Onimusha Warlords

  • 006 4  Onimusha is by no means a perfect game . But after a set of disappointing PS2 launch titles , Onimusha is definitely a big step in the right direction . The general gameplay mechanics are derived from Capcom's Resident Evil series and are fairly basic . You navigate your character through various environments killing demons and solving the occasion puzzle . The focus of the game is clearly more on action as demons are constantly materializing around you . The fighting mechanics are definitely not as advanced as a pure fighting game . However , there are a variety of weapons , abilities , and enemies which keeps combat from becoming stale . However , the visuals and the atmosphere are where the game really excels . Onimusha employs 3D characters on a 2D background . This allows the backgrounds to be incredibly rich and detailed . This also allows the characters to be incredibly detailed as well . A lot of emphasis clearly was spent on modelling and animating facial features . As a result , Onimusha is the first game I've ever played where the in-game characters look realistically human . The story is driven along by both real-time and prerendered cutscenes . The real-time cutscenes are the best to-date . The stunning level of facial animation allows the models to actually display emotions realistically . The prerendered cutscenes are also top-notch and on a par with anything that Final Fantasy has offered . The cutscenes and the atmosphere of the game really give the impression that you are experiencing an interactive movie . However , this movie analogy extends to the length of the game as well . While long for a movie , the game is very short by videogame standards . I was able to complete the game in just over 3 hours of game time . There are a few missed items and secrets to unlock , so i will likely play through the game again , but regardless , the game is quite brief . Also , I found myself very disappointed by the ending . I won't reveal any spoilers , but the general impression is that I felt the ending was very abrupt and didn't really close off the story very well . The amount of detail and effort spent setting up the story and atmosphere were oddly contradicted by the sudden end of the game . Despite that , Onimusha is a thoroughly enjoyable experience . Action-packed , stunning visuals , immersive atmosphere . Definitely a good sign of things to come .
    • 020 4  Quite simply one of the most visually stunning games I've ever seen , Onimusha : Warlords also has the distinction of being the most enjoyable games I've played for the PS2 . The game is developed by the same people who made the Resident Evil games , and it employs a very similar gaming style . The controller layout is the same , as is the inventory system . The gameplay , however , has been slightly altered . The action is similar , but there is a lot more of it . Accordingly , the puzzles have been stripped down . The biggest change , though , is with the weapons . Instead of killing zombies with guns , you get to kill them with swords . This might not sound like a big deal , but when the enemy is out of camera range , it's much easier to connect with a swing of a sword than with a bullet . Having enemies out of camera range is something that happens surprisingly often in this game , due to the pre-rendered backgrounds and set camera angles . Though , in their defense , those backgrounds are absolutely some of the most stunnig backgrounds in video games . Also , using pre-rendered backgrounds frees up polygons , all of which go into the most detailed characters I've ever seen . While you're playing , it looks like a real person battling real demons in a real feudal Japan . Absolutely stunning . Onimusha : Warlords is an outstanding game , from the gameplay to the graphics , and I can't wait to see what they do with the sequel .
    • 041 4  I bought Onimusha when it first came out and let me say its one of my favorite ps2 games . It is relatively short but the story is quite good . The graphics kick butt and the game is quite gory . The opening movie is one of the best I've seen and for once it does not glorify Japan's samurai by showing everyone doing martial arts . It shows how desperate battles were in those days . Capcom did a great job on this game and I look forward to the sequel . If you've got the money and are looking for a good game consider this one .
    • 054 4  PS2 ' s first survival horror game was put out by Capcom , maker of the Resident Evil series . So , not surpisingly , this game is very much like the Resident Evil games , but with some good and bad changes . The controls are better , particularly during battle . Instead of being limited to rotating back and forth while attacking , the characters can jump back quickly and dodge from side to side . Also , you can and must learn to block enemy attacks , which is not possible against the Resident Evil zombies . This makes the battles more fun and interesting . The problem is that the stonger enemies are very slow and fairly easy to beat once you've mastered the controls . There's also not a lot of required backtracking for items , which can get very annoying in the Resident Evil games . On the other hand , it makes this game a bit too straightforward and easy in some ways . The number of items needed is not very high , and puzzles are less frequent and very easy , with the exception of two that are little more than guessing games . Finally , don't expect the length of the typical Resident Evil game . This is a pretty short game . The story and dialogue don't have much to offer either . The game is great graphically and a lot of fun to play . Camera angles are much improved and the game flows very well . Good first effort , with hopes for an improved sequel ( a trailer is available after the game is completed ) . A must have for any survival horror fan .
    • 096 4  When i slept over my friends and we borrowed this game it was just fantastic ! the graphics are awasome . The enemys are cool . The puzzels can be pretty hard sometimes . This game is very addictive . The swords are very cool . And people say it is to short it isn't we havn't betting it yet but it is not short . The game is at a normal scary type game . But not like code vernica now thats scary . So i really reccomend this game to PS2 gamers !
    • 121 4  Great game , great graphics , lots of demons to slash . Two problems : 1 - you can't skip the cinema sequences ( this is a real pain when you are Died and have to retrace your path ) and 2 - I can't believe they didn't use the analog stick for primary movement control ! What were the programmers thinking ? ! So instead of natural fluid movements around the game you get this herky , jerky walk'n into walls movement . I also found it very hard to control during battles with the tougher enemies . The last little anoyance I had was they show the main character rolling out of the way to avoid an attack during a cut sequence but when you are actually playing the game you don't get to roll . Anyhoo enough babling . The game is very fun if you like to kill , kill , kill . I especially love stepping on the demon to pull the sword free after you've run it through them , lovely .
    • 125 4  Let's face it , Capcom has made a name for themselves with games like this ( surival horror ) . From the Resident Evil series to Dino Crisis to Onimusha : Warlords ( I'm sure I am leaving out others ) , they seem to know what they are doing . I liked playing this game , once . After that , it's really hard to get back into . But because I played it once and not again , doesn't make it a bad game . It's just you reach a point where in the game industry that once you played it , it's time to move on to the next game . If you are like me and other obligations have to be met ( work , school , social life , every day chores ) then you are limited for play time . If I had more time , I would love to explore more of Onimusha because it's a real nicely made game . Most of the times though , I would love to just pop in a quick game ( like Tekken Tag , DOA2 or Midnight Club ) and play for bit . But as for my rating , I had a hard time deciding , then I thought of the games out there for PS2 . There are not many games and this is one of the better ones . So , if you want a hack and slash Resident Evil , then this is for you . Great graphics ! ! ! Great sound ! ! Easy controls . . . What more can I say . Not much of a PS2 library , so this one shines at the top .
    • 149 4  This is a very fun game with fantastic graphics somewhat in the mold of Resident Evil meets Tenchu . While more action oriented and not as many puzzles than the Resident Evil / Dino Crisis , the controls are very similar ( as are those same annoying camera angles ) . The graphics are excellent and there are new neat features such as having the option to listen to the voice overs in Japanese with English subtitles at the bottom . Its just like watch Chairman Kaga from Iron Chef ! If you are a fan of the Resident Evil series or even Tenchu , you should buy this game .

  • 007 4  This is a good game , and graphiclly it is pretty amazing . The hero looks too western to be a samurai though . Yes it is a resident evil clone . And for that it is a little sad . Capcom are showing that they have the talent to do excellent games . But they are having a tendency to do the same style of survival horror . The graphics are great , but the characters are weak overall . Just that little bit two dimentional . But hopefully that will improve with an Onimusha II . I don't like the distances between some save points and I don't like the way you can't skip movies . There are 3 trap / puzzel rooms in a row in one area and you have to view the movie each time . The monsters go from being very cool , to just average and that is a bit of a pity . I would have liked to have seen more ninja based villans . The samurai villains are easy but cool . I would have liked to have been able to play the girl ninja . She for most of the game takes a different route and that would have added alot to the lasting appeal . The extra costumes are cool , although I was told there is a panda bear costume or something similar . Capcom for god's sake why ? Give us another interesting costume rather than something just ridiculas . I bought the game I am happy I bought it . It is worth buying and the PS2 has already had some nice Japanese samurai games . They are rapidly becoming my favourite type of game . I hope to see more of these cinematic style games .
    • 036 4  This action adventure game is surely not to disappoint . When I first bought the game and started playing things picked up slow and my first impression was that the game was just mediocre . But things changed slowly and as I progressed through the game it just got better and better and better and better until finally I said to myself THIS GAME ROCKS ! This is how all games should be made where they go from okay to awesome instead getting off to a good start and dying out towards the end like many other games do . I give this game my highest recommendation . Definitely worth the purchase . Another gem from Capcom . Thank You for such a fine game
    • 106 4  Capcom , creators of the awfully cliché Resident Evil series , time travel to the ages of Feudal Japan , and surprisingly enough , their undead creatures have a special magic to them . As anyone who knows me ought to know , I despise the whole Resident Evil Phenomenon , with perhaps the sole exception of Resident Evil 1 . But I know a good game when I see one , and certainly this is one of them , despite the fact of being a short one . Even though the story line is , in NO WAY 100% original , it still makes up for a decent game : You take the role of Smanuske , a Samurai in the hunt of princess Yuki who has been kidnapped by The Demons to be offered as a sacrifice during a ceremony that will seal the pact between the Demons and the filthy humans . Sounds way to damn linear , right ? And of course it is , but linear story line is masterfully contrasted with an addicting gaming experience , plus a macabre medical look at the demons ' doing , a trick that works marvels in comparison to the cliché crazy scientists of Resident Evil . A fine game for the PS2 and highly recommended , go for it !
    • 133 4  Thats is what i think most people will be saying after playing this game . Capcom has done it again ! Bringing us another game in which you can get into the main character and want to pay attention to the storyline . Its true this is another Resident Evil style game , just like Dino Crisis , but i personally love this style game . The graphics are incredible . The opening movie will stun you and make it appear you can just touch the characters . The game of course starts off slow but soon really picks up . The only part I dont like is the length of the game and well the bosses seem to be a little to easy , but this game in my opinion is definatly worth the money . If you are a fan of Resident evil style games . . . . . . . . this is a must have ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
    • 136 4  I was really looking forward to Onimusha and i can say that I was a little disappointed . I wasnt disappointed at its graphics though . The movies and graphics are AWESOME ! ! What I am disappointed at is the gameplay and the storyline . I am a fan of survival horror games and I can say that this game IS NOT SCARY ! ! I never got scared even once . So , basically i'm giving it 3 stars because of the graphics and the movies .

