs . others . Add to this the ability to combine blades and armour and reassemble weapons at blacksmith shops throughout the game , and you've got everything you need for hours and hours of character-tweeking dorking-out time . Did i mention that if you beat the game you can start over with all of your weapons intact ? This , along with some areas only accessible on second play , give this game a lot of re-play value . OK , so like i said , it's not for everyone . . . but if you appiciate a fine plot , original game play , or an infinately tweakable progress sytem , this game won't dissapoint .
    • 008 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Wow ! . At long last my hat is off to Square . I have seen the future of Rpgs , and it is a third person view from behind . ( A cross between Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy . I was impressed by this game . If you know any of my reviews , you know I don't enjoy some of this company's other , more popular series of games . I am happy to say That Vagrant Story makes up for the inadequacies of the FF series . When you pop this game in the consol , you will discover ; a new combat system , that makes it easy to take on a very difficult set of dungeons , a system for equipping and using items that is a dream to use , lots more fun than filling materia slots . The Art , music and plot of this game are all worthy of a great Rpg . The only detractor in my mind is this : The designers of this game thought it would be neat if the charactor spoke in voice bubbles like comic book charactors . They were wrong . The baloons cover up some of the best video game art ever while the charactors are speaking . As good as this game is , I think Square could have invested in real voice , for at least part of the game . Enough for the detractors ! This game has it all , good plot , good action , frequent saves , and no bad guy , whether it's a run of the mill zombie , or a boss is too hard to kill . Hard enough , but not impossible . Hats off to whoever it was that said , Hey , if the story is good , they'll play it over and over , instead of trying to kill the same boss again and again and getting disgusted . The cobat system is different than anything you've played before , but once you're used to it , it's a dream . Keep using those healing items , there's plenty of them . This game is about paying attention and thinking as much as it is fighting . You'll get hung up on the map and the puzzles more than you will tough enemies .
    • 011 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Squaresoft is widely known to stun everyone with the unique RPG genre , and with Vagrant Story , they did it again . The game starts off with Riskbreaker Ashley Riot , a VKP ( Valendia Knight of Valendia ) . He was assigned to solve a mystery involving Sydney , a mysterious , dark person and leader of the Mullenkamp cult who starts causing havoc in the Valendia Kingdom . At the same time , the Duke of Valendia was murdered . Ashley was framed and escaped to the deserted city of Lea Monde to clear his name and find out what Sydney is up to . Like Parasite Eve , Vagrant Story concentrates on action and has the similar battle system , except with the addition of the Chain Abilities . This addition allows you to hit a target more than one time with just a simple carfully timed push of a button . Unaccurately pushing the button ends the streak . The action in this game is probably the best feature in this game . Preventing this game from being perfect is the balance of the bosses . It's like when you reach a boss , it can take one or two hits just to kill you rendering you to constantly heal over and over . And to add to that , some players may have a difficult time with the Chain Abilites ; not everyone has a good hand-to-eye coordination . Overall , this game is great , but hard at times . So I would recommend this game to people who have had experience playing Parasite Eve . The story is easy to get into , and a lot of practice is necessary if you ever want to see the conclusion of this Squaresoft near-perfect game .

