Pokemon SoulSilver Version

  • 013 4  My grandson recently celebrated his 11th b'day . He had been asking for this game for weeks on end - so I purchased it for him . He was thrilled when he opened his gift - just what I wanted ! ! He did say it was kind of hard , but I'll keep at it - and I know he will ! ! Thanks AMAZON - once again , a job well done ! ! I have never been disappointed - or had to return an item - and , always on time !
    • 048 4  My grand-daughter just had to have this game and since it was cheaper on amazon than in a nearby store I ordered it from them ( the free shipping didn't hurt either ) . She couldn't wait to play it and wasn't disappointed , she says it is so much fun , now she wants the gold one ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
    • 075 4  I have been collecting all of the Pokemon games for the Gamboys . This by far has been the best . It has taken the best of all of the games and made a quality product . My favorite part is having your pokemon tag along behind you . I always liked that about the yellow version .
    • 084 4  We had to go online and find out how to catch some of the pokemon . We were able to find the answers , thanks to all of the players . My son could not put this down for the first few days he had it . Its a great game !

  • Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I won't go into all the features of Soul Silver because by and large this is nothing more than an upgrade of previous games . There are zero new Pokemon but there are huge opportunities to fill in gaps in collections . I managed to obtain some of the rarest Pokemon that I've never had a chance to snag before including Mewtwo and Ho-oh . Even many of the non-legendaries that were still tough , if not impossible to get in previous games are available . For me the starter Pokemon may be harder to get than legendaries since you only get your choice of one of three when the game starts with the other two being completely unavailable . One nice thing about Soul Silver is that it gives you a starter Pokemon from Kanto and later in the game one from Johto and one from Hoenn . I managed to get a Cyndaquil , Squirtle and Torchic in one game . None of the ultra-rare event only Pokemon like Mew , Arceus and Celebi are available without , again , going to an event ( and I hear a rumor that Mew will be available eventually in a WiFi event that anyone can easily get ) . So that's it for what's available to those who want to catch ` em all . What I will focus my review on is the one new big feature of the series , that being the Pokewalker . There is no doubt in my mind that the Pokewalker existence is a direct response to the growing epidemic of child obesity . The big question is whether it's properly designed to meet its goal . I found that the Pokewalker exceeded my expectations and might just open up a new frontier in gaming . The Pokewalker is a pedometer that can also serve as a kind of pseudo Pokeball . In fact it's even designed to resemble a Pokeball except for the fact that it isn't spherical . In order to get your Pokemon into the Pokewalker you need to place it in front of you DS and press a button to connect and the data will stream over . Naturally you can also return your Pokemon and a good day of moving about should raise you Pokemon up a level as well as increase its happiness . As a pedometer the Pokewalker will count the amount of steps you take and store up ` watts ' that can be traded in for chances at Pokemon or items . Any watts left over when you return your Pokemon to the DS will get saved and when you collect enough watts new areas for walking open up . When I say areas I'm referring to the area that your Pokemon will walk in and the other Pokemon you encounter will differ based on the area you send your Pokemon . For the player , running , biking , riding the elliptical , doing housework , walking to school and so on will generate watts . For ten watts a player has a chance to catch a Pokemon using the three buttons on the Pokewalker . For 3 watts a player can try for an item . Catching a Pokemon is pretty simple and you'll probably succeed more often than fail except in the case of harder Pokemon . Using a Wifi event I opened up a route called Winner's Path and had a heck of a time getting Munchlax , one of the few Pokemon that continues to elude me . There are unlimited balls and any damage to your Pokemon heals at the beginning of each battle . There are three levels of Pokemon per area and the more steps a player accumulate in a day the rarer Pokemon they can catch . The Pokewalker succeeds because it encourages players to move around quite a bit in a single day in order to get better Pokemon and it encourages them to stay active by having environments that are locked until hundreds of thousands of watts are accumulated . There are just tons of Pokemon available in the Pokewalker including some that are quite difficult to obtain . The best one I saw was Spiritomb but that one requires a whole lot of watts so a player will need to move around quite a bit . There are no legendary Pokemon in the Pokewalker and personally I think it would have been nice if it included something like Celebi although perhaps it's difficult to limit a capture to just one with the Pokewalker which would mean player could conceivably load up on multiple legendaries if one was available . I really can't say whether kids are actually moving about more to capture more Pokemon but this is definitely the kernel of an idea that could take off . It's quite likely that video games bear at least some measure of responsibility for childhood obesity and it's nice to see Nintendo trying to reverse the trend .
    • 001 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I'm going to start right out with it . BUY THIS GAME ! This game is amazing on many fronts which is why it deserves a buy if you have a DS ( maybe even buy a DS to play this game ) . Gameplay : 10 / 10 The gameplay is as fresh as ever . The formula that GameFreak put down so many years ago still works . If you have already played any of the previous Pokemon games , there are basically no changes , other than the fact of the addition of a few minigames and a pokemon can walk behind you . For newcomers , here's how the Pokemon formula works : You start an adventure with a starter pokemon , and then train to become the best pokemon trainer in the world . You do this by defeating other trainers who roam the land while also catching some extra pokemon of your own . The formula is straight up addictive and the plot is also well done . Graphics : 8 / 10 It's pokemon on the DS . The game uses the same graphics engine as Diamond , Pearl and Platinum and yes , the graphics aren't top notch . I have definitely seen better on the DS ( Mario Kart being a great example ) , but once again , the entire point of Pokemon is the gameplay and the replay value , not the graphics . As a plus however , many trainers have new animations and some gyms just look really , REALLY good . The atmosphere outside of special events could've used some work though . Sound : 7 / 10 I will admit it , I am getting a bit disappointed with GameFreak recycling their 8 - bit recorded cries for the Pokemon on every single game . These cries are the same we had 10 years ago . On the other hand , the overall soundtrack is really good , and I have also heard there is a way to get the original soundtrack back in the game by achieving a certain item . In general , the sound is ok , but I think GameFreak needs to do a little overhaul with the Pokemon cries . Replay Value : 15 / 10 ARE YOU KIDDING ME ? 16 BADGES ! 3 TOTAL STARTERS YOU CAN GET ! Straight up epic . I , in my own right , already thought that all the other games that only had 8 badges and one region were long enough , but WOW . This game is amazing ( I already had the Japanese version , and have played to the second Elite Four , and it's taken me a good 40 hours already ) in this criteria for sure . Final Verdict : If you have a DS , BUY THIS GAME . If you don't , BUY A DS , and then BUY THIS GAME . Amazing characters , amazing battles , amazing starter pokemon ( who doesn't love them a nice Typhlosion ? ) , and great replay value . You won't be disappointed .

