First Love

  • 008 4  I have been a HIKKI fan since her debut some years back , and though i've had this album for quite a while now , It bugs me that people have still not caught on to one of the greatest artist in the WORLD ! ! ! HIKKI stands as being the Queen of J-pop and never falls short from that title . Her vocal skills , and her abilities as a writer ( penning ALL of her tracks ) , are glowing testament to this artist's musical genius . From her first album CUBIC U to her latest , DISTANCE , HIKKI's music stands above the rest . If you love music , and just happen to finally figure out that american is not the best type out there , give HIKKI a chance . I doubt you will regret it .
    • 017 4  IF YOU WANNA PURCHASE THIS CD , OR ANY ASIAN IMPORT CD AND DON'T WANNA SPEND A FORTUNE ON IT , THEN GO TO SENSASIAN.COM . THIS IS AN ASIAN ONLINE MUSIC STORE . I GOT MY FIRST LOVE CD FOR ONE-THIRD OF THE PRICE OF THE IMPORT ONE HERE , AND THAT'S INCLUDING SHIPPING AND HANDLING !
    • 062 4  I was so surprised by her great talent . She wrote all her songs , and sang really well . I can't believe she's just a little girl ! I hope she'll soon be a WORLD STAR ! She deserves it !
    • 073 4  Her album First Love is one of a kind ! ! ! ! She has unbelievable talent and she has many many opportunity to come ! ! She is one of my favourite Japanese female singers ! ! My others are ELT , Suzuki Ami . . . . . I would know because I am Japanese ! ! ^ _ ^ DON'T FORGET TO GET THIS ALBUM AND SUPPORT UTADA HIKARU ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

  • 018 4  First Love is the debut album by Utada Hikaru . She only made it when she was 16 and it went on to sell over 10 million copies . 7 million being in Japan alone , the album has its ups and downs . Mainly ups , I'll be reviewing each song separately . Automatic - Album Edit starts off the album and it starts off perfectly . From the sounds of the turntables to the tambourine you'll be hooked . Utada's English phrases in the slew of Japanese fit perfectly well together . Automatic might last a bit long but you probably won't notice since it's really catchy . Movin ' on Without You is the next song on the list . I like the beginning where Utada sings Nothing's gonna stop me , only you can stop me but after that I get quite bored since Utada sings low and then gets high again . The song just doesn't catch my attention . In My Room is the next song , it starts with a very heavy urban sound and a voice of a male singing Yeah , Yeah , Come on then Utada sings . The song is a bit boring at first but then picks up and then you get hooked . The song finishes off with Utada singing with an echo sound . First Love is one of Utada's signature songs . It's a heavy ballad song with some R & B thrown in . Utada's English phrases once again pop out to the listener . The song is very popular ; it was so popular Utada actually made it a re-cut single . First Love is a song you should not miss . Amai Wana ~ Paint it Black is a very unique and complex song . You'd be surprised to know a 16 year old Utada arranged this song . The song has a very kick arse beat that everyone can enjoy . The song has some very catchy lyrics and even borrows the line I see a red door and I wanna paint it black from the famous song by the Rolling Stones . time will tell is a urban piano song . It starts with a piano interlude and then Utada starts singing . Near the end the song mainly just ends with Utada singing Time will tell . Nothing really special here . Never Let Go is the next song and it starts with a guitar and then goes into more R & B . The song itself isn't memorable . It's mainly a track that just might play in the background or something . B & C - Album Edit - is the next song and it's one of her bests . The song starts unexpectedly and it's really catchy . Utada hits her high notes perfectly and the English blends really well with her Japanese . Another great song by Utada . Another Chance , just like Never Let Go is not that memorable . I can't really remember this song , even if I listen to it over and over . I just can't get into it . Interlude is actually one of my favorite interludes , although it's a bit short . The melody is from another song that appeared on Utada's next album Distance . Give Me A Reason is a slow , ballad song that has some R & B in it . The song is nice , but it's 6 minutes long . Way to long for me to listen to . Automatic - Johnny Vicious Remix - is a bonus track , it's a hot dance tune of Automatic . It's a nice way to end the album since the remix is quite nice . First Love is an ok album from my point of view . It has it's ups and downs . Overall , an ok album . I suggest that you get the album if you love R & B or if you need more Utada to listen to .
    • 001 4  So your intuition has taken you this far ; let me win you over . You're probably debating whether or not you should risk it and fork out the extra $ s , right ? What's the fuss about ! Well believe the hype ! I ordered this CD after reading the rave reviews on this site , blinded by the fact that it's sold 8 million in Japan . Utada is a truly shining talent and her voice is sweet and strong . The song titles are in English but beware the songs are all sung in Japanese . Don't let that put you off , though , because Japanese has never sounded so good . The music is infectious and it won't take a second spin before you're hooked . The style is urban soul / pop - very Janet Jackson with simple production , more upbeat than Brandy and Monica , more mature than Billie or Britney . Utada covers all bases from pop soul on the opening Automatic to club house on the second single Movin On Without You , to sweet ballads like the title track and then funky beats on the closing Give Me The Reason . The Johnny Vicious revamp of Automatic is an added bonus to dance freaks like myself ! If the girl sung in English , she'd storm past Britney and Christina to total world domination . I , for one , hope that happens because the talent deserves to shine wide . This is a NO RISK DISC ! What are you waiting for ? BUY BUY BUY ! If you like this , then check out other hidden gems like Everybody's Somebody by Kele Le Roc ( UK ) , Privacy by Ophelie Winter ( France ) and My Truth by Robyn ( Sweden ) but beware that Utada's music is far superior .