    • 013 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Square outdid itself again . A few months ago they released Front Mission 3 , which I thought was great , if somewhat of a niche-game . Though not as popular as some of the more mainstream games like Final Fantasy , it had great gameplay and was loads of fun . I thought , Man , how is someone going to top this ? Well who better to do it than Square themselves . Vagrant Story is the single greatest and most complete game I have ever played , saved for one . That one game could be its brother ; Metal Gear Solid . The comparisons are extreme ; both have a very cinematic , polished feel . A great story ( better than any movie in the theater ) with unbelievable gameplay and graphics . Each gave me this feeling that it wasn't someone's plan to get rich but like an artist , painting with his soul . Just completely unbelievable . Anyone who knows a Playstation , or even knows someone who does or did , should get this game anyway possible . If not , then what in the world are you doing with a PSX ?
    • 015 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Rating says the game is good , but it's definitely not for everyone . Those who are used to the Final Fantasy series by Square will probably be disappointed by this game because , quite simply - they are of different genres . FF is a pure , solid , RPG game without a trace element of Action , Adventure , or Puzzle . Vagrant Story , on the other hand , is a combination of all 4 above genres - and the result is not only fun and entertaining , but exciting as well . Breakdown - Graphics - Absolutely beautiful detail , high polygonal characters with lush backgrounds and well-designed dungeons . It's good to see that Square does really good work with graphics even without touching CGI FMV . Lots of little graphical tweaks ( like accurate shadows , detailed faces ) make this game beautiful to watch . Best of all , all of the cut scenes are presented using in-game graphics , with almost cinematic camera shots and techniques - it feels like you're watching a movie . Music / Sound - Great for atmospherics , but nothing too memorable for me other than the intro music ( played alongside the only FMV sequence in the entire game ) . This is probably the poorest section of the game , especially given Square's reputation for hiring composers such as Nobuo Uematsu to do their wonderful orchestrated music . Storyline - Two thumbs up , the story progresses at a nice , even pace and there aren't any ridiculous twists and turns in the plotline that make it sound forced . The ending is one hell of a clincher . . . and definitely some of the clearer work that Square has done recently . Characters - Well developed , etc . etc . I like the characters . We get to know them relatively well , and any information that we don't receive isn't very important to begin with . System - This is where the game shines . The Parasite Eve style battle system , offence / defence chain abilities , and workshop ideas are all awesome . Plus , for the hardcore gamer , technicalities such as weapon vulnerability , elemental affinity , and monster type all play a role in effecting the damage you do . It's a great game . Buy it . But only if you're not one of those narrow minded people who thinks there is no Square outside of Final Fantasy .

    • 017 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) If you are even remotely considering buying this game , I urge you to do so . Or if it takes more convincing to turn you into a Vagrant , read on . . . The graphics in Vagrant Story are superb . The cinematic cutscenes are especially well done , and the voice acting is top notch . The translation of story to English is one of the better translations in an import game . The cutscenes appear when needed and flawlessly move the engrossing story along . The music is excellent , as you would expect from a Squaresoft title . If you havent bought many or any of Squaresoft's games , then rest assured , you're in for a treat , they almost always have unforgettable little music pieces here and there , and great mood setters for different areas , and Vagrant Story is no different . Whether its from the Abandoned Mines , or the Great Cathedral , you'll find yourself enjoying the music as well as the action . The story is quite involving , easily one of the year's best plots so far . Basically you play through the game as Ashley Riot ( dont you love guys named Ashley ? ) a member of an elite group of guardsmen , known collectively as the VKP . What they do , when not taking themselves too seriously , is track down doers of great evil , ( or even minor evil ) and give them a swift , but brutal tongue lashing , or , failing that , a nice duel to the death . Anyway a naughty ( and presumably evil ) man called Sydney kidnaps Duke Bardova's only young son and escapes , forcing Ashley to pursue him to a town called Lea Monde . What Ashley dosent know is that Lea Monde is one troubled city , filled with evil , and it soon becomes apparent that Sydney isnt the only evil guy around . The story runs rampant with enough conspiracies , backstabbings , plot twists and action to make even Sherlock Holmes blink . Vagrant Story also has replayability . Why play it once you've killed the Last Boss . You feel good about yourself , having killed him , why do it again ? Because you uncover more to Lea Monde the 2nd or 3rd time around . You can save after finshing it and experience the city anew , with your new weapons , armor , and most items . And you can unlock new doors that you couldnt before , find new secrets , and even uncover new areas and treasure that was never found the first trip through Lea Monde . After reading all this , you've got to ask yourself : Am I a Vagrant ?

