114 4 Great package that contains the whole series stories with the directors cut of the 2nd and 3rd games . Since the first game is very hard to find 10 dollars for it is an amazing price for a new copy . If you have the original games and not the Substance and Subsistence versions of the 2nd and 3rd games , then this is still very worth the price you will pay . This is one of the best exclusive series to the PlayStation brand and is worth every penny if you enjoy a good story and exciting action gameplay . If you are not playing this game on a PS3 you will need a PS1 memory card either for your PS2 or PS1 for Metal Gear Solid . The game won't save onto a PS2 memory card . Obviously you will also need a controller and a PS2 memory card if you are playing on the PS2 system .
006 4 I have been a fan of the MGS series since I bought a Playstation 2 seven years ago . I applaud Konami for releasing this box set . This presents newbies the chance to catch up with the story just in time for the PS3 release of Metal Gear Solid 4 . For $30 this is a steal . All 3 games are well worth the price of admission . You simply can't go wrong with this deal .

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
What you see is what you get - MGS1 for PlayStation 1 ( black disc and all ) , MGS2 Substance for PS2 ( with VR and skateboarding games ) and disc 1 of MGS3 Subsistence for PS2 . It would've been cool if they packed in the enhanced MGS1 , Integral , into this box , but thats the only real problem I can find with this set . There are three classic games which add up to 30 - 45 hours of game time for $29.99 . It's a great value and a great way to get ready for MGS4 . Don't forget to pick up Portable Ops for the PSP too , its canonical .

132 4 I owned a Playstation when I was a kid but never got into the MGS series . I just recently got a PS2 for real cheap and picked up a bunch of stuff that I never got around to , this included . This has to be one of the best purchases I've made in a long time and I plan to keep it forever !

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
This is an awesome buy for anyone who doesn't already own these games and is a fan of the Metal Gear series . Three brilliant games for a great price .
There are however a few things you should know before you buy this . To be able to save in Metal Gear Solid ( the Playstation one game ) , you need a PSone memory card . The other 2 games are PS2 games so no problems there . Also for Metal Gear Solid 3 , it is the Subsistence version , but only the first disc . The second disk with the extras is not in this package .
But besides that this is a must buy if you still have a PS2 and want to get into these games . [ . . . ]
183 4 After playing Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3 , I read about someone who went back and played the whole Play Station Metal Gear set and thought it would be interesting . It is very cool despite some of the primative graphics to play the games and locations referenced and sometimes played in the MGS4 game . I'm sure this will lead me to play MGS4 again with a greater appreciation for the whole story .
199 4 My recent acquisition of a Playstation 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4 prompted me to play the first three games through . There were a lot of story elements for which I had no frame of reference . I nearly wept during the ending scene for MGS3 .
322 4 This game is very difficult . The gameplay is very very very confusing and it's one of the hardest game I've played . However , when I play games , its for enjoyment and for challenge . This game is not so much enjoyable to me and the challenge is ridiculously crazy . I'm into Ninja type action game and been a fan since sega genesis era but this game is not for me . Recommended for patient people who likes to use their brain to play games .
123 4 If your a fan of the Hideo Kajima series then this is a must have item , not only is it at a good price but also a great deal . You get not one but the three originals in the metal gear solid series which is great for those who love the story line and want to own the entire collection . Each is just like the originals of the games nothing excluded , the only thing I think they could do to improve this set is by adding the forth and final installment to Solid Snakes story games other than that it's just about perfect .
102 4 Great game except you will have problems playing the second half of the first game ( Metal Gear Solid I ) on some versions of PS II . It may work ok on PS III , but is meant for PS I .
179 4 Shipping on this item took entirely too long . The games are an excellent set of games and I would reccomend these games to anyone who enjoys spys , espionage , gunfire , a good story line , and stealth .
201 4 I am very satisfied with this product . It was delivered as promised , and in less time than expected . The quality was outstanding . The items were new and unused as stated , and played very well . The games were entertaining while offering a challenge . All in all , this product was more than I expected . I would definately purchase from the seller again .
212 4 My son is very happy with this game . He even jumped up and down when he got it and shrieked like a girl and he's a 15 - year-old boy !
218 4 My husband plays this for hours on end , which can only mean that he really enjoys it . I often wonder what the fascination with such games is derived from , but well , you know men .
220 4 I bought this for really cheap and got the most fun from these 3 games . Greatly recommend for anyone who loves these type of stealth / action espionage games .
232 4 This is the best collection series you can buy for the price of one , because these games are hard to find anywhere else . The collection features : MGS 1 , MGS 2 Sons of Liberty , MGS 3 Snake Eater , in which MGS 1 & 2 have Substance part of the game .
255 4 Metal Gear is one of my favorite series , and when I found out their was a box set of the first three I had to have it .
259 4 If you're reading this , then I don't have to tell you about Metal Gear . This is simply a great deal especially when the FINAL one is cmoing out June 12th . You need to buy this set and play each one again to re-familiarize yourself with all the characters . I have Metal Gear Solid 4 : Guns of the Patriots pre-ordered so obviosly I take this game very serious because it is just that AWESOME ! If you think you feel the same as I do , then you should do the same . I have done a lot of research on the MGS 4 , and heard they are bringing back most of characters from all the one before . They'll at least have cameo's , so I would be a good idea to know that the little girl Snake and Otacon are living with is Olga's daughter . You remember Olga from Sons of LIberty ? Then buy the set and play , play , play .
319 4 I am trying to play the original metal gear solid on the PS3 and everytime i try to start a new game it goes back to the main menu and wont do anything can you please help me .
176 4 Allow me to start out by saying , I'm a recent MGS fan , I bought MGS 2& 3 off of a friend for cheap , and bought the essential collection just for MGS 1 ( The original release of MGS goes for $30 used anyway )
This bundle is perfect if you didn't quite understand everything in MGS 4 or are just missing even one MGS . MGS 2& 3 are the special re-releases of the original's . One common complaint is that MGS 3 doesn't include the 2nd disc , I see were you guys are coming from ( not being able to play Metal Gear 1& 2 ) But you have to understand that the 2nd disc was mainly for MGO ( Metal Gear Online ) And it would have been useless to include a disc for servers that are no longer online .
What I really like about this bundle is the redesigned cases for all three MGS's gives it something a little more unique , and all the discs are one color , witch is a nice touch .
As seen in some of the pictures above MGS 1 is the PS1 ORIGINAL . Not a single pixel has been touched ( aka-this does not include the Gamecube remake ) and its still on 2 CD-Roms . One thing that really makes me mad is people saying I didn't really get into MGS 1 because the graphics were crap . Guys , this game is from 1998 , Kojima used the hardware available to its fullest and you would be hard pressed to find a better looking game from the PS1 era ( with the exception of FF9 witch was released right at the end of the PS1 ' s life ) If you give the game a chance , you will see that it trumps MGS 2& 3 and is , in my book tied with MGS 4 .
The only thing that I don't like about this bundle is that the games aren't individually shrink wrapped . ( Nitpicking here ) Whereas the other essential collections are .
Overall PERFECT if you want to enter the world of MGS and with the recent news of MGS 4 going greatest hits ( witch is now at the budget minded price of $27.99 ) you can have the whole collection for under $70 !
077 4 This is literally what it says it is - the essentials , nothing more , nothing less . It comes with all 3 games , no changes or alterations . Metal Gear Solid 1 is still the identical PS1 release ( so you need a PS1 memory card ) and MGS3 : Subsistence comes with only disc 1 of 2 . They did not include the equally exquisite MG1 or 2 for the MSX , nor did they include the PSP game , extra VR missions for 1 , or any other bonus material .
In comparison to the Japanese 20th anniversary edition ( which included all that and more ) , this seems like a lame attempt to further cash in on the series . That being said though , all 3 are absolutely stellar games ( MGS1 is easily one of the most ground breaking games of all time ) . If you are missing one or all of the games , not getting the set at $30 is foolish . On the other hand , if you already have them all , there is absolutely nothing new here to warrant picking it up outside of collection purposes .
152 4 For the price at the time ( Approx $30 US ) it was an excellent buy . These are great games , in my opinion . . . This set is slightly unusual in that the games themselves appear slightly different from the standalone store-bought versions . . . however I cannot seem to put my finger on why . . . Although I know they are titled differently ( Namely ' SUBSISTENCE ' )

great game play . very intriguing . great cut scenes - movie like .

Three of the best games ever in one solid pack . Just make sure you have a PS1 Memory card ( If you're running on a PS2 ) otherwise you won't be able to save MGS1 .
Either way you cannot go wrong with this pack at all , for $30 its worth every penny you spend .