  • 034 4  This is a fairly fun adventure / RPG game , and defenatly worth the [ $ $ $ ] that it costs . I haven't played throught the entire game , so I don't know then entire story , but I was impressed with what I saw . The graphics are top of the line , and what someone should expect from a game on one of the current consoles . The game plays through smoothly and can get you hooked if you give it a chance . The game can do voices in either Japanese or English , with subtitles in either language as well . However the graphics only match the Japanese language so playing with English voices doesn't work right . I usually play with Japanese voices and English text . The only problem I have with the gameplay controls is that the foward and back buttons are relative to how the character is facing at the time . So if the character is facing the bottom of the scree , up moves you down and down moves you up . Right and left turn to the characters right or left , so it can take some time to get used to , and the game is unplayable until you do . I would have prefered the controls were fixed , so up is always up , etc , but oh well . Unless you are a really big fan of this genre of games , then you should probably rent or borrow first if possible , though [ $ $ $ ] isn't a huge risk for a game .
    • 013 4  What's not to like ? Easy controls , fun story ( though a bit cliched ) , beautiful graphics , puzzles , loads of stuff to trash , the list goes on and on . My one complaint is that game is rather short . If you are at all familiar with these type of games , it won't take long to get to the end . Re-play value is moderate ; I haven't yet gotten tired of the thunder attack . ( . . . )
    • 015 4  Omnimusha Warlords was the first game I had for my PS2 and when I saw the opening CG movie I was sitting on the edge of my seat , The game follows a young samurai named Samonoske who starts out from the very start of the game on a mission to save the princess from harm . But he gets more than he expects when he finds himself faced against an entire legion of demons who wish to rule the world . . . . . In the game there are some points where you will switch between Samonoske and his female ninja freind to advance in the game which makes it even better . But I really wish people would stop comparing this game to Resident Evil the only thing they hve in common is that they both put you against unhuman enemies and that they both let you switch between a male or a female charecter , But besides that everything in Omnimusha is different the grapics are superb , the controls are so smoothe , and you get to suck your enemies soul to your hand after you kill them ( isnt nearly as gruesom as it sounds ) The only two flaws are that some of dialouge doesnt match with the mouth movement , and that it is a bit short for a cinematic game , but besides that Omnimusha Warlords is a great game that is worth buying ! .
    • 035 4  You will never get tired of playing this game . The storyline is excellent . You are a samurai on a rampage to save a princess . However you are not powerful enough to battle monsters . You receive an orb from ancient gods which allows you to battle monsters and take their souls . The fighting is awesome . I especially liked the option of stabbing a monster right in the chest once you have knocked it to the ground . You also have the option of fighting one on one battles with some powerful monsters . It is fun going up against some large opponents . There are great improvements with Onimusha 2 , however you should have this one in your colection .
    • 043 4  this game is ok . . . well , very good in concept and design . . but it has a major flaw . background isn't 3D ! ! as a consumer , i don't care whether it was designed originally for PS1 . . . if it was , then , they should release it as PS1 game and take some time to re-develop it . and , since back ground isn't 3D , the control of charactor . . especially in fighting isn't so smooth . . I would give it 5 Stars , if it weren't for that 2D back ground . . . that's a shame . . .
    • 086 4  The only flaw I see in this game is that it is too short , but never the less it stays exiting and entertaining all the way thourgh . The graphics are awsome . . . . If you don't like violent video games then stay clear . On the fight sceens be sure to turn this up at full blast for full effect .
    • 115 4  Onimusha is my favorite PS2 game out now . This game is the kind of game where you cant get up . The place where you can save is always far from Samanosuke ( your character ) . Then when you save you still dont want to stop . I got grounded because I didnt want to get up and refused to leave when my mom told me too . This games graphics is great . I loved the game and the end was really cool but then I was disapointed with something at the end but I will let you get the game and figure it out . . . . and this game is definitally worth it .
    • 119 4  This game blew my mind right from the opening credits , it's almost worth playing just for that . The graphics are stunning and the gameplay is excellent . There's only one reason why this game should not be purchased by some people . . . length . The game time required to completely finish this game is about 4 hours , mind you it will take you a bit longer then that , if you don't know that's really short ( hopefully the second version of this game will be longer ) . Besides that minor / major flaw ( depending on how you look at it ) this is one of the best games I have played thus far for the PS2 .
    • 140 4  Onimusha displays some of the best graphics on the PS2 to date . The opening cinema is simply amazing and the in game graphics aren't to shabby either . As far as the gameplay goes I never thought it could be so much fun to kill demons as it is in this game . There is a pretty good variety of weapons to choose from as you progress through the game which keeps things from getting boring . The only areas this title falls short in are its length ( about five or six hours the first time through ) and its cliche story line ( save the princess ) . If your a fan of the Resident Evil Series or even Tenchu this is definetly a must buy !

  • 056 4  By now you've heard the Resident Evil with swords description and that pretty much somes it up . Onimusha doesn't break much new ground and is a little lighter on the story than other survival horror games but it's a blast to play none the less . You do a lot less running back and forth looking for items and a lot more fighting , mainly due to the re-spawning or enemies . The controls will be almost second hand to anyone who's played any of the Resident Evil games and newcomers shouldn't have too much of a problem either . The graphics and music are both top notch , though the english voice overs could of been better . It's actually better to turn on the Japanesse dialogue with English subtitles because it fits the game a little better . All in all a good first showing , definately worth buying , but next time around Capcom needs to take things to the next level .
    • 090 4  Onimusha warlords is a fantastic game . The graphics are better than most games youll ever see . The gameplay is a little similar to the resident evil series yes but who could ever get tired of hacking the most realistic looking zombies to pieces ? Youll be having nightmares for weeks after this one .
    • 109 4  The game itself is alright but it has too many flaws to make it anygood . First of all the controls are just plain bad and the graphics aren't great either . You also can't skip automated scenes you've already seen and the storyline is nothing special . The battle system I have to admit was alright but as the for the rest of the game . . . Anyway , if you're interested in the game go out and rent it before you think of buying it .
    • 127 4  kudos to the graphics people but the story line was a little hard to follow . the dubbing is just about the worst i had ever heard on any game , resident evil was bad but at least it was correct , gramaticly . . . err most of the time . as far as game play it takes resident evil and makes some improvements . the crapy magic box that you can access items from is gone and the inventory is much more streamline . still dont know why they cant make a game that you can save at any place , take a hint from PC games please . i still have to beat it because it switches character mid game but the monsters are much harder while the alternate character cant do jack . a definate balance problem . i have no mem card but so far i havent needed one . this game is fun but i sorta wished i didnt spend 50 bucks for it
    • 144 4  This game started in the right diretion . The graphis are great , gameplay is great , hell i could've kept playing just to take souls . One thing it lacked greatly , however , is difficulty . This game was way too easy , and only took me five hrs to beat . Needless to say i took this one back after beating it , and invested in a sports game .

  • 080 4  One day on the first month of February I picked up a game called Onimusha Warlords . I didnt think much of the game but since the game's background took place in Japan i decided to get it because I was japanese to . I thought this game was going to be one of those games u got because u had a certain connection to the game and I thought I was going to sell it back to the store anyways and it was only 18 dollars . When i came back from the store to my friends house and I put the disc in his Playstation . Boy I was damn wrong . I am not even going to waste my time and screw it up for all the gamers who havent played this special game yet , but I can tell everybody that this was the most fun I have had with my Playstation 2 in a while since Vice came out . I beat this game 5 times in a week and a half so u can expect that this game is short . I hope you have had as much fun as I had playing this game .
    • 010 4  Capcom has one again show that they are the best . Onimusha is above all standards.Has graphics that will make you think you are part of it.The storyline has being used in many other games such as zelda but the way this story tries to express itself it makes it seem like another story . I really think this game is worth playing . The games biggest drawback , which isnt that big but still maybe onimusha 2 improves it , Its the length you can finish the game with in 4 - 5 hours but the game is worth playing .

  • 099 4  i L O V E video games , and really wish that more of them got me as excited as the ads for the games seem too . This game had its moments , and it was the first game I played on PS2 ( came with the system where I got mine ) . I was blown away initially - especially with the opening movie etc . . . but very soon thereafter had a real de-ja-vue feeling about the game . The still camera and akward pauses as you move from one screen to the next , and the VERY annoying enemy just off the screen where you can't see or attack has gotten way to old . Ultimately I think the game just isn't dynamic enough to keep my interest . BTW to give you perspective , my all time favorite video game is Tomb Raider - the original . It was unique , exciting , I actually jumped outta my seat when that first Tyrannosaurus came at me ( you remember don't you ! ) and the puzzles were hard enough to keep my interest but not so crazy hard you needed a $20.00 strategy guide to finish it . Onimusha lacks that innovation . Rent it if you love the Res Evil thing , otherwise . . . save your dough and wait .
    • 072 4  now at first i was very critical with buying this game . . . my brother actually bought it because i really didnt want no stupid samurai game . . . but then we started to play it . . at first i was very happy with the graphics . . . to b such a good game and have good graphics was pretty koo . . well then i was shocked with the gameplay it is so easy to control . . all the music and sound effects were perfect for this game . . . . now the only thing i didnt like VERY much was that this game you can call it a soul reaver samurai game . . . but who the hell cares i guess its awesome . . too bad i havnt passed the game yet . . cuz i need a memory card but hey its still fun . . so i reccomend this game . . to any one . .
    • 073 4  This game has really nice pre rendered backrounds and the best graphics for it's time . The moving around is easy because the camera angles don't effect how you angle yourself to move . Foward is always forward , nomatter how the camera has shifted . The puzzles aren't immpossible and the powering up system is awsome . Best survival horror game . More action . The voices aren't very good . The music makes up for it . Short , it only takes 4 and a half hours to beat . The plot is good and the levels are really cool . Extremely fun game and it is only $20 .
    • 129 4  This is a great game with awsome graphics and a wonderful plot . One of the reasons it is so great is because it's a action adventure / puzzle / sratagy . Plus it's based of real acient Japanese generals .
    • 158 4  when you had one of those hard days at work this the kind of game you come home too and just relieve stress , i know the puzzles sucks , but the game play is awesome yeaaaah ! ! ! what can i say the graphics is beautiful and i will not comment on the character bad lip sync hey ! ! ! ! ! ! ! i don't care , this game is fun violence plain and simple and i like that , sorry ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! and some of the boss characters are great all in all this deserve a 4 stars laterzzzzzz . . . . . . . . . . .

  • 100 4  Personaly CAPCOM is 1 of my favorite companies . . . and if you like resident evil , this is a game you wont want to miss ! Awsome graphics , not much of a story , a cool samuri sword , and gameplay much like CAPCOM's RE series . I havent beat the game yet but from what i have heard , its a pretty short game . But it also has an amazing ammount of replay value ! I always start the game over just so i can go back and kill those stupid little zobies with the chineise hats . . . There is alot of diologe in this game and alot of those puzzles that CAPCOM interduced in Resident Evil 2 and 3 . This game is a fun game that will keep you playing for hours and will make a fine edtion to any collection !
    • 048 4  The opening scence got the best animation award in SIGGRAPH 2000 . And it servered it . The quality of the graphics is the best so far among all the PS2 games . The translation from the Japanese is bad but not affecting the fun of the game . The puzzles are not that hard , so it is better to solve them yourselves . This way , you will enjoy the game more . A MUST have PS2 title .
    • 079 4  I really loved this game . the storyline is good , and the weapon choices are cool too . thonly thing i cant do is 1 puzzle , but thats it . 1 thing bad about it is that the graghics [ aren't good ] . i mean how are you supossed to kill a boss when you cant see yourself . i would highly recomend this game to anyone who likes a good challenge .
    • 124 4  The game is very long , complicated , challenging , good animations , and a lot of surprise attack . Very different with other Adventure / RPG PS2 games that have a lot movie scenes , but less actions . I also like the topic of this game that has relationship with oda nobunaga and demons . The ending scene also good too , makes me think and curious about it . Other thing that I like is the PANDA COSTUME . It's soooooo cuteeeee ! ! When the 1st scene appeared , I couldn't stop laughing at it , the moving little panda in Samanosuke's panda costume also cute too . When Samanosuke's action figures are released in stores , absolutely I'm going to buy it ! ! GOOD JOB CAPCOM ! ! !

