I know some think that a love story in MGS is a bad idea , but personally it is true at any time , any place people can fall in love . Remember that too , because its true . The bad things ? Well , the torture event is a little extreme , especially on HARD and EXTREME . Your thumb or index finger ( whichever one you use ) has to hit circle repeaditly and that gets tedious , not to mention that your had will get tired . My advice , get a turbo controller for that . One more note . Some of you think that watching the movies is dumb but that ain't true . I've grown used to these games mainly because I have a lot of patience and enjoy a good storyline . ( That's what reading over 1000 hours of dialouge from an RPG will do to you ) Another good is the game modes . You notice more a difference than in the 2nd one . Mainly because the game modes are actually HARDER than the previous one . There are also two endings to enjoy and it does have an effect on the replay value . OVERALL : This game is a real treat and has a lot going for it . It'll take you about 6 - 10 hours your first time through , but it has good replay factor giving it more props .
• 016 4  Ok , I have always considered this game as THE best game I have ever played and haven't posted a review but why now ? I recently have purchased and finished Metal Gear Solid 2 . I had such a high expectation for the sequel because the first one was such a GREAT game . When there were hypes and information of MGS , i wasn't interested in it at all because i'm a old schooler , just into 2D games . However , when i had a chance to play a demo at Toy'R'Us , i knew i had to get this game for no matter what . So i ended up getting it the day it came out and was so amazed at the masterpiece . Story line , game play , graphic , music , and fun factor . . all A-rated . The graphic was the best from that time where everything's based with color green . The amount of detail was almost insane to the point where you can literally see mice running around . The appearance of night vision / thermo goggle gave a whole new look . The music was there to really raise this game to another height because the strongest point of this game is its story line , presented through cut scenes . When these emotional / shocking cut scenes are coupled with A-rated music , it really brings out the emotion and shock very effectively . It really brought vibration function to a new standard and believe me , time to time it makes fun out of itself for being a game , which didn't kill the game but rather added more spice to the game . Each character , whether pro / antagonist , there were strong character development though it might be a short cut scene . However , it was more than GOOD enough , you could literally be sympathic with the characters . Still , my favorite character Psycho Mantis , , oh man , , you just gotta play and see , , it feels nice , , The biggest difference between this game and the second one is that the first one knew when and where to put the cut scenes . The first one was very controlled yet it was just right for the gamers to really appreciate the story flow , whereas in the second one , it's just wasted use of ineffective cut scenes here and there , not to mention ridiculous codec dialogues ( which literally not only stop from continuing its legacy , but killed it ) . Another biggest difference has to be the ending . The ending for the first one was really , REALLY rewarding , i absolutely had this sense of ' fulfilled , completed , satisfied , reward ' You will know what i mean . The second one , umm , , , no comment . Well , what can i say , , i could find no flaws from this very game ( well , there's no such thing as ' perfect ' game , there were little bit of flaw with A.I . , but trust me , it's really nothing when you are being overwhelmed by this game ) . It's like in a movie when the phsyco is fataly wounded ( IN THIS GAME IT TAKES 50 CLIPS TO GET THEM THAT WAY ) they start talking about how their parents abused them , something like that . If a locker is shut what the hell shoot or punch it open ! The graphics are outstanding and the missions are clear-cut and while challenging , they are not impossible . There is nothing worse than a game that is so difficult , you end up throwing your controller down in disgust . The character voice acting is top-notch , unlike most games that are available ( like the Resident Evil Series ) and you will find yourself sucked in almost immediately . While the plot / storyline of the game is not exactly original , the game is so exceptional that you won't even notice . The controls are simple to use and its not just a shoot-everyone-in-sight kind of game , you have to use stealth and agility to solve alot of the missions . I highly recommend this game to anyone that enjoys action / RPG games . This one's a keeper .

• 022 4  I remember first hearing about this game back in 1997 , when I browsed through an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly back in June of 1997 . As a kid , I recalled how I used to have a blast playing the original Metal Gear for the NES , back in the late 1980 ' s . For its time , Metal Gear was one of the most graphically stunning games during the height of the NES's success . And while the game never recieved the marketing push that it should have garnered , its revolutionary stealth elements , which were employed into the gameplay compensated for the lack of marketing . The game was truly groundbreaking for its time , both in quality and concept . The game enjoyed limited success here in the states , and even spawned a sequel overseas . A jump to the next platform hardware system should have been the next obvious move . But oddly enough , the Metal Gear franchise never made it on either the Sega Genesis , nor the Super Nintendo Entertainment System . After seeing the snapshots of Metal Gear Solid , I expected at best , an opportunity to catch up on nostalgia , and to enjoy a revised version of the series , through the Playstation's superior ( for its time ) graphic engine . Not only was the gameplay in Metal Gear Solid faithful to the play mechanics of the NES version , it also offered one of the most cinematic presentations I had ever seen in a videogame . As an old-school gamer , I did experience a jolt of nostalgia or two , as I recognized classic elements of the series being represented in 32 - bit glory . While most critics have argued that the cinematics have detracted from the overall quality of the game , I would argue that the storytelling elements and cinematics have given the game its trademark appeal , offering a unique gaming experience which hasn't been duplicated since . At even this stage in the videogame industry , with the emergence of next generation gaming consoles , and PC hardware , I have not seen any game that has successfully duplicated the storytelling formula in Metal Gear Solid . . . . .
• 035 4  Too this day I have never found a greater game than MGS from the first time I played it in 98 nothing can top it and I dont think anything will . Its rare that this game had sucha movie like quality and I think thats why I love it so much . They dont make games like this anymore the sequels were nothing compared to this ( although I Enjoyed them ) . Besides all the action in the game I think its the cutscenes that will get you . Playing the game now I get a more classic feel to it , but its Hard to believe this game was made 8 years ago and still holds up the same from the first time you go through it . The first time I played it , I was amazed ( and dead in a few minutes . ) It has awesome graphics , and cool , right out of the movies cinematics . And did I mention the storyline ? It's full of unexpected twists and is very well written . It could pass as a interactive movie on your PSX . The AI is top notch , the weapons and their effects are realistic . You can even smoke cigarettes . Being an RPGer , it seemed a little short , but playing it over again gives you extras like invisibility and infinite ammo , and gives you a code-rank to tell you how good a player you are . Try to get the Fox code name .
• 213 4  This is probably one of the best PlayStation One games there is . This has the best storyline of all , again the characters are cool , the music is okay , and the action kind of blows . What I mean is that unlike MGS2 , you can't switch to first-person mode and use your gun , and Revolver Ocelot is kind of lame to fight ( chasing someone in circles is not my idea of an exciting gunfight . ) and you can't zoom in or out when using the sniper rifle , also can't use it while standing . Still , it is a good game , but the sequel is better . Not a bad game , but could have been improved .

