Revenge of the Ninja [VHS]

  • ) Oh the memories . . . Moving on ! 15 years or so later , I bought this movie on instinct hoping to recapture the magic that I experienced as a kid . I was surprised to find this on DVD at my local best buy , so I had to pick it up ! But when popping this disc in , I was dissapointed immediately ! ! The fight scenes are so bad it's funny ! ! Terrible choreography , acting , and yes even editing . I do agree with the other reviewers who also had similar things to say , but with that said , this movie is NOT a waste of time Yes , it was poorly shot , but it still remains a classic ninja movie . The good things that it does have are the cool costumes , weapons , and ninja tactics ! ! It is by all means , not a great example of how to soot a film , not at all . But it is , however , a great trip back to the late 80 ' s when Sho Kosugi rocked the Ninja flicks ! ! Check this movie out , only if you dig seeing the ninjas , themselves , but DON'T WATCH THIS EXPECTING TO GET A WELL EXECUTED MARTIAL ARTS FILM . For superb Martial Arts work , you want ' Hero ' or ' House of Flying daggers ' If it wasn't for all of the blood and gore , this would be a cool kids flick . This is worth a view , but not worth having in your collection , unless you collect Sho Kosugi films .
    • 001 4  This movie was inadvertently recommended to me by Amazon ( probably because I bought a couple of Jackie Chan flicks ) and immediatly I was transported back to 1984 when I used to watch this on HBO after school . I must've seen it about 30 times when it was on then . So I preordered without question when it came out on DVD about a year and a half ago . Sho Kosugi is amazing ! I couldn't believe I never sought these films out sooner ( me being a huge Bruce Lee & martial arts films fan ) . The acting is pretty laughable but what martial arts film has GOOD acting ? The music wasn't bad and I loved the theme that played while Cho ( Sho Kosugi ) was breaking the seal on his Ninja katana in the temple . That scene to this day sends chills up my spine . I got a good laugh out of how Bradon ( the evil masked Ninja ) had so many weapons on him , including a life sized decoy of himself ! Even the Indian from Grizzly Adams fame made a cameo as one of the mob boss ' goons . The biggest laugh of all was the gang in the playground . An unlikely group consisting of a biker , a martial arts thug , a cowboy , and a jive soul brother ! YMCA anyone ? LOL ! The blond floozie was a waste of space . . . As Cho said , I think she forgot her pants . And who can forget the acrobatic Oba-san ( granny ? ) The fight scenes and use of the Ninja weapons made the film . Not much on extras as there's just the theatrical trailer . It's in mono and panscan . Would've been nice in widescreen but what can you do ? It's a B movie . . . Now all they have to do is release the other movies on DVD like Enter the Ninja and Ninja III : The Domination .
    • 022 4  this movie is the definition of guilty pleasure.although sho kosugi is indeed a real life master , this movie makes him look both cool and stupid.he shows he can handle just about any weapon and can kick some ass.some of the movie's stupid scenes are when a lifesize dummy of braden pops out on the rooftop at the end and the village people like bad guys are lame.also the part where the sumo servent is raping cathy just comes off as being stupid . all in all though a movie that is good dumb fun !
    • 026 4  For years , fans had to satisfy their Sho Kosugi DVD craving with 9 Deaths of the Ninja and Black Eagle ( UGH ! ) . But that has all changed ! FINALLY , Revenge of the Ninja is on the verge of being released on DVD ! ! By far the best Sho movie out there , Revenge of the Ninja dazzles us with the mystique and ingenuity of ninjitsu . Let's face it , this movie is what inspired all 80 ' s teens to buy tabi boots and throwing stars ! As for the movie itself , the B-rated acting is easily overlooked thanks to the ninja choreography of Sho Kosugi . Fantastic fight scenes and a vast array of ninja weapons keeps the audience entertained , all the way through the climatic rooftop fight scene . If you are new to Sho Kosugi and the ninja film genre , this is a great place to get started . And keep your eyes open for the Grandma Ninja flip-across-the-room scene . . . it's great ! !
    • 036 4  Being a big ninja fan , I still don't see how people can be giving this movie 4 stars . LOL ! ! This was my FAVORITE ( I mean favorite ! ! ) movie as a kid . It made me want nothing but ninja gear for gifts , birthday presents , and Christmas too . I actually received a steel ( unsharpened ) Samurai sword from China town in LA for my 10th birthday ( Couldn't find the straight ninja swords with the square hand guard , as seen in the movies ) . I was also lucky enough to get a ninja suit and other toy ( or heavy duty ) ninja weapons , including sais and some of those thick steel ninja stars that you probably remember seeing in the late 80 ' s : ) Oh the memories . . . ! • 037 4  Man , I have been looking for this classic to come out on DVD since I got a DVD player ! This is my favorite Martial Arts movie , period . This is THE movie that inspired the Ninja craze of the early and mid 80 ' s . It made me buy Black belt magazine and order ninja suits and throwing stars , nunchakus , and the like . This movie has everything ! It has , of course , ninjas and martial arts , betrayal , sex , drugs , violence , violence , and MORE VIOLENCE ! ! ! ! I hope it comes with a few extras or commentary .

