Mario Kart DS

  • Total Integration

    • 002 4  It seems just like yesterday when the original Mario Kart made its debut on the SNES in 1992 . The game was a hit back then , and it isn't difficult to understand why . A racing game that emphasizes on sabotaging your opponents with weapons like banana skins , flying shells and lightning bolts was almost unheard of then , and to do so with your favorite Nintendo characters was , quite simply , pure bliss . Not surprisingly , the game captured the hearts of many gamers then . Fast forward to the year 2005 . Fans of the series have seen a few sequels through the years , but the DS version of Mario Kart was greeted with much more anticipation than its predecessors . The main reason , obviously , is the game's inclusion of integrated online play . For the first time in Mario Kart's history , gamers can now take on players from all over the world as long as they're using a wireless router that is supported by Nintendo . The game also allows up to eight players to multiplay in close proximity with only one copy of the cartridge , which essentially means that a gamer who decides not to buy the game can still perform a download play and race against a friend who owns a cartridge . Of course , to enjoy the other features in Mario Kart DS , you'll still have to purchase the game , especially when you're interested in taking on the single-player campaign . As with previous instalments , Mario Kart DS has a grand prix mode , which comprises of four races each that are span across eight different competitions . This means a total of 32 tracks for your racing pleasure . 16 of these tracks are brand new , but the rest consists of classic ones from previous renditions of Mario Kart . These include the Moo Moo Farm from N64 , Peach Circuit from the GBA and even the original Mario Circuit from the SNES . These will no doubt bring much joy for Mario Kart fans . Yet , even in the presence of the classic tracks , the newer tracks do not pale in comparison . The innovative minds at Nintendo have once again developed a series of circuits that are visually stunning , mildly challenging and always entertaining . You'll get to race through a pinball machine , a clock and even an airship fortress ! The combination of both old and new tracks is indeed a masterstroke that allows you to engage new challenges , as well as indulge in some nostalgia . Mario Kart DS also has a mission mode that requires you to perform a series of tasks within a certain time limit . These include collecting a designated number of coins , passing through a series of numbered gates in sequence , and even hitting specified enemies with specified weapons . The missions are divided into worlds , and each world various stages . Completing all stages in a world will unlock a boss fight , which could involve winning in a race against the boss , or even to knock him out from a platform . Defeating a boss unlocks the next world , up to a maximum of six worlds and a total of 54 missions . Obviously , the missions get tougher as the game progresses , but they aren't exactly impossible to complete . Gamers who enjoy more than merely racing should find the mission mode in Mario Kart DS a fun and captivating feature . The other modes in the single player campaign include a VS challenge and a battle mode . The VS challenge basically pits you against seven CPU-controlled racers in a never-ending series of races . This is the perfect training ground for learning the techniques of the game . The battle mode consists of a balloon battle and a shine runners game . The balloon battle requires you to burst the balloons of your opponents , while the shine runners game requires you grab as many shines as possible . These two mini-games are quite forgettable when played alone , so it's recommended that you engage them with a friend or two . Bursting balloons has never been so much fun . A Mario Kart game is never complete without an array of usable weapons against your fellow racers . In Mario Kart DS , the arsenal gets even better with the inclusion of some new items . One of these new weapons is the Bob-omb , which causes an explosion . If used accurately , the Bob-omb's impact on an opponent is tremendous , as it drastically slows down his or her progress . The Bullet Bill is another new item that is extremely cool . Using it will turn you into a flying bullet . You'll find yourself bursting forward with much speed , knocking over anyone who dares stand in your way , and most importantly , covering a lot of ground . The Blooper , one of Mario's nastiest enemies , is the third new addition . It'll squirt ink onto your opponent's windscreen , causing a temporary loss of vision . The range of old and new items more than complement each other , and you'll no doubt find great usage with them as you progress . The controls of Mario Kart DS are extremely simple , making it a game that anyone could pick up and play without much hassle . Of course , learning more techniques are useful when you intend to go online for some real challenge , and the game does give you a repertoire of skills to master . One of them is turbo drifting , which requires you to drift , and then quickly press the left and right button on your D-pad to cause your tires to catch fire . Releasing the drift immediately after that will result in a temporary burst of speed . This technique is extremely useful in chasing a seemingly loss cause . The real meat of the game , obviously , is the online feature . Once you get connected , you'll be able to search for players who're also online at the same time . It may take a while for you to get a full quota of four players , but the game works with one or two opponents as well . You'll have to race through a standard Grand Prix in an online game . You'll also get to vote on which track you want to race , so that you can at least gain an upper hand by ( hopefully ) getting a track that you're familiar with . It's also advisable for you to practise on the various tracks before proceeding , since you won't want to finish last all the time ! As mentioned earlier , you can also play with fellow friends with the use of only one cartridge , but the player who doesn't have a cartridge will , by default , be using Shy Guy as a character . The player only needs to turn on his DS when another player hosts the game , and he should be able to download the game into his DS for a quick race . As with online play , it takes a while for the connection to be established , but my experience with multiplaying has found no lag at all during the gameplay , which is definitely great . Beware , however , when you send a bolt of lightning towards your friend - regular attempts at this could possibly lead to a loss of friendship at the end of the races ! If you're a fan of Nintendo-style graphics , Mario Kart DS will not disappoint you . The game retains the usual awesome graphics from the past , and provides a great sense of details even for a supposedly cartoony presentation . The DS ' dual screen also comes in handy here , as you can watch the action on the top screen , while still referring to the touch screen for a real-time map . The map is especially useful for dodging attacks from behind . The audios are also highly enjoyable , combining great music and sound effects seamlessly . Somehow , the sound of vroom vroom seems to blend perfectly to the lively , catchy tunes in the background . If only prime time radio is that good . In summary , Mario Kart DS is everything you can expect from a Mario Kart game , and perhaps just a little more . The inclusion of online play makes the experience a little better , but even if you've no access to it , the single player campaign should still be good enough to keep you going back for more . Just remember to change your underpants .
      • 005 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I had my doubts about Mario Kart DS in the early stages of its development . Mario Kart : Double Dash ( Gamecube ) was never one of my favorite games , and I was hoping that Nintendo would stick to the roots with their DS edition of the high-selling , fan-favorite racing game . With Mario Kart DS , they've done just that . It seems that the developers took everything great from Super Mario Kart ( SNES ) , Mario Kart 64 ( N64 ) , Mario Kart Super Circuit ( GBA ) , and Mario Kart : Double Dash ( GC ) and put all of those elements into a single Mario Kart game . When you consider how wonderful all of these games have been and how much fun they still are today , that's quite an achievement . Mario Kart DS features some of the same gameplay modes that fans have seen for years : Grand Prix , Time Trial , and Battle . They're the same as always , with three ranks of difficulty in Grand Prix and several different battle modes in Battle . Nintendo didn't stop with the classic game modes . In fact , they added another interesting mode called Challenge in which you pick up certain numbers of coins or do a set number of power slides in a lap under a certain amount of time . These challenges can be excruciatingly difficult but they make you a much more weathered Mario Kart player and therefore are a great addition to the game . Also , Multiplayer has come in the form of Nintendo's first WiFi-enabled online multiplayer DS game . The races in WiFi multiplayer are relatively simple but it's a great addition to the game nonetheless . On the track itself , the controls are easy but don't utilize the DS very much - - driving is done with the directional pad , acceleration and braking are done with the A and B buttons , power sliding is done with the R trigger , and item usage comes from the L trigger . This simple system goes alongside several classic items and three new ones . The Bullet Bill thrusts you forward knocking anyone in your path off of the track . The Bob-Omb explodes , causing anything in its blast radius to spin out and slow down considerably . Last of all , the Blooper spits ink on every other racer's screen , making steering very difficult due to limited visibility . Visually Mario Kart DS stands out as one of the best-looking Nintendo DS games to date . It faithfully recreates some of the classic 3D tracks from Mario Kart 64 and Double Dash ( like the ghost house level from MK64 and Luigi's Circuit from MKDD ) while also bringing SNES and GBA tracks to life in 3D . Of course , there have also been sixteen new tracks added to the mix , making a grand total of 32 different tracks that all look unique but beautifully show off the wacky Nintendo universe . The music from all of the classic tracks return as well ( even the GBA tracks ) and the new beats are as catchy as the old ones . Sound bytes , like the different celebrations and yelps of pain when a character is hit with a shell , sound just like they always have . Mario Kart DS is the essential Nintendo DS game . If you've almost given up on the DS , than you clearly haven't played Mario Kart DS and for that reason you're missing out . MKDS is being sold for $35 , and if you see it how I do , that's $1.09 per race track and you could easily get more than a few dozen hours of enjoyment out of this before you want to play something else . Is Mario Kart DS worth it ? I'd say so .

