It is also really fun to raise your pokemon and get a bond with them ( In this game I started out with a Charmander and I have become so attached to it I coudn't let it go if someone offered me a Mew for it ! You also learn to respect your dream team . The only problem is that the cheat codes make it to easy to raise your pokemon incredibly high . There are some VERY , VERY , VERY tough mazes to navigate through . It's really fun when you start out . You must find your way without HMs . However I still found it quite addictive . I think the collecting part of it makes it interesting even though I know I will never collect all of the Pokemon . What I really want to do right now is just beat it once through , and so I've given up on collecting for now . Overall this is an excellent game and definitely worth some of the hype if for no other reason than its the first RPG successfully targeted at younger children .

I'm 29 , and in general I hate Pokemon . I think it's one of the most over-commercialized things I've seen in my whole life . But my kid loves them , and as a result I checked this game out to see if I thought he'd like it as a gift . As it turns out , it's WAY above his level ( he's only 4 ) , but in the process of checking the game out I really decided this game was pretty cool . As has probably been said about 50 times already , the main aspect of the game is battling your pokemon against others , in an attempt to capture as many of them as possible . Although it doesn't sound like that big of a deal , what I found most interesting was this : In the game you can have up to six pokemon with you at any given time to use in battles , and there are something like 150 of them throughout the game that you can collect and use . There are several types of pokemon , all of which have certain strengths and weaknesses against other types . So as a result when you go into battle not only do you have to think about how advanced your current party is getting ( which is all there is to most RPG's I've seen on the gameboy ) , you also have to take into consideration which pokemon out of all those you've collected will do the best in that group of six that you can take with you on your quest . On the downside , unlike some of the RPG's on the gameboy that have been considered among the best such as Zelda and Final Fantasy , there doesn't seem to be a lot in the way of quests , side quests , or other things you need to do , other than just walk around an area fighting pokemon until they get strong enough to beat a gym trainer , which opens up the next area for you to wander around in fighting until you get strong enough to open up the next , and etc . This probably makes it a game that is good for younger players who might have trouble following all the different storyline aspects of some of the bigger RPGs , but still as a result it leaves me wanting a lot more story depth than there is . The game has a lot of interesting aspects , and it can be fun to find and train all the new varieties of pokemon as the game progresses , but I feel anyone who is a teenager or older would probably get more enjoyment out of one of the heftier RPG's .

I played it first starting with charmander and got stuck and could do nothing and got bored and didn't play it for a year or so . When I picked it up again . I haven't put it down . I have beat the elite four and have 67 pokemon . I am still interested . I have taken this on many long trips . Its good for that but in the car it might make you car sick . I think this game is the only pokemon thing you need . The toys are pointless . The cards are just peices of paper , and the tv show and movie is dull . Get this game ( start with bulbasur )

124 4 First off let me say this : I'm 29 , and in general I hate Pokemon . I think it's one of the most over-commercialized things I've seen in my whole life . But my kid loves them , and as a result I checked this game out to see if I thought he'd like it as a gift . As it turns out , it's WAY above his level ( he's only 4 ) , but in the process of checking the game out I really decided this game was pretty cool . As has probably been said about 50 times already , the main aspect of the game is battling your pokemon against others , in an attempt to capture as many of them as possible . Although it doesn't sound like that big of a deal , what I found most interesting was this : In the game you can have up to six pokemon with you at any given time to use in battles , and there are something like 150 of them throughout the game that you can collect and use . There are several types of pokemon , all of which have certain strengths and weaknesses against other types . So as a result when you go into battle not only do you have to think about how advanced your current party is getting ( which is all there is to most RPG's I've seen on the gameboy ) , you also have to take into consideration which pokemon out of all those you've collected will do the best in that group of six that you can take with you on your quest . On the downside , unlike some of the RPG's on the gameboy that have been considered among the best such as Zelda and Final Fantasy , there doesn't seem to be a lot in the way of quests , side quests , or other things you need to do , other than just walk around an area fighting pokemon until they get strong enough to beat a gym trainer , which opens up the next area for you to wander around in fighting until you get strong enough to open up the next , and etc . This probably makes it a game that is good for younger players who might have trouble following all the different storyline aspects of some of the bigger RPGs , but still as a result it leaves me wanting a lot more story depth than there is . The game has a lot of interesting aspects , and it can be fun to find and train all the new varieties of pokemon as the game progresses , but I feel anyone who is a teenager or older would probably get more enjoyment out of one of the heftier RPG's .

However my hate of all things pokemon was not always so . When i first played the game it was fun , the idea of inslaving little cute beasties , and then making them pit-fight was very appealing . So as soon as I got to the sixth badge my intrest just petered out and I stopped playing . By that time i ahd begun to turn sour to the whole pokemon thing anyway . I suppose that the reason this is so popular among newbie RPGers is that it requirers little skill , and falls back on repetiveness .
247 4 This game was made to put insomniacs to sleep.The graphics are horrible , you can't catch ' em all unless you want to spend lots of $ $ getting the blue and yellow , as well as red . And now that they've come out with gold , silver , and crystal , you have at least a hundred more to catch . This game is too easy , even for a beginner like me , unless you count catching the rare pokemon . Basically , all you are doing the whole game is beating the brains out of nonexistant creatures for the purpose of training and battling them against other trainers . Then , once you have beaten those trainers , you must battle the elite four for the sole purpose of being #1 .

