Pokemon - Red Version

  • 022 4  I really liked this game because you get to realizing how a lot of the times you have to pay attention to the more subtle details . It is also really fun to raise your pokemon and get a bond with them ( In this game I started out with a Charmander and I have become so attached to it I coudn't let it go if someone offered me a Mew for it ! You also learn to respect your dream team . The only problem is that the cheat codes make it to easy to raise your pokemon incredibly high . There are some VERY , VERY , VERY tough mazes to navigate through . It's really fun when you start out . You must find your way without HMs . It's a very complicated , but awsome and sometimes even touching game .
    • 096 4  This was my first EVER gameboy game . I turned it on on one day and couldn't put it down for hours and hours . Some people think that it is childish and dumb , but I can assure you that it is a great game that is fun to play . I don't have e-mail , which is why I am using the kid review form , but I am really 17 . I can reccomend this game to anyone . Even my 81 - year-old grandmother loved it . If you don't think that you can play games like this , you are wrong . This is one of the best games that I have ever played . I have tried the gold version and the Ruby and all of those other games , but I always go back to the original . The first 150 pokemon are the absolute best .
    • 152 4  everyone loves this game , i mean come on . but one of my biggest problems is the fact that you can't catch all the pokemon by yourself , you have to trade with others . to me , this seems unneccesary and annoying and it only makes it so i will never catch all the pokemon .
    • 222 4  This game is so much fun ! Once you get started , you just can't stop ! It has to be the best video game ever ! Do yourself a favor and get it ! You'll like it , I promise you that !

  • 042 4  In October 1998 , my grandmother bought me a little known game called Pokemon . My Japanese friend told me of it , and it was one of the few RPGs for Game Boy that I didn't have and beat . Soon , I was addicted . Fight , catch , fight , catch , and fight and catch some more . So simple ! But therein lies the game's appeal . I put 60 + hours into this little thing ! I have now caught all 150 Pokemon , and my tops are Raichu , Charizard , Dugtrio , Nidoking , Fearow , and Raticate . Soon after this occurred , the TV show started , and the franchise was being milked like a cow on hormones . The game I thought was so cool was now being dished upon because of marketing to younger audiences . Older gamers , give this game a chance , and you may be surprised !
    • 024 4  Pokemon Red , along with the other Pokemon games , are the most addicting games I have ever played . My little sister rented it , but I ended up playing it forever . I played it for nearly six hours one day because I just couldn't put it down . It was so much fun to raise the pokemon and to make them evolve to their fullest extent . This game is a definite must own !
    • 028 4  I gave my kids this game along with the blue version for Christmas in 1999 and they always pick the Pokemon games over all the rest when we take a long car ride . My two girls ages 8 and 10 have never played so well together in the backseat of the car . I don't know everything about the game but my kids are comparing pokemon they catch , telling each other what level their Pokemon grew to , and trading Pokemon they catch . They're constantly interacting with each other . I wouldn't want them playing it all the time because reading is much more important , but it sure is nice on a long car ride . A must for parents who enjoy peace in the car .
    • 059 4  Awright . Pokemon Red RULES ! I am not able to put it down . I started with Charmander ( aka flamey ) And he is now level 100 ( and no , and didn't use any stupid trick or code ! ) All my other Pokemon are the same level , no cheat codes . My team : Charizard , Pidgeot , Raichu , Clefable , Vaporeon , Rhydon . If you're going to buy red , buy it soon , and start with Charmander !
    • 208 4  My son wanted the Red Version soooo bad , so he used some of his allowance to get it . He likes it but he'd much rather play the Gold Version that he's had for much longer .
    • 253 4  My brother bought me this game for my birthday , the first day I enjoyed it , but after a while its boring . all you do is battle other pokemon . I would recomend another game . Susie

  • 050 4  I bought my Po。
èmon Red version 2 years ago when they first came out , ( before all the Po。

-hype ) , I fell in love with the cute ( and some of the not so cute ) characters of Po。
èmon as soon as I started to play . It really is a great game , it does teach kids little lessons , and they must have the abillity to read to play , so it's not just some un-educational fighting game like you may think . It uses some rather large words in fact . They do fight in the game , and they do battle it out to the end , but not to the point of bloody-ness and death . But over all , it is one of the better video games out there , with lesson teaching , a must of reading skills , and EXTREMILY little violence . Po。
èmon Blue , Yellow , Gold , and Silver all have the same good quallities .
    • 185 4  I have had this game for about 2 months and i still can't put it down ! ! ! it is the best game i have ever bought . i love it and it would be fun for kids of all ages ! ! ! ! ! !

  • 086 4  Being a sixteen year old boy , I thought that it would be hardfor me to enjoy this game . How wrong I was ! This has got to be thebest game ever released on any system , and itdoes the game boy proud . Walking around , you fight around 150 pokemon and hopefully catch them all ! Hey , who else but Nintendo could come up with such brilliant names like Nidoking , Kingler , Guldeen and more . I don't want to tell you what to do , but I suggest that you go out now and buy this as soon as possible , because if you don't own it you're missing a treat . Now , some immortal words SQUIRTLE SQUIRTLE SQUIRTLE PIKACHU !
    • 148 4  Besides this again being a re-purchased item and a older game ; it was fun to play again despite horrible older graphics .
    • 167 4  you go into the world and catch pokemon ! there is no othergame created that is better . This is a must have item ! ! !

  • 103 4  I didn't buy it but I knew it would be good so I borrowed it from a friend . I only played for like 2 hours but I did so much . In that amount of time I had gotten half way through Mt . Moon and beat every trainer I fought . I caught 6 Pokemon and that's pretty good for a beginner . I chose Squirtle in the beginning even though I knew Bulbasaur was best for the Gym Leaders . Squirtle is also really good against Brock . I beat all his Pokemon in 3 moves . Squirtle is good because he doesn't have a weakness to any of the other guys you could have picked so you wouldn't have a weakness to Gary . Well that's all I have to say on the subject .
    • 004 4  The game is awesome. You get Charmander , Bulbasaur , Squirtle or sometimes Pikachu from Proffeser Oak , one of those you may choose as a first Pokemon. Now you can catch and train others. In this version and the blue version , you can link two game boys together for head-to-head competition. Not in the yellow version though !
    • 018 4  Pokemon starts off pretty fun but later it really annoys you . You have to pick between 3 Pokemon Bulbasuar , Charmander and Squirtle at the start . If you pick Charmander Gary picks the better one . Some pokemon you can't get in your version . I have 147 Pokemon . I have mew somehow because i surfed to get missingno who wreaks your game and found him . I think its a great game overall . P.S . Its very very additive .
    • 032 4  This red hot version of the Pokemon Game Boy game is sure to be a top-seller . If youre looking for a game where you can battle tough and have fun at the same time , then this is the game for you . The storyline goes something like this . . . . . . . You are a trainer from Pallet Town . In the beggining , you are given a choice of three basic pokemon . Bulbasaur , Charmander and Squirtle . All have their weaknesses and resistances . Charmander is good because he will beat grass type pokemon easiest but , Bulbasaur will be bad against these pokemon . However - Bulbasaur will be your best bet if you want to beat the rock type pokemon of Brocks . All round - Squirtle is your best bet.On your journey , youll catch new pokemon , fight new trainers and face up against real tough gym leaders ! As the game progresses , your pokemon will evolve : eg - Sqirtle into Wartortle . However you can cancel this at any time by pushing the B button . Search around in grassy areas - you could find a common Pidgey - but you might find a really rare pokemon. There are many different areas and cities . In each city - youll battle a gym leader and if you win , youll win a badge . Once youve travelled all around the pokemon world and collected all 8 badges , you will go to Indigo Plateau and Enter the Pokemon league . If you win - your job is done and to be a pokemon master is your destiny . HAVE FUN . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
    • 039 4  This game is a awesome game . You play Ash Ketchum , a young PKMN trainer who always trys to beat his opponent . This is fun till you catch all 150 PKMN . Also , if you dont have either , get blue instead .
    • 229 4  You can catch pokemon and train them for battles

  • 128 4  I bought this game primarily to find out what all the hype was about . I must admit its a pretty good game . But when it comes down to it its really nothing more than an RPG game aimed at smaller children . Instead of having your party of 4 or 5 adventurers going off to save the world you play Ash a Pokemon Trainer who uses up to 6 different Pokemon at any one point in order to save the world . In this way its just like any RPG I've ever played . The only problem I have with it as an RPG is that it seems awfully one dimensional . Maybe I haven't gotten far enough but as of right now it forces me to go each way . Maybe that makes it easier for children though since they aren't presented with as many choices . However I still found it quite addictive . I think the collecting part of it makes it interesting even though I know I will never collect all of the Pokemon . What I really want to do right now is just beat it once through , and so I've given up on collecting for now . Overall this is an excellent game and definitely worth some of the hype if for no other reason than its the first RPG successfully targeted at younger children .
    • 056 4  I used to put Pokemon in the same catagory as other virtual pets . Ten I played it for the first time and haven't put it down since . The game is addictive . No matter what your age , it's thrilling when you catch your first pokemon . I found myself beaming all day when I got some of the tougher ones . Whether you're ten or thirty this game is great .
    • 076 4  Pokemon Red kept me busy . I'm the kind of person who likes to figure out things things so I think this is a great game . You get to figure out where you leave a town , what happened to pokemon or people and where the one very rare pokemon is . You get to go over water , fly to previous cities , use a bike or just plain walk . When your pokemon change , it's so exiting because you never know what they'll be able to do next . This game deserves 5 stars !
    • 249 4  Our world is full of people who are thouroghly convinced that by chucking little plastic balls at mutated animals you can gain a new friend . Have mercy on my innocent soul . Save your money , you could use it if you've blown it all on the other products . No one's really going to care in ten years if become a pokemon master or not . Save your money and your time . Not that you're actually regarding this review . Sigh .

  • 130 4  One of the better roleplaying games for Game Boy . Great for long car rides or plane rides .
    • 189 4  Hours of fun for you and the kids , and can be used on the Gameboy Advance
    • 230 4  if you want this game and you get it you will it

  • 132 4  Pokemon red is a really awesome game . The variety of monsters you can have is wonderful , and the game reaaaly teaches you how to ration , and plan . For instance , you have to time your moves exactly when you are in the Safari Zone . I think it's great that your Pokemon don't die ; it teaches children not everything dies , and you always have a chance to try again , with a minimal loss . There's reading involved too , which is always a plus , and it brings kids together when trading time comes ! All in all , a great , verrry fun game ! Charizard Rules !
    • 224 4  This game is cool because other games have vilence on it but pokemon red , blue and yellow do not have it so if you wan't to buy a game buy pokemon red , blue and yellow because this game is very fun to own .
    • 236 4  when i first got this game , i was addicted to it . but that was about a year ago . after playing with it for about a year i started to realize what a bad game it was . it is slow , and there is no excitement .
    • 239 4  I got this gme for Christmas , and after awhile , I couldn't put it down ! After about 56 hours , I had beaten Mewtwo . I am trying to get a cheap Gameshark so I can train and catch ' em all !

