First Book of Sushi (World Snacks)

  • 015 4  My daughter received this book and 2 others ( Yum Yum Dim Sum , and Hola Jalapeno ) as a gift when she was born . In the last 3 years we have grabbed these books over and over again at bedtime , to go out for dinner , overnight trips . . . all the time ! She recognizes the pieces of sushi she just had for dinner and LOVES to read the book to herself ( from memory . . . of course ) . The illustrations are vivid and fun to look at and the rhyming words are like lyrics to her ( Someday I'll Eat With Chopsticks , But Today Just With My Hands ) ! She often asked for Miso In My Sippy Cup , Tofu In My Bowl ! Don't miss this one ! Makes a great gift for your little ones and thier friends ! ! ! !
    • 001 4  I bought this for my nephew for Christmas when he was eight months old . He is now 15 months old and has it read to him every night . He loves this book . He often grabs it from his book table . It's the perfect book for small children - short , colorful and rhymey . Just remember that the book actually ends on the back cover , which I thought was a little strange . My sister has memorized this book since she reads it every night and so have I . I plan on giving this book at baby showers .
    • 002 4  My kids got this book when they were about 6 months old . They loved the rhythm even then , and it's still one that they pick up and ask for now , at 18 months . I love it as a parent - I think the author is clever and talented ! It will make much more sense , both rhythmically and logically , if you remember to include the line on the back cover as the end of the book . On some of her other books , she includes either definitions of the food or pronunciation guides - this has neither , so I may be butchering the words , but no one seems to care .
    • 003 4  Like the book says , Someday I'll eat with chopsticks / But today just with my hands . Why should the preschool set be limited to hardened paper stock books with colors , shapes , letters , numbers and animal . Future Foodies need books like this . The graphics are bold and bright , and the rhymes are fun . With miso in my sippy cup / tofu in my bowl , this book on your cribs will make for tickled ribs .
    • 004 4  This is a wonderful book . Our 8 month old loves the pictures and rhymes . Wonderful way to expose our son to a type of food we love . We plan on taking the book with us on our next trip for sushi .
    • 005 4  This review is from : First Book of Sushi ( World Snacks ) ( Board book ) My daughter got this book a few days ago for her first birthday , and my husband and I already really love it ! My daughter really likes the bright colors and likes turning the pages . It really is a beautiful book .
    • 006 4  My daughter got this book a few days ago for her first birthday , and my husband and I already really love it ! My daughter really likes the bright colors and likes turning the pages . It really is a beautiful book .
    • 007 4  I bought this book for my daughter when she was not even a year old ( truth be told , I bought the book for myself ) . She is almost 3 this year and still loves her sushi book . Her favorite parts are the wasabi , hot , hot , hot and big , big , futomaki . Not only does she love the words and rhythm of the book but also she adores the illustrations ; every corner of every page is filled with something interesting for her to look at . This book also encouraged her to try some of my sushi , which she loved almost as much as the book . I would recommend this book to every parent and have often given it at baby showers .
    • 008 4  Better than your typical baby book . A subject and rhymes that parents will enjoy . Give it to your favorite sushi loving new parents , along with the sushi bib and burpcloth ( available from select online baby stores )
    • 010 4  This is a cute book . Wish it had included a pronunciation guide and even a vocab list . Great illustrations .
    • 011 4  This book is brilliantly illustrated , and lets face it there's enough generic baby-blah books to choose from . First book of sushi is highly unique . My family lives in hawaii , and we patronize many sushi restaraunts , and in that aspect its a great way to expose my daughter to other cultures , and expand her tastes beyond typical kid food boundaries . Get the book , you will enjoy it .
    • 012 4  Fabulous book , my son loves it and so do I ! I especially like how the last page is the back of the book ( was dissapointed when it wasn't repeated in the rest of the series ) . Anyway , very clever , whitty and fun to read - get them all !
    • 013 4  This is a great book for tykes . It's visually pleasing and the text is well thought out and catchy . . . . . .
    • 014 4  This is a fun twist on your typical children's book . Its got colorful pictures and whimsical rhymes , but the funniest part is the subject matter - - sushi : I'll take yellowtail hamachi / and a red maguro slice . / Big , BIG futomaki has so many grains of rice ! I'm sure my kids don't understand exactly what what's being talked about ( and sometimes I don't either ) . But there's a pleasant pace to the rhymes and the words are fun to say out loud ( tekka maki and kappa maki sound a bit like the nonsense phrases of Dr . Seuss ) . Don't forget to notice that the last line of the story is actually on the back of the book . The first couple times I read it to my kids I didn't see that , and the book seemed to come to a puzzlingly abrupt end .
