Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla

  • 45 years after the original Godzilla was destroyed , a new one appears and begins to blow stuff up . In order to fight this new Godzilla , an anti-Godzilla weapon named Kiryu is built around the bones of the original Godzilla that died way back when . Three years are spent putting togeather this weapon . ( Where Godzilla went during all this time ? Who knows . ) . . . Oh , yeah . And there's also some boring subplot revolving around some Mary Sue who accidentally caused somebody to be killed by Godzilla and becoming Kiryu's pilot and blah blah blah . Right . So , right on the day Kiryu is finished , Godzilla just happens to show up . After probably the most boring fight in any Godzilla movie EVER , Godzilla runs away , and Kiryu goes on a rampage . A big chunk of the movie is spent trying to fix Kiryu and stuff . A really BIG , looooooong boring chunk . I kinda tuned out around here , so I'll just skip ahead to the next fight . Godzilla shows up again , and there's another battle , which ends with Godzilla being dumped into the ocean and running away . Righty now , onto my excessively bitey Review : Grah . I didn't think it was possible , but there IS another Godzilla movie more mind numbingly boring then Godzilla : Tokyo SOS . Coincidentally , the movie that exceeds it in boringness is also its direct predecessor . The characters were annoying . Akane , the main character , is such a blatent Mary Sue that it made my blood boil . The other characters weren't as annoying as Akane , they were just . . . how shall we say . . . bland . They wasted too much time trying to develop them as well . They're already irritating and cliched , and the movie worsened this by trying to force these characters down my throat . Kiryu ( I won't call him Mechagodzilla , because he ain't the Mechagodzilla I grew up with and have grown to love ) is annoying too . . . he looks cool , but really . The Kiryu wankage in this movie is excessive . The movie isn't even really about Godzilla , it's more about Mary Sue and Kiryu . The fighting was okay . . . but compared to Tokyo SOS , GMK and Godzilla 2000 , it pales in comparison . The first battle between Kiryu and Godzilla is more of a plot device then a real battle - Godzilla stands there , lets himself get shot at , and runs away . The fight was little more then to give Kiryu an excuse to go crazy . The second battle was fun to watch , but the Kiryu wankage ruined it for me . Godzilla doesn't live up to the standards set in the other movies - far from being an unstoppable force of nature , he just lets Kiryu beat the crap out of him , and only manages to hold his own by squeezing in the occasional dirty trick . Godzilla deserves better then to be treated as a mere plot device who can't hold his own in a fight without resorting to cheap , underhanded shots . Overall , Godzilla against Mechagodzilla isn't very good . There's even MORE blah and even LESS boom in this movie then Tokyo SOS . I realize Toho is attempting to make Godzilla serious , but it left me feeling cold and unfulfilled . You want a serious Godzilla movie ? Watch GMK : Giant monsters all out attack and avoid this garbage . Overall , Godzilla against Mechagodzilla gets a measly two out of five . This movie reeks like a big , stinky pile of Godzilla doo-doo .
    • 007 4  This small review is for other reviewers . Hey people WAKE UP ! I can't believe how many reviewers are giving a bad rating to this movie without even seeing one frame of it . Let's review other so-called complaints by so-called die-hard G-fans . First of all the story : regardless of what others might say this is a really cool story . A great story worthy of an Oscar ? maybe not , but a cool story anyway . Hey this is a sci-fi action movie after all and if you're looking for a deep story go rent a drama instead . Of course G movie have always had the same set-up but the real joy is how will he get out of this situation this time ? Will he crunch civilians , destroy cities or completly annihilate his opponents ? that's the joy of a G movie ! Knowing why MechaGodzilla is deffective or why SpaceGodzilla has crystals on his shoulders or why this monster is that is secondary ! Most of us watch Godzilla for the destruction , not for an explanation on the meaning of life ! Second , people compaining about Godzilla ' motionless moments : Again i'm sure many of you wrote your reviews without actually watching the movie as it's clearly stated ( and also in the past 6 - 7 G movies ) that MASER and Missiles have NO EFFECT on Godzilla . How can you complain about G not rocking back and forth from a missile when they have no effects on him ! ? He's indestructible , that's why MechaGodzilla was created in the first place , because that's the only weapon effective against him ! Third , bad CG / special effects : Whoa ! hold on here a minute . This movie has great SFX , the quality of them in this movie has increased tremedously from previous G movies . The are many scenes using CG in such a cool way that you can't be anything else but impressed . Remember that most G movies have a budget at a fraction of many Hollywood-produced movies . We should applaud the creators for giving us great SFX that can rival anything that Hollywood can dish out . Fourth , MechGodzilla and his own movie series ? : ha i'm sure this one caught you off-guard . I wouldn't be surprised that MG finally gets his own movie series with monsters made specially for his firepower . Toho has been trying in the past 10 years to reinvent , or at least , update the Godzilla character without much success ( well depending on who you talk to ) and the upcoming Godzilla : Final Wars may be the last G movie , so why not go out with a bang and introduce new monsters / or updated monsters for a new line of kaiju movies ? MechaGodzilla would be the perfect character to have his own franchise . Fifth , BUY THIS MOVIE ! ! ! It's one of the BEST GODZILLA MOVIE EVER ! ! !
    • 010 4  I just got through watching this and I have nothing but good things to say . The dubbing was great , the acting was great ( suprisingly ) , the special effects were phenominal and the fight scenes were terrific . WARNING SPOILER AHEAD I really enjoyed the final battle , which can either be counted as a tie or , well I guess I'll just have to lay out the setting for you . I won't spoil the plot but at the conclusion of the final battle , Mechagodzilla and the BIG G collide into the ocean ( won't tell how ) , and Mechagodzilla , oops my mistake Kiryu , sets off his Absolute zero cannon ( a super freeze gun for a quick summary ) , and it freezes the surrounding water in the bay , Godzilla rises to reveal a huge scar on his chest , and with a growl proceeds into the ocean . Kiryu rises shortly after , but has used all of it's power in it's final attack against the king of the monsters . It is left powerless in the bay , while Godzilla proceeds back to the ocean to recover from his awesome battle . This is declared a draw in the movie , but I guess that comes down to opinion . I personally think Godzilla was the victor of this bout because he could have destroyed Kiryu , but at seeing the lifeless robot in the bay , and being exhausted , I suppose he figured he should heal his wounds . While Kiryu had no power to do anything Godzilla could have delivered the final blow to the terribly damaged Kiryu . This comes down to opinion like I said , but to me Godzilla won this fight . This is a must see for any Godzilla fan .
    • 035 4  The battle between the Big G and MechaG has been told twice before , but this one is the best one . I can only say to any kaiju fan , they come across MUCH BETTER in the original Japanese .
    • 037 4  VIDEO QUALITY : The disc presents the film in it's original 2.35 : 1 theatrical ratio , and is enhanced for widescreen televisions . Generally it was very good , loosing the oversaturated greens that plagued the DVD Toho and Universe Laser releases . The increased contrast and brightness in some scenes also helped to raise the level of detail . On the downside , there was a rather distracting amount of grain which covered the film from start to finish . Apart from this the film looked fabulous . AUDIO QUALITY : Two audio options to choose from here , the original Japanese language track and Toho's international English dub , both presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 . As you'd expect , they both sound brilliant . As for the voice acting in the English dub , it's pretty much typical of any other international track - over ( or perhaps under ) acted with the wrong age groups dubbing the wrong characters . EXTRA FEATURES : Not a lot here , as usual . There are five trailers to watch , which for some reason doesn't include any of Sony's other Godzilla DVD releases ( Godzilla vs . King Ghidorah / Mothra , Godzilla vs . Space Godzilla / Destroyah , Godzilla 2000 , Godzilla vs . Megaguirus or GMK ) , but instead trailers for Jackie Chan's lacklustre Hollywood picture The Medallion , Returner , Tokyo Godfathers , Tube and Vampire Effect . OVERALL : Despite a few nitpicks the video was near on perfect , and the choice of both original and dubbed audio is always a plus . It has been interesting to see the general opinion of Sony changing over time , although understandable considering how with every release they have improved on an area . Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla offers anamorphic video , dual language audio , and accurate subtitles - the only thing the disc is missing are some decent extra features , although overtime I'm sure Sony will improve yet again .