  • 134 4  Pokemon Red is a very enjoyable game . When I got it for my son , I found him spending a lot of time on his Game-Boy . I decided to try it myself . You take on the role of Ash , a ten year old boy who dreams of being a Pokemon master . Pokemon are creatures with many special powers . Some types are common , like Pidgey and Rattata . Others are very rare like Moltres and Zapdos . And yes , Pikachu is one of stronger Pokemon in the game . To become a Pokemon master you must defeat 8 gym-leaders . When you defeat a gym-leader , you earn a badge . Once you earn 8 badges you enter the Pokemon League where , if , you defeat the Elite Four you become a Pokemon Master . I would recomend this game to any parent buying it for their child .
    • 069 4  This game is a classic , and really good considering it was released in 1995 . I think this game revolutinized RPGs for Gameboy , but it's not very interisting after the first time you beat it . You start as Ash in a race to defeat your rival and become the greatest Pokemon master of all time . All in all , I think this game is great , espically for kids still in grade-school .
    • 162 4  This game is a classic , and really good considering it was released in 1995 . • 171 4  I think that Pokemon Red is really fun . Raising the pokemon can sometimes be really tough , but in the end they eventually get stronger . I recommend this game for other people who don't have Pokemon Red and is thinking of buying it . Pokemon Blue is terrific , too !
    • 186 4  This game really has a whole lot of Pokemon , but the Crystal version I have has more Pokemon . Compared to the Red , Blue and Yellow Versions to the Gold , Silver , and Crystal Versions , Red , Blue and Yellow versions , it has 150 pokemon while the Gold , Silver , and Crystal version has 250 pokemon . The Ruby and Sapphire Versions have 200 pokemon . So the Gold , Silver , and Crystal has more than Red , Blue , Yellow , Ruby , and Sapphire , even though Ruby and Sapphire replaced old pokemon and removed them for new pokemon .
    • 196 4  I believe that Pokemon Red is an extremely interesting stragedy game that requires alot of thought to play as well as a fertile imagination . Complex stragedies are the key to gain all eight badges and beating the powerful Elite Four .
    • 234 4  PokeMon Red is an okay game and it is fun the first couple times you play it . After that it becomes boring and repetitive . I recommend borrowing it from a friend .

  • 136 4  People are insulting this game for no reason except for its childish hype , and believe me this game is not as childish as expected . To beat the game takes more work then necessary . Not to spoil anything but you must fight as many people as posible to be able to last . The game itself is very good for GB standards . It may be repetitive but it offers alot of creativity , in allowing you to form your own team of 6 pokemon , with there own attacks . The added advantage of trading and fighting with friends is also a great way to become a Pokemon Master . This is a must buy and a game that will raise the standards .
    • 105 4  Pokemon red is the best of the two red blue but yellow is the best of all . In red you may only be able to catch 139 pokemon but there some stronger one that no other version can cath . just a tip : chouse balbasuar in the bigining of the game it will help the best
    • 119 4  Pokemon Red is a very fun game for all ages . It's real great for all ages because there is no violent scenes or anything like that . Once you start playing you won't want to stop until your battery runs out .

  • 138 4  On 02 / 14 / 1998 , I recieved a game that ultimately became an obsession for me . I played this game whereever and whenever possible . I have caught all 151 of the original characters and kept on playing anyway . The game , it seems , never ends . I have about 215 hours on my file , and not once did it get boring . The Pokemon Era may have died down , but Red is still a great game . As the 10th anniversary of its American release rolls around , I can see the revival of a classic on the horizon .
    • 044 4  This is a cool game . I like it because it has adventure and you can go to new cities and caves like Rock Tunnel . It takes a long time to get all 151 Pokemon . It takes about 15 days to beat the game , and it's fun .
    • 142 4  I purchased this game for my daughter who still had found her gameboy from 1999 . She really wanted the red version again , so I purchased it . She said it was as fun as she remembers ! The game itself was in excellent condition .
    • 164 4  About a year ago I bought this game at a Toys R Us . I began playing , and it was fun . I started with a Charmander . This game is challenging at times , and luckily I have strategy books . I beat the game three times , and I keep started all over again becuase it's so fun .
    • 206 4  Awesome classic . Nintendo made one great game here , I hope kids these days will still play the oldies .
    • 215 4  I like the game because the Pokemon characters are cute looking . I like to see the name I have chosen for the cartoon to appear on the small screen . It gives me a sense of power .

  • 177 4  Pokemon is the best the best Game Boy game ever ! When I heard about Pokemon I thougth it was going to be another cheap thing from Nintendo , but I started to see the animated cartoon Pokemon on UPN ( Now WB ) and I loved it I think it is one of best games ever.It was hard , you had to think , exiting and most it was fun capturing all the Pokemon , but some cases you had get the Pokemon from a different color version only has 11 different Pokemon. It took about three times to start all over because I had messtup buy fainting a pokemon that only comes out onece in the whole game.Another time I messtup by geeting a tought Pokemon to raise at the begining of the game ( Charmander ) . This is one Nintendos best next to Zelda and Mario .
    • 052 4  This game is wonderful. When I picked up this game it was my first time even playing a Game Boy and I didn't have any idea how to play . Once I got the hang of it I began getting badges . Now I ` m the pokemon champion ! I have Blastoise on level 99 , Kabutops on level 70 , and more . I recommend both games to everyone .
    • 121 4  I Think this gamboy game is definetly worth your money because of the interaction between two gamboys .
    • 169 4  pokemon is fun when you begin but soon it gets to easy and it's not that fun . But I have to admit pokemon is a good game .
    • 190 4  I love it . Its cool like Blue and Yellow .

  • 212 4  This game is really fun and I prefer it over blue version because it has better pokemon in it . The best part about red and blue version is all the cool gliches it has ! The gliches are really fun to play around with . Who said crashing your game wasn't fun ? Anyway , for 10 $ this is a really good game , and even though fire red and leaf green are out , who can really live without gliches and the graphics , in all of it's pixelated glory . This game will keep you occupied . You should totaly buy it . It is only a click away . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
    • 047 4  This game is cool . It is worth the money and it is fun because you train Pokemon and catch them . I think that you should buy this game . I gave it five stars because it is the best game .
    • 049 4  I love this game ! It is a fun game that lets you catch most of the poke'mon. You can even trade with your friends .
    • 173 4  I think this is a great game for everyone . You can play endlessly with your Pokemon and it's always a challenge . There is more to consider than just chosing which Pokemon to fight . They all have weaknesses so you have to have more than just one . It is also a challenge to train your Pokemon . And there's always fun in playing versus your friends with the cable hook up . I reccomend this to anyone at all . It's especially good to get it for long car rides or plane trips .
    • 194 4  At first I thought this game was like the little Virtual Pets but on Game Boy ! It was totally different ! It's an RPG about collecting and trainer Pokemon to become the best . I got started and couldn't quit ! This is the first version I got for Game Boy !

  • 245 4  Its not nearly as good as I thought it would be . It is an easy game with tons of tedious repitition . It was fun for the first hour , you spend most of your time in tedious battles . It has a crumby storyline , and isnt nearly as good as Zelda 64 . This game shouldnt be considered an RPG , because its the worst one I've played .
    • 175 4  I got the game when it first cam out and never stopped playing it.The thing i like about this game is collecting all 150 Pokemon , training them , and winning Gym Badges . If your looking for a RPG Game get Pokemon .

  • I AM JACK AND ENTERED UNDER MY FATHER'S NAME . IF YOU READ THIS MESSAGE PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU FIND THIS GAME TO BE APPEALING TO YOU . FIRST OFF , THE BASICS OF THE GAME ARE VERY SIMPLE . BASICALLY , YOU START OUT WITH ONE POKEMON - - CHARMANDER , SQUIRTLE , OR BULBASAUR . IT'S QUITE LIKE ANY OF THE OTHER POKEMON GAMES YOU。
VE PLAYED OR SEEN ON TV : FIRST , THE POINT IS TO CATCH ALL THE POKEMON THAT IS IN YOUR VERSION . FOR INSTANCE , BLUE VERSION HAS MEOWTH BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE MANKEY . YOU WILL BATTLE TRAINERS AND DEFEAT GYM LEADERS AND THE ELITE FOUR . ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS , YOU MUST FACE MEWTWO . YOU SHOULD TRY CAPTURING IT IN THE MASTERBALL OR ELSE IT WILL BE VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY DIFFICULT . SO THAT IS MY STORY , AND I STILL THINK ( AND I HOPE YOU DO TOO ) THAT THIS SHOULD BE BACK IN STORES . IF YOU THINK SO AND YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONTACT ME ABOUT IT , PLEASE EMAIL ME AT CHRISTOPHERSCHERER @ YAHOO.COM
    • 033 4  POKEMON RED IS A GAME THAT INVOLES ADVENTURE AND YOUR FRIENDS . YOU CAN USE YOUR FRIENDS FOR TRADING POKEMON THAT YOU HAVE TRAINED WELL.I RATE THIS GAME FIVE STARS , THIS GAME GETS YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS TOGHTER TO TRADE YOUR POKEMON.IN THE GAME YOU NEED TO TREAT YOUR POKEMON WITH LOVE AND CARE OR THEY WILL NOT OBEY YOU.THE LAST THING IS TO INJOY THE GAME , OH AND I THINK NINTENDO DID A GREAT JOB WITH POKEMON RED , BLUE , YELLOW , GOLD AND SILVER .
    • 179 4  This game is so cool cause this game allmost never ends [ except if you ALWAYS have a kid to trade with ] I mean I got mine in july [ 1999 ] and I havent even caught all 151 pokemon.THIS GAME RULES ! !
    • 183 4  WE JUST GOT THIS AWESOME GAME AND WE LOVE IT ! IT TEACHES YOU HOW TO BE RESPONSIBLE TO YOUR POKEMON AND LEADS YOU TO BE THE WORLD'S GREATEST POKEMON MASTER.IT HAS COOL THINGS IN IT THAT KEEP YOU OCCUPIED SO YOU CAN'T GET BORED.I URGE YOU TO BUY THIS AND HAVE FUN .

