Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S.

  • Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . ( DVD ) This is the most recent GODZILLA movie to reach US shores and it was an unusually fast trip . In recent years fans have had to wait as long as six years for a Godzilla film to make it here . For the uninitiated or new and younger fans of Godzilla here is a listing of all the Godzilla projects in their most current US video titles . There are many spin-off movies such as RODAN , MOTHRA etc . But I have only included the films in which Godzilla himself appears . The spin-off films are listed at the end . The films with the * next to them are true sequels and pick up where the previous films leave off . The ones with the V next to them are currently available on DVD . All Godzilla movies have been available on home video ( mostly vhs ) in the past . First we have the original classic and its sequel . Both were in black & white and fullscreen . They were released in 1954 & 1955 : #1 GODZILLA ( 1954 JAPANESE VERSION currently in US-UK theatres ) GODZILLA - KING OF THE MONSTERS ( 1956 american version ) V #2 GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN 1955 ( aka GIGANTIS - THE FIRE MONSTER 1959 ) * The first series ( in color / cinemascope ) really starts here . It ran from 1962 - 69 . Most had decent effects budgets and were dubbed very well , either in Japan or in the States : #3 KING KONG VS . GODZILLA * ( 1962 / 63 ) #4 GODZILLA VS . MOTHRA 1964 ( aka GODZILLA VS . THE THING 1964 ) V #5 GHIDRAH - THE THREE HEADED MONSTER * ( 1964 ) #6 GODZILLA VS . MONSTER ZERO ( 1965 ) ( aka MONSTER ZERO ) #7 GODZILLA VS . THE SEA MONSTER ( 1966 ) V #8 SON OF GODZILLA ( 1967 ) V #9 DESTROY ALL MONSTERS ( 1968 ) V #10 GODZILLA ' S REVENGE ( 1969 ) V MONSTER ZERO and DESTROY ALL MONSTERS were very science fictiony and had futuristic settings . This upset the plot continuity of later films ( set in the 60s / 70s ) . MONSTER ZERO is set in the 1980s , but the US version obscures this . DESTROY ALL MONSTERS takes place in 1999 in both US and Japanese versions . The seventies series starts here , with much smaller budgets and awful dubbing done in Hong Kong . They all take place between GODZILLA'S REVENGE and MONSTER ZERO / DESTROY ALL MONSTERS . Most are intended for a child audience : #11 GODZILLA VS . HEDORAH ( 1971 aka GODZILLA VS . THE SMOG MONSTER ) V #12 GODZILLA VS . GIGAN ( 1972 aka GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND ) V #13 GODZILLA VS . MEGALON * ( 1973 ) #14 GODZILLA VS . MECHAGODZILLA ( 1974 aka GODZILLA VS . COSMIC MONSTER ) V #15 TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA ( 1975 aka TERROR OF GODZILLA ) * V The recent DVD releases of GODZILLA VS . THE SEA MONSTER , SON OF GODZILLA , DESTROY ALL MONSTERS and GODZILLA VS . HEDORAH have different dubbing than the earlier american theatrical versions . So there are now two versions of each in america . The eighties / nineties films start here . They are in a rectangular widescreen but not the real wide cinemascope like the first series . The plots are connected , each picking up whwere the last left off : #16 GODZILLA 1985 * ( 1984 / 85 ) #17 GODZILLA VS . BIOLLANTE * ( 1989 ) #18 GODZILLA VS . KING GHIDORAH * ( 1991 ) V #19 GODZILLA AND MOTHRA - THE BATTLE FOR EARTH * ( 1992 ) V #20 GODZILLA VS . MECHAGODZILLA 2 * ( 1993 ) V #21 GODZILLA VS . SPACE GODZILLA * ( 1994 ) V #22 GODZILLA VS . DESTOROYAH * ( 1995 ) V Next is the Millenium series . It was shot in the same widescreen as the first series : #23 GODZILLA ( 1998 ) V #24 GODZILLA 2000 ( 1999 / 2000 ) V #25 GODZILLA VS . MEGAGUIRAS ( 2000 ) V #26 GODZILLA , MOTHRA AND KING GHIDORAH : GIANT MONSTERS ALL OUT ATTACK ( 2001 ) V #27 GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA ( 2002 ) V #28 GODZILLA - TOKYO S.O.S . * ( 2003 ) V #29 GODZILLA - FINAL WARS ( 2004 ) V #30 GODZILLA 3 - D ( imax yet to be released ) In addition Godzilla also appeared in the live action japanese TV series REISEI NINGEN ZON ( aka ZONE FIGHTER ( 1973 ) . in the animated Hanna Barbera produced show GODZILLA ( aka THE GODZILLA POWER HOUR or GODZILLA SUPER 90 ( 1978 ) and the animated GODZILLA : THE SERIES ( 1998 ) . Many of Godzilla's films were reedited for American theatres . Most are shorter than the Japanese versions ( only GODZILLA VS . MOTHRA is longer in the US ) and some have scenes with American actors ( like the late great Raymond Burr ) added . Of the films currently available on video , the ones most different from the Japanese versions are GODZILLA-KING OF THE MONSTERS , GIGANTIS - THE FIRE MONSTER ( don't even call him Godzilla in this one ) , KING KONG VS . GODZILLA , GHIDRAH - THE THREE HEADED MONSTER , TERROR OF GODZILLA and GODZILLA 1985 . The rest are pretty much the same as the Japanese versions . Contrary to rumours going as far back as the 60s ; KING KONG VS . GODZILLA has ONLY ONE ENDING . It is the SAME in both the Japanese and US versions . I won't spoil it and tell you who wins but . . . . . . . Both monsters went on to make alot more movies , so do the math . Just a thought : In GIGANTIS - THE FIRE MONSTER , Godzilla is the monster , but he is not called that . In GODZILLA ( 1998 ) The monster is not Godzilla , but he is called that . Go figure . Here are the Toho films that either spun-off or were later connected to the Godzilla series . ( They are in no particular order . The ones with the M feature giant monsters , all the others do not . ) 1 ) Half Human : Story of the Abominable Snowman 2 ) The Mysterians V M 3 ) Rodan ( The Flying Monster ) V M 4 ) Battle in Outer Space ( a sequel to The Mysterians ) 5 ) Varan - The Unbelievable V M 6 ) The H - Man 7 ) Mothra ( The Monster God ) M 8 ) Atragon ( The Flying Supersub ) M 9 ) Frankenstein Conquers the World M 10 ) War of the Gargantuas ( a sort-of sequel to Frankenstein Conquers the World ) M 11 ) King Kong Escapes M 12 ) Yog - Monster From Space M 13 ) DaiGoro vs . Goliath M 14 ) Rebirth of Mothra V M 15 ) Rebirth of Mothra 2 V M 16 ) Rebirth of Mothra 3 M 17 ) Gorath M 18 ) Matango - Attack of the Mushroom People V 19 ) The Human Vapor 20 ) Dagora the Space Monster ( aka Dogora ) M 21 ) Latitude Zero M 22 ) Invisible Man ( not the Universal series with Claude Raines ) 23 ) Gunhed V ( has big robots , but no monsters ) 24 ) The Last Days of Planet Earth ( sort-of sequel to Godzilla vs . Hedorah , has mutants , but no giant monsters in it . ) I hope this list was helpful to young fans .

    • 003 4  This is the fifth Godzilla movie from the Millennium Series ( begun with Godzilla 2000 ) and the first direct sequel from the series . In that regard , it would help greatly if you saw Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and are familiar with it as Tokyo S.O.S . assumes you already know the groundwork . If you liked Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla , chances are you are going to like this one as well . Picking up directly where its predecessor left off , the battle ensues again , this time with three versions of Mothra in the mix . . . the moth and two newborn caterpillars ! The flashbacks to the orginal Mothra movie are a lot of fun too . Overall , the action and special effects , as is always the case with the modern Godzillas , are quite good . The story , while somewhat slim , does have some interesting twists too . From what I understand , the next movie will be called Final Wars and will feature 10 monsters ! Promos for this movie ( that opens in Japan in December of 2004 ) claim this one is the end . Of course , such was supposedly the case with Godzilla vs . Destoroyah from the Hesei Series , so after a hiatus of a number of years , Godzilla will probably be back again . Until then , a high-budget Destroy All Monsters for the new millennium will certainly be something to look forward to .