  • 004 4  The thing I remember most about this movie when I first saw it in the 80 ' s on cable tv was the part where Cathy in the film played by Blonde floozy Ashley Ferrare does a Karate work out with Sho Kosugi and when she does her first series of high kicks the viewer thinks she is wearing nothing under her Karate top but upon closer inspection you can Easily see that she is wearing a flesh colored pair of pantyhose w / out panties underneath and her crotch is covered tastily by the pantyhose.I thought this was the Most erotic martial arts scene between a man and woman ever at the time ! ! ! Its still kind of Sexy to watch ~ Mmmmmm
    • 003 4  When I first saw this film on HBO back in the 80 ' s , I loved it . But I have rented this film many times on the video version , and up to four gory scenes were edited out . It was very irritating . There is a scene where a ninja takes out two mafia guys , by cutting one of the guy's arm off , and this scene is now cut out . I really hope these four scenes are put back in if this film makes it to DVD .
    • 018 4  This is clearly the best film of the genre , and nobody was better than Sho Kosugi ! ! The story is typical but solid , and the acting is not oscar worthy , but it works with the film . Great to see it on DVD , too . I hadn't seen it in almost 20 years until recently , and it gave me chills watching it again !
    • 049 4  For anyone who liked Revenge to begin with , this DVD is a great opportunity to own a cleaner very with a few extended scenes . Yes , some of the death scenes have been extended to include some of the infamous gore that was originally cut in the U.S . and European versions . Even the trailer on the DVD teases with more scenes that were cut from the film that actually didn't make it back on this version . So , yes , this is slightly better than the video version , but it's not all it could have been , and it's not widescreen either . Bummer .
    • 051 4  This movie is very old and very campy , but it is one of the coolest ninja movies . Sho Kosugi blows away all other martial arts guys . The man playing the evil ninja currently stars in some soft pornography films on Cinemax . It is a great film though and pits good ninja vs . bad ninja for his son .
    • 055 4  what can I say ? I saw this movie first time when I was like 8 or 9 . I was looking for it for a long time and now I finally found it again. It's a great movie . Super fighting scenes , excellent music that really puts you in the mood to kick some serious butt .
    • 058 4  I like this movie because it is very well made and authentic.I love the fight scenes and the acting.I practice ninjitsu like sho so i can understand a lot of the technical stuff.I also would like to recommend ' pray for death ' .
    • 062 4  Yes , finally you can see what all the hype is about . Sho Kosugi puts on a show as a big-cocked ninja who don't take no stuff from nobody ! It's awesome when he throws those funky stars into peoples ' heads and blood goes everywhere ! It's even cooler at the end , where Sho stabs this whiteboy ninja right in his balls , and then he cuts his face open like a pig ! YUH !

  • 013 4  I saw this movie when I was twelve years old , as did my friends . I have to say I loved it . I remember I had to go to my aunts house to see it because we did'nt have a video we were all tranfixed , SHO KOSUGI made a big difference in all our childhoods , mine in particular . This film , if the time and budget is taken into account is the best ninja film of its time.LONG LIVE SHO KOSUGI .

    • Die Hard , Face off , Hard Boiled , and the Killer ; has an anime collection that includes : Baki Grappler , Shura No Taki , Fist of the North Star , and Full Metal Alchemist ; enjoys martial arts films and series which include : Naruto , Dragonball Z , Last Hurrah for Chivalry , most Jet Li films , and Ong Bak ; and myself being a black belt in Tae Kwon Do , and also practice ninjutsu I can honestly tell you that this movie in 100% terrible . The movie starts out well with a good plot , but you are immediately turned away by stupid tactics used by the ninjas in this film who appear out of nowhere and jump into the middle of the screen completely visible to everyone around them are not tactics used by ninjas . Even though a lot of people die in this movie , it still sucks ; which you can conclude from the very first fight . The story could be interesting , but very few camera angles make it hard to produce authentic fighting scenes , in which you can actually see that people are completely missing each other with their attacks , and none of the fighting scenes would rate no higher than a 1 on my scale from 1 - 100 . Having bought this movie dirt cheap , I can say that I'm glad I saved money while it was on sale . This movie was a complete waste of my time . I wanted to return the movie to the store and ask for 90 minutes of my life back + a refund for the cost of the movie . Instead of watching this movie , you would be doing something EXTREMELY more constructive . . . . . . like sitting in a chair and staring at a blank wall for an hour and a half . You couldn't pay me to watch this movie again .
      • 050 4  The best Ninja movie ever made . I really love this movie it has every thing for everybody . Non-stop martial arts ninja action , I think the entire family can have fun with this movie .
      • 054 4  I enjoyed Enter the Ninja , so I decided to give Revenge of the Ninja a try . It was even more fun than I expected . Of course it sticks to it's B-Move roots of producers Golan-Globus , and aparently it is a sequel to Enter the Ninja . Although there is NO connection , other than the star Sho Kosugi . Revenge of the Ninja stands well on its own and is actually better than Enter . The fight chorography is stupendous and really made the film more enjoyable . The fights are even better than Enter ; must be due to Kusugi staging the choreography himself . Kung Fu fans enjoy ! For more B-Action move enjoyment , see the next entry Ninja III : The Domination . Again it has nothing to do with Enter the Ninja or Revenge of the Ninja other than Kosugi , but still is fun in its B-Movie way .

    • pray for death.I myself am a practicing ninja , having studied many of the same techniques that kosugi uses in this awesome film. What makes this movie so great is that it is based on what ninjitsu is all about , protecting oneself and one's family. This film is also about revenge on those who betray you and harm your loved ones. This movie and Pray for Death are the greastest ninja films of all-time and no others even come close ! Kosugi himself is a real life practicing ninja and a stuntman who does all his own stunts . hail the great Sho Kosugi and hail real ninjitsu !