  • I'm 29 , and in general I hate Pokemon . I think it's one of the most over-commercialized things I've seen in my whole life . But my kid loves them , and as a result I checked this game out to see if I thought he'd like it as a gift . As it turns out , it's WAY above his level ( he's only 4 ) , but in the process of checking the game out I really decided this game was pretty cool . As has probably been said about 50 times already , the main aspect of the game is battling your pokemon against others , in an attempt to capture as many of them as possible . Although it doesn't sound like that big of a deal , what I found most interesting was this : In the game you can have up to six pokemon with you at any given time to use in battles , and there are something like 150 of them throughout the game that you can collect and use . There are several types of pokemon , all of which have certain strengths and weaknesses against other types . So as a result when you go into battle not only do you have to think about how advanced your current party is getting ( which is all there is to most RPG's I've seen on the gameboy ) , you also have to take into consideration which pokemon out of all those you've collected will do the best in that group of six that you can take with you on your quest . On the downside , unlike some of the RPG's on the gameboy that have been considered among the best such as Zelda and Final Fantasy , there doesn't seem to be a lot in the way of quests , side quests , or other things you need to do , other than just walk around an area fighting pokemon until they get strong enough to beat a gym trainer , which opens up the next area for you to wander around in fighting until you get strong enough to open up the next , and etc . This probably makes it a game that is good for younger players who might have trouble following all the different storyline aspects of some of the bigger RPGs , but still as a result it leaves me wanting a lot more story depth than there is . The game has a lot of interesting aspects , and it can be fun to find and train all the new varieties of pokemon as the game progresses , but I feel anyone who is a teenager or older would probably get more enjoyment out of one of the heftier RPG's .
    • 037 4  This is one of the best games i have payed in a very long time ! I also have a playstation and quite a few games but when i got pokemon red , i couldent ( and still cant ) put it down ! Thats the longest break my playstations ever had ! This game has unlimited replay value , because once you beat the game , you can keep playing , collecting pokemon , and raising there levels . If you have any intrest in pokemon at all , get this game and i promise you wont be dissapointed ! ! ! !
    • 067 4  This game is the original Red version NOT the super hyped up FireRed version for the gameboy advance . Basicly your a boy named Ash Ketchem ( you can give him any name you like ) trying to become the world's greatest pokemon master ! ! In the begining you and your rival ( Gary or anyname you want to give him ) get to pick a pokemon for your adventure . I recommned charmander because he's a big challange compared to picking Bulbasaur or Squirtal . Once you catch all 150 pokemon you get a diploma for compleating it . I would get this game if you can find it . It may be dated and disigned for the GameBoy Pocket black and white system insted of color plus the sound and grapics are only 8 bits but that makes the game more fun in my opinion . Poke'mon Red version IS and ALWAYS will be better than the new Fire verison .
    • 070 4  Pokemon Red was a great game . You are Ash trying to become the worlds greatest trainer . Traveling to many towns and cities you will fight gym leaders to collect badges . After collecting all 8 badges you can fight the elite 4 and become a pokemon master . I never was interested in any of the other pokemon things but i played the game once and i was hooked . Mike Breman also has a good review of PKMN silver . I any one knows his email email me at evets31 @ hotmail.com
    • 080 4  Me And my brother have been playing video games since pong ( About 20 years ago ) and this is the greatest we've ever played !
    • 098 4  Sometimes the first is the best ! It may have only had 150 pokemon ( excluding Mew ) , and that may not seem like enough now , it sure was back then ! Pretty different , even though it has the same obsticales as its proceeders have . If youre starting out with a Pokemon game , this one is definatly recomended .
    • 107 4  Pokemon Red is a great game . I wouldnt recemend giving it to some1 who dosnt read well though . You also have to get a little help from the Red and Yellow to beat the game . I dont think I need to explain about how the game goes in general . ( youve probobly read all the other reviews ) . Theres a cheat so you can get level 100 pokemon or infinity Master Balls but it totaly messes up ur game . All of my friends have Pokemon Red and I think that you or whoever you are thinking of buying this for will enjoy this as much as I did .
    • 109 4  I first thought pokemon was uncool untill i traded for this game . I played it first starting with charmander and got stuck and could do nothing and got bored and didn't play it for a year or so . When I picked it up again . I haven't put it down . I have beat the elite four and have 67 pokemon . I am still interested . I have taken this on many long trips . Its good for that but in the car it might make you car sick . I think this game is the only pokemon thing you need . The toys are pointless . The cards are just peices of paper , and the tv show and movie is dull . Get this game ( start with bulbasur )
    • 111 4  Pokemon ( red ) is the best game boy game ever and is on of the top games out of all the rest . If your thinking of buying it you better quick
    • 113 4  Pokemon Red is a great game . You get to catch and battle Pokemon . If you have a Nintendo 64 later you can battle with the ones you've caught already if you get Pokemon Stadium . I can't stop playing it ( unless my Gameboy runs out of batteries ) . Buy this game ! Gloom Rocks !
    • 124 4  First off let me say this : I'm 29 , and in general I hate Pokemon .
    • 219 4  This game may be old but it's a pretty good game . I don't know all the new pokemon ( or hardly any ) so this game is great for me . The animation is not to great but hey-it's a gameboy game ! It has very intresting music that gets annoying when you turn it on but i just turn it off . I say the music and the looks of people are the only bad things .
    • 226 4  I have to be honest and say that I am beginning to loathe the pokemon fad emensely . Nothing will make me happier than when that little yellow rat goes the way of pogs . However my hate of all things pokemon was not always so . I actually bought this game around a month before the huge pokemon phenomena really picked up , so at that time i was not sick of it ( I actually hadn't really heard that much about it ) . When i first played the game it was fun , the idea of inslaving little cute beasties , and then making them pit-fight was very appealing . I played pokemon a lot for the next few weeks and developed quite a neck strain in doing so . However as I began to get further into the plot and discovered that there was none . Basicly the plot revolves around going from town to town earning badges and getting items , and fighting the absurd antagonists known as team rocket . Also to cramp the game was the huge repetiveness . I really disliked that there were very few enemy trainer sprites and it seemed like you were always fighting the same type of stuff . So as soon as I got to the sixth badge my intrest just petered out and I stopped playing . By that time i ahd begun to turn sour to the whole pokemon thing anyway . I suppose that the reason this is so popular among newbie RPGers is that it requirers little skill , and falls back on repetiveness .
    • 247 4  This game was made to put insomniacs to sleep. The graphics are horrible , you can't catch ' em all unless you want to spend lots of $ $ getting the blue and yellow , as well as red . And now that they've come out with gold , silver , and crystal , you have at least a hundred more to catch . This game is too easy , even for a beginner like me , unless you count catching the rare pokemon . Basically , all you are doing the whole game is beating the brains out of nonexistant creatures for the purpose of training and battling them against other trainers . Then , once you have beaten those trainers , you must battle the elite four for the sole purpose of being #1 .
    • 250 4  Here is the number one sleeping pill in the world . If you have trouble sleeping play this game ( not that it should be considered a game , games are supposed to be fun ) . It was boring boring boring . The graphics were horrible the plot was stupid . You can't catch them all unless you waste money on buying blue , yellow , and red . They have now come out with gold , silver , and cyrstal so you can try to catch more creatures . The game was so easy that I was able to beat it even though I am a novice . The piont is to beat the tar out of stupid nonexistent monsters to train and battle them so you can become number one so other trainers can try and beat up your pokemon . I think this game is a waste and anyone who buys it is going to ultimatly come to the same conclusion as I have . Don't waste your money as the craze will die down soon .

  • Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) People seem to say that , after watching the TV series , they deem the games bad also . Give the games a chance ! If you really want to know , the TV series came way after the games did ( 1999 ) , and it never turned out right . This game is great for everybody to play , except , if you own a GBA , you should buy one of the GBA remakes ( which I own ) , Pokémon FireRed or LeafGreen . FireRed and LeafGreen contain everything Red and Blue had , with several extras . For example , FireRed and LeafGreen has GBA-quality sprites and graphics , as well as something called the Sevii Islands for when you finish the game . You get a GBA Wireless Adapter with FireRed or LeafGreen , so you can play or chat with other people who have a Wireless Adapter and FireRed or LeafGreen . You can also trade with people who have Ruby , Sapphire , or Emerald after you've beaten the game and received your National Pok。
Dex . So , bottom line , this game is excellent , but it's better and much improved on one of it's GBA counterparts ( which are remakes e.x . sames roads and same region ) , FireRed or LeafGreen .

    • 092 4  Man , this brings back memories ! Even though the remakes , Fire Red and Leaf Green are better graphically speaking , you still can't go past where it all began . The red-tinted monochrome screen , the brief flashes of green , the fact that it took me over an hour to find a Pikachu ! ! ! If your a fan , you should own this . If not , try it . Join us !
    • 232 4  This game is one of the funest Game Boy Color games ever ! 150 pokemon ? Wow ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! That's alot ! Who's cares about graphics in this game , it's still fun ! The gameplay and sound is reat as well . If you love this game but want better graphics or more stuff to do , then buy FireRed or LeafGreen Version ! They are just as fun ! I'd reccomend trying at least one of the versions : Red , Blue , Yellow , Silver , Gold , Cristel , FireRed , LeafGreen or Emerald . Don't get Ruby and Saphire tohugh , they stink .

  • Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) The year was 1998 . I was twelve years old , in middle school , and the Pokemon games debuted in the United States for the very first time . A game so simple and yet at the very same time : So complex . Nothing was more addictive , nothing was more fun than playing Pokemon . If you remember the craze ( the REAL craze , presently it isn't nearly as strong as it was back then ) , then you remember what it was like to go to school back in those days . Suddenly EVERYONE had a Gameboy . Suddenly even those who didn't normally play games or even know what the hell a Gameboy was , had it . And you'd go up to your friends and you'd trade Pokemon , you'd taunt each other about who was the better champion when you battled . You got in arguments over who the best starter was . Then you learned of those glitches to get all your Pokemon to level 100 by duplicating the Rare Candies . You caught Missingno and M-Block and caught Safari Zone Pokemon by exploiting what may very well be one of the most widely known glitches in video game history . And of course , you went to catch them all , and you probably had that ONE friend who you deemed your rival and you had to catch ' em all before he did . If you remember all this , you're a true Pokemon fan . This isn't a myth , this game debuted , sold gazillions of copies and started a craze that - - while it isn't as strong - - still exists today . This was one of the heights of gaming period . The Red and Blue versions may have seen stateside release in 1998 , but the game was actually made in 1995 . Before the television show came around . When the TV series took off in America , the games came next and as I said , they sold more copies than the latest installment of Harry Potter . I'm not kidding . Red and Blue began almost everything you currently see in the series today . The game begins with you naming your character ( you couldn't choose between a boy or a girl in this one ) and then your rival . Again , if you had Pokemon fever you probably named your main character Ash and your rival was named Gary ( even the strategy guides referred to them as such ) . It began with Professor Oak letting you have a Pokemon of your choice ( between 3 starters ) and then ultimately he'd send you on a journey with a Pokedex and have you document the Pokemon you'd find . Along the way , you'd have to deal with Team Rocket , the bad guys who are always causing trouble and stealing everyone's Pokemon , as well as gather eight badges so you could challenge the Elite Four and become a Pokemon League Champion . The entire formula began here , and just about everything mentioned above has been done in each and every main series Pokemon game hereafter . What was perhaps the strangest thing about Pokemon is that the game was surprisingly deep in terms of combat . It was your traditional turn-based combat . Simple , yet it was so complex . For one , the game has a Rock / Paper / Scissors method to it . Every Pokemon has a type , and every type has its own strengths and weaknesses . For example , Water is strong up against fire but it is weak vs . Grass . Grass is weak vs . fire etc . etc . No Pokemon is invincible . They all have a weakness to some type . Though in these versions the psychics definitely have an unfair advantage as the type they're weak against ( bug ) is almost non-existent and there are hardly any bug type attacks . In the battle menu you're given a list of commands . Fight , Item , PKMN , or Run . You can switch Pokemon you've caught in and out of battle on the fly , but it'll usually cost you a turn . It's the strategic portion of Pokemon that makes battling fun and addictive . As you go through the game you'll be challenged by trainers and you never know what they'll throw at you ! It's completely unpredictable and some of them are tough . It's also interesting because with 150 different Pokemon , the amount of teams you can make are endless , and it really makes you think about what types you want in your roster . Because most of the Pokemon types are weak vs . more than just one type . It's also important that you give them a variety of moves , as the moves are also typed . On paper it doesn't seem like much , but when you actually play the game , you'll find a clog in your drain you didn't even know you had because you thought your team was perfect . . . but then that one Pokemon comes along and exposes your fatal flaw . Pokemon was no short game . It was full of all sorts of side quests . From the Safari Zone , to catching the Legendary Birds , to the Unknown Dungeon . There was plenty to do , and even after the game was over there was STILL more to accomplish . Of course , your main accomplishment was getting them all . Pokemon could easily keep you busy for well over 60 hours . In 1998 this is an amazing feat seeing as how most RPGs of TODAY don't keep you busy that long . The main quest itself only took a measly 15 hours or so , but all the extra content kept you on your toes . Even more , Pokemon was one of the few Gameboy Games that made excellent use of the link cable . Since Red and Blue versions had different Pokemon , some only appeared in certain versions . You couldn't for example , catch a Magmar in the Red version , but you could in Blue . How then , were Red players supposed to catch all 150 ? By trading . Until Pokemon came around , my link cable was collecting dust . Trading was usually a slow grueling process , though . Traded Pokemon also got an experience boost so they were easier to train . Even more exciting than trading , however , was what really made Pokemon a blast to play : Battling . You and your friends could get together and battle one another ! Test out your Pokemon teams against your friends . They were , more often not , far better to battle against than the games trainers . It's always interesting to see who your opponents heavy hitter is . With your friends it was always interesting . Imagine how embarrassed you were to say a certain Pokemon sucked only to discover that the trainer actually did a good job training ? As far as the game looks and sounds , it didn't really look all that great when it was released in 1998 ( it was after all , a game made in 1995 ) . On the original gameboy it was pretty grainy ( but very clear on the Gameboy Pocket ) and of course it was black or white ( unless you played it on a Super Gameboy or Gameboy Color ) . For a Gameboy game , though , it actually wasn't too bad . It was annoying to watch a Pokemon simply flinch to attack , and some of the animations weren't all that great , but it was to be expected due to the Gameboy's limitations . The music , however , was fantastic . The tunes were catchy - - particularly the trainer battles and gym leader battles . The only really annoying thing was the sound effects . They weren't all that great , and its a shame that Nintendo actually continues to use those exact same sound effects in Pokemon games today . Still , for what it's worth , this was the game you wanted on the Gameboy . Pokemon is a classic . It'll always be a classic . No matter who you are , if you played Pokemon ten years ago , the craze was completely undeniable . If you got addicted like I did , chances are you're still playing today . Because in its core , the game was far deeper than you thought it was , and the series continues to use that same basic formula even today .

    • 014 4  One word : PLAYBACK . My sister first owned this game in 1998 , and since then I have owned MANY Pokémon games for both Game Boy Color and N64 . And let me tell you , the original is always the best ! Pokémon Red and Blue are the best games ever created for Game Boy Color ! I still love these games , trading Pokémon , and battling other people with the Link Cable ! First of all , people of any age can enjoy this game . It is cute and innocent enough to entertain children , but the strategy and the level of gameplay make it a worthwhile game for adults . Everyone will love this game . You start out as a trainer named Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town . Your mission is to become a Pokémon Master by catching 150 Pokémon ( 151 if you count Mew ) and becoming the champion of the Elite Four . To do this , you must train and catch Pokémon , raise them , and even trade them between Red and Blue versions using your Link Cable or the infrared port on your Game Boy Color . This is both fun and time-consuming , which is great when you are at home sick or bored on a stormy day . Pokémon are raised by winning battles and / or using Rare Candy . Raising Pokémon may sound tedious , but you will change your mind about that when you actually play for yourself . Pokémon is addictive from the moment you start your game all the way through . You will meet many new people on the way , become a hero , and win new items and abilities as you go along . As Ash , you travel through the world of Kanto , which is divided into a number of cities and towns . A map will be your guide as you make your way through the vast world of Pokémon . Explore caves , oceans , tall grass , and rocky paths on your way . Each town or city usually has its own Pokémon Gym , with a Gym Leader which is something like a Boss . Each time you beat a Gym Leader you receive a badge . You need eight badges to battle the Elite Four and the current Elite Four Champion . There are different diversions in each city and town , for example , Celadon City's department store and casino , and one of my personal favorites , Fuschia City's Safari Zone . Trainers can be found everywhere , good and bad , from Team Rocket invading the radio station , to the gyms , in the water , on the road , and pretty much anywhere you go . Random Pokémon appear and battle you if you are in a cave , tall grass , or in the water . The wild Pokémon you come across are the ones that you can catch if you have Pokéballs with you . Items such as the bike and repel can help prevent you from running into too many Pokémon if you are trying to get somewhere . If your Pokémon are tired or injured , you can stop at a Pokémon center and heal them for free ! You can also store Pokémon via a computer terminal located within every Pokémon Center . The music is so cute ! And there is a lot of different music , so it doesn't get repetitive . If you are lucky enough to own Pokémon Stadium , you can play Red or Blue on your TV screen using a Transfer Pak ! You can also use the Pokémon you raised on your Red or Blue game to battle in Pokémon Stadium . Overall , this is one of the best games I have ever played . It is still fun after years of gameplay , as you never fully run out of stuff to do . If you want to get into Pokémon , or if you're an old fan that never quite got around to getting the game , this is the game for you ! Pokémaniacs rule !
    • 029 4  the new games that nintendo comes out wiht has new and weird pokemon that is such a . . . . . Idea . if you like poke mon but but thinking this is the worst because its old . GET A LIFE ! older is often times better . And besides Red and blue are the ONLY I repeat ONLY games you you can get the best starter pokemon . heres a tip if you get one , DONT GET SQUIRTIL ! people often choose bulbasaur as thier first bcause of its awsome power in its evolved form Vensaur . Blastiose is cool but not the best , my recemendation is bulbasaur . but if you want a butterfree and try to take a short cut when you catch a metapod and evolve it , boy will you be sorry , it will only know harden , evolve it from caterpi , by then even in metapod stage it will know tackle and string shot.and heres a tip . . . DONT CAPTURE MISSINGNO . it is a virus and will [ mess ] with the game if you catch it , you can defeat it to get the lots of rare candys and master balls but dont catch it . . . . .
    • 045 4  If you like pokemon , then get this game ! ! Although it is an old game , it is very fun and exciting ! It is definately a worthy game to buy . Oh yeah-and there's even a glitch called GLITCH CITY and MASSINGO . Glitch City is a cool place to catch glitched pokemon , but you need to go to www.supercheats.com to get the cheat for it . And Massingo can evolve into any pokemon if you use the right items . It's a really confusing , but fun way to play with your game ! When you have to choose between the 3 starter pokemon ( bulbasaur , charmander , or squirtle ) , I always have a fight over Squirtle and Charmander . But I usually choose squirtle . We pulled off quite nicely in the pokemon league along with my fearow , nidoking , rapidash , dragonite , and Jolteon . If you are planning to get pokemon yellow . . . . umm . . . how should I put this . . . . DON'T ! ! ! ! ! ! It's a TOTAL RIP OFF ! You don't even get to choose a good starter pokemon ! Only a dim wit little rodent ! Also , don't buy gold , silver , or crystal , either ! They have cute starter pokemon , but they stink ! Pokemon Red or Blue is the way to go ! This game will provide days of entertainment for people of all ages ! So go to a game shop near you and buy this game new or used today ! ( Go to game crazy , game stop , or game zone , and the used game will way cheap . . . . Mwa ha ha ha . . . )
    • 099 4  Pokemon Stadium is the most addictive Game Boy game I've ever seen . You can catch Pokemon , care for them by taking them to the Pokemon Center , Explore the wild and catch pokemon , participate in Gym matches to get badges , and LOTS more ! Pros : - Compatible with the Nintendo 64 game , Pokemon Stadium ( Nintendo 64 TRANSFER PAK REQUIRED ( sold seperately ) ! ) - Explore the world of Pokemon - Participate in Battles to strenghten your Pokemon - VERY addictive - GREAT graphics ( for its time , of course ) Cons : - If you HATE Pokemon , I don't recommend this game to you - Doesn't contain ALL 151 Pokemon ( You need Pokemon Blue ( SOLD SEPERATELY ! ) + this game to get all 151 Pokemon ) Overall : If you like pokemon , want an addictive video game for your Game Boy , Game Boy Pocket , Game Boy Color , Game Boy Advance , and / or Game Boy Advance SP , or just looking for an adventure game GET THIS GAME TODAY !
    • 157 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This is a great classic game . You begin as a new Pokemon trainer , and soon select your first Pokemon . The choices are Charmander , a fire type ; squirtle , a water type ; or bulbasaur , a fire type . Interestingly , three Pokemon you choose from are like rock / paper / scissors , charmander beats bulbasaur , squirtle beats charmander , and bulbasaur beats squirtle . Soon , you rival chooses his Pokemon ( annoyingly , its always the one that has the type advantage , like if you choose squirtle he will choose charmander . You are then given the task of completing a complete guide of Pokemon by catching all of them . In order to beat the game , you only need the first 150 Pokemon , however , there is also a legendary number 151 Mew . You catch Pokemon by using one you already have to weaken it , then catching it with a Pokeball . Once you catch a Pokemon , you may use it to fight others , but you can only have up to 6 Pokemon at a time . Along the way , you will encounter other trainers you may battle . There are regular trainers , which you battle only for money , fun , and experience . However , there are also gym leaders , which are specialized trainers with stronger Pokemon than regular trainers in their area have . There are 8 in all , and once you beat them , you may then battle the elite four , who are much tougher than gym leaders and you have to fight all of them in succession . You also encounter your rival throughout the game . And he becomes Pokemon League Champion , however , once you defeat him , you become Pokemon League Champion . There are also troublemaking team rocket members that you can and sometimes have to battle as well . Their boss is also the leader of gym 8 . I have found the gym leaders and team rocket members are actually exceedingly easy if you know what you're doing , however , the elite 4 is very tough , especially since you have to face them all toghether . There are also legendary Pokemon , which are considered to be part of the 151 total , and they are very rewarding but challenging to catch . Also , one cool thing is there is a lot of moves ( although some are kind of stupid ) and certain Pokemon have strengths over others . For example , fire takes out grass easily . However , you can beat the game just by having stronger Pokemon , however , this is actually harder than using strategy . Because it takes a great length of time to level up , while a skilled player can quickly catch a Pokemon with a type advantage . And to the guy who said he beat this game in a hour . . . . if you think this game is easy , than you should quit playing videogames altoghether , because you obviously are such a great master of everything . Also , IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT THE GAME IN A HOUR ! AT MINIMUM , YOU HAVE TO PLAY IT FOR AT LEAST LIKE 20 HOURS FOR YOUR POKEMON TO BE HIGH ENOUGH LEVEL TOO ! Oh , wait , you must have used a gameshark . Wow , no wonder you are so good at videogames . But if anyone tells you they beat the game in a hour , they either cheated , found a big glitch , or both . Or else their exaggerating . But the only way the game could really beat that easy is if you had a strategy guide . Oh this game is so easy , I only had to read 50 books on it to beat it on the first try . GET REAL ! IF THIS ISN'T A CHALLENGE , NOTHING IS ! Overall , its a great game , but there are some annoying things . First off , to get all 151 , you must trade with freinds , as neither red nor blue has every Pokemon , but they do combined . Most Pokemon are in both versions , but some are exclusive to either red or blue . Also , as you level up your Pokemon , they evolve ( which is really more accurately described as metamorphises ) , and some only evolve by trading them with the same Pokemon with another player . Another thing is there is only one save slot . Finally , in the Japenese version , by getting the first 150 , you get number 151 , but in the US version you can only get them through Nintendo's promotions or by cheating . Hmm , giving Americans a raw deal , aye Nintendo ? You know we buy into your promotions instead of demanding that you make stuff available in the games . In Japan , gamers would be outraged , but you know you can take advantage of us Americans ? Okay , go ahead . But despite the fact that it isn't as good as the Japenese version or a perfect game , Pokemon Red is still one of my favorites .
    • 158 4  This is a great classic game . • Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game is really fun ! When you start off Proffesor Oak gives you the choice of three Pokemon . One of them is the fire-type Charamander which in the end evoles into the fire breathing , claw slashing Charizard . Next is the water-type Squirtle which evoles into the all powerful Blastoise . Last is the Grass / Poison type Bulbasaur which evoles into the razor leaf Venusaur . In addition to Proffesor Oak asks a small favor . . . to fill up an electronic encyclepida called a pokedex . Trade with friends to capture them all . I did and I have 151 types of pokemon . Also you have to beat a group called the ELITE FOUR and if you don't YOU HAVE TO START FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME . Hope you had as much fun as I did when I played this game .