      • 010 4  Mario Kart DS is a return to the classic style of Mario Kart play ( one racer per Kart , which the GameCube's Double Dash departed from ) and it plays like a classic Mario Kart game . This game features plenty of modes - - from Grand Prix races to multiplayer to new mission modes - - and a slew of unlockables to keep you going for hours on end . Audience : You don't need to be a racing fan . These games are great for nearly all ages and people of all skill levels , and feature varying degrees of difficulty to cater to the needs of just about anyone . Graphics : For a handheld the graphics are great . No problems there - - this game looks excellent on the DS's dual screens . Gameplay : Despite the relatively simple concept of Mario Kart , and despite so many games in the series , each title still manages to keep the franchise fresh . Mario Kart DS features a Grand Prix mode with a total of 32 tracks ( you have to unlock many of these by winning on the ones available ) . 16 of these tracks are new , and 16 are tracks from the other Mario Kart games . This is a good thing - - it's a lot of fun to revisit old favorites . There are also many characters to unlock . Mario Kart DS features an all new Missions mode , tasking you with various objectives and leading up to boss fights after you pass a certain number of them . Some of these are very tough . Battle mode is an important part of any Mario Kart DS , and in this respect Mario Kart DS does not disappoint . There are a couple forms of vs . battles , from the classic break your opponents balloons to the gather the Sunshines mode , and all are accompanied by the weapon-slinging mayhem you've come to expect from Mario Kart ! Control : The controls were adapted perfectly to the DS . Control is pretty much the same as earlier Mario Kart games , which , again , is a good thing . The top screen is used for racing and the bottom for a map of the track , which is a great addition . It's nice to see who's coming up behind you or where other racers are positioned on the track . Challenge : The great thing about Mario Kart has always been the varying degree of difficulty . When you start out the races are pretty easy , but as you unlock new modes and speeds and your opponents become more aggressive the game becomes quite a challenge . Multiplayer : The multiplayer action on this game is absolutely great . Not only can you connect over Nintendo's Wi-Fi network with 7 other people for an 8 player Mario Kart race or battle , you can also play with other people locally with only one copy of the game . You can also create a custom logo , which identifies you when you're playing online . Mario Kart has always been one of Nintendo's strongest franchises and this is another installment in a series that has yet to disappoint . If you've got a DS I'd consider this a must have .
      • 014 4  It was inevitable that mario kart would finally make its way onto the DS . The question that was on everybody's mind was : is it going to be fun . We can answer that question with an unequivocal YES ! AND A BAG OF CHIPS ! . While it is not as pretty and intuitive as its big brother Mario Kart : Double Dash on the GC , it makes up for that tiny flaw with moxie and great design . There are great new weapons at your disposal as well as more than a few familiar ones . The single greatest weapon addition would have to be the ink bullet that temporarily blinds the driving screen forcing the gamer to navigate using the map on the upper screen . And of course the new game brings in a new design feature that allows you to speed up if you tailgate your opponent for long enough , allowing you zip past the competition . But the single greatest design aspect of Mario Kart DS that makes it a contender for greatest kart game ever is summarized by two simple words : Wireless Gameplay ! Now you can battle people as far as the other side of the world provided that you have useable WiFi in your area ( and if you don't you can easily remedy this by buying the Nintendo Wireless dongle that attaches to your USB port on your PC for blissful online gameplay ) . I have had my buttocks handed to me on numerous occasions by players from Japan , Mali and even in the good ole US of A as well as narrowly squeeking by with undeserved victories . Player skills range from relatively new to god-like ( mostly the japanese players ) , so you might want to brush up on your skills before entering the online arena , but rest assured that once you get into it you'll fall hard . So , to summarize : Mario Kart DS good , so you should buy . Seriously . Click on the buy now button right now ! You won't regret it
      • 016 4  MARIO KART DS This the game of the century ! Some of the best graphics you have ever seen on DS . A good wide range of characters , including new unlockable characters like R.O.B the robot and Dry Bones . Cool new karts , and you even get to design your own emblems . There are three new weapons - Bullet Bill , Boo , and Blooper - plus some old weapons , like red shells , star and Bob-bomb . New tracks , as in Airship Fortress ( based on Mario Bros . 3 boss levels ) and Tick Tock Clock ( based on a Mario 64 level ) . Also , there are classic cups : some from the NES , some from the SNES , some from the N64 , and some from the GC . The best tracks in classic cup are Mushroom Bridge ( GC ) and Frappe Snowland ( N64 ) . A good game for people that have just bought the DS - and people that have already got the DS will LOVE IT ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
      • 020 4  This game is so addicting and so much fun . Remember Mario Kart on SNES ? This game captures the greatness of that game and multiplies it . I haven't had a game system since SEGA Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 . The DS and especially Mariokart , have re-awakened my love for video games which I thought had died . If you own a DS , you need this game . It is AWESOME . Honestly , words don't convey the pure awesomeness of this game . If you don't have a wireless connection , you're going to have to get one after purchasing this game .
      • 026 4  God i never thought I would see a perfect video game ever again like The Legend Of Zelda : Ocarina Of Time for the nintendo 64 . This certainly is right on par with this ! Every thing about this game makes me want to jump.I just did ! I recently picked this up ( opening day like every other mario kart ) and thought it was going to be slightly disapointing.Boy was I wrong. The game begins with the normal 8 : Mario , Luigi , toad , yoshi , bowser , wario , donkey kong , and peach .4 characters can be unlocked as well.Yet I was slightly disapointed by the character choice yet the new mario games have to much choice so it doesnt really disapoint. Now the characters have no class insted its in the karts. The karts have a drift meter * the higher it is , the better boost and drift you can get . , weight meter * the more this is , the more harder you are to knock of course and knock someone else off course * , handling meter * the more this is , the better turn you have * , acceleration meter * the more this is , the better boost or fastness , you get at the start of the race * , top speed meter * the more this is , the better speed you get * , and item meter * The more this is , the better items you'll get * . The karts are really cool like mario's B-dasher : a long white kart that gets amazing items or * spoiler * dry bone's dry bomber : a big tank with good weight , top speed , and drift. This can make everything harder and easier. And say , your favorite character is toad , but you really want to use * spolier * waluigi's zipper. If you beat the game , you can use any characters kart for any character ! The main modes are time trials : race yourself or ghost and try to break your record. You will get a mushroom and then you race yourself in any track of your choice . Obviously a mario kart favorite and a competitive one , yet it is single player only. But you can trade your ghost and recieve ghost's via LAN or via WFC.Next is Grand Prix. The main mode is a group of races called a cup inside a giant prix either Nitro or Retro. Then you can also pick 50cc , 100cc , or 150cc.Your pick as 50cc would be very easy and less fast .100cc would be medium difficulty .150cc would be very fast and hard.Nitro cup is in cups like : mushroom , flower , star , and special.Retro is in cups like this : shell , bannana , leaf , and lighting.Retro is a brand new cup that makes the game much more playable and feels fresh every time. Now it makes the total to 32 tracks insted of 16 . The retro cup contains all of the classic tracks from the previous 4 mario kart titles.track listing is as follows : Shell cup : 1 . Snes : Mario kart circuit 1 2 . n64 : Moo Moo Farm 3 . GBA : Peach circuit 4 . GCN : Luigi circuit Bannana cup : 1 . Snes : Donut Plains 1 2 . N64 : frappe snowland 3 . GBA : bowsers castle 2 4 . GCN : Baby Park Leaf cup : 1 . Snes : koppa Beach 2 2 . N64 : Choco Mountain 3 . GBA : luigi's circuit 4 . GCN : mushroom bridge Lighting cup : 1 . SNES : Choco island 2 2 . N64 : Banshees boardwalk 3 . GBA : Sky Garden 4 . GCN : yoshis circuit Now the retro cup is as follows : Mushroom cup : 1 . Figure 8 circuit ( this track is in the shape of an 8 very simplistic yet awsome for drifting ) 2 . Yoshi falls ( set on a dirt road very short but tons of cool short cuts in the water fall ) 3 . Cheep Cheep beach ( my favorite ! Contains 2 huge power jumps going across 2 islands ! Watch out for cheep cheeps and crabs. Also 2 wooden ramps 4 . Luigis mansion ( go into the mansion and race in the courtyard.Watchout for moving trees and mud ) Flower cup 1 . Desert hills ( a desert with tons of sand dunes pokeys and even the angry sun from mario bros .3 who spits jumping fire balls at you ) 2 . Delfino Plaza ( a really cool course with the best shortcuts and The biggest power ramp in the game.Watch out for stray boxes ) 3 . Waluigi pinball ( possibly the most favored course this is a huge course on a pinball machine.Go through a giant warp tube , Speed bumps , Power ramps , Giant pinballs , bouncers , and those things that whack the pinball ) 4 . Shroom Ridge ( this course let me down because i love the city car level except this is a boring track with no design at all ) Star cup * the best cup * 1 . Dk alpine ( a giant mountain with tons of ramps and giant snow balls , and snowmen. This is a really fun level ) 2 . Tick tock clock ( ones of the most favored levels taking place in the mario 64 level. This has tons of moving gears and clocks ) 3 . Mario circuit ( same old ) 4 . Airship fortress ( one of my favorite courses with a giant ramp that sends you like the dk mountain * GCN * . My 2 fav has giant fire thingys and potholes ) Star cup : 1 . Wario stadium 2 . Peach garden 3 . Bowsers castle 4 . rainbow road The new game has a bunch of new tiny fixes too.Like drafting when you are behing someone youll gain a huge speed boost. Now 2 karts have been dropped to one which means it ias easier to drift and the jump came back. This is a relief to all mario kart fans. Now vs.mode and battle mode can be played with bots.HALLUICHI ! this is a refief because i cant have my friends over everyday to play this . But most important : the multiplayer. This can be done by LAN ( across 100 feet ) but also this can be done online ! This is the first nintendo game ever to be online and also helps set up the online service for nintendo. This is easy to set up to get online too.You need broadband working internet , a nintendo usb wifi connector which you can order , and a wireless router. This is as easy to set up as xbox live and is fun too ! You can make your own decal and show it to everyone and have a friend code.If you have a friend code , You can play with them online ! Up to 4 or 8 players can play online. No chat or voice is a big bummer and sadly no battle online ! just vs . and trading time trials. But human compition makes the replay value soo much more and it cant get old.You can chose world wide or region play . Now A new single player mode has been added to train your skill at mario kart and add even more replay value. The mode is mission mode and has 7 worlds of missions : 8 missions in one including a boss battle. They can be easy or hard and usualyy involve collecting coins , doing 4 or more power slide boosts in one lap , kill the random enemy , steer through the gates , ect.At the end of each world is a boss. They are all from previous mario titles. They include big bully : N64 , eyerok : n64 , King Boo : N64 , Big bomb omb : m64 , wiggler : super mario sunshine , and chief chilly : mario 64 ds.They are realtively medium difficulty and are really challenging . Overall this game is awsome and makes other games go to shame !
      • 033 4  This game is my most favorite game ! it has racing , Time trials , battles , and more ! I haven't tried the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection but I imagine that it will be great ! My sisters are playing it all the time ! This game can be suitable for ALL ages ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! If you are looking for a good racing game Purchase the Mario Kart for the Nintendo DS !
      • 035 4  This is the one game you have to buy for your DS . It's one of the most fun , and one of the best games . It's a lot of fun multiplayer , and it's also a lot of fun single player . Plus it combines almost all the tracks from previous Mario Karts . Just buy it , you need this .
      • 037 4  For those still on the fence about this game - don't be ! It got me , a super busy college student , back into video games , for which I am profoundly grateful . Now , I just with I had more disposable income to spend on games ! This game kept me engaged for weeks , and I still come back to it the most just to relive the tracks I raced on when I was a kid . I highly recommend this game ! The online play is a nice touch , and works very well , for what it's meant to do .
      • 052 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I loved Mario Kart when it first came out on the SNES in the early 90s . I found the DS version to be just as fun - and far more portable ! You get both the classic racetracks plus a few new ones . You get a variety of kart sizes and styles . Go for the small , super fast kart , or maybe opt for the larger , heavier one . It all depends on your gameplay style . In addition to the fun single player games , the DS wi-fi maeks it very easy to play online with up to 8 players ! If you thought Mario Kart was fun zipping around against AI , you should try it against a few of your friends . If you want a bit of thinking , there are a variety of missions that you can take on . You can gather coins , try to beat time limits , and so on . I really appreciated that they didn't touch screen this to death . A lot of games brought to the DS go insane with touch screen features which make the game much harder to play . With Mario Kart , they use the lower screen for map information , which is really useful if you need it , but is nicely out of the way if you don't . It's the best of both worlds . What's really great about this game is that all ages love it . It's a game that grandparents can play with their grandkids for hours and hours and really have fun doing it . Highly recommended !