208 4 I'm thrilled .
My experience into the Metal Gear saga has been with the very first game in this trilogy .
Starting with Metal Gear Solid , I had quite a few laughs and challenges working to get through the little I did . Mostly I had watched Dad years ago as he braved the fortress infested with guards and challenging bosses . What really does the game for me is the little perks of being ordered to press the action button by the Colonel that briefs each task .
I haven't myself played this or any of the others . . . so it's an experience I'm willing to take .
The second I had similar exposure to . Only Dad played this one really . I also found the controls were switched about from this compared to the first . Kind of throws me off a bit .
Raiden in the game is Hideo's favorite . . . however people didn't appreciate him until the fourth game . . . and - then - wished they could play him . Hmph .
Knowing the story here too , I'd say the game was very wacky and seemed rushed up at the end , when everything is just purely chaotic and making very little sense . I suppose I thought one thing was going on when really I was only half way right .
The third differs to me in that a good friend of mine was showing me areas and tasks he was completing . He had the crap version with only overhead camera . I observed him run through , take out a guard , continue going , head into an area where he flips a guard over the railing , runs down the stairs , guard lands and knocks out another guard , third hears the noise and turns away to go investigate just as he comes around the stairs and leaves the room ? Crazy .
He also knew exactly how to aim on the TV to snipe out guards with his pistol . . . pretty amazing .
I did point out a few things that he never figured out before though . . . like an area with a certain disguise . . . other people recognize it's a disguise , but what my friend didn't know is that you could use a classic trick and that group isn't the wiser either as they just stare at you confused .
Sadly , the first game did not come with the bonus VR Missions disk . . . which would have probably made this complete , other than the third game did not likewise have the additional disk from the special release of MGS III .
Prices have dropped on the PS2 era . . . it is time to sweep up the glory and find the treasures that have been forgotten .
004 4 The Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection is a great way to play all that has come before the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 is released .
I have heard alot of griping because the second disc from Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence is NOT included . Though I was a bit peeved about this at first , I do own an original copy of Subsistence which included the original versions of Metal Gear 1 and 2 from the Japanese MSX and I can understand Konami's decision in this regard .
The main draw of the 2nd disc of Persistence was Metal Gear Online . The serves have long been shut down and it would be pointless to release a game you can't even play any longer .
I've also heard much griping about Metal Gear Solid ( 1 ) being on two CD-ROM discs instead of a DVD-ROM . Use some logic here folks : Konami is giving you Three games for under $30 . The original Metal Gear Solid is quite expensive and / or hard to find anymore . Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance is rather pricey for the PS2 version ( the inferior Xbox version is fairly easy to find cheap ) . And even though the Persistence disc ( disc 2 ) of Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence is not included , all the changes made to the game ( camera angles , etc . ) ARE included on the disc .
For those new to the series or wanting to pick up the games again since they no longer have them , $10 a piece is pretty damn cheap ! For those collector's out there like me , you are getting all three games with beautiful new artwork , Metal Gear Solid in a very nice DVD amaray-style case ( yes ! ) and a cool slipcase to house it all .
If you are playing Metal Gear Solid ( one ) on a PS2 , you will need a PSOne memory card as per usual with all PSOne games . It works just fine on a PS3 ( any model ) and you can set up a virtual memory card .
If you are playing Metal Gear Solid 2 on a PS2 , you are good to go . If you are planning on playing it on a PS3 , make sure you have either the 20 , 60 or 80 - gig models as the 40 - gig model isn't backwards compatible .
If you are playing Metal Gear Solid 3 on a PS2 , you are good to go as well . Again , you have to have a 20 , 60 or 80 - gig PS3 model ( backwards compatible with PS2 software ) to play it on the PS3 .
I highly recommend this series to anyone . At $30 , it's a bargain price . I would also recommend the Devil May Cry collection for $30 and the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy for $30 . Tremendous deals , you are getting NINE games that originally cost over $450 for less than $90 now . That's an 80% discount folks !
016 4 I ordered this for my hubby for Fathers Day , he has never played any of the Metal Gear games before . I had previously owned the first and second in the series , but they had long since been borrowed and not returned . Since we ordered the PS3 Metal Gear Solid Pack I decided this would be a good buy .
First of all , the games come in a small cardboard case to hold the 3 ps2 game cases . Even though MS1 is a PS1 game , it is in a PS2 style case so that they can all stay together in the box . This means that the artwork is different than on the originals of each of these games . I personally don't care but just in case you do - now you've been told .
Each game comes with it's own manual as well as the ingame help we are all used to for the first couple of scenes . This is an excellent collection for the price , and I would highly advise the purchase if you like this type of game .
The only negatives I have are
1 ) the game controls take a while to get used to
2 ) The PS1 game of MGS1 will NOT play in either of our PS2 ' s . Our PS3 should arrive soon so hopefully it will play in that since that was my favorite of the games anyway . I am told that this is a fairly common problem , however my PS2 ' s will play all of our other PS1 games without incident . I am told that this can be fixed by placing Tape on the top of the CD however I have yet to attempt this experiment .
* * UPDATE * *
We just received our PS3 and it WILL play Metal Gear Solid 1 quite happily . Apparently it just didn't want to play in the PS2s that we have .
028 4 I mainly wanted to write this review in response to W . Herrmann's review .
His problem with the shrink wrap was just his set . He is right in that only the outter box is wrapped , but there were no defects in the wrapping on mine , The entire thing is shrink wrapped just fine with mine .
This collection is AMAZING if you don't own any of the other games . If you have every other MGS game you can skip over this unless you're a hardcore collctor like I am . This is a great introduction to the series . I have no complaints about anything being missing as this isn't The Complete Collection .
057 4 This collection was a great way for me to get introduced to the MGS series of games ! Since the first game I always thought that Metal Gear Solid games were just overhyped , but then my opinion changed and I decided to give them a try when I saw this . . .
Thanks for a great product ! Nice , protective package with all the separate manuals and everything !
059 4 First of all let me say that I got introduced to this games by first playung Metal Gear 4 for the PS3 , so you can imagine , when I first played the last one , the story did not make a lot of sense , so my lovely wife got me his set as a gift , so I started frm the begining , as soon as the story in MGS1 started to unfold I got more interested in the games , as soon as i finished each game I started playing the next one , so as you can imagine I have been playing MGS games for a whole month with out stoping .
The game play is very similar for the three games , with the excpetion in the two view modes in MGS1 wich was developed for the PS1 , but still a very good game . The second game introduces characters wich will appear in MGS4 and have very important roles in both games , and the gameplay is much more smoohter than the first . But the best of all is MGS3 wich explains the origins of Metal Gear , and the story has twist plots at every corner , so besides getting nervous during game the cutscenes with the story are OSCAR winning perfomances . The game play is superb , you get to change you camouflage as you need it get to different weapons , and have to use every corner to evade the enemy .
So , in conclussion , if you are a new player in the MGS series like me , I highly recomend this set , for the gameplay , story and value of all 3 games .
PLAY ON ! ! ! ! ! ! !
082 4 The Metal Gear Solid game series is a great series . I first played MGS2 when I was in high school , then I played MGS3 . For some reason I gave my games to a friend . But these games were so good , that i bought them this time again along with MGS1 , the game i haven't played yet .
You don't get tired of these games .
099 4 This essentials collection without a doubt is a true bargain for $24.75 ( after they've charged you $4.75 shipping # . You receive : Metal Gear Solid # PS1 # ; Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance # PS2 # ; and Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence # PS2 # , but I admit that it does come with notable flaws .
1 # For the Metal Gear Solid # PS1 # you cannot save any of your game progress whatsoever onto your PS2 memory card . You can only save onto a PS1 memory card or a PS3 hard drive , and this is a true letdown as this collection was aimed mainly at a PS2 audience and could not be fixed .
2 ) The original Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence came with two discs . The first disc had the actual game , along with some new camoflauge patterns and a newly improved camera angle . The second disc included an online mode # which is no longer supported as Konami shut down the servers in April 2007 # , a movie theater where you could view all of the game cutscenes seperately , and a few other features that I cannot recall right now . Now the PROBLEM is that in the collection version , you ONLY receive disc 1 . The most likely explination for this is , due to the previoulsy stated fact , that online is no longer supported by Konami . Even without the online I still would have liked to have received disc 2 . I think Konami was just flat out lazy for not being able to just give us disc 2 with the online feature completely removed .
3 ) A very minor flaw , for me at least , was the box art for each of the game cases . To me they seem very plain , and I would have much rather preferred the original box art for each game . Again , a VERY unimportant flaw , but sort of a let down to any strict clollectors out there , and me .
The first two points truly are the only major vices that this collection has # along with the 3rd minor one ) . But still , for a grand total of $24.75 , this collection was definately worth the purchase , considering that most new PS2 games cost $20 each these days , and that you receive what are some true masterpeices in PS2 and PS1 gaming still available today . This set is also a very affordable way for any gamers new to the series to learn up on the plotline going into Metal Gear Solid 4 # PS3 ) .
117 4 Okay The only complaint I have about this collection is not having the disc 2 for Subsistance but that can easily be remedied by buying the original game ( which I already have ) That being said , This collection is fantastic I love Metal Gear Solid and bought this just after getting Metal Gear Solid 4 just so I could revisit all of the games .