The entire formula began here , and just about everything mentioned above has been done in each and every main series Pokemon game hereafter .
What was perhaps the strangest thing about Pokemon is that the game was surprisingly deep in terms of combat . It was your traditional turn-based combat . Simple , yet it was so complex . For one , the game has a Rock / Paper / Scissors method to it . Every Pokemon has a type , and every type has its own strengths and weaknesses . For example , Water is strong up against fire but it is weak vs . Grass . Grass is weak vs . fire etc . etc . No Pokemon is invincible . They all have a weakness to some type . Though in these versions the psychics definitely have an unfair advantage as the type they're weak against ( bug ) is almost non-existent and there are hardly any bug type attacks .
In the battle menu you're given a list of commands . Fight , Item , PKMN , or Run . You can switch Pokemon you've caught in and out of battle on the fly , but it'll usually cost you a turn . It's the strategic portion of Pokemon that makes battling fun and addictive . As you go through the game you'll be challenged by trainers and you never know what they'll throw at you ! It's completely unpredictable and some of them are tough . It's also interesting because with 150 different Pokemon , the amount of teams you can make are endless , and it really makes you think about what types you want in your roster . Because most of the Pokemon types are weak vs . more than just one type . It's also important that you give them a variety of moves , as the moves are also typed . On paper it doesn't seem like much , but when you actually play the game , you'll find a clog in your drain you didn't even know you had because you thought your team was perfect . . . but then that one Pokemon comes along and exposes your fatal flaw .
Pokemon was no short game . It was full of all sorts of side quests . From the Safari Zone , to catching the Legendary Birds , to the Unknown Dungeon . There was plenty to do , and even after the game was over there was STILL more to accomplish . Of course , your main accomplishment was getting them all . Pokemon could easily keep you busy for well over 60 hours . In 1998 this is an amazing feat seeing as how most RPGs of TODAY don't keep you busy that long . The main quest itself only took a measly 15 hours or so , but all the extra content kept you on your toes .
Even more , Pokemon was one of the few Gameboy Games that made excellent use of the link cable . Since Red and Blue versions had different Pokemon , some only appeared in certain versions . You couldn't for example , catch a Magmar in the Red version , but you could in Blue . How then , were Red players supposed to catch all 150 ? By trading . Until Pokemon came around , my link cable was collecting dust . Trading was usually a slow grueling process , though . Traded Pokemon also got an experience boost so they were easier to train .
Even more exciting than trading , however , was what really made Pokemon a blast to play : Battling . You and your friends could get together and battle one another ! Test out your Pokemon teams against your friends . They were , more often not , far better to battle against than the games trainers . It's always interesting to see who your opponents heavy hitter is . With your friends it was always interesting . Imagine how embarrassed you were to say a certain Pokemon sucked only to discover that the trainer actually did a good job training ?
As far as the game looks and sounds , it didn't really look all that great when it was released in 1998 ( it was after all , a game made in 1995 ) . On the original gameboy it was pretty grainy ( but very clear on the Gameboy Pocket ) and of course it was black or white ( unless you played it on a Super Gameboy or Gameboy Color ) . For a Gameboy game , though , it actually wasn't too bad . It was annoying to watch a Pokemon simply flinch to attack , and some of the animations weren't all that great , but it was to be expected due to the Gameboy's limitations . The music , however , was fantastic . The tunes were catchy - - particularly the trainer battles and gym leader battles . The only really annoying thing was the sound effects . They weren't all that great , and its a shame that Nintendo actually continues to use those exact same sound effects in Pokemon games today . Still , for what it's worth , this was the game you wanted on the Gameboy .
Pokemon is a classic . It'll always be a classic . No matter who you are , if you played Pokemon ten years ago , the craze was completely undeniable . If you got addicted like I did , chances are you're still playing today . 014 4 One word : PLAYBACK . My sister first owned this game in 1998 , and since then I have owned MANY Pokémon games for both Game Boy Color and N64 . And let me tell you , the original is always the best ! Pokémon Red and Blue are the best games ever created for Game Boy Color ! First of all , people of any age can enjoy this game . It is cute and innocent enough to entertain children , but the strategy and the level of gameplay make it a worthwhile game for adults . Everyone will love this game .
You start out as a trainer named Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town . Your mission is to become a Pokémon Master by catching 150 Pokémon ( 151 if you count Mew ) and becoming the champion of the Elite Four . To do this , you must train and catch Pokémon , raise them , and even trade them between Red and Blue versions using your Link Cable or the infrared port on your Game Boy Color . This is both fun and time-consuming , which is great when you are at home sick or bored on a stormy day . Pokémon are raised by winning battles and / or using Rare Candy . Raising Pokémon may sound tedious , but you will change your mind about that when you actually play for yourself . Pokémon is addictive from the moment you start your game all the way through . You will meet many new people on the way , become a hero , and win new items and abilities as you go along .
As Ash , you travel through the world of Kanto , which is divided into a number of cities and towns . A map will be your guide as you make your way through the vast world of Pokémon . Explore caves , oceans , tall grass , and rocky paths on your way . Each town or city usually has its own Pokémon Gym , with a Gym Leader which is something like a Boss . Each time you beat a Gym Leader you receive a badge . You need eight badges to battle the Elite Four and the current Elite Four Champion . There are different diversions in each city and town , for example , Celadon City's department store and casino , and one of my personal favorites , Fuschia City's Safari Zone .
Trainers can be found everywhere , good and bad , from Team Rocket invading the radio station , to the gyms , in the water , on the road , and pretty much anywhere you go . Random Pokémon appear and battle you if you are in a cave , tall grass , or in the water . The wild Pokémon you come across are the ones that you can catch if you have Pokéballs with you . Items such as the bike and repel can help prevent you from running into too many Pokémon if you are trying to get somewhere . If your Pokémon are tired or injured , you can stop at a Pokémon center and heal them for free ! You can also store Pokémon via a computer terminal located within every Pokémon Center .
The music is so cute ! And there is a lot of different music , so it doesn't get repetitive .
If you are lucky enough to own Pokémon Stadium , you can play Red or Blue on your TV screen using a Transfer Pak ! You can also use the Pokémon you raised on your Red or Blue game to battle in Pokémon Stadium .
Overall , this is one of the best games I have ever played . It is still fun after years of gameplay , as you never fully run out of stuff to do . If you want to get into Pokémon , or if you're an old fan that never quite got around to getting the game , this is the game for you ! Pokémaniacs rule !

