Rogue Galaxy

  • 008 4  Rogue Galaxy has been one of 2007 ' s top rated role playing games and on reflection the reasons for this are obvious . This is a game with a well developed story line that centers on two 17 year olds . One is Jaster Rogue , raised by a priest on the planet Rosa and hungry for a life among the stars - something almost impossible in the political clime of that part of the universe . The other is Kisala , been raised as the daughter of a space pirate who is seeking some of known space's most important treasures . Neither , of course , is what they seem . When a unexpected series of events catapults Jaster in with the pirates , the two are off on a wild adventure that involves 5 worlds , countless secrets and the discovery of who each of them really is . With them is a series of companions , each with their own characters and history . While dialog is never the strength of a console game , one of Rogue Galaxy's strengths is the quality of its character development . The worlds the game takes place in are well-defined desert , jungle , industrial and technological worlds filled with many NPC's and the usual cast of Johnny one liners . Graphics are neatly done without too much dependence on CGI ( which means that there's plenty of room on the DVD for voice and story ) . Clues and treasures abound . Movement is three dimensional so there are both story line and battle athletics ( jump on the roof of a trolley and ride it to a treasure box sort of thing ) . Artistic design is a strong element in the game - another important factor in its attractiveness to a player . In short , the worlds of Rogue Galaxy are worlds that you will want to adventure in . And take a bit of time looking around , as well . The battle system is fairly simple - run around a ` dungeon ' , get discovered by monsters , and beat them senseless . Many of the monsters require jumping on them , shooting them with a special weapon , or using a special technique . There is nothing that can't be managed with careful leveling up and RPG ingenuity . Often you will have the option of avoiding a fight . In fact you should pace yourself carefully or you may cause yourself more difficulties than you would expect . This doesn't mean that you can get through without a lot of slaughter , but that , if you really don't care about having Kisala's bathing suit you can limit yourself to needful violence . Needless to say I'm a compulsive , so that by the end of the game I was more than a little sword slap happy . In fact , this is one of the game's defects - the battle system isn't rich enough to support long killing for stats runs . The after games extras are weak dungeon deep dives . I hate to admit it , but Kisala's bathing suit wasn't worth the effort . On the other hand the weapon system , which involves combining different weapons to get new ones is fun , although the results are a bit less predictable than you might want . In addition there is a whole system involving laying out the pieces of a factory and running raw materials down assembly lines . To get all kinds of goodies . This really is a compulsive's delight . Thus , items and weapons are an active part of the game . Yet another plus for Rogue Galaxy . If you are compulsive , expect several hundred hours of play . Or expect to play through the game several times to get all the twists and turns . Yes , a good strategy guide is a necessity , and maybe a couple visits to online resources . This has been a good year for RPG's that Rogue Galaxy is one of the outstanding ones .
    • 020 4  For all the hype on the review sites surrounding this game , I must say , I was disappointed . The combat system is unoriginal and frankly broken . . . it feels like micromanaging a button-masher . . . and that is just NOT FUN . The story , while intriguing so far , just takes too darn long to advance to be worth the time . . . five hours in and I just made it out of the first dungeon . This brings up another point - the difficulty of this game is unrealistic and honestly a bit cruel . I thought the idea was to make a game challenging , but fun to play - to provide the gamer with an incentive to play through the entire game so that the art designers , coders , managers , etc . . . who worked on the game feel like they did good work that millions of people are appreciating . With a game this frustratingly difficult to advance - even to the second dungeon - I don't have much incentive to finish it . . . especially when there are better PS2 RPGs around ( e.x . Persona 3 ) . Example . . . the limit to the number of heal potions one can carry is 50 . Now , when I fought the most recent boss , all 50 heal potions were used to finally win . Now . . . for goodness sakes Sony . . . throw us less talented gamers a bone will ya ? Either make stronger health potions that are cheaper to obtain or give me stronger characters . . . but don't force me to blow 90% of whatever money I have saved in the game to buy an ungodly amount of health potions . . . it's just stupid , and vastly annoying . So . . . all told , I can only give this game 3 stars - pitty too since it was so highly anticipated .
    • 058 4  I really liked this game , honestly At first I wasn't blown away and they tutor you immediately as to the stying's of this game , the fighting is sorta like final fantasy dierge of cerbus . its sword & gun , etc . it's not window prompts ! very unusual and i like that . the over all feel of the game is closest to chrono cross ( many characters , varients , etc look design . . feel ) along with a music score close to what you might hear in xenosaga . Its one of the few games that have ever surprized me and kept me intrested to keep playing it for more that just a day , in fact i actually needed a break ! the language is mild so its okay for 13 and up , and the actions not gory . Over all I think this game fell through the cracks , its something I hadn't heard of and it was honestly on clearance at my job and I took a chance thinking wow , you know its only a couple of dollars if i didn't like it I wouldn't be too bummed . This game if you buy it , play it whatever . . . you'll see what I am talking about that people put alot into this game and I can't believe it didn't get huge hype . lastly , its got voice acting which actually isn't bad . . . the further along and this is the only con i thought . . . the acting gets a little mellow dramatic .
    • 066 4  I've played 60 hours . . . The good : The game started out great , visual effect is awesome ! ! ! The voice acting in this game is excellent , especially Kisala , Zegram and Deego . The bad : The powerful weapons are too easy to get , in Chap .7 you can get probably the third powerful weapon that Jaster can get , the earthshaker , and after that the game became too boring and too easy , all bosses and hunts can be killed quickly in 1 - 2 minutes with ( just buff up and illusion sword , it's boring ! ) , but all random encouters are still very tough to kill , you have to spam magic . The random encouter rate is too high ! ! ! ! ! Coupled with extremely long dungeon it's a pain in the butt . A few steps there is a fight ? ? ? I am so sick of it I just run away all the way . There is no non-encouter item you can equip , also . It's very annoying that the characters keep asking you Are we on the right path ? Of course we are ! The biggest problem , besides the too-frequent encounter rate and too-long dungeon , is the battle system . It turned into 2 ways in the middle of the game : spam illusion sword in boss fight and spam magic in normal fight , and trust me you will keep pressing the triangle button : ) The story line is ok , I just don't understand why Jaster can't speak like a normal person , he keeps asking super stupid questions but not use his brain thinking , Zegram is more like a real person . And I've never used Simon , Steve and the pathetic blue little being except the final fight . There is no story for them . Overall you will get bored in this game .
    • 068 4  Rogue Galaxy is a fun game . It has a high replay rate . The leveling system is hard to get but not impossable to get to the highest lever . Pro : random battles that are a good way to get items for the Revelation Flow for each character . Lots of hidden quest . A good plot twist in the middle of the game . Good amount of one-on-one battles Challagens battles that give you rare items . Good level desings . Cons : Some parts the stoory is slow . Some long levels that are only good for leveling up an getting rare items .
    • 087 4  Anyone who plays RPGs will find many of the story lines in Rogue Galaxy predictable but the characters are still interesting and likable . Several of the side quests can be addictive , especially the Insectron and Toady / weapon upgrades . The graphics are very pretty and the voice acting is good . Overall , I thought that game was fun - I even finished the bonus dungeon after beating the game and found all the characters ' outfits . An attractive , entertaining game with easy controls that doesn't have long loading times . Definitely worth purchasing .
    • 122 4  I would like to be able to review this game but it does not play . I assume this is due to a faulty press when manufacturing the disc . So be aware when buying you too may end up with one that does not play . All I can say is great cover shame no game

  • 034 4  It is not hard to find the blatant similarities between Rogue Galaxly and Final Fantasy XII - both boasted huge universe to explore and quick pace action in a traditional RPG setting . However , Rogue Galaxy was more than that - it further include elements like Pokemon , Skies of Arcadia , Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts . All those similarities could have made it a great game if mastered skilfully but Rogue Galaxy failed to accomplish that . The game started off pretty well . However , once it introduced its Revelation system , it is not hard to link this with FF XII's License Board . However , there was enhancement - you can deploy your new skills immediately without saving up more cash to buy it , which is a huge improvement . Then later you have the Insector side quest , which basically is extremely similar to Monster Hunter and probably more so for Pokemon . This is when you start think of how much originality does the game have ? Space pirate RPGs - the most two notable ones are FF XII and Skies of Arcadia . Hm bounty hunting ? Both checked for the other two games . A central hero looking for expansion of horizon in the starry oceans ? Hm checked for both other games . Low HP with levelling up but huge damage from random enemies . . . hm not quite so for the other two games but wait , isn't that Dragon Quest ( also by Level 5 ) ? Change of costume . . . that sounds like an expansion of Dragon Quest ( anybody remember Jessica's outfits ? ) . Factory fusing new items and then available for sale - sounds like a mix of Dragon Quest's alchemy pot plus FF XII selling hard to find items to lure new items out from shops . So what's left of the game in terms of originality . . . really not much . It still could be a good game if those aspects were exercised skilfully . However , there are quite a number of annoying factors that really taxed your game experience . For example , low HP but huge damage will only work in turn based RPG cos you can employ strategies but in an action battle system , all you can do is to use up your potions and resurrection items cos before you know , two hits your character is dead . Also there is no healing spells and resurrection spells . So stocking up healing items is essential cos you party can get wiped out in 2 seconds if you are not paying enough attention . Another annoying aspect is the shifting of sub-weapons whenever you encounter enemies with force field barriers . This is especially annoying when you want to level up your new sub weapon only to find out that you have to switch back to yoru barrier break weapon which only does 0 damage and will run out of bullets in 4 shots . So if you missed , you have to wait for 10 minutes before it is recharged and by that time you'd have used up most of your healing items to keep your party alive because of continuous pounding from the invincible enemies . Also there are a lot of useless characters that look tough but that's all . This is especially for the Deego dog . I think a chiwahwah can fight even better than he does . He is slow and low in defense . Two hit he is dead and sometimes you just want to leave him lying there dead to save up your healing items . And all those shouting and yelling during battles by different characters are particularly annoying . Especially when you need to craw through a long dungeon . They keep on yelling Jaster ! . You can turn off the chatting in the dungeon but not during battles . And also there are characters that if you want a good challenge , use them as your controlled character - Yes I'm talking about Simon , who only do 2 hits and then it runs out of action point and just need to stand there all the time . Crawling dungeons is another hassle . They are long ! Ok long dungeon is still ok but they recycle the polygons so much that you can only note the difference in areas by their colours and sometimes you don't even know what you are doing . You just feel like you are running in circles and then suddenly a new save point shows up and you know you are in a new area . The Twin Tower is the worst because after you finished the first one like after 10 hours of running around , you'll need to do it again to clear it another to move on . When you are looking at the same polygons again and again for 60 hours , the beauty becomes a nuisance . However , although there were so many flaws in the game , the graphics were pretty ( except for the dumb look of the lead character ) , the cut scenes were well done and the music was good . They can be said as the saving grace of the game , but still the flaws overshadowed the good parts of the game . Wanted to give it 2.5 but there is no such option .
    • 077 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I recommend this to any and all RPG fans out there who need something to spice up their collections . Interesting characters and a great storyline put this at the forefront of the RPG genre on the PS2 . It also has great graphics and plenty of things to do on the side from the main quest . This game will keep you busy for a while and its has plenty of replay value . There was even an entire new world added to the US version ! Dont miss out on this because this is sure to be one of the last great games for the PS2 . This is like a mix between Breath of Fire and Skies of Arcadia . ( Which are two great games by the way ) This was also made by the same team who created the awsome Dark Cloud series . Buy this game and I promise you will not regret it !