    • 016 4  this book is great the art is absolutly beautiful , and it provides a nice change from the usual board book topics of things like animals , vehicles , etc . texture is very important in the illustrations which use collage in a totally fun way that is much more creative than most board book art . also makes a fun gift for the adult sushi lover .
    • 017 4  In our home food is a big deal . So when I saw this book series I knew we needed to have it for our tiny foodie-to-be . The pictures are fantastic and I love the verses ! It's smart , hip , and funny ! Big big Futomaki , and Hot Hot Hot ! makes my 4 month old son ( and us ) crack up EVERY time . A big plus is I don't mind reading it over and over because the content is simple , but not dumbed down . I love that . I also love that it is sturdy , and the perfect size for the side pocket in our diaper bag . For an added bonus bring this along to your favorite Sushi restaurant , and sit at the sushi bar . You can point to the real stuff while you read , and baby will gets lots of attention . High five to you coolest parent ever ! Important note : The last verse is on the BACK COVER . I read it for several weeks before I realised this . I was confused about why the book would rhyme until the last page . It didn't make sense . Then one day I was looking at the back and had that Ah ha ! moment . Much happier once we realised that .
    • 018 4  I bought this as a gift for a friend ( it was on her baby registry ) . When I received I had to show it to everyone I knew before I could bring myself to wrap it . It's just a really cute book with beautiful artwork . It's fun to rhyme about food ! I personally think it's a great idea to introduce young children to ethnic foods . I think in the U.S . we have the idea that children won't / can't eat anything other than chicken nuggets and mac & cheese because their palettes aren't developed . Maybe their palettes aren't developed , but there are dishes in any cuisine that children can eat . I mean , what do you think 3 year olds in Japan , or in Ethiopia eat ? Hint : not chicken nuggets . Anyway , I think this is a cute and fun way to introduce kids to the larger world and the different cultures and foods within . My friend says she can't wait to get the whole collection of these books for her kids .
    • 019 4  My one year old grandson enjoys the pictures in this book and the rhythm of the words . It is nice for me to have a book to read to him that isn't about warm fuzzy animals .
    • 021 4  My sister gave me this book and I have been reading it to my 8 - month old since he was tiny . He LOVES it ! The words are very sing-songy and he loves grabbing for the colorful illustrations . I am buying this book for all my sushi loving friends to read to their kids . It's as much fun for parents as it is for the kids .
    • 022 4  If you don't love sushi , you might not care about this book . But boy is it cute ! And baby LOVES it ( 8 months ) . He giggles whenever he sees the ikura page - - I don't know if it's the fun illustrations or the clever words . But whatever , as long as he's happy . One day perhaps he , too , will share our passion for sushi . I'd give this as a gift to any sushi-loving , parent-to-be .
    • 023 4  I was excited to see a book about a topic like sushi available for the young set , and after reading the great reviews , I ordered it and looked forward to its arrival . But . . . I was underwhelmed . The artwork is interesting , but the cadence is very uneven . Three stars for a great , fun topic , but not four or five because it was less clever and less of a fluid read than I expected . Catchy idea more than catchy overall . That said , because it is unique and is fun to look at , and because there were one or two pages that were great fun , Hot , hot , hot , I would purchase it again .
    • 024 4  My girlfriend loves sushi , but her doctor prohibited her from eating it while she was pregnant . I bought this book during her pregnancy as a joke , but it turns out to be one of our daughter's favorites . The bold graphics catch her attention and the rhymes maintain it . My one complaint is that the rhythm of the book is inconsistent : after the first seven pages , the amount of text per page doubles , which means that she wants to turn the page before we are done reading the text .
    • 025 4  This review is from : First Book of Sushi ( World Snacks ) ( Board book ) If you are a foodie and want to share your love of food with you little one these books are perfect . The art is a mix of paper cutouts and found objects and the rhyming story is very cute . You'll be repeating things like Hola Jalapeno to your little one with glee ! I just wish this author would put out more of this series of books .