If you liked any Metal Gear or just want to fill in the blanks in the story before playing MGS 4 This is a definate must buy ! ! !
143 4 In terms of value , you cannot beat the Metal Gear solid 3 - pack that included Metal Gear Solid 1 for the Playstation 1 and Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 ( the Special Editions of each , which are very much worth calling special - the MGS3 included here is phenominal and far better than the original release ) for the Playstation 2 . The first game gave me about eight hours of fun , the second ten , and the third twelve .
The games themselves are layered , filled with drama , humor , and some of the craziest , zaniest characters and scripts this side of comic books . There's a lot of movie watching in these games , but they're fun as hell to enjoy . The gameplay is plentiful in every game and , while not as crazy as the game's premises , quite pleasurable and smooth . It's also enjoyable to see how the series evolved over the years .
If you have a Playstation 2 , you have no reason not to own this pack .
160 4 First of all , I'm not a kid - I'm 19 years old .
I'm relatively new to the Metal Gear fanbase . A friend of mine bought MGS2 and 3 a few months ago and I watched her play . I was immediately sucked into the storyline and soon enough I was playing them myself , even though FPS is not my usual genre . I got both MGS2 : Substance and 3 ( original ) used at GameStop for $ [ . . . ] . Since finishing them , I've wanted to play MGS1 but I wanted it cheap and in good condition .
I was hesitant to get the Essential collection because I already had Substance and the Subsistence in this set didn't have the extras I wanted ( namely the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 ) . I managed to snag this set for $ [ . . . ] , which I consider to be a much better deal considering I already had part of the set .
I haven't played them yet , but the packaging is very attractive and I can display my MGS collection with pride ( no used price stickers ! ! ! ) .
168 4 This is an awesome buy for anyone who doesn't already own these games and is a fan of the Metal Gear series .
170 4 First off i would like to say i absolutely loved all three of the games included in this package , they were a lot of fun and are very much replayable games . That said i have a few qualms with it .
1 .
I , personally played all of the games on my 80gb ps3 that has backward-compatibility . The only complaint / warning to other buyers is that occasionally during MGS3 : Subsistence , the game will slow down significantly , making it seem like you're playing in slow motion , however this only happens on three occasions that come to mind . The worst point of it is when battling The Fury boss , when the lag was so intense it took awhile to beat him . However this problem is easily resolved if you are playing on the ps2 where there are no issues whatsoever .
2 .
The games are loooooong . The first game is not immensely long , its just that the cutscenes are very long and in depth for the story and people who are impatient may get annoyed at them . I , myself loved them and this is just a warning to those who may consider a purchase .
3 .
If you have only played MGS4 on ps3 and are used to using those controls , they are almost completely different on these games . MGS4 was a lot more organized in my opinion and worked better than these games , but they still are easy to master if you play enough and practice .
PS3 Compatibility :
Just to let the ps3 owners know , if your ps3 is backward compatible you will have no issues playing the ps1 game ( i wasnt sure if it would play correctly in my ps3 ) . Also when fighting psycho mantis , just pause the game and press the PS button and then go to controller settings , and change the controller slot from there - took me a while to figure out how i could change slots w / out a 2nd controller .
Other than those nitpicks i thoroughly enjoyed the games and if anyone has not experienced them and wants to get a good deal for all three games , i HIGHLY suggest getting this since it is well worth the money .
190 4 I'd never played the Metal Gear Solid series before trying MGS4 . After getting used to the controls I began to really enjoy it . I wanted to go back and play the series , as the plot is pretty involved , and found this collection . This is a great series so far . It is hard going back to PS1 graphics , especially now on a bigscreen tv , but it is still a very good game .
Pro : A classic series of games , and for good reason . Very good gameplay , and a little different than most military-like games . Not a First Person Shooter in the normal sense . The best way through most areas is to avoid any conflicts . Good value for the price .
Con : Dated graphics , especially on MGS1 . Some of the dialog in MGS1 is a little rough .
I'm very happy to have the set , and will be tempted to find some of the other offshoots of this series when I finish MGS4 . A shame the series has come to the end . I hope Hideo Kojima will make something similar , or some one else will take up the mantle of the tactical espionage game .
228 4 This is a deal no one should pass up !
You get three great games for a real low price .
Classic Psone Metal Gear Solid .
Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance
And Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence !
Buyer beware of the only downfall of this deal . ( Just my opinion )
Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence only comes with Disc 1 .
If you want Disc 2 that has the 8 - bit old school Metal Gear 1 - 2
then you have to buy the standalone Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence .
Other than that this is the best deal I have seen so far .
235 4 I've been reading all of the reviews posted here , and there seems to be a lot of complaints regarding not having the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 disc . I understand that all of you die hard gamers out there were seeking this as part of the bundle ; however , I would like to know if you are such hard core fans then why don't you have a copy of the originals already ? I purchased this set as a means to understand what's going on in MGS4 , since I already had the PS3 Metal Gear Bundle .
I believe that for those like me who want to understand the storyline a little better and get caught up this is a great bargain . Sure there are always going to be complaints , but for the price you really can't beat this . I was going to have to buy and find all of these games separately anyways , since I had never played the series until MGS4 . . . so I was very happy that they boxed them in a set and priced it at $29.99 ( not to mention free shipping on Amazon ) .
If you guys have spent a lot of time playing Metal Gear Solid 4 , then going retro back into the 80 ' s is probably going to seem a bit primative anyways . Reminds me of the old NES Contra days lol . I think that the first Metal Gear Solid included is as retro as I'm willing to get in this series because of the drastic changes in cinematics and graphics . Overall , I recommend this set .
257 4 This is , all in all , a fantastic way to get caught up on what is easily the most epic and well-crafted video game franchise in history . You will need both a PS1 and PS2 memory card , but that's a small price to pay to experience this series from this early point .
My only gripe is that the second disc from MGS3 wasn't included , as that one included lots of additional content that I would have liked to have . Still , for the price it's hard to go wrong .
285 4 first and foremost , if you have never played the mgs series , this is probably the best way to do so in preparation for the upcoming mgs4 . chronologically , you would play mgs 3 , mgs 1 , mgs 2 , and finally mgs 4 when it comes out .
secondly , this series is probably one of the best stealth action / espionage games out there . the first two games pre-date syphon filter ( yes its THAT old ) . written / directed by the critically acclaimed hideo kojima , the mgs series is filled with deep characters , plot twists , and amazing gameplay .
i suppose the only gripe i have is with mgs3 . the reason being that they did not bother including the collector's edition version that included a bonus disc with a movie player and some bonus gameplay . i read that it was because it came with , at the time of the original release , an online multiplayer mode on the second disc as well that eventually was shut down .
all in all , a great buy , with a great price !
289 4 MGS , MGS2 substance and MGS subsistance for only 30 bucks ! !
you can't miss this opportunity !
309 4 This game set is well worth its pay : I actually couldn't play the first game because first of all I didn't have the memory card for it and second ( call me picky ) the graphics suuuck , I understand that's what was available at the time , but we live in a different age now with realistic graphics . I just couldn't deal with it . I get the gist of what happens in it ( MGS4 helps alot ) but that's besides the point .
The second game was very exciting and intense : like sneaking around guys and escaping if caught . And the guys you disable don't disappear ! You actually have to like stuff them in lockers or unoccupied rooms . Very realistic for a ps2 game . The graphics are smooth but not the best I've seen .
The third game is the stand out of the collection : you can do everything along the same lines of the second game and more ! You actually have to survive the rugged jungle while sneaking around guys and disabling them against all odds . By meaning of surviving I mean you have to take care of yourself throughout the game : You have to consistantly eat over time or after a battle because you'll wear down , affecting your aiming and your gut will growl giving your position away when your to trying to sneak ! You also have to watch what you eat because the food you kill or gather over time can go bad and give you food poisoning ! You also have to medicate yourself if you are poisoned . You also have to pull bullets and arrows out where you were hit and mend them . You even have to mend broken bones ! Simply left me awe struck .
But where the heart of all these games lie is in the storyline . These aren't just your typical everyday games . Every one of these games have an in depth story that immediately pull you in and unfold over time like a giant book across all 4 games . And they stay with you for a while even after playing them . Every one of the boss battles are memorable that are within the storyline . In short , nothing but epic .
313 4 If you like Metal Gear , this is great . of course if you have a PS3 you will see a huge difference in the graphics but is great to play again with the good snake in MG1 package ok for the price and the three games came with the booklets .
Great pack .
325 4 The games are great , no doubt , but if you're going to put out a product called the essential collection and included in one of the original games ( or rerelease I should say ) was the first two games of the entire series , you know , the ones that started it all , and you don't include them . . . Ooooh , boy .
But this collection is great fun , filled with three ( should be five ) of the best games ever made , and an incredible bargain .
336 4 I've read outstanding reviews for these games from every outlet , but , upon trying them myself , these are awful games .
Although these games pioneered the stealth / action video game genre , truth be told , I enjoyed the entire Splinter Cell ( Ubisoft ) series of games far more than these Metal Gear games .
This series of games just wasn't for me . I did not enjoy them at all .