      • 048 4  Great movie with a lot of action.I was disappointed that the DVD had nothing in the way of deleted scenes .
      • 064 4  This was slow , pathetic , and laughable . I really laughed at it ! the music was terrible and the action was unrealistic . and the most ridiculous part was when the big guy was chasing the kid , the kid pointed out a window and said look superman ! and the big guy said where ? Where ? and the kid then hit him . . !

    • Revenge of the Ninja ( DVD ) I attained this movie based on two things , my love for The Cannon Group and ninjas . I will say this that The Cannon Group produced many action movies in the 1980s . The American Ninja series was produced by The Cannon Group . So the fact that Revenge of the Ninja was produced by The Cannon Group and directed by Sam Firstenberg , who went on to direct both American Ninja 1 & 2 just fueled my love for this flick . The plot is simple Cho Tanaka ( Sho Kosugi ) and his six year old son Kane come to California ( but in this version of California all of the cars have Utah license plates ) after his family is slaughtered by ninjas in Japan . Cho is in partnership with his friend Braden in opening an art gallery paying homage to Japanese art , in this case dolls . Cho doesn't know that Braden is secretly dealing heroin that is hidden inside these dolls . Well to make a long story short , Braden's secret is discovered by Kane and the former attempts to kill the little boy . I should note that Braden is an American Ninja ( not the Michael Dudikoff brand ) and is quite skilled in the martial arts . When Braden dresses as a ninja , he is dressed all in black and has a metal mask on . It actually looks kind of creepy . Digressing , Kane is a chip off the old block and knows his fair share of kung fu . As a matter of fact , it is really quite amusing watching this little kid fight . It doesn't take Cho long to realize something is amiss and he starts kicking butt and taking names . The fights in this movie are so over the top , the violence is so graphic that it actually made my mouth drop a couple of times . This movie is 26 years old and I can't think of a movie made in the past two years that could hold a candle next to it with regards to content and action . A perfect example is the fight sequence that revolves around a van . Some notably things to keep an eye open for in this movie . - A politically incorrect Indian that could be called Chief Tomahawk . - An Italian gangster who is such a diet Joe Pesci , that I call him Jack Pesci . - The fight sequence that transpires at an awesome playground . - A group of thugs that look like The Village People . - California that uses Utah license plates on their automobiles . - Torture by Jacuzzi . - An evil ninja that is nothing short of Shredder and / or Darth Vader . - A six year old who could beat up Jean-Claude Van Damme . I have never seen a film featuring Sho Kosugi until Revenge of the Ninja . I must admit Kosugi is an amazing martial artist , watching him fight is like watching Fred Astaire dance . I can't believe I haven't seen him in more movies ; perhaps he didn't make that many films . It should be noted that the little boy who plays his son , is in fact his son in real life . This piece of cinema is a revenge film in the most simplistic form and it never tried to be anything that it wasn't . I felt a real sense excitement while watching this film and it will be viewed again many times in the future . The only special feature is the trailer / preview . I am now going to find a ninja costume see if I can jump kick without blowing my back out .
      • 005 4  If you only watch one ninja movie all year , this should be the one . It's flawless . The action never stops and the kid who plays Sho Kosugi's son is especially good . He's a kid ninja ! There's also a granny ninja ! And the two main ninjas engage in some of the best fight scenes ever staged . Add to this a campy sense of humor ( one of the Mob enforcers is dressed like Tonto and fights with tomahawks that he pulls from under his vest , and some of the fight scenes involve short funny slapstick bits . And did I mention the granny ninja ? ) and you have a movie that gives you a tremendous Bang for your entertainment buck.I'm going to say that this is THE definitive ninja film of all time . This is the movie that firmly established the ninja film as a legitimate sub-genre in American film .

      • 009 4  My friends and I think this movie is the funniest thing we've ever seen . Sure , it has non-stop ninja action , but everyone has failed to mention it's awful . There's plenty of sex and violence to make it interesting of course , and the acting is quite awful . We thought it was great though . Awful special effects , a plot that made no sense ( did he ever get all of those little dolls back ? ) , a bad ninja who wears a hypnotizing mask , three people playing over 50 ninjas , the village people , an indian , and two fat chinese guys . There's also a blonde who never wears clothes and a kid who apparently , is a Dodgers fan . We spent most of the movie inserting our own dialogue and making comments , similar to Mystery Science Theatre 3000 , so it makes for a fun movie for a group of friends to sit down and watch together . Our favorite parts were when the kid gets hit by the door ( you'll know it ) and the awesomely-bad fight scenes . The guys liked the girl who didn't wear pants too , obviously . Will I own this movie ? For sure . I suggest you just give in and buy it as well , your kids will thank you for preserving the 80 ' s so well . It's so good , we saw it on Australian Showtime . . . that's impressive .
      • 010 4  . . . It's got the lot - 1 on 20 fight sequences , great stunts , fantastic B movie acting , lots of uneccessary flipping around , cool ninja tools , weapons and mystic chanting . Throw in a fair helping of gore and the odd bit of nudity , and voila . . . An 80 ' s classic . All at last on a DVD that presents the most complete cut of the film I have ever seen . The UK version has always been heavily cut ( as was the norm in the 80 ' s clampdown on violence ) , but this version not only contains the whopping 8 or so minutes cut from the UK , but also re-instates all of the cuts made in the R rated US version . So this really is the definitive version , and an absolute must for Kosugi fans , or fans of those great 80 ' s ninja flicks !