When you have to choose between the 3 starter pokemon ( bulbasaur , charmander , or squirtle ) , I always have a fight over Squirtle and Charmander . But I usually choose squirtle . We pulled off quite nicely in the pokemon league along with my fearow , nidoking , rapidash , dragonite , and Jolteon .
If you are planning to get pokemon yellow . . . . umm . . . how should I put this . . . . DON'T ! ! ! ! ! ! It's a TOTAL RIP OFF ! You don't even get to choose a good starter pokemon ! Only a dim wit little rodent !

This is a great classic game . You begin as a new Pokemon trainer , and soon select your first Pokemon . The choices are Charmander , a fire type ; squirtle , a water type ; or bulbasaur , a fire type . Interestingly , three Pokemon you choose from are like rock / paper / scissors , charmander beats bulbasaur , squirtle beats charmander , and bulbasaur beats squirtle . Soon , you rival chooses his Pokemon ( annoyingly , its always the one that has the type advantage , like if you choose squirtle he will choose charmander . You are then given the task of completing a complete guide of Pokemon by catching all of them . In order to beat the game , you only need the first 150 Pokemon , however , there is also a legendary number 151 Mew . You catch Pokemon by using one you already have to weaken it , then catching it with a Pokeball . Once you catch a Pokemon , you may use it to fight others , but you can only have up to 6 Pokemon at a time . Along the way , you will encounter other trainers you may battle . There are regular trainers , which you battle only for money , fun , and experience . However , there are also gym leaders , which are specialized trainers with stronger Pokemon than regular trainers in their area have . There are 8 in all , and once you beat them , you may then battle the elite four , who are much tougher than gym leaders and you have to fight all of them in succession . You also encounter your rival throughout the game . And he becomes Pokemon League Champion , however , once you defeat him , you become Pokemon League Champion . There are also troublemaking team rocket members that you can and sometimes have to battle as well . Their boss is also the leader of gym 8 . I have found the gym leaders and team rocket members are actually exceedingly easy if you know what you're doing , however , the elite 4 is very tough , especially since you have to face them all toghether . There are also legendary Pokemon , which are considered to be part of the 151 total , and they are very rewarding but challenging to catch . Also , one cool thing is there is a lot of moves ( although some are kind of stupid ) and certain Pokemon have strengths over others . For example , fire takes out grass easily . However , you can beat the game just by having stronger Pokemon , however , this is actually harder than using strategy . Because it takes a great length of time to level up , while a skilled player can quickly catch a Pokemon with a type advantage . And to the guy who said he beat this game in a hour . . . . if you think this game is easy , than you should quit playing videogames altoghether , because you obviously are such a great master of everything . Hmm , giving Americans a raw deal , aye Nintendo ? You know we buy into your promotions instead of demanding that you make stuff available in the games . In Japan , gamers would be outraged , but you know you can take advantage of us Americans ? Okay , go ahead . But despite the fact that it isn't as good as the Japenese version or a perfect game , Pokemon Red is still one of my favorites .

Trade with friends to capture them all . I did and I have 151 types of pokemon . Also you have to beat a group called the ELITE FOUR and if you don't YOU HAVE TO START FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME . Hope you had as much fun as I did when I played this game .

Being a sixteen year old boy , I thought that it would be hardfor me to enjoy this game . How wrong I was ! This has got to be thebest game ever released on any system , and itdoes the game boy proud . Walking around , you fight around 150 pokemon and hopefully catch them all ! Hey , who else but Nintendo could come up with such brilliant names like Nidoking , Kingler , Guldeen and more . I don't want to tell you what to do , but I suggest that you go out now and buy this as soon as possible , because if you don't own it you're missing a treat . Now , some immortal words SQUIRTLE SQUIRTLE SQUIRTLE PIKACHU !

This game is great ! You'll love it . The ESRB rating is E so everyone could play it . It's not violent . It's a toy which tells your kindness and love . So click the ADD TO SHOPPING CART button and it will make your life better .
So complex . Nothing was more addictive , nothing was more fun than playing Pokemon . If you remember the craze ( the REAL craze , presently it isn't nearly as strong as it was back then ) , then you remember what it was like to go to school back in those days . Suddenly EVERYONE had a Gameboy . Suddenly even those who didn't normally play games or even know what the hell a Gameboy was , had it . And you'd go up to your friends and you'd trade Pokemon , you'd taunt each other about who was the better champion when you battled . You got in arguments over who the best starter was . Then you learned of those glitches to get all your Pokemon to level 100 by duplicating the Rare Candies . You caught Missingno and M-Block and caught Safari Zone Pokemon by exploiting what may very well be one of the most widely known glitches in video game history . And of course , you went to catch them all , and you probably had that ONE friend who you deemed your rival and you had to catch ' em all before he did . If you remember all this , you're a true Pokemon fan . This isn't a myth , this game debuted , sold gazillions of copies and started a craze that - - while it isn't as strong - - still exists today . This was one of the heights of gaming period .