MGS is one of those games that comes along once every console , where the developers , producers and screen writers all seem to be on the same page , and create a master-piece . This game was revolutionary , in the sense that it focused more on the concept of espionage , rather than the usual run n gun . I played this game back in 1998 , when it was first released , and have been following the game ever since . This game made my jaw drop with the graphics it pushed out of the ps1 , and the storyline is amazing . Theres love , hate , plot twists , dual endings and so much more that combine to make this game great . One thing I remember is the battle with Psycho Mantis ; ( a crazy military psychic ) who knew every move you were going to do before you did it . At one point he tells you to put the controller down to see his true power and with a hardy yell , my controller vibrated right off the coffee table ! Of course it was the rumble feature , but how unique is that ? We were all tripped out on the greatness of this game , and the intelligence put into the storyline . This game is by far the best game on the ps1 , and if you havent played it yet , now its not too late . Get it , play it , and then buy the others for the PS2 , Metal Gear - Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear - Snake Eater . If you got a PS3 be on the look out for Guns of the Patriots coming out on March 1 2008 , its going to be amazing .

You can tell Konami spent a long time with every possible detail . Now , the story : You are Snake , a elite soldier . ( Pretty basic . ) You have been sent to a Nuclear Weopons Disposel Facility that has been taken over by terrorists . If their demands are not met , they will lanch a nuke . ( Bacic as well . But what MGS does is plays this plot out perfectly ) Your mission is to find out if the terrorists have nuclear launch capability . And if they do , stop them . There are also two hostages you must rescue . You carry a walkie talkie-type thing called a codec . With this , you can keep in touch with a vast number of characters . As you progress through the game , you battle cool bosses and find out everything is not what it appears to be . Prepare to be decieved and betrayed . The game contains many subplots giving you a movie-like feel to the game . Now for statistics ( out of ten ) . Graphics : 9 overall very good , but just a few glitches like arms not entirely attaching to sholders.Sound : 10 the game's strongest point . Everything from footsteps to dialoge is excellent . Beautiful music rounds out this category . Control : 9.5 Everything in this game is easy accessable and simple to find . Aiming is excellent and items such as binoculars are easy to use . Enjoyability : 10 Through this entire game your heart will be pounding just to see what happens next . Not just an action game , Metal Gear Solid is truly the best Playstation has to offer .

They knock out Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy 7 in one shot . The sound is fantastic . It is voice animated brilliantly and you really fell like it is real ! The real thing I admired about this game however , was the storyline . It was complicated and slightly unrealistic but it makes you go through a series of emotions . You start the game as Solid Snake who is trying to stop a terrorist group called Fox Hound from destroying the world with an awesome nucleur weapon called Metal Gear . Fox Hound is led by Liquid Snake who turns out to be Solid Snake's evil brother . Solid Snake is attacked by thousands of genome soldiers who have been hypnotised into following orders by a psychic member of Fox Hound called Psycho Mantis . In the game , Solid has to fight ten bosses which include Psycho Mantis , Revolver Ocelot ( good as his name ) and the massive structure of Metal Gear controlled by Liquid Snake himself.Snake also meets a girl who he sort of falls in love with . Unfortunately she gets shot and Snake is devestated . At one point you get tortured . If you resist it then you save the girl . If you pull out then the girl dies . Metal Gear Solid is a thrilling game which should not be judged by it's demo which is not really as good as the rest . I reccommend this game to any age group above ten years old !

Solid Snake an operative of the governments secert unit FOXHOUND is called out of retimerment to deal with a new threat . Terrioist have sized Shaddow Mosses Island , site of a nuclear weapons disposal site . Worse still the terrioits are members of FOXHOUND , Snake's former unit . This team of elite and deadly soldiers now threatens the world with a nuclear strike . And it is up to Snake to stop them . Who must deal with sentries , tanks , helicopters and the fact his own CO might be lying with him . This is the first game that engrossed me . The first time I played this type of game and loved it . The story was rich and worthy of a movie . The gameplay is the right blend of action and stealth . BUY THIS GAME AND PLAY IT ON EXTREME FOR THE ULITAME CHALLENGE !
• 101 4  It is undeniable that MGS has hands down the best 3D graphics I have seen for the PSX . The polygonal backgrounds are excellently rendered and the use of a standard eagle's-eye camera angle never confuses the player . The static settings of Resident Evil and Final Fantasy just look cheap by comparison . The voice-acting is done by experienced thesbians ( Jimmy Flinders from Akira and Ninja Turtles is particularly recognizable ) and they keep the endless cinemas from becoming boring . Unfortunately , I just cannot give the same accolades to the story . It's kind of like a Spiderman or X-men yarn . On the first disk , it is focused on a joint project between the U.S government and a profit-minded corporation to test a prototype nuclear weapon . Of course , terrorists capture this weapon and that's where you come in . A masochist ninja and a mysterious informant provide intriguing sub-plots . Then by the second disk , things quickly spin out of control with numerous double-crosses , genetic engineering , and a programmable virus that kills specific people . There is one particular twist before the final showdown with Metal Gear that is completely absurd and unbelievable though I won't spoil it . If this game was an RPG , an epic storyline like this would be appropriate but Snake's mission takes place on an island facility with only 4 buildings ! I just couldn't help but get the feeling that the writer was desperately trying to impress me with his talent rather than just make a plausible story .
• 144 4  I played this game when it first came out in 1998 and now over two decades later i can still say that it is the best game i have ever played . Definitely the best series ever . Why ? do you ask . On top of having great action and gameplay , it has INTENSE cutscenes that are still up to today's standards , ( considering the somewhat lower detail due to it being a playstation one game ) and what's more it delves much deeper than just what you see , there are many ideals and themes of morality that are very prevalent and lend to the other games quite nicely . If you ask me what my favorite metal gear game is , this would be number one , and every other metal gear game would tie at number two . ( It's much too difficult to pick between any of them ) Bottom line great midpoint for Snakes story which is arguably the best place to start the series . Unstead of being James Bond running around with hundreds of guns blowing away guards , you are Soid Snake that has to find his own weapons to help his chantses to survive . If you submit , you will start with stealth camo if you use the same file . If you don't submit , you get the bandana which alows inf . ammo on any weapon . Submiting also leads to the saddest ending . ) I have so much I could tell you about the game , but overall , somewhere in between the C - 4 ' s you blow people up with and the sneaking around , you realize that this is the best game ever made for the PS1 and posibly any other system . MGS2 - Sons of Liberty is pretty cool too , but this review is for MGS1 , so I won't ruine anything about MGS2 . One drawback is that you only start with scope and cigs . No weps . No nothin ' . This game combines challeging gameplay with a deep story and excellent voice acting . The game is action packed and the story twists and turns leading to the final climactic battle between Solid Snake and his evil twin brother , who has manned the terrible weapon Metal Gear , a giant battle robot . Add to this some of the best graphics available to the Playstation , and you have a near perfect game .

And for all those people that don't like mindless shoot-em-ups , well there's a really cool , deep , and twisty storyline , almost as good as one from the final fantays games . So while most reviews end with if you liked blah , then buy blah , this review ends with I dont care who you are , but buy this game if you own a PC or Playstation .

Extremely intense action and storyline filled with plot twists , double crosses , gut wrenching violence , cool weaponry , and bits of not-so-obvious campy humor , this was the ultimate espionage mission game , and it set the tone and standard for all other such games since . The beautifully detailed and distinctive looking backgrounds had such an incredible 3d photo realism and depth to them , you feel you are actually there . The characters ' ability to fully interact with the environment further added to the nail biting realism of the game ( like the ability to tap on walls to get a guard's attention , seeing characters ' breath in the cold , leaving footprints in the snow ) . Your enemies almost seem to be able to think ( they even yawn and go to the bathroom ! ) . Now that's really amazing , far better than those typically mindless opponents you faced in other video games ! The game playing with all the different controls get some getting used to , but once you get past that stage , you'll be fine . My only complaint about this game is that during the animated story sequences , the CGIs looked crude and not as refined and smooth as many of the other CGIs that were available even then . I found that to be a bit odd , though they have since corrected that on the new MGS 2 : SOL . Overall , MGS is da bomb ! ! ! !