    • 021 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I've been an FF fan for years , and never thought I'd see a better game come out , but this is it ! Good story line that doesn't get in the way of game play , well though out abilities and tricks , lots of skills to learn . Things don't pick up until you enter the city of Lea Monde , but once things get going , you'll love it ! Different from most RPG's , there is no experience point system ; rather , you pick up some combat skills from practicing other skills . You're stats grow by baby steps from finding potions or fighting bosses . The real method of growth lies in weapon development , which is done by creating or finding unique weapons , then fighting specific enemies with them . Your weapon will develop an affinity to fighting a specific type of monster , and as it grows , will be able to wipe out monsters of that type easily with enough practice . Add in a few Square Soft break arts and other tricks , your character can be very powerful ( or weak ) with the right development . One point - make your ' evil ' weapon a two-handed type , or your in big trouble in the final battle . . . Enjoy !

One point - make your ' evil ' weapon a two-handed type , or your in big trouble in the final battle . . . Enjoy !

    • 035 4  Vagrant Story comes to us from the same group of people who brought us the strategy masterpiece Final Fantasy Tactics . And like Tactics and many of Square's other games , Vagrant Story shines with a great story and superb gameplay . Before I get started in bringing out this game's high points , let me bring to light its aspects that some players might view as shortcomings . First , know that this game is complete dungeon-crawling with no towns to purchase equipment from and no people to converse freely with . But unlike some games of this type , where the only real fun thing to do is to find a rare item or encounter a boss , I found Vagrant Story's 3 - D landscapes fun to explore , and the battle system makes any enemy encounter fun and worthwhile . Also , to help break the monotony , there is the occasional challenging block puzzle to solve , in which a player moves various blocks in order to reach a certain door or treasure chest , and the cinematic cutscenes that advance the story provide entertaining intermissions . Another thing to know is that it will take a few hours to get into this game , the reason being that until you learn Chain Abilities , the battles seem awkward and tedious . Speaking of battles , Vagrant Story features a fun , yet in-depth battle system . To start , each enemy has an enemy class . They can be beast , human , dragon , undead , phantom , or evil . Each time you attack an enemy with one of your several weapons , that weapon will grow better against that enemy's class , while growing weaker against a different enemy class . For example : if you often attack wolves with your crossbow , sooner or later your crossbow will go up a point against beasts , while decreasing a point against undead . Also , there are six element affinities in which a weapon can accumulate strength , and each element is strong against another . Water extinguishes fire , air disturbs water , earth blocks air , fire melts earth , and light and dark cancel each other . So , since bats are air-based , a weapon regularly employed against these flying mammals will gradually accumulate strength in earth , making it a better weapon to use against air enemies . Then there are the Chain Abilities that I mentioned before . At a point in the game , your character will learn a few Chain Abilities . Afterwards , each battle you encounter will slowly bring him closer to learning another . Each Chain Ability has a certain effect , such as adding 10% additional damage to an attack or healing your character by 10% of the damage your attack inflicted . You assign each Chain Ability to a different button on your PlayStation controller , and you execute them after your initial attack by pressing the appropriate buttons in the proper rhythm . So , while attacking an enemy , a player can use his Chain Abilities to attack again , heal himself , and end off by poisoning the enemy . By pressing the appropriate buttons at the right time , the player can have a chain of more than 20 attacks in just one encounter with an enemy . This makes battles much quicker . Throughout the game , players will amass quite a collection of blades , grips , gems , armor , and shields , which can be combined to create different and better weapons , armor , and shields . Combine a blade with another blade to create a more powerful blade ; snap on a grip that may make it even more powerful ; place in a gem or two to improve its attack against certain enemy classes and elements ; and behold ! You have a unique , customized weapon , and you can even name it . With great gameplay , outstanding grpahics and animation , a fitting soundtrack , and a good , though complex story , Vagrant Story turns out to be one of Square's best titles and among my top ten favorites on the Playstation .
    • 049 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) To avoid writing a 15 page in-depth review , I'll keep it super simple . If you like RPGs with and excellent story line , tons of weapon combinations , a fun & ground-breaking combat system , dark humor and programming that actually rewards you for playing through several times . . . . . get this game . Don't have a PS1 ? PS2 ? Doggone it , Square ! Let's have a Vagrant Story for PS3 .
    • 051 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) While I would have agreed with most negative / melancholy reviews about this game when I originally recieved it , I must say that many years later with nothing to do I picked this game back up and inserted it . Having beat the game the first time and now on my second playthrough ( tragically my save file from the first game is long gone ) I'm going to have to say that this is trully a great game . Though I could agree that a quick menu to changing weapons would have been a nice addition , I spend sooooo much time in the menu just to customize my hero to my specs I never noticed . This is not the standared RPG that FF7 presents nor is it anything like that of Diablo . Born from the mistakes of Chocobo's Dungeon , Parasite eve ( 1& 2 ) and ofcoarse the infamously terrible Eheirgiez Dungeon ( I spelled it wrong and I don't care ) This game has managed to take what was good from all those games and build off it . While Customization abounds in this game , if you lack either the intelligence or the patience to play this game then I suggest you go back to a conventional RPG and forget you ever heard about this . While what may seem like nothing but tedious gameplay , try putting this on par of a beginers experience of D & D your first play through . ( because I can gaurantee that after your first run , you'll know exactly what to expect on any upcomming situation . )