    • 054 4  This review is from : Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ( DVD ) . . . when you buy it used . I have a Panasonic 50 plasma / Played through a Panasonic DMP-BD80 BD player , the Millenium series Godzilla films are the BEST movies on DVD ( played through an upgrading BD player ) that I've viewed . That's out of a collection of over 100 DVDs - they are comparable to the Pixar cartoons in terms of PQ . This picks up directly after the b & w Godzilla , and makes for a lot of fun . I recommend the whole Millenium series of Godzilla movies .

    • 069 4  This one is serious ! It is not the old ' cheesy ' animation , it is state of the art . It is serious and the fights are serious and believable rather than the others . The music is FANTASTIC ! I bought the orignal Japanese version in Japan , but if the English version also contains the making of the music score and you are interested in music - watch it . It is really interesting how they produced the score in Moscow . Well , the movie itself , has IMO the best minatures ever and the most amazing CG animated fights I ever saw in a ' G ' movie up to now . This DVD is a real ' YES I want it ' from a 1963 ' G ' fan ever since . I can only recommend this movie to any serious ' G ' fan and also action movie fan . It can't be compared with the predecessor - Godzilla 2000 - and the successor - Tokyo SOS . Both are far behind in quality , story continguancy and story itself . Highly recommended !

    • 087 4  . . . . . Come ON , Toho , get it right ! ! ! ! ! I mean , only one of the four Millenium Series of Godzilla films has been good ( that one film being GODZILLA , MOTHRA , KING GHIDORAH : GIANT MONSTERS ALL-OUT ATTACK ) . Godzilla seems to have been caught in some sort of slump . It's getting reeeeeeaally annoying how Toho feels the need to keep reinventing the Godzilla history over and over and over again ! ( Can you spell Overkill ? ) The only reason I gave this particular entry two stars is because I didn't see all of it , so for all I know it could have a spectacular ending . But from what I saw of it , I couldn't finish it . This is probably due to the fact that it's done by the same nimrods who gave us the atrocious GODZILLA VS . MEGAGUIRUS . Thus , GXMG shares the exact same flaws that GXM did : it was boring , the action was poorly staged , the special effects shoddy , and the plot seriously lacking . Furthermore , I wish they would give us a truly good Godzilla suit and just STAY with it ! GMK had an excellent and scary G-suit ; all they had to do was get rid of the unfortunate pot belly and use it again for this film . But noooooooooooo , they had to go back and copy the suit from GODZILLA 2000 and GXM . That suit just plain sucked . But they made some changes to this newest suit , so luckily it's not quite as bad . Heck , it could've been great ! But it is kept from greatness for one main reason : it . . . . just . . . . stands there ! And does nothing ! It doesn't even flinch to anything . I miss the good ol ' days , before the Heisei series , when Godzilla had a little mobility ! Then comes another flaw : MechaGodzilla ( or Kiryu in this movie ) . The design is okay , I guess , though I prefer that of the Heisei MechaGodzilla . But both these robots share the same problem . You see , in the original two Godzilla flicks with MechaGodzilla , it was just a robot being controlled from outside . Now , ever since the Heisei series , every single robot has been controlled by pilots from the inside . I'm sorry , but all that succeeds in doing is looking like a carbon copy of Power Rangers , as well as take away MechaGodzilla's mobility . Now , all he does is stand there and shoot some sort of laser or rocket or something . This makes the battle scenes just plain boring . ( Like I said , I didn't see all of it . I only saw up to the part when Kiryu went haywire , for a really stupid reason I should add . The ending might be good , but the rest of a film should be strong enough to make the viewer actually care about , and want to get to , the ending . It is in this that GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA fails . . . . . miserably . ) So , in short , a rather pointless entry in the Godzilla saga . The only reasons for it's existence are : 1 ) To include a MechaGodzilla , which seems to be a requirement for every cycle of Godzilla films . 2 ) To serve as a predecessor to GODZILLA , MOTHRA , MECHAGODZILLA : TOKYO S.O.S . , which looks absolutely fantastic . And if not even that , there's always GODZILLA : FINAL WARS to look forward to . They'd better bring back Anguilus . . . .
    • 089 4  AMENDED REVIEW : I DECIDED TO FIX MY REVIEW AS I NOTICED A MISTAKE THAT I MADE . I have seen many a Godzilla movieS and most are a lot of fun . This one is of the most recent of the series and like many of the new ones its only connected to the very first movie . It has excellent special effects especially the fight scenes between Godzilla and MechaG in the city . Very well done . New weapon is very well done . But it suffers from a boring been there done that plot . Simular characters story lines to the previous G vs Magagurius movie . BUT where Megagurius had sloppy special effects ( especially the big G who looked awful , lifeless and dull ) - Megagurius had a much more original story line . This time old Mecha is back and bigger and meaner and we have these TERRIBLE flashbacks to awful monsters of the past like Bigfoot ! ? ! Why oh why would you put one of the stupidest monsters in a flashback ! ( of course I hear in the new movie being made now they are bringing back King Seesar / Ceasar ! ! ? ! Damn it ! ) . It just shows that although the technology has greatly improved the quality control around these films hasn't . I gave it three stars for the fight scenes which are very well done . But characters and story especially in the first act are a major yawn . * * * * ALSO : my Wife is Deaf so we use the close caption on our TV and there is a GIGANTIC difference between the dubbed in english and the CC . * * * THIS IS THE MISTAKE I MADE , THERE IS NO CC ON THIS DVD IT WAS THE ENGLISH SUBTITLES I WAS WATCHING AND THEY ARE TERRIBLE ! THEY DON'T EVEN MATCH THE DUBBED IN ENGLISH IN ANY WAY WHAT SO EVER .

  • 019 4  Tuesday , March 30 , 2004 / 4 of 5 / As a 34 year old fan of Godzilla from my youth , it's often difficult to know what to make of the post 1978 version . Nostalgia plays its tricks and epics like Destroy all Monsters take their place in the upper echelons of memory . Besides the 1998 American version abomination with Mathew Broderick , I think the series has been nicely resurrected w / the Millennium editions . So far this carries on that torch well . As per usual Godzilla surfaces , does initial damage and causes the powers to be in parliament to adopt new defense strategies . This time it's the creation of a new Mechagodzilla grown and grafted of parts from the 1954 version whose skeleton apparently was still submerged from the oxygen destroyer . Mechagodzilla has some bugs getting out of QA but those are worked through before the showdown . The effects in this film are the best so far , the combination of CG , miniatures and rubber suits is terrific . What impresses an old-school fan is the improvement in the tracer shots hitting Godzilla , his breath , and the speed and execution of the jet craft attacking him . Finally there is great hand to hand combat with actual slugging and crosses being thrown , hah . I was actually sort of shocked when I saw Mechagodzilla palm Godzilla's face and then rocket forward w / Godzilla in tow . Seemed like a slap in the face for big G . The back story is passable , with bumbling father and chief scientist wooing the tormented pilot of Mechagodzilla , still smarting from allowing Godzilla to crush her old teammates . I wonder how the next gen will handle kaiju eiga films , if they'll find them campy and amusing too . Recommended .
    • 003 4  after seeing this godzilla movie , all i can say is that this movie is great . it is one of the best from toho . the movie is very fast paced , the special effects are fantastic , and the action never stops . i have one final word for godzilla fans everywhere { don't miss this movie }
    • 014 4  Great fun ! Absolutely enjoyable Godzilla movie . . . . even the obligatory kid isn't as nauseating as some . Good music and great effects .
    • 023 4  I know Mechagodzilla has been in alot of movies but what are the people of Japan to do when a giant monster attacks them ? make bigger bombs ? better weapons ? leave godzilla alone ? ofcourse not , the answer is obvious to everyone . You build a giant robot version of the thing you want to beat . . . All that said its a fun movie and well worth a watch .
    • 026 4  I read a number of the reviews for this movie and none of them mention how different this movie is from the many that came before it . It has a very human aspect to it , the plot does not just begin with Godzilla or some other monster showing up and subsequent events . It shows the evolution of Mechagodzilla's creation and all those involved from scientists to pilots . And for the first time we have a Godzilla movie where a woman soldier takes center stage .