      • 059 4  I've had my DS almost since launch , and I have about 5 games so far , but Mario Kart DS is by far the best . There are 5 single player modes , but you'll probably be playing Grand Prix the most . Grand Prix is basically just 4 races , and whoever has the highest score wins . There are many imaginative courses in this mode , and its a lot of fun learning the ins and outs of them . Another fun mode in battle , in which you have 2 choices , Baloon Battles and Shine Runners . In baloon battle you have to pop other players balloons , which are located on the back of there karts , and keep your own inflated . In shine runners you go around collecting shines , and slowly the players with the least shines are eliminated . There are many characters in this game , ranging from Mario ( of course ! ) to Bowser . You should look carefully at each characters stregths and weaknesses before choosing . There are 3 new items in this Mario Kart racing game , and they will help you a great deal in your behind . The first , and my personal favourite , is Bullet Bill , which will temporarily turn you into a missle that speeds around on auto pilot , distroying everything it hits . You will probably only going to get this when your in eigth place , but it will probably bring you up a few ranks due to its tremendous speed . The next item is a squid that squirts ink on the screen of all the players in front of you . This item is never very effective on me , but it depends on where the ink falls on your screen . But , I would still keep an eye out for this item because , in my expierience , it really messes up the CPUs . Again , you will probably only get this item when your far behind , but its not as rare as the bullet bill . The last item is the bomb , which is , quite simply , a bomb . You throw it , and it will explode . This is the most common of the three items , and ive even gotten it when im in first place . Unfortunately this item is not very effective , as it requires great aim and timing to actually hit someone with it , and you not going to have time to aim due to the games quick pace . One of the games greatest features is Wi-Fi , which alows you to connect over the internet whith up to 3 other people and race . I havent really had that much luck getting it up and running , but most people have gotten it going easily . Overall I think that this is one of the best DS games to come out , and it has not come out of DS since I got it . I would whole heartedly reccomend this game to anyone , and if you own a DS then you should pick it up , its a great game .
      • 079 4  Great game , loads of fun and you can race your friends This game is very similar to the classic Super Mario Kart on the Nintendo Entertainment System . We purchased it for my Son who has really enjoyed it but I enjoyed playing it as well . There are many different characters and vehicles to choose from . Each vehicle has different strengths and weaknesses . There are also different special abilities that you can pick up during gameplay and you can use them to attack your opponents . There are five different modes to play as follows . Mission Mode : Where you are given sets of specific missions that you must clear in order to move on to the next set of missions . Grand Prix Mode : The driver who earns the most points at the end of a four-course cup is the victor . Game includes eight different cups , with each cup featuring four different tracks . Time Trial Mode : Your goal is to get the fastest time that you can on a single track . VS Mode : You can play singleplayer or multiplayer . In the singleplayer version you can race against computer-controlled karts , while in multiplayer you'll race against your friends on their own Nintendo DS systems . Battle Modes : You can pop your opponent's balloons by attacking them by colliding into them , before your own balloons are popped .
      • 085 4  Ah , the fun of racing . Of course , this time I'm talking about Mario Kart DS , probably my favourite Nintendo DS game . Sadly . I've only really played one other version and that was the one for the Nintendo 64 . Luckily , I loved it so much that I only ever played another game or two on that system . Period . Also , luckily for me , the version on the DS has some of the tracks I grew to love . If you also fell in love with previous versions , you'll find tracks from the SNES version and the GBA version , too . The concept is simple , you play as Mario or one of the franchise characters and you race others . You hit item boxes to get items to help you on your way and make the game a little more exciting . Besides racing , you can do time trials , battle or missions ( which seem to be common with Nintendo DS games ) . To to the spirit of Mario Kart ( one of the things I love most about this game ) , which is being pitted against your friends , you can play with others via 2 methods . The first method is called multiplayer and is with a friend ( or 7 ! ) in within range of your system . You can play with those who have the game ( Normal ) or those who do not ( simple ) . Friends without the game can download a more limited version to their Nintendo DS for the time being . Of course , with the WiFI capabilities of the DS , you can also play with anyone across the globe as long as you have access to a compatible wireless network . Besides that aspect , how is gameplay ? I find it to be pretty fun even when it's just single player . Like previous versions , you can play Grand Prix which is divided into 4 Cups made up of 4 tracks to compete for bronze , silver or gold place . In this game , you can also get a rating of letters or stars . Letters A - D work like grades in school and stars - from 1 - 3 - are even better ratings above A . The Grands Prix are divided into classes based on speed ( engine size ) , also like previous versions : 50cc , 100cc and 150cc . In this version , you can also play the 150cc Mirror version which is a flipped ( not backward ) version of the tracks . The game comes with several Grand Prix cups locked . By playing each of the Cups before it and earning the gold , you unlock the cups . Each cup can be unlocked in each of the engine classes . The Grand Prix is also divided into two classes - Nitro and Retro . Nitro contains new tracks and Retro contains tracks from previous games . If you're not interested in playing a whole cup or want to play more than one , you can play Versus . This gameplay consists of track after track according to settings you choose which include engine class , kart difficulty , course order , rules ( or lack there-of ) and teams . You can play free for as long as you want and quit at any time . If you want to play to a certain score or a certain number of races , you set that in the rules . To practice the runs , play time trial . Time trials have a new feature where you can send or relieve a ghost , that is a slightly transparent recording of an already completed time trial . You can see how you're doing against your previous trials or those of a friend . Like previous versions , you can play Battles . Mario Kart DS includes Balloon Battles although , there is a slight difference from older versions . Instead of starting with 3 balloons , you start with 5 , only 1 of which is blown up . Using the microphone , you blow up the others up to 3 at a time . Once all your active balloons are popped by items and damage , you lose , even if you have balloons in reserve so you must always blow them up . There's also a new version of battle , Shine Runners . In these , you collect little stars called Shines . Every time you are damaged or hit with an item , you lose a shine . Periodically , those players with the fewest sines are eliminated until only the player with the most Shines still remains . The newest addition is that of the missions . With 7 different levels containing 8 missions plus a boss stage , you have to complete different tasks such as driving through gates , collecting coins , collecting and using items on others or doing turbo boosts to earn a ranking of stars or letters ( the same as cup rankings ) . Each stage earns a ranking and each level earn and overall ranking . One of the features I like about this game is the ability to unlock things . Completing tasks or racing well offers rewards of extra characters or karts . Overall , there are 12 characters including classics like Luigi , Yoshi and Princess peach as well as let known faces like Princess Daisy , Dry Bones and ROB 64 . There's also a total of 36 karts to allow you more customization than previous versions . If you'd like to customize it even more , there are options to edit your nickname and emblem which appear next to your character on on your kart , respectively . Of course , being on a dual screen offers some new incentives as well . It allows for information to be displayed on its own screen and the overall playing image to be larger and more detailed . The Nintendo DS has pretty good graphics despite its small size so this is definitely a plus . During races and battles , the top screen shows up close racing view while the lower one shows a map of the track and stats of the other racers . In settings modes , the actual settings show up on the touch screen where you can select them with additional information or images on the upper screen . The one qualm I have about how Mario Kart DS is set up is that it does not fully take advantage of the innovative touch screen . Besides the title and selection screen , the touch screen is not even a factor in the game . Even during those times , the keys can be used as well . Overall , I really enjoy this game . I love to play with my friends but it's just as fun to play by myself . The Grand Prix provides exciting new runs as well as ones I love from older games . Even after unlocking all the different tracks and earning gold in all the cups , I can still keep myself busy by trying to improve my ranking for tracks , cups and missions . The option to play with friends in my living room or across the world also adds variety to the game and although I've unlocked almost everything n the game , I still play it frequently . This is definitely a game whose bright colours and fun sounds will attract children of all ages . At the end of the Grands Prix , the first , second and third place winners drive up to a platform where they are crowned ; I would definitely crown this game !
      • 088 4  I had played the original version of this game as a kid so when I bought my DS I decided to buy the DS version of MarioKart to play when I got fidgety . It's great to play though it seems more challenging than the original . The missions ad an extra element of challenge which I have yet to master but it doesn't stop me trying . I saw a kid playing the same game one day and he had gone through all the missions so it really goes to show that this is a game for anyone .
      • 092 4  Just to add another perspective to the many reviews , I'm over fifty , and I've never played a racing game before - - or any of the classic Nintendo video games , for that matter . I bought this one only because of the high ratings and rave reviews . And I'm glad I did ! I've never been much into real-time games , frankly , but I've always liked having one around as a change of pace . Back when home computers were a novelty , I found the occasional Red Baron ( a WWI flight sim ) game refreshing after many hours of playing chess or turn-based games like Civilization . That's just why I bought Mario Kart - - as a periodic change of pace from turn-based DS games like Advance Wars , Chessmaster , and Age of Empires . And it fills the bill perfectly . Maybe a little too perfectly , since Mario Kart is often my first choice nowadays . I was worried that my aging reflexes might not be up to a game like this , but it turns out I can handle it . There are three speeds to choose from , and the slowest is challenging but quite manageable . I'll never master the game , but I can keep my cart on the track most of the time , and I've enjoyed my share of victories . The race itself is spiced up with various items you can use to either enhance your own performance or interfere with your opponents ' progress . And I find this a nice balance . You don't always have the speed or agility to win a straightforward race , but you can sometimes use the items to triumph anyway . Yeah , it's dirty pool , but it's all in fun . And I think I'd probably lose interest in a straightforward racing game . The variety of drivers , carts , and tracks ( some of which have to be unlocked via skillful play ) make for long-term enjoyment . This game does not soon get to where you feel it's the same thing over and over again . Some of the tracks are very challenging indeed , especially at higher speeds . Anyhow , Mario Kart is lots of fun for young and old alike . One of the best purchases I've made for the DS . No regrets .
      • 110 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I jumped on board when the DS Lite hit the market . The initial DS didn't do anything for me as it resembled a game console that was made during the PS1 era . Kudos to Nintendo for the re-design . On to the game . . . I never really played Mario Kart on SNES where all the fun started . I did however enjoy it on the N64 and was addicted to it . The colors , sounds , tracks , etc . All my senses were put to their max . Now Mario Kart DS . . . All the fun of the previous games has been brought to the DS with great results ! The graphics are absolutely gorgeous . The use of the second screen is terrific which allows you to see not only where the other players are , but the ` bad things ' the other plays have left for you . Things like shells , banana peels , etc . The online game play is a blast too ! For the most part I play online as it is fun playing with people of all different skills . I'm not a pro at this game , so it's fun seeing how the ` pros ' do their thing and it helps me learn . In a nut-shell if you own a DS Lite and enjoy fun game play then Mario Kart DS needs to be added to your library ! The replay value is really high as the online play always keeps it active and fresh . The ability to play with or DS owners with only one cart ( which I have yet to try ) seems very cool ! It keeps my attention and I love playing it . I have the attention span of a goldfish , so any game that keeps me playing over and over is a winner in my book ! This game is highly recommended for anybody . Age is not an issue ! : ) This game gets all 5 stars ! Graphics , game play , replay value , and sound are all top notch !