    • 056 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Vagrant Story is one of those games you keep coming back to , no matter how ticked at it you get . I suspect VS may get overlooked in the summer RPG rush , but I certainly hope it gets the attention it deserves . Part Tomb Raider , part Parasite Eve and part Metal Gear Solid , VS is brought to you from the team that brought you Final Fantasy Tactics and it shows . The storyline is complex and engaging , the combat system has depth that has to be seen to be believed and the amount of time the game will suck up is incredible . Even more than Parasite Eve , VS is a completely cinematic experience , from the opening shots to the last crash . If you haven't found yourself enjoying the heavy combat-based games Squaresoft has released over the last year ( FFT and Front Mission 3 ) then you may want to gloss over VS , or at least rent it first . Any true RPG fan , though , this is one game you need to pick up .

    • 063 4  A most impressive game Vagrant Story has proven to be . I have been a strict FF fan , but this game had completely blown me away . It's gothic atmosphere and most intelligent dialogue keeps one eager to see where this doorway leads to . The battle system is also unique , and strategies vary from different opponents , which allow you to keep on your toes . The battle system is very realistic and quite impressive compared to the constant boxes in the FF series . ( Not that I have anything against it . ) I have also fallen for the soundtrack . It's absolutely stunning and fits perfectly with the enviroment and characters of Vagrant Story . Never have I been so satisfied with a game as this one . And the replay value is also another thing to consider . Some areas you are unable to access on the first play , but on the second play , it enables you to enter those areas which were unavailable during the first play . It's as much fun on the second play as it is the first . Seeing such characters act through their amazing and twisted tale has the same impact on me as it did when I began the game . The characters are so well developed yet leaving enough room for your imagination to wander . Each character has a different trait that allows them to boldly stand out and take equal parts of the spotlight as this outstanding story unfolds . It's hard not to become attached to the characters . . . This game is most definitely worth playing again and again , for it is one of the most amazing games I have ever gone through . The only thing that disappointed me , was that it had to end .
    • 066 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This game is very fun and the battle system is one of the best I've ever seen .
    • 070 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This is without question one of the best ( if not the best ) game Square has ever made ! The storyline is involving and easy to follow and the battle system is also great.I strongly suggest you buy this game ! It's well worth whatever you pay for it .
    • 086 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Square has always been known to develop quality titles and Vagrant Story proves its still one of the best in the game industry .
    • 088 4  Ok . I played this game when it originally came out and sold it back because my annoying roomate kept bothering me , hence hindering my playing time with it . So I stopped . I bought the game from Amazon a year ago and have picked it up recently . This game has very innovative character sketches which are among the best I've seen in any game . Art is the correct word for it along with a great / creepy story . These are only details though . The first time I played it , I didn't fully understand the weapon system which is the integral meat and potatoes in this game . If you don't align separate weapons to specific Affinities / Enemy Classes , you will not get far at all . You will find yourself battling enemy bosses and only blasting single HPs of damage due to mal-alignment of weapons . It is trial and error . It is frustrating . Playing it now is REWARDING knowing this information . VS is a dungeon crawler no doubt , but it is also a quest to find specific creatures that will help create a devious arsenal of weapons that will only progress Ashley further in the game . This aspect of the game is a steep learning curve for newbies but it is rewarding when the weapons get stronger . My ranking of Square games ( that I've played ) : 1 . FFVII 2 . Front Mission 3 ( A MUST OWN ! ) 3 . Vagrant Story