    • 083 4  When I quit , I'd played over seven hours and had made it to the third planet . To this point the game is totally linear . . . no side quests or puzzles at all . Simply go * here * and accomplish * this * task , so you can then go * there * and accomplish * that * task , followed by a boss fight . To this point you can't choose your own destination or even your own party ; it's preselected and unchangeable . This isn't an RPG , it's a rail shooter with an inventory system . What this game reminds me of is La Pucelle : Tactics ' inventory / combining system , grafted onto the Taris portion of Knights of the Old Republic . Only , take out everything that made KotOR interesting . No good / evil choices , no lightsabers , no optional adventures , just a lot of running around trying to get offplanet . The graphics are great and very stylish . The hero , Jaster , is a fairly typical example of the Young SciFi Hero ; hand him a lightsaber and you wouldn't know him from Luke Skywalker . Some of the other characters are irritating ( I have a low tolerance for that auld Scottish brogue , laddie ) , but Kisala makes up for that with some of the best lines in the game . It has some nice graphics , good characters , and an interesting inventory mechanic . If only somebody had written a fun RPG to go with it . EDIT : Rereading my own review , I guess I wasn't clear about the linearity of the game . My point is that there's no role-playing here ; calling Rogue Galaxy a RPG is a misnomer . There's no choice of route , of party composition , of character progression , or even of DIALOGUE . Yes , the Revelation Flow is an interesting mechanic , but progression through it depends more on treasure drops than on any role-playing . This is more like Shadow of the Colossus or Onimusha than KotOR or Disgaea . It's an action / adventure game , it's NOT an RPG .

  • 085 4  Awesome product ! I got what i ordered for . I was surprised that one of the clips within the case holding the manual of the game came of but , am not very picky with that as long as the game works and has no scratches . All-in-all Great product I would order again in the future . Thanks ^ _ ^
    • 064 4  this was a fun game . top 5 for my favorites . good storyline and good battle system , the weopon system was awesome . All around good game
    • 099 4  game over all seems fairly good tho the time it takes sometimes to get around and acomplish things tends to make the game long . so if you have time and want a decent rpg go for it .
    • 126 4  The product I received was as described ! New condition , and unused . I received the item in a timley manner .

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) . . . just isn't the same , but that's not to say that Rogue Galaxy isn't solid . It's just that liked the original Dark Cloud , and was a HUGE fan of Dark Cloud 2 , so naturally , I view this game ( which surely is from the same developers , judging from the gameplay ) with a more critical eye.Thankfully , though , Rogue Galaxy does deliver the goods , ultimately , although there are many flaws with the presentation and gameplay . If the option was present , I would rate it 3.5 stars overall , but I can't call it 4 stars , and I refuse to submit to grade inflation . Let's begin with the good , of which there is a healthy amount . First , RG is very nice to look at . I was skeptical of the cel-shading mixed with polygonal effects , and the initial game was less than stellar ( the cel-shading look a bit out-of-place against the plain brown backdrop of the desert ) , but once the characters appear in cities , in jungles , etc . , I love the look . The backgrounds are colorful and detailed , and the characters look pretty good against them , particularly when there is a lot going on . The fighting is standard Dark Cloud - characters bash on enemies until they are defeated , occasionally guarding against attacks . I was pleased with the addition of abilities ( such as spells which hit all enemies - more on this later ) , and the enemies are of a pretty substantial difficulty ( with some being out-of-this-world difficult ) . Guarding is more useless than in the previous DC games ; you will still take fair damage , and your guard is broken often , many times resulting in combos which leave you . . . dead . But all in all , I enjoy the fighting , if only because the system is slightly broken . The game is long - if one goes through each of the subquests ( of which there are many ) , you will easily reach 70 hours of gameplay , without including the massive levelling which is often necessary to progress . Some of the minigames are pretty fun - I enjoy the Insector Tournament ( essentially , a cock-fighting tourney where you raise bugs to fight in an arena ) , although I dislike the Factory ( read Item Creation ) mode - it is very tedious . Weapon advancement is . . . interesting . I'm not as much a fan as some of the reviewers here ( as it pales to the weapon creation in DC2 , which was incredibly fun and extensive ) , but it's not bad . More fun is the Revelation map . Reminiscent of the sphere grid in Final Fantasy X , each character has a map which can be filled out to obtain bonuses and special attacks . The catch ? One must find items to place in the Revelation map , and some of the items are difficult to obtain , to say the least . It is always fun after battle ( or opening a treasure chest ) to see if any of the obtained items will net a new ability in the grid . However , there is much bad about this game . First , the characters move much too slowly while walking . Many of the rooms / streets / towns are very large , and it is annoying to move like a tortoise through the streets . It isn't as much of a problem in combat ( since so much of combat is up-close and personal ) , but it is a pain otherwise . Thankfully , the developers have instituted a GREAT teleport system . Cross a save point on a world , and you can teleport from there to any other save point on that world , and back . The save points are generously distributed , so travel isn't TOO much of a chore , but it is still slow . Another annoyance is the high encounter rate . In some areas ( the lower levels of the mines of Vesan , anyone ? ) , one fights enemies every couple of steps . Battles are often grueling , and party members are inept at guarding , resulting in many items used per battle . The developers definitely erred on the difficult side for these battles , and the results are less than stellar . Thankfully , the system is somewhat broken - the main character has some incredible attacking spells , which can destroy groups in a single blow , as well as allow him to snipe mimics ( the worst enemies in the game ) from afar . The spells are expensive , but thanks to the friendly teleport system , one can simply return to an item shop , stock up on AP-restoring items , and return to the heat of battle . The amount of money made is absurd , and the levels go up quickly . Is it cheating ? Possibly , but otherwise , the game slows to a crawl . Utilize it to the fullest . When characters are walking , they will sometime make an exclamation ( in the form of a voiceover , usually describing the characters thoughts on the situation at hand ) . Without a doubt , this is one of the biggest misfires in the game . Each character has about 4 thoughts on each situation , and the length of some quests assure that you'll hear these same thoughts , OVER AND OVER . To add insult to injury , if you decide to explore your surroundings , often you will hear another character say , Are we going the right way ? ! ? I don't know about you , but an RPG that PUNISHES me for exploration is one of the dumber ideas in existence . I don't know what the developers were thinking - the most annoying aspect of DC2 was adding the voice module to the robot helper . However , you could always REMOVE the module . This is 10x worse . Another problem is the story . I love the idea of pirates searching the galaxy for treasure - why do I have to be bothered with the stale idea of evil corporation bent on ruling the galaxy ! ? I would have MUCH preferred a free exploration game based on the pirates themselves . When the game centers on the pirates , the story is nice . When it centers on the Daytron corporation , it bogs down . And boy does it BOG DOWN - the cut scenes are really boring as a rule , with people making insipid observations repeatedly - how many times does the character Jaster need to be told , Wear the power glove , and you'll be more powerful ! Sheesh , do they need to feed him , too ? ) . Anyway , that's my take . There is a hunter subquest , where you attempt to raise your hunter rank by defeating certain numbers of the same enemy , or hunting hard-to-kill marks , but I'm fairly indifferent toward it ( I feel that FFXII system was significantly stronger , with its more-immediate rewards - this one feels like a cheap knockoff ) . In general , this game should NOT be compared to FFXII - although at times it feels like a synthesis between FFXII and Dark Cloud , it seems more like the latter ( which is a good thing - the developers stuck with what they understood ) . In fact , this pretty much characterizes the game itself . When RG attempts to be like DC ( such as its presentation , combat , and weapon synthesis mode ) , it is very strong . When it attempts to be a FF-like RPG , it falls short . But , I like this one overall . . .