    • 003 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Okay , so I've been playing Pokemon games since the original Red and Blue here in the US . The Gold / Silver / Crystal trio were , and still are , my favorite of the series ( Crystal obviously being the best , since it was for the Game Boy Color and it had a load more stuff in it ) . These remakes are very much a welcome thing , as they've used the engine from Diamond / Pearl / Platinum , and the experience has been brought up to date . All sorts of new things to do , having any Pokemon of your choice follow you around is pretty neat , though not a selling point , loads of extras ( you can catch most Pokemon in the series in these two remakes , as a way to try to phase out the GBA games / slot on the DS Lite and move on to the DSi and DSi XL ) , and the fact that this game has much more length than the average Pokemon game ( you go to the Johto region for the 8 badges there , then you head to Kanto for the 8 badges there , 16 total ) , this is a very nice package deal . The Pokewalker , while , again , not a selling point , is a really neat addition as well . Catching Pokemon on the run , walking and gaining EXP for the Pokemon of your choice is a really cool addition . I go on almost daily walks with my dog , so the Pokewalker is a really cool addition for me personally , cause now I can take my Pokemon with me and level up while I walk . All of the additions ( Groudon , Kyogre , Rayquaza , three sets of starter pokemon obtainable in one game , Pokeathalon , Global Trade , etc . ) make for a lengthy quest , and the ammount of time you can spend playing these games if you truly know the ins and outs of leveling , EV training , natures and whatnot , you can truly have a game that you can and will play for years . If you're not a fan of Pokemon , or have never picked up one of the games , this is a perfect game to get you going . Lots of fun , amazing ammount of time to spend doing all the things there are to do . And , if you have what it takes to get all of the 493 ( staggering , isn't it ? I remember how stoked I was when I finally got all 151 on the original Red ) Pokemon , you truly . . . have more patience than me . None the less , it's a lot of fun , being able to trade and battle just add more , and the new Pokewalker all add up to a very great deal for your money . It's been ten years since Gold and Silver hit the shelves , and this is an amazing reawakening for those games .

    • 008 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) This game is pretty much based off of the Pokemon games : Diamond , Pearl , and Platinum . Some of the newer things based off of it was the touch screen and also the addition to the pokemon 4th generation is the poke sprites . Then again the newer ideas of the walking with your first inline fighting pokemon is a nice touch becasue I have heard some people ask for that a long time ago and so I have come to quickly liking this feature . Also the other interesting thing that I enjoyed about it is that you can venture off to the extended lands of Kanto , and be able to fight all of the other gym leaders . One other thing that was good about it was the graphics were amazing , not just in the battling aspect , but the starting frame ( opening touch here to start ) then the other feature was the other newer pics of original pokemon , all the while following the old game . so as an overall experience with this game , it is fun and quite interactive , but not the I'll sit on the couch and ignore everyone else , due to the newest edition to the pokemon legacy the PokeWalker .