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
It is what it advertises : Metal Gear Solid 1 , 2 , and 3 .
There is nothing to complain about for Metal Gear Solid 1 or 2 .
However , as many others have noted , Metal Gear Solid 3 is missing something . The original full game of Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater is there , with improvements ( primarily in the controllable camera ) from its second incarnation as Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence . However , what the Essential Collection lacks is the second bonus disc that comes with Metal Gear solid 3 : Subsistence . Buying Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence outside of this Essential Collection , you get to play the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 ( 2D games starring Solid Snake in his youth , providing you further insights into the world of Metal Gear ) a bonus game called Snake VS Monkey , a few other less notable bonuses .
Not being able to play Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 was a let down , however , the three main games of Metal Gear Solid 1 , 2 , and 3 are in there . All three games are fun if you are looking for a stealth-heavy , cinematic video game experience .
If it isn't too much trouble , you should definitely buy all three separately for all the bonus features : Metal Gear Solid , Metal Gear Solid 2 : Substance , and Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence . Do not pick up Metal Gear Solid 2 : Sons of Liberty or Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater by mistake - - those are the unimproved versions that lack the bonus features .

I will not review each game as that would take quite a chunk out of my life and because I decided to review this package as a whole .
This great package contains Metal Gear Solid , Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 .
If you haven't played ANYTHING metal gear solid-related then this is your chance to do so , and prepare for the gigantic title that is Metal Gear Solid 4 .
This is perfect for anyone missing a few titles from the series as it's currently very low priced ( I got it from a seller here at about [ . . . ] ) . And getting all 3 titles for that is , well , a steal .
Yes , it does not come with ALL the nifty bonus discs that compromise either MGS 2 or 3 but really , if you just want to have the core MGS experience in all its glory , then get this package .
Note : MGS 1 comes in original Playstation 1 discs , fyi .
I don't think konami is stealing our money as some have said , they're LOSING money selling this package . Just search for MGS 1 on ebay , easily it'll net [ . . . ] bucks BY IT SELF . Here you get all 3 for [ . . . ] bucks ( give or take ) . So stop crying , pop in Snake Eater , and enjoy this incredible saga .

Included in this set are three exceptional games . As has been said far too many times , these games have redefined the stealth genre . Of course , Metal Gear was about all there was to the stealth genre for years , so what this means is that they are highly improved sequels .
Now that I've brought up Metal Gear , it may be pertinent to mention to prospective buyers that Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake do not come in this packaged deal . It is a shame that they called this the essential collection while leaving out the first two games .
The other games are great though , and worth the purchase . Grab the two-disc special edition of Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater if you want to play Metal Gear 1 & 2 though . Just don't go on calling this the essential collection .

This collection is pretty cool if you don't own any of the Metal Gears . I bought this collection with the only thought in mind to get the first Metal Gear Solid since I already got MGS2 substance and MGS3 subsistence . When I got this collection I checked every game to see if there were new features or something like that , everything was the same except with MGS3 subsistence because it only had 1 disc and originally it had 2 discs , the second one with the online mode which is now out service , it was awesome until it lasted , but there were also cool stuff aside the online mode like the very fist Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake , secret theater , duel , and a mini game called Snake vs Monkey which was fun . It's shame that Konami didn't include also the second disc of subsistence , but well 3 games at that price is a great deal !
If you like the MGS series and you don't have any you should get this collection !

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
This is the best collection series you can buy for the price of one , because these games are hard to find anywhere else . The collection features : MGS 1 , MGS 2 Sons of Liberty , MGS 3 Snake Eater , in which MGS 1 & 2 have Substance part of the game .
Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
First of all , I would just like to say that if you haven't played the first Metal Gear Solid , you have no idea what you've missed out on . I think this collection is outstanding because of the re-release of MGS1 alone , but to have the complete MGS2 and 3 accompany it ? Oh , that's stellar . If you're missing even one of these titles , get this package .
My only gripe with it is that it's incomplete and devoid of equally as awesome incentives . While I understand it'd be giving too much away to include any bonus discs , having no extra features feels cheap to me . Especially so with the case of MGS1 . Most people forget that they released the second part of MGS : Integral in the states as MGS : VR Missions . Including that would have made it a complete set . Also , and this is just wishful thinking , but the MGS3 : Subsistence preorder came with Metal Gear Saga Vol . 1 . I think it would have been wonderful to include either a copy of that or a Saga Vol . 2 with this and have Vol . 3 accompany MGS4 .
Aside from those small points , at $30 , you just can't go wrong with the essential collection . MGS1 by itself would be at least that much as it's rare now .

My recent acquisition of a Playstation 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4 prompted me to play the first three games through . There were a lot of story elements for which I had no frame of reference . I nearly wept during the ending scene for MGS3 .

If you are a Metal Gear Solid fan , then this is for you . It has the original ps1 verison of Mgs ! That's hard to come by . It comes with subsistence and substance of MGS 2 and 3 . My only complaint , it doesn't come with the extra discs that were suppose to be with Substance and Subsistence .

I guess this set is a good value , IF you like these games .
I did not . They are rehashed , dressed up versions of 1980 ' s video games .
The movement , views , every part of the game is on par with my old coleco game from 1982 . The right analog stick doesn't even do anything .
If you are looking for a game that utilizes the still impressive power of the PS2 platform , don't look at Metal Gear Solid .
My copy is for sale , half price .

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
First off i would like to say i absolutely loved all three of the games included in this package , they were a lot of fun and are very much replayable games .
036 4 The name on the side of the box says it all when it comes to the Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection . If you're a Metal Gear Solid fan or you're looking to simply pick it up for the first time this is the set you want to have .
Not only does it include the first three games of the Metal Gear Solid series it also has the original version for the Playstation 1 classic Metal Gear Solid . Some may not find that appealing but the black sided disk is absolutely amazing as it is one of the only games even by today's standards to ever do anything like that . One unfortunate part of this being the original Playstation 1 game is that it does not support memory cards from the Playstation 2 or above , as you would imagine if you thought about it . So I would recommend if you're playing the original game either have your old memory card handy or purchase one along side it .
Along with that the second disk for Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater is not included so if you were hoping for bonus content such as directors cut in this box set you're going to be missing out on that .
Other then that the game is absolutely amazing . For the price that you can get it off Amazon it is a deal that should not be passed up for anyone looking to own the entire franchise or simply jump on board since you heard about Metal Gear Solid 4 : Guns of the Patriots . Whatever your reasoning this is a game collection you won't regret having .

The first 3 games in the Metal Gear Solid franchise , remade in anticipation of MGS4 . Metal Gear Solid : original PlayStation disc ( first time any PS1 disc has been made since 7 years ago , very cool . ) Includes VR missions , other extras . Metal Gear Solid 2 : Substance version . Includes tons of extras like more VR missions , etc . Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence version . Unfortunately , Disc 2 wasn't included , which contained the original MSX games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake , as well as a Duel mode , Demo Theater , Secret Theater and alternate camouflage downloads . This was done since the disc contained the original version of Metal Gear Online , which only lasted about a year . Too bad they didn't keep everything else , though .
Other than MGS3 ' s missing disc , no flaws whatsoever . Each game is presented in a new disc case with original cover art made by the art designer for the series . Strangely , the Metal Gear Solid case looks like a PS1 / PS2 hybrid : brand label on left edge like original PS1 jewel case , but has same font type and spine layout as a PS2 cover . Interesting . And for only $30 , when originally each of these games cost $50 . That's 80% off , people . I definitely recommend this collection .
My rating :
88 / 100

This is a deal no one should pass up !

If you're reading this , then I don't have to tell you about Metal Gear .