      • 114 4  Anyone who owned and loved either an SNES and N64 is almost undoubtedly sure to love the Mario Kart series . When it debuted on SNES about a decade ago , we were all instantly in love with it . When the N64 sequel rolled out a few years later , those who hadn't already jumped on the bandwagon were pretty much guaranteed to do so . In fact , that game is probably the best game in the series . Years went by and Nintendo fans saw the release of a GameCube version called DoubleDash and a GBA version that payed homage to the original . Though both games were fun in their own right ( Baby Park anyone ? . . . . . anyone ? ) , they just didn't really reinvent the wheel or bring anything exciting to the Mario Kart table . Mario Kart DS is a game that can possibly reverse this trend . Being exclusively designed for a handheld system , Mario Kart DS really has its work cut out for it . Seeing as how the other MK games relied heavily on its multiplayer environment , how could a handheld recreate this mayhem ? Well , fortunately , the development team over at Nintendo has put a lot of work into this game . First , there's single player mode , where you can choose from Grand Prix , Time Trials , Versus Match , and Battle Mode . That's right ! Mario Kart DS supports bot-matches . So if you want to just race one opponent , you can ! If you want to enter a battle arena and bust some balloons , you can do that too ! This incredibly helpful when it comes to recreating the multiplayer environment . Additionally , the Grand Prix mode has a plethora of unlockable Karts , Characters , and other assorted goodies . Surely , if you want to just play all by your lonesome , there are a lot of options to keep you going for the long haul . When it comes to multiplayer , Mario Kart DS isn't really lacking either . All of these game modes are available to play with multiple DS's and you can even play using just one DS cartridge and multiple systems ! The real enjoyable feature on the game is really the Wi-Fi Connect Mode which allows players to connect with up to 3 other people and play best-out-of - 4 matches based on certain criteria that you decide . It really adds to the longevity of the game and will continually have you coming back for more . The development team has decided to keep the classic control scheme for this version of Mario Kart , only utilizing the touch screen for menu-navigation . However , they did utilize both screens on the system , using the top for classic display and the lower screen as a map which displays your position in the race as well as any items that may be headed towards you . This adds so much strategy to the game that it's insane and hard to imagine going back to a single-screen setup ever again . Additionally , the game features 32 different maps , 16 of which are classic maps from every previous game in the Mario Kart lineup ! I can't begin to explain how much fun it is to go ack and play Choco Mountain or Moo Moo Farm from the N64 version , or even Mushroom Bridge from DoubleDash ( No DK Jungle though . . . drats ! ) . That being said , the new maps aren't lacking much . They are very well designed and feature several little shortcuts to help you out if you get a little behind . Overall , this is a great game ! It has the creativity that one has come to expect from Nintendo with the pleasant surprise of lasting appeal , something that is often missing on handhelds . This game is a blast ! Recommended for Mario Kart fans and anyone looking to justify their purchase of a Nintendo DS . 5 out of 5 Stars
      • 116 4  Sure , any company could put some wannabe mastcot in a kart and say this is a bangin ' game . But Mario Kart is the undisputed champ of the genre , cause of the super smooth controls , inovative tracks , and ' zangy ' powerups that'll addict even the most hardcore gamers . Sure , it's a little bit of a repeat of the other Mario kart games that have Mario's buddies tossing shells , and using mushrooms on rainbow colored coures , but you'll be challenged be the compitition just like you were in Grand Turismo . You get put into sixteen totally fresh tracks and replay some of the great ones like Rainbow Road , and Bowser's Castle . Don't worry , we still have the always fabulous battle-modes , and of course , it's Wi-Fi if you want to be challenged . Online matches only have one flaw , you have to accept you aren't the best Mario Kart player in the whole world . And if you are the best player in the world , you can't brag about it to your online buddies , there's no voice chat ! Another flaw is a personal one of mine , there aren't any analog sticks , and no power slidin ' which I love so much from Double Dash . But you won't find a better hand-held racing game that can claim that they're tops over Mario Kart DS !
      • 118 4  Mario Kart DS is a really exciting game with its fast speed and it is loaded with items . Mario Kart DS has tons of cool game modes like the following : Grand Prix , where the player chooses an engine class , a driver , a kart , and a cup to race the CPU in four competitive races ( at first the only engine class the player can choose is 50cc ) ; Time Trials , the player can choose any track he has and practice it until he feels confortable at that track ; VS , where the player can challange the CPU to a race with the players rules ; Battle , where the player fights to stay in the game and destroy his enemy ; Missions , where the player has to complete eight missions before he can fight the boss in that level and the player has to start at level one ; Records , where the player can look at times or trophies to see how good their doing . During the game the player can do cool things like the following : Rocket Start , the player has to press and hold the A button at just the right time to get the rocket start ; Drafting ( new ) , where the player has to be behind the kart to draft and speed around the kart when the player sees white things around his kart ; Drift , which helps when you are behind ( press the R button and right or left on the control pad to preform the drift ) ; Mini-Turbo , alternate between the left and right buttons on the control pad while holding R until the tires burn red then let go of the R button to preform the Mini-Turbo ; Items , press X to throw the item , press the down button to throw the item backwards . Items are the most helpful thing in the world because Nintendo added two new items , the bullet bill and the blooper , the bullet bill will fire the player to the middle ( or some times the front ) of the pack and the blooper will spray ink on the screen to block the player's vision to slow him down ( look at the bottom screen to keep going ) . In the Options menu , there are three things the player can do , they are the following : Settings , here the player can change the sound and turn the locate friend thing on or off ; Edit , here the player can change his nickname or create an emblem ; Erase Data , we all know what that does . There are also two multiplayer modes they are the following : Normal Mode , this is wireless play ; Simple Mode , this is download play . I would recommend this game to players who like Mario Kart and a really fun game .
      • 122 4  Who says the DS doesn't have great games ? Liars , that's who ! And with DS Mario Kart you can say you've got one of the best titles to hit the DS ! And with Nintendo DS now with Wi-Fi Connection , you can play online and enjoy the fun with up to seven other players ! Mario Kart DS , like all the others , features grand prix races for you to race in . Most of them won't be availible until you complete other races , but that's the fun of Mario Kart . The races are not too hard , and they're a load of fun ! Four of these tracks are brand new , but several are taken from previous Mario Kart titles . From the SNES , to the GBA release just a couple of years ago . You can enter cups at 50cc , 100cc , or 150cc . This , of course , is the difficulty level . You'll not only notice your opponents get faster , but they'll get more aggressive as well . There are eight characters with two vehciles each . Well , at first . As you progress through the game you'll unlock more . When deciding on a character you of course are looking at speed , acceleration , etc . but you may also want to look at things like . . . the drifting . . . or their item attribute . A low item attribute will often net you items that are pretty much useless . This is NOT just a rehash of an old game , though . I noted that there are four new tracks , and that it actually combines earlier titles . But there are also new powerups in this one . You now have a Bullet Bill power up which will increase your speed ( and send you temporarily into auto-pilot ) . You'll also be able to fire off a Bob-omb ( that'll really mess your opponents up ) and you can now release a blooper ( those squid guys ) to squirt ink on the screen of your opponents . These new editions are worth it . In addition to the new power ups and tracks , you've also got Mission mode . This will pit you into courses where you'll have to perform certain task to move on . For example , you may need to pass through gates in a certain order . There are six groups with nine levels each . Each group ending with a boss . Now let's move on to the best stuff . The reason a lot of us still play Mario Kart games . The battling ! You can do the balloon battles and shine runners in a single player mode , but not do them on multi-player would be a sin . Mario Kart DS takes complete and total advantage of Nintendo's Wi-Fi usage . So challenge some people ! Getting on the Wi-Fi has great oppurtunities . You can have up to 36 rivals , and you can challenge people all over the world . The problem of course , being you could lose the connection . There's little problems with the Wi-Fi connection , though , and it's much more fun than it appears to be . As you might have guessed , the game looks and sounds great ! It's smooth , like the visuals of the N64 version , only smoother - - not as blocky . The sounds are great and so are the sound effects . And because the DS in Stereo , you'll love it with all your heart . Mario Kart DS is another must own DS title . It isn't just some port of an old game , it throws in a ton of new stuff . So don't think of passing this up by saying , I've got it on N64 ! The N64 version has nothing on this . So grab it ! The Good : + FUN STUFF TO UNLOCK ! + Great Graphics + Great Sound ! + You can play multiplayer with a single pack ! + Fully takes advantage of Nintedno Wi-Fi + Not just a rehash of Super Mario Kart 64 , it's actually it's own title ! The Bad - Your friends and family will certainly feel neglected - - unless they have this game !
      • 126 4  My personal opinion is that the N64 Mario Kart was the apex of the series ( until now ) . Double Dash had much better graphics but was a letdown in so many ways . First they got rid of my all time favorite weapon , the triple shells . Jumping was removed and the battle mode arenas were simply awful . My favorite part of battle mode was sending shells off the second or third tier and letting them bounce around like crazy to my opponents ' dismay . Nintendo removed multi-tier arenas and made shells shatter after one bounce . It was as if Nintendo researched exactly what it was about Mario Kart that I loved . . . and removed it . With the DS version of Mario Kart all is forgiven . Triple shells and jumps are back and the battle mode arenas are vastly improved . I also discovered that the directional pad controls just as well as the analog stick and power slides are a breeze to pull off . There are 32 unique tracks with 16 retro tracks and 16 brand new . The retro tracks are taken from the four previous version of MK including NES , N64 , GCN and GBA . Most tracks are completed overhauled and upgraded for the power of the DS while the GCN tracks are reduced somewhat . The all new tracks are terrific with a lot more moving environments than in older MK tracks . There are a few new weapons , the most unique being a blooper that sprays ink on the screen to obscure the drivers view . Although the touch screen is unused the map on the second screen is a tremendous help for a lot of different reasons . The biggest addition to the game is internet connectivity which I haven't had a chance to try out . The other addition is a series of missions that actually add little to the game except for perhaps honing your driving skills . Players can also play battle mode against Bots if that's what you want to do . It's really not too much fun without a human opponent . Mario Kart was pushed back nearly a year and the extra time shows in the quality of the product . This is a well polished piece of software that delivers a stellar Kart experience . If you're reading reviews to decide whether the game is worth it STOP and get the game . You're only wasting valuable playtime . Now I just need to find some free WiFi hotspots .
      • 127 4  OH MY GOSH , Nintendo really grabs you with this game . Be warned though , you'll be sucked in , you'll lose sleep playing , you'll giggle with glee finally being able to play MarioKart Online . Finally , ever since the first MarioKart release back on the SNES we are given online play - and it's about time : ) There's a great mix of tracks to race here - you'll see some new ones , as well as earlier tracks from the N64 , SNES and Cube Kart games that were previously released . There's just so much going on in my mind after playing this title that I don't know where to start . First off , I have wireless internet & getting MarioKart DS hooked-up took about 1 minute to get it up & running for online play . Even if you don't have a clue how to get started , Nintendo graciously guides you through the process step-by-step . It's packaged with two instruction booklets : one for the gameplay & the other for getting set-up online . Even if you don't plan on playing online ( you really should though ) , the nintendowifi.com website lists all their wi-fi hotspots you can use to play against other human opponents ( You'll see that many are located at McDonalds ) . The gameplay itself is simple and extremely addictive . Just like earlier versions of Mario Kart , in the DS version you choose a rider and a car - each character ( Mario , Bowser , Princess Peach . . . . etc ) has different power-ups , and each car handles differently . There are also unlockable characters once you progress through the game far enough . The framerate is fluid , the animations are bright and colorful , and I've found that there is absolutely no slow-down at all . The music is your typical bouncy / happy marioKart tunes . You can choose to play online , a VS mode , battlemode , timetrial , circuit trial . . . . there are quite a few modes to play through here so even expert power-drifting racers will be kept busy for a long time . Now , with the inclusion of on-line play , this game will never become tired . . . . only your fingers . I'm just so happy to have this game , I'm almost at the point of tears . . . tears of joy ! WooT !
      • 160 4  I and my Grandson each have a copy of this on our DS consols , and have the greatest of fun racing against each otehr . We have a similar habit on teh Wii , for when we are in different locations , and teh simklarity of a number the courses between teh Wii and DS versions of this game means that you can concentrate on the racing , rather than learning a new course . ( Mind you , some of the courses are different , so this problem cannot be totally avoided ; ) So , fun for young and the not-so-young alike . ( I did hear that this game on the DS could integrate with the Wii game ; not tried that yet , but not apparent where this will occur , unless through WFC ? . . . Hmm , more playtime ! ; )
      • 168 4  I remember playing Mario Kart 64 once with a neighbor's kids years ago . Not a big fan of racing games then , I had a lot fun with this game ( especially with the Battle Mode ) and I've been itching for a chance to experience the fun again . Now I can , any place , any time , thanks to Mario Kart DS . Still the undisputed king of handheld racing after its 2005 launch , MKDS seems to take the best of every game in the Mario Kart series and squeezes it all into that little game card , and sticking that nice label on it . Starting in Grand Prix mode , you choose from 3 engine classes , 8 racers , 2 karts , and 4 cups with 4 courses each . And then you're off ! There are more cups , karts and racers hidden in the game but with no cheat codes to speak of , you'll just have to do things the old fashioned way . A map is provided on the touch screen in case you steer off course . While a great gaming experience , you can only have so fun just racing while unlocking stuff . Fortunately , there's so much more to do in MKDS . Aside from racing other players wirelessly or online , you can also enter an improved Battle mode with new arenas , including an old-school Nintendo DS . And then there's yet another mode that has you take on different missions to unlock more missions . To sum it all up , deciding whether or not this is a quality racing game for your DS , it's a no-brainer . This game is rated E for Everyone : Mild Violence .
      • 177 4  The only other Mariokart I've played is the one for the 64 , but I got hooked on that fast - - and this one's even better ! You start with only four available races in three different difficulty levels , but each time you win you unlock new racetracks , characters , and karts , which keeps you hooked , wanting to see what comes next . If you love mario OR racing , you'll love this game . The only downside is its replay value - - once you've unlocked all the characters and carts , it gets a little boring since you have nothing to do but try to beat your top scores . But even then it's still fun to pick up here and there when you have ten minutes to kill . It's great fun to play against other people who have the game too . I've only tried this feature a couple times but it's great !
      • 189 4  This is a great game and i consider it a must have for the Nintendo DS / DS Lite . Some of the courses are really great like the inside of a giant clock , or two ships at sea ( you actually get blasted from one ship to another ! ) + much more . For , me the wireless implementation is the best part . You can easily sign into your WiFi connetion to race against others around the world , very fun and quite addicting ! The game can be quite challenging at times and there are many different combinations of character and carts to choose from , so the longevity / playability is very good . Note that if you finish first in all the cups , you unlock certain other characters like Daisy , Dry Bones , and the robot . These additional characeters are also then available for you to use in the WiFi racing too . Just buy this game ! It has great fast action and is one of the best and most fun games available .
      • 191 4  I bought this for it's online multiplayer capability , I have yet to be disappointed . Every time I multiplayer race I have a good time . The missions are very enjoyable as well . This review may only legally be shown directly on Amazon.com
      • 197 4  After a very slow start with its DS handheld last year , Nintendo finally amped up its software intensity this holiday season and released several very prominent and high-quality titles . Most notably , Mario Kart DS represents exactly what Nintendo was looking for to jumpstart its dual-screen handhelf . This iteration of Mario Kart features everything a Kart-fan could ask for . The inclusion of both brand new and retro tracks prove game has something for the old-school gamer as well . I haven't owned a Mario Kart game since the Super Nintendo version , and driving the tracks I used to play with my dad back before the days of true 3D gaming is a welcome bonus . The controls are intuitive and easy to learn . This game is very simple to pick up and play , but will take a while to truly master . Power-sliding becomes essential at the higher levels since the CPU players will use it liberally . Plus , the map on the touch screen is not just a gimmick ; it can mean the difference between a win and a loss . The ability to see what items the characters are carrying , as well as what items are being shot at you can tell you just what to do in a tricky situation . While they aren't at the forefront of what makes this game special , the technical aspects are topnotch , especially for a handheld . The character models may not be incredibly impressive , but they get the job done . However , the sense of speed is most definitely a staple of the series by now , and Mario Kart DS shows no shortage of speed . Finally , the multiplayer is not only immensely fun , it represents a landmark for Nintendo . As of this writing , Mario Kart DS is one of four games that supports the company's Nintendo Wi-Fi online play . All the player needs is a compatible wireless connection at home or at a wireless hotspot , and he / she can play against players thousands of miles away . It works , it's fun , perhaps best of all , it's free . Mario Kart DS is without a doubt a must-own title for the Nintendo DS . After a year without a flagship title , Nintendo finally found one , and stopped at nothing to not only deliver on its promise of a globe-spanning wireless gaming network , but a wonderful Mario Kart iteration as well .
      • 199 4  Mario Kart was the first game I played on a DS , and it was enough fun to make me go out and buy my own . In general , I'm not a fan of racing games at all . Luckily for me , Mario Kart is a racing game for people who don't normally buy racing games . It's cartoony , accessible , and fun . The series has been around for over a decade now , so most people probably already know what to expect out of this game . It's your favorite Nintendo characters , all racing around various Mario-specific terrains such as Luigi's Mansion and Delfini Square , all the while dodging pitfalls on the road and firing turtle shells , bombs , and banana peels at the opposition . The race itself is only half the fun ; sabotaging the opposition is a huge part of this game . Mario Kart DS is easy to learn but has a lot of subtleties that make it fun to keep playing . It makes limited use of the dual screens on the DS , displaying the race on one screen and a map on the other , but the map on the second screen becomes invaluable for keeping an eye on where everyone else is and what kind of traps are coming your way . The multiplayer support is terrific , giving you the option of playing with friends nearby or strangers online . In close proximity up to eight people can play on one cartridge , although they lose the ability to choose their player if they don't have the game . All in all , Mario Kart DS is a very fun , highly addictive game that everybody can enjoy . It is easy to play with lots of replay value , and the ability to play with friends through the DS download function makes it a fun social game as well .
      • 211 4  Mario Kart is a must-have for all DS owners . It only taks about a week to play and after that it is just as much fun to play it over again ( I have beaten it 4 times ) . Pros : On time trial mode , you can race against the staff members ! It is fun to see which kart you are best with . You can play it over and over agian and it will never get boring . Multiplayer is so much fun ! You can choose trakes from four previeous mario kart games . ( snes , N64 , GBA , and GCN ) The items make it very fun . You can create an emblem to put on your kart ! You can download time trial ghosts from your friends ! There are four engine levels and 8 cups . Cons : If you are playing aginst someone who dosn't own the game , they can't choose a kart ( must be shy guy ) and you can only choose corses from 2 cups . Overall , like I said , it is a must-have .
      • 213 4  I have been a fan of the Mario Kart series since Mario Kart 64 , and I must say Mario Kart DS does not disappoint ! Mario Kart DS returns to the formula that made Mario Kart 64 and all other incarnations of the Mario Kart series so enjoyable while adding innovations of its own . Here are some pros of the game : Pros - + Various Course Levels ( 32 in all ) - Mario Kart DS reprises some levels from the previous Mario Kart installations , including favorites such as Frappe Snowland from MK64 and the famous Rainbow Road . There are also innovative new levels ranging from a airship fortress , a desert level ( complete with the angry sun from Super Mario 3 ) , and a haunted mansion . There are also various obstacles , such as piranha flowers , that try to foil your racing efforts . + Unlockable characters + Graphics - Graphics on this game are great ! They are up to par with that of the N64 , especially considering the size of the DS ! + Mission Mode / Battle Mode - Mission mode is self explanatory , you are given simple missions to complete . Battle mode is like that of the N64 , you battle against opponents in either two challenges ( you have to either pop your opponents balloons or steal their shiny stars ) . + More items - There are more items to do battle with ! And of course old favorites return . . + Wireless / Multiplayer mode - One of the best parts of the previous Mario Karts was multiplayer mode . Now you can play wirelessly with other DS players , and you only need one game cartridge ! And you can also play wirelessly with people from your region or from all over the world ( all you need is a wireless router and broadband internet connection ) ! It's true portable innovation ( sometimes I can't believe I'm playing with players from halfway around the world , amazing . . ) Cons : - Wish there were some more levels - This is the only con , and its not really a con , but just a petty complaint . 32 levels is good enough ( it has double the courses of Mario Kart Double Dash , and has the same amount of levels as Mario Kart 64 ) . However , I wish they would have reprised more N64 levels . . All in all , Mario Kart DS is highly recommended for the DS ! Like all other Mario games , Mario Kart DS takes a classic game and keeps it fresh and most of all retains the fun . Make this one to own !
      • 224 4  This game sums up why I own a Nintendo DS . It's simply amazing ! Before going on , I must warn you , do not buy this game for the online feature alone . While it may be fun , it certainly shows that this is the Big N's first online attempt . More on that later . . . Graphics : Probably the best the DS has produced thus far . It won't blow you away , but it's nice to see those miniscule details . My main complaint is that the shells don't spin , they're simply just moving . Not a big deal , but still . . . Also , Donkey Kong's teeth are ' stuck ' together . Just a little wierd . 9 / 10 Sound : Not unique or anything , but let's just say that it is hard to play the game without the sound on . The game mimmicks surround sound . Nice effect . You can hear anytime a shell or person is comin ' for you , whether in front , behind , left , or right . The characters ' voices are well done , from Mario's ' Lets-a-go ! ' to Dry Bones ' . . . well , whatever sound he makes . . . It's quite humorous to hear someone when they have been ' shrunk ' from lightning . 8 / 10 Gameplay : Amazing ! This game is probably the best Mario Kart to date . There are initially eight characters and two karts ( each ) , with three unlockable characters . There's a total of 32 racing courses , 16 courses coming from the Super NES , Gameboy Advance , Gamecube , and Nintendo 64 . Of course , Battle mode returns , along with a new mode called ' Shinerunners ' ( similar to battle , you just have to collect these stars within a time limit ) . Also , another mode called Missions is available . Fun mode , but short lived . Now on to the online feature . On the main screen , an option for Nintendo WiFi Connection is available . ( On this mode , though , you can only race , you cannot battle . ) It is impressively easy to set up . Good job on that Nintendo ! However , the only way to play someone again is to have their ' friend code ' . And , the only way to know their code is if you know the person , for the code is on their system . Sadly , these are not exchangeable on the Nintendo Forums , although there are sites specifically designed for this purpose . Once a race is established , it is completely lag free . Strangely , you cannot see their ' flames ' from turbo-drifting . And item dragging has been taken out . Why ? No clue . . . . The real meat of the game is in local multiplayer . Even with only one game card , it is still incredibly fun , although the person without the game can only play as ' Shy Guy ' , and only 8 tracks are selectable . If all the players have the game though , the options are limitless ! You'd be surprised how fast the hours go by with this game ! 9.5 / 10 Overall probably the best game for the Nintendo DS . Don't hesitate to get this game , you will not be dissapointed . 9.5 / 10
      • 227 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) For those gamers who's been with Nintendo through thick and thin , there has to be a Mario Kart game for every system ; its just a ruital . All the white-knuckle , nostalgia , turtle-hurl your way that satisfied fans for years is back and sticks to its roots with Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS . Hardcore gamers who felt that Mario Kart Double Dash was not the the true blue exquiste game that we all known and loved can now celebrate ; Nintendo has heard the fans cry . New modes mean new fun in addition to the classic gameplay equals a powerhouse game in Nintendo's DS Line-up . Mario Kart has everything its predecessor had ; the diverse characters , the broad variety of tracks , the weapons such as the banna peel and the star are back , however , there is a difference.Fortunately , change is a good thing is this scenario . Look at your DS screens , yeah , both of them during the races . ( dont crash though ! ) If you observed the rhetorical , the top screen is for racing and the bottom is the map , thus taking advantage of the system's hardware , so the bottom screen will be essential to gamers to view who's in first and if there are any up-coming gauntlets , which can add a new flavor of competition . Adding three new items to the Mario Kart family are the Bullet Bill , Blooper , and the Bomb-omb . Bullet Bill is a weapon gamers usually get when they are at the bottom of the totem pole ; this item tempoary transforms the racer into the ferocious Bullet Bill , setting gamers onto auto-pilot , zooming past your fellow racers . The infamous Blooper is an innovative item ; when used it tempoary blinds the opponent racers ' views by squirting ink onto the racer , thus making it difficult to view the track . Last but certainly not least , the Bomb-omb explodes after a brief period of time , or when another racer comes near it , so gamers do not want to be around the blast radius . The gameplay remains intact ; choose a difficulty level , select a racer , select a car , and choose a cup . All of the courses here are retro and orignal , so expect to be on your guard as you avoid falling rocks in the throwback level Choco Mountain or endeavor not to fall of of Tick Tock Clock . Rest assured that there are unlockable cars , cups , and racers as well . Battle mode is where fun is written all over it . Battle Balloon is where gamers can get the feel of old-school and fight against players or CPUS ( for those who are can't play with real-stock ) by oblierating each other's balloons to the finish . Shrine Runners has gamers collecting Shrine Sprites appearing in stages , which is sort of that 50 - yard dash you used to play back in elementary ; dashing to get the most sprites . Mission mode is where you conduct certain tasks such as collecting coins or driving through numbered gates ; although it gets repetitive fast , being patient enough rewards you with fighting bosses , yes you heard me . Whether it be attempting to knock off Big Bully or racing against Gomboss , it shows that Nitendo is not scared to stick its neck out and try something new . Adding a myraid of replay value is the ability to take the race online via wi-fi because everything is online , no more staying up at three in the morning to see who's best . Although some stages and the number of racers that can compete are limited , it adds competiton since with only four racers , gamers will have to scramble and dive for first place . The only problem Mario Kart DS has is the difficulty of the AI ; sometimes during Grand Prix , gamers are almost at the finish line when suddenly a Spike Shell is thrown at them , thus their victory stripped away . Finding hot spots for the wi-fi connection isn't bad , but I just wished Nintendo could have offered a free wi-fi usb connector to those less fortunate . Above all , Nintendo adds more meat and bones to their series of games . Mario Kart DS , no doubt , keeps the series fresh and fun with each bold-new entry .