When the TV series took off in America , the games came next and as I said , they sold more copies than the latest installment of Harry Potter . I'm not kidding .
Red and Blue began almost everything you currently see in the series today . The game begins with you naming your character ( you couldn't choose between a boy or a girl in this one ) and then your rival . Again , if you had Pokemon fever you probably named your main character Ash and your rival was named Gary ( even the strategy guides referred to them as such ) . It began with Professor Oak letting you have a Pokemon of your choice ( between 3 starters ) and then ultimately he'd send you on a journey with a Pokedex and have you document the Pokemon you'd find . Along the way , you'd have to deal with Team Rocket , the bad guys who are always causing trouble and stealing everyone's Pokemon , as well as gather eight badges so you could challenge the Elite Four and become a Pokemon League Champion . The entire formula began here , and just about everything mentioned above has been done in each and every main series Pokemon game hereafter .
What was perhaps the strangest thing about Pokemon is that the game was surprisingly deep in terms of combat . It was your traditional turn-based combat . Simple , yet it was so complex . For one , the game has a Rock / Paper / Scissors method to it . Every Pokemon has a type , and every type has its own strengths and weaknesses . For example , Water is strong up against fire but it is weak vs . Grass . Grass is weak vs . fire etc . etc . No Pokemon is invincible . They all have a weakness to some type . Though in these versions the psychics definitely have an unfair advantage as the type they're weak against ( bug ) is almost non-existent and there are hardly any bug type attacks .
In the battle menu you're given a list of commands . Fight , Item , PKMN , or Run . You can switch Pokemon you've caught in and out of battle on the fly , but it'll usually cost you a turn . It's the strategic portion of Pokemon that makes battling fun and addictive . As you go through the game you'll be challenged by trainers and you never know what they'll throw at you ! It's completely unpredictable and some of them are tough . It's also interesting because with 150 different Pokemon , the amount of teams you can make are endless , and it really makes you think about what types you want in your roster . Because most of the Pokemon types are weak vs . more than just one type . It's also important that you give them a variety of moves , as the moves are also typed . On paper it doesn't seem like much , but when you actually play the game , you'll find a clog in your drain you didn't even know you had because you thought your team was perfect . . . but then that one Pokemon comes along and exposes your fatal flaw .
Pokemon was no short game . It was full of all sorts of side quests . From the Safari Zone , to catching the Legendary Birds , to the Unknown Dungeon . There was plenty to do , and even after the game was over there was STILL more to accomplish . Of course , your main accomplishment was getting them all . Pokemon could easily keep you busy for well over 60 hours . In 1998 this is an amazing feat seeing as how most RPGs of TODAY don't keep you busy that long . The main quest itself only took a measly 15 hours or so , but all the extra content kept you on your toes .
Even more , Pokemon was one of the few Gameboy Games that made excellent use of the link cable . Since Red and Blue versions had different Pokemon , some only appeared in certain versions . You couldn't for example , catch a Magmar in the Red version , but you could in Blue . How then , were Red players supposed to catch all 150 ? By trading . Until Pokemon came around , my link cable was collecting dust . Trading was usually a slow grueling process , though . Traded Pokemon also got an experience boost so they were easier to train .
Even more exciting than trading , however , was what really made Pokemon a blast to play : Battling . You and your friends could get together and battle one another ! Test out your Pokemon teams against your friends . They were , more often not , far better to battle against than the games trainers . It's always interesting to see who your opponents heavy hitter is . With your friends it was always interesting . Imagine how embarrassed you were to say a certain Pokemon sucked only to discover that the trainer actually did a good job training ?
As far as the game looks and sounds , it didn't really look all that great when it was released in 1998 ( it was after all , a game made in 1995 ) . On the original gameboy it was pretty grainy ( but very clear on the Gameboy Pocket ) and of course it was black or white ( unless you played it on a Super Gameboy or Gameboy Color ) . For a Gameboy game , though , it actually wasn't too bad . It was annoying to watch a Pokemon simply flinch to attack , and some of the animations weren't all that great , but it was to be expected due to the Gameboy's limitations . The music , however , was fantastic . The tunes were catchy - - particularly the trainer battles and gym leader battles . The only really annoying thing was the sound effects . They weren't all that great , and its a shame that Nintendo actually continues to use those exact same sound effects in Pokemon games today . Still , for what it's worth , this was the game you wanted on the Gameboy .
Pokemon is a classic . It'll always be a classic . No matter who you are , if you played Pokemon ten years ago , the craze was completely undeniable . If you got addicted like I did , chances are you're still playing today . And you'll find yourself playing a very enjoyable , approachable game , with a surprising depth of play . There's a lot of fun involved in capturing and developing your Poke-army , and a lot of strategy in deciding the best set of techniques to obtain and develop .
You'll have a good time . And if you're not careful , you may even find yourself negotiating Pokemon trades with your next-door neighbor's kids .

009 4 I'll have to admit , for the first , say , year and a half when this game was out , I so desperately tried to hate it . . . I didn't want to admit that I was into a little ' kiddie ' game . . . however , just this past year , so many of my peers have been playing the game ( and I go to Junior High too , I'm talking about 13 , 14 , 15 year olds playing this game ) . So , finally , I gave in , and for Christmas , I asked for a Game Boy Color and Pokemon Red . . . that was about all I got for Christmas due to the cost of those two expensive items , but it was definitely worth it . . .
This game is so . . . detailed . . . it's just unbelievable . It has a very easy learning curve , so after about half-an-hour I was cruising along with no problems at all . Catching your first Pokemon gives you a triumphant feeling , and beating your first trainer makes you feel like you're on top of the world , and you'll most likely find yourself screaming at the game , Oh yeah , who's the man ! That's right , that's what I thought ! ! ! Well , at least , that's what I did . . .
There are 150 Pokemon in this game ( actually , in the Japanese version , there are 151 ) , and it's a lot of fun trying to catch all of them . You can also keep track of all the Pokemon you've seen / caught with the Pokedex . Without this tool , the game would be much more frustrating .
I could really go on and on and on about this game , but there's a maximum of 1000 words , and unfortunately I think I've almost reached that limit . All I can say is , even if you don't have a Game Boy , or you're not even a fan of RPG's ( I'm still not a big fan of them ) , you owe it to yourself to pick up this game and give it a try . It's some of the most fun you'll ever have in the gaming world .

My kids and I all love the Pokemon Gameboys ( the three of us each have our own Gameboy ) . The red Pokemon game is very similar to the blue , with the Yellow having some slight differences .
I like the way the Pokemon game challenges kids . I suggest also buying one of the books which shows the various routes and places . This allows kids to work at the tasks without getting frustrated .
The idea is to start at Prof . Oak's house , get your first Pokemon from him , and then journey all around the land of Pokemon , collecting various wild pokemon ( which you catch by battling them until they faint ) , and doing battle with other trainers along the way .
In the process , kids learn to manuever through mazes of increasing complexity ( which is why the manuals are a help ) , to gather and use items , and to develop strategies for fighting various types of Pokemon . In this game , you play a ten year old boy on a quest to become a master of those all too familiar Pokémon . Some people make it their goal to raise their pokemon to level 100 , some just want to beat the elite four and some make it there goal to collect all 151 . But it is important that not one Pokemon can do it all , they all have strangths and weeknesses angainst other types unlike other rpg's where if you have a level 50 fighter you're all set . I'd recomend this game to anyone who likes any kind of RPG .