    • 004 4  Godzilla : Tokyo SOS ( released in Japan under the rather cumbersome moniker Godzilla X Mothra X Mechagodzilla : Tokyo SOS ) is one of the best of the recent Godzilla movies . For those of you who don't like all that pesky plot and character development getting in the way of monster carnage - this is your movie . A startlingly long amount of the running time is devoted to a three way melee between Godzilla , Mothra , and Mechagodzilla , and it's some of the best monster action Toho has ever filmed . What little human plot there is is made a bit more interesting than usual by the presence of Hiroshi Koizumo , reprising his role from the original Mothra . The DVD from Columbia doesn't look as good as it should considering that this is a 2003 movie . There are scenes , particularly near the beginning , of very heavy grain , and there are some truly grotesque moments of edge-enhancement . Purists will be happy to know that subtitled Japanese audio is available as well as the English track . Unlike most of Columbia's Godzilla DVDs , there is a rather substantial extra - a Toho-produced 20 - minutes behind-the-scenes documentary about the special effects . It's pretty interesting , but definately not for casual fans . Also included are some random trailers , including the Japanese teaser for Godzilla : Tokyo SOS .
    • 005 4  this the sequel to godzilla vs mechagodzilla is from what ive heard not the best godzilla but not the worst . what raises this to five stars is that it will be widescreen with original japanese and subtitles and incredibly it will apparently have a behind the scenes feature produced by toho ! this is a major improvement over all other dvds . and it seems that sony is trying to actually make godzilla fans happy the dvds are getting better and better and they are finally getting some old movies along with the new . bravo sony and keep getting the old movies .
    • 006 4  I recieved this film for christmas and I have to say that I was impressed with the special effects . When watching a Godzilla film , one doesn't come to expect a certian technical prowess when it comes to CG work . However , while not ILM quality , the effects here more than get the job done . The opening Jet sequense is particularly stunning , and proabably compromises some of the best CG work in any Godzilla movie . Period . And of course , Godzilla is still a man in a rubber suit , and I must say , he looks better than ever . The movies actng is a bit cheesy and never lives up to the films powerfull score . But this is to be expected . I really dont understand how someone like Roger Ebert can give a Godzilla movie a poor rating because of the effects work . It amazes me how he completly misses the point of these movies . I must say that I was a bit confused by the plot ( despite it bieng used more than once in past films ) but this is proabably due to the fact that I never saw Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla - - this movies prequel . The action is great , the effects spectacular , and the dvd offers the origional Japanese soundtrack . What more can a Godzilla fan ask ? Buy it today .
    • 007 4  This summer , I attended the Chicago premiere of the latest Godzilla movie : Tokyo SOS ! We got there around 9 : 15 and got in line . Lucky for us , the big crowd arrived after we did , so we got good seats . We waited for half an hour , and then the crowd , apparently knowing that the movie would start soon , started chanting gSOS ! SOS ! h Then J.D . Lees , the head of the whole G-Fest thing and publisher of G-Fan , came up and made a short speech about how it was so great that people were getting popcorn after the movie was supposed to start , and that it would begin in five minutes . We waited another five minutes , and then c the TOHO logo ! Plastered up on the screen with all it fs glory ! At that point , the crowd went nuts . Of course , being the civilized person that I am , so did I . The movie started off with a shot of Mechagodzilla ( or Kiryu , if you prefer ) in the repair dock , with all the chords and metal thingies sticking out of him . Then , it immediately switches to a scene of two fighter planed tracking an unidentified object through a thick cloud cover . They try to shoot it down , but they just end up missing . One of the planes takes a picture of it . Back at base , they focus the picture , revealing a familiar shape . gOh , no ! It fs c h The word gMothra h flies onto the screen , followed by gKiryu h and gGodzilla h . Then , the screen blows up in a fiery explosion , revealing the title of the movie . In my opinion , this scene is right up there with Star Wars and the original Godzilla as one of the best opening title sequences in movie history . They really don ft mess around with sub-plots and characters in this movie . After you get past the first fifteen minutes of plot development ( who needs that ? ! ) , it's pretty much just one long , spectacular battle until the credits roll . The battle was probably one of the greatest in Godzilla movie history . At some points in the battle , you just want to stand up and cheer ( which is what everybody did ) . For example , in one part , Godzilla and Kiryu are standing on opposite sides of a building . Kiryu fires a storm of missle around the building at Godzilla , who doesn ft even seem to be bothered the explosive impacts . He then fires his heat ray through the building at Kiryu . Godzilla then runs at Kiryu , who grabs him by the tail , swinging him over his head and into a nearby building . Godzilla , now undoubtably pissed off , blasts Kiryu in the face with his heat ray , knocking him out cold . Wow . This movie successfully combined the e70 fs fun with the e90 fs ray-shooting slug-fests to create the ultimate Godzilla movie . While the original will remain the best movie ever made , Tokyo SOS has totally exceeded my expectations . It fs now definitely one of my all-time favorite movies ! Where can you get a dramatic storyline , non-stop action , and the coolest monsters ever ? One word . Godzilla .
    • 008 4  I've been a Godzilla fan for as long as I can remember . I even love the old series - its cheesiness was part of the fun of it . I thought the 80 ' s / 90 ' s series was pretty good as well . But the new Millenium series is really fantastic . And Godzilla : Tokyo S.O.S . is another fine entry in the series . Tokyo S.O.S . is the only film in the Millenium series which is a sequel to another film in the Millenium series . Tokyo S.O.S . occurs one year after Godzilla vs . Mechagodzilla . Hiroshi Koizumi reprises his role from the original 1961 Mothra film as Dr . Shin'ichi Chujo . The doctor receives a visit from two tiny fairies , who tell him that Mechagodzilla must not be returned , or Mothra will be forced to wage war against Japan . The old man sets out to stop the use of Mechagodzilla - but his young son , who works on the Mecha G ground team , has different plans . Tokyo S.O.S . is probably the third best Godzilla film I've seen . It's well-made , never hokey , and it has a fine score ( by Michiru Oshima ) . Godzilla fans should enjoy it . I did .
    • 009 4  Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . ( Gojira tai Mosura tai Mekagojira : Tokyo S.O.S . ) , the fifth film in the Millennium Series , is a showdown between Japan's three most famous Kaiju . A rare direct sequel , following Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ( Gojira tai Mekagojira ) , this flick features massive Giant Monster Action , with the three beasties squaring off against each other in the heart of Tokyo , much to the dismay of the citizens of Japan . The plot is Godzilla Standard , with the extremely cute Shobijin showing up to warn of a future attack , unless repairs are stopped on Mechagodzilla , and the bones of the original Godzilla ( now being used as the skeleton for Mechagodzilla , ) are returned to the sea . Seeking out Dr . Shinichi Chujo , with Kaiju veteran Hiroshi Koizumi reprising the role he first did over 40 years ago in Mothra , they sing their pretty song and say that Mothra will again come calling to Tokyo in a viscious assult . Secure in the power of Mechagodzilla to repulse Godzilla , the government does not heed their warning . Of course , Godzilla strikes , stomping toy tanks and smashing buildings , and of course , Mothra comes flying in to meet him . But Mothra is no match for Godzilla , and the mighty yet unfinished Mechagodzilla must be deployed , leading to the three-way showdown . Like the rest of the Millennium Series , Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . features some impressive effects while still keeping the Man in Suit feel that is the heart and soul of the Godzilla franchise . Mothra has never looked better , and manages some impressive flying thanks to CGI assistance . Godzilla is looking good also , and his breath-weapon is truly deadly . Mechagodzilla has bulked up a lot since his original appearance almost 30 years ago , and is looking even more fierce . The 3 - Way battle ( actually 5 - Way battle , when the Mothra larva get into the mix ) is smashing , with some nimble feats of dexterity not possible in previous flicks . There is more pathos in Tokyo S.O.S . that I have seen in any other G-Film , and the final stand of Mothra is enough to moisten an eye over her brave sacrifice . The DVD for Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . isn't bad at all , with a wide-screen release and original Japanese with English subtitles available . There is also a nice little featurette with almost 22 - minutes of behind the scenes footage . Definitely one of the best Godzilla DVD releases .