      • 011 4  This is definately my favorite Ninja Movie and I think the best Ninja Movie of all time ! I first saw this movie in 1983 , I loved it and later began studying Ninjutsu because I wanted to do that so much ! World Famous Iga-Ryu Ninjutsu Master Sho Kosugi stars in an action packed film . In this film , Master Kosugi demonstrates many traditional Ninjutsu tactics . He demonstrates many Ninja exotic weapons from the use of the Ninja-To , Shuriken , Kusari-gama , Tanto , Tekagi , and many others as well . He also demonstrates many empty-hand Tai-Jutsu techniques such as deadly bone-breaking , kicking and striking techniques , and some deadly throwing techniques . He also demonstrates rolling and flipping techniques along with some Kuji-Kiri meditation as well as stealth and sentry removal . Also he has some enemies who can do the same . Sho Kosugi fights enemy Ninjas , street thugs , armed guards , and more ! Putting so much use of exotic weapons , tools , fighting techniques , and action all together ! This movie really has alot to do with TRUE Ninja Tactics and also very realistic ! I recommend this movie to anyone who really loves Ninja Movies ! Maybe you'll learn to love Ninjutsu and Sho Kosugi as I have ! Sho Kosugi Rules !
      • 014 4  If you were to look up the term Guilty Pleasure in the dictionary , Revenge of the Ninja is what you will find ! I'm embarrassed to admit I saw this film three times in the theaters back in 1983 . It's as good ( and bad ) as I remember . The film has something for everyone . A good ninja , a bad ninja , a hot babe , offensive stereotypical villains , and wall to wall action . Although the film takes place in Los Angeles , you'll laugh out loud when you see snow covered mountains in the background of several scenes ! Sho Kosugi and real-life son Kane Kosugi provide most of the action , but the terrific Keith Vitali gets in a few licks as well . And the villains ? How about a tomahawk wielding Indian man and a drug trafficking evil ninja ? I love how the laws of physics are violated in nearly every scene . Leaping over brick walls in a single bound , tossing suriken stars like frisbees , and a crossbow-launched arrow drills itself into a concrete wall ! This is all in good fun , of course . On the downside we get threadbare acting and a distracting music score , but those are minor quibbles for a really fun movie . The film's stunt coordinator plays the cowboy thug in the playground fight scene , and Kosugi's other real-life son has a cameo as the boy who is slain in the film's opening sequence . As for the DVD , the film is presented in full frame picture and mono sound , but still looks and sounds fine . Don't look for any extras , as there are none to be found . About four seconds of footage has been added to this DVD version - a quick shot of spewing blood at the film's conclusion . Other than that , this is the same good ole ninja flick we all remember . Hail Sho Kosugi !
      • 016 4  Revenge of the Ninja isn't as good as I remember it . . . When I was younger , I loved it - but this was around the same time I was wearing Bugle Boy parachute pants . What I didn't realize when I was younger though , was how hilarious this movie was . First - the Italian mob boss . His introduction to the viewers happens when he's in a room with a bunch of gangsters , lying on the table with his shirt off and getting a massage - - - - by another gangster ! In what world do gangsters give massages to other gangsters ? It gets better though . In an affront to good taste and with a flip of the middle finger to cinematographers everywhere - the gangster sits up - and his disgusting , saggy man-boobs frame the shot in a silhouette of pure filth . It's an assault on the senses , and it's not hyperbole to describe it as a total apocalypse . The fight scenes are what this movie is about though , and believe it or not , they're not very realistic . However , that doesn't mean they aren't funny . In fact , I saw something in this movie I can't even believe : in one scene the Italian mob boss dispatches his Native American Indian bodyguard to go and scalp the ninja . Read that last sentence again . A mafia boss has an Indian bodyguard ( Indian headband , ponytails , hatchets , all of it ) working for him , and orders him to scalp a ninja . Spoiler alert : the title of this film is Revenge of the Ninja . In another scene , the ninja and his cop buddy go to ask some paroled felons some questions - except the felons are hanging out in a playground and they look like a poor man's version of the Village People . There's a Mexican biker , a blue collar worker with a dirty mustache , a big fat guy with a Mohawk , and a black dude on roller skates ( I'm serious . ) A fight ensues , and ends with the black dude on roller skates shooting his pistol at the ninja ( in a playground ) , at which point the ninja produces a throwing star from his belt buckle and throws it at the black dude on roller skates ' wrist . His wrist is then stuck to the wooden beam of a swing-set . Oh , and then cop and ninja just walk away - and the crowd parts for them . No sirens though . Shots fired at a cop and a ninja in a playground , and then they just walk away , through a crowd that just watched a ninja brawl at a playground . Awesome . Don't even get me started on the little kid fighting with the girl though . The little kid is like four years old , but this chick actually gets in a karate fight with him . . . Seriously , she fights him ! He's only four years old ! Just pick him up and drop him . When the little kid fights the neighborhood bullies - bullies that ride Huffys - well , that's a fight . It's priceless . The final fight scene is tedious and bizarre , but the way the dude squirts blood like 50 feet when he get stabbed in the stomach is awesome . It's like a fire hose of ninja blood . Truly the cherry on top of a sundae . A ninja sundae . Watch this movie or die trying .