    • 014 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Being an old Fan of Pokemon , I was so excited to see the updated version of the Silver game . I have the old GBA games , so I had to try it out . I was not disappointed , and the added bonus of the pokewalker makes it more worth while . Being a student , it's hard to find time to just sit back , relax , and do some gaming . But , with the walker , while in school or slaving away doing work at home or whatever , you're furthering your game and training your team just by walking . It's so handy ! Thank you for the prompt shipping !

    • 020 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) So , pretty much like everyone else , I too played this game ten years ago . . . . and it was my favorite next to Red version of course . When I heard these games were being remade all I could think was about time ! but with remakes comes enjoyment and disappointment , and for the most part I've seen no disappointments . It's like playing the original silver version x 10 . These games are EXCELLENT and gamefreak / nintendo put alot of effort into these games and it shows . With the obvious Johto and Kanto Pokemon you can also trade right away with diamond , pearl , and platinum ! You can also migrate endlessly with ruby , sapphire , leaf green , fire red , and emerald . So , for the nostalgia freaks such as myself you WILL NOT be disappointed , it's the exact same game from ten years ago but its been enhanced dramatically so you're not playing the same game , but you're also playing somewhat of a new game also with all of the new features added . This game is a 12 / 10 for me and any Pokemon fan or previous fan should have these games . IMO I think these games are the definitive versions for Generation 4 ! And if you don't have em ' already then WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR ? ! It even comes with a pokewalker ( pedometer ) so how could you go wrong ? you can't

    • 022 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I remember playing the original Pokemon Crystal game when I was younger , and it always has been my favorite Pokemon game . Then sadly I lost it , and was unable to play it anymore . So when I heard that a remake was coming out , I was overjoyed . So the main question becomes : Was it worth the wait ? GREAT Things About The Game : - You can explore two regions , which for some reason hasn't been applied in recent games that came after Gold / Silver / Crystal - The addition of the Pokeathlon , which adds several more hours to gameplay - The Battle Frontier ( see disappointments , however ) - Your lead Pokemon now follows you around , which I found to be very cute and entertaining - The Pokewalker , which allows your Pokemon to level up even when you have to go places . You even get exercise yays ! : D - The Safari Zone is back ! ! ! I was seriously ticked when they deleted it from the Kanto Region . Okay Things About The Game : - Surfing speed is now back to normal . ( In Pearl / Diamond it was reduced to a snail's pace . ) - Graphics have improved since Pearl / Diamond / Platinum Disappointments About The Game : ( yes , it's true . - The Battle Frontier is exactly the same as it was in Pokemon Platinum , and it's STILL not as good as the one in Emerald . Whyyyyyyy ! ? ! ? ! ? ! ? ! : ( - When you finally beat Red on Mt . Silver , NOTHING HAPPENS . I almost threw my DS against the wall when that happened . - The plot is very thin . Although this is typical in the standard Pokemon RPG games , it's still a disappointment . - The Safari Zone is seriously SMALL . I'm not ' kiddin folks . Well , there you have it . Whether or not you buy the game is entirely up to you . I found it to be okay , not one of my all-time favorites . It does have several post-game things to do , like the Battle Frontier and Pokeathlon . It's a good way to kill time if you're waiting for other games to come out . If you're a hardcore Pokemon fan like myself , simply buy it just to buy it . All in all , it's a game that had some good ideas that could have been applied a bit better .