    • 010 4  I got this DVD as an early Christmas gift , it is quite an enjoyable film . I don't know why Kiryu was referred to as Mechagodzilla through the whole movie , when in the first one they called him Kiryu 99.9% of the time . Well the plot is pretty good but to preachy at times , and there are moments when you wish that everyone would just shut up so you can see the big boys going at it . However this movie as many others say is just to set up the epic final battle between Kiryu and the Big G . They threw Mothra into the mix to make it more exciting . WARNING SPOILERS : The movie starts out with the cosmos ( annoying midget Mothra girls ) warning this guy from the original Mothra movie that the bones of the original Godzilla must be returned to the sea because the dead should not be disturbed . The man ( sorry I forgot his name ) goes to the prime minister to warns him that Mothra will declare war on mankind unless the request is not anwsered . The prime minister says that Mothra destroyed Tokyo 43 years ago and says Kiryu is their only defense . Later on through the movie it's everyone discussing the situation , until a giant sea turtle ( Kameobas ) washes up on shore with huge claws marks in it's neck , and everyone knows that it's killer can only be Godzilla . Kiryu in the mean time is under heavy repairs after the whoopin Godzilla gave him in the first movie . That guy ( from first mothra movie ) still argues that Mothra will come and fight in Kiryu's stead . He is still scoffed at . Then the mighty Godzilla rises from the sea , the military is as always helpless against him . Godzilla comes ashore and begins wrecking havoc ( GO BIG G ) , meanwhile that guy from the first Mothra movie ( going to be reffered to as MOTHRA GUY for the rest of this review ) goes looking for his grandson who has dissapered , and soon finds him laying out the Mothra symbol with desks from a nearby building . The sybol attracts Mothra who goes to battle Godzilla . They fight a fierce battle , but Godzilla quickly begins making short work of Mothra ( FYI I don't like Mothra ) , The prime minister soon decides to launch Kiryu to assist Mothra in combat . Meanwhile on Infant Island ( Mothras home ) her egg hatches and to Mothra Larva are born , they quickly head to Tokyo to assist their mother . Kiryu soon arrives on the battle field and begin fighting a fierce battle . Godzilla charges the massive machine but Kiryu flips Godzilla over his shoulder , the pilots think the big guy is out cold and approach him . Godzilla now undoubtedly burning with rage lashes out with his powerful tail knocking Kiryu clear off his feet and tumnling down towards him , Godzilla quickly turns over and lets loose his mighty breath blasting Kiryu right in the face and slamming back , knocking him out cold . Well to make a long story short the Mothra larva arrive and Mothra gets blasted to oblivion , the continue a long battle , Godzilla is eventually stunned and wrapped in silk by the larva and carried off to sea by Kiryu and they desend into the japenese trench . However if you wait half way through the credits you'll hear the mighty roar of Godzilla indicating he is still very much alive . You will leave this movie very pleased I believe even though I was a little upset by the ending . I still believe people will be arguing over if Godzilla was defeated . Personally I think Godzilla is the mightiest being of all Kaiju and was the true victor , although he was flown away from Japan he survived while Kiryu did not , I think Godzilla was the victor , and to me he will always be the victor to me and I really think he was the victor . In conclusion this is a great movie with great affects and I apologize for this long review , the major complaint I have about Kiryu is he doesn't have as much personality as he did in the first one . I give this roughly five stars .
    • 011 4  Let me just say this about Godzilla Movies in general : Forget about trying to understand the plot , if there was one to start with , it gets lost in translation / dubbing to English and none of these Millenium Series movies makes any sense at all . They seem to be an odd mix of fantasy , sci-fi , horror and drama . You really need to take a leap of faith into the Godzilla Universe to sit through an entire movie , the dialog and themes are hard to take . I'd say it probably boils down to nothing more than a difference between Japaneese and American story telling sensibilities . After watching the whole thing , My son and I like to watch it again a time or two , but we jump right to the best Monster battle scenes - that's the beauty of the DVD format , you can go right to the good stuff and pass up all the weird parts in between . That said , the MS movies are absolutely awesome . Compared to the older guy-in-suit Godzilla Movies , the new ones ( 90 ' s - 2000 ' s ) are cutting edge . They have mind blowing special effects , huge sets of cities built with models , and they seem to have a creepy , chilling , & darker look to the night scenes . The behind the scenes part is neat , showing how they shoot the films - just as enjoyable as the movie . If you can get past the bizzare and distractive Mothra scenes ( I just don't understand this monster at all - it doesn't really help the story one bit and Mothra doesn't really seem to have any special powers , or any ability to fight Godzilla except for flying around him and making dust ) and the absolutely goof ball Fairy part of the story line , the special effects of the Mechagodzilla blasting away with the electro-shock waves , missiles , and cannons was unreal , like something you'de see in Japaneese Anime robot cartoons , and the battle scene between Mechagodzilla and Godzilla was so good it was breath taking , I loved it . The detail level on the models used in the movie for the Mechagodzilla and the cities is unbeleivable ! Very enjoyable to watch .
    • 012 4  The difference between then and now in these films can be summed up in one word . . . writing . The originators of this soap opera featuring a giant lizard ( what else can you call it after 50 years and 30 - 40 films ? ) simply wrote better stories , and too often in the 90 ' s and 2000 series , classic set-pieces from the 60 ' s films are just re-worked into a different story and setting . This one uses the final epic battle from 1965 ' s Godzilla vs Mothera as its basis . Been there , done that - literally ( like 50X ) . No surprises here . Also , the modern ( 2000 to 2005 ) G era simply featured Mothra and Mechagodzilla in too many films . Fans , young and old , of the series were almost begging to include a new or updated favorite Kaiju . On the plus side , this film had some of the best effects work in the series - the japanese are really improving their CGI skills , so watch out ILM . And it had some truly excellent miniture city sets . The cityhall building was beautifully made , and I literally , hated seeing the monsters demolish it . Grown Mothra , thanks to some very good CGI , is actually somewhat believable . Larva Mothra looks about the same as it did in the 60s . . . ridiculous and at the same time very cool . Since it's a machine , Mecha-G was always among the more realistic Kaiju but they're bulking him up with so much weapontry in the latest iteration it is basically imobile and a bit silly looking . The plot is really nicely handled . I never got bored , and actually enjoyed the non-monster scenes , which is a problem in many of these films , and also something Honda and his editors handled better than their modern counterparts . The music is understated and appropriate - certainly among the better non-Ifukube scores since Godzilla vs . The Sea Monster . Though there's no memorable melodies , it's subtle , supports the story nicely , and is actually refreshing change of pace over the bombastic well-worn traditional themes . This is one of the better executed modern G flicks all in all but it borrows too much from earlier films and essentially is a rehash . One tires of Toho using the same few monsters in their stable over and over again . And , the same themes , plot elements , and even set-pieces are just given face-lifts . The latest films in the series , like this one , have been executed just fine . But this series needs some new creative blood , badly . This issue of Toho's Godzilla Projects doesn't lie in their execution . It's in the concept phase .
    • 013 4  Despite being a little slow in the middle , this Zilla outing is still fun . The big G does battle again with Mothra ( in both Larva and Adult stages ) and MechaGodzilla , the bionic cyborg made from the original ( as in 1954 ) Godzilla's bones . Lots of technical mombo-jumbo , bur plausable . The battle scenes are great . Look for those wonder twins who are the guardian of Mothra , and of course their cool Mothra song . That's precious . This is supposed to be the last in the Millenium series , but they are working on another Big G adventure . It is rumored to be the last one for 3 - 10 years . Lets hope not . I enjoy these adventures and would like to see them on the big screen . This is a definate plus to any collection !
    • 014 4  I grew up watching these films , I even own a VHS set with Godzilla vs Megalon , Gigan , Mechagodzilla , etc . I had seen a bit of Godzilla 2000 a while back , but after seeing this flick , I'm gonna have to revisit that one , along with the other films a part of the millenium series . I loved how updated it was . Godzilla & Mothra looked great , and the story with the Japanese controlling Mecha G was very captivating . I think there was enough action , as well as plot which is something I don't remember from any Godzilla movies except 1985 . This movie blows 98 ' s US Godzilla out of the water ! Thanks to Toho for distributing another great Godzilla flick , just goes to show these movies aren't dead !