    • 046 4  Pokemania is awesome but it all started with this , perhaps the first translation from the Japanese version . I think you should know this : missingno . doesn't mess up your game . Also the best pokemon is mewto and save all your stuff so that you can beat missingno and the sixth item is 99 AWESOME
    • 085 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Being a sixteen year old boy , I thought that it would be hardfor me to enjoy this game .

  • So complex .
    • 001 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Let's face it . If you are a Pokemon fan , you _ will _ buy this game , if you don't already have it , and it doesn't matter in the slightest what I or anyone else has to say about it . Personally , I'm not a Pokemon fan ; like most grownups , I find the TV series to be way too cloying and cutesy , and I have an overwhelming urge to flee the room whenever I'm serenaded by some child's cries of Pika ! Pika ! I expected a game filled with the little critters to be about as much fun as an all-night Barney movie marathon . But I have to tell you that I was very pleasantly surprised . Don't get me wrong : Pokemon Red and Blue are still cute games , but it's cuteness at a very bearable , adult-accessible level . And you'll find yourself playing a very enjoyable , approachable game , with a surprising depth of play . There's a lot of fun involved in capturing and developing your Poke-army , and a lot of strategy in deciding the best set of techniques to obtain and develop . You'll have a good time . And if you're not careful , you may even find yourself negotiating Pokemon trades with your next-door neighbor's kids .

    • 009 4  I'll have to admit , for the first , say , year and a half when this game was out , I so desperately tried to hate it . . . I didn't want to admit that I was into a little ' kiddie ' game . . . however , just this past year , so many of my peers have been playing the game ( and I go to Junior High too , I'm talking about 13 , 14 , 15 year olds playing this game ) . So , finally , I gave in , and for Christmas , I asked for a Game Boy Color and Pokemon Red . . . that was about all I got for Christmas due to the cost of those two expensive items , but it was definitely worth it . . . This game is so . . . detailed . . . it's just unbelievable . It has a very easy learning curve , so after about half-an-hour I was cruising along with no problems at all . Catching your first Pokemon gives you a triumphant feeling , and beating your first trainer makes you feel like you're on top of the world , and you'll most likely find yourself screaming at the game , Oh yeah , who's the man ! That's right , that's what I thought ! ! ! Well , at least , that's what I did . . . There are 150 Pokemon in this game ( actually , in the Japanese version , there are 151 ) , and it's a lot of fun trying to catch all of them . You can also keep track of all the Pokemon you've seen / caught with the Pokedex . Without this tool , the game would be much more frustrating . I could really go on and on and on about this game , but there's a maximum of 1000 words , and unfortunately I think I've almost reached that limit . All I can say is , even if you don't have a Game Boy , or you're not even a fan of RPG's ( I'm still not a big fan of them ) , you owe it to yourself to pick up this game and give it a try . It's some of the most fun you'll ever have in the gaming world .
    • 010 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) My kids and I all love the Pokemon Gameboys ( the three of us each have our own Gameboy ) . The red Pokemon game is very similar to the blue , with the Yellow having some slight differences . I like the way the Pokemon game challenges kids . I suggest also buying one of the books which shows the various routes and places . This allows kids to work at the tasks without getting frustrated . The idea is to start at Prof . Oak's house , get your first Pokemon from him , and then journey all around the land of Pokemon , collecting various wild pokemon ( which you catch by battling them until they faint ) , and doing battle with other trainers along the way . In the process , kids learn to manuever through mazes of increasing complexity ( which is why the manuals are a help ) , to gather and use items , and to develop strategies for fighting various types of Pokemon . My five year-old even started to read while using her Gameboy , from needing to know which items she had with her ( in her Item List ) ! All in all these are great games which can be played over and over ( although only one game at a time can be saved ) , and which will provide your kids with hundreds of hours of fun .

    • 012 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) In this game , you play a ten year old boy on a quest to become a master of those all too familiar Pokémon . Some people make it their goal to raise their pokemon to level 100 , some just want to beat the elite four and some make it there goal to collect all 151 . But it is important that not one Pokemon can do it all , they all have strangths and weeknesses angainst other types unlike other rpg's where if you have a level 50 fighter you're all set . I'd recomend this game to anyone who likes any kind of RPG .
    • 015 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game is simply addictive ! You start as Ash Ketchum from Pallet town , on the mission of collecting , training , and battling cute little critters called Pokemon ( with an accent , if you're a Pokemaniac like me ) . The things I liked most about this game is that it is so absorbing . You have the chance to live in your own little world , and become a hero . This game is very interactive and you can train Pokemon or battle Pokemon with a friend via the Game Link Cable . I would not reccomend this game to children under 8 years of age , because you can make mistakes that will affect the rest of your game . Very frusterating . The game gets more complicated as you move along , with the sinister elements of Gary , Team Rocket , and the not-so-Elite Four creeping slowly in . Caves and tunnels get longer and harder to navigate , and rival pokemon trainers are waiting around every corner for the chance to fight with your Pokemon . Money is also an important factor , because you must purchase things along the way ; tiny globes-pokeballs - to keep your pokemon in , potions to keep them strong , ether to keep their attack energy from running out , ect . If an enemy trainer overpowers you , half your money dissapears - Pokecrooks , perhaps ? Heh heh . Although it is fairly complicated and explaining it totally clearly would take a lllooonnnnggg time , Pokemon is a good game . Personally , the thing that bugs me most is that you can't play as a girl . PS : This game never HAS to end . You can play until you're bored by setting goal for yourself . A definate asset .
    • 016 4  This game is simply addictive ! • 017 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon starts off pretty fun but later it really annoys you .
    • 019 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon Red is a wonderful game ! I enyoyed it because it was interesting , had great graghics , and was even a little challenging . From the thickets of the Viridanian Forest , to the passages of the Unknown Dungean , my Pokemon kept me company . The only setback for Pokemon Red is that it is too time-consuming . I clocked-in way too many hours on the game clock ( in which I probobly should have been doing homework ) because this game is soooooooooo addictive . Here's the deal : if you want strong , healthy , and high-level pokemon , ( which you definatly do ) you need to put in a humungous amount of time and effort into the game . I recomend Pokemon Red ( or any of the other versions ) to anyone who has the spare time . The best place for this game is on long travels or flights when you have way to much time and absolutly nothing to do .