Pokemon starts off pretty fun but later it really annoys you . You have to pick between 3 Pokemon Bulbasuar , Charmander and Squirtle at the start . If you pick Charmander Gary picks the better one . Some pokemon you can't get in your version . I have 147 Pokemon . I have mew somehow because i surfed to get missingno who wreaks your game and found him . I think its a great game overall . P.S . Here's the deal : if you want strong , healthy , and high-level pokemon , ( which you definatly do ) you need to put in a humungous amount of time and effort into the game . I recomend Pokemon Red ( or any of the other versions ) to anyone who has the spare time . The best place for this game is on long travels or flights when you have way to much time and absolutly nothing to do .

I really liked this game because you get to realizing how a lot of the times you have to pay attention to the more subtle details . It is also really fun to raise your pokemon and get a bond with them ( In this game I started out with a Charmander and I have become so attached to it I coudn't let it go if someone offered me a Mew for it ! You also learn to respect your dream team . The only problem is that the cheat codes make it to easy to raise your pokemon incredibly high . There are some VERY , VERY , VERY tough mazes to navigate through . It's really fun when you start out . You must find your way without HMs . It's a very complicated , but awsome and sometimes even touching game .

The actual goal was as many Tootsie Roll wrappers we each got , that was how many Tootsie Rolls we would get . Anyway , I found a stray Ponyta Pokemon Card in one part of the yard , and my friend found a Dark Charmeleon . My friend said , I'll trade you my Dark Charmeleon for your Ponyta if you want . Well , personally , I didn't want to , I wanted to add this card and start a collection , but my friend's Dark Charmeleon did look sort of cool at the time . I finally gave in and said , well , why not ? So we traded . A few days later , we started acting out some of the episodes at recess ( I'd never seen the episodes at the time ) . My friend was basically making up his own little stories . . . never mind the episodes that were on TV . Later on , my liking for Pokemon grew when my friend decided to bring his Game Boy Color to school , AND his Pokemon Red Version . I thought to myself , hmmm . . . this could be interesting . I asked him what he was playing and if I could watch him play it . he said , sure you can watch . I didn't get to see much of the game because we weren't outside for recess that long . Then , I decided I wanted to get my own version of Pokemon Red . I asked my mom and she said I could . So I did . I got the game ( almost 7 years later and I still haven't beaten it ) and I ended up loving it . So , in conclusion , I'm eighteen and a half years old , a junior at Grafton High School , and I still love Pokemon ( the games more than the episodes ) , but one thing has changed . . . my friend and I don't do reenactments of our favorite episodes anymore like we used to . I really recommend this game .

027 4 The red version is my favorite game . I like this product because the game can be fun and because of the MissingNo . trick and because you can catch a lot of cool and powerful pokemon . I started out with a Charmander and boy does it rock ! Its like the powerfulest one in the game . It gets a little hard sometimes when you are battling a gym leader but you know you can defeat him / her . Pokemon red is the hottest one I ever played . My pokemon are Mewtwo , Gengar , MissingNo . , Golbat , Pidgeot , and I forgot the other one . There all at level 255 from the MissingNo . trick . Apperently , MissingNo . doesn't actually mess up your game . It only messes up the pokemon league hall of fame . Or it can sometimes mess up your graphics when you are using it .
Tip : Have strong and a variety types of pokemon .

Seriously , just because Pokemon has died down does not mean that you should stop liking it just because it's unpopular . Uhh . . . yeah . Well , anyway , this game is a classic . I still like it even after palying Ruby and Sapphire . Sometimes it's good to get back to the originals . Red and Blue are both pretty much the same but I personally like Red just because it has better Pokemon IMO ( Growlithe yeeaaaahhhhh ! ) But I like Blue too . They're both fun and have their share of glitches ( yay Missingno . ! If for some reason you don't know what Missingno . is then check out Pokemon glitches and you'll get a website that talks about pretty much any Pokemon glitch you can imagine ) , and even though the graphics are bad the heart of the game is there . There is one major fault , though : there isn't much to do after you catch Mewtwo . The later games hav improved this greatly , so if you're one of those people who likes to keep a game forever I would suggest Pokemon Emeral .
This game's replay value is great as well ; you can play three different games and get three diferent starters and three different Eevee evolutions . Well there is another major flaw and that is that you can only have one game going at the same time . This is not improved even in the later games and I do not know why .

This is one of the best games i have payed in a very long time ! I also have a playstation and quite a few games but when i got pokemon red , i couldent ( and still cant ) put it down ! Thats the longest break my playstations ever had ! This game has unlimited replay value , because once you beat the game , you can keep playing , collecting pokemon , and raising there levels . In October 1998 , my grandmother bought me a little known game called Pokemon . My Japanese friend told me of it , and it was one of the few RPGs for Game Boy that I didn't have and beat . Soon , I was addicted . Fight , catch , fight , catch , and fight and catch some more . So simple ! But therein lies the game's appeal . I put 60 + hours into this little thing ! I have now caught all 150 Pokemon , and my tops are Raichu , Charizard , Dugtrio , Nidoking , Fearow , and Raticate . Soon after this occurred , the TV show started , and the franchise was being milked like a cow on hormones . The game I thought was so cool was now being dished upon because of marketing to younger audiences . Older gamers , give this game a chance , and you may be surprised !