  • 101 4  I found my self unable to remove my butt from the beanbag , my eyes became one with the television set as I was a samurhi banishing demon's souls into my blinking wristwatch . Extreamly short but makes up with the lack of game time with the amazeing drewling expierence of BEING A SAMURHI ! ! ! I loved it , I can't wait intell they make a sequel , hopefully they'll give it more game length , more goreing effects , and more movements . It's fun , really intereasting story line and trully one to collect dust on your shelfs .
    • 084 4  So far so good , good game great graphics , a real thinker for you beginners out there , great game to own though . I recomend it to everybody .
    • 104 4  The game was very good but I beat it in under 4 hours the first day i bought it . It is a very good RPG with a good story line and great graphics but It is to short of a game . . . .

  • 111 4  Ok , I have to say that this game is a hell of alot better than most games . It has the Resident Evil look and touch , but is some what better . The game has a great look to it , and is challanging to an extent . Some times the game gets really confusing and you dont know if you are doing the right thing or just running around in circles . The only flaw to the game is how fast it is to beat . I did not buy this game and i dont recomend buying this game , but rent it . I played the game for five days and beat it . So go to Blockbuster and rent this game , if you cant beat it you just miss two really cool looking demonds and an awsome ending cinematic .
    • 093 4  Beautiful graphics and color , but pure boredom in gameplay . Control of the character is chunky and extrememly limited . I loved the change of weaponry , but absolutely hated the animated sequences . Onimusha was trying to be more of a cgi movie , than an actual game . Unless you like to sit back and watch poor movies with dubbed dialogue , stay away from this one .
    • 155 4  The other reviews pretty much cover everything about the game except the sometimes scary resemblence that Samonasuke has to Brendan Fraser . The Game is great but the horrible dubbing almost hurt it until I noticed that . Now its very humurous to watch the out of sync actors . I'm not trying to put the game down , I'm just sharing what I noticed so that others may enjoy the game more .

  • 116 4  This is a great Ps2 game . The grafics are fantastic . The story line is really great too . But , the game has some flaws in it . I like the fighting system in it . I reminds me of the resident evil fighting style . The control is very difficult for players who arent used to the Resident Evil type of push foward to go backwards and left for right . The voices were cool but the lips moving totaly different with the lips was annoying . And the game was hard to play for long periods of time . The longest i played it was 30 mins in a row . It is just an average game with some really good but bad points . Good game though . Rent before you buy it .
    • 071 4  The game is very difficult and fun . The only problem is that it is too short ! It takes only 2 hours to beat , and believe it or not , that is one of the objectives : to beat it in less than 2 hours ! This game was NOT worth 50 dollars back then , and isn't worth 20 dollars now . I would definitely reccommend a rental .
    • 074 4  This game is a one of the best for PS2 . It has non-stop action , upgradable weapons , and the controls come with time . You'll beat it in less than 8 hours , so rent this one .
    • 137 4  I want everyone to get this game now . Go up to the Add to Cart button and click it . This game is worth every cent you'll pay . It's a very fun game . The graphics are just gorgeous , it's just so clear and sharp . The gameplay is great too . It feels so good to be slicing into those dirty monsters . Anyways , buy this game . It has restored faith into the PS2 .

  • 123 4  I have resident evil , 1,2 and 3 . I bought onimusha warlords because I was looking for dynasty warriors instead , but the store didn't have it . Boy am I glad I got this game . I played it through once , got the panda suit that is fun to watch , played it again , got all the flourite pieces to unlock mini game which was challenging at first but I soon beat it , which allowed me to start the game with the bishamon sword , it kills normal enemies with one hit and bosses with only a few . Plus you get unlimited magic and if you beat the game with a s rank ( under 3 hours , 600 killed enemies , 55,000 souls absord - - sounds harder than you think ) you get a special dragon costume ( a dress with wings and a tail ) for kaede . This game is cool and so is the mini-game . I can't wait until the 2nd one comes out .
    • 021 4  Onimusha is the best release yet for the Playstation2 - Hands Down ! We just picked it up yesterday and my boyfriend has not slept yet ! The graphics are incredibly realistic , puzzles challenging , and the characters are excellent ! ( Wait until you see the weird guy hanging from the ceiling ! ) Remanisent of the Resident Evil days , only this time in a movie format - or that's what you would swear when you see the shots of the water and other detailed graphics . Even as a spectator it is enjoyable and entertaining . We are definatly glad we pre-ordered this game , it's going to sell like crazy PLUS it came with a free T-shirt ! 10 + Rating 5 stars * * * * *
    • 050 4  This game , though short , is an incredible experience . Capcom fnally under stood that the action of running , stopping and shooting sloth-like zombies was getting bland and they took the genre a step further . In Onimusha you slice and dice zombie-like swordsman , but don't be fooled , these zombies are quick with the steel . The story is generic : the princess get's kidnapped and it's your job to save her . The graphics and environment are sweet . The Medieval Japan settings look awesome with the setting sun shining on it . The whole game has an errie feel to it . Of course there is much blood shed and puzzles to solve and there is even a huge demon monster which speaks english ! Overall Onimush : Warlords is a sweet PS2 game . It has the value of a Resident Evil game , but with a much faster pace . Get Onimusha , it's short and sweet and you won't be dissapointed .
    • 130 4  This is most definetly one of the best single player Ps2 games available . It is not just a hack / slash game ( though it has plenty of that ) . Onimush allows for weapons upgrade , varying special attacks , puzzles , and a secret at the end of the game if 20 pieces of a certain item are found . Not to mention the great graphics and AI that the Ps2 has to offer . Onimusha delivers it all . The controlls are a little cumbersum at first , but once you get the hang of it there is nothing stopping your blade . The only drawback is that it could be longer ( I would take away one star for its shortness , however , it deserves 5 for game play ) . Other than that it is a well rounded , fun game with an enthraling story-line , and great opening movie . Great to rent or buy .
    • 151 4  I just purchased Onimusha a day early from a local retailer and my first impression was astounding . The opening movies ( although a little lengthy ) are absolutely gorgeous . The game basically is set up as a movie with you playing the title charecter . The game play does not disappoint . The controls are rather simple to grasp . The game is very innovative with many new moves and plenty of puzzles to keep you busy . A few of the problems i found was the camera angles were sometimes in awkward position restricting your vision of monsters . The game also was very short besides the movies . All in all this game was very fun and i recommend renting this game before buying because the replay value is not as great as other titles .

  • 150 4  This game is great . If you liked Resident Evil you'll love this game . Grapics - The Grapics are jaw dropping . The Opening CG scene is the best in any video game and at some points you belive it is real ! Control - If you have played Resident Evil you will be right at home . If not it will take a couple of seconds to get use too . Gameplay - Again same as RE but with a sword . Of course their are puzzles etc . Bottom Line - This game is a must have if you have a PS2 ! Trust ME !
    • 004 4  This game is perfect ! I saw the ads for it on TV and decided to buy it without renting first . I very rarely do that , but this time it was worth every penny of it and then some . The graphics are amazing in this game , the gameplay is great , and the story's pretty good too . It seems like the basic Save the princess game , but there are other characters and stuff , so it's really good . Playing the game is mad fun . I like this better than the Resident Evil games , because you don't have to worry about ammo . In RE , you have to duck around enemies without killing them to save ammo , but here you can kill anything that moves . You should , too , because you can collect their souls and use them to level up your items . That is a great addition to the game , and I find it very satisfying to save up enough souls to pump up the weapons to the max and then hack through more demons to get more souls . Although there's only 3 main weapons , they're varied enough to make them enough , and each has its own magic spell . The boss fights are each different and fun . On my memory card I have about 5 or 6 different save files , one before each boss , so I can fight each one whenever I want . My favorite boss is that Wasp-Lady , she takes awhile but it's fun . The CG movies in this game are simply astonishing . The intro movie ( and it does seem more like a movie than an intro ) is great , and the scatterings of CGs throughout the rest of the game are mad good too . I haven't finished the game yet , but I'm looking forward to the movie at the end , I know it's gonna be good . A little tip : at the main menu when you first turn it on , let it sit for a minute or so to see an ad for the game . It has CG clips and gameplay clips , and it's mad cool . I recommend this game to anyone and everyone . Rent it if you want , but you should just buy it , you won't regret it .
    • 018 4  Onimusha Warlords is a gorgeous game with an interesting story line . The game engine is classic Resident Evil , but OW is set in Feudal Japan . Instead of killing Zombies you are killing demon Warlord soldiers which had been killed in a war one year earlier at the site of the castle . In place of RE's modern weapons you have three swords and three different orbs . The three orbs ( fire , thunder , and wind ) each create their own majic attack . You can also possess knives , a bow , and a flintlock rifle . What I really like about the game is that it gives you a reason to fight enemies . When you kill enemies they release a soul energy and you have to suck in the soul ( just like soul reaver ) with an Ogre Gauntlet . The energy gained from these processed souls can be used to power up weapons and orbs . OW is different from RE in that there is no treasure boxes ; a player keeps every item found . The graphics are the best yet on PS2 and the story is pretty cool . I love the fact that the game audio has a Japanese option . It also has English / Japanese subtitles . The only thing keeping me from giving OW 5 stars is the game's length . It is fairly short even by RE standards . It should have been 2 or more discs . And it only takes about 5 - 6 hours of gameplay to defeat the game . Still OW is definitely worth the money . The magic in the game has amazing effects and the medievel hacking of enemies with magical swords is awesome . Bottom Line : The game has a decent story , amazing graphics , and fun gameplay . OW is a definite Top Five PS2 game .
    • 075 4  This game is amazing and brings you back to the roots of Onimusha . More challenging than the sequal ( which is also incredible ) it adds a rich story to a fun and engrossing adventure . the CG clips are also awe inspiring and beautiful , this game looks great and plays great . . . it's totally addictive and a definate must have .