    • 028 4  this movie starts off with godzilla going around detroying tokyo after 45 years other boring stuff happends then then fbi brings a group of the best sientist to make a mechagodzilla out of the origenal bones of the first godzilla which was killed by the oxagin detroyer other boring stuff happens mecha godzilla is made and godzilla and mechagodzilla fight . godzilla aganist mechagodzilla is so far the best movie of the newest series . Even though the mechagodzilla has been used about 3 times before they still stayed orinal.another good thing about this movie is that the speical effects are surpizingly good for a godzilla movie even the CGI { which is rarly in the movie } also this movie dosent have that much dumb diolog the olny bad thing is that in this film godzillas head is way too little and when there is a strait on camera angle his face looks presed together the same with the new mecha . but the over all film is very entertaing and worth buying or if your not a fan , at least renting
    • 033 4  This is one of my favorite godzilla movies . This version of Mechagodzilla is also the coolest one ever . The special effects were very high quality . Specially considering how most Godzilla movies look . I don't wanna reveal anything about the movie incase you haven't seen it yet , but right in the middle of the movie , Mechagodzilla freaking HIP-CHECKS Godzilla . It Rules .
    • 036 4  I been waiting for this dvd to come out for while and to tell you the truth it is well worth the wait.Mechagodzilla suits are getting better all the time for some reason. The SPX really went into some deeper scenes and it made the movie one of the best G flicks in a while. The fight scenes are done very nice and i had no reason to complain so if I were yall get this G flick its worth it .
    • 043 4  This is by no means a bad Godzilla movie but I will say that I feel that the original MechaGodzilla is much better . Definitely not one of my favorites but get it for the sake of having it in your collection .
    • 047 4  good movie . Is it me or have the melenium serise of G films better then most of the others . its not cause the fx are better and the scripts and acting are the same its just that the directors are such beg fans and grew up watching Godzilla its almost impossible to not be true and to make a great Kaiju film . in this one Godzilla has not been seen since his first attack on tokyo in 1954 . over the decades there have been attacks of other monsters and the japanese think godzilla has cursed them . A new evil Godzilla comes out from the deep and tramples the city to all its Godzilla goodness . and the government create MECHAGODZILLA using cells from the spine of the original godzilla . and yeah youll have to watch it to find out more . Its awsome a great movie and has allot of familiar faces if you watched other G movies . Breat buy . great value . GO GO GODZILLA ! ! ! !
    • 053 4  This is part one of a two parter involving mecha godzilla . The story is decent as well as the graphics .
    • 059 4  Godzilla is back and is bigger and more stronger no stopping him later they find the original godzillas bones then they put it in kiro aka mechagodzilla can it stop godzilla ?
    • 062 4  That movie have great action I like.I like this movie because it has great special effects. The best part I like in the movie is the part where Godzilla and Mecha-Godzilla fight. That movie is great . I can't wait for Godzilla vs.Mothra vs.Mecha-Godzilla : Tokyo S.O.S ; and Godzilla : Final Wars to be available on DVD ; because I'm Godzilla's biggest fan .
    • 067 4  Pretty good movie but should be called Mechagodzilla vs . Godzilla . Godzilla is definatly the villan in this movie . I even found myself routing for Mechagodzilla . I gave this movie only 4 stars because Godzilla is emotionless , no atitude like in previous movies . It doesn't seem like a Godzilla movie if he doesn't get pissed ! ! By the way it ended , you know there will be another movie ! ! Speaking of endings , don't turn it off when the credits roll , there is additional story after the credits
    • 075 4  It's awesome . Lots of special effects . The only thing that kept me from giving it four stars is that most of the movie is about keeping Mechagodzilla from rampaging .
    • 079 4  This was better than Final Wars , so I'm giving it two and half stars , but still it didn't top G2K . I thought the premise of developing a mechanical / living hybrid from the sheletal and DNA remains of the Oxygenized Godzilla from the orginal film was great . I was expecting even more thrills and chills when for a moment after the current Godzilla roars , Mechagodzilla starts realizing what or who it is . This showed a lot of promise since a Japanese created machine potentially running amuck may have caused the Japanese to rely on Godzilla to save them from their own creation . Alas , this wasn't pursued and the film went down hill from there . Too bad .
    • 083 4  This movie is so cool , I need a freakin ' poet to decribe how totally awsome this Godzilla movie is ! ! ! This is by far a kick-ass Godzilla film and if you don't like it , I'll have to come over there and beat you ! ! ! !
    • 086 4  You can sum this Godzilla movie up with once sentence . I have seen all this before . Toho must be running out of ideas to keep bringing back old adversaries . While its nice to look at , and the effects are good , GXM brings nothing new to the table .
    • 088 4  It seems that the Godzilla movies are retrograding with time . This film is seriously bad . The FX are terrible and , overall , outdated . The acting , storyline , dialogue , plot and characters are silly and shallow . A good Godzilla movie can definately be done with great realistic FX , decent story and characters , why do they keep on making this trash ? I prefer the american version of Godzilla to this one 100 times . Even the latest Gamera movies have much better Fx than this one . Overall : MEDIOCRE .

  • the film in Japanese with subtitles ! ( You can choose to watch it dubbed as well , a good option for younger viewers . ) Not only that , but the film is in gorgeous widescreen and 5.1 sound . Keep it up , Sony / TriStar ! This is the way Godzilla should be seen . The film is a fine piece of monster-mashing , better than the metaphysical and out-of-step Godzilla , Mothra and King Ghidorah : Giant Monsters All-Out Attack ( 2001 ) and the somewhat slow Godzilla 2000 ( 1999 ) , but not as wildly fun as Godzilla vs . Megaguirus ( 2000 ) . The director of Megaguirus , Masaaki Tezuka , returns and displays his usual sense of fun and deep love for giant monster movies ( there are many homages to other Japanese monster films throughout ) . Godzilla faces an old foe here . Mechagodzilla first appeared in the 1974 film , Godzilla vs . Mechagodzilla , as an alien-built robot . He came back the next year in what would be the final Godzilla film of the classic era , Terror of Mechagodzilla . The robo-monster returned in the 1990s Godzilla series , this time constructed by the Earth organization G-Force , in Godzilla vs . Mechagodzilla II . This new science-fiction adventure brings the metal Godzilla look-alike back with a new origin story . Like all the recent films , Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla revises the entire Godzilla timeline and starts from scratch . The first Godzilla died in 1954 , but a new one suddenly appears in Japan in 1999 . The government , accustomed to attacks from other monsters over the years , has a special military organization prepared to deal with Godzilla , but Godzilla is too much for them . As the years pass between attacks , Japanese scientists hatch a wild plan to stop Godzilla : use the first Godzilla's skeleton and DNA to create a bio-robot , a ` mechagodzilla ' that they name Kiryu ( a Japanese guardian dragon ) . Unfortunately , the bio-robot has a rather destructive design flaw . . . The monster fights are tremendous , with huge amount of city smashing and the beasts engaging each other in close , furious combat . Kiryu's rampage in Tokyo is a jaw-dropper for sure ; the opening with military laser guns trying to stop Godzilla in a typhoon gets things off to a roaring start , and the lengthy final duel will please every monster movie fan . The visual effects are quite good , but not as creative as in Giant Monsters All-Out Attack . The score from Ohshima Michiru is fabulous ; she's the best composer on the Godzilla series outside of the original maestro Akira Ifukube . What holds the film back are some slow patches in the first half-hour and many unexplained details about Kiryu . The redesigned Godzilla suit , adapted from the one used in Godzilla 2000 and Megaguirus also presents problems . Godzilla moves far less here than he usually does , and it often seems that no one is in the costume . He exhibits much less personality and animation , and doesn't dominate the film the way he should . Kiryu instead steals the show : this is the best Mechagodzilla of them all , and it's astonishing to watch it in action . The human story is surprisingly well done , with excellent actors who take their jobs seriously . The heroine is a pilot with a guilt complex about an earlier debacle against Godzilla who gets her second chance to prove herself against the monster . Her relationship with the lonely daughter of one of the designers of Kiryu is quite touching . ( Strangely , the final scene about this relationship occurs AFTER the end credits . Weird place for it , so make sure you stick around until the very end of the film . ) Japan has already released a direct sequel to this movie ( in which classic monster Mothra also gets involved ! ) , so let's hope Sony / TriStar will release that one soon as well . If you love giant monsters or good old-fashioned science-fiction film fun , get this DVD . ROAR ON GODZILLA !