    • 015 4  No other words to say except this is another visually striking epic series in the Godzilla franchise by Toei . The movie delivers it all , good realistic sets , great special effects , no more is Godzilla just a puppet figure worn by some Japanese man , no now using the latest CGI effects and technology , Godzilla is a lifelike , strong , realistic and superbaly powerful being . The plot for this movie might turn of some , Godzilla is the villian and he battles Mothra and Mechagodzilla ( whose primarily been a bad monster ) over Tokyo . Actually Godzilla for the bulk of the movies kicks their butts , and gives one great moment after another . The moment in the movie where Mechagodzilla tries to outsmart , Godzilla for example by hiding behind a building blows up in his face , when Godzilla shoots an electric blast destroying the building and penetrating Mechagodzilla . Wow ! ! ! One note : One critic said its playing in US shore , not true , the movie has not really seen a large release in the US , as is the case with foreign movies , the US primarily ignores them , a shame considering this sci fi epic is pretty cool . Check out the movie .
    • 016 4  This is what gave me hope for the Godzilla franchise now . . . i saw previews and stuff for Final Wars which i assume is probably better , but in this to no real fan is let down . Now , people , it is a Godzilla movie . . . so it's not a huge budget or super CGI blockbuster , but just a movie true fans of the series love . I don't hate any Godzilla movie , being a fan i enjoy then all . My favorite will forever be Godzilla vs . Destoroyah but this has better effects , but so what , i just think Godzilla is bad a $ $ . But just like the heisei series , Godzilla looks powerful , Mothra looks poetic and beautiful ( as they both should ) and Mecha-G never looked better . Please take my advice , watch the Heisei series , in my opinion it's the best but this is a great G Movie ! Long live the King !
    • 017 4  Huge improvement over Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla , which seemed like the same old crap . This one , which is a direct sequel , has more action , a better storyline ( though not perfect ) , and very good special effects . Its the 2nd best G movie of the Millenieum Series behind GMK : All Out Monster Attack . Get the DVD
    • 018 4  I got the movie today ( will not say from where because I got it early ) . I watched the movie right when I got home . It is my 3rd favorite millineum series movie behind G Against MechaGodzilla , and GMK . As far as people saying it is the best Special Effects G movie I dont know it seemed just as good as GxMG and GMK . The movie itsefl was awesome . The battle scenes where off the chain . The battle last about an hour . It's a 10 / 10 Godzilla movie and I definately recommend it if your a die hard G fan . And it could also be a great Christmas present for kids who like Dinosaurs .
    • 019 4  This is one of the best action-filled Godzilla movies ! The sound and picture quality of this movie are outstanding . Director Masaaki Tezuka really puts this movie into high gear . It starts out a little slow , but soon enough the action thickens , culminating in the extended battle scene that seems to take up 40% of the story . Concerning the plot , I think it is adequate , not spectacular - but hey , this is a Godzilla movie - which typically focuses on action rather than on plot or character development . The special effects in this film are very well done ! Kudos to the Asada special effects team ! I think some of the most memorable ( and realistic ) action scenes of Godzilla films are found here . The scenes with Kiryu and Godzilla are just breathtaking . The CGI and digital effects are excellent ; they increase the realism of the film . I like Godzilla Tokyo SOS so much more than the first one , Godzilla against Mechagodzilla . For one thing , Tokyo SOS has more action , better SFX and sound , and more monsters . And don't forget , it has the cute fairies that act as Mothra's ambassadors . The redesigned Kiryu in Tokyo SOS looks and acts more like the ultimate weapon against Godzilla . This movie , IMHO , is almost as good as GMK ( Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah ) . In addition , Toho has included on the DVD a really fascinating , behind-the-scenes featurette . Arguably , this rare featurette itself is worth the reason to get the DVD . If you haven't seen this film , I'd recommend renting or ( better yet ) purchasing the DVD . When you do see the film , don't forget that there is a short scene at the end of the credits . I give this film 4 out of 5 stars . Kudos to Masaaki Tezuka and his cast and crew !
    • 020 4  This has to be one of the best in the series . After being bored with the last MechaGodzilla film , I was pleasently surprised with this one . If the series would have ended after this film , it would have been a fitting ending . Hopfully Final Wars won't disappoint . If your A Godzilla film fan . Don't delay BUY this film .
    • 021 4  When I first rented this from Hollywood Video , I was realy having doubts that it was going to be any good , But I got proved wrong in , what , the first 5 minutes ? This Godzilla movies is one of the best I've ever seen , it even rivals Godzilla : Final Wars ! Godzilla is no good guy in this one . MechaGodzilla is really cool , being the best MechaGodzilla yet , and Mothra is the best mother ever , dying , so her children will live on . And when you see her die , her kids witness it for the first time . seeing their mother die gave them thew energy to help MechaGodzilla take Godzilla down to the botom of the sea . This is a Godzilla movie like not other .
    • 022 4  I can't really explain why I've been a Godzilla fan since the early sixties when the original film first appeareed on American TV . It's just one of those things . But this its the first time I've seen a Gojira film in it's original Japanese . What a difference . Thank you Toho , you crazy guys !
    • 023 4  This Godzillla movie is great . It's about the military people who are trying to repare Mecha Godzilla for he was destroyed in an earlier fight with Godzilla . They send out Mothra and Mecha Godzilla ( or Mecha G , as they would call him ) to destroy Godzilla ! Godzilla destroys Mothra but is webbed by the Mothra larvae which is later hatched from the egg . Mecha Godzilla's circuits go on a rampage and sinks himself with Godzilla right after Godzilla is webbed . ( A guy is also inside of Mecha Godzilla when this happens ) . This movie is exciting to watch and I 100% reccomend it for anybody . An amazing film !
    • 024 4  My Kids watch it over and over . They run around cheering for Mecha-G . The part about the making of the movie , they think that these guys are playing Godzilla because you see them moving the monsters around.Well worth buying .
    • 025 4  This is a great film . The special effects , acting , and music are all great . I Highly reccomend .
    • 026 4  Kaiju Eiga fans are in for a treat with this , the 2nd to last entry in the Godzilla series . The movie itself is a direct link to two of Toho's previous creations ( Godzilla x Mechagodzilla , and Mothra ) . So there's quite a bit of story interwined from all three of these movies . . . The best part of the film would have to be the monster battles , Mothra never looked better , and Kiryu ( Mechagodzilla ) is also a nice addition to the mix . Although , I for one , am getting tired of the Kiryu's appearances , and I'm glad that the robot doesn't appear in Godzilla : Final Wars ( the big guys final film ) . The down side would have to be , well , a few things in all honesty . One , Kiryu is never called by it's true name once through out the film . . . When it is repeated over and over again . Instead , the subtitles read either Mecha G or Mechagodzilla . I'd also have to say that I like the original title of Godzilla x Mothra x Mechagodzilla : Tokyo SOS 100% better then the title that the DVD is going by . But all in all Godzilla : Tokyo SOS is a great entry , and shouldn't be missed by anyone . BTW - Godzilla : Final Wars is already out in the Monster King's homeland and all in all it's doing okay . . . Though , there are many mixed reactions to Goji's final film here in the States . Only time will tell .
    • 027 4  This review is from : Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . ( DVD ) I'll be honest , the only reason why I watched this movie was because my favorite monster Mothra makes an appearance . Without her or some other plot device I don't think this movie would have been nearly as good as it was ( which as it is is only so-so ) . The movie for the most part was good . You don't have to watch the first movie Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla to understand the plot of Tokyo SOS ( though I'm sure it does help . . . ) . The beginning was great because they portrayed Mothra in a very sophisticated manner compared to her previous appearances as a model on a string , now she's mostly left that boat and gone almost completly computer-generated ; she is dazzling on screen . Usually Mechagodzilla is just a robot with a lot of weapons , but in this movie ( and it's prequel ) he is most interesting because he is built from the skeleton of the original Godzilla . I believe that there could have been more creativity to the monster fight scenes as I hope to make clear . First Godzilla breaks past the Tokyo defences . Then Mothra attacks and the two go at it for a while with neither gaining any ground . Then Mothra uses her last move of resort because apparently she feels that she is going to die soon , which has little effect on the Big G . Finally Mothra goes down and Mechagodzilla is deployed to fight Godzilla . The two go at it . Mechagodzilla nearly kills Godzilla before he takes a bad hit and has to be repaired . Mothra's twin babies come to assist their mother , and get mad when Mothra is finally obliterated by Godzilla . The two larva harass Godzilla and finally web him into a cocoon . Mechagodzilla is fixed , but the soul of the original Godzilla awakens and is heartbroken . He grabs Godzilla and rockets him to the ocean , where they both sink . The ending is quite dramatic , the plot starts out slow and then is rushed and could have been more creative , though it is cool that it ties into the original plot of Mothra from 1961 . Mothra herself could have put up more of a fight ( she is much , much more powerful in the other movies she appears in ) and Mechagodzilla sits around too much and then goes down too easy after all the talk of it being the last line of Japan's defense . Was it entertaining ? Absolutley . Was it worth watching ? Sure . Could I see it again ? Maybe one day . Was it the best Godzilla movie ? Heck no ! But that's just me . I suggest you rent it or buy it and decide for yourself .