The puzzle and bosses on this game were very different and possessed depth of character . Some parts of the game were frustrating particularly fighting Metal Gear Rex at the end of th game , also the torture scene was pretty hard too . But I can't wait to see Metal Gear Solid : Sons of Liberty come out this year . I know it will be one of the best and highest selling games of all time regardless of the videogame platform . This is definitely an innovative and original game that sets new standards for others of this type . Buy it and you will see what I am talking about .

With little if any music , you can hear every little sound , every little muttering of a guard . It's strange that guards that are a way off don't hear your gun , because they usually hear you stepping through a puddle . The suspense comes when you've officially alerted the guards . The radar that tells you which direction the guards are facing is blocked out by a timer , and red lights flash as a klaxon blares in the snowy night . In that 100 - second period , you must find a hiding place and hope - - no , pray - - that no guards come . If a guard is alerted , the timer resets . In all , it's very exciting . It might be noted that there are a lot of lewd jokes in here , but they're funny . The graphics are decent , for the PS1 , but don't expect top-of-the-line stuff . This is a great game . . . . P.S . Charging into a room is a very bad idea , since about eight ( or less ! ) shots will kill you . Luckily , you'll only resume at the room in which you started a certain segment .

MGS is all about sneaking around , if you get caught its better to use a stun grenade and run in the earlier parts of the game cause you will die fast ! The learning curve isn't too bad , The first boss can be a bit hard , but after that its smooth sailing till near the end . Graphics are nothing to write home about today , but back in 1998 it was cutting edge ( like today's MGS 4 ) But if your reading reviews then you know what to expect . . . I found myself trying to get through the infuriating torture scene when you have to hammer the O button unfairly fast just to save Meryl . * SPOILER * I've also played the ending where you find Meryl dead , and it's just really upseting . There are also tons of cool items like the thermal goggles , rations , bandanna , cigarettes ( you can smoke ' em ) , gas mask , and the ultimate one : STEALTH CLOAK ( makes you invisible ) . The stealth cloak is hard to get without a gameshark so I'd advise you to get one if you want the best out of the game . And if you have the stealth cloak and get to the NDF ( nuclear dissposal facility ) go to the bathroom the use the stealth cloak . Wait for a guard to walk in and start peeing . Plant C4 under him and bye bye .

• Metal Gear Solid ( Video Game ) metal gear solid creator Hideo Kojima is truly a genious in knowing how to wow people . the first time i saw this game was on a demo disc and it was in Japanese , which is always cool , and after just watching the into movie , i could tell that this was unlike any other game i have ever played . everything , while outdated in looks , is so realistic . which is maybe why i liked this title so much . that , and the characters are freaking amazing . Solid Snake is my hero , and i wish he were a real person so i could meet him and get a picture of him a cardboard box . this is another reason why i like the game and the rest of the series , the humor . while funny , most of it still has a point . sure , it's funny to see a guy sneaking around under a box , but it's also very stealthy and strategic . as long as you don't move while the enemy is watching , you're good to go . using the box is like an ongoing game of red light green light . except in this game you can pop out and break the guy's neck . also , knocking on walls is sometimes funny , but all the time useful . knock on a wall to lure an enemy into a mine you secretly placed near a truck . there are countless ways to enjoy dispatching your enemies , even without the use of weapons . leading them around circles with your footprints in the snow is also humorous . but enough about the comedy , and onto the meat of the game . the story . while not all convoluted ( see also : metal gear solid : sons of liberty . ) , the story still maintains a good conspiracy type theme involving the government and a rebel group of terrorists known as Foxhound . the members of Foxhound are some of the most memorable in videogame history . the first , Revolver Ocelot , a gunsling , six-shooting Soviet that sadly loses a hand during an encounter earlier on in the game . Vulcan Raven , a giant and shaman , he wields a gigantic gatling gun and resides in a warehouse freezer where he talks to his fellow ravens . Sniper Wolf , a sleek and sexy , well , sniper , that has a reputation for always getting her target . Psycho Mantis , a war guinea pig and avid gas mask wearer that also has psychic and telekenetic abilities . the leader of them all is Liquid Snake , Solid Snake's brother . he's pretty much just an arrogant , powerhungry jerk hell bent on world domination / a good end boss to really get the urge to kill . other key players include : the legendary Gray Fox / the ninja / one of the coolest freakin ' creations in all of videogame history . his optic camo and razor sharp katana ( a gun later in the game ) are just too cool . He slices up enemies like they're butter and looks cool as hell doing so . he is by far , next to solid snake , the coolest character ever imagined . but they wouldn't be nearly as cool if it weren't for the story behind it all , which i'm not going to get into , you'll have to buy the game if you want to know more about it . there is also a woman in the game named Meryl , who is an army brat and snake's love interest , kinda . there is also a VR training mission part to the game . it is quite fun , especially if you have a very competitive relationship with a friend or family member that likes games . you can easily lose hours tryin to shave off a tenth of a second off your opponents time . my friend and i would spend entire days just playing the VR missions . after we couldn't beat each other anymore , we called it a tie . there is a technical wizard you can watch go through all the various stages to give you a better idea of how you can get the best possible time . but if you are anywhere near as good as my friend and i got at the stages , this techinical wizard will look extremely slow and stupid . man . . . those where the good old days . and the greatest thing is , you don't unlock a damn thing for beating any of the missions , just more variants of the same , like doing them with weapons , stealth , cardboard box . . . oh well , it's still a great distraction . and it's way better than the VR missions game that game out , but in that you get to be Gray Fox for a couple missions , which is amazing . cloaking and slicing people to ribbons , sign me up ! the cinematics in this game , even by today's standards , are some of the most well crafted to date . enemies are all introduced in an impressive manner and even scenes of pure information and dialogue are fun to watch ( at least the first time ) . the voice acting is superb and the whole thing comes off as something of movie-quality work . this game isn't a classic for no reason . check it out and you'll understand why . and if you can't stand the blocky graphics of the psone , get the re-vamped Metal Gear Solid : The Twin Snakes , for the gamecube . it's the same tale , with some minor added and changed stuff , but nothing major . either way , it's well worth you money , and so cheap for such a masterpiece . no one should be without a copy of this game .

It was not only a good idea , it was the only way to go . You needed to avoid enemies ( as best you could ) to be able to make it through the game . When you killed an enemy , you had to do it in a way that nobody saw you or heard you . Metal Gear Solid is called a Tactical Espionage game , and it means just that . You are a spy and spies should not be seen or heard . Like the other Metal Gear games , you play as Solid Snake ( now the legendary Solid Snake ) . It is your mission to infiltrate the Shadow Moses Island in Alaska , rescue a hostage and see what is going on . From the moment that you begin the game , what you know is being tested and your place in the story is being escalated quickly . You are handed a lot of information about the plot and the reasons behind everything . This game has some very memorable scenes and memorable enemies . Overall , this is one of the best games on the system and I would recommend it to anybody .