    • 001 4  I've been a life-long Godzilla fan , and I've been dying to see this movie for a while . Now that its finally out on DVD , I must say I was entertained by it , but not overly impressed . The best point is that its still a Godzilla movie . . . watching Godzilla rise out of Tokyo bay to unleash senseless destruction just never gets old . The Godzilla suit in this film is slightly modified from the Godzilla 2000 / Megaguirus suit , and looks alot better . But the literal ' shining ' star of this movie is MechaGodzilla . This is the best design yet for MechaGodzilla , out of all the ' Godzilla vs . Mechagodzilla ' movies ( 4 in all , counting this one , and not the sequel which is coming soon ) . As others had pointed out , this movie was similar to Godzilla X Megaguirus . . . too similar , in fact . It had virtually the same pacing and story development , and a nearly identical ending . Other flaws included Godzilla's stationary reactions . . . he's getting rocked with missiles and ' Mazer ' beams , and they just have a big dummy standing there , completely motionless . After the outstanding effects from the last movies , you'd think they could do better than that . And once again , this is an ' origin retelling ' , in that its another ' alternate universe ' storyline that retells Godzilla's origins . I don't think there's been a Godzilla movie at all within the past 15 years that hasn't started the origin of Godzilla over from scratch . Complaints aside , this movie has to be commended on a few things . As already stated , the MechaGodzilla design is probably the best design they've had yet for it . The battles , though somewhat short , were well done . Godzilla was more sinister than usual in this particular film , being much more liberal with his atomic breath and wreaking havoc . The one part that stood out the most in my mind , and is definitely my favorite part of the film , is when MechaGodzilla goes ' berserk ' . Clearly inspired from Neon Genesis Evangelion , MechaG's residual DNA memories , being a result of constructing the machine from the corpse of the 1954 Godzilla , get triggered by this new Godzilla's infamous roar , sending MechaGodzilla into an absolute frenzy . Unfortunately that story angle was not pursued any further in the movie , and its something that I hope they go into in the sequel . Overall , Godzilla X MechaG was good . . . but compared to some of the more recent films , particularly Giant Monsters All-Out Attack ( one of my all-time favorites ) , GXMG just didn't stand out too much . I hope the sequel picks it up at a better pace , since I still enjoyed this film immensely . Nevertheless , if you're a G fan , get this film . You won't regret it . . . its definitely worth the purchase .
    • 002 4  Scene for scene , this movie is almost a carbon copy of it's predecessor , Godzilla vs . Megaguirus . It is obvious that the same writers and director were at work here again , but with a much better finished product . One of the major differences that sets this one apart are the special effects . Now , I have been a Godzilla fan for many years and I have nothing but love for the cheesy effects from past films . However , the effects in this installment are very impressive . I cannot recall at any point in the movie , saying to myself , Ha , just like the old days . No sir , the effects were good , rivaling most Hollywood productions of today . Also , the pacing of the film was very tight and moved at a very good speed . This film is about 20 minutes shorter than the prior film . I'm not sure if a new editor was at work or not , but whomever was in charge gets kudos from me . Also , the music in the film is almost the same as Godzilla vs . Megaguirus but with enough subtle changes to keep it fresh . Michiru Ohshima has brought a new level of suspense and excitement to the franchise and I hope she stays on board for many more installments . My only negative regarding the score is that it would be nice to hear more of Akira Ifukube's original theme . Besides that , well done . Now , being American , I can't accurately comment on the acting but I thought each performance was believable . Yumiko Shaku was a good leading lady and is very easy on the eyes . There are also cameos featuring other Godzilla alumni including Misato Tanaka , the heroine from the previous film , here as a hospital nurse . Being able to see these two gorgeous women is worth the price of admission for me alone . The franchise seems to be in very capable hands . Having said that , I wouldn't mind seeing a more escapist approach in upcoming installments with aliens , space monsters , and maybe a cheesy effect or two . . . just like the old days .
    • 004 4  WOW ! ! ! Godzilla keeps getting better and better ! This film rocked , but Godzilla vs . Megaguirus is still my favorite film , but barely ! This movie was soooo close , just 1 / 4 of a mile , and it would be my favorite film , but this is my second favorite film ! The Japanese military is constructing a new Mechagodzilla , or should I say Kiryu ( Mechanical Dragon ) , to protect Japan from Godzilla . The battle was great and the special effects were so loud , my windows were shaking ! Kiryu was great , with a new weapon , absolute zero cannon ! It was a little closer to Godzilla vs . Megaguirus for my favorite film , but this was great ! It will be on DVD in March with English dubs and Japanese track with , hopefully , real English subtitles and , possibly , more extras ! Don't miss this film ! Nice Job Godzilla ! ! !
    • 005 4  Great special effects , set design , lots of action and fast moving . This is one one the better Godzilla movies . It has the best pre-title sequence out of the entire series . The action sequences are loaded with explosions and lots of fun . Mecha-Godzilla is really cool looking and is loaded with options such as laser beams that shoot from his eyes and missles that launch from his fingers . This was the third model of Mecha-Godzilla . This one offers alot more options that are standard as opposed to the previous two base models . Godzilla will outlive us all , let's bask in the glow of his majestic presence .
    • 006 4  I grew up eating , drinking , and breathing Godzilla . I cheered him on in my youth , laughed hysterically at him during my adolescence ( god , some of those old ones were cheesy ! ) , and almost shed a tear when he melted down some years ago . Now things have come full circle and I am thrilled with the new millenium Godzilla series . No more crummy effects , laughable attacks , crappy dubbing , or kiddy music . Godzilla's back for real . While this movie's not as good as GMK , it's not too inferior either . The characters are good , Mechagodzilla ( dubbed Kiryu in this version ) has never been more awesome , and the effects are , at times , just beautiful . Kiryu's Absolute-Zero weapon is amazing . Godzilla himself gets a bit shafted in this film , though people have made too much of the couple of seconds where there appears to be nobody even in the suit . In , fact , Godzilla doesn't do much at all aside from the opening sequence and the final battle . However , Kiryu more than makes up for his organic double's lack of action by freaking out and trashing the city all day until his power runs out and his handlers go to collect him . The story is genuinely interesting rather than the typical waste-time-until-the-next-kaiju-battle plots of movies past . The big payoff at the end of it all is absolutely worth it . The final battle is possibly the most exciting kaiju battle I've ever seen . When Kiryu comes flying in to halt Godzilla's advance it's shot so brilliantly you'll have to see it again and again . The best part , however , is when the heroine climbs into the downed Kiryu and takes manual control of the giant robot monster . The tactics she uses agains Godzilla and the way the whole sequence plays out just makes you feel like a kid cheering your favorite kaiju all over again . Highly recommended .
    • 008 4  Praise Sony / TriStar for their quick release of this recent ( December 2002 ) Godzilla film ! Although there are no extras , this DVD offers fans of Japanese giant monster movies exactly what they want : the film in Japanese with subtitles !
    • 009 4  Ive seen this on VCD and its great , so Im sure the DVD with rock ! ! . Godzilla and Mecha-Godzilla battle it out and trash everything in their way . Great cgi effects blended with the classic ' big rubber suit ' and minitures will provide action to please all . If you liked Godzilla vs . Megaguirus , or the recent Gamera movies , then grab this DVD !