    • 002 4  I llooovvee hiikkii ! ! ! ! Hikki wa daisuki desu ne ! This girl honestly rocks my world . I came to this point where it was like my ears were begging for something new . Something to test my senses . Something to challenge the mainstream crap that overflows my radio airwaves . I've studied Jap for ages , and thought I may aswell d / l a bit of Jap music , and see if I like it . Now my computer is filled with jpop , my CD shelves stacked with the stuff and others ears bursting with me singing all the time . . hehe . And it all started with downloading Utada . . . The first song I d / l was from this album , ' paint it black ' , and I love it , and it still is probably at the top of my list . The best song , catchy , upbeat , quick , and the lyrics . . it's about being caught in a ' amai wana ' - a sweet trap . A love trap . Something that you just dont wanna get caught in ! It's cool ! And ' First Love ' . The song that started it all . It's beautiful , melodic , full of love , passion and meaning . All about the one who was her first . this song , even if you can't understand japanese , can be easily understood by the passion behing hikki's voice . It's simply beautiful . ' Automatic ' . You know that really cool feeling you get when you're head over heels for someone . . . when when you see them , everything seems ok , when your heart just can't stop running , when you just can't help to look into their eyes ? ? ! ! It's automatic . It's a funky song , with a cool record repeat scratch thang getting it on down , a cool bass line , hikki's amazing voice , and just what it's getting across . It has a good peak happening in all the choruses compared to the versus aswell . Other damn good songs . . ' Time limit ' is really really cool . Hikki has the DarkChild rapper thang happening at the beginning aswell . If ou have bass in your car . . there's someunderlying hidden stuff on here that can really move the car . But it's heaps good . ' In my Room ' . . a real groover kinda song . ' Another Chance ' . . soo catchy ! really good vocals . This girl has it going on . . and it's amazing Im writing this like about 2 years after it's original release date . . but the thing is , it just is the type of CD that will not seem to deteriorate with time . It seems the type somehow . . the gal's done something . . to keep it in and funking . All the songs are good ! I could break them down to pieces and analyse them for you . . . but we listen to it all together ! Im impressed . . no . . Im blown away by the fact that this is just so damn wonderfully composed . Hikki's vocals , smooth melodies , excellent produced music , and the overall feel and meaning behind her voice . You really dont need to understand Jap to really know the feeling behind her words . I think it's now my favourite album . Why ? ! Because it's different to everything else that is always plyed on the radio . It's really funky . It sounds good on the ears . And even the fact that this is being written 2 years after it's release shows it's timelessness . Buy it . If you're feeling like you need a change , or are feeling a lil risky and wanna try something new . . this is for you ! Plus not only thast . . . the CD just damn well rocks ! get it ! ! and you'll damn well enjoy it ! Kakkoii ne !
    • 003 4  I had , until my sister ( who lives in Japan ) gave me Utada's CD for X-mas . For those of you who claim you ' just like the music , and don't pay attention to the words ' this is the CD for you ! Nothing was lost for me with most of the lyrics in Japanese , and the grooves caught me at once . With her influences stemming from east-coast to the Rolling Stones , this artist , if given proper exposure , could give the American divas a run for their money . The disc contains many styles Americans are used to-rock , pop , hip-hop , dance , ballad , etc . . . , but with a fresh new twist . Her track Movin ' On Without You could be played at any dance club in this country and fit seamlessly in with today's dance tracks . I went out and bought a new flash memory card for my Lyra player just to keep a copy of ' First Love ' on because it seemed to be the one disc I returned to over and over to grab music from . It is one of the few cd's that I can listen to from start to finish without skipping over tracks . Only 2 problems ' tho . . . 1 ) Not enough remixes available and . . . 2 ) If you get a song stuck in your head and ( like me ) have to ' sing ' it in your head to get rid of it . . . . good luck ! ( unless you know Japanese ! ) Encore , Utada , encore !
    • 005 4  Though I'm American I've lived in Japan since 1998 . One thing that pervades even the most steeped traditions is their absolute love of music . Right now , Japan is deep into what we Americans experienced in the late 80s / early 90s with boy-band and girl-band sensations in the dime-a-dozen quantity , and measured more on looks than on talent . Some that come to mind in Japan : Morning Musume , w-inds , Tonpopo , kinki kids . . . anyway the list is gigantic . I say that to say this . There are very few female solo artists in Japan pop culture that have true singing ability . Sitting at the pinnacle of those is Utada Hikaru . Between her semesters at Columbia University ( she speaks near-fluent English and went to high school in New York ) , she finds the time to record and promote some of the best , most meaningful music that is on air today . All of her fame began with this album , First Love . It is one of those relatively light albums that becomes an automatic in the changer before you go on a drive . This album is mostly known in Japan for the moving , emotional title track First Love . I am a Japanese speaker and even now I am still moved when I hear this . But even if you do not understand Japanese , you will definately agree that this album defines a standard by which other artists are measured .
    • 006 4  WOW ! My friend from Japan sent me this CD for my birthday and it is incredible ! It is definatly worth the cost ! When I go to Japan I am planning to buy 3 other CD's of Hikaru Utada ! She is an amazing artist and this is an incredible CD ! I would suggest it to any music fan . All of the tracks are in Japanese but the voices just turn into another instrument . This is great ! I especially love the last track , Automatic Remix ! Hikaru is amazing ! Dai dai dai stuki desu !
    • 009 4  Ok I know that most people have never heard of Utada Hikaru unless you are into Jpop or been to Asia so heres a small background . She has officially released 3 albums to date ( 4 / 8 / 01 ) 2 in Japanese and 1 in English this is not counting her coordination albums ( U3 , etc . . ) . This album simply blew me away when I first heard it . The lyrics , beat , and mixing flowed together flawlessy on nearly every track ( this is probably because she wrote and composed all of her tracks ) . First Love is clearly the standout on this album and really tugs at you whenever you listen to it . If the price is intimidating than you can look for the OS ( Overseas ) version to purchase which usually costs about half + of the japanese version . This is a GREAT album for ALL music fans of any nationality that love pop / R B .
    • 010 4  This was the first Japanese pop music album I bought during my year in Japan last year . . . and it has been the soundtrack to some of my best moments there . If it wasn't for Hikaru , the Japanese music scene probably wouldn't look the way it does now , with artists moving to replicate her R B sounds and success . You can dance to her music ! And the music is great ! It makes sense ! You'll know what I mean if you've listened to JPOP before . My favorite tracks from this album are Automatic , a pop classic in Japan by now , Movin ' On Without You and Time Will Tell . The title track is a bit weak , probably because it's a ballad . Hikaru's voice is a bit thin , but I think with time and development , her music will grow and mature . This would be a great addition to your JPOP collection .