    • 015 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Updated Review on 2 - 9 - 2007 Not sure if the developers from Level - 5 worked with the authors who have created the animation called Treasure Planet from Disney back in 2002 . The pirate space ship just have almost the same kind of design as the Treasure Planet with ship contains sails look like 1700s and funny looking aliens . May be because Treasure Planet wasn't popular so they have to remake it into a video game ? Anyone notice that ? This game is also very similar to Star Wars in many ways . The character settings , planets , and storyline . With the main character named Jester Rogue from a desert planet called Rosa resembling Luke Skywalker , an orphan , being raised in the planet of Tatooine . The first planet you start to visit after an accident crash is a jungle planet called Jariaka . I think that is almost the same as Kashyyyk , where Wookiees from but with human looking natives though , you will encounter hot chicks too ! There is even a character similar to Yoda , very short , and wears a rope ! The battle system is in real time action . It is sometimes very intense where you are always at low health . So you better prepare a lot of healing potions and revival kits . Similar to FFXII's Gambit System , there is a convenient suggestion system which will ask for your advise to heal , revive or perform special attacks for the other characters or do healing / reviving automatically , though this system is not as detail as FFXII , it serves the basic needs . The music score really suits the environment , though it is very different from Star Wars that uses serious classical orchestra . The music are usually pretty epic , relaxing , joyful , sometimes with some classical flavours . If you want to know more about the soundtrack , you can expect the music similar to Chrono Cross , Xenogears , and Xenosaga 1 . Why ? Because we got Yasunori Mitsuda for making the theme song ! We also get verious composers including Yoko Shimomura who made Kingdom Hearts 2 . Moto Sakurab from Star Ocean , Valkyrie Profile , and Tales of Series . Wait , I think I'm mentioning about the Rogue Galaxy Premium Tracks ! Haha ! The original soundtrack is mostly composed by Tomohito Nishiura who did Dark Cloud . Yayoi Ono for vocals , and Barbara Kessler for the ending theme song . For gameplay , you will see something similar to Final Fantasy 10 and 12 system to upgrade your character's special abilities . There is something like a checkerboard and you have to use items to unlock new abilities called Revelation . Also , unlike FF12 , when you pick up new armors , they will be shown on the screen . When upgrading weapons , there is this very cute looking frog that can fuse two weapons with maximum level together . There are some mini games like Insectron which you have to set traps to capture insects and raise them like Digimon for battle ! The item creation is pretty interesting too . After certain point in the story , you will have a factory to invent and produce new products varies from items , materials and weapons . You can then purchase these items from shops around the galaxy . Also later in the story , you can purchase hunting locations to defeat the beasts to gain certain rare item and hunter points . There are some dissapointment , your character cannot use another character's weapon . For example Jester can only use a sword and gun , but you cannot use Lilika's Bow and dagger . There is one level where you need to fight in two huge towers , that dungeon is very annoying and you might need to spend more than 6 hours in the dungeon with almost identical environment for each floor . I haven't played through the whole game yet , but it has already given me the impression of Star Wars environment . If you like Star Wars , Digimon , Pockemon , Final Fantasy , Dragon Quest or Japanese RPG , I'm sure you will definitely love this game . Moreover , there aren't good PS3 games yet , so I play the Rogue Galaxy on my PS3 as a substitute .
    • 016 4  Updated Review on 2 - 9 - 2007 Not sure if the developers from Level - 5 worked with the authors who have created the animation called Treasure Planet from Disney back in 2002 . • 033 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) It is not hard to find the blatant similarities between Rogue Galaxly and Final Fantasy XII - both boasted huge universe to explore and quick pace action in a traditional RPG setting .
    • 097 4  Im a pretty picky gamer . I have found very few games interesting enough to finish . I finished this one . I really didnt think it was too difficult to learn or to get through . I dont like the cutscene length , I timed one at nearly 30 minutes ! ! However , this game was very fun . I have played many of the FF series and I think this one holds its own against those .
    • 110 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) ok to start off i loved this game when i first got it , it was way fun , and the thought of 100 + hours of that fun seemed impossible . . . it was , the game was a balst in the begging , finding new charecters and equipment , and getting new skills on the flow chart ( alot like the liscense board in FFXII ) and wepon synthesis . but all the fun quickly became repetative and the super long dunjuns were mega not fun and the occasional enemy that needs to be shot with the shield breaker gun just so you can kill it was really annoying , the only reason this game is 100 hours + is because of the lame stuff you will end of doing over and over and over , and soon you begin to realize how lame the story is . . . i mean omg it sucks but i dont want to spoil it for you .

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I am a huge fans of PS2 RPG's . There have been many fine titles in this genre such as the Suikoden , Final Fantasy , Xenosaga and Grandia games . RPG fans also know that Level - 5 has also made its fair share of contributions , most notably Dark Cloud , Dark Cloud 2 and Dragonquest VIII . While I enjoyed all of the previous Level - 5 titles , Rogue Galaxy takes it to the next level . Rogue Galaxy combines all of the finest elements of an RPG : solid gameplay , appealing graphics and replayability . The basic RPG systems here including weapon & armor upgrades , buffs & abilities as well as character stat increases are all nicely done . The use of the so-called Revelation system of chracter skills upgrades ties treasure and item purchases to stat upgrades . . . it is clever ( and it works ) . The visuals are all very well done . From beautiful jungles and dank mines to bustling metroplises , one gets the sense of being very small in very big worlds . The characters that you meed add flavor and purpose to the adventure , and they are well-conceived . I see that some here have complained about the adventure being too linear . While the adventure paths are fairly straightforward , don't believe for a second that means the game is limited in scope . There are a wealth of mini-games such as a factory where you build custom items , insectron games where you capture and battle with insects and a magical companion that can synthesize new weapons for you ( and that's just for starters ) . Too many RPG's are set in a DnD style fantasy , medieval-esque world . Rogue Galaxy , much like Xenosaga games , nicely fuses a modern , high-technology futuristic setting with RPG mechanics . In fact , I believe this game does it better than all other PS2 RPG's that attempt to do so . The game is charming and I highly suggest that you buy it . Seeing the Level - 5 label on it was reason enough for me to purchase it . . . but it is definitely the cream of the crop in their catalog . Games like Rogue Galaxy are proof that the PS2 still is alive and kicking ! Get the game . . . and enjoy the trip with Jaster !

    • 049 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I played this game last summer in 2009 , and it was a lot of fun . The dungeons can be a bit repetitive , but still , it's an overall solid rpg and a lot of fun to play .

As a RPG fan , I thoroughly enjoyed the game . It's challenging and fun with some good side missions . Definitely a game to have .

    • 071 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) A must buy if you are an RPG fan . Great graphics and story line , so far only half way through and have over 20h of game play . I love the fact that on load up of a continued game it tells you where you left off , so there is no worry if you don't play the game for a couple of days or more . The thing that is the most irritating for me is the fact that the characters keep on telling you where you should go if you decide to explore a different area or planet . Usually I get my item a week earlier than expected but it came within the time limit so I was happy .

    • 073 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Rogue Galaxy succeeds due to many factors , the main one being its story ( which breathlessly escapes most of the JRPG cliches ) . I appreciated hte fact that you played as a prty , but there was minimal babysitting - an efficient list of set commands is available to issue your teammates . the combat is fast and fluid , and brekas up some of the humdrum mechanics of many turn-based affairs . the weapon / item synthesis is deep ( practically a game in itself ) , and it will take well over 100 hours to experience everything just once . Any fan of dungeon crawlers , level grinders , or fast-paced action / RPGs should check this out .

    • 121 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I would like to be able to review this game but it does not play . I assume this is due to a faulty press when manufacturing the disc . So be aware when buying you too may end up with one that does not play . All I can say is great cover shame no game

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I'm going to give a fair and honest review about this game . I give it a three to be fair ; it's too long and has too many good points to get less , but I would not recommend it . Here's why : It opens up with a great scene that gets you ready to play , and when you go into houses with no load time , you're ecstatic . The game keeps things moving ! When you first run through the streets and battle a bit , you realize that this has one of the greatest battle systems EVER ! It's like - - wow ! The more moves you get for the main character , Jaster , the more you love the battle system . However , you quickly come to realize that there is ' something ' missing . You cannot tell what , it's just one of those FEELS that is not there . Notwithstanding , you continue , and you are treated to some nice cut scenes and interesting characters . The problems , however ; start with the first ' dungeon crawl ' . This game has SO many levels where you are running through a narrow hallway . . . for ten hours . Everything looks the same , the area is incredibly tedious and if not for the great battle system , you would have had to shut the game off to gather your wits . FINALLY you complete the level after becoming lost , wandering around aimlessly and eventually going through some nondescript area that you had no idea existed . You're feeling triumphant , and you are ready to tackle the next level . Until you discover that the next level is EXACTLY THE SAME ! Every major area in this game is a spectacularly dull and long endurance test . I'm a big fan of leveling up and gaining moves , but there were only three characters in this game that I cared about , but you are FORCED to be EVERYONE at least twice . So after realizing that I need to level up six or so uninteresting characters while running numbly through hundreds of inconspicuous hallways , I really , REALLY , don't want to level up any more . I just want to beat the game . The final boss requires you to use every character at a different area . Great , you mean , all of those characters that I did NOT level up because of my apathy toward them and hatred for the stupid dungeon crawling ? I have never gotten so close to the end of a game and simply lost interest , but that is exactly what I did here . I'm not a haughty , Oh , I like this because I'm supposed to person . Nor am I the type to rag on a game that others like , because , hey ! we all like different things . But if you're a casual Role-playing gamer , who likes things such as the Legend of Dragoon , Granadia III , and Tales of Symphonia , then I do not recommend this game . Yes , the scenery is gorgeous , the cities are creative and interesting to run around . ( Some of them ) But unless you care about these characters , ( which I can't see you caring about most of them . The dog-guy is my favorite character ) and don't mind going through ours of redundant , monotonous , tedious , boring , dull , uninteresting corridors , then by all means ; get the game . I would love to recommend it for the story and battle system , but I sincerely would not have gotten it had I suspected this . That's basically the ONE thing that ruined it for me . Even the EXTREMELY powerful monsters that require either brilliant strategy or hours of training did not deter me . The main dungeon-crawling levels did . I never beat the game , and honestly , I'm not even curious .
    • 005 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I first read about this game about two years ago in Game Informer and since then I had been waiting immpatiently for this game to be released . Well now it has , and it doesnt disappoint on any level . . . . NOT EVEN THE VOICE ACTING ! I figured I would rent this game first just incase ut ended up being terrible . No less than 30 minutes into the game I found myself utterly enthralled and captivated by the game . The gameplay is not hard at all , the concept is extremely fun , and the characters keep you interested as well . I highly recommend this game to anyone who is trying to restore use back into that PS2 that is collecting some dust , or to anyone with a PS3 that wants to play an excellent role-playing game .