    • 011 4  Godzilla against Mechagodzilla 5 Stars In 1954 , a Godzilla creature arises from the sea and destroys Tokyo , killing millions . Luckily , the creature is killed with a super-weapon called the Oxygen Destroyer . 1961 , Mothra attacks Japan . The Japanese retaliate with a heat ray gun . 1967 , Gaira strikes and is driven away with newly developed maser-tanks . 1999 , a second Godzilla creature attacks Japan , the military is powerless to stop him . 2003 , Now . A powerful weapon has been built , a Mechagodzilla code named : Kiryu , to stop Godzilla . When all else fails , will it be enough to stop the King of the Monsters ? An action filled ride . Excellent special effects and monster battles . A good story , above normal performances , and excellent pacing . ( Warning : Spoilers ) While one might have the opinion that this lacks the sheer audacity of Masaaki Tezuka's previous work . Godzilla Vs . Megaguirus is , on it's own , an excellent addition to the Millennium series . It certainly does have one of Godzilla's absolute best beginnings . Godzilla rising out of the sea , black as the night sky , walking through everything in his path , not paying any attention to all the weaponry being used against him . Some people found the scenes where Godzilla simply stands there and takes all the artillery fake and annoying , personally I was of the opinion it was a testament to his invincibility & ' bravado . ' The sheer supernatural intelligence Godzilla displays as he ` defeats ' the maser tank , is great . The heroine is interesting and played with real ability by the actress . The scientist and his daughter is nothing new , but they form the triangle with the woman very well . Kumi Mizuno is a welcome addition . The Prime Minister and the officer in charge of Kiryu add true authority to the leadership side of things . The special effects and special camera shots are all done very well and no wires or other effects are visible . A definite improvement . Mechagodzilla's newest design is great , giving the robot new power and beauty all at the same time . The fight scenes are excellent clashes of power , featuring some great moments and the ending is perfect . The music actually seems to have improved since Megaguirus , especially Godzilla's theme and the other themes are all very well done . As others have noted , the fight scenes seem to mimic King Kong Vs . Godzilla . Mechagodzilla being flown in by aircraft is one example . One opponent walking away after being blasted with ray breath , the use of electricity , Godzilla being picked up and thrown by his tail , and the draw ending , with the two opponents hitting the water are others . Finally , the shot of Godzilla walking into the ocean away from the camera . However , it also mimics Kong Vs . Godzilla in another non-flattering way . One of the costumes seems below par and unfortunately it's Godzilla's this time . While any Godzilla costume that looks like Godzilla is great , this suit seems to be the least of the entire millennium series . Let's face it , nobody was going to reuse the GMK Godzilla costume , nobody could see that Godzilla as a good guy anyway . However , this suit lacks any of the personality of that suit or the G - 2000 suit . The G - 2000 was quite possibly the best Godzilla suit of modern times , it seems incomprehensible to replace it . The head is too small and lacks any expression whatsoever . The eyes are too big and fake looking when wide open . Even during the fight scene , Godzilla seems to hold his own , but on the whole it seems to be Mechagodzilla . In G . Vs . Megaguirus , Godzilla displayed real intelligence , real fighting ability . Here , it's a wonder this Godzilla didn't lose . Of course this movie cannot be fully judged until it's follow up : Godzilla , Mechagodzilla , Mothra : Tokyo S.O.S . is released . Hopefully , all the problems ( all of which are matters of opinion ) , will be remedied in that . To sum up this movie , it's still great and still worth buying , just like any other Godzilla movie .
    • 012 4  I am a big fan of Godzilla since my childhood . And this film have very good special effects . The guy in the rubber suit and the 3D animation is very cool . By moments , Mechagodzilla remember me a Battletech warrior . But this film is pure action and pure emotion . A wonderful recomendation por all the Godzilla fans .
    • 013 4  I saw this movie I feel it is probley one of the best movies from the man ( Godzilla ) I have ever seen . It is alittle slow at the beginning just like alot of the Godzilla movies are , but once the fighting begains , you are stuck and your eyes are glued to the action . Mechagodzilla is alot faster in this movie , he is not as slow and clumsy , like in the past movies he has been in , and at the end you are left hanging wondering will there be another battle between the 2 monsters . Highly recomended great action . Review by Lyle , Ocheltree
    • 015 4  The 4072 - member strong Anti-Megalosaurus Force ( AMF ) was established in 1966 to defend Japan from monsters . Unfortunately , in 1999 , when called upon to do just that , the AMF fails miserably ( you would have thought that after being established for 33 years , the AMF would have been a lot more effective ) . The Prime Minister , with the support of the Japanese people , decides to do something about the situation and calls upon the best scientific minds that Japan has to offer , in an attempt to construct a bio-robot . . . Mechagodzilla ( also known as Kiryu ) , to battle Godzilla . By recovering an inter-spinal cell from the salvaged skeleton of the Godzilla that nearly destroyed Tokyo in 1954 , the team of scientists goes about constructing their mechanical marvel , which is finally completed in 2003 ( just in time to defend Japan from Godzilla's latest attack ) . The original Mechagodzilla , from the Terror of Mechagodzilla , was a self-sustaining robot , however this latest version has to be powered and operated by an external group of technicians , including the AC3 - White Heron aircraft , which is also responsible for air-lifting Mechagodzilla to its ' destination . While all of this is taking place , a brilliant young MASER operator named Akane ( a member of the AMF ) struggles to cope with the fact that her actions ( or lack thereof ) , probably caused the death of a number of her colleagues during the 1999 attack by Godzilla . Watch as Akane tries to come to grips with her disposition , while suffering ridicule at the hands of one of her fellow AMF team members . Will she ever be trusted again ? ? Watch the DVD and find out ! ! The special effects in the movie are amazing ( I especially enjoyed the smoke trail of the missiles fired by Mechagodzilla ) and the CGI images are kept to a minimum ( I still prefer the Godzilla characters in the rubber suits ) . One of the interesting things about the movie is that we're supposed to believe that Godzilla can be destroyed in a matter of 40 seconds . . . uhhh . . . it's not going to happen . By the way , one of the things I have noticed while having watched Godzilla movies since my youth , is that the Japanese don't use either structural steel nor re-bar in their building construction ( the buildings fall like a ton of bricks . ) Once a fan . . . always a fan of Godzilla ! ! !
    • 016 4  GMK got a lot of attention because of the director ( Gamera series ) So when I decided to catch up on things G on a Friday night , I rented that and this film . Call me crazy but I actually liked this one better . I even thought the effects were better , though it was shot on a lower budget . GMK took itself a bit too seriously , given its silly plot , and I didn't care for the new monster designs . ( Except Mothra , which actually approached looking and acting like a moth for a change . . . ) Back to this film . . . Japanese kaiju is all about the effects and the fights . It's like Sumo or something , its become a cultural phenomenon I was caught up on since I eas a kid . No , they're not as realistic as well-done CGI but there's something about minatures , puppets , guys in suits that much more entertaining than the computerized stuff . Not to get heady but maybe its why an impressionistic painting of a fruit bowl is more interesting than an ultra-realistic painting of the same still life . Dunno . There will be a new Ultraman series , Ultraman Nexus in Japan . The new producer wanted to bring the sense of wonder back to the series , lost since the show first aired in the 60 ' s . He hired the effects guy from this film to make it happen . I can see why . Fun , underrated G-Film . Surprising effects . Overshadowed by GMK but I found it to be a better film . And , yes , the plot is contrived and silly , and yes its stupidity is part of the fun .
    • 017 4  Holy cow what a treat . The special effects are amazing . The new godzilla is incredibly lifelike . Mechagodzilla is very stunning and interesting in its creation . They tie in the old original godzilla stories very well . The actors are actually entertaining and decent . One thing that really impressed me the most was the story itself . They made a good compelling story that tied in little humans to huge godzilla . They kept the original godzilla theme and made it compelling . I wasn't watching the movie just to wait for the godzilla scenes , I actually liked the story itself . A must have for all sci-fi fans .
    • 018 4  This movie is , as other reviews have said , very similar to Godzilla verse Megaguirus . Both movies center around a tough-as-nails female pilot seeking revenge on Godzilla . Both save their monster fighting for the end of the movie . But Godzilla against MechaGodzilla is superior in almost every way . This movie has ( in my opinion ) a more interesting monster fight than G vs Megaguirus . The special effects are better , and the plot is ( again in my opinion ) much less boring . And a big plus : I found the dubbing to be much better for this movie than its predecessor . This of course makes the movie much more watchable . If you're looking for a fun monster movie this is a good choice . If you're looking for a more serious movie , however , I recommend the original Godzilla and Godzilla 1985 .
    • 020 4  I am a die hard fan , but was disappointed with this film . The storyline seemed way too contrived , especially between the female lead and the doctor who has an interest in her . I've seen better fight scenes in the previous 2 films . There were times when Godzilla just stood there while he was blasted with lasers and missles . Most of the special effects were pretty good , but there were some real boners too . For instance , they added a black and white computer animated sequence of the 1954 Godzilla . This scene is just a couple of seconds long , but very poorly done . I am a huge fan of the 1993 Godzilla vs . Mecha-Godzilla film and thought that this entry was a lot less entertaining .
    • 021 4  I own the Region 2 and Region 3 versions of this movie , and it is good , but no where near as good as GMK . Anyway , it is only 88 mins , so you barely get by with 20 minutes before Godzilla pops up . The final battle is excellent as well . Unfortunately , like the dvds released by Sony for GMK and GxM , this dvd will most likely also have dubtitles ( follows the english dubbeds dialog rather than actually translations ) instead of subtitles .