  • 152 4  I waited this game for about a month and read all the reviews . With my expection , the graphic of the game is superb . Intro scene was movie-like where characters were almost look like real people . Although graphic was great , the story line was kind of cheesy . And it was not clear what is going on in the beginning . Still , the fighting enemy , looking for a items , and solving chest puzzle was fun . However , the control of the game can be very confusing and annoying . Since the forward button is always up , when you walking down on the screen , you can confuse and press down button where you backward instead of walking forward . This can be annoying for first 15 min but you will get use to it . Another bad control was that it is kind of hard to face the enemy . Although it does it automatically when you press the attack button , it would have been nice if they have a button to face the enemy like Soul Reaver . Overall the game is very easy to learn and fun . If you are looking for adventure game , this is a great game to have . I have not finished the game , but I can not hardly wait to play again . Since I did not finished the game yet , if you want to know what is the re-play value of the game , read other reviews .
    • 078 4  This is one of the few strategy games on the market that does not require a strategy guide . The best of the game is the fact that it may take at least two to three weeks to finish if you only play an hour or so a day . If you like this game , you might as well buy Onimusha 2 . Onimusha 2 requires a strategy guide but it plays like three seperate games . Onimusha Onimusha 2 are easily the best games I own .
    • 148 4  This is a great game but it is not that inovative there is one lv where you just smash buttons . but it is a great game i love it But , it is only 5 hours long so if you spend lots of time on a game just rent it . but it has a good replay value Onimusha 2 is on the way to so this will be good for a couple of weeks so this is a must buy or rent it is a fighting / action / adventure game it is great but I just wish it was longer . . .

  • 153 4  Have you ever wonder what Resident evil would be like if set in japans past ? Well here is your chance to find out . The opening cinematic is great it really pulls you in to the story line . The game play is smooth , there was a few times when I was playing it the game paused to load . The visuals are stunning . The controls are simple but effective . The options are nice you can set the game to have the Japanese's or English subtitles or Dialog the English dialog is kind'a of lame so I just use the subtitles . All in all the game is great .
    • 039 4  This Game was good , ending . . . , story was so so , gameplay was smooth and the controls were a pain . If you are going to buy this buy it used . Do yourself that favor .
    • 058 4  Bought the game yesterday . Probably the best new game I've played all year . Not a big gore fan , but the gameplay is amazing , the graphics are what I have been waiting for in the PS2 , and the storyline is incredible . If this is what the PS2 is about , can't wait till ZOE and MGS2 .
    • 095 4  I have been hearing about this game for months before I actually bought it ! I have to say that everything I have heard and read is absolutly true . I am a huge Resident Evil fan so this game is the end all and be all for me ! The story line is great , the graphic along with the over all feel of the game are outstanding ! This is just an over all fun , and beautifully done game , an absolute must have for all Resident Evil fans . Don't miss this one !
    • 097 4  This is the first game I've played from Capcom , and I have to tell you that it was an extremely enjoyable game , even though the total time it took me to finish the game was between 3 - 4 hours and to me that seems kind of short . There was a few parts were you don't know what in the heck you should do , but otherwise this game was extremely fun and has a lot of replay value . This game is a must have for your PS2 library . Don't miss out on this one .
    • 117 4  I think this is by far the best game i ever played for the PS2 with the exception of being way to short . As soon as I received my game , I started playing it and could not stop . I played it for 6 hours straight until i beat it . Everything about this game is so awesome . The only thing that sucks about it is that it is way to short .

  • 154 4  The first great survivor-horror game for PS2 ! Great graphic , cool presentation and good action . However it's too similar to the Resident Evil series games , which I really enjoyed also . Although the overall game play was enjoyable , sometimes I felt like playing the old Resident Evil games . Finding herbs , finding maps , upgrading weapons , finding ways to open locked doors , switching playing between male female characters and the usual final showdown with the big boss . . . . . It's way too similar ! ! I guess this is the limitation of the Capcom game designers who want to repeat the proven method instead of trying whole new game design . What a pity ! Also the game was way too easy and short that I was able to finish on the first day . Even the final boss was way too easy and I was able to beat him in few minutes ! The Metal Gear Solid 2 better not disappoint me .
    • 139 4  This game is definately the best game for PS2 as of now ! If you like the Resident Evil games , this is the game for you ! It is basically the same thing as Resident Evil , except you fight with swords and magic , and you can upgrade them throughout the game . Also , when you walk through doors and down stairs , it isn't as annoying as the Resident Evil games . The only reason I only gave it four stars instead of five is because its a little short , it only takes about 10 or less hours to beat the first time you play it . But , I would reccomend this game to anybody who likes the action type games . I hope you enjoy it as much as I did !
    • 141 4  Finnaly , A PS2 game that truly showcases the PS2 power . Yes I was one of the lucky to get my hands on the PS2 on 10 / 26 / 2000 , but Its seen more movie time then game time . Onimusha : Warlords is the only PS2 game that's held my attention for more then an hour . Warlords story is basic , a princess is kidnapped by evil guy , good guy must save the day . Unlike Resident Evil , Warlords has a few little eggs that make this far supirior . First of all in warlords you have the ability to preform some great combo's , magic attacks , and one hit kills . Also Warlords gives you what RE dosen't , the abilitty to Block . Warlords has some great eye candy , with seemless backgrounds , great looking enemys , and the magic attacks look great . Onishma : Warlords in my opinon , Is the best Survival Horror game to date , but warloads is also a little more fast paced then Traditional Survival Horror . So if your a fan of Resident Evil but its too Slow Mindless then try Onishuma : Warlords ,
    • 160 4  This is the best ps2 game yet . Me and my 12 friends beat it each 12 times and still are addicted to the game . This was the very first game I got and my brother made fun of me for getting a long action game right away . He said I should get a game thats not that hard and you can just sit back and play . He looks like a full now considering he wont even let me play it . I think that you should get this game first when you get the ps2 because it will truly show you what the ps2 can do . With its great gameplay , graphics and storyline it will blow you away . It is worth $50.00 . But buy a memory card , trust me you will get addicted to this game once you play it and get really far . . . . so you'll need to save .

  • I saw everything this game has to offer in 1 five day rental . I actually played through it TWICE . I had fun , was blown away by the graphics , but after I returned the game I never thought of it again . Onimusha can be compared to Resident Evil because it basically that same game only set in medival Japan . Anyone who has played the RE series will certainly feel some deja vu . You play a samuri warrior who must rescue a princess from a castle over run by zombies . The graphics are beautiful but are still the same static shots . However , the player models and little touches of smoke and such really make everything blend in together and seem more alive . Combat is simple yet strategic and very fun , although it gets old after the second run thru . Still , I enjoyed myself better than shooting zombies . There are a few puzzles in the game , but nothing too hard . The story , though , is very very simple , and a bit of a letdown . You can tell they cut parts of the game to release it on time . I consider Onimusha a part of the Resident Evil series because it is SO similiar to those games . Definitely rent it if you own a PS2 , but I think you money is better saved for RE : Code Veronica . . .
    • 002 4  Onimusha is very good , but let me say this : I saw everything this game has to offer in 1 five day rental . I actually played through it TWICE . • 030 4  ok first of all the controls are in a word really bad other than that on an epic scale this game gets a four for story line which is incredible by the way
    • 047 4  I just played this absolutely fantastic game . However I have yet to finish it , seeing that I can't seem to get past the semi-final boss battle . I found this game challenging and extremely fun , but also very , very short . If only it was longer . The opening scene was stunningly ! It literally puts Resident Evil to shame and I am a major RE fan . Wow , I couldn't believe the character designs in this game . Samanosuke actually looks like Takeshi Kineshiro ( the famous Japanese / Chinese actor - - i.e . ChungKing Express ) . You have to get this GAME ! ! ! !
    • 103 4  Hey all you Resident Evil philistines . . . . Onimusha was a great interlude while awaiting the first PS2 version of RE . In fact , RE could learn a few things from Warlords ( tired of spelling oni . . . onimushi , onimusha ) - - If CAPCOM could have Claire Redfield or Leon move with as many options as Samonoske . . . then we'd REALLY have something . Warlords ( although short ) adds that video game component that RE lacks . . . my [ gosh ] it would be great if CAPCOM could increase the zombie count and allow claire some more killing options . I thought the use of the gauntlet to accumulate strength was a nice deviation from standard RE health gauges . Complain all you want about it being too short , too easy - - it was $ . . . and entertained you for awhile . . . a date to the movies with a few beers will run you $50 - - so that should cover the cost of a rainy Tuesday night instead of a movie rental by youtself .
    • 146 4  Onimusha is now doubt , the biggest hit for the PS2 for the month of March , however , the game could have been planned out longer . No doubt , that graphics and sound wise , this is a must have game for your PS2 library , however , what disapointed me was the shortness of the game itself . I love the game , it has beautifully detailed rooms , waterfalls , water , and effects . And it's very easy to get started with Onimusha because the controls are so farmiliar to the RE style . I guess the only reason I complain is because I cannot wait for a 2 or 3 disced PS2 game to come out . Onimusha is a must have for anyone who has ever played ANY action game what-so-ever .

  • Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) Onimusha : Warlords must've blown people away back in 2001 , but time has reared its ugly face on this first entry in a series that has spawned 3 sequels and 1 spinoff fighting game . In many ways , this action title reminds me of ICO - - - throughly engaging and never dull , but it's over before you know it . The gameplay is actually very easy to describe if you've played any of the Resident Evil games ( besides RE 4 ) . The player will use the D-Pad to navigate , while using 2 attack buttons to combat enemies . There are even some RE - type puzzles and presentation ( fixed camera , each room has its own loadtime , documents , etc . ) . However , unlike Capcom's survival horror franchise , the controls ARE NOT clunky at all . This game is faster-paced , and instantly grabs your attention . There are very few stupid puzzles , and the weapons upgrades & item management is very simple . Even when the game switches characters , or if you're lost . . . you know that you're supposed to be stuck . Onimusha is a very user-friendly title . Onimusha offers the choice of Japanese or Engligh language AND subtitles ( a terrific feature ) . The story is either too simple or too vague , but what I gather is this : As Samanosuke , you once fought along with General Nobunaga until he is killed in combat . Then Nobunaga is soon resurrected by demons to take over the world , and it's up to you to kill him while rescuing a princess . Sadly , the story doesn't get much more detailed than that . This is almost like a Mario story with bloody hack-and-slash in Middle Age Japan . The story is ultimately what brings Onimusha : Warlords down a notch , even though there's a lot to like about it . The combat is easy to master and never gets too complicated . The graphics still hold up well . The music is excellent , and the voice acting is equally strong . But gamers don't get a chance understand the world they're playing in . For a game involving civil war and the supernatural , Onimusha is very simple and feels very isolated . In first paragraph , I compared this game to ICO . It was deliberately vague about the story , and depended entirely on its gameplay . It featured a massive world and 2 characters you wanted to spend time with , even if you had no idea who they were . ICO remains an art-house indie title , and can be forgiven for its 6 - hour length . But Onimusha feels like a sucker-punch . We meet several characters who seem important , but are never fully explained . We're thrust into a story we learn only by reading journals . We battle supernatural forces who seem only to exist within the confines of a castle keep . We have much to excited about , but experience very little after only 5 hours . I don't mind games ending with loose ends . God of War II , Metal Gear Solid , and Halo 2 are masterpieces . We didn't mind the ambiguous ending because we knew that an individual entry was a part of a larger universe . I have yet to play the sequels to this game , and I do intend on purchasing them . But I urge gamers to be careful with this first installment . I paid $4 & Tax at a GameStop store , and I still felt a little jipped . Onimusha : Warlords is a solid action game with outstanding presentation . It's never boring and always fun . Just don't expect much after a few hours . Back in 2001 , I would've given Onimusha : Warlords ( 8.75 / 10 ) But now it's 2008 , and games have evolved . I say ( 8.25 / 10 )
    • 001 4  Wow . What is there to say about this game without resulting in sweeping praise ? This game has great graphics , a wonderful storyline , and great replay value too . Take on the role of Samonosuke and his Ninja friend Kaede , who have set ot to retrieve Princess Yuki from the Demons who have overtaken the province . Samonosuke has been given powers by the subverted Ogre Clan , in the form of a Gauntlet that grants him the use of magic orbs and the ability to steal the souls of fallen demons , using their power to enhance his own , thus using it against them . Cool fragments of history are interspered into a wonderful storyline . The FMV sequences are great , and the graphics in the actual game are almost of the same level . I was a bit weary at first ; not being a big fan of the controls on the Resident Evil series , I thought the comparisons would be a major turn off . But the problems I have with the controls are minor compared to the plusses of this game . Combining hack and slach with adventure with strategy , and minor elements of a RPG , this game is hard to compare to other games . It's an experience in and of itself . This game had me going right up until the end , and I'm on my third replay . Onimusha is clearly one of the best games on the PS2 , and with a sequel on it's way , it promises to be one of the best series to boot .
    • 003 4  I'm not big on battle strategy unless I've got time to think - - in a game like this one , I charge the enemy and pound buttons until the enemy is pulp . Or I am . Which happens a lot . In this game , when you're smashed to dust somewhere around 5 times , the game hands you a free pass : the option to play in easy mode . Don't get me wrong - - I still die on occasion , but without this mode , the game would have been unsurmountable to a player of my skill ( and I use the term loosely ) . As it is , I've made it to the final boss ( though haven't beaten him yet ) and enjoyed the experience all around . 2 minor complaints : the use of the D-Pad only for character motion and the occasional bad camera angle . In the case of the D-pad , I don't mind not being able to use the analog stick , but the choice of how the D-pad functions is a little weird - - the left / right arrows turn you , the up arrow sprints you forward , and the down arrow jumps you back . I seem to spend a lot of time tapping the left and right to line up where I want to go before I go there . . . this is especially bad when you're in the middle of a boss fight . The camera angles are generally quite good , but often you'll find yourself fighting a demon who is out of view , and you have no way to bring him into view except to try to move somewhere that there's a more favorable camera angle . My personal solution is to hack-and-slash toward the enemy because a ) you can kill him even if he's not on camera and b ) you'll usually slash your way to a better camera angle . Once or twice , though , the camera angle set me up to take damage I could easily have avoided , and since Kaede can't heal except with the games rather scarce herbs and medicines ( I've never seen a game as stingy with healing items ) , having her take damage is a pretty expensive proposition . But the game is pretty , sounds good , is anywhere from reasonably challenging to what ? Are you crazy ? depending on your skill level , and has a pretty decent story and system of combat / magic . If you like hard-driving combat against some pretty tough enemies and don't mind that the puzzles aren't especially tricky , this is a solid offering that you should enjoy . Worth your time , even if it is a little on the short side .
    • 005 4  I bought this game about a week ago , and I love it ! The story is good , and the graphics are awesome . Also , who doesn't enjoy hacking up hundreds of nasty , evil demons into tiny bits ? ! ? I found that it was only moderately challenging to defeat , and the game is a little on the short side . Those are the games only two real cons ; however , there are a lot of extras to unlock that make it worth playing over and over again , and these are the challenging part of the game . Trying to get the Bishamon Sword and beating Oni Spirits will be challenging for most any gamer . I swear that one could play Oni Spirits for weeks and not defeat it ! Also , the creators of the game had a little sense of humor . . . . One of their extras that can be unlocked after beating the game involves going back through the game with the samuarai protagonist , Samanosuke , dressed in a giant panda suit . It is one of the most hilarious things I have ever seen ! Apparently there are a couple of other extras to unlock too that are nearly impossible to do but sound very interesting . . . Pros : - Great graphics - Outstanding story and characters - Awesome concept = saving feudal Japan from demons as a spiritually enhanced samurai - Difficult extras to get Cons : - Not very long - Not too difficult to just defeat - I didn't think the ending was that good ( just my particular opinon ) I hope this helps someone out there . . . .
    • 016 4  This game has some of the prettiest graphics I have ever seen . It's the first good game I bought for my PS2 . It's really fun . . while it lasts . Yes it is a pretty short game , but it's good while it lasts . It has some replay value because it's just fun to fight the bad guys . Some of the puzzles are a little challenging , but it's not rocket science . Going into hell is also a trip , it took me a couple of hours before I could beat it . Tip : Keep Japanese Language on and turn on the English Subtitles , it helps keep the import feel
    • 017 4  I found Onimusha : Warlords one of the greatest games on PS2 . Fantastic graphics , good storyline , perfect controls . Everything a game needs to be successful . The game is like Resident Evil , if you take the characters , settings , and guns away you'll find out that you have the perfect match of Resident Evil . This game even made #1 on the top ten games of Playstation Magazine ! The thing that surprised me although was that the game was very short . I loved it until I came to the demon world ( not going to mention anything more , sorry ) and that I'd only played about an hour of the game . I was really surprised and became frustrated about it . Except about this game being short , I thought this game was awesome and deserves to be on the top ten list . I gave it a four star rating ( I would've given it a five star rating ) because of it's length . Mabey , the producers will somehow decide to make a sequal or a prequel ( or whatever game they want to make ) . I would rent this game If I were you , and if you like it buy it , cause it's sorta a waste of money to play a game for one hour , when you could be playing Resident Evil for eight hours . So rent it first and see how it looks .
    • 022 4  This review is from : Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) I always figured Onimusha games were action type stuff . I'm a big survival horror nut , so when I heard about this game being that type of playing experience I figured I had to try it . At the price it goes for I had nothing to lose . In short , this game is simply awesome . It is pretty ( even for now ) , has a good story , is just plain fun , and pretty easy to control despite what some people have said . I pretty much tolerate games that don't have use of analog sticks ( except RPGs ) , I hardly ever praise them . That said , I had hardly any problems adjusting to the control . The only thing bad about this game is its shortness . I played through it in about 5 - 6 hours ( counting cutscenes ) , but I had a blast .
    • 023 4  I always figured Onimusha games were action type stuff . I'm a big survival horror nut , so when I heard about this game being that type of playing experience I figured I had to try it . At the price it goes for I had nothing to lose . In short , this game is simply awesome . • 024 4  This review is from : Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) I bought this game and finished it recently . Not a big fan . There's a major reason there's a million copies of this game in the bargain bin of any used game store . I'd never played games with similiar control schemes like the Resident Evil games myself so I'm not used to the choppy control style and the lack of platforming ( no jumping period ) . The cinematics were wonderful and dramatic . Whoever designed the visuals deserves a raise , but I HATE the controls . The worst thing about the control is that manuevering is a 2 step process instead of a more intuitive and efficient 1 step process . For example , let's say you want your character to walk to the right . You must FIRST rotate him in the direction you want to go THEN press forward on the directional pad ( this ain't an FPS ) . He rotates way too slow . They try and compensate for this by using another button to pull off a quick 180 turn , also your character will often automatically face the next enemy the AI thinks you will want to strike . When you're surrounded by three enemies , your disadvantage is compounded . Some may say this is challenging , I just call it what it is , crappy play control . Also , the fact that you can simply just tap the attack button and watch your character slice several enemies in sequence without doing anything else is not a plus in my book . I want a game that actually requires me to play it , not tap a button mindlessly . I think this exemplifies the meaning of the term button mashing . If you want an action packed and cinematically impressive hack - ' em-up I highly recommend God of War . [ see my other reviews ] The gameplay was loads better and just as impressive graphically if not more so . Plus , you can jump in it , and there is a moderate amount of platforming thrown in for variety .

    • 026 4  This review is from : Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) I'm not a big fan of the archaic Resident Evil controls and gameplay , but Onimusha manages to utilize the control scheme for a faster paced action game with some adventure and puzzle elements . It's very satisfying , and if you can find it for the right price , it is certainly worth it . Some may complain about the length , so I don't recommend spending more than 10 dollars on the game .
    • 028 4  This review is from : Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) When I saw this , it looked like a Resident Evil-type game , only instead of zombies , there's demons and instead of guns , you use swords . I picked this up the other day and now I'm ready to give you , my loyal fans ( if I have any ) , my opinion of Onimusha : Warlords . Now to start off , the graphics are a thing of beauty , even if the game's about 2 or 3 years old . Backgrounds are highly detailed , character models are stunning , and the CG intro is just nothing short of jaw-dropping . Music is pretty darn good too , but the English voice-acting is horrendous . I've set it to the Japanese acting instead of the English . Controls will take some getting used to unless you're a Resident Evil veteran . Once you get the control scheme down pat , it's all gravy from there . Only other complaint is game length , camera issues ( like every single Capcom survival horror game ) and English acting . I will mention that Onimusha does do a few things better than most games of this particular genre do ( save for Devil May Cry ) . One is you can block attacks , death stab an enemy once it's down , and the swords are fun to use . I know this is a reletively short review , but it's a reletively short game . Overall , I still give it a 4 out of 5 . This is Sean David , signing off . Until next time , Semper Fi , Carry On .