      • 230 4  Mario Kart has been Nintendo's most successful racing franchise for the last 14 years . Starting on the SNES along with F-Zero , Mario Kart has been known for item-based Kart racing . During the first generation it was pretty simple level maping and some cool and fun multiplayer racing and death matches . Today it has evolved into a much larger game , but still remains true to its origins . This is the first successful racing game on the DS and the first DS game to support the Wi-Fi Connection . Keep reading for a more in depth review of the game . Graphics - As you can see , the graphics are beautiful on the top screen . The mapping does help a lot , especially when certain items block the view of your top screen and you can only rely on your GPS . Each cart and character is mapped to fit the character's personality , as well as their trademark . Weapon effects , motion blur , and subtle smoke and drift effects really heighten your sense of speed and fury . Level mapping is probably some of the best I've seen in a very long time . Both new and old levels have been remapped and are very creative . No two levels really look identical , whereas a large majority of racing games only have a dozen or so tracks and split it up into parts and mirrors to lengthen the game . This looks as good , or even better than the N64 version of the game , even though it doesn't quite stand up to the GameCube version . - 5 / 5 Gameplay - The gameplay is fantastic in the game . Framerate is awesome , motion effects are smooth , and controls are effective adn responsive . Wi-Fi Connection connects very quickly if you have one of the designated routers , and the actual online interface is easy to use and fun . Framerate is strong on all three multiplayer options : online , Wi-Fi multiplayer , or single-card Wi-Fi multiplayer . Single player has tons of levels , great weapons ( and some nice new ones ) , and some new small details like boxes containing items that are instantly usable ( even in conjuction with held items . . . i.e . mushroom ) . Once again you also have races at 50 , 100 , and 150cc . Every aspect of the game is flawlessly executed . - 5 / 5 Sound - This game sounds great . When turned up on full blast , you can really hear the power of the DS and the game sounds even better with headphones . With the headphones on ( some nice good noise cancelling ones preferbly ) you really feel the chaos around out . . . the shells flying past your car , the 2 or 3 or 4 cars drifting behind you in the same ideal line as you , the sense of speed as you zip by the other racers ; it all sounds amazing . - 5 / 5 Replayability - Endless . You have single player , where you can continually try to get higher ranks on your Gran Prix , or beat your ghost on Time Trial . You have single card multiplayer up to 8 people , so if you have copy of the game , 7 of your buddies can download play you in a race to see who's the best , so there is no excuse not to have them try it . You have multi-card multiplayer for your friends that have it and want to challenge you on the spot . You also have the Wi-Fi Connection which connects anyone with a wireless high speed connection ( search online for compatible routers ) and a copy of the game . There are matchmaking rounds as well as friends rounds , and you can choose how hard your opponent is . It makes it both fun and fair , as well as extremely satisfying . Everything plays up very well on the Wi-Fi Connection , and I was plesently surprised on how well everything was . It did take Nintendo almost a year to set up , but it was well worth the wait . I haven't had a chance to try out Tony Hawk's American Wasteland , but I'm sure the online is just as acute . - 5 / 5 If I had any complaints with the game , it is that it doesn't use all of the functionalities of the touch screen or the mic , but the fact that it is ONLINE well than makes up for it . BOTTOM LINE : If you have a DS , you must get this game . Its a great holiday gift for anyone of any age , gender , or interest .
      • 237 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) for $35 , this game provides many hours of entertainment . you can go wrong ! once you win gold trophies for all 4 cups , then you get a mirror class that will allow you to play all 32 race courses as the mirror mode . you can even play with other people via WiFi , although I haven't tried that . There are race courses that let you race inside a pinball machine and inside of a clock . There are total of 32 race courses in this game . plus the mirror mode , you get 64 race courses . the price you pay , it is like fifty cents per race course . what a bargain . pros : nice stereo surround sound . nice graphics . new weapons . can play the retro SNES , N64 , GameCube courses . cons : play the game intensely with eyes about a foot away from the screen can strain the eyes . the graphics sometimes can be a bit pixelated . the A button and the X button a bit hard to press simultaneously . If Nintendo publishes a Mario Kart DS Track II , then it will be one more purchase I make on Amazon .