    • 021 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I really liked this game because you get to realizing how a lot of the times you have to pay attention to the more subtle details .
    • 023 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon Red , along with the other Pokemon games , are the most addicting games I have ever played . My little sister rented it , but I ended up playing it forever . I played it for nearly six hours one day because I just couldn't put it down . It was so much fun to raise the pokemon and to make them evolve to their fullest extent . This game is a definite must own !
    • 025 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) It's kind of strange how I manged to get into Pokemon , but here's how it all began : One day , during a Science class , a friend of mine and I were going around our elementary school yard and picking up trash and Tootsie Roll wrappers . The actual goal was as many Tootsie Roll wrappers we each got , that was how many Tootsie Rolls we would get . Anyway , I found a stray Ponyta Pokemon Card in one part of the yard , and my friend found a Dark Charmeleon . My friend said , I'll trade you my Dark Charmeleon for your Ponyta if you want . Well , personally , I didn't want to , I wanted to add this card and start a collection , but my friend's Dark Charmeleon did look sort of cool at the time . I finally gave in and said , well , why not ? So we traded . A few days later , we started acting out some of the episodes at recess ( I'd never seen the episodes at the time ) . My friend was basically making up his own little stories . . . never mind the episodes that were on TV . Later on , my liking for Pokemon grew when my friend decided to bring his Game Boy Color to school , AND his Pokemon Red Version . I thought to myself , hmmm . . . this could be interesting . I asked him what he was playing and if I could watch him play it . he said , sure you can watch . I didn't get to see much of the game because we weren't outside for recess that long . Then , I decided I wanted to get my own version of Pokemon Red . I asked my mom and she said I could . So I did . I got the game ( almost 7 years later and I still haven't beaten it ) and I ended up loving it . So , in conclusion , I'm eighteen and a half years old , a junior at Grafton High School , and I still love Pokemon ( the games more than the episodes ) , but one thing has changed . . . my friend and I don't do reenactments of our favorite episodes anymore like we used to . I really recommend this game .

    • 027 4  The red version is my favorite game . I like this product because the game can be fun and because of the MissingNo . trick and because you can catch a lot of cool and powerful pokemon . I started out with a Charmander and boy does it rock ! Its like the powerfulest one in the game . It gets a little hard sometimes when you are battling a gym leader but you know you can defeat him / her . Pokemon red is the hottest one I ever played . My pokemon are Mewtwo , Gengar , MissingNo . , Golbat , Pidgeot , and I forgot the other one . There all at level 255 from the MissingNo . trick . Apperently , MissingNo . doesn't actually mess up your game . It only messes up the pokemon league hall of fame . Or it can sometimes mess up your graphics when you are using it . Tip : Have strong and a variety types of pokemon . I sugest eeryone should get pokemon red . It's fun and the money is worth it !
    • 030 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) For the person who said , Whoever still likes Pokemon is living in the past , get a life . Seriously , just because Pokemon has died down does not mean that you should stop liking it just because it's unpopular . It's perfectly ok to like Pokemon and if you think anyone who likes it is stupid then you ARE stupid . Don't judge people based on what they like ; that's what they like and it's none of your business . Uhh . . . yeah . Well , anyway , this game is a classic . I still like it even after palying Ruby and Sapphire . Sometimes it's good to get back to the originals . Red and Blue are both pretty much the same but I personally like Red just because it has better Pokemon IMO ( Growlithe yeeaaaahhhhh ! ) But I like Blue too . They're both fun and have their share of glitches ( yay Missingno . ! If for some reason you don't know what Missingno . is then check out Pokemon glitches and you'll get a website that talks about pretty much any Pokemon glitch you can imagine ) , and even though the graphics are bad the heart of the game is there . There is one major fault , though : there isn't much to do after you catch Mewtwo . The later games hav improved this greatly , so if you're one of those people who likes to keep a game forever I would suggest Pokemon Emeral . This game's replay value is great as well ; you can play three different games and get three diferent starters and three different Eevee evolutions . Well there is another major flaw and that is that you can only have one game going at the same time . This is not improved even in the later games and I do not know why . It's okay to like or dislike this game . It's just not ok to bash on people who feel differently than you do . We're all different and some people just have to learn to accept that .

    • 034 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon red is a fun game for anyone . The point of the game is to become a pokemon master , capture all the pokemon , beat the elite four , and have fun . Like pokemon blue , there are different sorts of pokemon in certian places , and some , you can only capture in the other version of the game . Pokemon Red is a fun game for boy or girl . I reccomend it BIG TIME ! ( and belive me , I do not usualy reccomend things )

    • 038 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game is a awesome game . You play Ash Ketchum , a young PKMN trainer who always trys to beat his opponent . This is fun till you catch all 150 PKMN . Also , if you dont have either , get blue instead .
    • 041 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) In October 1998 , my grandmother bought me a little known game called Pokemon .
    • 043 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This is a cool game . I like it because it has adventure and you can go to new cities and caves like Rock Tunnel . It takes a long time to get all 151 Pokemon . It takes about 15 days to beat the game , and it's fun .
    • 051 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game is wonderful.
    • 053 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I think Pokemon Red is awsome ! I love how big the gameplay is ! It is also cool that you can trade pokemon via cable and get with a friend and fight pokemon ! It never gets boring because it's impossible to play the same way twice !

    • 055 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I used to put Pokemon in the same catagory as other virtual pets . Ten I played it for the first time and haven't put it down since . The game is addictive . No matter what your age , it's thrilling when you catch your first pokemon . I found myself beaming all day when I got some of the tougher ones . Whether you're ten or thirty this game is great .
    • 057 4  By now every man , woman andchild has heard of pokemon , and it's reputation . The cute little animals you catch in a ball and then force to fight eachother has captured the hearts of kids in America , and the wallets of parents . Many people hate this game with out even giving it a try . Why is that , the overly priced , merchandice , the barbaric card game ( banned in many elementary schools and pre schools nation wide ) and terrible TV show and average movies . . . When looking at all the [ stuff ] it's easy to forget the concept , and enjoyment of the game itself . The game is an RPG , meaning experience building and random battles , all in a quest ( in this case ) to become the best . You have a rival ( who you name ) and the two of you compete through out the entire game . because this is on Gameboy ( before Color ) the graphics are dull , plain , boring . However after getting past that you have a very deep , very fun , and very addicting game . Catching 151 of the creatures ( 151 through either gameshark or Pokemon Conventions ) and in these cases it is a little difficult to put the game down . Overall the game is worth playing because it is a lot of fun , forget the [ stuff ] that it spawned and play the first game , if you are an RPG Fan you will not be disapointed .
    • 058 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Awright .
    • 060 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) With an innovative design with a sprawling world that should take you a month to complete and even fun side things , this game is it . If you can , battle and trade with a friend . The game is extremely portable and with a story line that is easy for everyone to understand , but deep enough to hook the experienced players , this is a must buy . My only gripe is one that the battles tend to get tedious if you are overmatched in combat . About the middle of the game , the battles seem pointless and almost boring . But you have to make it through to raise your pokemon to a higher level for later in the game . other than that , a very lovable and worthwhile game !
    • 062 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) For us old pokemon fans , we fell in love with red and blue . I personally was a charzard fan in third grade , and this happened to be my first rpg . Everyone seemed to have some version of pokemon . You could even trade them with other people , providing you had the correct linking device . After pokemon fell out of fashion , no one seemed to want those really new games ( except for the new third graders of course ) . The original set of pokemon were the greatest , even the strange ones like jynx . I hated the pokemon show after about a year of watching it everyday and owning all the pokemon merchandise . But I still buy the games and play them , because you can't beat the game play . It's quite simply amazing . I'm sad to say my red version was stolen from me a few years ago , but I hope to purchase it once again at a used video game store . Don't be expecting good graphics . This game has terrible graphics but it's still a wonderful game . Many old rpgs are : ]

    • 066 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game is the original Red version NOT the super hyped up FireRed version for the gameboy advance .
    • 068 4  What the gamez about : You are Ash Ketchum and you are training to become a pokemon master . Luckily , you can change your name at the beginning . You also choose your Rival's Name , which in the show is Gary . When you start out , you have a choice of 3 pokemon . One is fire type , one is water and one is grass . After you choose your pokemon , your rival will choose a pokemon that is strong against your element . Right after you choose you will have to battle your rival . He doesn't have an elemental advantage yet , because his pokemon know no elemental attacks . Through the game you will encounter your rival and have battles . Each time you meet him , he will have more and better pokemon . But the game isn't only about your rivalry . In fact , this is only a little thing to make the game more exciting . After you choose your pokemon , you will travel through towns , caves , dungeons , fields , forests , capturing pokemon and battling trainers . The more battles you have the stronger your pokemon will become . At most major towns , there will be a pokemon gym . There will be a gym leader that you have to battle . If you defeat the gym leader , you will get a pokemon badge and a strong TM . TM's are attacks that you can teach your pokemon . Also , there are pokemon center's and Markets . You can heal your pokemon in pokemon centers , and you can buy item's that you will need on your adventure at Markets . When you have defeated all the gym leaders and you feel that you are strong enough , you can battle the Elite Four . If you defeat them , you will battle the current Champion . Finally , if you beat him , the credits will role and you'll think you beat the game . Wait for the credits to finish , turn of the gameboy . When you turn it back on , you'll be back at Pallet Town . If you have never seen the show or heard anything about this game , you may be stuck . Go to Cerulean City , and find your way to the Unknown Dungeons . Hint ( you will have to surf to get to them ) . If you have defeated the Elite Four , the man standing there should be gone . You'll find yourself in a Dungeon that holds very high level pokemon . If you search through the dungeon long enough , you'll find something very important . I don't want to give anything away though : ) . Over all , this game will keep a younger kid playing it for a long time , especially with the goal to catch all 151 pokemon . You can't catch them all in just Pokemon Red or Blue , you'll have to trade pokemon with a friend to do it . The graphics are pretty good for gameboy , although the battle scenes are terribly pixelated . The music is pretty good , some tunes will stick in your head for a long time . So now it's up to you . . . are ya gonna buy it ?
    • 071 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Beyond and above all the hype surrounding the ' Pokemon ' phenomenon , the fact remains that the game at the centre of it all is extremely good fun . Think of the ' Final Fantasy ' games , but without the boring plot bits , and you have ' Pokemon ' - an approachable RPG that seems superficially simple , but has a surprising depth of strategy behind it . From the perspective of a hard-core , long-time gamer it's heartening to know that something as popular as this does not require a monster PC with a Voodoo5 ( indeed , it could easily be converted for the Commodore 64 ) , and the never-ending , open-ended gameplay is a nice homage to ' Elite ' . The necessity to buy two copies of the game to ' complete ' it , and the massive marketing blitz surrounding the core product is somewhat jading , but don't let that detract from the essential purity of the original .

    • 075 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon Red kept me busy .
    • 077 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I got this game not to long ago and have already played 6 hours on it . It's so much fun ! My two favorite parts are when the Pokemon evolve and when I catch them . Especially rare ones . That's cool . I also have the Blue Version and I have at least 24 hours on it . I love these games .

    • 081 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Buy this game ! I repeat ; BUY THIS GAME ! It is sooooo much fun ! Your Ash Ketchum , a 10 year old boy who dreams of becomming the greatest Pokemon Master of all time ! And to do this , you have to collect pocket monsters , or , Pokemon ! Then you battle them with gym leaders to get badges ! This game , unlike others , has some educational value . . . you have to know how to read to understand the plot . So this isn't a game for anyone under 5 or 6 . This game is a lot of fun and I strongly sugest you buy it !