I managed to obtain some of the rarest Pokemon that I've never had a chance to snag before including Mewtwo and Ho-oh . One nice thing about Soul Silver is that it gives you a starter Pokemon from Kanto and later in the game one from Johto and one from Hoenn .
    • 031 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I won't go into all the features of Soul Silver because by and large this is nothing more than an upgrade of previous games . • 033 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I grew up playing the original Silver Version on Game Boy Color for hours and hours on end and it gave me a thrill that no other game gave me at that time . It was fun , innovative and , in my opinion , a lot better than the former Blue and Red versions . I was hoping for a while that Nintendo would remake this wonderful game and when I heard that they were I was extremely excited to see a modern day Gold and Silver . This game truly lives up to the hype . First off it's fun , from the battling to the exploring , the graphics are amazing for the DS , and the best feature of all . . . the feature of being able to go back to Kanto to fight all the other 8 gym leaders there , which means 16 badges ! This game is challenging yet simply entertaining . It brings all the best parts of the Pokemon RPGs and blends them together quite amazingly . You must simply try this game if you are a DS owner . : )
    • 035 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) It never ceases to amaze me how many Japanese firms subscribe to the philosophy of kaizen , or continuous improvement . Pokemon Platinum was a blast to play , but it had many deficiencies that appeared to be fixed with SoulSilver . SoulSilver fixes many of those problems and includes a Pokewalker that is fun to use and very useful at the same time . The music quality is excellent and many of the overtures reminded me of the anime . The 3D rendering of Lugia flying through the ocean floor was superb and shows the power of the Nintendo DS / DSi / DSi XL . The in-game graphics are very good although there's not a huge difference from Platinum and other 4th generation games . The best part about SoulSilver is the updated menu system for items and other in-game activities . Platinum required scrolling a wheel with the stylus that became cumbersome and annoying after doing it for the 300th time . The bicycle no longer has gears like in Platinum , it's 1 speed only and it works fine . The use of 2 registered items is also a big plus . I frequently like to use the fishing rod and it made no sense to register only 1 item at a time . Now , pressing Y activates your first registered item while you can touch the second one via the menu . The Pokewalker is a fantastic add-on to the game . I am able to exercise and level up my Pokemon at the same time . The one thing I would change with the walker is allow multiple leveling of Pokemon rather than waste my steps by stopping when it levels up . In addition , allowing the Pokemon to learn moves automatically would save me time as well . Then I could return it to the DS and pick the moves I want to keep . I couldn't get the walker to register steps when I taped it to my ceiling fan , but a lot of people seemed to have found cheats using various contraptions . The Pokegear system is not very easy to use . The radio isn't intuitive , and the cellphone has to be the dumbest idea ever . Everytime some Joe or Jane schmo calls me up , it's to discuss a mundane topic . The mother calls ( if you give her a cut of your earnings ) to tell you how she bought you some items and to go pick them up from the Pokemart . The older Pokewatch system from Platinum was very nice and had useful functions . Pros : Another excellent Pokemon game for the DS , although it is a remake of Silver / Gold . The menu system is vastly improved , and the Pokewalker is fun to use . Cons : Pokegear is a downgrade from the Pokewatch in Platinum . Overall : 4 / 5

The gameplay is similar , but this version allows for a lot more extensive gameplay , with a seemingly unending supply of quests to do .

    • 049 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I just got this game and I am very pleased with it . I played the original Pokemon Silver back when it came out around 10 years ago . I absolutely loved the original and when I found out that there was a remake I had to get it ! I highly recommend this game to those of you who enjoyed the original . If you have never played Pokemon before , this is the game to start with ! Great graphics , and game play . For those of you who played the original , you will be very happy to see the enhanced game play . I have played Pokemon Red , Blue , Yellow , Crystal , Sapphire and Ruby ( through the end of the game ) . By far my favorite was Silver . I am not familiar with Pokemon Diamond , Platinum , Leaf Green or Pearl so I cannot give a comparison . The touch screen controls are very enjoyable . Overall a great buy . If you like Pokemon I believe it would be safe to say give it a try . The PokeWalker is a wonderful addition to an already jam packed game . With the PokeWalker you can place one of your Pokemon on the device and take it for a stroll . The longer you stroll , the more watts you get . When you get certain quantities of watts you can search for gifts ( berries , eithers , potions and the like ) or even catch a Pokemon ! Watts also unlock new locations to stroll . If you go online to the Pokemon website you can even unlock the Yellow Forest ! A forest filled with Pikachu , some have special abilities such as knowing the move surf . Everyone enjoys different kinds of games so as with any purchase make your best judgment before committing . Some people love this game and others hate it . I would recommend it to any Pokemon Fan !

    • 052 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Our 9 year old says , Awesome Game ! Starting in one region then going to another one is a good idea . I think it's good for those people who don't have Pokemon Silver for a Gameboy to see what it's like . The hardest part is finding all the HMs . They are impossible to find ( maybe it's just me , passing everything up and ignoring it ) ! I still managed to get pretty far ! Hopefully I'll finish . The Pokewalker is a nice finishing touch . Whoever thought of carrying a Pokemon around with you is a genius !