      • 017 4  This review is from : Revenge of the Ninja ( DVD ) This is clearly the best film of the genre , and nobody was better than Sho Kosugi ! ! The story is typical but solid , and the acting is not oscar worthy , but it works with the film . Great to see it on DVD , too . I hadn't seen it in almost 20 years until recently , and it gave me chills watching it again !
      • 019 4  This movie is a ninja classic and an excellent revenge movie . Sho Kosugi is obviously a very accomplished martial artist and the fight scenes are well choreographed . The hand to hand combat , however , does not look like ninjitsu . I believe Kosugi san is demonstrating his skill in karate but it is unfortunate he could not have demonstrated more actual , ninjitsu techniques . He is much better at demonstrating ninjitsu with the various weapons . However , the best feature of this film is that it portrays the budo spirit very well and Sho is believable as a ninja . As much of knowledge of actual ninjas has been lost , we are left guessing at what they actually were like as fighters and people but something in Sho's portrayal rings true . I highly recommend this movie to anyone interested in martial arts .

      • 024 4  About 2 - 3years ago , I wrote a review that helped four out of five people , and one who e-mailed me back personally . These people didn't realize that there were extra gore scenes cut out and a big scene that was cut out towards the end . I have the 35mm trailer of the film , And I was very happy that MGM put the original trailer on there . Now if MGM could start doing original movie poster artwork for their films , because the original poster art for this film is excellent . This is the ultimate Ninja film of the 80 ' s , and now you can see it in it's full glory with every scene intact . A friend of mine has put up a neat Yahoo Group Site of Movie Trailers and T.V . Spots that I'm helping him with . I am making a special section of showing screenshots of the extra footage only in the original movie trailer of Revenge Of The Ninja . It's too bad those scenes couldn't of been added to the final cut of the film , but at least you get to see a glimpse of the trailer . I would encourage anybody who's a Ninja fan or Martial Arts Fan , to buy this terrific movie , and Amazon gives it a tremendous price for the DVD . And Drop by to visit the group site . . .
      • 025 4  This and Rage Of Honor are good Ninja movies , Cheesed action packed and looks clean and crisp but why did MGM release the two Ninja flicks in full screen ! Lazy maybe ? It makes the fight scenes look cluttered . Well TV widscreen is the way of the future so I think I'll pass this edition and hope a widescreen version is released , I'll rent it , or just buy some Japanese import of the movie . Thanks for nothing MGM !
      • 027 4  Sho Kosugi is not well known for his acting or writing skills , but when it comes to hurling multiple throwing stars and carving up taunting thugs with a sword he's unmatched ! ! ! This is the best of the 80 ' s ninja flicks . The fight choreography for the time is entertaining and inventive , and the plot . . . . . well let's face it the fight scenes rock and that's all we care about RIGHT ? ! !
      • 029 4  Okay . . . Sho Kosugi ( star ) and Sam Firstenberg's ( director ) first efforts ( excluding Kosugi's minor appearance in Enter the Ninja ) . Though full of holes in the story , this is THE BEST ninja flick made . Full of action , excessive-gore , unneeded nudity and language , it has everything you can ask for in a popcorn-movie . Don't forget it was made in 1983 - - AND for around $850,000 ( low-budget at that time still ) . The only thing that puzzles me is that the theatrical version is different then the video versions . HBO showed the theatrical version ( with extented scenes with blood and gore ) , but for some reason MGM / UA decided to cut a few gory moments from the video release . Almost 20 years later , I still don't understand why : They were both rated-R so why cut anything ? But sit back and enjoy this popcorn-flick - - BUT only if you enjoy the action-films of the 80s !
      • 031 4  Ninjas ! Ninjas ! Ninjas ! Ninjas ! Ninjas ! You want ninjas ? Look no further coz this film has ninjas up the wazoo . This was part of a series of films put out by our buddies at Cannon pictures that started a 20 minute ninja craze back in the 80s . I remember that too . Well , you couldn't pick a better selection for late night macheezmo action flick viewing . The plot's not important-some revenge / drug smuggling claptrap . This flick has everything you want from a ninja film : A rear kickin ' ninja hero , his cool but not as rear kickin ' sidekick , a female villian with a heart of gold , a ninja kid , an old lady ninja ( ! ) , a white villian ninja ( ! ! ) , a moronic mafia godfather ( who continues to try and rip off the ninjas even though they keep hacking his family into teriyaki chicken ) , a native american kung fu thug ( who attacks with tomahawks ) , and an army of bloodthirsty ninjas ! Our hero is continuously attacked by groups of assailants ( who attack one at a time ) who keep coming at him even though he's making coleslaw out of everyone . Some of them are Village People who hang out on a park bench . This film uses all those ninjas gadgets we've come to love : The blow gun , throwing stars , spikes , swords , flamethrowers ( ? ) , staffs with fancy junk that shoot out of them , and those curvey axe thingees . This is one of the most entertaining action films I have ever seen . No bull . You don't see anything half this cool in modern Hollywood action films , I'll tell you that . As I'm sure you've read , the dvd is nothing to brag about , but just be thankful that you can at least get this movie again . Buy it . Watch it . Live it .
      • 033 4  This review is from : Revenge of the Ninja ( DVD ) This is my favorite ninja movie and I'm very excited about it coming to dvd . The fight scenes are very good and entertaining . Sho Kosugi is the real deal and obviously has studied ninjitsu . As much as I like this movie , it's not perfect . There are some scenes that defy credulity such as when the bad ninja places dummy ninjas in certain areas when he couldn't have possibly brought them with him or when he pulls out his flame thrower . If you can overlook these minor flaws , you'll really enjoy this movie if you like campy , martial arts movies . As a bonus , the supporting actress , Ashley Ferrare , is very good and fun to watch . The plot is pretty standard except for the fun twist of pitting the mob vs . ninja ( guess who wins that one ! ) . All of the acting is better than it should be and the fight scenes excellently choregraphed . Highly recommend !