    • 089 4  8 / 10 Gameplay ( Mainly because of my bitterness toward the snail's pace leveling-up ) 7 / 10 Story 8 / 10 Graphics ( Especially for a 1998 Gameboy game ) 5 / 10 Sound / Music ( Nothing special , but the consistent beeping when you're at low health could drive me to drink ) 7 / 10 Replayability Overall : 9 / 10 I think this is probably one of the best Gameboy games out there . Definitely a great buy , I'll replay it every so often still .

Join us !

    • 093 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) It has always been a habit for children to exhibit and swap their card / sticker / toy collections with their friends in school . The premise of Pokemon - to collect and train pokemon - was the perfect fertile growing field to exploit this fascination children had with collecting things . The first exploit was the TV show , where the characters in the videogame were rendered onto the TV screen . When that became popular enough , the creators rendered the full 150 Pokemon into thousands of different incarnations . Pokemon T-shirts , teddybears , actionfigures , trading cards , stickers , watches etc were all created under the slogan : ' you've gotta catch ' em all ' . . . Parents had a rotten time , that's for sure . And it was this capitalistic , persistent , and continuous explotation of the pokemon name which made the name synonymous with childrens toys . The pokemon legacy was ruined by this exploitation , and the videgame was largely discredited as a childrens fad . But before the TV show , the toys , the trading cards , etc . . the game stood pure and unspoilt by the impending pokemon-craze which was about to accompany it . Everybody loved the game . Pokemon was revered . In the game you play as Ash , whose one single ambition is to become the greatest Pokemon trainer in the world . To do so you must collect pokemon and train them in battle . To catch Pokemon you need to engage in combat with wild Pokemon ( wild animals ) . You choose which of your Pokemon is suitable for the fight and deminish the wild pokemon's strengh little by little untill it becomes weak enough to be captured . Once caught , the wild pokemon will become loyal and obedient . There's no ' set in stone ' rule when it comes to catching Pokemon , if you fancy the look of a Pokemon , then you capture it . Wild Pokemon are scattered throughout the game and you can catch them at any time . To complete the game , you must collect all eight gym badges . Gym badges are given to those who defeat gym owners . Gym owners are professional Pokemon trainers who are hardened by battle experience , and thus , much harder to defeat than normal Pokemon trainers . It takes a long time to collect the badges , because the gyms are sporodically spread throughout the game . Between collecting badges and training Pokemon , you will encounter many RPG elements in the game , puzzles , dungeons , items , etc . . . The game is huge and difficult and can take over 25 hours to complete . It certainly exceeds the expectations of a game merely designed to kill time on a long coach trip , which was what the GB was created for in the first place . Taking into account that the GB is a very primitive console , the kind of experience Pokemon offers exceeds all prior benchmarks in handheld gaming . It's an edifying experience . Not only is it the best GB game , it is one of the best overall games ever .

    • 095 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This was my first EVER gameboy game .
    • 097 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Sometimes the first is the best ! It may have only had 150 pokemon ( excluding Mew ) , and that may not seem like enough now , it sure was back then ! Pretty different , even though it has the same obsticales as its proceeders have . If youre starting out with a Pokemon game , this one is definatly recomended .
    • 102 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I didn't buy it but I knew it would be good so I borrowed it from a friend .
    • 104 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon red is the best of the two red blue but yellow is the best of all . In red you may only be able to catch 139 pokemon but there some stronger one that no other version can cath . just a tip : chouse balbasuar in the bigining of the game it will help the best
    • 106 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon Red is a great game .
    • 108 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I first thought pokemon was uncool untill i traded for this game .
    • 110 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon ( red ) is the best game boy game ever and is on of the top games out of all the rest . If your thinking of buying it you better quick
    • 112 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon Red is a great game . You get to catch and battle Pokemon . If you have a Nintendo 64 later you can battle with the ones you've caught already if you get Pokemon Stadium . I can't stop playing it ( unless my Gameboy runs out of batteries ) . Buy this game ! Gloom Rocks !
    • 114 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I think this game is really fun . I think it is great for car trips , because it gets you hooked . It also never really is over , so after you win , you can keep playing ! It's a really simple plot , but it's hard . Plus , there isn't one way to play the game . In total , says a pokemon website : There are over 1,500 ways this game will turn out

    • 118 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon Red is a very fun game for all ages . It's real great for all ages because there is no violent scenes or anything like that . Once you start playing you won't want to stop until your battery runs out .
    • 120 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I Think this gamboy game is definetly worth your money because of the interaction between two gamboys .
    • 123 4  Pokemon RED , BLUE , and YELLOW versions are definately better than all of the newer versions . Red is my favorite . It's really not any different than Blue and Yellow . Except on Yellow you start out with PIKACHU . This game is all about catching and fighting using your little monsters . Proffessor Oak gives you the choice between Charmander , Squirtle , and Bulbasaur . Charmander is my favorite . He is also the strongest . Especially after he evolves into Charizard ( who is so powerful that even water type Pokemon can barely stop him ) . Squirtle is probably the weakest of the three . It's final form Blastoise is pretty strong for a water type however . Bulbasaur is the most popular . Most people pick him because of his final form Venasaur ( who could get knocked out with one attack of Charizard's Fire Spin attack ) . I picked Charmander and he is level one hundred . Of course he is Charizard now . I have all three legendary birds . Moltres , Zapdos , and Articuno . The best team is Charizard , Moltres , Zapdos , Articuno , Mewtwo , and Gyarados . I have all of thes Pokemon level one hundred . Here's a little secret to get unlimited Rare candy and Master Balls . Put the item you want to copy in the sixth item spot then talk to the guy in Viridian city who says Ah I had my coffee and I feel great then watch him catch Weedle or whatever else it is then fly to Fushia city surf down to the Seafoam islands and surf up and down the side where the land touches the water . When MISSINGNO appears run away and you will have unlimited Rare candies or Master balls . Well I hope my review was helpful .
    • 125 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Several months ago I thought that the Pokemon game and telivision series was a complete waste of time . Then , my five year old brother bought the Pokemon Red Gameboy Game . I picked the game up and immediately started to enjoy myself . You will have great fun experimenting with different types of Pokemon . I thought it was very interesting working with Pokemon of different types , such as fire , water , etc . I disagree with a previous review stating that the game will get boring . The game will only get boring if you experiment with the Gameshark features of the game , it will lose its fun . The game is not about having these electronic creatures as your friends , it is about showing them off to your friends , impressing them with your training ability using the link cable . In this sense you can continually replay the game using different types of Pokemon , finding out which you like best . In this sense the game never gets boring and old . It is a fabulous game .
    • 127 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I bought this game primarily to find out what all the hype was about .
    • 129 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) One of the better roleplaying games for Game Boy . Great for long car rides or plane rides .
    • 131 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon red is a really awesome game .
    • 133 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon Red is a very enjoyable game .
    • 135 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) People are insulting this game for no reason except for its childish hype , and believe me this game is not as childish as expected .
    • 137 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) On 02 / 14 / 1998 , I recieved a game that ultimately became an obsession for me .
    • 140 4  Last year , I remember every boy in my class had Red or Blue Pokemon . ( Well , so did I , the only girl in the class that even liked Pokemon ) Every time I went to the Video Game stores , Red and Blue where always off the shelfs . I went through so much trouble trying to find Red . But now that's all over . No one even cares about Red and Blue now , because of all those other pokemon versions have way better features . Yellow has a cute little Pikachu following you as your companion . Gold and Silver no have 100 new Pokemon to catch . Crystal has animated Pokemon that wag tails , blink eyes , flap wings and move while battling . Red and Blue is the original game , and it's just as fun as the others . Just , well , older . I still love the game , though .
    • 141 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I purchased this game for my daughter who still had found her gameboy from 1999 . She really wanted the red version again , so I purchased it . She said it was as fun as she remembers ! The game itself was in excellent condition .
    • 143 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) People don't understand why there's a blue then red version . . . IT WAS 1999 . as the original gameboy was coming to an end , nintendo started to put color in their games . They did this with Pokemon . It was supposed to make it one full color but decided other kids might want different colors so they made both red and blue for different kids . thanks

    • 149 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I have been playing pokemon for 13 years , before I could properly read , I am 16 now and am proud to say I still play . Children refuse to play Pokemon because there minds have been dominated by new age graphics and first person shooters . Kids , it is good . If you try to argue otherwise , then you clearly haven't expirienced some of the truly awful games out there . Before you blindly hate on Pokemon merely because of it's popularity , Try giving strategy games a second look .

    • 151 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) everyone loves this game , i mean come on . but one of my biggest problems is the fact that you can't catch all the pokemon by yourself , you have to trade with others . to me , this seems unneccesary and annoying and it only makes it so i will never catch all the pokemon .

    • 155 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) this game is awesome ! buy it if you want to have hours of fun . also you can play it over and over again and it doesent get old just choose a different starter pokemon and different pokemon along the way . here is the synopsis of the game ! Become the greatest Pokémon trainer in the world ! Start your Pokémon Game Boy adventure by choosing a tame Pokémon at the home of the great Pokémon master Professor Oak . Then start your journey . Your mission : Collect all 150 Pokémon , just like Ash , using your own Pokémon to capture others . Along the way , several skilled trainers , such as Gary , and many minor trainers will challenge you to Pokémon duels . You can't back down , so be ready for anything ! Remember , Pokémon are not ordinary creatures . To collect all 150 , you'll need to train captured Pokémon so they evolve . For instance , a captured Caterpie will evolve into a Metapod , which will then turn into a Butterfree . Each transformation adds more power to the Pokémon-giving you more power to defeat and capture other Pokémon . The Red & Blue versions of the game each carry their own variety of Pokémon to defeat , collect , and train . To get all 150 , trade Pokémon with your friends using the Game Link Cable , which allows the transfer of Pokémon between Game Paks .

    • 159 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Let us be honest with ourselves . This is an old game . And yet it rocks most hard , say thankee . It's also highly addictive . The point of Pokemon is simple : catch cute , little , animated talking monsters with magic , plastic balls , and use them to kick the living daylights out of the cute talking monsters of your enemies . So in truth , it's a lot like real life . Plus , said monsters are fully changeable . You can give them a name , teach them special fighting skills , and even control how much they grow . This makes them much better than hamsters as pets go . Plus , its got ninjas ! I'm not only talking about a ninja master who uses Pokemon to duel you ( I guess he never learned how to use shuriken or swords or stuff ) , I also mean you can name you Pokemon things like : Mifune or Hayabusa or Zatoichi or Swordsman with an Umbrella ( that probably won't fit ) . Of course , you can also name it Winky-dinky-do , if it do please ya . But I digress . Yes , Pokemon shows its age among modern video games . But so does Pong . And Pong is still mildly amusing . But without Pong , there'd be no Pokemom . And without Pokemon , there'd be no modern video gamage . And without video games , I'd have to actually face my family , friends and problems , and learn actual skills ! So play Pokemon ! It's better than Pong , and many other video games . Trust me . I've been there .