    • 060 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Pokemon HeartGold / SoulSilver ( HG / SS ) are , as their name implies , remakes of the older Gold / Silver ( G / S ) games that came out for the original GameBoy . Personally , I didn't really like G / S that much . They were decent games , but I never really liked the variety of Pokemon the original games had , and so I was a bit cautious about purchasing the new games . All my worries were put to rest instantly . I had previously played and enjoyed the FireRed / LeafGreen ( FR / LG ) games , and these new games are similar in structure ( FR / LG being remakes of Red and Green - although Green was Blue in America ) . First off , the original game is completely updated and remixed . You'll see new features from the start thanks to the dual screen and touch input . You can do most everything with the buttons and d-pad , so touch control is mostly optional . Since you'll be logging easily 50 hours in this game , that's important . Pokemon variety seems to have been updated for the better in many spots , and the graphics are the same bright and simple graphics that make Pokemon games great ( with the addition of some neat 3d twists in spots ) . And the content is amazing . In each Pokemon game , you compete around the region for 8 gym badges and then fight the Final Four ( and their Champion ) for the title of greatest trainer in the land . But in FR / LG and now HG / SS , you repeat the process in a new area - Kanto ( from the original Red / Blue games ) . That means 16 gym badges , two sets of Final Four showdowns , and oodles of extra content throughout . The controls are as simple as always . There's a toggle for your Running Shoes now , which means you can run fast or walk slow for better control at the touch of a button / stylus , plus the bike is in too . The bottom screen basically has the in-game menu up at all times , and with touch input , this means you're basically one touch from any option at any time . If you don't have your stylus out , it's one button to switch between screens . It's simple , and brilliant . Overall , this is the best Pokemon game to date . It has the most features , the best graphics , the most gameplay - everything . If you're a Pokemon fan , this is absolutely the one to get ( especially SS over HG - I prefer Lugia ) . And don't forget the Pokewalker ! As if these games didn't have enough stuff already , they includes a little pedometer that raises the levels and happiness of your Pokemon while you play little minigames to catch additional Pokemon and items . That's a lot of content . Notes for the hardcore fans - the mascot legendary is Lugia , although you can also get Ho-Oh ( from HG ) later in the story , without trading . You also get to choose from three sets of starters at different points in the story , including the Kanto starters - and yes , that means you can get 3 different starter pokemon in one game . You also get to catch the Kanto Pokemon , so you can get virtually all of the National Dex in one game . Catching the full National Dex requires HG / SS and Platinum , plus some event-only Pokemon . HG / SS are fully compatible with Pokemon Platinum for trading , and you can also import your Pokemon from FR / LG through the Pal Park , although you need to play all the way through the first half of the game to open it up ( and FR / LG are not required to complete the NAtional Dex ) . Apricorn and berry collecting are in , poffins and underground mining are out .

Call me a nerd , but I love this Pokemon game the most . Only thing I don't enjoy is the fact that I can't seem to trade from the Pokemon Pearl / Diamond series into the Soul Silver game . . . Pretty awesome aside from that though .

    • 065 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I'm probably not the average DS player . I'm a 23 year old female who loved the red and blue pokemon games when I was a kid . I got a DSi recently to play Mario and Brain Age , but when a couple friends started talking about playing pokemon again I got nostalgic and ordered Soul Silver . And I'm addicted all over again : ) The game play is great . It's tons of fun seeing the full-color version of the Johto region and traveling with my favorite pokemon on screen . There's a good mix of pokemon I remember from the original games and new ones that are also fun to train . And the pokewalker is a great add-on . Not to mention wireless play with friends who live all over my region . Pokemon has proved itself to be every bit as much of a classic game as Mario .

    • 068 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) This game is really just the Generation II games just augmented in various forms . In my opinion , generation II was the best game in terms of storyline , variety of pokemon , and overall gameplay . Now , it has just been enhanced with the better graphics from later generations , more moves , and better sidequests . New things like the Battle Frontier , the new Fighting Dojo , and the return of Cerulean Cave are a few examples of what makes this a better version of the previous best . Aside from the game itself , SoulSilver and HeartGold also come with a new Pokewalker . Essentially a throwback to the fond memories I had of Tomagotchies only way cooler because its pokemon . Plus , you can catch wild pokemon and find items and import them back into the game itself . Yes , I am a college student , but I still wear my Pokewalker to class and all over campus . Overall , the combination of the two ( the game and the pokewalker ) is a great way to put on those nostalgia goggles ( see definition here - > [ . . . ] ) and play one of the best pokemon games to date .

    • 071 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Pokemon Silver was my all-time favorite in the series ; so when I heard they were remaking the game I knew I absolutely had to have it . I had high expectations , and it didn't disappoint in the least bit . I'm not one to appreciate changes in an old favorite , but all the new changes the developers added to this game are more than welcome . Allowing your favorite Pokemon follow you around outside of it's Pokeball is a great feature ; making Pokemon more than just Pokemon . It seems it's gradually growing to be more like a virtual pet game with each release . But it still maintains it's roots as one of the best RPGs I've ever played . If you played Pokemon Silver , this remake is a must-have . It will revitalize everything you've felt about Pokemon , and more .

It has taken the best of all of the games and made a quality product . My favorite part is having your pokemon tag along behind you . I always liked that about the yellow version .

    • 079 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Pokemon has been around for years and it just never seems to get old . This game is a lot of fun for all ages . It's simple but not so simple that it gets dull after a while . You catch Pokemon and let them battle other critters . The more you do that the faster they level up , evolve , and learn now attacks . The goal is to catch more and more Pokemon to fill your Pokedex and there are plenty of other things to do as well so you just keep going and going until you reach the big fight at the end . I love the idea of the Pokemon to go in it's little device as well .