    • 011 4  If you're the slightest bit apprehensive about buying a CD from a Japanese artist ( and lets face it , the price DOES reflect that it's an import ) , then I say take the risk , you'll love it ! The first time I hard First Love , I cried , its SO beautiful , and even my friends who don't know Japanese agree that Hikaru has a beautiful voice and her songs cover a wide range of styles and emotions . I was totally surprised to learn how young she is - - and I am usually totally against teeny-bopper bands and singers like Britney Spears . . . but Hikaru Utada has REAL talent , her young age only makes it more phenomenal ! ^ _ ^
    • 012 4  This Cd has you moving the whole time . I love it . . . not like other CD where you might have to skip songs . Even if you don't speak Japanese you'll still love this CD . Trust me !
    • 013 4  All hail Japan's Queen of Pop ! The writing on this debut CD is terrific . To paraphrase one journalist , this album set the Japanese music community on its ear and has irreversibly changed it . As most of you know , Hikki was born in New York City to Japanese parents who are both in the industry and grew up jetting between Japan and the States . This CD has R & B , soul and even some rap influences . I'm a hardcore rocker but I love good music no matter what category someone may put it in . Great production . Great songs .
    • 015 4  Utada Hikaru , or Hikki , is a truly unique artist with strong vocals at such a young age . She was 16 when she debuted , but her vocals are so mature and beautiful it will blow you away . There are many things that set her apart from other JPop artists . For one , she is an American , born in Manhattan and fluent in English . However , she went to high school in Japan , and spent summers there as a child . Therefore she has very good Japanese speaking abilities , although the Japanese press butchered her for her use of informal American Japanese . Therefore she has been embraced by both American and Japanese cultures , and this shows . Her music is R B , and her inspiration into the genre was the late Aaliyah , and while having an R B base , it also has a Hikki flair . It's not quite J-R B , and it's not Amer-R B . With this album she created a whole different genre , that can only be known as Utada Hikaru . This album sold over nine million copies in Japan because she brought something new to the JMusic scene . This album is a must in any JPop lovers or even r b lovers ' collection . Remember : Music is truly a universal language , an understanding of words is not needed to recognize truly beautiful music . Recommended Songs : Automatic , First Love , In My Room , others
    • 016 4  I shelled out 40 bucks for this CD , and it's well well worth it ! This CD is always in my car , and I can listen to it over and over again . Her voice is great ! The mixture of R B and Dance songs is great ! It's amazing that she wrote all her songs too ! You have to check out her videos and her new single , ADDICTED , if you can !
    • 019 4  This review is from : First Love ( Audio CD ) Hikaru's First Love album is still one of her greatest . The song First Love alone makes this album a great purchase . If you are new to Hikaru Utada's music ( e.g . you found out about her from Kingdom Hearts ) than you should know that this album has a deferent feel / sound from her newer songs . If you truly love Hikaru's music , than this album is a must-have .

    • 021 4  Originally bought this CD while I lived in Japan , lost it in a house fire . After looking everywhere , I finally found it here , so I ordered it . It reminds me of my time in Japan and I love to listen to it .
    • 022 4  I never listened to Japanise music outside of what was in Anime's . After getting Disney's Kingdom Hearts for the PS2 and hearing her song Simple and Clean I decided to check out some of her other work . Yes it is in Japanise , but it's still a great album , and hey it gives you a reason to learn the launguage = )
    • 024 4  I am very impressed by this CD ! Most of the songs are mellow and jazzy , complimented by a catchy beat . . . Her voice is beautiful , delicate and tender . Being not Japanese , I found that it doesn't really matter that the songs are not in English . In My Room is my favorite . The catchiest ones are Automatic and First Love .
    • 025 4  This CD is the best ! It is not a waste of your money at all . Her songs are upbeat and fun , and I love the mix of Japanese and English . She definately beats out any of those teenybopper girl and boy bands . You have GOT to get this album .
    • 026 4  All right , Hikaru fs gFirst Love h stole my heart from the first track . Hikaru did what great legendary singers are supposed to do : take control of perfect pitch and rhythm , illustrate emotional course with delicate touch . Needless to say ebout her free jazzy-improvisation throughout this album , in particular , of the title tune ( the most sensual torch ballad ever done by teens ) and uplifting gTime Will Tell h . But more , in fact she can really sing . At upbeat tunes , such as funky old school-ish gAmai-Wana ( Sweet trap ? ) h , her pitch never fails with acrobatic skills . Inspired by Sting fs gShape of My Heart h , she sensitively transformed his guitar solo routine with her marvelous vox into unforgettable slow groove on gNever Let Go h , whose interpretation is even more successful than gTake Him Back h by Monica ! ( Sorry , I love ya , too . ) Her greatest gift so far is her creativity and even husky alto ! Here she fully exploits her voice range on the closing tune , gGive Me a Reason h . Very passionate , still with Japanese delicacy . Gonna try her gCubic U h materials , including a fresh cover version of the Carpenter fs gClose to You h , too . Oh , Hikki , more ballads and English translation of the lyrics on your coming next album , please !
    • 027 4  i had heard the song first love from a friend , and i decided to order the cd . . . i have listened to it over and over again , i love this cd so much , now if i can only figure out what she is saying . ; x
    • 028 4  This CD has one of the greatest female vocals I've ever heard ( and believe me , I've heard lots of . . ) . The music is great . Its a pop music , and many people don't expect much from pop music , but the depth and recording quality of this CD is just jaw-dropping - the sound is very clear and well worth 40 bucks ! Songs are amost 100% in Japanese language , but have some English words in them , so everyone can sing along with Udata ( at least these few English words : ) - and this adds to entertainment listening this album ! In closing , I just want to say - no matter what music preferences you have , you won't want to miss this album . And only its high price can stop you ( but who cares about money , when it comes to perfect music ? )
    • 029 4  Utada Hikaru , famous in Japan , has definitely brought something that I would say is new to any American listening to the music . Perhaps , yes , it is influenced by some other forms of music and artists in those genres , but there's nothing else like the vibrance , the life , and the simple beauty of Japanese Pop music . In any language , this music is great . This CD is a must buy !