      • 035 4  I first saw this feature when I was twelve . To say that I was captivated , is an understatement . To me , these guys were sort of invincible martial artists . Nothing I had ever seen before in US films , only in kung fu theatre ( which I found to be somewhat ridiculous and dull when there was no fighting ) . These ninjas had all these amazing tricks and abilities , I thought they were so cool . To watch this for the first time as a kid was pretty exciting . After this movie and then the TV show the master , the ninja explosion took off in America . As far as the movie itself goes , it is still fun to watch , even today . Don't expect Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon here . This is a b action movie without a doubt , but it's a cult classic . Great fighting scenes , surrounded by mediocre acting and storyline . There's plenty of eye candy to keep it entertaining throughout , despite it's major flaws . My only complaint was the vhs tape version's ending . I remember the evil ninja taking a lot more damage and spraying blood at the end . It may have been a little too gory to keep , but now the end looks edited and rushed .
      • 038 4  Is this a 5 star movie . Of course not . Not compared to English patient , enemy at the gates . But as an American ninja movie it is . You cannot expect style , plot and substance to a low budget ninja film . It is just not going to happen . So going into this film with that in mind then you will probobly enjoy this . There is alot of action and alot of it is in the black gi and mask that just looks so cool . All the ninja goodies are here . Ninja-to , shuriken , cat's claws , blow gun , tetsu-bishi . The hero uses everything traditional and the villain alot of modern stuff . Made for some interesting ideas . Some of the film is just bad . Ninja grandma doing tumbling passes is a little much . And the half naked female student and sex scene did nothing for the story . Just a little sensationalism . For all it's flaws I still enjoy this film alot . The fight at the beginning of the film is my favorite . There are some excellent Japanese ninja films . But they are only being released very slowly over here .
      • 041 4  Bad acting , stupid martial arts sequences , a no brainer plot , more bloopers than in any other movie I remember , and you could add a hot chick that never gets actually naked on the whole flick . Yet this movie rocks ! ! ! I do not really understand why people like this movie so much ( me included ) but they do . Perhaps the best of the 80 ' s ninja movies . To bad there has never been an actual historically based ninja movie made in the u.s . I would really like to see a good remake of this movie , perhaps Sho could play the grandfather .
      • 043 4  Thank you ! This product arrived shortly after the order was placed . Revenge Of The Ninja is an American film from 1983 . This film is a rare gem . It is one of a kind and a masterpiece in its own right ( they don't make them like this anymore ) . It is not an easy film to watch , it is heart-rending from the opening scenes to its final scenes . This film involves an assasination wipeout of a family , Japanese traditional views on family , great cast of actors ( Sho Kosugi and his real-life son Kane Kosugi , Keith Vitali , Arthur Roberts , Virgil Frye , Ashley Ferarrre ) . Demonstrations of physical stamina ( amazingly shot high-speed van getaway with Sho Kosugi surfing on top of it ) and marshal arts discipline . The film features an American ninja ( played by Arthur Roberts ) a sinister character , when in a ninja outfit he's capable of silent , quick and always deadly assasinations of those who cross him . What makes this American ninja intriguing is his shiny silver devil mask he wears as part of his outfit making him a kind of devil incarnate with whom the good Japanese ninja ( Sho Kosugi ) has to do the final battle . Shot with beautiful views of Utah's mountain ranges looming in the background through out the film and awesome original music by Rob Walsh and directed by Sam Firstenberg this film features many poignant death scenes including that of a police liutenant ( played by Keith Vitali ) . The film ends with the destruction and demasking of an evil entity by the pure at heart and reunion of father and son on top of American Towers building . This is an inspiring film that pits the viewer on the side of all that is good and just . Darie Petrovic March 2009 NYC , NY
      • 044 4  This review is from : Revenge of the Ninja ( DVD ) I purchased the Ninja movies Ninja 1 : Enter the Ninja . Ninja 2 : Revenge of the Ninja , and Ninja 3 : The Domination . Revenge of the Ninja was less goofy out of the three and you have to be a Shô Kosugi fan to truly appreciate the film . Ninja stunts range from secret shuriken belts to spitting darts in a guys face ( ouch ) . All in all a great purchase for any ninja fan . For other ninja enjoyment check out the Shinobi No Mono series .

      • 046 4  If you only watch one ninja movie all year , this should be the one .
      • 052 4  I saw this movie when I was a kid , that was before kids started doing all the stuff they saw on a TV screen . One of the BEST ninja movies ever ! Though the ninja craze is porbably over now , when I think of that time I only have one picture in mind : Sho Kosugi pulling out his sword or meditating in full ninja gear , and throwing stars all over the place with such admirable precision . The guy is THE man ! I miss these movies , when you didn't have to think about how good the acting was . Actually , you didn't even know what the story was about , all you could think of was that final face-off . Good Stuff !