    • 032 4  I loved this game the day I got it and still do . The battle in the beginning was awesome ! ! ! ! ! Samanosuke is my favorite character ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! The power that Samanosuke has or gets reminds me of something like Legacy Of Kain : Soul Reaver . When you beat an enemy you take there energy and you become more stronger . Oh , and they sound much better with there Japaness voices . And like I said this is better than the second one . How ? ? ? Let me count the ways . 1 . ) A Better main character ( Samanosuke looks and acts better than Jubei ) . 2 . ) Better characters ( The characters in Onimusha 2 are just too stupid and annoying ) . 3 . ) A better story and plot . The story seemed more believale in the first one ( I don't know it just does ) . If I was fighing evil I would stay there and fight it . Not go to a town to talk and to trade . And there was too much hi-tech stuff for that time . 4 . ) In the second one , there were times I found myself not knowing what to do or where to go . 5 . ) It's harder to upgrade your weapons in the second one . It just takes forever . 6 . ) There's no falling in love with some body you don't really know at all . 7 . ) A better ending than the second one . And Samanosuke is coming back in Onimusha 3 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! I want to give this 6 stars but it won't let me .
    • 037 4  This is a great game if you manage not to trash it out of anger and frustration . Monsters are tough , powerups and save points scarce , and there is that infamous timed water puzzle that will make you want to smash your PS2 . This has to be one of the most difficult games to beat I have played ( together with GT2 ) ; no comparison with the game's close cousin Devil may Cry , which I beat without cheating in a less than 5 hours . The english voice overs some people complain about are only a minor nuisance IMHO ; I prefer playing the game in Japanese with English subtitles ( you can in the US version ) for a more authentic feeling . Other than that , the game offers tremendous swordfighting action , outstanding visuals and sound , and a cool , original , and captivating story .
    • 040 4  I really enjoyed this game . It's interesting - like you're playing a movie ( same style as Res . Evil , Dino Crisis , etc . ) . However , it's simplistic , and there's not enough hidden stuff to make me play it more than once . I'll probably go back and play it again , in a few months . Maybe . It's good that Capcom can keep improving on what is , essentially , the same game . However , they're going to have to come up with something NEW , if they want to keep their fans from turning to different companies . If you haven't played the whole string of games they've already made which are exactly like this , then buy Onimusha . Otherwise , rent it for the weekend and save your money .
    • 046 4  The first big survival horror game for the Playstation 2 is Onimusha Warlords . Set in ancient Japan you take the role of Samonosuke , as he quests to rescue a kidnapped princess . Instead of normal Resident Evil style of blowing away zombies with modern weapons , you are equipped only with melee weapons and a magic gauntlet . The game is incredible to look at as the art for the game is incredibly detailed . The characters move gracefully through the areas fighting through hordes demons . The game is played from fixed perspectives that change as you near the edge of the screen . For the most part this style works well in the game , but there are a few occasions where an enemy will strike at you from off the screen giving you no warning at all . The controls are handled quite well in Onimusha . For combat there are buttons to attack , block , for magic , and one to strafe around targets ( similar to N64 ' s Legend of Zelda ) . When fighting creatures one on one , or even groups of lesser creatures the game is a blast ot play , hacking through hordes of demons . However , when you get accosted by multiple enemies whose attacks have to be dodged to avoid damage , the game can turn frustrating fairly quickly . Outside of combat you use a gauntlet to absorb the souls of vanquished foes to recharge health and magic and to enhance weapons and keys . In addition , there are very minor puzzles that need to be solved throughout the game as well . The game stays fairly linear ( find this key , open this door , etc ) and you're never too lost in the game , but I think that's mainly a result of the small size of the game itself , more on this later . The story is nothing spectacular . It's the tried and true rescue the princess from the big evil creature idea . It works , but lacks any major originality . Unfortunately the game seems to spend as much time setting up the story for this game as they do for the sequel . Without spoiling anything I'll just say there are major events that seem to have been put into the game that are never addressed . I didn't pay money for the game in order to find out what the next game was going to be about and was quite disappointed in this aspect . In all the game took about 6 hours or so to go through the first time . It's another case of a PS2 game that can be rented and beaten before it needs to be returned . The game offers a few extras , the most noticable being a small mini-game that can be activated if you can find 20 special stones ( fluorite ) throughout the game . Otherwise the only reason to play the game again is because of the new costumes that the characters can wear , which is hardly worthwhile . In conclusion the game is fun . I did enjoy the hours that I put into the game , but it left me wanting so much more . This game adds to the list of games that I highly recommend you rent before you buy . You will probably be able to beat the game and save yourself a bunch of money for future games .
    • 051 4  At first glance , it's hard to distinguish Onimusha from aother Capcom titles like Resident Evil and Dino Crisis . The same stuff is there : fighting the undead , lots o ' blood , betrayal , lots o ' blood , soul-sucking . . . . wait , that wasn't in RE . . . . . Onimusha is a very fun and exciting game that stays chalenging yet can also be relatively simple with certain puzzles . This makes for a fun and exciting experience through an ancient monster and zombie-ridden Japan . Thanks , Capcom . Just what I need : more nightmares .
    • 055 4  Wow this game looks wonderful . Not only that , but the play control is superb . The graphics flow eloquently . And the story is interesting . I don't own a PS2 , but my friend has one . After renting this game I immediately went out and purchased it . I was almost compelled to buy a PS2 as well . The games atmosphere follows that of the times of ninja warriors and such . Upon watching the opening movies , which was well over 5 minutes long . I figured this game to be your typical ninja warrior saves the princess from the evil ninja clan . I was shocked , although I shoud've seen it coming , to fing out it has a more resident evil-esque plot to it . With beasts and undead samurai warriors I was immediately engulfed in a hack and slash puzzle mystery . Of course the company that brought us resident evil also made this game , Capcom . And what a game it is . I compared the graphics and play control to Shenmue and quickly noticed a vast improvement . Not only do the charecters move with speed and grace , but the graphics maintain constant ' smoothness . ' The setting is ' mediaeval ' japan , you play a lone warrior who is bound to no clans in a fight to save a princess from the evil demons who want to use her blood to conquer the world . You also gain assistance from a ninja girl in your quest to hack and slash your way to the end . If there was ever a better reason to purchase a PS2 or a awesome game , then Onimusha : Warlords is it . I can't stress how well this games play control is , but the hack and slash tactics seem similar to a Double Dragon game , while following a Resident Evil style plot . The only reason why I give this four stars is the game seems to lack fast load times , and sometimes seems to freeze up for a second during critical battles , also I found this game to be too short in length . Other than that this game is a must buy for any fan of fast paced action and realisitc horror and gore .
    • 059 4  This review is from : Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) the only reason im going to give it 2 instead of one is bc of the quality of graphics but the game playing sucks . . i dont know wat is lamer walking around repetively hacking slashing the same creatures over again or the bosses who are just overgrown blowhards who take a couple of shots u need no real stradegy to beat them . . . also , i dont dig the storyline or want a storyline . . . i mean ur a japense ninja equiped with japense fine steel u would expect a great fighting game not some cinematic movie clips
    • 061 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) Onimusha : Warlords must've blown people away back in 2001 , but time has reared its ugly face on this first entry in a series that has spawned 3 sequels and 1 spinoff fighting game .

    • 068 4  This review is from : Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) Granted , we all thought this game lacked because it was only about 5 hours long . But , when you set down the controller after beating the final boss , you'd have thought you went through at least 10 ( most likely because you'll be playing it on and off ) . There's just so much story packed into those 5 hours . Another great quality is the graphics . Most of the time , you'll see a pre-rendered backdrop behind your character , something not too unusual if you've played alot of PC games in the 90 ' s . It also leads you to pressing X to go up ladders , stairs , or opening anything interactive-fading to black , then reappearing with the object affected appropriately . Aside from that , later on in the game , backgrounds begin to move in a strangely beautiful animation , such as in the Dark Realm or out on a lake at night with a moon reflecting in the water . But what makes it beautiful is that it actually seems to be moving dynamically , rahter than some obvious loop . So it's not as painful as you think it is to not have the background move with the character . In most games , alot of developers screw that part up anyway . One final note on the graphics is that with Playstation 2 ' s new engine , the character model looks almost exactly as detailed as a model in an FMV . And indeed , the game doesn't seem to find much use for an FMV transition , as the models look realistic anyhow . So , now that I've sold you on the graphics , let's talk gameplay . I felt that this was the only obvious feature that I had trouble with . Basically , you don't even need a Dual-Shock controller to play this game . It's all done with arrows , buttons , and the L R buttons for blocking and such . Well , that's not too bad . Except that left and right turns you left and right , while forward and backward makes you go , well , forward and backward . So , it's something to get used to , especially in battle . After playing the game for a few minutes , you get the feel for things . And finally , difficulty . This game can be one sick little monkey as you get farther in the game . The whole game runs off of the Resident Evil engine , which makes health and ammo hard to recover . You'll have to stick it out by using alot of your blocking and dodging skills , not to mention making the right attack at the right time . So , I guess it's good in that there is some skill required to beat it . But some bosses , and even just getting from place to place can be difficult without getting sliced or shot with arrows . I give this game 4 out 5 because it's everything I wanted in a good , involving story ( as well as some side plots by reading pieces of a journal that you have to collect as you play ) , a steady theme , an excellent soundtrack , and a perfect legacy for the other sequels . It's not my favorite game , so it doesn't get a 5 , but it's definitely something to look back on .