    • 027 4  When I was pregnant with my daughter this was the first item I purchased for her . We have read it a ton of times . Now , at 31 months old , she has a pretty big library and this is still one she consistently pulls off the shelf for me to read . Whenever we go out for sushi she always says , pink pickled ginger cools my tongue , wasabi HOT , HOT , HOT !
    • 028 4  I found this book in a funky little store in Nashville and bought it as a gift for my niece . The artwork is colorful and fun , the rhymes are great , and the concept is fantastic . My niece's mom ended up buying all of the rest of the books in this series , I like the rest too , but this one is by far my favorite of them all .
    • 029 4  I bought this book thinking it'd be a nice change from all the pastel baby board books full of animals and alphabet . To my delight , my son LOVES this book . The graphics are creative and colorful and the rhyming is fun . He's 18 months and says , big BIG futomaki , as well as uni urchin roe , as we read along . I plan on investing in a few more world snacks books !
    • 030 4  This review is from : First Book of Sushi ( World Snacks ) ( Board book ) I enjoyed this book , too . It has interesting shapes , colors , and a nice rhythm which my 16 month old enjoys . But it is educational and not mindless junk like a lot of other baby books . I don't feel like a moron when I read it aloud to him in a public place . I enjoy all of her books we have so far .

    • 032 4  This review is from : First Book of Sushi ( World Snacks ) ( Board book ) I purchased this book for my three year old neice with a set of wooden sushi toys , Melissa & Doug Wooden Sushi and together , she spent more time with this book and toy than anything else . She memorized this book and recited it to me over and over . . . and over on the phone ( Which means , her Mom and sister must have read it to her many times ) . It was so irresistable to hear her learning and having fun , I was full game to listen . This of course led to her introduction to real sushi which she passed with flying colors and this book gave her the confidence to think she was ordering for herself . I'm so glad I found this book for her .

    • 034 4  One of my family's favorites . Adorable illustrations . Great rhymes . The last two pages needed to be spaced out more for the way my tot turns the pages . He chewed his first copy so we ended up getting another cause we couldn't see our board book library without it .
    • 035 4  When I bought this book for our son , I did so on a whim . It seemed like a cute idea and since my husband and I are sushi lovers I decided that it was worth the try . We were not disappointed when we got it ! It's beautifully illustrated and well written . We've read it to our son so many times before bed that we now have it memorized and can clearly picture the Tobiko flying fishy roe , flying from Japan . It is well worth the money and I highly recommend it !
    • 036 4  What a great way to introduce your child to the foods mom and dad like . With easy to read rhymes and bright colors our 20 month old was hooked and now loves to say sushi when she sees her book .
    • 037 4  This book is one of my favorite to read to my baby girl , not that she gets to eat sushi quite yet , but its entertaining with its bright colors and whimsical rhymes . Meso soup in a sippy cup ? Hmm sounds tasty : D Get it , read it , and enjoy the wonders that is Sushi !
    • 038 4  My son and I love this book . He hasn't had sushi yet , but I love it and want him to eventually try some . Like with Hola Japaleno I love the pronunciation guide in the back and the pictures are very cute .
    • 039 4  My husband loves sushi , so I had to get this for our little girl . It's such a cute board book !
    • 040 4  This book is so cute . My baby loves having it read to her . The story is sing-songy and rhyming - - it's fun to read . It's a clever book in a world of ho-hum children's literature .
    • 041 4  This is a really cute little book . Perfect for any sushi loving parent . For the food lovers , she's done books for lots of different cuisines .
    • 042 4  i was given a stack of these board books at my baby shower . First Book of Sushi , Yum Yum Dim Sum , Urban Babies Wear Black , as well as , the Petit Connoisseur : Art and The Petit Connoisseur : fashion , my kid LOVES them ! ! As stated they are BOARD books so your older kids who can actually read may get bored but for the little ones these are fun rhyming colorful introductions to different foods and such ! And they are virtually indestructible ! Great addition to any new baby room !
    • 043 4  My one year old son loves this board book ! We actually have the entire series . It's fun and creative , and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages . We are hooked !
    • 044 4  Our baby is only 3 months old , but she is very captivated by this book . The designs and patterns really appeal to her . She will study it and has even started to turn the pages herself ! I highly recommend it for babies .
    • 046 4  We own the Dim Sum book by the same author , and the Sushi book is not as great . The pictures are still wonderful , but the words don't flow as easily , and the last line of the book ends on the back cover . That's a little confusing for my 22 - month-old . With the Dim Sum book , there is a strong rhythm and an easy rhyme , which makes my child speak the last word on every page . Not so in the Sushi book .
    • 047 4  Cute book ! Great illustrations and fun rhyming . I bought this for my baby who's 4 months old now and she's half Japanese and half American , so this is a little introduction to the food of half of her culture .
    • 048 4  This book just isn't as good as the others in the series . I like the artwork with the seed beads as roe , etc . but the flow of the poetry just isn't all that . The one I love is Hola Jalepenjo . It's far better than this one .
    • 049 4  This review is from : First Book of Sushi ( World Snacks ) ( Board book ) I bought this because my two and half year old nephew has enjoyed Hola Jalapeno for many months and I thought I'd try something new . He loves to be read to but this one just won't keep his interest . I'll keep trying . Maybe when he's a bit older .

    • 051 4  This review is from : First Book of Sushi ( World Snacks ) ( Board book ) This was a waste of money . I'm not even giving it as a gift . It's awful . Don't waste your money
    • 052 4  This was a waste of money . I'm not even giving it as a gift . It's awful . Don't waste your money

  • 045 4  For pre-school or kindergarten children . . . story is fine . For 1st through 3rd grade , it's a wonderful textbook . . . for concepts , culture and Japanese language . Lend's itself to theme teaching including artwork , kimono dress-up , etc . May not be as much a cookbook for kids as it is a resource for variety of concepts . In some ways , as good as Sesame Street videos .
    • 009 4  A wonderful childs book . Great text , great artwork .