      • 053 4  When I was 18 I watched this movie and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread . When the bad ninja caught the small knife , flashing in the sun , I thought that was about the coolest . Or when he came out of the air vent in the celing and killed the 2 guys . I thought the bad ninja was a better ninja , but you know he had to lose . Too bad they dont make movies like this anymore . . . . Bruce Lee moves too fast to appreciate his skills , but these Ninjas are awesome ! I love that TV ad from Rogers where the guy is slow motion viewing Bruce kick this guy in the head like 4 or 5 times . . Bruce you got that quarter you owe me ? No I dont ! Then Bruce kicks him in the head 4 or 5 times . Whack Whack Whack ! Whack ! Whack ! Thats cold !
      • 056 4  The story is about a ninja who leaves Japan , his home , to flee his past . His whole family is brutily murdered except for his son and his mom . He takes them to america where he hopes to find a new life with the help of his friend . His friend betrays him having dealing with drugs with Sho ( the ninja ) not knowing he is using him . Well his friend , who is an evil ninja , takes out his enemeys in the process murders Sho's mother and Sho's little boy Cain witnesses the murder and sees the mans face . The evil ninja captures Cain and with the help of and old friend that does karate Sho must once again become the ninja that he tried to bury inorder to save his son and kil the evil ninja . In an exsposive show down the two ninjas use their deadly skills to fight eachother ! ! My honest opinion is that this is an awesome movie ! The ninja's skills are awesome and although the story needed a little work the fight scenes are worth watching .
      • 057 4  What a car wreck of a movie ! It's so bad you can't help but to watch it . Another film with the Golan-Globus seal of quality ! Yeesh ! ! Nobody can act in this film except the kid , who outdoes everybody ! Painful dialogue , lousy production values and Salt Lake City , Utah standing in for Los Angeles . Think of this film as a showcase for the wide array of ninja weaponry / gadgets shown and used and it's sort of worth your time . Expect any more than that and you will be sorely dissappointed . Real 80 ' s cheese at it's best ( or is it worst ? ) . The gangbangers look like rejects from a Village People audition ! Was this supposed to look menacing back then ? ? ! This film , however , did start a ninja craze back in the 80 ' s and was popular enough for ninjitsu master ( and star ) , Sho Kushugi , to make several more films ( most went straight to video ) , and appear in a TV series ( The Master , starring Lee Van Cleef as a ninja ! Sho was his ninja arch enemy and made several appearances in the show ) . All this being said , I was impressed with the video quality of this dvd . The video is so sharp and clear that if it wasn't for the cars and clothes that gave away the true age , you would've sworn they just shot the film yesterday ! It's not letterboxed , which is a shame , but since this plays like a bad made-for-cable-tv movie , it fits the full-screen format very well . If you're a ninja fan or want the nostalgia trip of seeing this film again ( I hadn't seen it since I saw it in theaters as a teenager way back when ) , you might have fun with it . Everybody else , stay far away . . . !
      • 059 4  I remember these movies from the 80s ( my teenage years ) , and remember that I really loved them . I vaguely remembered some really slick fighting techniques , along with some supernatural elements as far as Ninja powers being passed-off to unsuspecting everyday joes , and the ninja secret ( as well as its implements of destruction ) being kept in a cave somewhere in the foothills of Southern California . . . Well , I was wrong . The first Ninja movie ( Enter the Ninja ) was so stupid and corny , I couldn't even watch it and , thankfully , had nothing whatsoever to do with the other two . The second one was not much better . It was much less slick and polished than I remember , had a lot of the same cornball stuff that was in the first one , and only a hint ( albeit in a cornball way ) of the supernatural element that I thought I remembered . The third one , though the most luducrous story-wise , is probably the best . It has the slickest production values , as well as the most cold-hearted brutal ninja-style killings that we all bought these movies for to begin with .
      • 061 4  Well , I just finished watching this movie , and let me tell you that it is really BAD . I mean i like Ninja and martial art movies , i also remember watching Ninja 3 the domination about 6 - 7 years back , and i remember that it was a great ninja movie . But this piece of crap is a total waste of time . I have been reading some of the reviews posted here , and im quit surprised by the number of positive reviews for it , i mean what is positive about this film ? . . let me answer that . . NOTHING ! It has poor acting , one of the worst acting i have ever seen , from the silly Mafia boss to the lame old japanese lady ( sho's Mom ) , im not sure if these actors need to be paid , and im not sure if we can call them actors . However , Sho does an acceptable job , Not bad ! It also has bad and poor fight scenes , the fights were slow , silly and most of the times you can't tell whats happening . they were also fake , its quit clear that Sho is not hitting his enemies , poor stunt performance , And the editing of the film was also bad and poorly done , the film editing just jumps quickly from scene to scene . I only gave this film 2 stars because of the hot blonde girl ( cathy ) , and because the effort of Sho trying to make something out of it . My advice to you guys is to stay away from this movie , Do'nt waste time nor money in watching this crap , if you want a really cool movie , just stick to Ninja 3 the domination , or go watch 3 Ninjas ( kids movie ) which was better than this awful movie . I just can't wait for Ninja 3 to be realesed on DVD .