      • 240 4  Alright folks , I'm not going to waste your time describing all of the ins and outs of this title . Suffice it to say , if you've played any MarioKart title on any system out there before , and have enjoyed it , stop reading this right now and go out and get this game ( and the DS to play it on if you don't already have it ) . This game takes everything great about the franchise and concentrates it into pure addictive fun in portable form . For those of you who were dissapointed with the Gamecube version ( speaking for myself here ) , fear not - the controls are much more in line with the ( previously my favorite ) N64 version . That is , you have the defensive tools at your disposal - holding items behind your cart to cover your rear , the 3 rotating shells make their appropriate return , the slide gives you a little jump action , etc . Before I got the game , I was concerned that it would be hard to pull off powerslides with the D-pad as opposed to analog control , but it is quite easy to execute them ( perhaps a little too easy , as you don't start to spin out if you hold in one direction for a while ) . As others have stated , the bottom screen adds a whole new level of strategy as you can time your drop behind items for maximum efficacy , and see when something is coming for you , where coins are located , etc . As far as playability is concerned , everything is spot on ( the GBA game was decent , but this is like night and day ) . The N64 version stole much of my college education time , and this little tiny cart is likely to steal even more , post-grad . Just think - you don't even have to get out of bed to play a course or two . If only I had friends that had DS's . . . I guess I'll have to go make some online ! Highly recommended .
      • 242 4  I'm terrible with sport or sport related games . Yet despite that I have a love for the Mario Kart series simply because it's always been just pure fun ! This game is no different , and improves on the formula by including the long awaited online play , and best of all , there's no charge for it ! ( Pay attention Sony , Square and M $ , free online ! ) The game play really hasn't changed all that much from the GBA edition , the player selects one of a handful of classic Mario characters and then chooses between two carts , then participates in a series of themed race tracks . The game has two modes , nitro , and retro . Retro collects a handful of fan favorites from previous games . Disappointingly a couple of them seem pretty similar to the new tracks , but there's still enough different to get excited about . I haven't really learned the tricks to this game yet , the ones you have to master if you want any hope of competing on even ground in 100cc and 150cc , like how Double Dash had the skid maneuver which allowed you to build blue flames that would boost your speed . . . 100cc and 150cc is where things get really hard , and mastery of this clever racer does take some doing . I haven't toyed with the online stuff yet , but it's there and it's free , and you can't beat that . The game does not appear to make much use of the touch screen that I have found yet but I think that's a good thing , as the second screen is somewhat of a distraction in this case . The game therefore plays almost identically to the SNES original . Graphically the game surpasses anything that I've seen on the DS so far , and is on par with the N64 edition . It's nice to the pixilazation the DS is notorious for brought to a minimum , it's barely noticeable . Best of all there are no framerate issues , and minimal clipping . Nintendo did a great job here . The music is kind of age old traditional midi , and not as good as the GCN edition , but its still one of the better sounding DS games . In all no DS owner should pass on this ! Though not much has changed game play wise , and some of the tracks may be just rehash , its still one of the better installments of this series !
      • 276 4  Pros : - AWESOME graphics - Lots of characters to choose from , like originals such as Mario , Peach , Toad , Yoshi , Luigi , Dry Bones , Wario , and Bowser , and new ones , like Daisy , Waluigi , Rob , Donkey Kong , and Shy Guy - Unique and fun courses - Multi-player , so you can race friends Con - Is fun for the first few times , but gets sort of old
      • 278 4  This game lives up to the reputation of all the Mario Kart games . Perfect in its portability . A great bargain in that you and several friends can race - wirelessly - on only one game cartridge . The game features all of the beloved characters from Mario's world . The on track pick-ups and hazards are all there . If you've played and enjoyed this game on any of the living room consoles , you'll get a real kick out of the portable version as well . My wife and I enjoy playing the game as much as my son does . Nintendo has some sure fire hits , and this is one of them to be sure . The longer you play the more tracks you'll unlock , which just adds to the fun . There are re-imagined classics and brand new offerings , too . Lots of re-playability . Honestly , if you're a racing fan , you just can't go wrong . Lots of bang for your buck packed into this souped up speedster .

    • 187 4  I've rented dozens of DS games and have purchased about 8 of them , and Mario Kart DS is , in my opinion , the best game current available for the system . The single player is robust , with many , MANY different types of play . Missions , Time Trials , racing against ghosts , Grand Prix , mirred tracks , ect . . There is a spectacular amount of content in the game . The game is also very well polished . No bugs , no crashing . The menu's are very simple . It's amazing how much greatness they can squeeze into that little cart that's the size of a postage stamp . I spend a lot of time playing wireless against friends , and is definately one of the best aspects of the game . You can win by pure driving skill , just like all the other racing games , but what sets mario kart above the rest is that the items opens up a strategic element to the game that very few other racers have . You can win by using your items intelligently , or you can win by perfecting the art of cornering and power boosting . This gives the game a lot of diversity . As you progress through the game , winning races , new characters and carts and classes unlock . This keeps you motivated through the single player campaign . Once you do unlock everything , you will be very pleased with just how much content the game has . The physics and handling of the karts are just right . It is arcade style racing , but yet diverse and technical enough to reward skilled drivers . It's easy to learn , but difficult to master , and thats one of the greatest things about it . The graphics are very smooth , very colorful . The sound effects are great and give it a lot of personality and charm . The wifi play gives the game longevity . I've played a couple hundred wifi matches so far , and im ready to play hundreds more . Don't even both renting the game , just buy it , it will keep you busy for a looong time .
      • 051 4  Take this from a kid's point of view , not some fourty year old couch potato kind of man . After all , children are optimistic , right ? Wrong . I'm telling you the RAW truth about Mario Kart for Nintendo DS . This is one of the greatest games created yet for the DS system . The graphics are wonderful , and it is just overall really fun . You even get to pick your character from a number of Mario and Luigi thingamabobers . You also get to pick your kart A.K.A . car . I recommend this game to everyone . You'll REALLY enjoy it , I swear ! And if you don't , that's crazy .
      • 061 4  As a longtime Nintendo fan I was eagerly awaiting the release of this game and am extremely satisfied except for a few small things that keep this game from being the Mario Kart perfection I was hoping for . Graphics are nicely upgraded with smooth racing action and is on par with what I've come to expect from the Nintendo DS . The controls are simple and intuitive as beginners will have full command of all controls right away . Online racing is a huge addition that keeps the game interesting and fresh . Nintendo really did well by making online play free and easy to set up as long as you have a wireless router . It's very easy to find a match with players from all over the world . Overall , the game is great , but I have two gripes . First , I was very disappointed that there is no online battle mode . Battle mode is probably the best multiplayer mode in Mario Kart but it failed to make it into this edition . Hopefully Nintendo will release a future version of Mario Kart that includes this . Second , I was under the impression that this game had more tracks . Although there are a good number of tracks here I thought that this game contained more .
      • 075 4  Mario Kart DS is the game that hooked me on the DS . I have played this game since it came out and I am still playing it . It's a little hard for me to figure why I like this game so much . First , I have never really liked Nintendo that much , especially the Mario line of games . Second , I don't really like racing games because I have never been very good at them . In spite of these two big issues , Mario Kart DS is still one of my favorite games on any platform in the last several years . The racing itself is approachable for non-racing fans , the races are creative and diverse and the item pickups add an element of strategy that just simply works . So , even if you don't really like Nintendo and don't really like racing games , you should at least try this game and see what you think . It made a believer out of me .
      • 097 4  One game plus two DS equals lots of fun . Yes you only need one cartridge to race against each other as long as you have two DS units . I think that is a huge bonus on this game While it takes some hand eye coordination to control your car on this , it is fairly easy to play . This game has a variety of courses to play on . It has your choice of Mario Characters for you to race as . It is just a fun little game . Easy entertainment with low frustration factor . The downside to this game is that you will stress the joints on your thumb from pressing the button that makes your car go .
      • 103 4  Product review by . Payton Mario Kart I love this game because of the graphics you also get to play multiplayer and I also like that you can get to pick the car & person ! You can find short cuts & new cars that go fast ! This is why I give it 5 stars ! !
      • 105 4  I LOVE this game ! It's the reason everyone I know has a Nintendo DS . I love to bomb a friend or take them out with a banana peel and hear them groan across the room ! You can also play online , but the people there are CRAZY good . I've never won an online race before . . . I play alone just so I can open up new cars and characters . It's a great family game that I can play with my nephew , husband and sister !
      • 218 4  Mariokart 64 got me hooked first , to the point where i wanted to buy the gamecube just for mario kart double dash ! Mariokart DS plays very well , the graphics are detailed and precisely done . I love the addition of old / new characters / stages ! 5 / 5 stars ! ! PLUS online play makes it much more fun and interesting !
      • 289 4  This is one of my first and fav DS games . Fantastic racing except i still dunno how to unlock more tracks for multiplayer . . . Rocks ! !

    • 203 4  I got this game for Christmas , and it is really fun ! I love the way you can play classic tracks and unlock other characters . There are over 30 tracks , which is also cool , and there are all new tracks to do . However , it may be really aggravating just trying to unlock characters or karts . I think racing is really aggravating , but the game is really fun and awesome . There is also a new Mission Mode , and there are two battle modes , Balloon Battle and Shine Runners . A neat thing about the Balloon Battle is the fact that you can blow into the microphone to inflate your balloons . The easiest characters to unlock are Daisy and Dry Bones . Another cool thing is the fact that you can create your own emblem to use on your kart . This game is better than any other Mario Kart , so get it if you have the chance !
      • 141 4  Have this game for the Wii so we wanted for the DSi also . Love it !
      • 271 4  Loved this game on the Wii and decided to get it for the DS too . The kids have been having a great time with it . Totally worthwhile !
      • 274 4  I am a big gamer . I love the mario games . Mario Kart is awesome . Straight forward game and always fun .
      • 292 4  I got this for my wife ( who loves playing Mario Kart on the Wii ) . She has had a blast racing with it . I highly recommend it .
      • 312 4  This game is a BIG hit with all of my elementary school aged children ( 5 - 12 years ) . It is nice to see them all playing harmoniously together . So few of the games we have interest the whole crowd or let them all play simultaneously . Kudos to Mario Kart DS .

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Alright folks , I'm not going to waste your time describing all of the ins and outs of this title .
      • 036 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) For those still on the fence about this game - don't be !
      • 044 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I admit that i don't play a lot of racing games and the ones i've played have been pretty boring , just racing against others or the clock . But with Mario Karts , you'll be racing against other characters of Mario Brothers but the fun part is being able to pick up items and throwing it at your opponent to win the game . It's a really fun game and it's hilarious ! If you're looking for a good game with a lot of action and intensity , then consider Mario Karts .
      • 050 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Take this from a kid's point of view , not some fourty year old couch potato kind of man .
      • 078 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Great game , loads of fun and you can race your friends This game is very similar to the classic Super Mario Kart on the Nintendo Entertainment System .
      • 098 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This is probably the best Mario Kart game ever created . It has so much packed into it that you'll be playing it for hours . I would buy this game even if it were for a console , but the benefit of portability seals the deal . Highly recommended for any Mario Kart fan !

      • 175 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) The only other Mariokart I've played is the one for the 64 , but I got hooked on that fast - - and this one's even better !

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) As you can see from the title of this review , this game is Amazing ! The graphics are the best so far for the Nintendo DS ( thats pretty good ) . The power of Wi-Fi Connection is in your hands . Online action folks and it's better than ever ! This is one of the first games for NDS to be online enabled . Looks like Nintendo did a good job . Mario Kart DS has a new missions mode as well . It's sort of based on Super Mario 64 except that you drive a cart . At the end of ever mission , there is a boss to beat , race , or whatever . My favorite thing about this game is the Battle mode . I just love the Balloon Battle . I don't want to spoil it for you so . . . get the game ^ ^ . It is now time for a list of Pros and Cons . . . First off . . . Pros ! - Great graphics - Nice colors - New missions mode - Unlockable Karts and Characters ( Yoshi is awesome ! ) - Wi-Fi Enabled ( THATS RIGHT ! ONLINE TIME ! ) Free by the way . . . - Ability to go against seven of your other friends with only one game card ! ( eight players in total ) - Just good old throwing bananas and shells action . - FUN ! ( by the way , no loading times but you should already know that ) Cons > . - Not enough circuits . . . 32 I believe right now . It could use some more . - My sisters keep bugging me to play it = P - That's all the problems I had . . . So as you can see , this game is awesome ! So buy it for your children or for yourself or even for your parents . . . its great for all ages and isn't hard to play . By the way . . . MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY ! Oh yeah , can you kids spell a bit better ? There is something called school and you should go to it ! Your reviews are hard to read . . .

      • 081 4  This is a great game for the DS ! It is very fun , ( to the point my mom wants to play with me ! ) , and can be played by all ages . Pros . Many characters , I think there are fifteen . LOTS of carts , three per character . The regular , the alternative , and the special . You can play with others who have Mario Kart , or those who don't through DS Download Play . But those without the game have to be Shy Guy . Four modes ; 50cc , 100cc , 150cc , and 150cc Mirror ( Where they reverse the courses . ) Cons . NONE . Nada . Zip . Zilch . I would recommend this to anyone .

      • 200 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario Kart : Super Circuit just didn't do it for me . Maybe it was the graphics , or the tracks . . I'm not sure . What I am sure of is that this game is great . Grand Prix mode has a lot to it and can get quite challenging ( 150 cc ) and VS mode allows you to practice on any track or tracks you want . Multiplayer is a ton of fun , with frantic racing as well as the Balloon Battle and Shine Runners games . UP TO 8 PEOPLE CAN PLAY WITH ONE GAME CARD ! Multi-card play is also supported . Of course , the cardinal feature that everyone is talking about is online play . Nintendo did a really great job with the interface , the only things to be desired are the ability to match up to people of your choice and a lobby area where gamers can chat . Aside from those things , the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection makes it easy and fun to take your game online . This is the best DS game I have played so far , and I think it is a must for all DS owners . Did I mention the great 3D graphics ?