Only problem is if you no longer have a ps1 memory card . Other than that it is awesome .
281 4 The prices for three games ( each separately fetch a used price of well over $20 ) combined is excellent . All three are excellent games , and Metal Gear Solid 1 is alone worth the cost . My only criticisms are that they didn't use the Twin Snakes release instead of vanilla MGS1 and that MGS3 : Subsistence is missing its two bonus discs . The graphics on MGS1 have not aged well . Remember , MGS1 requires a PS1 memory card .
Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
I ordered this for my hubby for Fathers Day , he has never played any of the Metal Gear games before .
* * UPDATE * *
We just received our PS3 and it WILL play Metal Gear Solid 1 quite happily . Apparently it just didn't want to play in the PS2s that we have .

I have a PS2 . The first game is for the Play Station ( 1 ) . I have not played it yet , but I was told if I use the PS1 memory card , I can save as I play . I just finished GMS2 and I liked it . The character Jack is whiny . Be aware , there is a lot of no play character interactions , and when saving you have to listen to his girlfriend ramble on ( It was not info that could be used in the game ) . GMS3 seems like a prequal to 2 . ODD . But that is ok . Great games . I will have to get a PS3 so I can play GMS4 .

I have a PS2 . The first game is for the Play Station ( 1 ) . I have not played it yet , but I was told if I use the PS1 memory card , I can save as I play . I just finished GMS2 and I liked it .

About the product :
I played MGS , MGS2 a couple of years ago but never got the chance to play MGS3 . And when I saw its reviews recently I decided I'll give it a go . But unfortunately all the copies I found offline of ( MGS3 : Subsistence ) were somewhat expensive for a PS2 game ! So finally I found this product and it was just what I needed . The improved MGS2 & MGS3 Plus I didnt have a copy of my own of MGS and now I have all three in my collection . Excellent and for an Excellent price .
About the Game :
The games are so much fun ( if your into stealth-action ) . Especially MGS3 . That game totally RULED ! ! Story is just amazing ! And game play is also great .
I totally recommend this product .

I have been a Metal Gear Solid fan / junkie since the series was intruduced to me by a good friend on the PS2 . He was playing MGS2 and I was hooked , later to find out I had already played MGS and hadn't known it . But as the Series has grown I have grown as a MGS fan and , this Collecter's set is just the thing for any Metal Gear Head ! ! ! This product is not only amazing because of its low price tag but the disc lay out and original content of the previous games untainted keeps the games feel authentic and very real , a great buy for any MGS fan and definitely a great buy just for a fun play .

Metal Gear Solid is a great game , and the 3 pack is a great price . However , the first metal gear is for PS1 . Therefore , if you have a PS2 you will have to buy a memory card for PS1 in order to save the game . And Sony no longer makes them .

An unbelievable deal , MGS3 Subsistence is worth this price alone and comes with MGS2 Substance including the first one for PS1 . Only thing that bothered me is that Duel Mode is not in MGS3 nor is Ape Escape did not care for that anyways , the Movie Theater is on the first disk in case you want to watch previous scenes but Secret Theater which are parodies is not although you can just watch those on youtube if need be . And in MGS1 Meryl's Codec is in the booklet .

I owned a Playstation when I was a kid but never got into the MGS series . I just recently got a PS2 for real cheap and picked up a bunch of stuff that I never got around to , this included . This has to be one of the best purchases I've made in a long time and I plan to keep it forever !

I'm thrilled .

This is fantastic and stylish . I had been wanting to get into the metal gear series for a while ( I rented MGS2 a few years back and played it non-stop until I completed it . ) and this is an excellent price to get into it with . The boxes and manuals have unique art that hasn't been seen on previous boxes and all match in style to make the set look great together . Also nice is getting the PSX game in a DVD case instead of one of those fragile jewel cases . If I have any complaint , it's that the box they all fit into is kind of flimsy . It would be nice if they had made it a bit thicker . This doesn't detract from the games , of course . They were so great that I couldn't resist going out and picking up the PS3 bundle with MGS4 .

This is , all in all , a fantastic way to get caught up on what is easily the most epic and well-crafted video game franchise in history . You will need both a PS1 and PS2 memory card , but that's a small price to pay to experience this series from this early point .
My only gripe is that the second disc from MGS3 wasn't included , as that one included lots of additional content that I would have liked to have . Still , for the price it's hard to go wrong .

This game set is well worth its pay : I actually couldn't play the first game because first of all I didn't have the memory card for it and second ( call me picky ) the graphics suuuck , I understand that's what was available at the time , but we live in a different age now with realistic graphics .
Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
I've been reading all of the reviews posted here , and there seems to be a lot of complaints regarding not having the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 disc .

I'd never played the Metal Gear Solid series before trying MGS4 .

The only draw back from this collection is that the original Metal Gear Solid is on old PS1 cds instead of dvds . This really doesn't make a difference at all , but it was something I was hoping for . Also there really isn't any bonus material for purchasing this set which also keeps it from getting 5 stars . It would have been nice to throw in the originals or something , but I'm sure there is some kind of copyright infringements there . Still a great buy if you want to get caught up for MSG4 .

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection is great . I'm giving it five stars because a ) it's Metal Gear Solid , and b ) it's exactly what it says it is . The three Metal Gear Solid games in one . Nowhere does it say , bonus content . I admit , it would be nice to have a PS2 copy of MGS1 , but one was never made . All in all , buy this game if you have one or none of the MGS series - - it's a fantastic value for some of the best examples of videogames in the medium's short history . If you've got two or all of the games in the series , don't waste your time . I only got this because my 360 red-ringed , so I decided to get a PS2 . I'd beaten all the MGS games previously , but I wanted to do it again ! But I digress . MGS : The Essential Collection is a fantastic deal , and I recommend it to anyone who has never played the series before or doesn't own all the games in it .

If you like Metal Gear , this is great . of course if you have a PS3 you will see a huge difference in the graphics but is great to play again with the good snake in MG1 package ok for the price and the three games came with the booklets .
Great pack .
331 4 When I purchased the Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection , I was expecting the whole deal ! All the extras , the VR missions , PSP ACID games and then the Persistence disc for Metal Gear Solid 3 . I am not like other gamers on this site in the sense that I will come down hard on Konami North America for once again showing its disrespect for us true die hard traditional gamers in the United States ! It is galling that even after seeing how many people are willing to pay the extra dollars here in the U.S.A . for all the new technologies and bell whistles that come with them that these U.S . companies STILL labor under the impression that anything new here should come half completed , whereas in Japan they get the whole kit and kaboodle .
To anybody that buys this product , please read the box and item summary before you purchase it . If you are a Metal Gear fanatic like myself , you will be totally disappointed in the utter lack of extras . An essential collection this is not !
Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
Like the description says , this is a collection of three Metal Gear Solid games . It contains the original Playstation version of Metal Gear Solid , as well as the two director's cut versions of the Playstation 2 installments of the series - Metal Gear Solid 2 : Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence .
When I say the collection contains the original Playstation version of Metal Gear Solid , I really mean the original Playstation . This is surprising considering the age of that system and the fact it's on two discs . A PS2 port would have allowed players to rely on a PS2 memory card and allowed the game to fit on one disc . If you don't have a PS1 memory card , you're out of luck . Fortunately , the game is playable on the PS3 using the system's built-in memory card feature .
All three games are , as the boxes say , tactical espionage action games . You can try to blast your way through the enemies , but that really isn't very bright . If you're seen by an enemy , they'll call for help , and from that point on , an endless stream of enemies will come to find you . If you're able to successfully hide long enough , however , the enemies will return to their posts .
MGS is the simplest of the games , relying primarily on an overhead view to essentially make the gameplay 2D . You can't shoot in first-person , but Snake does automatically track his targets . In addition to the main game , MGS also has a VR Training mode , where you not only learn a few basics , but can also challenge yourself to obtain better times in each of the ten courses .
MGS2 : Substance , greatly improves on the gameplay by adding the abilities to shoot in first-person , climb small boxes , dive , shoot from cover , and hang from ledges . Soldiers can also be shot in different parts of the body for different effects . A head shot will kill an enemy in one hit , but aiming for the body will require you to use more ammo . Substance also has a great deal of bonuses . There's a VR training mode , greatly improved from MGS . Initially , you can play as either Snake or Raiden , and as you complete more courses , new characters are unlocked . While the course layouts remain the same for each character , enemy placement changes to provide varying levels of difficulty . In addition to a Stealth and Eliminate All Enemies mode , the VR training also provides weapon training courses where you use the games many weapons to destroy targets . Another of Substance's game play modes is Snake Tales , where you play through the Big Shell , one of the game's areas , as Snake instead of Raiden . Finally , an amusing skateboarding mode turns the Big Shell into a sort of Tony Hawk Pro Skater course allowing you to skate through with Snake or Raiden in an attempt to complete various tasks and earn points for performing various skating tricks .
Finally , MGS3 : Subsistence takes you back in time to the 1960 ' s where you play as Snake's father , Naked Snake . In the Soviet jungles , Naked Snake has to use camouflage and his survival techniques to infiltrate enemy bases . The game requires that you treat your injuries and keep your stamina up by eating food . This means you have to hunt for food and raid enemy storage houses for medical supplies . Naked Snake also knows a fighting style known as close-quarter combat ( CQC ) . This allows Snake to grab enemies and perform a variety of moves from there , including interrogation , using the enemy as a shield while you fire on his comrades , or just plain slamming him into the ground and knocking him unconscious . The abilities granted by CQC add a new dimension to the game that makes fighting your way through enemy bases much more feasible .
The games are fun to play once you're accustomed to the controls . Substance and Subsistence have so many controls , that they are overwhelming to new MGS players . If you take the time to learn them , though , you'll find deep games with an endless amount of possibilities .
013 4 It is what it advertises : Metal Gear Solid 1 , 2 , and 3 .