    • Revenge of the Ninja ( DVD ) What we have here is collectively one of the most typically awesome Cannon Films productions , the strongest of all Sho Kosugi vehicles , and arguably the best ninja movie ever made , period . So much can be said for a film that simultaneously presents both bottom-of-the-barrel cheesiness and top-of-the-line action content , but for now , just know that if you're looking for quality fare in any of the three aforementioned areas , this is definitely one to pick up . If you're in it for good acting and basic realism , steer clear . . . but if you need a massive overdose of black hoods and shuriken , line up ! The story : after his family is murdered by a group of ninjas , ninjutsu master Cho Osaki ( Kosugi , Ninja Assassin ) and his young son and elderly mother travel to America to embrace entrepreneurship with the help of Cho's friend and business partner Braden ( Arthur Roberts , Air America - The Complete Series ) , leaving behind the ninja lifestyle . . . but when a mysterious masked assassin makes his presence known in a black market war between Braden and gangster Tony Chifano ( Mario Gallo , Raging Bull ) and his own family is put in danger , Cho is obligated to embrace his deadly talents once again . The first five minutes of the movie made me apprehensive : Kosugi's opening fight with the murdering ninjas is a practice in mediocrity : appropriately violent but sloppily choreographed from beginning to end . Luckily , the ensuing battles include a few for the ages . Kosugi himself doesn't don the enigmatic cowl and jumpsuit until the last 15 minutes , but right up until the end - with the aid of karate champion Keith Vitali ( Wheels on Meals ) and ninja double Eddie Tse - he supplies some stellar weapons-inclusive martial arts encounters as action choreographer , particularly the one he has with Vitali against a group of thugs on a playground , which can still match just about any fight done by other action heroes of his generation . Be warned : the movie's camp value is worth its weight in gold but is likely to suffocate anybody who doesn't appreciate B-movie charm . Take your pick from at least a dozen heavyweight examples of bad acting and logic-bending character interactions , but my favorite is a scene in which little Kane Kosugi - Sho's real-life son , future star of D.O.A . - Dead or Alive , only eight at the time but looking more like six - demonstrates his legitimately advanced ninjutsu skills in a fully-fledge fight against Ashley Ferrare ( Cyclone [ VHS ] ) , a woman almost twice his size who literally gets thrown around the mat by him . It's a segment fit for a time capsule , but like many other instances in the film , it's guaranteed to alienate folks who only like serious martial arts fare , so know yourself well before indulging . Oh , and be sure to get the DVD version , deal dogs - it includes the complete uncut version of the film , mainly inclusive of several violent killings that were censored in the VHS release ( fall face-first on tiny metal jacks , anybody ? ) . Get it any which way you can to introduce yourself to and revere one of action's all-time greats : six years after this was released , hearing Kosugi's name was a rarity , and even nowadays he remains obscure in the mainstream , despite being the very best at what he does . Get it !
      • 002 4  Anyone who , like me , grew up watching this film will be celebrating at long last a DVD release , which is well overdue . The best news of all , is that for the first time ever , we are getting the most complete cut of the film to be released . Previous home VHS releases in the USA have had numerous scene cuts and it's even worse in the UK , where whole sections were cut out . However , the restrictions on film violence have changed over the years which means that for this DVD release , everything is in . By that I mean , the shuriken fighting , the face injuries , the nunchakus , even the ridiculous blood spurt at the end - all in . Whether these improve the film is debatable - but for Sho Kosugi and martial arts fans - at least we are now getting the whole picture . The DVD features the original trailer - which contains yet more scenes that would never make the final cut - and are forever lost . Although the DVD is light on extras , it does present the film with a very crisp and wonderful newly mastered DVD print - everything looks better than ever before . It's still silly . But it happens to be the best ninja film ever made , and Sho Kosugi's finest hour . A must-see that goes into the collection with the Bruce Lee epics .
      • 008 4  I purchased the newer VHS copies of the 3 movies in this series back in 2000 , so when this dvd was released I saw that it was still in standard format and passed . Today I ended up watching the dvd and was shocked to discover that the VHS copy contained an edited version of the film with MUCH less gore . When watching my tapes I had thought that I remembered there being a bit more to some of the kills but had attributed that to simply being false memories from my childhood . Now I see that I was correct in my suspicions . If you're a fan of this series of films that passed on this DVD for the same reason as I did , this is a definite must purchase disc ! Now if only they'd release NINJA III on dvd . ( note : this is only in reference to the newer vhs version of this film featuring the same cover design as the dvd )
      • 032 4  this is one of my favorite films of all time and the only good ninja movie , until Christopher Lambert made The Hunted . i had been waiting years for Revenge . . . to be put on DVD , but am very disappointed . regardlees of the unavoidable campiness that comes with action movies that have low budgets , Kosugi's character is very interesting . it reminds me of Pacino's Michael Corleone being pulled back into his life of crime in Godfather 3 . revenge of the ninja is most definitely a classic . unfortunately , this DVD is not worth buying because it only has the Full screen version and no extras . unless you simply enjoy having it on DVD , you may as well stick with the VHS . you get exactly the same thing , but without the fancy technology . i don't know if this film was shot in widescreen or not , but personally , the full vision ( widescreen ) is the only reason to go with DVD . as film is a visual medium , the photography is just as important if not more so in any well made film . it's like trying to read a novel that has had every other page torn out .

Get it !
      • 047 4  To be honest their aren't that many decent ninja movies out there . The problem is down to the fact that the Martial Art Ninjutsu has been sensationalised by the Media who know very little if nothing about it . What this movie did along with the first one was bring the art of the ninja into the main stream . If it's good old-fashioned 80 - style action you're after then this is about as good a ninja movie your going to get . But on the other hand if you want a more realistic version you may want to take a look at Shogun , Shinobi no mono or wait for the Last Samurai to come to DVD . If 80 ' s ninja movies is you're thing then this is the best of a bad bunch . Buy this one or Enter the Ninja but forget the rest from this period .