As Solid Snake , a lone warrior , you have to single-handedly infiltrate Shadow Moses Island , a base recently taken over by terrorists to develop a nuclear capable walking robot , codenamed Metal Gear Rex . Your job is to make sure Rex never launches by any means necessary . It sounds like a typical third person action game , but there's so much more to this game . First off , the plot is flawless . Hands down the most intricate , well thought out , and moving plot I've seen in any thriller movie ever made . Your main enemy , the enemy most commonly seen in the game , is the Genome soldier . The Genome soldier is a member of a genetically engineered army . If you stay out of sight , you'll never have to have a physical encounter with one of these guys . However , the boss fights cannot be avoided , and thus , it's a darn good thing they're so enjoyable . Bosses range from normal human beings with dreams of revenge to individuals with slightly supernatural powers , which adds an interesting twist to the game . Every boss is fighting for their own perosnal reasons , and their own motives . The game will take roughly twelve hours to complete the first run through without a strategy guide . I advise you to listen to all the Codec conversations and watch all the cinematics because this is where the game truly shines . It's story . With six times the lenght of the average Hollywood thriller , the story is developed much more , and the characters are fleshed out far better than in any film I can think of . This game has my highest recommendation .

It was complicated and slightly unrealistic but it makes you go through a series of emotions . You start the game as Solid Snake who is trying to stop a terrorist group called Fox Hound from destroying the world with an awesome nucleur weapon called Metal Gear . Fox Hound is led by Liquid Snake who turns out to be Solid Snake's evil brother . Solid Snake is attacked by thousands of genome soldiers who have been hypnotised into following orders by a psychic member of Fox Hound called Psycho Mantis . In the game , Solid has to fight ten bosses which include Psycho Mantis , Revolver Ocelot ( good as his name ) and the massive structure of Metal Gear controlled by Liquid Snake himself.Snake also meets a girl who he sort of falls in love with . Unfortunately she gets shot and Snake is devestated . At one point you get tortured . If you resist it then you save the girl . If you pull out then the girl dies . Metal Gear Solid is a thrilling game which should not be judged by it's demo which is not really as good as the rest . I reccommend this game to any age group above ten years old !

Metal Gear . Although this game may seem too hard for even a seasoned gamer , that's because they're approching the game the wrong way . You can't expect to go the whole game without getting caught by a guard or without not quite knowing what to do . That's where this game's real beauty kicks in . The cut-scenes , taken right from the in-game engine , work flawlessly with gameplay to give the feeling of playing a movie more than a game . The player MUST use stealth tactics , or he / she won't survive the first level , which is ( believe it or not ) the easiest one . The game gets progressively harder , but you never get discouraged enough to just give up . It keeps bringing you back for more . There are weapons a-plenty , and just because you won't be using them much ( if you're smart , ) you better get anything you can . hint : chaff grenades are REALLY handy against certain bosses , like Ninja and Vulcan Raven's tank . If you don't like using your head , you won't like this game . One last tip : the CODEC system used to communicate with others is a valuable too against bosses . Use it whenever you don't know what to do . RATINGS ( 1 - 5 ) Graphics : 5 - truly remarkable . You can even see Snake's breath when it's cold in a certain area ! Sound : 5 - all the sounds are in there , and the noise you make also affects whether you get caught or not . Control : 5 - superb . Snake handles like a well-oiled . . . something . But you aren't alone . There are two people who are physcially there for you . One is Meryl , a red-headed babe who just so happens to be your colonel's neice . Then there is Hal Emmerich , also known as Otacon . This geeky hacker gets you out of a ton of sticky situations in this game . Even though they aren't actually there , the people you contact by Codec help you out bunches . The colonel , despite being quite shady , gives you a plethora of tips to get you out of bad spots . Mei Ling , a cute little Chinese girl , saves your game and fills your mind with interesting proverbs . Master McMiller is an interesting old friends of Snake's who knows a lot of about the Alaskan wildlife and wilderness . Then there is Deepthroat . This guy is quite mysterious , but very helpful . Oh , and Naomi . This sexy and sophisticated scientist is the reason for the technology that is keeping you warm in the cold climate of Alaska . The things I've mentioned don't even scratch the surface of MGS's story , characters , and twists . Don't trust anybody . That is my best advice . Gameplay ? Amazing . You'll get use to the layout of the controls very quickly . Soon , you'll be quick reloding and popping around corners like a pro . I'll be the first to admit that Metal Gear Solid is short . Skipping cut scenes , I can be the game in about 2 and a half hours now . When you are spotted , enemies will storm in from all directions to stop you , something that seperates this game from all others . This game gives you good reason to want to play it safe , but still allows you you have some action packed fun as well , if you want to take a chance that is . Also , this game has an incredible storyline but doesn't throw it in your face all the time . MGS2 drags the storyline on eccesively and bores you with excruciatingly long cut scenes and codec conversations . I remember using the square button to skip most of the cut scenes in MGS2 . The problem with MG2 is that the storyline is too complex for the good of the game . I mean , much of it is pointless grubble and the game bores you by making you listen to conversations about crap that doesn't apply necessarily to the main storyline , making it a waste of time . This game , however , truly has a wonderful , complex storyline that you will WANT to watch and listen to . Every conversation and cut scene adds to the game flawlessly , so you will probably never get bored , although I am sure you will find yourself reading the codec conversations manually instead of listening to the people talk , since they tend to talk rather slowly and take up a bit too much gameplay . • 044 4  All right , I am just going to let it out : THIS GAME ROCKS ! There is a great plot behind it , great action , and some romance to top it all off . I was just plain SCARED when Meryl was all hitting on snake like some drunkard like quick ! make love to me ! oh I love you ! graphics-eww . I don't think the characters even have a face . My friend zoomed in on Meryl and her eyes were like big dark pits of doom ( scream music plays and it zooms in on snake's face one frame at a time ) . although the graphics are horrible in the game , you can at least see all of the details on their face during codec transmissions . i didn't even know Meryl had red hair until i saw her in person . plot-excellent . it is kind of deep and all , but at least it has a thick one , unlike some ridiculous games like digimon world 3 and other cheesy games that were based on anime for 5 yr olds , lol ) music-you can just here the wonderful harmony of the bass instruments and the choir . together it makes a dark , deep tone , yet pleasing to the ear . I especially like the ending song when you beat it ( which I have had to sit through three long times ) . It sounds like celtic music . It is just so long and you can't skip it . ( note : I have beat the game twice , except I accidentally hit x instead of circle when it says do you want to save this , so i had to beat liquid again ) . voice acting-the voice acting is great . snake's voice was well selected . meryl sounds a little young though , as do all girls than normally come from japanese anime or video games when an english voice actor is selected for them ) controls-whew . They are unusual , since most games have x as your weapon button , instead of square . The controls also cost me to have to fight liquid more times than needed . Yet the fact that they are different makes it harder to adapt to it , which is exciting . battles-the boss fights are suprisingly enjoyable . When you are new to the game , the easy ones always get you , but after you have beaten them once or twice , they are a piece of cake ( when I fought Metal Gear Rex for the first time , it was easy until the second part whereas I lost about 8 times , but when I fought him after getting stealth , I beat him on the first try ! ) . The enjoyable fights are : Cyborg Ninja ( Gray Fox ) Psycho Mantis The Hind-D Liquid Snake The easy ones are : Psycho Mantis M1 Tank Revolver Ocelot ( I beat him in under a minute , serious ) Sniper Wolf ( both times , except it is kinda hard to find her in the snowfield ) The just plain annoying fights ( and other parts ) are : The Hind-D Ocelot's Torture ( when you are trying to beat it . I did the ketchup thing and it didn't work once ) Metal Gear Rex ( sorta ) Gray Fox ( he turns invisible , which is annoying if you don't have thermal goggles ) last , but CERTAINLY not least , Liquid Snake ( you have to fight him with your bare hands , plus you have to beat him in under 3 minutes , and he rams you alot ) overall rating - 4 out of five . the graphics cost it the 5 . it seems to me like they were in a hurry and just slapped it in . highlights : funny and wierd-when meryl was hittin on snake , as i listed above ( that goes under the wierd things category ) , and when you begin the fight with Psycho Mantis and he tells you to set your controller on the floor and he telepathically moves it . that was a real joke . Rated M for Mature-violence , language , somewhat sexual related material ( not nudity , just meryl hitting on snake and other things , such as Colonel Cambell having a kid with his dead brother's wife ( Meryl ) , but he thought he was her uncle and finds out at the end of the game he is her father , parents , no need to be alarmed ) , and a little bit of blood , and you cannot even see it because of the many objects surrounding you . might see a drop , but not not anything serious . Plus the most terrifying thing in the game : Solid Snake is cool and all , but at the end of the game , the most terrifying happens : SNAKE REVEALS HIS REAL NAME ! Boy is it mundane , his name is . . . is . . . ( twitch cringe ) DAVID !
• 047 4  Back when MGS came out for the PSone , I was still stuck in my N64 mode . I thought that no game could surpass anything ever made on the Nintendo 64 , and I thought that the Playstation was a joke . Man , was I wrong . MGS is , without a doubt , the best game I have ever played , and one of the best video games ever created . As Solid Snake , you must infiltrate a nuclear storage base in Alaska and stop a group of terrorists ( your former unit ) from unleashing nuclear weapons on the world . What you find out when you go deeper into the base is that your worst nightmare is back : Metal Gear . Code-named Metal Gear Rex , this three-story tall monstrosity is , in essence , a walking battletank with the ability to launch a nuclear warhead from anywhere in the world . Since I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone , I will say simply this ; this game has the best plotline of any game I have ever played . It is a smart , stylish story conveyed through wonderful cutscenes . It will have you playing all the way through just to see what happens to Solid Snake , and to see the great cut scenes . This game has everything , from action , to covert spying , to international espionage , and even romance . The play control and weapon selection for this game are some of the best and the graphics , even in the PS2 era , are amazing and perfectly suited to this game . If you buy this game , you will definitely not be disappointed . Simply put , it is AMAZING , and should not be missed by anyone who even remotely likes video games .