I used to put Pokemon in the same catagory as other virtual pets . Ten I played it for the first time and haven't put it down since . The game is addictive . No matter what your age , it's thrilling when you catch your first pokemon . I found myself beaming all day when I got some of the tougher ones . Whether you're ten or thirty this game is great .

because this is on Gameboy ( before Color ) the graphics are dull , plain , boring . However after getting past that you have a very deep , very fun , and very addicting game . Catching 151 of the creatures ( 151 through either gameshark or Pokemon Conventions ) and in these cases it is a little difficult to put the game down .
Overall the game is worth playing because it is a lot of fun , forget the [ stuff ] that it spawned and play the first game , if you are an RPG Fan you will not be disapointed .

With an innovative design with a sprawling world that should take you a month to complete and even fun side things , this game is it . If you can , battle and trade with a friend . The game is extremely portable and with a story line that is easy for everyone to understand , but deep enough to hook the experienced players , this is a must buy . My only gripe is one that the battles tend to get tedious if you are overmatched in combat . About the middle of the game , the battles seem pointless and almost boring . But you have to make it through to raise your pokemon to a higher level for later in the game . other than that , a very lovable and worthwhile game !

This game is the original Red version NOT the super hyped up FireRed version for the gameboy advance . Basicly your a boy named Ash Ketchem ( you can give him any name you like ) trying to become the world's greatest pokemon master ! ! I recommned charmander because he's a big challange compared to picking Bulbasaur or Squirtal . Once you catch all 150 pokemon you get a diploma for compleating it . You also choose your Rival's Name , which in the show is Gary . When you start out , you have a choice of 3 pokemon . One is fire type , one is water and one is grass . After you choose your pokemon , your rival will choose a pokemon that is strong against your element . Right after you choose you will have to battle your rival . He doesn't have an elemental advantage yet , because his pokemon know no elemental attacks . Through the game you will encounter your rival and have battles . But the game isn't only about your rivalry . In fact , this is only a little thing to make the game more exciting .
After you choose your pokemon , you will travel through towns , caves , dungeons , fields , forests , capturing pokemon and battling trainers . The more battles you have the stronger your pokemon will become .
At most major towns , there will be a pokemon gym . There will be a gym leader that you have to battle . If you defeat the gym leader , you will get a pokemon badge and a strong TM . TM's are attacks that you can teach your pokemon .
Also , there are pokemon center's and Markets . You can heal your pokemon in pokemon centers , and you can buy item's that you will need on your adventure at Markets .
When you have defeated all the gym leaders and you feel that you are strong enough , you can battle the Elite Four . If you defeat them , you will battle the current Champion . Finally , if you beat him , the credits will role and you'll think you beat the game . Wait for the credits to finish , turn of the gameboy . When you turn it back on , you'll be back at Pallet Town . If you have never seen the show or heard anything about this game , you may be stuck . Go to Cerulean City , and find your way to the Unknown Dungeons . Hint ( you will have to surf to get to them ) . If you have defeated the Elite Four , the man standing there should be gone . You'll find yourself in a Dungeon that holds very high level pokemon . If you search through the dungeon long enough , you'll find something very important . I don't want to give anything away though : ) .
Over all , this game will keep a younger kid playing it for a long time , especially with the goal to catch all 151 pokemon . You can't catch them all in just Pokemon Red or Blue , you'll have to trade pokemon with a friend to do it .
The graphics are pretty good for gameboy , although the battle scenes are terribly pixelated .
The music is pretty good , some tunes will stick in your head for a long time .

Pokemon Red kept me busy . I'm the kind of person who likes to figure out things things so I think this is a great game . You get to figure out where you leave a town , what happened to pokemon or people and where the one very rare pokemon is . You get to go over water , fly to previous cities , use a bike or just plain walk . When your pokemon change , it's so exiting because you never know what they'll be able to do next . This game deserves 5 stars !

The premise of Pokemon - to collect and train pokemon - was the perfect fertile growing field to exploit this fascination children had with collecting things . When that became popular enough , the creators rendered the full 150 Pokemon into thousands of different incarnations . This was my first EVER gameboy game . I turned it on on one day and couldn't put it down for hours and hours . Some people think that it is childish and dumb , but I can assure you that it is a great game that is fun to play . I don't have e-mail , which is why I am using the kid review form , but I am really 17 . I can reccomend this game to anyone . Even my 81 - year-old grandmother loved it . If you don't think that you can play games like this , you are wrong . This is one of the best games that I have ever played . I have tried the gold version and the Ruby and all of those other games , but I always go back to the original . The first 150 pokemon are the absolute best .

I didn't buy it but I knew it would be good so I borrowed it from a friend . I only played for like 2 hours but I did so much . In that amount of time I had gotten half way through Mt . Moon and beat every trainer I fought . I caught 6 Pokemon and that's pretty good for a beginner . I chose Squirtle in the beginning even though I knew Bulbasaur was best for the Gym Leaders . Squirtle is also really good against Brock . I beat all his Pokemon in 3 moves . Squirtle is good because he doesn't have a weakness to any of the other guys you could have picked so you wouldn't have a weakness to Gary . Well that's all I have to say on the subject .

Pokemon Red is a great game . I wouldnt recemend giving it to some1 who dosnt read well though . You also have to get a little help from the Red and Yellow to beat the game . I dont think I need to explain about how the game goes in general . ( youve probobly read all the other reviews ) . Theres a cheat so you can get level 100 pokemon or infinity Master Balls but it totaly messes up ur game . All of my friends have Pokemon Red and I think that you or whoever you are thinking of buying this for will enjoy this as much as I did .