    • 117 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) IS A GREAT GAME THAT WAS FOUND INTERESTING BY ME AND BOYFRIEND WE WERE TRYING TO , WELL HE PLAYS AND I WATCH BUT THE ONE I GOT BEFORE ALWAYS WAS GETTING STUCK AT THE SAME POINT . VERY NICE HOW YOU CAN INCREASE THE SPECIAL ATTACKS FOR EACH CHARACTER A LOT OF DIFFERENT ITEMS ARE REQUIRED FOR THESE DIFFERENT ATTACKS

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I've played 60 hours . .
    • 035 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Rogue Galaxy is another great game from Level - 5 Inc . It may not be as great as Dragon Quest VIII , but to me it is a recovery from Dark Cloud 2 , which was the most monotonous game I've ever played . Rogue Galaxy itself can be a little tedious , with repetitive dungeons and battles , but the complexity of the battle system makes the game very enjoyable . The plot is great and the voice acting is amazing and often humorous . The graphics and music are fine and the ability to create weapons in the factory and level them up adds a huge bonus to this game's fun factor . The synthesis is amazing , and searching for the legendary swords was exciting . Overall this game is a fun sixy-hour experience . I'd like to point out that , like many recent games , the back of the case tricks you into thinking that the game is 100 + hours . It is if you sit there and play it for 100 + hours , that is such false advertising ( they say that on Disgaea 2 as well ) . Any game can be 100000 hours if you play it for that long . This game takes about 50 - 60 hours to beat , if you're slow like me .
    • 065 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I've played 60 hours . . • 086 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Anyone who plays RPGs will find many of the story lines in Rogue Galaxy predictable but the characters are still interesting and likable .

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Okay i finished this game about 3 months ago and really don't ever want to go back to it again . You know the things i actually liked about the game were The traveling to different planets , The Ships Outer design and Not to mention Kisala was actually kinda cute . It's Character Designs were not impresive . The way you had to upgrade wepons became a pain . And i never did figure if there was a second Frog . I didn't understand the whole bug catcher thing . The Story line strayed so many time i forgot the whole reason of him leaving his homeworld . And then when you think you have a clue on who the enemy might be it throughs you a loop and what do you know a story change . . . Im talking about how the explorer looks like he gets killed off by the robot but later it shows he didn't . Then when you finally defeat the final boss . . . Oh wait it wasnt the final boss . . . And then all the characters have to fight one section of the final Boss ( okay that took 2 hours in it's self ) and don't get me started on the dungons . The final dungon yea most rpgs there long . This one took me 2 days of playing 5 hours straight to finally reach it . Granted some of the dungons werent that long , but some it would take you an hour to get out . I started out doing well in this game but i tell you what i had to use cheats once i got to the prison . Yea and how you meet 5 of the main charecters with before you leave the first world . hmmm , lets see in ff6 didn't take you all game to get all 14 players and Chrono Cross to get all characters you had to play the game atleast 2 or 3 times . Not here 5 , then the next 2 worlds you pick one up and then finally you get the Dog , Why the hell theres a planet filled with Elvs and Dogs , i don't know . I guess if you really want to play this game go ahead i would rent it though and see if you would like it first . I payed 40 dollers for it when it came out , yea don't wast 40 dollers like i did . The Pluse side was i also bought Xenosaga 3 that day too so it wasn't a total loss .
    • 031 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I played it , invested 80 some odd hours into it , and ultimately beat it . Did I have fun ? yeah . lots to do ? yeah . cool boss fights ? yeah . sidequests ? yeah . Would I ever play it again ? No . It has no replay value . The story is boring , the characters do not have enough development , and the ending is guaranteed to piss you off . So , while there's a lot to do , and while the graphics are nice , and while it's a long involved game , overall it lacks a lot , and you'll probably agree that one play-through is more than enough . Graphics - 6 / 10 Cut Scenes - 7 / 10 Game Play - 6 / 10 Character Development - 3 / 10 Story - 3 / 10 Difficulty - 3 / 10 Rent it for a few days before buying it .
    • 045 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I bought this game because of all the good reviews it has received , and I played into it for about 15 hours or so . Really , the only positive things I can say for the game are that it has very nice visuals and fairly good voice acting . The battles are no fun at all . If you fight them regularly , your teammates will get killed extremely quickly unless you constantly use potions to heal them . This ensures that you will spend all your money on potions and will never be able to buy new weapons . On the other hand , you can just win every non-boss battle right at the beginning by using a spell that kills everything . This is much more profitable , but extremely boring . It makes it so that battles are really nothing but load times . I quit the game at a section where you have to fight a boss one on one with a new character you pick up . This boss takes about 100 hits to kill , but he can kill you in 2 or 3 hits , a matter of seconds if you make a mistake . I did not want to waste a huge amount of my day grinding on the previously mentioned boring battles so that I could beat this boss , so I went and sold the game for less than half of what I bought it for . I found it to be a waste of time and a waste of money . It's a shame that a game that looks so nice can be such a disappointment .

    • 047 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Well , if you have ever played Dark Cloud 2 , the similarities are striking ; recycled menu systems , battle system , etc . Not that there is anything wrong with that . So , it makes for a very easy way to evaluate the game . If you liked Dark Cloud 2 , you will undoubtedly like Rogue Galaxy . If not , then be warned !
    • 067 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Rogue Galaxy is a fun game .
    • 101 4  This is a great game for hard core gamers and for rookies . It's fairly easy to figure out and one feature that is very nice is the ability to run from a battle .