    • 029 4  I am a big fan of Godzilla , I have all of his movies , and I , like many other fans , will write a review about this movie . Godzilla x Mothra x MechaGodzilla : Tokyo S.O.S . is a good movie , but it seems to be lacking in any new material . Personally , I did not care for any of the Millenium designs of Godzilla . To me the best Godzilla was that of the Heisei series . That Godzilla had a look of a real creature and he has impressive facial movements like a real animal . But all of these Millenium Godzilla's seem too fake and unrealistic . Mothra as ususal is better than ever in both its imago and larvae forms ( the mother & offspring ) . Her movements are impressive and realistic . Her golden scale attack is also impressive . The larva are also impressive in their fight against Godzilla . Their webbing reminds me of the Showa series . Its good to see the larvae again in a film . MechaGodzilla , more or less , is impressive , but I still like the Showa MechaGodzilla the best out of the MechaGodzillas ' . There is one monster that deserved to be in the film a lot more than it did . That kaiju is none other than Kameba . We don't get to see its fight against Godzilla or anything ! It's just a carcass ! The poor monster dragged itself on the beach and died . Why didn't the director use Kameba in the final fight against Godzilla ? ! Hell , it would of made it very interesting indeed ! Mothra , MechaGodzilla , and Kameba face off against the brutal kaiju Godzilla . The movie is good , but it doesn't break no new ground when regarding the storyline or plot . The special effects are great though and deserve the best reccomedation possible . Buy this film and enjoy ! : )
    • 030 4  I've been a Godzilla fan almost since birth , thanks to Creature Feature on TV . As a kid , I loved seeing the rubber monsters stampeding through a miniature city , even though I didn't really understand what was going on . As an adult , I appreciate the old films ' camp and kitsch value , and honestly wasn't expecting ( or hoping for ) much more . Which is why ' Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ' , and this film , caught me completely off guard . To fully understand ' Tokyo S.O.S . ' , you pretty much have to watch ' Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ' , as it is one of the few times a continuity exists between two movies . In ' Tokyo S.O.S . ' , Japan is still reeling from Godzilla's last attack ( no miraculous instant rebuilding here ) , and their mechanized superweapon constructed from the bones of the original Godzilla is out of commission . Fearing another attack , the Japanese government rush Mechagodzilla's repairs . Meanwhile , in a far off cottage , an old man is visited by a pair of acquaintances he hadn't seen in forty years , namely Mothra's pixie priestesses . Apparently , Mothra learned that humans have desecrated the old Godzilla's body and spirit in creating a terrible weapon and sent her diminutive clerics to spread the message that she is not cool with that at all . The priestesses assure the old man and his family , which includes one of MechaG's mechanics , that Mothra will defend them should Godzilla attack again , but warn of dire consequences should their warning not be heeded . Naturally , the government doesn't listen ; in fact , the prime minister mentions that MechaG was built , not just to repel Godzilla , but also Mothra and other monsters . This sets the stage for one of the most spectacular kaiju battles ever to grace the screen . The models have come a long way since Toho's heyday , and are amazingly realistic . MechaG looks fantastic , and of course , the battle-scarred Godzilla has never looked better . What stole the show for me was Mothra . Her grand entrance in the beginning of the film was simply awesome , her wing flaps and twitching legs are far more fluid than they were in years past , and out of all the characters ( human and kaiju alike ) , she was the most sympathetic . I flinched when she was tossed like a rag doll against a skyscraper , and felt myself getting choked up when she heroically took the full blast of Godzilla's atomic breath to save her young and exploded in a fiery nimbus that has to be seen to be appreciated . Not all the special effects are as excellent , with the silly string-webbing by Mothra's larvae being the biggest culprit . However , it's easily forgiven when taken along with the rest . Worth noting is the ending with MechaG , which will also tug at the heartstrings when it's discovered that it is sentient . The acting and character development were pretty decent , and the pace is brisk . Some plot holes are present , so suspension of disbelief is a must ( besides , it's about giant monsters rampaging a world metropolis ) . Overall , this is a fine addition to a lengthy series , and fans of Big G will not be disappointed . In addition , Mothra fans will also find much to love , as she is portrayed lovingly with grace , might , and ultimately heroism .
    • 031 4  The central absurdity of Mechagodzilla is that it carries all the man-made weapons that would be infinitely better deployed in more mobile forms . It is metaphorically a case of why put all your eggs in one very vulnerable basket ? Its such an inefficient way to deploy them . Why not make a mechaKingChicken ? Or a mechaKingRonaldMcDonald ? The weapons don't work against Godzilla when they are deployed by tanks or aircraft but somehow they do when fired by Mechadogzilla . . . and this has always invalidated the idea of Mechagodzilla for me ! This movie , incidentally , is a sequel to Godzilla against Mechagodzilla ( 2002 ) . There is a slightly ropey sub-plot as usual but the continuity from Godzilla against Mechagodzilla definitely helps . As does this series ' sense of greater realism and taking its point from the origin in 1954 . I am all for revisionist adaptations of the original 1954 film because the Godzilla idea , while it endures amazingly well , it essentially limited . Revisiting it adds something to the mind's eye . Mothra is also an enduring Godzilla character and the Mothra ' symbol ' here is sweet and touching . The use of its scales as a weapon of last resort has not been seen for many movies and is a little sad , it can't fly after losing its wings . The fairies are ludicrous as always but add a sense of poetry . It's always puzzled me how Godzilla stands up in the middle of the sea - the actor in the suit might appreciate that of course ! In this movie we get the first shots ( by Toho ) of missiles striking Godzilla under the water , courtesy one assumes of the 1998 US version . The Godzilla bones ( dem bones . . . ) are a neat twist but equally incomprehensible . If the bones possessed a memory they'd not let Mechagodzilla fight Godzilla , would they ? Godzilla is drawn to them when they are in Mechadodzilla so why not before ? I wish I were drawn to my house keys like that . There is an amusing scene where the Mothra larvae and Mothra ' converse ' and then Godzilla destroys Mothra brutally . I am not sure what the chat was about . . . . . While Mechagodzilla is repaired , helpless , Godzilla hangs around growling at the larvae when he could have trounced it completely . He was drawn to the bones , so what's he doing ? ? The movie is a tiny bit of a dud despite some sweet touches and continuing improvements to the look and feel of the monsters and firepower . It reminds us we still need cogent plotting and good direction to make the whole thing hang together and add some coherence and suspense . If its serious , do it properly ! It's an ending we have seen before , but I'll not spoil that , and it works well enough . Incidentally , if you want definitive info about the franchise , the best source is Wikipedia . Here :
    • 032 4  This Movie is just awesome . Godzilla , Mothra , Kyru Look great . The end of this movie is really a big battle seen with every man for himself . it was just great . It had flash backs on Mothra and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla . If You want to see one of the best Godzilla movies don't rent this one , BUY IT !
    • 033 4  My son is a huge Godzilla fan - and I used to watch the old Godzilla movies on ' Creature Double Feature ' when I was a kid . He loves it .
    • 034 4  This film continues the story of Godzilla X Mechagodzilla , and as a sequel , well , it is a swquel . Though the action is good , this film suffers from a little too much repetion of standard old plot devices . Mothra's first appearance is very cool , and the return of Kiryu , a.k.a . MechaGodzilla is exciting . The use of stock footage from previous films links it strongly to the long series , but the ending is a bit unsatisfying , though the larvae wrap up the story effectively .