    • 030 4  This is the most abused and worn-out CD I ever had . It's been five years since I've had it but I still can sing all the songs by heart . Everybody will agree with me that First Love song is one of the favorites add to it Automatic and Moving on without you . I've improved my Kanji reading skills too by singiing along . Got so hooked with Hikki's voice that even back in States I would ask my friends in Tokyo if she has new CD . Well what do you know , two more LP CDs came out plus the countless singles since this was released .
    • 031 4  Hikki's debut album ' First Love ' is a twist with pop and r b . Even though I don't understand Japanese , Hikki has a soft voice and sings very well . Most of these songs are great to listen to , in your car , in the shower , even anywhere ! I recommend buying this CD for your Hikki needs ! ^ ^
    • 034 4  Hikaru has got to be one of the best singers I know . I don't normally listen to Jpop , but after listening to this c.d . I've learned to really like it ! All her songs are great to listen to . It doesn't really matter if you don't understand the lyrics to the songs because the melody is fantastic ! . . . Anyway , it doesn't really matter whether you're Japanese or not because this c.d . is great one for everyone to listen to !
    • 035 4  This review is from : First Love ( Audio CD ) Hikki-chan's best album . It is a shame that most Americans have never heard , and likely never will hear , this massively talented Japanese-American . As for this album . . . well , 7.65M Japanese folks bought it . . . enough said ? What a gift for J-Pop . Don't look now , but she is also an excellent jazz vocalist . Sings and composes , coupled with a sweet spirit . Trust me . . . just buy this album . I cannot recommend it highly enough . EDIT : FYI , I notice a lot of folks refer to Hikki-chan as Japanese , which is understandable . . . but . Hikki-chan is a US Citizen , born in New York City , which accounts for her completely native fluency in both English and Japanese . Hikki-chan did have both Japanese and US passports and dual citizenship until her 23rd B'Day . Japanese law requires that dual citizens declare single citizenship on or before their 23rd B'Day and Hikki chose US Citizenship . She spent about half of her time in Japan and the other half in the US . . . and a considerable amount of time on planes between the two . She is a truly remarkable talent . . . who is also very approachable in person . Trivia : Did you know that Hiiki-chan's goal in life is to open and run a bookstore ? Yup , after music , I am sure she will do just that . Too bad all of her US offerings to date have bombed beyond belief . . . Kwon BoA suffered the same fate . Hard to believe , but the only Japanese language record ever to chart in the Top - 100 was the 1964 release of Sukiyaki , by Sakamoto Kyu .

    • 037 4  This review is from : First Love ( Audio CD ) I enjoyed this one and there is only one song on there that i didnt like . Other than that First Love is up in there in play book . I love how Hikki mixes English and Japanese without any effort at all . Its an excellent cd for anyone that's a fan of hers or even if not . You will enjoy this cd . . . its not even about the language its about the music and it rises above any kind of barrier out there . Love . . . first ! !

    • 039 4  This review is from : First Love ( Audio CD ) This is my first experience with the world of J-Pop , so I don't have anything to compare to except to Western Pop . That being said , I enjoyed the album very much . There's something about Hikaru's voice that transcends both language and culture .

    • 041 4  Whether you're into American music , Japanese music , it doesn't really matter . This album is an excellent album for anyone interested in music period . Utada Hikaru wrote all of the songs on this album , apart from Amai Wana ~ Paint it Black ~ and was only 15 when she recorded this . This album is especially precious to those interested in R & B . In fact , in one of her songs , Hikki ( a fan name ) used the background from Monica's ( it's really Sting's song , Shape of My Heart ) Take Him Back . The beginning of this album starts out with an R & B beat , Automatic . Although most lyrics will only be able to pick up a few words , it's automatic , I feel so good , etc . it is definitely worth the experience . There is a bit of guitar in the background ( electric , it peps up the beat a bit ) and makes this song even more energetic . Automatic was Hikki's first single and it sold nearly 50,000 copies in its first week and over 2,000,000 in total . Movin ' On Without You was another upbeat song . The hook , Nothing's gonna stop me , only you can stop me is quite catchy . The background is quite nice but , although this was a high selling single , it never caught on too much for me . However , it's a great song and I do give it a listen fairly often . If you ask , no one can say they don't like the background of In My Room . It caught me immediately , and I never can skip this track . The lyrics , even though it's impossible to pick up any more than in my room every now and then , are quite touching . I love them entirely , stop by an anime lyrics site if you get the chance and check them out . Once you get a good listen to this track , it's impossible to skip it . First Love may not catch you at the beginning , but the chorus will . You are always gonna be my love the beat behind that and the voice was beautiful . It can seem like an easy skip because it's so slow but it's a choice you'll soon regret . Again , the lyrics are quite touching . English chorus : You are always gonna be my love . Even if I fall in love with someone once again . I'll remember to love . You taught me how . You are always gonna be the one . It's still a sad song . Until I sing a new song . The background turns into excellence on the chorus and after it . I have yet to find the English lyrics for Amai Wana . The end is quite catchy . I see a red door and I wanna paint it black . The background is upbeat and quite a refreshing difference from the slow tempo of First Love . Time Will Tell may seem like a repeat of First Love at the beginning . But just take a listen . It turns into beauty around 0 : 15 . Again , I haven't found the English lyrics . The entire melody and song sounds so pretty and happy . Again , it's quite different from First Love . ( Why do I keep comparing the tracks to that song in particular , I don't know . ) I love the chorus . This track quickly became one of my favorites . This was released as a single with Automatic . You'll quickly fall in love with this song . Never Let Go . This is another pretty song . I knew I recognized the beat from somewhere , and many of you are bound to know it . As I said earlier , it's from a Sting said that Brandy re used in Take Him Back . The background vocal is nice I'll never let go . The main vocals are just as good and they have touching lyrics . Run through the sand with the one you love , and never let go . . . ( Oh , BTW , that's not a direct quote this time . . . ) B & C is another happy beat . I don't like it as much as I like Time Will Tell but it's nice to listen to all the same . It's lovely . But , to be honest , there's not much for me to say here . Another Chance is another one of those songs I listen to on occasion . Similarly to In My Room , the background is great . It's a bit more funky , though but excellent all the same . The interlude is pretty , but there's not much to say about it , it's only 17 seconds long . . . Give Me a Reason is pretty but it doesn't catch me again . I like it and I like the backgrounds as well . Automatic ( Johnny Vicious Remix ) is lovely to listen to when you want the vocals of Automatic but you want it to get upbeat or you want to dance to it . I wouldn't recommend listening to it before you listen to the real Automatic of course because the real Automatic is about a hundred times better . This track isn't bad , but it's just a remix . It's great and all , but , well , the original's better . ^ _ ^ All in all , I give this album two thumbs up , five stars , 10 outta 10 , whatever phrase you want to use . Utada Hikaru has done a GREAT , FANTASTIC , AWESOME , EXCELLENT , etc . job with her debut album . Be sure to buy Distance and Deep River , and Ultra Blue her second , third , and fourth albums . Additional Notes : * The First Love album was at #1 on the Japanese charts for 4 weeks . * The First Love album has also landed itself on #1 at the best selling Japanese albums in history since 1999 Source : Wikipedia
    • 042 4  She popped into Japanese Music scene like a shooting star in March 1999 . She was only 16 years old at that time ; however , she composed all her songs at such a young age . Not only that but also her voice is really awesome ! She is very talented ! She is bilingual so that her lyrics are the mixture of English and Japanese . Her speaking another lunguage other than the native one influenced me very much , and here I am now to study English ( I'm Japanese ) . Even if you do not understand the lyrics , you'll love this album . My recommendations : Automatic , In My Room , First Love , Give Me A Reason .