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) OVERALL : Worthwhile ( 66% ) ROGUE GALAXY is a long RPG that has plenty of visual sparkle and audio zip to distract you from the occasionally dull gameplay and the pitifully limp plot . Young adults will likely find it a good ride , but the monotony , relentless focus on item collecting , and lack of a compelling story may leave more mature gamers underwhelmed . GAMEPLAY : Average Rogue Galaxy is an action rpg with some turn-based elements introduced by an action gauge that depletes with almost everything a character does in combat . As a result , battle consists of rapid-fire button-mashing followed by a long pause while you wait for the gauge to refill . This can be hastened by defending - - any blocked attack replenishes an empty gauge immediately . Each character has a main weapon and subweapon ; in almost every case the main weapon is a short-range physical attack such as a sword or knife , while the subweapon is a ranged weapon . Combat has an extremely shallow learning curve ; if you haven't picked up most of the nuances by the end of the introductory dungeon you need your head checked . Like most RPGs , characters earn experience through battle ( the three in the battle earn slightly more than the reserves ) . At first , level progression is extremely rapid , but experience utility rapidly drops . Also , between level 50 and 60 the experience required to go up one level explodes from ~ 20,000 to nearly 100,000 points . Accordingly , your characters essentially stop advancing unless you are willing to trod back and forth through the ( long ) dungeons . Of course , you're likely to be doing that anyway , because the only way to give your characters new abilities in Rogue Galaxy is to gather items and place them into a Revelation Flow . Some of the items required are quite common and available from shops - - these are easy to deal with , especially late in the game , because after some lean times early on money rapidly ceases to be a problem . Other items are only dropped by enemies , some of them quite rarely . For these , you have no recourse but to jog back and forth through some dungeon or other , hoping that you will encounter the particular enemy you need , and if you do , that it will drop the magic lipstick you're looking for and not something else . Item collection is also key to the several minigames . One of them , the Insector stadium , I did not attempt because the early parts bored me and I was already exhausted by the item-collecting slog . The other , a factory game , I personally found to be quite entertaining , involving some interesting design problems . I found myself wishing that it had been made a little more robustly ( placing and moving equipment was a bit of a chore ) , and that the rewards were a little better . By the time I had gathered the materials to make some of the factory's unique weapons , they were already far inferior to what I had in hand . Additionally , because the main character Jaster is also a bounty hunter , you can hunt various quarries , a task that also requires some of those same rare items . The primary problems with the gameplay is monotony . Once you've learned the system , that's it . That's all you're going to do for the next 40 - 60 hours . It never develops any nuances or gets more interesting . There is an attempt to spice combat up with special enemies that have attack resistance , but each of these has serious problems . Jump to attack enemies suffer from poor hit detection , shield enemies have a problem in that sometimes a charged strike just doesn't happen , and barrier enemies are simply annoying because the game's enemy lock-on system is somewhat unwieldy for large mobile groups . The ally AI cannot deal effectively with any of these enemies except the jump to attack , and even then your teammates occasionally become confused and just stand there . Generally , your allies will occasionally suggest something useful , but not frequently enough , so you will often pause the action to command them directly . Moreover , in combat they have an odd tendency to choose throwing an enemy over attacking them outright , which is often inconvenient . But in the end the solution to all these problems is to just bull through doing most of it by yourself - - you can't control your allies ' normal attacks , and their special attacks are all ineffective against the attack-resistant enemies ( they can't even fire their guns at the heads of the jump to attack foes ) . Monotony is also a problem in the level design . The dungeons themselves look great , and most of them have unique architectural features ( the staircases in the Gladius Towers , for instance ) that help evoke a sense of place beyond the art on the walls . However , neither of these features can disguise the fact that most locales are big , empty hallways . Long hallways too . The characters occasionally ask you When are we gonna get there ? , and you'll feel that way yourself before long . Some of the burden is alleviated by the save points , between which you can teleport , but for the most part the dungeons are simply too big , and too empty , and have too much of the same battle over and over again . There were some minor technical problems with the game . With two different controllers I found the game to have occasionally sluggish response to button presses - - particularly when it came to opening the battle menus or selecting an overworld submenu . In battle , the camera occasionally gets trapped in an awkward position , usually right behind the character , making it difficult to make sense of the situation . In these cases the problem can usually be alleviated by moving the character , but this is sometimes impossible because some enemies seem to take up more space in the battle area than they occupy on screen , making it difficult to move around them . In the end , this game has passable combat mechanics that are competently executed , but nothing new , and linked to an overall motif that accentuates the combat system's shortcomings due to the length , focus on item collection , and quirky level progression . STORY : Poor The story of Rogue Galaxy is about a young man named Jaster who longs for adventure and finally gets his opportunity when . . . you know what , let's skip the synopsis . It doesn't matter . Rogue Galaxy limps through a stock plot populated by one-dimensional characters that tumble into and out of the story whenever the writers find it convenient . A few good lines here and there are all lost in the script's dreadful flatland of inane dialogue . Some interesting themes and angles are toyed with , but none are ever developed . The villains are also underdeveloped , with no arc of conflict to make the final battle feel like anything more than just another boss battle . Even the denouement is deeply unsatisfying , and leaves several ( already underdeveloped ) elements hanging . The story is a total dud , from start to finish . AUDIO : Superior The failings of the story can in no way be laid on the voice actors , who turn in a fantastic performance , down to the last extra . Honestly , I was moved by the fact that they could approach this flaccid script with such effort and devotion . Steve Blum deserves special praise for the job he did with Zegram . The backing music is also pleasant , with one remarkable vocal piece that deserved ( like the voice acting ) to be in a better game . VISUALS : Superior And the dumb story is presented in visual glory that may be the most eloquent argument yet against the PS3 . Despite the supposed limitations of the PS2 the game is a stunning cel-shaded wonder . Some of the visual elements are familiar , perhaps almost passe at this point , but other bits , notably the bizarre pirate ship Jaster finds himself on , are strikingly designed works of art . Character designs are of excellent quality also , and all the playable characters have multiple outfits ( which generally appear in the cutscenes but inexplicably not on the Dorgenark ) . The monster designs are original and mostly go beyond the simple pallette swap ( notably awful exception being the mask - type enemies ) ; the variety of monsters is also fairly high . The environments are also a joy . I especially liked the look of the Gladius Towers for some reason . The art department and graphic encoders really outdid themselves on this one , and the visual treat is a major counterweight to the game's shortcomings . REPLAYABILITY : Mediocre Rogue Galaxy is fair bursting with extra content , considering the minigames and two optional post-game dungeons . But to actually replay the main game is something you're not likely to pursue , given the factors I've discussed above . If you feel like the visuals and voice acting can pull you through the slog a second time , more power to you , but that wasn't the case for me .
    • 027 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Story : Jaster Rogue is stuck on the backwater planet of Rosa with dreams of exploring the vast galaxy that he gazes up at every night . Unfortunatley with the expanding war between Longardia ( rosa is under their control ) and Draxil his dreams are fading further away . One day Jaster is returning to the city from a hunting trip when a beast suddenly attacks the city . Knowing that he is one of the few who might have a chance against the beast Jaster rushes toward the center of the city where he bumps into a mysterious stranger who helps him fight off some of the attacking beasts . After the battle the stranger gives him a strange sword , wishes him luck and disappears . Not long afterward he finds the rune beast attacking the city and also two men who claim to be space pirates and are looking for someone named Desert Claw and Desert Claw had a sword that looked a lot like the one that Jaster is holding . . . . so begins the story on how a case of mistaken identity sets Jaster and his crew of misfits on a journey to find the lost planet of Eden , which legend tells was the the richest planet in the galaxy before it disappeared 10,000 years earlier . Soon though a simple treasure hunt turns into a race to beat the evil Daytron corporation from using Eden for its own evil ( though profitable ) ends . Will Jaster find Eden before Daytron ? Will getting to Eden save the galaxy from Daytron or did Eden disappear for a more sinister reason ? - - - - - - - - - ( some minor spoilers ) To start off I did like this game . It is a bit straight forward , all the pieces fall into place like your standard RPG . In some parts of the game it did look like the developers were trying to go a bit deeper with the story and character backgrounds but that just kinda falls flat for some reason , Final Fantasty , Mass Effect or Suikoden it it is not . Also around the middle of the game the reason for Eden disappearing involves the messing around with of time . Which to me is where the story starts to unravel a little , the characters talk about 10,000 , 30,000 , and 50,000 time periods like they were nothing and one of the characters apparently spent about 9980 yrs floating around in space with her robot body guard until she was found by the space pirates . I know its a video game rpg and a fantasy / scifi one at that but still it would have been nice if the last half of the story made a little more sense . The only other complaints I had was the dungeons and the leveling combining process . Mostly the dungeons are the same with different wall paint or backgrounds slapped on , which I didn't really mind because the combat system is great in this game ( though it can get repetive because the enimes don't change much either , they just change colors ) and I could happily wack away for a couple of hours and come back the next day and do it again . But the problem is that there is only x amount of weapons to combine before combining any more starts to actually weaken your weapon . Which means ( at least to me ) there is no point to keep wacking away at the monsters . It just gets boring diving to the bottom of the dungeons to find items either you don't need or weaker weapons that can't be leveled and combined because they actually make the weapon you have worse . Like another reviewer said completionists will love this game since there is a ton of treasure chests to find , quarrys to track down , and secrets to find . But if your like me once most your characters have weapon that is in the 300 to 400 dmg range , you'll proably just start running through the dungeons because your levels are high enough that a few whacks will kill anything and if it doesn't you have proably unlocked most of the skills so that will polish the rest off . Which makes the end dungeons very annoying because monsters tend to pop up a lot and the dungeons are loooong . Other than those minor issues this is a very enjoyable RPG that will keep most players entertained and playing to find out how the game ends . Summary : Graphics : Bright , clear , and vibrant . Dungeon backgrounds can be a bit repetive . The CG sequences in this game are definetly worth looking at . Somtimes it suprising they look that good on the PS2 . Contorl / Camera : Works , mostly . Somtimes there is so much activity on the screen its hard to figure out where your character is , also unless you can get the hang of the targeting system its usually better just to hit whatever is close so the character locks on without having to to cycle through all the enemies . This can cause some issues during boss battles . Gameplay / story : Gameplay is entertaing until the weapon combining and skill discovery limit is hit and then it can become boring repetive . In my case this did not happen till the end so it wasn't a big deal . The story is a no brainer with indications that it could have gone higher and further . Around the middle of the game the scifi aspect kicks in a little and the story gets a little garbled . Conclusion : I would recommend this game to any one who likes Action RPG's and those who like thier games to have a lot of stuff and secrets to find . m.a.c

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Rogue Galaxy has been one of 2007 ' s top rated role playing games and on reflection the reasons for this are obvious .
    • 007 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Rogue Galaxy has been one of 2007 ' s top rated role playing games and on reflection the reasons for this are obvious . • 060 4  this game is good for people who like games that you can play for a long time . the back of the game says more than 100 hours of gameplay .
    • 070 4  Its a very good game , if you like RPG this is one of the games i recommened .

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) The game's general story is : seemingly nobody boy wants to leave planet to explore , is mistaken for someone else , and has to keep up this facade to prevent himself from missing out on his chance to explore the galaxy . And the game starts off good , really good . The problem is just that as the game continues the story becomes more and more predictable and sappy . I think there was one plot twist but you could see it coming a mile away ( heck there were cutscenes in every location directly telling you it would happen ) . That said , the combat system is fun , it's a mix between Secret of Mana's action based battling and Final Fantasy's random battles which may or may not turn off people to the game . I found it to be refreshing and , for the most part , enjoyed the battles . I did find , however , toward the end , you could rely on casting one skill at the beginning of each battle and pretty much kill all the enemies in one quick blow , time and time again . There are plenty of side things to do ranging from a bug arena ( pretty interesting idea ) where you bring collected bugs to battle to be the best to a factory where you arrange materials collected with set recipes to build new items for the stores you frequent . Unfortunately , the game's story is horrid and there are other flaws which take this almost wonderful game and turn it into something less than exciting . One of the main flaws with the game , I'd say , is the constant need to grind away at enemies to survive at all . You'll beat one area and instantly be thrown into the next where the enemies seem nearly impossible . I mean , it makes sense to increase the level of the enemies but so dramatically ? It just forces you to sit at the beginning of each stage , build up enough of a level to survive the battles , and then move on out . There are also weird items you get in your inventory that seem to have no purpose after their initial use and are downright silly . You're given a glove that increases your strength at one point to break something in your way . . . but then the glove is never used again . Oh wow , we're very lucky that glove was in the area for this predicament . Anyhow , the game is pretty and if you can stand the somewhat sappy empty story you will enjoy the game . So if you do see it on sale , I suggest buying it and giving it a try . Don't jump into it thinking it'll be on the level of any other RPG series ( Suikoden , Dragon Quest , Final Fantasy ) because it just isn't .
    • 023 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I was skeptical at first , but loved the Dark Cloud series and decided to give Rogue Galaxy a shot . I was pleasantly surprised ! I had so much fun my husband had to plead and beg for me to stop playing so we could go to bed at night . Even then I would carefully unplug my PS2 and sneak out to keep playing ! I was hooked . There was some campy moments , that advanced the plot line - but it wasn't unbearable . I found that unlike the Dark Cloud series ( also by Level - 5 ) , there was PLENTY to do - insectron tournaments , hunting records , climbing to the top of the hunter charts , the factory system , unlocking new and more powerful spells , creating better weapons with toady . . . and I admit , took me three days to defeat the ending sequence ( it's hard ! ) . I did find the ghost ship a pleasing reward however . Final Fantasy Fans and turn based RPG fans will not find this to their liking as they would the Dark Cloud series on it's own , but anyone of the Zelda and Kingdom Heart series and if you loved the Dark Cloud series as well ( Action RPG ) will definitely find plenty within Rogue Galaxy to keep yourself occupied with hours of fun . ( I clocked in well over 150 hours ) .