020 4 About the product :

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
This has to be one of the funnest Shooter Game / Strategy that I have ever played . ALL the games are fun , even the first Metal Gear ( which looks like PS1 graphics ) . This is recommended for anyone who never played Metal Gear and would like to own it . Get this collection now , don't buy them individually , it's a better value for the buck . Especially the 3rd game , which cost as much as this entire package .
If your someone that is timid about shooters I'd recommend this as well . This game is so fun that you'll forget about the shooting ( depending on which version ) and instead wonder how to sneak around that enemy near that left wall , or perhaps lure that other enemy into a trap ? This game is focused on stealth , and although you can fight enemies ( which at points you have to ) it's better to avoid detection .
The characters are also realistic , even in the PS1 version . From Snake's quirky comments and attitude , you'll enjoy the variety of personalities within each character and how they react to each-other as well . If Snake dies in the game , the characters will scream his name in desperation . Which can be a little sad .
My only con is the memory card . The game did not read the memory card on the PS2 ( This is the original PS2 memory card ) and therefore I could not save . I turned the system off , back on , same result . I then cleaned the slot and card . Same . So then I had to reset the machine and pull the memory card out , then put it back in without the CD . Funny thing is that the system read the card itself . So I'm not sure if it was the game's fault itself , but I was finally able to save after deleting some free space and having to go up against another no memory lapse even after deleting some space before I was finally able to save .

033 4 If you're new to the series , this game will simply take your breath away . Each game's graphics were overly impressive for its time and if you know the series already , you know this is a great value and definitely a collectible .
What's included :
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2 : Sons of Liberty ( Substance )
Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater ( Substance )
MGS3 : Substance is included . However , the actual copy of MGS3 : Substance was a two disc set and it included a second disc called Persistence . Persistence included a multiplayer mode that is not available now ( because the online service is no longer provided ) , the old metal gear games that date back to the ' 80s and more bonuses . This second disc ( Persistence ) is not included but the first disc is true to it's name . Everything else on the site is as it should be .
What is included in MGS3 : Substance is an updated camera and a bunch of other secret bonuses that you will need to purchase the game to find out !
040 4 I will not review each game as that would take quite a chunk out of my life and because I decided to review this package as a whole .

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
Well I played Metal Gear Solid 4 , and after I beat it I wanted to know more of the back story . I looked up Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection , for this offered $30 for all 3 games . This was perfect , no searching around everywhere buying separate overpriced games .
MGS1 was early PSX technology , it was one of the newer 3d games at the time . Like all MGS's it's mainly stealth gameplay . The enemy soldiers are the easiest of the MG series . It's a good introduction into the gameplay until later titles . Your main character is Solid Snake who has to rescue 2 hostages , but the mission becomes much more . He has to stop the Metal Gear , a weapon of destruction . The villians in this one as well as other Metal Gear's are strange and introduce you to their back stories along the way . You'll meet up with Meryl in the game , a lady soldier who helps you out at times . This game is actually my 2nd favorite MGS game after 4 .
MGS2 has some mixed reviews , let's just say you won't play Snake the whole time . You'll also play as Raiden a new soldier being sent out to rescue the president , and prevent an explosion and environmental disaster on a water base . You do get the impression of him being a rookie , he complains at times , and seems to be learning with each new sitution . He's an ok character to me .
The thing I don't like in this game mainly for me is the base itself , it seems like your going back and forth in circles . Like go to Strut A and to Core 2 , to Strut AB . You do this alot . The spy robot are also a pain , I prefered the cameras . Now the story is good , like the other MGS's . This is the least favorite game still out of the series , not good exactly overall but ok .
MGS 3 is the hardest out of all MGS's for me . I've died quite alot . You play Big Boss when he was younger , known now as the original Snake . You'll have a lot of enemies bunched together . It's a harder to stealth enemies . You have the added camoflouge in this game accordingly to the envirionment your in . For example dirt plantless environment , dark , forest , etc . The enemies are hard to see themselves , they take on the color of their environment . This game has the best story in my opinion , but it's hard and can be frustating .
The enemies in this are crazy as always , a guy with bees and a 100 year old sniper or some of them . In all the MGS's you get a radar , in this game you only get sonar . The sonar you have to click the R3 button , so it's tougher in this one . You can change the camera angle in this subsitence version , the older MGS 3 you couldn't . The camera change in this does help somewhat .
There's just no beating this deal . If your interested in even 1 MGS game , just get the whole pack it's $30 anyways . I'm glad I have the whole story line now , and going through them a second time should be easier . Remember some of them you get away less with stealth than others , so be wary . I really enjoyed this series .

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
Not the greatest bundle in the world , but still a good one . Although it comes with all-new packaging , the booklets inside are colorless , and the box holding the set is wobbly and thin when you take the cases out .
This package includes the original Metal Gear Solid for PSone , MSG2 : Substance , and MGS3 : Subsistence minus the second disc that came in the original Subsistence release . Although the online features for MGS3 : Subsistence are no longer available , the second disc still had many good off-line features . This was a major let-down for me , as well as no Snake vs Monkey . They basically pressed a bunch more disc-ones from Subsistence to put in this bundle . Other than that , the games are great , as they always have been , and this is a good buy if you're missing them from your collection . MGS1 is now hard to find , and the other two , when bought individually , would cost around $30 or more in total .

064 4 The Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection is just that . . . essential . Coming just in time for the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 , the purpose of this is to let those who want to absorb the story of the saga do so to refresh their minds for the concluding events of Metal Gear Solid 4 .
The Metal Gear Solid saga centers primarily on an operative named Solid Snake . The first game chronicles his mission through Shadow Moses Island where he has to stop his former unit Fox-Hound from launching a Nuclear Weapon : Metal Gear . As he undergoes the mission , he discovers many revelations about himself and what the meaning of his very life could be .
Metal Gear Solid 2 picks up the story two years later in which Snake and friend Otacon form a non-profit organization known as Philanthropy . They're mission is to get photographic evidence that the military is developing a new type of Metal Gear . Unfortunately the Tanker Mission doesn't go as planned . Two years later , a Plant is built where the Tanker went down and players were treated to one of Metal Gear Solid 2 ' s most controversial plot twists , they discovered they would not be playing the rest of the game as Solid Snake and they'd be playing as an operative named Raiden . Like Snake , Raiden's mission unravels many revelations about him . The second installment , in particular , showers some of the best plot twists in the series .
Metal Gear Solid 3 , on the other hand , takes the series back to the very beginning where you control an operative named Naked Snake , who will eventually go on to be known through the series as Big Boss . During his mission he is sent to save an Operative named Sokolov before Colonial Volgin can get to him . Much like Metal Gear Solid 2 , the game is divided into two parts , and the first part is a failure only for the second part to be one of redemption .
The Metal Gear Solid franchise is famous for its storyline of Solid Snake and other characters . The essential collection gives anyone a chance to relive the story with each episode back to back to back . Every story is told through amazing cutscenes with great voice acting . While some of the story sequences can get a little long ( especially in Metal Gear Solid 2 ) they're filled with great direction and a lot of story to absorb . And you'll want to absorb as much as you can , because Metal Gear Solid 4 will reference all three games .
The gameplay has also been very memorable , evolving throughout the series . Along those lines , each game never makes you go about each situation the same way . There are numerous ways to approach each situation , and with several difficulty levels ( coupled with a few other extras in the second and third games ) each game demands replay . Even better is that for Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 we got the Substance and Subsistence variants respectively .
If there was anything wrong with this collection , it would be that Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence doesn't include the second disc . While it's true , Metal Gear Online is taken down for Subsistence , the second disc did include the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake . These are two games that can really help add to the Metal Gear saga . It's a small price , but for those who didn't own the original Subsistence and wanted to play the original two games , just know you won't get them with this collection . However , this probably won't be seen as a big loss anyway . The story of Metal Gear Solid can be well understood without the two original games .
If you don't own the Metal Gear Solid games and you'd like to know the story , this is a good investment . The fact that you'll get Substance and Subsistence rather than just the original Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater make this a very good deal indeed .