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) God i never thought I would see a perfect video game ever again like The Legend Of Zelda : Ocarina Of Time for the nintendo 64 .
      • 015 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) MARIO KART DS This the game of the century ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
      • 019 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This game is so addicting and so much fun .
      • 025 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) God i never thought I would see a perfect video game ever again like The Legend Of Zelda : Ocarina Of Time for the nintendo 64 .
      • 064 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I am a huge huge huge PSP fan . However , that being said I do own both systems and when I picked this game up today , I couldn't put it down . This game is way more than any other console installiation of Mario Kart . The career mode of this game is still the same . You start off on 50 cc and try to beat the first cup , and you unlock one of the new 30 courses of this game and you also unlock new speed classes , 100 cc and 150 cc . The graphics for a handheld game are great , the character models , weapons and courses are very clear and colorful . There are 8 characters to choose from , just like the SNES and N64 games . You can race with Mario , Peach , DK , Bowser , Luigi , Toad , Yoshi and Wario . Along the way you unlock 4 more characters , Dry Bones , Daisy , Wario and Robot . You can unlock up to 5 cars for each person so each character has 7 cars , although you need to be certain people to play with certain vehicles . As far as the weapons go , there are three new ones , but gone are the specials from Double Dash . This game seems like a slimmer version of Double Dash , the Gamecube version of Mario Kart , and it is in characters and vehicles . But there is one thing that makes up for this , multiplayer . This game can play 8 way multiplayer with only one game card . Even better , this game has online ! ! ! Set up is minimal as long as you are in a hotspot . The way it works is there is a tournament with four players . There are four races in the tournament with a points system . Each race , a different person selects a course to race at . Overall , this is a must buy if you own a DS .
      • 113 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Anyone who owned and loved either an SNES and N64 is almost undoubtedly sure to love the Mario Kart series .
      • 125 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) My personal opinion is that the N64 Mario Kart was the apex of the series ( until now ) .
      • 223 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This game sums up why I own a Nintendo DS . 9.5 / 10
      • 229 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario Kart has been Nintendo's most successful racing franchise for the last 14 years .
      • 285 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) As far as handheld gaming consoles go , I'm a newbie . I grew up with the original NES and SNES ( which I still play on , and this January , I decided to go ahead and buy a DSi . Mariokart was the first game I bought to play , and I love it . I've always been a racing and platform gaming freak , so I was just drawn to it . I've had this game for about three months and I STILL love playing on it . There are tons of unlockables ( courses , characters ) and you can always go back and race again and try to beat your score . I've only played around with the multi-player aspect of this game once , but it seems to offer challenges and a lot more fun . If you're into the racing genre of games , and liked the previous versions of Mariokart , this is definitely worth checking out , I loved that they had different tracks from older versions of this game too ! All in all , I think it was worth the money I paid for and will continue to enjoy this game .

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Great game , lots of fun and racing challenges for youngsters and adults alike . I bought 3 new games for my 7 - year old daughter ( Princess Peach and Dogz too ) for X-mas , but this game was her favorite despite the fact , that she was having hard time winning races . As a mattter of fact , she didn't get 1st place yet in any of the races , and I thought she would be frustrated and decided to quit . However , she likes the game and continues to challenge it . I just wish , the game had different levels ( like novice ) of play , so it would satisfy first comers and attract them to play on higher elevel .

      • 102 4  This game is addictive , and it's a blast . The graphics are gorgous , the music is great . It's not very deep , but that's what we have to expect from games like this , but even though it IS a racing game , the added missions give you more for your money . My only complaint is that the WiFi mode is very limited .

      • 171 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) We all love this game ! ! My husband and I and our two boys ages 8 and 11 have been playing this game for the past year and we think it is a blast .
      • 246 4  I purchased this game as a Christmas present for my nephew and he loved it . He told it's his favorite game and he loves to race ! My sister says she almost has to pry the DS out of his hands to get him eat dinner . I'm not that big of a gamer and I really enjoyed playing it myself . I though the graphics and sounds were unbelievable .

He was so upset and driving me bonkers about getting it replaced I finally searched and bought a used one from this dealer . My son has been much happier ( Mario Kart is his favorite game ) now . I'm thankful for the rapid delivery and the quality condition of the game . My son uses his case from the lost game to store his replacement game , so everything is settled !

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I have been a fan of the Mario Kart series since Mario Kart 64 , and I must say Mario Kart DS does not disappoint !
      • 017 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I play this game mostly ! ! ( Oh yeah ) It is SO much fun . You race against other people on their Nitendo Ds ' and it is totally fair . You won't get fustrated . ( Believe me . ) I really hope my review helps ! !
      • 021 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I got a DS when they came out , and the only game i had was Mario 64 DS . That got old when i was beating it for the fourth time : - ) . I got this game , and it is SOOO addicting . The courses are wacky , from relatively easy but fun courses like the Yoshi Circuit to rip-your-hair-out-impossible tracks like Sky Garden and Rainbow road . The racers are amazing , being made up of Mario and friends , and there are tons of cars ranging from regular Karts to Construction Cranes . It can be hard to unlock more courses , but it's just fun anyway - not to mention that there are really fun Battles .
      • 046 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I like very much most of the races , plus you can go to multiplayer and play with other kids that have Nintendos but don't have the game . One can unlock different levels . and one can play it over and over again . I recommend this game very much .
      • 062 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I only got this game cause my little cousin had it and he begged me to try it . The graphics were amazing and it was easy and fun to boot . I've always had a hard time with racing games being too short , this one was not there are 32 + tracks and plenty to do . Multiplayer is fun . . . blow into the mic if you don't want to lose in one hit . . . I had to figure that out . Also I've played every mario kart game to date and this is the best overall . Save for Mario 64 DS , this is one game to try on DS .
      • 066 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario Kart , comes fully loaded with classic characters , a bunch of new tracks , and a wireless multiplayer mode that's to die for . With a veritable buffet of racers , courses , modes , and multiplayer options , Mario Kart DS is a must play for any Nintendo fan and a requisite for any DS owner .
      • 089 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Even though I am a member of AARP , I still love this game ! ! The controls are easy to master . One important point left out by some reviewers - - you don't need the stylus to play the game , just the buttons . This means it can be great fun in tight airplane seats on bumpy flights where stylus use can be troublesome . Lastly , the difficulty levels are just about right - - as you improve the challenges increase to match .

      • 202 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I got this game for Christmas , and it is really fun !

      • 233 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This is truely the best Mario Kart , or DS game in general . There are a lot of courses to race in from classic ones from previous games , to ones made especially for this game . The major difference in this game is that the cpu racers actually put up a fight . In previous games , all they did was keep up with you and throw bananas . Here , the use turbo slide , shells , you name it . It will definately push you to the limit . To that person who said this and ds sucks , we don't really need to hear about the psp anymore . This game is also way better than the GTA games , which are disgusting and retarted and could contribute to the collapse of American society . In other words , GTA SUCKS ! Yes , I'm a teenage boy in the U.S.A and I think GTA sucks . Whatcha gonna do ?

Mario Kart is always about multiplayer mode . Once you finish the Championship mode you never go back and keep playing multiplayer . • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I remember playing Mario Kart 64 once with a neighbor's kids years ago .

That was until I played it on wii at a friends house and found out if was a blast . I had to search out and wait for a sale or used one and it paid off I found one . What fun it is . Not quite the same as wii of course but still very much fun and I am much better at staying on the track on this one but still not winning very many races . Practice makes perfect . I was also recommended this by another adult DS player who read my Listmania and responded I needed this and one more game to round out my adult collection . She was right . Now I just have to sell a game as I have a rule one comes in one goes out . Guess I had better hurry and solve Professor Layton and the curious villiage . Who knew that one would be so hard . Yikes I've logged 10 hours not all at once and seem to be getting no where . Oh well different story . Get Mario Kart it is tons of fun .

I've played 5 Mario kart games ( Ds , Double Dash , Super Circuit , Wii , and 64 ) and this is my favorite . The graphics are great for a Nintendo Ds game . The best part is how many tracks are in the game . There's like 24 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Everyone will love this game . I usually hate racing games , but somehow this one got to be one of my favorites . I think there's about nine characters in total . There are so many karts to choose from . Don't waste anytime ! Buy this right away ! ! ! ! !

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I've had my DS almost since launch , and I have about 5 games so far , but Mario Kart DS is by far the best .
      • 003 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) As of this writing , Mario Kart DS is hands down the absolute best game available for the DS . As one would expect from the long running series , Mario Kart DS allows you to play as Mario and co . in a series of go-kart races . The gameplay mechanics will feel like putting on an old glove for longtime fans of the series , while newcomers will have no trouble getting into the game . As you progress through the various circuits , you'll find bonus tracks , karts , and characters to unlock as well , which adds a nice amount of replayability to the single player mode . Along with the new tracks , there are some retro tracks available as well taken from the past incarnations of the series . The real main attraction of Mario Kart DS however , is the fantastic Wi-Fi multiplayer mode . There are only a handful of DS games which support Wi-Fi capability , and none is better at it than Mario Kart . This is where the real meat and potatoes of the game lies , and you'll have a hard time putting down your DS after getting a taste of it . The game looks , sounds , and plays phenominally , and all in all , Mario Kart DS is yet another excellent , must own , first party title for the DS , and the Wi-Fi options make it even more of a smash .

      • 058 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I've had my DS almost since launch , and I have about 5 games so far , but Mario Kart DS is by far the best . • 074 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario Kart DS is the game that hooked me on the DS .
      • 149 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I think Mario Kart DS is an excellent game to buy . The tracks are a lot of fun , but some of them look almost exactly the same . I wish there was more characters , they hadn't bothered to add in Toadette or Birdo , some of my favorite characters . The graphics are okay , but I expected them to be better . The online Wi-Fi connection mode is very fun , but you can't do all of the tracks online , you can only do about half . Overall , this is a pretty fun game , but I would reccomend Mario Kart Wii more . It is more addicting .
      • 196 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) After a very slow start with its DS handheld last year , Nintendo finally amped up its software intensity this holiday season and released several very prominent and high-quality titles .

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I've rented dozens of DS games and have purchased about 8 of them , and Mario Kart DS is , in my opinion , the best game current available for the system .
      • 060 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) As a longtime Nintendo fan I was eagerly awaiting the release of this game and am extremely satisfied except for a few small things that keep this game from being the Mario Kart perfection I was hoping for .
      • 086 4  Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this ? ) This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I had played the original version of this game as a kid so when I bought my DS I decided to buy the DS version of MarioKart to play when I got fidgety . It's great to play though it seems more challenging than the original . The missions ad an extra element of challenge which I have yet to master but it doesn't stop me trying . I saw a kid playing the same game one day and he had gone through all the missions so it really goes to show that this is a game for anyone .

      • 194 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I have to be honest , i only bought this game because i wanted to try my ds online . When i first turned the game on that was the first thing i did . It was a lot of fun . Then i went to the regular gameplay , it was fun also . You cant do all the stuff online , but you can earn new cars to drive with . The only thing i have to say , is when racing online , try to race more than one person , because once they start losing they will drop out of the game causing you to lose . Even after going through ll the trouble of almost winning for the first time . Would definitely reccomend for the online play , and playing against your friends .

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) It seems just like yesterday when the original Mario Kart made its debut on the SNES in 1992 .

      • 123 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) It always seems to me that racing games for video games have came close to being all one in the same . Nevertheless , that hasn't meant that all racing games are all bad . That has absolutemy been the case with Mario Kart from Nintendo . Since the franchise debuted in 1993 for the Super Nintendo system , it has been recognized as one of the most popular racing games in video game history . Since then , Mario Kart has really scored big for systems like the Nintendo 64 , and the Nintendo Gamecube . Now , it is set to show again on the portable video game market . Last time , it really felt a little dismal with Mario Kart : Super Circuit for the Game Boy Advance . Can this one score better ? Yes it can . Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS handheld , is a highly received game that again finds Mario and his pals into the extreme worlds of racing . This time , the time goes even better than before . The game features 2 seperate gand prixs than just 1 . The main surprise is the retro grand prix with tracks from all the earlier Mario Kart games , which is great for anybody who hasn't played the earlier Mario Kart games , especially the ones for the Super NES and Nintendo 64 . There is also the DS grand prix's , with 16 new and exciting tracks to play . This time , there is also more to unlock in this game including characters like Daisy , and Dry Bones who recently made a comeback on Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Party 7 for the Gamecube , and delightful new cars to race . The game also highlights the wi-fi connection for players to race interactively head-to-head . The control and the gameplay is juat amazing , and a great improvement in the portable edition . The sounds and the gameplay is great and just incredible fun to play . If you own a Nintendo DS game system , this is one game you can't help but buy . Mario Kart DS is a pure racing delight for all gamers , and adds on to what Nintendo has built behind Mario and friends ' checkered flag . Graphics : B + Sound : B Control : B 1 / 2 + Fun & Enjoyment : B + Overall : B 1 / 2 +

      • 198 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario Kart was the first game I played on a DS , and it was enough fun to make me go out and buy my own .
      • 241 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I'm terrible with sport or sport related games .
      • 265 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) As a fan of the SNES and N64 version i got this with high expectations . Though i prefer the N64 version the best , the ds version is still very good . The only complaints i have is that there is a design flaw on one of the tracks where if you get hit by a giant pinball in a particular section than you will crash and get hit again and it practicaly never ends . Also if you want to beat the game on 150cc than you have to have drifting mastered . If you dont take advantage of the sharp cornering and boost you get from after the drift at every corner than you wont rank in the top 3 . Though i have perfected it , its still a big challenge and i cant imagine a little kid having the patience or skill to perform such an advanced technique . Sure all you have to do is hold the R button down but the timing is everything . Overall this game rocks , just buy it .