    • 085 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Back in the late 90 ' s , there wasn't a single place in the US or Japan where you couldn't find something or someone related to Pokemon . The franchise was huge , penetrated popular culture and selling to millions of kiddos around the world things like plush dolls , card games , clothing , accessories , TV shows , spin-offs , and of course the actual games . After a few years , Pokemon mania died off a bit , but 15 years later and the series is still popular , still interesting , and still great . Pokemon SoulSilver is no exception . Based on the sequels to the original Pokemon ( PKMN ) games , HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of past , similarly named , games , Gold and Silver . The DS games retain all of the originals features , such as real time events , certain PKMN , and characters and regions . The region in these games , Johto , hasn't been seen in about 10 years , and pleasant nostalgia comes along with it . New comers to the games wont find memories , but they will discover a very well polished and designed PKMN adventure . The core game is similar to previous PKMN games , only this time players find themselves in Jotho AND Kanto . Both lands get design , graphical , and contextual upgrades from the original games ( or the GBA remakes ) . Cities now have water fountains or brick roads or more flowers , etc . While these are hardly important in the grand scheme or things , it does provide a more pleasant viewing experience . HeartGold and SoulSilver have many of the same multiplayer features as Platinum , but still retains basic compatibility with all of the DS PKMN games . If a friend has Diamond version , you can still communicate , trade , and battle said friend if your game is HG / SS . More advanced features such as WiFi Plaza and variations to existing minigames and options are locked to HG / SS and Platinum . A select few are only playable if both parties have HG / SS . The games come with a neat booklet including a list of compatible games and how they are compatible . The adventure itself is just as well crafted as were the originals , Gold and Silver . The Johto region earned a graphical face lift , new PKMN are integrated into the older infrastructure , and new features make the adventure feel new and fresh , yet still keep the original's soul ( no pun intended ) . Instead of the traditional 8 Gym Leaders , HG / SS spans 16 Gyms , in two different regions , providing potentially hundereds of hours of enjoyment . Unfortunately , as veterans of the orginals Gold / Silver may remeber , the Kanto region is no where near as interesting as Johto . I dont mean this from a design prospective , but in terms of content . Yes , both regions contain 8 Gyms each , but Johto has many more side quests and plot points than does Kanto . One example of this would be the fact that Team Rocket and their activities are almost exclusive to Johto . This results in the playthrough of Kanto being much faster than that of Johto . For better or for worse , the battle system and overall design is identical to the previous DS games . 2D sprites battle each other on a 2D plane , certain attack moves use 3D effects , more geometry is employed on the over world than the actual battle screen , and PKMN still screech with outdated 8 - bit sounds . Your still fighting through Gyms to reach the Elite Four , and you still trying to catch ' em all . The overall PKMN system is just as polished as its ever been , but the similarity to previous games may ward off older players . Those looking for the next evolution of PKMN games will be sorely disappointed . Those willing to overlook the repeated design , or new comers to the series will find much enjoyment out of the game . Being a PKMN game , its accessible and entertaining to all ages , kiddos will be glued to their DS system for hours , yet older folks will find the surprising depth and customization enjoyable . Despite being very similar to past games , the classic PKMN formula proves itself yet again , and provides a very lengthy and great adventure . The lack of any substantial change and outdated design keeps HeartGold and SoulSilver from reaching must-have status , but fans of the franchise will find much to like .

    • 088 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) This game is much like the others in the Pokemon series , only with a twist . You will have an additional way to level your Pokemon . Tired of running back and forth through the grass barely gaining 20xp per kill ? Well no more ! This game includes a Pokewalker accessory that allows you to take a Pokemon with you while out of the house . When you transfer your Pokemon to the Pokewalker , it will not only gain a level as you walk / jog / run , but it can find items , and battle other Pokemon as well . The game overall is pretty fantastic , with the ability to walk with your Pokemon , and more badges to earn and an additional region . There is one glitch in the game , as it sometimes disrupts your saved game , and completely wipes it clean , making you have to start over from scratch . This problem has been reported by many users of the game , as well as the person whom I gave the game to .