If your a fan of the Hideo Kajima series then this is a must have item , not only is it at a good price but also a great deal .

This package is worth having just to get the first Metal Gear Solid game for the PS1 , that game in this day in age is hard to find unless you somehow manage to find one at a pawn shop . . .
Snake vs . Monkey ( Ape Escape spoof with Snake ) doesn't come with this package , unless you do care , you might want to hold on to your Snake Eater copy of Metal Gear Solid 3 .
Buy this ! You won't be disappointed .

I've been a fan of Metal Gear since its original release on the NES . Snake Eater is perhaps my favorite game of all time , which is why I am sad that this essentials edition does not include any of the extras that come with the original Snake Eater or Snake Eater : Subsitence . ( Including the always funny Snake vs . Crab skit ! )

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
This is a great product for anyone who has played the Metal Gear series in the past or some one looking for an inexpensive way to get into the Metal Gear series . The first game is the classic Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation . This 2 - Disk set leads Solid Snake through and array of amazing boss battles and game play that was ahead of its time . The second game in the set is Metal Gear Solid : Substance . It is a special edition of the Playstation 2 title Metal Gear Solid : Sons of Liberty . It comes with all the original game play plus 200 VR missions for more entertainment value for you buck . The third game in this set is the only disappointment . Metal Gear Solid : Subsistance is a special edition of the third Metal Gear for the Playstation 2 called Metal Gear Solid : Snake Eater . The game play is awesome but they left out the second disk of this set the included the original Metal Gear ( NES ) and Metal Gear 2 ( Previously Unreleased ) . All in all it is worth the $30 price tag .
214 4 The first 3 games in the Metal Gear Solid franchise , remade in anticipation of MGS4 .
My rating :
88 / 100
216 4 This is a collection of 3 really great games in the Metal Gear saga . The only negative things I have to say about this game is that MGS1 is still on 2 PS1 discs , and MGS3 doesn't come with the 2nd bonus disc ( which originally contained Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake ) , as it does in the Subsistence stand-alone game .
All 3 games are great stealth action fun , and are recommended to any PS2 owner .

I got this collection because I had no idea what was going on in the fourth game . I am extremely happy with this purchase . I consider this a bargain because it's three games for 30 bucks . The only thing I think is horrible is that MGS3 ' s second disk is missing .
MGS1 - One word somes up this game . Epic . The story , characters , gameplay , bosses , everything is epic . This game deserves every bit of praise it's received . A solid 5 / 5 .
MGS2 - A weak sequal , but by no means a bad game . It's fun and chalanging , but some parts are too easy followed by extremley hard parts . Also , the new player charcter , Raiden , is dissapointing considering I had loved playing as Snake for the fourth and first game . A 4 / 5 .
MGS3 - I love this game . You play as Big Boss during the Cold War in Russia fighting your own mentor , her Cobra Unit , a primitive Metal Gear , and last but not least , Volgin . Pretty epic if you ask me . And one thing I truly love about this game is that it is really emotional . The most emotional game I've played . The last boss fight and that last , ringing gun shot is amazing . And the bosses are great , with The End being one of my favorite bosses of all time , right up there with Psycho Mantis . I'd like to give this game a 10 / 5 , but I can't , so I'll have to stick with 5 / 5 .
So overall this is an excellent collection with amazing games .

Now that the series with Snake is about to end ( luckily we'll never know with Hideo ) this is a must have for the series fans . I sold the Sons of Liberty to get Substance and Snake Eater to get Subsistence , and I'm quite happy with that change . Something you probably already know , if not will come in handy is that Subsistence does not includes the online mode , just new camera mode and more face paints .

In today's high price of next gen consoles , it is tough to get something that you can play for around 40 hours or so for about $30 . I never played any of the metal gears before this , and due to this reason , I have held off on getting a ps3 for 3 months , just to play the fourth mgs .
BTW : I have an old PS2 , so it was tough to get these games to work , but I am not going to change the actual rating of the game . IT was my PS2 that had trouble reading the discs ( MGS3 ) worked fine , the other two , not so much . BTW you will scoff at the graphics of metal gear solid 1 . But you will over look them as you play the game . Metal gear 3 has great graphics .
All these are like great movies with great games . The endings of all the games are epic and elaborate . Hint : there is something always after the credits that is important , don't turn it off too early . All the games include great bosses , with cinematic movies accompanying them . Sniper battles in jungles and snow . You tackle huge machines with missiles . Open firefights also add a fps perspective .
The story line goes against conventional views of government and the world . They eloquently introduce thought provoking philosophical accounts about dying and being a soldier . Yea it is just a game , and I don't buy into the plots as being real , but they do make you think a little .
Overall I highly recommend this package , and it may become a collectible in the future . If you play these , you are almost guaranteed to buy MGS4 for the ps3 if u have it or plan on getting it .

The prices for three games ( each separately fetch a used price of well over $20 ) combined is excellent .

Overall , these are still three great games at a good price .
However , don't be fooled when it says you get MGS3 : Subsistence on Amazon's page . This does not mean that you get the whole set ( including copies of Metal Gear and MG2 : Solid Snake ) . These are not included in the package , the way they would be with the normal Subsistence pack . For me , this dishonesty ( on Amazon's part , not Konami's ) ruined the whole buying experience for me and I'm probably just going to sell this pack off to a friend or something .
Boo on Amazon for ruining what was going to be a good time by misleading me with their description on this site . .

OK I'm going against the grain a bit here , but honestly I grew up with the series and loved the originals from NES through PlayStation . However , if you are looking to jump into this game to play a few hours a week this is NOT the game for you ! Half the game is stupid plot cinemas , and while the voice acting and graphics are above average it's not really as engaging as you would expect it to be . Furthermore , the controls are really frustrating , if you are used to X being enter for PS / PS2 and PS3 games then you have to get used to the O buttong being the default enter button . . . sounds simple enough but trust me it's frustrating . Also the close quarters combat mode , which is vital to a stealth game consistenly does not act the way you want it to . I'm still giving this 3 stars because even with all these annoyances I'm playing through because I'm stubbourn , plus it's actually a great deal with all these games under $30 . . . but be warned , if you are a casual gamer this is not the game for you .

For the price at the time ( Approx $30 US ) it was an excellent buy . These are great games , in my opinion . . . This set is slightly unusual in that the games themselves appear slightly different from the standalone store-bought versions . . . however I cannot seem to put my finger on why . . . Although I know they are titled differently ( Namely ' SUBSISTENCE ' )

Yup ! The first 3 Metal Gear Solid games in one package for $30 - and you can buy these 3 separately for 20 each ! Not to mention the MGS2 here is SUBSTANCE which is a very rare find for the PS2 - I've tried looking for it on eBay and people would still spend around $40 to buy it used . . . well I got Substance in a 3 - pack for $30 TOTAL ! You'll also get MGS1 still the PS version with 2 discs ( unchanged from the original game ) , and MGS3 Subsistence without disc 2 ( the only downside ) but it's still worth it all even if you're just missing one of these games . I was just missing MGS3 , and wanted MGS2 Substance , and I'm happy with my purchase !

the first game of the tree does not recognize the PS2 8MB memory card so i can not save the game .
the other two games work fine .
i like the fact that the game has training sections so you can learn how to play without having to figure out everything yourself , i dont like games that assume you will figure out somehow . to be old games the graphics are not that bad .
overall it's a classic game so if you like this type of games you should enjoy it .

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
The Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection is a great way to play all that has come before the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 is released .

It is nice to have all three games in one set . The only drawback I would say is that the games do not come with all of the extras ( subsistence especially ) . Buying all three games separately would be just as good or better I guess . But the price is right and good to add to any collection ( assuming you don't own any of these yet ) .

I've read outstanding reviews for these games from every outlet , but , upon trying them myself , these are awful games .

The Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection is just that . . .

Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
I recently acquired this collection a few hours ago at Gamestop , and as a long time MGS fan I've played and beaten all the games in the Metal Gear Solid franchise , including Twin Snakes on the GC . With that said , after beating the games I sold them . But never bought the later releases such as MGS2 : Substance and MGS3 : Subsistence , so just finding out that this collection was coming out by Konami has made me ecstatic to play these great games again and I was guaranteed that I'd get my money's worth .
I haven't played MGS3 in 3 years , since the day it was released in ' 04 , and same with MGS1 and 2 which was a long time ago . They're still the great games I've remembered them to be . If you've kept up in the gaming world , you've heard critical acclaim of these 3 stellar games , and if this is your first time playing MGS and want to backtrack from MGS1 to keep up with the story to follow the upcoming MGS4 installment , then this is a no-brainer to BUY THIS !
There are a few things I dislike about this package and didn't know why in the heck Konami couldn't include . Like another reviewer has said , the MGS3 : Subsistence is an incomplete package without the second disc and why couldn't they fix the memory card issue on MGS1 ? Not only can't we save games if we don't have a original PS1 memory card , but you literally can't find these in stores anymore ! Unless you go on eBay . But if you own a PS3 or have a PS1 Memory Card already this just proves you're lucky . With that said , this makes this Essential Collection a bit flawed .
Pros :
- All three MGS's in one package at a great price .
- Two of them being the Director's Cut
- The original MGS on original ' black disc ' PSone discs . A rarity to see since they haven't made these in a while .
Cons :
- MGS1 not save compatible with a PS2 Memory Card .
- The second disc for MGS3 : Subsistence is missing .
All in all though , this collection is a must have if you don't own any of the MGS games in your library .

What can I say ? This is a collection of three of the finest video games ever created . If you've never played them , this is a great and inexpensive way to start . I guarantee , by the time you're halfway done with Metal Gear Solid 2 , you'll be hooked like nothing you've ever experienced !
My only qualm with this box set is the decision to leave out disc 2 of the Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence set . This second disc contains the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake for the MSX system . You'd think that by Essential Collection , that would include the two games that started it all !
However , the other games are presented in their original state and they are incredible . Well worth it !

If you're new to the series , this game will simply take your breath away .

The name on the side of the box says it all when it comes to the Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection .

The Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection is just that . . .

Welcome to the world of Metal Gear Solid . Konami releases a defintive collection of the adventures of Solid Snake , the master of stealth and reconnaissance . Work your way through deadly traps , unforgettable bosses , and emotional storylines .
This collection contains Metal Gear Solid , Metal Gear Solid 2 : Solid Snake , and Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater . Each game was critically and commercially succesful and now you can own all three games for the price of one game ! The first game is for the Playstation and the last two games are for the Playstation 2 . See how the series evolved and see the game that was definitve of an entire gaming generation .

This is a collection of 3 really great games in the Metal Gear saga .

I love these games and a chance to get the director's cut version of 2 and 3 and have everything in one package is awesome . I just have a couple of complaints .
First off , I really wish they had taken the effort to put in the Twin Snakes version of Metal Gear Solid . Having the original version isn't really the same . I know it was originally supposed to be a Nintendo exclusive but come on . Or , if need be , include both the original version and the TS version .
Also , without the original NES games on a disc , this isn't really the Essential Collection . Or I guess it IS the essentials but it certainly isn't the Ultimate Collection , which is what I guess I was hoping for .
Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection ( Video Game )
This collection is exactly what any Metal Gear fan is looking for and it is even better for the soon to be fan ! If you have not played any of the Metal Gear Solid games or only one or two of them , get this collection ! The original game in all it's glory will provide an experience in itself as surely even if you owned this game before it is most likely scratched or in poor condition . The Limited Edition copies of both of the second and third games will give you access to all the alternative missions including VR missions . The new box art gives a reason to add this to any collection , and all of this for less than the price that you would spend on buying one of these at used game store ! Get this collection !

I mainly wanted to write this review in response to W .

This collection was a great way for me to get introduced to the MGS series of games ! Since the first game I always thought that Metal Gear Solid games were just overhyped , but then my opinion changed and I decided to give them a try when I saw this . . .
Thanks for a great product ! Nice , protective package with all the separate manuals and everything !

This is by far a great collection to have if the opportunity was missed to pickup individual copies of each game . It is now in one bundle ! How can that be beaten ? Gameplay is not that different from when it first came out . This is a must have for a Metal Gear fan ! Especially , this is a prequel to the PS3 Metal Gear Solid : Guns of the Patriots .

After playing Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3 , I read about someone who went back and played the whole Play Station Metal Gear set and thought it would be interesting . It is very cool despite some of the primative graphics to play the games and locations referenced and sometimes played in the MGS4 game . I'm sure this will lead me to play MGS4 again with a greater appreciation for the whole story .

If you have never heard of metal gear solid this is a great way to get into the series ! Not only is this a great deal but these games are almost impossible to find at your local best buy or wal mart . at this low price you can enjoy some of the best games ever made by konami . The creator hideo kojima won a life time acheivement award for metal gear solid 4 last year . Also a few other game packs to keep in mind around the same price is Devil May cry and grand theft auto ! This is a must have for all metal gear solid fans !

A good way to experience one of the greatest series in gaming history.About a hundred hours of game play and some of the best cut scenes on any system to date.No game has a wider variety of weapons and explosives with endless applications in game play.Story line keeps you totally engrossed and each subsequent game developes the story arc.A must have for all serious gamers .

Considering the new technology available to gamers these days , this game is taking a bit of a step back to basics . As in , FFVII basics . The first game in the collection is a bit hard to play at times , and the dialogue can be cheesy or downright painful . Nonetheless , it has its fun moments , and suffering through allows a better experience with the next games . Moving on to the second game shows an improvement in graphics , characters ( and their speech ) , and game mechanics . In short , play them all . Even at the times you ask yourself why you're playing , it's worth it in the end . Really , for anybody out there that's grinded out mount money for a WoW character , that isn't anything new .

This game is not so much enjoyable to me and the challenge is ridiculously crazy . I'm into Ninja type action game and been a fan since sega genesis era but this game is not for me . The games are great , no doubt , but if you're going to put out a product called the essential collection and included in one of the original games ( or rerelease I should say ) was the first two games of the entire series , you know , the ones that started it all , and you don't include them . . . Ooooh , boy .
But this collection is great fun , filled with three ( should be five ) of the best games ever made , and an incredible bargain .

This essentials collection without a doubt is a true bargain for $24.75 ( after they've charged you $4.75 shipping # .

This is a great product if you are starting Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PS3 that is what I did and stopped 3 / 4 of the way through to go back play the other games so I would know all the references , and story line and have to say that now I know the full and whole story of the Metal Gear World and I am glad I do , plus you get all those hours of play for just a little money , the graphics are something many will find lacking in the first game but it was only psone it is not the cgi cut scenes of the Final Fantasy games but still very good overall . Buy this game if you want hours of fun for very little cost .

The Essential Collection is a must have for anyone who has played any MGS game , loved it , and wishes to reclaim the nostalgic joy of experiencing these classics again . I had owned MGS 1 and MGS 2 a long time ago and had traded them in for newer games . I was young and dumb . Thankfully , this collection comes out and I have been able to redeem my past ignorance . It is really hard to not recommend this product . The franchise is one of the best in ENTERTAINMENT history across any form of media . The value you get for it's ridiculously low price is unfathomable . Do yourself a favor and pick this up the moment the opportunity presents itself . There is no telling how hard it will become to find this product OR be able to get it for this price as the years pass by .

Okay The only complaint I have about this collection is not having the disc 2 for Subsistance but that can easily be remedied by buying the original game ( which I already have ) That being said , This collection is fantastic I love Metal Gear Solid and bought this just after getting Metal Gear Solid 4 just so I could revisit all of the games .
If you liked any Metal Gear or just want to fill in the blanks in the story before playing MGS 4 This is a definate must buy ! ! !

The site lists this item as including the Substance and Subsistance packages for MGS 2 and 3 , but it infact does NOT .
Games are great , but false advertising is not .

It's a great ida yo put a classic game of ps1 of metal gear in this trilogy . I hope the chnge the trilogy of resident evil and put Resident evil 2 for ps1 , Code Veronica and Resident evil 4
The Essential Collection , for this offered $30 for all 3 games .
008 4 I recently acquired this collection a few hours ago at Gamestop , and as a long time MGS fan I've played and beaten all the games in the Metal Gear Solid franchise , including Twin Snakes on the GC .
010 4 What can I say ?
045 4 Included in this set are three exceptional games .
051 4 Well I played Metal Gear Solid 4 , and after I beat it I wanted to know more of the back story . I looked up Metal Gear Solid : The Essential Collection , for this offered $30 for all 3 games . This was perfect , no searching around everywhere buying separate overpriced games .

192 4 This is a great product for anyone who has played the Metal Gear series in the past or some one looking for an inexpensive way to get into the Metal Gear series .
205 4 This collection is pretty cool if you don't own any of the Metal Gears .
210 4 Welcome to the world of Metal Gear Solid .
266 4 Now that the series with Snake is about to end ( luckily we'll never know with Hideo ) this is a must have for the series fans . I sold the Sons of Liberty to get Substance and Snake Eater to get Subsistence , and I'm quite happy with that change . Something you probably already know , if not will come in handy is that Subsistence does not includes the online mode , just new camera mode and more face paints .
302 4 I love these games and a chance to get the director's cut version of 2 and 3 and have everything in one package is awesome .