    • 043 4  Considering Hikki wrote the majority of the songs from scratch , this isn't too bad of a CD . And that's where the talent lies . You can dig up chicks that can sing , but it's hard to find those who can sing and write their own songs . Most artists in this age are produced , including those like Mai Kuraki , Ayumi Hamasaki and the newer and leser known Mika Nakashima . Overall , Hikaru Utada , the current leader in JPop , is simply unparalleled in skill . . . At this time ; ) First Love was Hikki's first album released in 1999 and was the best selling album of that year . Hikki's skill at the young age of 16 is simply incredible and well honed . Her music is well balanced , but how ' good ' music is an opinion . Overall , I enjoyed this CD and I envy how someone the same age as I can make millions of dollars . . .
    • 046 4  Excellent album . Hikaru is both a talented singer songwriter . This girl will make it , believe me or she has already . Buy First Love . Buy all her albums .
    • 050 4  I bought this CD last summer while spending some time in Shibuya and I have to admit that for as bad as J-Pop can get , Utada Hikaru's CD is very good . While most Japanese artist hang-out around the edges of R B , Utada jumps right in ! The Japanese language even lends itself very well to Soul music . Automatic is the stand-out track on this CD , but all of the tunes are full of spunk . Another very good Japanese R B artist is Suzuki Masayuki . . . . this brotha can really sing . Check them both out and enjoy !
    • 053 4  I love Hikki-san's singing ! She has a lot or R B on her records , but it sound great with her voice ! My favorite songs by Hikki-san would have to be Never Let Go , Automatic , and Addicted to You ! She did a wonderful job of singing all of these ! If only J-Pop was really popular in the United States
    • 054 4  A question that some people who like this CD to a considerable amount would ask themselves . This is one of the best CD's I have ever heard . Every song , pretty much , has an upbeat tune to it , so it'll make you dance . The best songs on First Love is Give me a Reason Time will tell , in my opinion . ( indeed , people may disagree ) So , give this CD a try , you'll probably like the outcome .
    • 055 4  well , i dont know her . . but i have the CD . im japanese also . and she is such a hit in Japan . Her parents oare musicians and she was born in New York . And she also wrote all the songs by herself ! ( just like mariah carey ) . i mean think of it , she is a teen writting these songs and sold 8 million copies . i think selling 8 million copies just says it all : dis here CD is good !
    • 056 4  This is one of the best Japanese pop albums I've heard . The songs have a funky urban sound something to be bumpin ' to when driving around town . Hikaru Utada is very talented and has a soulful voice . Hope she puts out more great Japanese albums .
    • 057 4  Utada Hiraku is talented , although most of her songs on this CD are obviously in Japanese . However , she carries a beautiful voice . First Love is probably one of the greatest songs out there . Although , most of the song is in Japanese , a slight part of the chorus is in English ( maybe one line or two lines ) . Regardless of the fact that people who are not Japanese may not be able to comprehend her words , she still expresses herself very beautifully and calmly through her muzik . She isn't a fob either because she was born in New York , so she carries no accent . This is one of those CDs that won't make you feel ripped by giving you only one or two good songs like Automatic and Movin on without you . Although , I'm not a very big fan of Jpop or pop music in general or asian music , I really like her songs for some reason .
    • 061 4  When I listened this CD , I was so excited that I didnt have ever listend such a emotional singer in japan and were very moved . If you are interested in japan music you should listen these nice brilliant emotional songs . She is genious !
    • 063 4  this album is the best ! I got to listen to some of the songs on a Japanese soap opera and immediately , i fell in love . My boyfriend's brother had it so i listened to the whole CD and then my boyfriend bought it for me . . . I listen to it all the time !
    • 065 4  I am definitely impressed with this girl's music . She sounds better than some of the American R B artists . For someone who's only 16 , she's very impressive . If you buy this CD , you won't be disappointed . Her best songs on the track are Automatic and First Love . The only thing that disappointed me was that I was hoping she would have had some more slow songs on the track , but the songs she wrote are still excellent . GO BUY IT ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
    • 068 4  Amazing , one of my favorite CD's . Just buy it and listen . You'll soon find yourself writing a fantastic review for it just like I did !
    • 070 4  i just picked up this CD on my trip to japan and it's so-ooooo good . hikki has the right mix of j-pop and r b , you can chill out and listen or dance to it = D
    • 072 4  Hikki is a music talent even she just a six-teen years old girl. She has her own style and no one can learn it.The more important is she has the special sound.I think she'll popular and go on .
    • 075 4  This CD is a must-have ! I went all the way to Singapore to purchase the Japanese packaged import for an ' Original ' Utada ( even friends in Tokyo can't get their hands on it ! ) Definitely more than the $ ' s worth . Verdict of the entire composition ? The title says it all ! She's a stratospheric classy songstress ! Great engineering , fantastic collaboration , ingenious sheer talent , infectious combination of songs + melisma = Siren Hikaru Utada !