      • 286 4  As far as handheld gaming consoles go , I'm a newbie .

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario Kart DS is a really exciting game with its fast speed and it is loaded with items .
      • 034 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This is the one game you have to buy for your DS . It's one of the most fun , and one of the best games . It's a lot of fun multiplayer , and it's also a lot of fun single player . Plus it combines almost all the tracks from previous Mario Karts . Just buy it , you need this .

      • 159 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I and my Grandson each have a copy of this on our DS consols , and have the greatest of fun racing against each otehr . ( I did hear that this game on the DS could integrate with the Wii game ; not tried that yet , but not apparent where this will occur , unless through WFC ? . . . Hmm , more playtime ! ; )
      • 190 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I bought this for it's online multiplayer capability , I have yet to be disappointed . • 254 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I really enjoy Mario Kart ! I never have been in to Mario until I picked up this game . You can play it over and over again without being bored . The only thing about it is that at times it can be hard for kids to get a very good score on the upper levels . However , with a little practice , it's a lot of fun !

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario Kart DS is a return to the classic style of Mario Kart play ( one racer per Kart , which the GameCube's Double Dash departed from ) and it plays like a classic Mario Kart game .

      • 063 4  I only got this game cause my little cousin had it and he begged me to try it .
      • 067 4  Mario Kart , comes fully loaded with classic characters , a bunch of new tracks , and a wireless multiplayer mode that's to die for . With a veritable buffet of racers , courses , modes , and multiplayer options , Mario Kart DS is a must play for any Nintendo fan and a requisite for any DS owner .
      • 076 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Compare to Mario Kart Super Curcuit the DS Mario Kart just totally blows it up because of the graphics . Once when I've had it for maybe a month I got bored of the same characters and same karts . So I kept on winning trophies then I somehow unlocked a new character , his name is Dry Bones . After that I got something that said I could use 7 karts for each character . So that day not too long after I go Dry Bones I unlocked another character Her name is Daisy , She's just as annoying as Peach . So after a while I unlocked another character ! his name is R.O.B . he's a robot . Then I got Something that said I could choose up to 36 karts for each racer . Then finally I got the racer I really wanted , he's Waluigi ! They also made another rainbow road ! it has all these twists and turns . There aren't many more tracks .

What I can tell you is that it is fairly easy to learn the basics and pretty engrossing once you get to the higher difficulty levels . I am not very good at the trick to generate quick bursts of speed while drifting so it's quite challenging . The broad assortment of characters and unlockable vehicles is nice , and there are many different kinds of track .

      • 264 4  Definitely one of the best Nintendo games , and it translates great to the DS . They did a great job of mixing in some older tracks with the new ones , sixteen in all .

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario Kart DS is one of the few good ds games that are out there . it just rocks . Also here are some tips . If you're doing multiplayer with someone , when you start , keep pressing the A button but don't press it until you get to 2 cause it goes 1 , 2 , 3 , go and you will get a short but sweet speed boost . Also if you get squirted by those octopus things , look at the bottom screen to help you focus because it's sorta like a map and you can actually see where you're going then turn back to the top screen when the goop comes off since sometimes it's no use looking at the bottom screen all the time because you see more action if you look at the top screen . I hope you enjoy this game .
      • 030 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This game is a lot of fun for any age person . It also is challenging enough for thos avid gamers , especially the missions section . I love it .
      • 056 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) First of all , this game is amazing , once you start playing you will be impressed and won't let go till the DS is out of battery . I really like Mario Kart games , but I didn't like MKDD that much and I was a little worried about this one , but it turned out to be great . It's almost the same as MK64 and a little better . . . If you like MK64 , you won't regret this one at all .
      • 096 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) One game plus two DS equals lots of fun .
      • 129 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) I bought this for my grandkids , age 7,9,11,13 , & 14 and it gets a good review from all of them . There is lot of noise and laughter when they play so I think that makes it very good . I personally have never clicked a wii button , but love to see happy kids ! ( The overall 4 stars is only because sometimes they tend to argue a bit . )
      • 215 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Great game , lots of fun and racing challenges for youngsters and adults alike .

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario Kart has always been a brilliant series . From the classic , simple-yet-eternally-playable Super Mario Kart through the newfound 3D chaos of Mario Kart 64 , to the new-retro mix of Super Circuit for GBA to the co-op fun of Double Dash , Mario Kart usually doesn't disappoint . What's more , every game offers a slightly different experience . It's never more of the same , because each game has its own unique feel . Mario Kart DS is another in this line . The game is 3D , but it also pays tribute to games of the past in the Retro circuit with courses from all four previous games . Which mean that there are 8 2D tracks from Super Mario Kart and Super Circuit . And 8 blasts from the not so distant past from Mario Kart 64 and Double Dash . That's 16 courses , right there . And on top of that , there are 16 new courses designed for this game . Yes , that's right , 32 tracks . The most amazing amount of tracks isn't enough , though . There are plenty of characters . The list as it stands is Mario , Luigi , Donkey Kong , Bowser , Princess Peach , Yoshi , Toad , Wario , Waluigi , and the unlockable Daisy , Dry Bones , and even a super secret ROB for all you retro-fans . And each character will eventually get a total of 7 karts each , giving you a massive choice for customization . But customization doesn't end there . Mario Kart DS offers a symbol editor that will allow you to create a custom emblem in a stylus-powered paint program . While normally I don't care for such things , the stylus makes drawing and editing extremely easy . And the emblems have a use , which I'll detail later . Mechanics in game have changed little . You can go forward and back , fire weapons , hop with R , and powerslide through turns . The powerslide is important , especially in the 100 and 150CC grand prix mode , unless you want to come in the middle of the pack . Weapons are still incredibly useful , and you still get the best ones when you're losing . Lightning bolts and blue shells can truly be equalizers , and the new Bullet Bill and Blooper are unique , clever , and fit in very well with the mechanics of the game . The GP mode is a staple of Mario Kart , but there's an addition of a mission mode . These special requirement mini-stages lead up to various boss battles with classic Mario villians and are pretty inspired . They start mind-numbingly easy , but eventually become fairly tricky . It's a nice addition to the single-player game . But I imagine that's not what you're playing for . Multiplayer . Ah yes , Mario Kart has always been a multiplayer game . And never more so than now . You can play with up to 8 people together using the wireless play , and only one person need have a copy of the game ( though the others are stuck with default Shy Guy as a racer , and have no say in courses and whatnot ) . There is the normal races , the standard baloon-destroying battle mode , and a new shine runners game ( not something I care for , but you may ) . The multiplayer runs perfectly , with almost no hint of slow-down . It truly is pretty amazing to see in action , though getting 8 people together with DSs may take some work . Which leads me to the final thing . Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection , WFC , which allows your DS to go online using a wireless router . This isn't too complicated , but outside the scope of the review . So head to [ . . . ] for information about how to go online . The online experience with Mario Kart is pretty wonderful for Nintendo's first online title . You'll be paired with 3 other racers for four races on tracks you choose . Sadly , not all the tracks are available online ( the more complex tracks were left out , probably due to trouble making them run fluidly ) and you can only have 4 players , but it's a great experience to be playing online against Kart racers from all over the world , and it opens up a whole world of ideas for new online experiences . AND , it's FREE . That's more than enough reason to try , if you ask me . I'm sure you'll be able to at least find a nearby hotspot if you live in any moderately populated area , so go ahead and give it a try . Some notes on the online game : your stats ( win / loss ) are kept track of automatically , on a profile that is made up by the game and the DS working together , so keep your DS and your game as a ' set ' if you will . Also , dropping out of a game will net you a loss for every person that was racing . So a full game will net you 3 losses . Other than that , I'm out of thigns to say . Mario Kart is one for the ages , though , and this may be the best one yet . It's worth it , even if you have no intention of playing online . Enjoy your race !
      • 008 4  Mario Kart has always been a brilliant series . • 042 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) Mario games , over the years have been some of the most succesful of all of the systems , and this one is no different . Gameplay : Excelent gameplay . New items , new characters , and four modes is non-stop fun . I have logged atleast 50 hours into this game , and still play more . Even after beating all of the courses once , you have the challenge of beating them all with one star . Don't forget battle mode aswell ! 5 / 5 for Gameplay . Sound / Graphics : Now , we know that nintendo isn't the greatest at graphics , but , these I think are good . They have put gameplay first , which I think is fine . There is one glitch I found with the graphics , that sometimes people dissapear . But it's kind of funny . The sound was great . nice and clear . You can't mistake a noise for something else . Well-done ! 4 / 5 for graphics / sound Characters / Levels : hmm , I think that nintendo should have added about 4 more characters to the game . I also think , that they should have brought back more levels from double dash . Other than that , it's amazing ! Just when you think you know each level , something new happens and you discover an amaziong shortcut ! 4 / 5 for Characters / levels PROS * Wi-Fi makes this game even MORE fun * tons of levels and characters make this game last a long time * High replay value CONS * Online gets boring if everyone leaves during the game .

      • 204 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This is by far the Best DS game ever . It's the best because of how it works . The Grand Prix is neat . You start by choosing wich size engine , then you choose the original characters from Mario Kart 64 . After that , you can choose Nitro or Retro . Nitro are the new courses ( which are ok ) and Retro is the old classics form SNES , N64 , GBA and NGC . Unfornunatly , some of the retro courses have changed . For example , At Mushroom Bridge , you can't go on top of that thing on the bridge . You can now do battle mode with computer players , which I have enjnoyed . The mission mode is pretty fun , until level 3 . It gets really hard . What I'm really upset about , is that the Wi Fi , I can't get it to work . I tried following the instructions , it's just to confusing . Otherwise , this is a great game Graphics : 9.5 / 10 Gameplay : 10 / 10 Retail Value : 9.5 / 10 Control : 10 / 10 Overall : 9.9 / 10

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This game lives up to the reputation of all the Mario Kart games .
      • 023 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) My class took a long trip today in school on a luxury bus , and I joined in on playing Mario Kart with the wireless connection . The graphics are impressive , and the game is great to maneuver , plus it's hard to get bored , especially if you're playing with other people ! My advice would be : If you'd like a great new game , this and nintendogs should be your first .
      • 032 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This game is my most favorite game ! it has racing , Time trials , battles , and more ! If you are looking for a good racing game Purchase the Mario Kart for the Nintendo DS !
      • 101 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This game is addictive , and it's a blast . The graphics are gorgous , the music is great . It's not very deep , but that's what we have to expect from games like this , but even though it IS a racing game , the added missions give you more for your money . My only complaint is that the WiFi mode is very limited .

      • 178 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) My 8 year old grandson loved this so much that I had to buy a DS nintendo for my 6 year old granddaughter so they could play it together as they connect on their DS nintendo systems . It's expensive , but worth the money .
      • 180 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) My boys ( 6 and 8 ) love the different environments and characters this game offers . I think their favorite part is the playback option . They can watch the race that they just finished . It is not too easy for the older one . He is able to win new levels for them both to enjoy .

    • Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) This is a great kart-based racing game that Nintendo knows inside and out . There is a good amount of customization and the characters are colorful & animated . This is a game for all audiences as well . There are tons of tracks that you can play over and over to get the best grade / amount of stars , and multi player and wifi connection makes this game great with your friends / family , and even with people around the world ! I bought this game about 4 years ago and it is still one of the games I play most on my DS . In all , don't hesitate to buy this game . It truly a must-have for the DS and will be a fun playing experience for you and everyone else you decide to race against !
      • 070 4  This review is from : Mario Kart DS ( Video Game ) bought this game for my son's 4th birthday with a few others . Was expecting him to like the crayola more but he is in love with this game . He can't put it down . At first I was worried if he would have the attention span for the game at all but it turns out that it's harder to get him off of it . LOL . Great buy .