I first thought pokemon was uncool untill i traded for this game . I played it first starting with charmander and got stuck and could do nothing and got bored and didn't play it for a year or so . When I picked it up again . I haven't put it down . I have beat the elite four and have 67 pokemon . I am still interested . I have taken this on many long trips . Its good for that but in the car it might make you car sick . I think this game is the only pokemon thing you need . The toys are pointless . 123 4 Pokemon RED , BLUE , and YELLOW versions are definately better than all of the newer versions . Red is my favorite . It's really not any different than Blue and Yellow . Except on Yellow you start out with PIKACHU . This game is all about catching and fighting using your little monsters . Proffessor Oak gives you the choice between Charmander , Squirtle , and Bulbasaur . Charmander is my favorite . He is also the strongest . Especially after he evolves into Charizard ( who is so powerful that even water type Pokemon can barely stop him ) . Squirtle is probably the weakest of the three . It's final form Blastoise is pretty strong for a water type however . Bulbasaur is the most popular .
Most people pick him because of his final form Venasaur ( who could get knocked out with one attack of Charizard's Fire Spin attack ) . I picked Charmander and he is level one hundred . Of course he is Charizard now . I have all three legendary birds . Moltres , Zapdos , and Articuno . The best team is Charizard , Moltres , Zapdos , Articuno , Mewtwo , and Gyarados . I have all of thes Pokemon level one hundred . Here's a little secret to get unlimited Rare candy and Master Balls . Put the item you want to copy in the sixth item spot then talk to the guy in Viridian city who says Ah I had my coffee and I feel great then watch him catch Weedle or whatever else it is then fly to Fushia city surf down to the Seafoam islands and surf up and down the side where the land touches the water . When MISSINGNO appears run away and you will have unlimited Rare candies or Master balls . Well I hope my review was helpful .

Several months ago I thought that the Pokemon game and telivision series was a complete waste of time . Then , my five year old brother bought the Pokemon Red Gameboy Game . I picked the game up and immediately started to enjoy myself . You will have great fun experimenting with different types of Pokemon . I thought it was very interesting working with Pokemon of different types , such as fire , water , etc . I disagree with a previous review stating that the game will get boring . The game will only get boring if you experiment with the Gameshark features of the game , it will lose its fun . The game is not about having these electronic creatures as your friends , it is about showing them off to your friends , impressing them with your training ability using the link cable . In this sense you can continually replay the game using different types of Pokemon , finding out which you like best . In this sense the game never gets boring and old . It is a fabulous game .

I bought this game primarily to find out what all the hype was about . I must admit its a pretty good game . But when it comes down to it its really nothing more than an RPG game aimed at smaller children . Instead of having your party of 4 or 5 adventurers going off to save the world you play Ash a Pokemon Trainer who uses up to 6 different Pokemon at any one point in order to save the world . In this way its just like any RPG I've ever played . The only problem I have with it as an RPG is that it seems awfully one dimensional . Maybe I haven't gotten far enough but as of right now it forces me to go each way . Maybe that makes it easier for children though since they aren't presented with as many choices . However I still found it quite addictive . I think the collecting part of it makes it interesting even though I know I will never collect all of the Pokemon . What I really want to do right now is just beat it once through , and so I've given up on collecting for now . Overall this is an excellent game and definitely worth some of the hype if for no other reason than its the first RPG successfully targeted at younger children .

Pokemon red is a really awesome game . The variety of monsters you can have is wonderful , and the game reaaaly teaches you how to ration , and plan . For instance , you have to time your moves exactly when you are in the Safari Zone . I think it's great that your Pokemon don't die ; it teaches children not everything dies , and you always have a chance to try again , with a minimal loss . There's reading involved too , which is always a plus , and it brings kids together when trading time comes ! All in all , a great , verrry fun game ! Charizard Rules !

Pokemon Red is a very enjoyable game . When I got it for my son , I found him spending a lot of time on his Game-Boy . I decided to try it myself . You take on the role of Ash , a ten year old boy who dreams of being a Pokemon master . Pokemon are creatures with many special powers . Some types are common , like Pidgey and Rattata . Others are very rare like Moltres and Zapdos . And yes , Pikachu is one of stronger Pokemon in the game . To become a Pokemon master you must defeat 8 gym-leaders . People are insulting this game for no reason except for its childish hype , and believe me this game is not as childish as expected . To beat the game takes more work then necessary . Not to spoil anything but you must fight as many people as posible to be able to last . The game itself is very good for GB standards . On 02 / 14 / 1998 , I recieved a game that ultimately became an obsession for me . I played this game whereever and whenever possible . I have caught all 151 of the original characters and kept on playing anyway . The game , it seems , never ends . I have about 215 hours on my file , and not once did it get boring . The Pokemon Era may have died down , but Red is still a great game . As the 10th anniversary of its American release rolls around , I can see the revival of a classic on the horizon .

everyone loves this game , i mean come on . but one of my biggest problems is the fact that you can't catch all the pokemon by yourself , you have to trade with others . to me , this seems unneccesary and annoying and it only makes it so i will never catch all the pokemon .

I think that Pokemon Red is really fun . Raising the pokemon can sometimes be really tough , but in the end they eventually get stronger . I recommend this game for other people who don't have Pokemon Red and is thinking of buying it . Pokemon Blue is terrific , too !

I think this is a great game for everyone . You can play endlessly with your Pokemon and it's always a challenge . There is more to consider than just chosing which Pokemon to fight . They all have weaknesses so you have to have more than just one . It is also a challenge to train your Pokemon . And there's always fun in playing versus your friends with the cable hook up . I reccomend this to anyone at all . It's especially good to get it for long car rides or plane trips .

When I heard about Pokemon I thougth it was going to be another cheap thing from Nintendo , but I started to see the animated cartoon Pokemon on UPN ( Now WB ) and I loved it I think it is one of best games ever.It was hard , you had to think , exiting and most it was fun capturing all the Pokemon , but some cases you had get the Pokemon from a different color version only has 11 different Pokemon.It took about three times to start all over because I had messtup buy fainting a pokemon that only comes out onece in the whole game.Another time I messtup by geeting a tought Pokemon to raise at the begining of the game ( Charmander ) . This is one Nintendos best next to Zelda and Mario .