    • 022 4  Though part of the latest ( 3rd ) generation Godzilla series - - the Millenium series that follows Godzilla 2000 - - this movie doesn't live up to expectations . As with the previous movie in the Godzilla Millenium series - - Godzilla vs Megaguirus - - the directing is poor . The director for this movie is NOT the same as the one for Godzilla 2000 , and that also explains the different feel of this movie . Only the costume and effects remain the same . For your information , the director who worked on Godzilla 2000 also worked on Godzilla vs Destroyah and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla in the 90 ' s Godzilla series . . . which were all some of the best Godzilla movies . If you are one of those people , like me , who found those 3 movies great but the ones in-between so-so , and didn't really know why , well now you do . This 2000 series DVD of Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla was directed by mostly the same people as those who did Godzilla vs Megaguirus and it shows . However , this film is not nearly as bad , thanks to some faster pacing and a more inspired enemy monster ( Mechagodzilla , he's a classic no matter how he changes ) . Flame breath has reverted to blue again , but it's the same Godzilla 2000 costume and other than the color about the same type of new flame effect . This film is nowhere near the glory of the better Godzilla films of the 90 ' s however , like I mentioned above , nor is it anywhere near as good as Godzilla 2000 . The Japanese still have a way to go before their movie-making and directing abilities are up to American standards , one realizes , when they watch this latest representative of the Godzilla genre .
    • 024 4  This movie is great . If you're a Godzilla fan , this is what you have been waiting for . It's got a lot of great action scenes , surprisingly good special effects , and a human element that you can give a crap about but at the same time doesn't get in the way of the monsters doing their thing . If Toho had made more Godzilla films like this one , maybe they wouldn't have had to send the franchise back into retirement . Who knows when we'll see Godzilla in a movie again , but at least for now , we've got Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla .
    • 025 4  It was not too long before I watched this movie that I had seen Godzilla v.s . Megaguirus , So I was hoping it would be the same Godzilla , so when I saw that his heat beam wasn't red , I was very dissapointed . Still , MechaG ( as he is called ) is absolutely incredible . The most streamlined and most Godzilla-like Mecha-Godzilla ever . But it's a little too much like godzilla X Megaguirus . Still , It's good , but not as good as Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S . Get this movie
    • 029 4  How many of you get annoyed as I do by all the missed shots from technologically advanced weapons missing a target as big as Godzilla ? Well , in this movie ALL the weapons hit ! That alone was enough to make me an instant fan . Beyond that , Mechagodzilla looks amazing ! There's a lot of Gundam design going into him like his weapon pods and head fin . The rockets leave smoking trails as they twist and turn . Very cool ! Also , there are no glaring holes in the plot ! I was shocked as this usually makes up most of the entertainment during Godzilla movies . Don't get me wrong , I love that stuff ! But I was truly happy to find a strong story for once ! I wish there were more movies that were at this level of storytelling and effects .
    • 030 4  Well , this is the 26th movie for the big G . This movie is pretty good in my opinion . The main character seems to have many problems and she is very captivating to watch . She pulls off her job very well . As far as the fighting goes , that is done pretty well to . MechaG looks better than ever , and even has a name in this movie . He is called Kiryu . The main plot is Japan trying to build a weapon that can stop Godzilla . So , many scientists gather to try and come up with a solution . They decide to remove the late 50 ' s Godzilla remains from the ocean and use them to build their weapon , MechaGodzilla . There are two battles between the two . They are both done very well I think . The only gripe I have is that it could have been a bit longer . There were far too many human scenes in my opinion . More monster fights would have been better . But still , this is a good DVD to get , and if you're a fan of Godzilla , then you should own this cool flick .
    • 031 4  Being a lifelong Godzilla fan , I was excited to hear that this film would be released onto DVD shortly after the previous two Godzilla films . But after watching the disappointing Godzilla X Megaguirus and realizing that Masaki Tezuka also directed this film . I decided to expect the worst . After watching the film when I came home from the video store , I was a bit more impressed this time by Mr . Tezuka . The story seemed to be a little more well-rounded and the movie , as a whole , seemed much better than Godzilla X Megaguirus . But anyone who pays close attention to the two films will notice that the stories are pretty much identical ! Something I found non-original on Mr . Tezuka's part and disappointing considering that this was his second shot at directing a Godzilla film . Also his treatement of the Monster King was poor . During Godzilla and Mechagodzilla's first encounter , Mechagodzilla fires a barrage of missiles at Godzilla , and Godzilla just stands there , roars , and retreats into the sea . The ending battle , while somewhat better , still made Godzilla look dumbfounded and cowardly . The special effects were very top-notch considering Godzilla films have had a bad reputation for producing some cheesey effects . Overall , Godzilla X Mechagodzilla is somewhat better than Godzilla X Megaguirus , but it still falls pretty short . I wasn't impressed much by the story ( since it's pretty much an exact duplicate of GXM ) and I also wasn't impressed much by the monster battles . I look at this film as one of the worst and also as one of the best in the Millennium series ; but that all depends on how I look at the film . The film excels in certain areas , but then hurts itself in some of the more crucial areas . In the end , while I have constant mixed feelings on the film , I'll conclude by stating that it is a decent / average Godzilla film .
    • 032 4  Overal this is an entertaining G-film with a few suprises here and there . Now to the DVD , overal it's worth buying alone because of it's acurate subtitles . Yep now unlike GMK and GXM the subtitles are correct . The DVD transfer is good , but not without problems . Grain seems to scater through the whole film , especially during the night scenes . The audio , is clear and there is some good suround activity . As for extras , just some unrelated to the film trailers .
    • 038 4  Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla is director Masaaki Tezuka's daikaiju masterpeice . It is a great giant monster film punctuated by fierce , thrilling battles between Godzilla and the giant robot built to finally stop him . Mechagodzilla , or Kiryu ( Machine Dragon ) is Japan's line drawn in the sand . At great risk and expense , the government decides to use the DNA from the bones of the original Godzilla to construct the ultimate anti-Godzilla weapon . Tezuka's tight and fast-paced direction is complimented by Michiru Oshima's beautiful and powerful score . The theme of the value of all life is movingly presented by the the main human characters , especially Yumiko Shaku's Akane , who directly pilots Kiryu in the fight against Godzilla in the exciting final battle that sprawls over Tokyo . This great megalopolis is even completely blacked out in a stunning sequence . However , all does not go well with Kiryu at first , and the result is initially disastrous . See this great kaiju film and enjoy a wild ride .
    • 039 4  I don't have too much to add to this discussion - - I thought this film was great and I enjoyed it a lot - - my only gripe is all the complaints about how ' motionless ' Godzilla appears at times , ie : when he is being hit by missiles and such - - From my perspective , it seemed believable scale-wise . Godzilla not only seems to have an extraordinarilly tough skin , but also a tremendous amount of sheer mass . I mean , if we imagine he is comparable mass-wise to the Mecha Godzilla in this film , MG staight up waltzes right through a free standing building * taller than him * ! barely even slowing down ! So , I am not surprised that the pathetic missiles they throw at him don't even cause him to flinch , I assumed that the only reason they use missiles at all was to distract his attention on accasion . I think it would be roughly comparable to throwing snap-caps at The Preadator . I think it adds to his mystique as being impregnable as well , I mean , if he gets all feisty about rockets they wouldn't have had to build MG in the first place !
    • 040 4  Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla ( the word against instead of vs obviously to avoid confusion with the six hundred other movies called Godzilla vs . MechaGodzilla ) is no better or worse than average for a Godzilla movie . The special effects are on par with the rest of the recent entries , and the final monster brawl is one of the better in the millennium series . However , with the possible exception of Megaguirus , this has the least interesting story of the millennium films . The love story is dull and unbelievable ( c'mon , the government makes a big honkin ' Godzilla-shaped monster ? That's just plan dumb ) , the characters are uninteresting , and the conflicts are basically unmemorable . It's a bad sign in any Godzilla movie when the politicians become the most interesting characters ! That being said , Godzilla fans might want to pick this up ( at a reduced rate , of course ) for the monster battles . The DVD from Columbia Tristar is in its original 2.35 : 1 aspect ratio . There is a bit of grain and edge-enhancement , but overall it looks fine , and just as good as the other recent entries . Purists will be happy to know that the original Japanese audio track is included along with the English dub . Other than trailers for several Asian movies ( including Returner and The Vampire Effect ) , there are no extras .
    • 041 4  This is beyond a shadow of a doubt the best Godzilla film ever . To all those who say this is movie stinks ; stop smoking whatever your currently smoking , because this is one of the most entertaining movies of all time . Godzilla looks great and I have never been that happy to see him decimate the Japanese military before . Don't believe it when people say this film has bad special effects , if anything most of the special effects rival those of most big budget American films . As for MechaGodzilla who is actually called Kiryu in this film ( the name definetly gives him much more of an identity ) , he is awesome never have seen a more awe-inspiring mecha . All in all I would recomend this film to anyone who is willing to watch this film with an open mind .