    • 078 4  When Utada Hikaru , or Hikki-chan , was 8 years old , neither she or her father , who is also her manager , would realize her success . She released an album under U3 / Star at the age of 10 , which didn't get too much hype . The real hype came at the age of 15 when Toshiba-EMI released her single Automatic , and then the rocket finally launched off . This CD is a MUST for anyone's JPop or any collection , containing that hit first official single Automatic , 2nd single Movin On Without You , and latest single , the album title First Love . Other songs on this include the coupling songs ( Time Will Tell , B C ) and Give Me A Reason , In My Room , and more . $40US is a bit pricey even for an import JPop Album , but it is all worth it !
    • 081 4  When I first heard the CD it was amazing . I can't believe a japanese girl born in New York can take over all of Japan with her lovely singing . The tracks worth listening to are Automatic the remix by Johnny Viscous , Movin On Without You and of course her BIG hit Fisrt Love . Get the CD it is worth getting
    • 083 4  Does anybody know about Hikkie ? who is the singer of the CD . She is a Japanese girl but born in New York and actually she has started her first career in N.Y.when she was fifteen . She has strong clear voice and pep melody which make you very comfortable . I love her English and Japanese lyrics such as you are always gonna be my love , itsumo . . . . You MUST listen to this debut album ( in Japan ) that is the best seller ever in Japan . Hikkie who is going to the Columbia University next fall is going to be one of the most popular singers .
    • 084 4  Utada Hikaru's original album was released under Cubic U and for the most part , was sickining . Every track was about love , all but two or three talking about it negatively . I like love songs like are Sakura or Hikari / Simple & Clean . I also like her later love songs , but a few tracks on here are disspointing . This is mainly because I'm a pop , rock , and heavy metal fan . . . though I also like some classical Japanese mixed in ! The tracks that stand out to me : Paint it , Black Never Let Go Give Me A Reason Apprently Hikaru didn't know Bonny and Clyde were murders when she wrote B & C . . . Anyway , if you're R & B fan , Utada Hikaru fan , than you'll like this CD ! If you're a pop fan , check out Deep River and Distance .
    • 086 4  A friend gave me this CD years ago and I didn't pay much attention to it because I wasn't into Japanese stuff yet . Last year I found it , still unopened , in a box . I listened to it and was in heaven . I quickly bought Utada Hikaru's other CDs and haven't stopped listening to them since . Everyone should buy this album ! Also , Patrick , Hikki quit Columbia . Also , I'd say that she speaks more than near-fluent English .
    • 088 4  I have had this CD for a few years now and I still love it to this day . I remembering hearing the song In my Room for the first time in 1998 when my friend came back from japan . Ever since then i have really gotten into Jpop . My Fav Tracks are : - in my room - moving on with out you - B and C - Another chance . Definately a good introduction to Jpop .
    • 089 4  This is an awesome CD . I'm a student of Japanese and I have learned dozens of the Kanji Characters by following with the lyrics in the jacket . I know some people who love acid rock who also love Utada Hikaru even though she's an R & B / Pop singer .
    • 090 4  Although I am a fan of some of Hikaru's songs , I'm in awe of how she's become so popular with her attitude . From what I've read about her , she's a snob and she has let stardom go to her head . I don't know if I should support an artist like that . ^ _ ^ ; I think for now , I will stick with Mai . / Lately , Hikaru hasn't really released anything that I've liked . ( Final Distance was okay , but it sounded like she was trying too hard .
    • 091 4  The only reason I didn't give a full five stars was because of that annoying tendency for Japanese pop stars and their producers to splice their tunes with English words . Stick to one language at a time and it is a heck of a lot more enjoyable . Especially someone like Utada Hikaru . She has a fantastic voice and a maturity that is seldom heard in someone so young . I haven't heard her mother's ( Keiko Fuji ) stuff but I'm sure she played a part in the development of Hikaru's wonderful pipes . All that would be enough but then further examination reveals that she wrote all her own material , lyrics and music . That is usually unheard of in radio friendly Japanese pop . In reality , I believe this girl may have changed the face of J-Pop forever . Even the former greats , such as Amuro Namie or Tomomi Kahala , sound so lame now . BUY IT , it's worth the price .
    • 092 4  I borrowed the CD from a friend of mine after hearing about how much of a sensation she is in Japan . Well , after listening to First Love twice , all I can say is it's not all that bad . In fact , it's pretty decent . The only problem I have is that it's all been done before . If you've listened to either Brandy or Monica , then you'll know what this CD will sound like . Now don't get me wrong , she's a talented singer and songwriter . It's just that there's nothing original about her R B / pop-influenced style of music . To put it simply , there's really nothing to write home about !
    • 093 4  You've probably heard or read that you can get it even cheaper in other sites , the fact is that you can get it cheaper , but those CD's are not Japanese Originals . Those are from Hong Kong or Taiwan , the quality is worse , and everything is done with low quality materials . If you really are a fan of Hikki or would like to listen to real good quality then buy this one . All Cd's in amazon are Japanese , that's why they are expensive . Belive me , in the end they are better . And that is the only way you would help your artist to improve his or her sellings , because China , HOng Kong , etc . don't pay copyrights to anybody . Help the artists . Buy only originals ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
    • 094 4  After living in Japan for almost four years , I'd given up entirely on the J-Pop scene . It's basically New Kids on The Block , but much , much worse . Then along comes Utada Hikaru , who went to school in New York City and is the daughter of a famous Japanese enka singer . Her CD , First Love , clearly has a strong western influence , particularly in the production . I have to give this 16 - year-old a lot of credit for writing her own tunes . She also blends Japanese and English lyrics very smoothly in tunes like the title track . ( Most Japanese artists fail miserably in this endeavor . ) I enjoyed this CD a lot but fear Hikaru is already falling prey to the big money marketing sharks in Japan . I cringe now when I see her doing ads for Sony while lip-syncing to her latest single . Maybe a real artist emerging from the J-Pop scene was too much to be true .