    • 039 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) This is a great game . The story is solid and the battle system is well executed . The Factory is quite confusing , but the items produced are very useful . I did not like the Frog Log , I thought it was lame as there was not any tips or hints to the best upgrades and the guide didn't help either . Once you analyzed a weapon , it went into the Frog Log , and then you HAD to produce that weapon , or your Frog Log wouldn't be completed for the final rewards . The Flow Chart was a good concept and automatically encouraged you to farm enimies for items , thus ensuring your levels rose adequately enough to conquer enemies in the next levels . The game makes you wish there had been many more worlds to explore and conquer with more Marks to hunt . The game has great replay value .
    • 092 4  This is a good game for old-fashioned dungeon crawler fans . Though the battle system could use a little tweak here and there , it is , overall an exciting and somewhat challenging piece to play .
    • 109 4  game was good . problem was , game would not load . was defective , amazon exchanged game and within 2 days had my new game . was impressed with service . must makenote , only bad game i ever got before was also level 5 game ( dragon quest 8 )

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) The Playstation 2 has tons of RPGs . When a new one marches forth most RPGers can usually say Yep or Nope . Rogue Galaxy is definitely a Yep . It's easy to grasp , yet difficult to master . It's shorthanded in some key areas which keep it from being perfect , but it's still one of the best RPGs to come around in a while . Rogue Galaxy follows the story of Jaster . Jaster dreams of exploring the galaxy someday . He more than gets his chance after having a run in with a Bounty Hunter , and then being mistaken for said bounty hunter . In all honesty , Rogue Galaxy doesn't have a great storyline . It's certainly not horrible , but it's standard . It's also full of predictable plot points , and it actually lacks a little in the character development . These two aspects of any RPG are crucial . Whether you want to accept it or not , story and character development are important , and Rogue Galaxy lacks both . It's sad because you'll meet a lot of characters who are interesting . The problem is that you just don't learn enough about them . Luckily , the game is saved by the sheer fun factor that comes with the battle system . Unlike other RPGs , Rogue Galaxy doesn't have you running around and then there's a transition into a random battle . Rather , enemies just pop up and you take a battle stance right in the area you're exploring . It's very similar to Kingdom Hearts in that regard . When in battle you'll be able to jump around , slash as your enemies and switch between primary and secondary weapons . Your primary weapon is usually a melee weapon , while your secondary is a projectile . Battling is fast paced and fun . It deviates away from the menu based combat that has dominated RPGs over the past couple of decades . Battling isn't entirely simple , though . The game is quite a challenge in many regards . First , there's the emphasis on strategy . This is more than just you smacking an enemy until it dies . Some enemies you'll have to expose their weakness in some way before you can start dealing damage to them . Some only take damage from certain weapons . There is a definite emphasis on strategy . Your characters will often give you hints on what to do as well . You only control one character in combat . The others are controlled by AI . Unfortunately this is another aspect where Rogue Galaxy falls short . Your allies are hardly aggressive . There will be plenty of moments where you'll have to revive your AI controlled characters . There are moments where the game's difficulty is so high that reviving and healing characters becomes a constant chore . This is mostly apparent in boss battles . Which brings up another factor that can make or break the experience of Rogue Galaxy . Leveling up also feels like a chore sometimes . It takes a lot of battling to level up . It's fun , thank goodness , but much like Dragon Quest VIII there are times when you'll spend more time level grinding than progressing through the game . Some RPGers will love this challenge , but others may not be patient enough to do so much level building . The game is long as it is , and so much more of it requires the player to be dedicated to level grinding . For the most part , though , it's still a fun game to play , and the battle system is so much more involving than other RPGs out there . Another factor to aid the battle system and peak the interest of any RPGer is the weapon fusion . As you go through the game , your weapons also level up . They can be be fused with other weapons to make more powerful weapons . So much of Rogue Galaxy isn't so much dependent on your defense as much as it is your offense . So it's a good idea to fuse some good weapons . However , weapon fusing isn't completely fun and games . There's no way for you to become a God right from the get go with weapons . Factors such as the weapon type , weapon level , your characters skill with the weapon etc . play a pivotal role . So even if you created a really powerful weapon early on , your character may not be skilled enough to wield it . This works very well , because it keeps the game from becoming too easy too fast . Rogue Galaxy also offers a complex ability system called Revelations . Each character has a Revelations Flow Chart . By buying certain items and placing them in the Revelations Flow Chart , your characters will learn abilities , and other parts of the Flow Chart will open up for them . Like a lot of the game , it's actually pretty simple to learn . This is what's nice about Rogue Galaxy . It's easy to pick up and play . There are some pretty cool optional quests that you can do throughout the game . You can collect bugs that can be used in a stadium ( very similar to Pokemon ) , go on bounty missions , explore other planets . Rogue Galaxy is a pretty big game all on its own . The main quest is big enough , but some of the secrets and extras are enough to rival the Final Fantasy games . Visually , Rogue Galaxy is one of the most artistic and beautiful looking games out there . It has a beautiful cel-shaded look very similar to Dragon Quest VIII . The environments are detailed and pretty . The fact of how exploration is done is also fantastic . Instead of just roaming around you'll have to jump up platforms and such as well . There are better looking games , but the style of this one is what makes the graphics stand out . Load times also feel non-existent . Since battles take place in exploration , and the game's cutscenes don't have to load ( because there are no flashy FMVs ) , there's not much the game really has to load . Speaking of which , the sound and audio quality is really good . There are times when the soundtrack feels like it isn't big enough , but you'll enjoy what you get from it , regardless . The voice acting is also done really well , even if a lot of dubbing is off more so than other RPGs . The point is simple : With video games moving on to newer systems , it's nice to see that the Playstation 2 hasn't been left in the dust , and that Rogue Galaxy really is a high quality RPG . It may not have the best story in the world , or the best characters , but it's a huge game , with tons of things to do . The sheer amount of fun you'll have with this game is a testament to it's good quality . Pros : + Beautiful Looking Game + Great soundtrack + Good voice acting + Tons of sidequests and optional things to do + Very engaging battle system + Load times feel non-existent + The game is a good overall challenge + Weapon fusion is deeper than most RPGs that try to do the same thing Cons : - Predictable storyline - Not enough character development - AI controlled characters don't do enough - Some boss battles are unreasonably challenging - A huge emphasis on level grinding , but you won't get enough experience from most of these enemies

    • 011 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Who says there's no more original or good games to come out on the PS2 these days besides God of War 2 ( wait , I think I said that . . . ) ? Rogue Galaxy may very well be the last , great , original RPG to come out for the PS2 , which is fitting because it's from the makers of the amazing Dragon Quest VIII and Dark Cloud 2 ; which you'll probably be able to tell considering Rogue Galaxy's great , cartoony art style . Playing as young Jaster Rogue , you find yourself playing space-pirate in a case of mistaken identity . Without giving too much else away , you'll find Rogue Galaxy to have a great and lengthy quest with a quick paced battle system . The game's imaginitive art style , environments , and atmosphere is a welcome look in an otherwise stale RPG market , with plenty of enjoyable moments for sci-fi buffs to boot . The characters are great as well and don't get annoying as the game goes on , plus there's a boatload of enjoyable mini-games and other RPG elements as well . The only real downsides to Rogue Galaxy are that while the game's fighting system is fast paced , there's really not all that much to it . Not to mention that now and then , some of the explorable areas can often blend into one another . All that aside , Rogue Galaxy is a more than enjoyable and original RPG that PS2 owners who have had their fill of Final Fantasy XII should definitely consider picking up , and it's probably the last , best , original RPG to hit the PS2 .
    • 032 4  I played it , invested 80 some odd hours into it , and ultimately beat it .
    • 036 4  Rogue Galaxy is another great game from Level - 5 Inc .
    • 057 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I really liked this game , honestly At first I wasn't blown away and they tutor you immediately as to the stying's of this game , the fighting is sorta like final fantasy dierge of cerbus . its sword & gun , etc . it's not window prompts ! very unusual and i like that . the over all feel of the game is closest to chrono cross ( many characters , varients , etc look design . . feel ) along with a music score close to what you might hear in xenosaga .

  • Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Why do people like this game so much ? Most of the characters are the same as almost every other RPG you've ever played : the young man who wants to travel , the nice girl who likes him , the tough girl who's half dressed ( my personal favorite ) , the old experienced guy who is a prick , and the ex-soldier who ( awww ) wants to redeem himself . These aren't spoilers ; if you played any two RPGs in your life , you will see this stuff a mile away . The other three characters are slightly more interesting , but who cares ? There is barely any storyline , and I played for 40 hours , so I know . The gameplay is more boring and choppy than the story , which is a first for me . Usually games with bland stories are still fun to play * cough * Star Ocean * cough * . Your party ( which the main character is a part of , always ) walks around , and suddenly , monsters hop in front of you , for no reason , right there on the screen ! Pretty rude if you ask me . Then your buddies proceed to die . I leave ' em dead , I can handle the rude boys myself , but is the purpose of bringing people with you to help if they're just gonna die ? They have abilities that usually kill all the normal enemies on the screen , but they need your permission first . The boss fights were okay , though . Nothing spectacular . The game itself is pretty ( yes , PRETTY ) , but battle frame rates drop when there are lots of enemies ( 4 ) on the screen . A lot of the elements of this game seem too similar to other games , especially the Burning Strike , it looks like VP2 ( but better looking ) . There's not a lot of pirating in this game neither , nor a lot of places to go . You would think a galaxy would have at least a couple more planets than a solar system . The extras are the best part of this game , but they suck ! Do you remember the weapon upgrade system from DC2 ? Not here ! Instead , some loser frog eats two of your weapons ( must be same type ; Jaster's swords only combine with Jaster's swords , for example ) and spits out one . There are a lot of palette-swaped weapons , and special attributes don't carry over to new weapons . There aren't any really good ones anyway ( stuff like poison , freeze , burn , stun ; no healing , theft and such like DC2 ) . The frog suggests stuff , and you can guess what it will be , sort of . Hunting was fun , but got old quickly ( who has hours to run around in circles killing bison anyway ? Not me , no sirree ) . My rank was 23 , right before I sold it ( the game , not the rank ) . Meh . The factory is cool . You get to build a puzzle-like factory with which to build weapons and items . Pretty creative , Level - 5 . I never got play Insectron , too busy hunting human-sized stuff . Might be good though . Overall , the main game sucks , you've probably played it before a hundred times . Weapon upgrading was a chore , hunting took forever , and of course , boobage . Elf lady boobage , jungle lady boobage . Hey , if you like boobies , play this , it's boobs all in there . Yep . Boobs . Oh , when I say boobs , I mean morons , like that Tidus-looking nincompoop . Level - 5 should have just made another Dark Cloud game .
    • 025 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) We recently bought this game to kill time on our new PS2 and I have to say this game is the most time consuming game I've ever played . It takes a lot of traveling to get to some points in the story and the battles are extremely hard at some points . It's much easier to get defeated in this game than others . The enemies seem to suddenly jump levels above your character which is irritating , but also make it quite fun to take as a challenge . There is a lot of time put into leveling up if you want to avoid getting defeated too many times . Overall , this game is very interesting . My brothers and I have not gotten very far but it's different from the narrow selection of games we've played so far . The graphics are beautiful , the little details make the overall image pretty . The annoying aspect was the enemy encounter rate as well as the suggestion system during battle . There's little warning when you will engage in battle and the characters you aren't controlling often need to be healed and revived . It's a little difficult to grasp onto the suggestion system because when you're focusing on attacking the enemy , figuring which item or ability to approve and which button to press to approve it can sometimes be a challenge . But you get the hang of it after a while . I'd say this game is a definite yes for the RPG lovers since it does give hours upong hours of gameplay . The battling system is also quite interesting to try and master .