    • 094 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I played the original versions the day they came out and loved them . I was ok with 251 pokemon but over the years they introduced new pokemon and I lost interest in pokemon games so i just stuck with my old games ( which reset after 100hrs play ) . I have a little sister who is into the 400 + pokemon now and she plays Platinum version which i tried but nothing beats the original . I bought this game because its the story I grew up with and I like very much . The graphics are awesome and the interface is great , im finally using the stylus . I like this game because I can play with the pokemon im familiar with and battle with the other versions , such as Platinum , Diamond , and Pearl I would have written a more in depth review but I have some pokemon that need training : )

    • 096 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I played pokemon crystal when I was younger and I loved it ! The storyline is very similiar to the original with a few changes . They have improved the game play . The pros are they have got rid of the pokewatch and put the start menu so its much faster to access it . They have let you register 2 items for the y function . The pokewalker is a nice feature , now I can raise my pokemon while I'm at school . They have replaced the contest with pokethalon which I think is way better because in the contest most of it was luck . Pokemon's graphics have improved. They added a running button on the touchscren so you can just touch it and you don't have to hold the b button . You can also go to Kanto region . The cons were that they replaced berries with apricots . All they can do is make balls but it takes a day to get them . The usual way to get berries without trade is that your mother holds some of the money and shops with some of it to buy the berries . this is my opinion but they didn't make the map a key feature and put it in a key feature . I used to put the map as my y setting . Now its annoying to open up my map i have to touch through all these buttons . What I'd like to see in the next game : make use of the useless start and select buttons as extra y buttons . bring back berries keep the phone feature

    • 098 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I don't have the game yet ( is should come within the week ) but from what i've read and watched I close to passing out it seems so much fun . I only have the DS pokemon games , saphire , and fire red . so I haven't played the original but from what I hear it has some incredable new functions . a good feature that i read about is the touch screen has a big role in the game and the X , B and Y button nolonger need to be used because you can now use the touchscreen to run , open the bag options exc . , you can regester 2 items and just tap their icon to use them , and you can just thap the run button to run and tap the same button to go back to walk mode rather than holding B ! This feature is great if you don't want to make your buttons go flat . overall this is probibly the best pokemon game yet . Can't wait till the nexy game !

    • 105 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Everyone agrees that Pokemon Gold , Silver and Crystal were some of , if not the , best games in the series . But i want you to know that these games are even better . Having played every title in the series i can say that Heartgold and Soulsilver are my favorite entries yet . All of the great things from the original versions such as the Bug catching contest , 16 gym leaders , fighting red and even the experience of seeing how kanto had changed in 3 years time are preserved . Add to that the features implemented since then ; such as abilities , weather , over 250 more pokemon and of course 3D . The 3D Graphics in game feel perfect , seeing the waterfall lugia bursts out of in perspective and the amazing level design to add to the new view make this game a sight to behold . Really the only gripe i have is the new game cornewr featuring a voltorb card flip game instead of the classic slots . But , my friends tell me the game is very addictive and quite fun so i guess its really more of a personal issue . All in all , i love these games . If you even like pokemon you should buy one of these to relive that classic feeling from your youth .

    • 108 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) The graphics are amazing as well as the online experience . The fact that it involves two regions instead of one is phenomenal . It could use more legendaries to make the game more interesting . also something like the underground from diamond and pearl might be nice ! !
    • 110 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) I bought this for my son . He says . . . This is a review for Soul Silver . First of all the game has a feature that Pokemon can come out of the pokeball . This new game has the return of Team Rocket . There is the gyms and Elite Four from the Joto region . There is also the Kanto gyms as well . There are also Wifi events as well . The Pokewalker is awesome if you get it bundled with the software . You can catch Pokemon . You can also find items . Pros : o Pokemon come out of the pokeball in the game o New touch screen features o Best of all it is brand new to me I give it five stars . And the Pokewalker adds five stars . In all please get it . If you are not used to Pokemon it will be fun . There are no cons . : - )

It was for my grandson who is 7 yrs old . took about 1 week to figure out how to get the game going , my grandson is very adept at these games he was persistant and finally conquered it . I would not recommend this game as It is a bit pricey and once he learned how to play he lost interest . THere are a lot better less costly games out to play .

    • 117 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Pokemon HG and SS were highly anticipated . Everyone claims that Gold and Silver were the best Pokemon games . I disagreed . I always thought the 2nd generation was weak and simple . So when HG / SS was announced , I got kind of excited for some new challenges that the originals didn't offer . I was disappointed . It's a straight remake of Gold and Silver . With better graphics . The graphics and music are nice , sure . But it's not about that . It's about the content . I was hoping for more from The Pokemon Company . But whatever , I'll take what I got . This game could have been better . The play time was fairly short and easy . I completed the game in a week ( and that is SLOW , as others completed it much faster ) and don't feel the urge to play through it again . I'm sure others will disagree with this review . Mostly people who are obsessive and get all defensive about their favorite Pokemon generation . So don't waste your time ranting about how I don't know a good game , because I definitely do . And this surely isn't one of them . Dear Game Freak , quit doing these remakes . They're awful and boring . We understand you like / need money , but so do we . So quit making us waste ours on this remade-crap you produce . Thanks .