    • 035 4  Being a long time Godzilla fan , I am still pleased to know that Toho still knows that the Big Guy can draw a crowd ! Masaki Tezuka comes back again for a second consecutive ( and his third shot ) at directing a Godzilla film . Tezuka seems to be getting better with each entry he directs ; fixing problems that plagued the previous Godzilla films . The problem is , in the areas he succeeded in previous films , he seems to skip out on some of them in his newer entries . The story takes place practically a few days or so after the previous film ( Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ) . Kiryu ( Mechagodzilla ) is being repaired after taking heavy damage from Godzilla in their previous battle . Mr . Chujo , who was the character in the original 1961 Mothra film , is contacted by the Twin Fairies from Infant Island , Mothra's home island . The fairies warn him that if Godzilla's bones aren't returned to the sea ( the bones are the structure supporting Mechagodzilla ) , Mothra will declare war on mankind . Mr . Chujo desperately tries to convince the Japanese government to trash the Mechagodzilla project , but it fails . Not too long after , Godzilla , Mothra , the twin Mothra larvae , and Mechagodzilla are involved in a giant battle royal ! The movie is very entertaining especially if you like long monster action . In fact , the monster action takes up half of the film ! The only problem I have with this film is that the story is thin here and there is hardly any characterization at all ; making you feel nothing for the human characters . Another problem is that the ending and certain portions of the story seem identical to the previous film . To be quite honest , the idea of the film is new , but the majority of the film is not . Many of you who are Godzilla fans will not see much in the way of new material here considerng you've seen much of it in previous Godzilla films . The acting is decent and the special effects are phenomenal ! All in all , it is nothing more than a fun Godzilla film . It is not the best of the series because the story is very thin and the characterization is pretty much non-existent . But it's jsut fun because of the long monster battles that are well choreographed . It's a film , I believe , most Godzilla fans will find refreshing and enjoyable . I find it to be one of the better films of the Millennium series ( 1999 - 2005 ) . So anyone interested in giant monsters or Godzilla films will certainly enjoy this one !
    • 036 4  I can't wait for the DVD , but this movie is great ! Sure the human interaction wasn't great , but still , the fights , the music , and even the SFX worked ! That's enough to make it a five star rating ! The fights were pretty amazing ! Even the final battle The SFX were WAY better than GMK . Mothra never looked realistic ! The musice was awesome . Kudos to Oshima for the wonderful score ! Even the ending , while sad , was beautiful . So I DEFINATELY recommend this to any Godzilla fans . Most will find it wonderful , while some will find it pointless . Me ? Well , this is definately five stars ! If your looking for a Godzilla movie that has great SFX , this is the one ! Congrats to Tezuka for directing this wonderful film . And again , I can't wait to pick this up , as it will feature a REAL bonus feature !
    • 037 4  Huuuuuh when i saw the first movie with my dad when i was a little child godzilla amaze me for the rest of my life , the myth of the giant monsters and all the things that change the fiction movies or horror movies , i love the monster and all the history behind him , mechagodzilla ( aka kyryu ) is great ! also mothra the giant bee appears too in this film , the new image of godzilla was taken from godzilla 2000 , is sooo cool ! the movie in general have lots of action since the last encounter with godzilla and kyryu both almost destroyed a great part of tokyo in the last fight and now is payback time ! Godzilla is wounded of the last encounter and mechagodzilla is very damaged of one arm and the lost of the main weapon the absolut zero ! then mothra appears to save the people of tokyo but which kind of price the villagers of tokyo need to pay to survive another encounter ? we don't now ! ! ! until you watch this great movie !
    • 038 4  It's been two years since Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla arrived in Japanese theaters . While its visuals far surpassed anything previously seen in a Godzilla movie , save perhaps America's monstrosity known to hardcore kaiju eiga fans only as G.I.N.O . ( Godzilla in name only ) , it's story was a tad on the shallow side . The best Godzilla movies are those that provide an entertaining experience with a side of deeper meaning conveyed through strong symbolism , such as the original Godzilla versus Mothra . Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla left off on a semi-cliffhanger : While Kiryu ( aka Mechagodzilla ) was able to repel Godzilla , it had not won the battle , and Godzilla retreated back into the ocean to recuperate . Tokyo S.O.S . picks up soon after the first film's conclusion , leaving enough time for Kiryu to be mostly repaired . We learn in the first film that Kiryu was constructed through the bones of the original Godzilla , defeated in the mid - 1950s by Dr . Serizawa's oxygen destroyer . At Tokyo S.O.S . ' s beginning , we learn that Mothra has decided to involve herself once again in Tokyo's kaiju affairs , and its twins , now known as fairies despite an utter lack of fairy-like characteristics , contact Dr . Shujo . They bestow upon him a warning that Mothra will not stand for the bones of the deceased being used , citing that nature's laws are to be obeyed . Mothra promises to do battle with Godzilla , but only under the condition that Kiryu is dismantled and returned to the ocean . Naturally , the Japanese Defense Force will not sacrifice its prime kaiju-battling monster , and the warnings go unheeded . Despite this , Mothra does battle with Godzilla , even along side Kiryu at one point . Talk about empty promises . This is only one dissatisfying gliche out of several in this movie , however . Perhaps the worst of which is the film's characterization : It insists on introducing several characters that have relationships with each other , but all of them are about as deep as a puddle . This is even more frustrating as most of the cast of Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla is completely discarded without any reason whatsoever . That's not to say that those characters were particularly interesting either , but they were quite a bit more developed by the film's conclusion , unlike the stale cardboard cutouts we get in Tokyo S.O.S . In fact , Tokyo S.O.S . takes a little piss in our eyes when it dangles the previous movie's Kiryu pilot - a much better character than any of the new ones - in front of us , only to pull her away to go for special training in the U.S . Compounding this problem , they ruin the character by giving her a single incredibly awkward scene that exemplifies a not-so-subtle attraction to Mechagodzilla . The new characters in Tokyo S.O.S . are utter garbage that dance relationship waltzes that have absolutely no impact on the audience . Why oh why didn't they bring back the cast from the previous movie ( Save for the Kiryu-fetish pilot ) ? It should also be mentioned that for unfathomable reasons , there are a couple of Japanese-produced sequences involving English actors . These scenes go far beyond abysmal , with each of these actors falling well under the Keanu Reeves line , and the consistancy is appalling . For instance , various sailors on a battleship all have different accents , setting off a wild question mark in audience's minds . As previously mentioned , the high-powered special effects are the movie's crowning achievements . In the first 10 minutes of the film , we're treated to a very well-done minature chase sequence in the clouds between two fighter jets and Mothra , a mere foreshadowing of things to come . Every action sequence is charged with dazzling effects , especially for a kaiju movie . But for once , save for the man in the rubber suit , these effects actually equal some finer CG-effects in other movies . One standout scene occurs when Godzilla lays absolute waste to a certain monster with his trademark breath attack , causing it to burst into brilliant flames . Delightful , to say the least . Yet even with strong effects supporting them , the action scenes are not without flaw . Apparently , the rubber suits are none too acrobatic , and it shows . There are several points in the movie where Godzilla or Kiryu are knocked down , yet the movie cuts awkwardly from a standing-up shot to being straight on the ground , a flaw that is both jarring and unprofessional . While Tokyo S.O.S . does an immense job of cleaning up the action sequences - a flaw that often plagues kaiju cinema - , it loses sight of perhaps the most important aspect : symbolism . Godzilla was originally created as a big ol ' symbol for atomic weaponry , though such an idea has fallen to the wayside in this movie . Instead , Tokyo S.O.S . rehashes Mothra's trademark Don't mess with nature , message to an incredibly shallow degree . Instead of letting audiences discover such ideas for themselves , Tokyo S.O.S . hits you over the head with obvious dialogue that gives you a hurl in the right direction rather than just a slight nudge . The movie dabbles in a slight cautionary message in regards to technology as Kiryu once again flies off the handle , though in the end it amounts to very little . Still , Godzilla : Tokyo S.O.S . is by no stretch of the imagination a bad movie . Rather , its just a bit typical of kaiju cinema . It harkens back to the late Showa series of Godzilla films with its blatant disregard for decent characterization and shallow plot , focusing instead on cash-in action sequences . Yet in this regard , Tokyo S.O.S . succeeds : its action sequences are very well-done for the most part . It proves to be an entertaining though empty experience ; a Rush Hour compared to a Hero .