    • 095 4  This has got to be in the top 5 of all rpg's i've played . Bosses arent't too easy . ( got my butt kicked several times by getting lazy ) . I disliked the factory system . I'm 90% through the game and havn't made a thing there . Liked the frog log and everything else about the game . I'd recommend it to anyone who likes RPG's
    • 102 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Why do people like this game so much ? • 106 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) When i first heard about it I wanted it so bad . when it was my birthday i bought it . And i was like WOW . The graphics in it are AWSOME . The gameplay is SWEET . And the game is really long so it will keep you busy until the cows come home . The first world isnt long . But the second is so long it took 3 days just to finish it . NOW THATS LONG ! I bought it for $ [ . . . ] I think its worth every penny . If you dont have it run to the nearest store and buy it quickly . HURRY ! ! !
    • 123 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) I rented this game last week . . . and after putting four hours of my time into it , I discovered that I put the controller down in a worse mood than when I picked it up . This game is a waste of time . It looks great , but just isn't playable . The AI isn't capable enough to handle combat . . . at all . Your party members just walk into the enemy , swing , and die . Blocking is very effective . . . but your AI party members never do it . You spend over half the time in combat stopping to bring up the menu to heal or revive your allies . I died three times in the second area of the game as well . Dispersed among the levels are absolutely terrible monsters that will can easily kill your party . The treasure chests attack you . And they annihilate you . They're by far the most difficult enemy in an RPG's early game that I've seen . One hit from them takes off most a character's HP , it can hit multiple characters , and can sometimes attack more than once per animation . The game also scales them up in levels to always be vastly stronger than you , and to top it all off , the game explicitly prevents you from running away from them ( the run menu is greyed out when they attack you . . . ) This is completely against the general exploration theme of RPG's . . . you're supposed to find and open treasure chests , not wonder if the chest contains an item or a practically guaranteed Game Over . The game also froze once when I was playing it . Interestingly enough , it was when I opened a treasure box . . . the screen flickered , and just stopped . Don't pay $30 for this game , it's not worth the frustration or the money .

  • Worthwhile ( 66% ) ROGUE GALAXY is a long RPG that has plenty of visual sparkle and audio zip to distract you from the occasionally dull gameplay and the pitifully limp plot .
    • 002 4  The Playstation 2 has tons of RPGs .

    • 010 4  . . . just isn't the same , but that's not to say that Rogue Galaxy isn't solid . But , I like this one overall . . .
    • 013 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Rogue Galaxy is like Ruby Tuesday's . Sure you can get a good burger at Ruby Tuesday's but there really are not that many substantial differences between that place , Bennigans , Applebees , Chili's ( well excepting fajitas and endless tostada chips ) , Fridays . . . . and Rogue Galaxy has no real substantive differences with a host of scifi films and other rpgs . Let's start with the meat and potatoes . Rogue Galaxy is a solidly designed game with a good battle system , excellent graphics and very good voice overs . There are some problems ; you can only play as one character during battle scenes and the AI needs a bit of work since most of the other party members seem to yell Jasper ! as much as they actually fight the bad guys . The dungeon scenes seem to go on a bit longer than they should have . No deal killers to be sure on this end . The problem with Rogue Galaxy is its shameless unoriginality . Space pirates ( think FFXII ) meets Star Wars ! A restless young man on a desert planet dreams of going into space and with the help of a short being and a tall robot is able to live his dream . Throw in a spunky princess who does not mind hanging with the boys and the There's one thing he didn't tell you . . . . I am your father character and the blatant story stealing gets on the nerves . Rogue Galaxy comes off as having been designed by a committee who wanted to play it safe . All cliches on deck and reporting for duty , Captain ! Is the game fun ? Sure if you don't mind reliving the same plot from a thousand other stories and playing as the hero with a thousand faces ( though ever since Joseph Campbell and George Lucas started hanging out together , that may have become the hero with a million faces ) . The gameplay and the graphics save the game . The big problem is you'd think the ghost of Star Wars would go away after 30 years instead of being basically plagiarized for video games .

    • 018 4  I'm going to give a fair and honest review about this game .
    • 021 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Rogue Galaxy is the latest game from the creators of Dark Cloud , which means it retains many of the good features that the series developed in its two main games . This latest installment is more mature , with a more far-reaching agenda and some characters with a bit of extra depth . The cartoon style graphics are still being used , but they look great . My only regret is that the game clearly steals many of it's new features from Final Fantasy XII ! The story is the usual . . . how many more times must I type this : a young adventurer called Jaster dreams of being a space pirate and exploring the galaxy . By chance ( mistaken identity ) he is picked up by a band of pirates , and they go off in a simple search for treasure , only to stumble across a plan to destroy the whole world . So that's that , then , now let's get onto the mechanics . The battles are quite fun . A bit like Star Ocean or Kingdom Hearts for the PS2 , you have a battle party of 3 from your total team of about 8 . Battles are real time , and apart from the player you control , the other two team members act on AI . The settings for this are very basic , so your team mates will basically attack one target , attack nearest target , or do nothing . To add more creativity , the game has included suggestions ' , which work quite well . While battle is underway , your two team mates will shout out for your attention , basically when they think a good special attack or item is needed . Sometimes its a heal potion , but more often , it is a request to do one of their special moves . Now because battles are quite hectic , this rather annoying sounding feature actually works pretty well . Most of the time I was charging into battle with my controlled character and leaving the other two to their own devices . A quick glance at the HP levels , which are always visible on screen ( even if the team mates are not ) gives you a warning if things are getting out of hand . But even so , the suggestions come at pretty good moments , always offering to heal if someone is approaching 50% or so of HP left , or use a crowd clearing attack if everyone is healthy . You can quickly accept the suggestions with one click and then get straight back to your own devices , so it does feel like real teamwork . Everyone has a few signature moves of their own , and one limit break style super attack which takes special strike-points to collect before it can be executed . This ultimate attack ( called a Burning Strike ) is possible even harder than FFXII's Quickening chains to pull off , as it demands that you watch two areas of the screen at the same time and hit buttons to an exact timing - not easy ! Battles are pretty dynamic and can turn nasty very swiftly if you don't watch what's going on . Luckily level-building is not too much of a chore and upgrades to weapons is pretty constant . This feature is carried over from the Dark Cloud games , because weapons can be combined together to form new , stronger ones , and their features modified with other items . You can spend a lot of time in this game seeking out dozens of weapons ( each person has two weapon types that they use ) , and mixing them together to make better ones . And you'll need them - Monsters are mean and relentless , and some of them can be tough - even regular dungeon monsters can be annoying - especially if they have shields up . Out of all the good features of the game , this one really annoyed me . Jaster has a very weak gun which has the sole feature of being a barrier breaker - any monster that has a barrier needs it removing before you can do any damage , and only this gun can do it . The result is that you'll be endlessly swapping this barrier-break gun into play to break defence and then out again to damage them with a stronger one ( as the barrier-break gun does zero actual damage ) . In later dungeons where lots of enemies have this shield it becomes a MAJOR pain to keep going to the menu for this over and over again . But that's one of the few niggles I had with battles . . . the other one might be that it's hard to tell who your player is targetting when there are several enemies on screen . On the subject of creation , the old town building feature of Dark Cloud has also been retained in the Factory , where you can build complicated production lines to synthesize new items out of various things that you find throughout the game . This has always been a fun feature of the series . Items to be collected include things like lipstick , bananas , music boxes , flowers , bits of metal , small animals , masks and jewels , all of which have no use in the game except as factory ingredients . You could spend a very long time in the Factory mini game just trying to create new items , and it can be quite a fun distraction . As for size , the game does not have that much to offer in locations , but boy , some of those dungeons are LONG ! ( if you play it , chances are that the Two Towers will try your patience quite a bit ! ) . There are only about 6 planets so travel is a breeze . The in-game map is vital as the dungeons are often huge labyrinths constructed of cookie-cutter repeat corridors , but they still look pretty good , even with the repetition . Let me just say again at this point , however , that some of the games ideas are clearly inspired by Final Fantasy XII , most notably the save icons , which also teleport you , the ability to swap team members in battle , and the Two Towers dungeon which looks remarkably like another tall tower in FXII . It also has a quarries sub-game , which is a direct copy of FFXII's hunts . However it's probably an easier game to play . . . some of the bosses look great but none of them are particularly hard if you take a bit of care . The ending is also pretty good , with quite a long chain of bosses to kill without any saving allowed ( hint - make sure to level up characters evenly ! ) . Overall , a good , solid fun game to play with no real letdowns . Put some time in and you'll soon be hooked all the way to the end .