I wasn't sure at first , but this game got me hooked on the Pokemon craze , even though I'm 19 and at university ! I just love having to collect and train all the different Pokemon , and try and become the world's best trainer of Pokemon . I was into it before it became popular , and I still enjoy the games ( not the cards . . . . . . ) more than 2 years after the fad breathed it's last . Yes , new titles have been coming out , but no one seems to like them very much and they are not changing the game enough to make them worth buying .
Anyway , about the game . You start out as a young boy living with your mother , and set out to become the world's greatest Pokemon trainer . When you try to leave town , Professer Oak will give you a starter Pokemon ( the only real difference between this one and Yellow is that in Yellow , you MUST start with Pikachu ) . Once you have picked one , you must battle your rival , and then you can leave . The rest is obvious . . .
The main reason I still like this game is that it has amazing , Zelda-esque depth to it . Many puzzles , and 15 element types of Pokemon . Certain types are stronger against others , while each type has its weaknesses , too . There are a total of 150 Pokemon to be caught . However , some only appear in the Red version and some only in Blue . You must link to the Blue version to catch all 150 ! ( To make this easier , some people buy a Red AND Blue AND a Game Link Cable so they could complete the game on their own ) .
Overall , this game is surprisingly fun and amusing , and has a great depth to it which will please many RPG ( role-playing game ) lovers . Great game , so if you like RPGs or adventure games , get this one , if you don't already have it .

I am the sister of a boy who has caught the severe illness of Pokemon fever.Pokemon are not even on my list of things to check out.Surprisingly enough the 2 Pokemon games are great.It has enough action to keep you interested , but at the same time a lot of thinking involved to do battels , capture pokemon , earn badges , and even make some poke money.As I said before I am not very fond of pokemon , but this game is worth checking out .

This game was a good start for the Pokemon franchise but to strictly say . Very straight forward game and not very difficult . In my opinon this is the kinda game you would play in your free time or for old times sake . The controls are identical to Blue and Yellow and gameplay is simple .

This game is really fun and I prefer it over blue version because it has better pokemon in it . The best part about red and blue version is all the cool gliches it has ! The gliches are really fun to play around with . Who said crashing your game wasn't fun ? Anyway , for 10 $ this is a really good game , and even though fire red and leaf green are out , who can really live without gliches and the graphics , in all of it's pixelated glory . This game may be old but it's a pretty good game . I don't know all the new pokemon ( or hardly any ) so this game is great for me . The animation is not to great but hey-it's a gameboy game ! It has very intresting music that gets annoying when you turn it on but i just turn it off . I say the music and the looks of people are the only bad things .

I have to be honest and say that I am beginning to loathe the pokemon fad emensely . Nothing will make me happier than when that little yellow rat goes the way of pogs . However my hate of all things pokemon was not always so . I actually bought this game around a month before the huge pokemon phenomena really picked up , so at that time i was not sick of it ( I actually hadn't really heard that much about it ) . When i first played the game it was fun , the idea of inslaving little cute beasties , and then making them pit-fight was very appealing . I played pokemon a lot for the next few weeks and developed quite a neck strain in doing so . However as I began to get further into the plot and discovered that there was none . Basicly the plot revolves around going from town to town earning badges and getting items , and fighting the absurd antagonists known as team rocket . Also to cramp the game was the huge repetiveness . I really disliked that there were very few enemy trainer sprites and it seemed like you were always fighting the same type of stuff . So as soon as I got to the sixth badge my intrest just petered out and I stopped playing . By that time i ahd begun to turn sour to the whole pokemon thing anyway . I suppose that the reason this is so popular among newbie RPGers is that it requirers little skill , and falls back on repetiveness .

Having only owned Red and not Blue , I can't fairly compare them . However , the only difference is the Pokémon you can obtain , and in that both seem equal . Comparing Red / Blue is different . Yellow tries so hard to match up with the anime , yet comes up sickeningly short . It adds a poor plot where there should be no plot , at the expense of gameplay . Red / Blue are superior .
The puzzles and dungeons of the chromatics ( Red / Blue / Yellow ) are difficult , far more so than those of the metallics ( Gold / Silver / Crystal ) and the gems ( Ruby / Sapphire ) . However , the final bosses are lacking compared to the Gems ' . The Gems also have some decent plot . I would say that the gems and chromatics are equal , and the metallics are lacking . However , only buy the chromatics ( which are incompatible with the gems ) if you've exhausted the gems . Still , it's a better choice than the metallics .

The gameplay and sound is reat as well . If you love this game but want better graphics or more stuff to do , then buy FireRed or LeafGreen Version ! They are just as fun ! when i first got this game , i was addicted to it . but that was about a year ago . after playing with it for about a year i started to realize what a bad game it was . it is slow , and there is no excitement .
237 4 Out of all my friends , I must have been the last kid to get this game . I was not regretting it when I asked for it and got it for Christmas , because this game was so cool at first . On Christmas day of 1998 , I must have played this game all day . In three days , I had all eight badges , and enough to take on the Elite Four . It took me a little while to beat them , I did . And that's when I got sick of the game . The thing is , after you beat the Elite Four , what you have is a group of superpowerful Pokemon that can only fight wild Pokemon , and you need to catch the rest of the Pokemon . The game becomes a big nothing . It's fun to raise low level Pokemon if you still have trainers you haven't fought , but besides that , it's a pretty big nothing . All you can really do is fight wild Pokemon , walk around , get lost ( Which is hard because the game's map is too easy to figure out ) , and go shopping for items you probably won't need . I have never gotten all 151 Pokemon , because it gets so boring at around 120 that I can't stand it . The game is fun if you use cheats like starting off with Mew and multiplying items , but besides that , it's pretty boring . I'd say to buy it , but the fad is over now , and nobody cares . Playing Pokemon these days makes you an outcast . Only buy this if you're not afraid of ruining whatever reputation you have .

Its not nearly as good as I thought it would be . It is an easy game with tons of tedious repitition . It was fun for the first hour , you spend most of your time in tedious battles . It has a crumby storyline , and isnt nearly as good as Zelda 64 . This game shouldnt be considered an RPG , because its the worst one I've played .