    • 095 4  Before I start this review I must state that I am a huge Utada Hikaru fan . I love her deep voice and her variety of songs . But this album is by far her worst . The singles on it are pretty good - Automatic ( my favorite on the CD ) , Movin ' On Without You , and First Love . In My Room and Amai Wana are pretty cute but there's nothing special about them. The rest of the songs are either boring or dreadful ( Never Let Go ) Her voice still has a young quality to it which I really notice in time will tell . Fortunately , she greatly improved by Deep River and this is still not a bad CD .
    • 096 4  This album is the Utada's debut album . She was only 15 years old when this album went on the Japanese market . All the musics and lyrics in this album were written by Hikaru . In Japan , the sales of this First Love reached over 8 million copies ! It was really a social phenomenon in Japan . Hikaru is a pure japanese , but she is very fluent in English . Hikaru passed the entrance examination for Columbia University , but she gave up to go to Columbia because she was too busy .
    • 097 4  Utada Hikaru's music will get anyone into JPOP . 1 . Automatic - This song is really upbeat and catchy ! When I first heard it , I was immediately hooked ! Hikki's voice is so nice ! ! ! 2 . Moving On W / out You - This song is really cool and fast paced ! ! It reminds me of hip hop sometimes . It's cool how Hikki uses english in her songs sometimes . This song is pretty catchy too ! 3 . In My Room - This song is quite mellow and slow but has a good beat . Sort of trance like . I like the translation . This is a good song to listen to to go to sleep hehe . 4 . FIRST LOVE - omg ! ! ! this song is soo awesome . i recommend it to everyone . Everyone can relate to it . Well Hikki's voice in this is just so nice and yah . You can listen to it over and over again ! You will want to learn how 2 play it on piano ! ! You'll want a ringtone of it ! It's that good : D People who dont even like JPOP like this song . 6 . Time Will Tell - This is a pretty catchy song too , like most of hikki's songs . Its really light and cheery . Just a song to sing randomly when you're walking or something . hehe .
    • 098 4  This Cd was the first of Utada Hikarus that i've bought and i must say this is the best music i've listened to in a long time , i especially liked Automatic which is first track on the cd ! I highly recommend this for any Hikky Fan .
    • 099 4  I'm listening her album , but I regret that I bought her album for almost $ 40 . What's so special about this album ? There's nothing special in this album . There are many singers who can sing a song like that way in USA , Japan and even Korea .
    • 104 4  I have been listening to this CD like crazy lately . I'm not sure why but her music is very catchy and the lyrics are good . The song First Love is pretty sad . If you could understand what she is saying in Japanese you would understand why I say that . The cd is a must have for anyone . Her voice is just so soothing and Japanese is a very beautiful language for music .
    • 105 4  Horrible . To describe this cd in one word , I'd have to say horrible . This is what you get as an underlying result of the American music industry leaking into Japan's talents . I'll start off by simply saying Hikaru Utada can NOT sing . Her voice is low and lamby and unfortunatly not meant for the musical notes arranged in the BGm itself . For those who have seen her MTV you'd have discovered the girl can dance under the assumption that dancing is really just bopping up and down in front of a flamming yellow couch . Most of the hype for this single comes from that fact that her mother is an idol singer and her father is a musical producer . That and the well known motivation that Hikaru is a straight A student . I personally find her voice too lamby for my tastes . Unlike Mai Kuraki who actually has a glimpse of talent , this situation is hopeless . Aside from that , she has a bad attitude . Unless those who like her , really see her as a bad girl type , this is a double negative . In all my years of collecting music , albums and even old idol records from the 80 ' s , I can say without any hesitation this is the worst abomination of music I've ever seen . If you're looking for real R B try Eiko , Misia , Double , Color and even Mai Kuraki . Just anyone but her : she's an example of what Japanese music is NOT about .

  • 023 4  I am quite impressed by Utada Hikaru . I mean , really impressed . Her voice is very mature , soulful , and it fits the atmosphere of the songs she sings . Two of my favorite songs on this track are Automatic and First Love . Automatic is somewhat of a dance track , where she cleverly mixes Japanese and English together , and it weaves into an entertaining song . First Love was Utada's breakout hit . It is not hard to see why . While I prefer the dance remix of this song , the lyrics are a stand alone . One the first verse , she proclaims how our kiss tasted like cigarettes . Her vocals are excellent and I can't wait to hear more from her in the future .
    • 007 4  I first heard her song when my sister went back to Taiwan and got her single First Love . I love that song . That's my favorite song . My cousin came to visit me from Taiwan and bought me the cd . I fell in love with every song . She is amazing .
    • 032 4  Hikki's first album . Scored huge in Japan when it first came out . Her voice is unique . The fact that she is actually from the USA makes her English singing sublime . Love how she mixes Japanese and English very naturally . Great R & B . Highly recommend .
    • 033 4  The song First Love is the best love song I've ever heard ! ! ! I'm looking for the cd and this has got to be worth it ! I don't even know Japanese but her voice is so soothing . First Love made me remember my first crush and it made me so emotional ! Although I haven't heard the other songs yet , i'm sure we can trust Hikari's singing . If I don't get this cd , i will drop dead .
    • 049 4  This has got to be one of the best j-pop cd's ever . I never skip a track and I listen to it often . One thing that I love about Utada is that her English is superb in comparision to most Asian singers , besides Coco Lee . First Love and Give Me a Reason are standout tracks , but I'd recommend any of the other tracks at the blink of an eye . I am anxiously waiting for her next album which has the English track Fly Me to the Moon , which is very addicting . For those people who don't usually listen to j-pop , make this an exception !
    • 051 4  This is by far the best album I have ever bought . It's filled with such a variety of sounds , it's just unbelievable . And to think that she writes all the songs herself . Amazing . My favorite song on the album has to be Give me a reason . You can really tell how good her voice is on this track . Also , the Automatic remix is awesome . The interlude is kind of funky , but it's nice . All together an amazing album , kudos to Utada Hikaru . Hope she comes to the U.S.A . !
    • 074 4  It is just the best Album . . should buy it ! Especially . . . First Love . . . . . . it is so good . Buy it now !
    • 077 4  Utada's new album is unique in that this album displayed various style of singing , I love especially track 4 First Love , and all the songs in this ablum are solid , and some even have R B style to it , this album is definately worth buying . First Love is definately Utada's best work so far
    • 079 4  Aloha , im from Hawaii and ever since I heard her song First Love i fell in love with this young girl . she is the bomb ! ! I would do anything to meet her in person .