    • 070 4  This review is from : Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) The game is very difficult and fun . The only problem is that it is too short ! It takes only 2 hours to beat , and believe it or not , that is one of the objectives : to beat it in less than 2 hours ! This game was NOT worth 50 dollars back then , and isn't worth 20 dollars now . I would definitely reccommend a rental .
    • 082 4  This game is one of the most inspiring games Capcom Co . has ever made. The game controls are out standing. Its so good My 9 year old cousin knows the handling by heart.I'd give it a 5 star because he moves , storyline , characters , speech , and culture are my type of game Genre. This game is the best RPG game there is.Many number and word puzzles make it more difficalt. It just needs one more thing added to this game , More bosses. This game is awsome ! • 085 4  This is a really great game with a good variety . The only real problem i saw is that it is short . Im talking about 8 hours if your a good gamer . The controls can be a bit difficult to get used to but after about an hour they start to flow . Great variety of moves , you can do about anything : slash stab you can even impale demons if you can get them on the ground . once you get Kaede ( the female hero ) who is a ninja you can jump over your opponent and slit his throat . Also if you beat the game and get an S rating you get the extra costumes which add to replay value . Who doesnt wanna see a giant panda bear with a huge sword cutting up demons . Graphics 5 Story 5 Controls 4
    • 087 4  This game is definitly one of the best RPG's to have ever been released for any system . This is a difficult game that you could honestly play all day and not get sick of it , but you will get frustrated at certain points . This game has great graphics . The demons look realistic and the weapons can actually be told apart from each other , unlike older games . But then again , it could just be the PS2 . This is one game that you wouldn't make you stupid if you constantly played it . You actually must think in order to play it . There are many challenging areas to the game . Whether it's lighting candles to open a door , or using strategy to pull levers to raise jail-like bars , or even trying to beat a clock and put two crests together to save your partner . Overall , this is a must buy for almost any owner of a PS2 . You will NOT be sorry , believe me .
    • 088 4  This game is saaaawwweeeeet . The gameplay reminded me of devil may cry . ( except it's not as good because you don't have a gun ) Graphics : 9 / 10 Really good but the CG cinemas look dated . control : 10 / 10 Easy to learn and responds quickly . story : 7 / 10 it's good but nothing to special . Just what you would expect out of a action adventure game . sound : 10 / 10 . Great voice acting and disturbing zombie squishes . replay : 8 / 10 . hack ! HACK HACK HACK ! cut cinemas 9 / 10 . Although the graphics aren't all that great , they're action packed an really cool . overall fun 9 / 10 : hack and slash madness . If you liked devil may cry you'll love this game .
    • 094 4  The first and foremost thing about this game that jumps out at me is that it took me five hours of game time to beat it . Including my deaths and needing to reply it couldn't have been more than six hours . For a storyline game , meaning replay values is small , six hours is far too short . Because of the small amount of play involved , this is not a game to buy . That being said , this is a great game to rent ! This is not a puzzle game ; this is an action game . The puzzles mostly revolved around a door being locked and you having to run down a different corridor until you get the key . There are also a few boxes that have scrambled numbers on them which you must put into the correct order to open , a room where levers must be pulled in the right order , and a trapped floor that requires a little thought and the use of both your characters to safely get across . That's the limit of the puzzle aspect of the game and that's fine , because this is an action game . On the action side , most fighting it done with one of the three bladed weapons you pick up in the game , so you don't have to worry about limited ammo ( unless you like using the bow or gun ) . The combat is pretty simple and mostly involves hitting when there's an opening and then blocking or stepping out of the way when there's not . Unfortunately , the game has Resident Evil style controls ( Up is forward , left turns left , right turns right , back is back ) which makes complicated battle sequences difficult . That's probably why the game doesn't really have any complicated battles . Hopefully the sequel will go with the Devil May Cry controls that lead to much faster paced combat . I liked the game because the story line and graphics were great , the battles were challenging and there were enough different opponents to keep them interesting . Plus parts of the game get played with Kaede ( your very attractive ninja side-kick ) to add some extra flavor . Though because of her inability to get back health and power-up from fallen foes , her playtime is less action oriented and more strategy . It gives a good mix to the game . Overall , rent this game on some week when you've got six or so hours you can put into it . The graphics are great , the game play is pretty good , and it's fun .
    • 098 4  This game looked enticing . . . but I didn't realize from the cover that this is just a souped-up resident evil clone . Granted that the graphics are pretty good and the gameplay is pretty fast , but there's not much to the game beyond that . Go to the next area , kill the monsters there ( without the Resident Evil save-your-ammo-like-your-life-depends-on-it stratedgy which made Res Evil games so edgy ) , get the item , solve the obligatory puzzle , repeat . The ' horror ' aspect of Resident Evil games is completely gone which makes this one a bit heavy on the cheesy and not-so-challenging side . It's also REAL short . Good graphics , not so go voice overs , not too compelling storyline ( save the princess . . . groan ! ) . I was disappointed , but I guess I might be in the minority .
    • 108 4  Onimusha : Warlords is an epic saga of 16th century Japan when warlords fought brutal hand-to-hand battles for rulership and power . The game weaves actual historical accounts and Capcom's own fictional storylines into one epic drama . Taking place in Feudal Japan ( 1560 ) , Onimusha is set in the civil war time ruled by the feared warlord Nobunaga Oda . An Epic Masterpiece . . . In a world of darkness and magic , power hungry warlords battle one another for control of feudal Japan . At the height of the chaos , a young princess is kidnapped . Now , one lone swordsman , Samanosuke , boldly volunteers to rescue and avenge the noble princess . But in these dark and mysterious times , even Samanosuke does not realize the desperation of his mission . An entire legion of demon warriorsstands between him , the princessand triumph ! Game Features : Revolutionary background animation technology - backgrounds come alive with waterfalls , wind effects , insects , weather and more Unrivaled realism - characters come alive with realistic emotion and character animation Stunning motion picture quality , CG movies - a TRUE cinematic gaming experience !
    • 118 4  God , everything about this game is flawless . Even with the realistic graphics and incredible animations of flying blood and flickering flames , the action remains smooth and crisp . Every single move is linked by smooth transitions that make you feel like a samurai in action . The gameplay is addictive , the puzzles are challenging , and the story , while unoriginal at times with cheesy dialogue , is strangely catchy at times . Plus , it has a great replay value to get all of the bunuses , like the hilarious panda suit and the ultra-powerful Bishamon Sword . Overall , if there is one game you have to get for the PS2 , this IS IT . Well worth every cent and then some .
    • 120 4  I recently purchased a Playstation 2 , an considered selling it after I bought a string of bad games . Afetr being dissapointed by games like Track and Field and Oni , I had lost my faith in Sony . I heard of Onimusha from a friend , and was blown away by how incredible it was . Firstly , the Graphics . I could hardly tell the difference between the end of the first battle cutscene , and when the gameplay started , and the Graphics stay this good through the game , unlike games like Revenant , where the Graphics tend to get worse as the game goes on . Usually , with games like this , the Gameplay is scratchy , and the polygons clash and sink through each other . Also , with fighting games , if you pull too many moves at a time , the game freezes . With Onimusha , I have never had any problems , and the fighting is not only amazing and hugely varied from flips and kicks to stabs and slashes with one of 11 different weapons . Like most games , it's not hack and slash . There IS strategy , and if you fail to use it , you WILL die . The sound is good , possibly not as much as games like Final Fantasy , but the SFX sounds are amazing . Gunshots , screams , and talking is much clearer , while the background sound is varied , but is much of the same mystery type music . Fans of Resident Evil who didn't buy it just for the guns will like this . The world of Onimusha is based on Ancient Japan's fascination with demons . You are Samonsuke , who battles his way through hundreds of different types of demon creatures with magical weapons and powers to aid him . The storyline is vast , and with different modes ( which get progressively harder and open up new areas ) and hidden games and secrets , the possibilities for multiplay are vast .
    • 142 4  The best game currently available on PS2 : Onimusha Warlords . The game is short by Resident Evil standards , yet that is only due to the fact that the game does not force you to backtrack all the way through the level in order to find something you may have missed . This , in my opinion , is not a negative . The action is fast and furious , combined with some great Japanese voice acting and some adequate English voice work . The game is on a DVD disc , and takes approximately 8 in-game hours to complete . Those eight hours do not include the many times you will die without saving , thus easily adding another three to four hours to overall gameplaying time . One thing worth mentioning is the overall polished feel the game exhibits . The presentation is very welldone , and Capcom is known for quality titles . Onimusha does not disappoint . This game is a masterpiece in everyway imaginable . If you want a game to show off your PS2 , this is it ! It's the survival-horror game for people who don't like survival-horror games . Buy it .
    • 145 4  I know it's been said many times already , but here is the review that sums it up . Excellent game ! Yeah , the dubbing is bad but who cares , the movies are still pretty good . Fighting and general game play rock , as well as the overall storyline . No one should be disappointed in these attributes . Now the disappointment . It is pretty easy to finish in a short amount of time . ( Great for sports , but not a good quality for an action / adventure game . ) Although I may play through it one more time , that will be it . I remember Zelda for N - 64 took me weeks to finish , playing it a little every day , but finishing this in just a couple days is kind of weak . ( I know Zelda does not compare on many other attributes , but just making a point . ) These action / adventure developers need to stretch the value of our purchases a little further . I literally could have finished the game with one 5 day rental from Blockbuster . After seeing the trailer for Onimusha 2 at the end of the game , I think all of us who bought it should get discounted versions of the sequel . Wishful thinking , I know .

  • Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) Good : You get a free case for the CD ? Bad . No jump button . Linear game play ( You use a button to access doors and stairs , what is this 1985 ? ) Clunky controls . Its like driving an RC car where you have to mentally reverse your thinking when the car is coming toward you versus going away . This is totally lame and makes the game practically unplayable . Did I mention no jump button ? I paid $5 and would have had more fun had I kept the money and A ) made a paper airplane with it or B ) set it on fire and watched the delightful glow . Buy Devil May Cry 3 and have a blast . Avoid this one
    • 012 4  This game is very highly rated , and I expected more out of it . The graphics are pretty good , and the cut scenes are interesting , providing a good story line , but the game play between the cut scenes is all too short . As with a lot of games with a mission , once the mission is completed the first time , a lot of the fun goes out of the game . This game is probably a better game to rent than to buy .
    • 089 4  I only have one recomendation for this game and that is turn up the volum almost all the way up for full effect . The graphices a very good as well . It was a little short , but still keeps you on the edge from start to finish . Buy it .

  • Soul Reaver , your ultimate quest is to defeat enemies and use their very souls to enhance your own performance . The story explains this away as such ; on their way to conquering the Earth , the demons made mortal enemies of ogres . Enraged , the ogres have chosen Samanosuke to represent them in halting the demons ' plans , a sort of sweet scheme for revenge . They grant you a bulky attachment for your right arm , used to capture enemy souls , and send you on your way . If that sounds a little bit out of left field , that's because it is . . . the storyline on the whole is overly confusing , generally silly and even occasionally ignored . In keeping with that trend , the voice acting takes poorly written dialogue and brutally drags it along the coals . These guys didn't even ATTEMPT to match what they were saying with their character's lips , and it's not an uncommon thing to see your character's gums flapping for a couple seconds after he's quit speaking . Despite their ability to pronounce all the characters ' names correctly , the voice talent just isn't getting the job done here . I'd rather read subtitles than endure this . Fortunately enough , the graphics almost completely make up for the lack of compelling audio just by themselves . As a first wave title for the PS2 , there were most certainly lofty expectations for this disc , and I'd wager it's exceeded even those . Onimusha is a brilliant visual treat , taking full advantage of what the new system had to offer . Even live-rendered scenes look exceptional , with blur effects , trailers following various light sources on the screen , and a well-designed rogue's gallery to hack your way through . Likewise , the FMV scenes in Onimusha , infrequent as they may be , are stunning . Though they haven't quite reached the level of perfection that Squaresoft seems to demand in their cinema scenes , Capcom's crew is giving the masters a stern run for their money . While the story may be a little on the light side , the real emphasis in these scenes is on dynamic poses and memorable moments . As the back story is explained , hundreds upon hundreds of soldiers march in slow motion , illuminated only by the moonlight , their spears extending a good six feet above their heads . It's an ominous visual , one that sticks with you long after the power button has been turned off . As a standard hack-n-slash affair , the gameplay doesn't exactly light the world on fire . If you've played Final Fight , you basically know what the deal is here , though battles do occasionally require a bit more strategy than that old Capcom standby . You're granted a limited amount of magic special attacks , which are best saved for major battles , and the rest of the game is comprised of madly smashing the square button , retreating before the enemy can attack you , and repeating . Interspersed throughout the land are a series of rudimentary puzzles , which range from not entirely challenging to simple . You'll find a special item , hold onto it for a couple minutes , and then find the doorway or puzzle requiring its use . Again , nothing to write home about , but something that'll keep you occupied . My one major complaint about the game is its length . Perhaps I've grown a bit too used to RPGs that span upwards of ten , twenty , sixty hours before completion . I defeated Onimusha in four and a half , with relative ease . The end boss was a pushover , and I was never really concerned about being killed in that final battle . Though I did fall on three or four occasions , it was always due to my own stubbornness ( I refuse to use potions and recovery items unless ABSOLUTELY necessary ) and not any real difficulty built into the game itself . If you know how to press the square button and have retained any sort of knowledge from elementary school , you shouldn't have much problem defeating this one . Though it's heavily reliant on one battle system , things never seem to become monotonous . The scenery changes often , new enemies are introduced at just the right times , and there's a real epic , cinematic feel to this that can't be put into words . For all my words about what this game could have been , I think it's silly to overlook what it is . A solid , entertaining little package .