    • 094 4  This game is AWESOME ! I am a serious RPG gamer , and I really think this game is way better than the Final Fantasies . ( not to say the FF's aren't all masterpieces , mind you ! ) VS is the best game Square has ever made in my opinion . First off , no more random battles ! All the enemies are visible on screen . Playing games like LoD and Chrono Cross I got so annoyed at seeing the screen fade into a battle. In VS , you see the enemy and whack the enemy. After beating a certain boss , you get the power to string attacks together using battle abilities . The battle abilities take time to master , but add so much to the over-all effectiveness of Ashley's strikes that they are definetly worth the effort . The same goes for the defense abilities . They allow you to limit the damage taken by foes ' attacks . As you've probably already heard the graphics of this game are wonderful . The plot scenes blend in perfectly and don't make the game look like Roger Rabbit as did the CG sequences of FF8 . Like everything , VS does have it's disadvantages . The dark rooms of Lea ' Monde do get a bit tiresome . Also , the block puzzles are quite annoying . These things can be overlooked though . The superb plot and gameplay more than make up for bothersome little quirks like the two mentioned above . All in all VS is a legend in its on time , sure to transport the gamer playing it to the haunted halls of Lea ' Monde and bring them back with a feeling of awe .
    • 096 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This game is a must have for any FF.VII / VIII player . it plays as good as either game but you only control one player . This allows more control over the player with a greater choice of actions and monsters . Amazing graphics and gameplay . A Must Have !
    • 098 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Seriously ! I do !
    • 100 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) With Vagrant story you can expect to have one of the most dedicated and complete games of these last years , you wont be dissapointed even tough the game is not a traditional RPG ( interaction with people , town travelling etc . ) but one with a great mix of strategy and action . I'm kepping my fingers crossed so the good folks at Square brings Vagrant's weapons and attack systems to their up coming Final Fantasy titles . Beatiful music , characters and a exotic blend of cultures make this a must see and a masterpiece .
    • 106 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This game teaches us how great Squaresoft is . With the delay of PArasite Eve 2 I'm glad they found such a good Spring / Summertitle . Think FF8 + Parasite Eve + Chrono Triger
    • 108 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) 1 word-Amazing ! Vagrant Story is truly one of the best games Squaresoft has created . With great control , sound , graphics , and fun factor , this is truly worth buying . A true medieval time with sorcery of great power !
    • 112 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Vagrant Story is a great game . The graphics are pretty good and the look of the game is nice . The battle system is much like Parasite Eve's battle system , which I like . The plot is great and if you like Square then this is definitely a game to buy .
    • 114 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Okay .

    • 117 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) The biggest problem with FF7 is that Square has never been able to top it , and Vagrant Story is no exception . Along with FF8 , Xenogears etc , it is a good game , capable of keeping the player amused for hours , but it's not a GREAT game , it just doesn't go that extra mile . After walking through dungeons for an hour I was reminded of a boring game of D D after the DM has run out of ideas . It does get a little samey . There isn't a very wide variety of foes to battle , and it is easy to confuse rooms as they get quite similar . On the plus side though the graphics are detailed and well drawn , the scrolling is smooth ( no jumpy screen rotating like Xenogears ) , and the puzzles are a nice touch . The story is the same old stuff we're used to . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . , but it isn't by any means boring . The battles are easy to get the hang of , the magic is simple to use and organize , and it seems that there's a new weapon around every corner . But if constant battles and long stretches of no story bore you then maybe you should skip this game .