    • 042 4  This review is from : Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ( DVD ) This is by no means a bad Godzilla movie but I will say that I feel that the original MechaGodzilla is much better . Definitely not one of my favorites but get it for the sake of having it in your collection .
    • 044 4  This review is from : Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ( DVD ) Like the rest of the Millennium Godzilla series , Godzilla vs . MechaGodzilla offers a new origin for the current Godzilla , ignoring everything in the series except the original 1954 film . Godzilla appears less impressive than in the previous , very enjoyable Masaaki Tezuka outing , Godzilla vs . Megaguirus , the suit being overly bulky with a disproportionately small head . The new MechaGodzilla ( Kiryu ) , however , appears both impressive and believable - - at least in context . After nearly 50 years , Godzilla reappears in Japan . . . though a visually exciting opening relates that , during these years , other monsters ( including Mothra from the 1963 film of the same name and Gaila from War of the Gargantuas ) have raided the nation . To fend off the King of the Monsters , scientists create a powerful mechanical beast known as Kiryu ( Sacred Dragon ) - - built over the skeleton of the original Godzilla ( killed by the oxygen destroyer in the original 1954 film ) and controlled by computers powered by Godzilla DNA . During its first battle with Godzilla , Kiryu's DNA reacts to the new monster's presence , and MechaGodzilla goes berserk . Eventually regaining control , the defense force once again pits Kiryu against Godzilla , and the two engage in a ferocious battle . Kiryu is piloted by a brave young woman named Akane Yashiro ( wonderfully played by Yumiko Shaku ) , who has been emotionally devastated by the loss of her CO to Godzilla during its first raid . An agreeable human drama augments the exciting battles , although the ending is abrupt and rather flat , leaving one feeling ultimately unfulfilled .

    • 046 4  This review is from : Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ( DVD ) good movie . ! ! !
    • 048 4  This review is from : Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ( DVD ) I was interested in seeing what Toho would do with Mechagodzilla with this new entry in the long running series . As a long time Godzilla fan , I've always enjoyed the Mechagodzilla films . I think Mechagodzilla is such a cool creation , and one of Godzilla's most dangerous foes , usually controlled by invading aliens , I heard that in this entry Mechagodzilla was actually going to play the good guy ? ? ! ! Godzilla is back smashing his way through another Japanese city , Tateyama this time , and the Japanese government has had enough . Using the latest technology and an unusual source of giant lizard DNA ( sorry no spoilers here . . . and try not to read too much about the film if possible ) , the government contructs a giant robot to defend the world against Godzilla's rampages . Mechagodzilla , called Kiryu in this film is piloted and controlled by an elite group of fighter pilots led by Lt . Akane Yashiro , whose entire unit was killed in a battle with Godzilla at the start of the film . Mechagodzilla and Godzilla both look fantastic here . Godzilla looks downright primal and viscious , and Mechagodzilla looks very cool . Their battles are pretty cool , and inventive . The story's focus on Akane trying to rebuild her life , and her interaction with a scientist and his daughter is done very well . I think the only reason I would deduct stars from the film is because it feels incomplete . You really have to watch Tokyo S.O.S . to see the how the whole story plays out . . . and even then the human elements of this film are largely forgotten . Still , it's definately worth checking this film out to see the upgraded Mechagodzilla , and the fight scenes look great . . . just make sure to pick up Tokyo S.O.S . as well .

    • 050 4  Godzilla shows up , the government builds Mechagodzilla ( here called Kiryu for some reason ) , and they fight . The subpar special effects , dull plot , slow pacing , and forgettable characters make this a dud . The new Mechagodzilla is visually unimpressive and does not move the way a giant robot would , unlike the superior 1993 version , which actually looked metallic . The concept of Kiryu being built around the bones of the 1954 Godzilla was interesting , but not explored to any real depth . While the Kiryu-gone-wild sequence is well-done , everything else about the film is utterly inept . Why did Toho keep bringing back Masaaki Tezuka to direct these films ?
    • 051 4  wonderful film in an incredible series . . . . Godzilla is simply wonderful , and family friendly . . . . Get into Godzilla films today , you will not regret it !
    • 052 4  This review is from : Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ( DVD ) This is part one of a two parter involving mecha godzilla . The story is decent as well as the graphics .
    • 056 4  Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla : DVD Movie Review Grade : A - Another one of the unofficial Godzilla Millennium series , Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla has to be one of the best so far . The special effects in more recent Godzilla movies have been getting a lot better , even though the campy 60 ' s , 70 ' s , and 80 ' s Godzilla films are still fun to watch . Once again erasing all of Godzilla's past battles and assuming that he's only attacking Japan once , GXMG takes MechaGodzilla to a whole new level . This time armed with an arsenal of new weapons , most notably a new type of gun that freezes things to absolute zero , and then shatters them at a molecular level . Can Big G stand up to the improved ( for the fourth time . . . ) MechaGodzilla ? Of course not , but there will be some pretty awesome battles along the way . . . Another Godzilla film that features more action over story-just the way I think we all like it-GXMG is definitely a step up for the Godzilla series . ( Godzilla - 50 + years ! ! ) I guess I'll just never get tired of Godzilla fighting MechaGodzilla . ( Godzilla's best foe , - yes , he even beats King Ghidorah ! )
    • 057 4  This review is from : Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ( DVD ) I am an advid G-Fan . I love Godzilla and all the lore . This movie was just ok , It wasn't as good as the previous movie or as good as Final Wars .

    • 060 4  Well , MechaGodzilla has always been my favorite Godzilla foe , and this one doesn't dissapoint . There's good action , the plot is appreciable , and the music is adequate . Of course , throw in an incredibly beautiful lead actress , and , well . . . OF course , I prefer the Mechagodzilla sent by aliens , but in terms of design this one beats all the previous ones . The Godzilla suit is also pretty good , as are the effects in general . All in all , a very good Godzilla movie . Belz . . .
    • 061 4  This film is more about Kiryu ( aka MechaGodzilla ) rather than G himself . Actually , G rarely does anything in this film . The first few minutes are very good , but later on , he just stands still during the battles ! ( ? ) ! anyway , the storyline is typical . The gov't decided to build a robotic Godzilla , using the original ' 54 Godzilla bones , to defend Japan from Godzilla . The battle scenes are decent . Kiryu knows how to kick butt and obvisiously Godzilla just takes it without putting up too much of a fight . As for the dvd itself , the video quality is amazing and the audio features the original japanese language along with an english dub . Extras are of trailers for non-G related films - - - - - - - - For those that do not know , this is part 1 of a 2 film series . The sequel , Godzilla : TOKYO S.O.S . is not currently available on DVD , but hopefully soon .
    • 063 4  Now , I've seen almost every Godzilla movie out there and this is by far the best one ! The special effects were outstanding , the acting was outstanding , and the music was outstanding ! If you haven't seen this awsome Godzilla movie yet , then get ( . . . ) to the nearest Blockbuster ! ! ! !
    • 064 4  This most recent addition to the Godzilla series features yet another incarnation of Mechagodzilla , but is called Kiryu , save for one slip of the tongue , and is more cyborg clone than actual robot ( which leads to a nicely handled malfunction during the first face-off with The Big G ) . Screenwriter Wataru Mimura and Director Masaaki Tezuka have boiled down the stories and concepts to the most chemically pure Godzilla movie in ages . The human element is well developed , but overly simplistic , and the film compensates with monster battles that are nothing short of spectacular . This movie is a briskly paced 88 minutes of pure monster mayhem that no Kaiju fan will want to miss out on . It just misses the classic mark by a split hair . Highly recommended .
    • 065 4  I had not seen a Godzilla movie since the 1970s , so I was surprised by the use of miniatures . Check out the extreme widescreen . Don't buy this movie thinking you're getting Star Wars . It's a B movie . If you keep that in mind , you will enjoy it . I admit I saw Yumiko Shako in The Princess Blade before I bought Godzilla , so I was hoping for at least one bikini scene . Maybe next time . The movie moves along pretty quickly without a lot of baloney . I thought the subtitles would have been more accurate because it is the domestic version . I enjoyed some of the jokes in the movie and watching Yumiko struggle with the joystick . ( Hey ! Shut up ! ) This is a good movie ; just don't take it seriously .