    • 119 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Welcome to Pokemon Crystal , version 1.01 . That's essentially what Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are : lazy , unimaginative rehashes hastily cranked out by GAME FREAK for an easy cash-in . There is virtually ZERO new content in this game that is not present in one form or another in Pokemon Crystal or Pokemon Platinum . There are no new Pokemon species , battle moves or abilities . In other words , every Pokemon in HG / SS can be readily obtained from already-released GBA and DS Pokemon games . Even the Battle Frontier is a direct copy and paste from Pokemon Platinum with zero changes . Unlike FireRed and LeafGreen , there isn't even a new , sizable post-game region like the Sevii Islands . Instead , new additions are inserted here and there : Battle Frontier to Olivine City , Safari Zone to Cianwood , Pal Park ( same one as D / P / Pt's - - surprised ? ) to Fuchsia City . There's a new route linking Cianwood City to Safari Zone , but that's about it . I guess GAME FREAK decided that stripped-down Kanto was enough and chose not to spend any more effort designing new areas , knowing that their rehashes would sell like hotcakes regardless . After 11 years , almost none of the problems from the original Gold / Silver have been corrected in this incremental upgrade . The Rocket Execs , Elite Four members and gym leaders remain far too underleveled , including their rematches by the time you finally have access to them . The PokeGear is still annoying , and about once every five minutes , you'll get telephone calls from some bug catcher telling you about how awesome it is to watch his Pokemon become stronger . Kanto is still heavily watered-down , with landmarks such as Silph Co . , Pokemon Tower and Cinnabar Island being partially closed off or gutted - - and this time , the lack of cartridge space is no longer an excuse . Only two groups will possibly find these ports of any value : ( 1 ) folks who have never played Gold / Silver / Crystal before and ( 2 ) those who have insatiable amounts of rose-tinted nostalgia for the originals . For veterans of the Pokemon games , HG / SS offers nothing new or remotely interesting to the franchise , even for so-called enhanced remakes . Just grab a battery-repaired copy of Pokemon Crystal for ( . . . ) from eBay and save yourself some cash . Sadly , all GAME FREAK does these days is repeatedly employ its rehash-and-cash business strategy . Two mainline games , followed by a Director's Cut version and ports of the games from two generations ago . Then when it's all over , GAME FREAK will design a hundred or so new monsters and start the cycle all over again . If you're a smart consumer , don't fall for it .

    • 122 4  This review is from : Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) Once upon a time there were 2 games called Pokemon Gold and Silver . They were fun games and every kid bought them , so Nintendo had a great idea to make a game called Pokemon Crystal which was the same games with some extras . Now Nintendo got greedy and made a 4th and 5th version of the SAME GAME ! ! ! ! So if you bought every version of this game when they were new you would have spent over 175 dollars on different versions of the same game .

  • Pokemon SoulSilver Version ( Video Game ) This is not a simple remake . The graphics have all been updated , the colors have been made vibrant like new generations of pokemon , and a lot of new games and features have been added . Soulsilver / Heartgold also have the crystal storyline , which the original silver / gold did not have , so it adds an extra element to the game . Silver / Gold were arguably the best additions to the original pokemon , and in my opinion pokemon fans will not be disappointed with this remake . The trading system is a little strange as you cannot trade from certain games like firered / leafgreen / emerald , etc , so you may want to look into which games you can't trade with before setting your sights on certain pokemon . You can pop in a firered , etc into your DS and migrate pokemon into SoulSilver / HeartGold , but migrating doesn't count as a trade , so a haunter , for example , will not evolve by migrating it to SoulSilver . Other than that this game is great !

    • 016 4  Being an old Fan of Pokemon , I was so excited to see the updated version of the Silver game .
    • 029 4  This game was recommended by our babysitter to my daughter . She loves it and it can keep her entertained for hours if we let her .
    • 034 4  I grew up playing the original Silver Version on Game Boy Color for hours and hours on end and it gave me a thrill that no other game gave me at that time . : )
    • 045 4  Granddaughter loved both of these and found Silver to be an even greater challenge than the Gold .
    • 059 4  I ordered this game for my friend's birthday . She started playing it and really liked the graphics . The way your pokemon follows you around is really cute ! The pokewalker also has games on it and is great for taking out for wherever you want to go . You can even catch pokemon using your pokewalker . This game is definitely worth getting .
    • 064 4  I love the updated graphics a lot , and the new features make it even better . Call me a nerd , but I love this Pokemon game the most . Only thing I don't enjoy is the fact that I can't seem to trade from the Pokemon Pearl / Diamond series into the Soul Silver game . . . Pretty awesome aside from that though .
    • 081 4  Pokemon has been around for years and it just never seems to get old .
    • 093 4  This is a great game , the graphics and presentation are great . I really enjoyed it . I would recommend this game . Also I love the pokewalker , it's so cool to carry your pokemon with you . Once again the DS beats the PSP .