Now , the graphics have improved and so the game has a real feel to it , and you're silenced pistol is your best friend . There are two secret items in the game . • 064 4  This review is from : Metal Gear Solid ( Video Game ) In light of PS3 releasing an update that will allow upscaling of PS1 and PS2 games to 1080p , I feel compelled to revisit some of the games that made me a solid sony fan . MGS is one of those games that comes along once every console , where the developers , producers and screen writers all seem to be on the same page , and create a master-piece . This game was revolutionary , in the sense that it focused more on the concept of espionage , rather than the usual run n gun . I played this game back in 1998 , when it was first released , and have been following the game ever since . This game made my jaw drop with the graphics it pushed out of the ps1 , and the storyline is amazing . Theres love , hate , plot twists , dual endings and so much more that combine to make this game great . One thing I remember is the battle with Psycho Mantis ; ( a crazy military psychic ) who knew every move you were going to do before you did it . At one point he tells you to put the controller down to see his true power and with a hardy yell , my controller vibrated right off the coffee table ! Of course it was the rumble feature , but how unique is that ? We were all tripped out on the greatness of this game , and the intelligence put into the storyline . This game is by far the best game on the ps1 , and if you havent played it yet , now its not too late . Get it , play it , and then buy the others for the PS2 , Metal Gear - Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear - Snake Eater . If you got a PS3 be on the look out for Guns of the Patriots coming out on March 1 2008 , its going to be amazing .

Vulcan Raven , a giant and shaman , he wields a gigantic gatling gun and resides in a warehouse freezer where he talks to his fellow ravens . Sniper Wolf , a sleek and sexy , well , sniper , that has a reputation for always getting her target . Psycho Mantis , a war guinea pig and avid gas mask wearer that also has psychic and telekenetic abilities . the leader of them all is Liquid Snake , Solid Snake's brother . he's pretty much just an arrogant , powerhungry jerk hell bent on world domination / a good end boss to really get the urge to kill . other key players include : the legendary Gray Fox / the ninja / one of the coolest freakin ' creations in all of videogame history . his optic camo and razor sharp katana ( a gun later in the game ) are just too cool . He slices up enemies like they're butter and looks cool as hell doing so . he is by far , next to solid snake , the coolest character ever imagined . but they wouldn't be nearly as cool if it weren't for the story behind it all , which i'm not going to get into , you'll have to buy the game if you want to know more about it . there is also a woman in the game named Meryl , who is an army brat and snake's love interest , kinda . there is also a VR training mission part to the game . it is quite fun , especially if you have a very competitive relationship with a friend or family member that likes games . you can easily lose hours tryin to shave off a tenth of a second off your opponents time . my friend and i would spend entire days just playing the VR missions . after we couldn't beat each other anymore , we called it a tie . there is a technical wizard you can watch go through all the various stages to give you a better idea of how you can get the best possible time . but if you are anywhere near as good as my friend and i got at the stages , this techinical wizard will look extremely slow and stupid . man . . . those where the good old days . and the greatest thing is , you don't unlock a damn thing for beating any of the missions , just more variants of the same , like doing them with weapons , stealth , cardboard box . . . oh well , it's still a great distraction . and it's way better than the VR missions game that game out , but in that you get to be Gray Fox for a couple missions , which is amazing . cloaking and slicing people to ribbons , sign me up ! the cinematics in this game , even by today's standards , are some of the most well crafted to date . enemies are all introduced in an impressive manner and even scenes of pure information and dialogue are fun to watch ( at least the first time ) . the voice acting is superb and the whole thing comes off as something of movie-quality work . this game isn't a classic for no reason . check it out and you'll understand why . and if you can't stand the blocky graphics of the psone , get the re-vamped Metal Gear Solid : The Twin Snakes , for the gamecube . it's the same tale , with some minor added and changed stuff , but nothing major . either way , it's well worth you money , and so cheap for such a masterpiece . no one should be without a copy of this game .