    • 033 4  I really had no idea what to expect going in , with this one . On one hand it was produced by Capcom , one of my all-time favorite publishers , and even they had seen enough potential in it to immediately produce a sequel . On the other , if just due to the period in which the game was set , I was immediately confusing it with Nobunaga's Ambition , a military simulation game that's had about 1500 sequels and dozens of imitations in the decade or so since it was first released . I'm not a fan of military simulation . But within the first minute of play my suspicions and fears were whisked away . Onimusha had taken hold of me , and however hard I tried , I just couldn't put it down for long . As Samanosuke , you've returned from a horrifying battlefield to discover the princess you've spent your life protecting has been abducted . Naturally , you embark on a simple quest to rescue the princess from her captors . However , instead of battling enemy soldiers , Samanosuke finds himself mixed up in the middle of a fight between demons and humans , the undead and the living . It's like Resident Evil on a grander scale . However , the similarities to Capcom's original survival horror series extend well beyond the mere involvement of the living dead and related monsters . Truly , the bulk of the game itself may have been ported directly from the RE series . Onimusha is not a true 3 - D platform title , your surroundings aren't totally navigable . You watch from an overhead view , as Samanosuke runs from one pre-rendered background to the next . As you run off the screen , the camera angle changes and a new background fills the screen . Much like The Legacy of Kain : Soul Reaver , your ultimate quest is to defeat enemies and use their very souls to enhance your own performance . The story explains this away as such ; on their way to conquering the Earth , the demons made mortal enemies of ogres . Enraged , the ogres have chosen Samanosuke to represent them in halting the demons ' plans , a sort of sweet scheme for revenge . • 066 4  This review is from : Onimusha Warlords ( Video Game ) GENERALLY this game is the best you can lay your hands on , specially if you are into nice swords ( specially the thirdone = ) , moderate share of action and puzzles , like to find all kind of items , upgrade , and last but not least : enjoy the Japanese historical scenery in background . Very nice graphics , very good storyline , not too easy , not too hard , couple of different characters which game switches for you in couple of places . CONTROLS There is nothing wrong with controls at all , once you get used to them in beginning . Couple of moves and you are into it . No problem what so ever . Besides , the game gives you opportunity to learn to use everything in beginning , without any boring teachers talk or long separate tutorials . SOUND Good sound that works nicely togehter with this game . The only thing I do not like is that you CAN'T choose JAPANESE SPEACH on it . I believe I speak for quite few people out there when I say that it would be cool to have original talk / sound on games , specially when it is specifically into certain culture ; when games are restricted to region ; and when chipping is hard to do , impossible or illegal . There should be at least this option to choose in every game : original language with and without subtitles ! ! RECOMMENDATIONS I recommend this game to everybody as best game TO OWN , and definitely continue with it . Have fun ! ! : )

    • 147 4  Onimusha is cool . It's that simple . Great graphics , great sound , decent control , an interesting ( and rather strange ) premise and storyline , and some cleverly designed main characters make Onimusha the first game since PS2 ' s launch to really crow about . Onimusha is very much an arcade style game . The battles are intense , the attacks are fluid , the bosses are huge , the weapons are sweet ( as is the upgrade system ) , and the music and sound effects are great . Unfortunately , Onimusha is also very much an arcade style game , which means it is WAY too short ( a growing trend with PS2 games ; see also Starfighter , The Bouncer , and Z.O.E . ) and pretty darn easy . It is also very hard to overlook the ABSOLUTELY AWFUL dubbing . It REALLY is THAT horrible ( so bad , in fact , this game probably deserves a three instead of a four ; but I'm willing to overlook it with all the good the game has to offer ) ! I'm not sure if Capcom did this on purpose to sort of lampoon bad movie dubs , but it is SO distracting that it ruins many of the cinemas . It's a shame , too , because the voice acting isn't terrible ( though it's no Metal Gear Solid ) . In the end , Onimusha is fun . You'll enjoy hacking Zombie infantry men to pieces with the several weapons at your disposal ( four swords , two of which can be upgraded , a double bladed bow , two daggers , throwing knives , the other kind of bow , and a rather awsome rifle ) and the puzzles are designed to be clever without making you run back to the beginning of the game to find a gear or a key . But , keep in mind , it is way too short ( and easy ) and the Resident Evil riffs ( like playing as both a male and horribly weak female character ) do get a little old . But , man , that opening cinema . . .

  • Warlords is one of the best games on the Playstation 2 Computer Entertainment System . Like any other game , it has a couple of flaws , but that's not out of the ordinary . It really warms me to see what the PS2 is actually capable of , this game has amazing graphics , smooth control , a great storyline , and to top that off all of this running at a smooth 60 fps . You could say that this game is kind of like the past Resident Evils but , in reality it's a much much better game , although being a bit short the game makes up for itself by it's amazing graphics , gameplay , and storyline . Sure it doesn't have TOO deep of a story-line but the details and gameplay really make it worth while . The main conflict of the story is a princess has been kidnapped and the hero of the game , Samanosuke ( a samaruai warrior ) , is called in to rescue Princess Yuki . Samanosuke , brings another character with him by the name of , Kaede . During certain parts of Onimusha you will switch off between these two characters to follow out the story , much like in the past Resident Evil games . When they arive at Nobunaga's castle they find the situation is far more critical then they had ever imagined , you'll have to fight more then your basic share of zombie like demons , and demon bosses . The bosses are worthy of the word boss it might take you a couple of tries on some of the harder bosses closer to the end of the game if you're not a fan of the survival horror genre , but they aren't impossible to defeat . Just the way it's supposed to be . The only way Samanosuke will be powerful enough to defeat this army of demons is to equip the gauntlet of the ogres , a soul-absorbing device that fits on Samanosuke's arm . all-in-all I give Onimusha : Warlords a 5 out of 5 star rating . Once again , this is definitly one of the best games yet on PS2 . Which isn't saying a whole lot considering the very low number of quality games the Playstation 2 has to offer at this time , but if you want your money's worth go get this game , I have a gut feeling that you'll be satisfied .

    • 052 4  I bought this game about a week ago . I work 2 jobs and go to school . I've played it on 3 different occasions . I beat it tonight ( the 3rd time playing the game ) . It sucks you in , so much that I skipped one of my classes . The graphics are incredible , and there's nothing like hacking up demons with some sweet weapons . There is strategy and thinking involved which makes the game interesting . The story line is fairly typical , but it still felt like a new experience . The graphics , the detail in the swords and the characters is amazing . I can't wait until part 2 comes out ( which it obviously will according to the end of the game ) . The last guy is pretty hard . I think I went through the game too fast though and didn't get one of the weapons I was supposed to get . I know that I actually skipped one whole section . I gave it 4 stars as well because of the length . I was hoping that I had only made it half way when I beat the game . It was kind of a suprise to see the credits rolling . Overall however , it was very worth my money . I am going to play it a few more times to try to get everything . The weapon you get when you beat the dragon is pretty freakin awesome . Hopefully they will start the second game off with that weapon . Buy the game . You'll love it .
    • 083 4  If you're the kinda person that loves to start and beat a game in less than a day , this game is for you . for the rest of you who like to spend hours figuring out puzzles and other stuff , this game is still for you , but not so much in the time department . It took me 6 hours to beat this game with no game guide , which to me is just not long enough . the cinematics are incredible for one of the first PS2 games in the library . Vioces , mouth movement , demons and everything else in this game ( except for the playing time ) makes it worth the buy .
    • 092 4  The fist game in a long time to have me drooling over it's graphics . The first of a small handful of PS2 games that genuinely look good . The voice acting is a bit too quiet though , and if you're dumb like me and turn the subtitles off you miss a lot of the dialogue . The overall story , however , is great . I rather enjoyed the way the story tried to tie into real Japanese history the way that White Wolf games try to tie the World of Darkness into our own creating a somewhat believeable horror story . The best part of this game , however , is it's fully orchistrated sound track , simply put it's one of the most amazing soundtracks ever written for a game . The puzzels and fetch quests are managable and you will not likely need a strategy guide for this game , not that it's easy , but if you take a few minutes to stop and think about what you're doing you can figure it all out on your own , which is nice . You feel so much smarter when you figure a game like this out on your own . For it's merrits , there are however some major flaws . The control scheme , once again Capcom refused to abandon the archaic Resident Evil style controls , which makes combat a little more difficult than it needed to be , but thankfully once you adjust to the agonizing control mechanics and build up your weapons and learn the magic spells and special moves it becomes easier , plus you can block and perry which is helpful . Devil May Cry is much better , but this was a good prelude . The game was also the first in what seems to be a trend in hotly anticipated titles that present a strong story , great graphics , great sound , but can be beaten in less than six hours , and is just flat out too short , way too short . I clocked in at about 2 and a half hours . I'd like developers to start making longer games again . Here's hoping for a longer sequel , and one that will play less like Resident Evil , and more like Devil May Cry .
    • 113 4  Onimusha Warlords , to me , was like playing through a movie . As Samanosuke and Kaede , you fight in medieval Japan , battling various demons and creatures while searching for the captured Princess Yuki . Though the game has several key weaknesses , it is still one of the best releases for Playstation 2 . The overall gameplay is not bad at all - it's a thrill wielding the different swords and using awesome moves while cutting through demons , and sucking up their souls with the Gauntlet . The storyline and different characters you meet are also very entertaining , and the music is pretty good . However , despite all that , I was disappointed by the length of the game . After defeating the final boss , I was just begging for more . Additional storyline shoud've been put into Onimusha . Controls are very easy , and one word can describe the graphics : BEAUTIFUL ! The amount of detail put into the background scenery and characters is amazing , and the lighting is stellar . The movie scenes you see at certain points in the game are superb , almost as if real actors and sets were used . The problem , however , is that you can't skip through the movie scenes . I was extremely frustrated by this - depending on when you save , you might be forced to watch a scene several times before you're able to progress through the game , especially after you died fighting a boss . Another annoying feature of Onimusha is the different camera angles . Sometimes , I would get hit by something , and I wouldn't even be able to see it . Camera angles are very irritating when you're trying to defend yourself , especially in the Realm . Despite those problems , Onimusha Warlords is still one of the top games released for Playstation 2 . It is a very fun game to play , and though you may be disappointed by some aspects of it , you should still enjoy the overall gameplay .
    • 131 4  Samanosuke ! ! You'll be screaming that too once you play this game . The opening scene is graphically amazing and the rest of the game has amazing graphics too . The game play is a little tough ( You have to push up to go forward no matter which way you're facing ) but other than that I can't complain . It's pretty bloody too , with a great stab move when the enemy is on the ground . All in all , I good game to buy .
    • 135 4  Capcom did a great job putting this game together . I loved not having to run away from enemies so I could hold on to ammunition as in Resident Evil . That made the game a heck of a lot more fun in my opinion ; you could go after every bad guy in the game . In addition the game is incredibly polished and holds your attention throughout . However because of the game's short length and no major goodies ( except for the mini-game , which is original ) after you beat it , it is difficult to give this game five stars . If you're not thinking about buying it , rent it and you can probably beat it over the weekend if you play enough .