    • 146 4  this is undoubtedly one of the best games for PSX yet . every intricacy , every mystery , everything short of the game bespeaks of something wonderful . yet what i am about to suggest may seem contrary to the above depiction . this review will be passively helpful at best for most gamers . for those few of you who share some sentiments as myself , beware : this game represents the most complete and utter deviation from traditional RPGs ever . i managed to play for a few hours without buying a copy , and i am all the much more glad about it . between Phantasy Star III and FFVIII ( the first and as of yet last RPGs i have played ) , there as followed a logical pattern among the myriad games i have played . all that i truly have to offer is the following : if you appreciate the turn-based and command-entry oriented systems of more traditional RPGs , play this game before you buy it . if , however , you find yourself appealed to the action / RPG genre which is currently emerging with great rapidity , then this is the game for you .
    • 147 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I give my props for coming up with an excellent villian . ( Best one since Sephiroth ) The battle is decent since you dont have to wait for a time bar to fill . The worst thing is unlike FF7 , is that you stay in one city for the entire game . The graphics are not all that great either . If your one that likes games that you have to go to other cities this isnt for you . I am also very disapointed in the story line . The bosses were way to easy . And anyway the puzzles are kinda lame to . If you like games that have very easy enemies and like staying in one place this is for you .

    • 162 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I loved this game . It had all the characteristics of FF and more . The graphics weren't as good as FF , but the creatures were amazing and so was the plot . I think everyone there should buy this viddeo game it's so cool !
    • 166 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I rented this game after stumbling upon the squaresoft sign at blockbuster . . . . i was dissapointed .
    • 169 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I can't believe Square Soft put out a game with game play and a storyline as lame as Vagrant Story .

  • Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Recently on G4 Tech TV I was watching Filter , and they were counting down the top 10 underrated games of all time , and to my amazement and joy , Vagrant Story was rated the #1 most underrated game ever .
    • 032 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Recently on G4 Tech TV I was watching Filter , and they were counting down the top 10 underrated games of all time , and to my amazement and joy , Vagrant Story was rated the #1 most underrated game ever . • 040 4  For me this is easily the best game on playstation . Though we have moved on to the next generation of videogaming , it is hard to not go back to this game . The story is deep , the game mechanics are genius and the graphics out do all other psx games out there . This game differs from your standard rpg in sense of how the game is played . There is no leveling up , no towns to visit , or world map to explore . Also the fighting system allows you to have total control . Knowing your opponent is key to beating them . The enemy is divided into classes and you must fight according to their strengths and weaknesses . For ex . if your opponent is a dragon you will have to beat through their tough scales or find a way around them and find a weak point . The enemies aren't your average cannon fodder either . They hit and run , cast spells and play keep away . They will draw into a corner and gang up on you or get you in the open area for an ambush . With enemies that actually use brains and brawn you have to be prepared . This is where the game shines . The weapon and attack system . You start with your basic weapons and armor . As you progress you pick up better stuff and eventually be able to make new weapons and armor . Combining your old stuff you can literally make a new item . I've spent hours combining weapons and armor . Realistically as you use weapons and as your armor takes damage it loses its ' strength . At the shops you can also make repairs to your inventory . The battle sysstem is tedious but fun once you get the hang of it . You draw your weapon and a sphere surrounds you . Depending on distance and SIZE of enemies and the range of your weapon you can target body parts . Taking out legs can slow and in some cases immobilize the enemy . Warning this does work both ways so protect yourself . You can cast spells on the fly by use of a quick pop up menu activated by pressing a few buttons . Also as you defeat more enemies you gain break arts , attack and defensive draws that will keep you alive in close battles . My only complaint is that this game is not for everyone . Many will get bored with the slow beginning or find the weapon system to complex to get involved . Most of all that there is no voice acting . I personally favor the text reading but most will find that outdated . In any case this game is hard to fault once you really get involved and is hard to put down . It never got the publicity it deserved , so few will tell you that they have heard of the game . But do not let that discourage you by any means . If you can find a copy get it . If you have the patients to get through the first hour for mainly learning the gameplay mechanics you will not be disappointed .
    • 072 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) I'd like to start off by saying that I came dangerously close to avoiding this game after reading some of the reviews found on these very pages . This is the greatest game to come out on the playstation for a while now . The graphics are superb , with some of the best lighting effects I've seen on the playstation . The general style serves well to enhance the gothic feeling of the tiltle . The sound is simply amazing . . . . . . . . period . But the two areas where this game outshines the rest are gameplay and replay value . ( The battle system is the best in any console game I've seen , with never a dull fight ) . There have been some complaints about overly complex menu-systems , but even if this were true , the clever shortcut menu will work well for you . Some have said the game is too short . . . It took me a good 25 hours , AND the replay value is off the chart due to outstanding record-keeping with a few ingenious incentives added in . . . Basically it comes down to this : If you own a playstation and have a concentration span beyond that of the average 10 - year-old , buy this game today !