• 080 4  I saw the word greatest hits and I was ashamed . Why do they always ruin every game box with that stupid green bar on the left telling people its a greatest hits . Mabye they will make more money , wrong . . . Anyways , the actual game is my 2nd favorite of all time . Not easy to get onto my list but this game does it . I was playing Metal Gear Solid 2 the other day and realized that it can never compare with what this game has achieved . You are Snake , the operative who must go in a nuclear testing facility held by terrorists . Snake goes in by stealth , and must fight numerous villians . All the villians in this game are extremely well done with voice acting and great personalitys . I can't find big complaints at all with the game . The game is so good that they are making the remake for Game Cube , and possibly other systems . Metal Gear Solid : Twin Snakes . Anyways , the game has music that probably for me basically tops final fantasy 7 , just because it is original and fits the mood perfectly . Every character has perfect voice and personalitys , so the voice acting never gets old . I've played the game like 8 times , and I loved it every minute . The bad point is the backtracking , but it is really short and is always for a reason . You backtrack usually with a goal in mind . And you will usually backtrack like a mofo on halloween . Meaning really fast to get your candy . And every time you do it ( like 3 times in the game ) you will get to listen to juicy codec calls that unravel more story bits and liven it up . I love calling Cambell ( who is a great character ) on the codec to see what he has to say . It always seems to be different and intellectual . He can also give you hints , and the other characters on your codec play major roles . The best part about this game is the story . Honestly , RPG's have the best storys , but this game can top almost any rpg in story . We learn about 2 snakes , and how they believe things . Liquid Snake . . . . he talks about being a flawed snake and such , and whenever he talks it's always interesting to the point where I want to hear it every game . With story comes philosophy . This isn't the matrix where we have a man called morpheous talk about philosophy in some crazy underground rave . This is Solid Snake and others being honest . Solid Snake has some of the best views on life . He's like a rebel without a cause . His lines are thought provoking and are probably things that someone could base their life off of . Live life is probably the best message he tells and can give , and this philosophy is rare in video games today . The fighting is cool , and bosses offer challenges and fun . I would reccomend this game to anyone . You will get your moneys worth from this game , and I hope you enjoy it . But one more thing , lets not forget what you must do . Buy the game for playstation not computer . On computer they like changed the skins around or so ive seen in screenshots . Solid Snake looks alot younger , and alot less vigilante like and stuff . You play as Solid Snake , a retired soldier from a mercenary group called Foxhound ( who was ` nt happy by being dragged from his home by armed guards by his old colonel because Snake did ` nt want to do the mission ) . This game has everyhing , Dramatic scenes , a romance , a battle with an invisible ninja , an electrical torture scene , a gun-toting Texan pistol fanatic , a wussy scientist who aids you along the mission , extremely dramatic battles with an M1 tank , a Hind D Helicopter , Metal Gear Rex itself , and a fight to the death with Snake ` s own brother . It also features the unbelievably cool ' Codec ' , in which you can call up your allies anytime for advice , or info on what to do next . This truly is the greatest game ever made , you will love the frozen Alaska location and there are also several cool things like how if surveillance cameras spot you they set off alarms , and you can go up behind guards and break their necks , or drag them around , or knock them out , and there are several scenes where you have to crawl through ventilation ducts . This game has an amazing armoury , from a mere stun grenade to a massive Stinger launcher , the range includes assault rifles , mines , C4 ` s , Chaff grenades ( which make all electric equipment go bust ) , Nikitas ( remote controlled missiles ) , and PSG1 sniper rifles.You also use Rations , which make your health go up , and night vision goggles and thermal goggles . An incredibly cool and dramatic game , this game uses stealth and sneaking , instead of just rushing in , killing everyone , and blowing the place up ( like Duke Nukem or something ) , the games bosses are a great challenge , there is a sniper duel , a fight with an Alaskan muscleman with a big machine gun , a battle with a psychic maniac , and several large skirmishes in very difficult places ( its a great challenge ) . Metal Gear Solid , best game , best characters , most realistic , a really brilliant game .

( Wait until you feel the helicopter taking off , and then wait for Psycho Mantis to prove to you he can make objects move . ) The game eases you into it , and gives you a solid twelve to fifteen hours of gameplay the first time through . But you won't want it to end . I guarantee it . If you haven't bought it already , buy it now . This game would be a bargain at $100 .

Just when you think you know what is going on , something else happens and throws the story in a totally different direction . That is what makes the game so good , the graphics could be worse than they are , and this game would still be amazing . The bosses are challening , and the weapons are helpful to your quest . Whether it is your motion sensing mines , or your c - 4 , which you can plant almost anywhere ( if you are really careful , you can even plant it on the back of guards , and detonate ! ) , there are also many automatic , and semi-automatic to make the game more fun . You can blow away a bad guy with a missle launcher , or you can quietly sneak up and use your sniper rifle to take them out . Anyway you fight , this game is definately a fun and exciting adventure , a definate must !

The polygonal backgrounds are excellently rendered and the use of a standard eagle's-eye camera angle never confuses the player . The static settings of Resident Evil and Final Fantasy just look cheap by comparison . The voice-acting is done by experienced thesbians ( Jimmy Flinders from Akira and Ninja Turtles is particularly recognizable ) and they keep the endless cinemas from becoming boring . Unfortunately , I just cannot give the same accolades to the story . It's kind of like a Spiderman or X-men yarn . On the first disk , it is focused on a joint project between the U.S government and a profit-minded corporation to test a prototype nuclear weapon . Of course , terrorists capture this weapon and that's where you come in . A masochist ninja and a mysterious informant provide intriguing sub-plots . Then by the second disk , things quickly spin out of control with numerous double-crosses , genetic engineering , and a programmable virus that kills specific people . There is one particular twist before the final showdown with Metal Gear that is completely absurd and unbelievable though I won't spoil it . If this game was an RPG , an epic storyline like this would be appropriate but Snake's mission takes place on an island facility with only 4 buildings ! I just couldn't help but get the feeling that the writer was desperately trying to impress me with his talent rather than just make a plausible story .

Unlike the rancid voices in Resident Evil , these voices are well done . Try RE and see if I am lying . . . MGS is a long game , but is highly addicting . This game combines challeging gameplay with a deep story and excellent voice acting . The game is action packed and the story twists and turns leading to the final climactic battle between Solid Snake and his evil twin brother , who has manned the terrible weapon Metal Gear , a giant battle robot . Add to this some of the best graphics available to the Playstation , and you have a near perfect game .