    • 161 4  pokemon red was the first pokemon game I bought even though its the same as blue i prefer red version. You should buy this game ! ! Its sooooooo much better than ruby version , ruby is a big disapointment. If you want a good starting pokemon choose charmander even though people say bulbasaur is the best maybe at the begining but not in the end . ps don't catch missingno unless you want to glitch up your game .

    • 170 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I think that Pokemon Red is really fun . Raising the pokemon can sometimes be really tough , but in the end they eventually get stronger . I recommend this game for other people who don't have Pokemon Red and is thinking of buying it . Pokemon Blue is terrific , too !
    • 172 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I think this is a great game for everyone .

    • 180 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I wasn't sure at first , but this game got me hooked on the Pokemon craze , even though I'm 19 and at university ! I just love having to collect and train all the different Pokemon , and try and become the world's best trainer of Pokemon . Even the game pak for the Gameboy is a nice colour , just to top it all off !
    • 184 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I have had this game for about 2 months and i still can't put it down ! ! ! it is the best game i have ever bought . i love it and it would be fun for kids of all ages ! ! ! ! ! !
    • 187 4  In Pokemon Red , you play as a young boy trainer , and you have to help him be the greatest Pokemon Trainer among time ! You must capture , battle and trade 150 Pokemon in the Kanto region , where your home-town Pallet is in . You capture Pokemon by throwing a Pokeball at them , and you even get to trade Pokemon with your friend with a Link Cable and two Game-Boy systems ! You also must face many other trainers who are willing to be the Pokemon Masters too , and you must even defeat your rival ! There's also Team Rocket , a trio of skilled thieves who steal things from many places to get money . You can also go to a Pokemart to buy many things for your Pokemon , and even heal it in a Pokemon Center ! You must win badges from many gym leaders who practice battling over there ! I loved this game ! If you liked the TV shows , I reccomend this game !
    • 191 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I think this is the bast game I own ! This ( Red ) version gives you better Pokemon than the Blue version .

    • 193 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) At first I thought this game was like the little Virtual Pets but on Game Boy ! It was totally different ! It's an RPG about collecting and trainer Pokemon to become the best . I got started and couldn't quit ! This is the first version I got for Game Boy !
    • 195 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I believe that Pokemon Red is an extremely interesting stragedy game that requires alot of thought to play as well as a fertile imagination . Complex stragedies are the key to gain all eight badges and beating the powerful Elite Four .
    • 197 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) It's really cool , to see how the Pokemons get stronger , but it can be tough ! The red edition is 1 / 400 better than the blue one : - ) . But they just are cool . I didn't think that you could do something so good with a little GamBoy !

    • 199 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Pokemon was a great concept game that should've appealed to all ages , but really , the Pokemon culture and TV show and all that B / S completely wrecked it . Just look at some of the reviews here . Some of them include cliche stuff from the show such as the Rocket Team horse and Go Pokemon . It's really sad to see a great concept game like this go down the tubes now with the new releases that tie into the crap pop culture stuff . Anyway , it's a great game , but don't play it in public , hide in your room and never tell anyone .

    • 201 4  I have no idea why I still play Pokemon from time to time . I was into it before it became popular , and I still enjoy the games ( not the cards . . . . . . ) more than 2 years after the fad breathed it's last . Yes , new titles have been coming out , but no one seems to like them very much and they are not changing the game enough to make them worth buying . Anyway , about the game . You start out as a young boy living with your mother , and set out to become the world's greatest Pokemon trainer . When you try to leave town , Professer Oak will give you a starter Pokemon ( the only real difference between this one and Yellow is that in Yellow , you MUST start with Pikachu ) . Once you have picked one , you must battle your rival , and then you can leave . The rest is obvious . . . The main reason I still like this game is that it has amazing , Zelda-esque depth to it . Many puzzles , and 15 element types of Pokemon . Certain types are stronger against others , while each type has its weaknesses , too . There are a total of 150 Pokemon to be caught . However , some only appear in the Red version and some only in Blue . You must link to the Blue version to catch all 150 ! ( To make this easier , some people buy a Red AND Blue AND a Game Link Cable so they could complete the game on their own ) . Overall , this game is surprisingly fun and amusing , and has a great depth to it which will please many RPG ( role-playing game ) lovers . Great game , so if you like RPGs or adventure games , get this one , if you don't already have it .
    • 202 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I am the sister of a boy who has caught the severe illness of Pokemon fever.Pokemon are not even on my list of things to check out.Surprisingly enough the 2 Pokemon games are great. It has enough action to keep you interested , but at the same time a lot of thinking involved to do battels , capture pokemon , earn badges , and even make some poke money. As I said before I am not very fond of pokemon , but this game is worth checking out .

    • 207 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) My son wanted the Red Version soooo bad , so he used some of his allowance to get it . He likes it but he'd much rather play the Gold Version that he's had for much longer .
    • 209 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game was a good start for the Pokemon franchise but to strictly say . Very straight forward game and not very difficult . In my opinon this is the kinda game you would play in your free time or for old times sake . The controls are identical to Blue and Yellow and gameplay is simple .

    • 211 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game is really fun and I prefer it over blue version because it has better pokemon in it . It is only a click away . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
    • 213 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This was one of my first ever games when i was in the 1st grade and now im in the 7th grade and i still love it ! It's got a great story line and it's not to hard to beat either ! Its really great !
    • 216 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) In pokemon red you don't just catch pokemon you train them and play with them then you get the link and you can chalange you friends to battle . Pokemon red is a fun ( yet chalanging ) game for young minds to decide how to raise their pokemon

    • 218 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game may be old but it's a pretty good game . I don't know all the new pokemon ( or hardly any ) so this game is great for me . The animation is not to great but hey-it's a gameboy game ! It has very intresting music that gets annoying when you turn it on but i just turn it off . I say the music and the looks of people are the only bad things .
    • 220 4  My 8 - year-old's favorite game series . And if you're worried about video game time taking away from reading time , make sure you get your kid ( s ) into roleplaying games . That way , they get both . . . and though Pokemon won't solve it all . . . you'll never have to nag them to go play Pokemon !
    • 221 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game is so much fun ! Once you get started , you just can't stop ! It has to be the best video game ever ! Do yourself a favor and get it ! You'll like it , I promise you that !
    • 223 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game is cool because other games have vilence on it but pokemon red , blue and yellow do not have it so if you wan't to buy a game buy pokemon red , blue and yellow because this game is very fun to own .
    • 225 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I have to be honest and say that I am beginning to loathe the pokemon fad emensely .
    • 227 4  Describing Pokémon's been done to death . I'll compare the different Pokémon games and series . Having only owned Red and not Blue , I can't fairly compare them . However , the only difference is the Pokémon you can obtain , and in that both seem equal . Comparing Red / Blue is different . Yellow tries so hard to match up with the anime , yet comes up sickeningly short . It adds a poor plot where there should be no plot , at the expense of gameplay . Red / Blue are superior . The puzzles and dungeons of the chromatics ( Red / Blue / Yellow ) are difficult , far more so than those of the metallics ( Gold / Silver / Crystal ) and the gems ( Ruby / Sapphire ) . However , the final bosses are lacking compared to the Gems ' . The Gems also have some decent plot . I would say that the gems and chromatics are equal , and the metallics are lacking . However , only buy the chromatics ( which are incompatible with the gems ) if you've exhausted the gems . Still , it's a better choice than the metallics .

    • 231 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) This game is one of the funest Game Boy Color games ever !
    • 233 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) PokeMon Red is an okay game and it is fun the first couple times you play it . After that it becomes boring and repetitive . I recommend borrowing it from a friend .
    • 235 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) when i first got this game , i was addicted to it . but that was about a year ago . after playing with it for about a year i started to realize what a bad game it was . it is slow , and there is no excitement .
    • 237 4  Out of all my friends , I must have been the last kid to get this game . I was not regretting it when I asked for it and got it for Christmas , because this game was so cool at first . On Christmas day of 1998 , I must have played this game all day . In three days , I had all eight badges , and enough to take on the Elite Four . It took me a little while to beat them , I did . And that's when I got sick of the game . The thing is , after you beat the Elite Four , what you have is a group of superpowerful Pokemon that can only fight wild Pokemon , and you need to catch the rest of the Pokemon . The game becomes a big nothing . It's fun to raise low level Pokemon if you still have trainers you haven't fought , but besides that , it's a pretty big nothing . All you can really do is fight wild Pokemon , walk around , get lost ( Which is hard because the game's map is too easy to figure out ) , and go shopping for items you probably won't need . I have never gotten all 151 Pokemon , because it gets so boring at around 120 that I can't stand it . The game is fun if you use cheats like starting off with Mew and multiplying items , but besides that , it's pretty boring . I'd say to buy it , but the fad is over now , and nobody cares . Playing Pokemon these days makes you an outcast . Only buy this if you're not afraid of ruining whatever reputation you have . PS : Don't say my review was helpful just because you're an angry fan . I get that a lot . If you didn't find it helpful , that's when you criticize my review , but otherwise , just don't say anything .
    • 238 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I got this gme for Christmas , and after awhile , I couldn't put it down ! After about 56 hours , I had beaten Mewtwo . I am trying to get a cheap Gameshark so I can train and catch ' em all !
    • 240 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) I played this game expecting more . With all the attention it's been getting and all my friends raving on and on about their beloved pokemon . Dont get me wrong , it's a good game , but c'mon not THAT good .
    • 242 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) It is quite a good game when you start playing you cannot get off it and when you are the actual pokemon master it does get a bit boring so I beat the elite four ten times BORING ! I would recomend that you buy pokemonyellow , I have not got it but I have played on it and it is absoloutely AMAZING !
    • 244 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Its not nearly as good as I thought it would be . It is an easy game with tons of tedious repitition . It was fun for the first hour , you spend most of your time in tedious battles . It has a crumby storyline , and isnt nearly as good as Zelda 64 . This game shouldnt be considered an RPG , because its the worst one I've played .
    • 248 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) Our world is full of people who are thouroghly convinced that by chucking little plastic balls at mutated animals you can gain a new friend . Have mercy on my innocent soul . Save your money , you could use it if you've blown it all on the other products . No one's really going to care in ten years if become a pokemon master or not . Save your money and your time . Not that you're actually regarding this review . Sigh .
    • 252 4  This review is from : Pokemon - Red Version ( Game Cartridge ) My brother bought me this game for my birthday , the first day I enjoyed it , but after a while its boring . all you do is battle other pokemon . I would recomend another game . Susie