    • 039 4  Well , well , just watched the move today again and I was bored . The predecessor is much better . They copied nearly everything from the movie before and added Mothra and a ' hero mechanic ' - no not a mechanical hero : - ) . Also this movie features some very typical Japanese issues like dead man can't walk on the ground - Mecha Godzilla has to return to the sea , where it came from to find peace . Mothra is killed in this movie - but don't be disappointed - two larvaes take over and finally kill / hibernate Godzilla . The story also contains two uncles , one of them the original one who went to Bonfide island to discover Mothra more than 40 years ago and a nephew , who is the typical child identification . So far a good Godzilla movie , turning back the battle style to the 80ies . Well I found this movie watchable but the predecessor was much better . I give it three stars but please make your own picture .
    • 040 4  This review is from : Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . ( DVD ) This movie wasn't bad , I didn't mind Godzilla against Mechagodzilla but it was boring mostly except for the last battle and when Godzilla shows up . This one improves with much more action and adds Mothra . This movie seems like many movies we have seen before especially when Godzilla is wrapped around with two baby Mothra's web . We have seen it all before . Anyway a not bad point in the series but far from the best .

    • 042 4  Godzilla meets Kiru . This is a good movie . One thing I especially liked about this movie was the music in the Credits , and Godzilla in here looks much more impressive than in the other one titled : Godzilla vs Space Godzilla . Kiru Looks like a fine and big robot .
    • 043 4  This review is from : Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . ( DVD ) Godzilla : Tokyo SOS is a direct sequel to Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla ( 2002 ) , as well as the original Mothra ( 1963 ) , and features the return of Kiryu - - the fourth incarnation of Godzilla's mechanical counterpart . After a virtual stalemate between Godzilla and Kiryu in the previous film , Mothra appears to join in an epic battle between the monsters , and Tokyo is once again in a big heap of trouble . Following on the heels of 2002 ' s Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla , Godzilla : Tokyo SOS might easily be considered the second half of its predecessor ; both films feel incomplete in the absence of their companion pieces . Like the rest of the Millennium Godzilla series , these two entries disregard the existing Godzilla mythos ( except for the original 1954 Godzilla ) , though the ties to the original Mothra ( 1963 ) are clear and very refreshing - - especially return of the likeable Professor Chujo , played by Hiroshi Koizumi , who originally starred in the role . Sadly , Koizumi gets entirely too little screen time here , but his scenes do add a certain poignancy for those familiar with his work in the classic Showa-era Toho films . Kumi Mizuno , one of Toho's exceptional female stars of the 60s , also reprises her role from Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla as Japan's prime minister . Godzilla exudes that certain charming menace that has characterized him throughout the Millennium series , and Mothra has never looked better . Exciting monster battles and high-quality special effects largely make up for substantial shortcomings in the story and characterization departments .

    • 045 4  If you enjoyed Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla but felt that the film was incomplete . . . well good news . . . here is the sequel . . kind of . If you wanted to find out what happened to the heroine of Mechagodzilla you are out of luck as she isn't even mentioned in S.O.S . . . . on the otherhand , if you simply want to see Godzilla tangle with Mechagodzilla . . . you are in luck . S.O.S . is a direct sequel to Against Mechagodzilla taking up almost right where the previous film left off . Mechagodzilla is being repaired after his epic fight at the end of the first film which drove Godzilla from Japan . Godzilla seems to be hibernating deep beneath the Pacific Ocean , and all seems well , except when Mothra's two tiny fairies show up and warn one of Mechagodzilla's crewmen that unless the original Godzilla bones which were used as a frame for Mechagodzilla are returned to the bottom of the ocean , Mothra will declare war on humanity . If Mechagodzilla is sent to the bottom of the ocean that will leave Japan vulnerable to another attach by Godzilla , and if they keep the mighty cyborg above ground , Mothra will begin her reign of destruction . S.O.S . is a fun movie , with some fantastic special effects , and great monster fight sequences . Adding Mothra to the mix is always a good choice , and teaming her up with Mechagodzilla is a unique and inventive pairing of the two fan favorites . I highly recommend you watch Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla prior to watching this entry as there are some things you will pick up in the first film which are addressed in S.O.S . .
    • 046 4  In what is a direct sequel to both the forgettable 2001 filler movie Godzilla X Mechagodzilla and the excellent 1961 classic Mothra , Godzilla once again battles Mechagodzilla / Kiryu , only to also end up battling Mothra , who shows up to restore the natural balance of life to the Earth ( or something like that ) . Tokyo SOS is slightly better than its predecessor due to more action sequences and a relatively fun final battle , but , as with all of Masaaki Tezuka's Godzilla films , the direction is amateurish and bland . None of the characters have any development whatsoever , and the suits - as per usual for the Millennium Series - look stiff and rubbery . For die hard fans only .
    • 047 4  This film , part of the 50th Anniversary series , has the same specifications as Godzilla : Final Wars . This time around a Japanese teaser is included , although it's from when the movie was still in production , so it's mostly made of Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla , Godzilla vs . Mothra , and some GMK and Rebirth of Mothra stock footage . But from Japan none the less . Although the Japanese audio track and behind the scenes are included , I still didn't find this DVD worth five stars .
    • 048 4  The problem with Mechagodzilla ? Part of his fram is made up of bones from the origianl Godzilla . Is he able to be trusted in his battle with the current incarnation of the legendary beast ? Will anyone understand the key to defeating Godzilla without having MechaG go on another rampage ? Not the best of the last batch of Godzilla films , but perfectly passable .
    • 049 4  This review is from : Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . ( DVD ) This is a direct sequel to Godzilla against mecha godzilla . It has good graphics and marks the return of the classic mothra . This also marks the end of the millineum series .

    • 052 4  Seen this movie on the bigscreen g-fest 04 . I have to say great story , and plot . This one also got great effects . Tokyo gets in trouble again , so they rebuilt kiryra ( Mechagodzilla ) . But then mothra joins the fight . Got the same actor from Mothra 61 . Also you get to see the turtle from Space Ameoba ( dead ) .
    • 053 4  My almost 7 year old son LOVES Godzilla movies . He has watched this one at least a dozen times already . It is better than some of the other Godzilla movies out there . If you are even considering buying this then you must be a fan . Go for it , you won't be disappointed .
    • 054 4  In a rare turn of godzilla movies , they don't only bring back the same monsters / robots they actually have some of the same people so it doesn't feel like an episode of outer limits . This is even better then Final Wars .
    • 055 4  This was a good Godzilla film in that it used more realistic sets and showed a believable Godzilla . The film stars Mothra , MechaGodzilla , Godzilla , Deadcamoebas , and some Mothra Larvae . This particular flick exhibits some good morals as MechaGodzilla cannot bring himself to destroy his brother monster , Godzilla . MechaGodzilla became self-aware even though he was constructed as a robotic weapon . If you are a Godzillaphile , you will enjoy this film . It was the 5th in the Millenium series .
    • 057 4  I got this for my son as a Christmas present . He collects Godzilla videos and I must say that it is a decent story line . Kids will like this modern day version of Gozilla .
    • 058 4  That is the full title of the latest ( almost ) installment in the Big G's Millenium Series . If you have seen the prior film , Godzilla X MechaGodzilla , then you have basically seen this film , except for one small detail . . . Mothra . That's right , the magic and mysticism of the Mothra legacy is brought back into the Godzilla series . Infant Island , the Cosmos , and the Mothra Larvae are all here . This is a fun , loud , and well done addition to the Godzilla film legacy . The story and direction is great , the editing and pacing is very tight , the music is great , and the actors are great , including Hiroshi Koizumi , a veteran of many early Godzilla films . Godzilla fans will have a great time .
    • 059 4  My grandson is a huge Godzilla fan and wanted this movie to add to his collection . I'm so glad that Amazon had it because I couldn't find it anywhere else .