Not prepared that on this day , not only would I pick out a game , but one of the greatest , if not the greatest game ever . I wasn't prepared when I opened that cd and put it into my playstation that I would be glued there for the next 3 days strait . Metal Gear Solid in terms of gameplay , voice actors , fun level , and especially replay value is one of the best games to date . The only games that could match the fun I had playing MGS are Zelda : OOT and Goldeneye and neither had the great storyline that MGS did . First , the gameplay . The GP is some of the most innovative stuff since Mario Bros . - jump on bad guy's head and squash him - but seriously , this is the first game where you actually try to avoid gunfights . You hear ; spy game , action game , you think big guns and blow everything up . Not in MGS , here that'll get you killed quick . Instead , you sneak up behind your enemy and choke him , then break his neck . Why you ask when I have a big gun ? Because if enemies hear your gun they'll come running or if the guard alerts them to you they'll come running and in MGS , even with your big guns you can't fight off hordes of bad guys with equally bigger guns each . So the name of the game is stealth . With bosses it's different , each boss has a different patern and attacking style which you must learn in order to get past them . One boss is a six-gun wearin cowboy who only has six bullets to spare until he reloads , then takes off running . Another rides in a tank , another is a sniper and you must have a sniper dule , another is a huge mammoth of a guy who is a bird lovin ' , big ol ' gatling gun totin ' mean SOB . You have to work you're way through an inricate facility in order to find the hiding place of Metal Gear - the most dangerous weopon known to man . It's a 3 story tall walking battle tank that can fire a nuclear missile strike from anywhere in the world . As Solid Snake , retired member of the elite soldier group known as Fox-Hound . You're brought out of retirement when your old group re-surfaces and takes control of Metal Gear and starts making demands . Your mission is to sneak into the facility and find them , rescue the hostages and stop the nuclear launch , if they can indeed launch . Sounds like your basic spy movie but until you get into the game you have no idea what you're in for . I'm talkin government coverups and conspiracies , enemies among the peaple you trust , and a strange love that blossoms on the battlefield . Believe me , this game has enough action for the action game fan , enough puzzles and things to find for the puzzle fan , and a great story that tops that of best RPGs I've played . This game has something for everyone and everyone who is a true gamer should play this game at least once . I've played and beat it at least 7 times and I'm still not tired of it . The major complaint is that it's too short . Well , if you want to play through it enough to get both endings it should be short . I've even let my family , who knows nothing about video games , watch me play and beat it and even my mom loved it ! Now it must have a good story to impress her ! In closing I'll say this : Metal Gear set a new standard for action / adventure games in the 80 ' s , now , Metal Gear Solid has raised that standard higher than I , for one , thought it could ever be raised . This game is a true classic !

Definitely the best series ever . Why ? do you ask . On top of having great action and gameplay , it has INTENSE cutscenes that are still up to today's standards , ( considering the somewhat lower detail due to it being a playstation one game ) and what's more it delves much deeper than just what you see , there are many ideals and themes of morality that are very prevalent and lend to the other games quite nicely . If you ask me what my favorite metal gear game is , this would be number one , and every other metal gear game would tie at number two . ( It's much too difficult to pick between any of them ) Bottom line great midpoint for Snakes story which is arguably the best place to start the series . Now , ten years later , I manage to get my hands on a used copy here at Amazon ( I spent about $12.00 + 4.00 S & H ) . All I can say is that it's more than worth every penny I spent . Story : Truly exquisite . You play as Solid Snake ( who is perhaps one of the most famous PlayStation game characters if not one of the most famous game characters of all time ) , who is sent to Shadow Moses Island in Alaska to neutralize a terrorist threat ( pretty standard action movie stuff ) . But , the story will continue to throw various plot twists that may seem random at first , but add up in the end ( I'm avoiding the main plot elements just so I don't spoil it for anyone who hasn't played the game yet ) . 10 / 10 . Graphics : For its time , this game had amazing graphics . The only PS1 games I can think of that had better graphics than this game would be the Syphon Filter series . 9 / 10 . Sound : Crisp sound effects ( for it's time ) , wonderfully composed musical score , and outstanding voice acting ( David Hayter was especially good ) . 9.3 / 10 . Metal Gear Solid was quite a fun and intriguing release and it brought a more cinematic telling into the stories and although short and plotwise it can get into philosophy-speak a bit too often ( though at least it's easier to swallow than Sons of Liberty ) , it was still one of the more unique play experiences found on the console . Story : You play as Solid Snake who's sent to Shadow Moses Island in Alaska to rescue DARPA Chief Donald Anderson and ArmsTech President Kenneth Baker as well as stop the terrorist's plans on launching a nuke . But that's just the start of it as we get FOXHOUND members , special elite soldiers who went rogue , a big beast of a machine and Snake's own connection to the leader of the group . Graphics : Since this is the original Playstation , you kind of have to take everything at face value : they look blocky now and lack the clarity of Sons of Liberty or the huge polish of Snake Eater but it was on a lesser console so it makes sense . But at the time it was impressive with lots of cutscenes , done very movie-like and indeed the environments were well handled . Sound / Music : Along with the Lunar series , the MGS series has always been prime examples of how voice acting should be done . Instead of overeager voices or just robotic delivery , it's very easy to get involved with the story when the actors do a great job at balancing the quieter moments with the more plot-based information . The music does a good job as well though it's used rather sparingly . Gameplay : Unlike other games were it's encouraged to go crazy on your enemies , the MGS series rewards stealth and non-killing to progress . Use tranquilizer guns or knock out enemies , the object is to be seen as little as possible . Even then you have a huge assortment of goodies at your disposal that inexplicably can be stored in Snake's tiny pockets . From sniper rifles to 2 different kind of missile launchers , automatics and handguns and goggles , there's plenty to use should you get caught . Aiding your ability to not be seen is the radar where a blue cone represents your enemy's field of vision which you avoid though you can distract them by making noise such as knocking on walls . Cutscenes are well-handled from FMV-types which detail nuclear histories and such while there's others which handle the in-game cinematics like meeting characters . But Snake also talks through the CODEC , a radio and video communication which shows a black screen , text and 2 character portraits and though it's handy to read all the heavy plot scenes , it feels strange for character moments . Get used to that ring too since you'll be hearing it a lot as you play the game . The other negative people might have is its length which doesn't really feel long and it's actually perfectly paced and it doesn't feel like the game got extended just for the sake of adding more stuff to do . Although we have the remake with the Twin Snakes , I felt the original is the best version and while graphically it shows its age , it's still an engrossing playthrough .