    • 028 4  Story : Jaster Rogue is stuck on the backwater planet of Rosa with dreams of exploring the vast galaxy that he gazes up at every night . Conclusion : I would recommend this game to any one who likes Action RPG's and those who like thier games to have a lot of stuff and secrets to find . m.a.c
    • 030 4  The game's general story is : seemingly nobody boy wants to leave planet to explore , is mistaken for someone else , and has to keep up this facade to prevent himself from missing out on his chance to explore the galaxy .
    • 037 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) The first and easiest way to know if a game is really good is if after a year of being out on the market , the used price at GameStop is not that far off from the price for a new game . This game follows this rule . While it's hard to find sometimes , and the strategy guide is even harder to find , the game has a rich story line , great voice acting , and different and exciting gameplay . There are only two cons : sometimes it is very dungeon-crawling , and going through some areas takes forever . The other thing , which I kind of like , is the abundance of cut scenes - more than your run-of-the-mill RPG , I think . I just absolutely love this game , and there are too many reasons to list , from the voice-acting , to the characters to themselves , to the weapon customisation , to the multiple weapons per character . At points it will seem very similar to Final Fantasy XII ( for example , main characters starting out in a desert area ? big fancy city with lots of technology ? warring empires ? ) , but is that really a bad thing ? Lots of different sidequests , tongue-in-cheek comedy at times , and some throw-backs to anime fans and other geeks like myself that just add that extra bit of awesome . I would and do highly recommend this game to everyone I know .

    • 042 4  Style - The animation and the character designs are definitely very nice . The dungeons however are unimaginative and lazily designed . Each dungeon is unique but you'll be seeing slight variations of the same hallways and rooms over and over again within those dungeons . This was probably done by design to allow for their world to be seamless and eliminate the need for load times , I personally would have like to had more interesting dungeons and load times than bland and repetitive dungeons without load times . Load times - There are none , but considering how repetitive the environments are on each planet , this isn't a great accomplishment . . . you can explore whatever you want without load times like it said but don't expect to find much . Combat - The combat was definitely the highlight of the game for me . It fast paced , very dynamic ( for a jrpg anyway ) and takes place on the map , there is no special battle screen you have to load . They even throw in random Challenge Battles that reward a special prize for completing , these challenges will usually be things like Kill all enemies in XX amount of time or Kill all enemies using * character name * only in XX time . There is no penalty for not completing these , its just something that keeps combat more interesting as you progress . Unfortunately although you will find yourself having to grind , grind and grind some more for hours on end if you are trying to complete the lesser hunter quarries which amount to 4 or 5 different Kill 30 of XX enemy . Some of these enemies you will be lucky to see 1 or 2 of for every 10 battles you fight . I would suggest just passing these mini-quests up but they are sadly convenient because . . . If you want to create new weapons ( which is done by combining two similar weapons ) you will have to first MAX the skill on both weapons first which translates to running in circles for an hour while your skill with that weapon slowly reaches MAX . By the time this happens you'll find you have killed 21 / 30 of a certain enemy and if you're like me you won't want to leave that undone since its almost complete . . . once you complete that you'll find you've killed 23 / 30 of another type . . .40 minutes later you can move on if you just give up on it or if you're lucky . Story - As interesting as playing as space pirates , collecting bounties across the galaxy may sound the story is weak and follows your typical RPG story outline . Boy leaves home to explore the world . . . check , boy meets hot girl . . . check Boy meets more characters along the way who inexplicably decide to follow him in his travels . . . check Boy and co discover evil plot , then thwart evil plot . . . check , game end . The characters for the most part aren't bad , just recycled archtypes you've seen in every other RPG , none of them stand out . The ones who do stand out stand out for all the wrong reasons . . . bad over the top accents , annoying personality , etc . Conclusion The combat system , the weapon creation system , the insectron mini-game are all definitely fun and have quite a bit of depth but they really aren't enough to make me recommend this game to anyone except to people who love RPG's and have a tremendous amount of time to waste . If you're looking for a really in depth RPG , with good story and characters I recommend Disgaea 1 and 2 if you haven't already played them .
    • 044 4  I am a huge fans of PS2 RPG's .
    • 051 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Pros : Likable characters , good music and sound , good voice acting , good GUI Cons : Outmoded and too-frequent random battle system , excessively long dungeons , drab story , twists are super obvious , tedious FMVs when traveling between planets , final sequence is long and tedious ( momentum killer ! ) , awkward loading times This game instantly reminded me of Final Fantasy XIII - it's sort of action RPGish , you start in a desert town , you go on ( optional ) hunts for beasts . It's very playable , enjoyable most of the time ( despite a few annoying design choices ) , but is pretty forgettable . The story won't impress you , though you'll probably like most of the characters . There's a lot of running around and getting bogged down by excessive random battles , and many of the monsters are more irritating than need-be . As an example , some monsters come with a shield that can only be taken out with a specific gun - until they're hit with that gun , they're essentially invulnerable . So what's the problem ? You'll be switching between the Shield Blaster and your actual gun of choice seemingly every other battle , and it gets very old . Maybe they could have assigned an unused button to instantly alternate guns ? That would be an improvement , but would still be irritating because these monsters typically come in large packs , and you have to go through and make sure you remove the shield from each and every one , while your moron allies sit and fruitless swing at them , usually getting spanked in the process . Another strange quirk is with loading times - right on the game's DVD case it says no loading times . Well , pretty much a lie . Press Triangle to open a menu , and GUI will pop up . . . but will not accept any input for a second or two . This is presumably the time it takes to load - just because you replace a black screen with an inert menu doesn't mean there are no loading times ! Still though , this is a good game , pretty much what I've come to expect from PS2 RPGs - worth playing , but contains none of the magic of the best PSX and SNES games .

    • 061 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Graphics : 5 / 5 This game is quite beautiful and offers a wide variety of environments to explore . The style is similar to other Level 5 games like Dragonquest VIII while still offering its own unique feel . Sound : 5 / 5 The soundtrack is soothing , varied and interesting . The pieces fit well with the settings they are used in . Themes like Timeless Town and Shadow of the Sun are worth a listen even as stand alone tracks . My only complaint is that some of the tracks are relativly short ( ~ 2 mins ) and you will hear them loop frequently if you are stuck in an area . Combat System : 4 / 5 The combat is active with required latent periods following big burst moves . This is interesting because it forces the user to block or move around while they are not attacking . The combat system can become a little dull and frustrating later in the game . The lack of healing spells means that you will be using potions frequently . Story : 3 / 5 The story is decent . The problem is not the story itself , rather the way the story is presented to the player . There is no subtlety and every turn of the story is mashed into your face through blunt voice acting that sometimes lacks proper affect . Extras / Replayability : 4 / 5 Some extras open up after you beat the game . There are a myriad of weapons and outfits to collect for each of your characters . Factory system is enjoyable but becomes a little repetitive . I tried to complete as much as possible and ended up spending 60 hours on the game . Overall : 4 / 5 The game is somewhat lacking in story and can become repetitive at times . These flaws are easily overlooked if you enjoy the styling and music that accompany them . This game is worth a play through just to see the final battle in which the main character utilizes a 20 - 30 foot long sword to dispatch of the final boss . Fun play over all .

    • 080 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Ok , i'm a huge role playing game fan , FF , skies of Arcadia , Tales , and all of those , great games , but hands down this is the winner game . The story is amazing , game play is easy to learn , and the graphics and music are great too . You will never play a better game then this one - swear ! real time fighting , and a butt stuck to the couch story , makes this the best one yet . Just combine all your favorite games , and you have this one , you'll love it ! ! !
    • 090 4  i've been playing this since yesterday morning ( on and off of course ) , and i must say , its a very good game . combat is pretty simple , although its random encounters , its pretty easy to guess when your going to fight . . . and once in the fight its action battling , you have to move around . tons of upgrades and characters to use already . and plenty of miniquests as well . quite a bit is packed into this single dvd , and i'm sure i'll be enjoying it for many many hours to come !
    • 096 4  This review is from : Rogue Galaxy ( Video Game ) Im a pretty picky gamer .
    • 103 4  Why do people like this game so much ?
    • 116 4  Yup , another bulk of reviews that completely trash a cool game because they swear final fantasy is just soooooo much better ! Look we all know that you worship final fantasy and that to you no other game will ever come close to the incredible storyline , breakthrough combat system or amazing graphics of final fantasy . . . . Yadda yadda yadda Go out and start a final fantasy cult if you want , but quit short changing excellent games that developers put ALOT of effort into creating and that ALOT of people enjoy . You know I think I'm getting a serious case of deja vu here.Remember when FF 10 first came out ? It was at the same time that a little known RPG gem was released called Shadow Hearts. The same thing happened because of the FF zealots ; everybody said that Shadow Hearts was a total waste of time and so completely terrible when it was in fact a breakthrough RPG . Look I said it once and I'll say it again ; if you love playing final fantasy SO much , then play final fantasy ! But don't get all whiney with other people because they are growing tired of a series that has been run into the ground.People like to try NEW , ORIGINAL games . The plot to FF12 ( as well as the recent FFs ) takes itself so seriously that it's incredibly terrible. And how many times do we have to see those annoying moogles and chocobos ? Me ? I'd rather sail the galaxy with a group of space pirates and fight alongside a robot , an irish accented alien , and a scantily clad tribal chick to name a few . Collecting bounties , visiting different planets , creating weapons , an easy to learn skill building system , cool soundtrack , funny voiceovers . . . Sorry final fantasy worshippers , but you're missing out . I plan to completely play through this game ( as well as a few other cool stand alone RPGs ) before I decide to delve into the humdrum tedium of FF12
    • 124 4  I rented this game last week . . . and after putting four hours of my time into it , I discovered that I put the controller down in a worse mood than when I picked it up .