    • 080 4  Utada is the first jpop singer that i've really loved . I listen to her first love album just about everyday ! ! I would really like to hear her sing something completely in English that way I can understand , but even still she sounds terrific ! !

  • 045 4  Let's face it , by the time you've read this review , you've already either casually bypassed the Britney Spears / Christinia Agulera / N'Sync / etc . pages ( much like myself ) or somehow magically found this page on accident . Well , rest assured , that this is one album that you DO NOT WANT TO PASS UP ! Not only is Hikki capable of singing / writing multiple music styles , but she is absolutely amazing at it too . Get this peoples - she writes every song she sings ! Pricewise , you might be thinking right about now , Ummn . . . I don't mind giving new artists a shot , but the 30 - some-odd dollars kinda bothers me . Take the risk , it is well worth it !
    • 048 4  All I can say is that this girl has real talent . Upon first listening to this album , I kept thinking to myself if this girl released an English album in the states she would blow up . She totally surpasses Britney and Christina two-fold . Even though I'm not japanese the songs on this album are really catchy , you won't even notice that she is singing in japanese , you will just be addicted to the groove and her voice .
    • 101 4  i like this songs n ' I hope some one can sent me this song to my email address in ari15411 @ lovemail.com

  • 060 4  This is one the the best J-pop cd available now . The 12 tracks are great . As u first pop it in your cd player you start of with Automatic simply the best . After that u get Movin ' on with out u all these songs are writen by her and sung by her . You will never get tired of this cd . Buy this cd right now . The 37 bucks that u spend on this will not be wasted . Her style is one that i haven't heard in a while . Even though all the songs are in Japanese , there are few english lyrics spread out that will help you understand the song . 3 words , simply the best . What are u waiting for buy this now !
    • 004 4  WOW , just wow , i haven't been so obsessed with a cd since 4 years ago , and it just keeps getting better and better the more i hear it . If youre sick of the britneys and the christinas or would just like to something different , something foreign , japanese , then get this cd .
    • 052 4  I'm suprised how reviews are still popping up 2 years after the album was released . . . I was just checking on how jpop is doing in the states and the first search got me here . . . Well . . . first love is probably the song that most people like the best . . . cuz it remained in the top for months , played in radio stations and shops , and further boosted by a j-drama . Every song on this cd is good , but the one song I love the most is Movin ' On Without You . It is simply one of the few songs that move me the most . . . because I like fast and loud music that are also sentimental ( I actually bought the album because of this one song ) . Automatic is a bit slower , but it is nonetheless a great song . Also . . . her song titles are in english , and she does sing a few phrases of english throughout . . . however , do not mistake her for other foreign artists who like to spontaneously throw in an english words ( babe , love , etc ) . She has lived in america , and she is currently attending a prestigious college in new york . If you don't believe me , go listen to her version of Fly Me to the Moon on the Wait and See single ( which btw to me is on the same lv as Movin ' on w / o you ) . However much I wanted to apply to that university . . . I didn't . . . oh well : )
    • 058 4  Definietely a must buy . She's talented and have a sweet voice , good style . . . etc.I'm not listening any others Japanese singers but her , no wonder that she's so popular and this album have sold over 10 millions copies ! Her latest single Addicted to You also great !
    • 067 4  Unbelievable talent for a person of any age . . . her voice and songs are the best in the business ! ! really . . . if you dont believe me . . . believe the eight million copies sold already . . .
    • 082 4  does anybody know hikki ! well , i'm the biggest fan of her and nobody is a bigger fan than me ! HA HA ! she was born in1983 and her birthday is in January ! i know that much so u would notice right ?
    • 085 4  This is the one the debut album that went multi platinum in japan and it shows to . when you first hear this one you will definately be hooked on the hikki bandwagon . the first six tracks are my personal favorites and i would say the best on the cd as well . Automatic and First Love OMG these two songs are just fantastic well done . Time Will Tell and Movin On Without You just wonderful and also comes with bonus track of Automatic ( Johnny Vicious Remix ) . You have to pick this up you wont regret this album . check it out
    • 087 4  i love most the songs on this my favorite is time will tell ' but i also love first love automatic b & c in my room paint it black another chance yeah pretty much the whole album this album is great , i dont know if i would buy the cd anytime soon becuase i already have all the songs on my ipod and computer but i would eventually buy it for my collection
    • 102 4  Hikaru Utada cleverly and uses both English phrases and katakana words . . . Only a true bilingual songwriter can do this effectively . As mentioned by others , everything she did in this album has been done previously by American pop singers . Her songs , however , are easier for Japanese people who haven't been exposed to the American pops to get their hands on , compared to the songs by Misia . This album would be a good instruction to the Western music , but once you become familiar with various American songwriters , you will find that there are many others who write songs like Hikaru does .
    • 103 4  where do i begin , this cd is the best cd to come out of asia ever.These are the best songs : 1 . automatic 2 . movin on without you 3 . in my room 4 . first love 5 . paint it black ( amai wanna ) 6 . time will tell 7 . never let go 8 . b and c ( bonnie and clyde ) 9 . another chance 11 . give me a reason 12 . automatic ( johnny vicious remix )

  • 100 4  I bought this in NY NY which is the most expensive place i have ever been ex . $ . . . not includeing tax for a $ . . . total loaf of bread. But at the street fairs and in the shops with indian and pakestani people if you know how to bargon or are nice or show you are smart for your age or just show your smart you can get REALLY GOOD deals and FREE stuff . But any way in virgin records they were selling this item for about $ . . . - $ . . . all there j-pop that they where selling didnt seem to break $ . . . . . and it was full of luna sea hikaru utada and more but I sadly saw no namie or anaza or much anime music and no sera myus.but what i bought rocks . this albums great b / c's about bonnie and clyde . my fav . is a combo of two songs amai wai / wana paint it black very up beat an fast.there all great danceing songs .
    • 047 4  This CD is easily put as GREAT ! Most cds you buy today there are some good songs and the rest aren't your cup of tea . This cd every song is great ! Even if you dont speak japanese this album is great to dance to sing to cry to ! I would recommend it for all ages . It desirves every star ! No down side to this album once so ever !