    • 066 4  What can i say , i was pertty desperate after seeing the last godzilla , v Megaghirus , and saw the special effects , the crew didnt even hide the wires when Megaghiurs was flying . This one is incredible , the special effects are awsome and G is awsome . I would say its very close has looking has good has Gamera revenge of iris and that says a lot .
    • 068 4  This movie is the first of the Kiryu Saga which is the stroy of a metal little kaiju . Seriously folks , if you want to see a lot of Godzilla screentime then this aint it . Godzilla isn't really the main focus here . Seems more like the main story is trying to control Kiryu and getting to know him . Still , The Big-G Does get a worthy place in this movie . For one , this is based off Godzilla 2000 ' s design but it's better . For one Godzilla doesn't look like his green and purple neon prediscesor . Instaed he's back in grey . His heat ray is back to being blue ( what a releif ) and his head is back to normal size . Then there's the matter of Kiryu . Althoguh he gets in the way of Godzilla's backstory Kiryu still gets a much needed character story . Something many previous Mechagodzillas didn't get . Kiryu actually has a mind and has feelings while the other MGs were pretty much just being controled . Then there's the final battle itself . Its really entertaining but goes on a little long , plus Kiryu breaks the laws of gravity a couple times . Overall this is an okay movie but not Godzilla movie . Godzilla seems more like a sideplot in my opinion but it's still a very good movie .
    • 070 4  I was lucky enough to pick up an advanced copy of this film on dvd as I have no credit card and no bank account , and despite the lack luster reviews I've read from the Godzilla fan boys this is a much better than I could have hoped . The main problem with the film is that the special effects and directing attempt to over step it's self a bit . Most of the film takes place during the day , as apposed to Godzilla 200 , which love ot or hate it was one of my recent favorites . Day time fights and action really show the flaws in the film , and from time to time you can tell their taking this way too seriously , much the like the horrendously boring gamera trilogy . In the end it's all about the fights , which , as I mentioned aren't too well done in terms of shooting , but the ideas are fantastic and the creativity of it shines through . There are some awsome momemts in the film , especially the fights between the two monsters , and the basic plot was definatly clever ( inane enviromental messages and the beauty of life crap aside ) . Definatly a must for any Godzilla fan !
    • 071 4  Another great DVD , Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla . Purchased this DVD to add to my Grandsons Godzilla Movie Collection . Enjoyed this DVD !
    • 072 4  When I saw gxmg last month , I was convinced that this was the best godzilla movie I had seen.Everything was damn perfect , the story , the plot , the special effects , the score ( although I was kind of dissapointed at the fact that there wasn't any of Akira Ifukube's music in it ) . Yumiko Shaku did an outstanding performance as Akane ( the main star in the movie , apart from Kiryu and godzilla ) and the special effects were almost as good as the ones from the gamera hesei series. It wasn't as dramatic as GMK but there was certainly a lot more action. The story was the best in all of the godzilla movies. One of my favorite scenes is when Kiryu starts attacking everything on sigth when he hears godzilla's roar. This is the kind of movie that will satisfy all godzilla fans and leave them looking forward to seeing godzilla : Tokyo S.O.S.A must see movie .
    • 073 4  Short and sweet : I was a bit disappointed in the lack of action and the seemingly poor conversion to English language ( I apologize for that comment if Toho actually made the film so unrecoverable ) . Kiryu ( Mecha-G ) is pretty cool looking , but I liked the 90 ' s version more . Godzilla's appearance has regressed . . . I think the director was over-compensating for the lack of pupils in . . . All Out Monsters Attack ( which is a MUCH better movie ) . What G needs is a battle against Gigan . Someone . . . please bring Gigan or Megalon back . . . . pleassse . I really wish Godzilla had an answer to any of the Gamera-trilogy movies . Maybe Final Wars will be a step-up .
    • 074 4  After being very disappointed with GMK , I was excited to hear that Godzilla X Mechagodzilla was supposed to be very different from GMK , much darker , and using the familiar Godzilla suit . I think I'm starting to understand that Japan loves bad CG . That's the only explanation I can think of . So many shots look like they were composited using Photoshop . The battles are boring . The acting is surprisingly the only thing worth talking about . The DVD has no Godzilla-related extras . Only trailers for other strange badly CG'd Japanese movies . Unless you like bad japanese-style CG , you should avoid this Godzilla title and stick with stuff from the 90 ' s . Hopefully the new flick Final Wars won't look like crap .
    • 077 4  This review is from : Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ( DVD ) Godzilla sure look cool and mean and the special effects are much better than previous versions . I really wanted to enjoy this film , but the english dubbing is the worst ive heard in all Godzilla movies that ive watched . It sure did not match the emotions from the screen . . but we know that , but what takes the cake , it the little girl's voice seems to be from a adult imitating a little girl . The results are so unimpressive that i had to foward the movie to get past her . How can someone created such good movies and dont care about the quality about the dubbing that can change the outlook of a movie . This has been going on for a long time . Too bad studios that release movies dont care about the dubbing of their treasures once they go international . If i made a movie , i would make sure to oversee all dubbing applications and their results to make sure my film would retain quality in international markets . . . .

    • 080 4  After the rather superb GMK , this film is quite a step backwards , and proves to be the most dissapointing entry in the Millennium Series . The plot is pretty much the same as Godzilla Vs MechaGodzilla 93 , with mankind using cutting edge technology ( in this case , the bones of the original Godzilla ) to create a giant robot duplicate of the King of the Monsters . This film fails to create the spectacle of the previous MechaGodzilla film though . While the new MechaGodzilla ( Kiryu ) , is very well designed , it lacks the sheer menace of the 78 original , or the overwelming , almost unbeatable odds that the 93 version presented . In what could have been a great plot twist , and made for a unpredictable and very non formulaic G film , Kiryu goes beserk after its first encounter with Godzilla . Godzilla's roar unleashes the primal fury of the G essence that makes up Kiryu , causing it to attack the city . However , this problem is quickly solved and never again becomes a factor , leading to a by the numbers last half , which is quite the missed opportunity . The effects in this film are dissapointing as well , more so after viewing the impressive and inventive sequences that GMK offered . Many extremly fake looking computer graphic shots are unwisely used , such as some flying Kiryu shots and a battle tactic in which Godzilla is swung by his tail . Also , in many puzzling sequences , it appears as if the Godzilla suit is empty , the creature not even slightly moving as it is bombarded by the military or Kiryu . On the plus side , there are a few standout scenes ( Godzilla's opening attack during a typhoon and Kiryu's use of the icy Absolute Zero Cannon ) and an overall decent soundtrack . . . although it should be said that the new Godzilla Theme is a masterpiece . While I personally found this film to be a massive dissapointment , I cannot give the statement do not watch this movie or something along those lines . As all diehard G fans know , a new Godzilla film is always worth checking out .
    • 081 4  After viewing GMK ( Godzilla , Mothra , and King Ghidorah : All out Monsters Attack ) , I thought there was no where to go but up for the Godzilla series . . . . . Boy was I wrong . Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla went right back to the same formula as other Godzilla movies . . . . poor story , poor special effects , and overall uninteresting . It blows me away how a movie like GMK can do so many things never seen before in a Godzilla movie ( like awesome special effects , unique camera shots , a unique story that really moved ) , and then this one to be such a disappointment . . . . nothing I haven't seen before . This is the first in a trilogy featuring MechaGodzilla . . . . . let's hope the next two are better . If you are a Godzilla fan , you must own it , but don't rush out to get it . If you're not a Godzilla fan . . . . purchase GMK , in my opinion , the ultimate Godzilla movie .
    • 082 4  Mechagodzilla is made from the first Godzilla ` s bones-okay there ` s already a problem . That problem is that Mechagodzilla is like 200 feet tall and the first Godzilla was only 150 ! Also this movie is BOORRINGG ! Godzilla barely appears until the last 20 minutes ! ! ! At least the good special effects ( GMK ` s were still a heck of alot better ! ) and the final battle are good , but that still doesn ` t make up for the crappy rest of the movie !
    • 085 4  It could have done better without the father making an idiot of himself , the kid getting all over sensitive , and a much better looking of the 1954 Godzilla corpse . They must've used a doll for the Godzilla dying in Tokyo Bay scene but that was just ridiculous . And when Mechagodzilla goes crazy after hearing Godzilla's roar , that's just plain dumb . I've come to expect incredible movies from Toho Co . but this could've done better . Lose the kid , the crazy robot scene , and use the real footage from Godzilla's first death in Tokyo Bay .