• 163 4  I have been a gamer since about Pac-Man , and I have seen the genre of entertainment expand . Metal Gear is one of the most interesting and provocative stories there are . It is a little bit of truth with a healthy dose of fiction . The writers for this game were wonderful , and the characters were believable . Some dialogue was a bit strange , but somehow I think that is due to translation from Japanese into American . The story makes the game . How dull would it be , and useless if you had no plot to these games ? In my opinion , the best games out there are a good mix of story , dialogue , and action . Metal Gear serves this up in quantity . Also , their attempts to get the player involved as if he is Solid is wonderful . Things from Psycho Mantis's powers that he displays , to the stimulating nanomachines ( aka the vibrating controller ) makes the player feel like they are actually apart of the story . Other titles in this series accomplish this very well too , and I do not think enough games incorporate this into their games . Overall I think that this is a great game . Good action , good story , and good puzzles . One of the best treats the Playstation has to offer .
• 169 4  INTRODUCTION : Metal Gear Solid was released in 1998 and it became instantly famous . It's great graphics , ( for the time ) wonderful story , and its fun gameplay made it a hit ! GAMEPLAY : You are Solid Snake , and you have to infiltrate through a huge terrorist base threatening the US for money and Big Boss's remains . You have to be sneaky and stealthy , for if a guard catches you , a hoard of enemies will come and try to find and kill you , so be careful . You will also get some cool weapons , like the Socom , which is a powerful gun , and the Nikita , a remote-controlled missile launcher . Boss fights are fun and unique , from the gun-duel with Revolver Ocelot , to fighting a tank and helicopter on foot , to having a fistfight with a robotic ninja , the bosses are awesome . In the game you will get a camera , which allows you to take pictures and discover ghosts . But you need a block per picture . If you ever get stuck , contact your buddies on Codec , a cool communication system that allows you to talk to people like the General , Mei-Ling , ( who saves your game ) Master , ( who looks like Wesker off Resident Evil ) and more . One more thing , the torture event . You have to tap circle rapidly to restore your health . You can submit , but if you do , Meryl , the hot , tough , woman that Snake loves , dies . Ocelot says if you use auto-fire , he'll know . He's lying . Turbo controllers are safe and are necessary for this part . GRAPHICS : Well , it looks like standard Playstation graphics . Polygonal and grainy . But it was good for the time . MUSIC : The music in the game is very suspenseful and catchy . Especially the boss music . Better than the remake's . SOUND : The voices are very well done , and the sounds are pretty great , too . STORY : The story unfolds through cinema-style cutscenes , ( Which were new for gaming at the time ) and Codec calls . The story is very rich and greatly crafted , if not a bit confusing . OVERALL : One awesome game which is a must have for your collection . Also , get the sequels and the remake , The Twin Snakes . • 179 4  MGS is one of the best psx games ever made . The story is great and uniqe and has Superb voice acting filled with great and detailed cut scenes . I got this game the time it came out and yeah its a little to late to be reviewing this game but what the hell . Metal gear solid is about solid snake who is trying to infaltrate a terrorist base holding a new type of nuklear warheads . METAL GEAR REX . Snake soon finds moor enemies and Allies as this amazing progresses through . I personaly loved every character . My most favorite was Raven . The game is dramatic to the max . But not as dramatic as sons of liberty . Meryl was an awsome character too . Snake has feelings for her but he wont admit it and more complications occur . The game is one of the best games I have ever experienced in my gaming time . The BOSS battles were awsome . The game is one of those games youll remember experiencing and the first time is the best . The characters are all great and the voice acting is not even close to bad . I wont spoil anymore for you but I also recomend getting TWIN SNAKES . I got that game the day it came out and it did not dissapoint even though I found some stuff to be better in the original than TWIN SNAKES . For example : The final conflict between Snake and Ninja / gray fox wasnt as sad as I thought it would be in twin snakes . The speech was more moving in the original . But over all this game is great . And Like I said may be the greatest adventure game ever made .

So here are all the good and mayby even some bad things about the game : Graphics : 7 / 10 Okay , the graphics are nothing to brag about , but this is still a PS one game , so it won't disturb you . But if you are very cautious about what your children play I will just tell you this : This game does get very bloody , and violent , but who cares ? I think it makes it more realistic , and sweeter to the non squeemish eye . Sound : 10 / 10 Right on target voice acting , David Hyter ( Writer of the X-men two screenplay ) plays the perfect Solid Snake , with plenty of grimness in his voice . The gun shots sound great , and there is a big difference when you muffle the noice of you SOCOM pistol with a silencer . Plot : 10 / 10 Brillant . Pure briliant . Ever since this game came out , there has not been a single game that hasn't had at least one mission where you can't kill anyone and have to sneak around . • 196 4  You are Solid Snake master of stealth as you try disarm a nuclear weapon Metal Gear Rex , and also to rescue the DARPA chief and the Armstec president . in the beginning of the game you don't know much as you fight against the genome army . I highly recomend this game . The Storyline is great and you can't take your eyes off the TV ( I wish Books were like that ) The music is awesome and the graphics are great to . the controls are easy after you get used to it , and you'll love your new hero solid snake . A great game [ for the price ] .
• 200 4  I got this game a few years ago and was unsure of it for a while . For me , the controls where kind of hard to figure out since I only had a few other games at the time . I also thought it was hard in general . But then I figured out all the controls , and once I figured out what I was doing , I loved it . The main character who you play as is Solid Snake from the old Nintendo games : Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 . ( Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 are not re-makes of them ) Solid Snake is a tough , ruthless guy who isn't afrid to take someone down . Your arch-nemises is Liquid Snake along with his main henchmen : Revolver Ocelot , Sniper Wolf , Raven , and Psycho Mantis . You can keep in touch with other characters who help you throughout the game on a codec . Two characters that are actually at your side during the game are Meyrl and Otocan . Anyway , the plot is very detailed and there was obviously a lot of thought put into it . The graphics aren't that great now , but at the time I bought it I thought they where pretty good . But it was made a few years ago , so of course the graphics were not as good then . If you had a Nintendo and owned Metal Gear and or Metal Gear 2 , I highly recomend playing this .
• 210 4  Metal Gear Solid was directed by Hideo Kajima [ I think that is how to spell it ? ] He made MGS more of an experience than just a game . You feel like your in the greatest action movie of all time , wile you playing it . I won't spoil anything for you , because the story is a big part in what makes this the best game of all time . As well as an awesome story this game also has realistic characters . Some of witch are freaken cool , Like Liquid Snake , he's sort of Solid Snake's rival , And Raven he  s vary cool . This game invented the Stealth genre , and set a new standard for a gaming experience . If your reading this review with cash in your pocket , and your wondering ' should I buy it ? ' Than you are already missing out on the best game you'll every play . On another note : Metal Gear Solid 2 has come out . And though the game play has improved , MGS2 doesn't quite live up to the first one . The idea of living out the coolest movie ever is lost in the second Metal Gear Solid . Anyway back to MGS . Game play 10 [ Awesome ] Graphics 9 [ Awesome for their time ] Controls 9 [ Complicated until you get used to them ] Fun factor 10 [ Way up their ] Replay ability 10 [ Their are rewards for beating the game with either of the two endings ] I am extremely thankful that this is now on Greatest Hits , becoase my original copy is so over used and beat up that it doesn't work anymore . Besides , Resident Evil 2 was even shorter , but it got nowhere near as many complaints for it . Anyway , MGS is an example of what a great game really is .

• 183 4  This was a decent game . Probably one of the first of its kind , so that gets it major points . It's a little on the short side ( 5 hours total if you watch all the cinematics and take your time ) and the difficulty takes dramatic leaps and falls throughout the game , making adaptation difficult . The graphics are absolutely horrible , but maybe i'm just spoiled by my ps2 . The voice quality isn't bad for a game as old as this one and the moves and strategy you can use are all immensely helpful ( as opposed to some games that give you neat moves that have absolutely no application in the game ) . Very original .

With that said this by far has the best ending out of the 4 of them ( MGS4 comes really close ) Story wise this is also the best of them ( ALL 4 have a good story in there own right ) If you haven't picked this up yet or find the price to be too high for an older game get the MGS : Essential Collection , you get the first 3 MGS's for $30 , but act quick as they do tend to sell out rather fast ! !

I popped in the little demo cd it came with to try some of the games and Metal Gear Solid was one of the demos . . . I quickly came addicted to this game and ran to the store the same day to buy it . I love this game , the graphics are wonderful , the missions are great and the replay value is worth it too . This game just makes you want to keep on playing . True the game was a little short but I have replayed the game four times already and still can't get enough . My only concern is this game is way too graphic for kids . . . All in all I give this game a 10 + and I can't wait for more games to come out like it . . . . syphon filter just isn't as good as MGS .

Although one must bear with the graphics , this game makes the player feel as if they were within the game , as few video games can . It is certainly one of the best games for the playstation , and probably even one of the best games for even the playstation 3 , which is the platform I run it on . It is a game where the player has to solve many puzzles by themselves , with little help , but most of the problems in the game sort themselves out .