    • 155 4  okay the graphics are stunning and about as good as the humble ps1 is going to get but I've got quite a few criticisms of this game so here goes : 1 ) Its hard to know what you're supposed to be doing half of the time so a lot of the gameplay is spent running around doing nothing . 2 ) The combat is ok , but it can be VERY annoying a lot of the time due to the ' affinities ' of weapons and the ' risk ' system . 3 ) Weapons and affinities are a good idea , but the way they are implemented is dreadful . I found it infuriating . 4 ) The weapon creation system is appaling and it is almost impossible to find a combination that does anything . And when it does there is no way of checking so it ends up just as a ( bad ) time wasting issue . 5 ) The story is okay but its hard to get a feel for the characters and get involved with the story as in mgs and ff games . Overall , I wouldn't buy this game ( . . . ) .
    • 160 4  I hardly even know where to begin when it comes to an overrated game that turns out to collect dust in my room . I bought Vagrant Story over a year ago . Tried it , like the battle system , and then found myself hating it . The game play goes as follows : You start in a dungeon . . . there are cut scenes from time to time , but none of them make any sense . . . you run around by monsters and fight . You see the monsters as you are fighting them as there are no random battles . A menu pops up after you click near a monster such as , Head : 0 , 100% , Right Leg : 2 , 85% and so on . From there you choose which part of the body you want to attack . Sometimes you make NO hit points against the monsters because you have to work up your weapons for each type of monster . And it is impossible to make a master weapon against all monsters . More than one weapon has to be leveled up for different monsters , and many times weapons have to be changed in midst battle which is annoying . The other complaint I had in this game is that the only way you can heal yourself is either finding a save point or using a curing item . This doesn't sound so bad , but curing items CANNOT be purchased . Instead they only can be found fighting monsters . I never seemed to have enough curing items . By the end of the game , things still didn't seem to make sense . The conclusions were unsatisfying and overall pain in the neck . The last complaint I have of this game is the feeling I got from playing it . The color scheme is bad . Everything was shades of brown or blacks and occasional greens and reds . It was a depressing feel to it , and it seemed like I never saw the light in that game . However , I can still give this game some credit . I believe that it was an attempt of a good thing . There were bad qualities about it that if only fixed a little , this game could've been great . The battle system was actually fun at times , but when things got tough and a new type of monster approached , it took way too long to level up a weapon . I thought for its time , the cut scenes looked nice . There are no special movies throughout the game , just a short one as an intro before you start your game up . It is possible to enjoy this game . I found myself struggling through it , but I knew a couple who actually half ways liked it . It isn't a masterpiece in my eyes , but it had potential I think that didn't see the light of day . Pros : Innovative battle system Well done cut scenes for its time New Game Plus + feature Cons : Dull game , hardly any change of scenery besides dungeons and boxes Confusing Plot - ( yet it was deep ) Bad color scheme : browns , browns , tans , green , and more browns Annoying weapon level up system Estimated time to complete game in a quicker runthrough : 20 - 30 hours . Detailed gameplay estimated time to complete : 30 - 50 hours .

  • Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) This game is about to get a lot of attention , more attention than it's had in the years since its Spring 2000 US release .
    • 019 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) Graphic : Excellent , the best you can get with Playstation right now . Comparable to FF7 series and on . You can easily make out the character's faces and overall shape . Gameplay : Excellent , a little bit hard to get used to ( if you play Parappa the Rapper , you will feel like home with the combo system ) . You have to press at certain pre-determined time in order to chain your attacks . The most innovative feature is RISK which basically measures how tired your hero has become , the higher the RISK , the worse the shape of your hero ( i.e . receives more damage than usual , can't aim accurately , etc ) . Storyline : OK , but not great . Usual good vs . evil sort of thing . Control : Tight and precise . The movement resembles the smooth movement in MGS and Soul Reaver . You can jump , run and rotate the camera 360 degrees without any difficulty . It even allows you to get 1st person view if you press start , and you can see the detail of your enemies ' faces if you stand close enough which is very cool . Weapon Armor System : Cool . You can blend different types of weapons and armors in hope of better ones i.e . weapon A + weapon B - weapon C , also you can also do weapon A + armor B - ? So there is this little ' chemistry ' in creating your ultimate weapon set . Each part of your body ( head , right arm , left arm , body , legs ) wears different armor sets and they all have their own statistics which will affect the result of attack on a particular body part . It's your decision when it comes to which body part is more important to be protected . Now the quirks : - Level up effect is RANDOM , if you drink a certain potion let's say for HP-up , it will be between + 1 HP to + 4 HP . Also , whenever you defeat a boss , you are presented with a roulette system for attribute level up ( e.g . INT + 1 , INT + 4 , HP + 4 , MAG + 1 , etc ) . I don't think this is interesting at all considering all the hardwork you have done to attain those level-ups and be rewarded randomly . This reminds me of another great game Baldur's Gate which also exhibits this quirk , i.e . random bonus points for level up . This is the only reason I give it a four star because it's just plain annoying . - Most of your explorations are dungeon based ( although the dungeon is beautifully made ) , I have to admit that it is an eyesore to be in dungeon most of the time . If you play a lot of Diablo , Soul Reaver , Duke Nukem and the sort of dungeon oriented games , I don't think this is a problem . Overall , a great game outside the sphere of FF series .

    • 026 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) The perfect game except for Legend Of Dragoon and maybe Chrono Cross when it comes out .

    • 151 4  Guys , do yourself and favor and DO NOT get this game . This is what you do . . . . CONSTANTLY running around in a very large and tedious dungeon while pushing boxes , killing bats , solving little puzzles , etc ! There is absolutely no fun in this game . You are in the SAME dungeon practically the whole game . How is this an rpg ? ? ? ? It ISNT ! Wheres the exploration ? Your in the same place all the time . Wheres the variety ? Same monsters , same areas , same same same ! The only good thing about this game is the cool scene at the beginning of the game , and thats it ! Please Please , by all means do not buy this game . You will maybe play it for an hour or two and never play it again . Trust me
    • 158 4  This review is from : Vagrant Story ( Video Game ) HI , I fell for the hype of the game , I thought it would be like FF8 but with a game play like Tomb Raider and Zelda . I was correct in that was how the game played . BUT , the graphix in the game were not that great at ALL . . . . NOT what I had expected . They were NOT CLOSE to as clear and fluid as Tomb Raider or other games like that . I LIKE to play games that have action right off the bat . ANYWAYS , I bought the game and went to a friends house to play it , with many other gamers . We stuck it into the psx and expected the best . After 2 hours or more of playing we fought a LAME dragon ( WEAK ) and a couple bats and a knight or 2 . We were like ( OHHH WOW its battle system is like Parasite Eve ) too bad the graphix stink compared to those of PE . And we could select parts of the body to attack . I was like YESSSS gonna have some fun . Attack the legs , and they simply die after some hits , attack the arms and they simply die . . . . etc . . . . WEAK is all I have to say , they dont fall off , effect the monsters fighting at ALL . No blood , etc . Anyways I WAS LET DOWN . I went and returned the game the very next day and bought Saga Frontier 2 . Was MUCH more happy with it . . . . Alright happy gameing and please look before you buy .