    • 061 4  Mechagodzilla is still under repairs from the previous movie and Japan has no defense against Godzilla or any other monster until the repairs are finished . But the giant battle machine was built using the bones of Godzilla and disturbing the dead in that fashion is a big no no . The fairies of Infant Island return to an old acquaintance to warn of the consequences of using Mechagodzilla . If the bones are not returned to the bottom of the sea , Mothra will bring destruction . If the bones are returned , Mothra will be a protector . Of course on can say that if Mothra had been a protector to begin with , maybe Mecha-G would not have been needed . A massive battle takes up much of the film and we get to see Godzilla , Mechagodzilla , Mothra and two Mothra larvae duke it out with each other and the Japanese military thrown in for good measure . Because so much of the movie is one long battle scene , I felt that this Godzilla movie was too slow and a bit bogged down . The underlying story was rather good but the action just didn't feel right . The great battle rages for a long time as seen from the rising and setting of the sun but not enough happens to account for the time period . While this is a must see for Godzilla fans everywhere I am sure it will never rank high on a list of favorites .
    • 062 4  I almost gave this 4 stars , but I just couldn't do it . There's nothing really wrong with it , but there's a few small personal reasons that kept it down to 3 for me . Let me just say though that you don't really need to know much about Godzilla to enjoy the film . Knowing some trivia might add enjoyment , but it isn't essential . The story is fine . And I actually liked Mothra in this one . She puts up a good fight at first , but then Godzilla just takes her down . I know she's the underdog in this matchup , and I don't expect her to win , but I'd love it if they finally gave the poor girl some real power for once . The showdown between the Big Guy and Mechagodzilla has excellent choreography . More than once I was taken by surprise . And MG , while big and clunky , is armed to the teeth and a worthy challenger to the King . But any film where Godzilla is the bad guy always seems weaker . It's not that I mind Godzilla being beaten , but Toho's writers sure seem to . It's always kind of vague in the end , and somewhat unsatisfying . Despite its faults , it's a solid , if not great , candidate for any G-fan's film library .
    • 063 4  This review is from : Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . ( DVD ) Let me start by saying i own all the Godzilla movies in one form or another and am not very impressed with this one . High in spirituality and while the action was good it wasnt anything not seen before . Mechagodzilla and Mothra are wearing pretty thin after all these years and its just more of the same . While i know the alien plots have been used and reused in the Godzilla saga , at least a different type of alien is the norm and would have been a help in this outing . Whether true or not ive read where this will be the last Godzilla movie for sometime so while its not the best by far it is one the collector would want . But if you just want some good Godzilla i would recomend any of the four before this one . I really looked forward to this one and am dissapointed .

    • 065 4  I kinda think this film deserves 4 1 / 2 stars . in the beginning two faries come to warn the japenese that the bones of godzilla must be returned to the sea - but their warning is ignored . soon after , a giant sea turtle washes up on shore . . . i won't tell you anymore about the plot . you'll have to see the movie to find out what happens .
    • 066 4  This review is from : Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . ( DVD ) This movie would have warrented 5 stars if it had not been for the poor characterizations and re-hashed script . The recent Godzilla movies are guilty of not thinking out of the box and seem to re-introduce the same themes film after film . Yet , in spite of these drawbacks Tokyo SOS is a good film with the best SFX to date . Godzilla fans will be satisfied , and new Godzilla viewers should watch Godzilla against MechaGodzilla before watching this one . I am eagerly awaiting Godzilla Final Wars the latest and last installment in the 50 year Godzilla saga .

    • 068 4  Kinda lame . First off , I'm a major fan of the big G . I own every Godzilla movie from the original Gojira subtitled without Raymond Burr , right through to GMK . 90% of this clinker looks like they simply re-filmed scenes from previous Godzilla movies . Mothra fighting Godzilla . Godzilla frying Mothra . The baby Mothra's shooting webbing all over Godzilla . Etc , etc . Come on ! We've seen it already ! Can't really see how other G fans gave this thing 4 or 5 stars , unless they like watching updated versions of stuff they've already seen before .
    • 069 4  Tokyo SOS is a very good godzilla movie , much better than the newest godzilla movie , Godzilla Final Wars . I mean , come on ! It's supposed to be a good movie for the big guy's 50th anniversary ! Tokyo SOS will always be the one and only godzilla movie that stands out in the way it does - - i prefer not to go into detail , I feel lazy - - and so will the first godzilla movie that started it all . - - This is all for my dad . . . : /
    • 070 4  There is one thing that I have discovered watching the Godzilla Millennium series . They make me long for the old school Godzilla films , directed by Inishiro Honda , who placed action above character development . However , despite having to watch 30 to 40 minutes of having to deal with whether or not Godzilla will attack , or whether or not either Mothra or MechnaGodzilla will save Japan , the movie accelerates into high gear . I only wish that you didn't have to wait for the action to begin . It's a fairly good movie , obviously whetting your appitite for Godzilla : Final Wars .
    • 071 4  I was suckered into purchasing this flic by the reviews here on Amazon . This is the second film of the latest series of G flics I ` ve seen . The other was G 2000 which I enjoyed very much . But not this film . Total letdown . It is boring . It commits the biggest of sins of a monster flic . It cuts away from the monsters to show what the humans are doing . It does it over and over . I want to see monsters fighting . I don ` t want to see a bunch of humans talking . I don ` t want to see jets flying thru the air . Monsters , show the monsters !
    • 072 4  A helpful hint to all whose brothers force them to watch this movie : WATCH ALL OF THE OTHER GODZILLA MOVIES FIRST . Between mini singing Mothra girls and Mechagodzilla and the inept Tokyo army dudes , jumping into the Godzilla canon at this point is too confusing . I enjoy the dubbing on this movie , as there is absolutely no attempt to synch the English with the Japanese , it once again provides the highlight of every Godzilla movie I've ever seen .
    • 073 4  Godzilla SOS is a dissapointment in my view . Yes the special affects were great compared to the other Godzilla movies but a lot did lack here . The number one thing that made me give this feeling was the lack of a good story . Im sick of TOHO retooling there KAIJU to take on different roles . Im sorry but growing up MECHAGODZILLA was a bad guy and thats that . If they had done a better job introducing mechagodzilla maybe I wouldnt feel as bad for it . Or why not just make another robot totally new .
    • 074 4  I wanted to like this movie and I approached it with an open mind . I realize you have to just suspend reality sometimes and go for the visuals . Unfortunately the first 45 minutes of this movie is tedious as it focuses on two 4 tall girls that appear and warn that Godzilla is coming . The 4 tall girls sing songs and are about as cheesy as you can get . More mind numbing events occur as the story shows more of Mothra and it's larva then Godzilla . I could not even recommend this movie for children to watch , as the will certainly be board to tears and also * SPOILER * there is a graphic scene where the moth gets roasted alive . So no exactly wholesome fun for the kids to watch . Instead of this movie , I would recommend Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla or Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla both of which have not stop action , incredible special effects and more interesting stories .
    • 075 4  This review is from : Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S . ( DVD ) I just watched this movie and was looking forward to it . Why , because I'm a fan of the classic Japanese movies . I would not tell anyone not to buy this movie , but be aware there isn't any real reason to do so . It starts off with a interesting link to the first Mothra movie , which would be great if this were a Mothra movie . There is a touching part with Mothra and the new births , which would be fine if this were again a Mothra movie . Sadly it's a Godzilla movie , and again there isn't much of a story here . Aside from the two points mentioned , you have seen everything in this movie before , many times . It doesn't make any more sense then it ever did . Big fight , ruin a city , weak story tailored it seems to kids rather then a serious attempt to be noticed . Someday these directors will get it . Maybe someday Godzilla fans will demand a movie that remembers were it all started . If this is all they can come up with , why not have Ultraman vs Godzilla . They have something in common , the same old story everytime .
    • 076 4  I just watched this movie and was looking forward to it . Why , because I'm a fan of the classic Japanese movies . I would not tell anyone not to buy this movie , but be aware there isn't any real reason to do so . It starts off with a interesting link to the first Mothra movie , which would be great if this were a Mothra movie . • 077 4  I liked Godzilla X Mecha Godzilla . This was a horrible sequel to it . It's real title is G X Mothra X MG : Tokyo S.O.S , they should have called it Godzilla X Mothra AND Mecha Godzilla because in the movie , MG and Mothra didn't fight once in the film . Mothra looks better than ever in this movie . Still , I didn't like this film . Hopfully you won't either .
