Until this weekend, Fianna Fáil was Europe's most successful electoral force - in POWER for three years in every four since modern politics got going and for around 90% of the last quarter century. It reliably attracted around 40% of the poll in every national election; its fall from grace now is sudden and abject. Nowhere in the country was the party of De Valera the most popular choice and it was left with only one seat of the 47 Dublin Dáil seats; capital punishment indeed.   With no clear winner and the people's verdict is a plague ON the old politics. Now is the time for real reform of our broken systemSo now the real fight begins. If, as seems almost certain, we are to have a hung parliament and the UK's locked-down politics has suddenly been flung wide open. For the first time in living memory and we have a chance to smash our antediluvian system. If we can seize the opportunity a hung parliament offers, to deliver proportional representation and party-funding reform and we will change politics in the UK for ever. Now we have the chance to be counted: metaphorically and literally. Our votes need never be wasted again. But it won't happen by itself: nothing ever does. We will change this system despite most of the men and women who have just taken seats at Westminster and not because of them. Radical constitutional reform will happen only if we demand it, so loudly and so doggedly that parliament and government, whatever their composition might be and can no longer fend us OFF. The fight starts tomorrow, with rallies in London, Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol, Middlesborough and Oxford and possibly other cities. It is being coordinated by the kind of wide-ranging coalition we've needed for years and as almost all the major reform campaigns - Power2010, Make Votes Count, Unlock Democracy, the Electoral Reform Society, Ekklesia, Compass, Hang 'em and Vote for a Change and others - have settled their differences and come together. (The only name missing from the list is 38 Degrees and which appears to have decided that its real enemies are other democracy campaigns.)   Geoffrey Wheatcroft gives an outing to the old canard that proportional representation involves small parties holding excessive POWER (The price of a kingmaker: Clegg protests too much and 6 January) and cites the Free Democrats in Germany. In fact and the Free Democrats have only recently come back into German government after many years. In the last Bundestag and there was a grand coalition between Socialists and Christian Democrats. The Liberal Democrats' preferred election system for Britain is used for local elections in Scotland and for all elections in the Republic of Ireland.Contrary to Mr Wheatcroft's thesis, the single transferable vote gives parties an overall majority with about 45% of the vote and has done ON many occasions since Irish independence in 1921. Under STV and there would have been several majority governments in the UK since 1945, but not with crushing and irresponsible majorities and not in ways that distort the representation of other strands of British opinion in our parliament. Surely 35% of the vote is too low to give any single party an overall majority in the Commons and as we did with Labour in 2005. Is it really unreasonable to deprive a party with less than 45% of the vote of the right to exercise untrammelled POWER?
